Hi Kerry, Last night, during the Anaheim Ducks-Colorado Avalanche game, there was definitely some really heated exchange between Patrick Roy and Bruce Boudreau. Do you have any memorable stories where a head coach goes after the head coach of the other team and you had to intervene? Jason Bouchard,Toronto, Ontario Jason: Patrick Roy made quite an impression in his NHL coaching debut beyond just the Avs 6-1 home victory over Bruce Boudreau and the Anaheim Ducks. If Patricks fiery history is any indicator rest assured this wont be the last outburst we see from the new bench boss. Every coach brings a unique personality, style and level of emotion to the job. Often we can look back to the type of players they were and the reputation they earned to indicate what to expect when they step behind the bench. Who can forget the Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry that qualified as hatred for one another following Claude Lemieuxs hit from behind on Kris Draper? No Saint Patrick went toe-to-toe with Mike Vernon and Chris Osgood in addition to a dust-up with Dominik Hasek that was prevented only from becoming a main event by the linesmen. No one can dispute the fact that Patrick Roy is a proven winner and champion and one of the best to ever play the game but he also brought nastiness to his game that I saw firsthand on more than one occasion. I was the referee in Patricks final game as a Montreal Canadien when Scotty Bowmans Red Wings lit him up for nine goals. Habs Coach Mario Tremblay gave the future Hall of Fame goalie the hook after Sergei Federov scored the ninth goal midway through the second period. I saw both the pride and venom in his eyes when he walked the length of the bench to have words with Tremblay and team president Ronald Corey. In Colorado one night, I was skating backwards at full speed and crossing over behind the net on a dump-in when Patrick stepped out his crease and slew-footed me with an extended pad at the goal line causing me to go airborne into the end boards. As I flew through the air I tucked my chin to my chest to protect my helmetless head from becoming the principal point of contact with the boards. My angry threat of a 20-game suspension prompted a line of defence from the goalie that it was just an "accident." That was, until I reminded Patrick that I had witnessed him do the very same thing to Referee Brad Watson in a game earlier that week! As coach of the Quebec Ramparts, his intensity, emotional outbursts and altercations are well-documented. We shouldnt expect anything different from Patrick Roy in his new location behind the Avs bench. He will still be a winner and he will still wear his emotions on his sleeve. Bruce Boudreau on the other hand was a slick, skilled centre who earned his nickname, "Gabby" for being the consummate talker. Thats putting it politely - the fact is, he never shut up! Gabby and I had many conversations on the ice when he was a player. I can see how the perfect storm resulted last night in Colorado when these two personalities collided at the end of the game. Looking back on the different personalities that I dealt with, I understood that as a player, Glen Sather got under the skin of his opponents with a sharp tongue and wit. Slats demonstrated the same style as a successful coach with the Edmonton Oilers. Many times I had to warn him not to taunt opposing players that would ultimately result in a confrontation with the other coach. Most often I had to suppress a laugh at some of the things that came out of Sathers mouth. As a young contracted NHL referee in 1974, I was assigned to swings through the WHL. Pat "Patty" Ginnell was a notorious coach whose teams terrorized opponents. Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, Kim Clackson and many other players graduated from Pattys stable. Ginnell had moved from Flin Flon to coach the Victoria Cougars when I was pressed into action one night. The Edmonton Oil Kings were the guests when a line brawl erupted followed by the benches clearing. As I was sorting out penalties I noticed coach Ginnell step onto the ice with a stick in his hand and was approaching Oil Kings coach Ken Hodge. Hodge remained on the Oil bench, but reached into the stick rack to arm himself against the impending attack. I intercepted Ginnell with the stick raised over his head, just 10 feet from Ken Hodge. I was able to talk Ginnell down before ejecting him from the game. The threat was real - and it was scary. I dont think I ever saw another coach that could get under the skin of his opposing bench boss the way Scotty Bowman could unhinge Marc Crawford, especially in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Scotty was the master of game day antics. The Avs visiting team dressing room door was painted in the afternoon with toxic enamel and greeted Crawford and his players when they arrived prior to game time on one occasion. I could smell the paint from ice-level near the Avs bench! On another occasion, the length of the players bench length was altered. When asked, Scotty would calmly reply he knew nothing of it and was just part of regularly scheduled building maintenance! In what was already powder keg matchups between the Wings and the Avalanche, Marc would scream with neck veins bulging at Scotty from a position where the two benches would meet. Once again, Scotty would have that calm little smirk on his face that would infuriate Crow all the more. When these dustups happened, my objective was to try and calm Marc since Scotty already had ice water running through his veins (and often ice cubes in his mouth from the bucket). I told Crow one time on the bench not to let Scotty get to him so much because he was playing right into the Masters hands. Like he did as a Hall of Fame goalie, Patrick Roy established himself and made a mark in his first game as an NHL coach with a well-deserved win and a game misconduct/ejection at the 20:00 minute mark. "Its two defences that you can never reconcile," Nel said as Pistorius sat behind him in the dock, occasionally flicking through documents. The once-celebrated double-amputee athlete appeared calm, in contrast to some past occasions during which he retched and wailed in apparent distress. The prosecution has argued that Pistorius intentionally shot Steenkamp before dawn on Feb. 14, 2013 after a quarrel, and argued he knew she was in the bathroom. Nel ended his closing argument by saying Pistorius was guilty of premeditated murder because he then "made up his mind" to find his gun, walk through to the bathroom and shoot. "That, my lady, is pre-planning," Nel said to the judge. Yet Nel said Pistorius should still be convicted of murder even if the court accepts he did not know it was Steenkamp in the toilet cubicle, arguing the athlete intentionally shot at and killed a person with no reason to believe his life was under threat. NEW YORK -- Major League Baseballs key witness in its case against Alex Rodriguez said he designed and administered an elaborate doping program for the 14-time All-Star starting in 2010. Anthony Bosch, the founder of the now shuttered Florida anti-aging clinic, Biogenesis, said in a "60 Minutes" interview aired on CBS on Sunday night that Rodriguez paid him $12,000 per month to provide him with an assortment of banned drugs that included testosterone and human growth hormone. Rob Manfred, the chief operating officer of Major League Baseball, said during the news program that Bosch chose to co-operate in the investigation in part because he feared for his life. MLBs suspension of Rodriguez was reduced on Saturday by an arbitrator from 211 games to 162, plus all playoff games next season. Rodriguezs lawyers plan to file a suit in federal court Monday to overturn the arbitration ruling. Commissioner Bud Selig, who did not testify during the sluggers appeal, defended the largest suspension ever handed out under the Joint Drug Agreement. "In my judgment his actions were beyond comprehension," Selig said on the show. "I think 211 games was a very fair penalty." Bosch said he began working with Rodriguez -- who was motivated by his pursuit of 800 career home runs -- five days before the New York Yankees third baseman hit his 600th homer on Aug. 4, 2010. Bosch said the first words out of Rodriguezs mouth were: "What did Manny Ramirez take in 2008 and 2009?" Ramirez was suspended 50 games in 2009 while with the Los Angeles Dodgers after testing positive for a banned drug, his first of two offences. Of the 14 players suspended as a result of MLBs investigation into Biogenesis, Rodriguez was the only one to appeal the ban. A self-taught practitioner who was once fined $5,000 for practicing medicine without a license, Bosch outlined his relationship with the three-time AL MVP. He said he designed the program to help Rodriguez maximize the effects of the drugs and remain clean in the eyes of baseball. Rodriguez never failed a test during the period in question. Detailing a clandestine operation, Bosch said the duo used code words for the drugs like "gummies" for testosterone lozenges, which Rodriguez sometimes took right before games. Bosch said he once drew A-Rods blood in the bathroom stall of a Miami restaurant. Bosch also said he injected A-Rod with banned drugs because the former No. 1 draft pick with 654 career homers was afraid of needles. Details of Boschs relationship with Rodriguez have never been made public because the Joint Drug Agreement and Collective Bargaining Agreement requires confidentiality from both sides. Rodriguezs lawyer Joseph Tacopina chastised MLB for participating in the segment -- even though he also was interviewed. "Tonights further expansion of Bud Selig and Rob Manfreds quest to destroy Alex Rodriguez goes beyond comprehension," he said in a statement. "In a clearly pre-orchestrated display, Selig and Manfred, having known for some time what the result of the arbitration would be (in light of Manfred sitting on the arbitration panel) put forth an unparalleled display of hubris and vindictiveness -- complete with Manfred appearing in tandem with the drug dealer Tony Bosch, both in full makeup, celebrating the joint victory of Boschs lies and Manfreds intimidation and payments for testimony." The players association, which filed the appeal on Rodriguezs behalf, said in a statement it was disappointed, and that they might take action. "It is unfortunate that Major League Baseball apparently lacks faith in the integrity and finality of the arbitrators decision and our Joint Drug Agreement, such that it could not resist the temptation to publicly pile-on against Alex Rodriguez," the statement said. "MLBs post-decision rush to the media is inconsistent with our collectively-bargained arbitration process, in general, as well as the confidentiality and credibility of the Joint Drug Agreement, in particular. "As a result, the Players Association is considering all legal options available to remedy any breaches committed by MLB," the statement said. Baseball said in a statement later Sunday that it had informed the players association it would respond publicly once the appeal is over. "It is ironic that the MLBPA is complaining about MLBs participation in this program given that Mr. Rodriguezs lawyer is also participating in the show," the statement said, referring to Tacopina. The 38-year-old Rodriguez has denied he ever took illegal substances after 2003 -- he admitted in 2009 he took steroids from 2001-03. He already sued MLB and Selig in October, claiming they are engaged in a "witch hunt" against him. "60 Minutes" reported it had over 500 Blackberry messages between Bosch and Rodriguez. Baseball connected the pin number of the messages to a phone owned by Rodriguez. Said one message from a phone owned by A-Rod: "Gummie at 1045am?... game at 1pm." Rodriguezs lawyers have said they were talking about nutrition in their exchanges. The news program also displayed a heavily redacted document showing a payment of nearly $50,000 from "A-Rod Corporation" to Boschs lawyer -- a sum that was returned. The payment, according to Bosch, was part of an effort by Rodriguez and his people to keep Bosch quiet. After Bosch rejected Rodriguezs request for him to sign an affidavit affirming he never gave A-Rod PEDs, Bosch says among other things it was suggested he "leave town" until the case was over. He says he was offered money and a trip to Colombia. When he rejected the trip, Bosch said his ex-girlfriend received a text in Spanish that said Bosch would not live until the end of the year. Tacopina denied it all. "Absolutely not. He didnt bribe anyone. There was no allegation that he bribed anyone," Tacopina said. "And the notion that Bosch is now coming on a television interview without the benefit of cross-examination or an oath -- is laughable." Noll delivered as promised, giving a rousing talk to a group of young players that included future Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, then a local prep star. It didnt matter that Noll might have been exhausted. It didnt matter that he had every right to cancel. That simply wasnt Nolls way. He made a promise. He had to keep it. "Thats the thing about coach Noll," Zubik said. "Everybody was important." Its a legacy that will carry on in the city Noll called home and within the walls of the franchise he defined. ARLINGTON, Texas -- When Sean Lees left leg slid out from under him and he didnt get up, teammate Barry Church figured the Dallas Cowboys were in for some bad news on the first day of off-season practice.
