MONTREAL -- Stephane Waite, who helped shape goaltenders Corey Crawford and Antti Niemi for the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, was named goaltending coach of the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday. "He contributed to two Stanley Cup championships with the Blackhawks during his tenure working closely with two different goaltenders, namely Antti Niemi and Corey Crawford. He has vast experience and a thorough knowledge of our local market, and we are convinced that our goaltenders will benefit from his expertise and his work ethic." In Montreal, Waite will work with veterans Carey Price and Peter Budaj. The team also picked up Halifax Mooseheads goalie Zach Fucale in the draft on Sunday. This season, the brother of former NHL goaltender Jimmy Waite helped Crawford and Ray Emery win the Jennings Trophy awarded to the goalies with the best goals-against average in the NHL. In his career, Waite has served as goaltender respresentative for Sherbrooke Hockey and was goaltending consultant for IMG Hockey. The Sherbrooke, Que., native also coached goalies for several junior and midget AAA teams in the 1980s and 1990s and has run his own goaltending camp since 1988. Other NHL goalies he has worked with include Craig Anderson, Nikolai Khabibulin, Jocelyn Thibault, Brian Boucher, Felix Potvin, Jean-Sebastien Aubin, Michael Leighton, Patrick Lalime, Cristobal Huet and Marty Turco. There would be competition in training camp but the job would be his to lose. The situation is not so clear cut in the nations capital. Burris will have fellow veteran Glenn, who likely thought he had the inside track on the starters role before Tuesdays move, and De Marco, likely the quarterback of the future, to contend with. While the early nod may go to Burris, the other two candidates bring their own talents to the table and will be gunning for that top job. Many factors go into making the kind of decision Burris made on Tuesday and winning is usually at or near the top of the list for professional athletes. PITTSBURGH -- The injury-ravaged Pittsburgh Penguins keep winning. New Balance 574 Grey Blue . Sidney Crosby scored his 20th goal of the season Saturday, helping the Penguins win their season-high seventh straight game, 4-3 over the Calgary Flames. "Winning always makes things better," Crosby said. "Theres no secret there. It doesnt matter what team you play on, winning solves everything." The Penguins, who lead the Eastern Conference with 55 points, played without star centre Evgeni Malkin and five of their top six defencemen for the fourth straight game, but that didnt stop them from winning their 10th straight at home and picking up their 12th victory in 13 games. "We do our best to chip in and get through this," Crosby said. "Its not common, youre not used to being in this situation, but just having the mindset of going out there to outwork the other team has done us well." Crosby, who had a goal and two assists, extended his season-high points streak to 10 games. He leads the league with 54 points. Pascal Dupuis added his seventh goal of the season, Harry Zolnierczyk scored his first with the team and James Neal added a goal. Mike Cammalleri scored his first goal in nine games for the Flames. CLEVELAND -- The presumed favourite in the Browns coaching search says hes in the running. New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels confirmed he interviewed over the weekend with Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner. The team is searching for its second coach in a year and seventh since 1999 after firing Rob Chudzinski last week. "We met and thats about all there is at this point," McDaniels said Monday during a conference call. "Nothing further." The Browns began the second week of their search with no conclusion in sight. McDaniels wasnt offered the job because NFL rules prohibit teams from making offers to assistant coaches on playoff teams until they are out of the post-season. Even if the Browns want to hire McDaniels, they cant discuss a contract with him until New Englands season ends. The Patriots play Indianapolis on Saturday in a divisional playoff. McDaniels, who went 11-17 as Denvers coach before he was fired, did not divulge details of his meeting. "The opportunities are certainly flattering if they come up," said McDaniels, a native of Canton, Ohio. "That being said, I am going to try to keep my focus on the Colts and our preparation this week. Like Ive said in the past, Im fortunate to have the job I have, and I love being here. I love doing what Im doing. Each opportunity that comes along is a little different and Im going to leave it at that and continue to put my effort and attention into the Colts this week." McDaniels is one of three candidates known to have interviewed with Haslam and Banner. The Browns top brass also interviewed Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn and Arizona defensive co-ordinator Todd Bowles. The team also requested permission to interview Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase, but he declined the chance to meet with the Browns or Minnesota Vikings because he didnt want to be a distraction during the Broncos playoff preparations. McDaniels immediately emerged as the front-runner to wind up in Cleveland, based mostly on his association with Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who has worked with Browns general manager Michael Lombardi. Banner, too, has always thought highly of McDaniels, who may be better suited for a second go-around as a head coach after some tough lessons learned in Denver. The 37-year-old McDaniels clashed with quarterback Jay Cutler and wide receiver Bandon Marshall and made several questionable personnel moves as the teams de facto GM. Its still possible the Browns will hire a college coach. Bob Stoops, though, isnt the one. A person with direct knowledge of Clevelands search told The Associated Press that the Browns will not interview Oklahomas coach, who has deep Ohio roots. After his Sooners stunned Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last week, Stoops did nothing to dispel a report that said he had the "inside track" for the Browns job. But the person who spoke to the AP on Monday said the team is not pursuing him and that any reports saying so are "false." The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the search. Stoops said "you never know" when asked about the possibility of one day coaching in the NFL. His vague remarks fueled speculation about Clevelands coaching vacancy. Stoops is from Youngstown and has been linked to the Browns in the past. Cleveland is also reportedly interested in speaking with Auburns Gus Malzahn and Vanderbilts James Franklin. A night after reaching the top of the Eastern Conference, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be back on the ice trying to avoid handing that status to the streaking Montreal Canadiens. They have increased the skill and professionalism of their business leaders and staff, consistently and thoughtfully begun to strengthen their brands in their local markets, and have spent or committed $175 million in private money towards major stadium and infrastructure projects to create a modern CFL.
