FLORHAM PARK, N. ZaDarius Smith Super Bowl Jersey .J. -- Mike Goodson never doubted he would be back on the football field someday. Through all of the personal issues he dealt with for the last few months, the New York Jets running back knew hed someday resume his career. But first, he needed to take care of something more important: himself. "I took the time to get myself right," Goodson said Tuesday, "so I could come back and be the best football player I can be." Goodson returned to the team Monday after being away during training camp for personal reasons. In his first comments since his arrest in New Jersey on drugs and weapons charges in May, Goodson declined to go into details of the case or what he was doing while away from the team. "Personally? Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing," Goodson said. He was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season for violating the leagues substance abuse policy, and placed on the active non-football injury/illness list by the Jets. "Im pretty disappointed in myself," Goodson said. "I had some things that I had to do. Im back now and I was able to address those things and Im a lot better." When asked if he was seeking treatment for substance abuse during the time he was away from the team, Goodson preferred to keep that private. "Like I said, it was personal things (with) me and my family," he said. "I dont really want to get into those things here." Goodson was on the practice field Tuesday, mostly working with trainers, in his first appearance with the team since May. "I was able to get out and run around a little bit," he said, "get a workout in, get back into it." Despite the long absence, Goodson doesnt think hell be too far behind in picking up the offence because it is similar to that which Oakland ran while he was there last season. He spent his first three NFL seasons with Carolina after being a fourth-round pick out of Texas A&M, and will likely serve as a change-of-pace back for the Jets. He could also potentially fill the kick returner role once held by Joe McKnight, who was released Monday. "Spark," Goodson said when asked what he could provide the offence. "I think Im really explosive and given four weeks to prepare for something, I think Ill be pretty explosive and ready to play." The NFL said in a statement announcing the suspension that Goodson will be eligible to return to the Jets active roster on Sept. 30, a day after the teams game against the Tennessee Titans. The first game he would be eligible to play in would be against Atlanta on Oct. 7 -- a Monday night. He will be permitted to attend meetings and work out on his own at the teams practice facility during his suspension, but wont be able to practice or play. "Im really happy to get Mike back, theres no question about it," coach Rex Ryan said. "Hell get up to speed. When he left, he had a pretty good grasp of what we were doing. Obviously, the conditioning part, hell have to get into football shape without being able to practice, so that will be a challenge." Ryan wouldnt say that he was disappointed in the running back. "Everybody in here has made mistakes," he said. "I know Ive made plenty, and its well-documented. So, for me to pass judgment on somebody, Im just glad hes back with us." Goodson was arrested in May with friend Garant Evans after they were found in a car stopped on Interstate 80 in New Jersey. The men were charged with marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and weapons offences. Police said they found a .45-calibre semi-automatic handgun and a hollow-point bullet in the vehicle. The 26-year-old Goodson pleaded not guilty and took part in some preseason practices with the Jets, who signed him to a three-year, $6.9 million deal. The case was sent to a grand jury, but no court date has been scheduled. He said he had no plans to appeal his suspension by the NFL because it was "just something that I didnt want to do." Goodson wasnt sure if the Jets would release him at some point, but repeatedly said the team has been supportive of him through the entire process. "I just have my life in order," he said. "I was able to get my life in order and able to look at some things that I wasnt happy with with myself." Goodson wouldnt elaborate, but he acknowledged that he was a bit nervous about how he would be received by his Jets teammates when he returned. "But the guys have been great," he said. "It was all smiles and hugs when I got back, so its good." One of his biggest goals is to earn back the trust of his teammates, and he plans to do that by putting in a lot of work and not talking much. "I think the proof is in your actions," he said. He acknowledged that he has met with Ryan and general manager John Idzik about what is expected of him. While he wouldnt reveal what was said, Goodson isnt necessarily operating under an assumption that he needs to have not even the slightest misstep from here on out. "Nobodys perfect," he said. If the kid who played Malcolm in the Middle moved to England, spent the last 10 years in Manchester, bought an entire wardrobe collection of Nike shell suits and New York Yankee caps, with the peak bent upwards, this would be him. I didnt even bother explaining to him the purpose of my visit to Old Trafford. That had already happened a couple of minutes earlier when I chatted with one of his lieutenants, a man who I swore lived inside a caravan with Brad Pitt in the movie Snatch. My new mate Malcolm had bolted after seeing two gentlemen in Manchester United official blazers scope the area, but in reality they cared more about who was being let in to the posh car park they were minding. I found that out pretty quickly as I waited and wandered, albeit not too far from the area I was instructed to stand. And so there I was, stuck on a corner of a road staring at the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, four hours before kick-off, relying on Malcolm in the middle of a freaking super dodgy ticket ring. Before I had bumped into these two geezers I had already scoped half of the ground and found little activity. One guy was muttering any spare tickets? under his breath but when I asked him if he had any he told me he was strictly a fan looking for one himself. He cared little for my story but at least had the decency to shake my hand in my pursuit of getting a ticket for less than 200 quid. It was clear he had been lying about looking to sell tickets, by the way, because I later saw him doing some deal himself. I hadnt visited Old Trafford as a fan for 15 years and I will admit that this side of ticket touting, as it is called in England, surprised me. This was a more seedy underworld than I imagined, however. Weighing up the evidence on show - such as it being the first game of the season, under new manager David Moyes, against Chelsea, and the return of Jose Mourinho, - all certainly pointed towards it being quite possibly Malcs cup final. We were now in an alleyway at the back of houses, shielded by the clean laundry being hung out to dry in the locals back gardens. I asked once again about the legality of his work. "Its ridiculous, mate. If we are seen selling tickets, its a thousand pound fine. You are technically allowed to sell tickets but just not for a profit. Honestly, its stupid. People sell drugs up the road and yet we have to do it like this." I didnt feel much better but Waynes World was certainly friendlier than the Snatch gang… although a bit pricier. The next two hours up to kick off proved to be almost as interesting as the two hours following it. Watching a 75,000+ stadium wake up from nothing to full capacity is exhilarating. I cannot recommend it enough. The rest of the night was very enjoyable. Sure, the game was grim in parts, but hearing both sets of fans chant Rooney Rooney was entertaining as were the topics being discussed at half-time amongst the home supporters as they chomped on their Holland Pies and sipped their Singha beer. The man on the lips of the entire stadium probably was the games best player but it was equally enjoyable to watch Chelseas front four try to execute moves I had watched them do so closely in the warm-up. The game ended 0-0 but there were very few groans. I certainly left with a smile on my face. After all, I didnt have to go and meet Smokey and his mate Malc. For as great as Rask has been to this point in his career -- he has the best save percentage in the league since 2009-2010 -- but has had his problems with Montreal, including a .908 save percentage in 17 regular-season games against the Habs and has yet to beat the Canadiens in Boston, now 0-9 after Game One. Montreal got a pair of goals -- their first and last -- from D P.K. Subban, who played a game-high 33:49 in Game One and now has seven points in five playoff games this season. Likely the most pleasant surprise of this postseason for the Habs has been LW Rene Bourque, who scored three goals against Tampa Bay in the first round and came up with a goal and an assist against Boston. The Bruins controlled play so thoroughly that LW Daniel Paille had their worst possession numbers, and he was still on for 51.9% of 5-on-5 shot attempts. Defencemen Dougie Hamilton and Zdeno Chara as well as C Patrice Bergeron and RW Reilly Smith were all on for better than 70% of shot attempts. There was an interesting allocation at the bottom of the Habs puck possession chart for this game. LW Travis Moen (17.4%) was at the very bottom, but the next four, all under 26%, were the shortest Habs -- RW Brendan Gallagher, C David Desharnais, C Daniel Briere and D Mike Weaver. The only two Canadiens over 50% in shot attempts were Bourque and Lars Eller. Its just one game, so this could mean nothing at all, but it might be worth watching to see if the Canadiens smaller players continue to have possession problems as the series progresses. Credit to Eller, by the way, for coming up with positive possession stats while starting with one offensive zone face-off compared to 17 in the defensive zone (5.6%) in Game One. One of the subplots of the game, from Montreals perspective, is that head coach Michel Therrien demoted RW Thomas Vanek from the first line to the fourth line from a point early in the second period until midway through the third period. Vanek finished the game with 18:58 of ice time, which ranked ninth among Montreal forwards. Certainly getting a Game One win on the road is favourable under any circumstances, but getting it in a game in which they were so thoroughly dominated is especially good for the Canadiens, who had to lean so heavily on their goaltending to even have a chance. Now, can they close the possession gap and try to take Game Two in Boston without requiring Price to deliver another out-of-this-world performance? Pernices second shot found the back of the green well away from the hole. His putt was wide to the right and ran about five feet past the hole. Having not three-putted all week, Pernice drained it for birdie to force a playoff. Heading back to the 18th for the first playoff hole, both Pernice and Haas found the fairway with their drives. Haas put his approach shot just off the back of the green, while Pernice hit the green in two. They both two-putted for birdie to force a second playoff hole. Back on the 18th again, Pernice drove his ball well right into the waste area, where it sat down in a rut. Haas put his tee shot in the rough on the left. Pernice was forced to punch out into the fairway and his third shot was hit way to the right. Taking his second shot, Haas rolled his ball through the green and into a bunker behind the green. Pernice chipped onto the green with his fourth shot, while Haas shot out of the bunker found the green as well. Haas just missed his birdie putt for the win to the right and Pernice was able to scramble to make his par to force a third hole. Now on the par-3 17th, Pernices tee shot went off the back of the green and Haas hit his shot to within 20 feet. Pernice chipped his second shot to within four feet. Again, Haas missed his putt to the right and settled for par, and then he watched as Pernice rolled his in for a par as well. Back on the 18th one more time, both Pernice and Haas found the rough on the right. Like in regulation, Haas hit into the waste area in front of the green, while Pernice hit into a bunker to the left. Haas barely made it out of the waste area again and his ball held up in the rough. Pernices next shot got to within six feet and Haas chip out of the rough was still about 20 feet short. Haas drained his par putt to put the pressure on Pernice, but Pernice knocked his in for birdie and the victory was his. It was certainly back-and-forth and neither one of us played terrific golf, but somehow I managed to make some pars and a couple birdies in there, Haas said. Hats off to Tom, hes wonderful around the greens. I knew he was going to make a four there. I had it twice in front of the green there in those rocks and I feel like Im just going to zing it out of there and I chunked it both times. In regulation, Pernice made birdies on one and six on the front nine and made the turn at minus-2 for the day.
