NEW YORK -- Atlanta Braves catcher Orinn Sears has been suspended for the first 50 games of the season following a positive drug test under the minor league drug program. The commissioners office said Friday that Sears tested positive for metabolites of Methandienone. Sears will be 23 in March. NASHVILLE -- The Tennessee Titans have hired former Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills head coach Mike Mularkey as tight ends coach on Ken Whisenhunts staff. Mularkey coached the Jaguars to a 2-14 record in 2012 and was fired at the end of the season. He also went 14-18 as Buffalos coach in 2004-05. Mularkey and Whisenhunt previously worked together as assistants with the Pittsburgh Steelers. "I am excited to back in the league," Mularkey said Wednesday in a team release announcing the hire. "I took some time off for family time. I got a chance to do some things with them, which I havent gotten to do over the last 20 years of coaching. I am definitely excited to get back and excited to get back with Ken. We go way back in our relationship, back to when we were players in the NFL and even to college when he was at Georgia Tech and I was at Florida." Mularkey worked with the Steelers from 1996-2003 and spent his last three years in Pittsburgh as offensive co-ordinator. He spent two years with the Miami Dolphins as offensive co-ordinator in 2006 and tight ends coach in 2007. Mularkey was the Atlanta Falcons offensive co-ordinator from 2008-11. The Falcons went 43-21 during Mularkeys time in Atlanta. "Mike brings a wealth of experience, both as a co-ordinator and a head coach," Whisenhunt said in a release. "Selfishly, for me, he brings a lot to the table, having been in this situation before. There are things that I will use him for moving forward that will help us a team. He has had a lot of success in this league and we are lucky to have him." Mularkey played nine seasons in the NFL as a tight end with the Minnesota Vikings and Steelers. He caught 102 passes for 1,222 yards in 114 career games. Mularkey began his coaching career as an offensive line coach for Concordia College. He worked with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a quality control coach in 1994 and a tight ends coach in 1995. "As a coach, I am diligent about the details of every little thing," Mularkey said. "I am very big into making sure my guys are prepared and I really like them to know what is going to happen before it happens. DETROIT -- Josmil Pinto was rounding third when he suddenly realized his coach was holding him up. Then he noticed something else: The throw from the outfield wasnt heading anywhere near the plate. So Pinto went home, and the comeback was only beginning for the Minnesota Twins. They scored three more runs the following inning -- thanks in part to more poor defence by Detroit -- for a 4-3 victory over the Tigers on Sunday. "A great win for us, when you take advantage of a mistake any time you can get one," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, who was ejected in the fourth inning. "Winning two out of three here against this team is good. You take them any way you can get them." CHARLOTTE - Execution breeds champions. It breeds playoff teams. It breeds winners. Dwane Casey, a champion in Dallas, knows this as well as anyone. He alluded to it 24 hours earlier. "Its (about) being in the moment (and) making big plays at the right time," Casey said Tuesday night after his team suffered an expected and excusable loss to the defending champion Miami Heat. "We put ourselves in a position to beat the best team in the league. Now the next step for our team is to be able to bust through that." A day later, when the Raptors needed it the most, execution failed them in a second loss, this time to the Bobcats, a team that won 21 games last year. By all accounts this was a winnable game, instead it became their third loss on the season, one that stings more than the others. The Bobcats rebounded the ball off a DeMar DeRozan miss with just under 26 seconds remaining and a 1.9 second difference between the shot clock and the game clock. Faced with a choice - foul and extend the game or play it out - Casey opted not to give the foul. Rookie head coach Steve Clifford called a timeout with five seconds remaining, giving both teams one final chance to talk things over but at that point Casey had already made his decision, the Raptors had made their bed. Wisely, Gerald Henderson waited until the very last moment to release a three-pointer, barely avoiding a shot clock violation and allowing the game clock to expire. "We felt like we could get one stop and then get a timeout," Casey said, standing by his decision to play out the final possession in which he hoped to force a turnover or grab a quick rebound, giving his team one last shot at the tie or a win. "That was a great lesson for us, to come out with a professional, intense approach as if were serious about winning, and we didnt do that. We left it in the hands of the last couple possessions." The Bobcats hit 15 of their 20 first-quarter shots, assisting on 11 of them and going on to outscore Toronto 32-18 in the opening frame. "We had no defensive focus whatsoever," Casey continued. "And then it kind of continued, because now they had their confidence. Instead of coming out and punching them in the mouth early, they got (into) a flow. We couldnt shut it off." "We looked like we were playing in sand," said Rudy Gay, who led the Raptors in scoring with 20 but struggled shooting the ball once again, going 8-for-21 from the field. "(Playing) slow, defensive lapses, letting easy stuff getting to the basket and things like that count at the end of the game and they creep up on you. It kind of haunted us." Regardless of the path taken, Rutherford is confident he ended up at the right destination. "I feel very strongly that weve got the right coach," Rutherford said. One whose success will depend on his ability to take Pittsburgh on extended playoff runs. Bylsma won more games than any coach in club history but was fired on June 6 after going just 4-5 in post-season series since leading the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title. Johnston understands the onus to win on a given night, but stressed the focus will be on preparing Pittsburgh for the challenges of hockey in May and June, not October or November. "The bottom-line expectation for me is that, from training camp through the first part of the season, everything we do is setting the table for the playoffs," Johnston said. "The score is relevant but its not as relevant as the habits that we are going to have to make us successful in the playoffs." Pittsburgh is Johnstons first NHL head coaching job, though he spent two previous stints as an assistant with Vancouver and the Los Angeles Kings. He said he has a bit to learn about the challenges of an 82-game NHL season, which is one of the reasons the Penguins also brought in Rick Tocchet to serve as Johnstons top assistant. Tocchet played 18 years in the NHL, including two seasons in Pittsburgh, where the four-time All-Star helped the Penguins win their second Stanley Cup championship in 1992. The 50-year-old Tocchet also spent more than a season as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2008-10. While Tocchet said that his old team has underachieved in recent springs, he doesnt see that as a stumbling block. "There are teams that wish they had (Pittsburghs) problems," Tocchet said. "The way Mike is going to coach this team, the way these guys play is high tempo. Its something guys are going to enjoy." Tocchet replaces Todd Reirden and Tony Granato, holdovers from Bylsmas staff who were let go on Wednesday. The Penguins retained goaltending coach Mike Bales and video co-ordinator Andy Saucier. Assistant coach Jacques Martin will also remain with the team in an undetermined capacity. Johnston is hardly a novice when it comes to dealing with pressure or highly skilled players. He was a part of Canadas coaching staff at the 1998 Winter Olympics, the first Games in which NHL players were allowed to compete. It led to nearly a decade as an assistant with Vancouver (1999-2006) and the Kings (2006-0 before he landed in Portland, where he spent six years helping young players navigate the choppy waters of professional life. Gilbert, 29, is a skilled defenceman whose production has fallen since his first couple years in the league, to the point that he has modest totals of three goals and 17 points in 47 games this season. Gilbert also has a minus-4 rating, while playing nearly 23 minutes per game. To his credit, Gilbert ranked best among Oilers defencemen in shot differential this season (plus-0.1, per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play; www.behindthenet.ca) while facing the second-highest level of competition. While Gilbert has size (6-foot-3, 206 pounds), he tends to play a passive game (his 1.15 hits per game this season was lowest among Edmonton defencemen), but his strength is in a puck-moving role and the Oilers have developed a couple of replacements this season, as Jeff Petry and Corey Potter have played significant roles for the Oilers. As a rookie, in 2007-2008, Gilbert scored a career-best 13 goals, then followed up with a career-high 45 points the next season, but his numbers have declined since. Going to Minnesota is a good opportunity for Gilbert, a Minnesota native. The Wilds defencemen have been the least productive group in the league this season, with 10 defencemen combining for 11 goals and 74 points on the season. Gilbert will play a prominent role for the Wild, offering improved puck skills. Gilberts cap hit is $4.0-million for the next two seasons (www.capgeek.com), making him the highest-paid member of the Wilds defence, but a fair price for a player that is capable of playing in all situations and will log 22-23 minutes per game.dddddddddddd The Oilers Get: D Nick Schultz. Schultz is a 29-year-old defensive defenceman that has established his credentials as a stay-at-home shutdown-style blueliner. Hes struggled somewhat this season, managing three points with a career-low minus-10 rating in 62 games. He also had the worst shot differential (minus-8.5 per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play) among Minnesota defencemen. Admittedly, Schultz tends to face quality opposition and has a long track record (plus-8 in 743 career games) to lean on, but Schultz offers a defensive presence that the Oilers sorely need. His 19:43 average ice time per game this season is his lowest since 2005-2006. Signed for two more years, at a cap hit of $3.5-million, Schultz will be counted on to provide stability to a unit that has been shaky, at best, in recent seasons. Edmontons ineffective defence prompted this move, but the Oilers may have overpaid, given the relative skill sets of the players involved. Since Schultz contributes so little at the offensive end, he will have to be substantially better than Gilbert defensively in order to provide equitable value. The bottom line is, individual value aside, that the Wild and Oilers both add players with skill sets that they sorely need.
