CALGARY -- After seven years of learning the ropes in Phoenix, Brad Treliving says hes ready to return home and take the reins of an NHL team in a hockey-mad market. Nike Sf Air Force 1 Mid Nere . The Flames announced Monday that Treliving, a former assistant general manager with the Coyotes, will take over the vacant GM spot in Calgary. "Im ready for this,"Treliving said. "I know the challenges here we have ahead of us as a team ... I know the expectations of this market. I know the expectations of this fan base. And I want you to know Im prepared for this and Im ready for this challenge." Team president of hockey operations Brian Burke officially announced the hiring at an afternoon news conference. "Make no mistake about it folks, Brad is the general manager of this team, effective right now," Burke said, adding that Treliving was the only candidate the Flames interviewed. "Its important people understand that. It speaks volumes for what we think of Brad as a general manager," Burke said. Treliving, a native of Penticton, B.C., referred to himself a "proud Western Canadian" and said he welcomed the move. "In a lot of ways I look at this as a homecoming," the 44-year-old said. "Coming in yesterday, seeing the Rocky Mountains ... I appreciate Brian and (Flames president and CEO Ken Kings) hospitality. You got rid of the snow for a guy whos had his blood thinning in the desert the past few years." Treliving also had kind words for the Coyotes organization, where he worked closely with GM Don Maloney and was in charge of their AHL affiliate in Portland. Treliving worked for the Coyotes while they were on shaky ground and administered by the NHL before being bought by a Canadian-led group last year. "I know for a lot of people up here and outside of the Phoenix market over the past few years, theres been a lot of stories written (but) it was a great experience there because of the people there." Treliving will take over general manager duties from Burke, who served as interim GM after firing Jay Feaster in December. "He is the single most significant factor for me being here today," Treliving said of Burke. Treliving is also assistant GM for Team Canada at the IIHF world championship. He previously served as president of the Central Hockey League and president and director of hockey operations for the Western Professional Hockey League, which he founded. The Flames missed the playoffs for the fifth straight season after finishing with a 35-40-7 record for 77 points. Calgary was 13th in the Western Conference standings. As the Coyotes vice-president of hockey operations, Treliving worked closely with Maloney on personnel matters and helping build a team despite the financial limitations of being run by the NHL for four seasons. "Brad has learned at the knee of a general manager for whom I have great respect, Don Maloney. Hes been directly and actively involved in every facet of the general managers job," Burke said "He has a keen mind and a reputation as an extremely hard worker. Its my job to provide Brad with whatever guidance and leadership I can." The team made the playoffs in each of their four seasons without an owner before failing to reach the post-season the past two seasons. Trelivings duties also included managing the professional and amateur scouting staffs and making player personnel assignments to the teams minor-league affiliates. For Davis, it was one last historic performance before hes old enough to legally accept someones offer to buy him a drink for all hes done in less than two seasons of basketball in the Big Easy. Since the Pelicans were founded as the Charlotte Hornets in 1988, no one had racked up as many points, rebounds and blocks in the same game as Davis did against Denver. "Thats a testament to my team. Theyre giving me the ball where I can score and cutting hard so their man cant help, making big shots, playing defence, having my back if I try to go block a shot, boxing out and letting me get the rebounds," said Davis, who turns 21 on Tuesday. The Winnipeg Jets didnt get any good news on the injury front on Wednesday. Air Force 1 Alte Liberty . Evander Kane, who has missed four games with an lower body injury, will not be back for at least the next few games. Defenceman Zach Bogosian remains on injured reserve with a groin strain and is likely out for the next two weeks. Fellow blueliner Paul Postma has begun to do some light skating but remains out with a blood clot in his leg. He will be reassessed in a month. Forward Jim Slater, who underwent sports hernia surgery, is expected to be out longer than Postma. The Jets return to action on Thursday at home against the Colorado Avalanche. Salmons, whose acquisition was announced by the club Tuesday, has played 12 seasons in the NBA. He has averaged 9.4 points, 3 rebounds and 2.5 assists during his career. The underlying concern for Murray, while building a roster, and the Senators franchise in general is that there have been increasing questions about owner Eugene Melnyks finances. Questions started when Daniel Alfredsson departed last summer and in interviews following the season, Melnyk preached a prudent fiscal approach. If this summer sees Spezza go, and unrestricted free agents Ales Hemsky and Milan Michalek also head out the door, that would leave the Sens with three over-30 players -- D Chris Phillips, RW Chris Neil and G Craig Anderson. Otherwise, the roster would largely be comprised of players either in or approaching their peak years, which could make for a relatively quick rebuilding effort, though that may be dependent on whether the budget allows the Senators to keep other veteran talent. Following the 2014-2015 season, RW Bobby Ryan, D Marc Methot and goaltender Anderson are all heading towards unrestricted free agency. If the Senators arent contending next season, and those three are still approaching UFA status, will there be an inclination to sign them to long-term deals or will they be trade chips at next years trade deadline? These are the types of questions that hover over any team in the NHL as they make roster decisions, but the decisions have less room for error on teams that are operating on an internal budget and that appears to be the world in which the Senators are now operating. He turns 31 this summer and will be going into the final year of his current contract, but its just not easy to acquire a centre with Spezzas scoring pedigree. But, as a trade chip, hes valuable and if the Senators are trying to save money, getting out from under that $7-million while receiving young talent in return, then thats going to change the Senators window to win. One reason that the Senators can afford to shop Spezza is that Kyle Turris took a big step forward last season, doubling his previous career-best, scoring 58 points and he did it while generating positive possession numbers and playing hard minutes. Turris also had a career-best on-ice shooting percentage, which is likely to regress, but the 24-year-old has established that he can play in all situations and, with Spezza likely moving on, Turris will have to carry a heavy load. Playing a career-high 17:38 per game, Clarke MacArthur scored a career-high 24 goals and, as usual, delivered strong possession stats while skating on Turris wing. A three-time 20-goal scorer, MacArthur is consistently an above-average finisher (in terms of shooting percentage). Bobby Ryan was the Senators marquee acquisition last summer and while his production was okay, and he was part of a strong line with Turris and MacArthur, he did so while battling a sports hernia injury for much of the year. A four-time 30-goal scorer who just turned 27, Ryan is a rare talent and one that could be a cornerstone piece for the Sens going forward, but hes also heading into the final year of his contract, which leaves open the possibility that he could be moved out. At the very least, expect teams to inquire about Ryans availability until a decision is made on a new contract. Absurdly demoted to the AHL at the start of last season, as though he wasnt good enough to stay with the NHL team, Mika Zibanejad was quickly recalled and played well. Hes not yet entrusted with difficult minutes, but generates strong possession stats, so that could be the next step for a 21-year-old that plays both ends of the rink and offers a size/speed combination that is difficult to contain. A big-bodied forward whose production was inflated by playing with Jason Spezza a couple of years ago, Colin Greening hasnt scored so much since and has a contract extension kicking in next season that doesnt quite fit with a depth forward. If he can handle a regular spot in the top nine, that would be fine, but theres some risk that he wont be at that level for the next three years. Far and away the leader among active players in penalty minutes, Chris Neil saw his ice time drop by a couple minutes from the 2012-2013 season, yet hes still taking up too much ice time given his relative lack of production. Hes turning 35 this summer, so its not likely to get better either. A puck possession beast who cant finish a lick, Erik Condra is reliable and safe, but offers very little upside due to a lack of offensive production. While not charged with the toughest assignments, Condra still provides strong defensive work. Zack Smith is a gritty checking centre, who can chip in offensively, but he gets a lot of ice time for relatively minimal production. Smith takes some tough checking assignments, which undoubtedly increases his usage but if, for example, Zibanejad emerges in a bigger role, that might knock Smiths ice time down by a few minutes and that wouldnt be the worst scenario for this team. This summer could provide some serious change in Ottawa. If Spezza is traded, and Milan Michalek and Ales Hemsky leave via free agency, that would remove three of their top scoring options. There will be prospects battling for some of those openings and the return on a Spezza trade would have to include some young talent, but its safe to say that the Senators forward group is going to look significantly different next year. He is criticized for not being a lockdown defender, in addition to being a brilliant skater and puckhandler, but Karlsson keeps the puck in the opponents end so consistently, thats it is hard to get too worked up about what hes not doing. Patrick Wiercioch entered last season with expectations that he might take over some of the minutes that left town with veteran Sergei Gonchar, and Wiercioch did play more early in the year, putting up 10 points in his first 20 games, but couldnt hold a spot in the lineup through the middle portion of the season. He played relatively soft minutes, but was effective in those minutes, so its not unreasonable to think that the 23-year-old will be able to handle more responsibility next year. Marc Methot spent most of the year paired with Karlsson, providing a defensive anchor to Karlssons freewheeling ways. He finished with a career-high 23 points last season, including the first three power play points of his career, but Methot isnt going to make waves with his puck skills. Hes big, strong and has logged nearly 22 minutes a night in two seasons for the Senators, often against quality opposition. He is also entering the final year of his contract. A 23-year-old who already has a spotty history of injuries, Jared Cowen struggled in 2013-2014, but the Senators are operating with expectations that he can be better in the future, as he gets further removed from hip surgery. That may be the case, but it would be risky to go into next season expecting Cowen to handle a top-four role if it turns out that time itself doesnt make him better. After making his presence felt as a rookie in 2012-2013, Eric Grybas role was reduced last season. He dressed in 57 games and logged nearly three minutes less per game than the year before. He doesnt do anything special, particularly offensively, but he can do a reasonable job in a depth defensive role. The first overall pick in 1996, Chris Phillips is still grinding for the Senators, and while hes still utilized in a defensive role, hes obviously declined from the days in which he was charged with shutting down the oppositions best lines on a nightly basis. He has a reasonable enough contract for the next couple seasons. Pressed into action sooner than expected as a first-year pro, Cody Ceci started well, but went through some tough times as well; nothing unusual for a 20-year-old rookie defenceman. He was sheltered in his usage, but has good size and the 15th pick in the 2012 draft has offensive upside that he didnt have a chance to display as a rookie. This unit might be okay if Cowen is as good as the Senators expect, but that is the risk going forward. If Cowen isnt up to handling top-four minutes, then thats a hole that is a situation that will need to be addressed. Its possible help could come via a Spezza trade, but the Senators could also look for value on the free agent market. Andersons .941 save percentage crashed to .911 last season which isnt terrible, but is below average. Anderson also had to finish strong to get there. His struggles in October and November opened up the possibility that Robin Lehner could take over the starting job. 22-year-old Lehner had a .938 save percentage through the first couple months of the season, picking up where he left off the year before, and seemed like a capable replacement for a struggling Anderson, but Lehner couldnt handle it, posting an .891 save percentage in 21 games from December through March. The Senators can bring this tandem back next season, hoping that they bounce back, and that Lehner will be better positioned to take over from Anderson, who will be a free agent next summer. A sixth-round pick in 2010, Mark Stone has been knocking on the door for an NHL job and, after a productive showing in the AHL last season, he also picked up eight points and had strong possession stats, in 19 games with Ottawa. Hes ready for a full-time chance next season. There were seven 30-goal scorers in the AHL in 2013-2014 and only one was younger than Matt Puempel, the 24th pick in 2011, who has done decidedly more finishing than playmaking the past couple seasons. Jean-Gabriel Pageau had some late-season and playoff success with Ottawa in 2013, but managed two goals and no assists in 28 games last season, resulting in more AHL time. To his credit, Pageaus AHL scoring rate improved dramatically, which is promising, but hell be in a battle for a roster spot again next year. A mobile defenceman picked in the seventh round in 2011, Mikael Wikstrand may be a few years away, but hes already been productive in limited time in the Swedish Hockey League. A couple of years down the road, could be a gem. Could be. A late-bloomer who laid the AHL to waste last season, 24-year-old Mike Hoffman, played 25 games in Ottawa, contributing six points (3 G, 3 A) and didnt look out of place. Could be interesting if the speedster can carry some of that AHL production to the next level. Stephane Da Costa has been up and down from the AHL over the past couple seasons, but may have finally hit his stride last year, scoring better than a point-per-game in the AHL as well as putting up strong possession stats in a dozen games with Ottawa. Will it be enough to land a spot next season? Drafted in the seventh round in 2011, Ryan Dzingel had 84 points in 77 games over his last two seasons at Ohio State and made a smooth pro transition, scoring seven points in nine games with Binghamton at seasons end. A fifth-round pick in 2008, Mark Borowiecki is a tough, stay-at-home defenceman, and while hes made it into 21 NHL games over the past three seasons, hes effectively been passed by Gryba in that role. Drafted in the second round in 2011, Shane Prince has some skill, though hes in a depth chart battle with a bunch of other forward prospects in the organization. If Prince had a big productive season in 2013-2014, then he might be closer, but he is still just 21. Picked in the third round in 2012, Chris Driedger has been solid in two WHL seasons since, putting up a .916 save percentage in 104 games. Goaltenders are unpredictable and take time, so theres no urgency, but Driedger is worth keeping on the radar. Defenceman Fredrik Claesson plays a steady game and showed improvement in his second season in North America. He was a fifth-round pick in 2011. For the record, there are about seven weeks left in the regular season, so expecting Zetterberg for the first drop of the puck in the playoffs sounds a tad optimistic. No big deal. Zetterberg merely leads the Wings, with 48 points in 45 games and, at 20:33 per game, is one of two Red Wings forwards (Pavel Datsyuk, at 20:45 ATOI is the other) to play more than 18 minutes per game. Hes a puck possession star who plays tough minutes, so the Wings are going to be hard-pressed to replace Zetterbergs contributions. Certainly, if Datsyuk is healthy enough to play -- and he was healthy enough to put up six points in five games for Russia at the Olympics -- then that will help matters, but the Wings are still going to depend heavily on their young forwards that have been playing an increasing role as the season has progressed. That means the crew of Tomas Tatar, Gustav Nyquist, Riley Sheahan, Tomas Jurco, Darren Helm all have to raise their games if the Wings are going to survive Zetterbergs absence. The other option is that the Red Wings could use some of their organizational depth to acquire more immediate help. 2. The New York Islanders are, understandably, not thrilled about the prospects of spending the rest of the season without C John Tavares, who suffered a knee injury against Latvia but, provided he has a full recovery, there isnt much downside for the Isles. The Islanders, 12 points out of a playoff spot, werent going to contend for the postseason this year and are already preparing to move LW Thomas Vanek prior to the March 5th trade deadline. Under those circumtances, there will be some opportunities available for other Islanders, rookies Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson among them, to play more prominent offensive roles. Additionally, the loss of Tavares ought to ensure a higher draft pick for the Islanders. While the Islanders would prefer a healthy Tavares, if his absence results in picking a couple of spots higher in the summer, then thats not the worst thing in the world. If someone is potentially going to take a hit without Tavares, it could be RW Kyle Okposo, who has been having a career year playing primarily with Tavares and Vanek and will be rolling with new linemates over the final quarter of the season. 3. Rangers RW Mats Zuccarello, the teams leading scorer with 43 points in 58 games, suffered a broken hand while playing for Norway at the Olympics and is expected to miss the next couple weeks. While Zuccarello is out, that could offer more power play time for Blueshirts wingers, maybe even captain Ryan Callahan, who has been an afterthought in that respect, ranking eighth among Rangers forwards in power play ice time per game (1:47). Callahan has ranked first or second among Rangers forwards in power play time over each of the past three seasons. 4. Penguins D Paul Martin has endured a difficult campaign, missing 25 of 58 games already mostly due to a fractured tibia, and now he could miss another month with a hand injury. Since the Penguins are already going without Kris Letang, in the aftermath of his stroke, they are going to need to lean heavily on young defencemen. 19-year-old rookie Olli Maatta has been a revelation, scoring nine points (3 G, 6 A) in his past 11 NHL games and adding five points (3 G, 2 A) in six games for Team Finland at the Olympics. But the Penguins will need more than Maatta and Matt Niskanen. It could be an opportunity for Simon Despres, who hasnt been able to stick full-time with the Penguins, but has 22 points in 34 games with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. 5. Capitals RW Alex Ovechkin took plenty of heat for Team Russia coming up short on home ice, and with one goal and two points in five games, Ovechkin was due for criticism. At the same time, he had 24 shots on goal in five games (4.8 per), the kind of shot volume that would typically lead to more than one goal. It just so happened that, in this tournament, it didnt. Ive defended Ovechkins play in the NHL this season already, so theres no need to get too far into his Olympic performance. Could he have been better? Sure, but he was hardly alone in his performance and, considering the number of shots he generated, theres little reason to think he wont be able to continue scoring goals when Washingtons season resumes. Ovechkin wasnt the only Russian superstar to struggle. Penguins C Evgeni Malkin had a goal and two assists in five games, despite putting 20 shots on goal. Two goals on 44 combined shots (4.5%) from Malkin and Ovechkin is a difference-maker, in the wrong direction. In the NHL this season, Ovechkin has scored on 13.4% of his shots and Malkin on 12.6% of his shots, so if they managed to hold form on those 44 shots, that would have given them an expected 5.7 goals. But, sometimes in short series or tournaments, the pucks dont go in and the result was disastrous for home team Russia. 6. One of the stars for Team USA in Vancouver was Zach Parise, who had eight points in six games, including that late tying goal in the Gold Medal Game. It didnt quite work that way in Sochi, for Parise, however, as he was held to one goal and 11 shots in six games. Considering Parise has put up 3.91 shots per game for the Wild this season, his best rate since 2009-2010, and had nine points in seven games upon returning from injury prior to the Olympics, his lack of production was surprising. 7. If the Wild might be concerned about Parises Olympic showing, they have to be even more encouraged by the play of second-year C Mikael Granlund. Finland was shorthanded down the middle, with injuries to Mikko Koivu, Saku Koivu, Valtteri Filppula and, early in the tournament, Aleksander Barkov, thinning out the middle of the ice. No matter, as Granlund rose to the challenge, finishing with seven points (3 G, 4 A) in six games. The poing production is nice, and not completely out of line with his production in Minnesota, which includes three goals and 13 assists in the past 22 games, the last 15 of which have come while playing more minutes in the absence of Mikko Koivu. Whats more interesting about Granlund, however, is the 20 shots on goal he registered, the 3.33 shots per game a far cry from the modest 1.51 shots on goal per game hes averaged through his first 73 NHL contests. In the last handful of games before the break, Granlund had put up 20 shots on goal, so maybe there is some change coming to his game, and if hes generating chances more consistently, then its change for the better and Granlund may start living up to the hype that preceded his arrival in North America. 8. No player entered the Olympic break on the kind of roll that Maple Leafs RW Phil Kessel was, putting up 32 points (14 G, 18 A) in 21 games since Christmas and Kessel didnt miss a beat at the Olympics, leading the tournament with five goals and eight points, while playing a modest 15:20 per game for the Americans, which ranked sixth among U.S. forwards. Theres nothing to say that scoring in the Olympics will make Phil Kessel more legit in the NHL, but its encouraging to see that he was still a dangerous offensive threat against Olympic competition and the Leafs have to figure that Kessel and LW James van Riemsdyk (1 G, 6 A in 6 Olympic games) will be poised to lead them down the stretch as they battle for playoff position. 9. Blackhawks RW Patrick Kane took some heat for his lack of production (0 G, 4 A in 6 GP) for Team USA, but it only highlighted that Kane had been in a bit of a slump before going to the Olympics. In his past 18 NHL games, Kane has four goals and six assists and while Kane exploded in December, for 23 points and 55 shots on goal in 14 games, hes come back down a level from that peak production. 10. Islanders LW Thomas Vanek didnt do much for Team Austria, managing one assist and 10 shots on goal in four games, but the national team captain was also criticized in reports that noted Austrian players were drinking until 6 a.m. the night before their eliminationn game against Slovenia.dddddddddddd Its not going to affect Vaneks NHL trade value, because hes still one of the premier offensive players available as the trade deadline approaches, but its understandably disappointing for an Austrian team that had three NHL forwards on the roster. Islanders RW Michael Grabner (5 G, 1 A in 4 GP) and Flyers LW Michael Raffl (1 G, 2 A in 4 GP) were others. 11. Kings D Drew Doughty was spectacular for Team Canada, scoring four goals and six points in six games, prompting the question: is he reined in too much in Los Angeles? It may just be small sample stuff -- Doughty had a very productive 2012 NHL playoff too (4 G, 12 A in 20 GP) -- but its puzzling to see a player who had 59 points in 82 games as a 20-year-old continue to linger between 35 and 45 per season since. With 30 points in 59 NHL games, Doughty is on pace for 42 points this season, which would be his most since that 59-point season in 2009-2010. 12. The same question might be asked of Kings RW Jeff Carter, who had his selection questioned in some circles prior to the tournament, but Carter was clearly one of Canadas best forwards, using his speed to play strong defensively, backchecking and killing penalties, in addition to scoring three goals and five points in six games. Since the start of the 2008-2009 season, Carter ranks sixth with 182 goals but, as he showed for Team Canada, hes capable of more than merely scoring goals. 13. Penguins C Sidney Crosby was a story, particularly early in the tournament, as the narrative about him being so difficult to play with angle gained more legs. Crosby didnt produce much throughout the tournament, finishing with three points (1 G, 2 A) in six games, though his lone goal was both crucial and an impressive individual effort to give Canada a 2-0 lead in the Gold Medal Game. And, truth be told, Crosby created a bunch of chances in the semifinal against USA, even though he wasnt rewarded on the scoresheet. There has been research done on the subject that indicates playing with Crosby isnt such a daunting task, but when the Crosby line wasnt producing, the tendency was to pin blame on those with whom Crosby played which, in some respects, is letting Crosby off the hook. On one hand, there are legitimate arguments to make about player selection and coaching decisions about who gets to play with No. 87, but some of it has to fall on Crosby too. Its tough to be universally considered the best player in the world in a team sport -- and he is -- yet simultaneously difficult for anyone to play with. 14. Which brings us to one of the most criticized selections for Team Canada, Penguins LW Chris Kunitz, with the chrous perhaps reaching a crescendo during the 1-0 semifinal win over USA, when Kunitz had an altogether decent game, but missed several quality scoring chances that would have obviously helped provide insurance in such a close game. On Twitter, I wondered if Kunitz, an undeniably solid NHLer, whose next NHL goal will be No. 200, has his reputation raised because of the fact that he rides shotgun with Sidney Crosby. Team Canada brass made it clear that Kunitz was selected on the merits of his own play and that sounds reasonable enough for a player that has 107 points (49 G, 58 A) in 106 games since the start of last season. Of course, we could also compare that to someone like Oilers LW Taylor Hall, who has 106 points (36 G, 70 A) in 108 games over the same time period, and then consider that Hall is doing it with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as his centre, and not Crosby, and thats where the water gets murkier. Players are valued on more than points alone, obviously, but there is an inherent challenge in figuring out the impact of a players linemates on their production. Trying to identify an individuals contribution is the challenge of player evaluation and one that is ever-evolving and its hard to separate Kunitzs production from the fact that its coming alongside the best player in the world. The thing is, for all the criticism of his inclusion among Canadas best 13 forwards, Kunitz is the kind of wonderful story that is easy to get behind. He was undrafted out of Ferris State, hardly a hockey factory, and didnt stick in the NHL for keeps until he was 26-years-old after being waived by the Atlanta Thrashers. Hes a hard-working two-way winger who had won a couple of Stanley Cups, a Gold Medal at the Olympics and is having the most productive years of his NHL career as he approaches his mid-30s. After scoring his only goal of the tournament to seal the Gold Medal win, Kunitz wont have to listen to the criticism and he and Crosby can prepare for a stretch run and potentially a new winger before the trade deadline. 15. Canadiens G Carey Price was excellent (0.59 GAA, .972 SV% in 6 GP) behind Canadas spectacular defensive effort, and now returns to a Montreal team that has been decidedly unimpressive defensively. The Canadiens are allowing 30.6 shots against per game, which ranks 21st, and their puck possession numbers have been declining steadily since the start of the season, so if those trends dont reverse, a lot of Montreals playoff hopes (or even getting to the playoffs), will depend on their goaltender. Hes been great this year, posting career-high .925 save percentage in 48 games, but the Canadiens need every bit of that greatness. 16. 43-year-old Ducks RW Teemu Selanne, whose role has decreased in Anaheim -- he has 20 points (7 G, 13 A), with 13:57 ATOI in 47 games -- turned up the heat for a brief run and was named MVP of the tournament, scoring four goals and six points in six games for Finland on their way to a bronze medal. It wouldnt be reasonable to expect Selanne to rise up for a big finish to the season, just based on some short Olympic tourney success, but it does leave open the possibility that perhaps he could be a productive complementary player for the Ducks in the postseason. 17. The Czech Republic team was in disarray at times, but Oilers RW Ales Hemsky had a strong showing, with three goals and an assist in five games, despite averaging only 12:01 per game (some of that disarray was in how ice time was allocated). Combined with his lesser role in Edmonton, theres a decent argument to be made in favour of Hemsky as a trade deadline acquisition who has some upside if plugged into a role alongside skilled players and allowed to play significant minutes. As noted in the Kunitz portion, it matters who you play with. 18. Sweden reached the final with an injury-depleted roster, but there were some odd decisions in their blueline deployment. Coyotes D Oliver Ekman-Larsson was glued to the bench for five of the final six periods of the tournament and averaged 9:43 per game, while Blackhawks D Niklas Hjalmarsson played 18:20 per game. This was also a team that left Lightning D Victor Hedman at home, so there is a definite disconnect between the Swedish team and the esteem with which some its players are held in the NHL. 19. Speaking of Swedish defencemen who are held in high regard, Senators D Erik Karlsson was a dynamo on the big ice, as might be expected with such an exceptional skater. Karlsson had four goals and eight points, tying Phil Kessel for the tournament lead in points. 20. Switzerland played an extremely buttoned-down game, scoring a total of three goals in four games, but NHL goaltenders Jonas Hiller (Ducks) & Reto Berra (Flames) turned in strong performances, combining to stop 96 of 99 shots faced. Certainly, there is some credit due to the Swiss defence, led by NHLers Mark Streit, Raphael Diaz and Roman Josi, for allowing just 99 shots in four games. 21. Blue Jackets D Fedor Tyutin is out for 2-3 weeks after suffering an ankle injury. He ranks third on the Columbus defence in time on ice (21:34 per game), so someone will have to take on more minutes, potentially Nikita Nikitin, whose ice time has decreased quite a bit to 17:12 per game thsi season after playing 24:35 per game for the Blue Jackets in 2011-2012. 22. Panthers C Aleksander Barkov suffered a knee injury at the Olympics and is out indefinitely. The Panthers were shallow enough down the middle this season that 18-year-old Barkov has been their No.1 centre. If the Panthers trade veteran centre Marcel Goc, that could really change the minutes available for the likes of Nick Bjugstad, Drew Shore and Shawn Matthias. The numbers are there, but this is about timing and impact...and rings. Watson: Indeed. LeBron James is always in the discussion when it comes to deadliest players in the league and DWades 2013-14 NBA season, aka "The Rest & Recuperation Tour," did wonders for him. Only playing in 54 of the Heats 82 games, this campaign was all about prepping him for the playoffs. In the Eastern Conference Finals, hes averaging 25 points a game and shooting 64.7 per cent from the field. What does this mean for the Pacers? Even if Paul Georges concussion, knocked him into a Freaky Friday/Thunderstruck-like exchange with a playoff-primed Reggie Miller, it wouldnt be enough. What, if anything, can Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder do to make this Western Conference Finals a series? Strickland: Ummm... Compete? Pray? Ask his Mom, aka "The Real MVP," to suit up and fill the lanes with him? Really, the best Durant can do now, even with the "revelation" that PF Serge Ibaka is now miraculously listed as day-to-day, is to show and prove his MVP status by putting greater pressure on the Spurs by attacking the basket relentlessly. Hell craft more scoring and free throw opportunities for himself. Additionally, KD can create open shots for youngsters Perry Jones III and Jeremy Lamb, as well as the not-so-young Caron Butler and Derek Fisher. Despite his greatness, the jury is still out on Kevin Wayne Durant, fairly or unfairly so. Andrade: More like, what, if anything, will the Spurs forget to do to ALLOW the Thunder back into the series? Without Serge Ibaka, there is less defence against a San Antonio team that can score with the best of them. The Spurs have averaged 117 points per game vs OKC in two games and held them to just 77 in the second. Tim Duncan is averaging 20, Kawhi Leonard keeps emerging and Gregg Popovich has still managed to keep everyones minutes down in a Western Conference Final. The Durant/Westbrook tandem scored a 30 combined points on 13-40 shooting from the field in Game 2. What can the Thunder do? Durants gotta bring out the cape! KDs gotta go 2K, other-worldly. Thats it. Old samurai teaching: "Common sense will not accomplish great things. Simply become insane and desperate." Watson: Focus on cracking the top 50 in NBA Career playoff points, as he currently sits at #53 with 1997 points, Jason Kidd is #50 with 2043. Even if Durant plays twice as good as his MVP campaign, it wont be enough. KD and Westbrook need the support of their teammates. The Spurs have made it abundantly clear that, even IF Serge Ibaka walks through that door, it wont be enough. What will Cleveland do with the #1 pick in the NBA Draft for the second year in a row and third time in four years? Strickland: Draft Andrew Wiggins to create Team Canada South along with fellow Canucks Tristan Thompson & Anthony Bennett... and that may be the wrong move for long term success for a franchise not synonymous with long term success. What they SHOULD do? Despite the red flags of back issues for a 19-year-old 7-footer who may still be growing, draft #TheColonelsSon and Wigginss former teammate at Kansas, C Joel Embiid. The Cavs cant mess this up, too...can they? Andrade: The Cavaliers will draft Andrew Wiggins. How could they not? They certainly cant get cute like they did with Anthony Bennett last year - a good gamble, but not for a first-overall pick. Wiggins, paired with a healthy Kyrie Irving, could make things go electric in a hurry quickly in Ohio and the Cavs have the front court assets to move should they wish to compliment that tag-team further. Theres also Dion Waiters as an on-the-trading-block guy that could help return a much needed veteran. Joel Embiid is tempting, but the upside to Wiggins is just so much higheer.dddddddddddd Hes the closest thing to replacing LeBron James via draft this franchise has had since The Kings departure. Whatcha think all the picks is for?!? Wig-GINS by the door... no beef no more! Watson: The Cavaliers have the most injury-prone All-Star in the league with Kyrie Irving, who missed fewer than 20 games for the first time in his three-career this season, (he missed 10). They cant afford to have Joel Embiid out, as well, with potential back issues. They will take Andrew Wiggins, who will slide right in at the three-spot as a proven commodity. If youre Masai Ujiri, who do the Toronto Raptors select with the 20th pick of the 2014 NBA Draft? Strickland: Front office wizard Ujiri will find a quality young replacement for the potential loss of free agent point guards Kyle Lowry and/or Greivis Vasquez. With the out-of-the-blue success of the long, rangy, athletic 2014 Rookie Of The Year Michael Carter-Williams, Id look at UCLAs Kyle Anderson, the 68" point guard with a solid all-around skill set that can be enhanced with a professional setting, improved conditioning/strength training, diet and skill-enhancement repetition. Andrade: With Tyler Enniss stock wildly fluctuating from lottery pick to late first-rounder, the Raptors could realistically see him on the board with the 20th pick and would have a cheap star-potential steal and insurance at the PG for what looks to be an expensive Kyle Lowry situation. Do they have to keep the pick? Sure, the ill-fated Roy Hibbert for Nathan Jawai (and others) draft night swap with Indiana in 2008 haunted the Raps until Jonas Valanciunas showed up, but this time moving the pick, before or after its made, makes more sense. The Raptors had eight players with three or fewer years NBA experience last season, including keepers Terrence Ross, Patrick Patterson, Greivis Vasquez and Valanciunas. Do they really need to get younger? The Raptors are in a delicate place. Riding the Drake-era wave is essential for an organization with just one playoff series victory in its 20-year history. Packaging the pick with grease like Tyler Hansbrough, Landry Fields and/or Chuck Hayes might fetch a more dynamic piece that helps take better advantage of their window. Watson: I do what I do best: fleece the other GMs in the league with it for a good trade. Jonas Valanciunas and Terrence Ross are big parts of this ball club, but will only be entering their third seasons. The Raptors need a veteran who can contribute right away. They were one shot away from the second round of the playoffs. This team does not necessarily need to get younger. I only make the pick if Tyler Ennis or Nik Stauskas are still available, of course. Steve Kerr has been the coveted new coach this off-season. Will he continue a current trend of new blood in the NBA coaching ranks, or will we see a number of recycled coaches get jobs this summer? Strickland: Depends on situation and circumstance. Analytics rule the day for many teams and analysts like Kerr have gotten their coaching stripes without coaching experience (see: Jackson, Mark - Golden State). Young teams will need a veteran coach with a younger staff to relate to the ever changing National Basketball Association and its players while implementing structure, accountability and professionalism, as well as having the foresight to know when to let your horses be horses. Lionel Hollins, Nate McMillan, George Karl, Sam Mitchell and the aforementioned Jackson immediately come to mind. Older teams in soon-to-be rebuilding modes may need younger, less experienced coaches willing to take lumps while losing and learning on the job. Does that mean that Floridas Billy Donovan or UConns Kevin Ollie are going to leave cushy college gigs for the bright lights and finely finished hardwood courts of the NBA? Stay tuned! Andrade: Its always a mix. Weve already seen recycled with good old Stan Van Gundy coming back with the Pistons to balance the Steve Kerr rookie hire in Oakland. Last season it was Jason Kidd, Steve Clifford and Jeff Hornecek among others getting first-time kicks at the can with Kidd and Clifford making the playoffs and all of them earning league-wide props. Trending? Perhaps, but everyone from the still-active-and-fighting-for-his-playoff-life OKC vet Derek Fisher to the tried and true Lionel Hollins and George Karl are being mentioned for gigs. Landscape is a factor. Much easier to sell a post-Kevin Love era rookie bench boss in Minnesota for the possible reboot. Ditto for the Cavaliers. Head coaching hires are as much about stop-gapping and finances as they are about optics and competing. If Mark Jackson has taught us anything at all, its that the line between his first-stint firing from a 51-win playoff Warriors team and Karls coach of the year winning fifth-stint firing from a 57-win Nuggets postseason squad a year ago, is severely blurred. Watson: Enough already with retreads. Mike Dunleavy and George Karl havent won anything. If youre a successful coach like the Van Gundy brothers fine, but dont hire by name alone. Newbies like Dave Joerger (Memphis), Mike Budenholzer (Atlanta) and Jeff Hornacek (Phoenix) all had great seasons in the big chair. KANSAS CITY - Sporting Kansas City returns to action for the first time in two weeks as the club gets set to take on the Montreal Impact at Sporting Park on Saturday. Sportings last outing was a 0-0 draw with Real Salt Lake two weeks ago in a rematch of last seasons MLS Cup final, while Montreal is still searching for its first win of the 2014 campaign after playing to its third successive draw last weekend, a 1-1 stalemate with Chicago. Montreal lost its first three games to begin the season, but has rebounded to take three points from its last three matches. And although the team sits on the bottom of the Eastern Conference and has yet to record a win this season, goalkeeper Troy Perkins is encouraged by the last three results. "Everybody seems to see the negative, but the reality is weve gotten points in our last three games," Perkins said. "Were unbeaten, its still early in the season and were getting points, so we keep moving forward." In the Impacts last game, the club got a goal from Jack McInerney in the 43rd minute to take the lead on the Fire with McInerney scoring in his debut following a trade that sent Andrew Wenger to the Philadelphia Union in exchange for the 21-year-old. First Period: The game began with some negative energy and carryover from their previous meeting on December 16 resulting from a high hit by Zach Smith on Alex Steen. Steen subsequently missed some games with concussion like symptoms. The first clue of what the refs might have in store came when Ken Hitchcock not only started his fourth line but intended for Ryan Reeves to line up out of his normal position to take the opening draw against Zack Smith. Referee Marc Joannette wisely ejected Reeves prior to the puck drop following some trash talk. That first shift lasted 36 seconds before unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were assessed to both Reeves and Smith. Given the negative energy I referred to, the referees should have been on high alert to bring the temperature down if and when they deemed it necessary. It was apparent to me that St. Louis Blues were the more aggressive team from the onset. With 13:42 remaining in thee first period David Backes took exception to a solid, but legal hit by Chris Neil in the Senators end zone.dddddddddddd When play stopped in the Blues zone (13:29 remaining) David Backes initiate a scrum by first grabbing Clarke MacArthur after the whistle and then dropped his gloves and grabbed Kyle Turris. This was a perfect opportunity for the referees to set a good standard on scrums by assessing a single penalty to Blues captain David Backes. This was a key moment in the game when a stand-alone penalty to the Blues should have resulted to address the scrum issue but was not called. With 4:34 remaining, Kevin Shattenkirk got away with a high hit and charge against Milan Michalek on a play that was signaled for an offside at the Blues blue line. Shattenkirk travelled a distance, left his feet and made some contact with the head of Michalek. A charging minor was warranted but not called. With 2:06 remaining in the first, Clarke MacArthur was correctly penalized for tripping when he kicked T.J. Oshies skates out from behind to take down the Blue player. Even though Sens coach Paul McLean and MacArthur protested, the referee made the right call! Another correct penalty call by the referee was then assessed to Derek Roy of the Blues with 29 seconds remaining when he grabbed and stretched the jersey of Marc Methot from behind. Second Period: This period was when missed and incorrect penalty calls resulted in frustration for the Senator players, their coach and their fans. With 17:01 remaining, Kyle Turris cleanly won a Senators end zone faceoff against Alex Steen. Steen then hooked his stick through the left leg of Turris, lifting the leg almost waist high and depositing the Senators player hard to the ice. Steen gave Turris an additional shot once he was down just for good measure! Although nothing was called this was clearly an aggressive trip that should have resulted in a penalty to Steen and resulted in another major scrum taking place. When play stopped 13 seconds later, Turris had words with Steen, punches were exchanged in the scrum. Chris Stewart and Bobby Ryan were assessed coincidental roughing minor penalties. The main event was between Turris and Steen and following the failed tripping call, these two players should have been sent to the penalty box to cool off. There was a good non-call by referee Joannette during the resulting four on four when Alex Steen grabbed a stretch pass at the Ottawa blue line and went in all alone. Eric Gryba made an excellent, legal defensive stick lift with the referee looking on. Scrums persisted in rapid-fire that were not addressed by the referees. With 12:02 remaining, Kyle Turris of the Sens pushed the back of Roman Polaks head with force following a stoppage of play in the Blues goal crease. Turris should have received a penalty as the initiator of the scrum that followed. No call was made. Eric Condra jammed his stick at a puck that was frozen by Jaroslav Halak, resulting in a major scrum where no penalties resulted with 11:42 remaining in the period. Shortly thereafter (10:24 left) a four player scrum following the stoppage took place that included a couple of heavyweights in Chris Neil and Ryan Reeves. Once again, no penalties were assessed by either referee.A pattern clearly had developed by this point with the number of non-penalized scrums that had taken place within a relatively short span of time on the game clock. What can I say about the Bobby Ryan elbowing penalty? In an attempt to put it nicely. Ill state that Bobby Ryan did not deserve an elbowing penalty on the play when Alexander Steen ran into Ryans elbow. Penalty calls are rated in three categories: i) Good ii) Marginal and iii) Poor. This call clearly falls into category iii). The Senators lost their composure (justified or not) and verbally shared their disdain for the referees call and most likely got personal. The referees standard on scrums was somehow was altered at this point in the game when just 5 seconds into the Bobby Ryan elbowing penalty, Patrik Berglund went to the net and lightly bumped Sens goalie Robin Lehner. Milan Michalek was then assessed a roughing penalty, putting the Sens two men short when he grabbed Berglund around the neck from behind to pull the Blues player back from his goalkeeper. No punch or push to the head as witnessed previously but a grab around the neck. The penalty call was an overreaction and completely inconsistent with the standard set to on the multiple scrums that had occurred to this point in the game. Much more aggressive incidents had been committed by players of both teams had not resulted in penalties to this point in the game; especially to place a team at a two man disadvantage. Perhaps there is also a lesson to be learned by the Sens as well regarding their lack of anger and frustration management? The penalty assessed to Marc Methot with approximately four seconds remaining in the roughing minor to Michalek was justified, once Methot extended his arms and delivered a solid cross-check in the corner to T.J. Oshie. The tripping penalty assessed to Mika Zibanejad on Jay Bouwmeester with 2:59 remaining in the second period was also a must call for the referee to make. The negative energy that was first initiated by the Blues against the Senators at the start of the game was now clearly being transferred by the Sens toward the refs! Clarke MacArthurs 10 minutes misconduct at the 20:00 minute mark clearly demonstrates the Sens frustration. Third Period: I hope no one would argue with the errant high-stick by Eric Gryba that clipped Brenden Morrow or the free two-handed slash to Morrows leg before the whistle blew to assess the high-sticking penalty. What I would point out here is that rather aggressive scrums continued with a couple in the final minute of regulation time. The score was tied and I would expect, as was the case, no penalties resulted. I would have hoped the scrums had been dealt with by the referees in an assertive and appropriate manner in the early going of the game and not through a stand-alone penalty to Milan Michalek that placed his team in a two-man disadvantage. OT Period: Regardless of what the player or his coach thought the hooking penalty to Clarke MacArthur when he reached and placed his stick across the arms and body of T.J. Oshie to restrain the Blues forward on a path to the net was absolutely the correct call! The bottom line is that the Senators persevered and picked up two points in a shootout win. Whether an Officials Performance Review is requested by Bryan Murray, we will most likely never know. Perhaps more important than this, as the Senators move forward, is for coach Paul McLean and his players to review their response to the officiating they received in this game.
