ATLANTA -- Blake Sims was good enough to finish his first start at quarterback for Alabama, getting plenty of help from Amari Cooper, T. Josh Kline Patriots Jersey .J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry, and the second-ranked Crimson Tide held off West Virginia 33-23 Saturday. Sims was 24-for-33 for 250 yards and added 42 running, playing the entire opener at the Georgia Dome. The fifth-year senior beat out Florida State transfer Jake Coker for the start. Tide coach Nick Saban had suggested both quarterbacks would play, but Sims never came out. Yeldon (126 yards rushing and two touchdowns), Henry (113 yards rushing and a score) and Cooper (12 catches for 130 yards) provided plenty of support. Alabama needed all the offence it could get because West Virginia found plenty of soft spots in the Tides D. The Mountaineers up-tempo spread gave Clint Trickett his pick of open receivers, and he took advantage with 365 yards passing. But West Virginia didnt take full advantage, dropping more than a half-dozen catchable pass, including one off the hands of Elijah Wellman near the goal line that would have been a sure TD early in the fourth quarter. Coming off a 4-8 season, West Virginia was a 26 1/2-point underdog. The Mountaineers seemed like nothing more than the backdrop to Alabamas continued quarterback competition. They didnt play that way. Mario Alford returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score with 1:43 left in the first half to tie the game at 17-17. Henry scored the only touchdown of the second half on a 19-yard run midway through the third quarter to put Alabama up 27-17. It was all field goals from there. Coker warmed up briefly on the sideline in the first half, but that was it. Jameis Winstons backup last season spent a good amount of time sitting on the bench next to Sims, talking to the starter. Coker came to Alabama as a graduate transfer, immediately eligible and the presumptive replacement for AJ McCarron. Coker and McCarron even went to the same high school, St. Pauls in Mobile, Alabama. There are no presumptions with Saban, though, and he tried to put an end to all that during the summer, making it clear that nothing was guaranteed to the 6-foot-5, 230-pound junior. Throughout camp Saban would only say that both quarterbacks were progressing, heaping praise on Sims, while not slighting Coker. Saban has another Tide team ready to roll. Alabama is loaded with playmakers on offence. The biggest question in the preseason was who would be behind centre, but it sure looked as if a defence that struggled at times last year against spread offences could be a problem again for the Tide. New Tide offensive co-ordinator, and former Southern California coach, Lane Kiffin gave Sims some short, quick passes in his first series. Sims completed his first three throws, all toward the sideline and helped Alabama drive to the West Virginia 30. On third-and-4, Sims had Cooper open short over the middle and fired too low for the star receiver to grab. Adam Griffith kicked a 47-yard field goal to tie the game at 3. Griffith kicked four field goals from 47, 41, 27 and 45. No matter who plays quarterback for Alabama, hell have a treasure trove of talent with which to work. Sims only had to complete three passes on a 14-play, 95-yard touchdown drive that Yeldon finished with a 15-yard run, diving into the end zone for a 10-3 lead. That drive took 6:57. Trickett responded with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kevin White, who went high over Bradley Sylve in the corner of the end zone. That 75-yard drive took 2:13 and tied it at 10-10. Alabama slowly drove to another Yeldon touchdown, this one from a yard out with 1:54 left in the half. West Virginia responded quickly -- even faster this time. Alford sidestepped one tackler and flashed some Big 12 speed, outrunning the Tide to the end zone to tie the game at 17. Bama came right back and regained the lead when Griffith kicked a 41-yarder as time expired on a half that left Saban calling his defence "soft" during his TV interview. He said he will be ready when that time arrives. "Its my responsibility to find the best place for him to utilize his skills and passion for the game," Fox said. If the Panthers release Smith he will count $5 million under this years cap. The Panthers could designate him for a June 1 release which would allow them to split that money over the next two seasons. General manager Jon Daniels said he expected a second opinion to confirm the initial recommendation for the operation. It is the first time the durable first baseman has been on the DL in his career. Before a nerve root block injection to treat his neck last Saturday, Fielders 547 consecutive games played was the longest active streak in the majors. Fielder, who turned 30 earlier this month, missed only one game the previous five seasons and hadnt missed a game since Sept. 14, 2010. Fielder went on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 17. Infielder Donnie Murphy was recalled from an injury rehab assignment and activated for the game against the Tigers. Mitch Moreland was set to start at first base, where he played last year before the trade for Fielder pushed him toward the designated hitter role. "A big blow for us as a team, losing him in the middle of the lineup," Moreland said. "But weve been dealing with adversity all year." Moreland hit 23 home runs last season. The Flyers and Rangers have been divisional rivals for decades, but this series marks the first playoff meeting between the clubs since 1997 when Philadelphia downed New York in five games for the Eastern Conference title. Overall, Philadelphia has won six of the 10 playoff series between the franchises and has claimed three straight and four of the past five encounters. The Flyers and Rangers split four meetings in 2013-14, with each team winning twice at its home arena. New Yorks home-ice advantage could loom large in this series, as the Blueshirts have claimed eight in a row at home against the Flyers, who last won at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 20, 2011. South African police said the investigation into Pistorius shooting of Steenkamp was "at an advanced stage," but declined to give further details, saying they "cannot be drawn into discussing the merits of the case." Prosecutors have said police will conclude their investigations by August and continue to probe the circumstances of Pistorius pre-dawn killing of Steenkamp, whom he shot multiple times through a toilet cubicle door. In the last few months, the 26-year-old Pistorius has lost weight -- about 10-12 kilograms -- and spends much of his time doing household chores at the Pretoria home of his uncle as he awaits his murder trial, Van Zyl said. Pistorius looked much leaner in the video footage than he was at the London Olympics and Paralympics last year. "His family and those close to him have encouraged him to spend a few hours a week on the track to assist him in finding the necessary mental and emotional equilibrium to process his trauma and prepare for the trial." Thursdays visit was the second time Pistorius has been seen on the university track since he killed Steenkamp. A March sighting spurred speculation he was back in training, which was denied by his family, who described him then as being in "an extremely traumatized state" and not willing to contemplate training at that time. Then, Pistorius was photographed by a schoolgirl on a cellphone while he was walking on the track, but he made that visit without the knowledge of anyone else, his agent said, and waited for a group of athletes he took to the track to leave before he put on his blades and just walked around. His new routine will involve around three to four sessions a week and be run by Louw, Pistorius longtime coach and the man who introduced him to athletics when Pistorius was a teenager and still at school. The Jays have brought him along carefully this spring but with the regular season looming, Morrow is running out of time to build up to go deeper into games. Morrow is included in that bunch. The plan is for Morrow to pitch four or five innings against the Yankees Scranton affiliate on Tuesday in Tampa.
