a bogey and a double bogey, briefly

DENVER -- Moments after deflecting in the winning goal, Colorados Tyson Barrie did a little dance. Not bad for a defenceman. The goal, that is. Although the shuffling dance steps werent bad, either. Barrie scored 55 seconds into overtime, Semyon Varlamov stopped 29 shots, and the Avalanche moved a step closer to their first playoff berth in four years with a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night. "That was a heck of a goal," Avalanche forward Matt Duchene said. The pass was pretty good, too. Duchene dribbled the puck into the corner and sent a sharp pass at Barrie, who was standing in front of the net and tipped it past goalie Eddie Lack. "I was fortunate," Barrie said. With that, the Avs are on the verge of sewing up their first post-season appearance since the 2009-10 season. There was a scenario in which Colorado could have wrapped up a spot on Thursday, but Phoenix prevented that by beating the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in a road shootout. Colorado also remains on the heels of the Chicago Blackhawks for second in the Central Division. The Avs trail the Blackhawks by one point. "We want to finish as high as possible," said Duchene, who also scored a goal. "We arent giving anybody a break coming in." The game had a playoff feel with all the fights, thrown shoulders and scuffles in the corner. With good reason: The Canucks are trying to scratch and claw to remain in the post-season picture. Struggling just a few weeks ago, the Canucks earned a valuable point and are now five points behind Phoenix, which holds the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. But time is quickly running out for the Canucks, who have seven games remaining. "Were right there. Were still in it," said Canucks coach John Tortorella, whose team had its three-game winning streak snapped. "Were fine. Were fine in our room. Were going to keep on playing. "No bad news from me here." Daniel Sedin recorded his 800th NHL point with an assist in the first period. His twin brother, Henrik, reached that milestone on Oct. 15 at Philadelphia. Henrik didnt make the trip because of a leg injury. The Canucks showed no signs of fatigue despite playing on back-to-back nights. Vancouver kept up with the high-flying Avalanche most of the game, especially in the third period. "We were in their end zone quite a bit," Tortorella said. "We grinded. Thats a skilled team. Its a very quick team. I thought we did a really good job through the neutral zone to slow them down." Gabriel Landeskog missed a wide open net early in the second period, only to atone minutes later when he lifted a shot over the shoulder of Lack to give Colorado a 2-1 lead. The Avalanche captain has scored three times in two games. The Canucks tied it at 18:38 when Zack Kassian stopped a puck headed for the corner with his right skate, quickly corralled it and poked the puck past a sprawled-out Varlamov. Things got a little testy in the second period. It started early when Patrick Bordeleau and Tom Sestito fought. Duchene and Ryan Kesler later began shoving each other behind the Vancouver net. On the next shift, Jamie McGinn got into it with Kesler, as well. When the giant video board showed Kesler sitting on the bench, the Canucks centre made a kissing motion at the screen, drawing loud boos from the crowd. "They were playing hard," Duchene said. "They played a great game, and Varly played outstanding as usual." Yannick Weber staked Vancouver to a 1-0 lead in the first when he lined a shot past Varlamov for a power-play goal. It was his fifth goal of the season. Late in the opening period, Duchene tied it by knocking a rebound past Lack, who played for a second straight night. NOTES: Canucks F David Booth had an assist on Kassians goal, giving him four points in three games. ... Avs D Erik Johnson played in his 400th NHL game despite having the flu. ... It was Barries third OT goal of the season, tying the franchise record set by David Jones in 2010-11. ... Varlamov earned his 36th win of the season, the fourth most in franchise history. Hall of Famer turned Avs coach Patrick Roy has the record, winning 40 in the 2000-01 season. Adidas Superstar 2.0 Womens . "What Im hoping to accomplish, not only with that line, with each line, is production, just positive production and hope we can move forward," Noel said after practice. The move was telegraphed Thursday when Byfuglien wore a forwards jersey during practice, but with a couple of players out with the flu it could be explained away and Noel wouldnt confirm the change. MELBOURNE, Australia -- Norways Suzann Pettersen birdied her last three holes in a 6-under 66 on Thursday to lead the womens Australian Open by a shot after the first round at the Victoria Golf Club. Pettersen, winner of last years Evian Championships, had nine birdies and three bogeys, holding off a series of challengers led by Marion Ricordeau of France. The second-ranked Norwegian made her season debut after missing the LPGA Tours opening event last month in the Bahamas because of a shoulder injury. Shes in position to take the No. 1 spot in the world from Inbee Park with a victory or a solo second-place finish. "In the first round of the year youre always anxious to get started," Pettersen said. "It took me a while to get really comfortable, to trust what Ive been working on. "In the end the trust was stronger than the rest. I hit a lot of great shots but I also have to say I left a lot of shots out there. I three-putted a lot of greens, stupid three-putts really, but I also felt like I played good and gave myself a lot of birdie channces.ddddddddddddquot; Ricordeau, who had eight birdies, a bogey and a double bogey, briefly drew level with Pettersen before finishing among a group of four players with rounds of 67. Tied in second place were Park Hee-young of South Korea and Americans Jaclyn Sweeney and Jessica Korda, daughter of former tennis star Petr Korda and already a tournament winner this year. World No. 4 Lydia Ko of New Zealand was among a larger group at 4-under after a mixed opening round. The 16-year-old was one-under after her opening nine but came home with five birdies and two bogeys, including birdies at her last two holes. Australias Karrie Webb, a record four-time winner of the event, opened with a 71. The Hall of Famer had another brush with rules officials after being disqualified last week at Royal Pines for signing an incorrect scorecard after the second round. Webb started her round on the 10th tee Thursday and was told she had teed up fractionally in front of the tee marker. She was allowed to replace her ball without incurring a two-shot penalty. cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Roger Clemens tried to get across a sense of urgency to Houston Astros pitchers Wednesday. "If its working for you, stay with it. If its not, you need to change something. Thats something I said," Clemens said. "Obviously its not working for some of you so you need to re-evaluate what youre doing." In his capacity as special assistant to the general manager, Clemens addressed a group of young pitchers who were often overmatched last season. With a staff significantly different from the one assembled this spring, the Astros posted a 4.79 ERA while losing 111 games. "If you need to stay and do some extra work, conditioning, whatever it might be, that will make you mentally tougher than the next guy," Clemens said. "I think with all the conditioning I did throughout my career, that made me feel like I had an edge." On the eve of the teams first full-squad workout, the Astros brought in the 51-year-old, seven-time Cy Young Award winner for a morning pep talk. "I think these guys have got to realize that its not only just about them, that everybodys rooting hard and they want em to do well," Clemens said. "Obviously when they do that, a lot of people are going to start coming through the turnstiles again to watch em." Clemens pitched three of his 24 major league seasons in Houston, winning the National League ERA title in 2005 when the Astros won the pennant. The years since have been lean, especially the past three in which the Astros lost 106, 107 and 111 games. Thats one of the reasons Clemens was brought back last year, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow. "He really understands our philosophy as an organization," Luhnow said. "Hes been a part of this organization for a long time and he sees eye-to-eye with everything that were doing and is able to communicate the messages." One of the messages is to no longer accept defeat. "Theres more than a handful of guys that have an opportunity and they need to take a big step forward," Clemens said. "In spring training everybodys all giddy right now, and then you start the season and everybody gets punched in the face. Its not a lot of fun. I think theyre kind of taking the kid gloves off em a little bit and asking a lot of em to step up." The catchers, too. "I asked those guys today to step up a little bit when the pitchers not doing very well, and to get after him a little bit, see if you can stroke his emotions, get his attention so hes not lethargic out there," Clemens said. "Theres a fine line there, but its time for some of these guys to really take a giant step forward." Veteran Chad Qualls, brought in to compete for the closer job, said Clemens got his points across. "Anytime somebody with his presence steps into a room, he just kind of demands your attention," Qualls said. "You always open up and listen to what he has to say because hes been through everything, the ups and the downs. He knows exactly what hes talking about." And at some point in the spring, it will go behind talking. "At my advanced stage, I still enjoy putting the cleats on and demonstrating when I can. I like the teaching aspect, and then to turn em loose and for them to get after it," he said. "I enjoy rooting for the underdog and trying to motivate guys and answer their questions when they have them." Notes: Relief pitcher Jesse Crain strained his right calf while exercising in a gym Tuesday. The Astros are awaiting the result of an MRI. "That will be some sort of setback; I dont know how many days," Luhnow said. ... SAINT JOHN, N.B. -- Canadas Rachel Homan had ideal preparation for the playoffs at the Ford World Curling Championships with a pair of hard-fought wins over tenacious opponents Thursday. The Canadians defeated Sweden 9-6 and China 6-4 to finish atop the preliminary-round standings at 10-1. Their execution Thursday was the sharpest of the tournament so far. The games were tight with Homan and her Ottawa Curling Club teammates scoring three in the eighth ends of both. "We were really pushed today," Homan said. "It was great we were able to control the game and stay confident with this team and really nail the lines and make the big shots when we needed them. "We had to fight for our points." Homan will face Switzerlands Binia Feltscher, whose record was 9-2, in Fridays playoff game between the top two seeds. The two countries meet in the 1 vs. 2 Page playoff game between the top two seeds. (TSN, 6:30pm et/3:30pm pt) The winner books a ticket to Sundays gold-medal game. The loser drops to Saturdays semifinal. Canadas lone loss of the preliminary round was to the Swiss. It went so badly for the host country in ends five through eight that they shook hands early Sunday. "That was a little bit of a lopsided game," Homan acknowledged. "We had some misfortune, but I think were a little bit different now. Were going to know the rocks and its going to be on a different sheet and everything so I think it should be a great game." The top four teams advance to the Page playoff. Russias Anna Sidorova, Swedens Margaretha Sigfridsson and South Koreas Ji-sun Kim all finished tied at 8-3. Sidorova will play in Saturday mornings playoff between the third and fourth seeds with the winner advancing to the semifinal. Russias opponent will be the victor of Fridays tiebreaker between the Swedes and South Koreans. Sidorovas missed final shot of a game against the Czech Republic -- a draw -- prevented Russia from finishing 9-2 and playing Canada on Friday. China and Allison Pottinger of the U.S., were just outside playoff contention at 6-5 with Germanys Imogen Oona Lehmann and Anna Kubeskova of the Czech Republic ending their tournaments 3-8. Scotlands Kerry Barr and Denmarks Madeleine Dupont had 2-9 records ahead of Latvias Evita Regza at 1-10. Homan had to win a tiebreaker to get into the final four at last yyears world championship in Riga, Latvia.ddddddddddddCanada won their subsequent playoff game before losing the semifinal and then winning the bronze medal. The beauty of finishing in the top two is the loser of Fridays game can still get to the championship game, albeit via a longer route. "We love the one-two game," Homan said. "Theres not much pressure. "Either way weve got a chance at the gold-medal game. Thats what were gunning for now." The Canadians struck a balance between patience and aggression to achieve their No. 1 ranking. The average age of Homan, third Emma Miskew, second Alison Kreviazuk and lead Lisa Weagle is just shy of 26, but theyre a Canadian womens curling team ahead of the curve when it comes to the big-game experience and the lessons learned in those games. Homan, Miskew and Kreviazuk have been teammates for over a decade. Since graduating from the junior ranks four years ago, they and Weagle have played in three national womens championships -- finishing fourth and winning twice -- two world championships and an Olympic trials. "This team may be young, but weve had so much experience," said Weagle, the oldest at 28. "We realize were a young team and have really ambitious goals. We really want to accomplish them, but at the same token, if you look at a lot of the great curlers in our sport, theyre in their 30s or even their 40s when theyre at the peak of their game." Weagles talent for clearing a road to the rings and Miskews ability to execute big-weight, multi-stone takeouts allows Canada to gamble and takes some pressure off Homan. Kreviazuk banged her broom after a few misses during the preliminary round, but the four curlers have an otherwise business-like demeanour on the ice. "Were patient and were learning all the time and were allowing ourselves to learn," Weagle said. "Were not expecting to be perfect every single shot, but when were not, we want to learn from it. "Often Ill go down and talk to Rachel about my shots and how Im throwing them, if she want me to make an adjustment or if shes going to make the adjustment with the broom. I think thats worked really well for us. We want to make the most shots possible and whatever way we need to do it, its good to take the emotion out and just treat it like business." cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '

Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by an Oregon convoy, Joe Walker raced into the end zone while Utah was celebrating an apparent touchdown at the other end. It was a 14-point swing in the matter of seconds and the Utes never recovered. Marcus Mariota threw three touchdown passes and ran in another as the fourth- ranked Ducks defeated No. 20 Utah 51-27 on Saturday night. Utah was set to take a 14-0 lead after Kaelin Clay beat the Oregon secondary for what looked like a 78-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. There was just one problem. He celebrated too soon. On a 3rd-and-5 at the Utah 22, Travis Wilson fired a strike to a streaking Clay over the middle near the Oregon 40. Clay beat Erick Dargan in a foot race en route to the end zone, but dropped the ball in celebration at the 1 prior to crossing the goal line. The ball lay on the field for a few seconds as the referee never signaled for a touchdown. After a brief scuffle in the end zone and another fumble, Walker picked up the loose ball and ran 100 yards the other way along the right sideline to tie the game at 7-7. As the play was under review, Clay was in disbelief on the Utah bench and lowered his headband over his eyes as the referee confirmed the Oregon touchdown. It was the beginning of a 24 straight points for the Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12), who clinched the Pac-12 North with the victory. Oregon has won five straight since a loss at home to Arizona on Oct. 2. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Knicks fans treatment of Andrea Bargnani, Cameron Wake, the Impact bowing out of the playoffs and expanded replay for MLB. Bruce Arthur, National Post: My thumb is up to New York Knicks fans and not just for living through the Isiah Thomas era. When you visit New York, its easy to feel like youve arrived from the boonies, gawking at the skycrapers and the locals are smarter than you. Well, when it comes to basketball, theres something to that. It took Knicks fans one quarter of basketball to decide that yes, Andrea Bargnani was a player who deserved booing, as his jumpers clanked and his defence floated and his rebounding remained largely theoretical. It was Bargnani at his worst, but still: one quarter and they knew. It took years before Toronto fully turned on the former first-overall pick, as he progressed from promise to disappointment to empty calories. Eventually, the relationship turned toxic. In New York, it might be already there. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Cameron Wake, the former BC Lion, who added to a week or so of stunning finishes with a game-ending safety in the Thursday night football game between Cincinnati and Wakes Miami Dolphins. Weve seen walk-off home runs in baseball, just not walk-off safeties very often - not in the way Wake planted himself into quarterback Andy Dalton and drove him into the end zone. Its only the third time in NFL history that an overtime game has ended this way. The safety came after one World Series game ended with a pick-off and another ended on an obstruction call. Id love to tell you whats next, but honestly, I dont have a clue. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is down to the Montreal Impact, not as much for being outclassed in its MLS playoff game Thursday, but for losing without class. Of course, context is in order here. The second-year Impact actually made the playoffs, unlike, say, feckless Toronto FC. But true to its unfortunate habit, the Impact comported itself like sugared-up kids the morning after Halloween. Taking its cultural cue from (now former) coach Marco Schallibaum, who was suspended four times during the regular season, Montreal finished its playoff match in Houston with eight players. The final accounting: Three Dynamo goals and three Impact red cards. Houston, you are not the one with a problem. Dave Hodge, TSN: My thumb is up to Major League Baseball for going full speed ahead with expanded instant replay for next season. If Bud Selig needs a feather in his cap to mark his final season, that can be it. There is still potential for trouble if the finished product is too complicated, but it is time to give the umpires the help they so obviously need. Dont worry, boo-birds--there will still be room for managers to argue with them--on non-reviewable calls only--remember, not too complicated. But good for MLB if it gets it right--the NHL is advised to observe with interest and with a willingness to follow. Henry Anderson Jersey .28 for a combined time of 1:14.70, also an Olympic record. And hes not about to let up. Springer hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Astros extended their winning streak to six with a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.MIAMI -- For the Miami Heat, the third quarter was pretty much the whole story. Chris Bosh tumbled over some courtside seats on one end, and LeBron James apologized to a few fans during one particularly frustrating moment on the other. In between, Mario Chalmers gave the Heat all the boost they needed. Chalmers went on a personal 9-0 run in a 39-second span of the period, Bosh led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting, and the Heat went on to beat the Atlanta Hawks 104-88 on Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory. "We just try to get out in transition, let our defence be our offence most of the time and keep working from there," Chalmers said. Ray Allen scored 17 in his first game back from a bout with the flu. Chalmers had 12 of his 14 in the third quarter for the Heat, who were without Dwyane Wade for the second time this season. James finished with a season-low 13 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Heat (8-3), and no starter played in the final 12 minutes while backups put away the game. "Were very confident in our lineup we got, man," James said. "Those guys continue to play well. They continue to work together and its great to have a Hall of Famer in that lineup with Ray coming back." Mike Scott scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which got 12 points apiece from Al Horford and Pero Antic. Kyle Korver made three 3-pointers for the Hawks, extending his streak to 84 consecutive games with at least one make from beyond the arc, five shy of matching Dana Barros NBA record. "Its a constant battle," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said of playing the Heat. "They take away something. Hopefully you can find something else. At times we did and at times we didnt." Miamis lead was 56-54 in the third quarter when Chalmers got hot -- in a hurry. James Jones, who started in place of Wade, actually started what became a 15-2 run with a 3-pointer, and then Chalmers got going. He cut across the lane for a reverse layup while getting fouled, then made a 3-pointer from the left wing after an Atlanta turnover. Jeff Teague missed a layup on the next Atlanta possession, James wound up throwing a chest pass from about 50 feet to Chalmers, who pulled up on the catch and connected on another 3-pointer from the same spot. Justt like that, 56-54 became 68-54.dddddddddddd And Bosh provided one of the nights highlights by giving the crowd a rather comical thumbs-up after his dive into the expensive seats, plus was thrilled to learn afterward that the photo quickly made its rounds on social media. "You dont get to go in the stands much," Bosh said. Atlanta carved the deficit to 10 entering the fourth, but the Heat -- with five reserves on the court -- then showed off their depth. Allen scored Miamis first 12 points of the final quarter, Michael Beasley added the next four, and the Heat lead grew 94-78 with 5 minutes remaining, ensuring that the two-time defending NBA champions would keep their starters on the bench for the entirety of the final period. Norris Cole finished with eight points, nine assists and five rebounds for Miami. "Our starters are rooting them on," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They understand the importance of that group." Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, one where the Hawks held James scoreless for the first 16 minutes. James never really got on a sustained roll offensively, though Miami didnt need him to get there, either. James scored 10 points in the second quarter, and only three in the rest of the game. Even without Wade, and on a night Miami used its sixth starting lineup in 11 games, that didnt matter. "Theyre a great defensive team," Korver said. "They were able to really trap the ball. With LeBron in the back, theyre able to cover every passing angle - it seems like that. Nothing really feels open." Atlanta was without forward Paul Millsap, out with right elbow tendinitis. Gustavo Ayon started in his place. NOTES: Heat F Udonis Haslem had a fairly odd stat line: seven points and six fouls in eight minutes, the fastest anyone has fouled out of an NBA game since Feb. 16, 2011. Haslem had missed Miamis last four games with back spasms. ... James is now two free throws away from the 5,000th make from the line in his career. ... Spoelstra improved his winning percentage to .6617. If Miami wins at Orlando on Wednesday, he would pass legendary Boston coach Red Auerbach (.6619) on the NBAs career list, among coaches with more than 400 games. ... Atlanta finished with 22 assists, and the Hawks have had at least 20 in every game this season. cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '

WINNIPEG -- Coach Paul Maurice sounded a lot like a man who would like to try again next season the day after the Winnipeg Jets were eliminated from the 2014 playoff race. His future with the Jets is uncertain after taking over on a short-term basis mid-season from Claude Noel. But the players praised his focus and gave him credit for helping the team improve. And Maurice says he sees potential and would enjoy helping the team take the next step and continue its growth. Its been seven years since the Jets, then the Atlanta Thrashers, made their one and only playoff appearance. With Winnipegs 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday night, the Jets moved out of reach of either the Dallas Stars or Phoenix Coyotes for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The 25-year-old rookie forward scored the winner on his first career shootout attempt as the Philadelphia Flyers overcame an early deficit to earn a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. "I didnt really expect to be sent out there," Raffl said. "I was ready to hold my helmet and then I heard that I was going third and I was like nice. I really enjoyed it. "It was nice to get the chance and it going in made it even nicer. Its always nice to score a goal, and to have it be the winner was even better" Wayne Simmonds had a pair of goals and Scott Hartnell also scored for the Flyers (18-16-4), who have won four out of their last five games and snapped a five-game losing streak on the road as they started a six-game trip in Edmonton. "Weve been struggling on the road, so to start off this long road trip with a pretty solid victory is very nice," said Flyers goalie Steve Mason, who was only called upon to face 16 shots. "We just need to carry it through to our next game and keep building on this." It was the third consecutive two-goal game for Simmonds, who has seven goals in his last five outings. He was the first Flyer to have three straight multiple-goal games since Reggie Leach in 1981. "Obviously it has been a good stretch for me," Simmonds said. "Its been even better that the team has been starting to win and piling up the two points most nights. It feels good. Ive just been getting the bounces." Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and David Perron responded for the Oilers (13-24-4), who had a two-game winning streak end and have lost seven of their last nine. "It wasnt our best game thats for sure, but sometimes you have to take a look at what youve done," Hall said. "A back-to-back after a three-day break isnt necessarily the easiest thing to do. Thats not really an excuse, but when you look back at the schedule sometimes theres reasons for why you dont do well. When we have a schedule like that, we have to keep it as simple as possible and make sure were not playing a mistake-filled game." It was the first game Edmonton goalie Ilya Bryzgalov had played against his old Flyers teammates since Philadelphia bought him and his hefty long-term contract out during the summer. "I know theyre not going to quit," the goalie said of his Flyer foes. "I knew what was coming, I knew they were going to play hard and they were going to get lots of pucks to the net. Thats the style they play, aggressive. "Playing back to back nights after three days off, its not easy. I think we battled through and tried our best. Its great to get the point. Edmonton got off to a very quick start to the game, scoring on its first shot just 32 seconds in. Hall picked the pocket of Flyers defenceman Braydonn Coburn deep in the Philadelphia zone and beat Mason with a quick wrist shot high to the glove side for his 15th goal of the season.dddddddddddd The Oilers made it 2-0 four minutes into the first period as Nugent-Hopkins made a nice move at the blue-line to give himself some space and beat Mason with a shot from the slot. A couple of Oilers hit milestones with assists on the goal, as Hall recorded his 100th NHL assist and captain Andrew Ference his 200th point. The Flyers started to pick it up for the remainder of the period, but could get any of their 11 shots past Bryzgalov in the Edmonton net. Bryzgalov came up huge to start the second period as he stopped Sean Couturier on a pair of short-handed opportunities in tight, including one on a diving stick save. The Oilers have allowed a league-high eight short-handed goals this season. The Flyers got on the board three-and-a-half minutes into the second period on a power play of their own as Simmonds was able to tip in a blast from the top of the circle by Claude Giroux, who extended his point streak to eight games. Philadelphia tied the game 2-2 with eight minutes to play in the second on another power-play goal as a pretty tic-tac-toe passing display had Bryzgalov spinning around in his net before Simmonds was able to put his second of the game into a wide-open cage. Edmonton was out-shot 14-3 in the second period. The Oilers came close to regaining the lead six minutes into the third on a power play but Sam Gagner hit the crossbar and Jeff Petry a post with the man advantage. Edmonton did strike for a goal on their next power play with eight minutes remaining in the third, however, as Perron banked a short from the side of the net off Flyers defender Niklas Grossmann and into the net for his team-leading 16th of the season and 100th career NHL goal. Philadelphia came right back to tie the game 3-3 with five-and-a-half minutes left with their third power play goal as Hartnell tipped a Kimmo Timonen shot past a frustrated Bryzgalov on a five-on-three opportunity. Mason was able to keep it a tied game with two minutes left as he stoned Perron with a pivotal glove save on a breakaway with two minutes remaining to send the game to extra time. The shots favoured the Flyers 36-15 after the third period. Notes: It was the second and final meeting between the two teams this season, with the Flyers winning the first game 4-2 in Philadelphia on Nov. 9. The Flyers came into the game without a win in Edmonton since March 19, 2001a Oilers defenceman Corey Potter missed the game with a groin strain. Recent AHL call-up Martin Marincin drew in as his replacementa Flyers winger Steve Downie returned from an upper body injury and fellow forward Adam Hall was also able to dress after missing practice on Friday with the flu. Defenceman Eric Gustafsson remained out with a knee injury. cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '

Peterson, the NFLs leading rusher, left in the second quarter after being tackled on an icy field. "I really dont know too much about it. Ill find out more (Monday) after I get my MRI done, but yeah, mid-foot sprain," said Peterson, who was limping but without crutches after Minnesotas 29-26 loss. "We did X-rays, and it came back pretty clear," he said. At the time of the injury, Peterson recalled thinking, "I hope I didnt break anything; thats what it felt like." Peterson caught a short pass from Matt Cassel and headed to the right sideline. He was tackled by Arthur Brown near the Minnesota bench and immediately threw away the ball as he headed down toward the slick turf. "II havent seen the replay, but my foot was extended and kind of got rolled up, kind of like a horse-collar tackle type," Peterson said.dddddddddddd. Quinns agent, Rick Smith, told The Associated Press that Mondays interview went very well. Theres definitely mutual interest, Smith said Tuesday. The Falcons cant offer the job to Quinn until after the Seahawks play New England in the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. Atlanta fired coach Mike Smith after a 6-10 season. Quinn is the second candidate to have a follow-up interview with the Falcons. Detroit defensive co-ordinator Teryl Austin is the other. The Falcons have waited for Quinn while seeing other candidates, including Rex Ryan, hired by other teams. Ryan, the former Jets coach, joined Buffalo following his first interview with Atlanta. The Falcons also have interviewed New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels, Broncos offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase, former Bills coach Doug Marrone and Atlanta special teams coach Keith Armstrong. Seattle has advanced to the Super Bowl in each of their two seasons with Quinn as defensive co-ordinator. Quinns defence shut down Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos to win last years Super Bowl. The Seahawks granted permission for Mondays interview. I am pretty wide open and flexible in hoping that it works out, and that it wont be a distraction, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Monday.dddddddddddd There will be questions and stuff like that, but we have such a big mission that we are on, and Dan wants nothing more than doing exactly right for what we have to do these next couple of days and the next week. He has no intention other than that, and he is dead solid on that, and thats what we will get, but lots of questions will come out. While the Falcons appear willing to wait two weeks for Quinn, there are reports the team already is building a staff. The Falcons have not confirmed multiple reports the team has an agreement to hire Kyle Shanahan as offensive co-ordinator. Shanahan resigned as the Cleveland Browns offensive co-ordinator following the season. Carroll said Quinn has what it take to be a head coach. Dan has tremendous character, Carroll said. He has great leadership qualities. He is an excellent communicator. He has great experience behind him. He has worked with a lot of guys who have influenced him and helped him along the way. Hes got a competitive nature that I think he conveys. Look at what hes done to our guys. He has been a fantastic guy on our staff; he works well at this level. The players totally believe him and understand what he wants — he conveys the message. I think it will be a great step for him when the time comes. ___ cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '

MIAMI - During the dog days of the regular season, the Miami Heat often spoke about the need to not take any shortcuts on the way to the playoffs. And thats true. That doesnt mean they necessarily enjoyed the 82-game run-up to the best time of year. "None of us," Heat forward LeBron James finally confessed, "are here for the regular season." When this core of Heat players was assembled, the only stated goal was winning NBA titles, which also explains why even getting through the first two rounds of these playoffs basically unscathed only merited a short celebration. Miami is back in the Eastern Conference finals for the fourth straight season, and will visit Indiana in Game 1 on Sunday afternoon. The Heat got there by ousting the Brooklyn Nets in five games, the end of that series Wednesday night being briefly accompanied by a few hoots and hollers in the immediate moments after the clinching 96-94 win was completed. Before long, order was restored to the Heat locker room. Two series wins are nice, but they know the road only gets tougher from here. "Like LeBron said, to be in this position four years in a row, this is the reason we came together four years ago," Heat guard Dwyane Wade said. "Weve got a lot more work to do but were a team that doesnt take it for granted. Were a team that worked very hard to get to this point, so were going to go to the next round, the Eastern Conference finals and continue to do what weve done, play this game as hard as we can and try to continue to move forward." Indiana ousted Washington on Thursday night. The Heat and Pacers split four meetings in the regular season. "We know what Indianas capable of," Heat forward Chris Bosh said. "Best defence in the league. Despite their struggles, we still see the same opponent in those guys as we did last year and throughout this year." The Heat are now 32-7 in first- and second-round games in the last four postseasons, that stretch coinciding with the start of the "Big 3" era featuring James, Wade and Bosh teaming up in Miami. That first year, even that star-studded trio wasnt enough. More pieces were added, like Shane Battier a year later and Ray Allen two years later, and theyve all paid dividends since. Allen kept coming up big at big times in the Brooklyn series, hitting clutch free throws to seal Game 4 and then knocking down a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to put Miami ahead for good in Game 5. Never mind that Allen had missed 11 of his last 12 3-point tries in the series. Just like last year when he saved Miamis season with the legendary desperation 3-pointer in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against San Antonio, when the stakes were highest, Allen came through. "We did what we needed to do, when we had to do it," Allen said. "Total team effort." Miami had trailed for the entire second half of Game 5 against the Nets until that 3-pointer by Allen, a shot set up by Mario Chalmers seeing that Brooklyns Shaun Livingston was charging at him and somehow leaving the best long-range shooter in the history of the game wide open. That was the only break Miami needed. "The most important thing is to stay in the moment," Battier said. "And I dont there is anyone maybe in the history of the game who does it better than Ray Allen." Added Chalmers: "Thats a great option when you know you have the all-time greatest 3-point shooter to your left." A year ago, the Heat needed seven games to beat Indiana in the East finals, then seven more to top San Antonio for their second straight NBA title. Thursday was a rest day for Miami, maybe one of the last ones the Heat will truly have before the season ends. On Friday, the real work starts in earnest. "We still have some business to take care of," James said. "But its great to be able to put ourselves in position to get to where we want to go. We never shortcut the process. We understand that each and every game is going to be a challenge for us." Dre Kirkpatrick Youth Jersey . Gauthier had taken over as GM in February 2010 after Bob Gainey stepped down. He had been with the Canadiens since 2003, first as director of pro scouting and then as assistant general manager. "It goes without saying that were all very disappointed in our performance this season," said Canadiens owner Geoff Molson at a Thursday press briefing. "Everyone in this organization, including our players, expected better. Our fans care deeply about our team and want nothing more than a winning team, one that follows in the tradition of our storied past. This season did not deliver on those expectations. Our fans can trust that ownership will accept nothing less than a winning culture in this organization." The move came two days after the Canadiens suffered a 3-2 shootout defeat to the Panthers. Erik Cole and Louis Leblanc scored goals in regulation, but the Habs came up empty in the shootout. Carey Price made 34 saves through overtime, but did yield the game-tying goal with 7:12 left in the third period. "I just lost it. I was kinda soft on it and I should have stopped it," admitted Price of the costly letdown. "I thought our guuys played very well regardless.dddddddddddd A lot of guys are still working for jobs and contracts next year." Montreal has lost six of its past eight games overall, but aims for a third straight win over New York this evening. The Rangers won the first meeting 5-3 in New York back on Nov. 5, but the Habs outscored the Blueshirts 8-1 in a pair of encounters in Montreal. The Canadiens have won seven of their last nine versus the Rangers overall, but have lost eight of their past 11 trips to New York. With five games left to play, the Rangers own a five-point edge over the Pittsburgh Penguins for not only the lead in the division, but for the first seed in the Eastern Conference. New York is also a point back of St. Louis for the most in the NHL. The Rangers extended their lead over the Penguins after rallying for a 4-2 win over the Jets on Wednesday. Pittsburgh failed to make up the two points when it suffered a loss to the New York Islanders on Thursday. New York got goals from Brian Boyle and Derek Stepan in the third period versus Winnipeg, while Michael Del Zotto and Ryan Callahan also lit the lamp. Marian Gaborik had a pair of assists to give him five points in three games, while Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves to lift the Rangers to their fifth victory in six games. "It was tough to get anything going and then they got a two-goal lead on us," Callahan said. "I think our penalty-kill goal kind of lifted the team up and gave us momentum, and we began to take the game over." A victory for New York tonight would give the club 50 on the season, matching the 1991-92 club for the second-most in franchise history. cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '

PITTSBURGH -- Chuck Noll, the Hall of Fame coach who won a record four Super Bowl titles with the Pittsburgh Steelers, died Friday night at his home. He was 82. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner said Noll died of natural causes. Noll transformed the Steelers from a long-standing joke into one of the NFLs pre-eminent powers, becoming the only coach to win four Super Bowls. He was a demanding figure who did not make close friends with his players, yet was a successful and motivating leader. The Steelers won the four Super Bowls over six seasons (1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979), an unprecedented run that made Pittsburgh one of the NFLs marquee franchises, one that breathed life into a struggling, blue-collar city. "He was one of the great coaches of the game," Steelers owner Dan Rooney once said. "He ranks up there with (George) Halas, (Tom) Landry and (Curly) Lambeau." Nolls 16-8 record in post-season play remains one of the best in league history. He retired in 1991 with a 209-156-1 record in 23 seasons, after inheriting a team that had never won a post-season game. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993. Noll worked so well with Steelers President Rooney that the team never felt the need to have a general manager. When he retired, and was replaced by Bill Cowher, only four other coaches or managers in modern U.S. pro sports history had run their teams longer than Noll had. "Chuck Noll is the best thing that happened to the Rooneys since they got on the boat (to America) in Ireland," Art Rooney II, the former Steelers personnel chief and the son of the team founder, once said. A former messenger guard for his hometown Cleveland Browns who earned the nicknamed Knute Knowledge -- as in Knute Rockne -- Noll was an assistant with the San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Colts for nine seasons. Then he accepted what seemed a dead-end job in January 1969 as coach of the NFLs least-successful organization. Art Rooney Sr. often hired friends and cronies as coaches, and only two of the Steelers first 13 coaches had winning records. At the time Noll took over, the franchise was 105 games below .500 in its history. Noll, hired only after Penn States Joe Paterno turned down a $350,000, five-year offer, was different from any Steelers coach before him. He immediately brought intelligence, toughness, stability, confidence, character and a can-do mindset to a franchise accustomed to constant upheaval and ever-changing personnel. Asked at his first news conference if his goal was to make the Steelers respectable, Noll said, "Respectability? Who wants to be respectable? Thats spoken like a true loser." Perhaps not the most colorful coach behind the microphone, Noll could often be counted on for memorable, motivational one-liners that became rallying cries. Phrases like "A life of frustration is inevitable for any coach whose main enjoyment is winning," and "Before you can win a game, you have to not lose it," and "The thrill isnt in the winning, its in the doing," spoke volumes about what Noll was trying to accomplish. They went over well in a football-crazed region of Pennsylvania. The day after Noll was hired, the Steelers drafted defensive lineman Joe Greene. He was the first of the nine Hall of Famers selected during the Noll era. Four of the others were drafted within Nolls first four seasons: Terry Bradshaw, Mel Blount, Jack Ham and Franco Harris. Four more arrived in the first five rounds of the 1974 draft: Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth and Mike Webster. And the 1971 draft, though it produced only one Hall of Famer (Ham), generated seven starters. While the Steelers surprisingly won their opener under Noll in 1969, beating Detroit, they lost their final 13 games that season, and their first three in 1970. By then, some were questioning Nolls hiring. The Steelers turnaround began in earnest in 1970, the year they moved into the AFC after the NFL and AFL merged. They drafted Bradshaw with the No. 1 pick, moved into Three Rivers Stadium after years of being a secondhand tenant of Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field. They won five of eight during one stretch. By 1972, the year Harris arrived to give them the ground game Noll sought, they were championship contenders with an 11-3 record and a weve-turned-the-corner attitude. Noll had long since run off underachievers and pushed the Rooneys to bring in the players he wanted. "Hell argue a point with you and keep yelling, No, this is right, youre wrong," Dan Rooney said. "Sometimes you have to say, This is the way were going to do it." The first traditional playoff game in Steelers history on Dec. 23, 1972, also signalled what was to come. The Steelers were in control of the John Madden-coached Raiders most of the game, until quarterback Ken Stabler scored in the final two minutes to put Oakland up 7-6. With the Steelers down to fourth-and-10 on their side of the field, Bradshaw lofted a pass downfield intended for Frenchy Fuqua. As Fuqua and safety Jack Tatum converged on the ball, it bounded high in the air for what looked to be a certain incompletion. Instead, Harris, trailing on the play, caught the ball nearly at his shoe tops and raced into the end zone for an improbable touchdown. The play would quickly become known as the "Immaculate Reception." Nolls Steelers did not win the Super Bowl that season -- they lost to unbeaten Miami on a fake punt in the AFC title game. But, with their roster completed by their remarkable 1974 draft, they finally became NFL champions and did it three more times by January 1980. Still, Nolls best team might have been in 1976, when the Steelers rebounded from a 1-4 start to go 10-4 -- even with Bradshaw injured and out most of the season -- by playing the greatest stretch of defence in NFL history. The Steel Curtain shut out five of their final nine opponents while yielding only 28 points. At one point, they didnt allow a touchdown for 22 quarters. However, Harris and Rocky Bleier, 1,000-yard rushers that season, were injured in a playoff game against Baltimore. Without a running game, they lost the AFC title to Oakland. A year later, Noll wound up in a federal court trial. He accused Raiders defensive back George Atkinson, who had levelled Swann with a brutal hit the season before, of being part of the NFLs "criminal element." Noll prevailed, but there were hard feelings when, under oath, he included Blount as also being part of that criminal element. The Steelers went 9-5 that season, but rebounded to win the championship in the 1978 and 1979 seasons. When all the talent began to retire, the championships ended. Great drafts gave way to poor ones. The Steelers won only two playoff games and no conference championships in Nolls final 12 seasons, missing the post-season eight times. Noll never was much of a yeller or screamer, though he had his moments. He confronted Oilers coach Jerry Glanville at midfield and warned him about the teams borderline-legal blocking techniques. "He didnt feel like it was his job to motivate," Bleier said. "It was his job to take motivated people and give them a direction and get the job done." When he retired, Noll always said he would never coach another team and he didnt. In 2007, the football field at St. Vincent College, the Steelers longtime training camp home in Latrobe, was named for Noll, even though he played at and graduated from Dayton. Born in Cleveland, Noll attended Benedictine High School, where he played running back and tackle, winning All-State honours, before gaining a scholarship to play for the Flyers. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburghs biggest, most traditional rival, in 1953. At 27, he retired as a player from the Browns in 1959. MADRID, Spain -- A second-half goal from Luis "Pizzi" Afonso earned Espanyol a 2-1 victory at Malaga in the Spanish league on Tuesday, while Elche held fourth-place Athletic Bilbao to a 0-0 draw. Cristian Stuani laid the ball off for Sergio Garcia to smash home an angled shot as Espanyol took the lead in the 32nd minute. Malaga levelled two minutes later despite Pablo Perez being offside when he collected the ball before lifting a shot over goalkeeper Francisco Casilla. Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero made a number of key saves but couldnt reach Pizzis winner in the 75th. Malagas rally was stalled when Perez was red carded moments later. "An important win for ensuring we stay up in the first division," Garcia said after Espanyol reached 40 points to go provisionally eighth. Athletic, which currently holds the final Champions League qualifying spot, provisionally stretched its advantage over fifth-place Sevilla to nine points. Sevilla hosts Real Madrid, which is looking to rebound from its weekend defeat to Barcelona, on Wednesday. Neither team dominated at the Elches Martinez Valero Stadium, with Bilbao coming close in the 16th when goalkeeper Manuel Herrera palmed Ander Herreras curling free kick over the bar. The hosts best chance came in the 72nd when Christian Herrera cut a shot back across the box but it ran wide of the far post. Elche moved three points clear of 18th-place Getafe and the drop. "The weather didnt help, the pitch didnt help, neither team played great," Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera said. "I think we could have offered a better performance." Atletico Madrid leads the standings with 70 points, the same as Madrid but it enjoys the tiebreaker. Atletico plays Granada on Wednesday, when Barcelona faces Celta Vigo. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The owners of California Chrome are putting all their hopes into the chestnut colt to win the Kentucky Derby. After all, hes the only horse they own. California Chrome, based at lesser-known Los Alamitos racetrack in suburban Los Angeles, is the early 5-2 favourite for Saturdays 140th Derby with good reason. He has won four straight races by a combined 24 1/4 lengths under Victor Espinoza, who won the Derby in 2002 with War Emblem. "Hes so light on his feet," Espinoza said. "He just does things so easy and makes my job easy." California Chromes owners, Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, are no Kentucky blue bloods. Theyre a couple of working stiffs who live near Reno, Nevada. A trainer called them "dumb asses" for getting into the racing game, inspiring the duo to put the letters DAP on their silks, which stands for Dumb Ass Partners. "Were going to go down in history," Coburn predicted. California Chrome is the product of an $8,000 mare and a $2,500 stallion. Hes earned more than $1 million already, making it somewhat easier for Coburn and Martin to turn down a pre-Derby offer of $6 million for a 51 per cent stake in the horse. "Weve been blessed with this colt," Coburn said. "The first time we saw him, we knew it was going to be something special." If their tale seems improbable, well, its happened before at Churchill Downs. Mine That Bird, a 50-1 shot owned and trained by two guys from New Mexico mocked as cowboys, pulled off the stunning upset in the 2009 Derby. At 77, Art Sherman, who oversees California Chrome, would be the oldest trainer to win. His colt would be the first California-bred to wear the garland of red roses in 52 years. "Hes feeling good and hes doing good," Sherman said. "Hes coming up to this race right." Rosie Napravnik wants to grab history, too. No female jockey has won the Derby, although she came closest -- fifth last year. Napravnik will ride 20-1 shot Vicars In Trouble. Her husband, Joe Sharp, works closely with the Louisiana-bred colt as assistant to trainer Mike Maker. "The story wouldd almost be too good if we won it," she said.dddddddddddd Wicked Strong is the early 6-1 second choice. The colt is named for the victims of last years Boston Marathon bombings and is trained by Jimmy Jerkens, who has his first Derby horse. Trainer Todd Pletcher has four horses in the Derby -- Danza and Intense Holiday are both 8-1 while his other two are longer shots, 30-1 Vinceremos and 50-1 We Miss Artie. Danza is named for "Taxi" actor Tony Danza, who planned to attend the Derby. Maker will saddle three horses, all long shots. Besides Vicars In Trouble, he has 15-1 General a Rod and 50-1 Harrys Holiday. "When those gates open, anything can happen," Maker said. Three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert is down to 20-1 shot Chitu after being forced to scratch early second favourite Hoppertunity because of a minor foot problem. "California Chrome has proven hes a really good horse," Baffert said, adding, "Theres a lot of parity in this field. Everybody might have a chance." Getting the ideal trip in the 1 1/4-mile Derby is important, especially with the traffic from 19 horses making a chaotic charge into the first turn. Jockeys want to avoid anything that would prevent their horse from getting into rhythm, like being bumped, cut off or blocked. Sherman believes the key is the first 70 yards. "You want to get out and get yourself some position," he said. Trainer Steve Asmussen takes a shot with Tapiture, who started three times at Churchill Downs as a 2-year-old. Asmussen is under investigation by Kentucky and New York racing officials after an animal rights group alleged he and his former assistant mistreated horses in their care. The forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 73 degrees, with a crowd of at least 140,000 expected. Keep an eye on jockey Calvin Borel. He and 15-1 shot Ride On Curlin will break from the No. 18 spot in the starting gate. Borel will try to hustle the colt over to his favourite path on the track -- the rail. The rider nicknamed "Bo-rail" for his fence-skimming rides has three Derby wins in the last seven years. cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Hornets revealed what they will look like on the floor next season -- at least from a fashion perspective. The Hornets unveiled their three new primary uniforms on Thursday featuring white, purple and teal colours. The uniforms bear a strong likeness in colour scheme to the old Hornets regime but have been slightly modernized. Pete Guelli, the Hornets chief marketing officer, said the process was about building a brand identity for the organization. "Each step of the way we tried to mindful about connecting the original Hornets with the modern DNA," Guelli said. "We knew we could never go back to the original logo. We wanted to reflect the heritage and evolve the brand that left the 12 years ago." The home white and away purple uniforms both read "Hornets" on the front, instead of "Charlotte" as in years past. The alternate teal uniform, which will be worn 16-20 times per season at both home and away games, has "Charlotte" written across the chest. The home and away uniforms represent a change from when the Hornets were here last from 1988-2002. Back then, all of the teams uniforms read "Charlotte" across the chest. Hornets senior vice-president of marketing, entertainment and Interactive media Seth Bennett said it was no longer necessary to emphasize the citys name. "In 1988, a lot of people needed to know who Charlotte was, but thats no longer the case," Bennett said. "Our community has grown. People recognize Charlotte as an international city." Bennett also said fans had pushed for Hornets on the front in the research the team conducted. Another noticeable change is the team did away with the popular teal pinstripes down the front of their home uniform and pleats, instead going with a cleaner, block-letter design with thicker stripes down the left side of each uniform. The Hornets focused on simplicity. "We didnt want to be trendy, we didnt want to be loud. I think this connects the two eras," Bennett said. Hornets owner Michael Jordan had input on the design of the uniform. "He wanted something high-performance. Something our players would be proud to wear," Guelli said. Although the uniforms are Adidas as per NBA policy, it was Nikes Jordan Brand that designed and worked on them for more than a year. The team announced fans can start pre-ordering replica jerseys in August, but the uniforms wont be available in the team store until late September. adidas zx flux comprar . -- The New England Patriots have re-signed veteran defensive lineman Andre Carter He had 10 sacks for the Patriots in 2011, his only season with them, and was chosen to his first Pro Bowl. nike free 4.0 v2 precio . FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS 1. STEVE NASH and STEVE BLAKE (Lakers): Both players are back in the lineup Tuesday against the Timberwolves. Blake had played quite well before he went down and, fingers crossed, Nash (who turns 40 on Friday - Happy Birthday!) tries to see if he can play through Back pain and finish the season. This Lakers season has not gone well with the loss of Dwight Howard, the injury to Kobe Bryant, and of course injuries to Blake and Nash. At the end of the day, this is a franchise that doesnt deal well with losing seasons yet it might be a time to re-invent themselves for the long haul. How these two guys hold up will give them better insight into where things are headed, at least short term, in their backcourt. 2. PAUL GASOL (Lakers): Speaking of this franchise, I think this ship has sailed here. If you can get cap space, luxury tax relief and/or a draft pick, you move him. He still has value, yet I see it diminishing despite him averaging close to 20 points and 12 rebounds a game in January. There is a lot of chatter about the Phoenix Suns making a run at him. Itll be interesting to watch it unfold but bottom line, it would be best for Gasol and the Lakers for him to have a change of scenery. 3. GREG MONROE (Pistons): There are rumblings from the Motor City that they need to look long and hard at what to do with this guy. I really like his game. When given the proper system and supporting players, I feel he has the attributes to help you win. Is he a franchise guy? No, but a very good player? Yes. Hes a positive building piece. I dont see how he can co-exist long-term with Josh Smith and Andre Drummond. Im not a huge Smith fan, nor am I big on the Brandon Jennings bandwagon. These are guys that will get you numbers but Im not sure if they understand what it takes to win on a nightly basis. Monroe can score in the post and has a solid face up game, he can really pass it and his rebounding and lane presence is sound. The Pistons need to figure out what their identity is because right now I see a team with a lot of parts yet with no semblance of the whole in mind. This is a team sport and when I watch them they dont look like one. Monroe is one of the few guys that gets how to play the team game. 4. RAPTORS at KINGS: Youll hear all the coach and player speak about it being ‘just another game. I dont buy it for one minute. Any time someone trades you, to some degree theyve given up on you and think they can do better with someone else, thats the reality of sports. The Raptors have benefited greatly with the acquisition of the Sacramento Four while Rudy Gay has played quite well for the Kings. Good for both sides. I expect a very intense game here tomorrow night in Sac-town. Cant wait. More importantly for the Raptors, its a chance to clinch a winning west coast trip (currently 2-1) with a win here before heading to LA to play the very difficult Clippers on Friday. Take care of business. Wont be easy, a lot of emotion will be present. 5. CONGRATS SEATTLE: I have buddies from Buffalo that hit a Super Bowl city each year. Unfortunately, Ive never been able to attend before. This year it worked. I was in Portland on Saturday night and went over to Seattle on Sunday morning before heading over to Salt Lake City to work the Raptors/Jazz game on Monday. My Super Bowl Sunday in Seattle was a total blast. A few quick observations: First, for the Raptors game in Portland, it was a wonderful turnout of Raptor fans from Vancouver area who made the drive over. Awesome support! And secondly, what a joke that an amazing sports town like Seattle doesnt have an NBA team right now. Everywhere I went I saw not only 12th Man signs for the Seahawks but Bring Back our Sonics signs. I couldnt agree more. And finally, once again, I ran into a ton of folks from Vancouver, this time while I was in Seattle. Fun time watching the football game with them and their passion for hoops as well. Ive said it a thousand times before and Ill say it again, weve got to get a team back in Vancouver as well. I travel all around North America and I feel pretty confident saying this, I have a very good sense for what makes a town a good fit for the NBA and there is NO doubt that Seattle and Vancouver fit my profile a whole lot better than many of the current NBA cities. You can fill in your own blanks. Maybe with a new NBA Commissioner in Adam Silver, this topic can be revisited again. It makes too much sense to me. Likely wishful thinking on my part. (Sports Network) - The Baseball Writers Association of America will hand out their first two postseason awards on Monday, as the American and National League Rookies of the Year will be announced. It appears to be a two-man race in each league, as Atlanta teammates Craig Kimbrel and Freddie Freeman are the clear cut front runners in the NL, while Kansas City first baseman Eric Hosmer and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim first baseman Mark Trumbo highlight a deeper AL ballot. Kimbrel put forth the best first year ever by a closer, as he set a rookie record with 46 saves and recorded 127 strikeouts in 77 innings. He limited opponents to a .178 batting average and recorded 14.84 strikeouts per nine innings, joining Carlos Marmol (2010), Eric Gagne (03) and Billy Wagner (1998 and 99) as the only pitchers to post at least 14 strikeouts per nine innings and notch at least 30 saves in the same season. However, one thing that could hurt him is the fact that he blew three of his last six save opportunities, including one on the final day of the season that could have put his Braves into the postseason. Should that be a deciding factor then the award will likely fall to Freeman, who was the most consistent hitter for the Braves this season. The 21-year-old batted .282 with 21 homers and a .795 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. Freeman led NL rookies in batting average, hits (161), doubles (32), homers, RBI (76), on-base percentage (.346) and slugging percentage (.44. Either way the award figures to go to a Braves rookie for the first time since Rafael Furcal in 2000. Others who figure to be in the mix include Phillies right-handed pitcher Vance Worley, Braves righty Brandon Beachy and Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa Over in the American League its almost as sure with Hosmer and Trumbo leading the pack, although a trio of starting pitchers could have a say as well. Hosmer came up in early May and immediately made an impact. He swatted 19 home runs while driving in 78 runs and finishing first among AL rookies in runs (66) and hits (153). He also collected 27 doubles, making him the 27th player in history to hit at least 17 home runs and 24 doubles at the age of 21. Not to mention his .293 average was nearly 40 points better than Trumbos. Trumbo, who was the Sporting News choice for top rookie, burst on the scene after six years in the minors and belted 29 home runs with 87 RBI. He only batted .254, but his home-run total was the highest by an AL rookie since Nomar Garciaparra hit 30 for the Red Sox in 1997. His 149 games played were also most among all AL rookies, If offense isnt your thing there are certainly a few pitchers to choose from, as righties Jeremy Hellickson from Tampa, New Yorks Ivan Nova and Seattles Michael Pineda all figure to get some votes. Hellickson was the ALs top rookie as chosen by Baseball America after going 13-10 with a 2.95 ERA in 29 starts. Nova won 16 games and pitched to a 3.70 ERA for the Yankees despite a stint in the minors and won his final 12 decisions, which included an eight-game winning streak. Pineda, meanwhile, was an All-Star and ended the year with a 3.74 ERA, but seemed to run out of steam in the second half. John Cassaday, CEO of Toronto based radio and television broadcaster Corus Entertainment, has been approached by MLSE and discussed the position with company officials, a person familiar with the matter confirmed to TSN. Cassaday, who once worked for former MLSE CEO Richard Peddie, is well known and highly regarded in the Toronto media industry. Besides being CEO of Corus, whose assets include YTV, HBO Canada and Treehouse, Cassaday sits on the boards of Sysco Corp. and Manulife Financial Corp. Cassaday is a proven leader, said a person close to the MLSE board. He has handled a publicly traded company in Corus, its board and family ownership issues flawlessly. He is stable. A sure hand on the tiller. And hes mature and knows how to manage divisions and factions within a company. And hes Canadian and probably is looking for a change before he retires. Cassaday is 60 and once worked for Richard Peddie at General Foods, now known as Kraft Foods. Now, Peddies brother Thomas Peddie works for Cassaday at Corus. MLSE plans to bring finalists for the Leiweke job into Toronto this week for interviews. The company would like to decide on his successor within the next week or so, a source told TSN. Neiither Cassaday nor his media relations staff responded to phone messages or emails seeking comment.dddddddddddd While Cassaday is an experienced Toronto broadcast executive, its also worth asking whether his skill set lends itself to MLSE, which is shrinking its broadcast business and turning it over to the companys owners, Bell and Rogers. As previously reported by TSN, other executives approached by MLSE to succeed Leiweke include former Madison Square Garden executive Hank Ratner, NHL executive John Collins and CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon. Neither Collins nor Cohon are seen as favourites for the job. Collins has helped to build the NHLs business through savvy marketing and a host of outdoor hockey games, but also was instrumental in awarding the NHLs Canadian TV rights to Rogers Communications. That might complicate his hiring, since Rogers jointly owns MLSE with its competitor Bell Media, which also sought those rights. Bell is TSNs parent company. Cohon, meantime, has led the CFL through a period of relative peace, negotiating a larger TV contract with TSN in 2013, but has also been the leagues chief executive during a time when the Toronto Argonauts, the countrys largest media market, have struggled to grow interest from fans and sponsors alike. According to Canadian Business magazine, Cassadays compensation during 2013 was about $4.7 million. Billed as one of the biggest fights in British boxing history, the second installment of Carl Froch vs. George Groves has the ingredients of a classic. Now it just has to live up to the expectations. Saturdays fight for Frochs IBF and WBA super-middleweight titles will take place at Wembley Stadium in front of a record British boxing crowd of about 80,000 fans. It features an established champion against a young pretender and a score to settle after a controversial first fight. The rematch has been a promoters dream because of the dramatic first fight in Manchester last November. The 36-year-old Froch -- arguably Britains top boxer of the past five years -- was knocked down in the first round and exposed for more than half the bout by an upstart 11 years his junior. In the ninth round, Froch finally landed some meaningful punches of his own to leave Groves wobbling, but the challenger was still on his feet when the referee stepped in to end the fight. With the crowd howling in derision, it was an unfortunate way to end a memorable fight. It was no surprise that the IBF ordered a rematch after Groves made a complaint, and the clamour for Froch-Groves II was already irresistible. There will be unfinished business in London, with Groves intent on sending Froch into retirement. "Weve been working on left hooks," Groves said Thursday. "We know the left hook will work and it will be the left hook that finishes Carl Froch on Saturday." Froch was riled by the in-your-face approach of Groves during the buildup to the Manchester fight, but he clearly underestimated his rival. He ended the fight with a bruised and puffy face, his reputation slightly damaged but still with a win on his record. Robert McCracken, Frochs trainer, revealed after the fight that he knew Froch would have trouble with Groves awkward style and fast start. Groves dominated the centre of the ring, hounding Froch, and will look to do the same again on Saturday. "I gave him the advantage in the first fight, allowed him to get comfortable and let his shots go," said Froch, who has a 32-2 record, including losses to Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward, and is contesting his 12th world title fight. "I took too many steps back but I wont be taking a backward step in this fight." Groves was jeered into the ring in Manchester and cheered out of it after his gutsy performance, which couldnt prevent a first loss in 20 professional fights. On Saturday, hell be fighting in his home city and will likely be the fans favourite. The fight has captured the British publics imagination, so much so that Wembley -- the home of English football -- was regarded as the only setting big enough to satisfy demand. The old Wembley hosted an unforgettable fight between Muhammad Ali and Henry Cooper in 1963. The last fight at Wembley was in 1995, when Frank Bruno beat Oliver McCall in a 12-round unanimous decision to capture the world heavyweight title. Many members of Englands World Cup squad will be present. As will Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, and her rugby-playing husband Mike Tindall. Its considered the biggest grudge match in British boxing since the days of the Nigel Benn-Chris Eubank rivalry in the early 1990s. "Its got that air about it, the air of importance," Froch said. "With it being at the national stadium its obviously big. This is by far the biggest fight of my unbelievable career. "Its giving me the motivation and giving me the apprehension I need to perform at my best." Nike Air Max 1 Cheap ., to Washington, D.C., to watch their son Tanner pitch in the Nationals home opener. Andrus understood trying to take down Seattle ace Felix Hernandez required being aggressive just to get one run. "Especially when you face a guy like that, when hes on, its going to be hard," Andrus said. "For whoever is hitting its going to be hard to get good contact, a base hit." Locked in a scoreless tie, Andrus singled, stole two bases and scored on Adrian Beltres infield grounder in the ninth as the Rangers did just enough against Hernandez for a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Andrus singled with one out, then proceeded to steal second and third base. The second stolen base came as Shin-Soo Choo walked on a 3-2 pitch from Hernandez and was the final batter for Seattles ace. Closer Fernando Rodney entered and got Beltre to hit a grounder into the hole at shortstop. Brad Miller fielded the ground ball and was able to get Choo at second, but Robinson Canos turn on the double play attempt was rushed and the throw was wide. Beltre was safe, Andrus scored and Texas got the run it needed. "The difference was the base hit to Andrus and he stole the two bases," Hernandez said. "That was the difference of the game." Texas handed Hernandez (8-2) just his second loss of the season and the Rangers have now handed him 21 of his career losses. "Its just a win. We see King Felix a lot so its just a win," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "I wouldnt put any more credence to it than what it was." Matching Hernandez was Texas starter Nick Tepesch and a trio of relievers. Tepesch threw 6 1-3 innings, Jason Frasor finished off the seventh, Shawn Tolleson (2-1) got through the eighth and Joakim Soria pitched the ninth for his 14th save. Texas posted its 13th shutout and fourth 1-0 victory this season. Seattle lost its fourth straight. Tepesch matched Hernandez all night. He faced the minimum through five innings and used just 47 pitches to set down the first 115 batters.dddddddddddd The only batter to reach for Seattle was Mike Zunino with a single leading off the third inning. Zunino lined a ground-rule double into the Mariners bullpen leading off the sixth, the first baserunner by either team to reach second base but was left stranded at third. Tepesch started struggling in the seventh. With two on and one out, Tepesch was lifted in favour of Frasor who struck out pinch-hitter Endy Chavez looking and Dustin Ackley swinging to end the inning. Tolleson worked a perfect eighth to get the victory. Soria then shut down the top of Seattles order in the bottom of the ninth. He struck out James Jones, got a groundout from Kyle Seager and Cano grounded back to the mound for the final out. "I dont really try and focus on who I am throwing against," Tepesch said. "Its more about the hitters Im facing. I cant control his throwing or how well theyre going to throw or maybe theyre going to have a bad day. Its just controlling what I can control." Hernandez was coming off a career-best 15 strikeout performance in his last outing against Tampa Bay. Hernandez dominated the Rays, but didnt get the victory because Seattles offence failed to score while he was on the mound. An identical scenario played out against Texas. Hernandez was just as dominant -- minus the strikeouts -- and the Mariners again failed to provide their ace any runs. Hernandez was at 98 pitches beginning the ninth. He finished with six strikeouts, four hits allowed and one run. It was an improvement over his last start against Texas when he gave up three runs in six innings. "Big deal. It was still a lousy game," Hernandez said. NOTES: Seattle OF/DH Corey Hart (hamstring) hit on the field before the game for the first time since being injured on May 18. ... ARLINGTON, Texas -- Prince Fielder ended his Texas home run drought, and Robbie Ross finally got some help from the offence as a starter. Fielder and Kevin Kouzmanoff hit back-to-back homers, Ross limited Seattle to five singles in seven-plus innings and the Texas Rangers beat the Mariners 5-0 Tuesday night. Fielder ended a 13-game homerless streak to start the season with a line drive to right-centre field off former Texas first-round pick Blake Beavan (0-1) to lead off the second inning. Two pitches later, Kouzmanoff went deep to left. Told before the game that he was a game away from tying the longest drought to start a season in his career, Fielder casually figured it was about time for a long ball. "I was just messing around," said Fielder, in his first season with the Rangers after a trade that sent fan favourite Ian Kinsler to Detroit. "But I guess it worked." The Mariners didnt get a runner past second base in their third shutout loss in a week. "Probably the first night where I was probably a little disappointed in our approach a little bit," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I thought we should have done better." Kouzmanoff also had two doubles, the second one driving in two runs to put the Rangers up 4-0 in the eighth inning. Fielder scored from first base after he was intentionally walked following a pair of strikeouts. Ross (1-0), a former reliever, got his first win as a starter in his third try as the Rangers recorded their third straight win by shutout and fourth in seven victories overall. Fielders homer was the first run the Rangers scored with Ross on the mound. He had gone 12 1-3 innings without Texas scoring, tops in the majors. "Its funny because Im just trying to go out there and do the best I can to keep it close because I know were going to start scoring," said Ross, who has allowed two earned runs in 18 innings as a starter. Ross struck out Abraham Almonte and Brad Miller to start the game, but didnt have another strikeout. After Robinson Cano and Corey Hart followed with singles, Ross ended the first inning on Stefen Romeros groundout to short -- the first of seven straight outs on grounders and 16 overall. The left-hander didnt walk anybody in 7 2-3 innings, but hit Miller with a pitch twice. The second one made Cano the potential tying run in the eighth, but Ross got him on a flyout to centre before Alexi Ogando replaced him. "I think he was able to get in on us and I guess kind of mix it up," Miller said. "We really just didnt string together our good at-bats often, but credit to him." Beavan was called up from Triple-A Tacoma to fill in for rookie left-hander James Paxton, who is out with a strained muscle in his back. He gave up six hits -- the other four besides the homers were singles -- in four innings with one strikeout. He came out for Dominic Leone because of shoulder soreness. The right-hander who grew up in nearby Irving spent most of last season with Tacoma after losing his spot in the rotation after two starts. It was his first start since April 10, 2013, and first appearance since a relief outing last July 9. NOTES: It will be a battle of aces Wednesday night when Seattles Felix Hernandez facing Texas Yu Darvish. The Japanese right-hander is the first AL starter since Hernandez in 2007 to begin the season with two starts of at least seven shutout innings in April. Darvish lost to Hernandez twice during his rookie season in 2012. They didnt face each other last year. ... The Rangers had multiple homers in a game for the first time this season. They went deep just twice in their first seven home games. ... The Mariners had a double play that went down as a routine 6-4-3, but was far from it. The ball caromed off shortstop Millers glove straight to Cano just as he was getting to second base, and Cano made the easy throw to first. CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert got in one final shot after LeBron James fell short of an NBA title. About 15 minutes after the Dallas Mavericks defeated James and the Miami Heat in Game 6 on Sunday night, Gilbert sent a message on his Twitter page to Mavericks owner Mark Cuban -- a statement that included a jab at James. "Congrats to Mark C.& entire Mavs org.," Gilbert wrote. "Mavs NEVER stopped & now entire franchise gets rings. Old Lesson for all: There are NO SHORTCUTS. NONE." Last summer, after James announced he was leaving the Cavs as a free agent after seven years to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami, the superstar was lambasted by Gilbert, who accused him of quitting in the playoffs the past two seasons. Gilbert also promised tthat karma would prevent James from winning a championship and predicted his Cavaliers would win their first title before "the self-proclaimed King" won one.dddddddddddd So far, Gilberts pledge is holding up. Gilbert wasnt the only one stung by James decision. Cleveland fans, who havent celebrated a major professional sports championship since the Browns won an NFL title in 1964, spent the past year coping with James departure, which the Akron native announced in a one-hour long TV special. Some of James former teammates were also hurt by him leaving. Guard Mo Williams, who was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in February, said the Mavericks victory has helped ease some of his pain. PHILADELPHIA - Despite his diminutive size, Jimmy Rollins always believed he could hit a baseball. Turns out hes been good enough to amass more hits in a Phillies uniform than any other player. Rollins singled in the fifth to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt to become the Phillies hits leader and Domonic Brown capped the inning with a three-run homer, leading Philadelphia to a 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Rollins got hit No. 2,235 off Edwin Jackson, sending a 3-1 pitch into right field to open the fifth. The game was then delayed for an on-field celebration. "It was very cool," said Rollins. The 5-foot-8 shortstop never let his stature deter him. "Thats something my mom and dad taught me when Im young," he said. "(Im) probably not going to be biggest guy, but that doesnt mean you have to be weak, doesnt mean you dont have confidence. And then size isnt really going to matter. Ive always had that belief in myself and without it I wouldnt have been here." Chase Utley also homered for Philadelphia, which has won four of five following a dismal 1-8 stretch. David Buchanan (2-3), in his fifth start for injured lefty Cliff Lee (elbow), allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. But the day belonged to Rollins. He made his debut with the Phillies on Sept. 17, 2000, and has played his entire career in Philadelphia. "To be the all-time hits leader, that speaks for itself," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "It was well worth it. Fourteen years of effort with one uniform in a lot of ways thats old school." Said Cubs manager Rick Renteria: "Hes put together what is potentially a Hall of Fame career. Hes a credit to Philadelphia and the Phillies. I think hes admired all over." Schmidt, a Phillies TV analyst for Sunday games, retrieved Rollins bat and greeted the 2007 NL MVP with a high-five and hug at first base. The entire Phillies team then came out from the dugout to offer congratulatory hugs and handshakes. After the Phillies left the field, Schmidt took Rollins hand and held it in the air. Fans cheered and gave the duo a standing ovation as fireworks erupted from the large video board in left field. "I told him, Congrats, it couldnt happen to a better guy," Schmidt said later in the game. "Im glad I was here. My heart is pounding." Schmidt had doubts that any player would break his hits record in notoriously tough Philadelphia and in the era of free agency. But Rollins mentality on and off the field, Schmidt says, allowed him to do it. "Hes very comfortable in his own skin," Schmidt said. "Hes got a nice, short stride and stays relaxed (at the plate). Hes a great clutch hitter, tremendous . much better than me. One of the great compliments you can pay a hitter is (to) say I want him up when the game is on the line." Schmidt said Rollins should get "definite consideration" for the Hall of Fame right now and believes Rollins could land in Cooperstown with continued solid play for three or four more years. "He knows talent, thats pretty cool," Rollins said. Schmidt also knows hitting. Upon leaving the field, Schmidt was stopped in the dugout by the slumping Brown, who asked for a hitting lesson. Schmidt said he told Brown to drive through the ball with his left hand. Minutes later, Brown broke the game open with a three-run homer to right, his fourth of the season after hitting 27 last year, that put Philadelphia ahead 7-3 and chased Jackson (4-7). Rollins received strong ovations when he came to the plate his first two at-bats, but he grounded out to first base in the first inning and lined out sharply to first in the second. He finished 1 for 4. Justin Ruggiano, Luis Valbuena and Mike Olt homered for Chicago. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances. Jackson allowed seven runs — six earned — on eight hits in 4 2-3 innings. Utley put Philadelphia in front with a solo shot in the first, but Olt answered in the second. It was the 10th homer in 22 hits for the Cubs rookie. Ben Revere and Carlos Ruiz had RBI hits, along with Junior Lakes fielding error in centre field, in the bottom of the second helped Philadelphia take a 4-1 lead. SUNRISE, Fla. -- A controversial late goal tied the game, and the Winnipeg Jets made the most of it. Andrew Ladd and Kyle Wellwood each scored goals in a shootout and the Jets beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 on Monday night. Evander Kane scored two goals and Wellwood also scored in regulation for Winnipeg. Ondrej Pavelec stopped a season-high 39 of 42 shots from the Panthers. Tomas Fleischmann scored two goals in the third period for the Panthers and Jason Garrison also scored for Florida, while Jose Theodore made 28 saves. Each team scored a goal in the games final minutes of regulation. It was Kanes second goal that tied it 3-all at 19:10 that caused the disputed goal. There was a loose puck bouncing in front that Kane backhanded into the net in mid-air. One referee immediately waved it off but the others signalled goal. The goal was awarded to the Jets after a video review to determine if there was a high-stick. "There were three calls on the play," Kane said. "Disallowed, then they called it a goal on the ice, and then they went upstairs. Ive never really seen that before, but it was nice to see them make the right call." The Panthers didnt see it that way. "When you get it waved off that emphatically, the referee is standing there and he waves it off three or four times, youre under the assumption its going to be a no goal," Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said. "Its surprising, very surprising, that it would go from that to, all of a sudden, goal. When a guys waving it off that much, its a shame. I think some people will learn some lessons from that. I think there was a mistake made on the ice and unfortunately it cost us a point, a very expensive point." There were some nervous moments for Winnipeg as they waited for the review. "No, I wasnt confident, but I thought that it was good," Jets coach Claude Noel said. "I wasnt confident that it would hold up. The review is the review, they get a different angle and different people looking at it, so you just hope that things fall your way." Fleischmanns second goal came on a power play with 2:10 left and gave Florida a 3-2 lead. His shot from between the circles went over Pavelecs shoulder. "I wanted to go down low but they took it away so I went to the middle and it worked out," Fleischmann said. "I just shot it and it went in." Trailing 2-1 in the third, the Panthers tied the game on Fleischmanns first goal. Mike Weavers shot was deflected backwards off the skate of a Jets player. Fleischmann picked up the puck before the defender could find it and swept it past Pavelec on the stick side at 3:13. It was an important win for the Jets, in the midst of a seven game road trip. "A big character win. We didnt let that last goal put us down," Ladd said. "We came back and found a way to get another one and get a win." The Jets scored the games first goal at 3:44 of the first. Ladd took the puck from behind the net, then centred it to Wellwood low in the circle. His one-timer beat Theodore. The Jets stretched their lead to 2-0 on Kanes power-play goal later in the period. Kane grabbed a loose puck in the left circle and his ensuing wrist shot got past Theodore at 9:58. Florida closed to 2-1 with 20 seconds left in the first when Garrisons slapshot from just inside the blue line went past Pavelec, just under the crossbar. It was Garrisons third goal in three games and fifth of the season, matching his goal total in 73 games last season. Garrison leads all NHL defencemen in goals. The Tigers begin spring training workouts for pitchers and catchers in less than six weeks. "Im trying to keep everything as normal as possible," Verlander said. "Its easy to get pulled in a lot of different directions." Verlander will be hard pressed to top last seasons dazzling performance. After winning 24 games and leading Detroit to the AL Central title, the hard-throwing right-hander became the first starter since Roger Clemens in 1986 to take MVP honours. Along the way, he threw a no-hitter, led the league in strikeouts and routinely reached triple digits on the radar gun, becoming one of the games most recognizable faces and helping the Tigers reach the AL championship series. Of course, Verlander also threw a career-high 251 innings, and that doesnt even count pressure-filled starts in the playoffs against the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. At age 28, Verlander is in the prime of his career, but following up on last years heavy workload will be a test. He says his off-season regimen hasnt changed much -- although he had to wait a bit to start preparing for 2012 because his 2011 season lasted well into October. "Just kind of pushed it back a couple weeks," he said in a brief phone interview with The Associated Press. Verlander took pride in his preparation last season. After some disappointing Aprils, he showed up at spring training with a different approach, treating the preseason a bit more like the regular season. Verlander was solid for his first few starts, then his season really took off in May, when he threw his second career no-hitter at Toronto. Soon after that, Verlander established himself as the front-runner for the Cy Young Award and even reopened debate over whether pitchers can be MVPs. He ended up winning both awards. The hoopla from the regulaar season helped prepare Verlander for the off-season -- and the celebrity status that comes with all his honours.dddddddddddd He takes it mostly in stride, although there are times his place among baseballs stars really hits home. "When I was the cover of the video game, that was pretty cool," he admitted. Verlander is on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K12 and is helping promote a contest in which competitors can try to qualify for a possible US$1 million prize by throwing a perfect game on their Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 consoles. The competitors with the top eight perfect games qualify for a live tournament to crown the champion. Verlander was on OBriens show Wednesday night to talk about the contest. He also chatted a bit with the TBS host about his superstitious habit of eating from Taco Bell the night before his starts. Soon it will be time for Verlander to put his off-season obligations to the side and report to spring training. Its been a quiet off-season so far for the Tigers, whose biggest addition to this point has been reliever Octavio Dotel. Detroit also signed backup catcher Gerald Laird, whose job will be to catch an occasional game and allow starter Alex Avila to rest. Avila was one of the biggest reasons behind Detroits successful season last year, hitting .295 with 19 home runs. But he also started 130 games at catcher and took a beating behind the plate. "I think he got worn down by the end of the season," Verlander said. "He would never admit that." Aside from his own teams moves, Verlander has also kept an eye on the rest of the free agent shakeups around baseball. The Los Angeles Angels signed Albert Pujols, meaning the slugger will now be in Verlanders league. They also signed C.J. Wilson, who pitched for the Texas team that beat the Tigers in the ALCS. "The Pujols-C.J. Wilson signing was a big splash," Verlander said. "Obviously, Im excited to face Albert." Pujols is 5-for-10 lifetime against Verlander, including post-season at-bats. He homered off him in the 2006 World Series, when Pujols was playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. But Verlander was a rookie back then. cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '
