But the forecast was calling for a wet night, turning to heavy snow thats supposed to taper by Tuesday morning after an estimated accumulation of three to six inches in the Twin Cities area. The expected high for Tuesday was 42 degrees. Four of Minnesotas last eight scheduled games have been wiped out before they began because of weather problems, including three at home. That matched their previous season high for postponements at Target Field, in 2011. The Twins had only one washout in 2012 and one in 2010, plus a game that was suspended in that inaugural year for the limestone-and-glass ballpark. The Twins moved out of the climate-controlled Metrodome after the 2009 season. DAVIE, Fla. -- New Miami Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey stepped to the microphone and apologized for his hoarse voice, explaining he wore it down in recent days trying to build a winner. This wasnt supposed to happen. Ahead of the light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, the UFC tried selling fans on the idea about this potentially being a competitive matchup. Pundits and even the odds-makers would tell a different story, some betting sites capped Jones at one point at -850 (Bet $850 to win $100). But clearly thats not what ensued on Saturday night. From the moment the bell rang, the 26-year old Swede turned the fight into Jones most competitive matchup to date. Using his reach, effective striking and take downs, the Alliance MMA fighter displayed fearless confidence and won over the audience in the Air Canada Centre after five rounds of action. While his performance didnt earn him the victory on the judges scorecards (losing 47-48, 47-48, 46-49), it did immediately spark up debate as to whom Jones next opponent should be. "Who doesnt want to see this rematch?" said UFC President Dana White at the post-fight press conference. "Id like to do the rematch it makes sense, but we have to wait to see what happens -- maybe it is Glover (Teixeira), maybe it is a rematch, I dont know." In my opinion the answer is simple. Book the rematch between Jones and Gustafsson sometime next year and have that event held in Europe. The aftermath of Saturdays main event was a potential fight of year candidate and a winning lottery ticket at the promotions disposal. In order to cash that ticket, they need to carry this momentum over into Jones next fight. Pundits will argue that Glover Teixeira is a more real candidate as hes currently undefeated inside the octagon and most recently dispatched fellow top contender Ryan Bader via first round stoppage earlier this month. The problem with that is who does Gustafsson square off with next? Phil Davis has won three straight, but theyre now fellow teammates and already fought back at UFC 112. Lyoto Machida has dropped to middleweight, Dan Henderson is fighting Vitor Belfort, Thiago Silva and Matt Hamill have both fought Gustafsson recently. Its possible the winner of Rashad Evans vs. Chael Sonnen could be next in line, but are they deserving being 1-2 in their last three fights? I dont think so. While no doubt the 33-year old Teixeira has earned his spot, a matchup with Jones right now would kill any potential of Gustafsson emerging as a European superstar for the promotion. Not since the days when Andrei Arlovski held the UFC heavyweight title back in 2005 has the promotion had a European champion. One of the challenges for the UFC in recent years has been marketing European fighters and after Saturday night, they certainly have an ideal candidate. While the Canadiens have got off a to very respectable 5-3 start on the season, the next few weeks might prove to be their biggest challenge. Due to the fact the Habs training staff has been the busiest members of the club to start the year, the injury ward is a full house, and now its time for the kids to play a bigger role. The Canadiens started the season without Alexei Emelin, lost Douglas Murray and Davis Drewiske for extended periods during training camp, George Parros saw just over four minutes opening night, Max Pacioretty missed the second game of the year, returned and then suffered the hamstring injury in Winnipeg, Daniel Briere left with a concussion and Brandon Prust hurt his shoulder against Nashville.? Many of the injuries have been under unusual circumstances as well, which makes it all the more frustrating. Yet, the Canadiens have managed to battle on, thanks to some stellar goaltending from Carey Price and the youth movement emerging into bigger roles. Price has been the backbone of the teams success early this year, and is making a very strong case to be Team Canadas starter in Sochi. He has stopped 139 of the last 145 shots he has faced over four games with a save percentage of .959% including a shutout against the Jets. He has tweaked his game working with Stephane Waite, and now finds himself playing a more compact style. Hes consistently square to the shooter, swallowing up rebounds, and has stood up on high shots, swatting them away with his arm. Its clear that Price is on the top of his game and seems to be getting stronger as the games wear on. P.K. Subban leads all NHL defenseman in points, and is continuing to build on his Norris Trophy season from last year, also making it tough for Team Canada to ignore his play. His ice time has been increasing on special teams as well, which is a work in progress for the coaching staff. He is the NHL leader in power play ice time, averaging over five minutes a game. He has shown great chemistry with Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher on his wings, as that line has been the most dangerous every night. Now with all the injuries, they will be relied on even more to carry the load. All part of the youth movement needing to play a bigger role. One player that is slowly gaining the confidence of Michel Therrien and in turn is getting more responsibility is Michael Bournival. He scored his first NHL goal at home this week against Columbus.? So far, the 21 year old has averaged 8:39 in time on ice, but has been around the 10 minute mark the last 3 games and has fired 11 shots on goal. His speed has been an asset, and it looks as though hell be promoted against the Oilers on a line with Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta. Patrick Holland is also set to make his NHL debut as he was recalled from Hamilton along with Michael Blunden to help fill the vacant forward spots.? Holland was acquired along with Rene Bourque as part of the trade with Calgary involving Michael Cammalleri in January 2012. The veteran forward line of Rene Bourque, David Desharnais and Travis Moen will also be expected to elevate their offensive output. The three have combined for just two goals and six points total in the opening eight games, with Bourque covering both goals and half the points. It wont an easy week either, with the Oilers visiting Montreal on Tuesday, looking to avenge a 4-1 loss in Edmonton. On Thursday, Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu make their only visit to the Bell Centre this year with the Ducks, followed by the Sharks on Saturday night. While punting from sideline to sideline with Noel Prefontaine during practice, Waters kicked one from one sideline, across the field, over the head of some media members and over the players bench. It went roughly 75-80 yards in the air. Jerious Norwood gets the start at running back for the injured Chad Kackert. Norwood is coming off a game against Montreal where he carried the ball eight times for 102 yards and caught four passes for 62 more. A kick return specialist in the NFL, Norwood said his fastest time in the 40-yard dash was 4.33 seconds. Aaron Maybin gets the nod at DE. His only start of the season came in the season finale against Montreal. The most obvious thing about Maybin is how quickly he gets off the ball. The Argos have not had a great pass rush this season and Maybins presence may help. Ticket demand was such that an additional block of upper-deck seats was made available Saturday afternoon.ddddddddddddThe latest estimate is that around 40,000 will be in attendance. CHICAGO -- Derrick Rose isnt wavering. He still sees himself as a star, a cornerstone player, despite another major knee injury that brought his long-awaited return to a screeching halt. So he wasnt quite sure what to make of the idea. Is it time for the Chicago Bulls to move on, to abandon the idea of building around him, given his injuries? "What can I say to that?" Rose said. Then, after a long pause, he added, "You could be a fool if you want to. Dead serious. I know Im going to be all right." In fact, hes not quite ruling out a return this season. The superstar point guard left the door slightly open for a comeback in the playoffs if his surgically repaired right knee is healed -- even though the team has said he will miss the rest of the year. Rose tore the medial meniscus in his right knee in a game at Portland on Nov. 22. He had surgery in Chicago three days later, cutting short his comeback after he sat out last season recuperating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. "If Im healthy and the situation is right, I will be back playing," Rose said Thursday when asked if he might return for the playoffs. "If Im healthy and my meniscus is fully healed, of course Ill be out there playing. But if its something totally different and the outcome is not how I would want it to be, theres no need." That comment aside, the odds of a comeback this season appear to be just about nil given that the team has ruled him out. "Right now, its been determined that hes out for the season," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "So thats the way were going to approach. If something changes later on, well adjust then." The bigger issue remains how effective Rose will be whenever he makes his next return. The MVP in 2011, he tore the ACL in his left knee in the playoff opener against Philadelphia the following year, sending top-seeded Chicago to a first-round exit. The Bulls relived their nightmare last month in Portland when Rose lost his footing while turning to get back on defence. Rose limped across the court, unable to put any weight on his knee, a huge blow for a team that thought it would challenge Miami in the Eastern Conference. Rose is in an all-too-familiar spot, trying to recuperate. He has played in just 50 NBA games -- 49 in the regular season and that lone playoff game -- since the Bulls run to the conference finals during his MVP season, but he felt as if he was returning to form just as he went down again. Rose was averaging 15.9 points and was shooting just over 35 per cent. But he looked a little better in his final two games with 19 points in a loss at Denver and 20 against Portland. "I was catching a rhythm of how I used to play," he said. "I think I was getting in condition more than anything for this season. For this one to happen, just from me turning and running back down the court, theres nothing I can say about it, nothing I can do about it, but just take it, be strong." Rose wondered how it could happen to him again after everything he went through. But he was also relieved he didnt suffer an ACL tear. Even so, he knew the injury was serious when he was being examined in Portland. He said his leg was "catching on the meniscus side, on the inside." "I started thinking about, Why me? and all that stuff the day after the surgery," Rose said. He said meniscus tear was a "freak accident." "(The doctors) look at the tape, look at the film," Rose said. "The first one (the ACL tear) could have been I put too much pressure or I put too much weight on that leg at that time. This one ... I didnt buckle me knee or anything. I paused for a second. I was able to still run a few steps before I couldnt walk. It just happened." Now, hes going for therapy every day. Hes incorporating yoga and swimming into his rehab routine and is able to put pressure on his leg. He said he might try to land a spot on the U.S. world championship team next summer if hes ready, but he still wont be playing in any pickup games. He also said hes not about to start recruiting players to Chicago -- something he hasnt done in the past -- even though the Bulls core could have a different look. Luol Deng has an expiring contract and Carlos Boozer is a candidate to be amnestied. But Rose said he hasnt thought about possible changes. "Theres a chance I could come back so Im just cheering them on," he said. For now, the Bulls are in a difficult spot. Only moments prior did he and the Leafs completely melt down, blowing a two-goal third period lead before falling to Eric Staal (two goals) and the Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime on Thursday night. "Just a couple miscues and thats how fast things can change," Aulie told the Leaf Report, following the game. "3-1 lead, we should keep playing, do the little things, be in the right position. They got a couple breaks tonight and it came back to haunt us." "At least we got a point," Ron Wilson noted, somewhat sourly, "but Im not happy. Im disappointed in the way once we got the lead that our mental approach wasnt right. "We should know how to defend a lead. I know we know how to defend the lead and yet we didnt." The loss was the second straight for the Leafs, who wrap up a three-game road trip in Winnipeg on Saturday. Five Points 1. The meltdown began only 40 seconds after Joffrey Lupul made it 3-1 with his 17th goal of the year. Aulie and partner Dion Phaneuf were on the ice in both instances. "Its just unfortunate plays," Aulie said. "First one gets chipped out [of the offensive zone] and Eric Staal – hes a quick guy so hes flying – kind of got a jump on us. Toronto FCs worst ever start to a season now stands at six straight defeats after Saturdays 3-2 loss to Chicago Fire and has Tom Anselmi, the Chief Operating Officer of team owners MLSE, saying "they have to get this straightened out." Presumably Anselmi was referring to Head Coach Aron Winter in his brief statement on the clubs problems Sunday, which would indicate hes not thinking about a change in management just yet. But "straightening things out" is not a quick fix, and its unclear how long Anselmi will be able to stand by his man while results continue to fall well below expectations. A coaching change is one option as the club looks to snap out of its slump. Its a situation that seemed highly unlikely just six weeks ago when Toronto appeared in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League after a surprise win over LA Galaxy in the quarters. When Torontos new management team was appointed in January 2011, Winter spoke of having a three-year plan. Patience and stability were two of the key words used then, and if the club is to maintain that belief, then that also has to be the mantra for the organization now. But this isnt an ideal world. With each defeat the stands get emptier and the Playoff chances look even more distant. Winter talked on Saturday about needing time to get things right and said progress has been made since a year ago even though results dont show it. However, the numbers dont make pretty reading. Aside from the fact that the club has lost six straight with four of those games against clubs that didnt make the MLS Playoffs last year, their defensive record has been shocking. The club conceded a league record 59 goals last year and has already let in 13 through their opening six matches. At this pace, theyre on track to set a new record this time around. In three of their six matches, the Reds have conceded three goals. When questioned in the post-match press conference about the defence, Winter defended his decision to play a back three and pointed to individual mistakes as the reason for the latest defeat. He was highly critical of the quality available to him and stated simply "defensively we need better players." Of course, hes not wrong - but that was exactly the same problem that the club had last year. I said heading into the season that I believed they are one quality defender away from challenging for the playoffs. Im certainly not the only person to voice that, but as long as the situation goes unaddressed, the team will likely continue to fall short. Winter believed he had solved the defensive issue with the arrivals of Geovanny Caicedo and Miguel Aceval. Caicedo didnt even make the start of the season, and Aceval hasnt shown he can be the answer, so Toronto FC finds itself with familiar problems. If the MLSE board decides Winter should be given the time to try and turn the situation around, he must bolster the defence, even if it means losing a key piece from elsewhere in the team. As the Technical Director and Head Coach, Winter is responsible for assembling a team that can compete and so far he has been unable to find the answer at the back. It has been a learning process for the Dutchman. It was always going to be that way as he embarked on his first head coaching job in a completely new league, and the teams owners knew that would be the case when he was appointed. Its not easy dealing with a salary cap, and injuries to key players, but there have already been wholesale changes to personnel without the required improvement in defence. 26 players were signed in 2011 including defenders Dicoy Williams, Eddy Viator, Andy Iro, Kyle Davies, Danleigh Borman, Mikael Yourassowsky and Dasan Robinson. Further additions came this season with Aceval and Caicedo signed along with squad players such as Logan Emory and Aaron Maund. Six games into the 2012 season, its clear Toronto FCs squad isnt good enough to play the way Aron Winter wants. Whether they would look better in a 4-4-2 is another debate, but I do think that is an option that could be explored in a bid to change things around. With a front two of Danny Koevermans and Ryan Johnson, Toronto FC could pose problems for defences in MLS. If they played Torsten Frings and Julian de Guzman in the centre of midfield and used two wingers such as Joao Plata and Reggie Lambe, they could be solid through the middle of the pitch while providing service to the attackers from the wings. If Winter isnt able to sufficiently change the personnel at this stage, a different way of playing may be their only solution. After two straight defeats it was an important result for Martin Rennies side as they picked up their third win of the season and moved onto 11 points from their first seven games. Keeping up that pace would give them an excellent chance of securing a playoff place come the end of the year. MALMO, SWEDEN – Santa Claus paid a visit to Team Canadas Christmas Eve dinner on Tuesday evening at Örenäs Castle, about a 40-minute drive outside Malmo where this years World Junior Hockey Championship is being held. And the big guy in red came armed with gifts and scouting reports. He called up the players one at a time and offered a quick hockey-related message. "That was quite the shot you had last game," Santa bellowed when Connor McDavid was on his lap, "Shoot, shoot, shoot." McDavid did notch two assists in his world junior debut, but that first goal is proving elusive. "I missed a whole bunch of chances that Im pretty embarrassed about, but I thought I played an alright game," he said. Its something hes well aware of. "I know one of the big criticisms from other people is that I dont shoot the puck enough and Im always looking for the fancy play and the pass so I try and listen to that and I do try and shoot the puck as much as I can," McDavid said. "I just try and make the right play." McDavid, more often than not, makes the right play. For example, he found his way behind the Swiss defence on Monday and scored on a breakaway in Canadas final pre-tournament game. That was the goal Santa was talking about. "He sees the ice so well," said head coach Brent Sutter. "You look at that goal he got. After he scored, the guys were all looking at each other on the bench and asking, Where did he come from? He just knows how to play the game. Hes smart, intelligent and hes got great sense for the game, tremendous hockey sense and hes got the skill-set to go with it." "There was just a quick turnover," McDavid recalled, "and I saw Mantha had the puck there and everyone kind of jumped forward on their team so I just kind of took a step to the offensive side, which I shouldnt be doing too much, but it worked out, I guess." That hockey sense, that ability to know what moment to strike, thats a key reason why McDavid is seen as the slam-dunk choice to go first overall in the 2015 NHL draft. And thats why any critique of his game at this moment in time – when hes just become the sixth 16-year-old to ever make the Canadian world junior team – seems ridiculously nitpicky. "Its probably nitpicky for sure," agreed Sam Reinhart, when asked if his linemate needs to shoot more. "Hes a great player. How does he have so many goals if he doesnt shoot? Thats my question." When he left for Canadas selection camp, McDavid was eighth in Ontario Hockey League scoring and third on the Erie Otters with 12 goals and 50 points in 31 games. He helped Canada win gold at the 2013 World Under-18 Championship, leading all scorers with eight goals and 14 points in just seven games. Reinhart and McDavid also played together at the under-18 level and formed instant chemistry. That chemistry has carried over to the under-20 level, even though McDavid has been shifted to left wing. ATLANTA -- The Arizona Diamondbacks placed Daniel Hudson on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a right elbow injury that could lead to season-ending surgery. Manager Kirk Gibson said an MRI exam Wednesday in Phoenix showed a tear in Hudsons ulnar collateral ligament. Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery is a possibility, but Gibson said Hudson could seek a second opinion. "He just got the news. Let him sort it out," Gibson said. Hudson left Tuesday nights game with the injury and revealed for the first time he had discomfort in the elbow earlier this season. (CCA) - One of the finest front-end players in curling history has passed away. Neil Harrison, a two-time world champion with skip Ed Werenich (1983 as the lead, 1990 as the alternate), died early Monday at the age of 64. In his prime, he was one of the games best leads, and was a trailblazer for front-enders who specialized in the positions. He earned six Brier Purple Hearts, representing Ontario, and was elected to the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1991. "Hell be greatly missed, obviously," said fellow Hall-of-Famer Russ Howard, who played against Harrison for many years in Ontario, and played two seasons with him in the late 1990s. "I truly believe he was the first of the guys in the modern era of curling to say that he was going to perfect his position. It used to be that your lead was your worst curler, where you put your weak link. But he was so good - he made a positive difference on every team he played for." DETROIT -- Nicklas Lidstrom has a chance to ponder his future much sooner than he wanted. Lidstroms 20th NHL season ended Friday night when Nashville eliminated the Detroit Red Wings with a 2-1 victory in Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round series. The four-time Stanley Cup champion and seven-time Norris Trophy winner turns 42 this month. The defenceman didnt have a point this post-season, but he played a team-high 118 minutes in the post-season. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland and coach Mike Babcock are hoping Lidstrom returns, but the Swedish star isnt even ready to talk about it. "Im going to take a few weeks," Lidstrom said. "Im sure Kenny wants to sit down and go over things as well. Ill see what he wants to do and what timetable hell give me for me to make a decision." Lidstrom played in 70 games, missing more time because of injury than he ever has in his career. The Red Wings got knocked in the opening round for the first time since 2006 and havent gotten past the second round since 2009 when they were defending champions and lost to Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals. Lidstrom, though, insisted his health and the teams apparent decline are not making him lean toward retirement or returning for perhaps another $6 million, one-year contract.
