"Weve been able to ride some of the peaks and valleys here," Farrell said, "but theres a number of guys that are relaxed in the (batters) box right now." Cleveland is on its own streak, losing four straight. Justin Masterson (4-5) had his shortest stint of the season -- two innings plus two walks in the third -- 11 days after he had a season-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings against Boston and beat Lackey 3-2. He walked the first two batters in the second. "I walked two guys on like eight pitches," Masterson said. "Its 3-3 at the time and its still a ball game. (Manager Terry Francona) doesnt see any positive adjustment coming out of me. Why wouldnt he take me out?" With a light rain falling, Lackey struggled early when he allowed three runs and six hits in three innings. "I heard some places have summer," Lackey joked. "Thats the rumour." But he gave up just one hit in his next 3 2-3 scoreless innings before being replaced by Andrew Miller. The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the second on Carlos Santanas eighth homer after a single by David Murphy. "Hes starting to take some more aggressive swings and stay in the middle of the field," Francona said of Santana, who began the night hitting .175. "If he gets hot, that will be great for us." "I thought he was going to pass away, I was going to die, I was going to leave his kids behind and his family," said Cabrera through third base coach Luis Rivera, translating Spanish to English. "I know one day hes going to die but I wasnt ready to do that yet." It was a harsh dose of reality for Cabrera not long after turning 29 last August 11. It was a strange time. Finally, Cabrera had a proper diagnosis for the knee tendinitis and quadriceps inflammation that had sent him to the disabled list earlier in the season. But to that point, Cabrera couldnt understand why hed been rendered relatively immobile on the field. The tumour, which if left untreated would have continued to grow and could have ended up wrapping itself around Cabreras spinal cord causing paralysis, even death, was about the size of a walnut at the time it was surgically removed. The scar on Cabreras back is about five inches long and runs straight down the spinal column. "I was worried because of the way I was playing and the pain I was feeling in my legs and his back," Cabrera said through Rivera. "I didnt know what was wrong with me until I they decided to check. I found out, my family and myself, it was a tumour. They didnt know if it was benign or cancer and we were real worried." Once the stiches came out ten days after the surgery, Cabrera immediately began working out. He started slowly, capped at curls with 15 and 20-pound dumbbells. By December, Cabrera had moved his offseason home to Tampa. The Giants confirmed Friday that they gave the 67-year-old Coughlin a one-year extension, putting him under contract through the 2015 season. The agreement had been expected since the franchise has a history of not allowing its head coach go into a season as a lame duck. "The Giants have always done that," Coughlin told reporters at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. "That was always indicated to me. I didnt pay a whole lot of attention to it to be honest with you. Weve had a lot of work going on in our business and our building, as you know. So I had great confidence that it would happen, and it did." Coughlin said that his agent and the Giants never talked about getting a longer contract, which is not surprising. The Giants have missed the playoffs the past two seasons and three of four. However, his Super Bowl titles in 2008 and 12 earned him at least another season. Coughlin and the Giants had wanted to get the deal done earlier, but it was delayed while Coughlin reshaped his offensive staff. Coordinator Kevin Gilbride retired after the Giants (7-9) missed the playoffs and two other longtime assistants, running backs coach Jerald Ingram and tight ends coach Mike Pope, were fired. Coughlin also reassigned quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan and receivers coach Kevin M. Gilbride, with Ryan taking over the receivers and the younger Gilbride moving to tight ends. For now, Joe Girardi and the rest of the New York Yankees are just thankful they have the Japanese right-hander pitching like one of the best in baseball. "Hes been really, really big. You look at the numbers hes put up, the wins that he has, the distances hes given us during the course of the season," Girardi said. "Hes meant a lot." Tanaka added another notch to his stellar first two months in the majors, striking out 11 and tossing a complete game Wednesday night as the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2. "Obviously I wasnt very happy about that home run, but at the end Im pretty satisfied I was able to go all nine innings tonight," Tanaka said through a translator. Tanaka allowed six hits, walked one and leads the AL with a 2.02 ERA. He tied for the wins lead with Torontos Mark Buehrle, who is 10-2. Tanaka has allowed only four earned runs in the past 29 2-3 innings and hasnt given up more than three earned runs in any start. That number would be less if not for Cano hitting his third homer of the season -- and first at Safeco Field -- in the ninth. James Jones reached on an infield single with one out and Cano hit a drive out to left-centre on the first pitch. "He was dealing. He was the same guy you see on TV," Cano said. "He put the ball where he wants. Hes filthy." Tanaka cruised from the start. It took the Japanese rookie 15 pitches to get through the first two innings and 26 pitches setting down the first nine Mariners in order. Seattle got baserunners in the fourth when Jones and Seager singled, but the threat ended when Morrison struck out on a check swing. It also started a strikeout binge from Tanaka. Beginning with Morrison, six of the next seven outs came via strikeout.
