Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson plans to start goal keeper Marco Carducci and midfielder Russell Teibert in the second leg of the Canadian Championship semi-final on Wednesday. Robinson also announced that Teibert will captain the squad as they attempt to overturn a 2-1 disadvantage in the home-leg of the two game matchup. Though they were defeated, the Whitecaps scored an important stoppage time away goal to give them some momentum heading into the second leg. One night after he set the Braves franchise record for career saves, Craig Kimbrel blew his third of the season in 19 opportunities. The Diamondbacks were 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position before Aaron Hills pinch-hit double off Kimbrel down the right field line scored Ender Inciarte from second to tie it at 2-2. Jason Heyward homered with two outs in the 10th off Addison Reed to put the Braves up 3-2, but Miguel Montero tied it again with an opposite-field, one-out shot off Anthony Varvaro in Arizonas half of the inning. Ross singled with one out off David Carpenter (4-1), then Didi Gregorius walked to bring up Parra, whose soft fly ball fell in front of centre fielder B.J. Upton. Randall Delgado (1-1) struck out the side after a leadoff walk in the 11th to get the victory. It was just the 18th blown save in 173 career opportunities for Kimbrel, still the third-highest percentage in baseball history for pitchers with at least 150 save tries. Kimbrel, who earned a four-out save in Atlantas 5-2 victory Friday night, got Chris Owings to fly out to start the ninth. But Inciarte walked and stole second. Hill sliced one just inside the right field foul line to bring Inciarte home. Heywards two-out shot to left field off Addison Reed was his second home run in as many nights and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Moontero was 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position before he hit Varvaros 2-1 pitch just over the wall in left.dddddddddddd Inciarte was called safe on a bunt to start the 11th, but Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez challenged and the call was reversed. It didnt matter as Arizona went on to score the winner. Starters Ervin Santana of Atlanta and Wade Miley of Arizona had strong outings. Santana gave up only an unearned run in seven innings, scattering six hits. Miley allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits in seven innings, fanning six with no walks. The Braves took a 2-1 lead when, with two outs in the sixth, Justin Upton singled to right, then scored from first on Evan Gattis second double of the night. Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla committed two errors, one leading to a run. Martin Prado led off the second with a single, took second on David Peraltas base hit, then scored when Uggla threw the ball away trying to convert a double play on a fielders choice ground out by Inciarte. Atlanta tied it in the third when Andrelton Simmons doubled, took third on the right fielder Parras errant throw, then scored on Heywards grounder, sliding in barely below the catcher Monteros tag after a high throw from the third baseman Prado. TAMPA, Fla. -- The Boston Bruins are making a charge to claim the Eastern Conferences top spot. Reilly Smith scored the lone shootout goal in the seventh round to lead the Bruins past the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Saturday night. Smith put an in-close shot between the pads of Ben Bishop. Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask caught a break on Tampa Bays seventh shootout attempt when Richard Panik hit the post. "Many times you get that gut feeling, and I said, You know what, this is probably a good chance for Smitty to get himself going," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "I even told one of my assistant coaches, Its going to end here." Smith has not scored a regulation goal in his last 11 games. "It was good to be able to help the team get an extra point on that," Smith said. "Personally, it may take a little bit off my shoulders, but hopefully I can get back to it next game." The Bruins, winners of four straight, got regulation goals from Daniel Paille, Carl Soderberg and Johnny Boychuk. Boston trails East-leading Pittsburgh by a point. Ondrej Palat, Mark Barberio and Valtteri Filppula scored for the Lightning, who are 1-4-1 since the end of the Olympic break. "We, at least, got a point out of this one, so its definitely a step," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "This is the best weve played since the break." The Bruins outshot Tampa Bay, which had the games first seven shots, 32-20. Boston pulled even at 3 when Boychuk snapped a 20-game goal drought 8:11 into the third. The Bruins have outscored their opponents 78-43 during the third period this season. Filppula put the Lightning ahead 3-2 from the slot at 9:31 of the second after the teams had each scored twice earlier in the period. Palat ended Tampa Bays long scoring drought against the Bruins on a short-handed goal to make it 1-0 just 27 seconds into the second. The Lightning went 169:55 without scoring after Filppula, in the first of four games between the teams this season on Oct. 3, had a goal midway through the second in that game. Boston had outscored Tampa Bay 11-1 in winning the previous three meetings. After Barberio scored at 4:13 of the second, the Bruins had two goals in 1:31 by Paille (6:5 and Soderberg (8:29) to tie it at 2. Paille beat Bishop with a backhander between his legs before Soderberg had a breakaway goal. "Even though we fell behind 2-0, it was just small mistakes that ended up in the back of our net, but we seemed to find our rhythm after that," Julien said. Lightning star Steven Stamkos played in his second game since returning from a broken right shin, which occurred in a game at Boston on Nov. 11. The centre, who has no points through the two games, lost out on a breakaway chance in overtime when time ran out as he approached the Boston zone. "I saw it coming, and Im looking at the clock," Cooper said. "Its just one of those things." Stamkos played 21:46, had one shot and finished minus-2. NOTES: The Bruins are 6-0-3 in their last nine road games, which is the longest point stretch since a nine-game run in 2010-11. ... Boston RW Jarome Iginla played in his 1,295th NHL game, moving him past Pierre Turgeon into sole possession of 56th place on the career list. ... Chicago senior adviser Scotty Bowman has resumed scouting games after having right knee replacement surgery on Jan. 24. The 13-time Stanley Cup winner is a regular at Lightning home games. ... Diego Costa headed in Gabis corner seven minutes from time to secure victory ahead of the return match in Madrid on March 11. Faced with Utah setting up a potential game-winning shot in the waning seconds of overtime, Dominic Artis tipped a pass intended for Dallin Bachynski to Dotson and he raced down the court for a breakaway dunk with 1 second left. Dotsons basket sealed a 70-68 comeback victory in dramatic fashion and helped the Ducks remain unbeaten on Thursday night in the Pac-12 opener for both teams. "That was unbelievable," said Dotson, who finished with 11 points. "I never had a game-winner like that before. Its the greatest feeling for me. Thats a great way to start conference (play)." Richard Amardi had 14 points and Artis added 12 for Oregon (13-0, 1-0), which rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half. The Ducks are off to their best start since winning 13 straight games to open the 2006-07 season. Oregon won despite shooting only 38.7 per cent (24 of 62) from the field. The Ducks made up the difference by holding the Utes to 38.1 per cent (24 of 63). Both teams ranked in the top five nationally in field goal percentage coming into the game. "Nobody got a rhythm to their offence," Oregon coach Dana Altman said. "Theyre a good offensive team. I like to think we are. Neither team had a very good rhythm and missed some open shots. I dont know if it was tight because it was the first conference game. I dont know what it was. But there wasnt much flow offensively to the game." Jordan Loveridge scored 21 points for Utah, while Delon Wright chipped in 14 and Bachynski added 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Utes (11-2, 0-1) led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but could not overcome the last-second turnover. Wright put the Utes ahead 68-66 with consecutive baskets. But Dotson made two free throws to tie it in the final minute before coming up with the winning basket. Loveridge got off a 3-point attempt before the buzzer, but it bounced off the rim. He had a chance for a game-winning 3-pointer onn the final play of regulation, but that shot also came up short.dddddddddddd "We know we can play and compete with everyone in the league," Loveridge said. "Hopefully next time we can make the plays down the stretch. The guys that have been here the last few years understand what we need to do moving forward. It hurts of course but we cant sit back and think about it." Utah smothered Oregon on the defensive end to start both halves and the Utes built a 10-point lead early in the second half when Dakarai Tucker drained a 3-pointer to put Utah ahead 45-35 with 13:45 left. That lead did not last long. Oregon tied the game behind a 12-2 spurt that started and finished with layups by Elgin Cook. The Ducks finally took a 51-49 lead on a tip-in basket by Amardi with 7:32 left. "We got a little loose with the ball and didnt have that same intensity," Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "I think it was surprising to our guys to see them continue to run with us." The Ducks went up 58-55 on Johnathan Loyds layup with 3:46 remaining. Wright made a layup and two free throws to tie it at 60. The Utes finally retook the lead briefly at 62-60 when Brandon Taylor made two free throws with 42 seconds left. Dotson made two free throws with 27.5 seconds left. Then Loveridge misfired on the potential game winner and the game went to overtime. It offered a snapshot of Utahs struggles from long range. The Utes shot just 15.8 per cent (3 of 19) from beyond the arc. "We knew they had a couple of shooters, so we were just trying to close out and run them off the line," Loyd said. "If they did get it up, we tried to contest everything. And it worked for us. They missed some shots for us." Oregon opened the game by missing 12 of its first 14 shots from the field and went without a field goal for 6:18 between its first and second baskets of the game. The Ducks shot 35.7 per cent from the field (10 of 27) in the first half. Utah had a 20-10 edge in points in the paint in the first half even though both teams had 19 rebounds. wholesale jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '

PITTSBURGH -- There used to be a time -- any year really between 1993-2012 -- when reaching 81 wins would be cause for celebration for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Not anymore. These days the certainty of a non-losing season is nothing more than a speed bump on Pittsburghs resilient quest for a playoff berth. Gregory Polanco, Neil Walker and Ike Davis all homered and the Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox 9-1 on Wednesday night to maintain their grip on the second National League wild card spot. Polanco and Walker hit solo shots off Boston starter Clay Buchholz (8-9) and Davis drilled a three-run blast to centre off reliever Steven Wright. The Pirates have won 10 of 12 and improved to a season-high 11 games over .500 (81-70). Pittsburgh moved 2.5 games clear of Milwaukee in its race for a second straight post-season bid after the Brewers fell to St. Louis. "We got some good pitches to hit and didnt miss them," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Fun to watch those guys work in the box." Francisco Liriano (6-10) won his third straight decision, allowing one run in six innings. The left-hander worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and has now given up two runs or less in 11 of his 12 starts since the All-Star break, looking like the pitcher who won 16 games in 2013 than the one that struggled with his command and his health during a rocky first half to 2014. "It was a battle for me today, just trying to execute pitches, make good pitches," Liriano said. "I got a couple little plays and just a tough night location-wise but Ill take it." Boston rookie centerfielder Rusney Castillo went 1 for 4 in his major league debut. The Cuban defector signed a seven-year, $72.5 million deal with the Red Sox last month. Boston has lost three of four. "Obviously Id like a better outcome in terms of winning the game," Castillo said. "But I was pretty satisfied with my overall approach and the way I stepped in today." Castillos arrival in the Red Sox clubhouse on Wednesday afternoon ended a quick tour of the teams minor league system. He made stops at three different levels before coming up to Boston to stay. While manager John Farrell stressed the final games of an otherwise lost season are simply a chance for Castillo to "get acclimated" to life in the big leagues, the 27-year-old believes it wont take long for him to get up to speed. He provided a brief glimpse of whats to come in the fourth when he ripped a sharp grounder to second that Walker couldnt handle for his first major league hit. "Ill sign it and keep it in my house somewhere," Castillo said with a smile. While Castillo is a part of Bostons long-term future, the present belongs to the Pirates. Polanco wasted little time drumming Buchholz, who hadnt given up a homer in his last 36 innings. There was no chance to make it 37 after Polanco drilled a Buchholz fastball into the seats in right for his seventh homer of the season and first since Aug. 10. The lead ballooned to 4-0 in the second behind a two-run double by Clint Barmes. Walker golfed a Buchholz pitch into the first row of seats in right for his 21st homer of the season in the third, extending his record for most home runs in a season by a Pittsburgh second baseman. TRAINERS ROOM Red Sox: 2B Brock Holt, out with a concussion since Aug. 25, is scheduled to meet with concussion specialist Micky Collins on Thursday. Farrell said Holt is doing daily vision exercises and running on a treadmill but has not started baseball related activities. Pirates: RHP Charlie Morton reported no issues a day after pitching five shutout innings in his first start in a month due to a hernia issue. Manager Clint Hurdle said hes still hasnt made a decision on who will start when Mortons turn in the rotation comes up again on Sunday against Milwaukee. UP NEXT Red Sox: Brandon Workman (1-9) will try to end a nine-game losing streak when he makes his 15th start of the season. Workmans only victory of the season came on June 10 against Baltimore. His ERA is a season-high 5.27 after giving up five earned runs in three innings of a 10-6 loss to Baltimore last week. Pirates: Gerrit Cole (9-5) goes for his third straight victory. The 24-year-old struck out six and walked one while working six innings in a 7-3 victory over Chicago in his previous start. nike free run hinta . In the late game, Wozniak, from Blainville, Que., downed Britains Laura Robson 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.As much as Brad Richards wants to put a life-changing decision behind him, hes not about to choose his new home hastily and will, at the very least, take much of the day and night digesting and analyzing the multiple offers expected to roll in. The Toronto Maple Leafs need Richards, a number one centre capable of feeding Phil Kessel the puck and perhaps, turning Kessel into the 50 goal scorer Brian Burke thinks he can be. The New York Rangers are equally smitten and as long as Toronto or another team doesnt table a mega-deal at $ 8 million or more per season, the Rangers appear to be the primary target. Richards, like many NHL players, loves New York. He has a strong working relationship with John Tortorella whos direct, no nonsense approach coaxed a Conn Smythe performance out of Richards en route to the 2004 Stanley Cup championship. The possibility of playing for Tortorella again very likely appeals to Richards, as does the devellopment of a team - with strong goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist - could quickly become a contender.dddddddddddd Much of free agent frenzy will be spent dissecting the many possibilities Brad Richards may face. Meanwhile, heres another name worth considering, Tomas Fleischman. Fleischman is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent and for the most part has flown under the radar because of poor health. However, source say the talented forward, whose season was ended in Colorado with a blood clot, has been given a clean bill of health from doctors. Fleischman is on medication now that prevents the clotting from happening again and has been assured the problem wont return as long as he remains on the meds. Fleischman earned $2.6 million last year and could be a solid offensive add for a team willing to invest the time into researching his status in the hours leading up to the opening of the free agent market. wholesale jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '

SAN DIEGO -- Utah State allowed two 100-yard rushers all season long. Jordan Lynch, the all-purpose Heisman Trophy finalist from Northern Illinois, failed to make it into that exclusive club. The Aggies swarming defence made Lynch look average during a 21-14 victory over No. 24 Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl on Thursday night. Safety Brian Suite intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble by Lynch, who was bottled up for only 39 yards rushing. That kept him from becoming the first major college player to rush for 2,000 yards and pass for 2,000 yards in the same season. Utah State stymied a Huskies offence that had averaged nearly 42 points a game. "The only thing we do every week is not stop the run game, but eliminate the run game," USU coach Matt Wells said. "But obviously he is a big part of the run game, so we were able to eliminate him, make him one-dimensional and then we were able to actually find a way to run the football, which makes them one-dimensional, and the ballgame is ours." Joey DeMartino, who went to high school and junior college in San Diego, carried 23 times for 143 yards and a touchdown for Utah State (9-5). He was the offensive MVP. "The feelings unreal," DeMartino said. "I couldnt ask for a better senior game to go out on and to be in front of my hometown, my family, my friends and everyone who supported me out here." DeMartino said the Aggies wanted to bounce back from a loss to Fresno State in the Mountain West Conference championship game. "We took a hard loss there," DeMartino said. "Thats not how we play. We just wanted to come back and prove to the nation that we can compete every game and we did just that." Lynch was third in the Heisman Trophy voting and made The Associated Press All-America team as an all-purpose player. He extended his major college record for yards rushing for a quarterback in a season to 1,920. He completed 20 of 35 passes for 216 yards and was sacked twice. Lynch ran for a touchdown and passed for another for NIU (12-2), which ended the season with two straight losses. The Huskies were coming off a 20-point loss to Bowling Green in the Mid-American Conference title game that cost them a BCS bid. "We gave it the 24-hour rule," Lynch said. "The carpet got pulled out from under us losing to Bowling Green and thinking about going to a BCS game. But we got a chance to play a great opponent in Utah State. I thought we had a great three weeks of practice. We came out with a lot of energy and had fun. All the credit goes to Utah State. Lynchs pass was intercepted on the first play of the third quarter by Suite, setting up a go-ahead, 5-yard touchdown pass from Darrel Garretson to Brandon Swindall. The Aggies put it away when DeMartino scored on a 1-yard run with 4:14 to go for a 21-7 lead. It capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive that consumed 7:19. "We had to find a way to keep wearing them down and Im going to tell you what -- we imposed our will on them at the end of the game," Wells said. "On that one drive to make it 21-7, that was more of an issue that they had been out there all night because the offence couldnt do a thing," NIU coach Rod Carey said. NIU punted four times, had two turnovers, two missed field goals and relinquished possession on downs one time. "We werent able to move it like we normally do," Carey said. Lynch threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Juwan Brescacin with 1:44 left to pull NIU to 21-14. NIU tried an onside kicked that USU recovered. There were four turnovers and three missed field goals. The game drew only 23,408 to 70,000-seat Qualcomm Stadium, the lowest attendance in the bowls nine-year history. Suite also recovered Lynchs fumble in the first quarter. NIUs first five series in the second half ended with an interception, three punts and a missed field goal. "We had our chances," Lynch said. "We had our chances to make some plays and score some points. We were in the red zone three times or so and we didnt come away with points. We just didnt capitalize on it." The teams staggered through an unimpressive first half that included a missed field goal by each team, a shanked punt by NIU and a lost fumble by Lynch. Lynch scored on a 1-yard run with 8:17 left in the second quarter to cap a 15-play, 78-yard drive and give NIU a 7-6 lead. Lynch ended NIUs second possession by losing a fumble at midfield. Utah State responded with a 31-yard field goal by Nick Diaz. NIUs Mathew Sims was wide right on a 37-yard field goal attempt and DeMartino had a 58-yard run to set up Diazs 39-yard field goal. Bode Miller showed signs of bouncing back from his disappointing downhill result by leading the opening training session Tuesday for the super-combined. While many contenders sat out, Miller sped down the shortened Rosa Khutor downhill course in one minute, 56.42 seconds. Miller was a top contender for the downhill after some torrid training runs, but mistakes in the middle section of the course led to an eighth place finish. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway finished second in Tuesdays training, 0.66 seconds behind, and Paul De La Cuesta of Spain was third, 0.82 behind. Contenders Alexis Pinturault of France and Ted Ligety of the United States were fifth and 15th, respectively. Morgan Pridy of Whistler, B.C., was 11th with a time of 1:59.26. Tyson Chandler picked up 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Monta Ellis chipped in 15 and Dirk Nowitzki followed with 14 points and eight boards for the Mavericks, who snapped a two-game slide and have won four of their last six. Nowitzki moved into eighth place on the NBAs all-time scoring list, passing Elvin Hayes. We are very fortunate we have had a chance to watch it for an extended period of time, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said of Nowitzkis career. Carlos Boozer poured in 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Los Angeles, which has lost five of their last seven and two of three with Kobe Bryant on the sidelines. Nick Young totaled 15 with Jordan Hill and Wayne Ellington adding 12 points each in defeat. What have I learned? That we would love to have him in the lineup, Lakers coach Byron Scott said of Bryants absence. I think these three games prove that we do need him on the floor. The Mavs led 95-79 with 3:56 remaining on Rondos lone triple of the contest, but the Lakers gradually chipped away for the remainder. Wesley Johnson scored seven straight points, Young added a trey, then Ellington sank back-to-back shots -- including one from distance with 9.9 seconds showing -- and Los Angeles crept within 100-96.dddddddddddd However, Jefferson and Ellis both split their two attempts around a Hill slam which maintained Dallas four-point edge, and Jeremy Lin failed to connect from beyond the arc just shy of the buzzer after Hill grabbed the rebound of Ellis miss from the line. Chandler posted eight points in an early surge which saw the Mavericks race out to a 16-7 lead and the hosts were up 26-19 after one quarter. The Lakers pulled even thanks to an 11-4 run to begin the second, forging a 30-30 deadlock on a Lin step-back jumper with 8:24 to play in the half. Later in the period, Rondos runner pushed the Dallas advantage to 46-37, and it led 48-42 at the break. Chandlers alley oop off a dish from Parsons and Parsons own easy basket capped the Mavs burst of 12-1 to kick off the second half, providing the hosts a 58-43 edge. Though the Lakers whittled that gap to eight late in the quarter, a Rondo shot gave the Mavs a 10-point margin heading to the fourth. Game Notes Dallas has beaten the Lakers four straight times at home after dropping five straight from March of 2011 through February of 2013 ... Ellis also chipped in seven assists ... TORONTO -- A late-game goalkeeping gaffe by Milos Kocic was the latest chapter in Toronto FCs season-long struggle with conceding late goals. Kocic mishandled an easy save in the 88th minute, allowing Hamdi Salihi to score late in D.C. Uniteds 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. It was the 16th time Toronto has conceded in the final 15 minutes of MLS games this season. "I lost the game for my team today and I want to apologize to my team," said Kocic. "The boys deserved better today and the fans and the club. Everybody deserved better and I let them down today so thats it." The victory clinched a playoff spot for United (16-10-6), while last-place Toronto (5-20-7) stretched its winless streak to 12 games since beating Colorado on July 18. The late goal came when former Toronto player Maicon Santos sent a cross from the right side that Kocic couldnt hold onto. Salihi was in the right place to tap home from close range. Kocic had barely been involved in the second half as Toronto played aggressively against its playoff-bound visitors. "I think it was the quietest the goalkeeper has had for quite some time," said head coach Paul Mariner. "When youre in our position youve got to take your chances but we didnt. You leave teams hanging around and things like that happen." Announced attendance was 15,281 on a chilly, blustery day alongside Lake Ontario, though swaths of seats remained empty as Toronto played its second to last home game. Some fans even held up signs voicing their dissatisfaction as Toronto plays out the remainder of its sixth season -- all without a post-season berth. Five minutes in D.C. midfielder Andy Najars cross from the right side was deflected and Kocic had to be sharp to backtrack and poke the ball over. Torontos only real opportunity of the first half came in the ninth minute on some nice build up on the right side. Reggie Lambe sent a cross into the 18-yard box where forward Luis Silva just got his toe on the ball to deflect it towards goal. But D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid raced off his line and cut down the angle to block Silvas shot. "I think this was as well as Ive seen them play for quite some time," said Mariner. "Weve got to take our chances but were not taking our chances." The visitors were gifted with an opportunity on the half hour mark as Toronto defenders Darren ODeas poor clearance resulted in Lionard Pajoy getting a chance at the top of the penalty area but his shot missed over the bar. Toronto had the better chances in the second half and in the 62nd minute Hall took the ball to the edge of the D.C. penalty area and found Ryan Johnson, whose high shot forced a diving save from Hamid. "I think for large periods we outplayed D.C. and when we had chances we couldnt take them and unfortunately paid for it in the end," said midfielder Terry Dunfield. "Another day and I think the worst result we get is 0-0." Toronto threatened again in the 71st minute with D.C. slow getting back on defence. However, Andrew Wiedeman took too long on his shot, allowing the visitors to recover and his shot couldnt get through traffic. Chase Budinger Jersey . Watch the game live on TSN2 and TSN Mobile TV at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. The Flyers have posted a 3-1 record on a five-game residency, bringing their record in March to 10-2-1. Philadelphia has recorded two straight wins and Saturdays victory over Montreal allowed the Flyers to clinch a playoff berth for the fifth straight year and for the 16th time in the past 17 seasons. Thanks in part to a two-goal effort from Danny Briere, the Flyers earned a 4-1 win over the Canadiens on Saturday. It was Philadelphias seventh win in eight home games, improving the clubs record as the host this season to 21-11-5. Kimmo Timonen scored a goal while Ilya Bryzgalov posted 23 saves and added an assist for the Flyers, who have won five of their last seven games. "Obviously it helps confidence wise because I was in a bit of a drought there," said Briere, who has scored three goals in his last seven games after going his previous 23 tests without a marker. "The last three weeks I felt my game was turning around and tonight felt real good." The Flyers are currently seeded fifth in the Eastern Conference, where they sit four points behind Pittsburgh and six ahead of sixth-seeded New Jersey. The Devils and Penguins are both off on Monday. Philadelphia will visit Toronto on Thursday before returning home to host Ottawa on Saturday. The Lightning are stiill trying to claw their way into the playoff race in the East, but Guy Bouchers club is running out of time quickly.dddddddddddd. With eight games left, Tampa Bay is nine points out of the conferences final postseason berth. Tampa Bay has won two straight on the heels of an 0-3 stretch and the Bolts are coming off Saturdays regulation win over the visiting New York Islanders. Tim Wallace scored the winner with under eight minutes to play, lifting Tampa to a 4-3 win in the finale of a seven-game homestand on Saturday. The Lightning went 3-4 on the residency and will now play three straight on the road, where Tampa has a dreadful 11-19-5 record this season. Steven Stamkos posted two goals and an assist against the Islanders, while Dwayne Roloson stopped 34-of-37 shots. "Weve always battled back as a team all year," said Roloson. "Sometimes its too big of a hole for us to rally from or we fall just short, but tonight we worked hard and got the win." With 52 goals, Stamkos is six markers ahead of Pittsburghs Evgeni Malkin for the league lead. However, Malkin leads the NHL with 97 points -- 10 more than Stamkos. Philadelphias Claude Giroux is third in the league in scoring and is one point behind Stamkos with 86 points. Tampa Bay has taken two of three from the Flyers this season and tonights test is the final scheduled encounter between the teams this year. The Bolts have won five of seven in this series overall, but Philly has claimed four of the last six in the City of Brotherly Love. wholesale jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '

Every night of the Stanley Cup playoffs, TSN hockey analyst and former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan breaks down each goalies performance. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings (5) - A goaltending clinic tonight from Quick that started with a not a very busy first period. Quick only faced four scoring chances in the first frame, including a nice one-timer save on Derek Dorsett and two big saves on Mats Zuccarello - one that he creates by himself with a rebound off the glove that he reaches back with his paddle as it hits the post and the other with a terrific blocker save on the power play. He put on a show in the second, though, facing 12 scoring chances in the period, and making huge saves on Derick Brassard (twice), Brad Richards and Martin St.Louis. Quick looked like the 2012 Conn Smythe-winner in that period. The third was more of the same with big saves on Zuccarello, Richards and Marc Staal. Scoring Chances were 22 to 10 for the Rangers, but it was the Jon Quick Show tonight. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (3) - Not a busy game for Lundqvist, but he made a good save on Jeff Carter down the wall blocker-side and only faced two scoring chances in the opening period. He had no chance on the late goal by Carter, as it hit Dan Girardis skate and changed direction. Lundqvist faced six scoring chances in the second period with two goals against and no chance on either. Both were deflections that he was just unable to get to. Lundqvist faced two tough shots in the third period from Carter and Mike Richards. A tough game to sit and watch when the guy at the other end is playing great and everything that comes your way is a deflection or chance against. Cheap NBA Jerseys . -- The Chicago Bears have agreed to a one-year contract with cornerback Kelvin Hayden. The defending champion Chicago Blackhawks have returned to the number one spot in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings, their first time in the top ranking since the preseason. The Blackhawks have one regulation loss in their past 16 games and their surge, combined with a few injuries to the division-rival St. Louis Blues, gives Chicago top spot ahead of St. Louis and the Anaheim Ducks, who have lost once in their past 14 games. Its tough sledding to crack the top tier. Getting healthier, with the returns of centre Evgeni Malkin and defencemen Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang, the Pittsburgh Penguins move up from seven to four. Further down the list, the Toronto Maple Leafs move up from 20 to 16, going 4-1-2 in their past seven games, though that one -- a 7-1 home loss to the New York Rangers Saturday -- was particularly ugly. The Leafs are one spot ahead of the rising Ottawa Senators, who have a 5-1-1 record in the past seven games, jumping from 25 to 17. Despite losing centre Eric Staal to injury, the Carolina Hurricanes, winners of four straight, climb from 26 to 22. Heading the otheer way, the Los Angeles Kings were unceremoniously dumped from top spot, having lost five of their past six games and sending goaltender Martin Jones back to the AHL.dddddddddddd. The Tampa Bay Lightning sink from 14 to 21 after goaltender Ben Bishop, my midseason Vezina pick, suffered an upper-body injury. Injuries have ravaged the lineup of the Minnesota Wild, as left winger Zach Parise, centre Mikko Koivu, defenceman Jared Spurgeon and goaltender Josh Harding are all on the injured list and that results in a drop from 15 to 23. The New Jersey Devils, having lost Patrik Elias to injury again, sink from 19 to 26. Among the rest of Canadian teams, the Vancouver Canucks fall from five to seven, a couple of spots ahead of the Montreal Canadiens. The other teams goal was resting its starters. The result was predictable. Chris Douglas-Roberts dribbled into the lane and sank a short jumper as time expired, and the Charlotte Bobcats overcame a 15-point deficit in the final period to beat the Atlanta Hawks 95-93 on Monday night. Al Jefferson had 27 points and 15 rebounds for Charlotte, which remained one game behind Washington in the race for the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Gary Neal had 17. "Great shot," said Jefferson of Douglas-Roberts game-winner. "Great play. Great finish. Great win." Added Jefferson, referring to his role in the play: "Great pick!" Jeffersons turnaround jumper gave the Bobcats a 93-91 lead before Lou Williams answered with a tying jumper for Atlanta with 2.6 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Douglas-Roberts penetrated and lobbed the soft jumper as the buzzer sounded. Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said Douglas-Roberts "made a great shot." Even so, the coach wasnt satisfied, especially with his teams defence. Charlotte has won seven of eight, but Clifford isnt satisfied his team is playing at the level he wants for the playoffs. "We didnt get the defence we needed out of the starters," Clifford said. "The big thing is to be playing well, which were not." The Hawks rested starters Kyle Korver, Paul Millsap and DeMarre Carroll the full game, and also held out starters Jeff Teague and Pero Antic the final quarter when the Bobcats made their charge. "Some of our young guys got great opportunities," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "I think theres a lot to take from tonight." Mike Scott led Atlanta with 20 points. Shelvin Mack and Williams each had 13, and Teague 11. The Hawks spot as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference already was set, so Budenholzer was playing to protect his top players. "I think when youre in our situation, health and all of those things are a priority," Budenholzer said.dddddddddddd Added veteran Elton Brand: "We felt like we let it slip away, but guys got a lot of experience and that is important for us, too." By contrast, Charlotte still had much to play for. The reward for sixth is avoiding Miami in the first round. Washington beat Miami 114-93 on Monday night to protect its lead over Charlotte in the race for sixth and secure first in the conference for Indiana. The Hawks will face the Pacers in the first round. Douglas-Roberts had five points as part of the Bobcats productive bench. "We have a job to do," Douglas-Roberts said. "We did a great job of getting back into this game. Gary Neal and Luke Ridnour basically carried us up until that point. ... I feel like thats the least I can do to help these guys, the way they carried us the whole quarter." Atlanta led 50-44 at halftime and 80-65 entering the final period. The Bobcats opened the fourth period with a 19-4 run, capped by 14 consecutive points, to pull even at 84. Ridnour had all of his 10 points in the run, including the tying jumper with 6:07 remaining. Three free throws by Neal gave Charlotte its first lead of the half at 87-86. The Bobcats led 91-86 before Macks back-to-back baskets — a 3-pointer and short jumper — tied the game at 91. Kemba Walker had five points and seven assists in his returned for the Bobcats after missing two games with a sore right groin. NOTES: The Bobcats salvaged one win in the four-game season series. ... TORONTO -- Together, theyve logged 10 seasons of mostly disappointment with the Toronto Raptors. Friday night, DeMar DeRozan and Amir Johnson wrote the perfect ending to the Raptors 105-103 victory over the Boston Celtics that -- finally -- sent the Raptors into the playoffs for the first time in six years. "It makes it feel all worth it, honestly, the hard work, the struggles, the nights going home where youre just frustrated and dont want to turn on sports," DeRozan said. "It really shows you that if you stick at it and dont give up -- not to sound cliched -- it definitely pays off." DeRozan scored 30 points to top Toronto, including a fadeaway jumper with 34 seconds left. Johnson had a relatively quiet night with eight points and eight rebounds, but it was his putback on a miss by Kyle Lowry with seven seconds left that sealed the win. "Amir knows," DeRozan said. "Weve been through tough times here where we just look at each other like You cant give up now, youve got to learn from it, even when things are going bad. Thats what we did." When reporters walked into the post-game dressing room, Johnson was on his phone with his grandma Dora. "Dora the Explorer, thats what I call her," Johnson said, smiling. "She said shes proud. "This team has worked so hard," he added. "We were playing our butts off, playing through injuries, weve had our ups and downs. But we made it. It was just coincidence at the end of the game that it was me and DeMar making two clutch shots, the players who have been here the longest, so it meant a lot to clinch our spot in the playoffs." Terrence Ross added 17 points, while Greivis Vasquez finished with 15, and Jonas Valanciunas had 13 points and eight boards for Toronto (41-31). Former Raptor Jerryd Bayless led the Celtics (23-49) with 20 points, while Jeff Green finished with 16. The Raptors went into the night with a two-and-a-half game lead over Brooklyn for first in the Atlantic Division and tied with Chicago for the No. 3 seed in the East. They needed a win or a loss by the New York Knicks in Phoenix to secure their spot in the playoffs. But the win didnt come easily against a team the Raptors had beaten in Boston 99-90 two nights earlier. Against a team that has been all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, Toronto led by only single digits until late in the third quarter and took an 85-73 advantage into the fourth in front of a capacity crowd of 19,800 at the Air Canada Centre. DeRozan scored Torontos first 10 points of the fourth and his basket with 8:03 gave the Raptors a nine-point lead as they looked headed for certain victory. But the pesky Celtics fought back with a 15-2 run and a basket by Canadian Kelly Olynyk with 3:07 left put the visitors up by four. The game was tied with 1:14 to go before DeRozan scored, then Rajon Rondo replied to even it up with 27 seconds left. Then with the crowd on its feet, Johnson darted in to tip in the winner. The crowd went mad. The cheerleaders danced. Kool and the Gangs "Celebration" blared over the loudspeakers. "My hat is off to all the guys who have come through here, to DeMar DeRozan and Amir Johnson, whove been through it all, and to the fans for being understanding and being patient," said Raptors coach Dwane Casey. "It was fitting for those two guys, because theyve been through thick and thin and good times and bad times." DeRozan said it was sweet to soak in the applause from the fans, and praised them in the post-game locker-room. "It just sums up everything these past four seasons that weve been through, that it was all worth it," DeRozan said. "Since Ive been here, the fans have been sticking behind us through the tough times, you cant ask for better fans than that. It aint like these fans started coming around this season, our fans have been here from the gate, when we were playing bad, having 20-win seasons. "Just to see it turn around and be able to share that with our fans is definitely cool." Lowry, who had scored 20-plus points in the previous eight games, finished with nine points playing on a heavily-taped ankle after rolling it late in the first half when he stepped on Avery Bradleys foot. He limped to the locker-room, had it taped at halftime and returned to start the second half. Torontos first-round opponent will be determined over the final 10 regular-season games. If the playoffs started today, the Raptors would face the sixth-place Washington Wizards. Other potential first-round opponents: the Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets. By all accounts, the Raptors werent expected to do much this season. The turnaround started after a blockbuster seven-player trade in early December sent Rudy Gay to Sacramento. Casey said theres still plenty of work to be done, especially on the defensive end, before the playoffs begin. But he took a moment to talk about the growth of his team. "Its understanding of what it takes, the belief that defence wins, the commitment of: togetherness wins, binding to the culture. . .," Casey said. "The guys who have bought in, they understand what it takes to win and theyve seen the fruits of it. The roots are in the ground for what our culture is about." Olynyk, a Celtics rookie, finished with 10 in 19 minutes. Olynyk was born in Toronto and spent 12 years here before moving to Kamloops, B.C., with his family. He grew up a Raptors fan -- his mom Arlene was a scorekeeper for the NBA team. His dad Ken coached the University of Toronto basketball team for 13 seasons. The Raptors got out to a slow start and trailed for most of the first quarter despite shooting 58 per cent, but came to life in time to put together a 32-26 lead going into the second. A driving layup by DeRozan six minutes into the second quarter gave the Raptors a nine-point advantage, but the Celtics used a 13-3 run to take a one-point lead two minutes before halftime. Toronto took a 56-53 lead into the locker-room at the break. The Raptors finally put together a double-digit lead in the third, taking a 12-point lead on a three by Vasquez with 1:48 to play. NOTES: Casey said injured Patrick Patterson is "a little sore but making great progress." Casey said Patterson, a key player off the bench, could return to action Sunday or Monday. . . Russian left-hander Ekaterina Makarova, seeded 22nd, leveled the sluggish Polish star Radwanska in 6-3, 6-0 fashion in fourth-round action on the No. 3 Court. Radwanska reached the final here two years ago, but lost to Serena Williams. The sixth-seeded Czech lefty Kvitova blew past Chinese Peng Shuai 6-3, 6-2 to reach the round of eight here for a fifth year in a row. Kvitova was the Wimbledon champ in 2011 and reached the semifinals the year before that. Her quarterfinal opponent will be surprise fellow Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki exited the draw, losing 6-2, 7-5 to the unseeded Zahlavova Strycova on Day 7. Zahlavova Strycova finished with a lopsided 31-11 advantage in winners and advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal on her sixth match point. She had not taken a set in three previous meetings with her 16th-seeded Danish counterpart. The 43-ranked Zahlavova Strycova has now beaten seeded players in three consecutive matches. Wozniacki has never made it past the fourth round at the All England Club. Lucie Safarova beat Tereza Smitkova 6-0, 6-2 in an all-Czech fourth-round matchup. The 23rd-seeded Safarova will meet Makarova in the quarterfinals. Czech women went 3-1 on Monday, with the only loss coming in the all-Czech Safarova-Smitkova affair, and this marks the first time that three Czech women have reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon..dddddddddddd In some third-round action on Day 7, 19th-seeded German slugger Sabine Lisicki upset 11th-seeded former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Ivanovic captured her first-ever grass-court title a few weeks ago in Birmingham, but has never fared well on the lawns at Wimbledon, having failed to get past the fourth round here now the last seven years. Lisicki, meanwhile, thrives on the grass at the AEC, where she was last years surprise runner-up and reached at least the quarterfinals here in her previous four trips. Up next for the German will be Kazakhstans Yaroslava Shvedova, who moved on when American Madison Keys pulled out of their third-round match because of a left thigh injury. The two were scheduled to complete their match on Monday after Shvedova took the first set 7-6 (9-7) and things were tied at 6-6 in the second set before darkness forced the suspension of play on Saturday. Keys exit leaves the womens draw without any Americans, and for the first time since 1911, there are no Americans, male of female, playing in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Two quarterfinals will be staged on Tuesday, as Kvitova will tangle with Zahlavova Strycova and Makarova will battle Safarova. And the fourth round is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, as third-seeded French Open runner-up Simona Halep will face Kazakhstans Zarina Diyas, fifth- seeded French Open champ Maria Sharapova will battle ninth-seeded German Angelique Kerber and Lisicki will take on Shvedova. Sharapova captured her lone Wimbledon title in 2004 and was the 2011 runner-up here to Kvitova. wholesale jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap nfl jerseys ' ' '

The Rangers force Game Six and the Wild even the score; notes on Zuccarello, St. Louis, Cooke, Toews and more. RANGERS ROCK PENGUINS Facing elimination, the New York Rangers invaded Pittsburgh, earned a first-period lead and never let the Penguins back into it, winning 5-1 in Game Five, forcing Game Six back in Manhattan. Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello each had three points for the Rangers, while LW Chris Kreider and D Ryan McDonagh each contributed a goal and an assist. Brassard, who was a point-per-game player for the Rangers in a dozen playoff games last year, now has six points (3 G, 3 A) in 12 playoff games this season, while Zuccarello is up to eight points (3 G, 5 A). Zuccarello also had the best possession stats for the Rangers, with 16 shot attempts for and seven against. The Blueshirts had 69.6% of the attempts with Zuccarello on the ice and 48.6% when he was off the ice. This was only Kreiders second game of the playoffs, and he was effective on a line with Derek Stepan and Rick Nash. Both Kreider and Brassard tied for the Rangers team lead with six hits. McDonagh, who only had one assist in 11 playoff games prior to Game Four, had a goal and an assist, with both points coming on the previously beleaguered Rangers power play. After scoring two goals on three attempts with the man advantage, maybe the Rangers are ready to leave that PP slump in the rearview mirror. After getting annihilated by Pittsburghs Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in Game Four, the Rangers (led by McDonagh and Dan Girardi) were much more effective against that duo in Game Five. While Malkin scored a goal, Crosby was on for 13 shot attempts for and 18 against. The inspirational story for the Rangers was veteran RW Martin St. Louis, playing a day after his mother died suddenly. St. Louis didnt have his best game, but the Rangers rallied around him and G Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 of 32 Pittsburgh shots to keep the series going. The Penguins line of James Neal, Jussi Jokinen and Brandon Sutter didnt fare too well in the possession game. Neal, in particular, was on the ice for 28.6% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts when he was on the ice, while the Penguins had 54.0% of the shot attempts with Neal off the ice. In a must-win game, the Rangers played with an urgency that they havent shown in this series and are rewarded with a home date for Game Six. Theyre not out of the woods, by any means, but deserve credit for a big road win. WILD AT HEART The Minnesota Wild dominated play against the Chicago Blackhawks and won Game Four by a 4-2 score, evening the series at two games apiece. Wild defencemen Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter each had two points. Spurgeon, who had a goal and an assist, now has five points in the playoffs. Suter is up to seven. Wild LW Matt Cooke returned to the lineup, after serving a seven-game suspension and replaced Matt Moulson, who is out with a lower-body injury. Cooke was an impact player for Minnesota, playing a physical game (a game-high five hits), and chipping in an assist on the first goal of the game. He set the tone. Wild forwards Mikael Granlund, Erik Haula and Jason Pominville were all on for better than 70% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts, while Blackhawks RW Ben Smith had a game to forget, on for zero 5-on-5 shot attempts and 13 against. Smith spent the first half of the game on a line with Jonathan Toews, who was on for seven attempts for and 21 against, his 25% Corsi% was his lowest of the year. Toews faced the Wilds top defence pair, Suter and Jonas Brodin, for most of the night. Blackhawks RW Marian Hossa had two assists and D Brent Seabrook had one; they are tied for Chicagos playoff scoring lead with 10 points. Neither goaltender, Chicagos Corey Crawford or Minnesotas Ilya Bryzgalov, looked sharp, but with the Wild controlling play, they had more opportunities to take advantage against Crawford. In front of a rowdy home crowd, the Wild continued their winning ways, now 5-0 at home in the postseason. If theyre going to pull off the upset, though, they are going to need to win at least one in Chicago. Also, Matt Niskanens power play goal went through the legs. He was not at the top of his expected game and has more to give. Carey Price, Montreal (3) - Price made three huge saves in overtime (on Alex Killorn, Teddy Purcell and Nikita Kucherov), on a night where he faced few sshots and had a few goals that - by his standards - he would stop on a regular night.dddddddddddd Anders Lindback, Tampa Bay (3) - Lindback gave them a chance to win, as the Habs had most of the shots and chances in Game 1. The goals by Lars Eller and Thomas Vanek goals were not his best work, but he made more than enough stops to keep them in the game. Frederik Andersen, Anaheim (3) - He made two big saves early in the game on Jamie Benn and Alex Chiasson. Not much could be done on two of the three goals he allowed, as Chiasson was a screen. But he was very good in tight on Wednesday night using his feet and post protection. Kari Lehtonen, Dallas (2) - Lehtonen did not get much help or chances on three of the four goals he allowed. He had rebound issues all night, looked unsettled at times on perimeter shots and was deep on screen shots where hes usually more aggressive. Wales beat the Pumas in 2009 then endured 10 losses and a draw with Fiji in autumn tests until Saturdays clinical victory, its biggest against the visitors. The Six Nations champion heaped more misery on the Pumas, whose eighth straight defeat equaled their worst ever run from 1910-36. Looking tired, Argentina move on to Italy next week. Wales flattered in the first half to lead 23-3, a comfort they used in the second half to cut down their errors and limit Argentinas threat. The Welsh finished with two converted tries that spoke to their speed and power. Leigh Halfpenny padded the four tries with eight successful goalkicks, missing only once. Nicolas Sanchez kicked both penalties for Argentina, hit the post with another, and was short with a dropped goal attempt, but while the Pumas gave the ball plenty of air, the support play was lacking and the Welsh defence was staunch. Wales scored two tries in the first half. The first was opportunistic and the second a perfectly executed planned move.dddddddddddd In the eighth minute, Sanchez was surprised by a pass from flanker Julio Farias Cabello, juggled it and knocked it into the hands of Wales scrumhalf Mike Phillips, who sped 75 metres to score. While Justin Tipuric was in the sin-bin for an off-the-ball tackle, Argentina couldnt take advantage, but Wales scored with Halfpennys second penalty. Halfway through the half, Alun-Wyn Jones tapped lineout ball down to Phillips, who drew the flankers out and passed inside for North to charge through a gaping hole 30 metres out. North easily beat the last defender for his 13th test try. Wales took nearly another half an hour to score its third try. From quick scrum ball, Halfpenny joined the backline and fed left wing Liam Williams, who fended off his marker and found No. 8 Toby Faletau inside to run in untouched. JARAGUA DO SU, SANTA CATARINA, Brazil -- In a battle of technical strikers, Lyoto Machida (21-4) outpointed Gegard Mousasi (34-4-2) and may soon challenge for the UFCs middleweight title. Machidas five-round win over Mousasi served as the main event of Saturdays "UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Mousasi" event, in Jaragua do Su, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Machida, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, was the faster fighter from the start, darting in and out of range while delivering rapid-fire punches and a few impressive high kicks. The patient Mousasi began to increase his pressure as the fight wore on, but he struggled to pin down the elusive Machida and consistently found it impossible to hit the target. Mousasi was never out of the fight, and his power punches left him as a danger through all 25 minutes of the bout, but Machida simply proved to be a little too fast and too tricky, and was awarded a unanimous-decision win with scores of 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45. "I always want to score a knockout or a submission," Machida said after the win. "Mousasi is a hard fighter, and every detail makes difference. Im already thinking about the belt, but this is something UFC has to decide." In the nights co-feature, Brazilian submission ace Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (20-3) won his third consecutive UFC fight with an impressive decision win over Francis Carmont (22-, a transplanted Frenchman who trains at Montreals Tristar Gym. Souza, a former Strikeforce champion who now has his eye on UFC gold, controlled the action from the start, taking the fight to the floor and keeping the superior position throughout much of the 15-minute fight. Carmont displayed ample defensive skills, shrugging off multiple submission attempts in hopes of mounting a counterattack. However, he was never able to shake free and find the space he needed to operate, and Souza cruised to the decision win. Afterward, the top-ranked Souza called for a title shot but insisted hell keep knocking off fellow contenders if necessary to get there. "I want the champ," Souza said through a translator. "I want whoever has the belt. And if the UFC doesnt think Im ready for that, just put anyone ahead of me and Ill get over them." In additional main-card action, Brazilian welterweight Erick Silva (16-4) made quick work of late replacement Takenori Sato (17-9-7). The 29-year-old Silva needed just 52 seconds to dispatch of his overmatched opponent, stopping an early takedown and then unloading a barrage of massive punches as Sato refused to let go of a single-leg attempt. Silva, long considered a top prospect at 170 pounds, said his surprising loss to Dong Hyun Kim this past October served as motivation for the spectacular performance. "I needed a win, but at no point did I feel pressured," Silva said. "Losing my last fight served as motivation, not as pressure. I trained very hard, and it was the best camp of my life. I was the first to arrive in the gym and the last one to leave. "I was very hungry for the win. The result couldnt have been different." Brazilian welterweight Viscardi Andrade nearly earned a first-round knockout win over Swedish fighter Nicholas Musoke (12-2). Instead, he left the octagon with a loss by decision. In the first round, Andrade delivered a crushing right hand that sent Musoke to the floor. But Andrade celebrated too soon, raising his hands in the air rather than pushing forward to seal the result. Musoke somehow recovered from the thunderous blow and seized momentum back for the rest of the contest, using technical striking and superior grappling to claims rounds two and three on the judges scorecards and taking home a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three cards. "Its never the plan to get hit that hard in the beginning," Musoke said. "All in all, happy with the win, but not at all with my performance, especially with the way the fight started. I knew hed come out hard, although I did think Id be able to avoid his punches a bit better." In the nights first main-card contest, Brazilian featherweight Charles Oliveira earned a third-round submission win over Englishman Andy Ogle. At the evenings post-event news conference, Machida and Mousasi were each awarded $50,000 for the evenings "Fight of the Night" bonus. Meanwhile, Silva and Oliveira each earned $50,000 bonuses in the UFCs new "Performance Bonus" awards, which replace the long-customary "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night" awards. MIAMI -- It took eight starts, but Jacob deGrom finally has a win in the big leagues. deGrom pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his first major league win for the New York Mets in a 4-0 victory against the Miami Marlins on Saturday. "To have a performance like that and get the win feels good," said deGrom. "I have a lot of people here from the Daytona area, which is only about four hours away, and my whole family is here." deGrom (1-4), who was the first Mets starting pitcher to go winless in his first seven starts, struck out seven as he allowed five hits and issued three walks. "He had all his pitches working and he was throwing them all for strikes at any count," Mets third baseman David Wright said. "Its a lot of fun to play defence behind him because he works so quickly and effectively." Lucas Duda hit a two-run home run, his 10th, and Wright had three hits and an RBI for New York, which has won three of four. It was the second shutout in the series for the Mets as Zack Wheeler tossed a 1-0 shut out on Thursday. "Right now were in a little bit of a spell where were not able to get the consecutive hits and get a little bit of a rally going, but we will," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. Jeurys Familia pitched the eighth and Jenrry Mejia came in for the ninth to preserve the shut out. Marlins starter Tom Koehler (5-6) retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing two runs and four hits in seven innings while striking out eight. "It was nice to get through seven and get out of the jam in the sixth, but at the same time its a little frustrating giving up those two runs and not really getting those bunts down -- thats really kind of eating at me right now," Koehler said. Miami second baseman Rafael Furcal left the game in the fourth inning with a left calf and hamstring and injury after grounding out to end the third. Furcal, who missed the first 2 1-2 months of the season with hamstring and groin injuries, was scheduled to have an MRI after the game. "It definitely doesnt sound good," Redmond said. Before the game shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria was scratched from the starting lineup with soreness in his elbow on his throwing arm, but could be in the lineup on Sunday. "He was availabe if we needed him to hit, I think the throwing was the biggest concern for him today, but Im anticipating him being ready for tomorrow, but well see," Redmond said. Chris Young hit a two-out single in the fourth to give the Mets a 1-0 lead and Wright singled home a run in the sixth for a two-run advantage. Miamis best opportunity to score came in the sixth after Giancarlo Stanton stole third base with one out, but deGrom retired the next two batters to end the threat. "He made some real, real good pitches with his slider today, and he used his change-up to right handers effectively today," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He certainly deserved to win." Dudas home run to right field came off Chris Hatcher in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 4-0 cushion. RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Top-ranked Rafael Nadal survived a scare at the Rio Open on Saturday, fighting off two match points before defeating fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10) to advance to the final. Nadal will next face Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine, who upset second-seeded David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4 on Rios outdoor clay. Nadal has been almost unbeatable on clay in his career, compiling a 297-21 record, the best in the Open era. His last loss on the surface was 10 months ago against Novak Djokovic in the Monte Carlo Masters. But this was not his night as he needed nearly three hours to defeat Andujar. Nadal is returning from a back injury he sustained in the final of the Australian Open four weeks ago -- a match he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka. "I felt empty the whole match," he said. "It was very humid, and this was the toughest day of all. I just didnt feel that great physically, and Im not talking about the back. I just didnt feel that great. "It was close because he played well, and I didnt play my best," Nadal added. Nadal acknowledged his victory was lucky. "The tiebreak was a lottery," he said. "But I played better in the tiebreak than the rest of the match." Andujar had two match points in the third-set tiebreaker but couldnt convert either. "I played one of the best matches of my life," he said. "Maybe the best. But I had a great one across (the net) from me." Dolgopolov, who had beaten Ferrer only once in seven previous matches, won handily and didnt flinch. "I always have these type matches with him, and usually at the end he would beat me," the Ukrainian said. "I knew Id have to make those shots. If you dont win the points against him, he takes it away. Im really happy I didnt get tight and give away a lot of shots." Dolgopolov has won two previous ATP titles. Ferrer won the Copa Claro last weekend in Buenos Aires, his third consecutive title in that clay-court event. He has 21 ATP titles. In the womens tournament, top-seeded Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic and fifth-seeded Kurumi Nara of Japan will face off in the final. Zakopalova defeated local hope Teliana Pereira 6-2, 6-1, and Nara won over Nastassja Burnett of Italy 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Zakopalova will be aiming for her third WTA singles title. She won two in 2004, and has since been a losing finalist 11 times. This will be Naras first WTA singles final. "Im very surprised because its on a clay court," said Nara, a university student who prefers hard courts. Ted Ginn Jr Womens Jersey . Louis Blues at the MTS Centre tonight. WASHINGTON -- With captain Alex Ovechkin out, the Washington Capitals needed someone to pick up the scoring slack. Mathieu Perreault filled the role -- and then some. Perreault got his first career hat trick, including the tie-breaking goal in the third period, to lead the Capitals to a 5-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night. "This is the best feeling ever," Perreault said. "Getting three goals and we win the game, this is awesome." Perreaults third goal of the game came 7:18 into the third period when he put in a rebound off Roman Hamrliks shot to give Washington the lead. The score broke a three-all tie and brought hats raining down onto the Verizon Center ice. "It was outstanding," forward Matt Hendricks said. "Kids been working extremely hard all season. Hes been in and out of the lineup. He comes to the rink with that smile on his face and hes got a great personality, great guy to be around. I feel great for him. Im so happy. Everybody else in this room Im sure feels the same way." Rich Peverley, Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand scored for Boston in the final game for both teams before the all-star break. The Capitals were without Ovechkin, who was serving the first game of a three-game suspension for a hit on Pittsburgh defenceman Zbynek Michalek in Washingtons loss Sunday. Ovechkin also announced Tuesday he would skip the NHL all-star game, saying, "My heart is not there." Washington was already missing another key offensive player: centre Nicklas Backstrom, who missed his 10th straight game after being elbowed in the head. "Youre not going to replace Alex, but as a committee were going to have to get the goals," Washington coach Dale Hunter said before the game. "We need people to step up." Perrault certainly did. His first goal came at 2:55 in the second period, 41 seconds after Cody Eakin scored Washingtons first goal. Perreault brought the puck down the centre of the ice, passed to Alexander Semin on the right side, and Semin sent it back to Perreault, who was between the circles. Perrault flipped the puck past Boston goalie Tuukka Rusk after he had moved to cut off a possible Semin shot. The teams then traded scores off turnovers. Seguin picked off a pass from Capitals defenceman John Carlson in Washingtons zone and scored at 12:21 in the second. Perreault put the Capitals ahead again about two minutes later, stealing a pass in the middle of the ice and converting on a breakaway for his second of the game. "That breakaway was one of my nicest goals," Perreault said. "But that third one, when you get that hat trick, its awesome. The crowd gets into it, and the hats are going onto the ice -- its just awesome." Perreault was also at the centre of Bostons goal late in the second period which tied the game at three, when he was whistled for a hooking penalty with about three minutes to play in the period. Boston took advantage as Marchand banged in a rebound with 2:18 left. Perreaults third goal gave Washington the lead, and Dennis Wideman had an empty-net goal in the final minute to secure the victory. "Not a very good game for us to end with before the break, no doubt," said Boston coach Claude Julien. "Probably the positive thing is weve got five days to think about that, and come back hopefully refreshed, rejuvenated and playing with a lot more energy." While the Bruins head into the all star break disappointed, the Capitals ended the first half of the season on a high note after struggling at times this season. "I think it was one of the biggest (wins) of the year," Hendricks said. "We didnt have all of our skill in the lineup, we didnt have our leader in Ovi. We really knew we had to play as a team tonight, come together as a great hockey team, and I think we did that." NOTES: Boston RW Nathan Horton sat out his first game of the season with what Julien termed a "mild concussion." Julien said he hoped Horton would be able to return after the all-star break. ... Boston G Tim Thomas, who skipped Mondays White House ceremony honouring the teams Stanley Cup win last season, did not play. ... Hunter said he didnt expect Ovechkin to be handed a three-game suspension. "I was surprised it was as harsh as it was," the coach said before the game.
