OAKLAND, Calif. Larry Ogunjobi Browns Jersey . -- The Golden State Warriors are taking another chance on a television analyst and former NBA guard who has never been a head coach at any level. The Warriors won the bidding war with the New York Knicks for Steve Kerr on Wednesday, hiring him away from the TNT broadcast table to be their coach. Kerr agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal with Golden State, said his agent, Mike Tannenbaum. The Warriors confirmed the agreement Wednesday night and said they will introduce Kerr at a news conference after the contract is complete. Kerr had been in talks with the Knicks about becoming their coach since Phil Jackson took over as team president in March. He won three titles playing for Jackson in Chicago and another two under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. Kerr told NBA.com, which first reported the agreement, that going to Golden State "just felt like the right move on many levels." He said his daughter plays volleyball nearby at the University of California, Berkeley, his oldest son is in college in San Diego and his youngest son is a junior in high school. Kerr called the offer to coach the Knicks a "tantalizing" opportunity. He said it was "agonizing" to say no to Jackson "because of what I think of him and what hes done for my career." "I told Phil, I think I have to pursue this other opportunity," Kerr told the website. "He gave me his blessing. He said. Go look at it, and do what was in my heart." Kerr, 48, said last month that he has wanted to coach since stepping down after three seasons as general manager of the Phoenix Suns in June 2010. And while the lure of rebuilding a flagship franchise with his mentor at Madison Square Garden looked appealing, the chance to coach a Western Conference contender in his home state proved to be too much. Kerr replaces Mark Jackson, who was fired by the Warriors on May 6 after three seasons and back-to-back playoff appearances -- mostly due to a sour relationship between him and team management. The Warriors job is certainly a far more attractive one than when owner Joe Lacob hired Jackson away from the ESPN/ABC broadcast table in June 2011. The Warriors are coming off a 51-win season and consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in 20 years, and theyve surrounded star Stephen Curry with a talented young core. Kerr became the hottest coaching candidate on the market after Phil Jackson started courting him to the Knicks. Kerr also has close ties to Lacob, his son, assistant GM Kirk Lacob, and Warriors President Rick Welts, who worked in Phoenixs front office during Kerrs time as Suns general manager. Given the tension that built between Jackson and Warriors management last season -- and the back-and-forth that played out between them in the media after Jackson was dismissed -- having an established relationship with Kerr was a big reason Lacob wanted him as coach. Lacob lauded Kerr as a candidate last week and defended the decision to change coaches -- which has been debated at great lengths in the basketball-united Bay Area. He compared the decision to how he built his fortune as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley. Lacob said theres a different person to lead a business at different stages of development, and the Warriors have gone from a "startup" company to an organization looking to maximize its output. "Or in this case win an NBA championship," he said. "And we just felt overall we needed a different person to go forward and get to the next level." And while Kerr has no coaching experience, he played 15 seasons and -- also similar to Mark Jackson -- has been around some of the most successful sideline leaders. Kerr has credited Phil Jackson and Tex Winter for most of his basketball knowledge. Winter taught the triangle offence -- which Kerr would not commit to running with the Warriors -- and was a longtime assistant for Jackson, who used the system to win an NBA-record 11 championships as a coach of the Bulls and Lakers. Golden State also spoke with former Orlando Magic and Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy during its search. Van Gundy agreed to a $35 million, five-year deal with Detroit on Tuesday after the Pistons also gave him control of basketball operations -- something the Warriors wouldnt do with general manager Bob Myers and Kirk Lacob in place. The Warriors met with Kerr again on Tuesday night in Oklahoma City, where Kerr was calling the Thunder-Clippers game. NEW YORK -- Miles Mikolas earned his first win as a starter, pitching into the eighth inning Monday night and leading the Texas Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the sloppy New York Yankees. Day 23 in 100 words or less It was a day for central defenders and set-piece goals. Claudio Marchisio Jersey . Time to go through the motions and squeeze out a victory had passed. It was a day for the serious World Cup contenders to step up and show us what they had. Brazil and Germany, with eight World Cups between them, did just that and now meet each other in Tuesdays semifinal. Germany 1-0 France Twenty years ago next week Germany were almost there. Just after 1:30pm in the afternoon, inside the blistering heat of Giants Stadium, New Jersey, the Germans led 1-0 in a World Cup quarterfinal against Bulgaria with 15 minutes left in the match. The reigning World Champions were about to become the first ever country to reach four straight World Cup semifinals. Bulgaria suddenly scored two goals in three minutes and in a New York minute the Germans were going home. The football world was stunned. No one since has made the final four of the World Cup four times in a row. Until today. Fittingly, it was Germany again, playing on another hot afternoon, and up a goal on their opponents. This time, though, there was no meltdown in the heat. Joachim Lows team havent been near their best in Brazil since a blistering opening 30 minutes against Portugal but this was their best showing since that showing in Salvador 18 days ago. It was a statement of intent from Lows side. A statement that they can win games in such a manner. "You are not only the best side in the world, you are the best side I have ever seen." That is what Low said to Xavi after Spain had defeated his German team in the semifinal four years ago. Spain won 1-0 that day, through a headed goal, scored by a centre-back from a set-piece. Low, then, will surely have been thinking about that when his team beat France the same way. Goalscorer Mats Hummels had a wonderful match. He would have been man of the match even if Germanys goal had been scored by someone else. Behind him, Manuel Neuer, earning his 50th cap, was also impressive again, making two outstanding saves, with one denying Karim Benzema in the final moments. Philipp Lahm at right back wasnt anywhere near his best but his positioning made sense for the collective balance of the side. Thats because it allowed Sami Khedira to come into midfield and he made a big difference. The Real Madrid man is clearly still not at his peak after a long layoff through injury but his penetrating runs into space makes Germany more flexible in attack and, subsequently, harder to defend against. With Thomas Muller still a menace in attack, either on the right or central, all of this means Low is building a side with a strong spine. You do not need to have 11 players all at the top of their game to win a World Cup. This is good news for Mesut Ozil and whoever plays alongside him and Muller. Ozil is clearly struggling inside this system but with other players excelling it is not as vital. Lows mind will be full of exceptional memories of Ozil performing brilliantly at the last two major tournaments. He remains good at spatial awareness and in possession when given outlets close by. However, he is far from at his best and his reputation as a player who needs a lot of love shows he is incredibly low on confidence. He is, however, like all of his teammates, just two wins away from being a world champion. France go home with their heads held high and will be a force on home soil at Euro 2016. The Champions League has been a wonderful stage for many to show they can compete at a high level, while Ligue 1 continues to produce some sensational young players not even seen in Brazil. For those who were in Brazil, this tournament, unlike the past two, will have provided them a lot of good lessons in cohesion both on and off the field. Didier Deschamps deserves a lot of credit for turning Les Bleus into a team their nation loves once again, just nine months after many couldnt stand them anymore. Brazil 2-1 Colombia Where do we start? Here is what we DO know: Brazil scored two goals via set pieces and now have only scored two goals from open play in four games against Croatia, Mexico, Chile and Colombia at this World Cup. Games against Cameroon should not count when evaluating their attack. The game was very physical. The ref was very average. If you followed the match on Twitter there is a good chance that you think Brazil were very, very fortunate. Colombia, however, did very little in the match until going down 2-0. Brazils intensity early in the match was unlike anything we have seen from the hosts so far and, James Rodriguez aside, Jose Pekermans team look like a side that is only good enough to reach the last eight. Thiago Silva was absolutely magnificent in defence. His suspension for the game against Germany is enormous. James Rodriguez got even better, despite the loss. He was a marked man and on a completely different level than his teammates yet he was still sensational, finding space and creating goal-scoring opportunities. He deserved his sixth goal of the World Cup. We bid farewell to Colombia. They played a wonderful part in making this a special World Cup and gave us the true star of this tournament. However, on this night, the rest of the team was shown to be what they are. Juan Cuadrado is very good and had a great tournament but the rest were just good. Good enough to take Colombia to the last eight for the first time. It appears as this column goes to press that Neymar is out of the World Cup. Here is what we do NOT know: How good are Brazil? This is the biggest question going forward. Despite getting by two good sides they look very average relying on Neymars pace and creativity in the final third. Without Neymar, they have no real plan B in attack. Even when they are scoring, he is the one creating them. Neymars speed again made a massive difference. You will remember David Luizs goal against Chile but moments earlier it was Neymar whose run got Brazil into that territory. They will miss many things without Neymar but his pace on counters is one the biggest things. Here is a shot of how Brazil lined up in that game. You will see the ball is on the right as #7 Hulk defends his flank. Already Neymar is anticipating a quick counter, wanting to go to the left…. Once that counter happens he is away to press…. Then he wins the ball and is behind the defender…. Here is the build up to the corner won by Brazil that led to their opening goal. Colombia in possession with Neymar lurking and Cristian Zapata deep to deal with his speed….. Brazil win it back and transition with Neymar immediately heading into that zone once again… Neymar is now in possession and Zapata is losing the race despite the head start… Zapata must force it into a corner – out of nothing and all because of the quick counter made by Neymar… Neymar has carried this team on his back so far and now that back can not carry the nation any more. Man of the day Nominees David Luiz – a sensational free kick gave Brazil the moment of the World Cup so far. Thiago Silva – opened the scoring with a key early goal and was magnificent in defence throughout. James Rodriguez – His name is James. James Rodriguez. No one should ever mispronounce his name ever again. A global star was born in Brazil. Manuel Neuer – the German goalkeeper was, once again, commanding in goal on the big occasion. Got his 50th cap against France and another 50 will be on their way. Mats Hummels – Germany needed a defensive hero very badly and the Borussia Dortmund man returned from the flu to win the game for Joachim Lows side. The winner… David Luiz – He may not have been the best player on the field but it was very special for a Brazilian to score a 35 yard free kick with the SIDE of his foot in such a monumental match. What comes next? Argentina vs Belgium (12pm/9am) and Netherlands vs Costa Rica (4pm/1pm) Burning question for tomorrow Argentina have gone through this World Cup with one great player and ten average ones. Can one player step up from average to good to help Lionel Messi and dispose of Belgium? Key stat of day 23 Mats Hummels scored the 30th headed goal at the World Cup. His shot was deflected by the stick of defenceman Jonas Brodin and popped into the air. Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper appeared to lose sight of the puck, and it bounced between his pads just before he dropped. Iginla was smiling along the boards when his teammates came to congratulate him. "So it was a tough, but good learning experience for me as a martial artist and a UFC fighter to deal with that pressure and perform under it. "Since then Ive had a lot of big fights. Ive been able to deal with it great since then. So I see no difference going back there and fighting there again." Though MacDonald has since etched his spot in the welterweight title picture, consistency has been a problem. If he has struggled in one area, its been the frequency within which hes competed. Since joining the UFC roster in early 2010, hes managed only two fights per year due to a variety of injuries. MacDonald has attributed many of these to over-training and not knowing when to dial back his efforts. However, MacDonald appears to have found his groove as of late. His scrap with Woodley not only marks his second of 2014, but also his fourth in the past 12 months. MacDonald said hes finally hit the right balance. "In a years time Ive been very busy and Ive been focused," MacDonald said. "My trainings been good. Ive been training very smart and been able to stay healthy. Obviously there are some injuries that are out of your control, but others are in your control and I think its just up to your experience as a martial artist. You know, growing up in your training and seeing what works for you. Im starting to figure out a rhythm that works for me. "I understand how to warm my body up, how to spar more technically and put less stress on my system. Its been a combination of a lot of things." MacDonald said a big piece of the puzzle has also been separating east coast from west coast. While in Montreal and New York, hes 100 - percent focused on training. However, after each fight, he spends time with family and friends back in B.C. The Tristar fighter said this allows him to recharge his batteries. "I take a month back home after my fights," MacDonald stated. "After all the hard training, I relax, but I also stay busy and stay active. I go into the gyms where I used to train with all the people that I know. I work with them — nothing crazy; just once a day. I spend my time there and enjoy it with family. It makes me happy. When I come out to Montreal and New York, I focus on my training and I feel energized." With his training formula firmly in place, MacDonald said he cant wait to put on a show in his home province. "It feels great," MacDonald began. "I love fighting in Canada and being in Vancouver is even better because after the fight Im right at home. I get to see my family and I dont have to fly anywhere. CALGARY -- Mike Cammalleri has had a knack for scoring game-winning goals for the Calgary Flames lately. DAngelo Russell Youth Jersey . "They came back in the second with three relatively quick ones and that can deflate teams sometimes, but I think thats been a hallmark of our game is that response and the never-say-die attitude," Westgarth said. Grade: D Pick Six: Week Five Neil Reynolds takes a look at the biggest talking points from week five NFC NORTHMinnesota Vikings (W 31-13 v Houston)The only undefeated team left in football. Thats enough to earn them an A+ right there, but add to that the fact that their dominant defence is still yet to allow more than 16 points in a game this season, and their offence is rolling along with back-up QB and RBs in tow. They didnt just beat a decent Houston Texans team, they embarrassed them. Grade: A+ Highlights of the Houston Texans clash with the Minnesota Vikings in week five of the NFL Detroit Lions (W 24-23 v Philadelphia)Detroit snapped a three-game losing skid with a hard-fought win over a previously undefeated Philadelphia. The Lions scored on all three of their possessions in the first half, building a 21-7 lead late in the second quarter, but stalled badly after the break, relying on an interception of Wentz - his first in the NFL - to secure a narrow win late on. Grade: B Highlights of the Philadelphia Eagles clash against the Detroit Lions in week five of the NFL Green Bay Packers (W 23-26 v New York Giants)This Packers team are still a tad unconvincing, despite moving to 3-1 on the season with a good win over the Giants late on Sunday night. Aaron Rodgers play was particularly off colour for much of the contest, with two first-half picks, and a completion percentage that sat below 50 for much of the game. Still, they did enough to get the W. Grade: B- Highlights of the New York Giants clash with the New York Giants in week five of the NFL Chicago Bears (L 23-29 @ Indianapolis)You cant fault the efforts of Brian Hoyer (33 of 43 passing, 397 yards, 2 TDs) and Jordan Howard (118 yards rushing, 45 yards receiving, 1TD), but the Bears somehow still contrived to lose their fourth game on the year. Grade: DNFC SOUTHAtlanta Falcons (W 23-16 @ Denver)How do you follow up a 300-yard receiving game, Julio Jones? Oh, with just 29 yards on two catches. In fairness, Denvers No Fly Zone defence was always likely to provide a stern follow-up, and it mattered little as Atlantas D produced a dominant display of its own, sacking rookie Broncos QB, Paxton Lynch, six times. Grade: A- Highlights of the Atlanta Falcons clash against Denver Broncos in week five of the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers (W 17-14 @ Carolina)The Buccaneers won this but they could, and possibly should have lost it. Erratic decisions from quarterback Jameis Winston put the team under pressure, and kicker Roberto Aguayo missed two field goals before scoring a 38-yard attempt to clinch victory. Fortunately for Tampa, the defence did deliver, forcing four turnovers including an end zone interception. Grade: C+Carolina Panthers (L 17-14 v Tampa Bay)Sorely missing Cam Newtons mobility and ingenuity, the Panthers created winning opportunities but struggled to maintain drives under back-up Derek Anderson. Carolina led the game in rushing and receiving yards despite ten minutes less on the field, but four costly interceptions was enough to hand this one to their divisional rivals. Grade: D-New Orleans Saints (Bye week)NFC WESTArizona Cardinals (W 33-21 @ San Francisco)Drew Stanton threw two touchdown passes to Larry Fitzgerald in his first start for two years, as the Cardinals survived a week without injured starter Carson Palmer. Stanton wasnt exactly exemplary, only completing 11 of 27 for 124 yards, but Arizona didnt turn the ball over, and that was enough to edge out the 49ers. Grade: B Highlights of the Arizona Cardinals clash with the San Francisco 49ers in week five of the NFL Loos Angeles Rams (L 19-30 v Buffalo)The Rams suffered their first defeat in Los Angeles, and their first since their Week One 28-0 stuffing in San Francisco - which seems a long time ago now. No, not Rob Gronkowski, yet… Grade: A Highlights of New England Patriots clash with the Cleveland Browns in week five of the NFL Buffalo Bills (W 30-19 @ Los Angeles)The Bills edged out the Rams in a battle of two of the NFLs better defences. Though he didnt get the touchdown his display deserved, LeSean McCoys 150 yards on the ground made much of the difference as Buffalo earned their third straight win. Grade: B+ Highlights of the Buffalo Bills clash with the Los Angeles Rams in week five of the NFL New York Jets (L 13-31 @ Pittsburgh)The Jets, meanwhile, have suffered three consecutive defeats since besting the Billis, of all teams, in Week Two. They were utterly blown apart by Big Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday - the veteran QB torching their defence for 380 yards and four touchdowns. Grade: D-Miami Dolphins (L 17-30 v Tennessee)The Dolphins have only an overtime victory over the winless Cleveland Browns to show from their season so far, and with a performance like Sundays its easy to see why. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill was particularly poor, with just 191 yards passing and two interceptions. Grade: EAFC NORTHPittsburgh Steelers (W 31-13 v New York Jets)What a stunner from Sammie Coates! Sure, it was Big Ben who got him the ball, but weve already mentioned him (see Jets grade above), and Coates deserves some column inches too. The pacy wide receiver broke off 139 yards from six catches, including two TDs - the first of which he took 72 yards to the house. Grade: A Highlights from the Pittsburgh Steelers clash against the New York Jets in week five of the NFL Baltimore Ravens (L 10-16 v Washington)Offensive co-ordinator, Marc Trestman, has paid with his job after the Ravens lost a second in a row at home, and his offence scored only three points in the contest following a touchdown on their opening possession. On the plus side though Ravens fans, the last time your team made an offensive co-ordinator change mid-season - replacing Cam Cameron with Jim Caldwell - you ended up winning the Super Bowl. Grade: C-Cleveland Browns (L 13-33 v New England)A gutsy effort by an utterly battered and broken Browns squad, that was forced to field its fifth quarterback in five games! Rookie Cody Kessler was knocked out in the first half with rib and chest injuries, seeing quarterback-turned-wide receiver Terrelle Pryor take a few snaps and veteran Charlie Whitehurst come in. The Browns have lost seven straight matches stretching back to last season, and 14 of their last 15. Grade: DCincinnati Bengals (L 14-28 @ Dallas)What has happened to the Bengals team that roared to an 8-0 start last year? In contrast, theyve now dropped three of their first five games in 2016 - the latest courtesy of Dallas dream rookie duo of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. Grade: D-AFC SOUTHTennessee Titans (W 30-17 @ Miami)It was a return to form for second-year quarterback Marcus Mariota, who had previously struggled to make an impact in the early part of the season. Mariota threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Titans earned their first road victory of the season. Highlights of the Tennessee Titans clash with the Miami Dolphins in week five of the NFL Running back DeMarco Murray had over 100 yards for the second time this season, and head coach Mike Mularkey will be hoping this is the turn in Tennessees fortunes. Grade: B+Indianapolis Colts (W 29-23 v Chicago)Coming off a London loss with no bye week was a potential recipe for disaster but Andrew Luck and the Colts did enough against an ailing Bears team. Indianapolis used a no-huddle offence from the beginning which helped the attack, but the defence failed to register a sack while Luck was hit five times. Still plenty of room for improvement. Grade: C Highlights of the Chicago Bears clash with the Indianapolis Colts in week five of the NFL Houston Texans (L 13-31 @ Minnesota)Brock Osweiler really struggled against the Vikings defence, completing just 19 throws from 42 attempts and had only seven yards before Minnesota went 21-0 ahead. Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus impressed once again, but the Texans will have to improve on offence if they want to make the post season again this year. Grade: DJacksonville Jaguars (Bye week)AFC WESTOakland Raiders (W 34-31 v San Diego)Michael Crabtree has done much of the leg work in the early weeks for this talented Raiders receiving corp, and though he again hauled in a touchdown, it was Amari Cooper who finally broke out in 2016, tallying 138 yards and a TD on six receptions. Oakland move to 4-1. Grade: B+ Highlights of the San Diego Chargers clash with the Oakland Raiders in week five of the NFL Denver Broncos (L 16-23 v Atlanta)The Broncos suffered their first loss of the season to the red-hot Atlanta Falcons offence. It was RB duo Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman - not Julio Jones - who they couldnt contain, though. The pair picked up 286 all-purpose yards and two TDs, while Denvers rookie QB, Paxton Lynch, struggled on his NFL debut. Grade: C-San Diego Chargers (L 31-34 @ Oakland)The Chargers find another new way to lose. San Diego built an eight-point second-half lead, lost it in a blink of an eye, but then had the chance to tie the game with a field goal with two minutes remaining only for the snap to slip through the hands of rookie holder, Drew Kaser. The Chargers have now lost four games by a combined 14 points, and Sundays defeat to the Raiders is their 10th straight against AFC West oppositions. So you get these cold fronts that come in and the key thing that I have found is if a person can stay comfortable, and basically block the wind but have a little bit of insulation, thats the key ingredient." When the Saskatchewan Roughriders hosted the CFL West Division semifinal against the B.C. Lions on Nov. 10, Environment Canada said the temperature at halftime was -15 C. It was a biting -21 C with the windchill. The weather this week in Regina has been bitterly cold with Wednesdays high -17 C. A bit of relief may be coming with temperatures expected to rise to just below zero by gameday, though the low for Sunday is -14. Norgan recommends layers to stay warm. He starts with a lightweight base layer shirt in a merino wool because it can wick away moisture and doesnt smell the way a synthetic material can, and tops that with a fleece sweater.
