FRISCO, Texas - Fabian Castillo, Je-Vaughn Watson and Michel scored in a 15-minute span of the second half Saturday night to keep FC Dallas unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over Chivas USA. Gary Payton Thunder Jersey . Dallas (2-0-1) sits atop the Western Conference with an MLS-best seven points. Castillo opened the scoring in the 71st minute off a Mauro Diaz set piece, and Watson outran defender Tony Lochhead on a long ball and then juked goalkeeper Ian Kennedy for the eventual game-winner in the 78th minute. "We have a good team," Watson said. "The guys are running really hard. To get three goals so fast was like a reward because we had them on the back foot from the get-go of the game. I think the guys came out in the second half and decided we were going to go for the kill." Chivas forward Erick Torres grabbed his third goal of the season in the 81st minute to put the pressure back on the hosts, but Michel, a second-half substitute, slotted in a low, left-footed free kick in the 86th and Chivas (1-1-1) lost for the first time this season. Each team had 10 shots, but Dallas had nearly 60 per cent of the possession. "When you make those mistakes on set pieces and concentration, you dont deserve (points)," Chivas coach Wilmer Cabrera said. "You have to get punished in order for us to improve because weve been working — set pieces — weve been working on that, and today we lost concentration and then we got punished." Dallas midfielder Andrew Jacobson left the game in the 67th minute with what coach Oscar Pareja said was an "extreme" left ankle injury. Jacobson was on crutches after the game in the Dallas locker room. Jacobson, who came on in the 11th minute after Andrew Moffat tweaked a muscle in his left leg, hurt his ankle going for the ball and getting tangled with a Chivas player near midfield. Chivas Oswaldo Minda was replaced in first-half stoppage time with a right-leg injury that will be evaluated when the team gets home. Castillos strike came from a set piece that Diaz snapped into the box from 36 yards out. Veteran Honduran midfielder Hendry Thomas received the ball and headed it toward Castillo about 6 yards out, and Castillo swept it off Kennedys outstretched hand for the opener. Kennedy kept Chivas in the game in the first half when he saved a 30th-minute, point-blank header from Blas Perez, pushing the shot off the line to keep the game square. Both teams then started fouling more aggressively in the midfield and four yellow cards were shown in the final 15 minutes of the half, including three to Chivas players. The visitors picked up two more yellow cards in the second half, and Thomas earned an ejection during stoppage time. Ray Allen Thunder Jersey .28 for a combined time of 1:14.70, also an Olympic record. Lee won the gold medal, defending her title from the Vancouver Games. The Marlies centre set up three goals, including the game-winner, as Toronto cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Oklahoma City Barons in American Hockey League action.DENVER -- As the winning streak climbs, so does the stress level for San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich. At least, that was Tim Duncans assessment after the Spurs ran their streak to 16 straight by beating the Denver Nuggets 133-102 on Friday night. This is their longest regular-season win streak since reeling off 17 in a row from Feb. 29 to March 31, 1996. And Popovich seems to be growing more antsy with every victory. "Oh, very. Very, very, very. Very much," Duncan said. "Hes a teacher and wants to teach. He wants the good and the bad. Even through this streak, hes been on us a tremendous amount, making sure we dont rest on just the wins, but were learning from game to game." Popovich found a teaching moment in the third quarter with the game well in hand. His team relaxed on one possession and allowed an easy transition basket by Randy Foye. Popovich quickly called timeout and voiced his displeasure to his team. "Even as much as were up, he was still on us the entire game," Duncan said. Hard to find too much fault with the Spurs effort in this one. Marco Belinelli scored 27 points, Duncan had 20 and the Spurs scored a season high in points. San Antonio also maintained a three-game lead for the top seed in the Western Conference. Its a quick turnaround for the Spurs, who host New Orleans on Saturday. "This (winning streak) is great challenge," Duncan said. "Its a big challenge. People can get lackadaisical and look past certain games. Weve done a good job of not doing that." Foye scored 20 for a banged-up Nuggets squad that lost for the fourth time in five games. Wilson Chandler was out with a strained groin, while Timofey Mozgov and Kenneth Faried were hampered by an illness. Faried still finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. "Theyre devastated, injury-wise," Popovich said. "Its not a fair deal." Still, a 31-point loss was hard for Nuggets coach Brian Shaw to absorb, even if he is missing quite a few starters to season-ending injuries. "That was an embarrassing loss," Shaw said. "Just from every standpoint of the game -- defensively, body langguage, energy, just embarrassing, and it starts with me, just doing whatever I need to do to get our guys prepared and to come out and give the kind of energy and effort we need, especially playing the top team in the league. Custom Thunder Jerseys. " Belinelli stepped into the starting lineup with Danny Green hobbled by an inflamed right foot and quickly found his rhythm. Belinelli scored 14 in the first quarter and finished 10 of 15 from the field. "We really love to move the ball together, thats why were winning together right now," Belinelli said. Popovich insisted before the game that hes not going to overextend his players to secure the No. 1 seed in the West. His goal is to keep them "as healthy and energetic as possible at this time of year." The veteran coach didnt have to worry about taxing his team too much in this one, building a 25-point lead midway through the third quarter and resting most of his starters for a majority of the fourth. All this winning so close to the playoffs is making Popovich a little anxious because, "maybe this comes too easy," he said. "Losing is not a bad thing at this point of the year." Trailing 20-14 in the first, the Spurs closed out the quarter on a 17-3 run. The Nuggets couldnt rally back into the game, like they did Wednesday in San Antonio when they trailed the Spurs by 24 only to make it close down the stretch, before falling 108-103. "We just let them do basically what they wanted to do," Foye said. "We had more fight on their court last game than we did on our court tonight. Thats unacceptable. We didnt bring it tonight and against a team like that if you dont bring it, its going to be a long night for you." NOTES: San Antonio kept Matt Bonner (strained calf) at home because, "he wasnt going to play anyway," Popovich said. ... The Spurs finished with 37 assists, including seven by C Tiago Splitter. ... Nuggets F Jan Vesely (bruised rib cage) was back on the court after missing two games. He finished with five points. ... Reserve G Evan Fournier had 15 points for the Nuggets. ... Denver trailed by as many as 35 points. Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Jerseys From China Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys ' ' '

MONTREAL -- Coach Tom Higgins calls working with general manager Jim Popp "a match made in heaven. [url=http://www.hockeyoi

MONTREAL -- Coach Tom Higgins calls working with general manager Jim Popp "a match made in heaven. Leon Draisaitl Jersey ." And the pleasantries exchanged between the two men on a conference call on Tuesday made it hard to imagine they were rivals for the Montreal Alouettes head coaches job. That was settled when team owner Bob Wetenhall insisted that the jobs of coach and general manager be kept separate, and that Popp would have to stick to his GM duties. "This is the model that has made us successful," said Wetenhall. "This has given Jim the time and the freedom to go out and build our team, year after year, always with a few new players added. "To have a GM with the freedom and the time to do this is the model we really wanted to go back to." In the 59-year-old Higgins, the Alouettes hired a CFL veteran who spent seven years as a head coach in Edmonton and Calgary, winning a Grey Cup with the Eskimos in 2003. The Woodbridge, N.J., native spent the last six years as the leagues director of officiating. "Tom brings a winning record and a tremendous reputation as a stand-up, high class guy," said Wetenhall. Popp, the teams general manager since it returned to Montreal in 1996 who is considered among the CFLs best, had hoped to continue in both jobs after taking over from the fired Dan Hawkins, who had no previous CFL experience, only five games in to the 2013 campaign. When Higgins was confirmed in the job on Monday, it raised speculation that Popp may be on his way out. Wetenhall would not confirm Popps long-term status with the club, but made it clear he wanted his GM to stay. And Popp, whose name has been linked to NFL jobs in recent years, said hes wants to carry on. "Ive been with the Alouettes for 18 years -- I plan on being there, its my other home," said Popp. "Ive had six children that were all born in Montreal and I really have no interest in leaving. "Circumstances come up, but the organization knows how loyal I am. Im a company man and its a place I enjoy being. Theres a lot that gets thrown around out there, a lot of it thats not true. But Im very happy." That Popp joined in the conference call was a surprise. His name wasnt mentioned in the Higgins announcement. And it was unusual that the general manager was not involved in the decision to hire the head coach. Wetenhalls son Andrew, a team governor, said that as a candidate for the coaching job, Popp would have been in conflict of interest if he had a say in who the next coach would be. But Popp had provided the owners with a list of potential coaching candidates with an assessment of their abilities. "This is a case where two people can work together who didnt select one another," said Andrew Wetenhall. "We have the added benefit of two guys who know each other and have a heck of a lot of respect for each other." Higgins said he didnt feel awkward at all working with Popp. "I couldnt be happier," he said. "I think our personalities complement one another. "We both want the same thing. This is an opportunity for myself to get back on the field where I belong. This is not a challenge whatsoever." Higgins first job will be to hire an offensive co-ordinator and fill out the coaching staff, which he expects to complete within 10 days. The Alouettes had already signed defensive co-ordinator Noel Thorpe to a two-year contract extension on Dec. 4, with the added title of assistant head coach. They also confirmed that Andre Bolduc, a former CFL player and head coach at Sherbrooke University, was signed as a defensive assistant coach. Wetenhall said one of Higgins assets was his ability to work with young quarterbacks, which will be needed in Montreal this season. For the first time since 2000, they will not have Anthony Calvillo as the starter as the CFLs all-time passing leader has retired. Troy Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, and youngster Tanner Marsh are expected to compete for the starting job, with Alex Brink also in the picture. Higgins said he has worked with gifted young pivots before in Henry Burris and Ricky Ray. He feels the Alouettes can improve on last years 8-10 season. "Ive always marvelled at the level of talent in Montreal," he said. "I hope to bring a level of consistency and discipline. "We are going to be competitive and entertaining. And when you start doing that and playing disciplined football, usually you win more than you lose." Bill Ranford Oilers Jersey . Seager had another triple, a home run and a double in a rare feat not seen in more than 40 years, leading Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners past the New York Yankees 10-2. "It was a weird play," Seager said of the triple in the fourth inning. Laurent Brossoit Oilers Jersey . Then he got back at the team that released him five days before the start of last season, hitting a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning of the first game at Fenway Park since Boston won the World Series last October. http://www.hockeyoilersonline.us/Nail-Yakupov-Jersey/ . OTTAWA - Former University of Waterloo football player Nathan Zettler, who pleaded guilty to steroid trafficking in 2013, has been suspended for four years by Canadas anti-doping agency. ArDarius Stewart Youth Jersey .The suspension was handed down by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport on Sept. 8.While under suspension, Zettler is ineligible to participate in any capacity with any sport that complies with the Canadian Anti-Doping Program, a set of rules that governs doping control in Canada.A former wide receiver with the Waterloo Warriors, Zettler was at the centre of a doping scandal at the school four years ago.Waterloo suspended its entire football program in 2010 after urine tests conducted revealed several players had committed anti-doping violations. In 2013, Zettler was convicted on three counts of possession and possession for the purpose of trafficking in anabolic steroids. Marcus Maye Youth Jersey . The day began ominously for the Rangers when star pitcher Yu Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start with stiffness in his neck. Fill-in Scott Baker gave up three hits over six innings and Chris Gimenez hit a tiebreaking two-out RBI single in the sixth off Phil Hughes. Jamal Adams Youth Jersey . -- Pinch-runner Rajai Daviss decision to steal third base just as Oakland catcher Derek Norris was throwing the ball back to the pitcher caught most everyone by surprise -- including several of his Detroit teammates. http://www.thejetsjerseysshoponline.com/Youth-Marcus-Maye-Letes-Jersey/ .com) - Hassan Whiteside scored 20 points with nine rebounds in the Miami Heats 83-75 win over the Boston Celtics on Sunday.TORONTO -- Former star striker Kara Lang played at the Under-20 Womens World Cup on two occasions before devoting her full attention to the Canadian womens senior team. She still remembers the massive roar of the home crowd when the Canadians walked out on the pitch before 47,784 fans at Commonwealth Stadium in 2002. Lang expects a similar reception for the Canadian team as the host nation at this years tournament, which begins Tuesday. "Nothing can compare to that -- the level of intensity, the crowd support that you get," Lang said in a recent interview. "I was 15 at the time, the rest of the team was 16, 17, 18-year-olds and to be playing in front of crowds of 50,000 people cheering for you, its unlike anything else. "Thats what this team is going to experience as well." Langs appearance at the inaugural tournament in Edmonton -- at that time it was a U-19 event -- came shortly after she made her debut with the senior team. There are several Canadian players who will be in a similar position for the 2014 tournament, which will be played Aug. 5-24 in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. Midfielder Jessie Fleming has suited up for the senior team before and also played at the U-17 competition. "Its perfect because weve experienced a big tournament and we know what its like dealing with not a lot of recovery time and intense matches," she said. "I think that will help." Canada held a camp in mid-July in Mexico and will open the tournament Tuesday at BMO Field with a Group A game against Ghana. Canada will play Finland on Friday in Toronto before heading to Montreal for an Aug. 12 game against North Korea. Centre backs Kadeisha Buchanan and Rebecca Quinn, fullback Sura Yekka, midfielder Ashley Lawrence and forward Nichelle Prince are the other Canadian players with senior team experience. Defender Kinley McNicoll will serve as captain and Kailen Sheridan is the No. 1 goalie. Canada went 1-2-0 at the 2012 tournament and failed to advance out of the group stage. Andrew Olivieri is back as coach and senior team coach John Herdman is serving as high-performance director. The Canadian program has an eye on the big picture for all youth competitions and this one is no different. Olivieri wants his players to move closer to taking that next step to the senior team and hopefully achieve success along the way. "Six games at the international level is the most we can get out of this tournament," Olivieri said. "So thats going to take winning a quarter-final and thats going to remain our objective: is win a quarter-final, get into a semi and whether its a semi, a final, a third-place game, thats just what the system needs riight now. Marcus Maye Jets Jersey. " Group B includes the U.S., Germany, China and Brazil. Group C is made up of England, Mexico, Nigeria and South Korea while Group D consists of Costa Rica, France, New Zealand and Paraguay. Germany and the defending champion Americans have combined to win five of the six previous U-20 tournaments while North Korea won in 2006. All three teams are expected to be strong again this year. The top two teams from each pool advance to the quarter-finals, which will be shared by the four host cities. Moncton and Montreal will host the semifinals and Montreal will stage the final and third-place match. The tournament comes a year before Canada hosts the 2015 Womens World Cup. "For a lot of these players, its kind of a warmup for them because a number of them will be playing in 2015 next summer with the full womens team," Lang said. "Next summer wont be such a shock to them if theyve gone through something like this. "It can be a bit of a shock when you walk out onto the field ... as the tournament grows, the support grows. By the time we walked out to crowds of 10 and 20,000 people (in 2002), we were floored and then it just grew as the tournament went on. In a number of ways its great preparation." Olivieri said his squad will be the youngest U-20 team Canada has ever fielded in the tournament. "Well be talented but we will be young," he said. "Its hard to tell how well stack up against other teams." Buchanan, one of the anchors of the Canadian defence, isnt lacking for confidence. "Our team is capable of dominating the opposition," she said. "Playing in their half and just getting (shots) on net." Fleming echoed those thoughts. "I think were capable of going all the way," she said. "I think its going to be tough. Its going to be tough for any team to win the tournament. We just have to take it game by game." Lang said there are always a few surprise results because it can be challenging to track the development of other national youth programs. She expects Olivieri and Herdman will have the players ready and prepared. "They have really implemented a system and a philosophy of mental toughness," she said. "It really is just based on individual players knowing their roles and focusing on that." Langs other U-20 appearance came in Thailand in 2004. She played in two World Cups -- in 2003 and 2007 -- as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Her eyes still light up when she talks about that magical ride to the final in 2002. "Playing in an international tournament at home in front of Canadian fans -- you cant beat it," she said. SEATTLE - The Seattle Seahawks had a 24-3 lead over winless Oakland at halftime. Jaccob Slavin Hurricanes Jersey Authentic . The injury-ravaged defending Super Bowl champions ended up barely holding on.This week, came out, played three quarters and then the fourth quarter we took our foot off the pedal or whatnot, Seattle defensive end Cliff Avril said. We just have to be consistent and be able to put a full game together.Seattle escaped with a 30-24 victory Sunday, leaning heavily on Marshawn Lynch and a stingy defence that gave rookie quarterback Derek Carr headaches. Russell Wilson struggled through one of his worst passing games, going 17 of 35 for 179 yards. The Seahawks (5-3) wont look back on this victory with any reverence, other than the ability to grind out their second straight win.Lynch had two first-half touchdown runs and his day would have been much bigger if not for penalties calling back some significant gains. Lynch finished with 143 total yards rushing and receiving and had 26 touches. Its a team game. We played as a team, Lynch said.Oakland (0- lost its 14th straight game dating to last season. The Raiders have been competitive, but continue to make critical mistakes they cant overcome. This time it was three first-half turnovers, including Carrs two interceptions.Im just trying to do too much, Carr said. I just needed to settle down. I came in at the half and said Man, I just need to play football. Im here for a reason and I just need to settle down and do my job. Here are other things learned from Seattles victory:IRVINS IMPACT: The past two weeks has shown the potential of Bruce Irvin and why the Seahawks can often live with some of his mistakes.Last week against Carolina, Irvin had two key sacks on Carolinas final possession that displayed his pure pass rush ability. Sunday his pure athleticism was on display. Irvins interception showed everything Carroll has admired about Irvin since he was recruiting him at Southern California. Irvin dropped into coverage and jumped to deflect Carrs pass into the air. He came down and located the ball, grabbing the interception, then used his speed to beat Carr to the pylon for the first touchdown of his career.Tried to be opportunistic and try to make a play when I can. I was just fortunate enough that it bounced straight up and came back down, Irvin said.THIRD PHASE: Oakland was able to get back in it in the second half because of its special teams. Denico Autry blocked Jon Ryans punt on the first possession and Brice Butler recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. It was the first blocked punt for a touchdown against Seattle since 2003 and the second for Oakland in the past two seasons.T.J. Carrie made up for a first-half kickoff return fumble with a 27-yard punt return to set up Carrs first touchdown toss to Rivera late in the third quarter. We needed something to be able to turn the tide a little bit, coach Tony Sparano said.LINE DANCE: Seattles injuries continued to pile up and led to more shuffling especially on the offensive line. Patrick Lewis started at centre because of injuries to Max Unger and Stephen Schilling. Russell Okung was inactive, leaving Alvin Bailey to make his first start at left tackle. Left guard James Carpenter went down in the second half with an ankle injury and was replaced by Garry Gilliam — a tackle. The shuffling up front certainly didnt help Seattles struggling pass game although Carroll didnt want to use that as an excuse for Wilson. He wasnt concerned about that going in and didnt feel it during the game either, Carroll said.SHERMS TURN: Seattles Richard Sherman was patiently waiting for a ball to come his direction that he could make a play on and finally get his first interception of the season.Carr was willing to oblige, attempting a back-shoulder throw for Andre Holmes. Sherman had better position and was able to pull the ball in with his left hand. It was his first interception since Week 16 of last season and was welcomed after going through games earlier this season where he wasnt even thrown at.Just waiting. There hasnt been a year yet I havent got one, Sherman said. I knew eventually; if youre out there long enough and youre in position and youre playing the game the way you are supposed to, the football Gods will get what you need.___AP NFL websites: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Teuvo Teravainen Hurricanes Jersey .85 million contract with the two-time Gold Glove outfielder. He originally got hurt on Feb. 25, 2012, during a fielding drill in Oaklands first full-squad spring training workout and had surgery that March 21 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.WASHINGTON -- Bryce Harpers return had an immediate impact on the Washington Nationals lineup on Monday night. Adam LaRoche homered, Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and Ian Desmond added two doubles and three RBIs batting seventh as the Nationals welcomed back Harper with a 7-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. Harper, who missed 57 games because of a torn ligament in his left thumb, went 1 for 3 with an RBI single -- on Bryce Harper bobblehead night. "Having such a deep lineups huge," Harper said. "One through eight, pick your poison because youre going to get a guy who can hit the ball out of the ballpark or hit a double or anything like that." Jordan Zimmermann (6-4) allowed two runs in six innings as Washington won its third straight. The Nationals trailed 2-1 before a five-run sixth. With runners on first and second and one out, Zimmerman doubled to left off reliever Rod Scahill, scoring Anthony Rendon. "I tried to go in on Zimmerman, I missed two times in," Scahill said. "The third time in, it was a little bit more down than I wanted it to be and thats where he can get to that ball. And he got to it." Harper was walked intentionally and Desmond followed with a bases-clearing double into the left-field corner. "Thats the kind of decision-making and pressure we want to apply," manager Matt Williams said. "Bryce is a very good hitter, hed come through earlier in the game against the lefty for a base hit and an RBI and those are the decisions you have to make in that regard." Monday night marked the first time since opening day -- when catcher Wilson Ramos left the game with an injury -- that this starting eight had taken the field. Desmond is 6-for-6 with the bases loaded this season and, for his career is 11-for-17 with 16 RBIs when the batter before him is walked intentionally. "I just try to do the same thing I do every other time," said Desmond, who stole third and scored on Ramos grounder to second. Zimmermann, who finished June with a 3-2 record and a 1.43 ERA in six starts, allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked one. Hed been a victim of poor run support while going 0-2 in his last three outings. "Im just locating really well right noow," he said. Elias Lindholm Hurricanes Jersey Authentic. "Nothing really has changed, just locating well and the sliders really good. (If) I have those two things working together, I can usually string some pretty good starts together." Justin Morneau had three hits for the Rockies, who have lost 12 of 14 and finished the month of June 8-20. Yohan Flande (0-1), making his second start, was charged with three runs on six hits. He left with a 2-1 lead and runners on first and second in the sixth. "I think Flande was throwing the ball really well, but the first two guys got on in the inning," manager Walt Weiss said. "A guy making his second major league start, you want to be out in front of stuff before it happens to a kid like that. "Wasnt real comfortable with the Zimmerman matchup and went and tried to play a matchup that didnt work out." Harper, batting sixth and playing left field, was given a standing ovation when he batted in the second after LaRoches one-out single, but grounded into a double play. In the fourth, however, after Zimmerman doubled with two outs, Harper brought him home with a sharp grounder up the middle. "Its a strong lineup and I dont think theres too many opposing pitchers out there that want to see it," Desmond said. "It was nice to have Bryce back." The Rockies took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Drew Stubbs and Troy Tulowitzki, a line-drive single by Morneau that moved Tulowitzki to third, and sacrifice fly by Ryan Wheeler to short centre. NOTES: To make room for Harper, the Nationals optioned LHP reliever Xavier Cedeno to Triple-A Syracuse. ... Colorado placed RHP Jhoulys Chacin (inflamed shoulder) on the 15-day DL. Manager Walt Weiss said Franklin Morales will make Chacins scheduled Thursday start, giving the Rockies five left-handers in their starting rotation. The Rockies recalled RHP reliever Chad Bettis from Triple-A Colorado Springs. ... Rockies OF Corey Dickerson, who left Sundays game with a hamstring cramp in the eighth inning, was not in the starting lineup, but entered as part of a double switch in the sixth. ... Each week, TSN. Lonzo Ball Swingman Jersey .ca Fantasy Editor Scott Cullen, NFL Editor Ben Fisher, and Isaac Owusu discuss three hot fantasy football topics. Will Marc Trestman be benching a QB1 in Josh McCown when Jay Cutler returns healthy? Cullen: For the last three weeks, yes, Josh McCown has been performing like a QB1, but that alone does not a QB1 make. Prior to this unexpected bit of brilliance from a 34-year-old journeyman, McCowns last 300-yard passing game was in September, 2007! That said, I could easily justify the Bears riding the hot hand until its not hot anymore because the NFL is unrelenting and the Bears can ill-afford to take a game or two for Jay Cutler to find his form. Of course, in addition to being unrelenting, the NFL is a business, and when prospective free agent quarterback Jay Cutler is ready to return, expect the Bears to go back to him, as a conditioned reflex – remember, starting quarterbacks dont lose their job due to injuries…at least not to a 34-year-old backup, but ask Alex Smith, the story is different if that backup is Colin Kaepernick. Fisher: I agree with pretty much everybody else that going back to Cutler over McCown at this point would be a mistake on Trestmans part, but Ill stop short of saying hes benching a QB1. McCown averages out as a QB1 over the past four weeks but thats largely aided by his tremendous Monday Night performance this past week. His five starts previous to that, McCown ranked as a high-end QB2. His journeyman status makes it hard for me to believe hed continue putting up 30+ point games like he did against the Cowboys if given the chance, but hes still a tough QB to lose for fantasy teams. Owusu: In a word, yes. But, its not so much about the guy taking the snaps, but the guy calling the plays. Trestman has put together an offence that would appear to be at the centre of a controversy, but unlike the Alex Smith/Colin Kaepernick situation in San Francisco last season, his coaching staff and players have stood firm in supporting the injured Cutler as their starter. Chicagos quarterback position, whether it be (a healthy) Cutler or McCown, remains worthy of a start this deep in the fantasy playoffs, due to having what can be argued as the leagues most talented receiving corps, featuring Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Matt Forte and Martellus Bennett. Its almost an expectation that whoever is throwing the ball would rack up 200+ yards and at least two touchdowns. In fact this season Cutler has had five of those games and McCown has had four, coming off his third straight 300+ yard passing game. The main concerns with Cutler would be a matter of him being fully healthy going into the game and getting back in sync with the plethora of weapons at his disposal. The latter shouldnt be a major concern, as evidence by the 250 yards and touchdown pass he threw in his Week 10 return (before leaving again to yet another injury). This deep into the season, with all the implications, fantasy owners would prefer the Bears keep the hot McCown out there, but even if Cutler comes in, there shouldnt be a downgrade in performance. Also, owners should consider that this week the Bears are in Cleveland, a team that hasnt held a QB to under two touchdowns passes since Week 5, so whichever quarterback the Bears turn to should be a dependable option and all the Bears receiving targets remain must-start status. Trust in the quarterback whisperer, Marc Trestman. Has Cordarelle Patterson proven enough for a fantasy playoff team to take a flyer on him? Cullen: Patterson had a breakthrough game last week – five catches, 141 yards and a touchdown – and he is probably the most dangerous Vikings receiver for the rest of the season, but he had one catch for four yards in Week 12 and still has Matt Cassel throwing to him, so there are reasons to be hesitant on Patterson. I have him ranked at 35 for Week 15, which puts him on the edge of either WR3 or FLEX positioning. Fisher: Nope. One good week does not a starter make. Patterson has looked better in recent weeks, highlighted by his 20-point performance in Week 13, and I think hes got a shot at being a solid WR2 next season, but he still has Matt Cassel throwing him the ball. I cant rely on Patterson to score more than eight or nine points per week (his previous season-high) the rest of the way and that isnt going to cut it for a playoff team. Owusu: The regular season is three games away from completion and it almost appears that the Minnesota Vikings finally figured out how to use the elusive receiver that they traded up to pick in the draft. Patterson is worthy of taking a flyer on based on the increased attention that hes gotten. Heading into Week 5s bye week, Patterson only saw 2.25 targets per game, however in the nine games following he has seen that number boost to 5.5 per game, and garnered 7.75 looks in his last four games. In last Sundays wild matchup against at the Baltimore Ravens, Pattersons seven targets and five catches was one thing, but then there was the 114 yards he gained after the catch. Patterson has shown that he is Mr. High Risk/High Reward with the ability to turn the smallest plays into large gains, similar to another guy who once wore No. 84 for the Vikings about a decade ago. Patterson is not just a threat on offence but special teams as well, so if youre in a league that rewards individual players for their returns along with their catches and rushes then Patterson should appeal to you as a low-end WR2 or a definite Flex going forward in the playoffs. The Vikings are at home against the high-powered Philadelphia Eagles and will likely not have their star running back Adrian Peterson, so expect them to be playing a bit of catch up in this game, and Matt Cassel should keep looking for the blossoming receiver. For the Gronk owners, which replacement will prove more valuable: Dennis Pitta, recently returned from a hip injury; or Jacob Tamme, filling for Wes Welker in the slot in Denver? Cullen: If forced to choose for the rest of the season, I prefer Pitta, because in his first game of the season for the Ravens, he was targeted 11 times, tied with Marlon Brown for most on the Ravens against Minnesota. There is also the matter of sustainability. Tammes value is tied to Wes Welkers concussion and if Welker returns at some point in the next few weeks, that would dramatically cut out the looks that Tamme would presume to get in the slot. In Pittas case, hes a good bet to be a prime target for Joe Flacco over the rest of the season. Fisher: I think it depends if youre playing the short game or the long game. I think Tamme, filling in for a concussed Wes Welker in the slot in Denver, will have a more productive Week 14 in what should be a high-scoring Thursday Nighter. Tamme had four catches on five targets in a little more than two quarters action; thats a handsome stat line projected out to a full game. If youre a semifinals underdog, he might be the way to go to secure a spot in the finals at all cost. But if youre playing the long game, Pitta, who returned from injury to put up a double digit point total in his season debut last week, should be able to supply two productive weeks, as where Tamme could become useless in Week 15 if Welker returns. Owusu: As appealing as it is to take an available Peyton Manning target in Jacob Tamme, the answer for this week, next week and however long your fantasy playoffs may last is Dennis Pitta. Throughout his career, the Baltimore Ravens tight end has been a safety net for Joe Flacco. Pitta was projected to be a top-five pick at tight end prior to his injury and in his first game of the season last week he rewarded owners who took a chance on him in the playoffs with six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. The worry about Pitta initially was the expectation for him to be on a limited snap-count, but he made the most of the 11 targets that came his way. Tamme was a pleasant surprise last Sunday filling in for the injured Wes Welker, seeing six targets and pulling in four catches for 47 yards. On the field, theres always a chance that teams forget about Tamme while theyre busy focusing on Mannings three other fantasy studs Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas. Tamme should see some involvement in the Denver Broncos explosive offence Thursday night, but expectations for his value to be greater than Pittas for Baltimore should be tempered. Though Pitta was in for 36 snaps, two of his 11 targets came in the red zone. Facing the Detroit Lions who have a sweltering run defence, theres a tall order for Flacco to deliver in the passing game so expect a good dose of Pitta. Unless its a Percy Harvin type of setback, he should see increased work as a means for the Ravens to make a playoff push. Lonzo Ball Womens Jersey . Seven former players filed a motion to intervene in the court case pending in Philadelphia, which aims to settle thousands of claims through a grid-like formula that reaches $5 million for younger retirees with Alzheimers disease. The latest objections come from men who can perhaps still work, but say they still suffer from headaches, personality changes, trouble multi-tasking and other side effects they link to concussions suffered while playing in the league. "The settlement provided no monetary recovery — nothing at all — for class members suffering from many of the residual effects most commonly linked to recurrent and repetitive mild traumatic brain injury, while releasing every claim these class members may have against the NFL," lawyer Steven Molo wrote in the court filing. Senior U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody fears the settlement is too low to cover 20,000 retirees for 65 years, as planned. Lawyers for both the NFL and the lead players group hope to convince her otherwise. "Were still (working) with the speecial master and the judge . Lonzo Ball Jersey. .. to review the settlement agreement and rightfully ensure that all members of the class are protected," said lawyer Sol Weiss, a lawyer for the lead players in the case. "We look forward to finalizing the agreement." The NFL takes in more than $9 billion in revenue annually, a figure that will rise with new TV contracts this year. The settlement does not include an admission from the NFL that it hid information from players about head injuries. A few groups of players have asked to intervene in the settlement talks to raise various concerns. The group Monday includes 2008 Pro Bowl player Sean Morey, now a sprint football coach at Princeton University. The vast majority of the proposed $765 million fund would compensate former players with one of four neurological conditions: Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, Lou Gehrigs disease or advanced dementia. Awards could also reach $4 million for deaths linked posthumously to chronic traumatic encephalopathy. At the low end, an 80-year-old with early dementia would get $25,000. Retirees without symptoms would get baseline screening and follow-up care if needed. The agreement also sets aside $75 million for medical exams and $10 million for medical research. The Day in 100 Words or Less It was another delicious day at the World Cup. Tyler Ennis Sabres Jersey . The trends continued, and oh boy please let them continue on and on: Space in zone 14 for number 10s to exploit, clinical counter attacks, high defensive lines, poor defending, surprise results and lots and lots of goals. International football desperately needs a really good World Cup. At the moment it is providing a really great one. England 1-2 Italy - What a wonderful game of football. - Great teams can exploit an opponents weakness and Cesare Prandellis men did exactly that by working many of their attacks down the right. Matteo Darmian and Antonio Candreva tore England to shreds on that flank. Yes, Leighton Baines looked very average on a big stage but he wasnt helped. - Wayne Rooney, asked to play the left side of a three inside a 4-2-3-1, struggled terribly defending his flank. Roy Hodgson felt he did very well but if that was the case what was the reason for switching him to the right at the start of the second half? - Rooney will become the scapegoat the English press need to feast on but for a supposed world class player it is hard to feel sympathy for a man who has created a bar that is higher than most in that country. Few genuine world class players (which Rooney is not) do not play in four different positions during a game which is what the Manchester United man did, flipping from the left to the right back to the left and then up front as England made their subs. For me, he should be played up top as a striker but it is clear his manager has very little faith in him at the moment. - Rooney, who wasted a great chance by blasting wide on 61 minutes, has now played nine games in World Cups, combining for 685 minutes. He has more red cards (1) than goals (0). - Rooneys positioning aside it is difficult to think of anything Hodgson could have done differently. His team simply isnt near as good as Italy. He had no answer for the technical brilliance of Italys central midfield so he played his own game, counter attacking with pace. - That was how they scored their goal, from this position (below) when it took five seconds for Sterling-Rooney-Daniel Sturridge to make it 1-1. - Italy were excellent. Andrea Pirlo was even better than he was two years ago at Euro 2012 and alongside Daniele De Rossi and Marco Verratti were able to dictate the flow of the game. - England defended well and countered but it was difficult to play that style for the entire game and once again England didnt score in the second half (eighth time in their last nine at major tournaments). - Italy did and it came from a break down the right. Darmian hugged the touchline while the runs of his team-mates already had England nervous as Baines points... Darmian plays Candreva in behind and Englands backline is stretched... Claudio Marchisio makes an intelligent run to distract Glen Johnson. Candreva cuts back and prepares a great cross for Mario Balotelli to head home the winning goal. Colombia 2-0 Greece - The wonderfully proud country of Colombia had waited 5832 days to see their team play at a World Cup. Few things are worth waiting that long for but no Colombian in Belo Horizonte cared anything about the past on this day. - A year ago they were considered a contender for this World Cup. It scarred the country terrorized by high expectations of 1994 that ended in tragic circumstances. A year on, they were written off by some. Now it was their time to shine. - The stadium was a sea of yellow and on the pitch the game was played at South American pace. For the third successive day a South American team scored early, and when Pablo Armeros shot bundled into the back of the net on five minutes it was the earliest goal of the World Cup so far. - Armero got the glory but the architect was James Rodriguez. Without Radamel Falcao, manager Jose Pekerman misses a star striker but it does allow him to play five in midfield, something you cannot do with Falcao in the side. This meant James was placed deeper in a number ten role where he was given license to roam all over the field. - On the opening goal he picked up the ball deep and had the vision and guile to play a gorgeous ball into space for Juan Cuadrado to run on to. The moment he pinned the ball deep he sprinted into the box and within eight seconds was in the box, receiving the ball and drawing defenders towards him. Moments after this shot he dummied the ball and allowed Armero to slot the goal home. - Greece were forced to come out of their comfort zone and were the best team for 30 minutes in the first half. This is important because their World Cup is not solely based one match. How they react to this will be vital. Uruguay 1-3 Costa Rica - It is the World Cup that keeps on giving. A stunning result in Fortaleza has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons inside group D and no one can say Costa Rica didnt deserve it. - They were 7:1 underdogs heading into this game but they showed just how silly those odds looked. They never looked unsettled after going a goal down, through an Edinson Cavani penalty, and would defend brilliantly when asked. - At times they played a 5-5-0 formation with Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell dropping deep and demanding the ball. It was some contrast to Uruguays front two who couldnt get in the game. - World Cups do not care one bit for reputations. They create them. Many times we have seen old, slow players passed their prime be chewed up by the biggest stage and a day after Iker Casillas faltered for Spain, Diego Forlan did the same for Uruguay. - With no Luis Suarez (knee), Uruguays over-reliance on the front two meant the 2010 Golden Ball winner was thrust back into the limelight. It seemed like a big gamble by Oscar Tabarez and so it proved. Uruguay have a pedestrian midfield four, their wide players offer little, meaning the front two needs to click. Forlans place in the side pushed Edinson Cavani further forward and the two were invisible. Cavani is wasted as a pure target man. - It was a night that exposed Uruguays flaws. Much of their success has come against teams who have a lot of the ball who they can counter against. They couldnt do that today and, for once, when asked to be the team that dictated the match they buckled. - Fernando Muslera in goal is pathetic at this level; his centre-backs have no confidence in him or each other at set plays and dont have any help defensively – outside of Cavani – when clearing. The alarm bells were ringing in that area at half-time and Costa Rica exposed them in the second half. - Joel Campbell was great and benefited from a superb cross to score the first and laid in Marco Urena to complete the rout to make it 3-1. In between, Oscar Duarte wasnt tracked on a free kick and scored at the back post although he was inches offside. Ivory Coast 2-1 Japan - It was played while many slept in their beds or stumbled over their pint glass but if you missed it, you missed another good one. - For the fourth time already at this World Cup a team came from a losing position to take the lead. - Another trend at this World Cup has been momentum and, down 1-0 in the 64th minute Ivory Coast rocked Japan back, through the lively right back Serge Aurier. The Toulouse man, destined for a move to the Premier League, produced two outstanding crosses into the box in three minutes and headers from Wilfried Bony and Gervinho changed the game. - Japan, ahead through a Keisuke Honda bullet, couldnt find another gear. Much like Croatia, Spain and Uruguay they had been rocked by a comeback and were not the same when behind. - Yaya Toure doesnt look himself, however, and a funny moment took place in the first half when the ball from a teammate hit him in the face. He shook it off without a problem but I wondered if his mate didnt care too much for birthday cakes. Man of the Day Nominees: Mark Geiger – The World Cup needed a good referee to step up and get things right. The American, who was helped by Canadian Joe Fletcher as his assistant, did exactly that in the first day of the game. James Rodriguez – The Monaco magician was 7-years-old the last time Colombia played a World Cup. He has performed wonderfully in the Champions League but this was his big moment. He is so important to Jose Pekerman, allowing him to play five in midfield and be that deep lying playmaker, making up a midfield three, while also providing the decisive runs into the final third. His passing map (46 of 52) was special. (Stats powered by Opta) Joel Campbell – We should be careful using small sample sizes to come to conclusions about the club game but no one can convince me that Yaya Sanogo is a better option at Arsenal, the club that Campbell belongs to. Andrea Pirlo – Nothing he does should surprise anyone any more. England couldnt find a plan to counter him so they simply didnt even try this time. Antonio Candreva – His tactical intelligence was marvelous. It is one thing for a coach to set out a team to play a certain way; it is something different to have his players recognize key developments in-game. The winner: Andrea Pirlo – Candreva may have changed the game, Balotelli and Claudio Marchisio may have scored the goals but it was Pirlo who was the maestro and who everyone was talking about. It doesnt matter what country you support, this is the last time you will see the magician at a World Cup. Simply sit back and enjoy him while you can. What Comes Next? Switzerland vs Ecuador (12pm/9am), France vs Honduras (3pm/noon), Argentina vs Bosnia-Herzegovina (6pm/3pm). Burning Question for Tomorrow Can Switzerlands young stars find the space and beat Ecuador in a pivotal Group E match? Key stat of Day 3 At the 2010 World Cup 25 goals were scored through the first 16 games. At the 2014 World Cup only half the teams have played and we are already at 28 goals. Bjorn grabbed an eagle and eight birdies to end his round two shots clear of Shane Lowry of Ireland, who shot 64 on the West Course. However, poor weather forced two separate delays totalling nearly two hours in the European Tours flagship event, and darkness halted play with 33 in the 150-man field yet to complete their first round. It is the third occasion in Bjorns 21-year European Tour career hes shot a round of 62, and the Dane rated it the best in his 434 tournaments. "Absolutely," he said. "You cant ask for much more." Bjorn is contesting his 17th BMW PGA, with his best finish being a share of fifth in 1988, and comes after he missed the cut in the Spanish Open last week with 75-78. "Last week was awful, and I was starting to feel a bit frustrated with things, and to be honest in practice, it hasnt been great, either," he said. "So ... today is a little bit surprising. "I havent had the best record here. I havent had the best round here. Its been a long time since Ive actually had any sort of result on this golf course. Its not a place when I come in here, I think, Oh, this is going tto be a great week. Gilbert Perreault Jersey. I guess Ive got to start sticking my head down for the rest of the week." Lowry produced his best round since a Carnoustie course-record 64 last October in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. He made only 25 putts with an old putter he found in his Dublin apartment. "I have been messing about here and there with putters, and pulled this one out, got the cobwebs off it," he said. Rafa Cabrera-Bello of Spain was alone in third place with a 65, and Gary Stal of France made the most of his last minute call-up by shooting a 66. Stal was first reserve for the event, and took the place of countryman Victor Dubuisson, who pulled out injured. Rory McIlroys 4-under 68 included holing his second shot for eagle at the par-four seventh hole, and landing his second shot to within six inches for eagle at the par-five 12th. "The two eagles helped, and its a good round for me around this place," he said. "Its a place Ive notoriously struggled on, but it was good to shoot something in the sixties." Henrik Stenson, who can become the new world No. 1 with a good result, also carded 68. However, defending champion Matteo Manassero of Italy slumped to an 8-over 80 that included a quadruple-bogey nine at the 17th. The Grizzlies could have closed out the Thunder at home, but Oklahoma City jumped on them from the start and rolled to a 20-point victory. Now, Memphis must play Game 7 on the road Saturday without scoring leader Zach Randolph and possibly point guard Mike Conley. Randolph was suspended for punching Steven Adams in the jaw late in Game 6. The Grizzlies had no comment on the NBAs decision after landing in Oklahoma City, according to team spokesman Jason Wallace. Conley strained his right hamstring in the loss and is struggling to recover. Memphis backup point guard, Nick Calathes, is out for the series because of a drug suspension, meaning No. 3 point guard Beno Udrih will likely carry more responsibility against Russell Westbrook and Reggie Jackson, two of the quickest point guards in the NBA. Conley said Friday that he plans to play, but he expects to be sore. "Me being banged up, youre going to have to ask more out of different guys, see a lot of guys step up," he said. "Were still excited and confident going into tomorrows game, regardless of injuries and how last nights game went." Memphis coach Dave Joergers team has dealt with injuries and lineup changes all season. Tony Allen missed 27 games this season, Marc Gasol 23 and Conley nine. Kosta Koufos and Ed Davis will likely fill Randolphs minutes. "This is it," Joerger said. "Whatever you want to say about the season, its all come down to one game. Certainly, for us to have the best chance to win, we have to play better than we did last night." Even with the issues the Grizzlies face, nothing has been certain in this matchup. The home team has won just twice in a series that has featured four overtime games. Thunder star Kevin Durant said Game 7 is like playing in the NCAA tournament. "You dont have no other option but to win," he said. "You cant get the game back. Its Game 7. You have to be ready to go." The teams have met in the playoffs three of the past four years. Oklahoma City beat Memphis in seven games in the 2011 Western Conference semifinals. "I remember the feeling afterward, and I dont want to repeat that," Gasol said. If the Grizzliess cant control Westbrook, a repeat is possible. Patrick Roy Avalanche Jersey. Westbrook, who at times has played recklessly in the series, scored an efficient 25 points on Thursday and engineered an offence that shot 49 per cent. His willingness to set up his teammates helped Durant score 14 points in the first quarter. "He was really mindful of looking for guys and finding guys early, picking and choosing his spots well," Durant said. Durant bounced back from his recent struggles with 36 points and 10 rebounds in Game 6. He made 6 of 10 shots in the first quarter Thursday night to set the tone and went 11 for 23 from the field. "Kevin just came out with a different kind of assertiveness last game," Oklahoma City guard Caron Butler said. "He was just real precise and he was vocal." The Grizzlies said they cant allow Durant to get going like that again or their season might be over. "We have to be better at finding him," Allen said. "We understand what he wants to do. Weve just got to be the aggressors on the defensive end. We understand coming into this series, hes going to be an MVP-type player, and we just have to be ready." Thunder coach Scott Brooks, who rarely makes lineup changes, started Butler at shooting guard over Thabo Sefolosha in Game 6. Butler, a better offensive threat than Sefolosha, helped space the floor and opened lanes for Durant and Westbrook. Brooks said Butler will remain in the starting lineup for Saturdays game. Brooks also played Adams more than usual in Game 6, and he responded with five blocks in 21 minutes on Thursday. Brooks said Adams earned the increase in playing time with his hard work in practice and his improvement throughout the season. The game could come down to tempo. In Games 1 and 6, the two matchups with a quicker pace, the Thunder won by double digits. Memphis turned the other four games into slower-paced, grind-it-out overtime battles and won three of them. "It makes for great storylines, but it comes down to playing good basketball," Brooks said. "Executing on both ends, making shots along the way, just continuing to play together and understanding that theres going to be some runs by either team that you have to stay focused and stay together through, and just being committed to what we want to do each possession." Some notes from the first week of MLB action, including Blackmon, Solarte, Bonifacio, Belt, Eovaldi, K-Rod and more. Malik Hooker Womens Jersey . Charlie Blackmon, CF, Colorado - A 27-year-old who just surpassed 500 career plate appearances, Blackmon hit .309 with an .803 OPS in 82 games last season, and has opened this year with 13 hits in 24 at-bats (.542). As long as he hits, and a minor-league batting average of .309 with an .843 OPS in 2222 plate appearances is an indication that is a possibility, then Blackmon should stay ahead of Drew Stubbs in the Rockies outfield rotation. Josh Hamilton, LF, L.A. Angels of Anaheim - After last seasons flameout, Hamilton is an interesting rebound option in 2014. Remember, hes one season removed from 43 homers, 128 RBI and 103 runs scored for Texas. In the crazy small sample of the first week, Hamilton has at least been showing a touch more plate discipline, with 12.5% swinging strikes his lowest rate since his rookie year in 2007. Yangervis Solarte, 3B, N.Y. Yankees - 26-year-old rookie flew under the radar when the Yankees added veteran infielders Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts in the offseason, but Solarte hit .429, with a 1.061 OPS in the spring, hitting .282 with a .736 OPS at Triple-A over the past couple seasons. Hes off to a nice start (8-for-17, .471 AVG, 1.232 OPS) for the Yankees; certainly fortunate with a .500 batting average on balls in play, but also making a lot of contact, with only 2.7% swinging strikes. Chris Colabello, DH, Minnesota - The 30-year-old DH had his first major league plate appearances last year, when he hits .194 with a .631 OPS in 181 plate appearances for the Twins, but he mashed in the minors (24 HR, .352 AVG, 1.066 OPS in 89 GP at AAA last year) and is off to a strong start this year, leading the American League with 11 RBI while hitting .391 with a 1.112 OPS. Hes been more fortunate (.500 BABIP) than can be expected, but Colabello also has higher line-drive and flyball rate, with a lower groundball and infield flyball rate compared to last season. Xander Bogaerts, SS, Boston - Coming into the year as the leading candidate for AL Rookie of the Year, 21-year-old Bogaerts hasnt done anything to slow down that talk, hitting .381 with a .956 OPS, hitting fifth in the Red Sox lineup. Emilio Bonifacio, CF, Chicago Cubs - Its a wonder that a player with a .628 OPS over the previous two seasons would be playing regularly, but such is the situation with the Cubs, and 28-year-old Bonifacio is off to a blazing start, hitting .500 with a 1.120 OPS and tied for the MLB lead with four steals. Bonifacio has always been valuable on the bases, stealing 98 bases on 120 attempts (81.7%) in the previous three seasons, but he hasnt always been able to hit enough to hold down an everyday job. Mark Trumbo, LF, Arizona - Over the last three years, four players -- Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Beltre, Jose Bautista and Jay Bruce -- have hit more home runs than Trumbos 95, and hes crushed five in nine games to start the year. Trumbo, whose outfield defence is not a strength, is hitting enough that he wont have any concerns over playing time. Brandon Belt, 1B, San Francisco - The progress has been steady, if sometimes slow, for the 25-year-old first baseman, but Belt has mashed four home runs early. Not to rain on his parade, since Belt is a nice breakout candidate, but hes been unusually aggressive at the plate early, seeing fewer pitches per plate appearance (3.65) than his standard (3.96 for his career) and hasnt walked once in 31 plate appearances. Yovani Gallardo, RHP, Milwaukee - Responsible for murdering fantasy teams (including one of my own) last season, when he had a career-high 4.18 ERA, Gallardo emerged unscathed from his first two starts. Dont get too carried away with the praise, however, as his strikeout rate (seven in 12 2/3 IP) is way low and hes been fortunate enough to strand every runner thats reached base against him. Nate Eovaldi, RHP, Miami - A 3.46 ERA in two starts is nice for the 24-year-old, but there are more promising results in underlying numbers. For one thing, Eovaldi has been a hard thrower who struggled to miss bats in the past and his average fastball is still up near 96 MPH, but hes missed more bats, and his 14 strikeouts in 13 innings (9.7 K/9) is far better than the 179 strikeouts in 260 1/3 innings (6.4 K/9) to start his career. Francisco Rodriguez, RHP, Milwaukee - The 32-year-old received the early closing opportunities for the Brewers, while they waited for Jim Henderson to find his form. Even without great velocity, K-Rod has six strikeouts in three innings, with a couple of saves, so its not like the Brewers figure to be rushing him out of the role. Pedro Strop, RHP, Chicago Cubs - A 28-year-old journeyman with four career saves entering the year, Strop is pushing Jose Veras, who has six walks in 1 2/3 innings, for the closers role with the Cubs. Strop throws hard enough, though hes been slider-heavy in the early going this year. Jose Valverde, RHP, N.Y. Mets - With word that Bobby Parnell is undergoing Tommy John surgery, the Mets closer role is open for 36-year-old Valverde, who busted out of the role in Detroit last season after allowing six home runs in 19 1/3 IP. With six strikeouts in 3 1/3 IP, Valverde is off to a good start in that spot, but has spent a career walking the high wire as a closer who rarely makes it look easy. Charles and Avery were ruled out for the rest of the game, while cornerback Brandon Flowers was considered questionable as he underwent evaluation for a concussion. Charles was hurt on his third carry of the game and stayed down on the ground for several minutes before walking off the field under his own power. Team trainers tended to him on the sideline, doing what appeared to be concussion tests, before walking with Charles into the locker room. Team officials later ruled out a return by their top offensive player. The sixth-year running baack led the AFC in rushing with 1,287 yards, and led the Chiefs (11-5) with 70 receptions for 693 yards and seven TDs. Marlon Mack Youth Jersey. Avery, who caught a 79-yard TD pass in the first half, was diagnosed with a concussion early in the second half and was ruled out of the game, too. He finished the day with three receptions against his former team. Then, as the Colts rallied in the third quarter, Flowers was injured on a 3-yard screen pass as he tried to prevent Donald Brown from scoring a touchdown. The Flames attempt to build off their latest comeback effort on Monday night as they play host to a Winnipeg Jets club in danger of matching its longest losing streak of the season. Calgary is coming off its league-leading ninth victory of the season in which it trailed after two periods. In danger of falling to the lowly Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, the Flames scored four times in the third period to rally for a 4-2 win. Lance Bouma scored twice, while Paul Byron and Sean Monahan also scored. Mikael Backlund and David Jones had two assists each, and Jonas Hiller made 17 saves in his clubs sixth victory in eight games. We generate confidence from all those comebacks that we do, Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said. We never quit, and we knew that once we got one, wed get going. Monahans goal kept the forward in great form as of late, with the second-year skater having tallied five goals and two assists over his past seven games. Jiri Hudler did not play on Saturday due to illness and is questionable for this game. Winnipeg, though, has taken two straight in Calgary after losing each of its first six trips to the city. The Jets hope to snap a three-game slide tonight as special teams hurt them in a 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday. Four of the five goals Winnipeg allowed were on Dallas power plays, while the Jets failed to score on their two chances on the man advantage. Andrew Ladd and Toby Enstrom scored for the Jets, who have lost three straight for the first time since a season-high four-game slide from Oct. 11-19. Michael Hutchinson gave up all five goals on 32 shots. I dont think were executing as well as we were, said Jets forward Mathieu Perreault. Like I said, they got some good players on the power play. Winnipeg, a current wild card holder, is four points behind the Chicago Blackhawks for third place in the Central Division and will also visit the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. With Hutchinson having made a rare second straight start on Saturday, Ondrej Pavelec appears to be the likely starter for this game. He is 1-3-0 lifetime versus the Flames with a 3.55 GAA and .861 save percentage in four meetings. The 2014 NHL trade deadline has come and gone and all thats left is to pick apart the 20 trades made with 38 players changing ad

Posted in IYH Forums by jokergreen0220 at 10:15, Jul 14 2017

The 2014 NHL trade deadline has come and gone and all thats left is to pick apart the 20 trades made with 38 players changing addresses. Jonnu Smith Jersey . Some teams got significantly better, some teams divested themselves of talent and some teams had quiet afternoons, keeping the status quo. But you cant really pick winners or losers, yet. Last year, the Pittsburgh Penguins were declared the winners of the deadline when they brought in both Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow. While both played well for their new clubs, the Penguins were overmatched and dominated in a sweep by the Boston Bruins, the team Iginila spurned to join the Penguins, in the Eastern Conference finals with the team falling well short of their goal of winning the Stanley Cup. The Ottawa Senators alleviated a logjam in net at the 2013 deadline when they sent Ben Bishop to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Cory Conacher. Conacher, at the time, was second in rookie scoring and the Sens hoped that he could bring some jump to its second line, while identifying Bishop as the odd man out in a crowded crease that also included Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner. Flash forward one year and Bishop is starring in net for the Lightning, third in the league in wins with a sterling 2.09 GAA and a .931 save percentage. The lanky goaltender is certainly at the forefront of the Vezina conversation with his team firmly ensconced in a playoff position. Conacher, on the other hand, struggled mightily in his first full season with the Senators, finding himself unable to replicate his rookie season success and enduring a 30-game goalless drought. Waived by the team, Conacher was claimed on Wednesday by the Buffalo Sabres, reuniting him with Tim Murray and taking him back to the city where he went to school at Canisius. Obviously, with draft picks and prospects in play, the full ramifications of trades wont be felt for years down the road, but we can assess the immediate impact of todays movement. With big names like Ryan Miller and Roberto Luongo moved prior to Wednesdays deadline, Thomas Vanek was the highest profile player to switch jerseys when the New York Islanders shipped the Austrian sniper to the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs pursuit of Vanek was somewhat of a clandestine one, having not been heavily attached to Vanek in the days leading up to the deadline like the Los Angeles Kings or Pittsburgh Penguins were. Vaneks potential payoff for the Canadiens is obvious. At 62, Vanek becomes one of the teams bigger fowards and his soft hands should instantly help a team looking for more scoring punch. Eclipsing the 20-goal mark in every one of his nine NHL seasons (including this one), the 30-year-old pending free agent makes the Canadiens power play a much scarier proposition. Sacrificing only a (conditional) second-round pick in 2014 and Swedish forward prospect Sebastian Collberg to acquire Vanek (and a conditional fifth-round pick) has to be viewed as nothing short of a coup for the Habs and general manager Marc Bergevin. Whether or not Vanek, who reportedly turned down a substantial extension offer from the Islanders in February, is retained long term will be a bridge to cross down the line. And what of the team that dealt Vanek in the Islanders? Looking at things strictly from an asset standpoint, general manager Garth Snow took a bath on Vanek and his bold acquisition of the player in October didnt turn out nearly the way Snow intended. Vanek, acquired from the Buffalo Sabres, cost the Islanders three-time 30-goal-scorer Matt Moulson, their 2014 first-round pick and a second-rounder in 2015. Though Moulson is an impending free agent himself, the cost to bring in Vanek was immense and with the Islanders slim playoff hopes effectively torpedoed by the season-ending injury to John Tavares at the Olympics, Snow did not come close to recouping the assets he expended. While Collberg might one day be an effective NHL scorer, its hard not to view the Islanders Thomas Vanek experiment as a failure. With both Vanek and Andrew MacDonald, who was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, turning down lucrative extensions and eventually leaving town, questions will certainly be asked of Snow and his long term future in the GMs office. If the Islanders failed at asset management this week, Murray and the Sabres excelled. In the past six days, the Sabres turned Moulson, Miller, Steve Ott, Brayden McNabb, Cody McCormick, two second-rounders, a third-round pick and the newly acquired Jaroslav Halak into Chris Stewart, Michal Neuvirth, Rostislav Klesla, prospects William Carrier, Hudson Fasching and Nicolas Deslauriers, Torrey Mitchell and three picks (a first and a pair of seconds). In the next two drafts, the Sabres have a staggering 10 picks in the first two rounds. This is coupled with a tremendous amount of cap flexibility going forward. While the Sabres might suffer in the short term and details have yet to emerge on Pat LaFontaines surprise resignation on Saturday, Murray has seemingly positioned his team to properly retool in an attempt to re-emerge as an Eastern Conference contender. The days one blockbuster saw an exchange of captains as the Tampa Bay Lightning shipped Martin St. Louis to the New York Rangers for Ryan Callahan. The writing was on the wall for St. Louis and the Lightning. Having been left off Canadas initial Olympic roster, despite eventually playing for the gold medal-winning team, St. Louiss relationship with general manager Steve Yzerman seemed to sour and a quick divorce both appeared to be on the horizon and was likely the best choice for both parties. St. Louis cited familial reasons for his trade request (he lives in nearby Connecticut), but dealing the franchises captain and talisman cant sit well with Lightning fans. Still, Yzerman did well in his acquisition of Callahan. Perhaps not as offensively talented as reigning Art Ross-winner St. Louis and unlikely to immediately replicate St. Louiss chemistry with the returning Steven Stamkos, Callahan quickly fills the Lightnings leadership void and gives the team cap flexibility going forward and the ability to re-sign Callahan if both parties so choose. On top of that, Yzerman was able to procure a first-rounder in 2015 and a second in this summers draft that could turn into a first if the Rangers can advance to the Eastern Conference finals. Though Callahans contract negotiations and lack of movement between the two sides were well publicized in the days and weeks heading up to the deadline, the trade still came as a bitter pill for the player. If Callahans agent, Stephen Bartlett, is to be believed, the Rangers and Callahan could have bridged that gap "with about one conversation," but the U.S. Olympian finds himself in an advantageous situation. The Lightning are looking likely to be a playoff team and Callahan knows that if he performs well during the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs, hell be in good position to name his price this offseason in a relatively weak free agent crop. Coincidentally, the last time the Rangers traded their captain was in 2003 when the Blueshirts sent the negotiation rights to impending free agent Mark Messier to the San Jose Sharks. In return, they received a fourth-round pick in 2004. With that pick, the Rangers selected Ryan Callahan. Other teams impressed on Wednesday. The Ottawa Senators turned a third and fifth-round picks into Ales Hemsky from the Edmonton Oilers, who will also retain half of Hemskys salary. The talent of Hemsky has never been in question, but his durability has almost always been an issue. If the Senators, who also managed to re-sign Chris Phillips for two more years, can harness some of Hemskys offensive potency, the team will have added a quality top-six forward (and a likely winger for Jason Spezza) in their push for a playoff spot. For Hemsky, the rest of this season can act as an audition for the Senators, who have the room to sign him long term at seasons end. The Los Angeles Kings addressed their scoring deficiencies in acquiring Marian Gaborik from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Gaborik represents a high risk, high reward proposition as the team sacrificed Matt Frattin and there is certainly some concern about how the mercurial Gaborik will fare under Darryl Sutter. But with the Blue Jackets absorbing half of Gaboriks salary, this could be a masterstroke by Dean Lombardi if the Slovakian comes up firing. Halak has always played his best hockey when never firmly established as a go-to number one goaltender and forced to compete for playing time like he did in Montreal with Carey Price and in St. Louis with Brian Elliott. The Washington Capitals are hoping that history will repeat itself after acquiring the Slovakian from the Sabres. Currently on the outside of the playoff picture looking in, general manager George McPhee and Adam Oates hope that a healthy rivalry between Halak and incumbent Braden Holtby will be the tonic to lift the Capitals into the post-season. Some other clubs raised eyebrows, but not necessarily in a good way. Ryan Kesler remained a Vancouver Canuck. A day after trading Roberto Luongo, general manager Mike Gillis did not pull the trigger on his (reportedly) wantaway winger to complete a drastic facelift on his team that is currently on the periphery of the playoff picture. Still, its not the end of the world for the Canucks as, if they choose to trade Kesler at some point in the offseason, he will still command a significant return since he is signed for two more seasons at a very attractive $5 million cap hit. That said, more than just Keslers future is likely to come under the microscope come this offseason even if the team pulls out a playoff spot. The Canucks core isnt getting any younger and its perhaps time to confront the reality that the teams window to contend is close to being sealed shut. Keslers staying in Vancouver rippled throughout the rest of the league. Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray clearly thought that his club was in position to land the player and was left "confused" by his inability to do so. The Ducks day, then, seemed incomplete and its hard to argue that the team is better than it was on Tuesday after it dealt Dustin Penner to the Washington Capitals and goaltender Viktor Fasth to the Oilers, compromising some of the teams depth. Other than dealing Reto Berra to the Colorado Avalanche and Lee Stempniak to the Penguins, the Calgary Flames stayed surprisingly quiet. Most notably, Mike Cammalleri stayed put in Calgary. An unrestricted free agent at seasons end, its highly unlikely that Cammalleri will remain with the Flames beyond this April, so it comes as a bit of a shock that Brian Burke didnt parlay Cammalleri into picks or prospects. LONDON - Chelsea says Michael Essien has left the club to join AC Milan, ending the Ghana midfielders 8 1/2-year stint at Stamford Bridge. Fabian Moreau Jersey . The Premier League team made the announcement on Monday without disclosing any financial or contract details. At one time one of the worlds top midfielders, the 31-year-old Essien has lost his first-team place in recent years and spent last season on loan at Real Madrid. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says "we would have been happy had he stayed because he is fantastic player for the team, but hes given everything for the club and a great chance arrived for his future." Essien made 256 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Lyon in 2005. But the Canadian defensive back, who signed a three-year contract with Hamilton after spending his first three CFL seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, promises hell bring his winning attitude to a team he feels is already on a roll. "I want to bring some leadership to the team," said the 25-year-old native of London, Ont., and former Western Ontario Mustangs star. Its probably best to keep the ring under wraps. It would only rub salt in a wound after Hamilton lost the championship game 45-23 to the Roughriders. Butler was a big part of their success. He led the Grey Cup champions last season with 60 tackles and also had four interceptions and is happy to list his strengths. "Experience. Versatility. Passion. I love this game," he said. "Its my job but I love it more than anything. "Im going to bring that to practice every single day and a winning attitude." Butler was among the three free-agent signings Hamilton unveiled Thursday. The others included: defensive back Brandon Stewart from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and offensive lineman Steve Myddelton from the B.C. Lions. Hamilton has also signed import receiver Cary Koch from the Edmonton Eskimos and former Roughriders linebacker Abraham. The club re-signed Canadian linebacker Marc Beswick, the East Divisions top special-teams player last year, just before he was set to hit the open market Tuesday. And prior to the start of free agency, the Ticats signed quarterback Zach Collaros, who spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts before being released by the CFL club. But Butler was a big catch for Hamilton as well. He acknowledged it was hard leaving Saskatchewan, the team that drafted him in the second round, 12th overall and where he got that Grey Cup ring. But he said there were several factors that drew him to Hamilton, including the success they had last year in making it too the championship game. Ryan Anderson Redskins Jersey. He points to the coaches, locker room, overall organization and the teams new stadium thats scheduled to open in July. Butler has shown versatility on defence — four different positions since his university days — and says he doesnt care where he plays. "I like winning. I mean I like wanting to win championships and thats really my main goal," he said. "Wherever they play me Im happy with it. As long as Im on the field and Im making plays and contributing, Im all good with it." Stewart and Myddelton also say they feel theyve joined a winning organization. Stewart, 27, who has spent the past five seasons with Winnipeg, also brings versatility to the defence. While hes excited about playing with Butler, Stewart cant wait to perform for for Austin and defensive co-ordinator Orlondo Steinauer, a fellow Seattle native. "Hes going to make my game a lot better," Stewart said of Steinauer. The veteran says Hamilton is a good fit. "And maybe (Ill) bring a little attitude to the field, a little energy," he said. He started all 18 games for Winnipeg last year, recording 47 defensive tackles and 16 special-teams tackles and one interception. Myddelton, 27, will add experience to an offensive line missing its centre and leader in Marwan Hage, selected by Ottawa in the expansion draft, and Peter Dyakowski, who will miss much of next season due to knee surgery. "They have holes to fill, and thats my job now," said the six-foot-three, 305-pound native of Barrie, Ont. Hes entering his fifth CFL season (3 1/2 with Calgary before he was traded to B.C. midway through last year). He says being close to home and playing for a well-respected coaching staff drew him to the Ticats. "The success the team had last year under the adverse circumstances they had (playing at the University of Guelph), I think this team is headed in the right direction and Im excited to be a part of that," he said. Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork. Marlon Humphrey Womens Jersey .com) - Devin Booker scored 18 points and top- ranked Kentucky put forth a dominating defensive effort to stay unbeaten with a 58-43 victory over South Carolina on Saturday. Aaron Harrison added 13 points for the Wildcats (19-0, 6-0 SEC), who held South Carolina to just 22.6 percent from the field and blocked nine shots. Kentucky is off to its best start since the 2009-10 squad also opened the season with 19 straight wins. Sindarius Thornwell was South Carolinas lone player in double figures with 14 points. The Gamecocks (10-8, 1-5) have lost three straight and five of their last six games. Final Score: (11) Kansas 75, (17) Texas 62 Austin, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Cliff Alexander led four Jayhawks in double figures with 15 points and No. 11 Kansas played a clean second half to take down 17th-ranked Texas 75-62 for a key road victory that could help determine the Big-12 regular season. Perry Ellis and Brannen Greene scored 14 points apiece and Frank Mason III had 12 for Kansas, which committed all three of its season-low three turnovers in the first half. Alexander scored all of his points and grabbed all nine of his rebounds in the final 21:54 of the game. Kansas (16-3, 5-1 Big 12) has won two straight since dropping a road game against Iowa State. The Cyclones, who are in action this afternoon against Texas Tech, also have one conference loss. The Jayhawks have won or held a share of a remarkable 10 straight Big 12 regular-season crowns, but many believed Texas had a chance to threaten that run this season. Isaiah Taylor had 23 points to pace the Longhorns (14-5, 3-3), who have dropped three of their last five games. Final Score: (15) North Carolina 78, Florida State 74 Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Brice Johnson posted 18 points and 14 rebounds as 15th-ranked North Carolina kept up its strong recent play with a 78-74 victory over Florida State. Marcus Paige added 19 points and Justin Jackson put up 14 in the Tar Heels ninth triumph in their last 10 outings. North Carolina (16-4, 6-1 ACC) will take a five-game win streak into a difficult upcoming stretch against Syracuse, Louisville and No. 2 Virginia. Florida State (10-10, 2-5) hung tough for most of the afternoon, with Xavier Rathan-Mayes career-high 35 points keeping the Seminoles in it, before ultimately being dealt its fourth loss in its last five in ACC play. Final Score: (1 West Virginia 86, TCU 85 (OT) Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Staten and Devin Williams each scored 18 points, and the 18th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers survived a wild overtime period to beat the TCU Horned Frogs 86-85 on Saturday. With seven seconds to go in the extra period, Daxter Miles Jr. hit a go-ahead 3- point shot for the Mountaineers to give them their first lead since regulation, but Trey Zeigler put TCU back on top with a second left. Jevon Carter got behind the defense on the inbounds pass, and after being fouled attempting a layup as time expired, hit a pair of free throws to send West Virginia to the win. Williams pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, and Staten handed out 12 assists. Jonathan Holton added 15 points and eight boards for the Mountaineers (16-3, 4-2 Big 12). TCU (14-5, 1-5) received a game-high 22 points from Kyan Anderson, but it was his foul that sent Carter to the line for the winning free throws. Charles Hill Jr. chipped in 13 points, and Kenrich Williams and Amric Fields each contributed 11. Final Score: Purdue 67, (25) Iowa 63 West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Rapheal Davis scored a career-high 24 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer in the final minute, and Purdue got a boost from seldom-used wing Basil Smotherman to knock off No. 25 Iowa on Saturday, 67-63. With Kendall Stephens left hand heavily wrapped because of a broken finger, Smotherman saw extended minutes and took advantage, providing 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and pulling down the games two biggest defensive rebounds. Purdue held a two-point lead following Davis 3 with 50 seconds remaining, and Smotherman flew in to grab Mike Gesells missed jumper at the other end. After he split a pair from the foul line, Peter Jok launched a triple and again Smotherman went up high to haul it in. He made 1-of-2 from the line once more, producing the final tally. Purdues center tandem of A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas added 23 points between them on 9-of-11 from the field. The win snaps a 13-game losing streak against ranked teams for Purdue (12-8, 4-3 Big Ten). Iowa nearly overcame the loss of star forward Aaron White thanks to late heroics by Gesell and a dominant effort on the glass, but ultimately fell short. White, Iowas leading scorer and rebounder, left the game in the first half with a right shoulder stinger. Gesell scored 12 of his 18 points in the games final six minutes, and Gabriel Olaseni pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end. Iowa (13-7, 4-3) had 24 offensive rebounds as a team. Tyus Bowser Ravens Jersey . MONTREAL -- The throng of 46,121 at Olympic Stadium were rooting more for the defunct Montreal Expos, but they stood and cheered the Toronto Blue Jays just the same. Custom Nuggets Jersey . Pinch hitter Ricardo Nanita singled with two out in the ninth to lift the Blue Jays to a 5-4 victory over the New York Mets on a Friday night that was part exhibition baseball, part tribute to former Expos and Mets catcher Gary Carter and part appeal to the world to bring baseball back to Montreal. It was the first game at the Big O since the Expos farewell game on Sept. 24, 2004, before they moved to Washington, D.C. to become the Nationals. The teams will play again on Saturday afternoon, when the Expos 1994 team will be feted. Carters widow Sandy and daughter Kimmy were on hand with his ex-teammates Tim Raines, Steve Rogers and Warren Cromartie for a pre-game tribute to perhaps the most popular player in Expos history. He also played for and won a World Series in 1986 with the Mets. "The city always embraced Gary, and us as a family" Sandy Carter said afterwards. "I really felt that tonight. We made it our home and felt privileged to be here for 11 years." Carter died of brain cancer at age 57 in 2012. The City of Montreal named a street after him outside the Expos original home, Jarry Park. "He was a great teammate, a great player, a great competitor," said Raines, a roving outfield instructor for the Blue Jays. "Him and Andre Dawson taught me the meaning of playing the game. "If I didnt listen to him, Andre Dawson would slap me upside the head." Many other former players and management personnel were on hand to see the Blue Jays come back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the seventh and win it in the ninth. Fans chanted Lets Go Expos throughout most of the game, but all were on their feet for the final inning trying to will the Blue Jays to victory. Munenori Kawasaki opened the ninth with a double and scored from third as Nanita singled up the middle. Jeremy Jeffress pitched the final two innings for the win. Mets third baseman David Wright, a rookie in 2004, called it a fun night. "It brought back a bunch of memories for me," said Wright. "My first road trip in the big leagues was to Montreal, my first home run was in Montreal, so it was nice today to reminisce as bit. "Its nice for us to be able to come up here and break up spring training a bit, because it gets a little boring down there (in Florida). To come up to a great city with an obviously hungry fan base -- its kind of like a dress rehearsal for us. Youve got the big crowd, you get a little more excited than at a normal spring training game. "Its good practice for Monday (the Mets season opener against the Nationals)." The Mets scored two in the fourth off Jays starter Mark Buehrle on Chris Youngs two-run double. Toronto got one back in the fourth on Jose Bautistas home run, but Ruben Tejada doubled and scored on Daniel Murphys two-bagger off Casey Janssen in the fifth. Former Blue Jays prospect Travis dArnaud led off the seventh with a home run, but Edwin Encarnacion tied it with a two-run single in the seventh off Gonzalez Germen. Encarnacion was tagged out in a rundown after the runners scored. Cromartie leads a movement called the Montreal Baseball Project that is working to get a team back in Montreal, even though estimates are that it would cost more than $1 billion for a team and a new ballpark. The Expos, who became Canadas first major league team in 1969, moved to Washington to become the Nationals in 2004 after a decade of fire sales of top players, dwindling attendance and timid ownership. Cromartie and others are trying to revive baseball interest. They called on Montreal fans to turn out in large numbers to the pre-season games to show that the city will support baseball. "If people think there are no fans here -- you see tonight, the support is here," said Raines. "I think it would be good," said Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie, a native of Langley, B.C. "If the fans show up -- that would be the telling tale. You need that support. But it would be good for Canada." The Mets are old Expos rivals, but the crowd was behind the Jays from the start. There was a big ovation for a diving defensive play by Lawrie in the third and another an inning later for Bautistas homer. But in the stands, there were periodic chants of Lets Go Expos, just like in the old days. The Blue Jays open the season on Tuesday in Tampa Bay, so the trip north from Florida spring training actually took them out of their way. But no one complained of playing in front of huge, supportive crowd. "To be honest, Id rather stay in Florida, but its good for Canada," said Lawrie. "We can suck it up. Its good energy." Buehrle gave up two earned runs and four hits in four innings. Kenneth Faried Jersey . -- Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice tweeted an apparent goodbye after a report about his pending release. Will Barton Jersey . Now the Minnesota Vikings have set their sights on soccer.(Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers have picked an awful time to play their worst baseball of the season. On Tuesday, the Rangers try to stop a seven-game losing streak and remain in the postseason mix when they play the second of four straight games against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Texas struggles continued on Monday, as Alex Cobb threw eight strong innings to lead Tampa Bay to a 6-2 win. Wil Myers hit a solo homer and had three RBI and Ben Zobrist reached base four times with three hits and a walk for the Rays, who remained atop the AL wild card standings with their fourth win in five games. The Rangers were tied for the wild card lead with Tampa Bay coming into the game but fell to 2-12 in their last 14 games. Cobb (9-3) struck out 10, walked one and gave up two runs and six hits. The Rays won for the first time in his last five starts. "At this point of the season, and with the position were in, every game is going to get bigger. Yesterday was the biggest game of the season, today is the biggest game of the season, tomorrow will be the biggest game of the season. I dont think its unfair to say that. We realize the performance we have to put together out there every night. I think were up for it," Cobb said. Matt Garza (3-5) was charged with six runs in 4 11/3 innings in his first-ever start against his former team. Kenneth Faried Nuggets Jersey. Garza, who pitched for Rays from 2008-10, gave up eight hits and two walks and struck out three. Garza made his first appearance at Tropicana Field since the Rays dealt him to the Cubs on Jan. 8, 2011. "Im not frustrated and Im confused," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Im trying to figure out what we have to do to jump-start this offense." Heading to the hill for the Rangers on Tuesday will be right-hander Alexi Ogando, who is 6-4 with a 3.23 earned run average in 19 games (15 starts) this season. Ogando has not started since Aug. 13, making four relief appearances this month since coming off the disabled list. He has thrown six scoreless innings over that time, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out five. Ogando is 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in nine career meetings with the Rays, including two starts. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, will counter with righty Jeremy Hellickson, who is 11-8 with a 5.04 ERA. Hellickson did not get a decision on Thursday against Boston, as he allowed three runs and four hits in 5 1/3 frames of his teams 4-3 win. Hellickson has faced the Rangers three times and is 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA. Texas has split its four matchups with the Rays this season. PITTSBURGH -- All eyes were supposed to be on Gregory Polanco. Yaya Toure Jersey . But thanks to his new-found success against left-handed pitchers, Anthony Rizzo stole the show. Rizzo homered, doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead the Chicago Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 Tuesday night, spoiling Polancos much-anticipated debut. Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the first inning off lefty Francisco Liriano, who came out in the fourth with discomfort on his right side. Rizzo also doubled and scored in the fourth and hit an RBI double in the seventh, a drive to deep right-centre that struck Polancos left wrist as the touted Pirates rookie tried to make the catch. Rizzo has five home runs and a .344 batting average in 61 at-bats against left-handers this season. Last year, he batted .189 with seven homers against southpaws in 189 at-bats. "I feel more comfortable against them now and its the best Ive ever hit left-handers at any level," Rizzo said. "I dont know if Ill ever figure lefties out -- or right-handers, either -- but I do feel confident against them." Rizzo has every reason to feel confident. He has five homers in his last 10 games, raising his season total to 13. "You can talk about mechanics and scouting reports and everything else, but the biggest thing in this game is confidence," Rizzo said. "If you step into the batters box with confidence, then youre giving yourself a much better chance to hit." Polanco went 1 for 5 after getting called up from Triple-A Indianapolis, where the right fielder was leading the International League with a .347 batting average and 49 RBIs in 62 games. "It was a lot of fun," he said. "It was exciting. I was a little nervous at first but then I relaxed and had fun." Pinch-hitter Luis Valbuenas two-run double off Casey Sadler (0-1) broke a 3-all tie in the sixth and put Chicago ahead for good. Travis Wood (6-5) allowed three runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. "It was a grind at times but I got through it," Wood said. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer for the Pirates, his ninth of the season and fifth in nine June games. Valbuena and Junior Lake each had two hits for the Cubs, as did Pittsburghs Russell Martin and Starling Marte. Rizzo scored on a single by Starlin Castro in the seventh to push Chicagos lead to 7-3. Rizzos homer put the Cubs up 2-0, but the Pirates tied it on McCutchens drive in the third. In the top of the fourth, Rizzo led off with a double and scored on Darwin Barneys double. Pittsburgh tied it again in the bottom half on pinch-hitter Jose Tabatas RBI double. "Rizzos blast there in the first inning kind of got us rolling and we did a good job of adding on runs after that," Chicago manager Rick Renteria said. Liriano allowed two runs in three-plus innings. He bent over and held his back after throwing a pitch to Rizzo, then left the mound after a few warmup pitches. After leading the Pirates with 16 wins last season, Liriano has struggled this year. He is 1-6 with a 4.60 ERA in 14 starts. Liriano will almost certainly miss his scheduled start Sunday in Miami and could land on the disabled list. Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole (right shoulder fatigue) went on the DL on Sunday and second baseman Neil Walker (appendectomy) followed him Tuesday. NOTES: The Cubs released RHP Jose Veras, one week after designating him for assignment. He was 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in 12 relief appearances while going 0 for 2 on save chances. ... Pittsburgh 3B Pedro Alvarez got the night off. He is 1 for 18 against Wood. ... Chicago RHP Jason Hammel (6-3, 2.53 ERA) is scheduled to start Wednesday night against RHP Brandon Cumpton (1-2, 6.51). Since the current divisional format began in 1995 there have been 46 teams who have gone ahead 2-0 in a Division Series and only five have lost the series. However, the last team to do it was the 2012 Giants, who, of course, went on to win the World Series. Yeah, it can be done, Washington manager Matt Williams said Sunday. It can certainly be done. You have to start with the first one. It may be a tall order, though, against a Giants team that has won an NL- record 10 straight postseason games and will be throwing their ace, Madison Bumgarner, in front of what should be a raucous crowd. Bumgarner has already left his mark on this postseason, throwing a four-hit shutout to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the wild card game. If there was no Clayton Kershaw we may very well be talking about an NL Cy Young Award for Bumgarner, who set career-high marks in wins (1 and strikeouts (219) this season and pitched to a 2.98 ERA. We are confident with Bum on the mound on Monday, said Giants first baseman Brandon Belt. Definitely not taking it for granted. We have seen teams come back down from 0-2 and win the series. We are going to go in there and try to play our best baseball. If we dont, they will take advantage of it. While Bumgarner was one of the best road pitchers in the league this season, he was quite ordinary at home, going 7-6 with a 5.03 ERA in 15 starts. In seven starts versus the Nationals, hes pitched to a 2.60 ERA. This will be Bumgarners ninth career postseason appearance. He is 4-2 with a 3.02 ERA. As boring as it sounds, youve got to treat it like any other game, he said. For me, its fun and exciting to go out there and get amped up and pumped up for the game. But for me, and a lot of people, when you do that, you dont play as good of baseball as you should. So its important to push all the nerves and anxiety and excitement aside and just play good, fundamentally sound baseball. Washington, meanwhile, will be throwing a postseason stalwart of its own in Doug Fister, who actually matched up against Bumgarner in the 2012 World Series as a member of the Detroit Tigers. Fister is no stranger to October baseball, as Mondays start will be his 17th postseason appearance. A surprise injury replacement during his postseason debut in 2011, Fister has gone 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 15 October games, all with the Tigers. Its definitely a benefit with having some experience, Fister said. But it just comes down to executing, and that is a big thing. These guys have played well forr a long time and they are on quite a roll. Montravius Adams Youth Jersey. But at the same time, we have been backed into a corner before. Weve been through a lot of ups and downs, and I think thats something thats definitely going to help us here where were down 0-2. Fister missed the first month of the season with a lat strain, but eventually enjoyed the best statistical season of his career, going 16-5 with a 2.20 ERA over his final 24 starts. The righty also walked a total of just 24 batters in those games. We dont have a choice now, Williams said. It is a must-win (game) for us. Then we must win Game 4 and hopefully get it back to (Washington). That is all we can do at this point. San Francisco moved to the brink of its third NLCS appearance in five years with a thrilling 18-inning win on Saturday. Pablo Sandovals RBI double tied the game with two outs in the ninth inning, and Belts solo homer in the 18th gave the never-say-die Giants a 2-1 victory and spoiled what was an outstanding outing from the Nats Jordan Zimmermann. Belts leadoff blast off Tanner Roark (0-1) produced the deciding run in the longest game by time in postseason history. The real hero of the game may have been Giants reliever Yusmeiro Petit, who held the Nationals to a single hit over six scoreless innings in a splendid performance out of the bullpen I was trying to get as much as I could out of him, Bochy said. Just six days removed from throwing the first no-no in Nationals history, Zimmermann yielded just three hits and retired 20 straight hitters before being lifted after walking Joe Panik with two outs in the fateful ninth. Drew Storen promptly allowed a single to Buster Posey, then Sandoval followed with a double to score Panik with the tying run. Posey actually raced home on the play only to be thrown at home on a play that was confirmed via replay review. The Nats had their way with the Giants in the regular season, taking five out of seven games. TSNs Game Notes: * Madison Bumgarner has pitched 16 straight scoreless innings in the postseason, 4th-most in franchise history. In his last start a€“ a win over the Pirates in the NL Wild Card game, Bumgarner became just the third pitcher in postseason history to throw a shutout with double-digit strikeouts in a winner-take-all game (Justin Verlander, Sandy Koufax). * The Giants are heading home with their ace on the mound, but hes been a much better pitcher on the road this season. Madison Bumgarner This Season a€“ Including Postseason Home Road W-L 7-6 12-4 ERA 4.03 2.07 WHIP 1.24 0.95 Opp BA .260 .218 K/BB 4.2 6.4 * The Nationals are trying to stay alive to win a postseason series for the first time since the 1981 Montreal Expos beat the Phillies in the NLDS. * Washingtons Doug Fister finished the regular season strong, going 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA over his last 4 starts. INDIANAPOLIS -- NFL sacks champion Robert Mathis admits he made a mistake late last season. Tomas Hertl Sharks Jersey . Now its going to cost him -- four games and four paychecks. The Colts career sacks leader was suspended Friday by the NFL after violating the leagues ban on performance-enhancing substances. What exactly Mathis tested positive for remains a mystery but the linebacker said in a statement he was seeking fertility assistance. He acknowledged that he and his wife are expecting a baby. "I am deeply saddened that this situation will prevent me from contributing to my team for four games, and I regret that I didnt cross check what my doctor told me before I took the medication, " Mathis said. "I hope that my fans will understand the unique circumstances involved here and continue to know that I am a man of integrity who would never intentionally circumvent the performance enhancing substance policy agreed to by the NFL and my union." Mathis said Commissioner Roger Goodell denied Mathis request to not issue a suspension based on the circumstances. The league issued a statement Friday night about the case: "As Mr. Mathiss agent acknowledged today, his client failed to follow the protocols in the policy that the NFL and NFLPA agreed upon to address precisely these kinds of claims," the NFL said. "That policy also prescribes the disciplinary consequences of a positive test. The policy does not provide - nor should it provide - for the commissioner to override the policys procedures and assess discipline on an after-the-fact, ad hoc basis. Here Mr. Mathis actually withdrew his appeal and accepted discipline at the unions suggestion. His hearing took place only after the Players Association requested that the appeal be reinstated. "The drug for which Mr. Mathis tested positive is not approved by the FDA for fertility in males and is a performance-enhancing drug that has been prohibited for years. Importantly, Mr. Mathis did not consult with the policys independent administrator, a physician jointly approved by the NFL and NFL Players Association. Nor did he consult with his team doctor, the teams training staff, the NFLPA, the league office or the hotline established under the policy to give confidential information to players. Each of these sources would have warned against using this substance. "A cornerstone of the program is that a player is responsible for what is in his body. Consistent application of the policys procedures is critical to the integrity of the program." If the NFLs decision stands, and they almost always do, Mathis would not be eligible to rejoin the Colts until Sept. 29. He is allowed to participate in the teams off-season workouts, training camp and preseason games. The Colts quickly issued a statement saying they would support Mathis, one of the teams elder statesmen and most respected leaders. Mathis set a single-season record with 19 1/2 sacks last season and also broke Dwight Freeneys franchise career record for sacks. In 11 NFL seasons, Mathis has 111 career sacks. "We nevertheless wish to assure Robert and our fans that he remains an honoured and cherished member of the Colts family and that we support him as he deals with this difficult challenge," Mathis said. Its another black eye for a franchise whose owner, Jim Irsay, was arrested near his suburban Indy home in March and preliminarily charged with four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanour driving while intoxicated charge. Irsay sought medical help two days later and did not return to the team until last weekends draft. Irsay has not spoken publicly about what happened. Mathis was considered an undersized defensive end when the Colts took him in the fifth round of the 2003 draft. It didnt take long, though, for Mathis and Freeney to form one of the NFLs most feared pass-rushing combinations. With Mathis developing his own spin moves to match Freeney, and Freeney developing his own tomahawks chop, imitating Mathis, the two close friends not only put quarterbacks on the ground, they forced fumbles at the leagues highest rate, too. Both emerged as perennial Pro Bowlers, but when they were asked to move to linebacker in new coach Chuck Paganos 3-4 defence, Mathis thrived and Freeney struggled. When the Colts announced last year that they would not re-sign Freeney, many thought Mathis would struggle. Instead, he had the best season of his career and became the first winner of the Deacon Jones Award. Defending that title might be next to impossible in 2014 -- unless he wins an appeal. "We are thrilled that we will be welcoming a new (family) member in several months, but I apologize to my teammates, coaches and Colts fans that I will not be able to contribute to my team for the first four weeks of the 2014 season," Mathis said. "I will work extremely hard during that time to stay in top football shape and will be prepared to contribute immediately upon my return." Germanys Natalie Geisenberger won her fourth straight race with a combined two-run time of one minute 13.412 seconds for gold. "My second run wasnt as great as I wanted it to be," said Gough, who finished with a time of 1:13.545. "I had a few little skids here and there and (it) could have been a little bit better. I put it together and had two good, consistent runs and I had the performance I wanted. "It definitely confirms that what were doing in training and what were doing off the track and all of that is working." The 26-year-old from Calgary adds a silver to her trophy case alongside 10 other World Cup medals -- including two golds -- and two third-place finishes in world championships. Germanys Anke Wischnewski was third on Saturday night at the Whistler Sliding Centre with a time of 1:13.622. Gough was fourth last week in Winterberg, Germany, and won bronze in the first World Cup race of the season in Lillehammer, Norway, three weeks ago. She also won bronze at the 2013 world championship in Whistler. Geisenbergger won gold in womens singles at last seasons world championship after taking bronze at the 2010 Olympics on the same track. Chris Tierney Jersey. "My sled is good. My start is good," said Geisenberger, who holds the track record. "The line is nearly perfect." Gough, who will be among the Canadians looking to win the countrys first-ever Olympic luge medal at the Sochi Games, said Geisenberger is in the zone right now. "Shes just on right now. Shes doing so well and shes sliding really well," said Gough. "Im just going to keep chasing and keep trying to catch her at the start and down the start. "Always hoping to be on the top (of the podium) but Im definitely happy with the performance that I had and the result that I produced." Canadians Kimberley McRae, Arianne Jones, Jordan Smith, also all from Calgary, finished 11th, 14th and 17th, respectively. The team relay went later Saturday. Notes: Park City, Utah, will host the second of two North American stops on the World Cup luge schedule next week. ... PITTSBURGH -- Less than seven weeks after sustaining a stroke, Kris Letang was cleared to practice with the Pittsburgh Penguins and will join the team for practice Monday. Mason Raymond Jersey . Letang, who has not played since a Jan. 29 stroke and resulting discovery of a small hole in his heart, has been taken off blood thinner medication. The defenceman has missed the past 14 games. "He still has some other things to go through (before returning to game action)," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said, "but we knew that this was the six-week mark (since the stroke diagnosis) and there was a chance. Hes been working out, hes been skating and doing quite a bit on his own." A Norris Trophy finalist as the leagues top defenceman last season, Letang signed an eight-year, $58 million contract extension last summer. He has 10 goals and eight assists in 34 games this season. Letang did not skate at all for more than four weeks after the stroke and was not skating vigorously until this past week. Kevin Bieksa Jersey . Johnson shared an update after his surgery Tuesday on Twitter. He also wrote, "now lets get on the grind." The running back told The Tennessean he was having surgery in Pensacola, Fla. Sami Vatanen Ducks Jersey . However, the 38-year-old is in no hurry to sign with another team. "Im not in a rush. This will be my last contract, so I want to do it right," said Burris on Thursday.WASHINGTON -- Doug Fister pitched eight shutout innings, and Anthony Rendon had three hits and two RBI for the Washington Nationals, who beat the Atlanta Braves 3-0 victory on Saturday night. Washington took a half-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East after dropping the first two games in the series. Ryan Zimmerman also drove in a run for the Nationals. Coming off his second loss of the season, Fister (6-2) allowed five hits -- three over his final seven innings -- with three strikeouts and one walk. Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 16th save. Rendons RBI single in the third gave Washington its first lead of the series and his run-scoring double in the seventh made it 3-0. Braves starter Julio Teheran (6-5) struck out a season-high 10 batters. He allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings. Atlanta had won five straight against the Nationals, seven of eight this season, and was 20-7 since the start of the 2013 campaign. Braves catcher Evan Gattis extended his major-league leading hitting streak to 20 games with a sixth-inning single. Fister and Teheran lived up to the hype and locked up in a pitchers duel. Teemu Selanne Jersey. Fister, who has won six of seven starts, has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of nine starts this season. Atlanta had back-to-back one-out singles in the first inning, but Fister fought back. He got out of the jam and started a streak of nine straight batters retired. He didnt allow another hit until the fifth inning in front of a sellout crowd. Teheran, who frequently stepped off the mound during his outing, struck out the side in the fifth inning. After walking Adam LaRoche in the sixth, and with a 1-0 count on Zimmerman, Teheran again shuffled around on the mound, and was called for a balk. Two pitches later, Zimmermans single drove home LaRoche. NOTES: Justin Upton went 0 for 3 in his return to Atlantas starting lineup. The left fielder missed three games due to dizziness caused by "a real bad case of allergies," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ... Zimmerman entered Saturday batting .197 since returning from the disabled list on June 3. ... RHP Ervin Santana (5-4, 4.12) will pitch the series finale for Atlanta on Sunday against RHP Tanner Roark (6-4, 2.85).
