TSN football analyst Chris Schultz breaks down all the teams and each division in the NFL leading up to the regular season. Justin Houston Jersey . Next up, the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings of the NFC North. Green Bay Packers In the NFC North, all four teams need to improve defensively to match their potential offensively. The Packers are no different, after finishing 24th in scoring defence and 25th in yards allowed last year. They have to face Adrian Peterson twice a year, Brandon Marshall , Alshon Jeffery and now Santonio Holmes twice a year, and finally Matthew Stafford with Calvin Johnson twice a year. In many ways the winner of the NFC North may not be due to the strength they all have with the ball, but instead may be who improves the most without the ball. The Packers are trying to be that team. Again, outside of one player, free agency was quite quiet for the Packers. Year after year as their opponents try to purchase talent to build a team, the Packers draft, develop and retain what they have drafted and developed. Still, Julius Peppers is a big signing. If energized - at 34 years old and moving into his 13th year - his talent with Clay Matthews could give the Packers the best third down pass rushers in the division. It will also be really interesting to see how Peppers adapts to more linebacker play on first and second down, after spending his career to date at defensive end. Dom Capers has an excellent chess piece in Peppers if he is rejuvenated this season. In the draft, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix may be a great colourful name but he was a need pick for Green Bay as safety was a concern. As is consistent with his winning ways, general manager Ted Thompson kept as many Packers from last year to this year as he could. Cornerback Sam Shields, nose tackle BJ Raji and outside linebacker Mike Neal were all re-signed in free agency. So defence is the worry, offence is not. I think Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in football and, if he can stay healthy all 16 games, what happened previously will happen again, and thats football success. With Rodgers arm teams cant overload the tackle box, but with Eddie Lacy they have to overload the tackle box. Rodgers will be able to ying and yang defences into submission because he now has a top running back to complement his top receiver Jordy Nelson. With Bryan Bulaga at right tackle and the experience David Bakhtiari got last year at left tackle, Rodgers has everything he needs - most importantly himself. We will know a lot about Green Bay once they play the Seahawks in Seattle on Thursday September 4. They win that one, they are on their way. When you talk about good coaches that run solid programs, Mike McCarthy is not as praised as the Belichicks or the Harbaughs, but he is an amazing 82-45 in his career, and in 2011, he won 15 regular season games. Many organizations are run very well in NFL football today, and the Packers are as good as any. Packers take first in the NFC North. Chicago Bears The Chicago Bears were a really good 8-8 football team in 2013. If they can turn around their defence the way they turned around their offence in one year, then the Bears will not only be a playoff team but could win a tough NFC North. On offence the Bears improved from No. 28 to eighth in total yards achieved and from 29th to fifth in passing yards created. They also improved from 27th to fourth in protecting the quarterback. That is an absolutely remarkable turnaround. The problem is on defence as they gave up 478 points, an all-time franchise high. Chicago is similar to Dallas in the disparity from offence to defence but the Bears were extremely proactive in improving their defence while Dallas lost their middle linebacker, had their safety suspended and were salary cap limited in creating a high number of new players. Jared Allen, Willie Young and Lamarr Houston are all good pass rushers who were brought in through free agency. M.D. Jennings, Danny McCray and Ryan Mundy all play either free or strong safety. Their No. 1 pick Kyle Fuller is a top cornerback and the Bears drafted two other defensive tackles and another safety. Chicago realized their trouble and overloaded the effort to find a defence as good as the offence. When the 2013 season started no one was 100 per cent confident that Marc Trestman was going to slide in to one of only 32 NFL jobs and be respected. But his ability to get a lot out of Jay Cutler and even more significantly out of Josh McCown who found a good payday in Tampa Bay. And as a head coach Trestman has the courage to start young players. One of the obvious aspects of Chicagos success is the trio of Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Matt Forte. But the secret of the Bears success was the play of two rookies that played side by side. And side by side is very unusual. Yet Kyle Long at left guard and Jordon Mills at left tackle out of Oregon and Louisiana Tech were outstanding as rookies. They played like players with four or five years of experience. Without their emergence, Cutler would not have connected with Marshall, Jeffery and Forte the way he did. The Bears will look for similar protection this year as Cutler attempts to pass to what may be the best top-three receiver group in football; Marshall, Jeffery and free-agent signee Santonio Holmes. The Bears are going to score points, but can they stop Green Bay from scoring on them with Aaron Rodgers, and stop the Vikings from running on them with Adrian Peterson, and contain the best receiver in football from scoring touchdowns on them who resides in Detroit by the name of Calvin Johnson? If they do this they could be one of the best teams in Chicago in a long time. The challenge is huge as the Bears is on defence, where the group ranked 30th overall, 32nd in run defence, tied in points allowed at 30th and were the 31st in getting to the quarterback. Can what happened on offence last year happen on defence, marking an instantaneous improvement? I say yes. Bears finish second in the NFC North. Detroit Lions The single greatest question ever spoken is why? In the case of the Detroit Lions, the question is why did this team start the season 6-3 but end the season 1-7? There are conversations of discipline and professional apathy and the reality of Matthew Staffords 14 turnovers and 54 per cent completion rate over the last seven games but the answer remains somewhat inconclusive going into the 2014 season. When you lose your final four and go 1-7, something has to happen, and it did. Jim Schwartz has moved on to run the defence not very far away in Buffalo and Jim Caldwell has been hired to try a different approach. Its good for Caldwell in that his previous head coaching experience had Peyton Manning at quarterback. His present coaching experience he will have Stafford at quarterback. Stafford threw the ball 634 times last year, an extremely high number. I am sure the goal for this years Lions team is not to put so much focus on pass protection and quarterback production. Or maybe not. The best receiver in football is Calvin Johnson. His physical gifts are intense and sometimes so oblivious his skills as a receiver are overlooked. There are only five or six receivers that dictate coverage every play. Johnson is one of them. The closer you play your strong safety to the line of scrimmage, the more room Johnson has 1-on-1 in open space. Staffords success is due to many, including himself. But Johnson can make Stafford look good more than any other player. With 634 passes thrown by Stafford and only 19 interceptions, a key for Detroit will be to create more turnovers as they ended the season with a minus-12 takeaway/giveaway ratio. Detroit will score points but have to stop others from scoring as well. With Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler in the division, you cant expect to outscore everyone and win 10 games. The pass rush and pass coverage has to improve for dramatic success. Caldwell has a calm demeanour as a head coach. He has taken a job where off-field issues created on-field concerns. I am sure his message has been given and heeded by the players. If not, Caldwell, with his wealth of experience, will sacrifice talent for conduct if needed. The Lions have not had a home playoff game in 20 years. If the team was to be the surprise of the league this year, the fan response would be phenomenal as it has been so long. And to achieve an enthusiastic response this year, the most important weeks for Detroit are the last two (Week 16 at Chicago and Week 17 at Green Bay). To Lions fans, those two weeks mean everything to set up a first in 20 years: a home playoff game. Detroit - Third in the NFC North. Minnesota Vikings The Minnesota Vikings will be an interesting team this year after hiring Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer as head coach. Some coaches are pullers and some are pushers. A puller is a coach that pulls you in to a program and works with you to improve. As you begin to believe in the program, you buy in and begin to win. Jim Caldwell comes to mind as a puller. The other type of coach is a pusher and as you would expect, he pushes. He is the boss, no doubt, and uses pressure and confrontation sarcasm with a rare compliment to keep you sane. Bill Belichick is a pusher. Both styles work and, as a pusher, Zimmer given time will work out well as coach of the Vikings. The best move hes made was hiring Norv Turner to run the offence and develop a quarterback. You cant say that Turner was a great head coach, but you can say he gets a lot out of quarterbacks. The Vikings will also improve on defence and given time you will see the Bengals of just last year in purple uniforms. They will use multiple fronts, but with four or more good pass rushers and two exceptional cornerbacks, Zimmer knows exactly what he wants. The number one question for the Vikings is how fast Teddy Bridgewater progresses. You dont trade up into the first round unless you believe in a players future and have confidence in his past. With a running back like Adrian Peterson, two good offensive tackles in Phil Loadholt and Matt Kalil, and a surprise player with Cordarrelle Patterson, Bridgewater is in an excellent situation. This will be a tough year for the Vikings. They won only five games last year and looking at their schedule they may only win five again. In a five-game stretch this season, they play Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. And that run starts after playing an improved Rams team in St. Louis to begin the season. Im not sure if you can expect another 2,000-yard season from Peterson, but I am sure you can see an improved Vikings team under the demands of Zimmer, given time. Vikings finish fourth in the NFC North. Marcus Allen Jersey . Costa Rica followed up its wins over Uruguay and Italy by holding England to a dour 0-0 draw on Tuesday, enough to finish first in Group D. Bryan Witzmann Jersey . According to a report from ESPN, sources said Manuels college coach Jimbo Fisher told teams he didnt think Manuel had the tools to be an NFL starter. http://www.prochiefsauthentic.com/Youth-Bennie-Logan-Elite-Jersey/ . made a diving catch in left field for the final out in a 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins in a regular-season finale Sunday. Zimmermann (14-5) allowed only two baserunners, finishing with 10 strikeouts and one walk in the fifth no-hitter in the majors this year.Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - James Neal registered his fifth career hat trick and the Nashville Predators beat the visiting Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Thursday night. Pekka Rinne turned away 30 shots for the Predators, who have picked up at least a point in each of their first seven games (5-0-2). Its the longest the team has gone without a regulation loss to open a season since starting the 2010-11 campaign with a 5-0-3 record. Ben Smith and Andrew Shaw supplied the goals in Chicagos (4-1-1) first regulation loss of the season. Antti Raanta, making his second consecutive start in place of Corey Crawford (upper-body injury), stopped 24 shots. Neal buried a rebound into an open net to complete the hat trick and give Nashville a 3-1 lead at 1:52 of the thirrd period. Travis Kelce Jersey. Shaw made a strong move to the net and knocked in his own rebound out of the air with 7:24 left, but he was robbed by the glove of Rinne with just over a minute remaining and Raanta pulled for an extra attacker. Smith beat Rinne from the crease at 12:21 of the first period, and Chicago was poised to take the lead into the intermission. However, Neal beat Raanta on a wrist shot from the right circle with 48 seconds remaining. Neal put the Predators ahead with 3:48 to play in the second period, scoring on a slap shot off a Brandon Saad turnover in the Chicago zone. Game Notes Filip Forsberg had two assists for Nashville ... The Blackhawks defeated the Predators 2-1 in overtime at Chicago last Saturday. NEW YORK, N. Stan Musial Jersey .Y. -- Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion was named American League player of the month Tuesday while Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers took the National League honour. Encarnacion belted a club record 16 home runs last month and batted .281 with five doubles, one triple and 33 RBIs. He scored 26 runs and walked 16 times over 30 games to claim the honour for the first time. Encarnacion had five multi-homer games in May. He was just shy of Carlos Delgados club record of 34 RBIs in a month set in June 2003. Others receiving votes included Miguel Cabrera (.380, 8 HR, 34 RBI), Detroit teammate Victor Martinez (.372, 9 HR, 21 RBI) and Baltimores Nelson Cruz (.339, 13 HR, 27 RBI). Jose Bautista was the last Toronto player to win the award. He took the honour in June 2012. Jedd Gyorko Jersey . -- Jerry Rice Jr. Lance Lynn Jersey . The Thunder earned the Game 1 win with a 100-86 victory Saturday night. Oklahoma City dominated the first half and led by 22 at the break, but saw its lead shrink to just two points in the fourth quarter. http://www.baseballcardinalsauthority.com/Tim-Mccarver-Jersey/ .Commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday it is inevitable that the league will one day take after European sports and have sponsor names on team jerseys. The Blue Jays made a roster move Tuesday that didnt garner all that much attention. They picked up 29-year-old right hander Bo Schultz on waivers from Arizona. Hes a swingman whos done some starting and a little relieving in what basically amounts to a journeyman career. Schultz can reportedly crank it up to the mid-90s, but what really caught my attention was the word used to describe his style, “sidewinder.” That means he drops down and throws sidearm. There arent too many pitchers who throw that style these days, though Ive been told it actually puts less stress on the arm. If you take that delivery even further, you get the submariner. Darren ODay and Brad Ziegler are two pitchers today who come at you from the side, but the last real submariner who sticks out in my mind of is Chad Bradford. I was fortunate enough to cover and get to know arguably the two greatest submarine pitchers ever. The last time the Kansas City Royals won the World Series in 1985, their closer was Dan Quisenberry. He was 62 and weighed just 170 pounds. His knuckles almost scraped the mound when he threw, he got down that low. The “Quiz was a real off-the-wall, truly funny man with a little bit of an edge. He racked up 244 saves over his career, good for 34th place all-time. His peak years stretched from 1980, when KC made it to the World Series for the first time (and lost to the Phillies), to 1985, when they won their only Fall Classic. He converted 212 of his 244 save opportunities over that six-season span. Sadly he passed away in 1998 at age 45 after a courageous battle with brain cancer, the same disease that took the Royals’ World Series Manager Dick Howser. The last time the Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series their closer was another submariner, Kent Tekulve, known to his friends as Teke. Tekulve didnt break into the Majors until he was 27 but he stuck around until he was 42, chalking up 184 saves, good for a tie for 57th place on the all-time list. Like Quiz, Tekulve was tall and thin and with his glasses on could have passed for a teacher of some ilk. He had a more subtle sense of humour than Quinsenberry, but he never reflected the pressure of being a Major League closer. He reminded me a lot both in his voice and his facial appearance of the great actor Donald Sutherland. Tekulve had two incredible seasons. In 1978, he appeared in 91 games and saved 31. In those days managers were more apt to have pitchers work in non- save situations to finish off games and work more than just the one inning as well. Mike Shannon Jersey. Tekulve went on to do broadcasting work with the Pirates, which was a perfect fit considering his easy going personality and love of the game. I was surprised to read a few weeks ago that he had undergone a heart transplant at age 67. He is reportedly doing well. The Blue Jays had a sidewinder of their own in Mark Eichhorn, another truly funny man, Eichhorn broke in with the Jays in 1982 as a starter and went (0-3) in seven starts. He hurt his shoulder and had to re-invent himself since he couldnt throw over the top anymore. He re-emerged with the Blue Jays in 1986 and put together one of the best seasons any reliever has ever had. Eich went 14-6 with a 1.72 ERA and 10 saves. Not only that, he chalked up a remarkable 157 innings out of the pen. The Jays have had starters the past few seasons who didnt put up that many innings. He followed that up in 1987 by going 10-6 with four saves in 89 appearances. In ‘87 he worked 217.2 innings. The Blue Jays sold him to Atlanta in 1989, but reacquired Eichhorn in 1992 from the Angels for outfielder Rob Ducey and catcher Greg Myers. That deal also solidified Pat Borders position as the Jays No. 1 catcher. Eichhorn stuck around for both World Series victories before ending his career with the Angels in 1996. Who knows, maybe the Blue Jays see a little of Eichhorn in Bo Schultz. Time will tell. --- I didnt do so well in my division series predictions, going 1-3. But Im going to stick with the one team I hit on – Baltimore – to beat Kansas City in the ALCS, which starts Friday. The Orioles are trying to win their first World Series since 1983, the Royals their first since 1985. The National League series features the two model franchises since the turn of the Century. The Giants have been to the postseason six times since 2000 and have won two World Series in the past four years. The Cardinals have been to the playoffs 11 times in 15 years. Theyve been to four World Series, winning two and losing two, including last years to Boston. I have a hunch it could be their turn in 2014. --- After taking a year off from the game, one of the great Canadian born pitchers, Ryan Dempster, has decided to retire. He was one of those rare pitchers who had success starting and closing. He was a two-time All-Star, pitched more than 200 innings seven times in 16 seasons, and saved more than 20 games three times. And he finally got his first World Series ring at 36 a year ago with Boston. I wish him well. IRVING, Texas - The Dallas Cowboys have acquired the rights to former Baltimore linebacker Rolando McClain and are placing Sean Lee on season-ending injured reserve with a torn knee ligament. Ryan OReilly Jersey . The team reported on its website Tuesday that it also would send a sixth-round pick in next years draft to the Ravens while getting a seventh-round pick in return. McClain was the eighth overall pick by Oakland in 2010, but off-the-field issues, including multiple arrests, shortened his career. He has been retired and hasnt played since 2012. McClain, who turns 25 this month, has 173 tackles and 6 1/2 sacks in 41 career games over three seasons. Lee tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first off-season practice. Chad Johnson Jersey . Im very excited about the playoffs, particularly in the Western Conference with amazing match-ups, as well as the wonderful local story in the Toronto Raptors. It should be a blast. Here are my predictions, but based upon my lousy prognostications during the NCAA Tournament, you might be better off going the other way on some of mine - particularly with the Raptors, who I hope and pray are able to win an incredibly difficult match-up. Justin Falk Jersey . "For the past several weeks, Logan has been dealing and playing with an upper body injury," said general manager Doug Wilson in a statement. "Despite his efforts to play through it, the injury has not responded as we had hoped and Logan has made the decision to undergo a surgical procedure to repair the problem. http://www.officialsabreshockeyauthentic.com/pat-lafontaine-jersey/ . The righty, 13-6 with a 2.66 since last May 30, surrendered six hits and struck out five, helping the Mets avoid being swept for the first time in a four-game series at Coors Field. Jhoulys Chacin (0-1) was rather rusty his first start this season, lasting five innings and giving up four runs. Chacin spent the first month on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder. Nolan Arenado ran his hitting streak to 24 games with a double in the fourth, the second-longest hitting streak in Rockies history. Justin Morneau accounted for Colorados only run with a ninth-inning homer off Jeurys Familia. After wasting a a 6-0 lead in Saturdays 11-10 loss, the Mets jumped to a 4-0 lead after four innings. Wright, Chris Young and Daniel Murphy had run-scoring doubles, while Curtis Granderson chipped in an RBI single. Lucas Duda added an RBI double in the seventh that increased the lead to 5-0. He also walked three times, including one intentional. Juan Lagares extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games with a single to start the game. Lagares originally had the day off, but was inserted into the starting lineup after Eric Young Jr. was scratchhed. Benoit Pouliot Jersey. Young was hit just below the right eye by a baseball in batting practice before the game. Hes day to day with a bruised cheek. Gee was pinpoint with his command, keeping the Rockies guessing among his curve, cutter and slider. He found himself in a sticky situation in the seventh, but the bullpen bailed him out. With two on and no outs, Carlos Torres got two outs and Scott Rice recorded the third to wiggle out of the inning. This was opening day for Chacin, who was shut down early in spring training after experiencing inflammation in his throwing shoulder. He was teams top right-handed starter in 2013, going 14-10 with a 3.47 ERA. Chacin struggled with his control throughout the game as he gave up eight hits and walked five. He threw 86 pitches before handing things over to the bullpen. NOTES: After Gee went hitless in three at-bats, pitchers for the Mets are now 0 for 51 starting the season. Its the longest hitless streak to begin a season since 1900, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. ... Gee is 7-1 in his last 10 road starts. ... Mets manager Terry Collins said Kyle Farnsworth remains his closer despite allowing Charlie Culbersons two-run, game-ending homer Saturday. ... TSN Baseball Insider Steve Phillips answers several questions each week. Josh Bailey Jersey . This week, topics cover the Blue Jays sudden success, Anthony Goses role with the Blue Jays, keeping confidence in tough times and scouts who keep the MLB alive. 1) Why are the Toronto Blue Jays winning so much of late when they scuffled last season with virtually the same roster? Is it purely the return to health of key players (Reyes, Bautista, Janssen)? Is it John Gibbons assigning personal catchers, managing the pen, managing team attitude? How do you explain the difference? Or is this just a short blip for a team that will eventually crash back to earth? So will the real Blue Jays please stand up? What are we to believe? Are the Jays the team that terribly disappointed us last year or are they this years surprising first place club? How is it possible that effectively the same team could have been so bad last year yet so good this year? All very legitimate questions for sure. There are clearly three major differences from 2013 to 2014. Firstly, the offense is hitting on all cylinders. The Jays are leading the AL in runs scored so far this season. They have the most home runs and the best OPS. They are slugging the ball like the team they were constructed to be. Clearly health is a major factor the turnaround from last year to this year as well. A healthy Jose Reyes at the top of the lineup establishes the offences as aggressive. His speed provides more fastball for the hitters behind him in the lineup and they are capitalizing on those opportunities. Jose Batisista looks like the same guy from 2010-11 who hit for average and power and was a run producer. He is showing no ill effects of past injuries. Edwin Encarnacion has literally been Mickey Mantle in the month of May as he tied Mantles AL record for most homers in a month with 16. Melky Cabrera is slugging like the Melky Cabrera who used steroids in the past. Oops did I say that out loud? I dont think he is using again. It was just a joke. The second major turnaround from last year to this year is in starting pitching. In 2013, the Jays starters ranked 14th in the league with a 4.81 ERA. They struggled, often leaving the club in an early hole which was nearly impossible to dig out of, as it affected the quality of the at bats that the hitters delivered. This season the Jays starters are ranked fifth in the AL with a 3.83 ERA. They are almost a whole run per game better. This is a huge difference. The starters have a win-loss record of 26-13 where as they only won 46 games all season a year ago. This is proving that with such a vaunted offense, if the starters can keep it close, the Jays have a chance to win. The third major improvement for the Jays has been their defence. They have committed the second fewest errors in the AL so far this season. A year ago, they committed the fourth-most errors. This means that the pitching staff doesnt have to get nearly as many extra outs. One thing to beware of is the schedule. The Jays are 32-23 so far. But they have only played 13 games against teams with a record over .500. In those games they are 7-6. I believe Toronto can sustain their success because they have a winning formula: Good starting pitching with a solid defence and a powerful offence. They have some vulnerability in the rotation as Mark Buehrle just cant continue at this pace and the back end has been a bit inconsistent. They really need to add another starter. The bullpen hasnt been nearly as consistent as a year ago which means they may need to address that at some point as well. They certainly have some flaws but quite honestly, so does everyone else in the AL East. They can win this division! 2) Anthony Gose has thrived in centre field with the Toronto Blue Jays since Colby Rasmus went down with injury. With the team in first place and riding a hot streak, whats the best way to get him in the lineup when Rasmus returns? Or does Gose just go back to the bench (or the minors) and wait for his next chance? It is time to figure out what Anthony Gose can become. The Jays need to figure out if he is part of the problem or solution by the seasons end. Goses speed can energize a team when they are struggling to score. He could bolster his teammates on day games after night games when everyone else feels a bit sluggish. He has a chance to be a valuable asset. Melky Cabrera and Colby Rasmus are both free agents at the end of the year. The Jays need to know if they have a low-cost alternative for one of their outfield spots for next year. The only way to figure that out is to let the young man play at the major league level and get some at bats. Colby Rasmus gives up too many at bats. He loses focus or concentration and strikes out far too much. Yes, Rasmus has more power than Gose but Goses speed adds an element to the Jays offence that can be tough for the opposition to deal with. I think Colby Rasmus needs competition. He needs to fight and produce for playing time. There is a way to manage the outfield with Rasmus and Gose splitting time in CF and giving occasional days off to Cabrera and Batista. John Gibbons can keep everyone hungry and everyone sharp. When I was Mets general manager I made a trade with the Dodgers for Roger Cedeno, a speedy outfielder, who had not proven himself at the major league level. I was able to keep him in the majors and paired him up with Rickey Henderson. Hendersons knowledge and experience rubbed off on Cedeno and we developed a player with discipline at the plate and blazing speed on the bases. Gose needs to be in Jose Reyes hip pocket and learn as much as possible. The Jays need to win now and develop for the future as well. 3) Earlier in the week, Jeff Samardzija finally picked up his first win of the season. He had gone 16 starts without a win, despite having one of the lowest ERAs in the majors this season. You were an executive with the Mets when Anthony Young lost 27 straight decisions (both as a starter and as a reliever) in the early 90s, despite being a decent pitcher. How does the team best manage a players psyche when they go through stretches like this? And how much of that kind of mental health massaging actually goes on in the Big Leagues? So many of todays young baseball executives are administrators. They have a mathematical or statistical background. They are number crunchers. Paul Depodesta, who was Billy Beanes assistant in Oakland (the Jonah Hill character in Moneyball) and later the GM for the Los Angeles Dodgers once said that if he couldnt quantify something about a player then it didnt matter. But what he missed was that it is people who play the game not robots. The way a player feels affects how he plays. I have a psychology degree. It doesnt give me the ability to read peoples minds but it certainly added to my understanding of what makes people tick. Plus as a player, my mind is what held me back from being a big leaguer. I experienced how the mental part of the game can impact a players performance. I could run. I was strong. I had a good arm. I made myself into a more than adequate defender. I was a good teammate. But I was a "try-er." When things went wrong I pushed harder and worked more. I took extra batting practice almost every day of my professional career. I told myself, "No one will ever out-work me. If I dont get to the big leagues it wont be because I didnt put enough effort in to it." I realize now that I tried too hard. I worked too much. If I took nine good swings in batting practice but a bad one on my 10th swing I held on to the bad swing. I beat myself up over it. If I struck out I didnt feel the pain of one strike out, I carried the weight of the fifty before it as well. It takes all kinds of people to make the world go around. Players with the most confidence ever and least confidence never can reach the major leagues, but the players with the right balance of confidence, humility, concentration, intensity, etc. are the ones who best sustain success. I am living a life of recovery now and one of the tools of the program is the Serenity Prayer. It reads like this: God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change;the Courage to change the things I can; and the Wisdom to know the difference. One of the toughest lessons for players to accept is that they dont control the outcome of everything in the game. They can only control what they can control. You would be shocked by the fine line that baseball players walk between confidence and complete and utter fear of failure, even among the very best players. I asked New York Mets star third baseman David Wright in spring training if he ever thought when he signed to play ball out of high school if he would have this kind of career. He said he didnt and then added that he questions himself all of the time if he can still do it. When he has a bad day he battles those (voices) that make him wonder if he might not be good anymore. If he has those thoughts, I clearly had no chance with the way I thought. When players struggle like Anthony Young and Jeff Jeff Samardzija they can feel helpless and hopeless. They wonder what they can possibly do differently. They start to feel like they need to be perfect. Striving for perfection is dangerous. When a pitcher isnt getting run support he feels like he needs to miss bats and pitch a shutout. When pitchers try too hard they often compound their problems. The same for batters. It is not a matter of trying harder to perform better in baseball. It takes concentration and intensity. Unfortunately, "trying" to generate intensity often leads to tension. Tension leads to overthinking and over trying which leads to more struggles. It is a vicious circle that can start all over again. The key to overcoming struggles is to maintain ones composure and confidence. Players truly need to understand that they dont have to be perfect. Remember, this is a game where hitters fail 70% of the time and are deemed extremely successful. Coping with failure is the attribute that separates the men from the boys in the major leagues. It was my downfall. Failure devoured me. I actually felt physical pain when I was struggling. I obsessed about it, it ate me up. Remarkably, Anthony Young and Jeff Samardzija had the ability to not get paralyzed by their failure because within the failure they were able to see some success. They learned that a loss didnt mean they were a loser. They didnt let their performance or their job become their identity. The ability to own their role in the result and not take on the entire responsibility of the result was critical. My experience is that when people share their personal struggles around failure it helps the person going through a tough time. That is what sponsors do in recovery and coaches do in baseball. I am still so amazed by athletes that can cope with failure. I know the challenge it can be. I still have to battle the negative thoughts that come with failure. I am better at it than I have ever been mainly because I have given myself a lot of practice. In recovery we talk about "Progress not perfection." It works in baseball too. 4) Next week baseball will hold the First-Year Player Draft. Eligible high school and college kids in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico can be drafted in the forty rounds (plus compensation picks) of the draft. Once drafted the kids will negotiate a contract with the selecting team and when they sign they will enter the minor league system for their organization and start to work their way to the majors. Many fans show up at major league games and have no idea about where the players come from. Baseball develops its own players. It is one of the things that distinguishes it from football and basketball. The NFL and NBA are satisfied in letting the NCAA develop their players. Fans dont understand the investment that baseball makes to acquire and develop its talent. Each organization in baseball spends about $15-$20 million on their minor leagues and scouting department. Those departments are the research and development areas of the operations. The money to pay for that comes directly off of the bottom line of the revenues generated by the major league team. Teams reinvest in themselves every year. If a team calls up four rookies in a season then they are effectively spending about $5 million per player per year. That is a significant investment. The men and women that make up the minor league and scouting departments are the lifeline of every organization. They are the foundation upon which the organization is built. Without them there would be no need for a business operations department, accounting department, ticket department or marketing department. There would be no stadiums or ground crews if not for the people who choose and develop the players. For the most part this is a group of no-name faceless baseball lifers who love the game and are committed to their respective organization. They have a keen eye for talent and a knack for getting to know what kids are made of. They rarely get recognition beyond that which they give themselves at a banquet at the Baseball Winter Meetings. Each year a scout or two is recognized for long and meritorious service. As we approach the draft give some thought and thanksgiving for those who have committed their lives to your baseball enjoyment. They love the game like you do and their only hope is that they can pick players who will make you happy. They never get the attention they deserve. I hope one or two read this. Robin Salo Jersey . Showing more spark after not taking enough challenging shots on goal in their 1-0 loss Friday night, the Bruins had 18 shots in the first period after managing just 25 in the entire opener. Luke Glendening cut Bostons lead to 2-1 at 13:20 of the second period before Milan Lucic scored late in the second and Zdeno Chara added a power-play goal early in the third. Christopher Gibson Jersey . Alvarez hit his first career home run, pitched six innings and hurt his right hamstring while running the bases in the Miami Marlins 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. http://www.nhlislandershockeystore.com/billy-smith-jersey/ . Spezza scored a power-play goal with 5 minutes left and Stephane Da Costa had the other two goals to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- From the on-deck circle, Justin Smoak couldnt blame the Angels for walking Robinson Cano to load the bases in the third inning. When Smoak cleared those bases with a powerful double, he demonstrated why the new-look Seattle Mariners are a whole lot more than their new $240 million man. Brad Miller hit two homers, Erasmo Ramirez pitched seven innings of six-hit ball, and the Mariners beat Los Angeles 8-3 Tuesday night for their second win of the season. Abraham Almonte and Dustin Ackley also had RBI doubles as the Mariners followed up their 10-3 win on opening day with another surprising offensive barrage. They only needed a supporting role from Cano, who went 1 for 3 with two walks. "No doubt. Why wouldnt you?" Smoak said of the Angels strategy in pitching around Cano. "Theres a reason why you do it, but were all going to have to get big hits with guys on base this season." So far, its happening all the time: The Mariners scored 16 runs in their first 15 innings of the year while beating Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson, their AL West rivals two best starters. Miller provided an unexpected power burst with a solo homer in the fifth and a two-run shot in the ninth, while Smoak has six RBIs in the Mariners first two games. "We just wanted to show them weve got some hitters," said Miller, who has four multihomer games -- but just 10 total homers -- in his career. "Weve got some depth. Starting on the road against two pretty good pitchers and a good lineup, getting two wins like that is a pretty great way to start a season." Ramirez (1-0) backed up his solid spring training with impressive work against the Angels star-studded lineup, striking out six without walking a batter. He retired 11 straight after squelching the Angels rally in the fourth inning. Wilson (0-1) laboured into the sixth inning for the Angels, who are off to their first 0-2 start since 2001. Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer and Josh Hamilton had two hits for the Angels, who spent the entire spring determined to avoid yet another slow start, a prime reason for Los Angeles four-year post-season absence. "Theres a llot of things we need to do better," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Anders Lee Jersey. "Were a better team than showed up the last couple of games. Were getting some guys on base, and our situational hitting was great all spring. We just have to do a little bit better job of it." Los Angeles went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position, dropping to 1 for 13 in the young season. Wilson, who had a career-best 17 wins last season for the Angels, needed 95 pitches to get through the first five innings against Seattle. He gave up eight hits and had eight strikeouts, including the 1,000th of his career. "Ive got a lot of confidence in our offence," Wilson said. "Thats the mentality you have to have with the guys we have. If you dont score and you give up a run early, everybody seems to press a little bit. If youre not winning, youre not having a good time." Ibanez has struck out five times already this season, but he trimmed his former teams lead with his first homer for the Angels in the fourth. Ackley chased Wilson on his 114th pitch, drilling a double off the right-field wall in the sixth. Albert Pujols doubled in the eighth and scored on Canos two-out throwing error, but Joe Beimel relieved Tom Wilhelmsen and picked David Freese off first base, ending the inning before throwing a pitch. Freese got his first hit for the Angels in the second inning, but is off to a 1-for-8 start. Mike Trout went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch on his bobblehead night. Seattle closer Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth in the former Angels relievers first appearance for his new team. NOTES: Seattle OF Stefen Romero went 0 for 4 in his major league debut. ... Angels relievers Dane De La Rosa and Sean Burnett will throw a simulated game in Anaheim on Wednesday before deciding the next step in their recovery from injuries. ... In just his fifth season as a starting pitcher, Wilson fanned Kyle Seager for his 1,000th career strikeout. The former Texas reliever is the 41st active player to reach the milestone. ... Mariners DH Corey Hart got his first hit for his new club, an infield single in the sixth. What does LeBron Jamess return to Cleveland mean to that city and the league? Strickland: It would seem that Ohios Prodigal Son returning to the place where his professional success began would be a significant part of his career narrative. The legend grows even more so if James is able to unite and sow the seeds of ultimate glory in the game with his new teammates to lead them to a title. LeBron exhibited how he could lord his power over the NBA with this decision and create semi-seismic ripples in leagues landscape. But the deeper, more meaningful aspect of this all is LeBron Raymone James had to leave, grow, learn to understand what may be his greater purpose in life. In his own words: "My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball. I didnt realize that four years ago. I do now." McNamara: For the City of Cleveland LeBrons return means everything. The city nearly shut down on Friday to celebrate. Billboards were raised and t-shirts were released. It means a return to legitimacy, not just in the NBA, but in the North American sports scene. When LeBron left bars, restaurants and tourism suffered. LeBrons letter provides commitment and hope to a struggling region and erases the pain of the last four years. For the NBA LeBrons return provides a phenomenal feel good story and gives hope to an underdog franchise. Its great for the league and freshens up a stale Eastern Conference scene. Watson: It allows James to make a return home, make peace with the City of Cleveland and makes them viable contenders in the Eastern Conference. Its a storybook ending, really, and a chance for James to cement his legacy if he brings a championship to Cleveland. Oh, and more jersey sales for the league as its rumoured he will change his number to 32. In LeBrons open letter to the NBA in Sports Illustrated, he mentions several of his Cleveland teammates, but not Andrew Wiggins. Cause for alarm? Strickland: No. Alarm for whom? Canadian hoops fans who would like to see the four Canucks on that team, especially Wiggins, be integral parts of aiding the Cavaliers in their NBA title quest. Understandable. But, this is a business. And this is a business that requires deft asset management skills, those often lacking in the front office decision making in Cleveland. So, do the Cavs move Andrew Wiggins, an unproven commodity on the finest of hardwood courts in The Association as yet, but with an absolutely meteoric upside for a highly coveted three-time All-Star, 3-point shooting, voracious rebounding Olympic Gold Medalist entering his prime who accelerates your teams championship aspirations? McNamara: I dont believe the exclusions of those names was a secret message or hint of things to come. It was definitely interesting that the #1 overall draft pick was left out though. Maybe LeBron doesnt know Wiggins and mentioned people with whom he was more familiar. Watson: No. Despite his talent, Wiggins is a rookie and still has to prove his worth in the NBA. The balance of power shifted in the Eastern Conference. Who prevails ad why? Strickland: While Cleveland automatically becomes a prohibitive favourite with That Guy on their roster, consider Washingtons impressive showing in the playoffs as well as retaining centre Marcin Gortat in free agency, note that Miamis not completely dead and the Toronto Raptors wont creep up on anyone next season. However, after "meditating it", the Chicago Bulls hold the most intrigue. Pau Gasol may still be the most all-around skilled big on the planet, even at 34. Teamed with 2014 Defensive Player of the Year Joakim Noah, they could be the best passing bigs in the league. Rookie Doug McDermott, the solid Jimmy Butler & the emerging Taj Gibson all help Coach Tom Thibodeaus plans of Eastern Conference supremacy. A healthy Derrick Rose makes this close to a forgone conclusionn. Bronson Kaufusi Jersey. McNamara: As it stands now the East is completely wide open, which makes for real interesting storylines that dont involve who will lose to Miami in the Eastern Conference. As it stands now, the major players have to include Cleveland (obviously), Indiana and Chicago. Free agency moves and trades can alter this of course. Right now I give the nod to the Cavaliers as favorites, but that takes into account a lot of assumptions that include whether Wiggins stays, if Wiggins can step in and contribute day one, how Bennett bounces back, and what trades or signings still take place. Watson: I dont necessarily know if it has shifted, I think it is just far more open and even overall. Every year the Heat were the dominant force to beat and now there isnt an overwhelming favourite. Teams have improved, (Bulls, Cavaliers), while others have are looking to take the next step after last years success (Raptors, Wizards), if some teams can figure it out, they can be dangerous (Pistons, Heat) and some have regressed (Heat, Pacers). The landscape has balanced out and its not as easy to call, with some free agents still unsigned, and moves to be made, its too early to call. Which player won the most this free agency period? Strickland: With spirited nods to the Madison Square Gardener, Carmelo Anthony (five years/$130M), Chris Bosh (five years/ $118M), Gordon Hayward (four years/$63M) and Chandler Parsons (three years/$46M), who all cashed out in dramatic fashion, LeBron James reigns here. The King didnt max out as he could have at two years/$42.1M. But the social/community currency, along with his personal peace of mind, may have the longest lasting impact and value. McNamara: No doubt LeBron. He looks like a superhero returning home and is savior to a city and region. Plus he goes to a team with assets to trade for a proven vet or just grow a stable of young studs. Watson: Chandler Parsons was a second round pick that earned $926,500 this past season with the Houston Rockets. Now the Dallas Mavericks are paying him $12 million a season on a three-year near max contract, talk about a pay day! Hes the Mavs highest player, but hes not the key to taking the Mavericks to the next level. Mark Cuban overpaid to stick it to his cross-state rival. Parsons is good, but not near-max money good. Youre the real MVP Chandler Parsons. Which player lost the most this free agency period? Strickland: Luol Deng, hands down. After dismissing several deals at $10M per year, which he felt were too low considering his stature and value, the oft-injured 29-year-old former All-Star signed a two year/$20M deal to "replace" LeBron James in Miami. More potentially lucrative offers existed with the Rockets, Mavericks, Hawks and Wizards. Negotiation is an art. Deng and his agents seem to be finger painting. And, as hard as it is to call $10 million per year "finger painting", tough to find kinder words for how this all shook out for Deng. McNamara: Chris Bosh. Why, Oh Why would he go back to Miami? There is no possible way he will be seen as anything other than a complete failure if he doesnt lead the Heat back to the Finals. Bosh going to Houston made much more sense since he would get a fresh start and different expectations on him. The only positive for CB about returning to South Beach is the extra year he gets on his contract. Watson: Chris Bosh signed a max contract with the wrong team, electing to sign a five-year $118 million to return to the Miami Heat (sans LeBron James). The Houston Rockets offered the power forward a four-year deal for $88 million to play alongside Dwight Howard and James Harden and stretch the floor and play defence in his home state, but he passed. Now he will have to work twice as hard, with Dwyane Wade on part-time duty and carry the Heat, as James made it easier for everyone on the team. He will effectively have to earn that salary, and bring his level of play back to what he did in Toronto. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Malik Jackson Jersey .ca. Hi Kerry, In the third period of Game 6 between the Bruins and Canadiens, Boston came within millimetres of getting one past Carey Price. Zdeno Charas shot from the point bounced off Carey Price and into the air before dropping right in the crease. David Desharnais then swept it away with his glove, but should a penalty shot have been called??? David KrastBoston David: The answer to your question is found in Rule 67 - handling the puck. Generally speaking anytime a player places his hand over the puck while it is on the ice in order to conceal if from or prevent an opponent from playing the puck, a minor penalty shall be assessed for "closing his hand on the puck". When this is done in his teams goal crease area, a penalty shot shall be assessed. More specifically to David Desharnais handling of the puck as it was about to cross the goal line following the shot by Zdeno Chara, rule 67.4 states; if a defending player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team. In the application of this rule a player is allowed to bat, drag, push or sweep the puck clear of the goal crease with an open palm or closed fist so long as this action does not cover the puck in any manner. David Desharnais legally handled the puck in the goal crease area when he dove and contacted the side portion of the puck with a closed glove (tight fist versus open palm on top of the puck) and bunted/dragged the puck with a swift, forceful motion from narrowly crossing the line. This legal action by Desharnais propelled the puck away from the goal line toward and under Carey Price to stop play. It is important to note David, that had the puck had come to rest and been covered under the body of Desharnais instead of Price, a penalty shot would have resulted. It was a tremendous defensive play by the Montreal forward to prevent a sure goal through the legal use of his hand on the puck inside the goal crease. Referee Kelly Sutherland also did an outstanding job to attack the net along the goal line as this play developed and then to wave off a potential goal and penalty shot from his final location directly behind the net. As a result of Sutherlands attack angle and close finish behind the net, the referee was able to clearly determine that the puck had not crossed the goal line nor had Desharnais covered the puck with his hand or body. On this crucial play inside the goal crease, referee Sutherland demonstrated excellent visual awareness to read the play and then quickly move his feet to gain the optimum position to render the correct call. NEW YORK -- Chivas USA might not play in 2015 and perhaps longer, a decision that wont be made until a new owner takes over the Major League Soccer team. Mark Barberio Jersey . "We expect to be able to close an agreement by the end of the season," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Thursday after a news conference to launch the leagues new logo. "Once we get an ownership group in place, well sit down with them and make a decision as to whether or not were going to keep that team operating in 2015 and beyond." The league hopes to have a schedule by late fall. With the addition of New York City and Orlando, MLS will have 20 or 21 teams next year, depending on whether Chivas USA plays. Chivas USA was formed in 2004, and MLS announced in February it had assumed operation of the team from Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes, who have controlled the Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara since 2002. Former Chivas USA youth coaches, Daniel Calichman and Theothoros Chronopoulos filed a discrimination lawsuit against the team in 2013, a case that was resolved without a trial. Chivas USA is last in the Western Conference at 6-16-6 and is averaging 6,942 for home games this season, less than half the figure of the team with the second-lowest average. Chivas USA shares the StubHub Center with the Los Angeles Galaxy in Carson, California, and Garber has said the new ownership group must intend to build a new stadium, perhaps at the site of the L.A. Sports Arena. Garber also said the league had fined Los Angeles Galaxy coach Bruce Arena $20,000 for criticizing MLS over the uncompleted deal to acquire American midfielder Sacha Kljestan from the Belgian club Anderlecht. During an Aug. 25 interview with The Washington Post, Arena was quoted as saying: "We had all of our ducks in a row. We were positioned to sign a player. I wont go into detail, and just say forces within the league worked real hard to make sure that didnt happen. ... because they are children and there have to be adults in the process, and we didnt have enough of them. I think we are back into the old days in the league when the rules are somewhat arbitrary." Garber said "it was a deal that did not come to the league for approval, and had it we would have not approved it." He differentiated Kljestan from goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who spent the early part of this season on loan to Toronto from Queens Park Rangers, by saying "we had certain rights in the Julio Cesar deal that we didnt have in this deal." "All of our employees, whether they are league executives or they are club executives, even going so far as to including our owners, are bound by an agreement that we will not criticize the system that our ownership is fully committed to," Garber said. "It pains me to have to fine him for making comments that he obviously feels strongly about but which he is required by league rules to keep to himself." Galaxy spokesman Brendan Hannan said the team declined comment. Garber also said the league is reviewing criticism by Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley of Canadian referee David Gantar who called a foul and disallowed what would have been a go-ahead goal in the 90th minute by Gilberto in a 1-1 tie against Chicago last weekend. "That referee did not get it right in that game, and we shouldnt be ashamed of saying that," Garber said. "I feel for Toronto FC." The leagues new logo, replacing the ball-and-cleat image in use since MLS started play in 1996, has a shield with a slash that extends on the lower side in a tail and three stars representing club, country and community. It will be used starting next season in various colours to match different teams. "If you look around at all the league logos around the world, they all have a ball in it. The shield represents an identity that we think is very soccer- or football-oriented," Garber said. "We dont believe that we need to take elements of the game to tell the world or our fans that were a soccer league." The logo is part of an "MLS Next" rebrand that was announced at a venue in New Yorks Meatpacking District, an area where Garber said "many of the millennials and those that are supporters of our league live and hang out. The new logo represents our commitment to whats next." On other topics, Garber said: --He is back at work following prostate cancer surgery that was successful. --MLS hopes to volunteer for video review experiments FIFA may authorize "so that we can ensure that games are not determined by calls that in retrospect can be looked at as being wrong." However, goal line technology such as the systems used by the Premier League and FIFA "is incredibly expensive, and for the amount of times that thats an issue throughout the year, we dont believe that its an expense that should be a priority for us." --David Beckhams group continues to seek a site for a downtown stadium in Miami and is not considering the suburbs: "Right now were really focused on having a downtown stadium. Weve seen how that has worked for us in so many other markets." --New York City FC, which starts play next year at Yankee Stadium, continues "to work with the City of New York to try to find a permanent stadium solution." Brian Webber told The Associated Press in an email that "it is likely" that the defence will call Prof. Jan Botha as its first witness on Monday, after four weeks of prosecution-led testimony and a weeks adjournment. Pistorius is expected to testify to explain why he killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentines Day last year by shooting her multiple times through a toilet door. The Olympic runner says he shot Steenkamp by mistake thinking she was a dangerous intruder who had broken into his bathroom. Prosecutors say the 27-year-old Pistorius killed the 29-year-old model intentionally after an argument in the pre-dawn hours and have charged him with premeditated murder. In South Africa, defendants who indicate they will testify are usually expected to go first but Webber said it was his understanding that prosecutors had agreed to the defences request that Botha give evidence first because of the pathologists personal circumstances. "It is likely that we will call Professor Jan Botha on Monday as he has personal difficulties and I believe that the state has agreed to him giving evidence first," Webber wrote to the AP. Pistorius could go to prison for 25 years to life if convicted of premeditated murder for Steenkamps shooting death. Pistorius testimony will llikely be crucial, with the athlete under intense scrutiny to explain why he shot four times through a toilet cubicle door without knowing, in his version, who was on the other side and the location of his girlfriend. Cale Makar Jersey. Although some legal experts say Pistorius taking the stand is a risk for his defence, they say he has little choice because he has admitted killing Steenkamp unlawfully and therefore needs to explain his reasons. "The only question is whether there was intent and intent is subjective," former state prosecutor and now defence lawyer Marius du Toit said. "That means the accused must come and dispel that." Du Toit, who is following the trial but not involved in it, said Pistorius testimony was "definitely the key." The defence may use the expert forensic testimony of Botha, the pathologist, to combat the prosecutions claim that Steenkamp screamed during the gunshots that killed her and so Pistorius must have known who he was firing at with his 9 mm pistol. Defence lawyer Webber also said that although lawyers for Pistorius and Steenkamps family are still in negotiations over a possible out-of-court settlement for her death, nothing would be decided until after the trial. Representatives of the parties have been in contact since last year. Both sides have declined to give details of any discussions but South African media has speculated that Pistorius might pay Steenkamps family in the region of $200,000 to $300,000. NEW YORK -- Nick Folk kicked his way to a big pay raise with the New York Jets. Cal Ripken Jersey . The Jets placed the franchise tag on the reliable kicker Friday after he had perhaps the best season of his seven-year NFL career. Folk made $780,000 last season, but the franchise tag estimate for kickers is about $3.4 million for this season. Folk was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent and by using the tag, the Jets could potentially set things up for a multiyear deal -- which it is believed Folk is seeking. Teams have until Monday to designate a player for the franchise tag, which allows a team to retain the rights to a scheduled unrestricted free agent. Its the first time since 2011 that the Jets used the tag, when linebacker David Harris was franchised. In his fourth season with the Jets, Folk made 33 of 36 field-goal attempts, including three winning kicks. He broke the franchise records for most consecutive field goals from the start of a season (23) and most consecutive home field goals (20). Folk also had a career-high 30 touchbacks on his kickoffs. After spending his first three seasons with Dallas, Folk has established himself as a clutch kicker for the Jets, with coach Rex Ryan playfully referring to him as "Folk Hero." Folk has repeatedly won training camp kicking competitions with the Jets, beating out Nick Novak, Josh Brown, Billy Cundiff and Dan Carpenter, among others, the last few summers. The team also announced Tuesday that the Braves will wear a commemorative patch on the right sleeve during the season. The patch, shaped like home plate, carries the number 715, Aarons autograph and a "40th Anniversary" banner.MINNEAPOLIS -- The Toronto Raptors have had every excuse to give in this season. Theyve had injuries to key players, turned the roster over significantly with an early season trade and had low expectations after a regime change portended a possible tear down and rebuild. Kyle Lowry doesnt make excuses. Dwane Casey doesnt make excuses. And the Raptors havent given an inch while climbing the Eastern Conference ladder. Lowry had 20 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his fourth career triple-double, lifting the Raptors to a 111-104 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night. DeMar DeRozan added 25 points and seven rebounds and Steve Novak hit five 3-pointers for the surprising Raptors (35-26), who have won nine of their last 11 games to surge to third place in the East. They are nine games over .500 for the first time since 2006-07. "We try to keep everybodys spirits high even if its not going well on the basketball court and we dont let nothing get down on us," said DeRozan, whose team shot 58.3 per cent (14 for 24) on 3-pointers. "Thats the cool thing about our team. We continue to keep it going." Kevin Love had 26 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, and Nikola Pekovic added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Timberwolves. Minnesota has started a crucial four-game homestand with two losses in three games, and the teams hopes of climbing from 10th in the West into the playoff picture are looking bleak. "Weve got to go out and win games were not supposed to win," Wolves coach Rick Adelman said. "Thats the approach you have to take. If youre going to get down and you start moping about it, youre going to lose again." The Raptors got some bad news early in the day when they learned Patrick Patterson, a key member of the bench during their post-Rudy Gay trade surge, would miss the next seven to 10 days with a sprained right elbow. But just as they have done over the last two months, the Raptors found someone else to step up. Novak had played less than 13 minutes over the last month, but he scored a season-high in 18 minutes and Terrence Ross (15), Amir Johnson (15) and Greivis Vasquez (12) all reached double figures in scoring as well to earn a toughh road win. Brooks Robinson Jersey. "I cant say enough good things about those guys cause its going to take all of us, especially with Patrick being out," Casey said. The Wolves entered the night five games behind Dallas and Phoenix for the eighth and final spot in the West. Theyve now lost two of the first three games of a crucial four-game homestand. They put up a fight in this one, trimming a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to 93-91 with five minutes to play. But Lowry drilled a 3-pointer, the Raptors locked down with the kind of defence that has gotten them this far and DeRozan finished the Wolves off with a 3-pointer from the left wing to improve Toronto to 26-2 when leading after three quarters. "Twenty games left, anything can happen," Love said. "We obviously have to go on some sort of a run. But if those other teams keep winning and pulling games out of their you-know-what, were in trouble." When Love sat down for a rest in the second quarter, the Raptors blasted Minnesota with a 15-0 run to take a 46-33 lead. Love ended the run with a jumper, fed Pekovic three straight times with pinpoint entry passes and also drew a charge during a 17-2 run that gave Minnesota a 50-48 lead. DeRozan and Ross both went to the bench early in the third quarter when they each picked up their fourth fouls and thats when Lowry took over. He was tenacious in his attack, hitting two jumpers and feeding Vasquez for a 3 to put Toronto up 75-68. He also played a big role in getting Wolves point guards Ricky Rubio and J.J. Barea in foul trouble with his aggressive penetration. "We needed all of his assists. He did a good job getting in there, penetrating, finding people," Casey said. We needed all his rebounds, especially with the way they crash the boards. He just had an all-around game." NOTES: Love made four 3-pointers, including one in the third quarter that broke Rashad McCants franchise record for 3s in a season. McCants made 142 3-pointers in 2007-08 to set the previous franchise record. ... The Raptors reserves outscored Minnesotas 32-16 for the game. ... Barea had another tough night, going 2 for 8 for five points. ... The Raptors recalled Dwight Buycks from the NBDLs Bakersfield Jam on Sunday. NEW YORK -- NBA Commissioner Adam Silver delivered the swiftest, strongest penalty he could, then called on NBA owners to force Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling to sell the team for making racist comments that hurt the league. Custom Nashville Predators Jerseys . Almost unanimously, owners supported the commissioner Tuesday, as he handed down one of the harshest penalties in the history of U.S. sports. "We stand together in condemning Mr. Sterlings views. They simply have no place in the NBA," Silver said at a news conference. Sterling, 80, is banned for life from any association with the league or the Clippers, and was fined $2.5 million -- the maximum allowable under the NBA constitution. If three-fourths of the other 29 owners agree to Silvers recommendation, Sterling will be forced to sell the team he has owned since 1981. A message left seeking comment at Sterlings business office hadnt been returned Tuesday afternoon. Team spokesman Seth Burton said in an email that the Clippers had no plans to issue a statement from Sterling on Tuesday. Players and others cheered Silvers quick action, with union officials saying that if the leagues punishment hadnt included a mandate for Sterling to sell the team, players were considering boycotting playoff games, including Tuesdays Golden State Warriors-Clippers matchup, the teams first home game since the scandal erupted. "We wanted to be a part of this decision, and we wanted Adam Silver to know where we stood. And we were very clear that anything other than Sterling selling his team was not going to be enough for us," said Roger Mason Jr., the first vice-president of the players union. Chris Paul, the Clippers All-Star point guard and the president of the players union, issued a brief statement before leading Los Angeles against the Warriors in Game 5 of their tied playoff series. "In response to todays ruling by the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver, my teammates and I are in agreement with his decision," Paul said. "We appreciate the strong leadership from Commissioner Silver and he has our full support." Sterlings comments -- which were recorded by his girlfriend and released by TMZ on Saturday -- harmed the league, Silver said. Sponsors were threatening to abandon the NBA, and criticism was coming from fans on social media and even the White House. Sterling criticized V. Stiviano -- purportedly the female voice on the recording -- for posting pictures of herself with black athletes Magic Johnson and Matt Kemp. "It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that youre associating with black people. Do you have to?" Sterling asks the woman on the recording. "Sentiments of this kind are contrary to the principles of inclusion and respect that form the foundation of our diverse, multicultural and multiethnic league," Silver said. The NBAs longest-tenured owner keeps his team for now -- and Silver said he didnt know if Sterling would fight to do so permanently. But he cant attend games or practices, cant be involved in any personnel decisions or participate in board of governors meetings. Just three days after the scandal broke, and hours before the Clippers hosted their biggest game of the season, Silver apologized to some of the leagues black pioneers while meting out a punishment he believed would satisfy outraged players and fans. Sterlings Clippers have been one of the most incompetent franchises in pro sports, and nearly all of their previous seasons would have been finished by now. But after the most successful two-year stretch in Clippers history, the current team is a title contender led by Doc Rivers, a black coach whom Sterling brought in from Boston and paid $7 million a year. "(Silver) made the decision that really was the right one that had to be made," Rivers said before the Clippers game. "I dont think this is something that we rejoice in or anything like that. I told the players about the decision, and I think they were just happy there was a resolution and that its over, at least the start of it. I think were all in a better place because of this." Silver said the ban applied only to Sterling, and there had been no discussions about whether he could sell to a family member. Many owners supported Silver, and none of them publicly defended Sterling. "We applaud the firm punishment handed out today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and appreciate the swiftness with which the NBA conducted its investigation," Warriors co-owner Joe Lacob said in a statement. The fine will be donated to organizations dedicated to anti-discrimination and tolerance efforts, Silver said. Sterling, with an estimated net worth of about $2 billion, did not comment, though Silver said he did not apologize for his remarks. Silver said Sterling confirmed that he was the person on the recording. Silver hasnt even been on the job three months and already had to face a crisis that threatened the league not only financially -- with several companies ending or suspending their sponsorships of the Clippers -- but more importantly, socially. The NBA survived the Indiana Pacers brawl with Detroit Pistons fans, and referee Tim Donaghy betting on games he officiated. But this brought a different level of outrage, particularly because the league could have done something sooner about Sterling, who has faced federal charges of civil rights violations and racial discrimination in his business dealings. "This has all happened in three days, and so I am hopeful there will be no long-term damage to the league and to the Clippers organization," Silver said. "But as I said earlier, Im outraged so I certainly understand other peoples outrage." After the announcement, the Clippers website had a simple message: "We are one." "We wholeheartedly support and embrace the decision by the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver today. Now the healing process begins," the Clippers added in a statement. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Toronto Raptors, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon. "As a proud member of the National Basketball Association, we stand strongly in our belief that the comments attributed to Mr. Sterling have no place in our society or sport. Our organization will always work to contribute to a culture of diversity and acceptance in this league and fully support the actions taken today. We thank commissioner Adam Silver, and all of the NBA players, for their leadership on this important issue." Rivers cancelled practice Monday and declined a meeting request from Sterling. He wouldnt address whether he would return next season if Sterling were still in control, a stance reaffirmed by the coach before Game 5 of the Clippers playoff series with Golden State. That might not be an issue if the owners vote to oust the owner. Sterling is estranged from his wife and had been dating Stiviano, 31. In court documents, Stiviano describes him as a man "with a big toothy grin brandishing his sexual prowess in the faces of the Paparazzi and caring less what anyone else thought, the least of which, his own wife." Silver said when he first heard the audio, he hoped it had been altered or was fake, but thought it was Sterling. And it doesnt matter if Sterling didnt realize he was being recorded, Silver said. "Whether or not these remarks were initially shared in private, theyre now public, and they represent his views." Its not an easy game, but it represents a chance for Chris Hughtons charges to move level on points with the team to beat at the top of the table. In the summer the bookies priced up Newcastle as the strongest favourites ever to win the Championship, such was the support behind a club that invested heavily in the transfer market and, crucially, kept hold of a manager whose CV is unrivalled at this level.Rafael Benitezs decision to stay on at St. James Park despite last seasons relegation from the Premier League was arguably the biggest factor behind the Magpies early billing as the second tiers best ever side. The subsequent success of both of those sides in the top-flight certainly suggests that both Newcastle and Brighton are well-equipped to make the step up.Moreover, if you were to exclude Newcastles ratings from their first two games of the season, the Magpies WhoScored.com rating would be 7.07. Its a figure that will surely rise further if they continue in their current vein of form, demonstrating that few teams in the Championships history can match the current leaders strength. One of the key factors behind the success of Benitezs side thus far has undoubtedly been their effective movements in the summer transfer window. Whiile Dwight Gayle steals the spotlight in that regard, leading the scoring charts in Englands second tier with 11 goals for a rating of 7. Ryan Ellis Jersey. 34, the impact of a number of less heralded recruits has been just as decisive. Whoscored.coms top rated Newcastle players this season Of their first team regulars this season, four of Newcastles top six rated players are new arrivals.Top of the list is Ciaran Clark (7.42), who few would have expected to become such a key member of the side. Indeed, when Newcastle announced the capture of the defender from touted promotion rivals Aston Villa, it seemed a slightly odd move at the time. Benitez had already signed Grant Hanley to bolster his defensive ranks, had named Jamaal Lascelles as his captain and could also call upon Chancel Mbemba. In fact, Clarks addition was tipped in the local media to provide competition at left-back as much as centre-half, perhaps reading too much into the fact that the Ireland international had made a handful of appearances in that position at Villa. Ciaran Clark has impressed for Newcastle since his arrival from Aston Villa Make no mistake, though, Clark is central defender, and hes proving to be a very good one at this level. He has scored twice and is offering both the most interceptions (2.1) and clearances (8.1) per game for the club, while Newcastles record with the 27-year old at the back is exceptional.Ironically, the only game in 11 that Clark has not been on the winning side this season was a 1-1 draw back at Villa Park, with the Magpies losing three of five without him in the XI. Rafa not thinking of promotion Rafael Benitez insists hes not thinking about promotion yet. Meanwhile, alongside the impressive Jonjo Shelvey in the middle of the park, Isaac Hayden has also played an important role in ensuring Newcastles defence has been much improved. The Magpies were exposed to counter-attacks last season, but Hayden has provided the necessary protection. His average of 2.6 tackles per game is a team high, with 1.9 interceptions bettered only by Clark, helping him to a rating of 7.25.Along with Gayle, Matt Ritchie was the other real marquee signing and while the winger took a little time to adjust, he has also proven an astute acquisition. With two goals and five assists to his name in the league - the latter is a joint high in the Championship - he is beginning to have the sort of effect Benitez would have hoped in the final third. Matt Ritchie has made a strong start to life at St James Park Ritchie, after all, is a player that has excelled in a title-winning campaign, ranking among the top ten players in the second tier as Bournemouth were promoted, with a rating of 7.44 courtesy of superb figures of 15 goals and 17 assists. Its clear then, that while Newcastles enviable firepower in the form of Gayle, Mitrovic and Perez is seen as their greatest asset, Benitez has built a team that warrants its billing as outright favourites.Their credentials will be tested against an improving Leeds side on Sunday in a fixture steeped in top-flight tradition. While both will certainly be aiming to be back in the big time before long, its the Magpies who are flying right now. They are justifying the hype to make an immediate return appear a near certainty. MADRID, Spain -- Real Madrid beat 10-man Espanyol 1-0 at home Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-0 aggregate score. Pat Neshek Jersey . Having won the first leg 1-0 in Barcelona, Madrid entered the match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium already in control and quickly sealed its place in the semifinals when Jese Rodriguez scored in the seventh minute. The young forward continued to win over Madrids fans by chesting forward Xabi Alonsos precise lobbed pass while on the run before firing the ball beyond goalkeeper Kiko Casilla. Cristiano Ronaldo was frustrated several times by Casilla, and the Portugal forward was booked when he tripped Sidnei from behind in the second half. Espanyol never seriously tested Iker Casillas in the opposite net even before Victor Sanchez was sent off in the 77th with his second yellow card. Madrid will play the winner of the quarterfinal between defending champion Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. Atletico leads 1-0 heading into Wednesdays second leg. The game featured Madrids Nacho Fernandez playing against his brother Alex Fernandez. Nacho said it was "not normal at all" to face Alex, who left Madrid for Espanyol last summer. "It was very strange to play against one another," Nacho said. "We used to play together on Madrids (B-team). But at the end you just play the game." Barcelona has one foot in the next round before hosting Levante on Wednesday with a 4-1 lead from the first leg. Real Sociedad will look to finish off third-tier Racing Santander on the road on Thursday after winning the opening leg 3-1. Jhonny Peralta Jersey . Coach Randy Carlyle didnt know the severity of Bozaks injury. Bozak left the bench and went down the tunnel early in the second period, returned to play a handful of shifts and then did play in the third. Ken Boyer Jersey . For Bergevin, the best pick is the 30th — which traditionally goes to the Stanley Cup winner. "Thats our goal. http://www.baseballcardinalsauthority.com/Yadier-Molina-Jersey/ . I kept my eyes focused up on the camera during each approach. I just tried to stay focused on my form, as I didnt know what the ball reaction was. I was quite emotional at the end. I did not actually see any of the shots in the game until I got home and watched the video. With the Senators set to play their first game after the Olympic break and with the trade deadline looming, heres a look at 10 burning questions for the Ottawa Senators heading into the stretch drive. 1. Do the Senators really need to find a winger for Jason Spezza? We are less than a week away from the NHL trade deadline and most experts agree that the Senators need help up front - specifically finding a winger for Jason Spezza. Bryan Murray told reporters last week that he would ideally like to get a winger who has term left on his contract, saying he would prefer to stay away from rentals. While Spezza has struggled at times this season, he did head into the Olympic break on a hot streak - collecting six points in his last three games. Milan Michalek also seemed to be playing his best hockey of the season before the break and if he can return to a reasonable facsimile of his 2011-12 self, the Sens may not need to add a scoring forward on Spezzas wing. Still, the Sens only have three games left before the Olympic break, so it would be a tall order for the Greening-Spezza-Michalek line to convince Murray that they have re-discovered their chemistry. The smart money is on the Senators finding another winger to bring into the mix, but obtaining a rental still may be the most likely scenario. 2. What is the future of Chris Phillips in Ottawa? Chris Phillips becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and there is no doubting the Senators could land a nice return for the veteran blueliner if they moved him at the deadline. The market for a veteran defenceman was set fairly high last year when the Buffalo Sabres received two second round picks from the Los Angeles Kings for Robyn Regehr. However, the Senators have always been hesitant to move a defenceman at the deadline when they are in the playoff race. In 2010 they hung onto Anton Volchenkov, in 2012 they did not move Filip Kuba and last year they kept Sergei Gonchar. All three cases had the exact same outcome: 1. The Senators made the playoffs2. The Senators lost in the first or second round3. The defencemen left the team in the off-season. (Volchenkov and Kuba via free agency, while Gonchar was dealt just before the start of free agency for a late-round pick). Phillips case is a little more intriguing because he is perceived as a legacy player and in the aftermath of the Daniel Alfredsson saga, the organization may be a little more cautious dealing with him. But considering Murray has never moved a defenceman at the deadline before, its hard to see him changing his mind this year - especially with a player with Phillips reputation in this community. Its more likely that Phillips future will be decided in the off-season and if he does want to explore free agency, the Senators could try and use the same approach they did with Gonchar and move Phillips for a draft pick. 3. Should Bryan Murray trade a defenceman at the deadline? For most of this season, the Senators have been carrying eight defencemen on the NHL roster. But Joe Corvo has been essentially sent into exile - having suited up for just two games since the calendar flipped to 2014. Eric Gryba has played his way into the lineup lately, leaving Patrick Wiercioch as the odd man out. The club also has Mark Borowiecki playing in the minors and he appears ready to play at the NHL level right now. Since there are always an abundance of teams who need defencemen at the deadline, Murray could be dealing form a position of strength here. But if he moves someone like Wiercioch, you would have to imagine Murray would be looking for someone with term on his contract - and not simply a rental. 4. Is Cody Ceci ready to play heavy minutes in crucial games? Its ironic that the Sens could be in the position to move a defenceman because two months ago, Bryan Murrays biggest need was on the back end. He pursued Michael Del Zotto from the New York Rangers, but balked when the asking price was too high. Instead, the Senators went for an internal solution with Cody Ceci and the 20-year-old was instrumental in solving the clubs puck-moving woes. But while Ceci was logging more than 20 minutes a night for a while, his ice time was drastically reduced just before the Olympic break. In crucial games against Pittsburgh and St. Louis, Ceci played just over 11 minutes on both nights. Considering those were must-win games on the road, it will be interesting to see how Paul MMacLean uses Ceci down the stretch in some very important games. Lou Brock Jersey. 5. When will Jared Cowen go back to being Jared Cowen? In the Canadian hockey rule book it clearly states there has to be a whipping boy for the fans and media each season. This year, nobody has taken as much abuse as Jared Cowen from the Senators faithful. Cowen has not looked anywhere as good as he did during his rookie season in 2011-12, when he established himself as one of the most solid young defencemen in the game. This season has been a struggle for the young blueliner, who is still playing more than 20 minutes a night. This is also the first year of his new four-year contract which will pay him an average of $3.1 million per season. There have been some fans grumbling that Cowen is entering Tyler Myers territory, but its probably too soon to make that comparison. He still looks like he is recovering from the effects of hip surgery from last season and much like Erik Karlsson, it may take him a significant amount of time to return to his old self. But if Cowen can look like the 2011-12 version of himself who was dominant on some nights, the Senators back end will look a lot more intimidating. 6. Will Mika Zibanejad and Zack Smith get enough ice time at centre? Paul MacLean has come back from the Olympic break and announced that Mika Zibanejad will be a centre from this point forward - barring any unforeseen circumstances. So if that is the case, how will MacLean juggle his lines so that his centremen will each get enough ice time to be effective? Spezza and Turris usually play between 18-20 minutes a night and if that trend continues, it would leave roughly 20-22 total minutes to be shared by Zibanejad and Smith. So if Zibanejad were to play 14 minutes, that could leave only six or seven minutes for Zack Smith. Perhaps the solution here is to really roll four lines and centremen who all log close to 15 minutes of ice time each night. 7. Can Craig Anderson continue his strong play? Craig Anderson wont be in the building tonight against the Red Wings, but the Senators netminder will have to be razor-sharp when he does return to the lineup this weekend. He was 6-1-3 in January and had a save percentage of .917 for the month as the Senators crawled back into the playoff race. But if Ottawa wants to cement a playoff berth, they will likely need their No.1 goalie to play at least 17 of the final 23 games and come out with about 12 or 13 wins. Anderson has shown in the past that he can get hot and carry this team and they will need that type of goaltending from him down the stretch. 8. Can Turris and MacArthur re-create their magic? Kyle Turris and Clarke MacArthur have been the Senators dynamic duo this season, but their production slowed down just before the Olympic break. MacArthur collected just one assist in his last seven games and that forced Paul MacLean to shuffle up their line a little bit. He is keeping Turris and MacArthur together, but he has moved Bobby Ryan off to another line and brought in Erik Condra to play on the wing. 9. Can Bobby Ryan find his scoring touch again? Bobby Ryan still has a team-leading 21 goals, but the winger has been moved away from his regular linemates and has struggled for the past few weeks. Ryan has just five goals in his last 24 games and that pace would make him only a 17-goal scorer over the course of a full season. Ryan may have been battling some sort of undisclosed injury and was even given some time off by MacLean after the Olympic break ended. If he can return to his form from the start of the season - when he scored nine goals in the first 16 games - the Senators will not be so worried about their offensive production. 10. Could Curtis Lazar see any NHL action this season? No player within the Senators organization has seen their stock rise as much as Curtis Lazar in the past few months. Had it not been for an injury in training camp, the teenager could have pushed for an NHL roster spot to start the season in Ottawa. But he is receiving rave reviews for his play with Edmonton in the WHL and is being talked about as one of the most NHL-ready players in the world right now. However, its doubtful that we will see Lazar in a Senators jersey until next fall. His Oil Kings could be primed for a deep run in the playoffs and the Senators would love to see him gain experience at that level before making the jump to the NHL. EDMONTON - Edmonton Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish, in a testy, defensive news conference Friday, tossed the boys under the bus and doubled down on head coach Dallas Eakins. Emmitt Smith Jersey .The accountability of the players to execute has to improve, said MacTavish.Visually to me were a better hockey team.(But) there isnt any tangible evidence of any of that improvement, and thats whats so difficult for everybody to swallow.MacTavish has been feeling the heat from fans and media with the team at the bottom of the NHL standings (6-15-5) in the throes of an 11-game losing streak. The Oilers have not been in the playoffs since 2006. Since then, fans have endured multiple coaching changes and failed rebuilding plans.MacTavish said the team has not progressed as fast as he expected, but said he wont deviate from his long-term plan to draft and develop talent. As painful as this process is, we feel that its a necessary step to get us to the next level, he said.Asked if the plan is not just behind schedule, but the wrong plan or the right plan executed by the wrong people, MacTavish retored: Is it time to punt out the core of these players at 23 and 24 years old as theyre developing?Ive switched out 14 or 15 players in the 18 months that Ive been on the job, and what I think I have now is a group that is capable of growth.MacTavish said everyone is under scrutiny from the front office to the dressing room, but defended his first hire, second-year coach Dallas Eakins. He suggested Eakins isnt going anywhere.Hes evolving, said MacTavish. (But) weve changed assistant coaches. Weve brought in co-coaches. Weve brought in former head coaches. (Weve had) four coaching changes (since 2009).Those coaches were all delivering the same message and we need a higher level of execution (by the players).Eakins has been criticized for giving some players too much rope, doing too much Xs and Os analysis and not enough yelling. The coach skated the players hard in Fridays practice but insisted it wasnt a punishment for poor performance, rather it was a pre-scheduled conditioning day.The worst day is when my boss and the players boss has to come in here and get pelted with bullets and questions about the team, Eakins said of MacTavishs news conference. That responsibility falls on me, my staff and the players in that room. Its something I take personally and certainly all of the players should be taking it personally.Eakins said his main concern was not whether he might lose his job but bridging the divide between the fans and the team. Were doing everything we can to repair that, he said.MacTavish has been around the Oilers for much of the last, lost decade, as a coach or in another front office capacity, but lashed out when a reporter tried to tie him to it its failings.Dont lop me in to a situation of (previous) power and influence in the management level of this organization, said MacTavish. Ive been on the job for 18 months.MacTavish has been criticized for leaving Eakins with little to work with at centre after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins while saddling him with subpar goalies in Ben Scrivens and Viktor Fasth.MacTavish said its not easy to trade when you have so few tradeable assets. There are four or five (Oilers) players that would bring us significant value, (but if you trade one) we solve one (problem) and we create another.Captain Andrew Ference agreed with MacTavish that the players need to step up.As players, we all know that everybody has a role in whats be going on, he said. All of us have different facets we have to work on and improve on which will collectively make us more successful. But fan anger this year has shifted squarely to the front office given the Oilers have drafted few meaningful players outside the first round in recent years while some Oilers players traded away flourish under other coaches and systems.Fans have also focused their vitriol on owner Daryl Katz, who came of age cheering for MacTavish, Oilers hockey operations president Kevin Lowe, and other players during the teams glory years in the 1980s.Katz is too close to his old buddies and wont pull the trigger to fix the front office, say critics.MacTavish said no one is more upset about the Oilers plight than the man in charge.I would characterize the owner as upset. Hes like a lot of our fans times 10, he said. The Oilers next play the San Jose Sharks at home on Sunday.---The Oilers are closing in on dubious history. Here is a look at record NHL and Oilers streaks:Longest NHL winless streak: 30 games, 1980-81 Winnipeg JetsLongest NHL losing streak: 17 games, 1974–75 Washington Capitals and 1992-93 San Jose SharksLongest Oilers winless streak: 14 games, 1993-94 teamLongest Oilers losing streak: 13 games, 2009-10 Orlando Scandrick Jersey . They were expecting him there all along. The Pacers announced Friday night that George has been cleared "to return to normal basketball activity," a decision made three days after he was concussed in Game 2 of the Indiana-Miami series. James Hanna Jersey . -- Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno was admitted to the hospital Friday for observation due to minor complications from cancer treatments, his family said. http://www.shoptheofficialcowboys.com/Customized/ ." One game is checked off, 15 remain and the next one to get crossed out could come Tuesday night when the defending champion Heat host the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference playoff series.SEATTLE - Fresh off spending more than two hours winding his way in front of a parade crowd that surpassed the population of Seattle, Pete Carroll was ready for the post-season to finally arrive. Perhaps Carroll was so prepared for a break because he believes there is very little the Seattle Seahawks need heading into the off-season. "I dont see anything that we need to add. We just have to get better," Carroll said. "These players know that they got better all the way to the last game of the season. Thats always out there for us and that will continue to be our focus." Carroll and his team were feted in grand fashion on Wednesday, enjoying the first championship parade for a team in one of the four major sports in the city of Seattle since 1979. Seattle officials estimated the crowd along the parade route at 700,000 while owner Paul Allen, addressing a celebration at CenturyLink Field, said it was 1 million fans that crammed downtown streets. Carroll was at the front of the parade and later was leading the charge that this team he helped put together is not expecting to be a one-year wonder. "They have come together to do something very special and its not just one year," Carroll told the crowd. "Were just getting warmed up if you know what Im talking about." That means Carroll doesnt believe the Seahawks need to make major off-season additions as they did a year ago when Seattle signed defensive linemen Cliff Avril, Tony McDaniel and Michael Bennett in free agency and traded for Percy Harvin. Seattle will continue to mine the draft for gems like those they have found in the past and look at free agency but Carroll said they are very comfortable with the roster they have moving forward. "The priority is for us to get back to work and work really hard again. Thats going to be more important. Its not going to be something from the outside of us. We have what we need, we just need to get back to work when the time comes with the right attitude and the right focus. Thats all Im concerned about." It appears SSeattles free agency focus will be on trying to retain players on its current roster that could be coveted by others. Jason Witten Jersey. Wide receiver Golden Tate and Bennett will both be free agents in the off-season and both expressed their desire to return to Seattle. Tate is at the end of his rookie contract, while Bennett gambled on a one-year deal with Seattle last off-season and now could be in line for a significant pay increase after a standout season with a team-high 8 1/2 sacks in the regular season and another 1 1/2 in the playoffs. Bennett became the interior pass rusher that Carroll has sought since his arrival in Seattle and part of a defensive line rotation that caused havoc. "I want to be back here 100 per cent," Bennett said. "I love the team. I love my teammates. Pete does a great job letting us play. I want to be a part of that. I know we can go back and win a Super Bowl again with all of these guys." Tate was Seattles leading receiver this season, his fourth with the team after being a second-round pick in 2010 as part of Carrolls first draft class. Tate said he would consider accepting a "little" less money for a chance to stay with the Seahawks. "In my eyes I would rather stay and play in a great organization, in a great city, around great people, around great teammates for a little less than go to a crappy city and win a ball game every now and then and be miserable for six months and have a fan base that doesnt care about the sport," Tate said. "Youve got to give a little or take a little, whatever. Well see how it works out. Hopefully, it does work out. I think Ive done everything in my power to earn the trust and respect of this organization." Carroll said Seattle will go into the off-season very healthy, the only lingering concern being a possible surgery on the toe of left tackle Russell Okung, who was injured in Week 2 against San Francisco and aggravated it later in the season. Harvin came out of the Super Bowl fine with his hip and now gets an entire off-season to get healthy. LONDON - Defending champion Sevilla is one of 18 teams vying for 10 remaining places in the knockout rounds of the Europa League when the last group matches kick off on Thursday. C. J. Fiedorowicz Jersey .Sevilla needs a point to advance, and hosts Croatian team Rijeka.Two-time former champ Borussia Moenchengladbach also needs a point against Zurich to advance.Dynamo Moscow has secured its place in the last 32 but can become the sixth team in the competitions history to make it through by winning all six group matches, providing it beats PSV Eindhoven. Here are some things to know about the round:___CHAMPIONSHIP POINT: Sevilla has won its last four European home games, but the Andalusian side needed a late goal from Stephane Mbia to salvage a 2-2 draw the first time it met Rijeka.Sevilla will be led by in-form striker Carlos Bacca, who has 11 goals in 20 games in all competitions, one in the Europa League.Coach Unai Emery has called on Sevillas fans to give them all they support they can at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. We feel strong at home, and ready to dictate the match, Emery said. We will try to draw from this strength while preparing with a lot of care for an opponent that cant settle for a draw.DYNAMO AIMS FOR SWEEP: Dynamo is determined not to squander the infrequent chance for a winning sweep of its group at the expense of PSV, which has already qualified for the playoffs. The target was set by the management: Win every game, striker Aleksandr Kokorin said.Coach Stanislav Cherchesov was bullish about his sides form this season. I try to give as much as I can, so that wherever I work - and by the way, this has always happened - the team reaches a new, higher level, he said. We have developed a formula for success for ourselves, so well just stick to it. We need to move forward all the time.TORINO TARGETS ITALIAN CLEAN SWEEP: Torino will be hoping star striker Fabio Quagliarella rediscovers his form as it looks to complete an Italian clean sweep in the last 32.Torino will join Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Napoli in the next round if it wins, or if HJK Helsinki fails to win, while it could also qualify with a draw if HJK beats Brugge by enough goals to ensure Torino has a better goal difference than the Belgian side. However, Torino hasnt won a match since October — a run of four defeats and three draws. That poor streak coincided with Quagliarellas drop in form. The Italy striker, signed from Juventus in the summer, scored in five successive matches over September and October, but has netted just once since — in a dismal 2-1 defeat at HJK.SOMMER ON SWISS: Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer is anticipating a special game against Zurich in search of the point it needs to advance. Its impossible to play for a draw, Sommer said. Well play like we always do, to win, as we also want to win the group.Striker Max Kruse is sidelined with an ankle injury but defender Martin Stranzl is available again after a thigh injury. But after missing three weeks of training, Stranzl may start on the bench. Tyler Ervin Jersey . According to Dave Stubbs of The Montreal Gazette, preliminary talks have begun between Markov - an unrestricted free agent this summer - and general manager Marc Bergevin. Xavier Su a-Filo Jersey . -- Chris Crawford hit a 3-pointer with 1:36 left to put Memphis ahead to stay, and the 21st-ranked Tigers beat seventh-ranked Louisville 72-66 Saturday, sweeping the season series from the Cardinals. http://www.thetexansfootballpro.us/customized/ . The ongoing funk on penalty kill and an unusually quiet night on home ice for the power play divided the Leafs from the Bruins at the ACC in a rare Sunday night affair.HOUSTON -- Jay Bruce got off to a slower than expected start this season. He soon warmed up, and with the post-season approaching, the Cincinnati slugger certainly isnt slowing down. Bruce hit a grand slam and had five RBIs, Mike Leake pitched eight scoreless innings and the Reds cruised to a 10-0 win over Houston on Tuesday night, handing the Astros their 100th loss. The home run was Bruces 30th, giving him at least 30 homers in three straight seasons. His performance pushed his RBI total to 100, which is a career high. "Thirty home runs is almost automatic if he stays healthy because thats his swing," manager Dusty Baker said. "But it was great to see him get his 100 RBIs, especially with the fact that he started off struggling in the RBI department. "We had (Sin-Soo) Choo on all the time and we had Joey (Votto) on all the time and he had quite a few chances. Now hes cashing them in and hopefully it continues into the playoffs." Cincinnati is 4 1/2 games ahead of Washington for second NL wild card. The Astros are the first major league team to lose at least 100 games in three straight seasons since Kansas City from 2004-06. "Im always going to concentrate on the things we need to do to improve," Houston manager Bo Porter said when asked about losing 100 games. "I dont concern myself with what it is people are going to say. I concern myself about the men in that clubhouse and how were going to get better every day." The Reds got to work early, with Zack Cozart driving in two runs in a four-run first inning. Cincinnati was up by five in the fourth before Bruces towering slam to the Crawford Boxes in left field pushed the lead to 9-0 and chased Jordan Lyles (7-. Leake (14-6) allowed five hits over eight innings and struck out six with two walks. Sean Marshall, who hadnt pitched since May 20 because of shoulder tendinitis, threw a perfect ninth to complete the shutout. The Reds tagged Lyles for nine hits and nine runs in 3 1-3 innings. The Astros, who have the worst record in the majors, fell to 51-100. They were 56-106 in 2011 and dropped to 55-107 last year, their final season in the National League. With a rookie-filled team and the lowest payroll in the majors, the Astros have had plenty of lopsided games this year. But even in an already dismal year,, the night they eclipsed the century mark yet again was particularly ugly. Nick Martin Jersey. Things went downhill quickly for the Astros. Lyles had a two-base error when he fielded a high-bouncing grounder hit by Brandon Phillips and badly overthrew first base with one out in the first. An RBI single by Bruce made it 1-0. Xavier Paul walked to load the bases and Todd Fraziers single pushed the lead to 2-0. Cozart wrapped up the scoring in that inning with a two-RBI single to make it 4-0. The bottom of the first didnt go any better for Houston. Jonathan Villar hit a leadoff single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. But it wasnt just that he was thrown out, but the way he was thrown out that was embarrassing. Villar slid into second base, but Phillips already had the ball before he began the slide. The always flamboyant Phillips reached backward between his legs to apply the tag as Villar crashed head-first into Phillips backside. "Thats the way I play," Villar said. "Im aggressive. I was trying to make something happen, motivate my team. Its hard to change because thats the way Ive always played." Phillips said he wasnt trying to showboat, and he initially didnt realize that Villar was coming. "The crowd let me know that he was coming to second base," Phillips said. "I just had to quickly put the tag between my legs. Thats the only reason I tagged him. If I didnt hear the crowd, I would have just caught it and looked around and he would have been safe." However, he probably could have tagged him in a less showy way. "Thats me," he said with a laugh. "I do things off the wall, yes." Baker laughed when asked about the play. "Ask Brandon," he said. "I think he gets bored sometimes." Cozart added an RBI single in the third to extend Cincinnatis lead to 5-0. Derrick Robinson walked with no outs in the fourth inning before Shin-Soo Choo drew a walk. A one-out walk by Votto loaded the bases to set up the slam by Bruce, which chased Lyles. It was his first grand slam since Sept. 5, 2008. NOTES: The series wraps up on Wednesday when Houstons Brad Peacock opposes Greg Reynolds. ... Votto extended his hitting streak at Minute Maid Park to 23 games, which is the longest by a player in the parks history. SANTA CLARA, Calif. Trent Williams Jersey . -- Alex Boone would hold out again if necessary -- and has no regrets about missing the off-season program with the San Francisco 49ers -- if it means more financial stability for his family. Sure, the right guard missed his teammates, but Boone insists he will be up to speed in no time -- a fresh $6 million, two-year contract in hand to help motivate him. He agreed to terms on a restructured contract during the weekend, then passed his physical Monday. The new deal allows him to become a free agent after the 2015 season and not be designated with the franchise tag. Boone already met with coach Jim Harbaugh and said he was prepared to practice Tuesday and be ready for Sundays season opener at Dallas if called upon to start. "Its great to be back, good to be back with the team," Boone said. "Im happy with the outcome. Its a win-win for everybody. Its time to start playing football. ... Im happy to join my teammates. The feeling was very mutual. We can put all this behind us and we can move forward." Boone said he largely spent the off-season relaxing at home with his two young children, including 5-month-old daughter Karmyn. He worked out six days a week in Chandler, Arizona. If he is in shape and ready, Boones menacing 6-foot-8 presence will be welcomed. It already was a positive addition for teammates to see him Tuesday as the 49ers dressed in their new locker room at Levis Stadium amid the distractions of Ray McDonalds legal situation and linebacker Aldon Smiths nine-game suspension handed down from the NFL on Friday. "Kilgore, whats up, buddy?" Boone hollered at centre Daniel Kilgore, who was right next to him. The offensive line struggled during the preseason to protect quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Not that Boone noticed much. "I didnt really watch them that much. It was weird to watch them so I just kind of avoided it," Boone said. "Found myself working out during that time. Watched some clips, thought they were good. Could always get better, theres always progress to be made. I think for this team the skys the limit. Im excited for this year. I think everybody is. And its time to get back to work. He has started every game the past two seasons with a tight-knit unit that is one of the most-improved in the NFL. New starting centre Kilgore joins the mix this season. Boone said he hasnt hit anybody since the NFC championship game loss at Seattle. How much he might play Sunday, Boone doesnt know. "Thats up to the coaches," he said. "Personally, I think Ill be very effective." Boones fines for missing the mandatory minicamp and training camp were waived as part of the restructured contract. "Its awesome that hes here," left guard Mike Iupati said. "Im sure he worked hard in the off-season. Oh yeah, no doubt, Boonie will be ready. Everybody will be ready." Oklahoma City, OK (SportsNetwork. Marcus Allen Jersey .com) - Kevin Durant posted 34 points with eight rebounds and the Oklahoma City Thunder claimed a hard-fought 109-102 victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday. Russell Westbrook checked in with 22 points and six assists, while Serge Ibaka and Nick Collison added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Oklahoma City has won two straight and four of five overall. Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds and John Wall registered 14 points with 12 assists in the setback, Washingtons second straight defeat on the heels of a three-game winning streak. Few mishaps on the offensive end, mishaps on the defensive end, said Beal. If you look at the stat sheet we were neck and neck. They just made a couple more plays than we did down the stretch. With the game tied at 95-95 and under five minutes to go, Durant buried a 3- pointer from the top of the arc. He then hit a stepback jumper two possessions later for a 100-95 led, prompting a Washington timeout with 3:23 left. Out of the huddle, Nene hit a mid-range jumper prior to Westbrook slashing through the lane for a layup. Durant really put the pressure on the visitors after each team exchanged misses, converting an alley-oop layup with Paul Pierce draped all over him at 1:42. He hit the ensuing free throw, then Washington responded with five straight points to cut it to three. Westbrook stole an errant pass from Wall with 28.9 seconds left, missed the layup due to some trailing defense from Wall, but Ibaka was there to clean up the rebound. Westbrook then hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds to secure the win. I was pleased with the win, Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. As the game went along, we really locked in during that fourth quarter. Washington led 29-28 after the first quarter and pushed the margin to 57-55 at the half. Walls runner gave the Wizards an 82-74 lead late in the third, but Durant knocked down a pair of treys to close the quarter as part of an 8-0 run. Game Notes The Thunder scored 16 points off 15 turnovers ... OKC shot 53 percent from the floor ... There were 16 ties and 13 lead changes, with each team taking a game-high eight point lead. Linebacker Clay Matthews is working his way toward a potential return to Lambeau Field for Sundays game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The heavy black wrap that virtually encased his right hand in practice offers a big clue as to why hes missed the past four games. "I think so. You know obviously its going to be coachs decision, but you know, Id like to be out there," Matthews said Thursday. "So Im just trying to get ready to help out in any way which I can." Getting Matthews back would help offset the loss of Rodgers, who hurt his left collarbone in Monday nights loss to the Bears. "Its time for other positions to elevate their game and really carry this team ... until he comes back," Matthews said. The four-time Pro Bowler has 45 1/2 sacks in 62 games, including three in his four appearances this season. His return would be a huge boost for an outside linebacker group ravaged by injuries. Matthews was limited in practice Thursday, as were three other outside linebackers: Mike Neal (knee), Andy Mulumba (ankle) and Nick Perry (foot). The latter has missed the past three games. The only healthy outside linebacker is rookie Nate Palmer. First, Matthews has to get used to that "club" on his right hand he wears in practice. From afar, it looks as if he was wearing a large black oven mitt stuffed with foam thats sealed around his wrist. Matthews is not a big fan of it. "It does not feel good." "Ive just got to get used to playing, you know a little more with one hand and obviously being comfortable with throwing it in there," he said. "So Im takiing baby steps in coming back to practice. Marquette King Jersey. " Whether trying to spin past an offensive tackle or levelling an undersized running back trying to throw a block, the hands are important in helping to get leverage. "Obviously you need to have great hands, and you know when you take one away it definitely hinders your game a little bit," he said. "Well take it day-by-day, but its getting better." Coach Mike McCarthy has been watching Matthews comfort level. Practice could help determine whether a different kind of custom-fitting wrap is better for Matthews, given the particular pass-rushing techniques he might use. But a one-armed Matthews might be just as good as any other linebacker. After compiling 11 sacks in the first three games without Matthews, the Packers managed just one in Mondays 27-20 loss to Chicago. Palmer said just the threat of having Matthews out there could help free up other pass-rushers. "I hope hes very effective," McCarthy said. "Hes a dynamic football (player) and it will be great to get him back on the field." Playing the Eagles would also be a family affair for Matthews. His younger brother, linebacker Casey Matthews, was a fourth-round draft pick in 2011 out of Oregon. Notes: McCarthy said the Packers are getting the defence ready for the Eagles up-tempo attack with a no-huddle system. "I thought our guys did a good job for them today. But its a challenge," McCarthy said. ... Rodgers was listed on the practice report as having not participated. The team doesnt have to declare whether players will be out until Friday. ... G T.J. NEW YORK, N. Rose Lavelle Jersey .Y. - The NFLs salary cap for this season has been set at $133 million, the highest amount in league history. Each team must be compliant with the cap number by March 11, when the leagues free agency period begins. The cap amount announced Friday, which applies to active players salaries, is up from $123 million last season and surpasses the previous high of $127,997,000 in 2009. NFL teams can carry over unused salary cap room from the previous league year, and the NFLPA says in a release Friday that the average carryover for those teams that elected to do so was $6.1 million. The leagues salary cap is calculated by taking a percentage of all projected NFL revenues, subtracting projected benefits for the season, and dividing by 32 teams. Meghan Klingenberg Jersey . Carli Lloyd Jersey . Louis, MO (SportsNetwork. http://www.uswntproshop.com/c-5-allie-long-usa-jersey.aspx .com) - On a night the Bulls played without Derrick Rose, it was time for Pau Gasol to take charge.PITTSBURGH -- Solid starting pitching. A couple of defensive gems. Just enough hitting to make a difference. For a night, the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates managed to recapture a little bit of their 2013 magic. Do it a few more times and maybe their miserable start to 2014 will become a memory. Edinson Volquez allowed one run in six sharp innings, Andrew McCutchen and Josh Harrison made a splash both at the plate and in the field, and the Pirates edged the Washington Nationals 3-1 Thursday night. Volquez (2-4) ended a three-game losing streak by limiting the Nationals to three hits, walking two and striking out four. Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his eighth save. McCutchen drove in two runs for the Pirates and made a sliding grab with two on in the ninth to end the game. Josh Harrison added two hits for Pittsburgh and added a run-saving catch of his own for the Pirates. "Thats what were known for, just playing routine baseball, not doing anything too out of the ordinary," McCutchen said. "(Just) getting in scoring position, getting some runs home and having pitching shut it down for us." Ian Desmond hit his eighth homer of the season for the Nationals, but Washington left 10 runners on base. Rookie Blake Treinen (0-2) struggled with his command in his second career start, giving up two runs on four hits in 5 2-3 innings, striking out four and walking five. The Nationals have lost three of four. "Our approach was fine," Washington manager Matt Williams said. "They made some really nice plays. That happens. Its big league baseball. They get paid to do that." Volquez had been a pleasant surprise during the seasons first month, but scuffled through his previous four starts, going 0-3 with a 10.19 ERA as part of a slide that had the Pirates well off the pace in the NL Central a year after making the franchises first post-season appearance in more than two decades. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle wondered if Volquez -- who led the National League in walks per nine innings last season -- was suddenly throwing too many strikes. The former All-Star did a better job mixing location and speed against Washingtons patchwork lineup. His only real miscue came on a 2-0 fastball in the fourth that Desmond sent iinto the seats in centre field that briefly tied the game at 1. Jaelene Hinkle Jersey. It was the 10th home run Volquez has surrendered this season, but he responded by retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced. "Just keeping the ball in the strike zone, keeping the ball in the ballpark," Volquez said. "I did it for a couple innings and Desmond hit a homer. A solo shot cant beat you, its only one run. You stay in the game and keep pitching." Treinen, who faced Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw in his previous major league start, wasnt quite as crisp. He retired the first eight batters he faced thanks in part to a sinker that topped out at 97 mph before getting loose in the third. He loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks and a single by Harrison before hitting McCutchen with an 80 mph changeup to force in a run. Trouble surfaced again in the fifth thanks in part to Harrison, who has provided a spark in right field even as the Pirates mark time until the likely arrival of highly touted prospect Gregory Polanco next month. Harrison walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a fly to centre before streaking home on a sharp single up the middle by McCutchen. Harrison is 13 for 37 (.351) since being moved into the leadoff spot earlier this month. Washington loaded the bases in the eighth off Tony Watson, but the left-hander retired Scott Hairston on a fly to shallow left field to get out of it and Melancon survived despite putting two runners on with McCutchens sliding grab on a sinking liner by Anthony Rendon sealing it. NOTES: The Pirates claimed right-handed reliever Josh Wall off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday and assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. Wall is 1-1 with a 15.15 ERA in 15 career major league games. To make room for Wall on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated RHP Phil Irwin for assignment. ... Nationals 1B Adam LaRoche went 0 for 2 in a rehab start for Class A Potomac on Thursday night. LaRoche has been on the disabled list since May 10 with a strained right quadriceps. LaRoche is eligible to come off the DL on Sunday. ... The series continues Friday night when Washingtons Jordan Zimmerman (3-1, 3.70 ERA) faces Pittsburghs Charlie Morton (0-6, 3.45). MADRID - Deportivo La Corunas players have held a minutes silence for a fan who died in a street clash with Atletico Madrid supporters before their Spanish league match. Luol Deng Jersey .Deportivos players stopped practice Monday morning and formed a ring on the centre circle of the practice field. The club says the players held a minute of silence as a sign of mourning and rejection of the violence that led to the death of a 43-year-old man it identified as Francisco Javier Romero Taboada. The fatal fight has been condemned by both clubs and Spains sports authorities. The fight broke out Sunday morning near Atleticos Vicente Calderon Stadium when groups of men battled along the banks of the Manzanares River. Braves reliever David Carpenter was also fined for throwing at Rockies outfielder Corey Dickerson in the same game, which featured several ejections, including Colorado manager Walt Weiss. http://www.lakersbasketballshop.com/Nick-Van-Exel-Jersey/ .Y. - The New York Rangers have reached a one-year contract extension with goalie Cam Talbot, keeping Henrik Lundqvists backup away from unrestricted free agency.Madison Bumgarner will have to settle for the longest save in World Series history rather than a Game 7 win.Bumgarner was originally credited by the official scorers with the win after throwing five innings of shutout relief to close out San Franciscos 3-2 victory over Kansas City on Wednesday night. After consulting with the Elias Sports Bureau, Bumgarner was credited with the save instead and reliever Jeremy Affeldt got the win for his first career Series decision. The change was announced about 50 minutes following the final out.Affeldt was in the game when the Giants scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.Under rule 10.17, the only way a pitcher does not get the win when he is in the game when the winning run scores is if he is a starter and did not go five innings or was ineffective in a brief appearance. Affeldt pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings in relief of Tim Hudson and therefore earned the win. That gave Bumgarner the save as the finishing pitcher in the victory. The previous longest save in Series history since it became an official stat in 1969 was a 3 2-3 inning stint by Steve Howe in the Game 6 clincher for the Dodgers against the Yankees in 1981. Lefty Grove would have gotten a 4 1-3 inning save in Game 2 in 1929 for the Philadelphia Athletics against the Chicago Cubs under the current rules.Bumgarner won two games as a starter, and he joined Rawly Eastwick of the Reds in 1975 as the only pitchers witth at least two wins and a save in a single World Series. Dennis Rodman Jersey. he win capped a brilliant post-season for Affeldt, who also got the win in the NL Championship Series clincher against St. Louis and pitched 11 2-3 scoreless innings this month.Affeldt relieved Hudson with two on and two outs in the second inning and got Nori Aoki to hit into a forceout to keep the game tied at 2. He then was helped by a sparkling double play started by second baseman Joe Panik in the third and got another double play in the fourth before turning it over to Bumgarner. That saved us. That saved me, Affeldt said. To lay out the way he did and flip it and get the double play, that was the game-changer for me.Affeldt has 22 straight scoreless post-season appearances since allowing a run in Game 1 of the 2010 World Series, one shy of Mariano Riveras record.Hes incredible on what he did, manager Bruce Bochy said. We talked to Jeremy about his role today. These guys are so unselfish. They dont care. Theyll pitch anytime. He was all in on how we were going to use him and pretty amazing numbers that he has throughout this post-season. Because of him, hes played a critical role in these three championships. For his career, Affeldt is 2-0 with an 0.86 ERA in 33 post-season games and has been part of three title teams in San Francisco. It means a lot to me, he said. BROSSARD, Que. A. J. Burnett Jersey . -- Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price said Saturday the "lower body" injury he suffered in the NHL Eastern Conference final wont need surgery. Prices playoffs ended in the second period of the series opener after New York Rangers forward Chris Krieder crashed into him while on a breakaway. He would only call it a lower body injury, although he was wearing a brace on his right knee in the days after the incident. "Over time its going to get back to normal," he said. "I actually got really lucky, it could have been a lot worse than it was." Price lay on the ice for a moment after the collision early in the second period of New Yorks 7-2 victory, but finished the period. He was substituted by back-up Peter Budaj for the third. No penalty was called on the play, although teammate Brandon Prust said Kreiders crash was "accidental on purpose." "I dont think he did it intentionally and I dont think he tried to miss me either," said Price. "He was coming in with a lot of speed and he lost his footing. "Theres not much really to be said. Im not going to go seeking revenge or anything like that. Hockey is a game of chance and unfortunately, I was unlucky in that situation." Budaj was beaten for three goals in his one period of action and coach Michel Therrien made the surprise decision to start third-stringer Dustin Tokarski for the rest of the series. Tokarski, who had only played 10 NHL regular season games in his career and had no playoff experience, was solid in goal, going 2-3-1 with a 2.60 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. Price had been 8-4-1 with a 2.35 average and a .919 save percentage. "That was probably one of the hardest situations you could ever throw a guy into and he really excelled," Price said of Tokarski, a former rival in the junior Western Hockey League. "He showed why hes won at different levels. "Hes an awesome guy and Ive got to tip my hat to him. He did an awesome job." It left Budaj out to dry. The Slovak has a year remaining on his contract but looks to have been bumped to third-string status. Price feels for him. "Its definitely a tough spot," he said. "Peters one of the genuinely nicest human beings Ive ever met. "Hes an unbelievable backup. Hes one of the best friends I have on this team and he showed a lot of character. He never hung his head, never pouted and he showed the utmost support for everybody, including Dustin. It takes a special person to do that." Price was on an accelerated rehab program after the injury. Going from a five-minute skate to a half hour in pads and then practising with his teammates. He said he should have been able to play if the team reached the Stanley Cup final. "I would have been pushing my luck to come back real quick, but obviously the time of year I would be trying to come back real soon," he said. "Obviously, in the playoffs you play through things, and thats what I wanted to do. But theres also the reality that no matter how bad you want to play and how bad you want to get in there, theres also a question of how effective you are going to be. That was a decision that we had to make." He said the injury was not related to the one he suffered while backstopping Canada to gold at the Sochi Olympics in February. The 26-year-old plans to continue rehab in Montreal for a short spell and return home to British Columbia to heal and get ready for next season. Kent Tekulve Jersey . The New York Yankees selected Mariano Rivera III, the son of the former record-breaking closer, in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Saturday. The 20-year-old Rivera, a starting pitcher as a sophomore at Iona College, went 2-6 with a 5.40 ERA and five complete games and a team-leading 50 strikeouts in 70 innings for the Gaels. The 5-foot-11 right-hander bears a strong resemblance physically to his famous father, who saved a major league-record 652 games and helped lead the Yankees to five World Series titles. But Rivera III allowed 72 hits and opponents batted .269 against him, and he was considered by many to be a fringe prospect because of his inexperience on the mound. Yankees manager Joe Girardi spoke to Mariano Rivera recently and asked him for a scouting report on his son. "Mo wasnt sure if he got drafted what he would do," Girardi said before the Yankees played the Royals in Kansas City on Saturday night. Neftali Feliz Jersey. "But I think its neat he got drafted by the Yankees and well see what happens." Rivera III has a fastball that sits in the low-90s and a terrific slider -- although his cutter isnt quite yet as devastating as his dads. He also wore the No. 6 at Iona, rather than his fathers familiar No. 42. "Well, his velocity, I mean, hes gotten bigger and stronger and its increased," Girardi said. "Mo didnt have much to say -- Mos always been a humble guy -- but he loves what hes doing."
