Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton told reporters after practice on Tuesday that he has decided not to appeal his 15-game NHL suspension to an independent arbitrator. Wesley Woodyard Jersey . "Id rather not be a distraction around here and Id rather just focus on getting ready for Jan. 11 (in San Jose)," he said. Last Tuesday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upheld Thorntons punishment for his actions in a game against Pittsburgh earlier this month. Thornton and the NHL Players Association had seven days to appeal to a neutral arbitrator. Thornton, who appealed the ban, was suspended for punching and injuring an unsuspecting opponent in a game at Boston on Dec. 7. He slew-footed Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik to the ice and landed gloved punches to his head. Orpik was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion. Bettman heard Thorntons appeal at a hearing in New York on Dec. 20. Ryan Hewitt Jersey .com) - Virginia is for loving Latrell Scott. Ryan Succop Jersey . CHICAGO -- No 11-round shootout this time. Emmanuel Sanders Jersey . Just a series of big stops for Kari Lehtonen. Lehtonen had a season-high 47 saves, Antoine Roussel converted a penalty shot in the third period and the Dallas Stars snapped the Chicago Blackhawks six-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night "Its fun if it goes well, but if things dont go well it can get kind of ugly," Lehtonen said. "I had no problem getting all those shots today. I was feeling good." It sure looked that way. Valeri Nichushkin had a goal and an assist for the Stars, who had dropped four of five, including consecutive shootout losses at home in their previous two games. Alex Chiasson and Erik Cole also scored. Patrick Sharp scored his 200th goal with Chicago in the Blackhawks first home game since a 5-1 victory over San Jose on Nov. 17. Patrick Kane had two assists, giving him 21 points in his last 15 games. The defending Stanley Cup champions hit the road while the circus took over the United Center and responded with an impressive 6-1-0 trip, including an epic tiebreaker during a 2-1 win in Dallas on Friday night that matched the record for longest shootout for each franchise. "Its nice to be home from that long road trip, but sometimes theres a letdown, and you cant let that happen," defenceman Duncan Keith said. "We were guilty of that tonight." Second-period goals by Nick Leddy and Johnny Oduya helped the Blackhawks erase a 3-0 deficit, but they went 1 for 5 on the power play in their second regulation home loss of the season. The Stars appeared to be headed for disappointment before Roussel skated in on Corey Crawford and was awarded a penalty shot after Niklas Hjalmarsson hacked away at him with his stick. Roussel then beat Crawford with a backhander into the upper right corner at 3:01, and Lehtonen stepped up with a series of solid saves to help the Stars hold on for their seventh victory in their last eight road games. "I felt like we played defence the whole game," Roussel said. "We didnt have much energy. Our goaltender played unbelievable and kept us in the game." Dallas was once again without forward Tyler Seguin, who missed his second straight game with concussion-like symptoms. He leads the team with 12 goals. The Stars jumped on an ill-timed line change by the Blackhawks to grab a 1-0 lead at 13:47 of the first. Nichushkin got a pass from Cody Eakin and sent a low wrister past Crawford for his third goal of the season. Chiasson then tipped home a long slap shot by Alex Goligoski for a power-play score with 1:10 to go in the period, and Nichushkin found Cole in front of the goal to make it 3-0 early in the second. "Very generous on the first three goals against us," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "We had one of those starts where we were trying to get ourselves into the game mentally. I dont think we were sharp on the plays and the goals against." That sure changed in a hurry. Sharps long slap shot got by Lehtonen at 9:39 for his third goal in four games, prompting the Blackhawks to turn up the pressure. Leddy converted a one-timer and Oduyas slap shot from the boards went off Chiassons stick on the way to the net for his third goal. The goals by the defencemen just 65 seconds apart tied it at 3 with 2:46 left in the period and led to a standing ovation from the crowd. The Blackhawks continued to generate quality opportunities in the third, but Lehtonen was there each time. He had a solid stop on Brandon Saad before Roussels penalty shot, and then made a great save on Sharp to keep the Stars in front midway through the period. "In the third they were coming hard and we were playing smart," Lehtonen said. "There were a couple of breakdowns, but nothing crazy. It wasnt a pretty win, but well take it." NOTES: Crawford had 14 stops. .. Stars C Ryan Garbutt was helped from the ice after he took a slap shot to his right leg in the first period, but returned to the game. ... Blackhawks D Michal Rozsival played in his 800th NHL game. ... Blackhawks C Michal Handzus was scratched due to an illness. ... In addition to Seguin, the Stars also scratched D Jamie Oleksiak and C Travis Morin. Jeff Heuerman Jersey . TORONTO -- Ottawa 67s forward Travis Konecny has been named the Ontario Hockey Leagues rookie of the year. Jason Myers Jersey . Konecny, a 17-year-old from Clachan, Ont., led the 67s and all OHL rookies in scoring with 70 points (26 goals, 44 assists) in 63 games while recording just 18 penalty minutes. He posted the highest point total by a 67s rookie since Jerrett DeFazios 71 points during the 1988-89 season. Konecny was selected first overall by Ottawa in the 2013 OHL priority selection draft. "Its an honour to be recognized in such a way and it really means a lot to me," Konecny said. "Id like to thank Coach Byrne and the entire Ottawa 67s staff for their help. Id also like to thank my teammates who welcomed me from the beginning and helped me day by day." Konecny earned OHL Rookie of the Month honours four of the six times it was awarded. He also served as Ontarios captain at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. "Travis had an exceptional first season in the Ontario Hockey League," said 67s coach and general manager Chris Byrne. "He quickly adjusted to the league, worked hard to get better and was a top player on our team and within the league. Travis has worked extremely hard to put himself in a position to win this award and deserves all the credit for doing so." Jordan Roos Jersey . Horford is out 3-to-4 months with a torn pectoral muscle for the Hawks, who have won two straight and five of six games. Atlanta improved to 2-0 on the residency with Saturdays 93-91 triumph over Minnesota, as Ivan Johnson scored his teams final four points, including the game-winning free throw with 4. Nazair Jones Jersey .C. Now hes squarely in the U.S. capital and helping the Washington Wizards playoff drive. John Wall scored 33 points, Gooden got 11 of his 21 in the final quarter and the Wizards overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 101-94 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday night. http://www.cheapseahawksjerseysauthentic.com/?tag=authentic-jordan-simmons-jersey . However, Jim Popp isnt sure how long hell be able to admire wide receiver Duron Carter.NICE, France -- Two-time defending European champion Spain faces a seemingly comfortable road to defend its title at Euro 2016 after being drawn Sunday with Luxembourg, Macedonia, Belarus, Slovakia and Ukraine for the qualifiers. "Its not as easy a group as it might appear to some. We are facing emerging teams who are young and strong," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said of the Group C draw. "The cold conditions could play a role in the group because many of the trips will be to teams from the east." The Netherlands was drawn in a tougher-looking Group A and faces the Czech Republic, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Iceland and Latvia. "The Dutch are the favourites. Together with them, it will be us, Turkey and Iceland fighting to advance," Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Cech said. "We have to cope with it if we want to go to France." There will be eight groups of six teams and one of five, each playing home and away. The top two teams from the nine groups qualify, along with the best third-placed side. The eight remaining third-placed sides will contest play-offs with four spots at stake. Host France is the 24th team and automatically qualified. It will play matches in Group I, but no points will be awarded for their matches. UEFA made the change because host nations can struggle to arrange suitable friendlies while others focus on qualification. Germany, the runner-up to Spain at Euro 2008, is in Group D and has potentially awkward matches against the Republic of Ireland and Poland -- led by Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski -- with Gibraltar, Georgia and Scotland also in the group. "The matches against Scotland will be great occasions," Republic of Ireland manager Martin ONeill said. "It looks like a group, Germany apart, where teams might take points off each other." England will be pleased with what looks like a winnable Group E featuring Switzerland, San Marino, Lithuania, Estonia and Slovenia. "Im very satisfied, in particular for the fans. Weve had some quite tough trips to get to in recent years, but theres some good places to visit," England coach Roy Hodgson said. "The name Switzerland always brinngs a smile to my face because they were four fantastic years (as national team coach). 12th Fan Jersey. " But Wales bid to qualify might mean going through the playoffs as Group B contains Eden Hazards Belgium and the attacking strength of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is completed by Andorra, Cyprus and Israel. "Im happy, positive," Wales coach Chris Coleman said. "We managed to get a point in Belgium (in World Cup qualifying) and were unlucky at home." Belgium coach Marc Wilmots was happy overall. "I am not going to say it is a beautiful draw, because every match is difficult," Wilmots said. "But I will return home feeling satisfied." Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed out on this years World Cup after Sweden was beaten by Portugal in a thrilling playoff, but the prolific Paris Saint-Germain forward should grace the fields of France in two years time. Sweden and Russia are likely to lead Group G, where Liechtenstein, Moldova, Montenegro and Austria look to be up against it. Italy, runners-up to France in 2000 and Spain in 2012, will be confident of winning Group H, despite facing Croatia, Norway and Bulgaria. The other teams are Malta and Azerbaijan. "Its a very demanding group, we will have to prepare ourselves well," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said. "Were not facing Belgium or Switzerland but I dont think Croatia is inferior to them. Croatia and Bulgaria are potential group winners." Group F, however, seems to be the most open one and it is hard to call the top two from 2004 champion Greece, Finland, Romania, improving Northern Ireland and Hungary. All of them should take maximum points against perpetual minnow, the Faeroe Islands. Having guided Portugal to the World Cup with a brilliant playoff performance against Sweden -- outshining even Ibrahimovic -- Cristiano Ronaldo will need to find his scoring touch to keep Portugal ahead of Serbia and Denmark in Group I, and trips to Albania and Armenia are sometimes tricky. France completes Group I, although Didier Deschamps team has no bearing on the outcome. "Its pretty good to play a team like Portugal, they will be prestigious matches," Deschamps said. More importantly, he is trying to show his young teammates the Colorado are still post-season contenders. He hopes winning a series at home was a fresh start. The 2014 World Figure Skating Championships begin this week in Tokyo. With Olympic champions in three of the four disciplines on the sidelines for various reasons, it is as though the page has been turned to the next Olympic quadrennial. We will get a glimpse of the future of the sport and meet some of skatings up-and-coming talent like the new world junior champion, 15-year-old Nam Nguyen of Canada while at the same time celebrating some of the sports stars. The setting for this years Worlds is perfect in that Japan is a country that is passionate about its skaters and skating. It is the quintessential skating audience; enthusiastic, appreciative and massive. The Saitama Super Arena just outside of Tokyo holds 18,000 spectators and is predicting sell-out crowds and record-breaking attendances. The only Olympic champion from Sochi that is here is the one that matters most to these fans, hometown hero Yuzuru Hanyu. He, alongside the immensely popular Mao Asada, leads a strong Japanese contingent which could dominate in the mens and ladies competitions. While Yuzuru is the favorite in the mens, his competition is expected to come from his training mate, Javier Fernandez of Spain and his teammate Tatsuki Machida. Asada will face Olympic bronze medalist Carolina Kostner of Italy, Russian teenager and the star of the team event in Sochi, Julia Lipnitskaya, and American Gracie Gold. While there is a lot to get excited about here in Tokyo, Canadian superstars Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir as well as Patrick Chan will sit this one out and be much missed. Even without Tessa, Scott and Patrick, Canada is still in the hunt for three medals. With the Canadian champions out of the dance and mens, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje along with Kevin Reynolds will get their turn to move from the shadows into the spotlight and, they hope, onto the podium. Kaitlyn and Andrew have a clear shot at a medal. In typical Weaver and Poje fashion, they have not let up after the Games and have continued to push themselves and refine their routines. I find their improvement since the Games impressive. With the top two dance teams from Olympics out, Kaitlyn and Andrew are squarely in the mix of five teams for the podium. The race is tight, but a podium finish is in their sights and well within their capabilities. Kevin Reynolds finished fifth at last years Worlds but with injuries and boot problems, he has struggled this year. He did not have hhis best skates in the individual event in Sochi and finished 15th. Miguel Andujar Jersey. We saw what he was capable of during the team competition where he laid down a stellar free skate, playing an integral role in Canadas silver medal win. He has had another month of training under his belt since the Games and he loves to skate in Japan where he has an adoring fan base. I expect that these circumstances will combine to give Kevin an outside shot at a medal. After a frustrating year, Kevin has a chance for redemption and he just may have timed it perfectly to finish on a high. Another Canadian team member who is looking for redemption after a frustrating season is Canadas ladies champion Kaetlyn Osmond, who was plagued by injuries this season. Her break-out year last season culminated in an eighth place finish at her first ever World Championships, a remarkable debut. Her lack of training time has unsettled her this season but I have watched her handle it well with the help of her coach, Ravi Walia. She has a sparkle and exuberance that needs to be strategically disciplined in order to give her the consistency she is looking for without losing the fire. This is something that can only come with time as well as trial and error. When Kaetlyn finds her groove, she can compete with the best of them. A medal may be out of her grasp in Tokyo but there is no doubt in my mind that Kaetlyn can establish herself as one of the contenders in this new Olympic cycle. Canada has two pairs going for the podium. Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moskvitch were fifth at the Games while Megan Duhammel and Eric Radford were eighth. They were third and fourth in the world last year and will look for similar results here. Kirsten and Dylan are known to charm their audiences and if they are to get the results they are looking for, they will have to deliver the technical details while winning over the fans. They can go clean and will need to if they are to medal. Meagan and Eric will try to bring home the hardware by capitalizing on their strengths as individuals, the ability to do difficult side-by-side triples, to give them the edge. They take big risks to maximize points and while it didnt pay off in the individual event in Sochi, it often does and you can expect it will here, too. The Olympic pairs champions are not here but competition will still be fierce with teams from Russia, Germany and China battling the Canadians for the top spots. Houses teammates celebrated the occasion by dousing him with beer, something the rookie left-hander didnt mind one bit. "I got rolled into this little cart and they gave me a shower," he said. "It was nice. I enjoyed it. Id take one every time we get a win." House (1-2) scattered nine hits, struck out three and didnt walk a batter. He was making the eighth appearance, and seventh start, of his career. "It feels great," House said. "I hadnt had one yet, but the time came and it was the right time, at home in front of the fans." Michael Bourns leadoff homer sparked a three-run third inning while Nick Swishers bases-loaded single scored two runs in the fifth and finished Jeremy Guthrie (5-7). Michael Brantley had three hits, including an RBI single in the eighth, for Cleveland. Bourn left the game after scoring the Indians final run because of tightness in his left hamstring. He had surgery on the hamstring in October and began the season on the disabled list. Bourn also missed several games in May with the injury. Cleveland manager Terry Francona said Bourn was examined following the game. "Well know a lot more (Sunday)," Francona said. House gave up a run in the first, another in the sixth and Danny Valencia hit a leadoff homer in the seventh. But House retired the next two hitters then was pulled after throwing 87 pitches. Kansas City loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth against closer Cody Allen, pitching in a non-save situation. Allen struck out Lorenzo Cain on a 3-2 pitch before Eric Hosmer swung at the first pitch and bounced into a game-ending double play. "I think I had Cain in swing mode because he swung at ball four," Allen said. "I was trying to use Hosmers aggressiveness against him because he was trying to tie it up right there." House, taken in the 16th round of the 2008 draft, began the season at Triple-A Columbus. He made five starts with the Indians from May 23-June 14 before being sent back to the minors. He was recalled a week ago and lost to Seattle on Sunday against Felix Hernandez, a game in which the Indians were held to one hit. "Hes pitched well enough to have a win before now," Francona said. "Hes shown he can get major league hitters out. Hes got a lot of poise out there." Hosmers RBI groundout in the first gave Kansas City the lead. Bourns third homer of the season tied the game. Jason Kipnis put Cleveland ahead with an RBI double and Lonnie Chisenhall added a run-scoring single. Kansas City added a run in the sixth, but House struck out Billy Butler with two runners on to end the inning. "He did a nice job of limiting the damage and threw the ball very well," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Every time we got something going, he found a way to put an end to it." Cleveland loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth before Swisher, who was batting .193 and struck out in his first two at-bats, lined a 1-2 pitch to right-centre. The hit pushed the lead to 5-1 and gave Guthrie his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander was charged with six runs and allowed a season-high 11 hits in four-plus innings. Chisenhall was 2 for 3 and raised his batting average to .342, but he doesnt have enough plate appearances to be listed among the league leaders. Clevelands third baseman is making a strong push to be named to the American League All-Star team, which will be announced Sunday. Chisenhall is hitting .350 (55 for 157) with nine homers and 36 RBIs in 44 games since May 14. NOTES: Swisher has been taking fly balls in right field during pregame drills. He appeared in 27 games in the outfield in 2013, but has yet to play there this season. ... Royals OF Nori Aoki (strained left groin) was eligible to come off the 15-day DL on Saturday, but will be sent on a rehab assignment in the next couple of days. Aoki, who is hitting .263, has been sidelined since June 21. ... Indians C Yan Gomes, who started 70 of the first 85 games, was given the night off as George Kottaras started behind the plate. ... Royals OF Alex Gordon snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a sixth-inning single. ... Royals LHP Danny Duffy (5-7) takes on RHP Corey Kluber (7-6) in the three-game series finale Sunday. In lieu of my column, I thought Id bring you a couple of stories from a man who grew up worshipping Gordie, and then got to play with him, if only for the briefest of moments. This is an excerpt from Hall of Famer Brian Kilreas book, They Call Me Killer, which I wrote with him a few years back. Brians words, as told to me. Detroit was always my team. I had three uncles: Hec, Wally, and Kenny. They all played for the Red Wings. Uncle Hec won the Stanley Cup in 1936, two years after I was born. But he was still there in the 40s when I was a kid, so I loved Detroit. Back in those days, the paper wouldnt come until after four, so I would race home from school every day to find out who had the goals and the assists from the game the night before. How many did Gordie get? How about Ted Lindsay? These guys were my idols. I grew, and became a decent player, and as it turns out, a Detroit scout named Alex Smart saw me in Ottawa and told Jimmy Skinner about me. Jimmy was coaching the Hamilton Tiger Cubs in the OHA. They were affiliated with the Red Wings. So they invited me to Hamilton for their training camp in 1953, and I made the team. And they ended up signing me to a contract. JD: Jimmy Skinner would coach Killer for one season in Hamilton before becoming head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. His Wings won the Stanley Cup the next year, 1955. Skinner is credited with starting the tradition of kissing the cup. So I belonged to the Red Wings, but I was still a long way from actually getting there. I spent two years in junior in Hamilton and then four years in Troy, Ohio, of the International League. Troys training camp was always in the same place as the Wings in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. When our practice was done, Id hurry up and get my gear off to go watch the Wings skate. They were amazing, just like a machine. During the season, we would play in Troy on Sunday afternoon, then I would drive the 180 miles to Detroit to watch the Red Wings play Sunday night. I just loved that team. My second year at that camp, I was just 19, and one day we were all just hanging around the hotel. Gordie Howe comes up to me and says he and Ted Lindsay are going down for an ice cream, and would I like to come along. Would I like to come along?!? Cripes almighty, these guys were world champions and legends! Yes, Id like to come along! So we go get our ice cream, and then we come by a pool hall. Well, I had played a lot of pool as a kid. When I was about 14 in Ottawa, I would ride my bike uptown to this pool hall called The Little LaSalle, over the Centre Theatre. I was up there all the time, so I became pretty good at it. Gordie says, Lets have a game. It was Gordie and I against Ted and his partner, I cant remember who it was (I was a little distracted by the other two guys). I held my own, and we won. Then we went back to the hotel, and now Gordie wants to play ping-pong. Well, it just happens that I had played a lot of ping-pong growing up, too. So Gordie and I won that game as well. It was just a fantastic day for a teenager to get to hang around these guys he idolized. Ted Lindsay: Gordie and were living our dream, too. We were nobody special. So if we were driving to the rink, and the back seat was empty, and a kid like Brian was headed there, wed pick him up. Or go get an ice cream, or shoot a game of pool. We liked to mingle with them, let them know they were part of the organization. We were no better than them. We were worried about making the team, too. JD: (Aside) Did Ted Lindsay just say he and Gordie Howe were worried about making the Red Wings every year?!? Sorry to interrupt. Carry on, Killer. The fact that I could walk around and say hello to Gordie Howe--that was the highlight of my career. I didnt even care if I played a game with Detroit! But I did. One game. It was the 1957-58 season. I was still playing in Troy and the Red Wings had a couple of injuries. One of the guys hurt was Dutch Reibel, who played centre between Gordie and Ted. So they called me up. I was just in the right place at the right time, I guess. It was unbelievable. For a week, I got to practice with the Red Wings, playing centre between Gordie and Ted. They said, Brian, just go to the net, well find you. So I just tried to stay out of the way. Dutch actually came back from his injury, but they still put me in the line-up for a home game against Boston. I was nervous as heck. I just wantted to get dressed and look around the room at these guys. Elandon Roberts Jersey. In warm-up, I was just trying to stay out of everybodys way. These were the names of all the guys I used to watch win Stanley Cups! And here I was, sitting on that bench next to them. It was unreal. I was glued to that bench most of the game. But finally, they put me on. I was on the Detroit Red Wings, playing centre on a line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay! I dont remember much about the shift, probably because I was just in awe, watching Gordie the whole time. Its pretty tough to focus on the opposition when you just want to watch Gordie Howe. It was a pretty uneventful shift, but no harm was done. I didnt do anything dumb in my 40 or 50 seconds out there. I felt good about that. But that was it. One shift. I spent the rest of the game on the bench. I remember it was 1-0 for Boston, and I was sitting near the end of the bench next to Beaver Poile. So Gordie comes over and says to me. Touch this stick for luck, will ya. So I grabbed the stick and said to the stick, Go get a goal! So what happens? Gordie goes out and scores! Then he comes back to the bench, looks at me and says, You think you have another one? But the magic didnt work again. With the score 1-1, Don McKenney comes down the left wing for Boston, right in front of our bench. Al Arbour was playing defence for Detroit. Al stumbled a bit, and McKenney went by him and fired a slapshot. It caught the inside of the post on Terry Sawchuk and went in. Boston beat us 2-1. The next day we got to practice and were all sitting in the room with all our equipment on, but no skates, just shoes. So Al Arbour comes in and Beaver Poile, who is a really funny guy, looks at Als shoes and says, Hey Al, those look like the skates you had on yesterday on McKenneys goal! Everybody just broke up. Al did too, he had a great sense of humour. It was a wonderful time, just being in the same room as those guys. I was sent back down to Troy shortly after that. And I would never get back to Detroit. In fact, that one shift would be the last one I would get in the National Hockey League for eight-and-a-half years. But what a memory. Ill never forget the night I ran into Gordie at the Hall of Fame ceremony a few years back. I was coming down the escalator to the main lobby, and Gordie happened to be coming up the escalator, and we said hello, and started chatting. I was supposed to be taping an interview with one of those Toronto radio stations, and I knew someone was going to be looking for me. But I was not going to interrupt Gordie Howe. I didnt care if they had to wait an hour for me. He talked about Colleen and his kids, and his dog. It was like he was just happy to be able to talk, not for an interview, but just to someone from his past who really cared about what he was up to. We must have talked for three quarters of an hour. It was great. Then someone came and found him, and he had to go do some interview, and I had to go find my radio guy. But man, was it ever wonderful just spending time with the greatest hockey player ever. I think he is. My friend Don Cherry says its Bobby Orr, and what Wayne Gretzky did was unbelievable, but if you ask Wayne who the greatest player ever is, he says Gordie Howe. To me, its Gordie because he played in what was almost the same as the dead-ball era in baseball. The games back then were all 2-1, 3-2. They didnt have those 7-6, 8-5 games they had after hockey expanded and we went to 20-some, and then 30 teams. There werent enough good players for 30 teams. There still isnt! Everybody had great teams when there were only six of them. And all six had an all-star calibre goalie. So for Gordie to amass the numbers he did, it was amazing. I mean Bobby Orr would have been a star in that day, and Wayne Gretzky would have been a star, but would they have the same numbers Gordie Howe did? I dont think so. When I talk to Gordie and Ted, I never ask them if they remember that one game, that one shift I played with them. Im sure they dont. And it doesnt matter. Im just honoured they remember my name. Ted Lindsay: I remember dont remember the details of that game or that shift. But I remember the kid. And he did just fine. (THEY CALL ME KILLER, HarperCollins) POSTSCRIPT: I ran into Brian at The Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Monday night. He spent a few minutes in front of Gordies plaque, and said a few prayers to his old teammate. We all send along the same sentiments to Gordie and his family. VANCOUVER -- The B. Barkevious Mingo Jersey .C. Lions made a tough decision to part ways with Geroy Simon prior to last season. When the 38-year-old retired earlier this month, it was an easy call to honour the CFLs all-time leading receiver as soon as possible. The Lions announced before Fridays 37-13 pre-season victory over the Calgary Stampeders that Simon will have his No. 81 added to B.C. Place Stadiums Ring of Honour this summer. "Its something thats very special and I appreciate it," said Simon. "This was home for a long time and its a place where I feel real comfortable so Im really happy and really honoured for the recognition." But while Simon is more than deserving, the speed at which it has come about is a bit of a surprise. B.C. traded Simon to the Saskatchewan Roughriders when it was decided his role would change with the Lions for the 2013 season. He went on to have modest numbers during the regular season with the Riders, but scored two touchdowns in the clubs Grey Cup victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Simon had indicated that he wanted to play one more season with either the Lions or Riders in 2014, but wasnt able to agree to terms with either club. "That was the plan but it just didnt work out," said Simon, who won the Grey Cup with the Lions in 2006 and 2011. "I wanted to play but I also didnt want to play anywhere else other than B.C. or Saskatchewan. I made that quite clear. When the decision was made that I wasnt going to come here I just said Im going to retire and move on." The Johnstown, Pa., native added that he doesnt hold any animosity towards the Lions for what transpired the last two off-seasons. "I think that takes more effort to be mad and hold a grudge," said Simon. "I move on. Im looking forward to my next career and Im happy with my decision and whatever else happens." Lions general manager and vice-president of football operations Wally Buono -- who made the call not to bring Simon back as a player -- said honouring him was "a no brainer." "I want to thank Geroy for making this happen because he could have been difficult to deal with," said Buono. "He was, as he always is, a great pro, a great human being." Now working as a scout for Saskatchewan, Simon was taken aback that his former club would reach out so quickly and honour him on July 25 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, coincidentally the team that gave him his start in the CFL. "It was totally unexpected. I didnt expect it," he said. "I was shocked but happy and pleased with the organization." On the field Friday, Lions quarterback Kevin Glenn finished 17 of 21 for 173 yards and a touchdown as he continues to look like the favourite to start the clubs opener on June 28 against the Edmonton Eskimos. No. 1 quarterback Travis Lulay did not take a snap in the pre-season as he continues to recover from off-season shoulder surgery. Stefan Logan returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter as B.C. jumped out to an 18-0 lead after just 15 minutes, but Calgary quarterback Drew Tate led his team back in the second quarter to trail 21-13 at the break Lions rookie defensive back T.J. Lee had two interceptions -- including one that he returned 15 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to put the game out of reach at 31-13 -- while linebacker Solomon Elimimian added two interceptions of his own. In a battle to make the team, Lee made quite an impression in his final audition. "I just appreciate the opportunity of playing this game," said Lee, who could have had four interceptions on the night. "Im grateful." Lions head coach Mike Benevides, whose team will host this years Grey Cup game, definitely took notice. "I know theres going to be tough decisions," he said. "The process today was really good for us. Fast, aggressive defence." Tate -- who threw a TD -- and fellow Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell were both picked off twice, while reigning CFL most outstanding player Jon Cornish rushed for 33 yards on five carries early on before spending the rest of the night as a spectator. Prior to the game, Buono said there was nothing awkward when the Lions approached Simon about honouring his number, even though they dealt him prior to last season and declined to bring him back in 2014. "Its business. Nothing was done on a personal level. When you ask me who one of my all-time favourite players is, Im going to say Geroy," said Buono. "He was a tremendous warrior for us, a tremendous ambassador in the community. "It was tough last year. It was tough to cross that bridge that we had to separate with Geroy. It was tough to know that we were going to line up without Geroy." Simon had 1,029 career catches for 16,352 yards and 103 touchdowns with Winnipeg (1999-2000), B.C. (2001-2012) and Saskatchewan (2013). He was the CFLs most outstanding player in 2006 with 105 catches for 1,856 yards and 15 touchdowns, capping that campaign with his first of three Grey Cup titles. Buono, who coached Simon with B.C. during his prime, said he never changed who he was on or off the field. "He responded well to the challenges. The thing about players is you want them to be able to withstand the expectation and the pressure," he said. "When youre the No. 1 receiver year in and year out, theres a tremendous price to pay because everybodys on you, everybodys after you, defences are made to stop you but Geroy overcame all that. "He was always a guy that worked hard, was very humble, was great in the locker-room and was a superstar in the community." Simon said he now wants to build his front-office resume in hopes of one day running a CFL team. "In 10 years I see myself as being a GM or an president of an organization," he said. "I want to be running the show somewhere. "Im not done (winning Grey Cups). Im going to win a few more." Notes: Fridays attendance at B.C. Place was 26,445. ... The Stampeders open the regular season June 28 at home against the Montreal Alouettes. ... Tate finished 6 of 12 passing for 86 yards, while Mitchell completed 10 of 20 passes for 100 yards. Justin Johnson Jersey . -- Once again, Carlos Santana was a huge hit in Kansas City. Duane Brown Jersey . Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (5) - Simply put, Lundqvist was brilliant. http://www.cheapseahawksjerseysauthentic.com/?tag=authentic-mychal-kendricks-jersey . made a diving catch in left field for the final out in a 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins in a regular-season finale Sunday. Zimmermann (14-5) allowed only two baserunners, finishing with 10 strikeouts and one walk in the fifth no-hitter in the majors this year. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week, they discuss Phil Kessels tweet, the great curling career of Kevin Martin, the demise of Manchester United manager David Moyes and video replay in the NBA. Dave Naylor, TSN 1050 My thumb is down to Toronto Maple Leaf Phil Kessel for his tweet this week, since deleted, which read, "night fishing with friends … doesnt get much better." Okay so no one expects Kessel to be sitting in his basement for weeks brooding about what happened during the final month of the season, like so many Leafs fans probably are. But an NHL star tweeting the words "doesnt get much better" about anything besides hockey during the first round of the playoffs is just asking for it. Theres nothing more insulting to fans than the perception that players who are paid millions dont care as much as they do. And true or not, thats the impression Kessels tweet delivered to Leafs fans. Gary Lawless, TSN 1290 My thumb is up to the greatest money player in the history of mens curling, Kevin Martin. Martin retired this week and goes out the winner of four Briers, a world championship, two Olympic medals and a record 18 Grand Slams on the World Curling Tour. Martin revolutionized the game, fought for players rights and was a master strategist. He could throw with big weight or make the finesse come around. The Bear, as the sometimes gruff Martin was known, roared atop mens curling for 25 years and most cowered in the face of his abilities and will. If you had to pick someone to make a shot with the money on thhe line, Martin was your man. Bo Scarbrough Jersey. Canadian curling was better for his presence. He raised the bar. Others chased but never caught him. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated My thumb is up, regretfully, to the firing of Manchester United coach David Moyes. Moyes had the toughest act in sports to follow, replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm of one of soccers signature franchise. Like succeeding Vince Lombardi with the Packers or John Wooden at UCLA, this probably was never going to end well. But after 26 years of Sir Alex, Moyes, Fergusons fellow Scot and handpicked successor, lasted just 34 games. Manchester United was a dysfunctional mess under Moyes, losing frequently at Old Trafford and generally playing like a team trying to get its manager fired. Well, lads - mission accomplished. Dave Hodge, TSN If I havent made myself clear in the past, I am an opponent of any replay system that does not allow for anything and everything to be reviewed. Heres how restrictions hurt the process. Thursday nights NBA playoff game had Atlanta leading Indiana by six points (score was 84-7. Jeff Teague of the Hawks made a three-pointer, but it was subject to review. The refs used video replay to determine two things--was it, indeed, a three and not a two, and was Teague in bounds when he released the ball? Yes, on both counts. But the replay also showed that prior to the shot, Teague had stepped out of bounds--sorry, not reviewable. Sorry, dont get that. The purpose of the review was to determine if the basket should count. Video evidence proved that it shouldnt count. But it counted. TORONTO - The Toronto Raptors will try to shake off a pair of losses tonight when they host the struggling Detroit Pistons. Ufomba Kamalu Jersey . Toronto has dropped games to Indiana and Miami since a five-game winning streak and closed out a three-game road trip at 1-2. In Tuesdays 86-79 loss at Indiana, DeMar DeRozan led the way with 28 points and Patrick Patterson added 20 for the Raptors, who shot 37 percent for the game and received 16 points from Kyle Lowry. "Down the stretch, you cant beat a team like that by trading baskets with them," said Patterson. "You have to get stops and we just couldnt do that." The 79 points were a season low for the Raptors, who managed just 80 in a loss to Chicago on Nov. 15. DeRozan has scored 20 or more points in six of his last seven games. Toronto will open a three-game homestand Wednesday versus Detroit, Brooklyn and Milwaukee, and is 6-8 at Air Canada Centre. For their part, the Pistons are caught in a funk and will resume a three-game road trip tonight. Detroit has dropped five in a row and three straight on the road, including Tuesdays 89-85 setback at New York in the opener of the trek. Josh Smith led the Pistons with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Greg Monroe ended with 19 points and Andre Drummond added 12 and 17 rebounds. The Pistons fell to 8-9 on the road, shot 37.2 percent and made just 3-of-19 3-pointers. "It was a very good effort," said Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks. "(We) got down 17 and was able to fight back. We just didnt make any shots in the end to get over the hump. We played hard though." Detroit will close the trek Friday at Philadelphia. The Raptors and Pistons split four meetings last season. Terrence Brooks Jersey . "Today was a very great day for me. It was always my dream to be good in GS," Wierather said. "I took quite a long time to get there. It feels awesome to have my first win (in GS)." Wierather leads overall with 595 points from Lara Gut (56, who finished second, and Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany (535). James White Jersey . Hazard lasted just 18 minutes in Tuesdays contest before being substituted with the calf problem, and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes he will be without his star winger for at least the next two weeks. http://www.cheappatriotsjerseysauthentic.com/?tag=authentic-jakob-johnson-jersey . Hall had a goal and three assists in a 5-4 loss to San Jose on Tuesday, had an assist in each of Edmontons next two games the capped the week with a goal and two assists in the Oilers 4-2 win over Anaheim on Sunday.(CCA) - Braden Calvert and his Winnipeg team notched two more wins on Saturday, including a 6-5 victory over first-place Norway at the World Junior Curling Championships in Flims, Switzerland. "I guess well take the win after a game like that," said Calvert, who handed Norwegian skip Eirik Mjoeen his first loss of the round robin. "We got off to a bad start. I threw a really bad rock in five and we had to come back from that. Luckily, we did and we pulled through." After giving up consecutive steals and trailing 3-0 at the break, Calvert and his team of Kyle Kurz, Lucas Van Den Bosch, Brendan Wilson, alternate Matt Dunstone and coach Tom Clasper fought back in the sixth. Calvert made a tricky angle raise double to score two and followed that up with a steal of two in the seventh to go ahead. "That was huge in terms of the momentum we got from that shot," Calvert said about the double in the sixth end. "We gained a lot of confidence and basically got back at them." Against Switzerland, the Canadians "came prepared to play," according to Canadian Team Leader Andrea Ronnebeck. "The Swiss fans, as always, were enthusiastic but so were the Canadian fans," said Ronnebeck. "The arena was rocking (pun intended) with a full house of Norwegians, Swiss, Scots, Italians, Americans and Canadians. It was awesome. Cow bells and all!"& And the Canadian supporters had a lot to cheer for as Calvert led the team to a 7-2 win over Switzerlands Yannick Schwaller, improving Canadas record to 4-3 and moving them into a three-way tie for third place (with Scotlands Kyle Smith and Schwaller). Hjalte Froholdt Jersey. "Were starting to get on a bit of a roll," said Calvert after the game. "Were starting to gain some momentum and confidence. We were really sharp out of the gate tonight and grabbed an early deuce. That was definitely the turning point in the game and we kept fighting and were able to pull it off. All the teams here are tough and each game is going to be a battle." On Sunday, the Canadian men will take on USAs Jake Vukich (2-5) and Austrias Sebastian Wunderer (3-4) to finish up the round robin. On the womens side, Kelsey Rocque defeated USAs Cory Christensen 8-4 to move into first place in the standings, tied with Korea, Switzerland and Russia, all with 5-2 records. Rocque and her Edmonton team of Keely Brown, Taylor McDonald, Claire Tully, alternate Alison Kotylak and coach Amanda-Dawn Coderre led the USA 6-4 after eight ends and scored a deuce in the ninth to put the game away. The Canadian women have now won three in a row and will try to keep the momentum going in their final games of the round robin on Sunday against Scotlands Gina Aitken (2-5) and Denmarks Christine Svensen (0-7). MIAMI -- Randy Wolf pitched six innings Monday night for his first victory since 2012, and the Miami Marlins beat Tampa Bay 3-1, sending the Rays to their seventh consecutive loss. Deon Cain Jersey . The 37-year-old Wolf, making a comeback from the second Tommy John surgery of his career, allowed three hits and one run. He struck out seven, walked one and won for the first time since he pitched Baltimore past Tampa Bay on Sept. 13, 2012. The Rays fell to 0-7 on their eight-game trip. Theyre 12 games below .500 for the first time since 2007, and their record (23-35) is the worst in the American League. Four Miami relievers completed the six-hitter, and Steve Cishek pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 13 chances. The Marlins snapped a streak of four consecutive home losses as they started a four-game home-and-home series against their intrastate rivals. The Rays went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. Theyve scored six runs in their past five games. Alex Cobb (1-3) paid dearly for a rocky start. The Marlins scored three times in the first, when their first four batters reached. Casey McGehee hit a two-run single, and a bases-loaded double play scored another run. Cobb then settled down and shut out Miami over the next five innings, but the Rays couldnt rally. Tampa Bay starters remained winless in the past 15 games, the teams longest such streak since 2006. Wolf (1-1) didnt pitch in 2013 and was making his second start of this year. His fastball registered only in the upper 80s (mph), but he had command of his breaking pitches and struck out five of the first eight batters he faced. The Rays finally broke through in the fifth on an RBI double by Desmond Jennings, but Wolf retired the next three hitters. Wolf was signed as a free agent last month after ace Jose Fernandez was sidelined by a season-ending elbow injury. The left-hander improved his career record to 133-118. NOTES: Rays SS Yunel Escobar (quad) was back in the lineup after missing two starts. ... Tampa Bay RF Wil Myers (wrist), who went on the disabled list Sunday, is awaiting further test results but is expected to be sidelined three to six weeks, the team said. ... Rays RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow surgery) threw 50 pitches in a simulated game in Port Charlotte and said he felt good. Hell likely make at least three rehab starts but is on schedule to return before the All-Star break. ... Marlins 2B Derek Dietrich was given the night off after a succession of defensive gaffes. ... Before the first pitch, the wives of Marlins players beat the Rays wives in a softball game. ... Henderson Alvarez (2-3, 2.97 ERA) is scheduled to start Tuesday for Miami against Chris Archer (3-2, 4.00). Daurice Fountain Jersey .com) - The fading Ottawa Senators have a chance to make up some ground in the playoff race on Tuesday night as they play host to the New York Rangers. Grover Stewart Jersey . According to TSN Edmonton reporter Ryan Rishaug, agent Rick Valette met with Oilers senior VP of hockey operations Scott Howson and general manager Craig MacTavish on Monday to kick off the talks. http://www.cheapcoltsjerseysauthentic.com/ .com) - Damian Lillard poured in 40 points on 11-of-21 shooting to go along with 11 assists, and the Portland Trail Blazers stunned the Oklahoma City Thunder, 115-111, in overtime on Tuesday.ATLANTA -- When Andrelton Simmons botched a grounder, the St. Louis Cardinals seized their opportunity. For the Atlanta Braves, it was another night of missed chances. Matt Carpenters two-run double that helped carry St. Louis past the slumping Braves, who shook up their lineup but still lost their seventh in a row, 4-3 on Monday. The Cardinals scored three runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of shaky defence by Atlantas Gold Glove shortstop. In fact, Simmons had a couple of plays that couldve been scored errors but were initially ruled hits. The second one was changed to an E-6 and turned out to be especially costly, leading to a pair of unearned runs. St. Louis built a 4-0 lead and barely held on to win the series opener. "It was big," Carpenter said. "Especially when we got out to a big lead, to be able to hold them off, that was big for us." Desperate for more offence, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez batted pitcher Aaron Harang eighth and put second baseman Ramiro Pena in the ninth spot. Pena had two hits, including a seventh-inning homer that brought the Braves within a run, but they couldnt overcome a 4-0 deficit. Juston Upton took a called third strike from Trevor Rosenthal to end the game with the potential tying run at second base -- Uptons fourth strikeout of the night and extending Atlantas woes with runners in scoring position. The Braves were 1 for 12 in those situations and are 6 of 51 during their losing streak, though Freddie Freeman saw some encouraging signs. "We hit some balls hard with runners on," he said. "We were in the game the whole game. We couldnt say that the past week." The last time the Braves had such a lengthy skid was May 21-28, 2012, when they dropped eight in a row. Their longest losing streak last season was four straight. Shelby Miller (4-2) got a shaky win, giving up six hits and two runs in five-plus innings. Trevor Rosenthal pitched out of trouble for his ninth save, giving up a leadoff single to Simmons. Jordan Schafer bunted the runner to second, but Pena flied out to right before Upton whiffed. Harang (3-3) took the loss, though he pitched much betteer than his previous start, when he was pounded for nine runs by the Marlins. Luke Rhodes Jersey. This time, he gave up four runs in six innings but only two were earned. The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Peter Bourjos led off with a single before Mark Ellis grounded one off Simmons glove. The shortstop, looking to make a force at second, appeared to take his eyes off the ball as it skipped past him. After Miller bunted the runners to second and third, Carpenter doubled to right-centre to bring them both in. Matt Holiday followed with a hard liner past third baseman Chris Johnson to make it 3-0. "Those things happen," Harang said of Simmons error. "I told him not to be too hard on himself. Hes probably going to save my butt plenty of times this year." St. Louis added another run in the fifth on Bourjos RBI single, but Gonzalez challenged a call at third base that had seemingly given the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. Yadier Molinas bases-loaded grounder ricocheted off Harangs leg, right to Johnson at third. He caught it and blindly stepped back in search of the bag and managed to barely nick it, as the replay showed. The called was quickly overturned after a review of only 37 seconds. The Braves knocked out Miller in the bottom half of the sixth, the first three hitters reaching safely. The Cardinals went to the bullpen after Evan Gattis RBI single, and B.J. Upton followed with a sacrifice fly off Pat Neshek. Neshek escaped the jam by striking out Simmons. NOTES: The Cardinals sent pitcher RHP Joe Kelly back to St. Louis to continue his rehab from a strained left hamstring. "Joe just wasnt to the point where they thought they could push him, so keeping him around the rest of this road trip didnt make any sense," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I dont know Id call it a setback as much as he just wasnt progressing as quickly as we wanted." ... Atlanta RHP Gavin Floyd will make his season debut when he starts Tuesday against LHP Tyler Lyons (0-2) of the Cardinals. Floyd is coming back from Tommy John surgery and will start in place of Ervin Santana, who has a bruised right thumb. GLENEAGLES -- Two years after the "Miracle of Medinah," its not just the Americans seeking redemption at the Ryder Cup. Ryan Anderson Jersey . Graeme McDowell holed the winning putt for Europe at Celtic Manor in 2010 but was a peripheral figure in Medinah, earning one point from four matches as his partnership with Rory McIlroy struggled. Europes come-from-behind victory, from 10-5 down at one stage on Saturday evening, has gone down in lore but it was tinged with disappointment for the Northern Irishman. "I was low on energy," McDowell said, "I was physically not where I needed to be and that became evident as the week went on." He has been desperate to make amends ever since. McDowell has experienced it all at the Ryder Cup -- the first shot (2012), the last shot (10) and everything in between. But the man who says he "embraces high-pressure scenarios" took a backward step in the singles at Medinah, placing himself in the middle of the draw on the Sunday and losing 2 and 1 to Zach Johnson. "Perhaps I needed that little bit of intensity of the last groups," he said. "Perhaps come Sunday, if its needed, I will put myself a little bit further down the order and ask the question of myself and focus my mind again." McDowell isnt short of galvanizing influences. A month ago, his wife, Kristin, gave birth to their first child, Vale Esme, and McDowell tied for 36th in his only tournament since -- the BMW Championship in Colorado. He is counting on a "delayed nappy (diaper) effect" kicking in for his fourth straight Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. "By the time I got to Denver, I actually experienced a little bit of a flat, a little bit of a downer," McDowell said. "But Ive come to terms with that, Ive come to terms with the fact that sleeping is done, is gone forever. And I arrive here this week feeling fresh and ready to go." Jeremy Reaves Jersey . Toronto dropped a 7-2 decision to the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon, with only a pair of late runs preventing a second straight shutout loss. Josh Willingham belted a two-run homer in the first inning and Kendrys Morales hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh as the Twins took the rubber game of the three-game series. Twins starter Phil Hughes (7-2) struck out nine and allowed seven hits over seven shutout innings. With the loss, Torontos lead atop the division standings fell to five games over Baltimore and New York. The Orioles were home to Boston on Wednesday night while the Yankees were in Seattle. The Blue Jays will play Baltimore and New York next week before closing out their trip against the Cincinnati Reds. "Well see how good we are," said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "Were playing a couple good teams in our division. Weve got a small little lead on them but theyre right there. So we need to play good baseball on this road trip, especially the way the last four or five games have gone. "For our psyche more than anything else we need to regroup and put a couple good ball games together." Toronto (39-2 has been giving up early leads of late, with the opposition scoring first for the seventh straight time Wednesday. Danny Santana opened the game with a single off Marcus Stroman (3-1), who was making his third career start. The leadoff man scored when Willingham turned on a 1-2 pitch and put it into the second deck. "It was just a bad pitch," Stroman said. "It was probably the worst pitch of the outing. It was just one of those that was supposed to be buried but it just kind of hung up there. I tried to do too much with it." The Blue Jays starter allowed three earned runs and nine hits while striking out four. Triple-A callup Bobby Korecky replaced him in the seventh and loaded the bases before Morales cleared them with a three-run double. Toronto avoided the embarrassment of a fourth shutout loss in five games by scratching out a pair of runs in the eighth. Casey Fien got the last four outs for his first save of the season. "Theres no doubt weve cooled off with the bats," Gibbons said. "But that can turn in one day, that can turn overnight. But I do think its going to be good to get out on the road. "Weve been at home a long time. AA little change of pace, a little change of scenery might do us some good. Paul Worrilow Jersey. " The Blue Jays led several offensive categories last month and, despite the recent cold stretch, have won 16 of their last 22 games and 21 of 29. "The bats are going to come around," Stroman said. "All the guys in the clubhouse are pretty positive about it. I have 100 per cent confidence in every single guy in that lineup that the guys are going to start doing what they were doing at the beginning of the year. Its close." The Twins, meanwhile, moved two games under the .500 mark with the win. Minnesota (31-33) outhit Toronto 16-10 while Hughes picked up his ninth quality start of the season. "Super job by him of changing speeds, moving the ball in and out," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "He used his breaking ball a lot better today." Hughes did well to get out of a jam in the sixth inning after Toronto shortstop Jose Reyes extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an infield single. Reyes moved to third base on a Melky Cabrera single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Oswaldo Arcia made a nice sliding catch in foul territory on a Jose Bautista flyout and Hughes struck out Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind to escape. "I felt like I kind of found myself in the third or fourth inning and was able to ride that through," Hughes said. The Blue Jays fell to 20-17 at home this season. They have been much stronger away from Rogers Centre this year and at 19-11, have the fewest road losses in the major leagues. "The bats will heat up again," Gibbons said. "Hopefully sooner than later." Notes: Announced attendance was 45,080. There were several groups of schoolchildren in the crowd. ... Koreckys callup from the Buffalo Bisons was announced Wednesday morning and he was sent back down after the game. The Blue Jays also optioned outfielder Kevin Pillar to the Bisons and recalled outfielder Darin Mastroianni. ... Dozier left the game in the fourth inning due to tightness in his lower back. He was replaced at second base by Eduardo Escobar and is listed as day to day. ... Toronto will kick off a four-game series at Baltimore on Thursday night. ST. Denico Autry Jersey . PAUL, Minn. -- Josh Harding wasnt considered the Minnesota Wilds top goaltender entering the season. Hes currently the leagues best at making saves. Harding stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of the season and the Wild beat the New Jersey Devils 4-0 Sunday night. Mikael Granlund, Torrey Mitchell, Dany Heatley and Jason Pominville scored for the Wild, who have won five of six. Nino Niederreiter had three assists. Harding improved to 7-2-1 while lowering his goals-against average to 1.11 and increasing his save percentage to .950. "The guys are making it easy. Its never about one player. We win as a team and we lose as a team like we always say. This was another team win. Everybody contributed and pulled their weight," he said. Niklas Backstrom was expected to see the bulk of the action this season for the Wild. However, he went down with a leg injury in the teams third game and hasnt seen much action since, in large part because of Hardings stellar start. "Its unbelievable," Niederreiter said. "Every game hes played hes kept us in the game. Hes been playing phenomenal for us." Cory Schneider, back after missing three games with a sore groin, finished with 16 saves for New Jersey. The Devils, 28th in league scoring at 1.86 goals per game, were blanked for the second straight night and fourth time in 14 games. "Its frustrating to a point, but youve just got to keep plugging away. Everythings not going to go your way and you have to just keep fighting through it," centre Stephen Gionta said. Looking to forget about Saturdays 1-0 home loss to Philadelphia when it managed just 14 shots, New Jersey dominated early with six shots on goal in the opening 5 minutes. However, the Devils went nearly 8 minutes before their next shot, including two power-play opportunities. "Hards made some good saves. It kept us in the game," said Granlund, who gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead with 6:40 left in the first period. Pominvilles shot from the left circle was saved by Schneider, and a bad-angle rebound attempt by Niederreiter trickled out to the slot where Granlund was alone for his first goal of the year to go along with a team-leading 10 assists. "Im glad he got that goal tonight," said coach Mike Yeo. "Hes had a lot of chances and hes been setting up a lot of plays, but its good for him to get that off his back. Mitchells first goal of the season put Minnesota up 2-0 at 7:35 of the second. Schneider got a piece of Zach Parises shot from below the right circle, but the puck fluttered to the crease where four players were crashing the net and Mitchell deflected the puck across the line. Parise, who had 194 goals and 410 points with the Devils, signed a 13-year, $98 million contract with the Wild on July 4, 2012, and was playing against his former team for the first time. The teams did not meet last year because of the NHL lockout-shortened schedule. "As a player you always hate practicing and scrimmaging against your own team. Thats what it felt like for me tonight the whole game," Parise said. Heatley scored his first non-empty-net goal of the season early in the third, redirecting Keith Ballards shot behind Schneider. Pominville added an empty-netter with 2:25 to play, his sixth goal in the past four games. New Jersey defenceman Jon Merrill left his first NHL game after sliding hard into the boards in the first period. Merrill was skating into the corner to the right of Schneider when he was tripped up by Mitchell. He went into the boards face-first, and it looked as if he sustained at least one cut on his face. With blood on the ice, Merrill looked wobbly as he was helped to the locker room. Coach Peter DeBoer said he had lacerations on his face and the team was conducting some tests. "Thats tough," DeBoer said. "We were looking forward to seeing him play. Hes earned the opportunity to get up here. So you never like to see an injury like that at any point, but particularly on his second or third shift in the NHL." NOTES: Minnesota C Charlie Coyle missed the game after aggravating a sprained knee Friday. He had missed the previous 11 games with the injury, and is considered day-to-day. To replace Coyle, the Wild recalled F Carson McMillan from AHL Iowa. ... New Jersey forwards Patrik Elias (upper body) and Travis Zajac (right ankle) missed their second straight games. ... His surgically repaired right hand still has scars from last months surgery, and the recovery has been slow. He expects the hand, injured in a fight with Kings centre Mike Richards, to be OK by training camp. And Couture works out with Kings defenceman Drew Doughty, who was set to have his day with the Stanley Cup on Friday. Doughty doesnt chirp his good friend, but that doesnt stop Couture from thinking about the painful first-round series loss. "I think every time I see hockey on TV or read about it in the paper," he said. The Sharks were in command of the series, up three games to none. But they proceeded to become the just the fourth team in NHL history to blow that lead. The Kings won the Cup, and the Sharks were left to wonder what went wrong. Couture doesnt ponder what he and his teammates couldve done differently. The thoughts are more simple than that. "I just think about how much it hurts," he said Thursday night at Dominic Moores Smashfest charity event. "The feelings arent going to go away — probably never. Its just something that sticks with you for a long time." In time, Couture thinks the collapse should serve as motivation for the Sharks who remain. For now, at least, that includes captain Joe Thornton and veteran winger Patrick Marleau, whose new contracts start next season and include full no-move clauses. San Jose general manager Doug Wilson has talked about rebuilding and going younger. In the process the Sharks traded 38-year-old defenceman Dan Boyles free-agent rights, traded 34-year-old defenceman Brad Stuart and bought out 33-year-old winger Marty Havlat. In free agency, the Shaarks signed enforcer John Scott in an effort to "act as a deterrent and help keep teams and opposing players honest," according to Wilson. Skai Moore Jersey. The vast majority of the roster looks similar to the one that finished the playoffs, though San Jose hopes to have defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic back after his injury and will move Brent Burns back to the blue-line. "We knew something was going to happen. Every year changes happen," Couture said. "Well see what happens going forward. Some things may happen, some things may not, so well see." One thing that may happen in the not-too-distant future is Couture becoming the captain. The Sharks took the "C" off Marleau four years ago and he has continued to play and produce, so that concept isnt far-fetched for Thornton, as well. Couture, who served as captain of the OHLs Ottawa 67s, has had conversations with Wilson this summer but said he had not been specifically asked to increase his leadership role. "I think its just expected," the 25-year-old Guelph, Ont., native said. "I think each year you play more with an organization youre expected to take on more of that role. Those are kind of the things that dont have to be said." Couture will begin his new US$30-million, five-year contract this season and hopes that his tenure in San Jose is a long one. With that, he anticipates a larger role in the locker-room and on the ice. "I think I learned a lot from the leaders on our team in San Jose the last couple of years and taking small things from them and try to be a leader as much as I can with our team with our young guys," Couture said. "Weve got a lot of leaders on that team, a lot of veteran players, so I think well be fine." --- Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Cheap Jerseys China NFL Jerseys Cheap NBA Jerseys Wholesale NHL Jerseys Wholesale MLB Jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys China Wholesale NCAA Jerseys Wholesale Football Jerseys Wholesale Basketball Jerseys Wholesale Baseball Jerseys ' ' '

VANCOUVER - B. Charles Harris Jersey .C. Lions offensive lineman Patrick Kabongo announced his retirement Thursday, ending his nine-year career in the Canadian Football League. Kabongo appeared in 33 regular-season games for the Lions after joining the team in 2012 after seven seasons in Edmonton. "Patrick was a big personality on and off the field and we are grateful to have had him be part of our organization for two years," Lions general manager Wally Buono said Thursday in a release. "We wish him and his family the very best in the future." Kabongo, a West Division all-star in 2008, played 121 games for the Eskimos. Galchenyuk has been out since Jan. 6 with a broken right hand.Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Isaiah Thomas finally got the Phoenix Suns over the hump. Thomas had 23 points off the bench and the Suns defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-89 on Friday night. After the Suns came close many times throughout the game to take a lead over the defending champs, Thomas blew past Boris Diaw in the open floor to finally put the hosts in front 88-87 with 3:34 left. San Antonio trailed 92-89 with 6.5 seconds remaining following a timeout, but Diaw was whistled for a five-second violation just before he signaled for a 20-second timeout. Eric Bledsoe sunk two game-clinching free throws at the other end. Markieff Morris posted 20 points and 11 rebounds, Eric Bledsoe tallied 12 points and nine boards and Alex Len provided his first career double-double, 10 points and 11 rebounds, off the pine for Phoenix, which beat the Los Angeles Lakers in its season opener Wednesday. The way he was playing with his length had a real effect on the game, Suns head coach Jeff Hornacek said of Len. Tony Parker supplied 19 points and six assists, while Tim Duncan added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Spurs, who edged Dallas in their first game of the year on Tuesday. Parker and Marco Belinelli sandwiched 3-pointers around a Gerald Green triple to stake the Spurs to a 77-70 cushion early in the fourth before three consecutive Thomas buckets trimmed the gap to 77-76. Sann Antonio, though, responded with an 8-1 spurt, with a Cory Joseph turnaround jumper providing it an 84-78 spread with 6:53 to play. Cordrea Tankersley Jersey. . Phoenix answered back with a 12-3 surge and Hornacek used a three point guard lineup in the final 4:35. After Thomas layup, Morris sunk two free throws and then put down a dunk off a Len interior pass to make it 92-87 in favor of Phoenix with 1:09 left on the clock. Manu Ginobili was fouled on a three and made 2-of-3 foul shots at the other end. Bledsoe was off on a jumper, Len backtapped the ball back to Thomas to retain possession, but Thomas misfired to give San Antonio possession with 16.9 ticks left. Earlier, a 15-3 Spurs first-quarter swing gave them an early 24-9 margin and they led 24-11 after the frame. The Suns began the second with a 13-2 run and later tied the game at 30-30 midway through the stanza after Len threw down an alley-oop pass from Bledsoe. San Antonio responded by putting in eight straight points and took a 45-36 lead into the break. The Spurs took a 71-67 edge into the fourth. Game Notes Thomas became the fourth Sun, joining Tom Chambers, Tom Gugliotta and A.C. Green, to scored at least 23 points in his first two games with the team ... TORONTO - The Raptors and Nets dont like each other, even after one playoff game that has been made abundantly clear. Jerry Rice Jersey . If youre looking to trace back that animosity, start with Torontos one-point victory at Barclays Center in late January. There was a playoff-type buzz in the building that night. DeMar DeRozan sat out with an ankle injury, Kyle Lowry and Paul Pierce both turned in playoff-type performances. There were 18 lead changes, nine ties and three technical fouls - on Lowry, Piece and Kevin Garnett - later, the Raptors stole the game, literally, as Patrick Patterson picked off a Deron Williams pass and hit the winner. "This is a team we could see in the playoffs," uttered multiple voices in both locker rooms and at that point we knew, somehow, some way it was bound to become a reality. Terrence Ross continued to foreshadow a couple days later, listing the Nets as a preferred playoff opponent. Andray Blatche was not amused. Meanwhile, the Nets also had Toronto on their wish list as they rested players and lost games to maximize the odds of this matchup coming to fruition. The Raptors were not amused, at least they shouldnt have been. Then the war of words started. "[Expletive] Brooklyn," yelled Raptors president, general manager and hype man Masai Ujiri as he addressed thousands of fans outside the Air Canada Centre prior to Saturdays Game 1. Reluctantly, he delivered a halftime apology, more for the choice of phrasing than the message itself. Hes not alone in that sentiment. "That should represent how we all feel," Dwane Casey said after his team fell victim to the veteran savvy of Brooklyn in the series opener. "I feel the same way and Ive got his back," added Greivis Vasquez. "We dont like any of them either. Thats how we all feel. All of us." Nets coach Jason Kidd said he didnt know who the Raptors GM was and on Sunday the barbs continued to fly. "Im shocked that Bryan Colangelo would say that," Pierce said to the New York Post, informed of what the opposing GM had to say the day before. Reminded that Ujiri replaced Colangelo in the Raptors front office last summer, as if he were somehow unaware, Pierce responded, "I dont know what youre talking about." Theres genuine hostility here. Its not manufactured, though the media has helped fan the flames. "Raptors vs. Dinosaurs," read the Toronto Sun cover on game day, poking fun at the age of Pierce and Garnett. "Dont F*** With Bklyn," the New York Daily News shot back 24 hours later. This has the makings of a competitive, heated series, but rivalry? "I dont think its a rivalry at all," Kyle Lowry said following a Sunday afternoon practice session outside of the Raptors gym on the third level of the ACC. Hes right. Neither team will call this a rivalry and neither should. Territorially, the Nets and the Knicks are natural adversaries, while the Nets - especially with former Celtics Pierce and Garnett on board - have their sites set on throwing down with the Heat, who they defeated four times this season. The Raptors? They dont have a rival. Thats the unfortunate reality of qualifying for the playoffs six times in 19 seasons. For the bulk of their existence, and especially during a recent five-year postseason layoff, theyve been their own worst enemy. "I dont know," said Casey, "rivalry?" "I think the whole Atlantic Divisions a rivalry, the Eastern Conference. We havent got to the spot yet where we can say, Hey, theyre a rival. New Jerseys been to the Finals before, we havent. A lot of teams in our division have been there, where were trying to get to. Weve got to earn that." Thats their focus right now, as it should be. Earning it. The Raptors lost Game 1, not because of Ujiri, not because of anything that was said or done off the floor. They lost because they were outplayed by a team that was not fazed by the moment, by their surroundings. The ACC was electric on Saturday and the sellout crowd did their part, and then some. The building looked and sounded like the "living hell" that Ujiri has called for over and over again. Chants of "Nets suck" and "KG sucks" rang down from the stands throughout the afternoon. Is Toronto a basketball town? It sure seemed like it for three hours but one thing is for certain, its a sports city and as such, it craves that rivalry. It still boos Vince Carter, it still shows up to jeer the Knicks, a former playoff foe from the Raptors "glory days". It would like nothing more than to believe that Brooklyn is the enemy, and for at least three more games they will be. Then what? It depends on what happens here. Rivalries are made in the playoffs and a long, emotional, drawn-out series, almost regardless of the result, would go a long way in prolonging the underlying hatred between these two clubs. For now its being put to the side, at least in the Raptors locker room, where bouncing back and evening the series is now a top priority. Aside from a brief quip to lead off his media scrum - "I promise you I wont have any profanity" - Casey wanted no part in discussing Ujiris controversial speech from the day before. Neither did his players. A war of words may not lose them this series, but it wont win it either. On Sunday the message was clear; a little less conversation, a little more action, please. "This is about basketball," said the Raptors coach. "All that stuff has happened." "All the other stuff, what was said, its about basketball. Its about screening. Its about finishing plays. Its about executing defensively. I dont want to get off on another tangent." Ronnie Lott Jersey .C. - Blair Jones scored the eventual winner in the third period as the Abbotsford Heat defeated the Oklahoma City Oil Barons 3-2 in American Hockey League action on Friday. San Francisco 49ers Jerseys China . At quarterback, all agree that Andy Dalton has been a wonderful surprise, but to truly progress he has to play his best in the playoffs. The two losses in the wildcard rounds keep the evaluation on Dalton open -- just like it did for Peyton Manning many years ago and Matt Ryan until last year. http://www.cheap49ersjerseysauthentic.com/ .ca presents its latest weekly power rankings for the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League season.DENVER - Peyton Mannings touchdown streak is over, and he couldnt care less.I dont need to break or set another record, the five-time MVP said after watching his streak of 51 games with a touchdown throw end Sunday three shy of Drew Brees NFL record. It was important to get a win.The Broncos beat Buffalo 24-17 behind C.J. Andersons three touchdown runs and a swarming defence that made up for Denvers three turnovers with three takeaways of its own.Manning hadnt been held without a TD toss since Nov. 14, 2010, for Indy against Cincinnati.Thats 1,485 days.C.J. did a good job down there in the red zone, getting in there on those runs, Manning said of Andersons scores of 6, 1 and 3 yards. Those are hard-earned runs down there. It was good to improve our red zone (efficiency) after settling for five short field goals in a win at Kansas City.We didnt score many touchdowns last week and that was the difference tonight, being able to score touchdowns in the red zone as opposed to settling for field goals. The Broncos (10-3) won their third straight game since downshifting their high-octane offence from a pass-oriented attack to a run-heavy approach.I hope fans will still keep coming to the games, deadpanned Manning, who finished 14 of 20 for 173 yards with two interceptions. With Julius Thomas out again, Demaryius Thomas hobbled and Emmanuel Sanders pin-balling through the secondary all afternoon, Wes Welker awakened from a season-long slumber to lead the Broncos with six catches for 82 yards. This was not the game for the receivers to have a lot of big numbers, Manning said, but Wes play helped us get this victory.Former Broncos QB Kyle Orton had a day like Manning usually does: 38 of 57 for 355 yards. He led the Bills (7-6) on two long desperation TD drives in the fourth quarter after theyd fallen behind 21-3. His 38 completions tied a team record and his 58 attempts is a franchise high. Not good enough to beat a good football team, said Orton, who was sacked four times.Other takeaways from Denvers grind-it-out win:UNDERHANDED FIST BUMP? After Anderson bulled in for his second TD, the Broncos celebrated. So did the refs. Moments after Andersonss 1-yard score, line judge John Hussey and umpire Carl Paganelli fist bumped after making what turned out to be the correct call. Tom Rathman Jersey. Bills safety Aaron Williams wasnt amused. After the game, he linked the video of the officials reaction to a tweet critical of the officials. The NFL had no problem with the gesture: It was an acknowledgment of good mechanics between the two officials involved in making the call, NFL spokesman Michael Signora said.SACKLESS BILLS: The Bills still lead the league with 48 sacks but they didnt add to that total Sunday as they went without a sack for the first time since Sept. 22, 2013, against the Jets. You have to give it to the big boys up front, said Anderson, praising his O-line that was pilloried last month.WONDERFUL WATKINS: With 127 yards on seven catches, Sammy Watkins became the first Bills rookie with four 100-yard games in a season.Every week I try to be that guy to change the game and make plays, Watkins said. I had great catches. But ultimately we didnt win the game and thats the ultimate goal.MAGNIFICENT MARSHALL: When last years top tackler, Danny Trevathan, returns from IR this week, hell join a linebacker corps thats done just fine without him.His sub, Brandon Marshall, leads the team with 107 tackles and on Sunday had a team-high nine stops to go with three pass breakups and his first career interception.MCMANUS BACK: One week after replacing him with veteran Connor Barth, the Broncos brought back kicker Brandon McManus as a kickoff specialist and he had four touchbacks in five kickoffs. Marcus Thigpen brought the other one out from 8 yards deep in the end zone and only reached the 19.Its good to still be in the locker room, continue to learn, McManus said. In practice, Ill still be working on my field goals. Ive got such a strong leg I kind of have some variables in my field goal steps that I know I can change. And obviously I didnt want to do that in the middle of the season. So, now I can work on it and still help the team however I can.For now, thats by kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap Jerseys China NFL Jerseys Cheap NBA Jerseys Wholesale NHL Jerseys Wholesale MLB Jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys China Wholesale NCAA Jerseys Wholesale Football Jerseys Wholesale Basketball Jerseys Wholesale Baseball Jerseys ' ' '

CALGARY -- With less than two months to go until the Sochi Olympics, Kevin Dineen will have to hit the ground running as the new head coach of the Canadian womens hockey team. Travis Fulgham Jersey . Dineen was named to the post Tuesday, just a few days after Dan Churchs surprise resignation. Dineen was signed for the remainder of the season and will guide the defending champions at the Feb. 7-23 Winter Games. "This has been a whirlwind few days but when this opportunity presented itself I immediately jumped at it," Dineen said at a news conference. Its the first international coaching job for Dineen, who served as head coach of the NHLs Florida Panthers for parts of three seasons until he was fired last month. He previously served as head coach of the AHLs Portland Pirates for six seasons (2005-11). "Were very excited that Kevin will join the coaching staff of Canadas national womens team and bring his unique perspective to the dressing room," Hockey Canada chief operating officer Scott Smith said in a statement. "Kevin has had success in both the AHL and NHL, and were looking forward to him being a part of the staff for the final push towards Sochi." Dineen, a 50-year-old who was born in Quebec City and raised in Toronto, also played in 1,188 NHL regular-season games, scoring 355 goals and adding 405 assists. He succeeds Church, who unexpectedly stepped down last week. Church said he felt there was a lack of confidence in his ability to coach Canada to a gold medal at the Games. Assistants Lisa Haley and Danielle Goyette handled the coaching duties in Canadas 5-1 loss to the archrival United States in an exhibition game last Thursday in Calgary. The two womens hockey powers meet again Friday in an exhibition game in Grand Forks, N.D. As a player, Dineen represented Canada on six occasions. He made four appearances at the IIHF world hockey championship, winning silver in 1985 and 1989. He won a Canada Cup in 1987 and just missed the podium at the 1984 Winter Games, when Canada settled for a fourth-place finish at Sarajevo. "I am a product of Hockey Canada," Dineen said. "Ive had the opportunity to represent my country on the international stage. I may have a little unfinished business from my Olympic experience." The Canadian womens team is aiming to win Olympic gold for the fourth straight time. "This is a critical time for Canadas national womens team with the start of the Olympics less than two months away, and we feel Kevin is a terrific fit with our staff as we get ready for Sochi," said general manager Melody Davidson. "His experience, both on the ice and behind the bench, will be invaluable over the coming weeks." Dineen, Goyette, Haley and Davidson will work together to finalize Canadas roster for Sochi over the coming weeks. "Things are happening pretty quickly," Dineen said. "I know Im hopping on a moving train here and will rely heavily on the whole coaching staff, and Lisa and Danielle, to help this initial stage for a couple of weeks." Twenty-four players remain in centralization, including three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards. Canadas final roster for the Sochi Games will include 21 players, including three goaltenders. Theo Riddick Jersey . Many of those eyes are in the United States of America, a country that the sport has wanted on its side for some time. On Sunday the football Gods delivered once again, only this time it was time for good old USA to experience as much heartache as joy. Portugal 2-2 USA Football is a funny old game. Last week the USA struggled to keep the ball, were not at their best, and still won. This time they treasured the ball far better, were absolutely outstanding, and didnt win. This World Cup has been an absolute blockbuster and some of its main characters have been counter-attacks, comebacks, headers, and substitute goals. All four starred together in an incredible last scene in Manaus. Portugal were on the ground, seemingly knocked out in Brazil, flat out on their back with the referee standing over them about to wave his arms and end their misery. They knew they were out of the fight. Angry, petulant, disappointed they were a wounded bunch. Then, like a boxer swinging one last right hook at an opponent just for the sake of it, they delivered a stunning final moment to another monumental match in Brazil. The clock read 94:25. Michael Bradley picks up the ball and has no outlets to pass the ball to. Eder, the Portugal striker who came on early in the first half finally did something valuable by making a crucial tackle. 94:28 - Nani counters with pace, looks up and sees Cristiano Ronaldo on the right side. It was the first time the talisman was in that zone where he could put a pass in. (stats powered by Opta) 94:31 - Ronaldo had just enough time to take one touch, look down at the ball, look up and deliver an absolutely incredible cross. 94:33 - Silvestre Varela then runs into the box and delivers a powerful header into the mix. The USA victory and place in the last 16? Gone in eight seconds. It was a fitting dramatic finale to an enthralling game in the Amazon. It will be remembered for the final scoreline, the Ronaldo pass, and the USA comeback, but we shouldnt forget about the tempo. The game was stretched throughout, played at an incredible pace in exhausting conditions. Watching it we learned many things. We learned that Portugal have very little depth. Anyone who has followed this small, yet proud football nation would tell you they already knew that but this exposed it even deeper. Anyone who criticizes Ronaldos performance would be best served to look at what he had to work with. They lost Helder Postiga early, threw on Eder and effectively played with 10 men for the second successive match. The sight of the worlds finest player having to play up front in the second half and get absolutely no service was an all too familiar one. A sad tale of what could have been. Nani scored a goal but was very disappointing the rest of the way, giving the ball away far too much. Joao Moutinho is a special player but his sparring partners, Miguel Veloso and Raul Meireles are not at the form of Euro 2012. Theyve been hammered by injuries, admittedly, but this was one of the worst showings by a Portugal team in two decades. Last week they could blame Pepe and a brilliant German attack. On Sunday their excuses ran out and they will likely fly home on Friday as another European team humbled in Brazil. Jurgen Klinsmanns team were by far the better side and will be happy to be on four points through two games but it is far from job done. Indeed, it could turn out to be what might have been. Sure, Jurgens new mates and old mates can kick a ball around for 90 minutes in Recife on Thursday and both go through but anyone who thinks Germany would agree to that are kidding themselves. Germany are in Brazil to win the World Cup, not risk playiing a close game with an inferior country, where a bad bounce or poor decision could end up costing them the chance to progress or, even, win the group. Marvin Jones Jr Jersey. If the game is even as it enters the final 25 minutes I could see the two teams defending deep and giving up very little but until then I expect Germany to use the game as an opportunity to get back the tempo and attacking guile that was missing against Ghana. Belgium 1-0 Russia The 2014 World Cup has been billed by some as the greatest ever but then Fabio Capello arrived in a time machine from 2010 to remind us just how easy a game can be killed off. It almost worked. To be fair, the dullest game of the tournament so far was not all Russias doing. An average Belgium defended deep and rarely got playmaker Eden Hazard into the game, looking to settle for a point they know would have helped them win the group. The schedule makers also played a small part in the snoozefest. Every team in this World Cup, Mexico vs Brazil aside, had four or five games off in between group games but all the teams who played on Sunday play again on Thursday, giving them just three days off before a crucial group finale. Thankfully, Belgium decided to find some extra gears in the last ten minutes and for the second successive match their changes made a difference. Substitute Kevin Mirallas got the best out of Hazard and the two combined on the goal, scored by another sub, 19-year-old striker Divock Origi. The extra gear found by Belgium showed, again, they can reach another level when required and also left Russia embarrassed that they couldnt. Russia were organized and clearly had a game plan that almost worked and it is hard to be too critical of that based on that game but the bigger question mark over this teams methods is do they have it in them at all to play a more open, expansive style that will be needed against Algeria to progress? This World Cup has made a mockery of players and coaches who have tried to play like it was 2010. Capello gets one last shot to prove otherwise, against Algeria. How did that work out for him in 2010? South Korea 2-4 Algeria Missed by many, this was a fantastic game. Algeria are a real threat to Russia. They are strong in attack, have a fine, technical leader in Sofiane Feghouli who can glide by midfielders and can score. Admittedly, South Koreas defending in the first half was woeful but Vahid Halilhodzics side deserve tremendous credit for sensing their opportunity to finish the game off early. It has been a good couple of days for African football. Man of the day Nominees.... Vincent Kompany - on a day where most of his teammates were average, the Manchester City skipper was fantastic in the middle of the Belgian defence. Islam Slimani - he got his first start at the World Cup and it wont be his last after he tormented the South Korean backline. Clint Dempsey - talk about a big game player. Not blessed with any one outstanding trait, he just seems to pop up in big moments. Jermaine Jones - After a brilliant display on the left of a midfield diamond against Ghana, he was asked to come more centrally this time and had a superb match. Cristiano Ronaldo - he was far from his best but, just like Lionel Messi on Saturday, he had his moment. Winner Cristiano Ronaldo - a defensive liability in the first half, clearly not fit, playing with a bunch of average players, sulking and then he does that. Wow. Whats next Australia vs Spain & Chile vs Netherlands (12pm/9am) Croatia vs Mexico & Brazil vs Cameroon (4pm/1pm) Burning question for Mondays games Can Chile win the group and finally carve open a path to the late rounds that doesnt include nemesis Brazil? CLEVELAND -- Ugly, sloppy or abbreviated, the Cleveland Indians will take wins any way they can get them right now. Ronald Zamort Jersey . This is no time to be picky. This is playoff time. Zach McAllister lasted five innings and the Indians got two unearned gift runs from Houston in a 2-1, rain-shortened victory over the Astros on Friday night and moved into one of the two AL wild-card spots. The game was delayed for 1 hour, 9 minutes before the umpires decided to call it after 6 1-2 innings. Shortly after Clevelands win, Texas lost to Kansas City, allowing the Indians to jump the Rangers in the wild-card standings. Its the first time the Indians have been atop the ever-changing board since Aug. 4. "For us to be able to get this win, regardless of how we got it, its all about the Ws at this point," first baseman Nick Swisher said. "And if we keep winning, the season keeps going, and hopefully everyone here in Cleveland gets real happy." The Indians, who entered the night trailing both Tampa Bay and Texas by one-half game for a wild-card spot, scored an unearned run in the second and fourth innings off Brett Oberholtzer (4-4). McAllister (9-9) allowed just one run and got a key double play in the fifth as well as a diving catch by centre fielder Michael Bourn in the first inning, a defensive gem that set the tone. Cleveland also got two innings of hitless relief from Marc Rzepczynski and Bryan Shaw, who struck out three of four batters he faced for his first save. Brandon Laird homered for the inept Astros, who committed three errors, lost their seventh straight and fell to 51-103 -- four losses shy of matching the club record set last season. "Errors are a part of the game," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "We all know that, but at the same time you expect those plays to be made in a major league baseball game." The win improved Clevelands record to 48-18 against teams currently below .500 -- the majors best mark -- and perhaps the biggest reason the Indians have a chance to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. With a very favourable schedule ahead, the Indians were hoping to capitalize on a four-game series against baseballs worst team to stay in the wild-card fray. They needed 11 innings on Thursday to finally beat Houston 2-1, and then got a major assist from the awful Astros -- and Mother Nature -- to win again. As they waited out the delay, Indians fans kept tabs on the Tampa Bay-Baltimore and Texas-Kansas City games on Progressive Fields giant scoreboard. It was a similar scene in Clevelands clubhouse as players stayed tuned to the action elsewhere. "Theres 18 TVs in here, theres games all over the place," Swisher said. "Theres games you might not even want to be watching that are on. Right now, its watch time. Weve got ourselves in a great spot and just to be able to be here, a complete turnaround from last year, its exciting. Its nice. It feels like people are jumping on board right now and its the perfect time to do it." McAllister worked in and out of trouble in the fifth, when his slim lead seemed about to vanish. The Astros loaded the bases on a single, walk and single, but the right-hander got leadoff hitter Jonathan Villar to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play to preserve Clevelands 2-1 lead. McAllister threw four straight balls to Jose Altuve to start the sixth and was immediately lifted by Indians manager Terry Francona, who wasnt going to wait for the situation to worsen and went to his bullpen. Rzepczynski came on and got two outs -- one when catcher Carlos Santana threw out Altuve trying to steal -- before Shaw struck out Chris Carter. With the heavy rain approaching, and the weather forecast looking bleak, the Indians took a 2-1 lead in the fourth thanks to two errors by the Astros on one play. Ryan Raburn hit a one-out single and Asdrubal Cabrera walked. Michael Brantley then hit a grounder to first baseman Carter, who tried to get a forceout at second but threw wildly into left field, allowing Raburn to score. Both runners advanced when a throw to the plate by left fielder Marc Krauss hit a sliding Raburn in the shoulder and the ball skipped to the backstop, a sequence more suited to a Little League field than a major league ballpark. McAllister got two quick outs in the second before Lairds fourth homer gave the Astros a 1-0 lead. NOTES: The Indians are 14 games over .500 for the first time since May 24, 2011. ... Indians RHP Justin Masterson (oblique) threw a 33-pitch bullpen session, and its possible the All-Star could pitch if the Indians make the post-season. Masterson, who has been out since Sept. 2, will be re-evaluated Saturday and could throw a simulated game as soon as Monday. ... The Indians have spread around the walk-off wealth. They have had 10 wins in their final at-bat with nine different players getting the game-winning hit. Jason Kipnis is the only player with two walk-off hits. ... Aviles snapped an 0-for-23 slid with a double in the sixth. Alex Wesley Jersey . The Red Sox maintained a share of the AL wild-card lead Tuesday night, using four home runs to beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-7 and set up a dramatic conclusion to the regular season. The skidding Red Sox were 6-19 this month before rebounding to edge the last-place Orioles. Eric Dungey Jersey . A strong fastball. A big, bending curveball that can buckle hitters at the knees. Against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, Elias put the entire package together against one of the leagues strongest lineups. http://www.cheapnewyorkgiantsjerseysauthentic.com/?tag=authentic-brian-mihalik-jersey . THE THUNDER & PACERS BENCHES: In a nutshell, not impressive at all.CENTURION, South Africa - English golfer Ross Fisher was close to his first European Tour title in four years after extending his lead to five shots in the Tshwane Open on Saturday. Fisher, one ahead overnight, carded a 5-under-par 67, including seven birdies and two bogeys, at Copperleaf to lie at 18 under after three rounds. His fourth and last tour win was the Irish Open in 2010, when he alsoo played in the Ryder Cup. Kyle Lauletta Jersey. "It would be nice to win in a good fashion because I feel like the game is good enough to win by a good number of strokes," Fisher said. Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland shot 69 to be 13 under, and will partner Fisher in the final round. A shot further back were Englands Simon Dyson and Spains Carlos del Moral, who both made 71. Defence wins Championships. Bobby Hart Jersey . Prevailing wisdom has always suggested such, no matter the sport. Is there reason to question this sentiment? The team with the least goals against has won the Premier League six times in the last decade. An impressive record and standing example for the merits of superior defensive play. Chelsea at present time boasts a league-best 21 goals against, six goals better than the next best team defensively; giving good reason they are currently atop the table. Jose Mourinho continues to be praised as a tactical genius, getting the most out of his inherited squad of millionaires. The woe, is me, little horse approach by Mourinho is comical. Chelsea remains among the worlds top spenders with virtually unlimited resources. Mourinho deploys a stifling, boring, and ultra-conservative approach because its his way of controlling a match, giving what he believes the best chance to win the battle and the war. Thankfully for Jose, the talent of the likes of Hazard and Oscar mask what often times is negative football. Other managers do not get equal acclaim as the Special One. Thats unfortunate. There is more than one way to win in football. In fact, in a higher tempo, physically demanding and end-to-end nature of the Premier League, goals-for has proven a more decisive determinant to league glory than defensive record. The team with the most goals scored has won the league all but twice in the last decade. If we want to operate in the world of clichés, than perhaps a good offence is the best defence. While the Mourinho defensive model has merit, more attractive attacking football wins as well. At the end of the day, fans want victories. They want titles. All things being equal, managers with bravery to open things up and go for it in an expansive brand of football is the ultimate combination. Queue Liverpool Football Club, 2013-14. A team without the resources of Chelsea are keeping pace in the Premier League, not through a boring, grinding and grating brand of football. Under Brendan Rodgers, purposeful ball possession and decisive attack rules the day. In less than two years under his watch, Liverpool has gone from a team struggling to build from the back, failing to play the ball on the ground and void of identity not labeled hard-working. This team has morphed into the most exciting, ruthless team in front of goal in the BPL. Dreadful defensively, it has not mattered. Liverpool is fourth in the table and is more likely to challenge for the title rather than fall out of the top four. Only Newcastle has a worse defensive record in the top 11. While a dip in form has been projected by most, there is no such demise in sight. Liverpool has scored an incredible league best 70 goals in 27 games; 21 better than leaders Chelsea and almost double that of fifth place Tottenham (36). The Reds have scored 19 goals in their last six games. Luis Suarez who leads the league in goals (23) has only scored once in that span. Daniel Sturridge has been a revelation, automatic in front of goal with 18 in 19 games. Much credit goes to SAS. But in fairness, a team approach with superior movement on and off the ball has created an incredible number of chances. Only Manchester City has created more chances than Liverpools 352. They have the most assists and are top five in virtually every passing category. Theres no quantifiable statistic to gauge team belief. But every time Liverpool is in and around the area, there is a genuine threat they are going to score. Manchester City gets the plaudits for their attacking approach. Liverpool hardly have the superstar talent outside of Suarez, but are every bit the attacking powerhouse. The triangles across the field, movement and vision on how to use the space are Rodgers greatest influence. Stout defensive play is a work in progress. They have more defensive errors than any team in the Premier League. Rodgers is adamant its the players and not the system to blame for defensive frailties. "The problem is it is not coaching. Some of the things we concede goals in, you cant coach that. Theres a feel when you are in the game of how to defend and you have to use your experience to defend properly," explained Rodgers. And hes absolutely right. First choice wing-backs Glen Johnson and Luis Enrique have missed long stretches through injury, but neither are reliable defensively. Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel are both inconsistent and have been linked to moves elsewhere for quite some time. Kolo Toure is a turtle. And the rest fail to provide any confidence in front of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Rodgers has tried everything to cover up the deficiencies. Formations featuring 3, 4, or 5 at the back have been deployed, all to varying levels of success and failure. The system has been less important than the consistency in approach. Through the misgivings, there is an understanding how the team is going to play. And the insistence on getting up the field down the wings, with Steven Gerrard playing a deeper role, sitting on top of the back four has been important for shape. The team will continue to evolve as Rodgers finds suitable defenders. It will be critical this summer to find replacements. Important for Liverpool is the direction is clear with team style and approach already determined. A strong has offence is equally important as stingy defence in all sport. League leaders in Germany, France, Italy and Spain have all scored the most goals. In the NFL, the Broncos number one offence got to the Super Bowl, only to come up short against the Seahawks number one defence. Heading in, the offence was favoured. The Boston Red Sox led Major League Baseball in offense last year and won the World Series. Liverpool is four points out with 11 to go. The three teams above them are all competing in other competitions. Liverpool can stay fresh with no distraction. It would be truly a fairy tale story if they can pull this off. And could go down as the team with the weakest defence to ever win a Premier League title. Its all about the goals. Other Musings - In a matter of days the focus at Old Trafford has gone from Wayne Rooneys new £300,000 per week contract back to David Moyes under fire. While a new lucrative, record setting contract for Rooney was a no-brainer, what to do about Moyes is more difficult. Moyes was handed a six-year contract to be successor, hand-picked by Sir Alex Ferguson. The former manager regularly speaks out against rash managerial changes in the game. Ferguson preaches patience and consistency, much like the treatment he was given at United. That doesnt mean Moyes wasnt a mistake, or doesnt give any assurance he will be a success. United continues to fail to perform under Moyes. The product is not good enough. Other managers have had instant success with their new teams: Mourinho, Manuel Pellegrini, Carlo Ancelotti, and Pep Guardiola to name a few, managing teams in the same conversation as giants Manchester United. The excuse mongering for Moyes, whether it be the players or approach doesnt hold water. There are challenges for any new manager. It seems Moyes was ill prepared or ill equipped to deal with the task at hand. It seems Manchester United are ready to make it rain, splashing cash to compete with their fellow big boys in European football. But should Moyes be trusted to spend the war chest wisely? What experience does he have in doing so? And how much rope will he be given if next season starts poorly? Its a massive risk rolling with Moyes. Remaining loyal and committed to a manager is an honourable trait. But it only works when you have the right man. There has been nothing to suggest Moyes is the right fit other than the word of Sir Alex. A stubborn, bullish approach on Moyes isnt whats needed. Can Ferguson admit he potentially made a critical error in judgment on his successor? - Panic over poor English results in the first leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League have the knives out already. Its a referendum every year about what league is the best in the world, which is nonsense. There is no shame for Manchester City losing to Barcelona, and Arsenal to Bayern Munich, home or away. Both were beat by superior sides. Much plays into success and failure in the Champions League. Domestic schedule and form, fitness, proper officiating and a bit of luck are all needed in required in Europe. Only Manchester United can be seen as a disappointment after their first leg display. And funny enough, its United, along with Chelsea with the best chances of advancing. Its all about the match-up, not which domestic league is superior. - Southamptons Luke Shaw is deserved of his call-up to England for next weeks friendly against Denmark. The 18-year old has been superior to Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole and Kieran Gibbs at left back this campaign. The future is now for England. Age should not matter. Shaw at Brazil 2014 would be a step in the right direction. William Jackson III Jersey . Saltalamacchia has agreed to a $21 million, three-year deal with the Miami Marlins, two people familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday. Jordan Evans Jersey . Simona Halep of Romania claimed the fifth title of her career by beating Samantha Stosur of Australia 7-6 (1), 6-2 in the womens final. After trading sets, Gasquet trailed 4-3 in the decider but broke back to 4-4 in a game that went to seven deuces with Kukushkin constantly failing on his forehand shots. http://www.cheapbengalsjerseyselite.com/?tag=cheap-drew-sample-jersey . Unlike last year when nobody got in, there have been estimates of as many as five getting voted in this time around and as few as one, Greg Maddux. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Mike Leake wasnt about to let this 8-0 lead get away. Jay Bruces homer helped the Reds get ahead by eight runs for the second day in a row, and Leake made this big lead stand up, pitching eight innings on Saturday for an 11-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. A day earlier, the Blue Jays pulled off the second-biggest comeback in their history. Down 8-0 after the second inning, they rallied to a 14-9 victory behind a pair of homers from Edwin Encarnacion. With their bullpen depleted, the Reds needed a solid effort from Leake (5-6), who went eight innings for the first time since May 13. "I already knew that we needed something, but its not like you can do it on command," Leake said. "My focus today was getting strike out within the first two pitches and going after them." The Reds got ahead 8-0 after four innings on Saturday against J.A. Happ (6-4), and the Blue Jays didnt have another big comeback in them. Leake had a lot to do with it, allowing the Blue Jays only four hits, including Colby Rasmus homer. "That was a character game," manager Bryan Price said. "We needed to show up and get yesterday out of our minds. One thing this team has shown all year is that it doesnt get down on itself." The Blue Jays are 9-5 all-time against the Reds, having won their four previous interleague series. Cincinnatis offence has languished near the bottom of the majors for much of the season, with Bruce and Joey Votto spending time on the disabled list. Both are back, and the Reds are starting to hit. Theyve scored at least nine runs in four of their last six games. Devin Mesoraco added a three-run homer in the seventh, his third homer in three games, as the Reds pulled away and quickly forgot about their Friday night meltdown. "Dusty (Baker) always said, Momentum is only as good as the next days starting pitcher," Mesoraco said. "Leake went out and gave us what we needed, and we were able to put some runs on the board." Happ made it easy for the Reds in the first inning, walking three batterss with two outs. Josh Tupou Jersey. Ryan Ludwick drove in two runs with a single, and another scored on Erik Kratzs passed ball. Bruces homer in the third inning gave him 47 homers off left-handers over the last five seasons, the most by any player in the majors. Bruce scored three times overall. The Reds made it 8-0 in a fourth inning highlighted by RBI doubles from Votto and Brandon Phillips. Leake singled and scored during the rally. Happ lasted only four innings and give up seven hits, eight runs and four walks. It was his shortest start of the season. The four walks matched his season high. It was the most runs hed allowed since July 13, 2012 against the Giants. "He didnt have it today," manager John Gibbons said. "We never really had a chance. It was another big deficit to overcome. It was a little disappointing after last night, but theres nothing we can do about it now." Billy Hamilton singled home a run, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games. He also stole his 31st base, the most by a Reds rookie since Chris Sabo stole 46 in 1988. After their four-homer, 16-hit splurge in the series opener, the Blue Jays went back into their hitting funk. The AL East leaders have lost 10 of their last 14 games, scoring two runs or less seven times during that span. NOTES: Johnny Cueto, who leads the NL with a 1.92 ERA, goes in the final game of the series against R.A. Dickey, who got two extra days of rest after his last start because of a sore groin. ... Both teams bolstered their bullpens before the game. The Blue Jays called up LHP Rob Rasmussen and optioned RHP Liam Hendriks. The Reds called up RHP Carlos Contreras and designed OF Roger Bernadina for assignment. Both got into the game. ... SS Jose Reyes fouled a pitch off the side of his left knee in the fifth inning but stayed in the game and popped out. He was replaced as part of a double switch in the bottom of the inning. ... The Reds had their fourth sellout of the season. Theyre 1-3 in front of sellout crowds at Great American Ball Park this season. VERNON, B. Andre Roberts Jersey .C. -- Vinny Post scored the winner at 15:32 of the third period as the Carleton Place Canadians edged the Vernon Vipers 3-2 on Saturday in preliminary action at the RBC Cup. Dylan Gareau and Adam Lloyd also scored for the Canadians (1-0-0) while Luke Edwards tacked on two assists. Colton Sparrow and Demico Hannoun supplied the scoring for the Vipers (0-1-0). Carleton Places Guillaume Therien kicked out 25 shots for the win as Vernons Austin Smith allowed three goals on 29 shots. The Canadians went 1 for 6 on the power play while the Vipers failed to score on four chances with the man advantage. In earlier preliminary action, Michael Stiliadis made 41 saves, including 16 in the final period, as the Dauphin Kings came from behind to defeat the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots 2-1. Tanner Butler put the Kings (1-0-0) on the board at 7:57 of the third period to tie the game and Jesse Bernard scored the eventual with just 1:17 remaining in regulation. Jacob Hayhurst gave the Patriots (0-1-0) a 1-0 lead early in the second period. Torontos Evan Buitenhuis turned aside 27-of-29 shots in a losing cause. Both clubs went 0 for 3 on the power play. Marcus Murphy Jersey . Sixteen teams have moved on. Sixteen teams have gone home. Lafayette Pitts Jersey . "[People] keep asking that question and its not a legit question because we dont have that right, we havent arrived yet," Casey responded. Dwyane Wade took over in the fourth quarter. He was already an entertainer. The smiles came before the passes, before the dribbles, the crosses and the shots. It was early March when Pedro Morales joined up with his new team in Vancouver and the public and his new teammates got to see what the coaching staff had warned them about. This was no ordinary DP. Morales immediately impressed. He held court with the media showing tremendous dignity and a humbleness seen so rarely when a top player arrives from Europe. The Chilean made the media smile as he tried to answer some questions in broken English, sometimes telling his interpreter that he didnt need him. It was only his first day yet it was clear he was not willing to take the easy route. That attitude quickly transformed on to the field. I brought him here to be a difference maker, said new head coach Carl Robinson. Robinson had found the crown jewel to his new system. When he was given the job last December, the Welshman already had a list written down inside a notebook of the players he wanted to target. That list was full of creative number tens, players who can play in between the lines and be the conductor of the teams offensive orchestra. In a league where the likes of Diego Valeri and Federico Higuain had starred, the head coach allowed himself to wonder what his team would be like with a similar South American in that position. Robinson knew he needed one and Morales was top of his list. Morales told the media on his first day in Canada: Set pieces are one of the virtues I have – free kicks, penalties, I hope this can help the team, Help the team? How about transform the team. Just over seven months after telling us all about his qualities, those words rang louder than ever as the DP ran towards the corner flag at a raucous BC Place on Saturday evening. The Whitecaps were on top against a stubborn Colorado team that was playing for nothing more than pride, but their dominance was not on show in the score. It remained deadlocked. Fittingly, in a season where the team couldnt get goals out of their strikers, here was a team, desperate for a goal, hoping for a moment of individual brilliance. Someone to make a difference, as the coach had said from the beginning. That is what you pay your DP players for. Moments like this. With 20 minutes left in the season, Morales adjusted his socks and took as many steps backwards as the territory would allow. He glanced towards the box and his sight was Kendall Waston, a man he has only known for three months but one he had already learned to target from dead ball situations. The two had combined last month at home to San Jose when the big defender had headed home a Morales corner just outside of the six-yard box. Morales sent this corner in closer to the goal, in the perfect place, just over the top of any defenders at the front post. It arrived with at the exact right speed for someone to meet. Andy OBrien and Erik Hurtado made the dummy runs and in behind Waston nodded it into the back of the net. Morales had delivered. At the time he was playing solely in central midfield, slightly deeper than the number ten role he had started the game in, which allowed Kekuta Manneh to come on (and win the corner) whilst the Chilean could dictate the teams tempo from deep positions. There is no doubting the brilliance of Morales further forward, linking with the wide attackers and the front man, but this season the Whitecaps fans fell in love with the playmaker because of his vision. No matter where he was positioned he had an ability to look up and spray a pass oveer a long distance to a teammates foot. Tremaine Edmunds Jersey. . The 29-year-old is a ball craver. He isnt shy to come deep to get it and many of Vancouvers successful attacks have begun when Morales has created something special from deep. In fact, for a lot of Whitecaps fans, the first memory of Morales came when he did exactly that on his debut, claiming his first assist with a delightful long-range pass for Kenny Miller to run onto. He would go on to gain 11 more assists, including the biggest of all on Saturday night. Morales was sixth in MLS this season with 6.2 long balls per match and the only outfield players ahead of him all played much deeper on the field – Wil Trapp, Will Johnson, Michael Bradley, Aurelien Collin and Tony Tchani. Despite occasionally playing deeper, he also finished the season with 2.5 key passes per game, only behind Landon Donovan, Javier Morales, Higuain, Valeri, Brad Davis and Graham Zusi who, unlike Morales, do most of their damage exclusively in the final third. Stats only tell a small part of his debut season in MLS, however. Everyone will have his or her favourite Morales moment. Sometimes you just had to be there to see it and it didnt always have to be a goal or an assist. For his teammates it is likely to be a moment away from the game. Hes a fantastic example of a proper professional, said Robinson. He conducts himself right, he talks to the younger players. In the changing room, hes dancing and singing, so hes a character. And I want characters in the squad. Anyone lucky enough to watch this group train this season will have seen just how close they are. Before a ball is kicked no one would have any idea who the most expensive player is. There was no special treatment, no arrogance and no ego from the former Malaga man. He was just one member of the squad. Yet, when Jay DeMerit retired he was the clear replacement for the club skipper. Morales doesnt need to be a vocal leader. He leads by example. He also knows where to lead to. A man who played under the guidance of world class coaches like Marcelo Bielsa and Manuel Pellegrini knows what you need to do to succeed at the top level. The Whitecaps have had a mixed bag of expensive talent since joining MLS but as every game passes the Chilean maestro is leaving behind a trail of special moments that makes him arguably the most complete player since joining the league. This is not a DP whose best days are behind him or a DP who is using the North American market to improve and get a better deal elsewhere. Morales has been a small fish in a big pond before, and perhaps has dipped in the biggest pond of all by playing at the Nou Camp with Isco against the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Those days are happily behind him. He is too good to be used as a substitute. Here he is the talk of the town wherever the Whitecaps land. The opposing coach, players and fans cannot talk about the team without raising their voice to praise the guile and creativity of Morales. This will be no different in Dallas on Wednesday night. It is the second-ever MLS playoff game for the Whitecaps but that is where the comparisons should end between this one and the game in Los Angeles 24 months ago, one they narrowly lost 2-1. That team could only have dreamt about having a player like Morales. Now he is leading the team out for their biggest match of the season.
