A look at Week One of the NFL season, including Peyton Mannings seven touchdowns, rookies making a mark, veterans showing they still have something left and rising stars off to fine starts, all in 50 Points. Bo Scarbrough Jersey . 1. Broncos QB Peyton Manning (27-for-42, 462 YDS, 7 TD) got off to a spectacular start, abusing the Ravens, particularly in the second half. Baltimores defence wasnt great least season, ranking 17th in passing yardage against per game and per play. While getting CB Lardarius Webb back from injury was supposed to provide a big boost, the Ravens also had signficant defensive losses in the offseason, including FS Ed Reed, and were no match for Manning in Denver Thursday night. 2. 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (27-for-39, 412 YDS, 3 TD) was outstanding in a win over Green Bay, and did it primarily with his arm, rushing for just 22 yards on seven carries. 3. With Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham out of the lineup, the 49ers needed receivers to step up and step up they did. WR Anquan Boldin (13 REC, 208 YDS, 1 TD, 17 targets), who cost the Niners a sixth-round draft pick to acquire him from Baltimore, and TE Vernon Davis (6 REC, 98 YDS, 2 TD, 9 targets) were the top targets for Kaepernick. 4. Patriots WR Danny Amendola (10 REC, 104 YDS) and undrafted rookie WR Kenbrell Thompkins (4 REC, 42 YDS) were both targeted by Tom Brady a game-high 14 times against Buffalo, with decidedly different results. Julian Edelman (7 REC, 79 YDS, 2 TD) had the most productive day among Patriots receivers for fantasy owners. 5. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (111 YDS, 3 TD, 22 touches), but after a 78-yard touchdown on his first carry, Peterson was kept under wraps (aside from two more touchdowns) by the Lions, gaining 33 yards on his next 21 touches. 6. The running back that was busting loose in the Vikings-Lions game was Lions RB Reggie Bush (191 YDS, 1 TD, 25 touches), who was complemented nicely by Joique Bell (92 YDS, 2 TD, 11 touches) as Mikel Leshoure was scratched from the lineup. 7. Targets for Broncos wide receivers: Demaryius Thomas, 11; Wes Welker, 11; Eric Decker, 7. The early concern is that Decker, who scored 13 touchdowns a year ago, will be the one to lose looks now that Welker is in Denver, but its not just Welker. TE Julius Thomas (5 REC, 110 YDS, 2 TD, 7 targets) is another option to get looks from Manning. 8. Jets QB Geno Smith was maligned through the preseason, particularly after throwing three interceptions in a half against the New York Giants, but fared well (24-for-38, 256 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT, 6 RUSH, 47 YDS) in his NFL regular-season debut. While none of the Jets receivers are top notch, Smiths competence could increase the appeal of Santonio Holmes (1 REC, 13 YDS, 3 targets), Jeremy Kerley (3 REC, 45 YDS, 4 targets) and Stephen Hill (6 REC, 39 YDS, 9 targets). 9. Jets TE Kellen Winslow (7 REC, 79 YDS, 1 TD) , who played just one game for the Patriots in 2012, made a good impression in his first game with the Jets. Hes listed second on the Jets depth chart, behind Jeff Cumberland, at tight end, but Winslow had 75 catches for 763 yards while playing for Tampa Bay in 2011. If he is capable of staying healthy enough to do that again, he could be a really valuable addition for the Jets and work his way into fantasy relevance. 10. Touches for Broncos running backs: Knowshon Moreno, 12; Montee Ball, 8; Ronnie Hillman, 6. Like Ball most long-term out of that trio, but until its settled, ugh. 11. Bills rookie QB E.J. Manuel (18-for-27, 150 YDS, 2 TD) kept to a conservative gameplan, much like the preseason, but was reasonably effective. Until the Bills open up, however, its going to be difficult for WR Steve Johnson (3 REC, 39 YDS, 1 TD, 5 targets) to achieve full value as a productive wideout. 12. For all the concerns about his passing accuracy, Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor (19-for-29, 217 YDS, 1 TD, 2 INT) didnt have real problems with that against Indianapolis and his running ability (112 YDS, 13 carries) made the Raiders at least a little bit dangerous on offence. 13. Falcons RB Steven Jackson (122 yards, 16 touches) had an efficient, productive game in his first game with Atlanta, even if he didnt end up finding the end zone. 14. Moving into the starting role vacated by Steven Jackson, Rams RB Daryl Richardson had 96 yards from scrimmage on 25 touches. 15. RB David Wilson (19 YDS, seven carries) lost a pair of fumbles and was benched in favour of DaRel Scott, who finished with 74 yards on 10 touches. Wilson was banished for fumbling early last season but, particularly with Andre Brown out due to a broken leg, the Giants dont have promising alternatives right now. 16. Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey and RB LaRod Stephens-Howling and ILB Larry Foote all suffered season-ending injuries. Pouncey tore his ACL and MCL, and figures to be replaced in the starting lineup by Kelvin Beachum, a seventh-round pick out of SMU in 2012. Stephens-Howling tore his ACL, hardly what the Steelers running game needed (more in the next point). Foote, the 33-year-old veteran, ruptured his bicep and will likely need surgery. Vince Williams, a sixth-round pick out of Florida State, is Footes probable replacement in the starting lineup. 17. Steelers RB Isaac Redman had nine yards and a lost fumble on eight carries, some of which could be attributed to the loss of Pouncey. Its easy to wonder how much worse Jonathan Dwyer -- who the Steelers cut at the end of camp -- would have been, but with Stephens-Howling out, it looks like the Steelers will be re-signing Dwyer. 18. Rams TE Jared Cook has been a popular breakout candidate for the last couple seasons and maybe the opportunity in St. Louis is going to work better than his time in Tennessee. Against Arizona, Cook had seven catches (10 targets) for 141 yards and a pair of touchdowns, fumbling once near the goalline when he was caught from behind by Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu. 19. Ravens TE Dallas Clark (7 REC, 87 YDS, team-leading 12 targets) played a big role for Baltimore, though he had some drops. There are reports that the Ravens are going to give TE Jake Ballard, a late cut from the Patriots, a look as they try to fill the void created by Dennis Pittas preseason injury. 20. For all the talk about how the Bills would feed the ball to RB C.J. Spiller, he had 22 touches (55 YDS) compared to 17 touches for Fred Jackson (108 YDS). The Bills may be more effective with the two-headed running back approach, but if Spiller is going to be an elite fantasy producer, he needs a greater percentage of the touches. 21. Patriots RB Shane Vereen (159 YDS, 21 touches) thrived with Stevan Ridley (46 YDS, 9 carries) getting benched after losing a fumble. Vereen was a nice value play entering the season, as a complement to Ridley, and thats still his role, but Vereen could put up quality yardage even in a secondary role. 22. Falcons WR Roddy White, who was listed as questionable (due to an ankle injury) had two catches (on two targets) for 19 yards against the Saints. Harry Douglas (4 REC, 93 YDS, 6 targets) and Julio Jones (7 REC, 76 YDS, 1 TD, 9 targets) led the Atlanta wideouts. 23. Bengals WR A.J. Green (9 REC, 162 YDS, 2 TD, 13 targets) was, naturally, the preferred target for QB Andy Dalton, while tight ends Tyler Eifert (5 REC, 47 YDS, 5 targets) and Jermaine Gresham (5 REC, 35 YDS, 5 targets) were the next most-productive receivers against the Bears. 24. Giants QB Eli Manning passed for 450 yards with four touchdowns, but contributed three interceptions to the Giants six turnover effort. With Eli throwing for 450 yards, the Giants had three wide receivers -- Victor Cruz (5 REC, 118 YDS, 3 TD, 8 targets), Hakeem Nicks (5 REC, 114 YDS, 8 targets) and Rueben Randle (5 REC, 101 YDS, 6 targets) -- go for more than 100 yards. 25. While top Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (4 REC, 22 YDS, 8 targets) was mostly invisible, WR Miles Austin (10 REC, 72 YDS, 12 targets), TE Jason Witten (8 REC, 70 YDS, 2 TD, 9 targets) led the way in the Dallas passing game. 26. Browns TE Jordan Cameron (9 REC, 108 YDS, 1 TD, 13 targets) was maybe the only bright spot for Browns as QB Brandon Weeden (26-for-53, 289 YDS, 1 TD, 3 INT) didnt inspire confidence. Dolphins CB Dmitri Patterson had two of the three picks against Weeden. 27. Dolphins WR Brian Hartline (9 REC, 114 YDS, 1 TD, 15 targets) had a big day, but there were other issues in the Miami receiving corps. Free agent acquisition Mike Wallace had one catch (five targets) for 15 yards. He wasnt happy about his role, especially when third receiver Brandon Gibson had seven catches (10 targets) for 77 yards. 28. The hope for the Cardinals coming into the season was that QB Carson Palmer would rejuvenate their passing attack. After all, he threw for 4,000 in Oakland last season and the Raiders didnt have Larry Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald (8 REC, 80 YDS, 2 TD, 14 targets) did reap immediate rewards, but so too did WR Andre Roberts (8 REC, 97 YDS, 9 targets) and WR Michael Floyd (4 REC, 82 YDS, 6 targets). 29. Steelers WR Jerricho Cotchery (4 REC, 34 YDS, 1 TD), who scored their only touchdown, was targeted seven times, the same as Antonio Brown (5 REC, 71 YDS), who is the Steelers No. 1 receiver. Emmanuel Sanders (7 REC, 57 YDS) was targeted a dozen times against Tennessee. 30. Touches for Saints running backs: Darren Sproles, 14; Pierre Thomas, 13; Mark Ingram, 9. Same as it ever was. 31. One of my preferred value plays on draft day was to get Jets RB Bilal Powell (64 YDS, 16 touches) as a third or fourth running back. Given that hes getting more touches than Chris Ivory (15 YDS, 10 carries), Powell has some value, but hes still trying to establish that he can be a viable starter for the Jets, let alone for fantasy owners. 32. Bucs WR Vincent Jackson (7 REC, 154 YDS) was targeted on 13 of QB Josh Freemans 31 pass attempts as the Bucs didnt shy away from Jets CB Antonio Cromartie, who is thought to be a strong cover corner, but had few answers for Jackson. 33. The Packers passing game focused on WR Jordy Nelson (7 REC, 130 YDS, 1 TD, 10 targets) and WR Randall Cobb (7 REC, 108 YDS, 1 TD, 12 targets). James Jones, on the other hand, had no catches and was targeted twice. 34. Packers rookie RB Eddie Lacy gained 72 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown on 15 touches, though none of the Packers runs against San Francisco were for more than seven yards. 35. Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray had 125 yards from scrimmage on 28 touches. Philip Tanner was the only other running back to get touches and he had one carry and one pass reception. 36. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (25-for-33, 320 YDS, 1 TD) led Seattle to a road win. As great as Wilson was as a rookie in 2012, his only 300-yard passing game was in the playoff loss to Atlanta (when he threw for 385 yards). 37. With Percy Harvin sidelined, Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin -- not Sidney Rice, not Golden Tate -- led the Seattle passing attack with seven receptions (eight targets) for 91 yards. 38. Panthers QB Cam Newton (16-for-23, 125 YDS) didnt get the ball deep, completing one pass for longer than 15 yards and not connecting once with deep threat WR Brandon LaFell. 39. Taking advantage of Jonathan Stewarts absence Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (100 yards, one fumble lost, 20 touches) had a productive day, though a fourth-quarter fumble inside the Seahawks 10-yard line preserved Seattles five-point win. 40. There was lots of preseason hype for Dolphins RB Lamar Miller (3 YDS, 10 carries) and while his first game was no prize, its not like Daniel Thomas (14 YDS, 1 TD, eight carries) was effective running against the Browns defence either. Wait and see how they do against a different opponent, but Miller will obviously need to do more to solidify his hold on the position. 41. Vikings WR Jerome Simpson (7 REC, 140 YDS, 8 targets) is not yet ready to cede his starting spot to rookie Cordarrelle Patterson (1 REC, 10 YDS, 1 target). 42. With Ryan Broyles out, Nate Burleson was a productive option (6 REC, 78 YDS, 6 targets) at wide receiver for the Lions. 43. Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert (16-for-35, 121 YDS, 2 INT) struggled, which didnt come as a surprise. Chad Henne (3-for-6, 36 YDS) might be a better option, considering Gabberts ineffectiveness and injuries -- he entered the game with a broken thumb and then suffered a gash that required 15 stitches in his hand. Any kind of upgrade would help Jaguars receivers Cecil Shorts and, when he returns from suspension, Justin Blackmon. 44. Ravens WR Marlon Brown (4 REC, 65 YDS, 1 TD, 6 targets) is an undrafted free agent out of Georgia who saw more playing time in the absence of Jacoby Jones, the return ace who was finally getting an opportunity to start at wide receiver before getting hurt. "The entire organization would like to thank Sidney for his leadership over the past three seasons," Seattle general manager John Schneider said. He played in 33 regular-season games with the Seahawks, his best season coming in 2012 when he had 50 receptions and seven touchdowns and played all 16 games. Edwards Stadium. Western Kentucky sits on a 6-5 overall record, and although the Hilltoppers arent going to the Conference USA championship game in their first year as a member of the league, they are bowl eligible. Theyve won three games in a row, including a decisive 45-7 victory over UTSA last weekend. Marshall is one of two unbeaten teams in the nation (Florida State being the other), and already owns a spot in the C-USA championship game with an unblemished league mark. The Herd almost let it all slip away with a narrow 23-18 victory over UAB last weekend. Marshall leads the all-time series with Western Kentucky, 4-1. The last time these new conference rivals met, however, was back in 1996, when the Thundering Herd won, 37-3. Marshall owns a 3-0 advantage in Huntington. Western Kentucky has built a solid foundation this season around its offense, led by quarterback Brandon Doughty. The Hilltoppers enter this game against Marshall averaging 41.9 ppg, which means this could be the most offense Marshall faces all season long. In 11 games, Doughty has thrown for 3,853 yards (ranked second in the FBS - 20 yards behind the injured Connor Halliday of Washington State) with 36 touchdown passes, which is the most in the FBS nation. Last season for the Hilltoppers, the run game was essential. This year its more of a complementary aspect with Leon Allen, who has rushed 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns. Allen averages a respectable 113.9 rushing ypg, and has carried the ball 226 times this season. Doughty has done an excellent job spreading the ball around to various receivers. Jared Dangerfield leads the team with 56 receptions and 621 yards, adding in a team-high eight touchdown grabs. Willie McNeal (seven touchdowns), Taywan Taylor (six touchdowns) and Antwane Grant (five touchdowns) are all receiving threats for WKU. Offense has been plentiful for the Hilltoppers, but the downfall for the team has been on the defensive side. Western Kentucky allows 36.8 ppg and 483.1 offensive ypg to opponents this season through 11 contests, which has allowed teams like UAB (42 points), Florida Atlantic (45 points) and Louisiana Tech (59 points) to pick up crucial wins against the Hilltoppers. WKU has been especially bad against the run, allowing 224.1 rushing ypg to opponents. Nick Holt has been a threat defensively, racking up 93 tackles with seven tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries. Dejon Brown is the next closest Hilltopper to Holt with 65 tackles on the year, and GeMonee Brown has a team-best eight tackles for loss. The Hilltoppers will need to force some Marshall turnovers in order to stay competitive in this one. Marshalls 23-point outing against UAB was by far the lowest total for the Herd this season, but a win is a win in coach Doc Hollidays eyes. He leads the team with 157.3 rushing ypg, and has helped the Herd score 44.9 ppg this season. Cato has a reliable set of weapons through the air, led by veteran pass catcher Tommy Shuler. Shuler has caught a team-best 57 passes this season for 737 yards and seven touchdowns, while talented freshman Angelo Jean-Louis has racked up 456 yards with five touchdowns in 11 games played. Tight End Eric Frohnapfel is second on the team with 30 receptions, adding 375 yards and a trio of scores to his resume. While Marshalls offense is crushing foes, the teams defense has been doing the same. The Herd are allowing just 16.5 ppg to opponents, including just 324.4 offensive ypg. Only twice this season has a challenger managed to accumulate more than 20 points against the Herd defense, with UABs 18 points being the third-highest total for an opponent this year. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- An MRI test on Friday confirmed that Bengals defensive tackle Geno Atkins tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, leaving the AFC North leaders without another star player on defence. NASHVILLE -- Its game balls all around for the Jacksonville Jaguars, winless no more. They can thank the Tennessee Titans for helping them finally get that first victory this season. Owner Shad Khan gave first-year coach Gus Bradley a game ball, and the coach made sure both his boss and general manager David Caldwell each got one, too, after the Jaguars held off the Titans 29-27 Sunday. All the Jaguars will be receiving a game ball to remember this very big win. "What Im excited about is that we improved in many areas," Bradley said. "On my call sheet I was writing down things that were really good that were happening during the game. They just kept piling up. I thought, this is how it feels." Maurice Jones-Drew and Jordan Todman each ran for a touchdown as the Jaguars left Tampa Bay at 0-8 as the only winless team left. The Buccaneers host Miami on Monday night. The Jaguars (1- scored the most points in a game this season. They never trailed and forced four turnovers they turned into 17 points. "Its definitely a great feeling," Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne. "Hopefully we can build on this. We cant become complacent and say we got our first win ... weve still got to improve on what weve done today and get better individually." The Jaguars could have had a bigger lead if not for a shotgun snap bouncing off receiver Ace Sanders as he ran in motion. Not even Munchak seemed ready. The Titans coach wanted to challenge a 22-yard sideline catch by Cecil Shorts III, but threw the flag as the Jaguars snapped the ball. Munchak said later he was waiting for a better replay before deciding to challenge. Locker hurt his right foot in the second quarter at the end of an option keeper. One quarter of the way through the NHL season, its time for an early look at the awards races, along with some advanced stats leaders and trailers. There are some early surprises in the race for the Hart Trophy, but two of the contenders are the leagues biggest stars over the past decade. There are many more players in contention for the awards than just the three that Ive named, and a good or bad week can easily alter the landscape, but through the first 20 or so games of the NHL season, this is how the awards races look to me. HART TROPHY Winner: Alexander Steen, LW, St. LouisRunners-up: Alex Ovechkin, RW, Washington; Sidney Crosby, C, PittsburghComment: A career low-percentage finisher (9.8% career shooting percentage), Alexander Steen has been a strong two-way player for much of his time in St. Louis, generating more than three shots per game and playing tough minutes for the last three-plus seasons but, suddenly, this year, he has started scoring at an outrageous rate (17 G, 9 A in 20 GP), thanks both to a career-high 23.3% shooting percentage and career-high 3.65 shots on goal per game. While the shots per game could be sustainable, as his line with David Backes and, often, T.J. Oshie, is one of the leagues best, but when Steens shooting percentage starts to fall, hes unlikely to hold off challengers. Ovechkin recaptured some of his lost lustre last season when he led the league with 32 goals in 48 games (a 55-goal pace in an 82-game season), but hes on fire this season, with 17 goals and 24 points in 19 games. While Ovechin is scoring on a career-high 15.5% of his shots, thats not nearly so far from his career average (12.3%) and his 5.79 shots on goal per game represent the second-best rate of his career. When Ovechkin is generating that many chances, the goals, and points, will follow. Early in the year, this looked like it would be a runaway for Crosby, who is finally healthy and appeared to be at the peak of his powers. A funny thing happened on the way to that coronation, however, as Crosby has endured a bit of a slump. Now, its only a superstar slump, which means nine points in the last 13 games, so its not like hes completely dropped off the map, but when he had 17 points in the first eight games and gave every indication that he would run away with the Hart and Art Ross trophies. NORRIS TROPHYWinner: Erik Karlsson, OttawaRunners-up: P.K. Subban, Montreal; Alex Pietrangelo, St. LouisComment: It has been a trying season for the Ottawa Senators, but Karlsson has been great, scoring a point per game and logging more than 27 minutes of ice time. Not surprisingly, Karlssons top challenger is last years winner, Subban, who has 19 points in 22 games and, despite a manufactured controversy surrounding his ice time, has played a career-high 24:54 per game. This race is a long way from settled, but its kind of cool to have the last two winners off to strong starts again this season. Theres still plenty of time for other defencemen to climb into the conversation. Alex Pietrangelo is playing as well as he ever had, with more offensive production in the early going. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Duncan Keith are a couple more early contenders to consider. VEZINA TROPHYWinner: Tuukka Rask, BostonRunners-up: Josh Harding, Minnesota; Carey Price, MontrealComment: If not for Tuesdays loss in Montreal, the award would go to Harding, but he surrendered three goals in a little more than 33 minutes, opening the door just a crack for Tuukka Rask to take the lead. With a .946 save percentage in 18 games, Rask is not only handling a heavy workload, but hes playing better than ever before, and thats saying something because from 2009-2010 through 2012-2013, he had the best save percentage among goaltenders with at least 100 games played. Thats not to suggest that Hardings year hasnt been incredible -- hes allowed 23 goals against in 18 games (1.38 GAA) -- but hes just a hair behind Rask today. As for other contenders, Price gets the nod over Kari Lehtonen, who missed time with injury, and Torontos duo of Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer, largely because Price has handled the starters workload. CALDER TROPHYWinner: Tomas Hertl, LW, San JoseRunners-up: Seth Jones, D, Nashville; Torey Krug, D, BostonComment: Hertl, the 20-year-old Czech winger burst onto the scene with six goals in his first three games, then went through a bout of mediocrity, scoring four points in the next 11 games, but hes picked up again and with 12 goals and 18 points in 21 games, hes having a lot of success on Joe Thorntons wing. Hes on a 47-goal pace and, sure its not likely to continue, but thats where we are through the first quarter of the season. Jones has been handling a heavy workload, 24 minutes per game, and is facing tough matchups as he frequently pairs with Shea Weber on the Predators top pair. He may not score enough to hold voter interest (see Jonas Brodin last season), but Jones appears to be on the fast track to stardom. A defenceman who may score enough, Krug, is quarterbacking the Bruins power play and has scored half of his 12 points with the man advantage, but he holds his own at even strength to rank ahead of Calgarys Sean Monahan and Detroits Danny DeKeyser. Some rookies that didnt start the year in the NHL, including the Rangers Chris Kreider and the Kings Tyler Toffoli, are close for consideration already, despite playing fewer games. SELKE AWARDWinner: Patrice Bergeron, C, BostonRunners-up: David Backes, C, St. Louis; Dave Bolland, C, TorontoComment: Some things dont change and both Bergeron and Backes have continued in their roles, taking on the toughest matchups for their respective teams, while still controlling puck possession. Keeping the puck away from other teams best players is a great way to defend, by the way, and the continued excellence of Bergeron and Backes in their roles makes for a great competition. If not for suffering his ankle tendon injury, Torontos Dave Bolland would be a challenger because, in addition to tough matchups, Bolland has started a lot of shifts in the defensive zone (a product of the Maple Leafs territorial play). Some others of note early in this season: Vancouvers Chris Higgins, Ottawas Kyle Turris and Columbus Brandon Dubinsky. JACK ADAMS AWARDWinner: Patrick Roy, ColoradoRunners-up: Dave Tippett, Phoenix; Mike Yeo, MinnesotaComment: Always a difficult call because there are many great candidates and we dont know how much of a teams performace is necessarily coaching-related, but Roys start with the Avalanche is too strong to ignore. Fortunately, hes a Hall of Famer goaltender, so no one will be ignoring anything that happens with the Avalanche. Tippett is in contention every year and even if the Coyotes arent the buckled-down defensive team that hes favoured in past seasons, theyve also lost just four games in regulation through the first 21. The reason for including Yeo is a nod towards the Wilds change in style of play towards a stronger puck-possession game, going from below average last season to among the league leaders in Fenwick Close, a metric for possession when the game is most closely contested (ie. within one goal in the first two periods and tied in the third period and overtime). For a team to make such a shift has to come, in some manner, from the coaching staff and how they want their team to approach the game. Jon Cooper and Barry Trotz are deserving candidates as well.
