Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun: My thumb is down to Dennis Rodman and his bizarre egotistical nonsensical attempt at diplomacy with his latest visit to North Korea. This isnt the Richard Nixon days, when ping-pong began to unfreeze the relationship between the United States and China. This is today, and this is the clown Rodman, trying to look serious in a political arena. The situation becomes all the more troubling when you consider Rodmans patty-cake friendship with dictator and admirer Kim Jong-un. While in North Korea, Rodman suggested that American tour guide, Kenneth Bae, jailed 15 years for state subversion, was at fault for being held captive and after saying that, blamed his verbal outburst on drinking too much. Dennis Rodman is, was, and remains something of a sporting embarrassment. The fact he is playing a more difficult game here only makes it worse. So why the change of heart? Probably a couple of reasons. First, Marino has reportedly been speaking with the CEO and President of the Dolphins Tom Garfinkel about joining the teams front office. Clearly, filing a lawsuit against the NFL would jeopardize his chances gaining employment with the Dolphins. The Dolphins, along with the rest of the NFL teams, will ultimately be responsible for paying out whatever money is owed to the players as a result of the concussion lawsuits. Having a plaintiff as an employee in that circumstance would be a bit awkward. So given Marinos ambitions to join the Dolphins in an executive position, the timing of the lawsuit was unusual. In this case, the potential fallout was inescapable. The timing of the lawsuit was a surprise for another reason. In August 2013, the NFL announced that it had settled the over 220 concussion lawsuits involving nearly 5,000 former NFL players and their families. To date, it has rejected the settlement twice. Once approved, though, the settlement would bind every single retired NFL player as of the Court approval date. Since Marino retired on March 13, 2000, that would include him. So at this time, there was not a pressing need for Marino to sue the NFL. He was already covered by the potential NFL settlement. If for some reason he ends up being unhappy with the Court approved settlement (if and when that day comes), he could simply opt out of the settlement and file his own lawsuit. Every player will have that right to walk away from the Court approved settlement and file their own lawsuit. DETROIT -- Joe Nathan expects to fit in just fine in Detroit -- and now the Tigers dont have to face the closer who has dominated them more than perhaps any other in baseball. Brian ONeill Jersey . Nathan agreed with Detroit on a two-year contract with a club option for 2016, enabling the Tigers to accomplish one of their main objectives this off-season by adding one of the games most accomplished closers to the bullpen. The three-time defending AL Central champions announced the deal Wednesday, two days after trading right-handed starter Doug Fister to Washington. Terms were not disclosed. "Why would I come here?" Nathan asked rhetorically. "I think the question is, why wouldnt I? This team is ready to win. Theyre ready to win now. ... Its not just about getting to the post-season. For me, its about getting to the big one." Nathan, who turned 39 last month, has never pitched in the World Series. He had 43 saves in 46 chances for the Texas Rangers last season. Its been a busy off-season already for Detroit, which traded slugger Prince Fielder to Texas for Ian Kinsler in a move that, coupled with the trade of Fister, gave the Tigers more financial flexibility. Detroits bullpen was unsettled for much of last season. Joaquin Benoit eventually performed well as the closer, but he is now a free agent. "A very big part of what we were trying to accomplish was to get a closer," general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "This was always a goal of ours." Nathan posted a 1.39 ERA last season, then declined a $9 million option that would have kept him with the Rangers. Nathan wanted at least a two-year agreement, and the Tigers were willing to give it to him. Now that Mariano Rivera has retired, Nathan is baseballs active leader with 341 saves. Hes pitched for San Francisco, Minnesota and Texas -- and hes been particularly dominant when facing the Tigers, converting all 36 of his save chances with a 1.44 ERA. Thats more saves than any other pitcher has against the Tigers. Nathan even helped hand Detroit one of its most crushing losses in franchise history -- he pitched in relief when the Twins beat the Tigers in extra innings of a one-game playoff for the 2009 division title.
