The Hamilton Tiger-Cats made a surprise signing Tuesday, coming to terms with defensive tackle Torrey Davis on a new contract. Davis was expected to move on from the Ticats after not re-signing with the team prior to free agency, but decided to stick around nearly a month after the free agent market opened. Davis registered 16 tackles and a sack in 13 games with Hamilton last season. The 25-year-old Jacksonville State product has 52 tackles and three sacks in three CFL seasons spent with the Ticats and Calgary Stampeders. cheap jerseys from china . -- Packers tight end Jermichael Finley is done for the season after the team placed him on injured reserve. cheap nfl jerseys . 9 Oregons 43-15 victory over California. The Twins announced almost seven hours before the scheduled start time Monday that theyll play the Marlins instead on Tuesday night as the second half of a split doubleheader. The two teams already were slated to play on Tuesday afternoon. This is only a two-game series. To give workers more time to prepare the ballpark, the Twins also pushed the first game back an hour to 1:10 p.m. local time. The second game will be at 7:10 p.m. Mondays game was called while the temperature was 45 degrees, before any rain had even fallen. But the forecast was calling for a wet night, turning to heavy snow thats supposed to taper by Tuesday morning after an estimated accumulation of three to six inches in the Twin Cities area. The expected high for Tuesday was 42 degrees. Four of Minnesotas last eight scheduled games have been wiped out before they began because of weather problems, including three at home. That matched their previous season high for postponements at Target Field, in 2011. The Twins had only one washout in 2012 and one in 2010, plus a game that was suspended in that inaugural year for the limestone-and-glass ballpark. The Twins moved out of the climate-controlled Metrodome after the 2009 season. The covered stadium sits only a couple of miles away, but in the reconfiguration process for football after the Twins left all the dirt was removed from the base paths. So the diamond is no longer up to major league standard. Via Twitter, Twins President Dave St. Peter acknowledged the urging by some people for rescheduling of these games indoors. He joked in his tweet that "if this many fans had actually attended games" at the Dome, the Twins wouldve led MLB in attendance. In a phone interview later, St. Peter said the Twins "would never say never" to a temporary shift if the weather or other circumstance was dire enough. Such a change, however, remains unrealistic. "Needless to say, our organization, and certainly our season-ticket holders and our sponsors, doesnt have much interest in moving down to the Metrodome on a short-term basis for a game or two," St. Peter said. The weather has been a bother throughout baseball this month, not only in Minnesota. According to STATS research, this was the 144th postponement of the season.dddddddddddd. Through the first 23 days, there were six postponements in 2012, 15 in 2011 and just two in 2010. This year, there have been 14 games played with a first-pitch temperature below 40 degrees. "Its been frustrating, needless to say," St. Peter said. "Everything pointed to a really ugly night, one that playing baseball on wasnt really an option, due to the rain, due to the snow, due to the wind, due to the old. It just doesnt make much sense." St. Peter said, if the weather prevents the doubleheader from being completed, that Wednesday is a possibility for another makeup slot. That would require approval from the players from both teams and the MLB Players Association, because of the limit on how many consecutive days teams can play. Thanks in part to all the wintry weather plus one scheduled off day last week, the Twins havent lost in nine days since April 13. Their winning streak is at four games in a row, good enough to propel them into second place in the AL Central division. They were planning to send right-hander Kevin Correia to the mound on Monday, and he was moved to Tuesday afternoon. Right-hander Mike Pelfrey, scheduled to pitch the matinee, was pushed back to the night game, the Twins announced. The Marlins, at least, didnt lose again. Miami (4-15) has the fewest wins and the worst record in the majors, a low not unexpected after the off-season sell-off that sent away most of the teams best players to save money and start over with a young team and new manager Mike Redmond. According to STATS research, this is their worst mark in Marlins history after 19 games. They were 5-14 in 1995, 1998 and 1999. The Marlins are batting .212 with six home runs and 43 runs scored, all by far the fewest totals in the majors. Giancarlo Stanton, the only star who wasnt traded, is hitting .188 with one run batted in. Right-hander Ricky Nolasco, the scheduled starter for Monday, was bumped to the Tuesday afternoon game. Right-hander Jose Hernandez, slated to take the mound for the matinee, was slotted for the Tuesday night game instead, the Marlins announced. Redmond was forced to wait for his reunion with the Twins, for whom he was a popular backup catcher from 2005-09. The Marlins also have a pair of former Twins pitchers, Jon Rauch and Kevin Slowey. DAVIE, Fla. -- New Miami Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey stepped to the microphone and apologized for his hoarse voice, explaining he wore it down in recent days trying to build a winner. Hickey then introduced a succession of big acquisitions in the first 24 hours of free agency -- 316-pound left tackle Branden Albert, 300-pound defensive tackle Earl Mitchell and 305-pound defensive tackle Randy Starks. All signed Wednesday. Starks remained with the Dolphins after a brief stint as a free agent, signing a $12 million, two-year contract. He spent the past six seasons with the Dolphins, with only one playoff game during that time. "The moves we made so far just show were close to doing something special here, and trying to bring in some people to help us get over the hump," he said. The return of Starks, a two-time Pro Bowl player, and the addition of Mitchell compensate for the loss of defensive tackle Paul Soliai, who joined the Atlanta Falcons after seven years with Miami. "Pauls a good player," Starks said. "He has been here a long time. Hell be well missed, but we have people who can step up." Hickeys shopping will continue, with additional offensive linemen, a tight end and a linebacker the most pressing needs. The Dolphins are trying to end a 13-year drought without a post-season victory, and theyre eager to put in the past their bullying scandal that involved tackle Jonathan Martin. The acquisition of Albert was a step in that direction. Hell take over the position manned at the start of last season by Martin, who was traded late Tuesday to the San Francisco 49ers for an undisclosed draft choice. "Im going to be here to play left tackle and make a difference," Albert said. "Thats the reason Im here. I feel like its a team I can help the most and make my legacy even better." Albert signed a $47 million, five-year deal that includes $26 million guaranteed. Dolphins officials, accompanied by a couple of players, treated Albert to dinner Tuesday night to celebrate the agreement. "Probably the happiest person at the dining room table was Ryan Tannehill," Hickey said. "He was really excited to have a player of his calibre on our team." Albert will protect the blind side for Tannehill, who was sacked a franchise-record 58 times last year. Mitchell was also part of the dinner celebration after agreeing to a $16 million, four-year deal. Like Albert and Starks, Mitchell envisions better days ahead for the Dolphins. "Im coming to produce and definitely trying to help this team reach new heights," Mitchell said. "Thats my reason for being here. Im trying to get us to a Super Bowl." Mitchell blossomed in his fourth NFL season with the Houston Texans last year, when he became a starter and won raves for the way he clogged the middle. He has been playing defence only since his junior year at the University of Arizona, and he and Hickey both said hes still improving. Alberts reputation has also been on the rise, and he made the Pro Bowl last year with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has had a home the past three offseasons 45 minutes from the Dolphins complex and will now move north, eager to go to work with his new team. "I live in downtown Miami, but I probably wont anymore because of the commute," he said with a smile. "Ive got to find a place close to the facility." wholesale jerseys . Bayern led second-place Leverkusen by 10 points with a game in hand, while Dortmund was another four points off the pace. Freiburg midfielder Felix Klaus scored in the last minute as his side twice came from behind to climb provisionally out of the relegation zone. "We still have an incredibly long way to go," Freiburg coach Christian Streich said. Lars Bender scored with Leverkusens first shot in the fourth minute and Admir Mehmedi equalized with a fine strike in the 27th before Simon Rolfes restored the visitors lead eight minutes later. Jonathan Schmids free kick squeezed inside the near post in the 53rd, thanks to a light deflection from Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling on his 30th birthday, and Klaus scored the winning goal on a counterattack. "Freiburg were dangerous," Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia said. "We tried to win, then came the counter." Dortmund endured an afternoon to forget as the sides bad luck with injuries continued. Poland midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski sustained suspected cruciate ligament damage to his right knee in the third minute. "The opening period was overshadowed by Blaszczykowskis injury," said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp, who has also had to contend with long-standing injuries to Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels, Lukasz Piszczek and Neven Subotic. Sven Bender headed home side Dortmund in front in the fifth -- one minute after his twin opened the scoring for Leverkusen -- but conceded an own goal in the 56th, when he deflected Andre Hahns cross into his own net. Nuri Sahin restored Dortmunds lead from a free kick in the 66th, only for South Korea midfielder Ji Dong-won, who will join Dortmund next season, to score Augsburgs equalizer in the 72nd just two minutes after going on as a substitute. "You could see wed set our sights high," Klopp saaid.dddddddddddd "But you could also see that that can lead to tension." Elsewhere, Nuremberg defeated Hoffenheim 4-0 for its first win of the season, Hannover won 3-1 at Wolfsburg for its first away win, and Mainz earned a 2-1 win at Stuttgart. Alexander Meiers 36th-minute strike against the run of play was enough for Eintracht Frankfurt to defeat Hertha Berlin 1-0 in the late game. The visitors might have had a penalty with some 20 minutes remaining, when Carlos Zambrano appeared to catch Ronny in the face with his elbow. The referee didnt see it, however, and booked the Hertha midfielder for protesting. Nuremberg coach Gertjan Verbeek had vowed not to shave until his side finally won in the league. "Im very happy with the win, also that the beard is shaved," the Dutchman said. "It was important for us to take the lead." United States international Timmy Chandler opened the scoring with a deflected shot in the 24th, before two goals from Josip Drmic and another from Daniel Ginczek gave Nuremberg its first Bundesliga victory at the 18th attempt this season. Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne made his debut for Wolfsburg following his switch from Chelsea for a reported 22 million euros ($30 million). Artjoms Rudnevs scored on his Hannover debut in the 28th, and Leonardo Bittencourt added two more in the 50th and 72nd for Hannovers first away win of the season in Tayfun Korkuts first game in charge. Ivica Olic had pulled Wolfsburg level in the 35th. Korkuts predecessor, Mirko Slomka, who was fired during the winter break, watched from the stands. In Stuttgart, Mohammed Abdellaoues 11th-minute opener for the home side was cancelled when Shinji Okazaki seized on a mistake from Japan teammate Hiroki Sakai to score against his former side in the 39th. Mainz substitute Benedikt Saller snatched the winning goal in the 87th. "The bottom line is that its a lucky win," Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel said. "But its one of our qualities, to wait, to lurk." This wasnt supposed to happen. Ahead of the light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, the UFC tried selling fans on the idea about this potentially being a competitive matchup. Pundits and even the odds-makers would tell a different story, some betting sites capped Jones at one point at -850 (Bet $850 to win $100). But clearly thats not what ensued on Saturday night. From the moment the bell rang, the 26-year old Swede turned the fight into Jones most competitive matchup to date. Using his reach, effective striking and take downs, the Alliance MMA fighter displayed fearless confidence and won over the audience in the Air Canada Centre after five rounds of action. While his performance didnt earn him the victory on the judges scorecards (losing 47-48, 47-48, 46-49), it did immediately spark up debate as to whom Jones next opponent should be. "Who doesnt want to see this rematch?" said UFC President Dana White at the post-fight press conference. "Id like to do the rematch it makes sense, but we have to wait to see what happens -- maybe it is Glover (Teixeira), maybe it is a rematch, I dont know." In my opinion the answer is simple. Book the rematch between Jones and Gustafsson sometime next year and have that event held in Europe. The aftermath of Saturdays main event was a potential fight of year candidate and a winning lottery ticket at the promotions disposal. In order to cash that ticket, they need to carry this momentum over into Jones next fight. Pundits will argue that Glover Teixeira is a more real candidate as hes currently undefeated inside the octagon and most recently dispatched fellow top contender Ryan Bader via first round stoppage earlier this month. The problem with that is who does Gustafsson square off with next? Phil Davis has won three straight, but theyre now fellow teammates and already fought back at UFC 112. Lyoto Machida has dropped to middleweight, Dan Henderson is fighting Vitor Belfort, Thiago Silva and Matt Hamill have both fought Gustafsson recently. Its possible the winner of Rashad Evans vs. Chael Sonnen could be next in line, but are they deserving being 1-2 in their last three fights? I dont think so. While no doubt the 33-year old Teixeira has earned his spot, a matchup with Jones right now would kill any potential of Gustafsson emerging as a European superstar for the promotion. Not since the days when Andrei Arlovski held the UFC heavyweight title back in 2005 has the promotion had a European champion. One of the challenges for the UFC in recent years has been marketing European fighters and after Saturday night, they certainly have an ideal candidate. Hosting a main event fight in Europe against Jon Jones would do big things for the UFC on a global scale and lets hope they make the right decision. wholesale nfl jerseys . While the Canadiens have got off a to very respectable 5-3 start on the season, the next few weeks might prove to be their biggest challenge. Due to the fact the Habs training staff has been the busiest members of the club to start the year, the injury ward is a full house, and now its time for the kids to play a bigger role. The Canadiens started the season without Alexei Emelin, lost Douglas Murray and Davis Drewiske for extended periods during training camp, George Parros saw just over four minutes opening night, Max Pacioretty missed the second game of the year, returned and then suffered the hamstring injury in Winnipeg, Daniel Briere left with a concussion and Brandon Prust hurt his shoulder against Nashville.? Many of the injuries have been under unusual circumstances as well, which makes it all the more frustrating. Yet, the Canadiens have managed to battle on, thanks to some stellar goaltending from Carey Price and the youth movement emerging into bigger roles. Price has been the backbone of the teams success early this year, and is making a very strong case to be Team Canadas starter in Sochi. He has stopped 139 of the last 145 shots he has faced over four games with a save percentage of .959% including a shutout against the Jets. He has tweaked his game working with Stephane Waite, and now finds himself playing a more compact style. Hes consistently square to the shooter, swallowing up rebounds, and has stood up on high shots, swatting them away with his arm. Its clear that Price is on the top of his game and seems to be getting stronger as the games wear on. P.K. Subban leads all NHL defenseman in points, and is continuing to build on his Norris Trophy season from last year, also making it tough for Team Canada to ignore his play. His ice time has been increasing on special teams as well, which is a work in progress for the coaching staff. He is the NHL leader in power play ice time, averaging over five minutes a game. Lars Eller leads the Habs in goals and is scoring on 25% of the shots he takes.? He has shown great chemistry with Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher on his wings, as that line has been the most dangerous every night. Now with all the injuries, they will be relied on even more to carry the load. All part of the youth movement needing to play a bigger role. One player that is slowly gaining the confidence of Michel Therrien and in turn is getting more responsibility is Michael Bournival. He scored his first NHL goal at home this week against Columbus.? So far, the 21 year old has averaged 8:39 in time on ice, but has been around the 10 minute mark the last 3 games and has fired 11 shots on goal. His speed has been an asset, and it looks as though hell be promoted against the Oilers on a line with Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta. Patrick Holland is also set to make his NHL debut as he was recalled from Hamilton along with Michael Blunden to help fill the vacant forward spots.? Holland was acquired along with Rene Bourque as part of the trade with Calgary involving Michael Cammalleri in January 2012. The veteran forward line of Rene Bourque, David Desharnais and Travis Moen will also be expected to elevate their offensive output. The three have combined for just two goals and six points total in the opening eight games, with Bourque covering both goals and half the points. It wont an easy week either, with the Oilers visiting Montreal on Tuesday, looking to avenge a 4-1 loss in Edmonton. On Thursday, Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu make their only visit to the Bell Centre this year with the Ducks, followed by the Sharks on Saturday night. The next few weeks for the Canadiens might provide a big test to see how much the youth of the team is ready to carry the load on their own. Ronde Barber Buccaneers Jersey . Rookie Shane Horton starts at middle linebacker for all-star Robert McCune, who will miss the game with a shoulder injury. Horton was a safety at USC and has played both outside linebacker and rush end for Toronto this year. He took at least 90 per cent of the snaps at MLB during practices this week. Another rookie will start at the boundary halfback position. Neiko Thorpe, a member of the 2010 NCAA champion Auburn Tigers, played well replacing Pat Watkins at cornerback when the two teams played last month in Guelph. Hes a big DB at 62". Hell line up next to the 65" Watkins. Both Romby Bryant and Jason Barnes are listed as backup receivers. Head coach Scott Milanovich said earlier in the week that he didnt plan to dress five import receivers. With Chad Owens, John Chiles and Dontrelle Inman listed as starters, one can assume that either Bryant or Barnes is out. Barnes did take more reps with the first team this week than Bryant did. Kicker Swayze Waters had a very good week at practice. The yard lines were not drawn on the field during Fridays workout, but Waters hit what appeared to be a 60-yard field goal at the end of a special teams session and was mobbed by his teammates. While punting from sideline to sideline with Noel Prefontaine during practice, Waters kicked one from one sideline, across the field, over the head of some media members and over the players bench. It went roughly 75-80 yards in the air. Jerious Norwood gets the start at running back for the injured Chad Kackert. Norwood is coming off a game against Montreal where he carried the ball eight times for 102 yards and caught four passes for 62 more. A kick return specialist in the NFL, Norwood said his fastest time in the 40-yard dash was 4.33 seconds. Aaron Maybin gets the nod at DE. His only start of the season came in the season finale against Montreal. The most obvious thing about Maybin is how quickly he gets off the ball. The Argos have not had a great pass rush this season and Maybins presence may help. Ticket demand was such that an additional block of upper-deck seats was made available Saturday afternoon.ddddddddddddThe latest estimate is that around 40,000 will be in attendance. Glen Johnson will be the referee for the game. TSN.ca asked some of this years East Division All-Stars which players they thought had a chance to be the star on Sunday. Chad Owens: "Ricky Ray. Hes been our most consistent player, hes probably been the most consistent player in the whole league and hes poised for these moments. I think hes going to continue to be Ricky Ray and help us win." Khalif Mitchell: "Neiko Thorpe. Hes been more sound in the stuff that hes been doing as far as film and knowing his assignments. Hes the first one talking whenever a coach is asking about whats going on (in practice) or whats supposed to happen in a situation. Hes the first one to be vocal about it and that shows his confidence and that hes been studying off the field." Pat Watkins: "Mr. Ricky Ray. I mean, thats a sure bet. Born a star, been a star. Continuing to grow, a leader. Hes the man to get this while team going. If he plays well, well rally behind him." Chris Van Zeyl: "Khalif Mitchell. Hes dominant. When you watch him on film, theres not an offensive line, when he puts his mind to it, that can stop him. Ive watched him all year terrorize the guys on our team and whether he wins or loses, he leaves his mark every play. Hes a fiery guy, he brings emotion to the game and the defence feeds off him". Jeff Keeping: "Andre Durie. Hes been great this year and has been one of our best players. He works hard all the time, does everything the coaches ask him to do, and that exemplifies what this team is all about." Ricky Ray was asked three different times in three different ways and still wouldnt talk about one specific player. When teased afterward that he was incredibly boring, he laughed and said "I know". Scott Milanovich acknowledged that he had a gut feeling that one of his stars would step up. When asked which one, he chuckled and said "Ill tell you after the game". Mike Hogan is the play by play voice of the Argos on TSN 1050 radio in Toronto. The pre-game show for Sundays game is Noon et, with a 1pm kickoff. You can listen online at TSN1050.ca. ' ' '

CHICAGO -- Derrick Rose isnt wavering. He still sees himself as a star, a cornerstone player, despite another major knee injury that brought his long-awaited return to a screeching halt. So he wasnt quite sure what to make of the idea. Is it time for the Chicago Bulls to move on, to abandon the idea of building around him, given his injuries? "What can I say to that?" Rose said. Then, after a long pause, he added, "You could be a fool if you want to. Dead serious. I know Im going to be all right." In fact, hes not quite ruling out a return this season. The superstar point guard left the door slightly open for a comeback in the playoffs if his surgically repaired right knee is healed -- even though the team has said he will miss the rest of the year. Rose tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in a game at Portland on Nov. 22. He had surgery in Chicago three days later, cutting short his comeback after he sat out last season recuperating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. "If Im healthy and the situation is right, I will be back playing," Rose said Thursday when asked if he might return for the playoffs. "If Im healthy and my meniscus is fully healed, of course Ill be out there playing. But if its something totally different and the outcome is not how I would want it to be, theres no need." That comment aside, the odds of a comeback this season appear to be just about nil given that the team has ruled him out. "Right now, its been determined that hes out for the season," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "So thats the way were going to approach. If something changes later on, well adjust then." The bigger issue remains how effective Rose will be whenever he makes his next return. The MVP in 2011, he tore the ACL in his left knee in the playoff opener against Philadelphia the following year, sending top-seeded Chicago to a first-round exit. The Bulls relived their nightmare last month in Portland when Rose lost his footing while turning to get back on defence. Rose limped across the court, unable to put any weight on his knee, a huge blow for a team that thought it would challenge Miami in the Eastern Conference. Rose is in an all-too-familiar spot, trying to recuperate. He has played in just 50 NBA games -- 49 in the regular season and that lone playoff game -- since the Bulls run to the conference finals during his MVP season, but he felt as if he was returning to form just as he went down again. Rose was averaging 15.9 points and was shooting just over 35 per cent. But he looked a little better in his final two games with 19 points in a loss at Denver and 20 against Portland. "I was catching a rhythm of how I used to play," he said. "I think I was getting in condition more than anything for this season. For this one to happen, just from me turning and running back down the court, theres nothing I can say about it, nothing I can do about it, but just take it, be strong." Rose wondered how it could happen to him again after everything he went through. But he was also relieved he didnt suffer an ACL tear. Even so, he knew the injury was serious when he was being examined in Portland. He said his leg was "catching on the meniscus side, on the inside." "I started thinking about, Why me? and all that stuff the day after the surgery," Rose said. He said meniscus tear was a "freak accident." "(The doctors) look at the tape, look at the film," Rose said. "The first one (the ACL tear) could have been I put too much pressure or I put too much weight on that leg at that time. This one ... I didnt buckle me knee or anything. I paused for a second. I was able to still run a few steps before I couldnt walk. It just happened." Now, hes going for therapy every day. Hes incorporating yoga and swimming into his rehab routine and is able to put pressure on his leg. He said he might try to land a spot on the U.S. world championship team next summer if hes ready, but he still wont be playing in any pickup games. He also said hes not about to start recruiting players to Chicago -- something he hasnt done in the past -- even though the Bulls core could have a different look. Luol Deng has an expiring contract and Carlos Boozer is a candidate to be amnestied. But Rose said he hasnt thought about possible changes. "Theres a chance I could come back so Im just cheering them on," he said. For now, the Bulls are in a difficult spot. They were third in the Central division at 7-9 entering Thursdays game against Miami, one that looked like a marquee matchup when the schedule came out. Since then, it has lost that shine. Rose insisted hes not finished. "I believe that Im a special player. I think people love the way that I just play. I dont try to impress anyone while Im playing or anything. Ive just got a feel for the game. I know my story is far from done." http://www.shopjerseyslions.com/Womens-Larry-Webster-III-Authentic-Jersey/ . "I have to call my agent because Im done with my modeling career," Jefferson said. Jefferson had seven stitches in the first half to repair a gash above his right eye, but returned to finish with 19 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Bobcats overcome an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and defeat Washington 100-94 Monday night. The win prevented the Wizards from clinching their first playoff berth since 2008. Jeffersons put back off an offensive rebound with 3:30 left in the game helped the Bobcats take the lead for good at 93-92. Kemba Walker had a big second half, finishing with 21 points and 10 assists, and rookie Cody Zeller scored a career-high 15 points on 4-of-4 shooting and added eight rebounds for Charlotte. Walker scored nine points in the final quarter and the Bobcats erased a 16-point halftime deficit and pulled within two games of the Washington in the race for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs Both teams have eight games left and will meet again on April 9. "We made big shots and played well defensively in the second half and really came together as a team," Walker said. "It shows our resiliency. That was a big win for us." Bradley Beal had 20 points for the Wizards, who missed 11 of their last 14 shots from the field. "It (stinks) man," Washingtons Al Harrington said of not clinching a playoff spot. "Because obviously we played a great first half. We really thought tonight was our night, but to have them come out and play the way that they played and beat us -- thats tough." Washington still would have clinched a playoff spot if the Utah Jazz had defeated New York later Monday, but the Knicks won 92-83. The Wizards (38-36) came in looking to snap the third-longest playoff drought in the NBA -- and for a while it looked like they would. The Wizards shot 59 per cent in the first half, at one point hitting 10 straight shots from the field and scoring on 14 of 15 possessions to close the first half on a 30-7 run. The Bobcats could do little right in what Jefferson called an "embarrassing" first half. But he was confident they would battle back.dddddddddddd. Jefferson walked to the scorers table at the start of the third quarter and told whoever was in earshot, "Hey, watch this comeback." "Everyone looked at me like I was crazy," Jefferson said. "At the end of the game though people were pointing at me saying, You said it. You said it." Charlottes defence was the big difference. Coach Steve Clifford also went to a pick-and-roll with Walker and Jefferson. "The Wizards did a good job of taking away the post," Clifford said. The momentum turned four minutes into the fourth quarter when Walker came up with the loose ball off a Washington turnover and fed Chris Douglas-Roberts for a fast-break layup in traffic with 7:38 left in the game. Douglas-Roberts had to adjust in midair to get his body from one side of the rim to the other to avoid defenders and get the shot to drop. Douglas-Roberts made a 3-point play and then knocked down a long-distance 3 to cut the lead to one before Jeffersons put back gave the Bobcats the lead for good. Jefferson hit a 16-footer to push the lead to three. Walker followed with a backbreaker when he scored on a driving layup to make it 97-92 after a Bobcats possession that took more than a minute off the clock. Charlotte twice came up with key offensive rebounds, allowing Walker to bring the ball back out and reset the offence and milk time off the clock. "When you give a team two to three looks one time down the floor, theyre going to make one," said Wizards forward Drew Gooden. "I would say we lost the game giving them second and third possessions offensively." Jefferson left the game briefly at the end of the first quarter to head to the locker room to get the stitches above his right eye after taking an inadvertent elbow from Trevor Booker. "I had to get a shot to numb it and I hate needles," Jefferson said. NOTES: Gary Neal returned to action for the Bobcats after missing two games with an ankle injury. He had nine points ... The Bobcats have won four of six against Washington, but have split their two games this season. ... The Bobcats have won 11 of their last 13 at home. ' ' '

RALEIGH, N.C. - Standing in near isolation in the visitors dressing room of the RBC Center, Keith Aulie simmered with frustration. Only moments prior did he and the Leafs completely melt down, blowing a two-goal third period lead before falling to Eric Staal (two goals) and the Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime on Thursday night. "Just a couple miscues and thats how fast things can change," Aulie told the Leaf Report, following the game. "3-1 lead, we should keep playing, do the little things, be in the right position. They got a couple breaks tonight and it came back to haunt us." "At least we got a point," Ron Wilson noted, somewhat sourly, "but Im not happy. Im disappointed in the way once we got the lead that our mental approach wasnt right. "We should know how to defend a lead. I know we know how to defend the lead and yet we didnt." The loss was the second straight for the Leafs, who wrap up a three-game road trip in Winnipeg on Saturday. Five Points 1. The meltdown began only 40 seconds after Joffrey Lupul made it 3-1 with his 17th goal of the year. Aulie and partner Dion Phaneuf were on the ice in both instances. "Its just unfortunate plays," Aulie said. "First one gets chipped out [of the offensive zone] and Eric Staal – hes a quick guy so hes flying – kind of got a jump on us. He goes down on a breakaway [and] hes not going to miss very many of those. At that point its 3-2 and we should just keep playing. Its a 3-2 game in the third period, we should be comfortable, we should be just ready to finish out the game. And then [on the game-tying goal] the puck gets in the blue paint and then scrambling around and they end up whacking it home. Two unfortunate goals, but weve just got to look forward now." Phaneufs failure to spot Staal breaking free – with Aulie looking to hold a puck in at the offensive blueline – brought the Hurricanes to within one (Wilson conceded in hindsight that a timeout shouldve been called). A turnover in the defensive zone and subsequent inability to clear the front of the net (Phaneuf was beaten by Brandon Sutter initially) led to Zac Dalpe tying the game at three on a rebound. "Its not just Dion and I out there," Aulie noted. "Its five guys. Battle in the paint is six guys, its the goalie too." 2. Reimer was beaten in OT by Staals second of the game with the Hurricanes minding a 4-on-3 powerplay advantage. "The overtime, you get stuck in a four-on-three, youre looking at trying to kill off two minutes there and thats personally I think a puck you have to stop," Wilson said. The puck went between the glove and body of the struggling Reimer. "I think thats a puck I want to stop, at least most of the time," he said. The 23-year-old dropped to 1-3-1 in seven starts on the road with a 4.18 goals against average and .858 save percentage. 3. Empty in seven opportunities on the powerplay the Leafs were clearly missing John-Michael Liles on Thursday night, notably the first unit which consists currently of Phaneuf, Lupul, Phil Kessel, Tyler Bozak and Carl Gunnarsson. "Were really missing him," Wilson concurred. "Whoevers gone out on the second unit – if you want to call it that – have done a really good job and have had a lot of scoring chances." The second unit – Nazem Kadri, Tim Connolly (and/or Mikhail Grabovski), Clarke MacArthur, Jake Gardiner and Cody Franson – have accounted for the last three powerplay goals. Over the last 10 games, the powerplay is just 4-33 (12 percent). 4. Kessel, Lupul and Bozak had another uninspiring night in the defensive zone, on the ice for two more goals against, the Hurricanes first and third goals. "They didnt have a very good game tonight," Wilson said. "Lot of turnovers in our zone. We need them to play better, its as simple as that." 5. Wilson called the fourth line his best versus Carolina, specifically praising the efforts of Darryl Boyce, who chipped in with an assist on Nikolai Kulemins fourth of the season. "Darryl was always kind of an irritant," he said. "He was going to the net hard and drawing a lot of attention and made a great play on Kulies goal in sort of reaching for the puck and good second effort to get it on the net." Bonus Points Kadri scored his third goal in four games since being recalled. "I think Im playing well out there, but at the end of the day it all comes down to the win category," he said...The Leaf penalty kill was a perfect 3-3 in regulation before surrendering the winner in OT. Theyve now allowed a goal in 10 of the last 11 games…With a point each, Kessel and Lupul have still yet to go consecutive games without hitting the scoresheet this season…Connolly has just five points in the last 13 games (three goals, two assists). cheap jerseys from china . And Toronto will be going up against righty Jake Peavy, who this season has resembled the pitcher who was an NL Cy Young Award winner for San Diego in 2007.SAN JOSE, Calif. -- When the shootout dragged on into the eighth round, San Jose coach Todd McLellan was running out of good options. Joe Thornton made the most of a rare opportunity. Thornton scored his first shootout goal since 2007 and the Sharks beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 Wednesday night to extend the home-team dominance in this California rivalry. "Coach doesnt tend to look my way in a shootout, but it was nice to be involved in one," Thornton said. Thornton hadnt been used in a shootout since McLellan sent him out in the seventh round of an 11-round tiebreaker on Dec. 11, 2009, against Dallas. He hadnt scored in one since two years before that on Dec. 16, 2007, against Anaheim. But McLellan saw that his players had success trying to deke Ben Scrivens as opposed to shooting the puck past him, so he gave Thornton a chance. He skated in and stuffed a backhand past Scrivens for what proved to be the game-winner. "Obviously Jumbos not a big shooter, but he can move his hands pretty well, and he ends up coming up with the win," McLellan said. Antti Niemi then stopped Tyler Toffoli to seal it. Niemi made 38 saves as San Jose opened a difficult stretch of three games in four days against top-five teams. Thornton and Joe Pavelski scored in regulation for the Sharks, who have won nine straight at home against the Kings including the post-season. In all, the home team has won the last 14 matchups, including all seven in last springs playoff series won by Los Angeles. "Its kind of the same way theyve beaten us in their rink -- by one goal, comeback, or however it works out," Pavelski said. "We know we can play with them. We had our chances to win there. They are probably saying the same thing here. Weve got to find ways to win in their building as well, but this was a good win for us tonight." Jeff Carter and Drew Doughty scored for the Kings, who tied a franchise record by earning a point in their 11th straight game. They also did that in 1973-74 and 2010-11. Scrivens made 38 saves. "It was fun, though we came out at the wrong end of it," Scrivens said. "They have some skill guys. Its a learning experience." The game was played with the high intensity expected from ttwo fierce rivals with a recent playoff history who are at the top of their games.dddddddddddd These teams have met twice in the past three postseasons, with each winning once, including Los Angeles triumph in the second round last spring. Each benefited from a fluky goal, with San Jose taking a 2-1 lead late in the second period when Thornton took the puck from Willie Mitchell behind the net and then Scrivens kicked in a loose puck. The Kings got the fortunate bounce early in the third to tie the game when Doughtys centring pass hit defenceman Scott Hannans skate and deflected past Niemi for the equalizer. Los Angeles then killed off three successive minor penalties in a span of less than 7 minutes to preserve the tie and set the stage for shootout. "It was pretty intense," Kings centre Anze Kopitar said. "We got off to a good start and I thought we played well in the second period and were down, 2-1. We got it back and went deep into the shootout." The Kings jumped on top early when Dwight King knocked down Tomas Hertl on the opening shift and played a pass off the end boards to Carter, who banged it past Niemi just 18 seconds into the game. Niemi prevented Los Angeles from adding to that lead when he stopped Mike Richards backhand attempt on a 2-on-0 break after Richards stole the puck from Dan Boyle. The Sharks then dominated the second half of the period, but Scrivens stopped all 18 shots in the first to preserve a 1-0 lead. Pavelski tied it early in the second when he got to a loose puck in the slot and lifted it over Scrivens for his ninth of the season. Los Angeles failed to capitalize on a 4-minute power play when Boyle was called for high-sticking Justin Williams. Despite near constant pressure, Niemi stopped all six shots during the double minor to the delight of a sellout crowd that chanted "Beat L.A.! Beat L.A.!" throughout the night. Toronto FCs worst ever start to a season now stands at six straight defeats after Saturdays 3-2 loss to Chicago Fire and has Tom Anselmi, the Chief Operating Officer of team owners MLSE, saying "they have to get this straightened out." Presumably Anselmi was referring to Head Coach Aron Winter in his brief statement on the clubs problems Sunday, which would indicate hes not thinking about a change in management just yet. But "straightening things out" is not a quick fix, and its unclear how long Anselmi will be able to stand by his man while results continue to fall well below expectations. A coaching change is one option as the club looks to snap out of its slump. Its a situation that seemed highly unlikely just six weeks ago when Toronto appeared in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League after a surprise win over LA Galaxy in the quarters. When Torontos new management team was appointed in January 2011, Winter spoke of having a three-year plan. One year to sort out the issues he inherited before making the Playoffs in year two and challenging for the MLS Cup in year three. Patience and stability were two of the key words used then, and if the club is to maintain that belief, then that also has to be the mantra for the organization now. But this isnt an ideal world. With each defeat the stands get emptier and the Playoff chances look even more distant. Winter talked on Saturday about needing time to get things right and said progress has been made since a year ago even though results dont show it. However, the numbers dont make pretty reading. Aside from the fact that the club has lost six straight with four of those games against clubs that didnt make the MLS Playoffs last year, their defensive record has been shocking. The club conceded a league record 59 goals last year and has already let in 13 through their opening six matches. At this pace, theyre on track to set a new record this time around. In three of their six matches, the Reds have conceded three goals. When questioned in the post-match press conference about the defence, Winter defended his decision to play a back three and pointed to individual mistakes as the reason for the latest defeat. He was highly critical of the quality available to him and stated simply "defensively we need better players." Of course, hes not wrong - but that was exactly the same problem that the club had last year. I said heading into the season that I believed they are one quality defender away from challenging for the playoffs. Im certainly not the only person to voice that, but as long as the situation goes unaddressed, the team will likely continue to fall short. Winter believed he had solved the defensive issue with the arrivals of Geovanny Caicedo and Miguel Aceval. Caicedo didnt even make the start of the season, and Aceval hasnt shown he can be the answer, so Toronto FC finds itself with familiar problems. If the MLSE board decides Winter should be given the time to try and turn the situation around, he must bolster the defence, even if it means losing a key piece from elsewhere in the team. As the Technical Director and Head Coach, Winter is responsible for assembling a team that can compete and so far he has been unable to find the answer at the back. It has been a learning process for the Dutchman. It was always going to be that way as he embarked on his first head coaching job in a completely new league, and the teams owners knew that would be the case when he was appointed. Its not easy dealing with a salary cap, and injuries to key players, but there have already been wholesale changes to personnel without the required improvement in defence. 26 players were signed in 2011 including defenders Dicoy Williams, Eddy Viator, Andy Iro, Kyle Davies, Danleigh Borman, Mikael Yourassowsky and Dasan Robinson. Further additions came this season with Aceval and Caicedo signed along with squad players such as Logan Emory and Aaron Maund. Six games into the 2012 season, its clear Toronto FCs squad isnt good enough to play the way Aron Winter wants. Whether they would look better in a 4-4-2 is another debate, but I do think that is an option that could be explored in a bid to change things around. With a front two of Danny Koevermans and Ryan Johnson, Toronto FC could pose problems for defences in MLS. If they played Torsten Frings and Julian de Guzman in the centre of midfield and used two wingers such as Joao Plata and Reggie Lambe, they could be solid through the middle of the pitch while providing service to the attackers from the wings. If Winter isnt able to sufficiently change the personnel at this stage, a different way of playing may be their only solution. Whitecaps Win It wasnt pretty, but Vancouver Whitecaps got the job done on Saturday night with a 1-0 win over FC Dallas at BC Place. After two straight defeats it was an important result for Martin Rennies side as they picked up their third win of the season and moved onto 11 points from their first seven games. Keeping up that pace would give them an excellent chance of securing a playoff place come the end of the year. It took the Whitecaps until mid-June to reach 11 points last year, so despite the obvious growing pains under a new coaching regime, there is clear evidence of the major strides forward the club has already made in a short space of time. Saturday night was about the Whitecaps grinding out a result. Camilos early goal provided a flash of Brazilian brilliance, but the Caps could not find a way to build further on that strike. While Rennie would like to see greater fluidity in the teams attacking play, he continues to search for the best combination and on Saturday gave youngster Omar Salgado the chance to impress wide on the left. The teenager showed glimpses of what he can provide, and given time to develop in that position, will give the Caps another dangerous attacking option. After a disappointing defensive performance against Sporting Kansas City a few days earlier, it was good to see the Whitecaps backline looking solid once again. The clean sheet was their fifth of the season, matching the number of shutouts they achieved through the whole of 2011. cheap jerseys . The Ontario Hockey League champion Storm insist theyre the ones with ample motivation to beat the host Knights on Wednesday, even though Guelph is already assured of a berth in Sundays final with a 2-0 record. Londons motivation doesnt require explanation. At 0-2, they must win the final game of the preliminary round in order to get into a tiebreaker game Thursday. If they dont, the hosts will be eliminated by the same team that knocked them out of the OHL playoffs April 11. A change to the MasterCard Memorial Cup schedule has made the improbable more possible. A day of rest between the semifinal and the final was incorporated into the tournament in 2007. Thats helped teams that have had to take the long way to the title. Twice in the last five years, a team that opened with two losses ran the table to win the Cup: the Windsor Spitfires in 2009 and the Shawinigan Cataractes in 2012. Both clubs staved off elimination in their final round-robin game, tiebreaker and semifinal en route to claiming the title. "Teams have done it and I think we have a team thats special like that and is able to achieve things like that," Knights captain Chris Tierney said. "Everyone is confident we can pull it off." Because of that extra day of rest, the bye to the final is not the nearly airtight advantage to winning the Cup it once was. Guelph doesnt want to face London on Sunday in their home rink riding the momentum of three wins in a row, including one against them. "We dont want to let these guys get back in the tournament and see them in the final if they get on a little roll here," Storm forward Zach Mitchell said. "Were going to try and put them out here. We dont want to let them hang around." The Storm relish having the upper hand against the Knights. London won the OHL championship in both 2013 and 2012, while Guelph was eliminated in the first round those years. "Back-to-back champions, you give a lot of beatings," Storm captain Matt Finn said. "The London Knights did that for a couple of years. "To be able to knock them out in the playoffs was great for us. To have a chance to knock them out of the Memorial Cup while theyre hosting is something we want to do because of the history." As explosive as the Storm are with 11 goals in two games, the Knights are also capable of pouring the puck into the net.dddddddddddd London and Guelph both scored over 300 goals in the regular season. But the Knights have just two goals in two games and both were scored by defencemen. The Knights have been stopped on two penalty shots and are 0-for-8 on their power play. London has certainly had scoring chances, but havent yet recovered their touch around the net. "We looked at the first two games a little bit and we actually did outchance the teams in both games," forward Max Domi said. "It comes down to the details in terms of finishing around our own net, sharpening up our passes, making better decisions with the puck in terms of getting it in deep and being more disciplined. All that stuff kind of adds up to winning or losing hockey games." Theres also Londons unsettled goaltending situation. Anthony Stolarz was in net for the 1-0 loss to the Val-dOr Foreurs to open the tournament. He allowed three goals in two periods against the Edmonton Oil Kings, before he was replaced by Jake Patterson in a 5-2 loss. Head coach Dale Hunter had yet to inform his goalies Tuesday afternoon which would start in Wednesdays crucial game. Stolarz, a Philadelphia Flyers prospect, opened last years Memorial Cup in Saskatoon, but Patterson was in net for the semifinal loss to the eventual champion Halifax Mooseheads. Londons lineup features seven forwards from the team that both lost 2-1 in overtime to host Shawinigan in the 2012 final and suffered last years semifinal loss. "Nobody wants to feel that again," Knights defenceman Zach Bell said. "Everybody wants to be able to play some more junior hockey. They dont want to end it on a bad note." The Storm ousted the Knights in the second round of playoffs in five games. Stolarz didnt play in the series because he was serving an eight-game suspension handed down in the first round. Guelph and London were 3-3 against each other in the regular season. In seven of their 11 meetings so far this season, the winner has scored six or more goals. The Storm are comfortable in the role of villain at Budweiser Gardens and are ready to embrace that again Wednesday. "This city doesnt like us too much, especially after knocking them out in the playoffs," Finn said. "Theyre going to be looking to get one back on us. We dont want to let them back in. Theyre a team that can put the puck in the net. We need to limit their chances offensively and frustrate them." ' ' '

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NASCAR unveiled a revamped penalty system Tuesday that for the first time will define specific offences with pre-determined penalties. The new "Deterrence System" classifies six different levels of penalties, with fines and point deductions increasing as the infractions become more severe. The new system will be applied only to technical infractions; NASCAR will still handle behaviouraloffences individually. The structure also allows the sanctioning body to hit repeat offenders with a multiplier that could increase penalties by 50 per cent. NASCARs previous penalty system did not tie pre-determined sanctions to specific offences. "Our goal is to be more effective, fair and transparent," said Steve ODonnell, senior vice-president of racing operations. "Its never our intent to penalize, but in order to keep the playing field fair for everyone, we recognize that strong rules need to be in place." NASCAR has also removed chief appellate officer John Middlebrook. The retired General Motors executive has been replaced by Bryan Moss, president emeritus of Gulfstream Aerospace. Middlebrook had overturned or modified some key NASCAR decisions, including a penalty to Hendrick Motorsports in 2012 and Penske Racing last year. "I wanted to clearly state that Bryans appointment is not a result of recent appeals outcomes or because of the changes to the Chase," ODonnell said. "John did a great job for us, but Bryan will take over as the final appeals officer." NASCAR also has removed track promoters from its appeals panel in order to keep them from having to rule on a team while also needing that teams members to help promote races. "We have probably put some people in soome tough spots in the past," ODonnell said.dddddddddddd"You wont see national series promoters as part of that panel and youll see more industry experts participate in that role in the future." Another change to the penalty system is in the appeals process: Penalized teams will be allowed to see NASCARs presentation during the first appeal. Previously, each side presented its case without the other side in the room. Parties will now submit summaries of issues in advance of the hearing and it will be NASCARs burden to prove that a penalty violation occurred. During second and final appeals, the burden will shift to the team to prove the panel decision was incorrect. The biggest changes are to the penalty system, which is now broken into six classes. Minor technical infractions in the P1 class could lead to lost track time and other relatively light punishments; violations affecting the internal workings and performance of the engine in P6, on the other hand, could lead to the loss of 150 points, a fine of at least $150,000 and suspensions. If P5 and P6 infractions are found in post-race inspection, wins would not be eligible to be used to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship or to advance through the Chase rounds. And if the same car repeats an offence in the same category during the season, the penalty increases 50 per cent above the normal standard. "We believe the new system is easily understood and specifically lays out exactly what disciplinary action will be taken depending upon the type of technical infraction," said vice-president of competition Robin Pemberton. "More importantly, we believe we have strengthened our system to ensure even more competitive racing." ' ' '

HARRISON, N.J. -- Gareth Bale and Gylfi Sigurdsson scored second-half goals to lead English Premier League club Tottenham to its only win on a preseason tour of the U.S. with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Tuesday night. The win gave the EPLs fourth-place finisher last season the New York Cup, marking the second time in three years the Spurs have won a trophy in the Big Apple. They previously beat the Red Bulls 2-1 in the 2010 Barclays New York Challenge. Sigurdsson snapped a 1-1 tie in the 64th minute after finding a sliver of space between himself and Red Bulls defender Markus Holgersson deep on the left side. He hooked a high shot into the upper right corner past leaping Red Bulls goalie Bill Gaudette. Bale, playing at forward instead of midfield with Tottenham carrying only one front-liner on the three-exhibition tour, evened the game in the 54th when he jumped over the shorter Dax McCarty and headed in a corner kick. Kenny Cooper, a 13-goal scorer in the regular season, put the Red Bulls ahead 1-0 in the 8th minute with a penalty kick after defender Jan Vertonghen took down former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill in the box. Cooper converted with a low shot near the left post, and it stood as the Red Bulls only shot of a sluggish first half for both teams. The Spurs fared only slightly better, getting off five shots but only two on goal. One of those was thwarted by a leaping Gaudette, who lifted Bales high, hard shot just over the crossbar in the 12th minute. Cahill, signed by the Red Bulls last Thursday, spent the previous eight seasons in the EPL, scoring 68 goals in 278 appearances with Everton. Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry sat out to rest after an intense stretch of games and midfielder Rafa Marquez was a late scratch with discomfort in his left calf. He was replaced by Connor Lade. In the first two matches on its tour, Tottenham drew with the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-1 and played to a scoreless draw with EPL rival Liverpool. Cheap Jerseys From China . MALMO, SWEDEN – Santa Claus paid a visit to Team Canadas Christmas Eve dinner on Tuesday evening at Örenäs Castle, about a 40-minute drive outside Malmo where this years World Junior Hockey Championship is being held. And the big guy in red came armed with gifts and scouting reports. He called up the players one at a time and offered a quick hockey-related message. "That was quite the shot you had last game," Santa bellowed when Connor McDavid was on his lap, "Shoot, shoot, shoot." WATCH: Behind the scenes at Team Canadas Christmas Eve dinner And the 16-year-old listened, putting the puck on net four times against Germany on Monday, matching Anthony Mantha and Bo Horvat for the team lead in the tournament opener, but came away empty-handed. McDavid did notch two assists in his world junior debut, but that first goal is proving elusive. "I missed a whole bunch of chances that Im pretty embarrassed about, but I thought I played an alright game," he said. WATCH: Bob McKenzie breaks down McDavids performance against Germany If theres one criticism McDavid has faced recently its that he sometimes passes up his own scoring chance to set up an even better one with a higher degree of difficulty for a teammate. Its something hes well aware of. "I know one of the big criticisms from other people is that I dont shoot the puck enough and Im always looking for the fancy play and the pass so I try and listen to that and I do try and shoot the puck as much as I can," McDavid said. "I just try and make the right play." McDavid, more often than not, makes the right play. For example, he found his way behind the Swiss defence on Monday and scored on a breakaway in Canadas final pre-tournament game. That was the goal Santa was talking about. "He sees the ice so well," said head coach Brent Sutter. "You look at that goal he got. After he scored, the guys were all looking at each other on the bench and asking, Where did he come from? He just knows how to play the game. Hes smart, intelligent and hes got great sense for the game, tremendous hockey sense and hes got the skill-set to go with it." "There was just a quick turnover," McDavid recalled, "and I saw Mantha had the puck there and everyone kind of jumped forward on their team so I just kind of took a step to the offensive side, which I shouldnt be doing too much, but it worked out, I guess." That hockey sense, that ability to know what moment to strike, thats a key reason why McDavid is seen as the slam-dunk choice to go first overall in the 2015 NHL draft. And thats why any critique of his game at this moment in time – when hes just become the sixth 16-year-old to ever make the Canadian world junior team – seems ridiculously nitpicky. "Its probably nitpicky for sure," agreed Sam Reinhart, when asked if his linemate needs to shoot more. "Hes a great player. How does he have so many goals if he doesnt shoot? Thats my question." When he left for Canadas selection camp, McDavid was eighth in Ontario Hockey League scoring and third on the Erie Otters with 12 goals and 50 points in 31 games. He helped Canada win gold at the 2013 World Under-18 Championship, leading all scorers with eight goals and 14 points in just seven games. Reinhart and McDavid also played together at the under-18 level and formed instant chemistry. That chemistry has carried over to the under-20 level, even though McDavid has been shifted to left wing. Horvat has played between the two "youngsters" and its the one trio Sutter refused to tinker with when he juggled every other line coming off a disappointing loss to the Swedes in pre-tournament play Sunday. "Theyve probably been our most consistent line since Day 1 so thats why I wanted to keep them together," the coach explained. "Its nice," said Reinhart. "We felt like we were playing well together. Its nice when he has that confidence to keep putting us out there together." It was also a sign of just how important that line and McDavid in particular will be to the teams success. Goals may be hard to come by later in the tournament and McDavid, who also gets time on the power play, will be expected to shoulder a big part of the load. Although he doesnt see it that way. "No, I dont feel that pressure," he argued. "We have 13 unbelievably gifted forwards here that can score at any time. If its my line or any other line, it really doesnt matter to me. I dont think offence is something that we need to worry about." Sometimes its easy to forget the phenom is just 16 years-old. He was taking his driving test on the day the Canadian selection camp roster was announced. And yet his maturity suggests his mental game is just as advanced as his physical gifts. The Newmarket, Ontario native is grateful for the opportunity, but not overcome by the moment. On Thursday, he officially joined Wayne Gretzky, Eric Lindros, Jason Spezza, Jay Boumeester and Sidney Crosby as 16-year-olds to wear the Maple Leaf at the world juniors. "Its pretty special. Just to be named in the same breath as those guys is something to be pretty proud of," he said. "It was a dream come true. Its pretty special to be here, but now that were here, we know what we want to do and well take it day by day." WATCH: McDavid talks to Nabil Karim about his first ever world junior game So what will McDavid remember about his first world junior game? "Probably just the Canadian fans who made the trip. I was not expecting that at all. It was unbelievable to see. "I noticed them right away, I got chills skating out for the first little bit." Any nerves considering the stage? "Yeah, I was a little nervous," McDavid admits. "Any time you wear the Canadian jersey, there are nerves that come along with that." Wholesale NFL Jerseys . ROME -- Genoa striker Andrea Caracciolo scored a late equalizer to hold Serie A leader Juventus to a 2-2 draw Saturday. Alessandro Matri had twice given Juventus the lead but Caracciolo found the target from a sharp angle in the 85th minute after reserve goalkeeper Marco Storari -- playing for the injured Gianluigi Buffon -- failed to intervene. Matri had put Juve in front six minutes in with a deflection of a shot from Claudio Marchisio, then took advantage when Andrea Pirlo distracted the defence to restore the Turin clubs lead in the 58th. Marco Rossi had equalized for Genoa in the 31st with a bouncing header, and the visitors nearly drew level in the 63rd when Alexander Merkel hit the crossbar with a header. With 13 points, Juve moved one point ahead of Udinese, which hosts newly promoted Novara on Sunday. With three wins and four draws, Juventus remained unbeaten under new coach Antonio Conte. "Weve absolutely got to be more careful, because the game was over with five minutes to go," Conte said. "Weve got to grow game by game. Weve still got a long way to go. "This is a (long-term) project. Whoever has won knows that you dont just wake up one day and become a winner," added Conte, a former Juventus captain who won five Italian titles and one Champions League with the Bianconeri as a player. There was no sign of trouble following reports of a judicial inquiry into alleged irregular building materials used in the new Juventus stadium. Earlier, Maxi Lopez scored a late equalizer as Catania drew 2-2 at Fiorentina to extend the Tuscan clubs winless streak to four matches and pile pressure on manager Sinisa Mihajlovic. Lopez hit home a rebound of a shot from Pablo Barrientos in the 82nd that had appeared to enter the goal. Earlier, Stevan Jovetic had twice given Fiorentina the lead. First, Jovetic scored with a shot from the edge of the area in the 20th, then the Montenegro international put the hosts back in front in the 62nd with a spectacular, curving shot from beyond the area after Gennaro Delvecchio had equalized for Catania in the 43rd with a close-range effort. Jovetic missed all of last season following knee surgery. Fiorentina fans held aloft banners and chanted for Mihajlovics ouster. Visibly frustrated, Mihajlovic was expelled for protests in the 87th and Fiorentina was greeted with a chorus of whistles when the match ended. "Its fair for the fans to whistle when theyre not happy, they have every right to," Mihajlovic said. "But the criticism has been excessive. Weve got to just stay calm and focused on the job at hand." Fiorentina owner Andrea Della Valle said Mihajlovic wasnt at fault, and was already looking ahead to the next match at rival Juventus on Tuesday. "Now lets prepare for the match with Juve, this is the game thats most important to the city," Della Valle said. ATLANTA -- The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Daniel Hudson on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a right elbow injury that could lead to season-ending surgery. Manager Kirk Gibson said an MRI exam Wednesday in Phoenix showed a tear in Hudsons ulnar collateral ligament. Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery is a possibility, but Gibson said Hudson could seek a second opinion. "He just got the news. Let him sort it out," Gibson said. Hudson left Tuesday nights game with the injury and revealed for the first time he had discomfort in the elbow earlier this season. "You cant fault the kid for wanting to go out and pitch for his team," Gibson said. Hudson said on his Twitter feed, DHuddy41, players are accustomed to trying to play through pain. "Very rarely do guys go through a season and not feel some soreness or pain somewhere," Hudson said, adding "... its hard to tell the difference between soreness and pain. Ask anyone in this game and they will all tell you the same thing. Put me out there." Hudson was 16-12 with a 3.49 ERA for Arizona in 2011, but has had difficulty this season. He was on the disabled list from April 21 to May 27 with a right shoulder impingement and now faces a more serious injury. He was removed after giving up five runs and seven hits in 1 2-3 innings on Tuesday night, leaving his ERA at 7.35. Hudson also struggled in his previous start, giving up seven runs in four innings in a loss to Seattle last week. The Diamondbacks recalled left-hander Patrick Corbin from Triple-A Reno to pitch in long relief. Gibson said Josh Collmenter will take Hudsons spot in the rotation Sunday at Milwaukee. Hudson is the second Arizona starting pitcher to land on the DL in less than a week. Left-hander Joe Saunders was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained left shoulder. "Do I want to be standing here today having to go through these pains of whats going on? Absolutely not," he said. "But Ive learned over the years that this is the stuff you go through. And you have to just put your head down and just keep working." Manuels performance is under the microscope a day after a 27-6 loss at Tampa Bay that pushed the Bills (4-9) to the brink of extending the NFLs longest active playoff drought to 14 consecutive seasons. In dropping to 3-6 on the season, and 0-4 on the road, Manuel went 18 of 33 for 184 yards while throwing four interceptions to double his season total. He led an offence that managed a season-low 214 yards, converted just one of 11 third-down opportunities and crossed midfield just three times. "He did not play well," Marrone said. And yet when it came to laying blame, the coach noted there was plenty to go around in a game where very little went right for a young team showing signs of regressing in having lost seven of nine. "Hey, if everything was going well around him and he was the culprit, it would be easy for me to say wed go ahead and pull him and put another quarterback in there. I dont have any problem with that," Marrone said. "But at the end of the day, we need to make sure that people around him are doing what theyre supposed to do." Two of Manuels interceptions came on passes that glanced off receivers hands. Protection was an issue, with Manuel being sacked seven times. The running game -- usually the Bills strength -- was relatively non-existent in managing a season-low 67 yards and led by Manuel, who scrambled five times for 29 yards.dddddddddddd And penalties were an issue, with Buffalo being flagged 11 times for 114 yards. That included an offensive holding penalty against rookie receiver Robert Woods, which negated C.J. Spillers 83-yard touchdown catch early in the third quarter. The Bills defence was inconsistent, too. Buffalo limited the Buccaneers to two field goals off five turnovers and held them to 28 yards offence in the second half. The damage, however, was done in the first half, when the Bills gave up two lengthy scores, starting with Bobby Raineys 80-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. Add it up and Buffalo, which travels to play Jacksonville (4-9) on Sunday, is assured of finishing its ninth straight season without a winning record. "We will get this thing turned around," running back Fred Jackson said. He then paused, before adding: "Im sure people are sick of us saying that." Frustration is beginning to set in a day after the Bills veteran leaders were given the opportunity to voice their concerns during a closed-door, 25-minute meeting immediately following the loss. Centre Eric Wood, on Monday, said the Bills need to "grow up" if they want to make the transformation from losers to winners. "Just a couple of weeks ago, we were saying were not far off from where we want to be as a team, and then you go and lay an egg like yesterday, and you feel like youre starting over at Square 1," Wood said. "Were not. We have good players on this team. Weve just got to do some growing up." Defensive tackle Kyle Williams said player accountability is a concern. "I think you look at where we stand right now, you can question everything," Williams said. "Everythings a red flag. Everythings discouraging right now. But we have to get guys, all of us, to respond and respond better." ' ' '

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Danilo Gallinari celebrated a contract extension by scoring 21 of his 23 points in the first half and the Denver Nuggets routed the Sacramento Kings 122-93 on Wednesday night for their fifth straight victory and fifth in a row on the road. Denver led by 23 points at the half and scored the first eight points of the third quarter. They have won five consecutive road wins for the first time since joining the NBA in 1976-77. The Nuggets, who have the second-best record in the Western Conference at 13-5, signed Gallinari to a four-year, US$42 million contract extension earlier in the day. Nene had 16 points for Denver, 7-3 on the road. Andre Miller added 15 points and 10 assists, Corey Brewer also had 15 points, Ty Lawson 11, and Al Harrington 10. Rookie Jimmer Fredette scored 19 points for the Kings, who never got the lead under 20 points in the second half. DeMarcus Cousins had 17 points and 15 rebounds, Isaiah Thomas scored 16 points, and Tyreke Evans had 12 and seven assists. They had an NBA-high 92 points in the paint and only three of their first 41 baskets were outside that area. The Kings also allowed the previous points-in-the-paint high this season, giving up 72 in a Jan. 3 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. With Carmelo Anthony now playing with the New York Knicks, the Nuggets envision the 23-year-old Gallinari becoming the face of the franchise. And Gallinari responded by playing like an all-star in the opening half. He made 7 of 10 shots, hit all seven free throws, and blocked two shots in 21 minutes. Denver shot nearly 60 per cent and had its running game on display in assuming a 66-43 halftime lead. The Nuggets scored off the break and got numerous easy opportunities inside, their 46 points in the paint more than the Kings had overall. Ahead by six points after one quarter, the Nuggets outscored Sacramento 34-17 in the second. Denver bothered the youthful Kings at the defensive end and capitalized at the other end. Gallinari scored 14 points and Harrington had eight in the quarter. Despite the big halftime lead, the Nuggets experienced no letdown in the third quarter. The lead reached in the third when Denver continued its torrid shooting and outscored sluggish Sacramento 28-22. Earlier in the day, the Kings announced that leading scorer Marcus Thornton is expected to miss one or two weeks with a deep bruise in his left thigh. Thornton, who is averaging 16.4 points, was replaced in the starting lineup by Fredette. The struggling Kings, who are the NBAs youngest team, were coming off a pair of road losses, including a humbling 128-95 loss on Saturday to Memphis. The Kings are 4-8 under Keith Smart, who replaced fired Paul Westphal seven games into the season. NOTES: The Nuggets also signed backup centre Kosta Koufos to a three-year, $9 million contract extension. Kings forward Chuck Hayes, who has missed 11 straight games with a dislocated left shoulder, might return to the active roster Saturday against Utah. Denver played its second straight game without starting guard Arron Afflalo, who is out with a right groin injury. ... U.S. Ski Team womens head coach Alex Hoedlmoser told The Associated Press that Vonn was set to arrive in Soelden, Austria on Monday and planned to train on snow beginning Tuesday. The opening race of the season is the giant slalom in Soelden, Austria, on Oct. 26. "If she feels like she can podium then shes probably going to (race)," Hoedlmoser said by phone from Austria. "But if not, if she doesnt feel like shes 100 per cent, were going to give here those weeks off until the U.S. races (on Thanksgiving weekend)." The coach added that its "totally a day-by-day decision." Vonn shredded her anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in a crash at the world championships in Schladming, Austria, last February. The original timetable didnt even have the reigning Olympic downhill champion in ski boots until November, but when the U.S. team travelled to Portillo, Chile for its training camp in August, Vonn was there. "Were going to continue on where we left off in Chile and see how things go," Hoedlmoser said. "Everything started out pretty promising. We just got to go into this training block and see how shes doing." Vonn said eaarlier this month that starting in Soelden was "definitely a possibility," adding, "I have to get over there and see how I feel.dddddddddddd." Vonns best events are downhill and super-G, however, and giant slalom would represent a major test for her surgically repaired leg. But Hoedlmoser was impressed with he saw in Portillo. "You do an on-snow progression with injured athletes and you see how much you can push that," he said. "By the end of the camp she was skiing super-G and GS like nothing really happened." Vonn said her knee held up perfectly in Chile, with no pain or swelling. And even though she missed the teams technical camp in New Zealand in August, Hoedlmoser said she has the experience to overcome the lack of miles. "Its not really race prep were going with her," he said. "Were just continuing on with the progression and then well see where shes at." Meanwhile, now Hoedlmoser has to recuperate from injury, too. He broke his foot in a fall on a flight of stairs in his home. "Better its me than the athletes," the coach said, adding that hell still be joining Vonn and teammate Mikaela Shiffrin on the slopes later this week -- on one ski. "Weve got to be out there," Hoedlmoser said. "Theres no other way." ' ' '

Flowery Branch, GA - The Atlanta Falcons signed one of the most prolific kick returners in NFL history Thursday, agreeing to terms with Devin Hester on an undisclosed deal. Hester, who was released by the Bears earlier this offseason, is the NFLs all-time leader in punt return touchdowns (13) and total kick return touchdowns (1. Including his 108-yard missed field goal return touchdown, Hesters 19 overall return scores are tied with Hall of Famer Deion Sanders for the most in regular-season history. When adding Hesters 92-yard kickoff return touchdown to open Super Bowl XLI, his 20 overall return touchdowns (including the postseason) are an NFL record. In 123 games played (46 starts) over eight seasons with the Bears, Hesters 3,241 punt return yards are eighth most in NFL history and his 12.3 punt return average ranks fifth. He left Chicago as the franchises all-time leader in total return touchdowns, punt return touchdowns, punt return yards, kickoff return yards (5,504), total kick return yards (8,745) and second in all-purpose yards (11,632). As a receiver, Hester had 217 receptions for 2,807 yards with the Bears. cheap nfl jerseys . Rather than get down over what could have been a costly mistake, the 23-year-old Frenchman recovered with back-to-back birdies on his final two holes to capture his maiden European Tour title by four strokes over Tommy Fleetwood. The smile, he said, was the key to victory. "You need to take the pleasure on the golf course and keep the smile because if you are upset about a missed shot or not lucky because you make a lip out or something like that, its not good to have this feeling on the golf course," he said. "You need to enjoy and have the smile." Levy, playing in just his second year on the tour, vaulted into the lead with a career-best 10-under 62 in the second round and looked to be headed for a runaway victory after making a birdie on the 13th Sunday to extend his lead to five shots. But then he ran into trouble on the par-4 15th. After hitting his approach shot well past the green, he putted from the fringe and sent the ball off the other side of the green. He chipped back to the green and two-putted for a double bogey, allowing Fleetwood back within two strokes. Fleetwood, playing in the group ahead of Levy, then tightened the pressure further with a birdie on the par-5 17th to pull another shot back. Levy responded, however, with a flawless 3-iron approach shot over a lake on the same hole to set up a three-foot birdie putt. "I just closed my eyes and got one of the best shots of the week to the green," he said. After Fleetwood bogeyed the 18th, Levy sealed the win by dropping another perfectly placed approach shot three feet from the pin for another birdie. He shot a final-round 69 for a 19-under 269 overall. "We aim for wins, but today I didnt really have a chance. I had to play outstanding golf, but Alex has led from Friday, and thats one of the hardest things you can do," Fleetwood said. "What a performance from him.&qquot; Levy has faltered under pressure before.dddddddddddd. Last year, he was tied with Ernie Els entering the final round of the BMW International Open in Munich but let the title slip away with four bogeys on the back nine. He ended up in third, his previous best result on the tour. Since then, however, he said hes been inspired by the success of his good friend and compatriot, Victor Dubuisson, who beat Tiger Woods to win his first European Tour title at the Turkish Airlines Open in November and then was runner-up to Jason Day at the Match Play Championship in February. The other French players have given him plenty of encouragement as he chased his first tour victory this week, too. Dubuisson has sent him text messages throughout the week, and the French contingent in Shenzhen doused him with celebratory champagne after he sank his final putt on the 18th. "We have some great players in France, both young and old, and we all have a great relationship," Levy said. "There are some very good players and have been some great wins for Victor, Julien Quesne, Greg Bourdy, Raphael Jacquelin over the past couple of years which is great for French golf and great with the Ryder Cup coming to France in 2018." Fleetwood was second at 15 under and Alvaro Quiros of Spain was third, another two strokes back. No. 3-ranked Henrik Stenson, who was bedridden with the flu earlier this week, finally put together his first solid round of the tournament, with seven birdies and no bogeys for a 65. The Swede improved to joint fifth place but still fell short of the win he needed to overtake Tiger Woods at the top of the world rankings. "Its really tight and I just need to play better if I want to get to that spot. And I should have to play better than I have done earlier on this year if I want to get to world No. 1, thats for sure," he said. PGA champion Jason Dufner opened with a birdie-eagle on his first two holes before slipping back to joint 54th with two double bogeys and a triple bogey on the 17th. ' ' '

(CCA) - One of the finest front-end players in curling history has passed away. Neil Harrison, a two-time world champion with skip Ed Werenich (1983 as the lead, 1990 as the alternate), died early Monday at the age of 64. In his prime, he was one of the games best leads, and was a trailblazer for front-enders who specialized in the positions. He earned six Brier Purple Hearts, representing Ontario, and was elected to the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1991. "Hell be greatly missed, obviously," said fellow Hall-of-Famer Russ Howard, who played against Harrison for many years in Ontario, and played two seasons with him in the late 1990s. "I truly believe he was the first of the guys in the modern era of curling to say that he was going to perfect his position. It used to be that your lead was your worst curler, where you put your weak link. But he was so good - he made a positive difference on every team he played for." Howard said Harrison, who also won 10 Canadian firefighters curling championships and was the captain of the victorious Team North America team at the 2011 WFG Continental Cup in Camrose, Alta., caught on to some of the nuances of curling, most of which are now commonplace, long before his peers "We got to a final for $40,000, and I was throwing my draws heavy all week. I had a draw to the four-foot for the win against Kerry Burtnyk," recalled Howard. "I let the rock go, and Im screaming, whoa, whoa, right off. But Neil has his head down and hes pounding it as hard as he can. Well, the thing ends up right on the button. We come off the ice to have a beer, and I say to Neil, Why were you sweeping that? I slid out heavy, and I was heavy all week, but he told me that I slid heavy, but there was no rotation on the rock, so he knew it was going to die. That was Neil; he was ahead of his time in recognizing that sort of thing." Harrison was equally in demand off the ice, said Howard with a laugh. "Nobody could hold court like Neil Harrison," he said. "He was one of those guys who everybody wanted to sit down and have a beer with." "Im just grateful," a confident yet humble Burress said Sunday night.DETROIT -- The Lions re-signed tight end Brandon Pettigrew on Friday, keeping one of Matthew Staffords top targets and a player who can potentially make defences regret focusing too much on Calvin Johnson. "The key is to be able to keep your good players," new Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. "And, I think anytime you can do that in an organization, its great. It doesnt always work out for you, but when you can, and a guys been productive for you, I think its huge." Pettigrew will get a $16 million, four-year contract with half of the money guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke Friday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because terms were not announced. "Obviously, this is certainly a long-term commitment from both sides and were certainly looking forward to that," Caldwell said. The Lions drafted Pettigrew with the 20th overall pick in 2009, the same year they selected Stafford first overall in the NFL draft. The native of Tyler, Texas, has 284 receptions for 2,828 yards and 16 touchdowns in five NFL seasons. Pettigrew said part of the reason he wanted to stay was because hes in "a groove," with teammates such as Stafford. "We got drafted together," he said. "Weve already got that going, and I think thats important. I love the city. Im grateful for being able to be here. The city is going through change, as is the organization. Its just an honour to be a part of that." He tested the market as a free agent before deciding to stay in Detroit. "Of course, the pursuits were real because thats just part of the business," Pettigrew said. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Pettigrew is yet another weapon for Stafford, who already has Johnson and will now have receiver Golden Tate next season. Detroit, with a solid offensive line, should be able to strike a balance in the running game with Reggie Bush in his second season paired with Joique Bell, who was re-signed with a $9.3 million, three-year deal earlier this week. "He gives you a guuy that really is a dual threat in terms of being able to handle the end-line blocking on the line of scrimmage, which he does very well," Caldwell said.dddddddddddd "Also, obviously, hes a threat in the passing game. When you look at whats going to happen in most cases with the guys that we have on the outside, our inside receivers are going to certainly become a bigger part of our game." Pettigrew is coming off a relatively disappointing season, which probably cost him some money on the market. He had 41 receptions for 416 yards and two TDs, his lowest numbers in each category since he was a rookie. When Pettigrew was at his best in 2001, he caught 83 passes for 777 yards and five TDs -- all career highs -- and helped the franchise end an 11-year post-season skid. Pettigrew said he spoke to some members of teams new staff, including Caldwell. "Hes already told me he wants me to step up and be in that role of a leader and coming out to accept that," Pettigrew said. "Ive been here long enough, and I agree with him. He seems like a great guy. So, Im looking forward to getting back." The Lions next significant move may be finding a starting safety to play alongside Glover Quin, who was signed last year as a free agent, to replace Louis Delmas. They seem to be interested in adding veteran safety James Ihedigbo, but he left team headquarters without a contract after a visit Thursday. Ihedigbo made 99 tackles last season, ranking second on the Baltimore Ravens, and had three interceptions after not picking off one pass in his first five NFL seasons. He started 16 games last season and 12 games in 2011 for the New England Patriots and ranked fifth on the team in tackles. He spent his first three seasons in the league with the New York Jets after making the team in 2008 as an undrafted rookie. Detroit, desperate for success with only one playoff victory since 1957, also hopes Ndamukong Suh will sign a new contract to avoid having the defensive tackle count more than $20 million against the salary cap in 2014. NEW YORK -- Novak Djokovic sat in his sideline chair and winced while his right shoulder was massaged and manipulated by a trainer. Moments later, Djokovic resumed hitting slower-than-usual serves, slapping weak forehands into the net and falling further behind against Andy Murray in his last tune-up match before the U.S. Open. On the CBS broadcast, Mary Carillo asked announcing partner and former No. 1 Jim Courier whether seeing Djokovic struggle so much changed his view that the Serb should be seen as the favourite to win the years last Grand Slam tournament, which starts Monday. "Not even remotely," Courier replied. "Not a scratch on the surface." Yes, given how great -- nearly perfect, actually -- Djokovics 2011 has been so far, plenty of people still figure hes the man to beat at the U.S. Open. Even with that tired and bothersome shoulder that eventually led him to quit during the final of the Cincinnati Masters last weekend. That went into the books as only Djokovics second loss in 59 matches during a marvellous season that featured a 41-match winning streak and nine titles, including Wimbledon and the Australian Open. "I mean, its kind of expected. Ive played so many matches this year. I mean, Ive been winning, you know, a lot and reaching the final stages of each event," Djokovic said. "Considering the schedule that is very busy in tennis, its kind of normal to expect that at some stage you are exhausted." Considering all the ailments and assorted other issues that have hampered so many top tennis players lately, it probably would be appropriate if Djokovic is somewhat less than 100 per cent fit. Even if his assessment was: "I am confident that I can recover and be ready." Run down a list of the sports stars a day before Thursdays draw in New York, and most have been bothered by something: -- Rafael Nadal, the defending champion, has blisters on his left foot and tender fingers that he burned by touching a hot ceramic plate at a restaurant, of all things. Aside from that, there is his 0-5 record against Djokovic this year, all in finals, and upset losses at Montreal and Cincinnati. "Sometimes you are playing well; sometimes you are playing worse," Nadal said. "I am playing a little bit worse now than well." -- Roger Federer, who counts five U.S. Open titles among his record 16 Grand Slam trophies, also exited relatively early at those two key hard-court tune-up tournaments. Now he is facing the real possibility of ending his streak of winning at least one major championship eight years in a row. He also turned 30 on Aug. 8, and the last man to win a Grand Slam title after that milestone birthday was Andre Agassi at the 2003 Australian Open. -- Serena Williams cited swelling in her right big toe while pulling out of the Cincinnati hard-court tournament, a far-less-worrisome problem than Djokovics. Williams -- who leads active women with 13 Grand Slam singles titles, including three in New York -- is a popular pick in the womens field, even though shes seeded only 28th after missing nearly a full year with a series of health scares. -- The top-seeded woman, Caroline Wozniacki, is apparently healthy, but she is dealing with inconsistent play, losing her first two summer hard-court matches, including one against 19-year-old Christina McHale of New Jersey. Then again, at least theyre all planning to play at Flushing Meadows. Kim Clijsters, whose three U.S. Open titles include 2009 and 2010, pulled out of the tournament because of a stomach muscle injury. And 2001 champion Lleyton Hewitt withdrew, too. At the Cincinnati Masters -- where No. 2-ranked Nadal and No. 3 Federer both lost in the quarter-finals, before Djokovic bowed out in the final -- No. 4 Murray was asked whether all of that might bode well for his chances for a first Grand Slam title in New York. "Im sure come the start of the U.S. Open next Monday, all of them will be fine," Murray said. "I think each one of them will be playing great tennis, much better than they have played here." ATLANTA -- This was just what the Atlanta Hawks needed as they geared up for the playoffs: a chance to give the starters plenty of rest, while the backups put on quite a show. Tracy McGrady led six players in double figures and the Hawks, with perhaps their most impressive showing of the season, built a 37-point lead in the first half on the way to a 116-84 rout of the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. "That was a lot of fun," centre Jason Collins said. Indeed it was, at least for the home team. With their highest-scoring half of the season, the Hawks were up 72-42 at the break in the first of five straight home games to close the regular season. Atlanta is battling with Boston and Orlando to be the final Eastern Conference team with home-court advantage. The Hawks sure played like it mattered in this one, getting contributions from everyone in what was essentially a mirror image of the 116-77 beatdown that the Pistons handed Cleveland the previous night. Detroit had nothing left for the Hawks, who got a season-best 72 points from their bench. "We really wanted to come out with a lot of energy," Collins said. "We want to finish the season strong with the last five games on our home court. Weve still got a lot to play for." McGrady scored a season-high 17 points, flipping a wristband into the crowd as he walked off the court to a big cheer in the fourth quarter. Ivan Johnson added 16 points, Joe Johnson had 13, Josh Smith chipped in 12, while Marvin Williams and Willie Green scored 10 apiece. Jannero Pargo had nine points and eight assists, setting up numerous dunks and easy baskets. The Hawks led by as many as 41 points but couldnt quite hold on for its biggest win of the season, which remained a 36-point blowout at New Jersey in late December. But Atlanta couldnt have scripted it much better at this point in the season, a laugher of a game that essentially gave the starters a night off with a grueling season winding down and the most important games still to come. Joe Johnson played more than any of the starters, less than 23 minutes, and Jeff Teague was the only other one to go as many as 20 minutes. "We ask a lot of those guys," Green said. "When we come in the game, its up to us to continue their level of play or even pick it up a notch." Detroit, which shot a dismal 35 per cent (32 of 92), was led by Greg Monroes 17 pooints.dddddddddddd It was hard for coach Lawrence Frank to take, especially with the Pistons coming off one of the most lopsided wins in the league this season. "One day you play like a king, the next day you dont," Frank said. The Hawks led 39-20 at the end of the first quarter and really turned it on in the second, even with the entire starting lineup watching it all from the bench. Williams scored eight points, McGrady had six, Pargo and Green five apiece, and Ivan Johnson four -- including a rim-shaking, left-handed slam. Jerry Stackhouse and Vladimir Radmanovic also knocked down shots, meaning every available Atlanta player was on the score sheet by halftime. Once things got out of hand, it was nothing more than a dunkfest for Atlanta. Pargo orchestrated three slams in the second quarter, and his most impressive play mightve been one that he didnt even earn an assist. Dribbling under the basket to get from one side of the court to the other, he lured most of the Pistons defence before flipping a pass to Green, who quickly whipped it back over to Williams all alone under the basket for the dunk. The Hawks didnt even mind when McGrady was called for goaltending, leaping up to pick up off a jumper that was clearly on its way down. The starters got a good chuckle from that one as they watched from the bench. Atlanta shot a season-high 62 per cent from the field (28 of 45) in the first half. "We were two different teams," Detroits Walker Russell said, referring to the previous night. "I dont want to blame the back-to-back because were supposed to come out and be competitive every night. But sometimes it just happens. They came out and really put it to us." Notes: The Pistons rested F Tayshaun Prince while in the midst of three games in three nights. Austin Daye started in his place but scored just four points on 1-of-11 shooting. Frank wanted to shake up his rotation a bit with the season winding down, but he insisted the changes had nothing to do with the poor performance. "No excuse. This has nothing to do with experimentation." ... The Hawks played without C Erick Dampier, who was sidelined by a strained left calf. ... The Hawks are still listing C Zaza Pachulia (sprained foot) as day to day, but coach Larry Drew revealed a bit of concern when asked if the rugged player would be back for the playoffs. "I hope so," Drew said. ' ' '

DETROIT -- Nicklas Lidstrom has a chance to ponder his future much sooner than he wanted. Lidstroms 20th NHL season ended Friday night when Nashville eliminated the Detroit Red Wings with a 2-1 victory in Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round series. The four-time Stanley Cup champion and seven-time Norris Trophy winner turns 42 this month. The defenceman didnt have a point this post-season, but he played a team-high 118 minutes in the post-season. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland and coach Mike Babcock are hoping Lidstrom returns, but the Swedish star isnt even ready to talk about it. "Im going to take a few weeks," Lidstrom said. "Im sure Kenny wants to sit down and go over things as well. Ill see what he wants to do and what timetable hell give me for me to make a decision." Lidstrom played in 70 games, missing more time because of injury than he ever has in his career. The Red Wings got knocked in the opening round for the first time since 2006 and havent gotten past the second round since 2009 when they were defending champions and lost to Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. Lidstrom, though, insisted his health and the teams apparent decline are not making him lean toward retirement or returning for perhaps another $6 million, one-year contract. "Right now, its just the disappointment of losing in the playoffs," he said. Detroit was the first team eliminated from the playoffs -- just two months after it led the NHL in points. Injuries stunted the success the Red Wings were having midway through the season when they won a league-record 23 straight home games and they slumped to become a fifth-seeded team with a tough matchup. Detroit started to struggle to get its winning ways and scoring touch back toward the end of the regular season and couldnt fix problems in the post-season. The Red Wings had only one goal in each of their last two games against the Predators scored just nine in five games against their standout goaltender, Pekka Rinne. "I didnt think we had enough up front and I think it showed in our scoring," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. Red Wings stars Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg were solid, leading the team with three points each in the playoffs. Supporting players, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula, though, combined for only one goal and two assists after ranking third and fourth on the team in scoring in the regular season. The Red Wings were seventh in the NHL in scoring and goals against in the regular season, but they werent among the league leaders on offence or defence in the playoffs. Detroits lack of offence was really a problem against the Predators because it had so many miscues on defence that put Jimmy Howard vulnerable in one-on-one situations or left the net open. "It hurt us for sure," Lidstrom said. If Lidstrom decides his career is over, it would be a setback for the Red Wings because theyre already expecting to have a hole on blue line without defenceman Brad Stuart, who wants to play closer to his family in Northern California. "Regardless of what happens, it has been a great experience," Stuart said. Detroits other unrestricted free agents are 28-year-old forward Jiri Hudler, who scored a career-high 25 goals, and 39-year-old Tomas Holmstrom, who might not be welcomed back after helping the franchise win four Stanley Cups in his 15 seasons because his production has declined. "Hopefully, well see them back next year," Zetterberg said. In July, the Red Wings will have a lot of cap space to make moves. By then, they hope some of that money is already spent on a new deal for Lidstrom. Babcock seemed to publicly lobby for Lidstrom to come back before he played his last game of the post-season. "Hes too good to quit," Babcock said. wholesale jerseys . A lack of focus from Toronto slugger Jose Bautista in a big ninth-inning situation helped them seal the victory. wholesale nfl jerseys . EAST LONDON, South Africa -- Ricardo Santos of Portugal fired a 9-under 62 for a two-shot lead in the first round of the Africa Open on Thursday. Santos had five birdies going out and four birdies coming in for a flawless opening round at East London Golf Club. In a four-way tie for second were Denmarks Lucas Bjerregaard, Wales Rhys Davies, South Africas Garth Mulroy and Englands Richard Bland, who all shot 64s. Americans Brinson Paolini and John Hahn were among a group of six players tied for sixth, three off Santos lead. Santos was the 2012 rookie of the year on the European Tour and has a decent record in South Africa with top-30 finishes in his last five events. "Im very pleased to make a run like I did today," he said. "I hit the ball solidly from the tee and my putting was all good. To shoot minus nine you have to play awesome golf." One of the last finishers, Santos overtook the field with three birdies in his last five holes after starting on No. 10. They ensured he was two clear of the chasing pack, which includes one of the home favourites, Mulroy. Mulroy had an eagle on No. 3, six birdies and a bogey. Early leader Santos is one of a string of foreigners fighting home player dominance in South Africa. The four previous Africa Opens have been won by South Africans and George Coetzees victory at the Joburg Open last week was the ninth home win in the last 12 tour events in the country. cheap nfl jerseys . England midfielder Frank Lampard scored one goal and set up another to inspire Chelsea to a 3-0 win over Bolton, ending the teams miserable run of five straight winless games to lift it above Arsenal and provisional fourth place.MILWAUKEE -- Dwight Howard was disappointed by the Rockets inconsistent effort, even if it was good enough to beat the Bucks. Howard scored 27 points, including three crucial free throws in the closing seconds, and James Harden scored 10 of his 22 points in the decisive third quarter to help Houston hold off a short-handed but scrappy Milwaukee team for its fifth straight win, 101-95 Saturday night. "We didnt attack like we needed to the whole game," Howard said. "There were spurts when we attacked the basket, but there were times when settled for the 3. We have to always be in attack mode." The Rockets let the Bucks get close once in the third and then again down the stretch. "They dug into the lead a little bit," Rockets head coach Kevin McHale said. "Im just glad we got that win. That wasnt one of our best games. We had a lot of possessions offensively where we didnt move the ball." Jeremy Lin added 18 as the Rockets tied their longest winning streak of the season, a mark set in late November. "Were too up and down right now," Lin said. "We go up 12 and then we are only up six. It would be nice for us to build leads and really dominate from start to finish." Howard grabbed 13 rebounds for his 33rd double-double of the season, the third highest in the NBA this season. Nate Wolters, who scored a career-high 19, sparked the Bucks with seven points during a 16-7 run to open the second half and that pulled them to 63-61. "Defensively, they kind of got what they wanted there for a while," McHale said of the Bucks effort. "But we had some good runs inside the game that got us some separation." The Rockets quickly answered with baskets by Patrick Beverley and Terence Jones, and then Harden added seven points to prevent Milwaukee from getting any closer using an 18-8 run to end the third and take an 81-69 lead into the fourth. Brandon Knight scored 23 points and Khris Middleton 20, including three free throws aftter being fouled behind the arc with 46.dddddddddddd6 seconds remaining as Milwaukee came back to trail 98-95. Howard made three of four free throws for Houstons final points and seal the win. "I thought for the most part, we hung in there," Bucks head coach Larry Drew said. "The first half we really were just trying to make it work after we lost Larry Sanders." The Bucks were already down to four reserves before an inadvertent elbow from Harden knocked Sanders out of the game with 7:37 left in the first quarter. The two were fighting for a rebound under the Bucks basket. Sanders fell to the floor for a few moments before walking off. He did not return due to blurred vision. After the game, Bucks coach Larry Drew didnt have any additional news on Sanders. John Henson thought that Sanders got hit in the eye and probably would just have a black eye. With the loss of Sanders, the Rockets had an easier time in the low post and outscored the Bucks 58 to 48 in the paint. Luke Ridnour (back), Ekpe Udoh (ankle), Ersan Ilyasova (back), O.J. Mayo (illness/conditioning) and Caron Butler (ankle) missed the game for Milwaukee. Lin came off the bench to score 11 points in the first half as Houston shot 53.5 per cent and took a 56-45 lead at the half. Harden added 11 points and then helped Howard get his 11th just before the half ended on a slick alley-oop. Howard had just converted a three-point play when Harden lofted a pass that the Rockets centre dunked for a 15-point lead. NOTES: Houston improved to 15-3 against the Eastern Conference, including five straight against the East. ... Rockets C Omer Asik returned after missing the last 31 games with a right thigh/knee injury, but F Greg Smith sore right knee kept him back in Houston. Hes played in only 11 games so far this season. ... Howard is 17 of 18 in career games against the Bucks. ... The Rockets are 12-0 when Howard has scored at least 20 points in the last six weeks, compared to 2-6 when he doesnt. ' ' '
