PORTLAND, Ore. -- Former Portland Timbers forward Eddie Johnson is suing the Major League Soccer team for $9.9 million, alleging that he was allowed to practice while he still had concussion symptoms. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court. It names the Timbers ownership group, Peregrine Sports LLC, and members of the teams medical staff. Johnson sustained a concussion before a game Aug. 3, 2011, and another one 11 days later, prompting the team to rule him out for the rest of the season. The lawsuit alleges that when he returned for the MLS preseason in 2012, he was still experiencing symptoms. The native of Chester, England, retired that April after another head injury. The lawsuit claims that the Johnson suffered "serious and permanent traumatic head and brain injuries" that caused headaches, memory impairment, impaired balance, blurred vision, dizziness and other conditions. "Johnson has and will continue to suffer loss of function and ability, pain, discomfort, mental suffering, anxiety, and inconvenience and interference with his normal and usual activities," the lawsuit said. The Timbers said in a statement released Thursday that they would not comment specifically on the lawsuit, but said the team follows all MLS health-related protocols for players. "Additionally, we approach head injuries with extra caution and err on the side of conservatism above and beyond official protocol when dealing with them," the team said. "We have an expert staff of physicians and trainers and stand by them and their evaluations," the teams statement said. Johnson played professionally in England and the United State for more than 10 years. His career started with Manchester United and he appeared with the first team during the 2003-04 season. He played for several English clubs before moving to the United States in 2009. He was one of the first four players signed by the Timbers for their inaugural MLS season in 2011. He appeared in seven league matches and had a goal during his time in Portland. cheap jerseys . "Scott has an upper-body injury, probably going to keep him out for at least a week," Holmgren said. Wayne Simmonds scored two goals and the Flyers beat the Dallas Stars 4-2 Thursday night for their fourth straight win. Mark Streit and Michael Raffl also scored for Philadelphia, which improved to 11-2-1 in its last 14 games while maintaining its hold on second place in the Metropolitan Division. Despite the victory, head coach Craig Berube was concerned with the teams "sloppy" play, particularly the second period when Philadelphia allowed 17 shots and three power plays. "Tonight wasnt as good, for sure," Berube said. "We were sloppy tonight, at times. Overall our team is competing hard, working hard and playing like a team, and thats what you have to do. They know it wasnt good enough tonight, but we won." Jamie Benn scored twice for Dallas, which lost its fourth straight. The Stars began the day two points behind Phoenix for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Stars coach Lindy Ruff actually saw positives in the defeat. "If we play like that night after night, well win," Ruff said. "We didnt give up a lot in the game. We gave up four goals but we didnt give up four goals on a lot of opportunities and zone time. Our puck movement was good. The margin of victory, that game couldve went either way real fast." Simmonds scored his second of the game with 7:39 left to put Philadelphia ahead 3-1. After skating across the blue line, Simmonds fired a wrist shot that beat Tim Thomas to the stick side. "Thats a save I should make," Thomas said. "The team really needed it at the time, and I really feel bad for the guys for the game they played. Thats hockey. But I can guarantee Im going to be better for the guys from here on out." Just 30 seconds later, Benn scored his second of the contest by finishing a rebound from in front of the crease after Tyler Seguins shot followed a poor Philadelphia turnover in its own end. It was the 29th goal of the season for Benn, who has points in eight of his last nine games. Raffl provided soome insurance for Philadelphia by beating Thomas with a backhander on a breakaway with 3:12 to play.dddddddddddd The Flyers took a 2-0 lead after one period. Streit opened the scoring with 9:37 left in the first when he beat Thomas to the glove side with a one-timed slap shot from the top of the left circle. Thomas, Dallas backup, got the start because he entered 14-4-2 with a 2.21 goals-against average and .934 save percentage in his career against Philadelphia. The Stars starting goalie, Kari Lehtonen, is 0-10-2 with a 3.50 goals-against and .891 save percentage lifetime against the Flyers. Simmonds scored on a rebound on the power play just under three minutes later to put Philadelphia in front 2-0. Jakub Voraceks shot from the blue line first hit the right post, then the back of Thomas leg and then the left post before deflecting in front to a wide-open Simmonds, who easily finished from lose range. After Steve Mason stopped Alex Chiasson and Benn on a 5-on-3 power play with 8 minutes remaining in the second period, Benn got the Stars on the board with 7:12 left in the period on a 5-on-4 advantage by beating Mason through the five-hole from right in front of the goal to pull Dallas within 2-1. It was the first power-play goal allowed by the Flyers in their last 20 penalty kills. And despite dominating the period, Dallas entered the third down one goal. "We got on our toes and skated well," Ruff said of the second period. "You have to give Mason a lot of credit. We couldve built some momentum and he made a couple timely saves." Tyler Seguin finished with two assists, giving him 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in his last eight games while extending his career-high total to 72 points. NOTES: Dallas lost for the fourth straight time in Philadelphia, with the Stars last victory a 4-1 win on Dec. 1, 2007. ... CHICAGO - The Chicago Blackhawks are trying get into a groove so they can head into the playoffs firing on all cylinders. Even without star forward Patrick Kane, the defending Stanley Cup champions showed signs of moving in the right direction Tuesday night. Andrew Shaw and Duncan Keith each had a goal and an assist, and Chicago held on for a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars. "We did some good things throughout the game," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "All four lines were contributing and our special teams were good as well. Good win." Kris Versteeg and Marian Hossa also scored for Chicago, which needs just one more point to clinch a playoff berth for the sixth straight season. Patrick Sharp added two assists to help Chicago finish 4-1 against Dallas in the Central Division rivals regular-season series. "It was a big win tonight," said Keith, second in scoring among defencemen with 57 points. "Theyre a hungry team, fighting for their playoff lives." Ryan Garbutt scored twice for the Stars, who fell three points behind Phoenix for the final Western Conference playoff berth. Dallas matched Chicagos speed and effort early, but eventually the Blackhawks took over and built a 3-1 lead. Garbutts second goal cut it to 3-2 late in the third, but Hossa empty-netter sealed the Blackhawks solid effort. Chicagos Corey Crawford made 25 saves, while Dallas Kari Lehtonen blocked 38 shots. "Theyre a fast team, can really skate," Crawford said. "They got the jump early and then our D were able to shut them down really good. "They really shut down everything in the third period." Dallas Tyler Seguin set up Garbutts goal in the second period to extend his point streak to 10 games. He has seven goals and 10 assists during the run. Blackhawks top prospect Teuvo Teravainen didnt record a point in his NHL debut, but logged 11 minutes and 39 seconds of ice time. The 19-year-old forward was Chicagos first-round draft pick in 2012 and led his team in Finland, Jokerit, in scoring this season. Chicago played its third game without Kane, who is on long-term injured reserve and may miss the rest of the regular season. Dallas had several good chances early, including Garbutts breakaway just over 2 minutes in. Crawford stopped his close-in rising shot with a glove save. "We hung around the first 10 minutes and Garbutt had the breakaway," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "But I thought they slowly started taking it away from us. "We slowed the game down and they sped it up all the time." Chicago took charge as the period progressed, then Shaws power-play goal with 18 seconds left in the first opened the scoring. Shaw swept in a rebound of Sharps shot from the blue line with a highlight-reel effort. Shaw was knocked to the ice by Dallas defenceman Trevor Daley in the crease, but backhanded in the loose puck as he fell to his knees and while facing away from the net. Versteeg was credited with a goal at 4:12 of the second that made it 2-0. After Dallas Antoine Roussel failed to clear the puck, Versteeg slid a pass toward Hossa who was cruising in down the slot. Rousell reached with his stick to break up the pass, but deflected the pucks past Lehtonen. Garbutt didnt miss on his second breakaway of the game, and cut it to 2-1 midway through the second. He skated in behind the Blackhawks defence after Seguin banked a pass off the left boards from the Stars zone. Garbutt cut across the crease and slipped a backhander between Crawfords pads. Keith restored Chicagos two-goal lead at 3-1 with 5:45 left in the period on a fluttering screened shot from the left point. Garbutts second goal cut it to 3-2 with 5:40 left in the third. Following Nick Leddys turnover in the right corner of the Chicago zone, Garbutt carried the puck to the net. Crawford stopped his first shot, but Garbutt stuffed in the rebound from right side of the goal. "Its too bad we couldnt get the third (goal) there," Garbutt said. "Its doesnt matter if its pretty or not this time of year. "Well just take what we can get and need to start scoring more as a team." Hossa fired into an empty net with 33.3 seconds left to complete the scoring. Notes: Keith has six goals and 51 assists for his 57 points. ... The Blackhawks won 49 of 71 faceoffs on Tuesday. MIAMI -- During a pregame talk, Colorado manager Walt Weiss compared Marlins rookie Jose Fernandez to Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood. Fernandez then showed why hes deserving of the praise. Fernandez struck out eight in seven innings, leading the Miami Marlins to a 3-0 win over the Rockies on Saturday night. "I just tried to go out there and get outs, get back in the dugout and let my team try to get some runs, and thats what we did," Fernandez said. "It feels pretty good to win." Fernandez (10-5) allowed four hits and did not walk a batter as he lowered his ERA to 2.30. The 21-year-old All-Star has been one of the best pitchers in the Majors since June 1, compiling a 1.52 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 15 starts. "I dont know if Ive seen another 21-year old as good as him, as polished as him at that age," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "He threw some nasty curveballs today and changeups as well. He just continues to have an answer for them if they take a good swing. ... He is impressive with the way he commands all of his pitches." A.J. Ramos pitched the eighth and Steve Cishek earned his 28th save in 30 chances. Todd Helton had two hits for the Rockies to move into 96th place on the career hits list with 2,496 in 17 seasons, all with Colorado. The Marlins scored three runs in the fourth off Jeff Manship (0-4), who allowed three runs in six innings. "I just need to stop the bleeding and have a little bit of luck go my way -- dont let the hits compound," Manship said. Fernandez showed off his youthful exuberance on several plays. First, when he snagged Troy Tulowitzkis line drive to end the first inning, Fernandez glared at the Rockies All-Star shortstop, who asked Fernandez how he caught it. Fernandez flashed a big smile on his way back to the Marlins dugout. "I saw it coming off the bat and I just threw my glove to it," Fernandez said. "Im not going to say I caught it, it caught me. Then (Troy) said, You just did that. And I was like, Yes I did. It was kind of funny, but we talk and were good friends so its all good." Then in the fifth, Fernandez tried to bunt for a base hit, but third baseman Nolan Arenado barehanded the ball and threw him out at first base. Fernandez thought he was safe and jumped up in a sign of frustration, yelled, and then gave another big smile. "I love it, I love the energy," Redmond ssaid.dddddddddddd. "For us that are around him every day and get to see him compete, its infectious. We all love to watch it and build off of it. But at the same time, too, hes a young kid and we make sure we temper that on the field." Fernandez grinned broadly after Helton singled in the seventh to move ahead of Mickey Vernon on the hits list. The ball was thrown into the Rockies dugout as a keepsake and Fernandez tipped his cap to Helton although he was unaware of the milestone. "Hes an incredible hitter and I have to do it," Fernandez said. "Hes 3 for 6 against me. I tried to make good pitches. Hes an incredible hitter so I have to tip my cap to guys like that who can hit so well and can do a lot of incredible stuff with the bat." When Fernandez was made aware of Heltons achievement, he was happy for him. "I helped him? Good, Im glad that he got it and he got it against me," Fernandez said. "Thats good, Im pretty happy for him." It could be Fernandezs last start at home where he is 7-0 with a 1.29 ERA as the Marlins plan on shutting him down in early September. His next two starts are currently scheduled to be on the road although his second start could be pushed back for another home game. "I think the fans are big-time," Fernandez said. "Its a big help and Im really loving it and enjoying pitching at home." Giancarlo Stanton led off the fourth with a double and scored on an RBI single by Ed Lucas. Adeiny Hechavarria followed with an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Marisnick for the 3-0 lead. "It gives you a certain amount of comfort knowing that weve put some runs on the board finally and that we know Jose is going to compete," Lucas said. "Lately he hasnt really given up anything so all it really takes is a couple." Tulowitzkis season-high 10-game hitting streak ended going 0 for 4. DAVIE, Fla. -- Preparing for Monday Night Football, Brandon Marshall dropped a pass during drills Thursday, picked up the ball and gave it an angry boot. Not that emotional outbursts take practice, but Marshall said hes planning a prime-time doozy. The mercurial Miami Dolphins receiver complained Thursday that he has been playing with his emotions in check and will show more passion Monday against the New York Jets. "My goal is to get thrown out midway through the second quarter," Marshall said. He mentioned that objective four times during a 12-minute interview session. When asked if he was joking, Marshall said no. "Im serious. They want to fine me, itll probably be like a $50,000 fine. But Im going to play. That quarter and half Im out there, Im going to play like a monster." In July, Marshall disclosed he was diagnosed earlier this year with borderline personality disorder, which stems from such things as a negative self-image and a fear of failure. On Thursday, he said efforts to keep his emotions on an even keel have hurt his play. The two-time Pro Bowl receiver has 22 catches this year but only one touchdown, and hes tied for third in the NFL with five drops, including three in the end zone. Any deficiencies have been magnified because the Dolphins are 0-4. "The past four games, its been tough for me trying to control some things," he said. "Im just going to let it out. I dont care if they have two, three cameras on me, I dont care if I have penalties. It doesnt matter. Im going to let it all out. "Im best when I play emotional, Im best when I play with passion, and you guys are going to see that on Monday Night Football. I dont know if its throwing a football 15 yards into the bleachers and getting a 15-yarder, or punting the ball and getting thrown out of the game, but something is going to happen." Marshalls pledge comes with the offence in transition because of quarterback Chad Hennes season-ending shoulder injury. Matt Moore, who will make his first start with the Dolphins, arched his eyebrows when told that Marshall said he hoped to get kicked out in the second quarter. Would a more emotional Marshall be a good thing? "Um, I dont know. Now its like Im a doctor," Moore said. "Brandons got to be himself. Everybodys got to be themselves. Hes going to be at the emotional level he needs to be at to be at his best. How about that answer?" Coach Tony Sparano said Marshall at his most fiery would help the Dolphins, and he wasnt concerned about penalties or an ejection. "Obviously Brandon is 50 per cent kidding," Sparano said. "I know one thing about that guy -- hes not going to do anything to hurt this team. The people in that locker room are important to him. "But sometimes on the field hes bigger than life when he gets the ball and starts rolling. He can be that way. I think thats the part Brandon is talking about." Marshall had 86 catches for 1,014 yards last season, his first with the Dolphins. But his streak of three successive 100-catch seasons ended, he scored only three touchdowns, and he twice drew penalties for tossing the ball to the sideline after a play. Toward the end of last season, Marshall said he had been too boring, and hes again intent on stirring things up. A Dolphins official tried several times to end Thursdays interview session, but Marshall kept talking, saying he discussed criticism he receives with members of his support group. "When you go through the things we went through, its like you feel like youve got to be perfect," Marshall said. "That puts you in this bubble, and its kind of uncomfortable. Youre not human if you dont have bad days. "Ive been living in a bubble a little bit, trying to control myself instead of being me. Youve got to be able to turn that switch on and off. On Monday Night Football, Im going to turn that switch on and be a monster. When I catch a ball, I might bang my head with a football. I might get into a shoving match with somebody. Watch Kentucky vs. Michigan live on TSN at 5pm et/2pm pt. The winner will move on to the Final Four, a place both squads are very familiar, to battle Wisconsin next Saturday. Kentucky used a determined second-half comeback to down intrastate rival Louisville on Friday night. The Wildcats trailed until the final minutes of regulation, where they grabbed a slim lead and held on to advance. It was the opposite story for Michigan, which played Tennessee in the Sweet 16 two days ago. The Wolverines held a large advantage throughout the contest, but the Volunteers kept chipping away until it was a one-possession game. Michigan didnt let Tennessee complete the comeback though, thus setting up this showdown with the Wildcats. Kentucky leads the all-time series between these two programs, 4-2. The last time the squads met, Michigan pulled out an 81-78 overtime victory back in 1993. John Caliparis Wildcats struggled to find their identity this season, especially down the stretch. But the young squad, made up of mostly freshman and sophomores, got hot at the perfect time, and has beaten teams like defensive powerhouse Kansas State, top-seeded and previously unbeaten Wichita State, and defending national champion Louisville in this tournament. It was a gritty performance versus the Cardinals on Friday, and required some skillful free-throw shooting, particularly in the second half when they went 14-of-16 at the stripe. Freshman star Julius Randle provided yet another double-double in the win, notching 15 points to go with a team-best 12 rebounds. Dakari Johnson and Aaron Harrison each tallied 15 points in the win, and Andrew Harrison tacked on 14 for the Wildcats. Some Louisville foul trouble also helped Kentucky, as Montrezl Harrell and Stephan Van Treese both exited for the Cards after fouling out late. On a team that has a roster full of potential, but very little experience, Randle has stood out as not only a top NBA prospect, but as the teams leader and go-to scorer.dddddddddddd He averages a double-double heading into this game, netting 15.1 ppg while bringing down a team-high 10.7 rpg. His .708 free-throw percentage was a big help down the stretch against Louisville. James Young, who fouled out against the Cardinals, is second on the team in scoring with 14.1 ppg, although Aaron Harrison is also averaging 14.1 ppg. His twin brother Andrew Harrison checks in with 11.1 ppg, adding a team-best 144 assists to his stat line. As a team, UK is putting up 75.4 ppg while allowing 66.5 ppg. At one point, Michigan held a 15-point lead in the second half before Tennessee mounted its comeback attempt. The Vols climbed to within one with six seconds left, but Michigans Jordan Morgan drew a foul, which gave the Wolverines a chance to create a bit more separation. Thanks to four players who scored in double figures, the Wolverines were able to fend off the surging Vols, whose Cinderella-like run came to an end in the Sweet 16. Morgan appropriately led the team in scoring with 15 points, adding a team- high seven rebounds in the process. Nik Stauskas had a below-average day shooting (5-of-12 from the field, 3-of-8 from 3-point range), but still chipped in 14 points in the win. Glenn Robinson III added 13 points for Michigan, and Caris LeVert contributed 10 with five assists. As a team, the Wolverines hit 55.1 percent of their total shots. With his 14-point effort on Friday, Stauskas saw his team-leading scoring average take a slight dip. He still nets 17.3 ppg, also adding team-bests in 3-point shooting percentage (.44 and assists (115). Robinson III checks in at second on the roster in scoring with his 13.1 ppg, and LeVert adds 13 ppg. Imagine what the Wolverines would be capable of if they had a healthy Mitch McGary, although Morgan has been nothing less than stellar in this tournament playing the role of the teams big man. Morgan averages a team-high in rebounding (5 rpg), and nets a club-best 69.4 percent of his field goal attempts. As a team, the Wolverines are scoring 74 ppg while giving up 64.8 ppg. ' ' '

SEATTLE - Before Cesar Ramos took the mound, Joe Maddon raved about how the left-hander had made the transition from reliever to starter and pitched well with Tampa Bays pitching staff thinned by injuries. Then Ramos got battered for three innings by Seattles bats and got no help from a shaky defensive night by the Rays. Ramos was knocked around early by the Mariners in their 12-5 win over the Rays that included video reviews on consecutive batters in the first inning and Seattle ace Felix Hernandez getting ejected in the seventh inning. "We got ambushed. We just sashayed into the canyon and they were firing from both sides," Maddon said. Ramos had allowed only nine total runs and 18 hits all season. By the end of the third inning, hed given up 11 hits and nine runs — although only five of those were earned because of four errors in the first two innings by Tampa Bays defence. The Rays committed three errors in the second inning, tying a franchise record. It was a difficult opening to a West Coast road trip for Maddons crew. "They came out aggressive and I took too long to adjust," Ramos said. "I started pitching backward later and started having more success." Even though Ramos got battered, he settled down and helped save Tampa Bays bullpen by getting through 6 2-3 innings. He didnt allow a hit after the third, retiring the final 12 batters he faced. He set career bests for innings pitched and pitches (114) although few will look beyond the rough beginning. "I appreciate him even more for what he did after the bad start," Maddon said. "A lot of guys would not do what he did, the way he saved the rest of the staff. A lot of guys would have caved right there and he did not cave." Hernandez (4-1) won for the first time in more than a month. He took a shutout bid into the seventh inning, then gave up a three-run double to Ryan Hanigan with two outs and was pulled. At that point, Hernandez was fuming about the strike zone of plate umpire Mark Ripperger. On his way off the mound, Hernandez had a few words for Ripperger. Hernandez said he couldnt repeat anything he uttered. "Im sure he got his moneys worth. I didnt understand everything he said," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I kind of knew it was going to happen because he was not happy." Hernandez rebounded from a rough last four starts. It was his first start for the Rays since Aug. 15, 2012, when he tossed a perfect game at Safeco Field. Asked his thoughts on giving Hernandez a big early lead, Maddon said, "Thats called being sub-optimal." James Jones doubled, singled and scored in each of the first three innings as the Mariners took a 9-0 lead. Robinson Cano drove in Jones twice. They werent alone at providing production at the top of Seattles order. Stefan Romero homered, doubled and singled and Corey Hart had two hits and two RBIs. Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer and Mike Zunino added a solo shot for Seattle. The rare back-to-back replays came in the first inning as Cano and then Hart both barely missed home runs on fly balls that hit the yellow line atop the fence and bounced back. Umpires ruled both balls in play, and their calls were confirmed. Cano wound up with a double on his drive to left field, Hart was thrown out trying for a double on his shot to right. "That was pretty weird. You had nothing to lose by asking them to review them," McClendon said. NOTES: Rays LHP David Price will make his first career start at Safeco Field on Tuesday. INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers pulled off one more bold move before Thursdays trading deadline. Less than three weeks after signing Andrew Bynum, Indiana sent Danny Granger and a 2015 second-round draft pick to Philadelphia in exchange for former first-round pick Evan Turner and forward Lavoy Allen. The teams confirmed the deal late Thursday after the NBAs league office approved it. The draft pick originally belonged to Golden State. Yahoo! Sports first reported the trade. Indiana now adds two young forwards -- players who could help them as they attempt to dethrone two-time defending NBA champion Miami and finally win their first NBA title. But they had to give up Granger, a fan favourite who was once considered the face of the franchise. "We thank Danny for his 8 1/2 seasons with us and we appreciate everything he did for us in his time here," president of basketball operations Larry Bird said in a statement. "We felt we needed to make this trade to strengthen the core unit and our bench. In Evan and Lavoy, we think we got two really good players that can help us and we look forward to what they can bring." What the rebuilding 76ers are getting is 30-year-old forward who missed all but five games last season with a knee injury and almost the first two months of this season with a strained left calf. Granger, who led Indiana in scoring for the five straight seasons before his knee injury, also has an expiring contract, and Philadelphia will get another pick in a draft many believe will be rife with talent. The trade also could help teams on both ends of the NBAs spectrum. Indiana has now picked up three former 76ers this month -- Bynum, Turner and Allen -- in an effort to add more scoring punch for their expected playoff showdown with Miami. The Pacers already have the best record in the East (41-13) and lead the Heat by two games in the chase for home-court advantage. Philadelphia, meanwhile, went into Thursday with the second-worst record in the league at 15-40 and now appears poised to make a run at surpassing Milwaukee for the worst mark in the NBA. In a flurry of moves, the 76ers picked up a handful of draft picks, a few veterans and lost two of their top four scorers. Turner, a 6-foot-7 guard, was the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2010 after winning college basketballs player of the year award. He was averaging a team-high 17.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists and could become a free agent after this season. He has averaged of 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game in 3 1/2 NBA seasons. Granger was averaging 8.3 points since returning from a strained left calf in mid-December, but he has career averages of 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He played in the 2009 All-Star Game and was voted the leagues Most Improved Player in 2008-09. The 76ers also sent Spencer Hawes, their top rebounder, to Cleveland earlier in the day. He was averaging 13.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in the final year of his contract. But Philadelphia certainly loaded up on second-round picks. In addition to getting Indianas choice, the 76ers also acquired two second-round picks, forward Earl Clark and centre Henry Sims in the deal with Cleveland and added guard Eric Maynor from Washington in a three-way deal that netted a 2016 second-round pick from Denver and a 2015- second-round pick from New Orleans. And the usually cost-conscious Pacers now look like they are loading up on big bodies for the playoffs. Theyve added the 7-foot Bynum, a former All-Star who missed all of last season in Philly because of knee injuries. This season, he signed with Cleveland as a free agent before getting traded to Chicago and then released. Indiana signed Bynum on Feb. 1 and though he has not played, coach Frank Vogel said he didnt expect Bynum to play for a few weeks. Allen, a 6-foot-9, 255-pound forward, was averaging 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds with Philadelphia. To clear room on the roster, Indiana waived Orlando Johnson, a second-year guard they obtained in a draft night trade in 2012. "Orlando is a great kid," said Bird. "We appreciate everything hes done for us and hope he has a long and successful career." Walter Payton Jersey . WINNIPEG -- The Winnipeg Jets have a new coach on a short-term deal who knows he has a long-term project on his plate. "Weve got our challenges," Paul Maurice said after taking in his first practice with the team Monday morning. "Im not saying Im coming in here and taking this team to a completely different level over the next week." But the veteran coach of more than 1,000 NHL games, who took the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup final in 2002, says he sees a lot of potential in the Jets. "Youth size and speed is the easiest way for me to sum that up. I like some of the pieces and some of the parts." The size was apparent when he stepped on the ice with the team at the MTS Centre. "This is the first time that Ive ever as a coach felt short and thats a really, really nice feeling," he said, following practice, as he met with reporters for the first time since arriving in Winnipeg after Claude Noels firing Sunday. The last straw for general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was last weeks 6-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Jets seemed to have taken a step backward rather than move away from the defensive lapses that have left them 19-23-5 and last in the Central Division. For 2 1/2 years, Noel tried to inject a more responsible, defensive gene into the Jets, after they moved to Winnipeg from Atlanta. Now its Maurices turn and he agreed that seems to be whats missing. "My concerns are -- and you should never introduce a negative but Ill get to this now -- getting them to play a game that has a defensive component in it (and) that, for those players that have been here a long time, they havent done it." He says its his job to find a way to get players to buy into a system they can play that will help get them out of a slump that is sapping their confidence and building frustration. They have the skills, he suggests. "Youve seen it in the games where this team can look so dominant at points in time and then you question where that goes," he said. Although hes been coaching in the NHL for almost 20 years, he said something he has learned relatively recently is that it takes time to work with players on an individual basis to help them grow and develop. "Motivation is different for each player but at the end of the day with this group, with what theyre going through, they just want to get out of it," he said. "They just want to win. They want this to go away. The anger, the frustration by the fans, its the same as the frustration in that locker-room. They want to find a way out. Its the coaching staffs job now to lead that way out." The Jets are on a five-game losing streak and well out of that playoff spot Maurice says is one of his objectives. But he says creating confidence in a game the players can understand is his primary goal. "Im used to having some challenges. You know, the underdog team that at the very least fights like a dog," he said. "Thereve been too many years where we got to within a point but there werent many when I walked away saying there was a whole lot more left on the table." At least for now, hes only here for the rest of the season, which will end April 10 for the Jets unless their game turns around. Maurice, 46, also coached the Toronto Maple Leafs for a couple of seasons and recently tried the KHL in Russia but opted to return home to be closer to his family. Other than juggling lines a little, he didnt make a lot of changes prior to Monday nights game against the visiting Phoenix Coyotes. That includes leaving Dustin Byfuglien as a forward, although he says he can see him making major contributions as a blue-liner as well. Byfuglien is one of the top-scoring defencemen in the NHL but his minus-16 rating prompted Noel to try switching him to forward. "Were not trying to go out there and change everything we do tonight," said centre Bryan Little, who will be playing on a line with familiar partner Andrew Ladd but also Michael Frolik. "Hes been here less than 24 hours and I think he realizes that and hes not going to change too much tonight but he expects us to work hard." Little says he expects the changes to come once the Jets get some practice days. The players accepted much of the blame for Noels firing and Little said a game will help. WASHINGTON -- After scoring two goals for the first time in his NHL career, Dmitry Orlov was set to pace a big win for the Washington Capitals. But that changed when he committed a five-minute major penalty and helped pave the way for a comeback by the Philadelphia Flyers. Vincent Lecavalier scored at 2:45 of overtime and the Flyers rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 5-4 victory on Sunday. Trailing 4-2 entering the third period, the Flyers started their comeback when Jakub Voracek scored a power-play goal at 11:58. The Flyers were given a five-minute advantage when Orlov received a major penalty for boarding Brayden Schenn at 9:33. After Philadelphia sent goalie Steve Mason off for an extra skater, Claude Giroux sent the game to overtime, scoring his second goal of the game with 65 seconds left in the third. Adam Hall also scored for the Flyers, Kimmo Timonen had three assists and Mason made 25 saves. The defining play came when Orlov retaliated for a similar hit moments earlier by Schenn. "I understand you want payback, but youve got to be disciplined," Washington coach Adam Oates said. "You expect the other team to have a push. But lets not give them the push." Washington is familiar with the situation. It was the 14th time this season the Capitals blew a two-goal lead. "(The Flyers) are going to try to intimidate you and we just needed to play our game," Washington forward Eric Fehr said. "Thats not the style we play. We dont try to intimidate teams. We try to out-skill teams, out-work teams and try to score goals that way. We have to stick to our game plan and not get baited into theirs." Washington had a chance to pass Philadelphia in the Metropolitan Division and get into playoff position for the first time since Jan. 18, when it was mired in a seven-game losing streak. But the Flyers left D.C. with an uplifting victory. "Coming through in one of the biggest moments of the year right now is great to see," Mason said. "For us to be able to force overtime and get the one point at least and then come through and get the second one against a divisional opponent who is right behind us in the standings, its huge." After getting outshot 17-6 in the opening period, Philadelphia put 30 shots on goal to 12 for the Capitals. "First period wasnt good. I thought that we were good after that," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "I liked the second period. I liked the third obviously." Braden Holtby had 31 saves. Mike Green had three assists for Washington. Marcus Johansson and Jay Beagle also scored goals for the Capitals in a physical game. Washington took the lead as Troy Brouwer passed from behind the net to Orlov, whose slap shot rattled the corner post for his second goal of the season at 6:06 of the first. Philadelphia tied it at 11:22 of the period when Giroux scored on a slap shot on a power play. Even as some Flyers celebrated the goal, officials initially failed to count it. But 90 seconds of playing time later, after a stoppage and a video review, Giroux was awarded his team-high 20th goal. The Capitals regained the lead three seconds after the expiration of a power-play chance as Johansson tipped-in a red line pass from Jason Chimera for his eighth goal at 13:56. Philadelphia tied it at 12:50 of the second period with a turnover from Washingtons Alex Ovechkin, who left the puck near his own goal, expecting a trailing teammate to pick it up. But the Flyers Sean Couturier was the first one to it and passed to Hall for a blast from the point. Less than a minute later, Green assisted on a goal by Beagle to help the Caps retake the lead and also assisted on Orlovs second goal of the game at 16:23 of the second to give Washington a 4-2 lead going into the third period. But thats when Washington fell into Philadelphias aggressive style of play. "Thats the kind of game that that team wants to play," Oates said. "Theyre good at that. Were not." NOTES: Washington was without Mikhail Grabovski, who aggravated a left ankle injury in the first game after the Olympic break. The injury had forced him to miss eight games before the break. ... MONTREAL -- George Chuvalo wants the world to know he was more than just a big lug who could stand in a boxing ring and take punches all night. The Toronto native was a top 10-ranked fighter in the golden age of heavyweights, taking on the best of his era, including Muhammad Ali, George Foreman and Floyd Patterson. He inflicted more damage than he absorbed in his 22-year career, but the perception lives on of the plodding boxer with the iron chin that was formed during dramatic bouts in 1966 and 1972 with Ali, perhaps the greatest heavyweight of all time. There was also the misery he endured after his retirement in 1978, losing three sons and his wife to drugs and suicide, perhaps the most painful blows of all. He addresses those issues in "Chuvalo: A Fighters Life", an autobiography released on Tuesday that was written with veteran boxing writer Murray Greig. It is a chronological recounting of his fight career, but Chuvalos voice, his love of storytelling and his frankly expressed opinions on the good and terrible things in his life are all over it. That is what makes it a better read than your average as-told-to book by an ex-athlete. It also describes a boxers early life, before the headline bouts at Madison Square Garden, of being broke most of the time and leaving a wife and young children at home to drive a shaky jalopy to fight for too-little money in a small-town arena. And it recalls the glory days of heavyweight prize fighting, when major bouts were front-page news and the stars were not like todays six-foot-eight giants who jab and do little else in the ring. That Chuvalo emerged from it all without a slurred tongue and with his memory and sense of humour intact may be his biggest victory. "I wanted to leave something for my grandchildren to read about their grandfather and know about me," the 76-year-old Chuvalo said of the book in a recent interview. But he also would like them to know that he was more than just one of the many victims of Alis flair and skill. "When people think of me, they think of me fighting Muhammad," he said. "Its hard for them to think of anything else. "But I had close to 100 fights. The perception of me is as a tough guy who could take a shot. I was supposed to have the best chin in boxing. It clouds my other abilities." From his first fight in 1956, a second-round knockout of Gordon Baldwin, to his third-round KO of George Jerome in 1978, Chuvalo compiled a record of 73 wins (64 by knockout), 18 losses and two draws. Although he was stopped short of the distance by Foreman and Joe Frazier, he was never knocked down in the ring. It is one of the first issues he deals with in the book. "Today, most people think I was a tough guy who took a good rap, which is fine," he writes. "But I was a much better defensive fighter than I ever got credit for. I didnt get hit with half the punches people think I did. If that were true, Id be walking around on my heels today. Nobodys that tough." Chuvalo never won a world title, losing to Ernie Terrell in his only attempt in 1965, a fight he feels was fixed by mobsters. But he was Canadian champion for most of 17 years, back when that title still mattered. And one of his favourite funny stories was about how he became champion of Haiti in 1972. He was voted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997. There was also a statue of him erected in his ancestral hometown in Bosnia. But his defining moment was in Toronto on March 29, 1966, when he stood up to Alis brilliance for 15 rounds and became a national hero simply for not going down. He did the same over 12 rounds in a rematch in Vancouver six years later. Perhaps ironically, Chuvalo feels Ali had the best chin of any opponent he faced, along with being the best boxer of all time. He names Foreman and Mike DeJohn as the hardest punchers he encountered. He left the painful stories of his family for last. No blood in the ring was quite as gruesome as finding a son dead in a hotel room with a needle in his arm, or of his first wife Lynne succombing to dispair and taking her own life. He spares no details. Chuvalo has since remarried, and he visits schools across Canada to deliver an anti-drug message. Somehow, he maintains a positive approach to life, concentrating on his two remaining children and his grandkids. Even then, he dedicates the book to his granddaughter Rachel Chuvalo, who died of cancer last year. The fighters life has been a tough one indeed, in and out of the ring. cheap nfl jerseys . DORAL, Fla. - Steve Stricker usually doesnt show up at a tournament on Sunday. He made an exception for the Cadillac Championship, and it made perfect sense. And not just because snow is in the forecast at home in Wisconsin. This is the 20-year anniversary of the first time Stricker played the Blue Monster at Doral. Now it seems as if hes on a blind date. "You know youre at Doral, but it doesnt feel anything like it," Stricker said Tuesday. "A few holes, they havent changed. But then you step up there, and 80 per cent of them look different from the tee." And that was before he saw the Trump helicopter in all its glory to the left of the 10th tee. "Isnt that something?" Stricker said. "That was probably the first thing they built, that helipad." Donald Trump bought Doral and is putting a golden touch on the resort, which includes the Blue Monster (now officially known as Trump National Doral). He brought in Gil Hanse, the architect who is designing the Olympic golf course in Rio, for a makeover the likes of which the PGA Tour has never seen. Some things havent changed — the tropical warmth, and jetliners soaring over the golf course every minute as they descend on Miami International Airport. Trump didnt get the flight patterns changed. Not yet, anyway. But with few exceptions, its a brand new course. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain is in his first year on the PGA Tour. He only moved to Miami in December. He has played Doral four times, making this the one course he knows better than the other 68 players in the field, who are getting to know it for the first time. "Thats the feeling I have everywhere I go," he said. "Now they know how I feel." The opening hole used to be one of the easiest par 5s on tour. A big tee shot in the fairway would leave a short iron into the green for the second shot. Making par felt like losing a shot to the field. Stricker played a practice round with Jim Furyk, a past champion at Doral. Furyk hit a tee shot down the middle and had his head down as he walked toward the ball. Finally, he looked at his next shot — just under 260 yards to go, down and to the right with water wrapping around the right side of the green and bunkers dotting the landscape. "Wow," Furyk said. "Youre going to be saying that a lot today," Stricker told him. Whether the changes are for the better wont be known until Thursday when the scores count, and even then the opinions will vary. Odds are the player with a 68 might have a different answer from the guy who shot 75. Its longer and stronger. Perhaps the biggest change on any section of the golf course is the 15th and 16th holes. The par-3 15th is only about 150 yards, but water wraps around all but the far right side of the green. Jordan Spieth hit an 8-iron to the far back of the green. It landed about six paces from the back and wound up down the bank and into the water. The short par-4 16th is a driver over the water, unless a player chooses to lay up with an iron to the right. Spieth was stunned to learn the lake wasnt there before. This is one time the 20-year-old Texan has an advantage. He knows the course about as well as anyone, which is not very well at all. "Everyones experience is gone," Stricker said. As for Tiger Woods? He is a four-time champion at Doral. He often talks about putting from memory, which will do him little good on a course where the greens have been redone. The shape of some holes is entirely different. There are slopes on the greens that werent there before. Woods was not at Doral on Tuesday, and the tournament was still awaiting word on whether the lower back injury that led him to withdraw from the Honda Classic on Sunday will be healed enough to play. If he does, hell get one practice round on the Blue Monster before he defends his title. "Its going to be a bit of a shock to him, I think because its just such a different look," Jason Day said. Justin Rose, who won at Doral two years ago, would rather a course go through a massive overhaul than just a few tweaks. This was an overhaul. Trees are gone. Others have been planted. There are bunkers where there had been grass (left of No. 3). There is water where there wasnt water. "So you dont get the sense of being on the same golf course," Rose said. "I think if they had just reworked the greens and everything else looked identical, that might mess with your instincts more. But I think you really just view this as a new golf course. I didnt bring my yardage book from the past number of years. So its a clean sheet." The busiest guys all week have been the caddies. Jimmy Johnson, who works for Stricker, went back to the course Monday evening after a practice round to study. He normally would have been out there by himself. But when he arrived at the par-5 eighth hole — a completely different look with carry-over water for the second shot — he found three other caddies and joined them in stepping off the yardage for the best place to lay up. "It took us 40 minutes," he said. cheap jerseys from china . The capacity crowd chanted his name in unison. Finally, some runs. DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent was sentenced Friday to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation for a drunken car crash that killed his friend and teammate, Jerry Brown. Brent was convicted Wednesday of intoxication manslaughter for the December 2012 crash on a suburban Dallas highway that killed Brown, who was a passenger in Brents car. Brent could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. Brent, a Cowboys defensive tackle, and Brown, a linebacker on the practice squad, also played together at the University of Illinois and were close friends. They were headed home from a night of partying with Dallas teammates when Brent lost control of his Mercedes and crashed. Officers who arrived on scene saw Brent trying to pull Browns body from the wreckage. Blood tests pegged Brents blood alcohol content at 0.18 per cent, which is more than twice the states legal limit to drive of 0.08 per cent. Prosecutors told jurors that the burly, 320-pound lineman had as many as 17 drinks on the night of the crash. One of Brents lawyers, George Milner, argued that Brent wasnt drunk and was only "guilty of being stupid behind the wheel of a car." He contended that Brent couldnt have had nearly as much to drink as prosecutors said he had, and that the police blood tests were flawed. Brents lawyers pushed their case for probation Thursday, calling a Dallas County official who testified that the county currently has 34 intoxicatioon manslaughter cases that resulted in probation.dddddddddddd. Kevin Brooks, one of Brents lawyers, said the one-time defensive tackle would be easy to monitor because of "who he is and who he was." Brent retired from football last year. Browns mother, Stacey Jackson, has also publicly forgiven Brent. When asked Thursday if she holds Brent responsible for her sons death, she said: "Hes still responsible, but you cant go on in life holding a grudge. We all make mistakes." Prosecutors pushed for prison time for Brent, who went to trial only weeks after another Texas intoxication manslaughter case sparked widespread public outrage. In that case, a defence expert argued that the defendant, a 17-year-old boy who caused a drunken crash that killed four people, deserved leniency because his parents coddled him into a sense of irresponsibility -- a condition the expert termed "affluenza." The teen wasnt given prison time. On Thursday, prosecutor Rebecca Dodds emphasized Brents 2009 drunken driving arrest in Illinois to press the states argument that he deserves prison time. In that case, he served 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to a misdemeanour charge. "Probation doesnt work for Josh Brent," prosecutor Rebecca Dodds told the jury during closing statements in the punishment phase. Brent played in all 12 games for the Cowboys in 2012 before the crash. Brown made the practice squad that season. ' ' '

TORONTO -- Brett Lawrie has apologized to the Blue Jays after an angry dugout exchange with manager John Gibbons. Lawrie was fired up after teammate Adam Lind was held by third base coach Luis Rivera on Lawries fly ball during the ninth inning of Sundays 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. When he returned to the dugout, Lawrie and Gibbons yelled at each other as Jose Bautista stepped in to talk down the third baseman from Langley, B.C. The argument became a moot point shortly after when Munenori Kawasaki hit a two-run double to win the game for Toronto. Lawrie declined to speak to media before Mondays game against the Atlanta Braves, but he addressed his teammates privately. Gibbons said hed spoken to Lawrie and considered the matter settled. "Its over with. We dealt with it. Weve just moved on," said Gibbons. Bautista also tried to downplay the exchange, and repeated he believed Lawrie had been confused by what was happening on the field. "Everyone noticed his reaction was not the best," said Bautista. "But I talked to him and I understood that he got confused a little bit. Caught up in the moment, thats it. Its in the past. It got addressed. Shouldnt be any problem moving forward." Lind, not known for his speed, said hed already made his mind up to stop at third. "Thank God I didnt go, Id probably have been out." "I know (Lawrie) wants the RBI," added Lind. "He wants to drive in runs to help his team win ballgames. Sometimes the smart thing to do is be conservative, especially when youre behind." Lawrie, who is batting .199 with five homers and 14 RBI in 36 games, is known for his fiery temper and all-out style of play that has sometimes gotten him into trouble since making his major-league debut with the Blue Jays in 2011. "His intensity is what makes him good. So I dont think that he should not play with intensity or dial it down," said Bautista. The Blue Jays announced that Lawrie was day-to-day with a leg injury after stealing second base in the sixth inning of Mondays game against the Atlanta Braves. Mark DeRosa pinch ran for Lawrie after the third baseman advanced to third on Emilio Bonifacios ground out. It was an eventful series for Lawrie. The 23-year-old was also ejected from Fridays game following a strikeout when he dumped his helmet and tossed his batting gloves in a manner that umpire Dan Bellino took offence to. Gibbons was also ejected for coming to Lawries defence. On Monday, Gibbons reiterated he didnt think his argument with Lawrie was a big deal. "I like Brett. Im glad we have him," said Gibbons. "I think hes going to be a good player, a real good player for a lot of years. It just blew up on him yesterday but its over with as far as Im concerned." cheap jerseys From China . In the second half against Memphis, his mission was simply to score as often as possible. He had 30 of his 37 points after halftime to help the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Grizzlies 113-107 on Friday night. Durant made 10 of 15 shots and all eight of his free throws after halftime to help the Thunder hold off a furious rally. "I just told myself to be aggressive, to score," said Durant, the NBAs scoring leader. "Thats all I said to myself at half. I was frustrated with the shots I was taking. I felt that I wasnt disciplined. I worked my fundamentals. I just wanted to be aggressive to score. I think thats what my team needed." Russell Westbrook had 21 points and six assists in 28 minutes, Serge Ibaka had 16 points and nine rebounds and Reggie Jackson added 14 points for the Thunder, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Oklahoma City had dropped every game since Westbrook returned from his latest knee surgery -- and nearly lost again because Mike Miller scored all 19 of his points in the fourth quarter to rally Memphis. Westbrook wasnt worried about the fact that the Thunder almost squandered the 16-point lead they had heading into the fourth. "We won, thats what Im going to take from it," Westbrook said. "We lost three in a row. We just won." Marc Gasol had 17 points and Zach Randolph added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who had won five of six. Memphis ran into a team that was tired of losing. "Theyre extremely talented, but they were very focused, locked in," Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. "They played at a very, very high level, I thought tonight, as well as Ive seen them play against us in a long, long time." Thunder guard Thabo Sefolosha left in the first half with a left calf strain and did not return. The Grizzlies made 26 of 40 shots in the second half, but couldnt stop Oklahoma City in the final minutes when the game got close. The Thunder offence broke out of a lull in the second quarter when Westbrook returned from a rest. Westbrook showed some of his old form when he froze Tayshaun Prince with a crossover dribble, then drained a mid-range jumper to give the Thunder a 70-55 edge. Durant scored 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting in the third quarter to help the Thunder take an 87-71 lead at the end of the period. Miller came off the bench and made three 3-pointers in the fourth to help the Grizzlies trim the deficit to 103-97 with 4:22 remaining. "In the fourth quarter, our bench was unbelievable," Prince said. "We (the starters) put them in a bad situation and they almost got us out of it." Memphis cut the margin to three before Durant made a baseline jumper on an assist from Westbrook with 1:24 to play, then a floater with 33 seconds remaining to seize control for good. "We cant afford to dig ourselves a hole like we did," Grizzlies guard Mike Conley said. "Theyre too good of a team, especially at home. They came out and they wanted to win this game from the very beginning." The Thunder finally resembled the team that has earned the top record in the Western Conference. They won for the first time since Feb. 13 and for the first time at home since Feb. 9 "It feels great," Durant said. "You never take it for granted. We learned a lesson after losing three in a row. BERKELEY, Calif. -- Every time Arizona had been challenged this season, the Wildcats survived by making big plays and big shots in the closing moments of big games. They finally found out what it feels like to be on other end of a celebration. Justin Cobbs hit a step-back jumper with 0.9 seconds left, and California stunned No. 1 Arizona 60-58 on Saturday night to hand the Wildcats their first loss of the season. "Wed always found a way to be on the positive end of it," Wildcats coach Sean Miller said. "Tonight in that same moment, we didnt make the shots and we didnt get the big stop." Cobbs, who scored Cals final 12 points, dribbled to his left and beat Nick Johnson before pulling up in front of an oncoming defender to sink the winning shot that sent a raucous, gold-shirt wearing crowd at Haas Pavilion spilling onto the court. Not realizing a timeout had been called, Cal coach Mike Montgomery and security had to frantically usher fans away before the final play. Gabe Yorks full-court pass was knocked down to give the Bears (15-7, 6-3 Pac-12) their first victory over a top-ranked opponent since Jan. 30, 1994, when they beat UCLA 85-70 at the Oakland Coliseum. "I think its just good for Cal, and I think its good for the university and the students to come out and have that kind of excitement," Montgomery said. "I think one of the things youre trying to generate is them enjoying the game, enjoying the experience, and I think there was some of that tonight." Arizona (21-1, 8-1), which had won a school-record 21 straight games after surviving to beat Stanford 60-57 on Wednesday night, was one of just three unbeaten teams left in Division I. Now only second-ranked Syracuse (21-0), which outlasted No. 17 Duke 91-89 in overtime Saturday, and No. 4 Wichita State (23-0) remain. Even worse for the Wildcats, Miller said starting forward Brandon Ashley appeared to have broken his right foot going for a rebound in the opening minutes. He was scheduled to have an X-ray when the team gets back in Tucson, Miller said. Cobbs finished with 19 points and seven assists, David Kravish had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Richard Solomon scored 12 points to propel Cal to one of the biggest wins in school history. The Bears improved to 3-24 against teams ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press poll, and they had never beaten a top-ranked team in Berkeley. "Just a lot of fun," Solomon said. Kaleb Tarczewski scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, and T.J. McConnell scored 13 points for the Wildcats, who shot just 32.3 per cent from the floor. Cal, which shot 44.6 per cent, held Johnson -- Arizonas star guard -- to just 4 points on 1-of-14 shooting. "Because weve been in this situation so many times, were really comfortable. We werent worried at all. We were ramped up," Tarczewski said. "Cobbs made a really, really tough shot." The game attracted quite an audience, too. There were 21 scouts from 14 different NBA teams in attendance. Former Wildcats coach Lute Olson sat in the stands behind Arizonas bench, and Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin -- a Cal alum -- also supported his Bears. "No. 1 brings out everybody," Montgomery said. The Wildcats rallied from nine points down in the first half and eight in the second to set up a furious finish. Arizona took the lead twice in the final minutes, and twice Cobbs came back with a tying score -- first on a runner in the lane and then on a pair of free throws. On the final sequence, Johnson missed a short jumper in the lane and Cal corralled the rebound. Cobbs let the clock tick down, then beat Johnson for a shot that will long be remembered in Berkeley. Fans had to be pushed back off the court in a weird and wild scene, with the public address announcer screaming for them to get back. The Bears soon gave them reason to come back and celebrate. "Honestly I was getting claustrophobic," Cobbs said, laughing. "I couldnt breathe." The Bears kept Arizonas big front line at bay from the start. Solomon made his first six shots, including a short jumper that put the Bears ahead 28-19 late with 5:18 remaining in the first half. Arizona answered back by converting steals into easy baskets, closing the half on a 10-2 run to cut Cals lead to 30-29. It was the seventh time Arizona had trailed at the half this season. Both teams had to overcome adversity after the break. Johnson seemed to be bothered by an injury to his left hand -- repeatedly shaking his wrist after shots and grimacing -- and Solomon was stuck in foul trouble. In the end, Cal just made one more play than Arizona. "We made plays to put us in that position," McConnell said. "But Cobbs made a good shot down the stretch." Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Chipper Jones singled home Jordan Schafer in the 12th inning to boost the Atlanta Braves to a 7-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Turner Field. Brian McCann went 4-for-5 with a pair of solo homers. Freddie Freeman had three hits, including a solo home run, in Atlantas third victory in four games. Jonny Gomes had four hits and scored twice for the Reds. Drew Stubbs knocked in three runs, but grounded into a double play with two men on base in the top of the 12th. Its always good to come through on the last at-bat. Its frustrating because Ive been so close the last few games, Jones said. Im swinging the bat a lot better and coming within milli-inches of hitting a couple of balls out, not getting enough of them. Two guys at the top set the table there the last inning, put good at-bats together and one finally fell in, so its nice to see. In the bottom half, Carlos Fisher (0-2) walked Schaefer and Martin Prado before Jones grounded a single through the right side. The throw to the plate was late, as the Braves evened the three-game series with the finale set for Sunday night. Scott Linebrink (1-1) pitched the final two innings to get the victory. Both starters saw early exits thanks to some offensive firepower. Bronson Arroyo surrendered nine hits and five runs over three innings, while Derek Lowe departed after yielding seven hits and five runs over 3 1/3 frames. The last two outings Ive just gotten killed, Arroyo said. I pitched less than six innings in two outings and thrown about 130 pitches, its not a real good number. The ball club came back tonight and tried to pick me up, but we just couldnt quite get it done. Arroyo has allowed 19 hits and 14 runs over his last two appearances. Weve been struggling as a starting rotation for a little while now as a whole, he said. Im the guy now thats really gotten killed the last 10 days. I just have to go back to the drawing board, simplify things and try to find a way to put a zero on the board, however youve got to do it. Losers in nine of their last 11 games, the Reds rallied from an early five-run deficit, but 13 men left on base hampered their chance to follow up Fridays 5-1 win. Jeremy Horst, promoted from Triple-A Louisville Saturday, made his major league debut and fanned four batters over 2 2/3 innings after taking over for Arroyo. He added an RBI single in the fifth inning. Jay Bruce killed a bases-loaded rally by grounding into a double play to complete the top of the first, and Eric Hinske singled in Jones in the bottom half. The Braves tacked on RBI singles from Schafer and Prado in the second. McCann and Freeman homered to right field in the third inning to provide the 5-0 margin. The Reds bounced back with a five-spot in the fourth. They loaded the bases with one out before Stubbs cleared them with a double to right. Brandon Phillips then doubled to left and scored on Joey Vottos base hit to center. Horsts first major league plate appearance resulted in an RBI base hit to drive in Gomes in the fifth, but McCann led off the bottom half with a blast over the wall in right-center to tie it at 6-6. Prado flied out to center to strand a runner at third in the sixth. Edgar Renteria singled to start the top of the 12th and Chris Heisey was intentionally walked with one out, but Stubbs grounded into his first double play all season to squash the rally. CALGARY -- Evgeni Nabokov finally made his debut for the New York Islanders, eager to put the ugliness of last season behind him. In his first game in an Islander uniform, Nabokov stopped 15 of 16 shots in two periods of pre-season action as New York lost 2-0 to Calgary on Tuesday. "I liked him, I liked him a lot," said Islanders assistant coach Dean Chynoweth. "Our plan going in was to give him two periods and let Mikko (Koskinen) go in for the third. We probably could have left (Nabokov) in, hes champing at the bit to get going." Nabokov, 36, refused to play for New York last season after the Islanders claimed him on Jan. 22 off NHL re-entry waivers, thwarting the Detroit Red Wings attempt to sign him. The Islanders suspended Nabokov for the remainder of the 2010-11 season for refusing to report to the team. "With the situation that went on last year, the guy couldnt have come in with a better attitude so thats been really good," said Chynoweth. "Hes been really good all camp." Nabokov was a 44-game winner with the San Jose Sharks in 2009-10 before struggling most of last season in the KHL. He is competing for a roster spot with incumbent starter Rick DiPietro and rookie Al Montoya, who reeled off an impressive 9-5-5 finish last season after being recalled from the minors in mid-February. Nabokov says he hopes to be the Islanders starter when they open the season on Oct. 8 at home to Florida. "My goal is to be in the net, to get the call and go in and do my job. But sometimes its out of your control," Nabokov said. "In a perfect world, I would want to play more exhibition games but its such a short pre-season and they were six goalies here. Its not my call, Im just going out there and doing my best." At the other end of the ice 27-year-old Swede Henrik Karlsson was perfect, stopping all 13 shots he faced. With Calgary icing the more veteran line-up, the young kids on the Islanders found it difficult to generate much offence. When they did, Karlsson was there to shut the door. "Not much to do today, but you have to stay focused and play for 60 minutes," Karlsson said. The six-foot-five goaltender re-signed with Calgary during the summer after going 4-5-5 last year as Miikka Kiprusoffs backup in his first taste of the NHL. "It would have been fun to get a couple more shots, but the team played good," Karllsson said.dddddddddddd"Some games are like that and you have to manage to play good in those kind of games." The game-winning goal came at 4:10 of the second period on a nice short-handed goal by Curtis Glencross, who took a pretty pass from Matt Stajan as he streaked through the slot and tucked a backhand behind Nabokov. "Its starting to feel better every game and thats the goal in pre-season," said Glencross, who is coming off a career-high 24-goal season that earned the potential unrestricted free agent a new US$10.2-million, four-year contract. The Flames trio of Glencross, Olli Jokinen, and David Moss was the only line for either team comprised of regular NHL linemates, and their familiarity showed as they created several decent scoring chances. "Theyve put Ollie and I and Mosser together here early to get things going again like last year when we played together," Glencross said. Calgary added a second goal at 4:21 of the third period when Lee Stempniak finished a two-on-one with Alex Tanguay, taking a perfect set-up from the veteran playmaker and firing his second pre-season goal behind Koskinen. "It was a great pass. I had a lot of time to put it in. I love getting passes like that," said Stempniak, who was acquired from the Phoenix at the end of August in exchange for Daymond Langkow. "It feels good to score goals, especially in the pre-season to try and build something and get on a roll heading into the regular season." Calgary improved to 2-3-0 with one pre-season game remaining, Thursday night versus the Coyotes. New York, which was playing just its third game, fell to 1-2-0 with two games remaining in a shorter than normal five-game pre-season slate. Notes: The Islanders sat numerous regulars including forwards John Tavares, Michael Grabner, Matt Moulson, and Kyle Okposo... Former Flames defenceman Steve Staios played in his third straight game for the New York. The 38-year-old is in the Islanders camp on a tryout basis... Calgary RW Jarome Iginla (back) is still not back skating. RW Rene Bourque is also nursing a nagging injury and isnt likely to return to action until the season opener. Veteran C Brendan Morrison (off-season knee surgery) is skating but has not been cleared for contact. His availability for the start of the regular season is not yet known. ' ' '

PORTLAND, Ore. -- San Antonio stars Tim Duncan and Tony Parker took the night off Wednesday. No matter. As is usual when the Spurs are without their stars, the rest of the team got the job done. Patty Mills came off the bench to score 29 points, Marco Belinelli hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:34 remaining and San Antonio rallied in the second half to pull out a 111-109 victory over the Trail Blazers. San Antonio has won two of three games this season when Duncan and Parker were both absent from the lineup. Mills helped fill the void with a 24-point second half. The fourth-year guard from Australia came off the bench to hit 13 of 26 shots against the Blazers. Belinelli had 20 points and Manu Ginobili 16 for San Antonio. Mills has been on a hot streak since the All-Star break concluded, scoring 25 and 29 points in the Spurs first two games back. "If it wasnt for him the last couple nights, we would have really struggled," San Antonio forward Danny Green said. "Hes doing what Tony usually does, in taking over in that fourth quarter." Mills explained his recent stretch in humble tones, saying "for me, its just been learning from great guys. Weve got three future Hall of Famers and a great coach, so Ive just sat back and learned." It wasnt just Mills, though. Belinelli hit four 3-pointers, and Tiago Splitter had 15 points and six rebounds in returning to the lineup for the first time since Feb. 6. "I thought the effort was fantastic," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. Portland was without leading scorer and rebounder LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed the game with a groin injury and is expected to be out at least a week. Also sidelined were forward Joel Freeland (knee) and centre Meyers Leonard (ankle). Aside from Duncan and Parker, the Spurs also were without guard Kawhi Leonard (right hand). Damian Lillard scored 31 points, including 15 during the fourth quarter, for Portland. Coming off his first All-Star game appearance, Lillard hit 13 of 21 shots and handed out six assists. Mo Williams had 19 points and Wesley Matthews 18 for the Blazers. Without Aldridge, Freeland and Leonard, the Blazers had to resort to playing a small lineup. It resulted in erratic play, with stretches when the Blazers offence went missing. "We tried to beat San Antonio at their game and they did it better than us," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "San Antonio is used to playing these games without their guys and they plug guys in and they play well." Trailing 81-79 after three quarters, San Antonio took command when Green hit back-to-back 3-pointers to fuel a 10-0 run at the fourth quarters outset. The Spurs led by as many as 10 points, but the Blazers eventually pulled even at 101-101 on Matthews steal and dunk with 1:52 remaining. On San Antonios next possession, Belinelli hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:34 left to put the Spurs back on top. Portland led by as many as eight points during the first half, and settled for a 52-51 halftime lead. Both teams had big runs during a free-flowing third quarter. Mills finished an 8-2 run with a layup to give San Antonio a 69-61 lead. Portland responded with seven consecutive points, then took a 79-75 lead when Williams scored six consecutive points late in the quarter. NOTES: Portland was the last NBA team to use the same starting lineup this season until Wednesday, when Dorell Wright replaced Aldridge against San Antonio. The Blazers are the first team since the 2010-11 Spurs to start the same lineup during its first 53 games. . Splitter returned to the lineup after missing the past four games with a calf injury. . Blazers forward Victor Claver, who hasnt played since Nov. 15 and has logged just three minutes of playing time this season, made a first-quarter appearance and played seven minutes . Brad Self and Dan Dawson both scored, with Dawson adding seven assists.Steve Yzerman and Hockey Canada are getting a little bit of everything with the eight defenceman named to represent Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The eight defencemen named – Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Dan Hamhuis, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, P.K. Subban, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Shea Weber – bring a blend of offence, defence, mobility, responsibility and physicality. For Canada, that responsibility may well start at the top with returnees Keith, Weber and Doughty. "To me they have everything you want in a defence pairing," TSN director of scouting Craig Button said of the potential top pairing of Keith and Weber. "They can skate, they can move the puck up the ice or they can join in the attack. They can play against the other teams best players and theyre going to play a lot of minutes." "Mike Babcock will have no hesitance to put those two out there against anybody at any time," Button added. While some of the players selected were academic, especially returnees Doughty, Keith and Weber, others such as P.K. Subban and Dan Hamhuis were believed to be bubble players until the day the roster was unveiled. Representing the oldest membeer of the defence corps and one of the youngest are both new additions to Canadas Olympic squad as 24-year-old Subban and 31-year-old Hamhuis will both be expected to fill Canadas niche needs.dddddddddddd "The bottom pair is exactly what we thought it would be," said NHL on TSN analyst Mike Johnson. "Subban is there for an infusion of offence, a change of pace on special teams and Dan Hamhuis is there for the other end: defence, shot-blocking and penalty-killing depending on the situation." The defence is a perfect balance of right-handed and left-handed shots, which was a conscious effort by Canadas management. That balance may have played in Vlasics favour as he edged teammate and 2010 Canadian Olympian Dan Boyle out of one of the coveted blue line spots. Button praised Vlasics inclusion on the team, complimenting the 26-year-olds composure. "Hes steady, hes consistent and he plays at a high level," Button said. "Its not just skating and competing, his mind is very, very strong. Mistakes are going to be at a minimum in this type of tournament so you want a guy thats comfortable playing in those big minutes and those important times and hes not going to make mistakes." ' ' '

LOS ANGELES -- Anthony Davis had 28 points and 15 rebounds, Eric Gordon also scored 28 and the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Los Angeles Lakers 132-125 Tuesday night to snap an eight-game losing streak. Brian Roberts scored 10 of his 19 points for New Orleans during a 1 1/2-minute span in the fourth quarter. Tyreke Evans had 24 points and 11 assists, helping the Pelicans salvage the finale of a five-game road trip that included a 32-point loss to the Clippers on Saturday night at Staples Center. The win ended a string of nine straight road losses to the Lakers and was only the third for New Orleans in the last 18 meetings overall -- including a 96-85 victory Nov. 8 in which Davis had a career-high 32 points. Pau Gasol had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who were attempting to match their longest winning streak of the season after beating Sacramento last Friday and Portland on Monday. The loss was their 27th in 35 games and dropped them back into sole possession of last place in the Western Conference, a half-game behind Sacramento and Utah. Newcomer Kent Bazemore had 23 points and Jordan Farmer added 20 off the bench for Los Angeles. Xavier Henry, playing his second game after missing the previous 28 because of a bone bruise on his right knee, had 12 points in 14 minutes. Gordons jumper gave New Orleans a 74-53 advantage with 9:54 left in the third quarter, but the Lakers narrowed the gap to 91-85 on Ryan Kellys 15-footer with 1:12 left in the period. That was as close as they got until a late push. Gasol made one of two free throws to cut New Orleans lead to 128-125 with 18.1 seconds to go. Gordon sank two foul shots at the other end, and Bazemore missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Anthony Morrow hit two foul shots with 11 seconds remaining to close out the scoring. Roberts made a 3-pointer, a 14-footer and five free throws -- three of them after getting fouled by Farmar on a 3-pointer -- to help the Pelicans open a 114-104 lead with 5:59 left. The Lakers had pulled to 97-93 on a fast-break layup by MarShon Brooks with 9 1/2 minutes to play. Davis helped the Pelicans take a 67-51 halftime lead with 19 points. The first-time All-Star made seven of his first eight shots, one night after missing his first 10 in a 96-89 loss at Sacramento while playing with a sore left shoulder. Gasol scored the Lakers first 13 points and had 17 by halftime. Starting point guard Kendall Marshall played 22 scoreless minutes with 10 assists -- the fourth time in the last four games that he didnt have a point. Seven different Stars scored in a 7-3 victory over the Nashville Predators. Tyler Seguin or Jamie Benn was not among them. Each player had an assist. Colton Sceviour, Trevor Daley and Ryan Garbutt each had a goal and an assist. Alex Goligoski had three assists, tying his career high. Going into the game, Seguin had 75 points and Benn 69. Dallas third-highest scorer was Goligoski, with 33. Vernon Fiddler, whose first-period goal was his fifth this season, said: "Its nice to get some depth scoring. At the end of the day, weve got to continue to do that. The big guns need some help with that, and it takes a little bit of pressure off of them." Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen allowed three goals on 28 shots. Pekka Rinne had 22 saves. After Nashville pulled within 5-3 in the third period on Eric Nystroms goal, Valeri Nichushkin and Cody Eakin scored 9 seconds apart for a 7-3 edge. Nichushkins unassisted goal went off Predators defenceman Shea Webers stick. "We tipped two in our own net," Weber said. "They got one off the skate, and then they scored off the rush. They got a little bit of everything, and it just wasnt good enough for us." Thats why Nashville coach Barry Trotz didnt consider pulling Rinne. "Not really, even when they got six and seven. Six and seven were deflected. There was nothing you could do about it." Stars coach Lindy Ruff, who preaches putting pucks on the net, was pleased about the four goals that deflected off teammates sticks or bodies. "We got some good breaks. We had a couple put in by their defencemen. We got enough pucks going to the net, and got rewarded for it." Goals by Garbutt and Fiddler gave the Stars a 2-0 lead after one period. Sceviour, Alex Chiasson and Daley scored in the second period that ended with a 5-2 advantage for Dallas. The Predators Patric Hornqvist and Michael Del Zotto also scored in the second. The victory improved Dallas playoff hopes. The Stars have 81 points -- three behind Phoenix, which has the Western Conferences last playoff position. The Stars have nine games remaining, including a game Saturday at St. Louis. Phoenix has eight to play. The game started well for the Stars against Nashville, which was coming off a 6-1 win over Buffalo on Thursday.dddddddddddd "They looked fresh," Trotz said. "They jumped on us. I dont know how many pucks we just got it to the red line and just turned it over and they transitioned on us, and its hard to play that way. Youre spending your energy in the wrong area." Garbutt gave Dallas a 1-0 lead when he tipped Antoine Roussels pass from the right corner past Rinne. The Stars took a 2-0 lead on a 2-on-1 rush at 14:05 of the first. As a defender slid to the ice attempting to block a shot, Sceviour passed across to Fiddler on the right side, and he drilled a snap shot into the net. Dallas outshot the Predators 9-5 in the first period. Nashvilles best chance to score came on the only shot during the power play, when Craig Smiths shot from the top of the left circle went off Lehtonens pads. Goligoski and Daley, Fridays starting defensive pair, each finished with plus-5 ratings. Ruff said: "Thats a good night when youre plus-5 on the score sheet. I think youve seen by ice times these last 30-40 games how much we think of that pair and how much difference they can make. They made some real good plays for us." VANCOUVER -- Vancouver Canucks 2013 first-round draft choice Hunter Shinkaruk will undergo hip surgery in early January and is expected to miss the rest of the WHL season. "Hes going to have hip surgery on Jan. 7, and hell be expected to rehabilitate for four to six months beyond that," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said Friday in an interview. Shinkaruks minimum recovery time gives him a chance to return in mid-May for the Memorial Cup tournament, if his Medicine Hat Tigers qualify by winning the WHL championship. But the odds of him coming back quickly appear long, given that hip problems usually rank among the most serious and require extended rehabilitation periods. Shinkaruk was chosen 24th overall in this years NHL draft and was among Vancouvers last pre-season cuts. The Medicine Hat captain was invited to Team Canadas selection camp for the world junior hockey championships, but was released for the second straight year after travelling to Sweden with the club before the tournament started. "Hes got a slightly torn labrum," said Gillis. "But it doesnt matter if its slightly or more torn. He suffered it early on in the season, tried to play through it and wanted to have an opportunity to make the world junior team. Clearly, his play dropped off fairly considerably after the injury. "He gave it his best effort and the plan all along was that this (decision to have surgery) was going to happen regardless, so it happened a little bit earlier." Gillis said the injury contributed to Shinkaruk, a 19-year-old Calgary native, not having the best opportunity to make Team Canada. The surgery will be performed in Vail, Colo., by Dr. Marc Phillipon, who specializes in repairing hip disorders. Shinkaruk was among two first-round choices selected by Vancouver this year. The Canucks took London Knights centre Bo Horvat with the ninth pick, which they acquired in a draft-day trade from New Jersey for goaltender Cory Schneider. Gillis expects Shinkaruk to be healthy in time for Vancouvers training camp in the fall. "We think hell make a fully recovery and that hell be fully cleared to try and make the hockey club in September," said Gillis. Shinkaruk has recorded five goals and 11 assists for 16 points with the Tigers this season. His junior team is also optimistic that he will bounce back from the ordeal. "We wish Hunter all the best for a successful surgery and a full recovery," said Medicine Hat general manager and coach Shaun Clouston in a release. cheap jerseys . -- New York Yankees centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was sent for an MRI Thursday of his ailing right calf, which was negative. cheap jerseys from china . ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves avoided arbitration Tuesday, agreeing to one-year deals with outfielder Michael Bourn for US$6.845 million, starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens for $5.5 million and reliever Eric OFlaherty for $2.49 million. The agreements were reached just before teams and players exchanged figures for arbitration hearings. The Braves also agreed on a minor-league contract with free-agent reliever Peter Moylan, who missed most of last season with injuries but had been a key member of the Atlanta bullpen. Bourn, who got a raise from $4.4 million, was acquired from Houston in July just ahead of the trade deadline. He led the NL in stolen bases for the third straight year with 61 and provided the Braves with a much-needed leadoff hitter. Barring a long-term deal, he can become a free agent after the 2012 season. Jurrjens, who made $3.25 million last season, was selected for his first All-Star game and went 13-6 with a 2.96 ERA. But he barely pitched in the second half because of a knee injury that required surgery, and hes been mentioned frequently in trade talks with the Braves having a surplus of top pitching proospects.dddddddddddd The deal with Jurrjens also includes incentives ranging from $25,000 if he pitches 175 innings to $150,000 if he reaches 215 innings. OFlaherty is a key member of the bullpen with Craig Kimbrel and Jonny Venters. The left-hander received a significant raise from his $895,000 salary after the best year of his career, a dominating 0.98 ERA in 78 appearances. With all arbitration-eligible players now under contract, the Braves are likely to have a payroll of around $80 million if they stick with the current roster. They also owe $10 million of Derek Lowes salary, even though he was dealt to Cleveland, which means total obligations will be in line with last seasons $91 million. That left in the room in the budget for a low-risk deal with Moylan, who underwent rotator cuff surgery but hopes to be recovered sometime around the start of the season. While the right-hander pitched only 13 times last season, he made at least 80 appearances three of the four previous years. The 33-year-old Australian was one of the teams main set-up relievers, proving especially effective in ground-ball situations. ' ' '

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Bernhard Langer won the Champions Tours Insperity Invitational for the third time, closing with a 1-under 71 on Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Fred Couples. Langer finished at 11-under 205 at The Woodlands to become the 10th 20-time winner on the 50-and-over tour. The 56-year-old German player also won the 2007 event at Augusta Pines and successfully defended his title in 2008 at The Woodlands. He opened this season with a victory in Hawaii. "Im hoping to add to that number," Langer said. "I hope Im not done yet. Im very blessed to have won 20 times in 6 1/2 years. Its been a great run and a wonderful achievement. I just feel like Im playing some of my best golf in my career." Couples, the former University of Houston player who won the 2010 event, finished with a 67. He won in March in Newport Beach, California. "On a golf course as hard as this, you cant really play relaxed golf," Couples said. "You have to pay attention to what youre doing. I didnt hit enough good shots to shoot a lot lower to catch Bernhard, although I got close to him." Colin Montgomerie was third at 9 under after a 70. His best finish on the tour is second in March in Newport Beach. The Scot had no complaints about his finish. "If youre second, third to Couples and Langer, youre doing OK," Montgomerie said. DETROIT -- Canadas Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch set a personal best score en route to the silver medal in pairs on Sunday at Skate America, the first stop on the ISU Grand Prix figure skating circuit. World champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov of Russia won the gold medal with 237.71 points, Moore-Towers and Moscovitch followed at 208.45 and Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia were third at 187.35. It was the same top-three order after Saturdays short program. "This is the kind of start we definitely wanted in an Olympic year," said Moscovitch, from Toronto. "Its a confirmation that we are doing the right thing with our programs. And we know there is still a lot of room for improvement." Moore-Towers and Moscovitchs previous best overall score was 199.50 set in a fourth place finish at the world championships last season. "Its really been a combination of factors thats helped us achieve these scores this early in the season," said Moore-Towers from St. Catharines, Ont. "Our programs are a lot more consistent and we are a lot better at telling a story when we perform." Margaret Purdy of Strathroy, Ont., and Michael Marinaro of Sarnia, Ont., were eighth. The Canadians were also pleased with their performance, seeing it as a building block to develop thheir Olympic season.dddddddddddd Moore-Towers and Moscovitch had some slight errors, such as his step-out on their side-by-side triple salchows. The free skate, to a "Fellini Medley" by Nino Rota, was not their original concept when they started preparing for the year. They didnt feel a strong connection to the first program, and switched to the Fellini selection for a better spirit. The pair said the Skate America scores for the program validated their decision. "Both feel that this is the program that will take us where we want to go," Moscovitch said. In womens singles competition, Japans Mao Asada beat American Ashley Wagner to take the championship. Asada, the leader going into the free skate, won despite a fall on her triple axel and a two-footed landing on her triple lutz. She scored 204.55 points, thanks to her elevated technical difficulty. Wagner, the 2012 Skate America champion, finished with 193.81. Russias Elena Radionova, only 14, finished third at 183.95 in her first ISU Grand Prix event. "I am not completely satisfied with my performance today," Asada said, through a translator. "This was a learning experience." Asada scored higher than Wagner in each of the five program component elements, more than overcoming a one-point deduction for falling. ' ' '

Deron Williamss decision to play in Turkey if the lockout remains could open the door for other NBA stars. Unless FIBA shuts it. Basketballs governing body has to sign off on these deals for players under contract, and the NBA Players Association expects that it will. But what if it doesnt? "I dont think thats going to be an easy transaction, to be honest with you," said agent Roger Montgomery, whose client Sonny Weems signed in Lithuania last week after playing last season with the Toronto Raptors. Weems, whose contract had expired, agreed to a one-year contract without an opt-out clause, meaning hes actually committed to spending the season in Europe. But the deal that Williams would get from Besiktas of Turkey -- and that any top-level NBA player would demand -- would allow him to run right back to the NBA once the lockout ends. So in approving the deals, FIBA would potentially be giving away valued jobs to players who have no intention of keeping them, diminishing the overseas product for the sake of perhaps a few games with bigger names. The NBA unions belief is that FIBA would not stand in the way of players whose contracts have been suspended because of the lockout seeking employment elsewhere. But FIBA needs a little more time to determine that. A spokesman for the organization said it is working on a statement to be sent to its membership and clubs to clarify the legal situation, which will likely be ready early this week. If FIBA says it will offer letters of clearance, the Williams route becomes available for any other NBA players who want to play, not stay, in Europe. Kobe Bryant, Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade were among the players who reportedly would be open to playing overseas. But dont plan on that exodus just yet. One agent said he "wouldnt be shocked" if FIBA rejects the kind of contract theyd be seeking and wondered if many European teams would even offer them. Of course, its unclear how many teams could even afford to. With the risk of injury that could threaten their NBA earnings, few top players would consider the move without the guarantee of top dollars. And in a weakened European economy that likely rules out the elite Greek clubs, and a history of headaches with certain teams when it comes to actually receiving payment, top talent may not have many places to go. "Theres not a lot of teams over there that could pay the salary of what a rotational NBA player would earn," agent Mark Bartelstein said last week. "I wouldnt say its a vibrant market for NBA rotational-calibre players." While seeing its players getting jobs overseas could potentially threaten owners at the bargaining table, the NBA has shaken off the European challenge before and likely would again. Many American Olympians were asked if they would consider the option in 2008 after Josh Childress left the Atlanta Hawks for Greek club Olympiakos and other lesser players followed, agreeing they would have to listen for a deal that would offer them US$40 million a year, tax free. But NBA commissioner David Stern quickly played down the idea, saying "the system will not support it," and that was before the economy tumbled. So while the Williams deal was interesting, deals for ones like Weems are far more likely. "Thats going to be difficult at best, especially for your A-tier player," Montgomery said. wholesale nfl jerseys . Kennington claims he isnt a road racer, but he keeps proving himself wrong. GREENSBORO, N.C. -- No. 7 Duke proved its anything but a one-man show. These Blue Devils showed they also can win rather easily when they spread the scoring around. Duke routed Elon 86-48 on Tuesday despite not producing a 20-point scorer for the first time this season. Andre Dawkins scored 15 points, Rodney Hood had 13 points and freshman Jabari Parker had 12 points and a season-high-tying 10 rebounds for Duke (11-2). "We didnt know who was scoring," Dawkins said. "We just knew we were putting points up." The Blue Devils never trailed and had little trouble winning their fifth straight, shooting 48.5 per cent, forcing 22 turnovers and turning them into 25 points. "We just wanted to get into their legs," Hood said. "We wanted to contest them, make them take tough shots the whole night and we did that, and I could see the frustration on their face. They got a little tired (and) it was because of our defensive pressure." At least one Blue Devil reached the 20-point mark in each of their previous 12 games -- and in 10 of them, it was Parker. But they had little need to put the scoring burden on any one player in this one. "It was one of those days where everybody played hard and well, and they embraced playing defence," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. Elons 48 points were a season-low allowed by Duke, and at no point in the game did the Phoenix (7-7) have more field goals than turnovers. "We were beaten in every situation," Elon coach Matt Matheny said. Ryley Beaumont and Lucas Troutman scored 11 points each for the Phoenix, who shot 35 per cent and fell to 1-26 against ACC opponents since their 1999 move to Division I. Dawkins set season highs with 20 points and six 3-pointers three days earlier against Eastern Michigan. He finished this one with five 3s -- including four during the first-half run that gave Duke an insurmountable lead. Rasheed Sulaimon and Quinn Cook each had 11 points for the Blue Devils, who can finally focus on conference play. The ACCs preseason favourites visit Notre Dame on Saturday in their league opener.dddddddddddd. Hood -- a 17.6-point scorer -- was 4 of 12 in this one after managing just eight points against Eastern Michigan while playing through an illness. But the Blue Devils didnt need much from him to end a two-game losing streak at the Greensboro Coliseum -- where theyve won seven ACC tournaments under Krzyzewski and in a few months will go for their eighth. Dawkins wasnt around for the last loss -- an 83-74 clunker in the quarterfinals of last years ACC tournament -- because he spent last season away from the team for personal reasons. But he certainly shot better than he did in his last visit here -- Dukes stunning loss to 15th-seeded Lehigh in the 2012 NCAA tournament, in which Dawkins missed seven of his nine attempts. He turned the decisive run in this one into a personal game of around the horn, hitting 3s from the corner, wing and key during the 22-7 run that effectively ended this one at halftime. "When the first one goes in, thats when its kind of, Lets see how far this can go," Dawkins said. "Its easy when youve got teammates that are always looking for you, setting screens for you, things like that. All Ive got to do is catch the ball and shoot it." His 3 from the right corner off an inbounds pass capped the burst and made it 26-9 with 7 1/2 minutes before the break. "Dawkins 3s are daggers," Matheny said. Pointing out the Duke guards knack for swishes, he added: "I dont know if hes even touched the rim." Cook gave Duke its first 20-point lead when his 3 from the corner made it 33-11 with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the half. The Blue Devils then reeled off the first eight points of the second half and went up by 30 on Sulaimons 3 with 11 minutes left. Since making the Division I jump, the Phoenix have yet to finish closer than 22 points against Duke. "They knocked us down," Matheny said, "and we didnt get up quickly enough." ' ' '

TORONTO -- Jeff Niemann was walking around the Tampa Bay Rays clubhouse Tuesday with an assist from the Toronto Raptors. Niemann, the 69" right-hander who fractured his right leg in Mondays win over the Blue Jays, is using a pair of crutches borrowed from the local NBA team. The idea to contact the Raptors for a pair of extra-tall crutches came from Rays athletic trainer Ron Porterfield. The Rays placed Niemann on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and recalled right-hander Josh Lueke from Triple-A Durham. Niemann, 2-3 with a 3.37 ERA in seven starts, is expected to miss four to six weeks after being struck on the right leg by a batted ball in the first inning Monday. He finished the inning and warmed up to start the second before being replaced. Rays manager Joe Maddon said minor league pitchers Alex Cobb and Chris Archer are candidates to be called up when Niemanns turn in the rotation comes up next on Saturday. Lueke appeared in two games for the Rays earlier this season, giving up seven earned runs in 2 1-3 innings. Niemann is the eighth player currently on the disabled list for the Rays, who remain tied with Baltimore for the AL East lead. 18:57ET 15-05-12 wholesale jerseys . -- Jose Bautista hit his third home run of the spring for the Toronto Blue Jays in a 4-3 victory Saturday over the Minnesota Twins, who got three scoreless innings from newcomer Phil Hughes. cheap jerseys .com) - The Calgary Flames are spoilers once again. http://www.salecheapjerseyschina.com/. -- The Oregon Ducks opened the regular season with a 13-game winning streak. cheap nfl jerseys .com) - Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to miss the next two weeks because of a thigh injury. cheap jerseys from china .
