TAMPA, Fla. - Carlos Beltran is excited to play alongside Derek Jeter on the New York Yankees. "I know he has a lot of championships, but I have none," Beltran said. "Hopefully I can win one." Now 36 and still in search of his first World Series title, Beltran left the St. Louis Cardinals for a $45 million, three-year deal with the Yankees, his sixth major league team in 17 seasons. Beltran hit .296 last season with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs, reaching the World Series for the first time. Now hes on a team that expects to be in the World Series every year. "Of course we have to win," the eight-time All-Star outfielder said Monday after his first workout at the teams minor league complex. "I dont know how far we will go, but at least we have to do something positive, and better than what they did last year, no doubt about that." After missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years, New York embarked on a spending spree of nearly half-a-billion dollars, adding four marquee free agents in Beltran, Masahiro Tanaka, Brian McCann and Jacoby Ellsbury. "They went out and spent a lot money on players to try to improve the ballclub," Beltran said. "You want to be around an organization like that, where every year theyre trying to improve, theyre trying to get better." Second baseman Robinson Cano — the Yankees top hitter — did leave for a $240 million, 10-year deal with Seattle, while Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte both retired. "I think we have a real good team," Beltran said. "I believe the lineup that we have, we have a pretty good lineup." Beltran joined Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson and Eduardo Nunez three days before the first full-squad workout. After batting practice, instead of taking fly balls, Beltran fielded grounders at second with Roberts, signed as Canos replacement. "Im just trying to get to know the guys," Beltran said. "I was talking to Roberts a little bit there. Hes a switch-hitter. Im a switch-hitter. So, we were talking about, maybe, working together a little bit this year." Beltran did not get a chance to work out with Jeter, who announced last week that he will retire after the 2014 season. The Yankees captain, who has been practicing at the minor league complex for past four weeks, usually takes a few days off before formal workouts begin. "For me, hes been a big part of baseball," Beltran said. "I feel personally, he got enough of baseball. Hes been doing this so long, and doing it the right way. Hes a pro on, off the field. Its sad for baseball, youre going to lose a guy like that, but at the same time theres a lot of younger guys coming up that, hopefully, they could take his spot." "Being able to play with a guy that is a Hall of Famer, first-ballot Hall of Famer, is a great feeling," Beltran added. "Im just looking forward to playing with him, looking forward to hopefully have this team win a championship." NOTES: Manager Joe Girardi wouldnt go into detail on any problem the Yankees had with Canos lack of hustle at times. Hitting coach Kevin Long was quoted in Mondays editions of the New York Daily News as saying "If somebody told me I was a dog, Id have to fix that. When you choose not to, you leave yourself open to taking heat, and thats your fault. For whatever reason, Robbie chose not to." Girardi pulled Cano from a game against Tampa Bay in September 2008 when he was late retrieving Cliff Floyds hard grounder that caromed into shallow right field, then benched the second baseman the following night. "I have discussions with all of our players on how we expect them to play the game," Girardi said. ... Girardi also said RHP Michael Pineda, sidelined since shoulder surgery two years ago, looked good in his bullpen session Monday. Pineda is among the candidates for the No. 5 starter. ... RHP Yoshinori Tateyama, his arrival delayed by a visa issue, began workouts after missing two days. Bulldogs Dawgs Red Pride Fashion Stitched NCAA Jersey . Juan Martin del Potro denied Federer his hometown Swiss Indoors title for the second straight year, winning the final 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-4 on Sunday.Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Asiatas third touchdown of the game led the Minnesota Vikings to a 29-26 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Asiata finished the game with just 26 yards on 10 carries and also converted a two-point attempt. Teddy Bridgewater went 26-for-42 for 268 yards with a touchdown for the Vikings (4-5), who head into their bye week having won two straight games. It was a great team victory today and Im really proud of the ways the guys fought, said Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer. I feel like our team really grew up today in a lot of ways. We went down a couple of times, and kept fighting and fighting and it paid off. Robert Griffin III returned to play for the first time since Week 2 and was 18-for-28 for 251 yards with one touchdown and an interception for the Redskins (3-6), who had won their previous two games. I was not good enough to win and thats all that matters, said Griffin. We lost the game. Guys fought really hard. I have to play better. Washington had gone on top on Alfred Morris second score of the game with just over nine minutes to play, but Minnesota answered to again take the lead. Facing a 3rd-and-10, Bridgewater and Jarius Wright got together for a 21-yard connection to the Washington 36. Bridgewater converted another third down with a completion to Greg Jennings for a 1st-and-goal at the 4, and Asiata punched it in three plays later. Asiata also ran in the two-point conversion for a 29-26 lead with 3:27 to play. Washingtons bid to either tie the game or go ahead fell short as Griffins pass on 4th-and-6 was incomplete and Washington was able to kill off most of the remainder of the clock. Griffin had been out with a dislocated ankle, but we was able to show off his athleticism on Washingtons first drive. Facing a 3rd-and-7, Griffin escaped two potential sackers before hitting Roy Helu for a short pass that turned into a 24-yard gain. Kai Forbath made a 36- yard field goal to polish off the 13-play, 62-yard drive and give the Redskins a 3-0 lead with just over six minutes to play in the first. Overall I think Robert came in and competed, said Washington head coach Jay Gruden. I think he gave us a good chance to win. Minnesotas next touch saw Bridgewater miss a wide open Cordarrelle Patterson on a deep pass and the team eventually had to punt. It was all Morris on Washingtons next possession as his first three carries went for 27 yards down to the Minnessota 19.dddddddddddd Griffins next two passes fell incomplete, but the team got a fresh set of downs thanks to an illegal contact penalty. The next snap saw Morris take a handoff around the right tackle and in on a 14-yard score for a 10-0 lead early in the second. The next several drives all ended in punts and the Vikings failed on a 4th- and-2 at the Washington 39 late in the half. However, the Vikings defense came up with a big play as Captain Munnerlyn picked off Griffin to get the ball back for his team near midfield. The first play of the ensuing drive saw Bridgewater and Jennings get together for 22 yards down to the Washington 24. Two plays later, Bridgewater found Chase Ford alone in the end zone for a 20-yard score to make it a 10-7 game going into the break. Minnesota went on top on its first touch of the second half as it started with the ball near midfield and a 15-yard catch by Jerick McKinnon coupled with a roughing the passer call on Washington got the ball down to the 25. After McKinnon had runs of 15 and nine yards, Asiata punched it in from a yard out for a 14-10 lead just over four minutes into the third. The Redskins came right back, though, to take the lead. Griffin converted a 3rd-and-4 with a 17-yard pass to Jordan Reed. Facing another third down, Griffins run fell short, but an unnecessary roughness call on Harrison Smith gave Washington a fresh set of downs and the ball at the Minnesota 13. The next snap saw Griffin hit DeSean Jackson in the end zone for a 17-14 lead. Washington tacked on to its lead on its next touch, as Forbath hit a 26-yard field goal to cap a nine-play, 43-yard drive for a 20-14 lead with under two minutes to play in the third. Minnesota came right back as the team moved 76 yards over 10 plays, with Asiata finishing off the drive on a 7-yard run for a 21-20 lead just two minutes into the fourth quarter. Griffin hit Jackson down the right sideline for 56 yards to help set up Morris 2-yard score with 9:01 to play. The two-point conversion, though, failed and it was a 26-21 contest. Game Notes Morris totaled 92 yards on 19 carries, and Jackson had four catches for 120 yards ... Jennings led Minnesotas receivers with six catches for 76 yards ... Washington hosts Tampa Bay in two weeks ... Minnesota plays at Chicago following the bye ... WINNIPEG -- Maurice Leggett may be a CFL rookie, but hes been around professional football since 2008. Thats long enough to have played in a lot of different schemes, and he says he likes the feel of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers new-look defence. "Its fun to me, its like Hey, look what I can do now," the member of Winnipegs secondary said after practice Tuesday. "Its a fun defence. The best way to play is having fun." The bible according to defensive co-ordinator Gary Etcheverry is know what your neighbour does and be prepared to do it yourself, whenever and wherever necessary. "I have to learn the entire defence just in case something happens, or I have to direct someone that doesnt know what to do as well as I know the defence," said Leggett, who could be returning to the lineup in Vancouver Friday, after being out with an ankle injury since July 3. Hes healthy again at the right time, with a question mark hanging over an injured Johnny Sears for Fridays tilt against the surging B.C. Lions. "He seems like a pretty smart football player," said head coach Mike OShea. "Hes smooth, smooth, smooth out there. Hes competitive. He can do a bunch of different things. We were pretty happy with Moe Leggett from the get-go so its not a stretch to see him in there." OShea says his versatility is exactly what the Bombers want. "These guys got to know the goal is, by some point during the season, they know everything about every position," OShea said. "Thats how they meet, thats how they talk." The other side to Etcheverrys defence is dictate the play with a healthy side of unpredictability. Its not quite freelance, said Leggett. "You have a structure to it but the structure is communication more than anything. . . Were not there yet completely but were on the verge of making a lot of progress." At five-foot-eleven and 186 pounds, Leggett came to the Bombers from the Arena Football League, after stints with Kansas City and Detroit in the NFL. Signed by the Chiefs in 2008, Leggett won the Mack Lee Hill Award as the teams top rookie, the first undrafted player to win the award. He started eight games for Kansas City but was injured in 2009 and 2010 and attended Lions training camp in 2011. Promising young players like Leggett made it easier for the Bombers to release high-profile singing Korey Banks earlier this month. Meanwhile, OShea says while Sears remains a maybe, defensive end Jason Vega definitely wont be playing the Lions. Winnipegs defence held but their offence stumbled against the Edmonton Eskimos last week. OShea says they need to improve communication on the offensive line but he is confident that will be addressed in Vancouver. "What do we need to fix? The mistakes," he said with a laugh. The Bombers are still deciding whether receiver Aaron Kelly will be back in the lineup Friday. Defensively, there were more than a few missed tackles last week as Edmonton quarterback Mike Reilly racked up close to 100 yards on the ground, but the Bombers held the Eskimos to just one offensive touchdown in the 26-3 loss. It was their first loss this season and they head to B.C. at 3-1, while the improved Lions (2-2), are coming off a 41-5 drubbing of the Montreal Alouettes last week, their second win in a row. He did it again on Wednesday night. The 36-year-old Ginobili scored 11 of his 24 points in the final four-plus minutes, and the Spurs snapped the Suns five-game winning streak with a 108-101 victory. Phoenixs Channing Frye said hes seen Ginobili do this sort of thing "a trillion times." "Its like a bad nightmare," he said. "Hes absolutely amazing. He just does a good job of continuing to push. I thought he was getting tired there at the end. Obviously, I was wrong." Tim Duncan added 17 points and 13 rebounds and Kawhi Leonard scored 14 for the Spurs, who played without point guard Tony Parker after he bruised a shin in Monday nights loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles. Frye scored 15 of his 22 points in the first quarter. Goran Dragic had 18 points and Eric Bledsoe 15, but the two Phoenix guards were a combined 12 of 33 from the field. Miles Plumlee added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Led by Ginobili, the Spurs outscored the Suns 15-6 over the final 4:11 after Phoenix used a 10-0 run to take a 95-93 lead on Plumlees rebound basket with 5:10 to go. "These guys are a good team," Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek said, praising San Antonios resiliency. "It doesnt matter if guys are out of the lineup." Ginobili had a tying tip-in, and then made a 3-pointer to put San Antonio ahead for good at 98-95 with 2:58 to play. San Antonio put it out of reach when Ginobili sank a 10-footer from the baseline, and then stole the ball at the other end and made two free throws to make it 104-97 with 47.5 seconds remaining. "Down the stretch I thought we did look like a veteran team," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. Ginobili, who also had seven assissts, six rebounds and five turnovers, gave himself a so-so grade.dddddddddddd. "I played pretty well," he said. "I turned the ball over too much but in general the minutes I played I scored well and I moved the ball. I think I did OK. Im very happy that I helped the team win because we are in a tough stretch. We lost the last one, we have a tough back-to-back without Tony and then Oklahoma City." Parker will miss Thursday nights game at Golden State and its uncertain whether he will be able to play when the Spurs host the Thunder on Saturday. Leonards 3-pointer gave San Antonio its first lead at 46-45. There were five lead changes the rest of the first half, with San Antonio up 59-58 at the break. With 4 seconds left in the third, Dragic was fouled while heaving a shot from just past midcourt and Popovich drew a technical complaining about the call. That gave Dragic four free throws. He made three to cut San Antonios lead to 87-81 entering the fourth quarter. Consecutive baskets by Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills put San Antonio ahead 93-85 with 8:30 to go before Markieff Morris three-point play ignited the Suns 10-0 run. "We know that we can play well against good teams," Dragic said. "We are a young team and we have to learn a lot, especially in these types of games where, in the last three or four minutes, you have to close out the game, and I think we can get there." NOTES: Parker has returned to San Antonio for treatment. ... San Antonio has not lost two in a row this season. ... Popovich is the only NBA coach whose tenure dates to Hornaceks playing days. ... Bledsoe was 1-for-8 shooting in the fourth quarter. ... Entering the game, Duncans career minutes (42,064) were 37 more than the 13 players on Phoenixs active roster combined. ... San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Richard Sherman came up big once again against the San Francisco 49ers, with his two interceptions highlighting Seattles strong defensive effort for a 19-3 victory in a highly-anticipated NFC West Thanksgiving clash. The outspoken cornerback, whose key defensive stop against San Francisco receiver Michael Crabtree in Januarys NFC Championship Game helped vault the Seahawks into the Super Bowl, picked off Colin Kaepernick twice as Seattle (8-4) limited the 49ers offense to just 164 total yards. Russell Wilson completed 15-of-22 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown pass to Robert Turbin, Marshawn Lynch ran for 104 yards on 20 carries and Steven Hauschka kicked five field goals for the Seahawks, who have won five of their last six games. WINNIPEG -- If a labour dispute does derail the start of the CFL season, new Winnipeg Blue Bomber quarterback Drew Willy says hes "100 per cent behind the players" and knows just what to do. He was with the New York Jets in 2011 when the NFL locked out their players after they failed to agree on a new contract. Willy went undrafted but was given a look by four NFL teams before heading north. "If there was something to happen, Id make sure we were getting the guys together in Winnipeg . . . getting our work in, obviously not in the building but somewhere around Winnipeg," he said Wednesday as the Blue Bombers rookie camp got under way. Thats what quarterback Mark Sanchez did with the Jets during the four-month NFL lockout in 2011. "Whoevers in the area, well make sure we get all the leaders, a lot of guys that are in the area." Not that Willy, 27, is looking forward to running a makeshift camp as he prepares to take the field for the first time as a starting quarterback in the CFL, after spending two seasons as a backup with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "Being a first-time starter, I need all the reps I can get but also I understand it is a business and I back the players," he said. Things still remained very much up in the air Wednesday as the clock ticked down and talks resumed. The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players ends Thursday at midnight ET, and a possible strike looms before the start of main camp Sunday. Willy said he was looking forward to throwing his first passes as a Blue Bomber on Investors Group Field as rookie camp got rolling Wednesday evening. "Quarterbacks, we dont get hit in practice, so Ive always loved practice." He had already spent a couple of days in the teams quarterback school with the Bombers other three pivots, Robert Marve, Brian Brohm and Max Hall, the only active quarterback from last season the team elected to keep on their roster. Brohm was signed last season but went straight to the injured list. Hall took over mid-season and finished as Winnipegs most consistent quarterback in 2013, starting nine of Winnipegs 12 final games. But the team still floundered and finished at 3-15 in the CFL cellar. Offensive co-ordinator Marcel Bellefeuille is also back after taking over last August when Gary Crowton was sacked, and he has been putting the teams quarterbacks though their paces. "We pretty much started with what coach Bellefeuille expects from us as a unit, as individuals. Just mentally doing the right things, watching a lot of film," said Willy. "You get towards the installation period where we put in different aspects of the offence." The one good thing that came out of last season was the ability to pick second in the CFL draft (behind expansion Ottawa, which traded its pick to Calgary), and the Bombers also announced Wednesday that they had signed their top 2014 pick, offensive lineman Matthias Goossen. The team is hoping Goossen might even be able to start this season, perhaps at centre. The six-foot-four, 294-pound lineman was a conference all-star the past two seasons at Simon Fraser and was also on the world team that defeated the U.S. for the first time ever at the 2012 IFAF International Bowl. After his first practice Wednesday, Goossen said it was exciting, tiring and also the first time the Vancouver-area native has lived away from home. Hes bunking in a University of Manitoba dorm. "You only have one first practice and it was a lot of fun, very fast and very physical," he said after lining up at centre, although he said he isnt necessarily counting on winning that spot. "Im just trying to do my best every day. Im going to try and get better and contribute to the team in any way possible." Coach Mike OShea was happy Goossen made it for the start of camp and sounded a lot more positive about his chances. "We drafted him at that spot for a reason because we like him a lot," said OShea. "Hes going to be just fine." The Bombers are hanging a lot on Willys shoulders as they prepare for their second season in a new $200-million-plus stadium that carries a hefty mortgage they must pay. But Willy isnt short on confidence. "Ive been around some good coaches and players. I just need to take everything Ive learned here and there, put it all together and go out there," he said. PHILADELPHIA - The family of the late NFL star Junior Seau plans to object to the proposed US$765 million settlement of player concussion claims because the fund would not pay wrongful death claims to survivors. Although the players lawsuits accused the NFL of concealing known concussion risks, there would be no blame assessed as part of the settlement, and no punitive damages for pain and suffering. "Mr. Seaus children have their own claims for the wrong the NFL did to them. His children are not suing for their fathers pain and suffering, they are suing for their own," lawyer Steven M. Strauss wrote in a court filing Friday that signalled the familys intent to pursue an individual lawsuit. Other potential critics to the settlement reached by players lawyers and the league are also starting to emerge — and the judge overseeing the case has herself expressed doubts the sum is big enough. About 50 plaintiffs lawyers met in New York last week to learn more about the settlement from the lead lawyers, but some left dissatisfied. "This could be a great settlement, this could be a terrible settlement, but I dont know," said Chicago lawyer Thomas A. Demetrio, who represents 10 players, including the family of the late Dave Duerson, a four-time Pro Bowler who mostly played with the Chicago Bears. Duerson fatally shot himself in the chest, leaving his brain intact for autopsy. Like Seau, he was diagnosed with CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy. An honours graduate and trustee of the University of Notre Dame, he was 50 when he died, which would factor into his familys payout. "His estate will receive $2.2 million. Thats not adequate," Demetrio said. U.S. District Judge Anita Brody, who must weigh the deal, also wants more actuarial details than filed with the settlement papers. She preliminarily rejected the plan last month, questioning whether $765 million will be enough to fund about 20,000 claims involved for 65 years, as promised. The architects of the plan argue that the players could end up with nothing if the lawsuits are thrown out of court. The NFL had argued that the claims belonged in arbitration. The retirees would also have to prove their injuries came from NFL concussions, and not those suffered earlier. "The retired player community has provided overwhelming support for this agreement, and we look forward to finalizing it soon so they can begin taking advantage of its benefits," lead lawyers Christopher Seeger and Sol Weiss said in a statement Monday that recognized the work of other lawyers on the case. The NFL settlement, if approved in court, would be capped at $4 million on behalf of players diagnosed after their deaths with traumatic brain injury. The payments could go as high as $5 million for younger men with Alzheimers disease, but many more plaintiffs with mild dementia would get $25,000 or less under the deal. Demetrio wants to know how much of the NFLs payment will come from insurance, and why the lawyers would split another $112 million, when the case did not reach discovery or trial. The NFLs annual revenues top $9 billion. "Its very, very unusual ... for all the plaintiffs to not know whats going on," Demetrio said. "Theyre acting like the Lone Ranger." The Seau Family, meanwhile, is also concerned that the deal calls for a stay on individual suits until all appeals are finalized with the settlement. "Junior Seaus children could be forced to wait years for justice, while the NFL continues to make billions of dollars and the memories of witnesses grow ever more distant," the filing said. The NFL, which on Monday joined two U.S. lawmakers in pushing for legislation to help protect student athletes from concussions, declined comment Monday on the Seau familys objections. LAS VEGAS -- Dutch heavyweight Stefan (Skyscraper) Struve, slated to make a comeback Saturday after a heart scare, was scratched from his UFC 175 bout with Matt Mitrione after blacking out while warming up. "Stefan Struve suffered a non-life-threatening, near-fainting spell backstage," the UFC said in a statement during the fight card. "Afterwards, the medical team did not feel he was fit to compete. With his health and safety in mind, hes been removed from the card and is currently under the care of the medical staff." After the card, UFC president Dana White said Struve was "doing great" and had been cleared by doctors. "He had something like a panic attack," he told the post-fight news conference. "He almost blacked out, he started hyper-ventilating, his blood pressure dropped. I dont know, just one of those weird things." White said Struve had to ponder his fighting future. "He needs to do some soul-searching. Hes a super-talented guy. Hes a great guy, we love the guy. I dont know, well see where he goes from here." Struve, meanwhile, tweeted he was fine. "Just want to let everybody know Im OK, had a blackout in the locker room and we had to call the fight off, thanks for the love folks!" White said both Struve and Mitrione would get their basic purse. "I found out what happened and went to talk to Stefan," Mitrione said in a statement. "He was still in his chair and was very apologetic. Hes such a competitor. Obviously health and safety come ffirst.dddddddddddd" The six-foot-11 Struves MMA career appeared over last year when he was diagnosed with a rare heart condition. Given the OK to resume fighting by his doctors in the Netherlands and the UFCs cardiologist, Struve (29-6) was looking forward to returning to the cage. Struve was also cleared by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. "It looks good," Struve said in a pre-fight interview, "I just need to do checkups two times a year with my doctors in Holland and two times a year with my doctors in L.A. "Thats no problem for me. I actually like that I know for sure that my heart is healthy." The 26-year-old Struve, ranked 12th among heavyweight contenders, last fought in March 2013 when he suffered a broken jaw in a knockout loss to hard-hitting Mark Hunt in Japan. He returned to training some three months later. But he blacked out briefly while at his parents home and went to hospital to be checked out. A stress ultrasound test, which uses high frequency sound waves to examine the hearts anatomy and function, found the heart issue. Struve was diagnosed with a leaking aortic valve, as well an enlarged heart. It meant that his heart was only pumping 60 per cent of his blood into the aorta and then the rest of his body. The remaining 40 per cent was ending up back in the heart chamber. Doctors used medication to control his blood pressure and the demands on his heart. Struve says he will probably have to undergo surgery at some point but hopes to do it after his fighting career. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys Danny Rose Jersey ' ' '

LaFontaine, the teams new president of hockey operations, announced a significant roster shuffle on Tuesday, when the Sabres demoted four rookies before their home game against St. Louis. Veteran defenceman Mike Weber also was activated from injured reserve after missing 10 games with a thumb injury and is expected to play against the Blues. Defenceman Nikita Zadorov was returned to his Canadian Junior team, the Ontario Hockey League London Knights. The move was made before Zadorov played his 10th NHL game, which is when his three-year contract would come into effect. Drafted 16th overall in June, Zadorov had a goal in seven games in Buffalo. Fellow 2013 first-round pick, defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen, and forward Johan Larsson were assigned to the Sabres AHL affiliate in Rochester, N.Y. Center Mikhail Grigorenko is also heading to Rochester but on a conditioning assignment. That move gives the Sabres two weeks to determine whether to recall Grigoreenko or send him to his junior team in Quebec.dddddddddddd Grigorenko has struggled finding a niche in Buffalo since being selected in the first round of the 2012 draft. After making the Sabres roster to start last season, Grigorenko was returned to Quebec in March. He made the Sabres once again this season, but has lacked playing time. Grigorenko has missed five of the past seven games and has two goals and an assist in 15 games this season. The demotions mark a significant shift in philosophy under LaFontaine and interim coach Ted Nolan. The two took over after general manager Darcy Regier and coach Ron Rolston were fired last week after the Sabres got off to a franchise-worst 4-15-1 start. Regier made it clear that he was intent on rebuilding the Sabres through younger players, no matter the teams record. On Tuesday, Nolan said the Sabres intend to fill the open roster spots later this week by recalling players from Rochester. One potential candidate is veteran forward Patrick Kaleta, who was assigned to Rochester after being waived by the Sabres two weeks ago. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys Danny Rose Jersey ' ' '

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Nets acquired Gerald Wallace from the Portland Trail Blazers for two injured players and a protected first-round draft pick. The Nets sent centre Mehmet Okur and forward Shawne Williams to Portland along with their own 2012 draft pick, which is protected if it is in the top three. "You never want to trade a pick, but you look at the pick and the potential and what you may get there, but after meeting with our scouts, we felt the player we might draft beyond the protection, would be somebody that would probably take a couple of years," King said. "Were trying to speed the process up a bit and start winning a little further rather than continuing to rebuild." The 29-year-old Wallace gives the Nets a versatile, tough player who can defend at the small forward position against the likes of Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James. An All Star in 2010, Wallace averaged 13.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in 42 starts in Portland. The trade came hours after the Nets learned that Orlando Magic centre Dwight Howard signed papers Thursday agreeing to waive the early termination option in his contract. It guaranteed that he will be with the team at the beginning of the 2012-13 season, ending any hopes -- for now -- that the Nets might be able to acquire him to be the showcase when the team moves to Brooklyn, N.Y. next season. King refused to say when he learned about Howards decision. He understood that Nets fans might be upset. However, he said he was satisfied adding another piece while maintaining $8 million in cap space for free agency this summer. He also noted New Jersey had Houstons first-round pick so it will still be involved in the draft. Howard had requested to be traded earlier this year and said the Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks were on his wish list. The Nets felt they had the inside track because they had plenty of cap room and Howard is close friends with Deron Williams, New Jerseys All-Star point guard. "We were involved in a lot of things, some things didnt work out, but the thing we did, did," King said. "I am always one who has the glass half full. Were moving on. We have a starting small forward who is a great fit for us, and thats all I can focus on." It is not clear whether Williams will stay with the Nets after this season or opt out of his contract. "I cant speak for Deron, so I wont try," said King, who spoke with Williams before getting on a conference call Thursday night. Okur has been sidelined since Jan. 27 with a sore lower back. His value is that his contract, worth $10.9 million, will expire after this season. Williams is out for the year after having surgery on his left foot in early February. He has a year left on a contract that will pay him $3.2 million next season. Wallace can opt out of his contract after this season but King said he was not concerned. Williams (strained calf) and centre Brook Lopez (sprained ankle) are currently sidelined, but when they return, the Nets should have a solid starting lineup with Wallace at small forward, Kris Humphries at power forward and rookie MarShon Brooks at shooting guard. New Jersey (15-29) has the sixth worst record in the league entering Thursdays action and it probably will be part of the draft lottery, meaning it has a chance to get one of the top three picks. King said the Nets also made the deal because in the weak Eastern Conference, they are still within striking distance of a playoff berth with a favourable schedule. Wallace is expected to meet with Nets officials in New Jersey on Friday. The team will be in Orlando to face Howard and the Magic. Comprar Asics Noosa Tri 9 Mujer . MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Memphis Grizzlies sprinted past the Phoenix Suns and closer to home-court advantage in the playoffs. Rudy Gay scored a season-high 32 points and the Grizzlies won their fourth straight with a 104-93 victory over the Suns on Wednesday night. Memphis outscored the Suns 17-6 after Phoenix tied the game at 87 with 6:27 left. Dante Cunningham had six of his 10 points during the stretch run. "I was just flashing to the open areas, trying to be an open body when my man doubled," Cunningham said. "Its all about weathering the run, then putting together your own run, then finishing and closing the game out." The victory, coupled with the Los Angeles Clippers 100-98 win at Oklahoma City, left the Grizzlies a half-game behind the Clippers for the fourth seed and home-court advantage in the Western Conference playoffs. The Suns two-game winning streak was snapped. They dropped a spot to 10th in the Western Conference as Utah, with its 103-91 victory at Houston, jumped over Phoenix into the ninth spot. "We really have to focus on getting every win possible and not worry about the standings," said Suns reserve forward Josh Childress. "When the season is over, see where we stand. We cant be playing for that seed. Weve got to be playing to win every game."Zach Randolph had 17 points and nine rebounds for Memphis, which won for the ninth time in the last 11 games. O.J. Mayo finished with 15 points, and Mike Conley had 12 points and seven assists. Marcin Gortat had 19 points for Phoenix on 9 of 12 from the floor, while Shannon Brown scored 18. Rookie Markieff Morris had 17 for Phoenix, and Steve Nash had 11 points and 10 assists. But it was the stretch run that hurt the Suns. Phoenix had opened the fourth quarter with an 11-1 burst as Memphis missed its first four shots. The rally gave the Suns an 83-81 lead. The game settled into a series of lead changes and ties, the final one coming on a drive by Sebastian Telfair, knotting the score at 87 with 6:27 left. Memphis then scored six straight points, part of a 13-4 run to take the lead to 100-91. A key down the stretch was Memphis grabbing three offensive rebounds, keeping the ball from the Suns and leaving Phoenix on defence when it trailed. "Weve got to do a better job of finishing games, especially on the road," Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said. "We play hard and put ourselves in a position to have an opportunity to win a game, and you just have to finish it. "We did a poor job of executing the last 3 minutes of the game, and thats where the game was won." Memphis led 59-53 in a first half that saw very little defence for either team. Both teeams were shooting 59 per cent at the half, each hitting 24 of their 41 shots.dddddddddddd Both teams were above 60 per cent until the final minute of the half. "The key thing is making sure you dont get into their style of play and forget to play defence," Mayo said of the Suns. "The first half was kind of like that. In the second half, we knew that we could get stops and continue scoring." The Suns relied on the inside presence of Gortat, who had 15 points in the half, missing only one of his eight shots. Childress was perfect on his five shots in the half for all of his 10 points in the game, and Phoenix had 42 points in the paint. Gay led Memphis with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while Randolph had 13 points. "It was one of those things where I had it going and nobody else was really scoring, so I felt I had to be aggressive offensively," Gay said. "I just tried to make the best plays possible to help the team, stay within our offence and get what I can out of it." Memphis grabbed the first double-digit lead of the game early in the second half after a pair of technical fouls, one on Nash for a no-call, another on Brown during a scrum for position on an inbounds pass, contributed to a 65-55 lead. The Suns whittled it to 70-67 before Memphis rebuilt the advantage to 80-72 heading to the fourth. Then Phoenix opened the fourth quarter with a burst, retaking the lead before faltering at the end. "We played solid defence, we just have to come up with those rebounds, and I was a culprit of it," Childress said. "We cant short-change ourselves if we play as hard as we did and not get those rebounds." After the Suns dominance inside in the first half, Phoenix managed to outscore Memphis in the paint by 56-54. The teams couldnt keep the first-half shooting performances. While Memphis shot 42 per cent, the Suns were limited to 37 per cent after the break. "Our activity, being in the paint, being up on the pick-and-roll, was much better," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said of the second half, later adding: "The fact that we were scoring, we stayed ahead. Then we figured out how to stop them defensively, and we expanded the lead." NOTES: The Suns missed a chance to sweep the Grizzlies for the first time since the 2007-08 season. ... Grant Hill missed his ninth game after undergoing right knee surgery on March 30. The Suns are 5-4 since the injury. ... Nashs 10 assists marked his 36th game this season with 10 or more. ... Gays point total was his first 30-point game since Dec. 26, 2010, at Indiana, when he scored 30. ... Memphis ended the night shooting 50 per cent. Im going to write in defence of Capitals RW Alex Ovechkin, if only because there have been some recent attacks and, while I can certainly live with them being directed at Ovechkin, the analytical process ought to be better, particularly if its going to be a hit piece on the leagues leading goal-scorer. Yes, Im writing to defend a player that is on pace for a 59-goal season, when the second-best goal-scorer in the NHL this season, Torontos Phil Kessel, is on pace for 43. Naturally, I didnt think that Ovechkin would be a player that needed much defending, but hes taken some hits lately. Im going to largely ignore his contributions on the power play because its not in any dispute that Ovechkin is great with the man advantage and can make a difference even when he doesnt score. On one side of the discussion, we have the Toronto Star, with their Department of Hockey Analytics, and while there are plenty of flaws in Ovechkins game, they somehow determined that his goals-for/against percentage was the way to illustrate the problem. Never mind that goals for/against percentage is essentially measuring plus-minus. Ill get to that in a moment but, first, also peruse the Hockey News piece by Ken Campbell who, after Ovechkin was minus-5 against Columbus, decided that Ovechkin has to decide what kind of player he is. After all, Ovechkin was minus-17 on the season after that game. Whats odd about using plus-minus to denigrate Ovechkins contributions is that anyone doing serious analytical work in hockey has been against using plus-minus because it involves so many factors beyond an individual players control (not least of which are the contributions of nine other skaters and two goaltenders when the game is 5-on-5) and, generally, involves small samples because goals are relatively rare events. Its funny to find myself in this position, because I can be a bit of an apologist for plus-minus. You spend enough time around the game and that thinking can be pretty common, and when the sample is large enough, you can get a pretty decent list of players at both ends of the spectrum. (For example, heres the list of players with the best cumulative plus-minus since 2000, and here are the worst.) But, Ive at least learned that there are many other factors that go into whether a player is a plus or minus player, and they must be considered if youre going to attempt to pass judgment on a single season or, especially, a portion of a season. So, lets take a look at some factors that are at play to make Alex Ovechkin a minus-17. First off, the shooting percentage of others on the ice with Ovechkin at 5-on-5 is ridiculously low. His 6.3% is only ahead of fourth-liners Aaron Volpatti and Jay Beagle among Capitals forwards. The suggestion could be made -- and of course it has been -- that Ovechkin isnt making those around him better, but here are the 5-on-5 on-ice shooting percentages when Ovechkin has been on the ice for the past five seasons: 10.36%, 8.62%, 8.05%, 11.76%, 9.09%. Youre really going to have to dig for reasons, other than poor luck and ineffective shooters, to explain even-strength shooting effectiveness declining by 40% over last season, especially when Ovechkin himself is shooting 10.6% (18 goals, 170 shots) at 5-on-5. Taking away Ovechkins 18 goals on 170 shots, leaves the other Capitals to score eight goals on 242 shots (3.3%) with Ovechkin on the ice. Marcus Johansson, his most common left winger, has one goal on 51 shots. This undeniably effects plus-minus, right? Of course it does. Give Ovechkin an average on-ice shooting percentage (say, 8%) and that is a difference of about seven goals. At the other end of the rink, Ovechkin is getting burned with a .909 save percentage at 5-on-5. Naturally, the argument will be that Ovechkins defensive play is what leads to that low percentage. Keep in mind, that percentage is well below career norms for him (.922 over the past five seasons, including this one) and ranks near the bottom on the Capitals roster. Use that typical save percentage, on 439 shots against, and that becomes a difference of 5-6 goals. So, why not take a look at where the shots are coming from with Ovechkin on the ice? According to Some Kind of Ninjas Shot Tracker, shots against the Capitals with Ovechkin on the ice at even strength, come from an average distance of 34.5 feet. In the previous five seasons, it has been 34.2, 36.6, 35.8, 34.6 and 35.9 feet on average. There can be an argument made, based on those average shot distances, that Ovechkins most effective defensive performances were in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 (the Dale Hunter season), but there really isnt a huge difference; goaltenders arent suddenly flummoxed by 34-foot shots when 36-footers are easy pickings. On top of that, best of luck trying to identify those particular seasons as anything close to Ovechkins best. Why? Because he scored 70 goals and 150 points in 157 games over those two seasons, producing the two lowest point scoring rates of his career. Yes, even lower than this season, when virtually no one else puts the puck in the net with him on the ice. Of course Ovechkin is not a defensive whiz, but that shouldnt stand as an indictment any more than it has for elite offensive players throughout the history of the game. Seriously, take a look at the Top 10 goal-scorers in the league, none of whom put the puck in the net like Ovechkin, and identify the ones that are notably strong backcheckers. Some are: Joe Pavelski, Alexander Steen, Patrick Sharp, but theres no reason to believe that right wingers Kessel or Corey Perry or Patrick Kane are doing brilliant work in the defensive end. Heres the thing: theyre all great players! Part of the trouble for Ovechkin is that the Capitals havent been able to win in the postseason, so he gets painted with the brush of failure for a whole host of team shortcomings. Thats what comes with being a superstar. This Capitals team is flawed. They rank in the bottom third of the league in Fenwick Close (measuring shot attempts, not including blocks, at even strength, with the score close), which is a good indication of team puck possession, yet Ovechkin has relatively solid possession numbers. If you want to break down a players overall contribution, and feel that you must use one statistic in order to do so (better yet, dont), then at least reduce the impact of others on the ice and look at the possession stats, because it wont matter that linemates arent finishing or that, for whatever reason, goaltenders arent stopping the puck. Shooting and save percentages fluctuate and while they affect perception -- just ask Tyler Bozak -- they dont get to the bottom of a players on-ice contribution, and so it is with Ovechkin this year, who is having a fine season, no matter what his plus-minus says. Especially on defence. Garnett and former Boston Celtics teammate Pierce had their first Brooklyn home game spoiled Saturday night as Andre Drummond 15 scored points and first-round pick Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 12 for the Detroit Pistons in a 99-88 victory on Saturday night. For the second straight game, Brooklyn had some defensive lapses inside the paint and couldnt stop the lobs that Drummond was getting at the rim. The Nets gave up 32 points in the paint after allowing 46 against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night. "What everybody has to understand still is we are obviously still a work in progress," Garnett said. "...Great game for us to learn from. We didnt pack the paint in as well as I think we can. We will get better." Kyle Singler had 11 points and rookie Tony Mitchell had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons. Most of the upper bowl seats were filled, while there were plenty of empty seats in the lower level empty as 16,331 attended the game, giving Garnett and Pierce a nice ovation when the starters were introduced. All that did was motivate Drummond and the Pistons. "We punched them in the mouth first. We didnt let them jump on us first," Drummond said. "We did our best to get after them first, try to run the floor on them, try to make them run after us." New Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks was impressed with the way his centre was active on the court, pointing out his work first-time coach Rasheed WWallace, who retired last season.dddddddddddd "Andre Drummond, in the third quarter, was running on the floor and getting those lobs," Cheeks said. "He had one or two post moves, but it wasnt something we ran for him. . Just the way he plays is amazing to watch. I think Rasheed Wallace has been doing a good job working with him." Andray Blatche led the Nets with 15 points. Nets point guard Deron Williams participated in pregame shooting drills but did not play in the teams second preseason game. He watched from the bench because of a right ankle he sprained during off-season workouts. Its the same injury that hampered him last season. After committing 24 turnovers in their preseason opener, Brooklyn had 21 against the Pistons. Nets backup point guard Tyshawn Taylor left the arena in a walking boot after he sprained his right foot, leaving Brooklyn with one healthy player at the point, the inexperienced Jorge Gutierrez, to backup Shaun Livingston while Williams heals up. "I mean hes going to be the engine thats going to drive this team at both ends of the court before we could really see how were going to reach our full potential," Pierce said of Williams. "So you know, its up to us with the guys that we have out there to continue to get better, to continue to understand what were trying to accomplish each and every night." Livingston started in Williams place, finishing with two points and seven assists. Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez played into the third quarter, while Garnett and Pierce sat out the second half. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys Danny Rose Jersey ' ' '

TORONTO -- Ken Hitchcock has a theory on how to deal with his team not scoring a lot of goals. "Just not talk about it," he said. "Talk about something else." Thats the approach the Stanley Cup-winning coach is taking with his St. Louis Blues, who have gone through a mini scoring slump. Of course they still lead the Western Conference, which is based on large part on being one of the NHLs stingiest defensive teams. "Ive always believed, like a lot of coaches, if youre not scoring, talk about checking. If you check better, youre going to get more chances," Hitchcock said Monday at Air Canada Centre. "The structure of our game, were just going to weather the storm. The structure of our game has got to stay solid like it is right now, and then well weather it and well come out on the other side fine." An 82-game regular season is a totally different animal than the Olympics, but a similar philosophy guided Team Canada to gold. Worries about a lack of offence from star forwards -- at least externally -- lasted well into the playoff round, but those were quieted by dominant play on the puck. "Its about controlling the hockey game. And you dont control the hockey game with offence, you control it with checking," said Hitchcock, who was one of Mike Babcocks assistants in Sochi. "We were tied or leading by one goal -- we werent concerned with the way we were playing that we werent scoring. It doesnt matter if youre leading 5-4 going into the third period or 1-0 as long as you have the lead youre in good shape." Like with Canada, Hitchcock said he feels comfortable seeing the Blues checking well because it means theyre "committed to the right things." One of those things hes proud of is that for a couple of games in a row St. Louis has displayed a high work standard. To Hitchcock, thats a bigger deal -- the way the Blues play -- than having an offence thats always rolling or a power play thats constantly clicking at a high rate. As far as special teams go, hes more concerned about the penalty kill and what that could mean come playoff time. "Ive seen a lot of (teams) who have had bad power plays do really well in the playoffs, but Ive never seen any team play worth a damn if you cant kill penalties," Hitchcock said. "Its more on can you kill the penalty at the right time because you can live with poor power plays and still win hockey games. But you cant survive if you cant kill penalties because your whole game falls apart, youre nervous, youre uptight, you panic and weve got to be great killing penalties." That would also follow Canadas blueprint. The gold-medal-winning Canadians converted on just 16.67 per cent of their power plays in six games, middle of the pack in the tournament, yet led the Olympics with a 93.75 per cent penalty-killing rate, giving up one goal on 16 chances. Hitchcock, though, must guide the Blues through choppier waters than Canada endured at the Olympics. Sixteen playoff victories are required to win the Stanley Cup, and most of those wont be by large margins. Perhaps thats one way the Blues balance plays in their favour. The have no one player in the top 35 in the league in scoring, but 10 with at least 30 points, led by Alex Steen and T.J. Oshies 54. St. Louis isnt built on scoring, which means they could be built to withstand droughts like this. "Youre going to go through stages where youre not scoring, and youre still going to have to win hockey games," Hitchcock said. "If youve got to win for a week or 10 days, youve got to win 1-0, 2-1, youve got to do it until you get back engaged where youre going to score again." Until then, the Blues are happy to talk about -- and execute on -- checking well and frustrating opponents in the process. And he received something equally special in return. Jeter ended a home run drought of 161 at-bats in his final regular-season game against the Angels, and the New York Yankees kept Hector Santiago winless in seven starts with a 9-2 victory on Wednesday night. Vidal Nuno (1-0) allowed a run and four hits in 6 13 innings, struck out three and retired 14 of his last 15 batters. The left-handers only other victory in seven big league starts was May 13 of last season, when he pitched five scoreless innings of three-hit ball at Cleveland in a 7-0 decision. Unless both clubs meet in the playoffs, this was Jeters swan song against the Halos, who dropped two of three in the Bronx 1 1-2 weeks ago. Jered Weaver, Albert Pujols, Mike Trout and Howie Kendrick carried a 12-foot-long pinstriped paddleboard with Jeters No. 2 and the Yankee logo to the middle of the diamond and presented it to him following a milestone-studded video tribute as the sellout crowd of 44,083 roared its approval. "That was a cool gift. I thought that was awesome. I can use that in my backyard," Jeter said with a grin. "But I dont expect something everywhere I go. I mean, this was a surprise to me. The fans have been awesome here from the first game of the series. Its something that youll remember, and I appreciate it. Ive played a lot of games here in the regular season and post-season, so I have fond memories of playing in Anaheim." It was the second time in two years that the Angels management went out of the way to honour a member of former manager Joe Torres "Core Four." Last season it was Mariano Rivera, who retired as the all-time saves leader and received a painting of himself. "Mos different from me," Jeter said. "I play every day, so I have to go out there and play (after the pregame ceremony). Mo got massaged for five innings and went out on to the bullpen in the seventh, so its completely different." Jeter made it 6-0 in the second with a two-out drive to left-centrre for his 257th career homer and first since July 28, 2013, against Tampa Bays Matt Moore at New York.dddddddddddd In Mondays series opener, the Yankees captain doubled to end a drought of 55 at-bats without an extra-base hit. "Its good to get one," Jeter said. "Im not catching Babe Ruth or anything, but at least youd like to get one. The important thing is that we got a win. It was a good game for us in a lot of different ways." Eleven of Jeters last 12 home runs have been solo shots, including one against Santiago when he pitched for the White Sox in August 2012. "When he came up to the plate the first time, I kind of gave him a little head nod, like Hey, we appreciate what youre doing here. But then you just battle, man," Santiago said. "I felt like I made a good pitch to him his next time up. Hes gotten me in the past on off-speed stuff, so I just went away from that. It was one of the better cutters Ive thrown my last seven starts, and he got me." Jeter got a standing ovation before his final at-bat during the Yankees three-run eighth. He hit a fielders choice comebacker to reliever Cory Rasmus for a force at the plate after a two-run single by John Ryan Murphy, and Carlos Beltran added a sacrifice fly. Santiago (0-6) was charged with six runs, five hits and three walks in 2 1-3 innings. Four of the runs were unearned, the result of errors by Santiago and right fielder Cowgill. NOTES: One day after the publication of Riveras book, "The Closer: My Story," Yankees manager Joe Girardi sidestepped questions about the combustible content — which included Riveras opinion that Bostons Dustin Pedroia was a better second baseman than ex-teammate Robinson Cano. "Those are Marianos comments, and its probably why I chose not to write books," Girardi said. "I had plenty of opportunities with some of my experiences, but right now I just dont think it would be a good idea." ... Jeters first game in Anaheim was May 27, 1996, when he batted ninth and went 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and two walks in Andy Pettittes 16-5 win over future Yankee Jim Abbott. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys Danny Rose Jersey ' ' '

effective major league pitcher,

DENVER -- A different team and a new season has made all the difference for Jordan Lyles. Lyles pitched effectively into the ninth inning, Troy Tulowitzki homered twice, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Texas Rangers 8-2 on Monday night. Nolan Arenado also homered to extend his hitting streak to 25 games. It is the longest in the majors this season. Lyles (4-0) stole the spotlight from his teammates with another outstanding performance. He came to the Rockies from Houston in the off-season, where he had a career ERA of 5.35 in 72 games and 65 starts. After Mondays gem hes carrying a 2.62 ERA in seven starts, three of which have come at hitter-friendly Coors Field. "The biggest thing is making better pitches when guys are in scoring position. I dont know the numbers but I can figure I wasnt too good in the past," he said. "Thats the biggest key." He also got plenty of offensive support. Tulowitzki, who was named the NL Player of the Month for April before the game, had his first multi-homer game of the season and the ninth of his career. He hit a two-run shot off Texas starter Martin Perez in the fifth and hit another two-run homer off reliever Shawn Tolleson to give Colorado a 7-1 lead in the seventh. Both homers came after Drew Stubbs had doubled. Tulowitzki had a chance for a third home run when he came to bat in the eighth but he walked. "If there was a good pitch to hit I was definitely going to offer," Tulowitzki said. "You do think about three home runs but its not like I was trying to go deep, I was trying to put together a good at-bat." It was more than enough for Lyles (4-0), who came within three outs of the second complete game of his career. He had struggled in six previous starts against Texas but held the Rangers in check a night after they had 14 hits and nine walks in a 14-3 win over the Angels. He worked out of trouble in the third and the Rangers first run came on a ground out to shortstop in the sixth. Texas had runners on first and second in the eighth but Lyles got Josh Wilson to ground into the third double play of the night to end the inning. "He was not the same guy we faced last year," Texas catcher Robinson Chirinos said. "Today he was keeping the ball down and getting ground balls." Manager Walt Weiss sent him out for the start of the ninth but Lyles left to a standing ovation after giving up a leadoff single to Adrian Beltre. He allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five in his longest outing since throwing a complete game against Milwaukee on Sept. 30, 2012. "He threw a heck of a game and it was a way to try to reward him for what hes done and show confidence in him for what hes done," Weiss said. "I told him it was going to be a short leash sending him out there." Perez (4-2) struggled for the second consecutive start after hurling 26 straight scoreless innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings. In his past two games he has been touched for 13 runs in 9 2-3 innings. "When he made a mistake out over the plate, they made him pay for it," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "Hes only human. Hes going to have some starts that dont go in his favour." Perez had not surrendered a home run for 46 innings dating back to last season when Arenado went deep on him in the second. After Carlos Gonzalez led off the second with a double to left, Arenado drilled a 93-mph fastball into the tunnel in left field to make it 2-0. It was Arenados sixth of the season and fourth during his streak. The hitting streak is the second-longest in Rockies history. Gonzalez made it 3-0 in the third when his ground out to first scored Brandon Barnes. Notes: Rockies manager Walt Weiss appealed an out call at first base in the second inning and the call was reversed upon review. ... Tulowitzki hit .364 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs in April. The Toronto Blue Jays will try to build on Mondays win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when they open up a series against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday. The Blue Jays will start knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who is unbeaten in his last four starts (2-0). Dickey topped Philadelphia on Thursday, as he held them to three runs (2 earned) and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to run his record to 3-3 to go along with a 4.72 ERA. He also has 23 strikeouts and 10 walks over his last four starts in 24 2/3 innings. Dickey has faced the Indians 11 times (5 starts) and is 2-2 versus them with a 3.61 ERA. Toronto can only hope Dickey pitches as well as Mark Buehrle did on Monday. The veteran left-hander survived six hits and five walks to allow just a pair of runs in six-plus innings in Torontos 7-2 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim. Buehrles seven wins and 2.04 ERA are tops in the American League. "Losing three straight at home, after we did play four games in a row good against Philly, but we have to come out and battle," Buehrle said. "If we win seven in a row, or we lose seven in a row, we cant get up too high, or down too low. We have to concentrate on each game, one game at a time." Jose Bautista and Brett Lawrie both homered in the win for the Blue Jays, who snapped a three-game losing streak. "They havent been able to bury us yet," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of the AL. "We havent put it all together, but they havent been able to bury us. We still keep hanging around, so that gives me optimism that when it all starts clicking." Cleveland enters this series playing the best baseball of its season, having won five of six after a series win over the Tampa Bay Rays this past weekend. The Indians won Sundays rubber match, as Nyjer Morgan went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and his first homer since 2012 in a 6-5 triumph. "We were looking for a way to get him in there today and Im glad we did," Indians manager Terry Francona said. Yan Gomes also homered for Cleveland, while Michael Bourn drove in a pair to help Josh Tomlin (2-0) pick up his second win in as many starts this season. Tomlin allowed two runs on six hits over six strong innings. Now, the Indians turn to right-handed sinkerballer Justin Masterson, who has won his last two starts. After tossing 7 1/3 scoreless frames to beat the Chicago White Sox, Masterson defeated the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, limiting them to two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. He also struck out seven, but walked four and still improved to 2-1 to go along with a 3.86 ERA. Masterson will be going on regular rest tonight after having pitched with an extra day his last time out. In four starts on regular rest this season, Masterson has turned in a 2.96 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. In his other three starts, which have come with extra days off, he has posted a 7.36 ERA and 2.05 WHIP. "It just feels right. I dont know what it is or how it works, but it just seems to be right," Masterson said. "I dont really know. It just kind of works out well. Everything is kind of lined up and you can say, Hey, this is my day. This is when Im doing it and Im going to make it work no matter what. Theres no question marks or anything. You know its your day." Masterson did not get a decision against the Jays earlier this season, but is 4-1 lifetime against them with a 2.79 ERA in 15 games (7 starts). Dwight Powell isnt supposed to be here. Stanford yielded a handful of NBA pros and hadnt been to the NCAA Tournament since 2008 - not the standard route to becoming an NBA Draft prospect. Last year, after a standout junior season, he earned himself a spot on the All Pac-10 First Team. Powell averaged 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds making an NBA career a legitimate possibility. Usually a promise from a team committing to select them makes a player leave college early. In this case, Powell made a promise to his mother, who was ailing from cancer to finish school, get his degree and compete in the NCAA tournamment for the first time.dddddddddddd Jacqueline Weir passed in 2012 and while its no secret Powell led the Cardinals to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament in March, what got him there and what tools will he need to excel at the next level? Powell is a forward who can face up on the floor whether to make a move to create his own shot or facilitate for others, as hes a more than capable passer for his size/position. While he will need to bulk up for the NBA game, his length (7 wingspan) and mobility are assets. Powell posses a strong basketball IQ, and while his motor isnt in question, an on court intensity would be welcomed. He will need to develop more consistency in a number of areas, particularly with his jump shot and adding range. With more potential than project, Powell has a skill set to contribute to an NBA team and enough talent and physical gifts to build upon. While many were expecting significant jumps from his on court performance from his junior to senior years, the growth in character and leadership cannot be overlooked either. Powell competed for the national program as a key member of Canadas Mens Developmental basketball team that traveled overseas tallying a 15-2 record last summer. The hearing in Regina provincial court is set for June 11 and 12 for defensive back Dwight Anderson, wide receiver Taj Smith and wide receiver Eron Riley. PITTSBURGH -- The chip is still there, Lance Moore insists, just as weighty and sharp as ever. Eight years in the NFL and a Super Bowl ring have done little to make the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver forget his modest roots. He can still rattle off the name of the players who beat him out for a job with the Cleveland Browns during his first training camp nearly a decade ago even though he was a long-shot undrafted free agent at the time. Most of them are long gone. Not Moore. Hes still around, still trying to prove himself, still nervous he could find himself out of a job at any minute. "I dont know if I ever really let myself get comfortable," Moore said. Even if Moore spent eight productive seasons helping Drew Brees and Sean Payton turn the New Orleans Saints into one of the NFLs most consistent winners. On a team of undersized and underappreciated talent, the 5-foot-9 Moore found a home. He caught 38 touchdown passes in 101 games with New Orleans, morphing from special teams ace to indispensable red zone target. Until, of course, the math got in the way. A hand injury limited Moore to just 37 receptions and two scores in 2013. Knowing he was owed $3.8 million in 2014, Moore wasnt surprised when the Saints cut him loose this spring. "Thats how it goes in this game," Moore said. "A lot of teams are trying to get younger and cheaper at the same time." Moore turns 31 in August. He understands hes well into the second half of an NFL journey that is already longer than he ever anticipated. Yet there is something about the opportunity with the Steelers that intrigues him. Maybe its because playing slot receiver in Pittsburgh is like discovering the NFLs fountain of youth. Hines Ward was effective well into the final days of his 14-year career before retiring in 2012. He was replaced by Jerricho Cotchery, who scored a remarkable 10 touchdowns for the Steelers in 2013 at age 31. Cotchery turned all those scores into a lucrative contract with Carolina. Enter Moore, who lacks Cotcherys size and Wards tenacious blocking skills but makes up for it with what he describes as "football savvy." "Ive been little for a long time," Moore said. "I am not getting any bigger. I am 30 years old. I am happy in this body. I feel like I have made a lot of plays and will continue to do that." Its exactly what the Steelers had in mind when they signed Moore to a two-year deal in March, an agreement that came with more than a little help from backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, who spent four years rooming with Moore when the two played at Toledo. Gradkowski started calling Pittsburgh coaches about Moore the second his good friend was released by New Orleans. It didnt take long for something to get done. Moore wasnt about to sit around and wait for a more lucrative offer than the one that will pay him a total of $3 million if he makes it through the 2015 season. "You look at this franchise, what it stands for and you know theyre about winning," Moore said. "You get a chance to play with somebody like (quarterback) Ben (Roethlisberger) and you dont turn it down." It hasnt taken long for Moore to win over Roethlisberger, who called his newest target "a pro" who hasnt needed much time to pick up the nuances of an offence that is reshaping itself, particularly at wide receiver. Pro Bowler Antonio Brown is the units unquestioned leader, but the departure of Cotchery and Emmanuel Sanders a year after Mike Wallace bolted for Miami has spearheaded a youth movement. The list of players jockeying for position with Moore include second-year players Justin Brown and Markus Wheaton and rookie Martavis Bryant. Moore admits its a little weird being the old guy in meeting rooms. Hes nearly five years Browns senior and will be one of only three players in their 30s among Pittsburghs offensive regulars, joining Roethlisberger and tight end Heath Miller. It could be worse. Moore couldnt be here at all. If this is the beginning of the end, hell take it. Hes close to his boyhood home in Ohio on a team expecting to win after a pair of mediocre 8-8 seasons. His new team expects to play a lot like its new wide receiver: with a chip that likely wont go away anytime soon. "Youve got to keep that," Moore said. "In this league, that can make the difference." Bulls Jersey .J. Mayo and Gary Neal put on a long-range shooting display, but it was Caron Butlers little 2-foot tip-in that made the difference for the Milwaukee Bucks. Campbell returned to the field on Thursday, the next step in his recovery from a head injury sustained on Nov. 24 when he was hurt on a blindside hit by Pittsburghs William Gay. Campbell must still be cleared by an independent neurologist -- per NFL rules -- before he is allowed to play against the Patriots. Campbell took part in all drills and threw to his receivers during the portion of practice open to media members. Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said he was "very encouraged" by Campbells progress, and offensive co-ordinator Norv Turner said he was glad to have the veteran back. Campbell has started four games this season. "Well, just getting him back in the walk-through, I think everyone felt a sense of relief in terms of continuity," said Turner, who in all his seasons as a coach couldnt recall many times when he didnt knoww who would start this late in the week.dddddddddddd "Theres a lot of firsts this year for a lot of us," Turner said. "When you really think about it, obviously, three guys have played, but weve had six different games where weve had a different starter. Thats a challenge." Campbell, Brandon Weeden and Brian Hoyer, who suffered a season-ending knee injury, have started for Cleveland in 2013. Campbell had to sit out last weeks loss to Jacksonville and was replaced by Weeden, who started and was concussed at some point against the Jaguars. Weeden has not yet been given permission to practice. The Browns signed free agent Caleb Hanie earlier this week in case Campbell or Weeden cant play. Alex Tanney was signed last week off Dallas practice squad, and he and Hanie split the plays with Clevelands starting offence in Wednesdays practice. Turner said both young quarterbacks have made progress and can be counted on in case Campbell is unable to play. cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys Danny Rose Jersey ' ' '

Richmond, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Treveon Graham scored 21 points, including a clutch 3-pointer in the second overtime, and pulled down 11 rebounds to help VCU knock off No. 23 Northern Iowa 93-87 on Saturday. Grahams late layup in regulation helped the Rams (6-3) force overtime and after being held scoreless in the first extra period, he hit the 3-pointer in the second overtime that put VCU ahead for good. Briante Weber chipped in 14 points and six steals for the Rams, and Melvin Johnson added 12. Our bench production is what won us the game. Our bench was better than it has been earlier in the year. We still have to keep improving, but today was a step in the right direction, VCU coach Shaka Smart said. Wes Washpun and Matt Bohannon scored 27 and 18 points, respectively, for the Panthers (9-1), including 12 of the teams 14 points in the overtime sessions. It was not enough, though, and Washpun fouled out of the game in the second overtime. Deon Mitchell added 12 points in UNIs first loss of the season. With 54 seconds remaining, Northern Iowa took its only lead of the second half. Bohannon nailed a contested 3-point attempt to put the Panthers up 73-71, but Grahams layup on the next possession evened the game at 73-73. UNI could not get a shot off at the buzzer due to the aggressive VCU defense. Mo Alie-Coxs slam on the first possession of overtime got the Rams off to a quick start, but another clutch shot by Bohannon with 33 seconds to go tied the game at 83-83. All 10 of the Panthers points in the first extra session were scored by Bohannon or Washpun. The Rams once again opened the overtime period with the first basket, this time a triple from Doug Brooks. Bohannon had an opportunity for a three-point play on the next possession, but he missed the free throw that would have tied it. After Grahams long distance shot extended the VCU lead to four, Washpun drove to the basket with less than a minute left to cut the deficit to two, but he committed an offensive foul for his fifth of the game. Once Washpun left the game, the Panthers only got one bucket from Mitchell, and it was sandwiched by a pair of free throws from Weber and Graham to seal the win for VCU. The Rams maintained a small but persistent lead in the second half. The Panthers twice cut that margin to a point, but VCU answered each time with a 3-pointer to extend its advantage a little more. Justin Tillmans layup at the 6:16 mark gave the Rams their first double-digit lead of the game at 65-54, but thats when Washpun took over to send UNI on a run. He piled up eight points in the Panthers 19-8 surge to close regulation and send the game to the extra period. In the first half, UNI was able to survive VCUs Havoc defense despite committing nine turnovers. The Panthers shot 50.0 percent in the half and led by as many as nine six minutes into the game thanks to a quick 5-0 spurt highlighted by a Paul Jesperson 3. An 8-0 Rams run spurred by five points from Graham cut their deficit to one, and the final 12 1/2 minutes were back and forth. VCU took its first lead with under eight minutes to go with a Weber triple. The teams cooled down as halftime approached and in the final six minutes, each team only scored four points for a 37-35 Rams lead at the half. Game Notes VCU now leads the all-time series 2-1 with the home team winning all three meetings ... The Panthers have only started 10-0 once in team history, in 1963-64 ... NIUs loss leaves nine remaining undefeated teams ... Mitchells 12 points puts him over 1,000 for his career ... VCU hits the court next Tuesday against Belmont, while UNIs next game is against in-state rival Iowa. wholesale soccer jerseys . Calvert and his team of Kyle Kurz, Lucas Van Den Bosch, Brendan Wilson, alternate Matt Dunstone and coach Tom Clasper earned their spot in the playoffs by finishing in third place in the round robin with a 6-3 record. "Were a little disappointed right now," said Calvert immediately after the game. "We played a lot better in the second half after getting off to a sluggish start. We didnt really make the other team make too difficult shots." Both teams stuck to defence, and after eight ends the score was tied 3-3. Switzerland scored two in the ninth, but Calvert was able to force the extra end with a perfect draw for two on his last shot of the 10th. In the extra end, Switzerland missed a couple of tick shots, allowing Canada to draw around and lie one. With his last, Calvert drew the front off the four-foot to lie two, and Schwaller elected to try the double take-out.dddddddddddd. His shooter just hung on for the score of one and a ticket to the semifinal. "It was a really, really tough game," said Swiss skip Schwaller. "It was so close in the end, maybe just a few centimetres in it, just crazy. We played really defensively, that was the key to winning. Canadian curling always involves a lot of stones and guards - we wanted to play defensively and not play their game." Tuesday afternoon, Schwaller will play Norways Eirik Mjoeen, who lost to Scotlands Kyle Smith in the Page 1-2 playoff game. Smith goes directly to Wednesdays final, where he will try to defend his 2013 world junior championship title. How can you not write, talk and sing the praises of the dominant defences we witnessed during Week 4 of the 2014 season?Heres a few statistical gems that jumped out from a week where the attention turned from great throws, catches and runs to bone-crushing hits, interceptions and stifling defensive play.A total of nine touchdowns were scored during Week 4, as opposed to an average of just over 18 in the first three weeks of the season. Remember, one of those nine touchdowns was scored by the defence - thats when Odell Willis had a pick-six to open the scoring for the week. That was six minutes and 17 seconds into the first game of the week. From there, only eight offensive touchdowns for the rest of the week.Thank goodness special teams and our kickers were on point for the most part of Week 4. In total, the legs of the CFL were 20 of 23 or 87 per cent on the week, but even that portion of the game was marred by a botched last-minute field goal attempt by Hamilton. Costly! The defences were so strong in Week 4 that they lowered the average total scoring by 17.9 points per game, from 49.7 the first three weeks to 31.8 in Week 4.What is going on and whos causing all these problems for the offences around the league?Crazy fact of the week - Six of the nine teams in the CFL have new defensive coordinators and five of the nine have new offensive coordinators.Typically, defences will start out hot and further ahead of the offences as training camp ends. The thinking here is that offensive play is more about timing, working in unison, and it takes longer to come together than the reaction-based defensive schemes. I say hold on, partner. Thats not what Im seeing these days. What Im watching is more diversified defensive schemes that are every bit as difficult to perfect. Schemes that require as much, if not more, time to master all the necessary subtleties needed in order to be consistently successful.Im seeing defences that are not relying solely on reaction, but that are taking the upper hand and dictating to the offences. This is the classic and constant game of chess that has been played out since the genesis of football. Last week, the defence had the offence on its heels, stymied and confused. They had the offence in protect mode and retreating.Offensively speaking, you cannot play this way and expect to succeed. The challenge is to flip the script and be aggressive and attack. You must put the defence on its heels and in a retreat mode. Offences must be offensive and make defences be defensive! They must dictate to the defence the tempo of the game, impose their will, rhythm and flow as to how the game is going to be played. Easier said than done, yes, but especially when you are meshing new systems with young signal callers. This past week, we saw some young quarterbacks on their heels, flustered and with their eyes not right. Thats when the quarterbacks eyes are not on their reads or indicators and going through their progressions. Their eyes are darting all over the place and not down field, but fixated on defenders in their face, closing ground and fast. Theyre feeling pressure when its not there, moving out of a perfectly fine throwing lane or pocket because theyre not locked in. Thats usually about the time when receivers are running free, down field, wide open while the quarterbacks are seeing ghosts, getting happy feet and not able to deliver the ball or make that throw that could stop the insanity and pressure altogether. This week, the defensive pressure, ability to cover and schemes all played a huge part in causing this to happen. The defence dictated and overwhelmingly won Week 4s chess match. The video tells the truth or, as they say, "The eye in the sky does not lie."Veteran Kevin Glenn capitalized on a solid Montreal defence by attacking, staying focused and delivering while under pressure.Ricky Ray had his chances down field. He missed once on a big play himself and on a couple other big play opportunities, he did not get the help needed on the other end.Mike Reilly hung tough in the pocket and found the big play on a busted assignment in the Winnipeg secondary. Miraculously, on several occasions, the tough-as-nails quarterback did his impersonation of Houdini and escaped extreme pressure, piling up 96 yards rushing, making the difference in that ball game.Other than that, Bo-Levi Mitchell, even in victory, was not sharp and missed on several plays. Remember the only offensive touchdown in that contest came on a reverse pass that went bad. Brad "Sinopoli Money" made something out of nothing and scored on a brilliant run for his first-ever CFL touchdown.Henry Burris found a way to win, but, never found the end zone. He should have found the end zone at least once, but thats another story. Henry kept his poise, under pressure, and delivered a big play in the end when the game was on the line. Torontos defence did everything they could, holding Ottawa to six field goals! Congratulations to the Ottawa Redblacks for finding a way to win on a special night in the nations capital. The other quarterbacks have some work to do and, lets just say, they struggled against some great defensive performances that dominated Week 4.Crazy stat of Week 4: the Eastern division is 0-9 on the road this season, including 0-8 on the road vs. Western teams! TOP PERFORMERS Jon Cornish, RB, Calgary (209 YDS, 2 TD, 15 touches vs. Toronto) - Making up for time lost due to an early-season concussion, Cornish ranks third in the league with 587 rushing yards and hes only played five games! Ricky Ray, QB, Toronto (33-for-38, 338 YDS, 4 TD, 1 INT at Calgary) - Leading the league with 20 touchdown passes and ranking second in QB rating and passing yards, Ray had a spectacular game against Calgary, especially early, before the Stampeders comeback took over. Andrew Harris, RB, B.C. (140 YDS, 1 TD, 18 touches vs. Winnipeg) - One of the games premier all-purpose backs, Harris has struggled through some injuries, but broke through against the Bombers, running for more than 100 yards for the second time this season. Zach Collaros, QB, Hamilton (29-for-36, 287 YDS, 2 TD, 1 INT, 49 rush YDS vs. Saskatchewan) - Since returning from injury, Collaros has been outstanding, throwing for 942 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions in three games giving the TiCats a much more formidable attack. PLAYERS TO WATCH IN WEEK 13 Stefan Logan, RB, B.C. - His role is diminished with the return of Andrew Harris, but Logan is a threat when Harris needs a break. He put up 60 yards on 11 carries against Winnipeg last week; not bad for a second-stringer. Jason Barnes, SB, Toronto - The veteran receiver had six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown at Calgary last week and as long as Ricky Ray is chucking it, there is value to be found in the Argonauts receiving corps. Maurice Price, WR Calgary - With Drew Tate filling in for injured QB Bo Levi Mitchell, and other injuries in the Calgary receiving corps, there is an opportunity for Price, who had a season-high five catches against Toronto last week.
