The Swarm also locked up assistant captains F Callum Crawford to a two-year contract and D Jeff Gilbert to a one-year deal. "Our captaincy program is second to none," Swarm associate general manager and head coach Joe Sullivan said. "With Andrew Suitor, Callum Crawford, and Jeff Gilbert as our captains, Id put them up against anybody in the league." As the NLLs youngest captain for the past two years, Suitor, 24, has helped the Swarm reach the Division Finals in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history. Known as one of the leagues toughest players, Suitor has become a fan favorite at The Hive with his gritty defensive skills and knack for making big plays on both sides of the ball. In 2012, Suitor was named the NLLs Transition Player of the Year and was selected to the All-Pro First Team in only his second season the league. Suitors new long-term contract ensures that the Swarms captain will be in Minnesota for many more years to come. "Words cant describe how excited I am," Suitor said. "This is the organization that gave me a chance as a rookie, then to be a young captain, and now the chance to grow up in front of these fans. Were going to continue to get better and I dont want to play anywhere but Minnesota and I think a five-year contract says a lot about that." "We are elated to have Andrew sign the longest contract in franchise history," Swarm Owner and Governor John Arlotta said. "To put it simply but emphatically, he is our Captain. He is our leader. He is the heart and soul of the Minnesota Swarm." Arlotta continued, "There arent many players who can inspire and motivate like he does, both on and off the field. Its great to have him back, and we are honored by the long-term commitment he has made to the Swarm family." Crawford is fresh off another incredible season at the helm of the Swarm offense. Named a 2013 First-Team All-Pro, the 29-year-old forward led Minnesota in scoring with 95 points (32g, 63a), which was good for fourth in the NLL. In 2013, Crawford became the Swarms all-time leader in points (344) and assists (234), and needs 26 goals in 2014 to become the franchises all-time leader in goals. Gilbert finished his second season as an assistant captain with the Swarm in 2013, and posted a career-high 15 points (3g, 12a) along with 64 loose balls. In 2012, the 30-year-old Barrie, Ontario native finished second in the NLL with 26 forced turnovers and earned NLL All-Pro Second Team honors. PITTSBURGH, Pa. Fred Jackson Seahawks Jersey . - Marc-Andre Fleury skated to centre ice, eager to add an exclamation point to his 28th victory of the season. The Pittsburgh goaltender was cut off, though, by referee Kyle Rehman before he could reach Montreal counterpart Peter Budaj. All Fleury could do was shrug his shoulders as Rehman guided him out of harms way. "Oh well," Fleury said with a laugh. It was the only thing that didnt go Fleurys way on a night the Penguins restored order to their universe. Fleury stopped 23 shots, Jussi Jokinen picked up two goals and Pittsburgh dominated the Canadiens 5-1. Evgeni Malkin added a goal and an assist, Sidney Crosby picked up his 26th of the season and Taylor Pyatt added a rare score as the Penguins rebounded from a dismal performance against lowly Florida on Monday by overwhelming Montreal. "We definitely buckled down, especially defensively," Crosby said. "Didnt give them a ton and when we did (Fleury) made some great saves and we generated some good chances and capitalized on them. It was a good game to respond." The Panthers snapped Pittsburghs club-record 13-game home winning streak by outclassing the Eastern Conference leaders on both ends of the ice to send the Penguins to their worst home defeat in more than two years. Coach Dan Bylsma called it the byproduct of a steady decline in play over the last three weeks and the rustiness that comes with the return of regulars like James Neal and Paul Martin to the lineup. Whatever the problems were, they disappeared 48 hours later. The Penguins were crisp in the neutral zone, responsible on defence and efficient on offence. They didnt pepper Price so much as they surgically picked him apart. All five goals were either the byproduct of deft passing or nifty stickwork. Rene Bourque had his seventh goal for the Canadiens but Montreal spent most of the night fruitlessly chasing the Penguins. Carey Price stopped just 16 of 21 shots before being pulled late in the second period as the Canadians fell for the fourth time in six games. "Pittsburgh is the best team in the conference, and they were the best team tonight," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said. "They played hard and they deserved success." Jokinen, who tends to score in bunches, gave the Penguins the early lead after being on the receiving end of a bit of brilliance by Malkin. The Russian star took a pass from Matt Niskanen then darted around a flat-footed Montreal defender before feeding Jokinen with a centring pass that Jokinen easily slid by a diving Price 8:48 into the game. "You cant let Malkin carry the puck like that up the ice," Bourque said. "It looked like he was playing a video game out there every time he went around us." Pyatt doubled Pittsburghs advantage later in the period, deflecting a Niskanen slapshot from the point to make it 2-0. After failing to score in his first 27 games this season — 22 with the New York Rangers and five with the Penguins — Pyatt has found the back of the net twice in three games. Bourque briefly gave the Canadiens a lift by chipping the puck by Fleury late in the first, his seventh goal of the season coming via replay after his shot was initially waved off by officials. The momentum shift didnt last. Jokinen fired a knuckling one-timer by Price 5:46 into the second period to restore Pittsburghs two-goal lead and Crosby pushed his point total to an NHL-high 69 by redirecting a pass from Chris Kunitz that made it 4-1. Malkin ended Prices night by swooping in from the right circle and putting in his own rebound. Price skated to the bench after being chased for the second time this season in favour of Budaj, who stopped all 10 shots he faced. The saves will be long forgotten. The way Budaj nodded across the rink to Fleury to start a fight that never quite happened wont, though Budaj insisted it was nothing personal. "I think there was just a scrum on the ice and there was built-up tension - you know, we were losing 5-1," Budaj said. "It was a disappointing night for us. So props to him that he wanted to do it. Thats good." NOTES: All six of Pittsburghs defencemen had at least one assist. ... Penguins G Tomas Vokoun skated for about 45 minutes on his own Wednesday morning, the first tentative steps in his return from blood clots in his pelvis. The 37-year-old Vokoun was taken off blood thinners recently though it remains unclear when Vokoun will be cleared to practice. ... Montreal scratched F George Parros and D Raphael Diaz and Alexei Emelin. ... Pittsburgh scratched F Zach Sill and D Robert Bortuzzo. ... Pittsburgh plays at the New York Islanders on Thursday while the Canadiens play at Detroit on Friday. Jermaine Kearse Jersey .S. Open. The White Sox made move Wednesday. The 28-year-old Guerra is 4-5 with a 2.90 ERA and 29 saves in three big league seasons with the Dodgers. DENVER -- Each time Michael Cuddyer really tried to sprint in the outfield grass to fully assess his strained left hamstring, he felt like it was about to give out. Cassius Marsh Seahawks Jersey . Not worth a risk. Not this early in the season. The Colorado Rockies outfielder went on the 15-day disabled list Monday, a move retroactive to Friday. To take his place on the roster, the Rockies recalled infielder Charlie Culberson from Triple-A Colorado Springs. "Extremely frustrating," Cuddyer said of his balky hamstring, something hes never experienced before in his career. "This is nagging more than anything else." The reigning NL batting champion estimates he can run at about 70 per cent before the hamstring begins to act up. "Obviously, you cant play like that," he said. "I dont know how long its going to take." Cuddyer is off to another hot start at the plate, too, hitting .317 with three homers and 10 RBIs. With Cuddyer sidelined, the Rockies will platoon players in right, with Charlie Blackmon starting Monday against the San Francisco Giants. Depth in the outfield is certainly something the Rockies have an abundance of this season. "Cuddy is one of the better players on this team. More than even on this team, in this game," shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "Its definitely going to make an impact. But were deep enough; were going to be OK. "And when we get him back, its going to be that much more of a complement to our lineup, to have such a good player. You know youre going to go through the season and people are going to have injuries. Hopefully, we get him back sooner rather than later." Cuddyer spent some time on the DL last May with a bulging disk in his neck. He hit .331 to become the sixth Rockies player to lead the league in batting. "Give him a couple of weeks to heal up and hopefully hell be ready to go at that point," manager Walt Weiss said. All-Star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was back in the lineup a day after leaving the game with tendinitis in his left knee. He said the pain flares up from time to time, especially when he takes a bad step out of the batters box like he did Sunday against Philadelphia. "I try to play my best with what I have right now," said Gonzalez, who texted his manager Sunday night to say he would be good to go against the Giants. "Its always going to be that way. Youre always going to have to deal with pain. You have to understand your body and understand what you can do. Im trying to go out there with no limits. "Im not going to think about the knee, try to run as fast as I can and make every play I can make. Its something we have to manage." Closely, too. "Just check in with him on a daily basis," Weiss said. "Well certainly keep an eye on him." Colorado may be moving closer to getting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin back from a strained shoulder. The hard-throwing righty is scheduled to make another minor league injury rehabilitation start Friday for the Sky Sox and is to throw about 80 pitches. He was eligible to be reinstated April 5. "I feel good," Chacin said. "Really good." Patrick Kerney Jersey . In Winnipeg, the Jets kick off their exhibition schedule when they host the Minnesota Wild at MTS Centre. Jon Ryan Jersey .J. Garcia, who was a four-time CFL All-Star and named to four Pro Bowls in the NFL, retired from professional football in 2010. "After several discussions with (head coach) Tom (Higgins) about candidates who could potentially help our offence right now, we welcome Jeff to our organization and to the offensive coaching staff," general manger Jim Popp said in a statement. "He brings tremendous experience, great leadership, competitiveness, and the drive to be the best. We feel that by tapping into Jeffs knowledge, he will be another key addition in getting our season turned around." The announcement comes a week after the Alouettes hired CFL Hall of Fame coach Don Matthews and former NFL quarterback and offensive co-ordinator Turk Schonert as consultants. Higgins added that Garcias experience played a major role in the teams deccision to sign the former pivot. Russell Wilson Jersey. "Jeff Garcia is a fierce competitor who has had success in every situation he has faced in professional football," Higgins said. "The addition of Jeff is ideal because he brings the expertise hes gained over his professional years from so many different systems. We are very excited to welcome Jeff to our coaching staff in his coaching debut. His CFL knowledge and comprehension of the game are key qualities that are going to be invaluable for us to improve as a team in the upcoming weeks. Over the next few days, we will be able to better evaluate all of our coaches and establish what their exact roles will be." Garcia completed 1249 passes for 16,442 yards and 111 touchdowns in 78 CFL games with the Calgary Stampeders. He also completed 2264 NFL passes for 25,537 yards and 161 touchdowns in 124 games with the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. No matter what happens to these two parties this much seems almost inevitable: Toronto will take Harrison Barnes in the NBA Draft. Justin Houston Jersey . Last year, when some thought Barnes would declare after one year at North Carolina, it was because he ended the season on a serious hot streak, filled a need for Toronto on the wing and was a player the organization could get fans excited about. This year, with everyone expecting Barnes to declare, hed represent a consolation prize for a team that didnt lose enough to secure a top pick and will take damaged goods because its better than settling for a raw power forward or reaching for a point guard. Whatever the reason, it seems like these two are destined to be together. The fact is that it isnt a horrible match. Barnes is a pure scorer who can shoot, and the Raptors desperately need shooters on the wing. Hes got some size and plays defence, and he is a very sharp player, but he never dominated at the college level like people expected him to and he too often seems content to play the game at 70 per cent rather than maxing out his talents while on the court. There is also the fact that over the course of the season two other wing players, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Bradley Beal, simply made themselves better fits for Toronto than Barnes did. Kidd-Gilchrist is like Dwane Caseys dream player; a natural leader at the small forward spot that plays all-out all of the time, excels at playing defence, rebounding and driving the ball to the hoop. Beal is a shooting guard with NBA range, a relentless offensive motor and is a solid passer and playmaker. If the Raptors got one of those two guys they could make fans feel like the losing this season was worth it. With Barnes... well with Barnes theyd be thankful that they had Jonas Valanciunas coming over. They could continue to sell him as the key incoming asset and let Barnes slide into a more complimentary role behind him. Given the Raptors season, though, thats probably what they will have to settle for. One of the "problems" that the team has faced since hiring Casey as their head coach is that this team tries too darn hard for a club in search of a high draft pick. They lost major parts to their system for long stretches - from Jerryd Bayless to Andrea Bargnani to trading away Leandro Barbosa - but nothing broke this clubs will. They are on pace to finish with a better winning percentage than they had last year (.327 currently versus .268 a season ago), theyve shown a stubborn refusal to back down to good teams and have notched wins against several of their lottery-bound counterparts (Cleveland, New Jersey, Washington, Detroit, New Orleans and Golden State). If and when they finish outside of the bottom five at the end of the season theyll have no one to blame but themselves for actually caring enough to try and win almost every game that they played. Unless the lottery gods smile on Toronto in May, there is a good chance that the only player on their radar that theyll have a shot at is Barnes, because his stock seems to have fallen far enough to land in Torontos range. Sure theyll try to trade up to take one of the more attractive assets, but the price may prove too steep that high in the draft to move up even one or two spots for a shot at Kidd-Gilchrist or Beal. Its not like landing Barnes is a sickening fate, and if the Raptors do so outside of the top-five then they are actually probably getting him at about his proper value. Getting him this year, though, carries a much different perception than getting him last year would have, and perception is key as the club looks to win back the fans it sacrificed to go down the rebuilding rabbit hole after Chris Bosh bolted for Miami. Of course, things could be worse. The Raptors could wind up selecting seventh or eighth in the draft, losing out on Barnes and having to pick from guys like Perry Jones, Jared Sullinger, Jeremy Lamb or Terrence Jones. Heck, at that point the club may explore trading out of the draft altogether. That fate doesnt seem likely, though. No, Barnes and the Raptors have been on a collision course for over a year now, and were just counting down the final months until it happens. Its almost time to stop fighting it. Both parties have shifted in their respective spheres and yet both still seem aligned with one another. Its not a matter of good or bad or right or wrong, its just inevitability. Well have to wait until May 30 for the next sign of this impending union, but at this point it just seems like a formality. Barnes and the Raptors arent an ideal fit (especially from Torontos perspective), but its good enough and that will probably be all it takes to make Barnes a Raptor at the end of June. Theyre just a little too potent and Barnes is just a little too underwhelming for it to happen any other way. Chris Jones Jersey . The Montreal Canadiens represent the nations only hope of ending a 21-year Stanley Cup drought, and thats a long shot. Official Kansas City Chiefs Jersey . The practice run started lower down the mountain because of high winds.Older, wiser, still humble and hungry to win a World Series, Jim Thome returned to a place he never imagined leaving. And as he walked into Progressive Field, a ballpark known as The Jake when he played in Cleveland the first time, Thome was flooded with memories of former teammates, games and Octobers past. Nine years later, hes wearing an Indians jersey again. "Baseballs a weird thing," Thome said. "Anything can happen." Clevelands home run king returned Friday to the Indians, the team that gave him his start and one that sorely needs him to lead them back into the AL Central race. Thome, one of eight players in history to hit 600 career homers, accepted a trade on Thursday by Minnesota to go back to the Indians Thome said when the Twins approached him, there was no doubt he was Cleveland bound. "You always think about one day returning, and when youre given the opportunity, it was really a no-brainer," he said. "Im excited. Im happy to be here." Cleveland seems equally thrilled. As Thome was driven to a pre-game news conference, riding on the back of a golf cart with Indians general manager Chris Antonetti, stadium ushers, vendors and workers applauded and cheered as he went by. Thome smiled and waved at everyone. "Jimmys back," yelled one. "Its like he never left." His new teammates wore their pants with the legs pulled high, a tribute to Thomes throwback style. With designated hitter Travis Hafner on the disabled list and facing season-ending surgery, the Indians need a big bat in the middle of their injury-thinned lineup. Theyre hoping Thome, who hit 12 homers and drove 40 runs in 71 games for the Twins, can help them close on the first-place Detroit Tigers, who lead Cleveland by 6 1-2 games. "Jim had choices and he chose to come over here," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "A lot of it has to do with the love he has for this franchise and the Cleveland Indians." Thome spent his first 12 years with Cleveland before bolting as a free agent in 2002, when the Philadelphia Phillies gave him a six-year, US$85 million contract. His decision to take more money elsewhere rankled some Indians fans who thought Thome, the likable lefty slugger from Illinois with the sweet swing, was the one guy who would turn down the riches. Albert Belle left. So did Manny Ramirez. Thome was different, they thought. Looking back, Thome doesnt regret his decision, but would take back some promises he may have made. Back then, he was quoted as saying the Indians jersey would have to be torn off his back for him to leave. "You make decisions and you live by them," he said. "Sometimes you look back and you may have said things that werent right. But you face it, you look forward, you look ahead. You look in the mirror and maybe you have been given a second cchance to say youre sorry. Mitch Morse Chiefs Jersey. Maybe thats why Im sitting here. "I would hope to say (to upset fans), maybe we can forget about the past and look ahead -- and maybe win the division together and see what happens in October." Thome arrived at the ballpark at 2:30 p.m. local time and returned to a clubhouse that hasnt changed much since his name plate was above one of the lockers. Thats when he was greeted by Sandy Alomar Jr., his former teammate and road roommate who now coaches first base for the Indians. "Seeing him almost kind of eased things a little bit," said Thome, who was batting fourth for Fridays series opener against Kansas City. Thome is being careful not to make this homecoming personal. Hes always been a team-first player, and while he may not be as productive as he once was, Thome, who turns 41 on Saturday, just wants to be one of the guys. "Its a new era and you have to adapt to a new environment," he said. "Hopefully I can do that and fit in with what these guys are doing. They dont have to fit into what Im doing. I havent gotten to that (retirement) point yet. I dont look to next year or the following year. Im here now and I just want to fit in with these guys." Thome would love to play every day, but knows thats not possible. Hes been slowed by a lower back thats bothered him for years, and Acta said hell be careful with how much he asks of Thome. Thome isnt thinking about how long he might play. Theres a chance these could be the final thirty-some games of his Hall of Fame-calibre career, but this isnt the time to talk about retirement. Not with a division race still unsettled. Thome, who helped the Indians get to two World Series, has been impressed by Clevelands roster of young talent and wants to help them go as far as they can. "Theyve done a great job all year long in getting to this point. I want to come in and be a piece. Thats my focus. Its not about next year or the year after or when Im going to retire. Its not about me. Its about trying to do whats right right now, stay healthy and hopefully we can have some fun here the next month." Thome said its a bit strange to be with teammates who were in junior high when he was mashing homers the first time for the Indians. Hes the elder statesmen now. While playing for the Phillies, Dodgers, White Sox and Twins, Thome always thought about a possible return to the Indians. He just couldnt believe it would ever come true. "Baseballs a weird game," he said. "You dont really know whats going to happen. Ive thought a lot about it. And trust me, there have been many times Ive come in here as an opponent and looked up and things have come back to me about our teams in the 90s and all the good times our fans had and how they treated us as ex-players. "Im very, very glad to be back." Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Jerseys From China Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China ' ' '

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork. Matt Barkley Cardinals Jersey .com) - Colin Wilson registered a season high of four points thanks to two goals and two assists as the Nashville Predators downed the Vancouver Canucks, 5-1, at Bridgestone Arena. Craig Smith, Filip Forsberg and Mike Fisher also tallied for the Predators, the Central Division leaders who have won four in a row and six of their last seven. Pekka Rinne stopped 20-of-21 shots before exiting early in the third period. The Finnish netminder was knocked backwards into the end boards in a collision between Vancouvers Chris Higgins and defenseman Anton Volchenkov. He was listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Carter Hutton finished the final 17-plus minutes with 10 stops. Alex Edler supplied the lone offense and Eddie Lack stopped just 25-of-30 shots for the Canucks, who have lost three in a row. Forsberg provided the hosts with some breathing room at 13:32 of the third period. He swept a puck off the boards along the right wing in the neutral zone, dodged Edler, then managed to squeeze a shot between Lacks arm and body. Fisher made it a three-goal margin only 1:59 later, when he beat a Lack pokecheck and flipped home a James Neal lead pass, and it was a 5-1 contest just over two minutes later on a power play after Smiths shot off a Seth Jones rebound clipped Wilson on its way into the Vancouver cage. Smith struck just after the four-minute mark of the first on the games initial power play and Wilson doubled the hosts advantage with 6:22 played by pumping home a shot from the right wing off a 2-on-1 break. Edlers blast pulled the Canucks within a goal at the 2:47 mark of the second period. Game Notes Wilson has posted 10 points over his last six games (4G, 6A) ... Ruff went from holding back tears during a first-period tribute that culminated in a standing ovation, to feeling anxious after the Stars nearly squandered a three-goal lead. And finally he felt relief after Dallas hung on for a 4-3 victory over the Sabres on Monday night. "It was kind of a huge relief," Ruff said. "I was really glad once the tribute was over. I wanted to get the game over with. A lot of good memories here." Add another one to the list. The Sabres winningest coach came away a victor on the visitors bench after goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped the final 10 shots he faced to preserve the win. Tyler Seguin capped a three-goal, first-period outburst, and Jamie Benns goal midway through the second period stood up as the winner in Ruffs first game against his former team after his 16-year tenure in Buffalo ended with him being fired on Feb. 20. "Well, we couldnt just give it to him. We had to make sure he earned it," Seguin said, with a smile referring to how close the Stars came to spoiling Ruffs homecoming. "No, it was a good win. And were moving on now." Alex Goligoski and Vernon Fiddler also scored, and Erik Cole had two assists for the Stars (5-5-1), who snapped a four-game road losing streak. They also won for the first time in eight regular-season trips to Buffalo. Not including playoffs, Dallas had gone 0-5-2 at Buffalo since a 4-2 win on Oct. 7, 1997, which happened to be Ruffs first home game as Sabres coach. Matt Moulson scored twice his Sabres debut a day after being acquired in a trade that sent Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders, and Buffalo (2-11-1) showed encouraging signs of progress despite matching its worst start to a season in franchise history. "Tonight, there were some of probably the most positive signs Ive seen in a long, long time," said Steve Ott, who also scored for Buffalo. "Obviously, weve got too find the end result to the game. Deone Bucannon Cardinals Jersey. But thats where were at. Theres no sugar-coating where we need to be, and our record indicates what it is." The Sabres dropped to 0-7-1 at home, their longest home winless skid to open a season. The eight-game home drought is also the teams second-longest single-season skid, and four short of the franchise-low set in 1990-91. Another slow start proved too much to overcome. Buffalo has now been outscored 19-2 in the first period this season after Seguin put the Stars ahead 3-1 with 2:08 left in the opening frame. Benns goal 10:55 into the second period put the Stars up 4-1 and stood up as the game-winner. Seguin started the play by checking Ville Leino off the puck at the left circle. After a give-and-go with Cole, Seguin fed a pass through the crease to Benn who beat goalie Ryan Miller at the right post. Ott scored a power-play goal 1:59 later, and Moulson cut the Stars lead to 4-3 with 2:43 left in the second period, when he converted a loose puck in front. Aside from the victory, the highlight for Ruff was the warm welcome he received in Buffalo, where he still maintains a home. Ruff, who was hired by Dallas in June, received a loud and lengthy standing ovation during the first break, when the Sabres showed highlights of him as a player and coach. Ruff couldnt resist in glancing up the board, at times smiling and at another point biting his lip. Several fans brought Ruff jerseys and hand-drawn signs, among which read, "We love you Lindy," and "Welcome home." That was a distinct change for Ruff from the last time he was behind a bench in Buffalo. Ruff and the Sabres were booed off the ice following a 2-1 loss to Winnipeg on Feb. 19. Ruff hadnt set foot into the arena since holding a farewell news conference three days later. "The answer to that is yes, obviously," Ruff said, referring to feeling a sense of closure. "I guess from the Buffalo side, it was great to see the emotion come back into the building as they started to come back. It turned out to be a darn good hockey game." XALAPA, Mexico -- Canadas womens basketball team took another step closer in its quest for a world championship berth. Hugh Thornton Colts Jersey . Kendel Ross scored 16 points to lead the undefeated Canadians to an 89-45 rout of Venezuela at the FIBA Americas Championship on Tuesday, assuring themselves a spot in the semifinals. But after three lopsided victories, Canada knows it faces a much tougher test Wednesday in Cuba for top spot in Group A. "They play hard when they need to and when they have a lead, they kind of coast," Canadas coach Lisa Thomaidis said of Cuba. "So we need to have some realistic impression of what theyre going to bring and overestimate what weve seen from them so far." Kim Gaucher, Kia Nurse, and Natalie Achonwa added 12 points apiece for Canada, while Tamara Tatham grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. The world No. 9-ranked Canadians opened the tournament with a 75-37 win over Jamaica, then cruised past Chile 93-51. The 14th-ranked Cubans have won by similarly lopsided scores, while Brazil and Puerto Rico have dominated the other side of the draw. The Canadians shot 47 per cent from the field against Venezuela, outrebounding their opponent 52-25, and outscoring them 16-4 on second-chance points. Still, Thomaidis wasnt pleased with her teams performance. "We just werent very sharp, our offensive precision was not there. We didnt think we brought a lot of defensive energy," Thomaidis said. "Its one of those tough games, the result should be a foregone conclusion. However you still want to maintain that level of intensity and energy heading into our most important game, which is (Wednesday)." The lopsided games have allowed Thomaidis to rotate her roster, giving key players such as Gaucher and guard Shona Thorburn some rest. The team had talked before the tournament began about the importance of maintaining their focus when theyre not playing. "When were on the bench, you have to be engaged, whether youre bringing energy by talking to your teammates or just cheering your teammates on," Ross said. "Thats really what you have to do, you have to stay in the game, you cant just be on the bench kind of looking around wondering whats going on in Mexico. You really have to keep yourself focused and be ready for your number to be called." Canada is gunning for its third straight world championship appearance, and needs to finish top three in Mexico to earn a spot in the 2014 world tournament in Istanbul. Dioner Navarro had an RBI single in the second, which ended Pinedas scoreless streak at 10 innings. The right-hander avoided further damage by getting an inning-ending double play from Ryan Goins with the bases loaded. Toronto scored twice in the fifth, on Pinedas throwing error after fielding a bunt and a wild pitch. Considered the front runner, Pineda is competing with David Phelps, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno for the final rotation spot behind opening day starter CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Masahiro Tanaka and Ivan Nova. Manager Joe Girardi is expected to announce the choice Tuesday. Blue Jays left-hander Mark Buehrle gave up one run and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Buehrle made the start on his 35th birthday. "I just dropped the family off at the airport," Buehrle said. "Im going to go home and clean up the house." The left-hander took a shutout into the sixth before giving up a run on Derek Jeters double-play grounder. Buehrle will make his final spring training start in the first of two exhibition games in Montreal on Friday night against the New York Mets. PARIS - Montreals Eugenie Bouchard recovered from early breaks in both sets to reach the second week of the French Open as she beat Swede Johanna Larsson 7-5, 6-4 Friday. Barry Church Cowboys Jersey . The 18th-seeded Bouchard, an Australian Open semifinalist earlier this year, showed fighting spirit in winning her 84-minute match with the 99th-ranked Larsson in the pairs first meeting. Bouchard finished with 27 winners and 30 unforced errors, breaking on six of 11 chances while losing serve four times. Bouchard lost the opening game but recovered nicely to take a 5-3 first-set lead. She got into trouble as Lasson levelled for 5-all but claimed the set with a break for 7-5 on her third set point. The Canadian lost serve in the third game of the second, breaking back in the fourth to tie the set at 2. Bouchard earned a 4-2 lead as she move on to victory, with Larsson donating a double-fault for a second match point before volleying a forehand return low into the net. Lindsey Vonn, United States, 62.(tie) Annemarie Moser-Proell, Austria, 62.MILWAUKEE -- Jake Westbrook didnt last long enough to earn the victory on Wednesday, but the light-hitting St. Louis pitcher used his bat to spark a six-run, second-inning outburst that led to a Cardinals win over the Milwaukee win. The Cardinals jumped out to a seven-run lead and then held on for an 8-6 victory. Westbrook, who entered the game hitting only .167 with two RBIs this season, smacked a bases-loaded double into the left-centre field gap that scored two runs, starting an onslaught that propelled the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. "Im happy to be able to contribute in that sense, especially with the bases loaded and nobody out and to put a good swing on the ball," Westbrook said. Westbrook didnt fare as well on the mound, however. He fell one out short of earning this eighth win of the year, giving up four earned runs and nine hits in 4 2-3 innings. He walked one and struck out one during a 75-pitch outing. In his previous start on Aug. 16, when he threw a career-high 124 pitches, Westbrook gave up six earned runs in 6 2-3 innings. "I still felt like I pitched a lot better than I have been in terms of throwing strikes and getting ahead of guys," Westbrook said. "I actually made some good pitches that they put some good swings on. Getting two quick outs in the fifth and not being able to finish it off is pretty frustrating for me. "The bullpen came in and picked me up and finished it off, and the offence was great." Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig hit towering home runs in the game-changing second inning. Matt Holliday also homered later in the game and Shane Robinson had three hits for the Cardinals, who remain close behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central race. "It was a big win," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Those are the ones youve got to find a way to win, when you put that kind of offensive production up early." After taking a one-run lead in the first inning on a double by Craig, the Cardinals torched Brewers starter Tom Gorzelanny (3-5) in the second. "You make mistakes and you pay for them, especially against good-hitting teams," Gorzelanny said. "I left balls over the middle, (and made) bad pitch selection." Following Matt Carpenters sacrifice fly, Beltran launched a two-run shot that caromed off the centre-field scoreboard. With two out, Craig hit a solo homer to right-centre. "We are happy that we were able to win the series," Beltran said. "That is basically what is importantt for us right now. Andrew Gachkar Jersey. " The Brewers cut into the lead in the third on a three-run homer by Aramis Ramirez, and then added two runs in the fifth. Juan Francisco broke out of an 0-for-15 slump, during which he struck out 10 times, with a run-scoring single. Sean Halton drove in another run with a hit, cutting the deficit to 7-5 and chasing Westbrook. "(Westbrook) started out pretty good, but for whatever reason they were finding the good part of the bat and finding holes," Matheny said. Kevin Siegrist struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Bianchi with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning. Siegrist (2-1) recorded two outs to notch the victory. Four Cardinals relievers held the Brewers to one run over the final 5 1-3 innings to preserve the win. Hollidays solo home run in the ninth extended the lead to 8-5. Edward Mujica earned his 33rd save in 35 attempts despite giving up a long solo home run to Logan Schafer with one out in the ninth. Gorzelanny surrendered seven runs and 10 hits in 3 2-3 innings. He walked one and struck out five. "He didnt command the ball that well early and then they also hit some pretty good pitches. We know they are a good hitting club, and when you dont hit your spots, they are going to put a good swing on it," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. Khris Davis had a career-best three hits for Milwaukee. "He keeps showing he can hang in there. He works the count well, which I really like," Roenicke said. "Hes an aggressive swinger, but hes not a hacker. He doesnt just go up there and swing at everything. He swings at the pitch he wants to swing at." NOTES: Milwaukee reliever Rob Wooten was placed on the paternity list. Wooten didnt make it back to North Carolina in time for the birth of his daughter. "He walked into the room and (his wife) was holding the baby," Roenicke said. "But everyone is fine." ... Pitcher Donovan Hand was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to replace Wooten. PHILADELPHIA - A person familiar with the situation says Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson faces a four-game suspension for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy. Lamarcus Joyner Jersey . The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the league hasnt announced the suspension, says Johnson violated the leagues performance-enhancing drug policy. Johnson played all but one snap last season after being the fourth overall selection in the draft. Its not known if Johnson will appeal the suspension. Hes allowed to play in preseason games. Johnson was part of an offensive line unit that started every game last season, helped the Eagles set several offensive team records and win the NFC East. Allen Barbre or Dennis Kelly could replace him the first month of the season. Kelly started seven games at right tackle in 2012. The Philadelphia Daily News first reported the suspension. Nolan Cromwell Rams Jersey . Louis Blues continued on Wednesday night in Denver. "Yes he is the second baseman," said manager John Gibbons, confirming Goins has made the team. "Thats official today." The Blue Jays love Goins glove. General manager Alex Anthopoulos said earlier this spring he believes Goins is the best defensive second baseman the club has had since the days of Orlando Hudson, going so far as to call Goins Gold Glove-caliber. Goins offence, specifically his lack of offensive production, is where the concern lies, although youd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the organization to admit to it publicly. Instead, there is great optimism, most notably from hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, whos developed a bond with Goins dating back to a week spent together in Kansas City during the offseason. The two continue to work on adjusting Goins swing, the latest tweak made Sunday morning before a trip to play the Yankees. Goins has changed the position of his hands in his stance on multiple occasions, first bringing them down and then bringing them in closer to his body. The latest adjustment involves the elimination of a small hitch as Goins cocks his bat, allowing him to get his bat through the strike zone quicker and better square up the pitch. The hitch wasnt happening during soft toss and batting practice but would appear in game action. Far too often, Goins was rolling over on pitches. He hit into a double play in his first at-bat against the Yankees on Sunday but his contact was solid, which is viewed as a positive step. The pitch was a 94 mile per hour cut fastball. The club says it isnt just about results. "I just took a chance yesterday of getting (his hands) back even further and then just saying, feel like theyre not moving, which theyre still going to move but mentally hes thinking theyre not doing anything, load with your body, and his BP was probably the best its been yesterday," said Seitzer. "I feel like Im in a good place," said Goins. "Going into the season I feel like Im ready to go, ready to get it going. The hits havent come in spring training but Ive really made some strides and had some production and really been working on stuff so that when the season comes I dont have to worry. Thats kind of what spring training is for, to get your timing and get everything ready for the season so I think Im in a good spot." The Blue Jays held their annual minor league awards banquet at the Bobby Mattick complex on Monday morning. Goins took home the Triple-A MVP award for his 2013 season at Buffalo. He acquitted himself well defensively with the Blue Jays in 34 games following a mid-August call up. Hell bat ninth, where his .609 OPS from last season belongs and Gibbons has said Goins will need to "hold his own." The club is willing to trade some offence for defence at the bottom of the order. "Thats my job is to make productive outs," said Goins. "Whatever way I can help the team. Hitting a ground ball to the right side to get a guy over, bunting guys over, getting them in from third, just however I can get them in Im willing to do it. Whatever I need to do to stay here." "Hes doing everything that he needs to do to give himself the best chance against big league pitching," said Seitzer. "Im ecstatic from that standpoint. Hes seeing the ball good, recognitions good, plate disciplines been much better than what I understand its been in the pastt. T.J. McDonald Jersey. Hes very confident on whats going on." REYES UNDERGOES MRI While Jose Reyes insists hes not concerned about the tightness hes feeling in his left hamstring, its enough of a concern that he underwent an MRI on Monday afternoon. Reyes was lifted after the third inning of Saturdays game against Detroit. Is this something he would play through if the games mattered? "Its not the regular season," said Reyes. "The regular season hasnt started yet so I cant think that way. Right now, thats my goal is to be ready for opening day." Manager John Gibbons says Ryan Goins likely will be the clubs shortstop on days when Jose Reyes needs a rest or is injured. Goins is a natural shortstop. MORROWS OUTING Brandon Morrow pitched five innings and threw a personal spring high of 74 pitches in Mondays 6-3, rain-shortened loss to the Phillies. His line was mixed: four earned runs on five hits, three walks and four strikeouts. "Obviously I would have liked to not have walked the two guys in the two scoring innings," said Morrow. "That kind of set up the scoring innings for them." Morrow has one more start before hes penciled in to pitch either the fourth or the fifth game of the season. Hell make that start on Saturday at Olympic Stadium in Montreal and the plan is for Morrow to exceed the 74 pitches he threw on Monday. Manager John Gibbons says the club will closely monitor Morrows pitch count during his early regular season outings. JANSSEN MAKES FIRST GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE APPEARANCE Casey Janssen, whos been on his own program this spring as he battles stiffness in the back of his pitching shoulder, stranded two Phillies singles over a scoreless inning in his first Grapefruit League appearance this year. A control artist not known for his velocity, Janssen wasnt concerned that his fastball topped out at 86 miles per hour. "I think as I continue to challenge my arm the velocity will come," said Janssen. "Still kind of feel like youre kind of breaking through some stuff from the winter and each and every day you kind of hit a new high and continue on like that." Janssen plans to pitch on back to back days on Thursday, against the Phillies in Clearwater, and on Friday versus the Mets in Montreal. TUIASOSOPO ARRIVES Its been quite the odyssey for Matt Tuiasosopo, who was finally in a Blue Jays uniform on Monday morning. "A little crazy," he said. "Flown a lot of miles." Tuiasosopo was in Sydney, Australia, where his former team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, played two season-opening games against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was placed on waivers and picked up by the Blue Jays on Friday, necessitating a Sydney-to-Dallas-to-Tampa trip, 16 hours all told, not to mention the time change. Tuiasosopo is a right-handed hitter with some pop. He has a career .638 OPS hitting against left-handers in a limited major league sample size. He offers the Jays some defensive versatility, able to play the two corner outfield positions as well as first base and third base. "Not a lot of time, just a couple of days," said Tuiasosopo. "Better make the most of every opportunity I get." CAMP CUTS The Blue Jays pared down their major league roster by four bodies on Monday. Outfielder Anthony Gose was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Its unlikely Sundays game between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets will be played in Buffalo. Quinton Dial 49ers Jersey . After the giant snowstorm Buffalo experienced this week, and with more snow expected to come, the game is likely to be moved to either Detroit, Washington, or Pittsburgh, according to a report from ESPN. NFL Networks Ian Rapoport reported that Pittsburgh is an unlikely option because there are several high school and college games to be played at Heinz Field this weekend and the Steelers want to change out the turf afterwards. Earlier in the day New York governor Andrew Cuomo considers Sunday’s Bills game against the New York Jets “impractical. Everybody would love to see a Bills game go forward, but I think even more, everybody wants to make sure public safety comes first, Cuomo said at Thursday news conference, according to ESPN. Detroit Red Wings prospect Teemu Pulkkinen is scheduled for an in-person hearing with the NHL for his hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Mike Kostka on Tuesday. Tony Dorsett Cowboys Jersey . An in-person hearing means there is a possibility any suspension could be five games or more. Early in the first period, Kostka was gaining possession of the puck and coming out from behind his own net when he was hit into the end boards. A scrum ensued with Kostka laying hurt on the ice. Kostka left the game and did not return. Pulkkinen was assessed a five-minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct on the play. J.J. Wilcox Jersey . A huge and mobile defence corps simply did not allow many shots at the Canadian net. Defensive specialists like Rhett Warrener, Curtis Brown, Chad Allen and Nolan Baumgartner anchored in the Canadian zone, while more gifted skaters like Wade Redden and Chris Phillips were encouraged to stick to defence. The results were staggering. With Jose Theodore and Marc Denis sharing the net, Canada set a tournament record by allowing just eight goals in six games. Theodore, winning all four of his starts and posting a 1.50 goals against average, was named the tournaments top goaltender. On offence, Canada relied on the passion and power of Jarome Iginla, who was named the tournaments top forward after scoring 12 points. Christian Dube was another sniper for Canada, counting four big goals. As usual, Canada had a bunch of tough checkers to go with the glamour boys. Alyn McCauley was a quiet leader, while the likes of Hnat Domenichelli and Tyler Wright aggressively banged the boards. Whatever star power this team lacked up front, it more than made up for in effort. Surprisingly, Canada still had the tournaments second-best offence, scoring a total of 27 goals. There were three Canadians on the all-star team; Iginla, Baumgartner and Theodore. One goalie, one defenceman and one forward. It was a fitting representation of Canadas balanced line-up. All that being said, the competition wasnt exactly stiff in 1996. In fact, the top two scorers after Iginla were Florian Keller and Marco Sturm of the eighth-place German squad. Still, it was Canadas fourth gold medal in a row. CHARLOTTE, N. Womens Lance Alworth Jersey .C. -- The Panthers leader returned to the field Thursday. Quarterback Cam Newton practiced for the first time since undergoing ankle surgery on March 19, working in 7-on-7 drills during the teams final day of minicamp. Newton said he felt sluggish on his first day back. "My mind was moving faster than my body," Newton said. Newton said his left ankle is not yet fully recovered. However, he expects to be close to full speed when training begins July 25. "Im feeling better than I thought I would at this point," Newton said. Coach Ron Rivera said Newton was a little high on his passes, but thats expected having been out for so long. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound quarterback has thrown some passes on the side during recent weeks, but this was his first time working in live drills. "He talked about feeling like hed been cooped up and finally getting a chance to spread his wings a little bit," Rivera said. "He made some good decisions, made the right reads. Just didnt deliver the ball where he needed to. That will come with time. The healthier he gets, the better he gets, the more hell be in tune with what he needs to do." Rivera said Newton was cleared to practice medically Wednesday, but none of Newtons teammates knew hed practice until he took the field Thursday. The coach said he felt it was important for Newton to practice once before the start of training camp. "It just shows the team that hes coming, hes getting ready and hes working hard to get himself ready," Rivera said. "It was good to see his teammates see him out there." Said Newton: "Today is a step forward. Moving forward, this doesnt stop for me. I have to report back here during this off-season to try to get back to 100 per cent so I can be on schedule during training camp." Carolinas wide receiver position underwent major changes this off-season, so Thursday was Newtons first chance to throw passes in a live practice to guys like Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant, Kelvin Benjamin and Tiquan Underwood. Center Ryan Kalil said having Newton sit out most of OTAs and minicamp is not ideal, but feels like hell have plenty of time to develop chemistry with his new group of receivers. Kalil points to Newtons rookie season in 2011 when he didnt have any OTAs or minicamp to fine tune his skills because of the NFL lockout. But Newton still went on to win Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year honours. "He played pretty well that season with a bunch of guys he hadnt thrown to before," Kalil said. "So Im not worried." Rivera said the next hurdle for Newton to clear is running. Newton, 25, has been doing most of his running inside on an underwater treadmill to alleviate any added stress on the ankle. Offensive co-ordinator Mike Shula is expected to limit Newtons reps with running plays when training camp arrives. "Were not going to force anything," Rivera said. "Weve already told the doctors they control the situation." Newton has started all 48 games for the Panthers over the last three seasons. But hes one of only a handful of returning players who are guaranteed a starting spot on offence. The Panthers still have questions to answer at both tackle spots, left guard and right guard and at all of the wide receiver positions. "Competition is healthy," Rivera said. Chargers Jersey .ca. The 36-year-old Datsyuk was injured in the Red Wings exhibition opener at Pittsburgh on Monday night when checked into the glass by Penguins defenceman Rob Scuderi. The Red Wings open the season Oct. 9 against Boston. The good news is that theres two weeks to go before the regular season starts, Holland said. ST. Tyrone Crawford Cowboys Jersey . PETERSBURG, Florida – Drew Hutchison meant business when he arrived in Dunedin for spring training. He had a point to prove: hes back, and hes not worried about his surgically repaired elbow, as he enters what he hopes will be his first full season in the major leagues. "I expected make the team and now Im ready to go perform," said Hutchison after his final Grapefruit League start on March 27. Manager John Gibbons and pitching coach Pete Walker rave about Hutchisons poise. They love his mound presence. Theyve been thrilled with his bounce back from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery dating back to his appearances in the Arizona Fall League. Hutchison, a command and control pitcher, routinely pumped his fastball to the plate at 92-94 miles per hour, painting the corners along the way. "We like him," said manager John Gibbons. "Hes got a chance to be a real good one. Ever since he had the Tommy John hes thrown better than he was." Results in spring training often dont matter. With Hutchison, they did. He was competing for a roster spot. He needed to show the Blue Jays he was healthy and could be consistently effective. As a young player, just 23 years old, with options, he needed to drastically outperform veterans who were out of options. He accomplished all that with a 1.80 ERA and 0.800 WHIP in four Grapefruit League starts, and gets the nod in Tuesday nights second game of the season-opening series in Tampa Bay. Not that it surprises him. "I thought Id come into camp and do exactly what I did," said Hutchison. "Thats my expectation level and thats what I feel I would be able to do." Hutchison often repeats variations of the word "expect." He has high expectations of himself, he expects to succeed; hes expecting a long and healthy career. He speaks with supreme confidence but without a hint of arrogance. Its all matter of fact. "I dont understand, at least from my perspective thats just the way Ive approached things and thats the way Ive always been," said Hutchison. "I expect that out of myself and now its time, spring trainings over and its time to go perform and win because thats what its all about." Whether Hutchisons approach translates into a successful season will be known only with the passage of time. Gibbons and Walker are looking for someone on which they can rely. The club has a reasonable idea of what to expect from R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle. It isnt clear what the Blue Jays will get from Hutchison and Brandon Morrow, both because of their respective injury histories and because neither has shown the ability, yet, to be a front-line starter over the course of a full season. "Hes a pitcher," said Gibbons. "It takes effort for him but hes kind of an effortless type guy. I think hes going to have a big, big year for us. I really do." Surely Hutchison must have had his doubts during the laborious rehab of his elbow? He insists he didnt. "Thats just the way Ive always been," said Hutchison. "I just expect a lot out of myself and I expect a high level from myself. Thats not to try to be, you know, thats just how I am." Chuck Howley Jersey . According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Leafs remain interested in re-signing Raymond, but several other teams have reached out to the former 25-goal scorer. Lance Dunbar Cowboys Jersey .com) - The Vancouver Canucks hope an upcoming stretch of home games will be enough to get the club into the postseason. http://www.footballcowboysstore.us/authentic-robert-newhouse-cowboys-jersey/ .com) - Andy Murray is back in the Australian Open final.CHICAGO - Paul Maholm sees no reason the Chicago Cubs cant win, even though they havent done much of that lately. The Cubs agreed to a one-year contract that guarantees the left-hander US$4.75 million and should add depth to their starting rotation. The deal announced Tuesday includes a $4.25 million salary for this year and $6.5 million club option for 2013 and $500,000 buyout. "The guys that are there have the ability to win," Maholm said. "For whatever reason, it wasnt happening." He says theres no clear-cut favourite in the NL Central and that the Cubs have a chance as long as "everybody just has their normal years." The 29-year-old Maholm made 26 starts for Pittsburgh last season, going 6-14 despite a 3.66 ERA, before shutting it down because of a left shoulder strain. He was 53-73 over seven seasons with the Pirates. Maholm said the shoulder shouldnt be an issue. Hes been long tossing and plans to start bullpen sessions next week. "It was a pulled muscle," Maholm said. "It wasnt anything huge. More or less the timing of when it happened is the reason I missed the end of the season. I just wanted to make sure that it was healthy and I didnt do anything further to my shoulder." In Chicago, he joins Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster of Gibsons, B.C., and newcomer Chris Volstad in the rotation, along with Randy Wells and possibly Jeff Samardzija. The Cubs have been listening to offers for Garza and would like top prospects, but general manager Jed Hoyer insisted they werent setting themselves up to make another move by signing Maholm. Kyle Wilber Jersey. "Im not going to comment on trade rumours, but it is important to know that this isnt a precursor deal," Hoyer said. Meanwhile, reliever Kerry Wood remains unsigned. Hoyer said management still would like to get a deal completed and retain the popular veteran. "We continue to want Kerry back in Chicago, and weve offered him a substantial raise and we certainly hope it gets done," he said. As for Maholm, Hoyer said, "His won-loss record really doesnt reflect his ability. Hes pitched on some teams in Pittsburgh that have struggled, but hes been a guy that takes the ball, eats a lot of innings and has really kept his team in games." Maholm allowed two earned runs or fewer in 14 of his 26 starts last season but got the win in only six of those outings. His run support average of 3.38 was the fifth-lowest in the National League. Maholm said he preferred to stay in the NL, particularly in the Central now that slugger Albert Pujols is gone and Prince Fielder is possibly on his way out. Another draw in Chicago was playing for new Cubs manager Dale Sveum, who managed in the Pittsburgh system before Maholm arrived. "A lot of guys that I played with in Pittsburgh played for him and loved him," Maholm said. "Hes very knowledgeable, (has a) passion for the game, works hard. I got the chance to talk to him a little after Christmas, and Im looking forward to getting to pick his mind." SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants outfielder Cody Ross wants his teammates to openly talk about making the playoffs, even if the defending World Series champions still have a lot of ground to make up. Jake Rudock Jersey . At least now San Francisco has an offence to back up Ross confidence. Ross, Carlos Beltran and Pablo Sandoval homered in a rare show of power at AT&T Park, and the Giants beat the San Diego Padres 8-3 on Monday night. They still trail NL West-leading Arizona by 8 1/2 games but the outlook is a lot more encouraging than it was a few days ago. Thats why Ross wants San Francisco thinking big. "Why not?" said Ross, who also singled, doubled and scored three times. "Were not going to give in. Were the defending champs and weve got something to prove. Were going to play through and see what happens." Until recently, the Giants were only proving to be a big disappointment -- at least offensively. But one day after scoring eight runs in a win over the Dodgers -- the most runs by San Francisco in more than a month -- the Giants matched it against the Padres. Its the first time the Giants, the majors lowest-scoring team since the All-Star break, have done that in back-to-back games since the first two games of the 2010 World Series. "Its good to see the guys loosen up and swing the bats like were capable of," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Were trying to finish up strong. Were hanging by a thread, but its not over." The setting was a lot different than a year ago at this time when these teams battled for the division title in a race that went down to the final day of the regular season. The Giants still harbour slim post-season hopes this year while the Padres are just finishing out the string. Aaron Harang (13-6), who was 4-0 in six previous starts against the Giants, took the loss after allowing all three home runs. The burly right-hander remains three wins shy of his career high. "I felt like I couldnt get comfortable out there the first few innings," Harang said. "Sometimes when you are hitting your spots in the bullpen its not necessarily a good thing when you get (in the game). I just couldnt get into a good rhythm and it felt like I was off mechanically." Eric Surkamp (2-0) pitched 5 2-3 innings for his second major league victory -- both coming against San Diego. The left-hander, who beat the Padres on Sept. 6, allowed seven hits and walked one. That might be enough to keep the 24-year-old in the Giants rotation. Barry Zito, who has two years remaining on the $126 million deal he signed before the 2007 season, came off the disabled list Sunday but will most likely work out of the bullpen unless one of the other starters gets hurt. Most of San Franciscos offence came from the big three of Beltran, Ross and Sandoval. Beltran went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs, Ross added a pair of RBIs and Sandoval capped the night with a towering, three-run homer in the seventh. Its the first time the Giants have hit three home runs in a game at their waterfront ballpark since Sept. 30, 2010. "Its nice to get back-to-back games like this from the offence," Ross said. "Its been a lot looser in here the last five or six days. Everyones not so uptight and tense and trying to hard. Maybe that is the key." Beltran provided some early offence when he snapped an 0-for-15 skid with a two-run shot off Harang in the first. The ball easily cleared the wall in right field, bounced on the cement landing and fell into McCovey Cove. It was Beltrans 18th home run of the season and third since being traded from the Mets to San Francisco on July 28. Ross homered leading off the third, then added an RBI single in the seventh. Sandoval put the game out of reach with his three-run drive off reliever Andrew Carpenter. Harang left after the fifth. He allowed six hits and struck out four. San Diego, which fell to 1-4 on its seven-game road trip, scored a run in the fourth with the help of Surkamps throwing error, then added two more in the sixth on four consecutive two-out singles to chase the San Francisco rookie. Kyle Banks knocked in one run and Orlando Hudson singled in Chris Denorfia to cut the lead to 4-3. San Diego put two runners on in the eighth but failed to score. Sergio Romo, the fifth San Francisco pitcher, got Hudson to hit into an inning-ending double play, then retired the side in the ninth. Ryan Bolta (@TSNBolta) and the case for Ohio State: If in fact Ohio State completes an undefeated season and wins the Big 10 title on Saturday, they deserve to play for the BCS National Championship. An undefeated team in a power conference has never been passed over in favor of a team with a blemish on their record, and that should remain the case. Naysayers will point to a below-average strength of schedule, close victories or to the SEC right to have a team in the championship because their conference is the deepest. Those naysayers couldnt be more wrong. It is incredibly hard to go an entire NCAA football season without a loss. There is a reason only one team, also Ohio State, accomplished the feat last year. No matter the level of competition, winning every single game is incredibly difficult. Many teams would be part of the conversation if not for slip ups against lesser opponents. Oklahoma State lost to West Virginia, Michigan State lost to Notre Dame, and Stanford beat two top 10 teams but lost to unranked Utah and USC. There have been hundreds of examples this year that just because you enter the game as a favorite, it doesnt mean youll head home with a victory. Also, on the topic of strength of schedule there is one key fact that continues to be overlooked. If playing tough opponents is of such high importance, it would be Florida State being replaced in the national championship. According to Jeff Sagarins formula Ohio State has played the 61st toughest schedule while Florida States ranks 66th. Thats before OSU plays No. 10 Michigan State on Saturday, while FSU gets No. 20 Duke. Ohio State has played the tougher schedule, and that gap will grow on Saturday. Another popular argument is the big 10 being “down” this year. The depth in the Big 10 isnt what it was years ago, but the fact is it produced a power matchup in the title game. Ohio State will play a top 10 team with a vaunted defense and only one loss on its resume. Florida State gets a two-loss traditional basketball school in Duke that for the first time in history won 10 football games this season. The Seminoles are 29-point favorites over the Blue Devils. None of this dismisses Auburn from the conversation, just points to the fact if you were to have them leapfrog an undefeated team you are looking at the wrong one in the Buckeyes. As for Auburn, the case against them is simple, they are not perfect. I believe that any loss eliminates your should there be two power conference undefeated teams, but well dig deeper. Auburn not only lost a football game, but they lost by two touchdowns to an LSU program that sits No. 15 in the BCS rankings. As impressive as their win was against Alabama, we cannot just look at what theyve done lately. College football requires you to look at the whole resume, and the Tigers have a glaring two-touchdown defeat on theirs. No. 21 Wisconsin would surely be higher if not for their very questionable loss to Arizona State on a game where the referees decided the outcome by not spotting the ball for a game-winning field goal try. Northwestern was 16th in the rankings when Ohio State beat them by 10 points with ESPN College Gameday in attendance. The Buckeyes won a dog fight in their rivalry week game and would need a victory over a top 10 opponent in Michigan State to make the BCS Championship. OSU also beat 8-win Iowa by double-dights and 7-win San Diego state by 26. When comparing wins, was Auburns last-second win against Texas A&M really more impressive than Ohio State over the Hawkeyes? Id argue that is wasnt. Admittedly OSU didnt play the strongest schedule, but there is some proof that Ohio State is in fact a powerhouse worthy of their No. 2 ranking. This was still the schedule of a team in a power conference, and one that cannot be ignored. All of the SEC backers need not look any further than Alabama coach Nick Saban. After losing to Auburn Saban mentioned coaching his team to treat the entire season as if it were March Madness, as in you need to win your games to advance. The most decorated coach in the SEC admitted that a loss eliminates your team, unless of course there arent two undefeated teams to play for the championship. If not for sanctions against Ohio State last season, Alabama would have missed out on the title game under those same conditions. One otheer popular point is Urban Meyer successfully lobbying for Florida back in 2006. Womens Haloti Ngata Jersey. The difference then was only one team (ironically Ohio State) was undefeated heading into the bowl season. So any quotes from the former Gator and current Buckeye are taken out of context if they are being used to show who he believes should be in the title game. Whether it be Auburn, Alabama or potentially Missouri, the fact remains that no matter what conference you come from one-loss is too many if there are two teams remaining from power conferences that are chasing perfection. Mike Marshall (@marshallmike) and the case for Auburn: When No. 3 Auburn and No. 5 Missouri meet at the Georgia Dome on Saturday, they will be playing for the Southeastern Conference championship. Despite their not-quite-perfect records, they should also be playing for a berth in the BCS National Championship. Sure the Ohio State has won a school record 24 straight games and is 12-and-0. But youre “going to tell a group of young men, who just went 12-1 in a most difficult schedule, that they dont have a chance to play for a national championship? Im going to need help with that one.” Thats a quote from Urban Meyer back in 2006. At the time, Meyers Florida Gators were 12-and-1, ranked fourth in the BCS standings, and outside of the national title picture. Meyer was lobbying for the Gators to jump USC and Michigan and earn a berth in the BCS Championship. In the end, both the Trojans and Wolverines lost, and Florida got its shot, beating Ohio State by 27 points, and beginning an unprecedented run of 7-straight national titles for the SEC. Ironically, this year Meyer is on the other side of the debate, lobbying for the unbeaten Buckeyes to get a bid over a 1-loss SEC champ. But if anything, his argument from 2006 rings more true now than ever before. Forget the fact that both Auburn and Missouri went from 3-and-9 and 5-and-7 a year ago, to 11-and-1 this season. Gus Malzahn and Gary Pinkel have already both been nominated for Coach of the Year. Forget that Auburns season culminated with a historic Iron Bowl win, their second miracle in as many games, knocking off the program that was gunning for an unprecedented third straight national title. Forget that Mizzou closed their season with a win over Johnny Manziel and then No. 21 Texas A&M, holding the reigning Heisman trophy winner to just 216 total yards, statistically the worst game of his career. The strength of schedule of an SEC champ should trump an unbeaten season of a team in a has-been conference. And the strength of schedules arent even close. Both Auburn and Missouri beat four top-25 teams this season. Ohio State beat two. The Buckeyes rang up wins against five teams with losing records. Auburn played just two. Auburns FBS opponents were a combined 20 games above .500 this season, Missouris 10. Ohio States? Eight games under. Sure both Auburn and Missouri lost a game. But Auburns loss came against then No. 6 LSU. They lost 35-21 at Death Valley, the place that LSU coach Les Miles says is “where dreams go to die.” They lost in the rain, at night, in a stadium in which the home team is 34-and-2 since 2009. Missouri lost to No. 8 South Carolina. In double overtime, when kicker Andrew Baggett banged a 24-yard field goal off the uprights. Hardly a blemish to throw away a season on. The Buckeyes played five road games en route to their 12-and-0 season. Those road opponents? A combined 5-and-36 in conference play. Ohio State won “the game” last week beating archrival Michigan – a team that had lost three of their last four - on a failed 2-point conversion. The Wolverines scored 41 points in the loss, despite scoring 49 total points in regulation in all of November. The Buckeyes two wins against ranked teams came against No. 21 Wisconsin, the same team that as a 24-point favourite lost to Penn State this past weekend, the largest FBS vs FBS upset this season. The following week OSU beat then No. 16 Northwestern, the beginning of the Wildcats seven game losing streak, and a 1-and-7 finish in conference play. When the Buckeyes meet Michigan State in Indianapolis, it will be their first regular season game against a top-10 team since 2009. Auburn has played three. This season. This week, Meyer has understandably changed his tone. Hes lobbying for the Buckeyes, and a chance for the Big Ten to win a national title for the first time since 2002. But, like he said in 2006, “its called winning and losing, and playing a difficult schedule.” And there is no schedule more difficult than that of the SEC. CARSON, Calif. Adrian Clayborn Jersey . - The Vancouver Whitecaps had never won a Major League Soccer road game. Jay DeMerit had never scored an MLS goal. Sitting atop the standings more than one game into the schedule? Unheard of. That all changed on Saturday. It was a night of firsts for the Whitecaps, who used impeccable defending, a smart game plan and a terrific set-piece goal from DeMerit to pull out a 1-0 triumph over Chivas USA. The sense of relief at getting the first away win in franchise history was clear for the Whitecaps, who went 0-12-5 on the road in their inaugural season. "Its a huge monkey off our back," said DeMerit, who scored on a 68th-minute header from Camilos corner kick. “A lots been said about that in our preseason and the lead-up to this first away game. To get it out of the way right away is such a good thing for us as a group so we can just concentrate again on what our job is week in and week out. “We dont have that pressure on us anymore, and now we can go away from home and try to get clean sheets and wins.” Vancouver was superb defensively, sitting back and absorbing, never letting Chivas turn its superior possession into chances. Goalkeeper Joe Cannon came up with one big save — stretching to tip a 20-yard shot by rookie Casey Townsend over the crossbar — before departing just before halftime with a bruised quadriceps in his left leg. Brad Knighton came on, solved some tricky situations near the end, and Vancouver accomplished another first: back-to-back shutouts. "Those things are all pleasing and important to the team," Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie said. "Its up to us to make our own record and to build a winning environment, like weve always talked about, and this is only a first or second step along the way. But its three points, and three points builds confidence, winning on the road builds unity. You cant get that without hard work, and thats what the guys have given us tonight." The match, played in front of a rain-soaked Home Depot Center crowd announced as just 7,723, offered some decent play but few chances. Vancouver put just two shots on target — the first a left-footed Lee Young-Pyo drive that Goats goalkeeper Dan Kennedy parried just before DeMerits goal — and struggled to get Eric Hassli and especially Sebastien Le Toux involved. Chivas, which conceded a stoppage-time goal to lose their opener last weekend at home against Houston, was superb defensively. Its organization limited the Whitecaps penetration and individual efforts, erasing opportunities when the Whitecaps did get into the box. "Its just disappointing," said Chivas left back Ante Jazic, a Canadian international from Halifax. "I think Vancouver was certainly beatable. What did they have, one shot on net aside from the goal, and from distance? If you give up one shot on goal, you should win the game. … Give credit to Vancouver. They definitely battled. But I though they were there to be taken tonight, for sure." The game changed with an extended attack in the 67th minute. After Kennedy knocked down Lees shot, Le Toux collected the rebound and played it back to Lee, whose chip nearly found Hassli in the goalmouth. James Riley headed it out for a corner kick, and Chivas midfielder Oswaldo Minda slipped as Camilos ball sailed into the middle. DeMerits powerful header bounced into the net. "Im so happy for the guys," said Cannon, who likely will be out a week or so. "Once Jay put that in, I think everyone knew what we were going to do for the rest of the game: just bunker in and force them to play wide and try to get another on on the counter." The Whitecaps escaped a late possible penalty kick after Alain Rochat wrestled Nick LaBrocca to the ground, and a Minda header that skipped past the right post in stoppage time. “Its nice to win any game, and obviously its great to win on the road at any time,” said Rennie, whose team is even on six points with Real Salt Lake atop the Western Conference. "I think its probably got more significance for us just because in the past in MLS the Whitecaps havent won on the road. Theres thing we can always improve upon, but it was a professional performance, a very hard-working performance, and its always nice to win.” Deion Jones Falcons Jersey . Coach Jose Pekerman has until June 2 to name the final 23-man squad. Falcao has been sidelined since January. If he recovers in time -- surgeons initially gave him a 50-50 chance -- Colombia could be one of the real threats in the World Cup. Viewers in the Jets region can catch the game on TSN3 beginning at 6pm ct. You can also listen to the action on TSN Radio 1290. Kane, who has been sidelined since spraining his right knee in the season opener, was cleared for action after Thursdays morning skate. Kane had 19 goals and 41 points for the Jets last season and is a former 30-goal scorer. The Jets began the season with a win at Arizona before dropping their next four in regulation. Paul Maurices club has rebounded nicely, however, picking up victories in three of its next four and Winnipeg enters tonights test riding a two-game win streak. Winnipeg ended a five-game homestand with Sundays overtime win against Colorado, then kicked off a stretch of four straight on the road with Tuesdays 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders. Andrew Ladd scored twice, including the go-ahead goal early in the third period, to help the Jets outlast the Isles at Nassau Coliseum. Paul Postma and Jacob Trouba also lit the lamp for Winnipeg and Ondrej Pavelec stopped 18- of-21 shots for the win. Ladd broke a 3-3 tie at the 3:31 mark of the third period. Bryan Littles shot from the top of the right circle hit off the pads of Jaroslav Halak, leaving a rebound for Ladd. The Islanders went on the power play when Postma was called for holding with 4:04 remaining. But Pavelec held strong in net to preserve the victory for Winnipeg. It was not our greatest start but we had a strong finish, Ladd said. The Jets played Tuesday without Zach Bogosian and the defenceman is questionable for tonights tilt with an upper-body injury. New Jersey has been the opposite of the Jets so far in 2014-14, starting the season strong before falling on hard times. The Devils began the campaign on a three-game winning streak, but have lost five of their six outings since. Thee Devils, who are 1-3-2 over their last six, surrendered a season-high eight goals their last time out, losing 8-3 in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Sean Weatherspoon Falcons Jersey. New Jersey scored the first goal Tuesday and actually held a 3-1 over the Penguins until things fell apart. Pittsburgh tallied seven unanswered goals, ending the second period with a 5-3 lead before pulling away even further in the third. Dainius Zubrus, Tuomo Ruutu and Jacob Josefson all scored for the Devils. Cory Schneider gave up five goals on 23 shots over the first two periods before being pulled. Scott Clemmensen gave up three goals on 10 shots through the final 20 minutes of play. It was ugly and got away from us in the second half of the game, said Schneider. You have to learn from your mistakes, but this is also one that you just want to put behind you and move on to the next one. The Devils aim to turn things around at home, where the club will play three straight beginning with tonights tilt, but the club is 0-1-2 at the Prudential Center so far this season. Jersey hopes to have Mike Cammalleri back tonight after the veteran winger missed Tuesdays game with an upper-body injury. Cammalleri is leading the Devils with five goals and is tied for second on the club with seven points. Winnipeg has won four of five meetings versus the Devils overall and has claimed two of the last three in the Garden State. Pavelec expects to start tonight and is 6-3-3 with a 2.16 goals against average in his career against the Devils. Schneider is 1-1-0 with a 2.02 GAA in two lifetime appearances versus the Jets. MINNEAPOLIS -- The Detroit Tigers had Kevin Correia on the ropes in the second inning but missed their first chance to knock him out. Womens Mel Blount Jersey . They didnt miss their second. Torii Hunter had two hits and two RBIs in the Tigers seven-run third inning that propelled them to a 10-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. "We just got pitches that we could drive," said Hunter, who doubled twice among his three hits. "He left some balls up where we could capitalize on them. This guy pitches really well against us. We dont score many runs off him. But tonight we felt good at the plate and I think we were a little patient today and got some pitches we could handle." Nick Castellanos had a home run and three RBIs to back Rick Porcello (3-1), who gave up four runs and six hits with four strikeouts in five-plus innings for the Tigers. Rajai Davis added three hits to raise his average to .354. Correia (0-3) gave up eight runs -- seven earned -- and eight hits in 2 1-3 innings for Minnesota. It was his shortest outing since going just two innings last Aug. 5 against the Royals. Chris Colabello drove in his 27th run for the Twins, setting a franchise record for RBIs in April. Jason Kubel had two doubles among his three hits for the Twins. Brian Dozier hit his seventh homer of the season and Kurt Suzuki drove in two runs, giving him 19 RBIs on the year, which leads all catchers. Correia served up a two-run homer to Castellanos in the second -- and probably only got through that inning thanks to a poor decision by third base coach Dave Clark to send slow-footed Alex Avila from first base on a double by Andrew Romine. Avila was thrown out at home and Ian Kinsler grounded out to short-circuit the rally. "I was missing from the get-go," Correia said. "Balls were just kind of running back over the middle. I got away with it for an inning or so and then it caught up to me." But the Tigers had more in store for Correia. Hunter led off the third with a double and, after Miguel Cabreras groundout, the next five batters reached base with three hits and two walks, the last one from Romine with the bases loaded to make it 5-1. Hunter added a two-run single off Anthony Swarzak later in the inning that pushed the lead to 9-1. "They teach that in baseball: The most important inning is the inning after your team scores," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "We were able to bounce back and score not just a few but seven." There are no statements delivered in April, but the Tigers did throw a little cold water on what has been a surprising start to the season for the Twins. Minnesota has lost at least 96 games in each of the past three years, but rode the second-highest scoring offence in the American League to an 11-10 start that put the Twins right on heavily favoured Detroits heels in the AL Central. "Its something positive you can build off of and thats what were going to do, try to carry it over to the next day," Hunter said. "Usually when you get a loss, as a human being you kind of think about that negative and it can carry over and linger. But since we won and its positive, just try to build off it." After breezing through the first five innings, Porcello didnt get an out in the sixth before being lifted for Justin Miller. Ausmus had to use five more pitchers to finish the game, but that big third inning gave his team plenty of cushion to absorb a four-run sixth by the Twins. The Maple Leafs go for a fifth straight win while attempting to snap a four-game home slide against the Kings at Air Canada Centre on Sunday. Toronto (17-9-3) is 8-1-1 since a 9-2 loss to Nashville on Nov. 18, outscoring the opposition 40-22 in that span and by a 14-5 margin during its four-game winning streak. The Maple Leafs havent put together a longer streak since a six-game run Jan. 12-21. They moved closer to matching that streak Saturday, scoring four unanswered goals in a 4-1 win over Detroit to earn a sweep of a home-and-home set against their Atlantic Division and Original Six rival. We were more energetic, coach Randy Carlyle said. James van Riemsdyk scored against the Red Wings to give him 10 points in the last 10 games. The left wing has collected two goals and as many assists in the past three, and he has five points in six career meetings with Los Angeles (15-10-5). The Maple Leafs, however, have lost four straight against the Kings in Toronto since their last home victory in the series on Nov. 12, 2002. Jonathan Bernier may get a chance to end the slide against his former team after James Reimer tweaked his groin in practice ahead of Saturdays expected start. Bernier stepped in with 27 saves and is 7-1-1 with a 2.34 goals-against average in nine games. Hes also stopped 59 of 61 shots in his last two starts. Bernier suffered a groin injury of his own aat Los Angeles on March 13, stopping eight of 10 shots before Reimer made all 31 stops in the final two periods of a 3-2 victory. David DeCastro Jersey. Bernier was beaten twice in the third period of a 3-1 loss to the Kings in the most recent home meeting on Dec. 11, 2013. The Kings would like a similar performance as they try to solve their poor play in front of the night. Theyve been outscored 12-8 during a 1-3-0 stretch, but that includes Thursdays 5-3 win at Ottawa. Los Angeles followed that up a day later with another frustrating offensive display in a 6-2 loss at Montreal. The Kings finished with a 46-20 shot advantage, dominating the first period at 14-4 only to trail 1-0. We had the puck a lot and we created a lot, but no goals at the end of it, said defenseman Jake Muzzin, who scored on one of his six shots after getting three assists against the Senators. You need goals to win. I thought we battled back and stuck with it and continued trying to fight and get some more goals. It just wasnt happening. Getting production from Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter would surely help after they led the team with 29 and 27 goals, respectively, last season. Theyve combined for 13 this season, and Carter hasnt found the net for 13 straight games. Kopitar isnt much better with one goal in 12 contests, and both failed to get on the score sheet against the Canadiens while combining for a minus-5 rating. Kopitar, though, had a goal against the Maple Leafs on March 13, while Carter netted one and assisted on another at Toronto last Dec. 11. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Vernon Wells and the Los Angeles Angels showed AL West-leading Texas that they can slug the ball too. Keenan Lewis Saints Jersey . Wells hit the first of the Angels five solo homers -- four off starter C.J. Wilson -- and had an RBI triple as the Angels won 8-4 on Saturday night with Ervin Santana pitching on short rest. "We drove the ball out of the park today against a guy whos really been tough on us," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He usually has the ball down in the zone, but he had the ball up a little bit and we took advantage and swung the bats well." After losing the opener 11-7, the Angels got even in their last series this season at Rangers Ballpark and cut the division gap to two games. The finale is Sunday night, then the AL West front-runners dont play again until the final three games of the regular season on the West Coast. "Its still too early to focus on how many games youre up or back," Scioscia said. "We have a lot of baseball left after this series. But its important for us to win games. The fact that we won a game against a team were trying to catch, sure, that helps but theres a long road ahead of us." Mike Trout and Bobby Wilson, the last two hitters in the lineup, both went deep in the fourth off Wilson (13-6), who had never given up more than two homers in a game. Peter Bourjos also homered off the Texas starter. Santana (10-9) pitched with only three days rest for the first time in his career, and gave up four runs and four hits over seven innings. The right-hander struck out two, walked one, hit two batters and threw two wild pitches. "Theres always a first time for everything. I was prepared and kept focused. It was hot, but I just focused on doing my thing," Santana said. "I was 100 per cent positive and trusted my stuff." David Murphy homered for the Rangers (75-59), who have lost seven of 10 while their division lead dwindled from seven games over the Angels (72-60). After Texas loaded the bases with one out in the ninth off Jordan Walden, Hisanori Takahaski got his second save in five chances when he induced Murphy into a game-ending double play. Wilson had allowed only two homers over his previous 15 starts since May 31. After going 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA his previous four August starts allowing only four earned runs, the left-hander gave up six runs and 10 hits in five innings against the Angels. "The home run was working, the problem is I was the one giving them up," Wilson said. "I feel like its kind of a weird thing. I dont even really know what to think about that. I just, I was aiming down and the ball was going up. Thats what happens sometimes." Howie Kendrick greeted Koji Uehara, the second Texas reliever, with a leadoff homer in the seventh. The five homers matched the season high for Los Angeles. Wells put the Angels ahead to stay in the second when his 18th homer made it 1-0. He finished 2 for 4 after an RBI triple in the seventh, and is 9 for 17 his last five games. "Ive made some adjustments, a few changes, and Ive been able to be a little more aggressive. Im in a more balanced position," Wells said. "Weve got to get this thing together to win enough ball games to be in it in October." Torii Hunter had an RBI single in the third before the back-to-back homers in the fourth -- the third for Trout, the youngest player in the majors at 20 years old and 20 days, and the first for Bobby Wilson in his 43 games this season. After Bourjos hit his ninth homer to start the fifth, Kendrick singled and eventually scored on a single by Erick Aybar. Wells made the final out of the inning when he ran from second and started to go home on Trouts infield single. Shortstop Elvis Andrus threw to catcher Mike Napoli, who ran down Wells and tagged him as both fell down facedown, side-by-side near third base. Before they got up, Wells reached over and patted his former teammate on the back. Santana hit Napoli on the left wrist with a pitch in the sixth. Napoli twisted back and fell to his knees in obvious pain, but stayed in the game. Ian Kinsler got hit by a pitch leading off the fourth before Andrus drew a walk. Michael Young had a sacrifice fly and Napoli an RBI single. Nelson Cruz had a leadoff single in the fifth before Murphys seventh homer. Murphy hit a grand slam Friday to help the Rangers jump out to an 11-0 lead. Notes: It was the fourth homer in five games for Kendrick, who has 13 this season. ... The ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by the teenage son of a Dallas firefighter who died after falling through the roof of a burning structure. Christian band Mercy Me, which also did a pre-game concert, wore Dallas Fire Department T-shirts while singing the National Anthem. ... Still, Milan remained five points behind city rival Inter Milan in the race for fifth place and the final Europa League berth, after Inter beat 10-man Parma 2-0. Meanwhile, Paul Pogba led the way as Juventus stayed on course for a third consecutive title with a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Bologna. Pogba, the France international and former Manchester United midfielder, scored with a long, low shot from beyond the area in the 64th minute. Juve remained eight points ahead of second-place Roma, which won 1-0 at fourth-place Fiorentina with a 26th-minute goal from Radja Nainggolan. Former Fiorentina forward Adem Ljajic set up the goal by evading a bunch of defenders and slipping the ball through to Nainggolan. With 90 points and four matches remaining, Juventus has a chance to become the first Serie A club to break the 100-point barrier. Inter set the record of 97 in 2007. Serie A began awarding three points for wins in the 1994-95 season and the current 20-club format was instituted in 2003-04. Roma secured second place and a direct Champions League berth. At the San Siro, Balotelli scored with a textbook header from the centre of the area in the 43rd following a cross from Kevin Constant. Midfielder Adel Taarabt doubled Milans lead in the 51st after dribbling past a defender, and substitute Giampaolo Pazzini finished off in the 84th after taking a pass from Balotelli that left him with only the goalkeeper to beat. Balotellis previous best output was 13 goals, with Manchester City in 2011-12, and City and Milaan combined last season. Womens Vonn Bell Jersey. "Hes improving and maturing mentally and that permits him to do better on and off the pitch," new Milan coach Clarence Seedorf said. It was also Balotellis 18th goal in all competitions this season, another personal record, which should give the striker confidence entering the World Cup as Italys leader in attack. "Im happy to have reached the record but I have to improve, because there are players that score 40 in a season," said Balotelli, who did not celebrate after his goal. The win was also a relief for Seedorf, amid reports his job was at risk. "I didnt know anything about that," Balotelli said. "The coach has given a big hand to the squad. ... But this is still nothing. Its just a great result. Were playing to qualify for the Europa League." After the loss, relegation-threatened Livorno fired Domenico Di Carlo and rehired Davide Nicola as manager. Elsewhere, third-place Napoli was held to 1-1 at Udinese, while Torino and Lazio remained level eighth after a wild 3-3 draw that saw Ciro Immobile score his league-leading 20th goal. Also, it was: Atalanta 1, Hellas Verona 2; Catania 2, Sampdoria 1; Chievo Verona 0, Sassuolo 1; and Genoa 1, Cagliari 2. In Parma, Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic stopped a penalty from Antonio Cassano by tipping it off the post in the 44th. The hosts were then reduced to 10 men when Italy international Gabriel Paletta picked up his second yellow card in first half added time for a foul on Rodrigo Palacio. Defender Rolando put Inter ahead in the 48th with a header, and substitute Fredy Guarin sealed the victory by scoring on his first touch in the 89th from beyond the area. RIVERSIDE, Calif. Roger Craig Jersey . -- Former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington is off to the real world penalty box -- prison. A judge in Riverside, Calif., sentenced the 71-year-old on Friday to six months behind bars for violating a term of his probation on a perjury conviction. "Onward and upward," Pocklington said in a news release. "Those who know me also know that throughout my life, I have encountered and successfully overcome much adversity. I do so again now, grateful for the expressions of support I have received from my family, friends and associates. Adversity is a great teacher and makes those who strive to overcome it better people." The colourful Canadian business tycoon, who earned millions in everything from hockey to hogs only to face mountains of debt and the wrath of Albertans, has been dogged by controversy and legal problems for decades. But this will marks the first time hell be sent to prison. U.S. assistant attorney Tony Raphael said Pocklington must surrender to U.S. prison authorities on Dec. 9. Its not yet know which facility hell be sent to. Judge Virginia Phillips granted the delay so Pocklington can travel to Florida for surgery in November, said the prosecutor. Court documents show he has eye and colon problems, but Raphael wasnt clear what the surgery is for. Other than the hospital trip, Pocklington must remain in the central district of California. He will likely be fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet on Monday, Raphael said. Pocklington will also be under two years of supervised release, including six months of house arrest, when he gets out of prison. "Obviously, this is not a development I welcome, but I accept full responsibility for my actions," said Pocklington. "I will willingly comply with each and every condition of my supervised release." The prosecutor recommended Pocklington serve a nine-year sentence. Defence lawyer Brent Romney asked the judge to spare his client from prison so he could care for his ailing wife, Eva, who recently suffered heart failure and received a pacemaker. The defence also submitted as evidence several letters from high school students, sent to Pocklington after he spoke to their health class about "positive self esteem." Raphael said the letters backfired. "The judge felt that actually that kind of cut against him," he said. "Her comment was the letters showed the defendant went out and talked to the kids about how he became successful and wealthy. But really, she felt he should have talked to them about how he got in trouble with the law and also had been convicted of a crime." Several students wrote about how they wanted to be successful like Pocklington. They were inspired when they told them he was 13 when he decided he was going to be rich and 20 when he made his first million. "When people hated you and said things to you, you never gave up," wrote one teen. "I wanna thank you for opening my eyes and showing me how to never quit and make the right choices." Court heard earlier this week that Pocklington had submitted a false monthly income report to his probation officer. Raphael said Pocklington didnt adequately disclose a $15,000 consulting fee he received in January 2012. In 2010, the Canadian businessman was sentenced to six months of house arrest and two years probation for perjury. He pleaded guilty to the charge and admitted to lying during previous bankruptcy proceedings. In exchange, charges of bankruptcy fraud were dropped. Pocklington filed a bankruptcy claim in 2008 stating he was virtually penniless and owed almost $US20 million. The FBI arrested him at his home in Palm Desert, near Palm Springs, the following year. In previous court documents, investigators said they believed Pocklington was associated with off-shore companies registered in the Bahamas. In the end, Pocklington admitted in court that he had declared bankruptcy without disclosing that he had control over bank accounts and storage facilities containing assets and property of his wife. A lawyer representing several creditors still looking for Pocklington to pay up was also in court Friday. Raphael said the judge gave the creditors permission to file a motion asking that financial records entered into the hearing be unsealed. Pocklingtons creditors include the Alberta government, which loaned the businessman money to prop up his Gainers meat-packing company and other failed enterprises. A Canadian court earlier ruled that Pocklington owes the province $13 million. In May, Pocklington and an associate settled a securities fraud case in Arizona and were ordered to pay more than US$5 million. Pocklington is most famous for bringing Wayne Gretzky to Edmonton in 1978, then trading the superstar player a decade later to the Los Angeles Kings. Livid hockey fans burned the owner in effigy outside the citys arena. Mired in debt, Pocklington later sold the team to a consortium of local buyers and headed for California. Custom 49ers Jersey . Its been an eventful 12 months for the Toronto Raptors. The team got nailed by injuries to start last season and ended up dropping 19 of their first 23 games. Then another injury actually turned things around. Andrea Bargnani went down with an elbow injury and the Raptors won eight of their next 10. Next came a major in season trade as the Raptors sent much loved point guard Jose Calderon and young big man Ed Davis to Memphis in exchange for Rudy Gay. Gay instantly became the go-to guy in Toronto and the Raptors actually went .500 (18-1 after the trade to finish the season 34-48 and tied for ninth in the East. The in-season changes were nothing compared to what has happened since though. Off-season of change When Tim Leiweke was hired as the new president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment it didnt take long to realize that he was brining sweeping changes with him. For the Raptors it meant saying goodbye to Bryan Colangelo, the man who had led the team for the past seven seasons, the last five of which involved missing the playoffs. The Raptors lured up and coming executive Masai Ujiri away from the Denver Nuggets to take over from Colangelo as GM. Its fitting that the first major move made by Ujiri was to ship Bargnani, whom Colangelo selected first overall in 2006 and failed to build the team around, off to New York. And not only was Ujiri able to move Bargnani and his bloated contract, he actually got something in return. THe Raptors received Marcus Camby, Steve Novak and Quentin Richardson in the deal as well as a 2016 frist round draft pick and two future second round picks. The team waived Camby and Richardson, but Novak gives the Raptors some much needed three-point shooting and the draft picks will be najor assets as the Raptors look to rebuild. The Raptors also amnestied Linas Kleiza while adding Tyler Hansbrough, Austin Daye and D.J. Augustin to the fold for this season. The team certainly isnt ready to be considered a contender just yet, but its a brand new era in Toronto. And with Ujiri at the helm, the future looks bright. The Good The Raptors have turned the page on the Bryan Colangelo-Andrea Bargnani. The Raptors future is in far better hands with Masai Ujiri at the helm and building around Jonas Valanciunas. Toronto actually has a pretty strong starting lineup with Valanciunas flanked by Amir Johnson and Rudy Gay in the frontcourt along with DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry in the backcourt. That lineup actually outscored opponents by 85 points in their 343 minutes together last season. Valanciunas especially looks to be a real bright spot for the Raptors and could be in line for a breakout season after dominating in summer league. A full training camp for Rudy Gay should also prove big for the Raptors. He led the team in scoring after joining them in Febbruary, averaging 19. Bradley Pinion 49ers Jersey. 5 points to go along with 6.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists. The team will look for him to be even better, and far more efficient, in his first full season in Toronto. DeMar DeRozan is another player that could be in line for a breakout year. His offensive game is continuing to develop and he is also improving on the defensive end. The team has the offensive firepower to compete night-in, night-out and could actually be in the running for a lower seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. And more importantly their future growth is in good hands with Ujiri who is widely regarded as a terrific talent evaluator. The Not So Good Dwane Casey emphasizes defence in his coaching, but the team actually struggled to stop opponents last season. Raptors opponents scored 104.7 points per 100 possessions last year, ranking the Raptors 22nd in the league in that category. Their starting five project to be a pretty stout unit, but Valanciunas, Lowry and Johnson all tend to be foul prone and the defensive depth behind them isnt great. Theyll need their starters to stay out of trouble if they want to keep opponent scoring down. Kyle Lowry is also proving to be a fairly injury prone player which could be problematic given the lack of point guard depth behind him. Luckily heavoided a more significant finger injury to his non-shooting hand in a presseason game against Memphis but will still have to wear a splint on the finger for the first six weeks of the season. He has averaged 13.5 games on the sidelines over the last four years though and neither Dwight Buycks, nor DJ Augustin looks capable of handling starters minutes. Another potential stumbling block for the season (not necessarily the long-term though) is the fact that Lowry and Gay are both in the final year of their respective contracts. Ujiri may decide may decide he wants to buld elsewhere and look to move one or both players. Any such move would drop the players out of playoff contention and into the lottery. In the long run that may not actually be a bad thing as the 2014 prospect pool is loaded and the Raptors are probabyl targeting 2016 for when they truly want to compete. What To Expect As long as the Raptors dont blow things up and trade Lowry, Gay or any other starter for future assets, this will be a team that is in the hunt for the playoffs. They should be flirting with the .500 mark all season long and if they get there it should be enough for a low playoff seed in the top-heavy Eastern Conference. They would soundly thumped in the first round by any of the top teams most likely, but for a fan base dying to get back into the playoffs, that might be enough for now. Of course, if Ujiri does decide to do some wheeling and dealing, the team would fall out of the playoff hunt and into the hunt for a high pick next year. Either way, there is reason for optimism in Toronto. Scott Kazmir threw six sharp innings before leaving with tightness in his left triceps, and Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer that broke a scoreless tie in the eighth that lifted the As over the Seattle Mariners 3-0 Sunday. Kazmir called it was "a very, very minor" injury. He said it wont cause him to miss a start, but the As have reason to be cautionary. This spring the club lost staff ace Jarrod Parker to season-ending elbow surgery and A.J. Griffin is sidelined for perhaps the first two months with a strained forearm. Oaklands staff has an AL-leading 2.17 ERA. "Its exciting to have guys follow up a quality start, one after another, one through five. It really is exciting," Kazmir said. "We just want to keep going out there and keep making quality pitches and quality outings, all of us." Kazmir pitched two-hit ball, striking out nine without a walk. As manager Melvin said that the first time he noticed Kazmir was affected by the tightness was at the end of the sixth. Kazmir had a similar issue during training camp, missing one start with triceps tightness. "Everything checked out as far as his strengthening and what he does after a game," Melvin said. "He wanted to go back out but you have to be careful with a guy like that." Mariners star Robinson Cano said Kazmir was exceptionally tough. "He was making guys chase his slider and throwing the heater at 95," Cano said. Cespedes pulled a 2-2 slider from Charlie Furbush (0-1) into the left-field bullpen. Cespedes second homer of the season came after Jed Lowrie drew a leadoff walk. Josh Donaldson added a solo home run in the ninth, his third, off Lucas Luetge. Dan Otero (2-0) retired two batters in the seventh. Luke Gregerson worked the eighth and Sean Doolittle allowed one hit in the ninth for his first save. Chris Young made his first start since Sept. 9, 2012, while with the New York Mets. Troubled by shoulder problems all last season, he went to spring camp this year with the Nationals, was released and signed during the last week of training camp by Seattle. Young pitched six shutout innnings, giving up four hits. Womens Blake Bortles Jersey. He walked three and struck out two. Youngs other outing for Seattle was a two-inning scoreless stint in relief. "I was really, really pleased with his outing," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He got a lot of flyball outs, teased them up in the zone a bit. I think he is close. I saw his breaking ball coming today. When that pitch comes for him, hes going to be pretty tough." Kazmir didnt allow a runner and struck out six the first time through the lineup. The Mariners got back-to-back, one-out singles by Brad Miller and Cano in the fourth, but Kazmir retired Corey Hart on a grounder and struck out Justin Smoak with a 78 mph changeup. The Mariners only other scoring threat came with two outs in the sixth when Brad Miller sent right fielder Eric Sogard to the wall to bring down his flyball. Cano, who singled in the fourth, has a 14-game hitting streak against Oakland dating to Sept. 22, 2012. NOTES: Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon isnt sure about Major League Baseballs expanded replay format. "Im really worried about where were heading with replays, the effect its having on the game, the effect its having on the fans," McClendon said. "Its confusing." McClendon is concerned about the outfield transfer rule, when umpires look to be sure fielders successfully switch the ball from the glove to their hands. The Mariners already have had three such plays this season, with mixed results. "It was made for the play at second, on the double-play ball," Melvin said. "I dont think anyone thought it would come into play in the outfield as youre seeing right now." Both managers have had to talk to their players to be certain that runners go against their instincts and watch the umpires, not the play, in order to advance or hold. "I think the players are struggling more than the managers," McClendon said. "Initially, I thought Id be a fan of it. But Im not so sure now." ... Mariners top pitching prospect Taijuan Walker (shoulder) is scheduled to make another rehab start Tuesday in the minors. Seattle has an open spot in the rotation for that day, but McClendon said he doesnt know when Walker will be called up.
