HOUSTON -- Derek Jeter isnt sure who will be around him when the New York Yankees start 2014. Ron Parker Chiefs Jersey . The Houston Astros will be trying to snap a 15-game losing streak when they open the season. New York went into an off-season of uncertainty Sunday with a 5-1 victory over the Astros, whose skid was the longest at the end of the season in more than a century. Mark Reynolds, one of the many players signed this year to fill holes created by injuries, hit a tiebreaking homer in a four-run 14th inning. "There a lot of ifs and questions and whos coming back and whos not coming back," Jeter said. "I have no idea. It would be unfair for me to even speculate." Mariano Rivera didnt pitch in the final game of a career that started in 1995, and Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson were among the players unsure whether they had played their final games for the Yankees, who finished tied for third in the AL East at 85-77, 12 games behind division-winning Boston. Bothered by sore legs, Alex Rodriguez didnt get into the finale. The appeal of his 211-game drug suspension starts Monday. New York finished with its fewest wins in a non-strike season since 1992 and failed to make the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years. Manager Joe Girardis contract is expiring, and he hasnt said whether he wants to come back for a seventh season. "I see it as a year where there are probably more areas to address than there have been in a long time," Girardi said. "So theres a lot to be done in the off-season." Same for the Astros. Houston (51-111) set a team record for defeats and had the most in the majors since Arizona lost the same amount in 2004. The Astros finished with the lengthiest season-ending losing streak since the 1899 Cleveland Spiders dropped their last 16, according to STATS. The Astros 324 losses over three years matched the 1917 Philadelphia Athletics for third most in major league history behind the 1962-64 New York Mets (340) and the 1963-65 Mets (332), according to STATS. Houston had two hits after the first inning and struck out 19 times. The Astros season total of 1,535 set a major league record, six more than the previous mark by Arizona in 2010, and Chris Carter finished with 212 after whiffing three times; only Reynolds (223 in 2009) and Adam Dunn (222 last year) have struck out more. "Its just a big learning experience for everybody," Carter said. "Its tough and tough for everybody around and its frustrating, but whatever it takes for us to get better and be competitive in the future, whatever it takes." Crippled by injuries to Jeter, their captain, along with Rodriguez, Granderson and Mark Teixeira, the Yankees never once put their envisioned starting lineup on the field in the same game. Teixeira was limited to 15 games, Jeter to 17 games, A-Rod to 44 and Granderson to 61. New York used a team-record 56 players. The Yankees put 21 players on the disabled list for a total of 28 stints, causing 1,493 missed days, STATS said. After the Yankees were eliminated from post-season on Wednesday, their final games turned into a tribute for Rivera, the 43-year-old career saves leader, and Andy Pettitte, the 41-year-old left-hander from suburban Deer Park. Rivera decided he wanted Thursday nights emotional Yankee Stadium finale to be his final game. He finished with 652 regular-season saves and apologized for not pitching in Houston this weekend. "Ive been ready for this moment," Rivera said. "Ive been happy with it, and move on." Pettitte went out with a five-hitter on Saturday, his first complete game in seven years, Granderson, who missed much of the season with a broken forearm and then a broken pinkie, hit a tying single in the eighth inning. Like Cano, he is eligible for free agency after the World Series. Cano didnt play Sunday, and the All-Star second baseman finished with a .314 average, 27 homers and 107 RBIs. With reports he is seeking a 10-year deal worth $305 million or more, the Yankees may not re-sign their most productive hitter -- especially if they want to get under next years luxury tax threshold of $189 million. As for the final game, Matt Daley (1-0) got the win. David Robertson, one of the possible replacements at closer for Rivera, pitched a perfect 14th. Reynolds led off the 14th with a homer off Lucas Harrell (6-17), Eduardo Nunez added a two-run double and J.R. Murphy a run-scoring single, giving New York a final three-game sweep in a season notable for failure and farewells. "There were memorable festivities, you know what Im saying?" Jeter said. "Andy and Mo, goes without saying how special that was. But on the field, it wasnt memorable." NOTES: Riveras final game drew a crowd of 40,542 at Minute Maid Park, putting the Astros final attendance at 1,656,443. Thats up slightly from last years total of 1,607,773, the lowest since Houston moved downtown in 2000. It was the second-biggest crowd of the season for Houston after opening day. ... Erik Bedard allowed three hits in seven shutout innings for Houston and struck out nine. Matt Dominguez had an RBI single in the first. Allen Bailey Chiefs Jersey . The Rangers centre left early in Game 1 with an upper body injury after being checked by Canadiens defenceman Mike Weaver and has not played since. Brassard told reporters after practice that he was good to go. That brought a smile to the face of Rangers coach Alain Vigneault. Joe Montana Chiefs Jersey . With just under five seconds remaining - the Raptors having clawed back from a 19-point deficit and pulled within one - DeRozan took the handoff from Chuck Hayes.Aside from a couple of details that still have to be worked out, the Toronto Maple Leafs are very close to locking up captain Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year, $49 million contract extension, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger. Those details, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, are regarding Phaneufs no-movement and no-trade clauses in the language of the new contract. Phaneuf, 28, has been captain of the Maple Leafs for the last four seasons - shortly after being acquired in a trade with the Calgary Flames in 2010. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. In 638 regular season games, the veteran blueliner has 109 goals and 354 points with 849 penalty minutess. Derrick Johnson Chiefs Jersey. Hes played 260 games of those games with Toronto, scoring 34 goals and 126 points. Signing Phaneuf would keep another one of the Maple Leafs key players in the fold for at least the next five seasons. The club signed winger Phil Kessel to an eight-year, $64 million contract extension at the start of the season and re-signed centre Tyler Bozak to a five-year, $21 million last summer. Free agent forward David Clarkson signed a seven-year, $36.75 million contract with the Maple Leafs on July 1, while wingers Joffrey Lupul and James van Riemsdyk are locked up with long-term contracts through the 2017-18 season. Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork. Trumaine McBride Giants Jersey .com) - The Anaheim Ducks have signed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed. Bryzgalov joined the club last week on a professional tryout agreement with a pair of goaltenders injured. Rookie John Gibson remains sidelined with a groin injury he sustained in early November, while Jason LaBarbera suffered a broken bone in his hand in late November and will miss at least the next 2-to-3 weeks. Bryzgalov was not re-signed by the Minnesota Wild during the offseason. The 34-year-old veteran started eight of the Wilds 13 games in last years Stanley Cup playoffs, compiling a 3-6-0 record with a 2.63 goals-against average and one shutout in nine overall postseason outings. The well-traveled goaltender also began last season out of the NHL before signing with Edmonton in November. Bryzgalov was later traded by the Oilers to Minnesota on March 4. Over 32 overall games with the Oilers and Wild last season, Bryzgalov posted a 12-9-8 record with a 2.68 GAA and four shutouts. Bryzgalov originally entered the NHL with the Ducks in 2001 and spent parts of five seasons with Anaheim before being waived in November of 2007. He was the backup goaltender on the Ducks 2006-07 Stanley Cup championship team. In his first NFL draft as the Bills general manager, Whaley struck a deal with the Cleveland Browns to move up five spots to select the Clemson receiver with the fourth pick on Thursday night. To get Watkins, Buffalo gave up its No. 9 pick this year, plus a first- and a fourth-round pick in next years draft. "We thought it was a calculated risk, and a risk we were willing to take," said Whaley, who took over after Buddy Nix stepped down a year ago. "The high cost of not making the playoffs is something we weighed, and we thought this guy was going to get us to the playoffs." The Bills are coming off their third consecutive six-win season. Theyve also gone 14 seasons without a playoff berth -- the NFLs longest active drought. Watkins has the potential of providing the Bills sputtering offence a dynamic threat. And he addresses the objective Whaley outlined in the weeks leading up to the draft: add talent to spur the development of quarterback EJ Manuel, who is coming off an inconsistent and injury-shortened rookie season. "Hes automatically going to make our quarterback better and us better as a team," Whaley said. Manuel expressed his excitement by posting 16 exclamation marks on his Twitter account after Watkins was picked. Buffalo finished last year 19th in total yards gained, and 29th in yards passing. Manuel had his development stunted by three separate knee injuries that led to him missing six regular season and two preseason games. He finished with a 4-6 record with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Watkins, listed at just over 6-feet and 211 pounds, put up eye-popping numbers during his three-year college career. He finished with 240 catches for 3,391 yards and 27 touchdowns in 29 starts, and set 23 school records. Watkins joined Rod Gardner as the only Clemson players to have multiple seasons topping 1,000 yards receiving. And hes the only Tigers player to score more than 10 touchdowns receiving in more than one season. Last year, Watkins had 101 catchees for 1,464 yards and 12 touchdowns. Daniel Fells Giants Jersey. Watkins was so excited to be drafted that he took a picture of himself and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at the draft podium at Radio City Music Hall. And Watkins can fully appreciate the burden of expectation placed on his shoulders in knowing what the Bills traded away to draft him. "That is a lot, but for me, I think I am prepared," he said. "I need to be 100 per cent when I get there. I need to be starting off on the right foot." Watkins is friends with former Clemson running back C.J. Spiller, who was Buffalos first-round pick in the 2010 draft. Now he gets to join Spiller on a team that has been stocking up on young offensive talent, particularly at the receiver position. Buffalo selected Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin with second- and third-round picks last year. The Bills also made a trade with Tampa Bay last month to acquire Mike Williams. Watkins addition raises questions about returning starter Stevie Johnsons future with the team. Whaley declined to address Johnsons status, saying the days focus was about Watkins. The trade with the Browns began developing immediately after Jacksonville selected UCF quarterback Blake Bortles with the No. 3 pick. "We went into this draft saying we were going to be bold, and we made a bold move," Bills President Russ Brandon said. "Were sitting up here very pleased right now." The Bills only have five picks left. Buffalo is next scheduled to pick 41st overall, in the second round set for Friday. Its the first Bills draft since Ralph Wilson -- the teams owner and founder -- died in March. The Bills will be put up for sale, raising concerns the franchise could eventually relocate. Goodell continued to express optimism the Bills will remain in Buffalo in an interview with ESPN about an hour before the draft began. "We want to keep our teams in their current markets," Goodell said. "But in particular, I think the Bills fans have demonstrated their passion and their support for the team." Goodell then reiterated what he said a day earlier, noting a new stadium would help secure the teams long-term future. SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Spurs knew the Philadelphia 76ers were coming in on a long losing streak. Jason McCourty Titans Jersey . They had no intentions of taking it easy on them. Austin Daye had 22 points and Tim Duncan added 19 as the Spurs earned their 14th straight win with a 113-91 victory Monday night that sent the 76ers to their 25th consecutive loss. Philadelphia will face Houston on Thursday with the dubious distinction of being a loss shy of tying the NBA record for consecutive losses set by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010-11. Before the game, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he felt terrible for former assistant Brett Brown, now the 76ers coach. But he added that he did not feel sorry for "one of my best friends," because pity would upset his former protégé. "Obviously, its a rough season for them," Duncan said. "Its a rebuilding season for them. (Brown) knows that, they know that. They have a lot of young guys. Hes just trying to get the system in place that has them playing the way he wants them playing. Its a process. He knows that." Kawhi Leonard and Patty Mills scored 15 points each and Cory Joseph added 12 for San Antonio, which maintained the leagues best record at 54-16. The Spurs did not play starters Tony Parker, Tiago Splitter and Danny Green, but did not need them against the lowly 76ers. Thaddeus Young and Michael Carter-Williams each scored 19 points, Byron Mullens added 15 and Elliot Williams had 14 for Philadelphia (15-56). Daye, who was averaging 2.3 minutes while playing in only four games since being acquired from Toronto on Feb. 20, finished 6-for-10 on 3-pointers and had six rebounds in 29 minutes. It was familiar to Brown, who served as an assistant under Popovich for seven seasons. "Hes lucky," Brown said, "and Ive seen this over so many years — people can come into that system and shine. This system creates opportunities for everybody, and he took advantage of those. The attention you have to give others and the movement that they have in their structure allowed him to get freed up a lot. "He reaped the benefit of playing in that system." The Sixers kept pace early against the Spurs, with Carter-Williams fearlessly driving into the paint for a series of short jumpers and Hollis Thompson hitting a pair of 3s. Popovich called timeout with 3:44 left in the first quarter after Williams dunked over Duncan to tie it at 19. Philadelphias early success awoke the Spurs and brought out the best in Daye. His athleticism and energy were just what San Antonio needed after a listless start. "Hes a skilled guy," Popovich said. "Obviously he can shoot it. But hes also a good passer. He knows how to play the game. It was good to be able to get him some time tonight." San Antonio went on a 26-5 spurt bridging the first and second quarters, capped by a 19-0 run. Daye first ran down Carter-Williams, swatting his layup attempt from behind, leading to Leonards driving layup for a 23-19 lead with 3 minutes left in the opening quarter. Mullens 3-pointer snapped a 6 1/2-minute drought, but the Spurs were up 45-27 with 6:35 left in the first half. Daye then stole an outlet pass on the run, driving directly at a backpedalling Mullens on a 3-on-1 break. Daye faked a behind-the-back pass to Duncan on the left and dished to Joseph on the right, who fed an open Duncan for a layup and a 47-27 lead. "He got an opportunity," Duncan said. "He really stepped up and shot the ball really well. The boy is really long. He made some great plays defensively (and) rebounded the ball. He did a lot of good things out there." The Spurs started Ginobili to give the team another facilitator on the court with Parker out. Ginobili did that and more, scoring seven points and grabbing two rebounds in eight minutes. He drove to the basket for a series of reverse layups, but was blocked by the rim on a one-handed dunk attempt in starting 2 for 3 from the field. San Antonio finished with 31 assists while shooting 56 per cent from the field. "Its tough," Carter-Williams said. "They move the ball really well with the extra pass. They try to move the ball and almost tire you out on defence. You got to be able to rotate and play throughout the shot clock." The victory did little to satiate the Spurs or Popovich, who are hoping to return to the NBA Finals after falling to Miami last season in a heartbreaking seven-game series. "Were playing well through this stretch and winning some games," Duncan said. "Pop is still not satisfied, obviously, with what were doing. We want to stay healthy. We want to stay moving in the right direction. "Hopefully we can ride this into the playoffs and feel good going into the playoffs." NOTES: San Antonios Big Three of Duncan, Ginobili and Parker have played for 39 seasons, which is seven years more experience than the entire Philadelphia roster combined. ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- A three-goal first period started things off right for the St. Johns IceCaps Friday night as they downed the Binghamton Senators 6-2 in American Hockey League action. "I really liked our start," IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said. "I thought we came out and set the tone. We were able to get on the board first and then build off that. It was a strong game against an excellent team." John Albert and Kael Mouillierat each scored two goals to lead St. Johns. McCambridge was happy to get star performances from both forwards, and said he has been impressed with their play of late. "Mouillierat has been a really good offensive piece for us all season long," he said. "Hes a cornerstone on the power play and 5-on-5 hes a solid two-way player that can create offence. And, John Albert has really taken his game to the next level. The speed he comes through the neutral zone with is hard to contain." Mouillierat enjoyed scoring two in front of the home crowd and setting the tone early for the IceCaps. "Its awesome," Mouillierat said. "You always want to contribute. Ive been trying to focus on shooting the puck a little more, lucky enough, a few went in for me tonight." The forward wasnt surprised by the style of game, which featured a lot of quick breaks and a few breakaways. "Last time we played them it was a high-flying game too," he said. "t;They have a lot of firepower over there. Jack Conklin Titans Jersey. We tried to limit their chances and take advantage of ours. Adam Lowry and Eric ODell also scored for the IceCaps (33-19-4). Buddy Robinson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau replied for Binghamton (33-18-4). IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson made 26 saves, while his Binghamton counterpart, Nathan Lawson, stopped 28 shots. Lowry opened the scoring, putting the IceCaps ahead on a backhander five-hole in front of the net at the 5:09 mark of the first period. Albert added to the lead 12:21 into the first, cleaning up a Jason Jaffray rebound on the power play. Thirty seconds later, Mouillierat put the IceCaps up 3-0, finishing off a pass out front, beating Lawson high. Mouillierat added his second of the game with a high wrister 10:18 into the second, from the right faceoff dot on the power play. Albert added his second of the game, stripping a defender of the puck and scoring on a breakaway after a quick backhand-to-forehand move with 31 seconds left in the second period. ODell added insult to injury, scoring a penalty shot with a quick shot to fool Lawson 2:38 into the third. Robinson put the Senators on the scoreboard with a high blocker wristshot at the 7:53 mark of the third. Pageau added another for the Senators, finishing a cross-crease tap-in 10:14 into the third. St. Johns went 2-for-9 on the power play, while the Senators were 1-for-5 with the man advantage. PHILADELPHIA -- Flyers coach Craig Berube wasnt surprised by the way the Philadelphia bounced back on Saturday from a blowout loss because hes seen that type of resilience all season. Atlanta Falcons Store . Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist to lead Philadelphia to a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers. Vincent Lecvalier, Sean Couturier and Luke Schenn also scored for Philadelphia, which rebounded from a 7-3 home defeat to San Jose on Thursday. Chris Kreider and Derick Brassard scored for the Rangers, who lost for just the second time in their past nine games. Philadelphia came out with an edge in the first period following Thursdays loss that Berube called "embarrassing." The Flyers improved to 4-0-1 this season following games in which theyve been beaten by four or more goals. "I think our guys have good character," Berube said. "I was pretty confident wed come out and play hard." Unlike Thursday against the Sharks, Berube liked what he saw on Saturday versus the Rangers. "Theyre a fast, hard-working team and if you want to compete with them you need to play a fast, hard game," he said. The opening 20 minutes featured physical play by both sides, including big hits from Philadelphias Zac Rinaldo on Daniel Carcillo and New Yorks Derek Stepan on Steve Downie, among others. The teams lingered on the ice for several minutes after the first-period horn, with the Rangers seemingly upset by a check from Brayden Schenn in front of New Yorks bench late in the period. The Flyers scored twice in the opening period, with the goals coming 1:06 apart. Lecavalier opened the scoring at 7:04 on a goal that went off Rangers defenceman Anton Stralman. "Thats huge," Lecavalier said. "You want to get that first goal and we got that." Brayden Schenn first was credited with the goal, but it was changed in between periods. Couturier followed with his 10th goal of the season at 8:10, beautifully deking past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist and roofing the puck with a forehand shot into an empty net from a difficult angle. It looked as if the Rangers cut the deficit in half early in the second period, but Benoit Pouliots apparent tally was waved off because Pouliot deflected the puck past Flyers goalie Steve Mason with a high stick. Mason finished with 33 saves. Mason was pulled in Thursdays defeat to San Jose, and he was happy to bounce back with a victory. The fact that he outdueled one of the games premier goalies was secondary. "It feels good," Mason said. "But I wasnt going out there (thinking) Steve Mason versus Henrik Lundqvist. I was trying to help the Flyers beat the Rangers, and thats what we did." New York got on the board a few minutes later when Kreider tipped Rick Nashs pass past Mason and just inside the post from close range. After Kreider missed a great chance to tie the game when his backhanded attempt at an empty net went wide with 10 minutes left in the period, Brassards power-play goal at 11:42 of the second tied the game at 2. Brassards slap shot from the slot after a perfect pass from Brad Richards went off Masons pads and through his legs. Simmonds beat Lundqvist through the legs on a forehand shot from a tough angle on the power play at 13:23 to put Philadelphia back in front 3-2. "I read a high shot and he went five-hole," Lundqvist said. "I thought I was patient on the shot; he just beat me. I thought overall we played a really good game and created a lot of good chances. Disappointing, obviously, but I thought we did a lot of good things." Philadelphia had an apparent goal waved off 3 1/2 minutes into the third period when the officials ruled that Lundqvist had covered the puck even though it trickled into the goal. Mason kept the Flyers in front with a strong, sprawling pad save on Stepan from just in front of the crease with 10 minutes left. Luke Schenn provided an insurance goal with 3:45 left, beating Lundqvist with a wrister from the slot. Lundqvist, who didnt start the Rangers first game following the Olympic break after helping Sweden earn the silver medal in Sochi, finished with 27 saves. He entered the Olympic break having won his last five starts. In his last 14 games against Philadelphia entering Saturday, Lundqvist was 12-2-0 with a 1.77 GAA. Philadelphia defenceman Kimmo Timonen returned to the lineup after sitting out Thursdays 7-3 loss to San Jose to rest after returning from Sochi and had two assists. Timonen helped Finland to the bronze medal. Philadelphia won for the fourth time in the past 16 meetings with the Rangers. NOTES: Rangers RW Derek Dorsett returned to the lineup for the first time since breaking his fibula on Jan. 3. ... New York centre Mats Zuccarello missed his second straight game after fracturing his left hand in the Olympics. ... Flyers backup goalie Ray Emery (lower body injury) wasnt available. Cal Heeter, who never has played in an NHL game, was called up from the AHLs Adirondack Phantoms to back up Mason. Emery was injured in Thursdays loss to the Sharks after he replaced Mason in the second period. Berube said afterward that Emery wouldnt make the trip to Washington for Sundays game, and the coach declined to name his starting goalie for the matchup. Devin Hester Falcons Jersey . We need to create habits that are going to make us successful in April, the sophomore guard tells the Wildcats. April? The only two games played in April are the ones that decide the national championship. The Wildcats have grandiose ambitions and closed out their latest win with a ferocious 6-minute stretch that showed why they are legitimate NCAA championship contenders. JayVaughn Pinkston had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Darrun Hilliard scored 23 points, keeping No. 7 Villanova undefeated with an 82-77 overtime win over Syracuse on Saturday. The Wildcats (11-0) never led until overtime and rallied from a 15-point hole to beat their former Big East rival. Hart hit a 3-pointer and Pinkston tied the score 69-all with 4.2 seconds left in regulation on a basket off a turnover. Hilliards two free throws 57 seconds into OT gave Villanova its first lead of the game 71-69. He was kicked in the face during a scrum and was on the bench when Daniel Ochefu made two free throws that pushed the lead to 74-71. Hilliard was tested for a concussion and not allowed back in the game. Pinkston scored a late bucket, then added a monster block that preserved the lead with 15 seconds left. Hart added 21 points in the most gutty win of the season for the Wildcats. Wed like to come in and win by 15, 20 every game, but its not going to happen, Hart said. We need these kind of games to prepare us for conference, prepare us for April. Rakeem Christmas and Michael Gbinije each scored 18 points for Syracuse (6-4). The Orange never trailed in regulation and the Wildcats could only get as close as one point late in the second half. Pinkstons three-point play with 1:14 left cut the lead to 63-62. Christmas followed with a three-point play off a goaltending call that stretched the lead to four and had the Orange in position to play spoiler for the second straight season -- Villanova was 11-0 last season when it lost at Syracuse. But Pinkston and Hilliard did enough down the stretch against an Orange team that was in foul trouble all game. The Orange had seven players with at least three fouls and three fouled out. The Wildcats were 26 of 32 from the free-throw line; Syracuse 13 of 18. Pinkston wwas clutch in the final minutes of regulation/OT, just as he was in a win last month against Michigan when he had the go-ahead basket and game-saving block in the final minute of a 60-55 victory. Jalen Collins Falcons Jersey. . The Orange scored with ease in the first half against a Wildcats defence that failed to make any consistent stops. Gbinije and Trevor Cooney hit consecutive 3s for an 11-point lead. The Wildcats scored six points in 37 seconds to make it a 10-point game, but it was just a blip in an otherwise dismal half. We didnt come into the game with the focus that we should have, coach Jay Wright said. But, over a season, thats going to happen some games. Cooney, who scored 17 points, steadied the Orange with his third 3-pointer of the first half and helped them earn a 43-31 halftime lead. Syracuse just got by Louisiana Tech 71-69 on Sunday, leaving coach Jim Boeheim wondering about his team. While the Wildcats have their aim on March Madness, Boeheim refused to think about the NCAA tournament. Im not worried about that, he said. Im not even thinking about that. Im thinking about playing Colgate. March is a long ways away. TIP-INS Syracuse: Christmas is a Philly native and played for Academy of the New Church. ... The Orange have four nonconference losses for just the second time in Boeheims tenure, and hes in his 39th season. ... Kaleb Joseph had 10 points and 10 assists in 45 minutes. Villanova: The Wildcats trailed at halftime for the third time this season. They had not allowed more than 30 points in the first half this season. ... Hart left the game in the first half with a bloody nose and returned wearing a nameless No. 44 jersey instead of No. 3. He had gauze stuffed inside his nostrils. He made all three shots in the first half and scored 11 points. ... Villanova missed 7 of 8 3s in the first half. RIVALY RENEWED Syracuse and Villanova continued their home-and-home rivalry even though the Orange have played the last two seasons in the ACC. Always one of the hottest basketball tickets in town, 18,369 fans packed the Wells Fargo Center. The teams arent scheduled to play each other next season, though the possibility still remains of a matchup down the road. When Villanova plays someone else here, theyre not going to get 18,000, Boeheim said. UP NEXT Syracuse hosts Colgate on Monday. Villanova hosts NJIT on Tuesday. Sam Dekker added 13 points and Nigel Hayes scored nine -- all over the final 20 minutes -- for the Badgers (12-1), who overcame a sluggish first half to post their fifth straight win. The guys found ways to get it done, Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said. Wisconsin hosts Penn State in their Big Ten opener on Wednesday. Justin Moss led a balanced attack with 14 points and 12 rebounds as Buffalo (7-3) saw its three-game win streak come to an end. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork. Mitchell Schwartz Chiefs Jersey .com) - The New York Islanders sauntered into Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night to face the rival New York Rangers with a collective swagger not seen in almost three decades. That they walked out of the venerable building attached to Penn Station with a 3-0 victory to cap a seven-game cross-country road trip really doesnt matter. Jack Capuanos club stood toe-to-toe with one of the hottest clubs in the National Hockey League, in what was probably the most meaningful game between both bitter rivals since Game 5 of the 1984 Patrick Division Semifinals, and look to remain affixed at the forefront of the battle for the Metropolitan Division crown for the remainder of the schedule. Winning was just the icing on the cake. Our focus and attitude is all about how we prepare, Capuano told the New York Times after finishing the road swing an impressive 5-2-0. Its all about character and accountability. This was a big game with a lot of media attention, and I thought we played well. We have a lot of hockey left. It started and ended with goaltending. Henrik Lundqvist withered at a key time under a 44-shot barrage. Jaroslav Halak, on the other hand, stopped 27 shots to record his sixth shutout of the season and post his 23rd victory this year, in the process becoming just the second Islanders crease guardian to blank the Rangers in Manhattan and the fifth in franchise history to hold their older brothers off the scoreboard. Venerable troublemaker Billy Smith had been the first and only to record a whitewash on the road, turning the trick way back on Dec. 17, 1975, a 26-save effort which fueled a 3-0 win. In between, Mark Fitzpatrick, Tommy Soderstrom and Rick DiPietro also blanked the Rangers in the comfort of Nassau Coliseum. In the middle happened to be a three-goal second period which provided Halak all the offense he needed. The goals came from an American collegian (Anders Lee of Notre Dame), a Russian who plied his trade in the KHL before coming to North America (Nikolay Kulemin) and a Dane who arrived in the NHL via his native Scandinavia (Frans Nielsen). I think it was just being a little bit more sure of ourselves, no hesitation, Islanders captain John Tavares said. We went out in the second and you could see us just getting our game going and starting to wear them down, making them have to defend. Eventually we got rewarded. Certainly its going to make a lot of people on Long Island happy [Wednesday] morning. Were excited about beating them. With Tavares and Kyle Okposo shut down, the balance in scoring came to the forefront. The Islanders currently boast 16 players who have recorded at least 10 points so far. All of that kept the Orange and Blue one point up on Pittsburgh for the division lead, leap-frogged the club over the Lightning into first place in the Eastern Conference, and might have finally erased any lingering notions of an eventual second-half nose dive. Oh yeah, and the Islanders could be the first team in the East to 30 wins if they are on the correct side of the scoreboard again, in Fridays showdown with the Pens at Uniondale. Its far and away a season beyond all expectations for a club some pundits picked to only make the playoffs, and its a wildly successful one already for a team poised to bid farewell to the place it has called home for the last 42 years. At the midway point of 2014-15, the team once ridiculed for their Etch-a- Sketch coaching and GM rotations along with their now retro-cool Gortons Fisherman logo, has vaulted into the level of the all-time greats. New York hit the halfway mark tied with Tampa Bay -- the Atlantic Division leaders -- with the most wins in the Eastern Conference at 27. Their 27-13-1 record stands as the franchises second-best mark at the middle of any season with only the 1978-79 Patrick Division and Clarence Campbell Bowl winners ranking higher at 28 victories, and their 55 points marks the most accumulated since the 1981-82 squad under Al Arbour collected the same amount. Their opponents, the Broadway Blueshirts, were no slouches, either. Heading into the opening faceoff, Alain Vigneaults charges were riding a 13-1-0 streak, their best run of success since going unbeaten in 15 games (14-0-1) during the middle portion of the 1972-73 campaign, and one which vaulted them from the dregs of the division into prime playoff positioning, a full 11 points ahead of idle Philadelphia. In the end, the Islanders laid waste to any outcome as a result of that momentum, winning for the fifth time in their last six trips to the Worlds Most Famous Arena -- a string of success not found in the Islander history books since February of 2000 through November of 2002. A team once best known for its prowess in the playoffs beyond regulation has a bright young hero doing the same thing in the regular season. Tavares picked up his seventh career OT marker in last Friday nights 3-2 win against the Devils in Newark, extending his franchise record. Even though a five-minute extra session was only implemented league-wide at the end of the clubs dynastic run in 1983, thats something that Messrs. Bossy, Trottier, Gillies, Sutter, Goring, Potvin, Tonelli or Nystrom never came close to achieving during their distinguished careers. The Islanders march toward a franchise-record in victories (54, 1981-82) has been aided by an incredible 11-1 record so far in games decided beyond the first 60 minutes of play. Thats certainly worthy of confidence, to know you can outlast an opponent before sending them home unhappy. Both New York franchises renew hostilities three more times before the end of the regular season: Jan. 27, Feb. 16 and Mar. 10, all on Long Island. Even if the Rangers took a number and are able to recall how the Islanders beat them at home twice and by a combined 9-3 count already, will it matter? Capuanos kids are 15-9-1 on the road but are an equally-impressive 14-4-0 on home ice. Only Tampa (16) and Toronto (15) have produced more positive results in their respective arenas among fellow conference clubs. There will be garment rending and gnashing of teeth by die-hards once the Islanders leave the comfort of the Mausoleum and the suburbs for the flash of the Barclays Center and the lure of street cred in Brooklyn at the end of the season. Until then, the Islanders seem bent on giving their fans one last shot at puffing out their collective chests to claim local bragging rights which were theirs for a solid decade from the mid 1970s through the mid 1980s -- a feeling which is long overdue both on and off the ice. Donald Stephenson Chiefs Jersey . The Ballon dOr tends to go to a player who has performed exceptionally well at the World Cup, someone who won it, said The Frenchman. He added: So this year it should be for a Germany player. It was always that way until 2010 when Leo Messi won despite having a fairly average World Cup, so nothing is for certain. Platini is a man who has a right to live in the past. After all, his greatest successes, as a player, occurred there. The problem with living in the past, however, is that you lose sight of what happens in the present. In Platinis case, it seems, this includes the recent past as he adds fuel to the flames around the myth of Messis average 2010 World Cup. We should not cast too much of a judgment on the 59-year-olds memory of South Africa 2010, as there is a more significant point to be made here, although for someone who puts so much onus on that tournament you would expect more. Yet therein lies the real problem. Platini only spoke about this issue for less than 90 seconds this week but already got himself in a muddle. He went on to use examples of past winners of the award in World Cup years, such as Igor Belanov in 1986 because he had a good World Cup. So, to clarify, its not just someone who wins it then, Michel? Of course the award, then, was only eligible for European players, which is why Diego Maradona didnt win it. Messi, of course, in a year when he is now eligible, was named the best player at this years World Cup. This all just weakens Platinis argument even more. As UEFA President the last thing he should be doing is using history as a guide to dictate what should happen in the future around an award that is completely different than in the past. Some feel he wants to generate interest in the award by steering the process away from the inevitable, a battle between the games best two players, by some margin, Ronaldo and Messi. A similar campaign happened last year when the media portion of the vote incredibly awarded more first place votes for Bayern Munich midfielder, Franck Ribery. Platinis ideas, though, are archaic and shine a spotlight on an area of the game where identifying the reliance of individual quality is much more difficult. It is one thing to put the onus on the award based on the World Cup if the club game was significantly behind international football. Yet, as this week as shown, it is the exact opposite in terms of overall quality and entertainment. It has been an interesting few weeks for club against country debates. Raheem Sterlings tiredness, Diego Costas hamstring and Don Garber vs Jurgen Klinsmann have been some notable chapters that needed to be told. The World Cup in Brazil was, undoubtedly, a marvellous month of football, with Germany coming out worthy winners of arguably one of the finest World Cups of all time. Yet, since, the international game has been rapidly forced back on us as nothing more than a distraction of annoyance. Yes, sure, there has been some surprising results at the start of qualifying for a tournament in two years time, but the club game has been left disjointed; frustrated by two large, less than meaningful, international windows before thhe middle of October full of many games that were nothing more than all-star exhibition games. Allen Bailey Chiefs Jersey. Club football was finally pushed back on stage this past week and responded with a bang, highlighting the true top level that the worlds greatest players can reach. Watching the likes of Messi and Ronaldo attempt to reach their peak while playing for their countries is an exhausting exercise. Playing with club teammates they simply generate the relationships they need each week to excel. The international game does not give them this opportunity. Yet, the popularity of the World Cup, coupled with comments such as Platinis, make people believe that the elite should be at their best when, in fact, the odds are severely stacked against them. It is little wonder countries like Germany and Spain, which specializes in a team philosophy over individual brilliance, has excelled in recent years. To appreciate the true world class brilliance of the likes of Messi and Ronaldo is to watch them each week for Barcelona and Real Madrid and, in particular, when they grace us with their talents in the Champions League as they did this week. Ronaldos finish at Anfield, from a subtle pass by James Rodriguez, simply couldnt happen for Portugal. It was a sensational goal born out of a combination of true understanding and quality. The same could be said for Messis goal against Ajax on Tuesday when he ran into space and anticipated a pass that only a true visionary could pull off. Thankfully, for Messi, Andres Iniesta was the maestro who delivered the ball. For Argentina, it would have simply been a run no one else would have seen. It is the Champions League where such brilliance is highlighted, a tournament that, remarkably, some had the knives out for this week. As followers of the sport we can be a fickle bunch. Tuesdays games returned scorelines of 6-0, 0-7 and 1-7, which prompted many to question the competitiveness of the entire tournament. What a great pity. We can be guilty of not appreciating things that happen in the immediate. Just ask Platini. Twenty years ago this week the first legs of the last 16 of the European Cup took place. Reigning Ballon DOr winner Platini and his Juventus took on Grasshoppers of Zurich over two legs. Lyngby of Denmark, Beveren of Belgium and Linfield of Northern Ireland were amongst the teams in the last 16 of club footballs elite competition. Platini would go on to win the European Cup that year, playing just nine games, most of which were vastly inferior to the Italian champions. It would be the World Cup that would provide the only showcase for the best players to meet. Things have changed dramatically since. As consumers of a sport we love, we crave greatness. That it happens infrequently makes it more special. What the likes of Bayern Munich, Ronaldo and Messi continue to do on the biggest club stage of all should not be discounted because its not in a tournament called the World Cup. As guardians of history we have a responsibility to future generations to tell stories of greatness and, thanks to the Champions League, we are crucial witnesses to this far more often than those who knew Platini more as a player than the leader of a governing body who is simply out of touch when searching for where the best of the best perform. UCLA failed to advance to the winners side of the bracket in the quarterfinals by suffering a 75-65 loss at the hands of Oklahoma and then had another disappointing setback on Thursday in a nationally-ranked showdown with North Carolina, 78-56. It was the first two losses of the season for the Bruins, who are 4-2. UAB was outmatched in both of its matchups in this event, falling to the seventh-place game after losing to Wisconsin (72-43) and Florida (56-47). The Blazers are off to a sluggish start this season at just 2-4. The Bruins and the Blazers have never before squared off on the hardwood. Although the Bruins played tight with UNC for most of the first half of their latest game, the Tar Heels finished the first half on an 18-4 run to go into intermission up by double digits and the Bruins never sniffed the lead in the second stanza. They shot only 38.6 percent from the field, which included a dreadful 1-of-14 showing from 3-point range, and they were also plagued by 23 turnovers. Norman Powell paced the losing effort with 15 points, while Kevon Looney and Bryce Alford netted 11 and 10 points, respectively. Two poor showings in this event hasnt been able to completely spoil UCLAs impressive offensive numbers this season, as it shoot 46 percent from the field for 83.7 ppg, which is moore than good enough to support a modest scoring defense (73. Jarvis Landry Dolphins Jersey. 2 ppg). Alford (18.2 ppg) and Powell (18.0 ppg) are one of the best one-two scoring punches in the nation, with the duo combining to shoot 26-of-67 from 3-point range. Alford also gets his teammates involved with 7.3 apg and Powell is a great perimeter defender with nearly three steals per game. Rounding out the outstanding starting five are Looney (14.3 ppg, 11.5 rpg), Tony Parker (11.7 ppg) and Isaac Hamilton (10.0 ppg). The Blazers put forth a great effort against Florida on Thursday, even holding a two-point lead with under four minutes to play, but they faltered down the stretch by allowing the Gators to score the final 11 points of the game. Their defensive effort was spectacular, as they held Florida to a mere 34 percent field goal shooting, but unfortunately they could not take advantage with a modest 42.2 percent showing (including 4-of-14 from 3-point range) to go with a game-high 16 turnovers. Tosin Mehinti and Robert Brown were the only players to score in double figures with 12 points apiece. UAB has established a similar theme this season, as its lackluster offensive attack (.402 FG percentage, 63.0 ppg) isnt quite good enough to support a stellar defense (.439, 67.7). Brown (11.3 ppg) and C.J. Washington (9.3 ppg) are the leading scorers but neither shoots greater than 36 percent from the field. Tyler Madison (9.3 ppg), Mehinti (8.8 ppg) and Hakeem Baxter (8.0 ppg) have also been solid. DALLAS -- Taj Gibson didnt worry when Chicago fell behind Dallas early, and he wasnt concerned when the Mavericks made a late run for the lead. Custom Los Angeles Rams Jersey . The Bulls had answers both times. Gibson scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, Mike Dunleavy hit a go-ahead 3-pointer and Chicago overtook the Mavericks in the fourth quarter of a 100-91 victory Friday night. "Were used to this," Gibson said after the Bulls (32-26) won for the eighth time in nine games, moved a season-high six over .500 and answered a 22-point home loss to Dallas in December. "We get knocked down and we keep coming back." The Mavericks led by 16 in the first half and had erased a six-point Chicago edge with a 7-0 run punctuated by Monta Ellis second steal and breakaway dunk of the night when Dunleavy put the Bulls back in front and started a 10-0 run with a 3-pointer for an 87-85 lead. Jimmy Butler had 19 points, seven rebounds and a big block during the decisive spurt, and Kirk Hinrich scored 17. Dunleavy finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, shooting 4 of 7 from long range. Ellis scored 20 to the lead the Mavericks, who were trying to match their season high with a fifth straight win. Dirk Nowitzki and Vince Carter had 15 apiece, but Carter scored just one point in the second half and was held to 0-of-6 shooting in the fourth quarter, when the Mavericks went 6 for 25 from the field. "Some nights teams miss shots and you have to hang in with grit, guts, defence and rebounding," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "Weird thing about it was we were in front most of the first half and we let them climb back into it with grit, guts and rebounding." Gibson, who had 16 points in the first half, followed Dunleavys go-ahead 3 with a dunk on an assist from Joakim Noah, who then blocked a shot by Sam Dalembert on the other end right after committing his fifth foul. Butler scored inside after Ellis fell down, and after two more Dallas possessions ended in misses, Hinrich hit a pull-up jumper for a 93-85 lead. Butler blocked a layup try by Jose Calderon and made a free throw at the other end to complete the run as the Bulls outscored the Mavericks 27-15 in the fourth. "We got nothing but good looks," said Ellis, who was 2 of 6 in the fourth and 7 of 19 for the game. "We missed a lot of layups, a lot of shots in the middle, at the free throw line. Missed a lot of wide-open ones. Just werent going down for us." After the Bulls went up 84-78 on back-to-back 3-pointers from D.J. Augustin and Hinrich, the Mavericks went back in front with a 7-0 run started when Nowitzki hit a one-legged fadeaway over Noah after Noah had stolen the ball from him two straight times. Noah didnt have a point or rebound in the first half but finished with 10 points and nine boards. The teams assist leader had four more of those as the NBAs lowest-scoring team reached 100 points for the third straight game -- all wins. "We are an offensive juggernaut," coach Tom Thibodeau said with a smile. "I thought we battled back and showed more discipline as the game went along." The Bulls took their first lead on a reverse layup by Carlos Boozer with 2:48 left in the third quarter, but didnt score the rest of the period. Shawn Marion quickly answered with a layup, and DeJuan Blair ended a 2 1/2-minute scoreless stretch with a bucket to put Dallas up 76-73 going into the fourth. The Mavericks made five of their first seven from long range and ran out to a 32-17 late in the first quarter, punctuated by a sprinting layup from Wayne Ellington when he was led perfectly on a long pass from Devin Harris. The Bulls got within six in the second quarter before Dallas pushed the lead back to 51-38 on a dunk by Ellis after the 1,000th steal of his career. Chicago rallied again to get within two on a 13-2 run that included 3-pointers from Dunleavy, Hinrich and Butler. NOTES: The Mavericks recalled F Jae Crowder, G Shane Larkin and C Bernard James after a one-game stint with their NBA Development League team. Crowder had a triple-double for the Texas Legends in suburban Frisco with 23 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists. James had 38 points and 10 rebounds. G Ricky Ledo was sent back down to the Legends. ... In addition to the steals milestone, Ellis hit the 500th 3-pointer of his career in the first quarter. The Miami Dolphins may be without running back Knowshon Moreno for the entire preseason as he continues to recover from arthroscopic surgery. I really dont even know. I just want to take each day one at a time. They have a schedule for me and theyre just going to tell me every day what I have to do, and I just go out there and do it." Moreno was initially scheduled to miss four to five weeks, however he is now into his sixth week of recovery and remains on the physically unable to perform list. Moreno was signed in the offseason by the Dolphins, after reaching the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos in 2013. BALTIMORE -- Even though the Boston Red Sox insist that theyve turned the page from last year, their first win of the season was eerily reminiscent of 2013. Golden Tate III Lions Jersey . David Ortiz and Mike Napoli homered, John Lackey threw six sharp innings and Boston ruined the Baltimore debut of Ubaldo Jimenez with a 6-2 victory Wednesday night. Dustin Pedroia had four hits for the defending World Series champion Red Sox, now 1-1 after losing to Baltimore on opening day. "Dustin, David and Mike. Thats three of the better hitters in the league," said Boston manager John Farrell, who rode the trio to 97 wins during the 2013 regular season. Lackey (1-0) looked even sharper than he did last year, when he had a 3.52 ERA in 29 starts. In this one, the right-hander allowed two runs and three hits before handing the ball to the bullpen, which finished with three scoreless innings. "I just threw country hard balls the first few innings, then was able to mix in other pitches later on," Lackey said. "I was very pleased for the first time. It felt pretty good. Its something I can keep building on." Lackey said he made "one mistake" -- an 0-2 pitch that Nelson Cruz hit over the right field wall for his second homer in two games. But the Orioles did little else right against Lackey, who walked one and struck out six in improving to 14-5 lifetime against Baltimore. "He had command and he was throwing strikes and he was working fast," Orioles catcher Matt Wieters said. "It seemed like it was the fourth or fifth inning before we really started to see some pitches over the middle of the plate. Youve got to tip your hat to him. When he can locate like that with his kind of stuff, youre going to have success." Ortiz connected in the third inning and Napoli made it 4-2 with a two-run shot in the fifth. Both homers came off Jimenez (0-1), who signed a four-year contract with the Orioles in February after winning 13 games with Cleveland last year. "The one to David, that was a good pitch," Jimenez said. "It seems like he was looking for that pitch and he hit it good. But the one to Napoli, I would definitely like to have that back. Oh-and-2, big mistake. I was trying to go away and left it right down the middle." Jimenez allowed four runs, five hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out six in his lamentable Orioles debut. "You always want to win. But it is part of the game," he said. "Thats how it goes. I still have 30 more games to go. I have to get ready for my next one." Ortiz put the Red Sox up 2-0 in the third inning with a drive to right following a single by Pedroia. Ortiz was 0 for 7 lifetime against Jimenez before connecting. "The pitch to Ortiz wasnt a bad pitch," Wieters said. "He was probably looking for something in and he got it and he didnt miss it. Youve got to give him credit." Lackey gave up a leadoff single to Nick Markakis, then retired 11 straight before Chris Davis walked with two outs in the fourth. Cruz followed with an opposite-field drive to right on an 0-2 pitch. Signed as a free agent in February, Cruz has accounted for all of Baltimores four runs this season -- three RBIs and a run scored. In the fifth, Jimenez hit Daniel Nava with a pitch and Napoli homered on an 0-2 count. Boston pulled away in the seventh against Ryan Webb. After two singles and an intentional walk to Ortiz loaded the bases, Napoli lined a two-run single to left. Napoli had a major league-leading 31 RBIs last year with the bases loaded. And this year, nothings changed. "In that situation, youve got one out and the bases loaded, so Im just trying to hit a flyball to get the run in," Napoli said. "I just happened to get a base hit, so thats extra. Its nice to come through in those situations." NOTES: Thursday nights series finale features a duel of left-handers: Bostons Felix Doubront against Wei-Yin Chen. ... Baltimore LHP Johan Santana, seeking to rebound from shoulder surgery, threw 30 pitches off a full mound Wednesday in Florida. "Its encouraging to see that Johans throwing all his pitches," manager Buck Showalter said. ... David Lough went 0 for 4 and Steve Lombardozzi went 1 for 3 in their Orioles debut. ... Lackey has gone at least five innings in 23 of 24 starts against Baltimore. Tim Wright Lions Jersey . -- The Sacramento Kings have signed first-round pick Nik Stauskas to his rookie contract. Tahir Whitehead Lions Jersey . LOUIS - The St. DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Brandon Morrow allowed five runs and six hits over three innings in the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 loss Wednesday to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Morrow was making his second appearance since a season-ending forearm injury last May. On Feb. 28, the right-hander gave up two hits and one run in two relief innings. "The important thing, I felt good again," Morrow said. "Forearm is feeling really good. I felt loose again. I felt good with my breaking stuff. Fastball command kind of put me in a hole a couple times." Morrow struck out two, walked one, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. "Hes big," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "In a lot of ways hes probably the most important guy, because we expected a lot out of him last year. Hes got as good an arm as anybody. When hes on, when hes healthy, hes been a good big league pitcher. If he can fill that void, bounce back and have a full season out there where he doesnt go on the DL and you get his 30-plus starts, that will be big for us." Travis Snider had a first-inning RBI single and a two-run homer in the third off Morrow. Snider spent time on the disabled list last season with a left big toe injury. "Travis worked extremely hard this winter," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "Hes moving so much better. Now thats he healthy and physically ready to go, well see where he can take us." Edwin Encarnacion had a two-run double for the Blue Jays. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Mark Buehrle will go against Pitttsburghs Gerrit Cole when the two teams play again Thursday in Bradenton. Michael Burton Lions Jersey. Pirates: Jeff Locke was scratched from his start because of right side tightness. The Pirates believe the injury is a minor one. Locke gave up one hit in two scoreless innings last Thursday against the New York Yankees. The left-hander won eight straight starts in the first half of last season and made the NL All-Star team. But, he went 2-5 with a 6.12 ERA over his final 12 starts and was shut down in September. Jay Jackson, who filled in for Locke, gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. The 26-year old right-hander, signed to a minor league contract in December, pitched at Double-A and Triple-A for Miami last year. Pittsburgh starters have not allowed an earned run in five consecutive games, a span of 10 innings. TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Closer Casey Janssen, out with a sore right shoulder, played catch for the second straight day. Outfielder Colby Rasmus sat out his fourth consecutive game due to a stiff neck. REASSIGNMENTS The Blue Jays sent right-hander Tomo Ohka, left-hander Juan Perez, and catchers Derrick Chung and Jack Murphy to their minor league camp this week. Ohka, who last pitched in the major leagues in 2009, agreed to a minor league contract with the Blue Jays in December. The 37-year-old was 51-68 for Boston (1999-01), Montreal (2001-04), Washington (2005), Milwaukee (2005-06), Toronto (2007) and Cleveland (2009). ST. Jamize Olawale Jersey . LOUIS -- After the morning skate, captain Jamie Benn vowed that the Dallas Stars would play to honour ill teammate Rich Peverley. With the forward following the Stars game against the St. Louis Blues from a hospital bed back in Dallas, Benn put his team over the top. Stars coach Lindy Ruff said Peverley, who is sidelined because of a heart issue that caused him to collapse on the bench on Monday, was well aware his teammates beat the Blues 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday night. "I texted him right after the game and he responded," Ruff said. "He was happy. He said Keep rolling. I just said at the end, See you tomorrow." Benn scored 3:42 into overtime to end the Blues five-game winning streak. St. Louis is first overall in the NHL standings. "Obviously, (Monday) night was a scary situation but today is a new day," Benn said. "We were thinking about Rich back home, but I thought we did a great job getting mentally ready for this game. "Were still in a big playoff push and we found a way to get two points." Defencemen Alex Pietrangelo and Roman Polak ended lengthy goal droughts for the Blues, who lost for the first time in five games with new goalie Ryan Miller. They might have run into an inspired team. "Youve got to give them credit. Theyve been through a lot in the last 24 hours," Blues forward Steve Ott said. "Its pretty honourable for them to come out and play like that." Colton Sceviour, one of two call-ups by the Stars with Peverley out indefinitely and teammate Alex Chiasson also hospitalized due to emotional distress after his teammates "cardiac event," scored on a power play in the first period. Miller robbed the other call-up, Chris Mueller, with a glove save from point-blank range with 2:16 to go in the third. But he couldnt cross the crease in time to corral a shot from the right circle by Benn that gave Dallas its fourth win in five games. "I kind of knew he got lost up there, but no one was on the back side the way the play developed," Miller said. "I just didnt get my whole body over in time." The Stars home game against Columbus was postponed Monday night after Peverley fell ill. Peverley remained hospitalized in stable condition on Tuesday while undergoing tests. "I told them, You can look for a reason to lose or you can find a way to win," Ruff said. "I said we need to find a way to win and we need to win it for a couple of our teammates." Benn has scored in three straight games and has seven points in a five-game streak. The Blues are 18-0-2 against the Central Division, breaking the franchise record of 19 consecutive games with a point in divisional play set in 1968-69. During the five-game winning streak, they never allowed more than two goals. After settling for one point, coach Ken Hitchcock saw only negatives. "I dont think were playing very smart," Hitchcock said. "Were not putting pucks in deep, were not getting on the grind, were turning way too many pucks over. "Players are going to have to dig in and start playing the right way." Polak tied it at 2 at 5:01 of the third period with his first goal in 37 games and fourth overall. He sent a drive through traffic that got past goalie Tim Thomas. Pietrangelo, who earlier this season became the first Blues defenceman to score 40 points in his first three seasons, snapped a 20-game goal drought in the first period. Pietrangelo had 11 assists since his previous goal on Jan. 10 at Vancouver. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, In the first period of Mondays Canucks-Kings game, Tom Sestito of Vancouver was assessed a five-minute penalty for fighting, a two-minute penalty for instigating and a 10-minute and game misconduct for repeatedly punching unwilling combatant Jordan Nolan. Im a Canucks fan, but Im disgusted by these one-sided attacks and think it was the right call. Nevertheless, I was surprised that the five-minute penalty was called "fighting," as "fighting" penalties are usually given to both players involved in the fight! How come the one player fighting major isnt called for other one-sided attacks like the infamous Emery on Holtby incident on Nov. 1? In your response to that debacle you rightly emphasized the importance of referees separating the players quickly, but didnt mention they could assess a five-minute fighting penalty to one player only! Ryan McCormick,Vancouver, BC Ryan: As you pointed out, the correct penalties were assessed to Tom Sestito in his one-sided altercation/attack against Jordan Nolan. Since Nolan was an "unwilling combatant," the onus and responsibility was on Sestito to stop punching the LA King or be subjected to Rule 46.2 as the "aggressor" (the aggressor in an altercation shall be the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant). Tom Sestitos actions clearly qualified him as the aggressor in this altercation. I scored the punch count six direct hits by Sestito to the head area of Nolan. Jordan Nolan, on the other hand, was undeserving of a penalty on the play because he did nothing in response to being continually punched by Sestito; even to the point of keeping his gloves and stick in his hands. Each player is penalized based on their actions and response during an altercation. The penalties assessed to Tom Sestito became accumulative when Sestito dropped his gloves immediately after an end zone faceoff, travelled the short distance to Jordan Nolan and began unloading punches. Based on the rules, these actions qualified this altercation as a fight and clearly identified Sestito as the instigator (Rule 46.11). In thhe November 1 altercation you reference, Ray Emery left his goal crease and charged the length of the ice to fight with Brayden Holtby. Jim Otto Raiders Jersey. The Washington goalkeeper reluctantly dropped his gloves and was forced to defend himself when referee Francois St.-Laurent was unable to intervene and restrain Emery from the deliberate attack. The punches that Holtby threw in self-defense were deserving of a five minute fighting major. Brayden Holtby would not have been assessed a five minute fighting major if he had turtled or failed to respond in the same manner as Jordan Nolan did last night in L.A. As you see, Ryan, it is possible for the referee to assess a fighting major to one player only. If that were the case it would be in addition to the appropriate instigator penalties. Aside from the additional minor penalty for leaving his goal crease on November 1, Ray Emery received the same penalties that Tom Sestito was assessed in last nights game; two minutes plus a 10-minute misconduct for instigating; five minutes for fighting; and a game-misconduct as the aggressor. There is no question that Vancouver intended to send the Kings a strong message and push back from their previous meeting of January 4, which sidelined Canucks goalkeeper Roberto Luongo. The fuse was lit! It only took nine seconds before Zack Kassian was penalized for dragging Dustin Brown around with his hockey stick firmly hooked between Browns legs after chatting the Kings captain up prior to the opening faceoff. Tom Sestito only lasted a second on his first shift of the game for speed bagging Jordan Nolan who, by the way, should have been penalized for charging Henrik Sedin. A timely penalty call against Nolan would have been a perfect opportunity for the refs to send a message of their own in an effort to establish some control and to bring the temperature down early. It was a gift handed to the men in stripes that was ultimately rejected! It became a constant uphill battle for them from that point in the game. In the end, it was Dustin Brown that once again did the most damage by scoring the only goal of the game early in the third period for a Kings win. I dont think the expression "time heals all wounds" will apply when these teams meet next on April 5 in Vancouver. All eyes will be focused on that matchup; including the refs as well. BRADENTON, Fla. Isa Abdul-Quddus Dolphins Jersey . -- The Detroit Tigers think Alex Gonzalez is not too old to be a solution to their shortstop problem. In need of a replacement for injured Jose Iglesias, Detroit acquired the 37-year-old from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday for infielder Steve Lombardozzi. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Gonzalez could get the bulk of the playing time, sharing the position with Andrew Romine, who was acquired Friday from the Los Angeles Angels. "Im not looking at 150 games," Dombrowski said. "Hes an older guy. But we do think he can be a key guy for us." Gonzalez has a .246 average with six major league teams and was the starting shortstop for the 2003 World Series champion Florida Marlins. Gonzalez agreed Jan. 31 to a minor league contract that calls for a $1.1 million salary in the major leagues. He had a .429 batting average during spring training with Baltimore and is to report to Tigers on Tuesday. "Hes always had great hands, and I cant imagine his hands have gotten any worse," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "Ive heard great things about him in spring training, as far as how hes moving. And I think his experience is a huge advantage." Dombrowski said his office had been busy for the past week trying to find replacement shortstops. There even was joking speculation the team might try to talk first base coach Omar Vizquel, 46, into making a comeback. Vizquel saw Gonzalez play winter ball in Venezuela and gave the Tigers a positive scouting report. "Hes younger than Omar," Ausmus said with a laugh. Two years ago Vizquel was the oldest shortstop in big league history. The 25-year-old Lombardozzi hit .259 with two homers and 22 RBIs for the Washington Nationals last season and was dealt to Detroit in December for pitcher Doug Fister. To make room for Lombardozzi on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated catcher Johnny Monell for assignment. Kiko Alonso Dolphins Jersey . CALGARY -- Canadian womens skeleton racer Sarah Reid shrugged her shoulders at the World Cup finish line Friday after just missing out on a chance to lock up a spot for the Sochi Games. Lorenzo Taliaferro Ravens Jersey . About an hour later, Reid was sporting an Olympic-sized grin. The winner had been disqualified after the race due to a sled handle violation. That moved everyone up one position and put Reid into sixth place, which allowed her to book her ticket to Sochi. "Its crazy," Reid said. "I feel like it hasnt really sunk in yet." American Noelle Pikus-Pace finished first in the womens race in one minute 54.88 seconds but her disqualification gave the gold to Britains Elizabeth Yarnold, who finished 0.16 seconds behind. Russias Elena Nikitina earned silver in 1:55.28 and Michelle Steele of Australia took bronze in 1:55.30. Eric Neilson of Kelowna, B.C., also booked his Olympic ticket with a fifth-place result in the mens race at Canada Olympic Park. Neilson also said the Sochi news hasnt sunk in. "Not even close," he said with a laugh. "I dont know if Ill actually believe it until the coaches say, This is our Olympic team. Eric Neilson youre on it -- go." There will be two more World Cup events before the Olympic skeleton roster is officially unveiled Dec. 18. Racers need four top-six finishes over two seasons to qualify for the Sochi Games, but at least one has to come in the current campaign. Bobsledders Jesse Lumsden and Chris Spring reached the podium later in the evening, winning bronze in the two-man event. "I think we both agree were happy, were not satisfied," Lumsden said. "My goal as a pusher is to help Chris have top-three starts every race all year long. So this was a great way to set the tone." Lumsden, from Burlington, Ont., and Spring, from Calgary, were third in 1:49.42. Americans Steven Holcomb and Steve Langton won gold in 1:49.22, just 0.16 seconds ahead of Switzerlands Beat Hefti and Alex Baumann. In the mens skeleton, Martin Dukurs of Latvia set a track record of 55.31 seconds on his second run and earned the mens gold with a two-run time of 1:51.39. Dukurs was well ahead of Alexander Tretiakov of Russia, who finished in 1:52.14. Britains Dominic Edward Parsons won bronze in 1:52.74. Neilson tied his career-best finish at a World Cup. He finished fourth at the world championships last season. Dukurs trimmed over four-10ths of a second off the previous track record (55.72) set by Canadas Jeff Pain in February 2005. The Latvian won the overall World Cup title last season. The track push record also fell Friday. Tretiakovs first start time of 4.75 seconds was a shade better than his previous best of 4.76 from November 2005. The Russian improved his mark again with a 4.71 in the second run. Calgary-based racers Dave Greszczyszyn and John Fairbairn also finished in the top 10. Greszczyszyn was sixth in his World Cup debut in 1:53.06 and Fairbairn was ninth in 1:53.17. In the womens race, officials ruled that Pikus-Pace violated Rule 14.5 by racing with additional handles on her sled. Heinz Thoma, a FIBT World Cup co-ordinator, said another team first noticed the violation and pointed it out to an official. "They look at each other carefully," Thoma said. "Were on the way to (the) Olympics." The FIBT is the sanctioning body for bobsled and skeleton. The sled was inspected and the official results were released about an hour after the race finish. Thomas said about one-third of the sleds are usually inspected after a race, adding that violations occur from time to time. He couldnt recall the last time a violation affected a World Cup race winner. Pikus-Pace later told The Associated Press that the British team complained about an extra piece of tape that was wrapped around the handle. The sled -- and the tape -- had both been approved for competition earlier in the week, Pikus-Pace said, and U.S. officials were appealing the disqualification. "Clearly, clearly, I should not have been disqualified," Pikus-Pace told the AP in a phone interview. "Im so frustrated. People get away with whatever and I get disqualified for a piece of tape? A piece of tape that they said was OK? It has no competitive advantage whatsoever." Rule 14.5 states that the saddle handles must be mounted on the construction frame, and that "no additional handles, howsoever they are constructed, are permitted on the saddle." A race official said later in the evening that the appeal would not be entertained and that the decision was final. Reid, who won bronze at the 2013 world championship, was just over a half-second off the lead with a time of 1:55.56. Calgarys Robynne Thompson was eighth and Cassie Hawrysh of Brandon, Man., was 10th. Mellisa Hollingsworth of Eckville, Alta., and 2010 Olympic champion Jon Montgomery of Russell, Man., will open the season on the Intercontinental Cup circuit. Athletes can qualify for Sochi while competing on that circuit or at the World Cup level. Lyndon Rush of Humboldt, Sask., and Calgarys Lascelles Brown were eighth in the two-man bobsled. Justin Kripps of Summerland, B.C., and Bryan Barnett of Calgary were 12th. The four-man bobsled and womens bobsled events were set for Saturday. Dallas Clark Ravens Jersey . The Senators goalie has struggled in his rare starts, leaving the 23-year-old Lenher wondering what else he can do.Honestly I cant really explain it, said Lehner. The last few games Ive played I work hard and Im trying to get better and I feel good, but bar in, post in, it hits someone. Its just not going my way. I dont know, I guess Ill have a long sauna and think about things and who did I hurt to get these bounces. I dont know.Obviously, Ive got to go back and try to get even better. Ive got to find a way.Ottawa got off to a rough start, but rallied only to see the game slip away as well as another two points in the standings.(Coming back) its another moral victory, but its a little too late for them, said Senators forward Bobby Ryan. Youre point watching in January. Its tough.Jamie Benn struck twice for the Stars (22-19-7), while Colton Sceviour, Ales Hemsky and Trevor Daley had goals as well. Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves for the win.Mika Zibanejad, Ryan and Alex Chiasson scored for the Senators (19-19-9).Thursdays game marked Jason Spezzas return to Ottawa for the first time since being traded to the Stars in the off-season. While few knew how the former Senators captain would be received, the 18,752 on hand gave Spezza a standing ovation following a video tribute early in the first period.Im happy to have it over, said Spezza. Its an emotional game. I was really thankful to the Senators organization for having a little tribute to me there and the reception of the fans acknowledgement. It was a great chapter of my career being here and for me this gives me a little closing of a chapter and looking forward to the future with the Stars, but the first time (back) was tough. Its emotional coming back. With the game tied 3-3 the Stars took the lead midway thrrough the third period, as Klingberg took advantage of an Ottawa turnover to break in alone and beat Lehner with a wrist shot. Crockett Gillmore Ravens Jersey. I thought our whole game was slow, was sloppy, said Senators coach Dave Cameron. We were a real easy team to play against so that led to some real quality chances against. It was just one of those games where we got back into it, but we still didnt have the jump.Trailing 3-2, Chiasson tied things up early in the third as he took a cross-ice pass from Kyle Turris and tapped it in as he drove to the net. It was Chiassons first goal in 17 games.I guess I cant believe I put that one in, said Chiasson with a laugh. It was a nice play by (Turris). I faced a little bit of adversity this week. Its not easy as a player to think youre going to be out of the lineup. After a rough start to the game the Senators had a much better second period, thanks to some solid goaltending from Lehner.Lehner made huge saves on Spezza, two on Patrick Eaves and got a little help when Seguin rang a shot off the goalpost. The Senators were outshot 16-8 in the second.Things did not start well for Ottawa as it trailed 3-0 by the 12-minute mark of the first period, although two late goals salvaged an otherwise rough start.Zibanejad got the Senators on the board as he retrieved his own rebound and jammed it in. With less than two minutes remaining Ryan, who now has 21 points in 20 games, was able to jump on a loose puck in the crease to bring the Senators within one.Benn opened the scoring with a power-play goal as he was left wide open. Less than a minute later Sceviour made it 2-0 as he deflected a shot in front. Hemsky made it 3-0 on the Stars second power-play goal of the period as picked the top corner to beat Lehner glove side.Notes: D Mark Borowiecki, D Patrick Wiercioch and C David Legwand were a healthy scratch. "Im proud of the way Im playing just now, because I had to do a lot of work to get back to where I want to be," Murray said after celebrating with his teammates on the red clay court in a temporary stadium in left field of the downtown home of baseballs San Diego Padres.PORTLAND, OREGON – Four second-half goals propelled Vancouver Whitecaps FC to a dominant 5-1 win over Portmore United in the first match of the Rose City Invitational Sunday at Providence Park. Defender Jordan Harvey bagged a second-half brace, while Nicolas Mezquida, Darren Mattocks, and Russell Teibert each scored their first goals of the preseason in a match that saw Whitecaps FC outshoot the 10-men Jamaican outfit by a 21-9 margin. Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson fielded a squad composed almost entirely of MLS players on Sunday, including the teams four most experienced defenders in Andy OBrien, Jay DeMerit, Harvey, and recently acquired right back Steven Beitashour. The only non-MLS player in the starting lineup was Residency goalkeeper Marco Carducci, who at 17 years old is the youngest player at camp. After a fairly uneventful start to the match, the action picked up around the 15-minute mark when Portmore goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett was shown a straight red for handling the ball outside the box. The 6-foot-4 keeper was forced to come off his line after Sebastian Fernandez found an unmarked Mezquida with a great ball over the top down the middle of the park. On the ensuing free kick, a six-man Portmore wall blocked Fernandezs low strike from the edge of the box to keep the score level. The Caps had another great chance just a few minutes later, when Mattocks broke into the area only to see his attempt stymied by substitute Portmore keeper Gariece McPherson. Despite going down to 10-men early, Portmore opened the scoring in the 26th minute on what was their only real chance of the match. Against the run of play, Leaughn Williams broke in down the right flank and found a streaking Ricardo Morris inside the area. The midfielder then curled it first time just bbeyond the outstretched arms of Carducci to give Portmore a 1-0 lead. Casey Hayward Packers Jersey. . From that point forward, the Caps took over. They controlled possession, looked dangerous in the final third, and didnt give their Jamaican opponents another sniff at goal. Two players instrumental in Whitecaps FCs dominance were Teibert, who again looked confident in a holding position, and Beitashour, who was active on the right flank. Eventually, a deflected Beitashour cross led to Vancouvers first goal in the 31st minute. The ball landed at Mezquidas feet just outside the six-yard box and the Uruguayan smashed it on a half-volley into the top left corner of the goal. Vancouver picked up where they left off in the second half, as Harvey banged in the eventual winner in the 49th minute after Erik Hurtado found him unmarked at the far post. The early second-half marker seemed to take the wind out of Portmores sails, as fatigue began to take its toll. After a handful of earlier chances, Mattocks finally found the back of the net in the 65th minute, finishing from in tight to give Whitecaps FC a 3-1 lead. Teibert set up the play with a header from midfield, just minutes after he moved up to the right wing to replace Hurtado. Then, after Harvey scored his second goal of the match with a cross that sailed into the top right corner of the goal, Mattocks returned the favour in the 87th minute. The Portmore native slipped an inviting pass into box before Teibert coolly finished to cap off a dominant 5-1 performance at Providence Park. Also of note, Kekuta Manneh and Kenny Miller made their first appearances of the preseason as second-half substitutes on Sunday. Both players made an immediate impact, as Manneh set up Harveys second goal and nearly had one of his own in the 76th minute. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets took advantage of the Minnesota Wild, who were coming off an emotional game a day earlier. Robert Alford Falcons Jersey . The Blue Jackets got goals from Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno, Boone Jenner and R.J. Umberger and Curtis McElhinney posted his first shutout since 2011 in a 4-0 victory on Friday night. "We talked about them playing last night and there was definitely an emphasis to jump all over them," Umberger said, referring to the Wilds 4-3 home win over Chicago. "We were moving pretty good." The Blue Jackets had not played since Tuesday, filling the time with two hard, full practices in which they were able to work on several problem areas. Minnesotas Zach Parise knew his team didnt have its heart in the game. "We were just flat and not crisp," he said. "We were pretty brutal through the neutral zone and couldnt get anything generated." Wild coach Mike Yeo didnt want to use his clubs first home win over the Blackhawks since 2008 as an excuse, but still thought that was the root of his clubs problems. "We played right into that (being tired), too, turning pucks over," he said. "We were on our heels, slow reacting, slow getting to places. We were not pressing the way we needed to be." It was the Blue Jackets second win in a row, the first time theyve won back-to-back games since Oct. 25. They did it in their first game without last years Vezina Trophy winner as the NHLs top goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky, who will miss the next month or so with a strained groin. McElhinney made 20 saves in his first shutout since Feb. 5, 2011, while with the Anaheim Ducks. "Its a good feeling for me to step in here again and have another shutout game, another win," he said, referring to the Blue Jackets consecutive shutouts. "Hopefully, its the start of something good and we can keep it going." Foligno and Umberger each also had assists and Ryan Johansen added two assists to stretch his points streak to four games. The Blue Jackets have been struggling with injuries. In addition to Bobrovsky, top offensive threat Marian Gaborik (sprained knee) is out for another two weeks and top off-season free-agent signing Nathan Horton (shoulder surgery) has yet to play in a Columbus sweater and likely wont be ready for at least another month. McElhinneys third NHL shutout came in his 78th game. After a scoreless first period, the Blue Jackets took over. At the 1:17 mark of the second, Atkinson took a pass from Dubinsky and wristed a shot from the top of the right circle that Minnesota goalie Niklas Backstrom didnt appear to see. He barely moved as the puck beat him high and near his right shoulder. "Some games its tougher to swallow the puck when you dont see it," he said. The Blue Jackets went on their first power play when Matt Cooke went off for hooking. Columbus soon took advantage on the man advantage. Johansen passed to Umberger for a shot from a hard angle that handcuffed Backstrom, with Johansen then following the puck to get a whack at it on the rebound. Before the puck could be cleared, Foligno found the net on his second attempt from the right doorstep at the 5:40 mark. "We were able to maintain our energy and continue to push," Foligno said. "You saw great efforts from everybody tonight -- and Curtis McElhinney shut the door." The Wild had a prime chance to get back in the game when they had 1:13 of a 5-on-3 advantage midway through the second period. But McElhinney smothered a hard slap shot from the left point by Jason Pominville and then later appeared to stop a high shot by Zach Parise off his mask. "The big thing was that 5 on 3," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "That was a critical point of the game. Curtis made probably three great saves for us and our (penalty) killers did a great job." Columbus was still controlling the play early in the third when, on a 3-on-3 rush, Jenner wristed a shot from the top of the left circle that eluded Backstrom high on his glove side. The goal, at the 4:38 mark, was the rookies third of the season. Umberger closed the scoring at the 9:05 mark when, while trailing the play, he benefited from a nifty feed from Foligno. Foligno had only one defender to beat but instead whipped a blind pass to Umberger who had virtually an empty net. Notes: The Blue Jackets improved to 35-0 under Richards when leading after two periods. ... It was the Wilds third loss in a row on the road. ... Minnesota has been shut out in two of its past three games. Jalen Collins Falcons Jersey . -- Canadian ski cross star Marielle Thompson accomplished two goals in one race Saturday. Chris Chester Falcons Jersey . Pressley missed all of last season with Cincinnati because of a knee injury, but the 5-foot-10, 249-pounder had been expected to fill a need on Clevelands roster. http://www.atlantafalconsnflstore.com/authentic-matt-ryan-falcons-jersey/ . Every once in awhile, it seems like life lets dreams become real - and that is a gift.THE FORMATIONS: Montreal Impact started the 2014 season in Dallas and their starting XI featured few surprises as new coach Frank Klopas stuck to the 4-3-3 shape his team adopted in pre-season. Klopas had a number of suspensions and injuries to deal with, including star man Marco Di Vaio, so he named Andrew Wenger up top and pushed Houssoun Camara into the centre-back position. First round draft pick Eric Miller got his first MLS start at right back. Collen Warner joined Hernan Bernadello in central midfield with Felipe playing as the attacking central midfield. FC Dallas had a number of injuries themselves with goalkeeper Raul Fernandez and key defenders George John and Zach Loyd missing. New coach Oscar Pareja also adopted a 4-3-3 system that he was familiar with in Colorado. THE GAME: This was a very entertaining match full of tactical adjustments and questionable referee decisions that played a significant impact on the final result. Montreals 4-3-3 turns into a 4-2-3-1 on the counter attack but also, importantly, when they press and this was the theme of the game early. Klopas had his front four press intelligently and the young backline of Dallas, combined with opening day nerves as Pareja later admitted, made it a very difficult opening 15 minutes for the home team. Montreal started on the front foot, causing many turnovers deep in their opponents half. The wide players of Dallas can be electrifying in attack but have little will to defend their flanks, putting pressure on the central midfield pair to carry the load. This works well if the playmaker, in this case Mauro Diaz, cuts in and takes away Hernan Bernadellos distribution but this didnt happen. With Bernadello free, Felipe had license to move forward and this is how Montreal opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Justin Mapp, rightfully so, got the headlines for the goal, cutting in brilliantly on the right, beating three defenders, and supplying scorer Sanna Nyassi at the back post, but it was Felipes run forward that forced the back four to shift over and leave Nyassi unmarked. Montreals dominance continued after the goal, with Bernadello running the show. The Argentine DP sent a long ball over the top for Andrew Wenger to run on to and his cross found Felipe who should have made it 2-0. Bernadello is a very important player for Montreal in this system, and as they play on the counter he is very good at supplying long-range passes to feet, rather than an easy square ball that keeps possession but does nothing for their attack. With Montreal in control, Dallas rocked them back with an equalizer that was their first real threat on goal. A simple ball over the top wasnt cleared by Matteo Ferrari and Fabian Castillo got in behindd to tap home. Deion Jones Falcons Jersey. It was the goal Dallas needed to calm down and for all of Montreals good play to open the match they were now level. THE TURNING POINT: Diaz will be an interesting player to watch for Dallas this season. With David Ferreira gone, he is now their playmaker. At 1-1 he started to get more touches on the ball and drift away from Bernadello. In the 23rd minute, he shuffled out to the right side and dribbled his way towards the box, facing up with Jeb Brovsky. The left back showed him inside, a route Diaz accepted and as he got in front of Brovsky, the Impact man touched him and he went down. A penalty was awarded and it was very harsh. Blas Perez stepped up and blasted home. Montreal would spend the rest of the game behind. The deficit was increased to 3-1 shortly after half-time when Diaz scored a brilliant free kick just outside the area after Bernadello had been deemed to handle the ball when he was turning away blocking a shot. Once again, the decision seemed very harsh. THE POSITIVES: Impact would make it 3-2 later in the game when Wenger scored an outstanding header from a Felipe cross. It was a goal out of nothing and that is exactly what Montreal will need this season from Wenger, whether Di Vaio is playing or not. Tactically, the midfield central three will cause opponents many problems this season if Bernadello and Felipe play at a high level all season. This is where they will be able to dictate a matchs style. They can counter well and maintain possession, while also protecting the back four. The introduction of new signing Santiago Gonzalez, at 3-2 after 68 minutes, was an exciting one for Montreal and showed some flexibility from Klopas. The Uruguayan was immediately pushed up front, to play just off Wenger, and the midfield turned into a diamond. It made the visitors narrower but this took away the desire of FC Dallas to stretch the game. Once again, Montreal dominated this stretch of the match but the score line within it failed to show that. THE NEGATIVES: Both Dallas and Montreal faded badly last season after starting well so it is difficult to know just how good Dallas are this season but they certainly caused Montreals back four some problems. The left side of Brovsky and Nyassi defensively were often exposed and Klopas had to put Miller there late in the game, bringing on Calum Mallace to play right back. THE STAR MAN: For Dallas, it was, unquestionably, Diaz although Castillo had a very good game. Mapp was Montreals best player and his pace and ball control caused Dallas issues throughout. It was no coincidence that both Castillo and Mapp played on the same flank, allowing each other to attack the full back in one-on-one situations. The Bruins bury the Red Wings, Pittsburgh controls play against Columbus, Colorados amazing comeback and the Kings stay alive; Scott Cullen has notes on Krug, Hamilton, Nyquist, Crosby, MacKinnon, Quick and more. Johnny Jolly Jersey . BRUINS FINISH RED WINGS The Boston Bruins calmly dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, with a 4-2 win Saturday afternoon, wrapping up their first-round series in five games. While the series was short, it was relatively competitive but, in the end, the Bruins simply had too much. In Game Five, the Red Wings had a goal and an assist each from Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg -- and contributions from their superstars may have been their best chance for the upset -- but it wasnt enough. Boston got a goal and an assist from LW Milan Lucic and two assist from D Torey Krug on their way to the second round. The tough part for the Red Wings is that they couldnt get any production out of the young forwards that had played such vital roles this season. LW Tomas Tatar, C Riley Sheahan and RW Gustav Nyquist were held off the scoresheet in all five games and the tendency might be to think that these inexperienced forwards were overmatched in the moment, but they were Detroits best puck possession trio in the series, all three on for better than 58% of shot attempts at 5-on-5. Yet, there was ultimately some dissatisfaction from the Wings, who needed goals, not possession. In the series-deciding game, which Detroit trailed for 42 minutes, Nyquist played only 11:55, a threshold he surpassed in 44 of the previous 45 games. Detroits uphill battle was made steeper by the fact that G Jimmy Howard missed the last two games with a suspected concussion. Jonas Gustavsson actually played well, stopping 66 of 72 shots (.917), but its tough to upend the Bruins with a second-string goaltender. Datsyuk, playing on a bad knee, finished with five points in five games and was the only Red Wing with more than two points in the series. The Bruins emerged from the series, relatively easily, even though David Krejcis line struggled in possession terms. It certainly didnt hurt to have G Tuukka Rask at the top of his game, stopping 146 of 152 shots (.961) in the series. C Patrice Bergeron and Krug tied for the Bruins team lead with five points in the series. Lucic, RW Jarome Iginla and D Dougie Hamilton each had four points. That the Bruins young defencemen were able to contribute offensively proved to be a real advantage. The series win sets up Boston for a matchup with their rivals from Montreal. The top-seeded Bruins will be favoured, but the head-to-head matchups with the Canadiens have been tumultuous, dramatic affairs (well, forever, but also) in recent seasons, so it should be a fascinating battle. PENGUINS TAKE SERIES LEAD Perhaps feeling a little threatened, with the series tied 2-2, the Pittsburgh Penguins came out firing in Game Five and dominated play on their way to a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The margin could have been much if not for the play of Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 48 of the 50 shots he faced. As the Penguins made a concerted effort to play Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin together on the top line, it turned out that Pittsburghs best possession numbers came from the second and third lines. Lee Stempniak, Brandon Sutter, Jussi Jokinen and Beau Bennett were each on the ice for more than 70% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Pittsburghs depth was also boosted by the presence of C Marcel Goc, who played 10:34 in his first game since suffering an ankle injury March 27. The possession domination for Pittsburgh, naturally, had a counter in Columbus, where Jack Skille, R.J. Umberger, Nick Foligno and Artem Anisimov were each below 30%. Penguins D Brooks Orpik missed the game with an undisclosed injury, giving Robert Bortuzzo an opportunity to play his first NHL playoff game and Bortuzzo didnt hurt the Penguins in 13:36 of ice time. While there has been criticism of Sidney Crosby for his play in this series, it needs to be said that his play is probably better than fine. After 11 individual shot attempts, and one assist, in Game Five, Crosby has five points and a in five games and has been on the ice for 60.1% of the shot attempts during 5-on-5 play. His LW, Chris Kunitz, had a goal and an assist, with seven shots on goal and six hits, in Game Five. This hasnt been an easy series for the Penguins, by any stretch, and theyre still trying to do it with the second-best goaltender in the series, but their skill advantage has been enough to give them the lead in the series. ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY Trailing 2-1 into the third period of Game Five, the Minnesota Wild scored twice in the first 6:25 of the third period to take the lead and appeared on their way to taking the game, before the Avalanche scored with 1:14 remaining to tie it, then finished matters 3:27 into overtime. In the end, the 4-3 overtime win gave the Avalanche a 3-2 series lead. The winning goal was authored by Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon, who finished the game with a goal and two assists, giving him a playoff-leading 10 points thus far. Hes three points away from Jaromir Jagrs scoring record for an 18-year-old rookie in the postseason. MacKinnon played 21:56 in Game Five, second among Colorado forwards, behind only Paul Stastny (22:3; MacKinnon, who averaged 17:21 of ice time per game during the regular season, has played more than 21 minutes in four of five games in the series. The sequence leading up to the game-tying goal was contentious. There was an apparent holding penalty that was ignored in Colorados defensive zone, with the net empty, and then the Avalanche appeared to be offside seconds before PA Parenteau buried the tying goal. This is what is known as "getting the breaks." Avalanche LW Cody McLeod scored a goal, but was obliterated at even-strength, on for two shot attempts for and 17 against (10.5%). With McLeod off the ice, the Avalanche had 56.2% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. For the Wild, LW Matt Moulson, C Mikko Koivu and D Marco Scandella were on the ice for at least two-thirds of the shot attempts at 5-on-5, though Scandella was unfortunate enough to get beaten by McKinnon on the winning goal. Its been a close series to this point, though the Wild have held the possession edge, and it shifts back to Minnesota for Game Six. Colorado may get a boost with C Matt Duchene nearing a return to the lineup. If Duchene is ready to go, that ought to help Colorados cause. KINGS KEEP ON KEEPING ON Facing elimination for the second time in the series, the Los Angeles Kings stormed into San Jose Saturday night and outplayed the Sharks from the get-go, building a 3-0 lead 22 seconds into the second period before chilling out and taking that lead to games end. The Kings had outshot the Sharks 19-6 by the time they had taken that 3-0 lead, chasing Sharks G Antti Niemi. Not only did the Sharks lose the game, but also lost D Marc-Edouard Vlasic was hurt (upper-body injury) on a run-in with Kings C Jarret Stoll. It cost Stoll two minutes for roughing, but Vlasic did not return. If hes not able to play in Game Six, thats a huge blow to the Sharks.. Kings RW Justin Williams had a game-high seven shots on goal (11 shot attempts), leading the Kings on ice for 73.1% of shot attempts. Kings G Jonathan Quick stopped all 30 shots sent in his direction, a decided improvement after some rough games earlier in the series. While the Kings are trying to make the unlikeliest of comebacks, from being down 3-0, if they manage to get good goaltending from Quick, maybe its possible. Here at TSN.ca we will take a look back at the season by bringing together a panel of experts to help pick the best 50 players of the season. This list is based purely on their performances this season. It is not a list of who we think the best 50 players in the league are. Fourteen members were asked to take part (panel below) and submit their top 20 players of the season. Their list was then placed into a scoring system and then the totals determined the overall positions in the top 50. Each day this week we will release the list in 10s. The sport is very much about opinions, so please feel free to write your own list in the comments below. You can read part one of the list here. You can read part two of the list here. Petr Cech (Chelsea) – “He is one of the best in the world,” said his manager Jose Mourinho this season. Not all that comes out of the mouth of Jose is correct, but it is hard to argue with Cechs incredible consistency. Prone to a high-profile error now and then, he, perhaps, will never be seen as reaching the real elite level of all-time goalkeepers, but he had been outstanding for Chelseas new-look tight defence this season. The best goalkeeper in the Premier League, according to the panel. 29. Romelu Lukaku (Everton) – Lukaku didnt score as many goals this season for Everton as he did for West Brom last season, but his second successive loan campaign was very successful. The Belgian simply grew as a player under Roberto Martinez, linking up better with teammates and playing any role that was asked of him by his manager. This was never more apparent than at home to Arsenal last month when his lethal runs from out wide showed his maturation as a forward and caused many problems for the opposing defence. 28. Gareth Barry (Everton) – Last August, Martinez knocked on Barrys door and wanted a chat. In his living room, he convinced the Englishman to come to Everton and be a part of his new-look Toffees. Barry was the perfect player for Martinezs system, allowing the full backs to push on, knowing a defensive-minded, ball-playing central midfielder can drop deep and split the centre-backs. The Spanish manager has raved about him all season and, unlike Lukaku, looks likely to turn the loan into a full-time move this summer. 27. Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle) – Cabaye left for PSG at the end of January, but hhad left his stamp on the Premier League, guiding Newcastle to safety and allowing the club to be one of the worst in the league since and not lose their top-10 status. Clay Matthews Packers Jersey. The French midfielder was a true difference maker at St James Park, happy to play in the deep-lying playmaker role where he tore teams to shreds or, as he did at Old Trafford, just off the striker where he was equally effective. A Brilliant passer and set-piece taker, Cabaye isnt just missed by Newcastle fans, the Premier League misses him, too. 26. Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea) – Simply one of the most underappreciated talents in the league. Playing for such a big club, in a high-profile league, it really is quite remarkable how little attention Ivanovic gets. The Serbian has been brilliant this season and has improved considerably as a right back under Mourinho, where he isnt required to make too many inroads into the opponents final third. At centre-back, he might be even better and he was absolutely magnificent in Chelseas 2-0 win at Liverpool last month. 25. Per Mertesacker (Arsenal) – One of the most improved players of the season, although, he was excellent in the second half of last season, also. Mertesacker has been a great mentor to Laurent Koscielny and the two have formed a strong partnership in central defence. The German also brings something to Arsenal that is very important – a winning mentality. He knows what it takes to get to a level that the Gunners remain too far away from. Far too many empty promises come from that dressing room and sidelines, but Mertesacker is not guilty of any of them. Easy to look at his performances in those away thrashings and question his spot but collectively Arsenal were pathetic on those days. 24. Vincent Kompany (Man City) – Not a vintage year for the captain of Man City, where too many mistakes led to goals and red cards, however, Kompany continues to be one of the games finest defenders, who makes players around him better. At the moment, he is the face of the team, but if they want to progress to to the level of a true European powerhouse, they need to find at least one centre-back who is even better than the Belgian. 23. Samir Nasri (Man City) – The Frenchman had lost his way under Roberto Mancini and the Italian manager told the media that ‘he was wasting his talent. Frustrated at a lack of playing time and his narrow system, Nasri was unleashed by new manager Manuel Pellegrini and has had a great season at the Etihad. City are blessed with playmakers behind their strikers, who have an appreciation of space and can pick key passes in and around the box. Nasri is no David Silva, but he is now a star on whom City can rely heavily. 22. Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace) – Every season a player is promoted and then makes a name for himself by becoming such an important member of a team that stays up. Last season, it was Southamptons Morgan Schneiderlin, who led all players in tackles and interceptions. This season it is Jedinak who, remarkably, leads all players (who started more than 58 per cent of games) in those categories. The Aussie has been the heartbeat of a Crystal Palace team that was on life support in November. Throughout their struggles he was excellent and was even better when they molded into a solid team, around him, under Tony Pulis. It was a fitting moment that Jedinak scored the penalty at West Ham that won the game 1-0 and assured the Eagles of another year in the top flight. 21. Ross Barkley (Everton) - With all due respect to Eden Hazard, the PFA Young Player of the Year Award was made for a player like Barkley. Few had heard about the midfielder this time last year and the Scouser had a breakthrough campaign, playing with a youthful energy that helps him glide by opponents on the ball with an arrogant swagger not seen enough by a young Englishman since Paul Gascoigne. He is, however, more than just an attacking midfielder who can score spectacular goals, as he isnt afraid to get involved in the physical side of the game, much like Steven Gerrard was at his age. The hype machine could develop quickly with those comparisons, but he has a manager and a club that will keep him grounded for now. Itll be a crime if he isnt named in Roy Hodgsons squad for Brazil. Throughout the NHL playoffs, I have forecasted each round simply by using shots on goal and goaltender save percentage to come up with a baseline for the series. Dennis Pitta Ravens Jersey . Its not intended to be some magical formula and doesnt apply any context, like, for example, taking injuries into account. This remedial statistical method has gone 9-5 in picks through the first three rounds. Heres a quick look at the five series that went the wrong way: In the first round, Columbus came in ahead of Pittsburgh, though that required Sergei Bobrovsky to perform better than Marc-Andre Fleury (not an impossibility given Fleurys playoff track record), but Fleury and Bobrovsky each had a .908 save percentage in Round One and Pittsburgh dominated puck possession to an extent that they did not during the regular season. Minnesota upended Colorado, in Game Seven overtime, which wasnt altogether surprising. I would have easily been able to talk myself into the upset had the Wild not gone into the series with Ilya Bryzgalov as their starting goaltender, because the Wild were a superior possession team. Darcy Kuemper returned for four games and helped tilt the series back in Minnesotas favour and Semyon Varlamov, whose regular-season play fueled the Avalanches top seed finish, was only okay in the postseason, posting a .913 save percentage in seven games. The touchiest series for this years playoffs was the San Jose-Los Angeles matchup in Round One. The forecast had the Sharks favoured by the slimmest of margins (18.15 expected goals to 18.09 expected goals) and, when they had a 3-0 series lead, that coin flip looked to be falling the right way. We know how that has turned out since that point. In the second round, the Boston Bruins were favoured over the Montreal Canadiens, and while the Bruins controlled large portions of the series, they couldnt solve Carey Price, who had a .936 save percentage in the seven-game upset. Then, in the Conference Finals, the forecast put the Chicago Blackhawks over the Los Angeles Kings, due to a goaltending advantage, because Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick hasnt been great in this years playoffs. After what was a sensational series, it was safe to say that neither team held a goaltending advantage -- both Quick and Corey Crawford struggled -- and the Kings took Game Seven in OT. So, those misses are on the record as we head into the Stanley Cup Final. The expected goals for each team in the series are determined by taking each teams shots for and against over the course of the season, as well as through the first round of the playoffs, and splitting the difference. So, for example, the New York Rangers, over the regular season and playoffs have averaged 32.4 shots on goal per game and the Los Angeles Kings have allowed 27.0 shots on goal per game; the average of those two numbers, 29.70 shots, is the number that is then multiplied by (1 - the opposing goaltenders save percentage) to determine an expected goals per game for the Rangers. Finally, the number is multiplied by seven to indicate an expected goal total for a seven-game series. Theres no guarantee that scoring more goals in a series will result in winning four games first, but the odds certainly favour the team that scores more. So, lets see how the numbers shake out for the Final: Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Los Angeles 31.5 27.0 Jonathan Quick 0.912 16.54 N.Y. Rangers 32.4 29.1 Henrik Lundqvist 0.922 18.30 Verdict: While the Kings and Rangers are very similar in their playoff puck possession rates, the Kings were tops in the league during the regular season and ran through a more difficult gauntlet in the Western Conference to reach the Cup Final. The difference in shot rates during the regular season is pretty small, however, with the Kings earning 54.7% of the shots as the Rangers earned 53.0% of the total shots. Over the course of a game, that amounts to about one extra shot on goal; hardly the kind of difference that couldnt be overcome by better goaltending. Which brings us to the advantage to which the Rangers will cling. Lundqvist has been one of the games top goaltenders since coming into the league in 2005-2006, and is performing at a high level in this years playoffs as well, so couldnt he stop an extra shot or two per game? At the other end, Jonathan Quick has traditionally been a very good playoff goaltender in his own right, but his .906 save percentage this year has dropped Quicks all-time playoff save percentage to .922, falling fractionally behind Lundqvist. Certainly, some of the blame for this seasons save percentage can be attributed to the calibre of teams that the Kings have faced on their way to the Cup Final, with San Jose (sixth), Anaheim (first) and Chicago (second) all among the top-scoring teams in the league this season. By comparison, the Rangers got through Philadelphia (eighth), Pittsburgh (fifth) and Montreal (21st), so there is some quality of competition favouring Quick. It would be an upset if the Rangers won the series but a seven-game series, if otherwise close, can easily be decided by goaltending and, right now, its not unreasonable to hold higher expectations for Lundqvist. Lets see if King Henrik can get the job done. Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen.
