GOODYEAR, Ariz. Curtis McKenzie Jersey . -- Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman is undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone above his left eye but has no other serious injuries after being hit in the face by a line drive in a spring training game. Team doctor Timothy Kremchek said Chapman could be playing again in six to eight weeks. The left-hander with a fastball that has reached 105 mph hopefully will start exercising and throwing in a couple of weeks, Kremchek said. The doctor called Chapman "a very lucky guy." Kremchek said a metal plate will be inserted in the bone above his left eyebrow, with perhaps a bone graft as well, and will remain there permanently. Chapman has a very mild concussion but no other brain injury and no injury to his eye, Kremchek said. "Hes feeling better and he has some pain management. Were optimistic that he is going to be on the mend," Reds manager Bryan Price said after meeting with players Thursday morning at the teams spring training facility. "Obviously, well stay in touch. We will make sure we follow the process as we continue to get familiar with the injury itself. We will let him know how much support he has and that we care about him. Hopefully, we will see him here very soon." Catcher Brayan Pena, a fellow Cuban and Chapmans close friend, was one of several Reds players who visited the injured pitcher Wednesday night and spoke to him on the phone Thursday morning. "He was talking to me and we joked a lot," Pena said. "He just wanted to make sure for me to tell everybody that he appreciate so much the fans prayers, especially our teammates, our coaching staff, everybody around, how much support and how much love he received and got from all of us." Pena said Chapman was very happy when they spoke Thursday, "talking and joking. He was talking a lot about some Cuban jokes and thats good because that means his memory is still working pretty good." The frightening incident, widely available on video via the Internet, occurred in the sixth inning of Wednesday night game at Kansas Citys spring training facility in Surprise, Ariz., when the Royals Salvador Perez lined Chapmans 99 mph fastball into the pitchers face. Chapman was knocked backward to the ground, then rolled on his face, kicking in pain. Pena rushed to the mound. "Honestly when I saw it I wanted to cry," Pena said. "That was my first feeling because it was very scary. It was very scary because I saw the line drive going straight for his face, and then I saw him bleeding and kicking and moving around the way he was." Pena said Chapman "wasnt even talking. He was just like moaning and making sounds and then when I got there I panicked because I didnt know what else to do. Then the medical staff guys got there, and those guys were great." Chapman was taken off the field in a stretcher as the crowd fell into an eerie silence and the game was called off. The pitcher was taken to a nearby hospital, then transferred to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. Kremchek said he expected Chapman to remain hospitalized for a couple of days, perhaps being released on Saturday. The ball hit Chapman in one of the most protected areas of the skull, the doctor said. "If you get hit in the side of the head, that could be disastrous," Kremchek said. "Where Aroldis got hit, you dont want to say he got hit in a good spot because hes undergoing surgery, but it could have been a lot worse, a lot more injuries, a lot more permanent. Hes very lucky." The 26-year-old Chapman has a fastball that regularly tops 100 mph. The two-time All-Star defected from Cuba in 2009 and made the Reds club in his first season of 2010. He had 38 saves each of the past two seasons, with 122 strikeouts in 71 2-3 innings in 2012 and 112 strikeouts in 63 2-3- innings in 2013. Price, a former pitcher, said pitchers are in a dangerous situation, "regardless of how hard you throw." "Its hard to defend yourself from 53, 54 feet," the manager said. "And everyone finishes their pitches differently. Everyone is not in a perfect fielding position and even if you are there is no guarantee that you can protect yourself when a balls hit that hard." Major League Baseball approved a protective cap for pitchers this winter following several terrifying scenes similar to this one in the last few years. The hats were available for testing during spring training on a voluntary basis but most have rejected them. Besides, the hats would offer no protection to the face, where Chapman was hit. Chapman particularly wanted to thank the Royals organization for its support and offer assurance to Perez that it is just something that happens in baseball and was not his fault. Pena said he also felt some responsibility. "I kind of blame myself a little bit because I could have called slider or I should have called changeup," Pena said. "Thats your thought process. Everything goes through your mind and youre looking for answers. ... You kind of put yourself in that guilt feeling." But Chapman, Pena said, told him "You know, its not your fault. I should have thrown slower. Im the one feeling very bad about it and hes the one thats cheering me up. Hes the one in the hospital." Tyler Pitlick Jersey . Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork. Keith Yandle Jersey .com) - Derek Roy recorded the lone goal of the shootout and Nashville outlasted Boston, 3-2, at Bridgestone Arena. Mike Fisher and Mike Ribeiro tallied in regulation while Pekka Rinne stopped 33 shots for the Predators, who have won four of their last six. Milan Lucic and Reilly Smith scored once each for the Bruins, who have lost six of their last seven but recorded a point in back-to-back defeats beyond regulation. Tuukka Rask came up with 38 saves in the games first 65 minutes, but was powerless to prevent Roys dekes from pulling him out of position before a backhander provided the hosts winning margin. Ribeiro put the hosts ahead after just 91 seconds elapsed in the third period when he popped a shot over Rasks shoulder, but Smiths individual rush up the right wing tied the game at 2-2 before 3 1/2 minutes were played. A frenzied overtime period ensued where both teams threw caution to the wind and traded scoring chances. Rask had to make seven saves and Rinne five. Lucic opened the scoring just after the four-minute mark of the second period by flipping his own rebound home from the left side. Fisher equalized for the hosts with 30 seconds left in the second on a power- play strike. He was screening Rask when a floater from the right point by Shea Weber caromed off his body and into the net. Game Notes Nashville improved to 4-1 in shootouts, while Boston fell to 2-2 ... Watch the action unfold live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV, tonight at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt. Perhaps no team had a more difficult start to the season than the Steelers. Accustomed to kicking off a new campaign in style, especially at home in Heinz Field, Pittsburgh lost far more than a game in Week 1 when Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey, linebacker Larry Foote and running back LaRod Stephens- Howling all went down with season-ending injuries during an ugly 16-9 setback against Tennessee. Things dont figure to get much easier this week for the Steelers when they run into their old friend James Harrison and a strong Bengals front seven. The Titans scored 16 straight points in Week 1 after return man Darius Reynauds mental mistake on the opening kickoff resulted in a safety and a 2-0 edge for the Steelers just seconds into the contest. Pittsburgh never capitalized on the early momentum, however. Ben Roethlisberger completed 21-of-33 passes for 191 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Steelers, who came in with 10 straight victories in home openers, the longest active streak in the NFL. Pittsburgh, which was held to 32 yards rushing, lost Pouncey and Stephens- Howling to torn ACLs while Foote ruptured his biceps. "Weve got a lot of work to do," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "Nobody cares about our problems. Theyre glad weve got them. We need to understand that. We need to stick together and persevere." The Bengals, meanwhile, suffered a tough loss of their own but at least came out of it relatively unscathed, because their main AFC North rivals -- the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens -- also suffered setbacks in Week 1. In fact the AFC North as a whole went 0-4 on Kickoff Weekend, a stark contrast for a group which produced five playoff teams over the prior two seasons. Baltimore was unimpressive again Sunday but beat the Cleveland Browns, making the division a bowling shoe-ugly 1-5 early on. Chicagos Jay Cutler hooked up with Brandon Marshall for a go-ahead 19-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter in Week a, as the Bears began the Marc Trestman era with a 24-21 victory over Cincinnati at Soldier Field. The Bengals squandered an 11-point third-quarter lead, turned the ball over three times and committed eight penalties -- with linebacker Rey Maualugas personal foul the most costly as it allowed the Bears to run out the clock. "We didnt deserve to win because we had too many penalties and mistakes," Cincinnati nose tackle Domata Peko said. "But I also think we got a feel for what kind of team we have here, or at least what kind of team we can be. Really, we dominated them for three quarters, in my opinion. Weve just got to finish." Cincinnati signal caller Andy Dalton completed 26-of-33 passes for 282 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while A.J. Green grabbed a game-high nine passes for 162 yards and both of Daltons touchdowns. "They didnt stop us one time," Green said. "They didnt really stop us on offense. We were doing whatever we wanted. The biggest thing we had was turnovers." BenJarvus Green-Ellis added a rushing score for the Bengals, who entered the postseason as a wild card club last season. The Steeelers will be looking to avoid their first 0-2 start since 2002 and have certainly fared well in Cincinnati over the years. Jarret Stoll Jersey. Pittsburgh has won 11 of its last 12 at Paul Brown Stadium, including last seasons 24-17 victory there on Oct. 21 behind Jonathan Dwyers 122 rushing yards. The Steelers also lead the all-time series by a substantial 52-33 margin. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Harrison, the five-time Pro Bowl linebacker and 2008 Defensive Player of the Year with the Steelers, was released in March when he and Pittsburgh couldnt agree on a restructured deal. He brings a physical presence to an already highly-regarded Bengals front seven. "We all know how James plays," Tomlin said. "He brings physicality to the table, hes a guy who brings great passion and he can inspire his teammates." The group, which features All-Pro defensive tackle Geno Atkins, a player who just inked a big money extension before the season started, may have gone into Chicago a little too haughty because the Bears offensive line lacks any kind of reputation. That kind of thing isnt going to happen again against a division foe like the Steelers, though, especially with Harrison playing his old mates for the first time. "I dont have a chip on my shoulder against the Steelers," Harrison said. "I dont hate the Steelers. Am I disappointed? Yeah, Im disappointed." Pittsburgh brought in some help last week, signing former Titans center Fernando Velasco to replace Pouncey and bringing back Dwyer to take over for Stephens-Howling. In addition, veteran kicker Shayne Graham, a former Bengal, was signed after Shaun Suisham injured his hamstring against Tennessee. Velasco is certainly not in Pounceys league but he should be a significant upgrade over stop-gap Kelvin Beachum eventually, although it will be tough for the University of Georgia product to get up to speed in just one week. When the Steelers succeed against Cincinnati its generally due to the running game. Pittsburgh has run for at least 100 yards in all 29 of its wins over the Bengals over the last 20 years. That could be tough formula this week with the injury problems in the backfield and on an already shaky offensive line. Isaac Redman remains the starter at running back for now but his ineffectiveness in Week 1 could give Dwyer some early looks. Rookie LeVeon Bell, meanwhile, remains out for at least another month or so with a foot injury. "I think a consistent running game is really important, not only to be good offensively, but to strike a balance," Tomlin said. "We havent been able to do that to this point." For the Bengals, Green is one of the games elite playmakers and will be a tough test for Steelers cornerbacks Ike Taylor and William Gay, particularly Taylor, who will likely be given the task to shadow Green no matter where he lines up. Green is playing at a high level early in the season and had 17 catches for 203 yards in his two meetings with Pittsburgh last season, including 10 catches in Cincinnatis 13-10 win in the Steel City in December, a game which eliminated the Steelers from the playoff hunt. That contest, coincidentally, was also when star Steelers tight end Heath Miller tore his ACL. Miller, Roethlisbergers favorite target, has returned to practice and there was some hope he could make his season debut in this one but hes been officially ruled out. BRADENTON, Fla. Ryan OReilly Jersey . -- The Toronto Blue Jays spring training game at the Pittsburgh Pirates was rained out Thursday. The game will not be made up. STARTING TIME The Blue Jays returned to their camp in Dunedin without announcing revised pitching plans. Left-hander Mark Buerhle was scheduled to start Thursday on six days rest and it is not likely manager John Gibbons will want him to wait past Friday for his next outing. Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole, slated to start against Toronto, will pitch against Minnesota in a "B" game Friday morning. Cole allowed two runs in two innings against the Blue Jays in his initial outing on Feb. 28. TRAINERS ROOM Pirates left-hander Jeff Locke does not expect to miss much time due to tightness in his right oblique. Locke felt what he said felt like "a continuous little pull" during his last bullpen session and was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday. "Its very minor. Well take a few days and re-evaluate," Locke said. "Its funny. I was just out there throwing normally. It could be I was coming out of my turn quick. It could be I didnt stretch enough." Locke was an All-Star last year but didnt pitch due to a back injury. He struggled in the second half -- at one point he was sent to Double-A -- and finished 10-7 with a 3.52 ERA. He is battling Edinson Volquez for the No. 5 spot in the rotation. "From what Ive heard from the training staff, its something that if we dont take care of it now, it could be six to eight weeks later," Locke said. "Thats something I cant afford." FINDING RHYTHM Pedro Alvarez has started five of Pittsburghs first eight games and is tied with Gregory Polanco for the team lead with 15-bats. "Theres a reason for it," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Were trying to bundle at-bats differently for all these guys and give them an opportunity to find some rhythm. The only guys who havent played back-to-back games are (Andrew) McCutchen and (Russell) Martin, and thats by design too." In spring traininng last year, Alvarez hit .241 with two homers in 54 at-bats. In 2012, he hit .170 with two homers in 53 at-bats. "Pedros spring trainings have been challenging," Hurdle said. "Obviously, the season can turn out different, but nobody likes to have to battle for an extended period. If we can give him some help along the way, like by giving him (lots) of at-bats in a short period of time, thats what well do." Jordan Nolan Jersey . Huntelaar also had a penalty saved by Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio. The two goals brought Huntelaars total for the season to 18, level with Bayern Munichs Mario Gomez for most in the league. Robin Lehner Jersey . Jeff Carter had two goals and an assist as the Kings stretched their streak to seven wins in a row with a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. http://www.officialsabreshockeyauthentic.com/justin-bailey-jersey/ . Louis second-period goal increased the New York Rangers lead but Dustin Brown has countered for the Los Angeles Kings who now trail the New York Rangers 2-1 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final at Madison Square Garden.SAN ANTONIO -- The air conditioning is on again inside the San Antonio Spurs arena. Spurs Sports and Entertainment announced Friday that the outage that affected Game 1 of the NBA Finals between San Antonio and Miami has been repaired. Officials say the system at AT&T Center has been tested and is "fully operational." Temperatures rose into the mid-80s inside the arena during Game 1, which the Spurs won 110-95. Jake McCabe Jersey. Heat star LeBron James left the game with 3:59 left after cramping in the heat, and both teams said conditions were difficult to play. Game 2 is Sunday night. A concert is to be held in the arena Friday, and a WNBA game on Saturday. According to the release, police officers responded to an incident at the East Lansing Marriott at University Place around 1 a.m. Thursday.Jeffrey and his lawyers have determined that it is in Jeffreys best interest to focus on resolving this matter as expeditiously as possible before returning to the team, NBA Players Association executive director Michele Roberts said. We accept and support that decision. However, our expectation is that no disciplinary action should or would be taken by the team or the league going forward, prior to objective deliberation and full consideration of the facts in this matter. The Hornets open the preseason on Oct. 8 in Philadelphia, the same day Taylor has a pre-trial court date at East Lansing District Court.Ingham County prosecutor Stuart Dunnings announced the date Friday.A jury selection for the case is set for Oct. 14, Dunnings said, adding that Taylor also has the option for a bench trial, rather than a jury trial.Taylor, who is not married, is from Norrkoping, Sweden, and lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is unclear why he was in Michigan. The prosecutor said the police report will not be released while the incident is under investigation. The Hornets cancelled a media luncheon with coach Steve Clifford scheduled for Friday so team officials could focus on dealing with the Taylor issue.Taylor is the latest professional athlete in Charlotte charged in a domestic abuse case.Greg Hardy, a defensive end for the Carolina Panthers, was convicted July 15 of assault on a female and communicating threats after the woman said he threw her down on a bed of guns and tossed her into the shower.Hardy is appealing the ruling and a jury trial is set for Nov. 17.The Panthers removed Hardy from their active roster last week, ending three weeks of indecision regarding his playing status. He played Week 1 and sat out the next game before being placed on the exempt-commissioners permission last week after the NFL came under public fire for its penalties in domestic violence cases. The Hornets have their media day with player availability on Monday and will open training camp Tuesday in Asheville, North Carolina.A second-round pick in 2012 out of Vanderbilt, Taylor missed most of last year with a ruptured Achilles tendon but is healthy now.The 6-foot-7, 225-pound Taylor has been competing for the past two seasons with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for a starting spot at small forward. He played in 26 games with eight starts last season before suffering his injury in late December. As a rookie in 2012, he played in 77 games with 29 starts. He has averaged 6.6 points and 2.0 rebounds for his career.Taylor is the second Hornets player involved in off-season incidents.Rookie guard P.J. LOUIS -- Another banner season for New Mexico has been tarnished by an early NCAA exit. The Lobos got a big game from Cameron Bairstow but never quite dug out of an early 16-point deficit, losing 58-53 to Stanford in the second round on Friday. "Not a lot of fun," first-year coach Craig Neal said. "Weve been here before." Chasson Randle scored 23 points and No. 10 seed Stanford made an impression in its first NCAA appearance since 2008, leading almost start to finish against the seventh-seeded Lobos. The Cardinal (22-12) held on after New Mexico rallied to tie it midway through the second half. They got four crucial free throws from reserve Robbie Lemons and Randle in the final half-minute after New Mexico had cut the deficit to two points. Stanford plays the Eastern Kentucky-Kansas winner on Sunday in the third round of the South Regional. New Mexico is headed home without taking care of "unfinished business," the schools unofficial theme this season. "Yeah, I think it was something more for the fans, that tag," Bairstow said. "I think we as a team had of course expectations of post-season success, especially after last year. "Unfortunately, we couldnt get it done." Bairstow had 24 points and eight rebounds but the Lobos (27-7) got off-days from their other top threats. Kendall Williams and Alex Kirk, who together average 30 points, combined for just six. New Mexico has been one and done the last two seasons, losing as the No. 3 seed to Harvard last year under coach Steve Alford. This season they became the first school in Mountain West Conferrence history to win the regular season and conference tournament in consecutive seasons. Brice Johnson Jersey. "Weve done about everything you can do," Neal said. "Its just getting better in the tournament. I just wanted to get these guys back and have another chance, it just didnt work out for us this time." Except for winning Friday, Neal said he wouldnt have changed a thing. "Just really proud about what they did and really happy for their careers," Neal said. "I just wish it would have ended a little better way." Long-range shooting was a key, with Stanford going 8 for 15 -- including 3 for 3 by Anthony Brown -- and New Mexico going just 4 for 21. "They made a lot of shots, they made a lot of plays," Williams said. "And then you look at your stat line and you go 1 for 9. "We just didnt make enough plays." Stanford got away with an off-day from Dwight Powell, who missed all eight shots, fouled out and scored three points. Powell averages 14.2 points, second on the team. Brown added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinal and Stefan Nastic had 10 points and five rebounds. Stanford hit eight of its first 10 shots and scored 17 straight points, including six from Randle, for a 20-4 lead with 13:23 to go in the first half. New Mexico went 6:26 between points and more than 7 minutes between baskets before gaining its footing. The Lobos kept feeding it to Bairstow and ended the half on an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to 32-27. They tied it at 45 near the mid-point of the second half before going scoreless for nearly 7 minutes. A Jamaican athlete is reportedly among those who have failed a doping test after samples were re-examined from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Ronald Darby Jersey . The athlete has returned an adverse analytical finding for the A-sample and the result of the B-sample test is expected from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in Lausanne within days, sources have told the Reuters news agency. Jamaica Olympic Association president Michael Fennell has declined to comment, while Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association president Dr Warren Blake said his organisation had not been notified of any rule violation.Jamaica won six gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the 2008 Olympics, all in athletics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has ordered retesting of 2008 and 2012 Olympic samples where traces of drugs that were undetectable at the time now show up under advanced techniques. The IOC said last month that 31 athletes from six different sports and 12 countries had tested positive in the retesting of 2008 samples and that it had launched disciplinary action against the athletes concerned in order to prevent them from competing in this years Olympics in Rio.Russia has already said 14 of its athletes were among the positive tests from 2008.Meanwhile, a Turkish boxer has been provisionally suspended after his doping sample from the 2012 London Olympics came back positive in retesting - one of 23 positive retests from London. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) revealed Adem Kilicci had tested positive for steroids. The fighter and the Turkish boxing federation have been notified of the findings and his suspension.Kilici, who had qualified to box in the Games in Rio this year, lost in the quarter-finals of the middleweight division in London to gold medal winner Ryota Murata of Japan. The AIBA says it is working with the WADA to ensure that boxing is doping free.Russian track cyclist Yekaterina Gnidenko has also been suspended by the International Cycling Union after failing a doping test on a sample taken shortly before London 2012, although it has not been confirmed that this is due to the retesting program.Gnidenko, who tested positive for steroids, competed in the womens sprint and keirin at the 2012 Olympics without winning a medal, but she now faces being stripped of her silver medal from the European Championships later that year. A strong fastball. A big, bending curveball that can buckle hitters at the knees. Against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, Elias put the entire package together against one of the leagues strongest lineups.PHOENIX -- Theyre former Yankees, clubhouse neighbours and, potentially, new platoon partners with the Milwaukee Brewers. That gaping hole at first base might be filled in 2014 by lefty Lyle Overbay and righty Mark Reynolds. Each player signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, meaning theyll have to prove themselves -- again -- to stick around. "Its really an uncomfortable feeling," said manager Ron Roenicke, drawing on his own experiences in the majors. "I like that theres competition but I tell you what its a nervous time. I dont have fond memories of spring training." This spring, its Overbay and Reynolds who will be trying to impress Roenicke. Reynolds, 30, has a feast-or-famine reputation with 202 homers in his seven seasons in the majors with a career .233 average. He has struck out at least 154 times in each season since 2008, including 223 strikeouts in 2009. But Roenicke sees some hope in the stats. Last year between the Indians and Yankees, Reynolds had 154 strikeouts with 51 walks, about a 3-to-1 ratio. "He sees pitches. He waits for the pitch he wants to hit," Roenicke said. "Hes not up there hacking at everything, and I think thats the difference." Its a little tough on Reynolds having to win a job going into his eight season in the majors. He is back in the National League though, where he came up with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007. "Honestly, I was just looking for the best place to get at bats. Come in and have a good spring and kind of prove myself all over again," Reynolds said. Reynolds isnt usually that far from Overbay. Theyve got lockers right next to each other in the clubhouse. On Wednesday, there they were sitting next to each other taking a brief break during a sunny afternoon in the dugout during batting practice. And there waas Overbay yelling out to Reynolds across the usual morning clubhouse din to pass on a reminder that it was time for a meeting. Patrick Robinson Jersey. Overbay, 37, is back in Milwaukee for the first time since the 2005 season. It was after that season that Overbay was traded to Toronto in a deal that opened up first base for Prince Fielder. Since then, there have been stops in Pittsburgh and Arizona before spending 2013 with the Yankees. Overbay hit .240, though he did have a renaissance of sorts with 14 homers and 59 RBIs, both highs for him since 2010. It was with the Yankees, with the aid of hitting coach Kevin Long, that Overbay said he got the lower half of his body on track with his swing for the first two-thirds of the season. Overbay said he got untracked again the last two months, so he wanted to focus this off-season on regaining what he lost. "Sometimes when results arent happening, you resort back to your other path," Overbay said Wednesday. "So those are the kinds of things I wanted to get in muscle memory, so that when I came here and I could it through this whole year." He might potentially be the best defensive first baseman on the Brewers roster. Overbay is also a solid clubhouse presence who appears comfortable with what he needs to do in the latter part of his career. No guarantees yet with the Brewers. Besides Reynolds, returning veteran Juan Francisco, along with younger or less heralded players like Hunter Morris and Sean Halton are also in the mix at first. But without taking a swing in a game, Overbay has made an impression Roenicke. "I like what he has to say out there. I like what some of the younger guys have already come to me and said about him, that doesnt happen that often," Roenicke said. "So hes a guy that were really happy to have in camp." SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Marie Levasseur scored twice as Canada edged Ghana 2-1 on Saturday to advance to the quarter-finals at the FIFA U-17 Womens World Cup. Thomas Davis Jersey . Its the third time a Canadian team has reached the quarter-finals, with their last appearance coming at the 2012 installment of the tournament in Azerbaijan. Canada, who secured the win despite playing 40 minutes shorthanded after Bianca St. Georges was sent off five minutes into the second half, will play Venezuela in the quarter-finals Mar. 27. "It was a stressful bench but a very proud bench," said Canadian head coach Bev Priestman. "To play 40 and probably 45 minutes with the added time with ten players, youve got to be proud of them." Canada needed a win to advance after North Korea edged Germany 4-3 in Group Bs earlier game. Levasseur put Canada ahead 2-0 in the first half but Ghanas Sandra Owusu cut Canadas lead to one in the 72nd minute, forcing the Canadians to hold on for the narrow victory. "Theyve exceeded my expectations," said Priestman. "I knew we could play the way we played but I think the resilience and the defensive work under massive bouts of pressure, theyve done amazingly." Cameron Artis-Payne Jersey . Gorges is believed to have suffered the injury while blocking a shot with a hand during Montreals win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. The injury will keep the Finnish forward out of the Olympics. The 29-year-old has 20 goals and 41 points in 56 games this season, his first with Tampa Bay.HOUSTON -- Aaron Brooks had played just 15 minutes in his last six games and acknowledged he was a little shaky when he entered Houstons game against Minnesota late in the first quarter. It didnt take him long to settle down. Brooks scored a season-high 26 points to pick up the slack for the injured James Harden, and the Rockets beat the Timberwolves 112-101 on Saturday night. "When your All-Star goes out it takes a collective group to get it done," Brooks said. "Thats what we did -- everybody. Dwight (Howard) gave up a little bit of himself in scoring, passed it to others and we got the job done." Brooks, who entered the game averaging 2.8 points, had a big second quarter, making four 3-pointers and scoring 16 points. He finished with six 3-pointers. It was his most points since scoring 28 for the Rockets against Utah in April of 2010. Coach Kevin McHale talked about the challenge of Brooks stepping in when he hadnt been getting a lot of playing time. "Its very difficult," McHale said. "His second quarter was special. He really had it going. He was making shots. Aaron did a great job tonight." The Rockets led throughout, and Omri Casspi, Jeremy Lin and Brooks made consecutive 3-pointers in a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter and extend the lead to 91-74. Harden, who leads the Rockets with 24.2 points per game, sat out with a sore left foot. Lin started in his place and scored 19, but it was Brooks who shined. "(Brooks) was amazing," Howard said. "Shot the ball well, played great defence ... (he) was a big reason why we won the game." Kevin Love had 27 points and 15 rebounds, and Corey Brewer scored 22 for the Timberwolves. "When you try to make runs they kept hitting 3s," Love said. "We showed fight, but in the end its really tough when the first three shots of the fourth quarter are from 3 and they hit three in a row." Brooks, whos in his second stint with the Rockets, is a crowd favourite and the home fans cheered wildly every time he entered the game. Brooks also had five assists, four rebounds and a steal. "Well, I coached him, so Ive seen him do that a lot,&" said Minnesota coach Rick Adelman, who coached Brooks in Houston from 2008-11. Wes Horton Jersey. "It doesnt surprise me." Patrick Beverley had 17 points and made a career-high five 3-pointers, and Terrence Jones added 18 points and had 10 rebounds for Houston. Howard had 11 points and led the team with 13 rebounds. McHale loved the balanced scoring effort with Harden out, but was unhappy that his team had 23 turnovers to just 10 by the Timberwolves. "I told our guys we have to play more efficiently and a little bit smarter," McHale said. "Weve got to create more space for each other on the floor so we can attack." The Rockets led 82-74 entering the fourth quarter. The Timberwolves used a 15-4 spurt in the third quarter, fueled by three 3-pointers, to cut Houstons lead to 65-57. Love made a 3-pointer before a turnover by Chandler Parsons that led to a dunk by Brewer capped the run. An exasperated McHale put his hands on his head as he watched Brewers dunk and quickly called a timeout. McHales short pep talk must have gotten Houstons attention. The Rockets responded with a 10-5 run to extend their lead to 75-62 with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. The Rockets led by eight points late in the second quarter before using a 9-2 run thanks to three straight 3-pointers, including two by Brooks, to stretch the lead to 52-37. Minnesota scored five quick points on a dunk by Kevin Martin and a 3-pointer from Brewer to close the gap. But Lin sunk a 3-pointer at the buzzer to extend Houstons lead to 55-42 at halftime. NOTES: McHale said Harden visited a doctor on Saturday and they are going to change his treatment plan. He said Harden will likely miss Mondays game as well. ... Lin had a bump on his forehead and was holding ice on it after the game. It was unclear how he was injured and he wasnt available to reporters after the game because he was seeing a doctor. ... Also out for the Rockets on Saturday were Ronnie Brewer, who has a strained right calf, and Greg Smith, who has a sprained right knee. ... It was Howards ninth double-double of the season. ... Ricky Rubio had eight assists for Minnesota. Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Jerseys From China Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys ' ' '

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is picking Michigan State to win the NCAA mens basketball championship over defending champion Louisville. Brett Kern Jersey . In what has become an annual March Madness tradition at the White House, Obama filled out a bracket in a segment broadcast on ESPN Wednesday. Florida and Arizona rounded out Obamas Final Four picks. But he said the talents of Michigan State coach Tom Izzo made him pick the Spartans to go all the way. Obama said he knows his picks arent imaginative but expressed hope theyd help him win his pool this year. He noted that he hasnt had a lot of luck with his picks in the past. Last year he correctly picked Louisville to play in the championship game, but wrongly said the Cardinals would lose to Indiana. Earl Campbell Jersey . It was the start of one nice night for the goalie and the Minnesota Wild. Backstrom made 33 saves in his first win of the season and the Wild defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 on Saturday in a rematch of their first-round playoff series. Jurrell Casey Jersey . Johansen scored twice and Derek MacKenzie, Brandon Dubinsky and Cam Atkinson also had goals to lead the Blue Jackets to a 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, ending a three-game losing skid. http://www.titansstoreonline.com/Black-94-Austin-Johnson-Womens-Jersey/ . Striker Dario Mandzukic scored the opener in the 22nd minute but was given a red card nine minutes later for a reckless tackle and left Croatia with 10 men for the remainder of the match.Winnipeg Jets 4 Toronto Maple Leafs 2 (Jets 35-34-10, 18-18-4 road) – After getting mathematically eliminated from the playoff race Thursday, the Jets talked about finishing the season playing the right way, establishing good habits and playing for each other. Considering everything, it was a very solid effort and a character win by the Jets. The loss leaves the Leafs out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, in what was their final home game of the season. Jets played without Evander Kane, coachs decision, then lost the services of Dustin Byfuglien late in the second with an upper body injury. Jets got great efforts from pretty much the entire lineup. The Leafs opened the scoring, Phil Kessel with his 37th on a great pass from Tyler Bozak. Bryan Little with his 23rd tied the game less than four minutes later, assists to Michael Frolik and Mark Stuart. Little had his seven game point streak snapped Thursday, but with the goal is 3-6-9 in his last nine. The Leafs took the lead on Nazem Kadris 20th of the year. It was an easy open net tap in power play goal after Ondrej Pavelec misplayed a dump in, had it go off his stick to the front of the net making it 2-1 Leafs. A big goal for the Jets came in the dying seconds of the first as Jacob Trouba out fought James Van Reimsdyk for a loose puck in front of the Leafs net for his 10th of the year. Frolik and Andrew Ladd drew assists. Shots in the first were 12-8 Jets. The second period was all Jets, despite having to kill off two penalties in the first half of the period. On their second power play in the back half of the period, Toby Enstrom with his 10th of the year gave the Jets their first lead of the game. Enstrom walked the line from left to right and fired a screened shot past James Reimer. The goal ties a single season career high for Enstrom, assists went to Ladd and Blake Wheeler. SShots in the second period were14-7 in favour of the Jets. Curley Culp Jersey. When the Leafs did get chances, Pavelec was there to shut the door. Jets continued their strong play in the third, Coach Paul Maurice having to do some juggling with no Byfuglien. The Jets continued to be first on loose pucks and a great play by Wheeler, using his speed to set up Olli Jokinen for his 18th of the year making it 4-2. Jokinen has now scored in back to back games. The Leafs pulled Reimer with 2:45 remaining but a couple key saves from Pavelec and Wheeler using his speed to negate an icing call, helped the Jets close out the game. Shots in the third were 15-10 Jets and 41-25 Jets on the game. Jim Slater in his 499th NHL game, all with this organization, was key in the face-off department, winning nine of 15. Ladd, Wheeler and Frolik all had two point nights. Since December 1st Wheeler has 50 points in 51 games. He has 17 points in his last 14 games. Jacob Trouba at 26:10 again led the Jets in ice time. After missing the net 18 times Thursday, the Jets missed the net another 17 times tonight. The Jets directed a total of 71 shots at Reimer. Coach Maurice was "really happy" for his team. "We competed for pucks, played with tenacity, the bench was great. We got a bad break on their second goal but the bench stayed up beat and kept talking." Coach Maurice would not elaborate on Kane not playing, other than "coachs decision." "With Byfuglien out we had a hole in our forward lines. Eric Tangradi and Eric ODell gave us some good shifts. Key face-off wins for Jim Slater. Our team believed what they said, they would play for each other. One thing about this group, they care." Jets are home to Minnesota Monday and Boston Thursday (both TSN Jets, TSN 1290), then close out the season in Calgary Friday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). MELBOURNE, Australia - Elation turned to desolation for Daniel Ricciardo at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday after the Red Bull driver was stripped of his first podium finish due to a technical breach at Formula Ones season opener. Custom Philadelphia Eagles Jerseys . Ricciardo initially finished second to Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg to become the first homegrown driver to take to the podium in the 29-year history of the Australian GP. The celebrations did not last long as F1 stewards said his car breached fuel-flow rules introduced this year which limit cars to 100 kilograms of fuel during the race. World motorsport governing body FIA subsequently disqualified Ricciardo , elevating McLaren drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button to second and third. Red Bull immediately announced it will appeal. Shortly after the end of the race, FIA Formula One technical delegate Jo Bauer said Ricciardos car had "exceeded consistently the maximum allowed fuel flow" and referred the matter to stewards. More than three and a half hours later, after Ricciardo had left the track, the stewards disqualified the Australian saying Red Bull had not only breached technical regulations by exceeding the allowed fuel flow, but also had disregarded instructions before the race to change the fuel flow sensor and during the race to reduce the flow. The operation of the fuel-flow sensors had been a source of dispute between the teams and the FIA coming into the first race. After the findings, Red Bull said "Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The team and (engine-maker) Renault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations." Horner further proclaimed the teams innocence to reporters saying; "It is no fault of Daniel. I dont believe it is the fault of the team." "I am extremely disappointed, quite surprised ... hopefully through the appeal process it will be quite clear that the car has conformed at all times to the regulations," he added. "We would not be appealing unless we were extremely confident that we have a defendable case." The Albert Park crowd earlier offered Ricciardo a thunderous applause as the stood on the podium in his first race with Red Bull. "Its a bit overwhelming for now, but just an unbelievable day," the 24-year-old said shortly after. Australia staged its first Grand Prix of the F1 era in Adelaide in 1985, with the 1986 edition marking the final race of Australian world championship winner Alan Jones. Mark Webbers first F1 race was the 2002 Australian GP, and since then Australian fans have waited impatiently for a top-three finish at Albert Park. Red Bull, last years constructors champions and a dominant force in F1 for the past four years, had a difficult time in preseason testing and little was expected from its first race of the season. Malcolm Jenkins Jersey . LOUIS -- Joe Thornton and the San Jose Sharks won the matchup of unbeaten teams. Carson Wentz Jersey . "I only want to go through this one more time," Crosby said Friday. The 24-year-old captain hasnt played since the symptoms resurfaced following a loss to Boston on Dec. 5. Completely. Two days after releasing Peyton Manning, the longtime face of the franchise, the Colts announced they were cutting four fan favourites: running back Joseph Addai, linebacker Gary Brackett, safety Melvin Bullitt and tight end Dallas Clark.OKLAHOMA CITY - Tony Parker is dinged up again, and his status is unclear heading into the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat. The San Antonio Spurs All-Star point guard did not play in the second half or overtime of the Western Conference finals-clinching win over Oklahoma City on Saturday because of a sore left ankle. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich doesnt know what shape Parker will be in for Game 1 on Thursday in San Antonio. "I have no idea," Popovich said Saturday night. "I dont know what the deal is." Popovich said Parker sprained the ankle in Game 4 and aggravated it in Game 5. Popovich considered starting Manu Ginobili at point guard in Game 6 against the Thunder because Parker was having trouble during pregame. At halftime, Popovich made the decision to hold him out. "He came to me about eight minutes on the clock (before the second half) and said he couldnt go," Popovich said. "He couldnt cut. He was limping on it. He couldnt cut sideways or forward really." Popovich said he thought playing Parker in the second half would have hurt the team in the long term. "I didnt want him to be a hero because he was 50 per cent or less, we thought," Popovich said. "Thats probably bad for the team if you think about it. It was a tough decision to try to figure out whether to play him, and if you lose the game and it affects him for Monday night, then youre going to feel like you made an unwise choice." Parker has been plagued by injuries this year. He averaged 16.7 points and 5.7 assists while shooting 50 per cent from the field during the regular season, but he missed 22 games. He strained his left hamstring in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals aagainst Portland and did not return. Dallas Thomas Jersey. The Spurs won that game easily to clinch the series. Once again, his teammates bought him some rest. Had the Spurs lost Game 6, they would have faced an elimination game at home Monday against the Thunder. "We didnt know how much Tony was hurt in his ankle," forward Boris Diaw said. "But we didnt want to go to Game 7, and we didnt know if he would be ready to play if we did or if he would be 100 per cent, so we tried to get it over with tonight." Still, the Spurs have proven all season they can win without key players, posting the NBAs best record despite a series of injuries. "We have to continue to play basketball regardless of who is on the floor and our reserves did a great job - Cory (Joseph), Patty (Mills) - they stepped in and continued to run the offence and push the pace and playing good defence on their guards as well," guard Danny Green said. Joseph started the second half of Game 6 against Oklahoma City and helped engineer a 37-point third quarter. "Cory was very good," Ginobili said. "I mean, its hard to play when you dont have many opportunities to play in close games and stuff. But he did very well in Game 3 and 4 here. He always brings the juice, aggressiveness, competitiveness. He attacks the rim well. I think he made a few key plays." The Spurs said they excel without their stars because they are about a system, rather than individuals. "We have been doing what we did the whole year, which is passing the ball to each other, getting some movement, getting pace and getting into a good rhythm," Diaw said. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork. Ryan Anderson Jersey .com) - Russell Westbrook had 27 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder led wire-to-wire in a 103-91 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night. The Thunder were coming off a loss in New Orleans on Tuesday that spoiled Kevin Durants return from offseason foot surgery and ended the teams first winning streak of the season at two games. The reigning NBA MVP scored 27 points while playing nearly 30 minutes in his season debut. He played 29 minutes against the Sixers, scoring 10 on 3-of-11 shooting as Westbrook, in his third game back after missing 14 with a broken hand, led the way. Serge Ibaka added 19 points for the Thunder and Jeremy Lamb scored 15 off the bench, including a couple of 3-pointers that thwarted an attempted Sixers rally late in the fourth quarter. The Sixers fell to 1-18, landing right back in the losing column after getting their first win on the road against Minnesota on Wednesday night. The victory kept them from matching the 2009-10 Nets for the worst start to a season in NBA history, but they remain winless (0-11) at home. Robert Covington scored a career-high 21 points off the bench to lead the Sixers. Michael Carter-Williams had 16 points and 14 assists working against Westbrook all night and Nerlens Noel also posted a double-double, scoring 11 with 10 rebounds. Westbrook and Carter-Williams jawed often, including after Westbrook airballed a 3-pointer in the third quarter, when the second-year Sixers point guard had something to say. It came during a 7-0 Sixers run that trimmed Oklahoma Citys lead to 72-60. The Thunder went more than five minutes without a field goal, but stretched their lead to 18 with 1:25 left in the quarter. They carried an 82-67 advantage into the fourth and had another long field goal drought as the Sixers pulled within 10 points on Noels alley-oop dunk from Carter-Williams and later got as close as seven with three minutes left. There was no back down, said Sixers coach Brett Brown. We had one lull in the third quarter. ... But I thought after that, there was a lot of fight in that young group. But Lamb knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers around a Philadelphia turnover to cap an 8-0 Thunder flurry and put the game out of reach. Earlier, Westbrook had eight points and four of his seven assists in the first quarter and the Thunder shot better than 56 percent, leading by as many as nine. Reserve forward Covington kept the Thunder from pulling away, scoring seven points in the quarter for Philadelphia. Hollis Thompson hit a 3-pointer to cap a 9-0 Sixers run in the second that cut into a 16-point Oklahoma City lead, but the Thunder pushed it back to 14 and led 57-47 at halftime. Game Notes The Thunder have won 11 straight meetings since the last Sixers win in the series on Nov. 15, 2008 ... The Thunder will finish a three-game road trip in Detroit on Sunday ... The Sixers start a three-game road trip on Saturday in Detroit. Luc Mbah a Moute Jersey . - Doug Kalitta led Top Fuel qualifying Friday in the NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway with a 3. At a news conference Tuesday where it was thought that the fiery Schallibaum may be shown the door after a dismal finish to the Major League Soccer season, team president Joey Saputo said no decision has been made on whether the Swiss Volcano will be back in 2014.NEW YORK -- Geno Smith is still No. 1 for the New York Jets. For the moment. Whether its the second-year quarterbacks job to lose, well, offensive co-ordinator Marty Mornhinweg will see what effect Michael Vick has in whats expected to be a hotly contested competition this summer. "We brought Mike in to compete, to push Geno and to make Geno the very best he can make him, and I wanted to make sure Mike was ready for that," Mornhinweg said during a conference call Tuesday. "I think this thing is going to work beautifully. Well see." Smith started all 16 games for the Jets after incumbent Mark Sanchez was lost for the year after injuring his shoulder in the preseason. It was a roller-coaster ride for Smith and the Jets, as the young quarterback led four comeback victories in the fourth quarter or overtime in his first nine games, but then struggled mightily with six interceptions and no touchdowns in three straight losses. He bounced back with a solid final four games, with only two turnovers while leading the Jets to three wins and an 8-8 finish. "Were going to structure it a certain way," Mornhinweg said. "One thing I want to make sure of, that nothing impedes the young quarterbacks progression. Im talking about Geno. He progressed beautifully, and Im talking the last quarter of the season. Played like a winning quarterback, played at a high level." Not surprisingly, Mornhinweg acknowledged that Smith will take the first snaps with the starting offence when the team begins on-field practices in a few weeks. The Jets did the same last spring with Sanchez getting the first snaps over Smith. "Geno will get a few more reps, but not many (more)," Mornhinweg said. "Im going to try to do this thing right, and itll vary day to day, much like Ive done it in the past." Smith said last week hes taking the approach that hes the starter, and Vick acknowledged that when he signed with New York last month. But that doesnt mean Vick will be resigned to the fact he will be the backup, and thats one reason Mornhinweg was happy to be reunited with the veteran after their four seasons together in Philadelphia. "He has a really important role here," he said of Vick. "Hes 33 years old, and hes still got it. I look at him as a young 33. Hes still got it. ... When hes called uupon to play, Ive got great confidence in Mike. Nene Jersey. ." And, if it turns out its in a mentor-type role as it was for Vick last year with Nick Foles in Philadelphia, Mornhinweg anticipates no issues. "Mikes going to handle that real well," he said. "Hes going to do the right thing." Vick is extremely familiar with Mornhinwegs system, theoretically giving the Jets two starting-calibre quarterbacks who can run the offence with little drop-off in case of injury or ineffectiveness. "I would expect Geno to progress at a high rate with Mikes help," Mornhinweg said. "I want to get Mike back comfortable with our terminology, with our system, exactly how we want these things done, so its just that simple. Vick isnt the only newcomer to an offence that finished 25th overall and struggled with consistency last season. The Jets signed former Titans star Chris Johnson to bolster the backfield and former Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker to upgrade perhaps the teams weakest spot a year ago. Mornhinweg is intrigued by the pass-catching ability Johnson has, but also believes he can be the "electric, dynamic" type of running back he was during his best years in Tennessee now that hes healthy. "Thats a pretty good little 1-2 punch," Mornhinweg said of the Chris Ivory-Johnson pairing. Decker had 87 receptions for 11 touchdowns last season while catching passes from Peyton Manning. Meanwhile, the Jets leading receiver was Jeremy Kerley with 43 catches, and it was clear New York would need to get better at the position through free agency -- they also signed Jacoby Ford -- and the draft. "Last year," Mornhinweg said, "I thought was quite possibly the start of something special." NOTES: Defensive co-ordinator Dennis Thurman said "the skys the limit" for Dee Milliner, the Jets top pick last year who will assume the No. 1 CB spot with the departure of Antonio Cromartie. Milliner struggled at times while dealing with injuries, but Thurman believes he can become "a very good corner." ... While cornerback remains a potential target in the first round, Thurman expressed confidence in his current group. "Im comfortable with our cornerback situation," he said. "We have guys who can play." Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Jerseys From China Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys ' ' '

Jackson says, "The three of us are similar in our philosophies and our approach to the game." Rambis was part of eight NBA title teams with the Lakers, either as a player, assistant coach or adviser/assistant general manager. He was head coach with the Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves over three seasons. Rambis finished his third stint as an assistant coach with the Lakers last season. Liriano pitched in and out of trouble in his duel with Josh Beckett, and Ike Davis homered to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 Friday night. Liriano (1-5) scattered five hits over 5 2-3 scoreless innings. After entering with a 5.06 ERA, he struck out eight and walked two in his 12th start of the year. "It was a great feeling to get that first win out of the way," said Liriano, a 16-game winner for Pittsburgh last season. "It was a long time, and I felt like I wasnt doing my job. I just want to try to go deeper into the game my next time out." Beckett (3-2) allowed two runs and five hits in five innings, five days after pitching the first no-hitter in the majors this season during a 6-0 win at Philadelphia. Yasiel Puig reached base for the 31st straight game, getting an infield single in the fourth and continuing to second on Lirianos throwing error. He came up with the bases loaded in the fifth and popped up on a changeup for the third out, making him 0 for 5 in those situations. "Francisco pitched out of the stretch most of the night, and the leadoff hitter reached base in five of those six innings," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle pointed out. "To get Puig, thats just a classic matchup on a Friday night in front of 47,000 -- thats good stuff. There were so many important pitches in that sequence, but he stayed focused and was aggressive. He had eight strikeouts, and a lot of them were with guys on second." Despite Lirianos record, hes been able to keep his team in games more often than not. The Pirates have won all six of his no-decisions. "Thats what we continue to tell Frank," Hurdle said. "Fortunately, hes been around. Hes had to battle through so many things, and this is just the next thing hes going to get challenged by at the major league level. Hes kept his composure and his confidence, so well see where he can take it. I just believe its going to get better and better for him." Beckett was removed for a pinch-hitter after 88 pitches -- the 34-year-old righty threw a career-high 128 in the first no-hitter by a Dodgers pitcher since 1996. "Physically, I felt fine. I took care of myself in between starts, and I was ready to go out there," Beckett said. "I didnt feel any different between this start and my last one. I mean, if you look aat those 128 pitches in nine innings, its only 13, 14 pitches per inning. Kai Forbath Jersey. " Pirates second baseman Neil Walker robbed Matt Kemp of an RBI single in the sixth with a diving stop toward the middle and threw him out, after Hanley Ramirez led off with a double. Liriano faced one more batter, striking out Scott Van Slyke with his 100th pitch. Justin Wilson then fanned Andre Ethier. Mark Melancon gave up an RBI single to Ramirez in the eighth, but retired pinch-hitter Adrian Gonzalez on a grounder with the potential tying run at second. Jason Grilli pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save. Beckett retired the side in order only once. He hit Starling Marte with a 2-2 pitch to open the third and Clint Barmes followed with a walk. Marte was picked off second, but the Pirates overcame that miscue with singles by Josh Harrison and Walker, whose hit to right field drove in Barmes with the games first run. Davis led off the fourth with a drive to centre that travelled an estimated 453 feet. It was his fourth home run of the season, including two grand slams against Cincinnati. "Beckett was on the corners all night and his stuff was good, but that fastball caught a little more of the plate and I was able to get the good part of the bat on it," Davis said. "We really didnt do too much off him, but we scored just enough runs. Its hard to beat the Dodgers only scoring two runs, but our pitchers were amazing tonight." Drew Butera, who caught Becketts no-hitter, also was behind the plate for Lirianos no-no with Minnesota on May 3, 2011, against the White Sox in Chicago. He threw out Russell Martin and Harrison on stolen base attempts for the third out in the second and fifth innings, respectively. NOTES: It was the 19th time since 1900 that a pitcher made his first start following a no-hitter against an opponent who also had pitched one. The last time that happened was May 7, 2012, when Jered Weaver of the Angels faced Liriano and beat Minnesota for the second time in five days, 8-3. ... Dee Gordon stole two more bases to raise his major league-leading total to 34, and the Dodgers total to 64 -- also tops in the majors. ... Pirates LHP Tony Watson extended his scoreless streak to 15 2-3 innings with a perfect seventh. ... Cincinnati LHP Johnny Vander Meer (193 remains the only pitcher to throw no-hitters in consecutive starts. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Over their 13 seasons, the Columbus Blue Jackets have wilted at the finish a lot of times. Dennis Smith Jersey . They did again on Tuesday night, giving up a tying goal in the waning seconds of regulation. But they more than made up for it later. Ryan Johansen took a stretch pass from James Wisniewski and scored on a wrist shot at 3:33 of overtime to lead the Blue Jackets to a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night, tying a franchise record for wins. "It could have been one of those oh-no moments," Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said of the Coyotes Oliver Ekman-Larssons tying goal with just 14.6 seconds left in regulation. "But credit to the guys. We went out and found a way to win." When Johansen, a 21-year-old, notched his 32nd goal, a roaring crowd of 16,289 was so loud it was deafening. "I was sitting on the bench just admiring it," Johansen said with a grin. "It was loud. It was pretty cool to watch. Its great we could finish it out for them and make them even happier." Not only did Johansens goal provide the Blue Jackets 41st victory to match their most, but it also pushed them even closer to a spot in the playoffs. They retain the second wild-card spot in the East and moved just two points back of third-place Philadelphia in the Metropolitan Division. "It was huge for us," said Blake Comeau, who had given the Blue Jackets a 3-2 lead with just over 6 minutes left. "Everyone knew how important these points are this time of year. We could let off the gas and gotten down on ourselves after that late goal. But the guys did a great job of rallying." The Blue Jackets improved to 41-31-7, matching the victory total set in 2008-09 -- the only time the club has made the playoffs. Sergei Bobrovsky had 29 saves, Boone Jenner and Mark Letestu also had goals and Artem Anisimov added two assists for Columbus, which heads out on the road to close the regular season. "We go on this three-game road trip now feeling a little better about our game and ourselves," Johansen said. The Blue Jackets had taken a 3-2 lead with 6:18 left when Comeau pulled up on a rush and snapped off a shot from the top of the left circle that got past goalie Thomas Greiss. "I just tried to fire it on net, to be honest, as hard as I could," Comeau said. With the crowd cheering every play down the stretch, the Coyotes silenced them by tying it. Ekman-Larsson circled at the point and ripped a shot that flew through heavy congestion in front to get past a surprised Bobrovsky. "(Mike Ribeiro) got it up to me and I just walked the line and tried to shoot the puck and I was lucky it went in," Ekman-Larsson said after his 15th of the season. After a Phoenix turnover, Wisniewski sent a long pass to Johansen who raced in from the left wing with one defender back and tucked a hard wrist shot inside the far post against Greiss, who had 26 saves. "It was a roller-coaster," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "Our effort was really strong. Our execution, well, it was a choppy game. A team would turn over the puck and the other team would score and get the advantage." Martin Erat and Shane Doan also had goals for the Coyotes, who have lost five in a row (0-2-3). They came in with 86 points, just a point back of Dallas which holds the second wild-card spot in the West. "It was a nice shot by their guy," Doan said. "This is a tough place to play. Bobrovsky is a great goalie. They have some great young players who go to the net hard and they play hard. We wanted to find ways to get to the net and we did. We just needed to make one more play." In the end, Columbus got the puck onto the stick of the right guy. "We got one of our most talented players in a position to make a play," Richards said. "And he made the play." Notes: After the game, Columbus left for a game at Dallas on Wednesday for the resumption of a suspended game from last month, then will play back-to-back games at Tampa Bay and Florida on Friday and Saturday. ... Nathan Horton played one shift in the second period for the Blue Jackets after missing four games and then left with an apparent recurrence of a lower-body injury. ... Phoenix RW Radim Vrbata assisted on Erats goal to reach 50 points in a season for the third time (07-08, 11-12). ... Erat has 17 goals and 42 assists in 62 career games against Columbus. Jean (25-0), of Montreal, is to face International Boxing Federation champion Lamont Peterson (31-2-1), whose promoter Golden Boy won a purse bid to stage the bout. Estaphan said Golden Boy, which still has seven days to set a date, is looking at having the fight at the Barclays Center in New York, although Las Vegas remains an option. "New York would be better because more of my fans can come," said Jean. "I see Peterson as a beatable opponent. "Hes a good boxer, but I wouldnt call him a complete athlete. He has shown some weaknesses in his career." Estaphan, head of Eye of the Tiger Management, said Montreal heavyweight Bermane Stiverne may also get a title shot in 2014. He said he was assured by handlers of WBC champion Vitali Klitschko that the Ukrainians next bout will be a mandatory title defence against Stiverne, poossibly in April. Justin Simmons Jersey. . If so, it could be a busy time for the 42-year-old Klitschko, who is a member of parliament in Ukraine and recently announced he will run for president. "When a representative of Klitschkos company approaches you with a proposition, its a sign that things are moving forward," said Estaphan, who returned this week from a WBC congress in Bangkok. He also said that Montreal light welterweight Ghislain Maduma, currently ranked fourth, will have an elimination bout to try to become mandatory challenger for the WBC belt. "Not only could we have three world title fights in 2014, but we could have three world champions from Quebec," Estaphan said. The only Canadian currently holding a world title is Adonis Stevenson of Montreal, who will defend his WBC light heavywight belt Nov. 30 in Quebec City. Paris, France - Roger Federer was among the winners Sunday in the first round of the French Open. Filip Forsberg Jersey . The fourth-seeded Swiss didnt face a break point in a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Slovakian Lukas Lacko on Court Chatrier. Federer won 39 of 44 points on first serve, swatted seven aces and held a lopsided edge in winners (40-13). The 2009 French Open champ was pleased to get off to a good start. "Theres always that little bit of feeling that if you dont feel well, if the opponent plays great and whatever happens, you could lose early. I was happy getting early signs out of the match that I was actually playing well and I was going to get my chances," said Federer, who is seeking a record-extending 18th Grand Slam title. Lacko, who was broken five times, has lost in the opening round 14 times in 20 major appearances. Sixth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych, eighth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic, 10th- seeded American John Isner and 13th-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also advanced. Berdych, a semifinalist at this clay-court Grand Slam in 2010, beat Canadian qualifier Peter Polansky 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, Raonic topped Australian wild card Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, Isner grinded out a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over French wild card Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Tsonga battled past countryman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, 6-2. Dan Uggla hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the ninth inning, Monday night that lifted Atlanta to a wild 9-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Evan Gattis also homered twice and Uggla drove in five runs as the Braves won their fourth straight. The teams combined for five homers and 12 runs in the final two innings. Gattis, Uggla and Andrelton Simmons hit consecutive homers in the eighth that put Atlanta ahead 5-1. "We have a lot of guys who can change the game with one swing," Uggla said. "Tonight we were able to put some at-bats together. Didnt have much going early on but we were able to get to them." Domonic Browns three-run homer capped a five-run bottom of the eighth that gave the Phillies a 6-5 lead. But the Braves rallied against Jake Diekman (1-1). B.J. Upton walked, Freddie Freeman reached on a grounder when second baseman Chase Utley made a questionable decision to try for a forceout and Justin Upton walked to load the bases with no outs. After Gattis struck out swinging at a 98 mph fastball, Uggla drove an 0-1 slider from Diekman deep into the seats in left. "(Diekman) has electric stuff," Uggla said. "Its not a comfortable at-bat at all. He throws really hard and has great stuff. Well take it." Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was impressed with his teams comeback, but not surprised by it -- especially at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. "Its a resilient squad and in this ballpark weve seen it enough," Gonzalez said. "If you make a mistake, its in the seats." Neither teams closer was available. Philadelphias Jonathan Papelbon wasnt used because he had pitched three straight days, and Atlantas Craig Kimbrel has a sore shoulder. "For all those people who say anybody can close in the ninth, its a little different, a different animal," Gonzalez said. Gonzalez said Kimbrel, who experienced discomfort after recording his fifth save of the season on Saturday, is day to day. Luis Avilan (3-1) wound up with the win and David Carpeenter got his first save. Pekka Rinne Jersey. Ryan Howard homered and Marlon Byrd drove in two runs for Philadelphia. Utley had two hits, and is batting .489 this season. "We made a comeback," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "The guys really battled and had good at-bats. We just werent able to close the door in the ninth." Braves starter Ervin Santa matched his career high with 11 strikeouts. He pitched six innings and gave up one run and four hits. "Ive been so impressed with him," Gonzalez said. "Hes got command, hes got some life, he knows how to pitch." Gattis put Atlanta in front 2-1 with a two-run homer in the sixth off Roberto Hernandez. After the Braves hit three more homers in the eighth, the Phillies loaded the bases with no outs against Avilan. Howard struck out looking, but Byrd hit a two-run single that made it 5-3. Brown gave Philadelphia the lead with his first homer since last Aug. 14. The Upton brothers didnt get any hits, but they almost hit each other. Justin sent a liner that nearly took out B.J. as he led off third base. B.J. had to dive out of the way, got up slowly and stared at Justin in the batters box in mock disgust. NOTES: Freeman went 0 for 4, ending his nine-game hitting streak. ... Phillies C Carlos Ruiz made two throwing errors, both trying to nab B.J. Upton stealing second. ... Phillies RHP A.J. Philadelphia reliever Mike Adams will be activated from the DL on Tuesday. Adams, who is recovering from right shoulder surgery, hasnt pitched since last June. ... GREATER NOIDA, India - Sebastian Vettel will start from pole position at the Indian Grand Prix, shoring up the Red Bull drivers bid for an almost inevitable fourth straight Formula One title. Jason Kipnis Jersey . Vettel only needs to finish fifth or better Sunday to wrap up the championship with three races remaining, and bettered his own lap record to claim his third straight pole at Buddh International Circuit. The German has won both previous Indian GP races, leading every lap. He clocked 1 minute, 24.119 seconds to beat his nearest rival by 0.7 seconds. Nico Rosberg will share the front of the grid after finishing second, with fellow Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton third and Red Bulls Mark Webber fourth. "Its a very good result for the team with Mark sitting in fourth behind those guys," Vettel said. Red Bull can also make it the fourth straight double of drivers and constructors titles if Ferrari fails to outscore it by more than 19 points. Felipe Massa starts from fifth, while Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso could only manage eighth. "Im starting 8th so I have to recover this position somewhere in the race," Alonso said of his chance of a podium finish. "The soft tires may last with good conditions ... but if the soft are a disaster tomorrow, people in front will have problems." Romain Grosjean, who was expected to challenge for the podium, was eliminated in the first round of qualifying after Lotus gamble on sticking with medium tires backfired. The Frenchman will start from 17th on the grid. "We just missed the cut-off time, everyone went quicker than we thought," Grosjean said. "Today, for some reason, the medium (tires) were not quick enough. Its a decision we took together, we were confident we could do enough with them but we got it wrong." Vettel and Webber chose differing tire strategies for qualifying, with Vettel electing to use the quicker but fragile soft compound for the third round and race start, and Webber preferring the medium compound. "Which works out to be the right strategy, well find out tomorrow. But the race is long and well have plenty of time to make up," Vettel said. "In the end I think the strategy shouldnt determine the result that much." Vettel has dominated since arriving in India, leading all three practice sessions. "Up to now its been successful," he said. "On a knifes edge all the time, but for now its worked and it seems were a step forward from where we were in recent races." Hamilton, while happy with qualifying, was pessimistic of his chances of challenging the Red Bulls. "Im really happy with the result and the lap time I was able to get. ... Well try and push these guys as hard as possible in the race obviously," he said. "Theyre in another world, but well try and stay ahead of the rest." Force India failed to qualify in the top 10 for its home race, with Paul Di Resta and Adrian Sutil eliminated in the second round in 12 and 13th respectively. PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. Willian Jersey . -- Tiger Wood

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. Willian Jersey . -- Tiger Woods was voted PGA Tour player of the year for the 11th time on the strength of his five big wins and return to No. 1 in the world. It was the third time Woods won the Jack Nicklaus Award despite not winning a major. He made up for that with two World Golf Championships and The Players Championship among his five wins. No one else won more than twice this year, and Woods won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average and the PGA Tour money title. "Its been an incredible year to have won five times, two of those World Golf Championships and one Players," Woods said on a conference call Friday. "Its been just a fantastic year all around. Its also an incredible feeling to be voted by your peers, and to have that type of respect is something thats very humbling." The PGA Tour does not release the percentage of votes won or even who finished second. Jordan Spieth was voted rookie of the year in a race that likely was no contest. The 20-year-old Texan began the year with no status on any tour. He won the John Deere Classic, lost in a playoff at another event, reached the Tour Championship, was chosen for the Presidents Cup team and wound up 10th on the money list with nearly $4 million. He will be the youngest American -- and first PGA Tour rookie -- to play in the Presidents Cup next week in Ohio. "I dont know if its a pinch me moment yet," Spieth said. "I think my mind is still really on next week." Woods was on the ballot with British Open champion Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Adam Scott, FedEx Cup champion Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar. Mickelson also won the Phoenix Open and was runner-up in the U.S. Open for the sixth time. Along with his first major, Scott won The Barclays. If either of them had won the Tour Championship, three wins and a major might have won some votes over five big wins and no majors. Mickelson, with more wins (42) and majors (five) than any player except for Woods dating to the Tom Watson generation, has never been PGA Tour player of the year, No. 1 in the world ranking or won a PGA Tour money title. The Jack Nicklaus Award began in 1990. In 24 years, Woods has won it 11 times and only two other players have won it twice -- Fred Couples (1991, 1992) and Nick Price (1993, 1994). It was the fourth time in the last five years that the winner did not capture a major. Woods nearly made it a clean sweep of all the awards. Steve Stricker narrowly beat him out for the Byron Nelson Award with a 65 on the final day at East Lake in the Tour Championship. That award is for lowest scoring average, though it is not as prestigious as the Vardon Trophy from the PGA of America. The Vardon Trophy dates to 1937 and requires 60 rounds (instead of 50 for the PGA Tours version of the award) with no incomplete rounds. It was the first time since 2009, right before his personal life unraveled, that Woods won these awards. Even though he has more of them than anyone in history, he said that it doesnt get old. "I know how hard it is," Woods said. "Ive had to work my way back from injuries on numerous occasions throughout the years. These last couple years is no exception to that. There were a lot of people saying I could never win again, and two years later Ive got eight wins on our tour. Im very proud of where Ive come from, from being ranked outside the top 50 to being ranked where I am now, and to have had the success that Ive had this year just makes it all the more rewarding." He said his biggest win this year was at The Players Championship, mainly because its the one golf course he plays regularly that has given him fits. His other wins this year came on courses where he won for at least the fourth time. "You start playing golf courses that you like and that suit your game," Woods said. "Guys generally play that schedule and give themselves the best opportunity to win tournaments and to have a nice living out on tour. For me, The Players Championship is the big event and against probably the strongest field we play all year. I havent had a lot of success since 2001. "To finally put myself there with the chance and the way I was hitting it to get it done on that Sunday, boy, it sure felt good." Woods and Spieth won two different awards, though both pointed to the area of improvement -- the majors. Woods has been stuck on 14 majors since 2008, though he had a chance in the final round this year at the British Open. Spieth missed the cut at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship and tied for 44th in the British Open. "I think next year Im really going to focus on those," said Spieth, who is No. 21 in the world. "Maybe build a schedule or game plan around how to have success and maybe compete at those four events, and I think that would be a better year for me." Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. [url=http://www.therocketsofficial

Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. Chris Paul Jersey . This week, they discuss the strategy of the CFLPA, the Oilers hiring of Bob Nicholson, the Alouettes firing of offensive coordinator Rick Worman and the U.S. Open. Gary Lawless, TSN Radio - My thumb is down to the ill-fated strategy of the CFLPA and the underwhelming results theyve achieved once again. Disorganized and delusional best describe the players union in this latest CFL labour impasse. Their first offer was inflammatory and unattainable. They followed up with a series of retreats and eventual surrender. The CFLPA has followed the lead of legal counsel Ed Molstad since 1974. Lacking best describes the results. The CFLPA needs to represent its constituency with a spirit of inclusion and a face of diversity. The union must look inward and evolve. Questions must be asked and answered and hard decisions executed. The CFLPA finds itself at the intersection of change and rot. Its time to pick a new route. Steve Simmons, Sun Media - My thumb is up to Edmonton Oilers owner Darryl Katz for going outside the family and hiring Bob Nicholson to oversee everything that is Oiler. This isnt necessarily a hockey move as much as it is a business move but in either area Nicholson is clearly equipped for the challenge. And this is a challenge both in the standings and from what Katz wants from the newly formed business called Oilers Entertainment Group. Sports is no longer about only wins and losses. Its so much about veneer. In Edmonton, there will be a new downtown arena, an area to grow around it, a footprint for the future. When Nicholson took over Hockey Canada, it was a small disorganized operation, lacking in business acumen. He left it as a hockey corporation. The Oilers are fortunate to have him. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated - My thumb is down to the Alouettes for the firing of offensive coordinator Rick Worman. Three months after coach Tom Higgins hired Worman, he canned him - before Montreal had played an exhibition game. Higgins was right to act sooner rather than later, unlike 2013 when the era of occupationally-challenged head coach Dan Hawkins lasted five games. But the abrupt dismissal speaks to the dysfunction of the franchise, whose owner, Robert Wetenhall, hired Higgins without involving GM Jim Popp. The Alouettes used to stand for quality on the field and steadfastness off it. If the Worman saga is an indication, soon the only thing the Alouettes will stand for is O Canada. Dave Hodge, TSN - My thumb is up to the U.S. Open golf championship, with emphasis on "open". To win the Masters, you have to be invited. To win the Open, you have to qualify, and everyone is eligible to try, which means anyone from anywhere can win. And that creates interest because "anyone" can be someone like 49-year-old Fran Quinn, who put his name on the leaderboard with a first-round 68. Who is Fran Quinn? He has one year of experience on the PGA Tour. Last year? No, 1992. He played in 18 events that year and he missed the cut 12 times. This year, he has played one event - on the Web.com Tour, golfs development league, if you will. Fran Quinn is still playing at Pinehurst - he followed his 68 with rounds of 74 and 79. He wont win. But he had a chance to win. Ryan Anderson Jersey . You can watch all the action on TSN2 beginning at 7pm et/4pm pt. As future stars prepare to make the big leap to the professional ranks, TSNs Draft Week delivers wall-to-wall coverage of both the NHL and NBA Entry Drafts, highlighted by exclusive live coverage of both events. The Florida Panthers had money to spend in free agency, and loaded up, bringing in four forwards, one defenceman and a goaltender on the first day of free agency. Numbers Game looks at the Panthers big first day of free agency. The Panthers Get: LW Jussi Jokinen, C Dave Bolland, C, Derek MacKenzie, RW Shawn Thornton, D Willie Mitchell, G Al Montoya. The Florida Panthers headed into the offseason giving general manager Dale Tallon more financial freedom than theyve had in recent seasons, and he wasted no time spending that money, with mixed results. Jokinen, 31, had a strong season playing on Evgeni Malkins wing in Pittsburgh, scoring 57 points in 81 games, the second-best point total of his career. That situation is not a luxury that Jokinen can count on in Florida where, despite their young talent, they have no one in Malkins class, but Jokinen has shown that he can be a productive contributor with solid possession numbers when playing with skilled players. Slot him alongside young Finn Aleksander Barkov and that has the makings of a solid two-way line and maybe Jokinen isnt likely to be scoring 50-plus points in Florida, where no one scored even 40 points last season, but Jokinen can be a useful player for at least three of the four years for which he signed, at a total cost of $16-million. Then, things got silly. Coming into free agency, there was a natural connection to make between Dave Bolland and Panthers GM Dale Tallon, given their time together in Chicago, but Bolland is a third-line centre so its really hard to justify the kind of money and term that was given. Bolland signed a five-year, $27.5-million contract, and its just flat-out outrageous. Bolland played well with the Maple Leafs last season, at least he did when he was healthy, but hes missed 142 games over the past five seasons and is coming off a season in which he missed 59 games due to a sliced ankle tendon. At his best, Bolland has been productive, scoring more than 35 points three times, and handled a lot of tough assignments in terms of zone starts and quality of competition, but assuming that hes up to that level now, after his latest injury, seems a tad optimistic and paying money and term that is more typical of a top-six forward is just really difficult to digest. For a checking centre, he also hasnt been very good at limiting shots against while killing penalties. Sure, the Panthers are nowhere near the cap now, and maybe they never will be, but its hard to take a team from being also-rans to contenders simply by paying a checking centre a boatload of money. By contrast, Paul Stastny and Thomas Vanek were the only two free agent forwards to come at a higher cap hit and neither one ssigned for five years. Hakeem Olajuwon Jersey. They didnt get as much term as Dave Bolland. MacKenzie, a 33-year-old checking centre, has been a reliable fourth-liner for the Blue Jackets. He had a career-high 237 hits last season and in four seasons with the Blue Jackets, hes won 54.9% of his draws. Signed for three years and $3.9-million, MacKenzie gives the Panthers good depth down the middle and it looks like Bolland and MacKenzie are going to bump prospects like Brandon Pirri and Vince Trocheck down the depth chart, presumably right out of the Top 12 unless they can fit on the wing. Shawn Thornton is a tough guy whose game has been declining in recent seasons. Hes fought 90 times over the past six seasons, but thats about what the 36-year-old (who turns 37 later this month) can do at this point. Whether thats worth more than a million dollars per season or multiple years probably has different answers for teams that arent trying to reach the salary floor. After missing the entire 2012-2013 season, Willie Mitchell had a nice comeback season, playing more than 20 minutes a night, a crucial part of the Kings second Stanley Cup win in the past three seasons. Hes 37, so not the fleetest afoot, but Mitchell has size, strength and adds a shot of reliability to the Panthers defence. In Mitchell and Brian Campbell (at least for now), the Panthers have a couple veterans that could show the way for first overall draft pick Aaron Ekblad and Mitchell, while a decent addition gets a nice payday -- two years, $8.5-million -- to eat some minutes on the Panthers blueline. Backup goaltender Al Montoya is a 29-year-old who posted a .920 save percentage in 28 games with the Jets last season. Trouble is, in the prevous two seasons, his save percentage was .894, so its not really reasonable to expect more than Montoyas career average which is .910. Adding Montoya would figure to mark the end of Dan Ellis time in Florida, though it may be difficult to find a taker for a 34-year-old coming off the worst season of his career. The Florida Panthers spent big money in the summer of 2011, overpaying a bunch of veterans in order to reach the salary floor, and this year has a similar feel to it. The issue for the Panthers is that they are a franchise that has reached the postseason once in the past 13 years; they dont need to overpay free agents as much as they need to build a stable base of talent. With all the money the Panthers spent on July 1, theres not much reason to believe any of those players are going to be long-term answers. EDMONTON -- Simeon Rottier spent the CFL off-season working relentlessly on improving his football skills, determined to prove that 2013 is a season best forgotten. Tim McCarver Jersey . The six-foot-six, 295-pound guard became the focal point of much that was wrong with last years Edmonton Eskimos when general manager Ed Hervey publicly chastised him after a Labour Day loss to Calgary, saying it wouldnt bother him if Rottier "didnt play another down this year." The native of Westlock, Alta., was back in the lineup a week later after the CFL Players Association complained Hervey was offside with his comments. When the Eskimos play their second and final pre-season game in Regina Friday, Rottier will again be the starting left guard. "This off-season I worked as hard as I could to come in ready and put last year behind me," Rottier said after the teams walk-through Thursday. "I was just happy to come back here and start a fresh year. Thats the bottom line and thank God for a second chance." Every returning Eskimo is getting another chance this season after the team turned over its entire coaching staff. Former Toronto defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones was hired as head coach and he brought in eight new assistants and handed the responsibility for shoring up the much-maligned offensive line to Johathan Himebauch. Although the coaches and returning players would rather forget last year, Himebauch, a veteran CFL coach has become acutely aware that wont be easy. "I know theres been a lot more attention. This is the most interviews Ive done in my career," he said with a smile. "Ive been here two weeks and done so many interviews my wife keeps laughing and saying, What are you doing out there?" As training camp winds down, Himebauch says he hasnt detected any "residual feelings from last year. "When Chris came in he told all the coaches, dont bring up last year, dont bring up the past of where this team has been because its not important." Rottier said theres a different feeling around the offensive line, which has five newcomers on the depth chart. Theres no obvious worrying about pressure or thinking about last season. "Last year there was a little too much stressing out about the pressure. We were worried about making mistakes, now were just going to cut it loose." Its a huge offensive line. Guard Andrew Jones, a first-year Eskimo, is the shortest at six-foot-three and third-year guard Matt ODonnell the tallest at six-foot-11. Rottier is the only one listed less than 300 pounds. "When I talk to them at practice I make them take a knee because my knee hurts from staring up at these guys," said Himebauch. "They are big human being and when they understand that they can be very powerful, that they can remove people, that they can create a great pocket for the quarterback, when they gain that confidence they can do special things." Carlos Martinez Jersey . He looked very comfortable Wednesday night. Konerko had a big three-run double and Gordon Beckham homered for the second straight game, leading the Chicago White Sox to an 8-3 victory over the sliding Chicago Cubs. Matt Adams Jersey . Fielder ended 4-for-5 with a solo homer, while Avila was 4-for-4 with two runs scored for the Tigers, who put the brakes on a three-game skid and rebounded from a loss in Mondays opener. Victor Martinez and Austin Jackson both contributed two hits, an RBI and a run scored as Detroit maintained its healthy lead atop the AL Central. http://www.baseballcardinalsauthority.com/Pat-Neshek-Jersey/ . Trailing 5-4 in the third set, the 12th-ranked Isner fought off two match points and evened it at 5-5 with consecutive aces. The former University of Georgia star had his only service break of the match to go up 6-5 before firing the last four of his 30 aces to close out Ginepri, an Atlanta resident ranked 281st.CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Andy Dalton isnt shying away from the comparisons any longer. Until now, the Bengals fourth-year quarterback has avoided linking his name with some of the NFLs best, even as he accomplished things that few others could claim. Thats changed with his ongoing negotiations over a contract extension. Its time to accentuate the positives from his first three seasons. "Well, Im very confident in what Ive done," he said. "The people who are the critics, they look at all of the negatives. They dont look at all of the stuff that Ive accomplished. They dont look at that Im one of three quarterbacks in the history of the NFL to do certain things. They dont look at that kind of stuff. "They want to find ways to tear me down, but Im not worried about that. They can say whatever they want. All that matters is what everyone believes in this organization and what I believe in myself." There are a lot of rarified numbers he can cite: -- Dalton, Dan Marino and Peyton Manning are the only ones to throw 20 or more touchdown passes in each of their first two seasons. -- Dalton is one of only five starting quarterbacks to lead their teams to the playoffs in each of their first three seasons, along with the Rams Pat Haden, the Dolphins Marino, the Browns Bernie Kosar and the Ravens Joe Flacco. -- If the Bengals reach the playoffs again this season, hell join Flacco as the only starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to reach the playoffs in each of their first four seasons. -- Dalton has already set numerous franchise records for passing. He threw for a club-record 4,293 yards and 33 touchdowns last season. The big blemish: 0-3 in the post-season. Dalton has given some of his worst performances in the playoffs, setting up three straight opening-round exits. Dalton is entering the final year on his contract. Hes emphasizing those regular-season accomplishments while making his case for a new deal. "We are obviiously comparing guys in their first three years -- what they have done, what they are doing now, and presenting them with stuff," Dalton said. Michael Wacha Jersey. "That is how we have come up with what we are wanting." Whos the best comparison? "Lets see here: Flacco, (Aaron) Rodgers, (Drew) Brees. Who else? Matt Ryan. All those top guys," he said. His biggest shortcoming also leaves him in some pretty good company. Hes one of seven NFL quarterbacks who who have lost an opening playoff game three seasons in a row, according to STATS. The others: Warren Moon (4), Otto Graham (3), Y.A. Tittle (3), Bert Jones (3), Joe Montana (3) and Randall Cunningham (3). "This is a big year," Dalton said. "Just from the standpoint of OK, now Ive been through it three times now. Ive played well. Ive been to the playoffs. Obviously the playoffs havent gone well for us, but its not just me." Dalton turned the ball over three times in the second half of a 27-10 loss to San Diego at Paul Brown Stadium that extended Cincinnatis playoff misery. The Bengals havent won a playoff game in 23 years. Their three straight opening-game losses tie the league record. Dalton has studied video of the playoff loss during the off-season. "We had chances in the game. Obviously the turnovers killed us," he said. "I wish I would have done some things differently in the game. It didnt turn out that way. Youve got to take the good things that happened last season and improve on them." Coach Marvin Lewis fell to 0-5 in the playoffs but got a year added to his contract, which now runs through 2015. He has reassured Dalton privately and insisted publicly that the quarterback can take the franchise deep into the playoffs and end all those streaks of futility and doubts about his ability. "It means a lot," Dalton said. "I feel like Ive done a lot since being here to earn that trust, to earn that support." Norman, OK - Oklahoma freshman Samaje Perine broke the week-old FBS single-game rushing record to lead the No. Fabian Moreau Jersey . 23 Sooners in a 44-7 rout of Kansas on Saturday. Perine rushed for 427 yards, surpassing the record set last week by Wisconsin junior Melvin Gordon, whose 408 yards against Nebraska in just three quarters broke LaDainian Tomlinsons 15-year-old FBS mark. It took Perine a little longer, but not much. He set the new mark on his last run, a 42-yarder 2 1/2 minutes into the fourth quarter after shaking off a few would-be tacklers near the line. Just sensational, said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. The guy is just so exceptional in everything he does. Stoops said he considered taking Perine out of the game before he set the record. It just got to that point where we were thinking about resting him and then someone said he only needs 38 more yards, Stoops said. Thats too close not to do it and there is still way too much time left in the game. The game was played in the rain after a 90-minute delay because of lightning and most of Perines big runs came with little contact. He carried the ball 34 times and scored five touchdowns on rushes of 66, 49, 34, 33 and 27 yards. Perine gave much of the credit to the offensive line, which opened holes and sealed corners for him all game. Im not really feeling special in any type of way, he said. I just look at it as doing what I have to do under certain conditions to just help my team win. Perine gained 222 of his yards in the first half on just 18 carries. Cody Thomas, starting for the second straight game in place of injured quarterback Trevor Knight, completed just three of his 13 passes for 39 yards but didnt need to do much for the Sooners (8-3, 5-3 Big 12). Safety Cassius Sendish scored on a 63-yard fumble return for the Jayhawks (3-8, 1-7), who have lost 26 consecutive Big 12 road games. Michael Cummings passed for 84 yards and was just 8-of-22 with an interception. Perine broke the Big 12 rushing record of 378 yards set by Iowa States Troy Davis vs. Missouri on Sept. 28, 1996. He broke Greg Pruitts Oklahoma record of 294 yards against Kansas State on Oct. 23, 1971. He now has 1,428 rushing yards this season. Adrian Petersons single-season Sooners record is 1,925 set in 2004. After the lightning delay, Perine flashed around the left side of the line and went untouched on a 49-yard run just 3 1/2 minutes into the game for his first touchdown. They obviously had a good game plan, said Kansas interim coach Clint Bowen. Their offensive line played very physically, came off the ball hard and got movement on us. He is a tough guy to bring down. Michael Hunnicutts 39-yard field goal pushed the Sooners lead to 10-0 later in the first quarter and Perine blew past two tacklers near the line on a 33- yard run that made it 17-0 with 6:05 remaining in the first half. Perine was untouched again on a 34-yard run on Oklahomas next possession, going over 200 yards for the half and giving the Sooners a 24-point lead. Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta will be appealing his 10-game suspension from the NHL. Ryan Anderson Jersey . After conferring with his agent and the NHL Players Association, Kaleta will appeal the decision brought on by his illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Jack Johnson. According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the first appeal will be heard by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and if he upholds the ruling, the new CBA allows for a second appeal to a neutral arbitrator. If the suspension is upheld, Kaleta, a repeat offender, will forfeit $152,439 in salary. The 27-year-old has already served two games of his suspension awaiting an in-person hearing. He was not penalized for his hit and Johnson was not injured on the play. James Harden Jersey . With a win tonight, Buehrle will match Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka for the most wins in the majors with 11. Winger Travis Moen will also miss some time after suffering a concussion in Mondays contest. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Al Jefferson and the Charlotte Bobcats cant help but sneak a peek at the Eastern Conference standings every now and again. "I would be great to get in that sixth spot," Jefferson said. The reasoning if obvious: It would help the Bobcats avoid a potential first-round playoff series with Indiana or Miami. For now, the Bobcats are the seventh seed in the East, but theyre gaining ground. Charlotte took a big step on Wednesday night with Jefferson scoring 35 points and Kemba Walker adding a double-double in a 116-111 overtime victory over the Brooklyn Nets. The win pulled the Bobcats within 1/2 games of sixth-seeded Washington, which lost Wednesday night to Phoenix, and three games behind the fifth-seeded Nets. "I think if we continue to win games everything will take care of itself, everything will work out," Jefferson said. "At this point we should be happy and blessed to be in any (playoff) spot." Walker had 20 points and 12 assists, and Chris Douglas-Roberts added 16 points, including two big jump shots in overtime. Deron Williams finished with 29 points for Brooklyn after scoring 18 in the first quarter. Joe Johnson had 18. Josh McRoberts put the Bobcats ahead for good in overtime when he cut to the basket, received a pass from Jefferson and twisted his body in midair for a reverse dunk in traffic, bringing the crowd to its feet. Douglas-Roberts and Johnson traded 3-pointers before Walker hit a 19-footer over Williams to push the lead to 114-111. Shaun Livingston missed a driving layup with 35 seconds left and the Bobcats got the ball. McRoberts was blocked on the ensuing possession, but Douglas-Roberts tracked down the loose ball and made a 20-footer from the left wing to push the lead to five and seal the victory. "I thought the defence was great, but in the end, we come up with a blocked shot, the ball bounces, and you know CDR, he makes a shot with the shot clock winding down and so everybody executed," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "The ball just bounced their way tonight." Williams tied the game with 26.8 seconds left in regulation when he knocked down a 20-footer from the left wing. The Bobcats had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but the ball slipped out of Walkers hands as time expired. Clint Capela Jersey. Douglas-Roberts joined the Bobcats in December from the NBA Developmental League and has been a reliable contributor during the teams playoff push. He saw extra minutes off the bench with Gary Neal out with an ankle injury. "Im very confident when Im on the floor and I go in there knowing I have to contribute for this team," Douglas-Roberts said. Williams set a career-high with 57 points in this same building against the Bobcats on March 4, 2012. And early on he looked like he was aiming to better the mark. Despite missing the morning shootaround with an illness, he made seven of his first eight shots, including four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points in the first quarter. The Bobcats, who have surrendered 62 points to Carmelo Anthony and 61 points to LeBron James this season, seemed intent not to allow that to happen again. They shaded their coverage to Williams in the second quarter and he was limited to only two more points before halftime. In the meantime, Jefferson was starting to heat up, scoring 22 points in the first half on 9-of-14 shooting, using a variety of low-post moves and jump hooks. "We gave him some easy ones early," Brooklyns Mason Plumlee said. "... You cant give a great scorer easy buckets early." Brooklyns Jorge Gutierrez was ejected from the game with 6:42 left in the fourth quarter after a flagrant two foul against Cody Zeller. Zeller grabbed an offensive rebound and Gutierrez came down hard with both hands on Zellers shoulders, sending the 7-footer crashing to the hardwood. "I watched the replay and it looked pretty bad -- but that wasnt my intention to do that," Gutierrez said. "Coach always says Nothing easy. Make them earn it on the free throw line. I was just trying to do a hard play." NOTES: The Bobcats are 12-7 since the All-Star break. ... Grammy Award winner Nelly took in the game from a courtside seat. ... The Bobcats and Wells Fargo gave away a new home to former Marine Josh Morgan during the first half of the game as part of the Military Warriors Support Foundation. Morgan was injured in Afghanistan.
