The email dropped in my box a few weeks ago. Salvador Perez Royals Jersey . Almost lost it in the endless stream of playoff-related info (Rangers Availability, 5:00pm, JW Marriot) and reminders from Shutterfly about my daughters upcoming soccer practices. This note was from a friend made a few years ago, in the worst possible way you can make a friend. Paul Frustaglio just wanted to let me know they were having a golf tournament on June 26th for his son Evan. "Drop by, if you can make it," he wrote. I couldnt. Would be in Philadelphia for the NHL Draft. So I sent along my regrets and said that Id at least try to get a prize sent over from TSN. "I should have remembered that was draft week," Paul wrote back. "Evan was a 96." Thats the first way every hockey parent describes his/her kid; by their abbreviated birth year. When someone asks,"What is your boy?" We know instantly what they mean. "Oh, hes a 98." There will be a slew of 96s who have their names called Friday night and Saturday in Philadelphia who will remember Evan Frustaglio. He was part of an elite group of Toronto area hockey players growing up. From minor atom on, he battled against top prospects like Sam Bennett, Robby Fabbri, and Josh Ho-Sang. He played on summer teams with Bennett, Sunny Milano and Connor McDavid, next years draft prodigy. When the Grade 8 team from Vaughns Hill Academy, a sport-focused private school north of Toronto, played its opening game in 2008, Evan scored the games first three goals. His linemate Michael Dal Colle, a likely top-five pick Friday, scored the next six. "Evan had sick hands," Dal Colle says, waiting for his luggage at the Philadelphia airport. "He wasnt big but his skill level was off the charts. Great player, great guy. So sad." Evan Frustaglio was 13 when he started to feel sick at a hockey tournament in London. His Mom, Ann-Marie brought him home after the Saturday games, thinking there was no point staying over if he wasnt likely to be better for Sunday. Dont want the flu to spread around a dressing room. And it looked like, felt like, had to be, the flu. Thats what the doctor at the walk-in clinic said Sunday. "Probably just a mild virus... give him lots of fluids." But his parents were worried, and Paul stayed up all night watching him. The next morning, Evan told his Mom he was feeling OK, so she went off to work. Paul took the day off to stay home with Evan, and catch up on sleep. He gave his son a bath, and noticed an odd rash, but couldnt reach his family doctor to ask about it. Evan went back to bed, and Paul left the room briefly. When he called Evans name just a few minutes later, there was no answer. Paul found him sprawled on the bathroom floor, limp. The rest, four years later, is still a painful blur. A panicked 9-1-1 call, the operator giving Paul instructions on how to do CPR, the medics arriving and trying to revive him. Too late. Evan died October 26, 2009, the same day they started giving H1N1 shots to the public. That virus, the one supposed to prey on the vulnerable, the elderly and the very young, had killed a strong, healthy teenage athlete. "It attacked his heart," Paul says. "He was... too healthy. From what they told me, the best laymans way to put it is that his heart literally beat itself to death." Evans death triggered H1N1 hysteria across Canada. Instantly, there were line-ups that queued for hours at immunization clinics. Three thousand came to Evans wake. Hockey people, mostly. Entire teams that played with and against him. Some who did neither. Hockey is like that. I met Paul there. He was remarkable, thanking me and everyone else over and over for coming. The ultimate Canadian, overly polite even when his world was crumbling around him. He proudly showed me the flowers Sidney Crosby had sent. Evan had touched people. You hold on to that to keep you going, I guessed. Doctors would thank Paul for doing interviews, for talking about Evan, for encouraging people to get immunized. That helped him a little too, he supposes. But soon the H1N1 story faded, and the Frustaglios were left to figure out how to continue their lives without their first-born. Theyre still working on it. Evans younger brother Will, a 99, was too young to grasp the loss of his best friend. Its only started to really hit him hard in the last year or two. But hes done remarkably well. He is a top student and athlete at The Hill, his brothers old school, working out everyday in the same gym as Dal Colle. Will got the size gene Evan didnt, and enters his junior draft year as a solid prospect. Any parent who has lost a child tells you the grieving never really ends. But after four years, Paul and Anne-Marie finally felt ready to celebrate Evans memory. So as you read this, The Hill Academy is holding the first Evan Frustaglio Memorial Golf Tournament at The Glen Eagle Golf Club near Bolton, Ontario. The school is naming its gym after Evan. Money raised from the tourney will be used to set up a scholarship, and the plan is to designate a different charity every year to support. Would Evan have been in Philly Friday? Would he have gotten the chance to walk up on that stage and put on some teams sweater and ballcap, while Paul and Anne-Marie and Will and aunts and uncles and friends cheered and cried a little in the stands? Useless hypothetical, I suppose. His size was starting to be an issue by the time he was a teenager, so the odds were probably against him. But with those hands, that skill, and a fearlessness to boot, who knows? A couple of growth spurts... and... maybe. No. Was right the first time. Useless hypothetical. Paul Frustaglio would prefer to celebrate the life his son had, instead of the one that might have been. And so Friday night, he will do what he does every year. "I will watch the draft for sure," he says. "Im sure it will be bittersweet and a little sad this time because it is Evans class. But these kids are great kids. Some of them I watched since they played minor novice in the North York Hockey League. Ill be incredibly happy for all of them." Click here for more information on the golf tournament. According to Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, sources say ownership believes Bylsma lost the team, especially franchise players Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and have favoured his dismissal. Penguins ownership continues to hold meetings that are expected to determine the fate of Bylsma as well as general manager Ray Shero. "I think its a foregone conclusion (that Bylsma will be gone)," TSN Hockeys Bob McKenzie said on TSN Radio 1050. "In the past, Bylsma was seen a as a beloved figure by the Penguins players but I think anything but that is the case right now." The Tribune-Review report indicates that ownership feels Sheros signing of Bylsma to a two-year extension after last years playoff loss to the Boston Bruins in four straight games ties him to hhis head coach. Eric Hosmer Jersey. Sources told the Tribune-Review that if Bylsma needed to be replaced, Shero may suffer the same fate. Bylsma and Shero both have two years remaining on their current deals. "I do believe the reports in Pittsburgh that there is some thought of going deeper than just Bylsma, but I dont know if thats being signed off in terms of general manager Ray Sheros future," McKenzie said. "Is it possible Shero could lose his job? I think its possible. Is it possible that he could end up staying on? I think thats somewhat possible too." Sources told the Tribune-Review the players werent happy with the length of practices, the number of meetings and a general lack of fun atmosphere around the team this season. Specifically, Crosby and Malkin were not happy with the perceived criticism they received from Bylsma during team meetings. The Penguins will hold their final media availability of the season at CONSOL Energy Center on Thursday. MANCHESTER, England - Rio Ferdinand brought his trophy-filled, 12-year stay at Manchester United to an end on Monday by announcing he would be leaving Old Trafford to continue his playing career. Kendrys Morales Jersey . The 35-year-old Ferdinand, who became Englands most expensive player when he joined United from Leeds for 29.1 million pounds in 2002, has not been offered an extension to his contract that expires next month. He suggested, however, that his departure was on his own terms, saying in a statement: "I have thought long and hard over the last few months about my future, and after 12 fantastic years playing, for what I regard, as the best club in the world, I have decided the time is right for me to move on." A tall, elegant, ball-playing defender, Ferdinand made 454 appearances for United — his last coming in the 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday in the final match of the season. He had been marginalized by the club this season, making just 14 appearances. Ferdinand won six league titles, two League Cups, one Champions League and a Club World Cup with United and forged one of Premier Leagues great centre-back partnerships with Nemanja Vidic, who will also leave this summer to join Inter Milan. With left back Patrice Evra soon out of contract, too, whoever comes in as the full-time replacement for fired United manager David Moyes faces a huge task to rebuild the defence. Ferdinand has had injury problems in recent years — particularly with his back — and has been following a strict training regime to extend his career, but he signalled he is not ready to retire. "I am feeling fit and healthy, ready for a new challenge and looking forward to whatever the future holds for me," he added in the statement. While Vidic was afforded an emotional farewell at Old Trafford in his final home match, receiving a memento from club great Bobby Charlton before last weeks Premier League game against Hull and a rousing ovation from Uniteds fans, Ferdinand will leave without any ceremony. Sections of the British media reported Monday that Ferdinand was told in the dressing room after the Southampton match that he wouldnt be offered a new deal. "Circumstances didnt allow for me to say goodbye the way I would have liked," he added in the statement, "but Id like to take this opportunity to thank my teammates, staff, the club and the fans for an unbelievable 12 years that Ill never forget. Winning trophies I dreamed about as a kid came true at this great club." The low point of his spell at United undoubtedly came in 2003 when he was banned for eight months after being found guilty of missing a drugs test. But he will be remembered by United fans as one of Alex Fergusons best defensive purchases, despite his hefty price tag, with Ferdinand breaking the mould for English centre backs with his touch, athleticism and ability to play the ball out of the back. Alexander was released last week by the Edmonton Eskimos, where he spent the past three seasons at safety. He had 121 defensive tackles, five special teams tackles and seven interceptions in 51 regular-season and three playoff games.Eddie Jones says he will consider his reign a failure if he does not guide England to the top of the world rankings. Jones has already made a significant impact on the team having taken charge after last autumns disappointing Rugby World Cup campaign, where England became the first host nation to fail to qualify for the knockout stage. The former Australia coach promptly oversaw Englands first Grand Slam campaign for 13 years and they are now fourth in the world rankings, but he told Sky Sports News HQ the No 1 spot was his objective. Watch our exclusive interview with England head coach Eddie Jones Asked if anything else represented a failure, Jones said: 100 per cent. The reason the RFU appointed me is to change the England national team. The resources and the number of players here demands that England should be number one.If I look at England and look at what they have, then there is no reason we cant be number one, and that is what we should be aiming for. England players celebrate their Grand Slam-clinching victory over France To achieve that goal, England will need to beat southern hemisphere sides consistently and they will get their first opportunity this summer when they travel to Australia for a three-Test series against the Wallabies.Jones cannot wait to lock horns with the side he used to coach and said: I think it is a good opportunity for us.It is obviously a difficult tour but we want to take the next step up. We will give it everything we have got on tour. We need to prepare well and play good rugbby in Australia. George Brett Jersey. David Pocock and Australia lie in wait for England this summer And we want to see the stadium full of white shirts, that would be fantastic for the players.England have won three and lost 14 of their 17 Test matches in Australia and while Jones appreciates the size of the task at hand, believes his players will build on the success of the Six Nations campaign. This is just the start, he said. We have only played possibly two halves of the rugby that we are capable of. Jones thinks Six Nations glory is just the start for England It is great to have these results and I am so pleased for the players and for the fans, because England had a difficult World Cup.The fans have now been rewarded and everyone is feeling a lot better about themselves, but the best is yet to come.We go to Australia and it is going to be a great learning tour for us, a first big tour for a number of our players.Three Tests against Australia is going to sort out the men from the boys. VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps added Uruguayan midfielders/strikers Sebastian Fernandez and Nicolas Mezquida to their roster Wednesday. Deatrich Wise Jr. Youth Jersey . Fernandez joins the Whitecaps on a one-year loan with a transfer option while Mezquida was acquired via transfer, both from Uruguayan side Boston River. Both deals are pending receipt of their International Transfer Certificates, Canadian work permits and visas. "Sebastian and Nicolas are exciting young attacking players with a lot of potential," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a statement. "Both players like to play with the ball on the ground and are not afraid to attack defenders one-on-one with pace." Fernandez, 24, joins the Whitecaps after capturing the 2013 Peruvian Primera Division championship with Universitario de Deportes while on loan from Liga MX side Chiapas FC. The five-foot-seven 165-pound Fernandez scored five times in 26 appearances for Universitario, with two of those goals coming in the playoffs. Mezquida, 22, comes to Vancouver having last been a member of Uruguayan Primera Division side Centro Atletico Fenix. The five-foot-six, 150-pound Mezquida joined Fenix in March 2012 and played parts of two seasons with the club. Canadian university students who want to play sports such as football and hockey will be required this fall to waive their right

Posted in IYH Forums by jokergreen0220 at 08:32, Sep 26 2017

Canadian university students who want to play sports such as football and hockey will be required this fall to waive their right to privacy if their names are uncovered by law enforcement authorities during drug busts. Gareon Conley Youth Jersey . Under the current legal landscape, when law enforcement staff seize steroids and other banned substances that are being smuggled into Canada at border points or through the mail, the Canada Border Services Agency is typically not allowed to disclose information to the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport about who has ordered the drugs because of privacy legislation. The privacy laws handicap the CCES in its investigations, staff say. TSN has learned that the CISs board has unanimously endorsed a request from CCES chief executive Paul Melia that some university athletes be required to sign a waiver that would allow law enforcement officials to disclose their identities if they are discovered to be involved with importing banned substances. The CISs 11-member board approved the motion unanimously, CIS executive director Pierre Lafontaine told TSN. CCES chief executive Paul Melia said the consent waivers are just one of the ways the CCES is trying to improve its policing of drug use in Canadian sport. The CCES also has two full-time staffers recently dedicated to intelligence gathering, has purchased computer software to cross-reference the names of athletes on other information databases, and has requested briefings with anti-doping authorities in the U.K. and Australia, asking how they manage their own investigations. Melia said the CCES has also started to ask Canadian universities for information such as speed and strength test data. Player sprint times and bench press results might tip authorities off to drug use, if the results improve appreciably from one year to the next. Melia said having athletes sign a consent agreement would help his staff gather information about steroid trafficking far more quickly. If there is a seizure at the border by CBSA and they lay charges and there is a conviction then the names of those convicted will become public, he said. In many instances, though, seizures are made and charges not necessarily laid. More important, the seizures often also include client lists, distribution lists and destination points for distribution, all of which would be of enormous interest to the CCES. Similarly, the police might conduct a drug bust and only pursue charges against certain individuals and their activities related to the so-called hard drugs like heroin and ecstasy even though steroids and human growth hormone might have been involved. Again, computer lists of names, clients, customers might be part of what is seized but not available to us under the current conditions. Athletes who compete in Olympic and Paralympic sports already are being given the consent agreements to sign. The agreement, part of the 2015 Canadian Anti-Doping Program, reads: I consent to having police and law enforcement agencies, border services agencies, Sport Organizations of which I am a member and sporting clubs and athletic associations to which I belong, in Canada and elsewhere, disclose my personal information to the CCES to assist the CCES in the enforcement of the CADP. For the purpose of this consent, the term personal information means information relating to an identifiable individual that is recorded in any form. Melia said hes not looking immediately to secure the consent of every Canadian university athlete. We have to balance the cost and practicality of securing athlete consent, Melia told TSN. We will certainly be focusing on the high risk sports and football is at the top of the list...we will certainly be looking at hockey carefully. Melia said that while the signed consents would allow CCES to have conversations with law enforcement agencies, including border service, theres no legal framework that would compel those agencies to assist the CCES. The CCES and CIS have been discussing the consent form for athletes weeks after police in Alberta seized nearly $10 million worth of steroids in a string of raids at five locations in Edmonton. At that time, police confirmed the CCES was investigating whether those steroid dealers sold banned performance-enhancing drugs to professional or amateur athletes across the country. Four people were arrested in what authorities say is the biggest illegal steroid seizure ever by Canadian police, who took into custody 350,000 tablets, 10,500 vials and 124 kilograms worth of raw steroid powder. Police have not presented evidence that any college or university athletes bought illegal steroids from the Edmonton criminal ring and in Canada, it is not illegal to possess steroids, but it is illegal to import them or possess them for the purpose of trafficking. The Edmonton bust came months after three top Canadian college football prospects tested positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs at a CFL-sanctioned training camp. Critics have called college football in Canada a Wild West where players game the system without fear of being caught. Thats because there are 11,000 athletes competing in Canadian university sports, but only enough money to administer 200 drug tests per year. In 2010, the University of Waterloo suspended its football program after a wave of players were discovered using steroids. There was a brief period when drug testing across Canada increased, but it has since reversed course. Led by home runs from Jake Blackwood and Ray Sadler, the Goldeyes defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 7-6 Saturday at Haymarket Park. The win moves Winnipegs exhibition record to 3-1 after losing to Lincoln Friday night. The second batter of the game, Blackwood cracked a solo home run to left field to give Winnipeg their first lead of the two-game weekend series at 1-0. After Lincoln fought back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Goldeyes retook the lead in the top of the second inning. With two out, Ryan Pineda and Luis Alen singled. Designated hitter Amos Ramon doubled to score Pineda and Webb followed with a double of his own to plate Alen and Ramon, giving the Goldeyes a 4-2 lead. "They didnt give up on the inning," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said on the Jewel 101 post-game show. "A two-out rally hurts the other team, too. You get two quick outs, but youre able to still put three runs on the board. Thats good to see out of your hitters." Winnipeg extended the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Ray Sadler hit a two-out, two-run homme run, putting the Goldeyes up 6-2. Samson Ebukam Youth Jersey. Lincoln replied with a run in the fourth inning off Winnipeg starting pitcher Chris Salamida and then tied game 6-6 when they victimized Kyle Anderson for three runs with two out in the sixth inning. The Goldeyes scratched around the game-winning run an inning later when Alen led off the seventh inning with a single and eventually scored on a Blackwood sac fly. After Anderson, Brendan Lafferty, Chris Kissock and Kyle Bellamy allowed a combined two hits in the last three innings. "Thats exactly what we are looking for out of them," Vermilyea said. "If we get our starters to go six or seven innings, we have the guys in the back end of the bullpen that can shut the door." Anderson earned the win for Winnipeg to improve to 1-0 in exhibition play, while Bellamy earned his first save. The five pitchers took the ball for Winnipeg in the game combined for 10 strikeouts. Ramon led Winnipeg with a three-for-four afternoon at the plate. He also scored two runs and drove in a run. Blackwood, Sadler and Webb all had two RBI. As Major League Soccer prepares to lift the curtain on another season, TSN.ca presents the second of our five part season preview, taking a look at the American based teams in the Western Conference. Chivas USA In 2013, Chivas USA took their usual spot at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. In fact, the only year since 2010 where anyone finished behind them was in 2011 when they managed to finish one place ahead of the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps. Former Colorado Rapids assistant coach Wilmer Cabrera will be the latest man charged with bringing chaos to order at Los Angeles second MLS team that very recently also became owned by the league with an eye on a new name and logo. Veteran Midfielder Mauro Rosales will be counted on to create and drive the offence while new defensive acquisition Andrew Jean-Baptiste will hope to improve a defence that easily allowed the most goals last season. As always, Chivas has a long way to go before they are considered contenders for anything, but at least theyve finally taken a positive step in the right direction. Chivas will open the season by welcoming the Chicago Fire to the StubHub Center on March 9th. They will face their first Canadian opponent in their second game when they host the Vancouver Whitecaps on March 16th. Whos In?: M Mauro Rosales (trade from Seattle), D Andrew Jean-Baptiste (trade from Portland), F Adolfo Bautista (free agent), D Tony Lochhead (free agent), D Andrew Ribeiro (free agent), D Fejiro Okiomah (free agent), D Donny Toia (free agent), M Agustín Pelletieri (free agent), F Luke Moore (free agent), F Eriq Zavaleta (loan from Seattle) Whos Out?: D Mario de Luna (end of loan from CD Guadalajara), D Jaime Frias (end of loan from CD Guadalajara), M Edgar Mejía (end of loan from CD Guadalajara), F Julio Morales (end of loan from CD Guadalajara), GK Patrick McLain (option declined), D Steve Purdy (option declined), D Daniel Antunez (option declined), M Marvin Iraheta (option declined), M Josue Soto (option declined), F José Manuel Rivera (option declined), F Tristan Bowen (traded to Seattle), D Jorge Villafaña (traded to Portland), M Gabriel Farfan (loaned to Chiapas), M Carlo Chueca (waived), F Bryan de la Fuente (waived) SuperDraft: M Thomas McNamara (2-20) Colorado Rapids Pablo Mastroeni enters the season in the rare position of being an interim head coach at the beginning of a campaign. The team that he inherits, one that he partially played on last season, was one of the surprise stories of 2013, forcing their way into the Western Conference playoffs. Gabriel Torres, the first designated player in franchise history, will be counted on to provide offence along with returning leading scorer Deshorn Brown and Edson Buddle. The Rapids were a team that counted on youth, speed and quick transitions from midfield to forward in order to generate the offence they needed to win games. If any of their young players take a step back this season they could lose a step themselves, and be on the outside looking in at the Western Conference playoff picture. Colorado opens the season on the road against the New York Red Bulls on March 15th after enjoying a first week bye. They will play their first Canadian team on April 5th when they travel to BC Place to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps. Whos in?: D/M Marc Burch (Re-Entry Stage 1), M Marvin Chávez (trade from San Jose), GK Joe Nasco (free agent) Whos out?: D Diego Calderón (loan expired), M Jaime Castrillón (option declined), GK Steward Ceus (option declined), M Jamie Smith (option declined), M/D Anthony Wallace (free agent), F Atiba Harris (traded to San Jose), M Jamie Smith (retired), M Tony Cascio (loaned to Houston), M Hendry Thomas (traded to FC Dallas), D Kory Kindle (retired) SuperDraft: M Marlon Hairston (1-12), D Grant Van De Casteele (1-19) FC Dallas In his first year in charge of the team, long time FC Dallas assistant, and most recently head coach of the Colorado Rapids, Oscar Pareja will be charged with getting the Texas based squad back into the playoff conversation. Forward Blas Pérez is the most talented player in the squad and will be the man central to the FC Dallas attack on most nights. The team has struggled when he has been absent or ineffective so keeping him healthy and in the squad is a major priority for Pareja. Where FC Dallas is going to struggle is on defence, where they have trouble keeping their best players on the field. If they can keep George John and Walker Zimmerman in one piece throughout the year, that should go a long way to locking down their back line. FC Dallas opens the campaign with their first game against a Canadian based MLS team when they lock up with the Montreal Impact at Toyota Stadium on March 8th. Whos in?: M Ryan Hollingshead (2013 SuperDraft), M Adam Moffat (trade from Seattle), M Brian Span (weighted lottery), M Hendry Thomas (traded from Colorado), F Andrés Escobar (loan from Dynamo Kiev), F David Texeira (transfer from FC Groningen) Whos out?: M David Ferreira (option declined), M Ramon Nuñez (option declined), M Erick (option declined), M Jackson (traded to Toronto), M Victor Ulloa (out of contract), D Ugo Ihemelu (option declined), F Kenny Cooper (traded to Seattle), M Bobby Warshaw (transferred to GIAS), F Bradlee Baladez (waived), GK Kyle Zobeck (waived) SuperDraft: F Tesho Akindele (1-6) Los Angeles Galaxy The two-time defending MLS Cup champions were finally unseated last season when they lost to eventual runner up Real Salt Lake in the opening round of the playoffs. No doubt, the Galaxy return one of the most talented teams in the entire league, with both Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan at the forefront of the attack. With Keane no longer involved in international play and no drama as to when Donovan is going to join the squad, Bruce Arenas team should be able to hit the ground running from the first kick of the season. Sean Franklin is going to be a loss felt in the Galaxy defence, as he was one of the key members on their championship squads but they have depth at every position and will be one of the teams to watch once again this season. The Los Angeles Galaxy will open the 2014 season on March 8th in a battle of the last two Western Conference champions when they host Real Salt Lake at the StubHub Center. They will play a Canadian team for the first time when they face Vancouver Whitecaps on April 12th. Whos in?: M Baggio Husidic (free agent), F Samuel (loan from Fluminense), F Rob Friend (free transfer), M Stefan Ishizaki (free transfer) Whos out?: M Colin Clark (option declined), M Laurent Courtois (option declined), D Sean Frranklin (option declined), M Michael Stephens (out of contract), GK Carlo Cudicini (contract terminated), M Pablo Mastroeni (retired), F Jose Villarreal (loaned to Cruz Azul), M Hector Jimenez (traded to Columbus), M Kyle Nakazawa (retired), D Bryan Gaul (waived), D Greg Cochrane (trade to Chicago) SuperDraft: --- Portland Timbers A hot stretch through April, May and June allowed the Timbers to secure first place in the Western Conference last season and raise the expectation of what they could do in the playoffs. Scott Feldman Jersey. nbsp; Sadly their season of promise ended in the Western Conference Final. The hiring of head coach Caleb Porter has been credited with turning things around for Portland and if thats the case, his next job will solidifying the squad and proving that their improvement in form was more than just a one season aberration. Canadian midfielder Will Johnson will once again be key to the backbone of the squad and his ability to influence the game in both ends is important to the Timbers overall game plan. Portland opens the season with a pair of home games, including their March 8th debut against the Philadelphia Union. They will play host to the Vancouver Whitecaps on June 1st, the first Canadian team on their schedule. Whos in?: D Jorge Villafaña (trade from Chivas USA), M Steve Zakuani (Re-Entry Stage 1), GK Andrew Weber (free agent), F Gastón Fernández (transfer from Estudiantes de La Plata), D Norberto Paparatto (transfer from Tigre) Whos out?: D David Horst (option declined), D Ryan Miller (option declined), D Dylan Tucker-Gangnes (waived), F Brent Richards (waived), F Ryan Johnson (out of contract), D Brad Ring (out of contract), D Andrew Jean-Baptiste (traded to Chivas USA), M Sal Zizzo (traded to Sporting KC), D David Horst (traded to Houston), F Sebastián Rincón (loan expired), F José Valencia (loaned to Club Olimpo), GK Milos Kocic (retired), D Mikaël Silvestre (contract terminated) SuperDraft: M/F Schillo Tshuma (1-17) Real Salt Lake Three points from winning the Supporters Shield, one penalty kick short in the MLS Cup, and falling in the U.S. Cup Final, near misses defined a very successful season for Real Salt Lake, if you ignore the final outcomes. Assistant coach Jeff Cassar has now taken over the head coaching duties from long time bench boss Jason Kreis who left the club in the offseason to lead 2015 expansion side New York City FC. Cassars job will be to keep one of the older rosters in the league happy and healthy while continuing the great work his predecessor started. To help him achieve that goal, hell be able to lean captain Kyle Beckerman, striker Alvaro Saborio, Nick Rimando and defender Nat Borchers, all veterans that should be steady for the defending Western Conference champions. Real Salt Lake will open their season against LA Galaxy on March 8th and see their first Canadian action March 29th when they welcome Toronto FC to Rio Tinto Stadium. Whos in?: M Luke Mulholland (free agent) Whos out?: M Yordany Álvarez (out of contract), D Brandon McDonald (out of contract), GK Josh Saunders (out of contract), M Khari Stephenson (out of contract), D/M Lovel Palmer (traded to Chicago) SuperDraft: --- San Jose Earthquakes After as near a playoff miss as you can have in 2013, the San Jose Earthquakes are poised to make a run this season, but will only go as far as Chris Wondolowski can take them. After earning himself a new deal with a huge season in 2012, he played hurt last year and it showed in his end of the year totals. The continued improvement of Sam Cronin will be important to the Earthquakes regaining their spot as one of the best teams in the West. They have the talent to compete and it would be a surprise to see them not able to translate that back onto the field. San Jose Earthquakes will begin the 2014 season against Real Salt Lake on March 15th and will play their first Canadian opposition on May 3rd when they visit BC Place to take on Vancouver Whitecaps. Koval (1-9) Seattle Sounders Despite the acquisition of Clint Dempsey, Seattle Sounders failed to achieve the success they were looking for last season. They remain one of the leagues most consistent franchises and will once again be in the playoff picture this season. How far they go beyond that will come down to the play of Dempsey and how well he gels with Kenny Cooper and Obafemi Martins as well as the kind of havoc they can create in the opponents third of the field. If the rumours of infighting during the tail end of last season are true and continue, the Sounders could be trending towards the bottom for the first time in franchise history. Seattle opens the season with a pair of home games, including their first Canadian matchup. They open the season at CenturyLink Field against the defending MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City on March 8th and then welcome Toronto FC on March 15th before heading to Montreal to play the Impact on March 22nd. Saskatchewan pair skaters Paige Lawrence, 24, Kennedy, Sask. Deshaun Watson Womens Jersey ., and Rudi Swiegers, 26, Kipling, Sask., have ended their nine-year partnership. Lawrence and Swiegers achieved a lifelong dream of being Olympians earlier this year when they competed at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Lawrence and Swiegers are four-time Canadian bronze medalists (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). In 2010 they won their first international medal, a bronze at Skate Canada International. That same season they also won the bronze medal at the 2011 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. The team trained in Virden, Manitoba with coach Patricia Hole and in Florida with Lyndon Johnston. In 2014 they qualified to compete for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi and placed 14th. They then went on to place 12th at the 2014 ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Japan. "Im so thankful for all the opportunities and adventures that Rudi and I have had the chance to experience throughout our nine-year career together. It was amazing to fulfill our dream of competing at the Olympics and world championships and I have never been happier than I was while skating those programs," said Lawrence. "We have reached a point now where we both want different things and I wish Rudi all the health, happiness, and continued success in whatever path he follows." Lawrence continued, "I would like to say thank you to my coaches Patty Hole and Lyndon Johnston for their unwavering commitment and belief in us, my support team back home for always being there for me, and to all our fans for cheering us on and sharing in this incredible journey. I am so grateful!" Lawrence is looking to find a new partner and continue skating but is keeping an open mind to whatever life may throw her way. "Im so glad to have had the opportunity to skate with Paige and represent Saskatchewan nationally and internationally. One of my greatest joys is that weve been able to succeed and achieve our goals while staying true to our small town roots; proving that you dont need to move away to large centers to train," said Swiegers. "Id like to personally thank Patricia Hole and Lyndon Johnston for everything they have done for me, untold hours on and off the ice. Their dedication to me as a person and an athlete has been paramount in making me the man I am today." Swiegers finished, "I am truly grateful for all the sport has given me. This isnt goodbye for me but rather see you later!" Swiegers is taking a year off from competitive skating for personal reasons. Sonnen said he tested positive for two banned substances in a random test last month. The three-time UFC title contender is likely to face a suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Sonnen attempted to defend himself Tuesday, claiming he took anastrozole and clomiphene as part of his move off testosterone replacement therapy, which was outlawed by Nevada regulators earlier this year. Sonnen had an exemption allowing his steroid use, but gave up TRT after it was banned. "They changed the rules, and Ive got to comply with the rules," Sonnen told Fox Sports, the UFCs television partner. "However, there is a transition period (after dropping TRT), and I couldnt have been more open or more transparent." The 37-year-old Sonnen (28-14-1) said he plans to appeal the commissions decision next week, even though he acknowledged knowing the two substances were on the Nevada commissions banned list. Sonnen said his doctor put him on the banned substances to bolster his natural testosterone production, which can be stunted by taking synthetic testosterone. He also believes he should be allowed to take the substances out of competition, even though theyre banned precisely to prevent athletes from using them to gain an unfair advantage in preparation for an event. "An athlete does not have to remain off of medication 365 days a year," Sonnen said. "If theyre asking me to choose between my health and my sport, thats not a choice I can make. Ive got to choose health." UFC President Dana White blamed both the Nevada commission and Sonnen while addressing the failed test on Fox Sports. White spoke out against TRT earlier this year, shortly before the Nevada commission banned it and many other commissions followed suit. "This thing has been bad sincee Day 1," White said. Julién Davenport Jersey. "I wish that the commission had never let anybody use TRT, and when it went away, they didnt do a very good job of figuring out how to get these guys off it. When you get off it, you dont just go cold turkey. "And its Chaels fault, too, because Chael should have called the athletic commission and said, This is what my doctor told me I need to do to come down off this stuff, so heres what Ive been taking." Sonnen had lost three of his past four fights heading into his July 5 bout with Belfort, another former TRT user. While never a champion, Sonnen is among the UFCs most prominent figures, serving as a studio analyst, commentator and reality show coach for the UFCs broadcast platforms while also continuing his fighting career. Sonnen also had high levels of testosterone in his system after his thrilling loss to middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 in Oakland, California, in 2010. He received a suspension for failing to get an exemption for TRT in California. Sonnens latest drug mishap is another bizarre turn for UFC 175, which has endured numerous changes and strange circumstances. Belfort only got a spot on the pay-per-view card at the Mandalay Bay Events Center when Wanderlei Silva skipped a drug test last month and dropped out of his scheduled bout with Sonnen, who harshly criticized Silva on television for missing the test. Belfort used TRT for at least his last three fights, all won by spectacular knockout in his native Brazil. He dropped out of a scheduled fight with UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman in late February on the same day the Nevada commission banned TRT. Belfort says he has since stopped using steroids. He is scheduled to appear at a licensing hearing with the Nevada commission next week. UFC 175 is headlined by Weidmans title defence against Lyoto Machida and bantamweight champion Ronda Rouseys fourth title defence against Alexis Davis. At each quarter of the regular season, I will produce two teams of analytics all-stars. Sean Rodriguez Jersey . Ultimately, the goal with this mini-series is to capture great player performance. Sometimes, there will be obvious overlap between players with great counting numbers and great underlying numbers. Other times, I’ll include players who I think deserve significantly more attention than they’re receiving. FIRST TEAM L – Daniel Sedin, Vancouver Canucks I’m always impressed with players well over the age of thirty who are still caving in the opposition with frequency, mostly because the aging process – even for elite hockey talent – makes that an increasingly difficult accomplishment. The argument in support of Daniel Sedin is the same as it ever was. He, along with common linemate Henrik Sedin, have again come together to form one of the league’s most dynamic top lines. Vancouver’s scoring 57% of the goals and controlling about 56% of play with the twins on the ice at 5-on-5. They’re doing it the same way they have always done it – Henrik Sedin’s largely the setup guy and distributor in the middle of the ice, and Daniel Sedin’s the shot-generating maniac on the wing. The other team infrequently has the puck when they’re on the ice, and as you might have guessed, it creates situations where scoring against the twins is relatively impossible. Unfortunately, there are separate parameters for evaluation here. Daniel Sedin’s compared to other left wingers, and Henrik Sedin’s compared to other centers. So, while performance may be virtually identical and indiscernible away from ‘this guy passes’ and ‘this guy shoots’, Daniel Sedin finds a spot on our team. Henrik Sedin? He’ll have to wait for the mid-season review. C – Patrice Bergeron, Boston Bruins I think there’s a decent case to be made that Patrice Bergeron’s the second-best player in the world after Sidney Crosby, though guys like Steven Stamkos, Anze Kopitar, and Jonathan Toews are definitely in the mix. Ten years ago, I don’t know if Bergeron’s evaluated the same way as he is now. It’s a great testament as to why Corsi% can further capture excellent player performance, especially on the defensive side on things. Often times while watching games, we get caught up in the forward (or defenseman) making the diving poke check, or getting off a thunderous hit in the defensive zone. That, certainly, is defense. But, over thousands and thousands of repetitions, defense is really just about consistently putting yourself in a position where you only need to make the unbelievable play on rare occasion. That’s what Patrice Bergeron does. Over, and over, and over. He’s a relentless forechecker, a player never caught out of his tight position in the neutral zone, and a guy who defends with vigor in the defensive third. This year’s been virtually identical by Corsi% dominance standards – Boston’s controlling 59% of the 5-on-5 play with Bergeron on the ice, though that number drops to 51% when he’s off. This year is different on one front, though – Patrice Bergeron doesn’t have a rock to lean on in Zdeno Chara due to injury. For most Bruins skaters in the past, Chara’s been the guy propping them up. For Patrice Bergeron, that’s really never been the case – in years past, or in 2014-2015. The Chara Effect YEAR Bergeron/Chara Together Bergeron Without Chara Chara Without Bergeron 2007-14 57.6% 56.3% 53.7% 2014-15 57.8% 59.4% 55.8% The analytics community has long held up Zdeno Chara as one of the league’s most extraordinary of talents. Withstanding Sidney Crosby, I’m not sure there’s been a more terrifying player since the 2004 lockout. What does that say about Patrice Bergeron, a guy who consistently exhibits the ability to excel with or without Zdeno Chara on the ice? R – Jakub Voracek, Philadelphia Flyers Philadelphia’s a lot like Calgary in that the gap between their top-group and the rest of their team is the size of the Grand Canyon. Part of that is because there’s virtually zero competent depth on the roster. Part of it is because the top group has unique, game-changing talent – Calgary’s is the Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie defensive pairing, and Philadelphia’s is the forward duo of Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux. Giroux’s the perfect pivot for Voracek, but Voracek’s making the most of the opportunity again this season. Through nineteen games, Voracek’s second in per-60 scoring at 3.9, trailing only youngster Ryan Strome of the New York Islanders. A lot of his scoring is embedded in his high frequency individual shooting rates – this year, just a recurrence of what he’s established in years past. The on-ice rate numbers with Voracek are impressive, too. With Voracek on the ice, Philadelphia’s in the black +1.6 goals per 60 minutes, +13.1 shot-attempts per 60 minutes. Now, if only Philadelphia’s second, third, and fourth lines could replicate what Voracek and company are doing. D – Ryan Ellis, Nashville Predators Here is a comprehensive list of NHL defensemen with a better Corsi% than Ryan Ellis through the first quarter of the season: Jonas Brodin. End list. A lot of smart people have pointed to a lot of different reasons why Nashville’s so improved this season, and I think each argument has some merit. Coaching influence – Peter Laviolette’s hyper-aggressive neutral zone system, in particular – seems to fit the roster beautifully. A bunch of smart, cheap signings by David Poile gave him the arsenal to enact such a strategy. And the growth of younger forwards like Colin Wilson, Filip Forsberg, Craig Smith, and so on have given the team plenty of attacking options. The improvement of the blue line cannot be overlooked, though. The young defenders are finally starting to put together sequences of favorable offensive zone time, and it’s turned Nashville into a legitimate playoff contender. Chief among those improvements have been with Ryan Ellis. Now, the Ellis/Mattias Ekholm pairing are certainly receiving favorable usage – they’re starting 57% of their shifts in the offensive zone, and by most quality of competition standards, they’re getting the softest minutes. But, it’s important to remember that there are many, many, many other defenders getting comparable zone starts and competition – none of whom are playing as strongly as Ellis. I pulled out some deployment comparables for Ryan Ellis, and have noted the Relative Corsi% for each defenseman -- or, the difference in the shot-attempts a team receives with a player on the ice versus the shot-attempts a player receives with a player off of the ice. You’ll quickly notice that one of these players is not like the others. Zone Start Comparables PLAYER Off. Zone Start % QualComp (Corsi) RelativeCorsi% Mark Streit 59.3% +0.24 +5.6% Brent Seabrook 58.4% -0.24 -2.6% Tim Erixon 58.1% +0.19 +4.5% Ryan Ellis 57.8% -0.25 +11.84% Jason Garrison 57.7% +0.58% +0.51% Kevin Shattenkirk 57.5% -0.16 +5.41% Torey Krug 56.8% -0.26 +0.11% Tyson Barrie 56.5% -0.64 +4.33% Michal Rozsival 55.8% -0.12 -0.09% This is sort of a random spread of talent, but I think it does well to illustrate just how dominant Ellis has been in those lofty offensive zone minutes – even compared against guys who are enjoying similar usage rates. D – Nick Leddy, New York Islanders I think there’s going to be an interesting debate – if one plagued in hindsight – about whether Chicago made the right move in dealing Nick Leddy to the New York Islanders, theoretically to preserve a player like Johnny Oduya. Leddy’s underlying numbers are sparkling. He’s played most of his minutes with Johnny Boychuk, and the two have formed one of the league’s most effective pairings through the quarter season mark. How is he doing it? Well, part of it may be attributed to his excellence in the neutral zone, something recently discussed by Garik16 at Lighthouse Hockey. Click through, and you’ll find that Leddy’s sort of a carry-in extraordinaire – a player who refuses to dump the puck in as he comes through the neutral zone, and perhaps not surprisingly, a player that tows a ridiculous 60% Corsi% on the year. G – Jonathan Quick, LA Kings This year’s been a bizarre one in Los Angeles. It’s the first time in what feels like forever that Darryl Sutter’s club, at least at even-strength, has struggled to control play. It’s an issue we talked about last week, and one that warrants further investigation. The middling performance would’ve probably crippled the Kings in the standings, had it not been for consistently strong goaltending – another unexpected development. It’s odd considering his reputation, but there are very legitimate criticisms about Jonathan Quick and his consistent mediocrity at stopping shots. Despite a glowing reputation, Quick’s usually paled in comparison to the league’s elite on the save percentage front, drawing the ire of many from the analytics community. But this year, when his team has really needed it more than ever before, he’s been sensational. Among regular goaltenders, Jonathan Quick ranks #4 in EVSV% at .939, trailing only Brian Elliott, Pekka Rinne, and Roberto Luongo. Expand the sample of data to account for all shots faced (primarily those on the penalty kill), and Quick moves to the top of the SV% list at .931. Based on the years and years of data we have, one should be cynical about Jonathan Quick’s ability to maintain such impressive splits. But, to his credit, he’s been sensational this season, and probably the biggest reason why the Kings are still pulling a playoff-caliber point-per-game pace. SECOND TEAM L – Ondrej Palat, Tampa Bay Lightning C – Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins R – Vladimir Tarasenko, St. Louis Blues D – Zbynek Michalek, Arizona Coyotes D – Mark Giordano, Calgary Flames G – Michal Neuvirth, Buffalo Sabres Barry Bonds Jersey .C. - The Panthers will be without starting defensive tackle Star Lotulelei for Saturday nights NFC divisional playoff game against Seattle after undergoing surgery Wednesday to repair a broken bone in his foot. Particularly when speaking in the stadium of Tuesdays opponent: Manchester City. David Lee added 16 points and Draymond Green had 14 points and six rebounds for the Warriors, who followed up their 100-95 win over the Lakers in Beijing on Tuesday with another victory. Shanghai natiive Yao Ming, who watched the game courtside, got a huge cheer from the crowd before the game, but the loudest ovation went to the injured Kobe Bryant when he joined the Lakers bench in the fourth quarter. Josh Harrison Jersey. Bryant is sitting out the start of the season as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon. Pau Gasol was the only Lakers player in double digits, scoring 16 points. Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork. Taylor Moton Womens Jersey .com) - Alex Smith threw two touchdown passes and the Kansas City Chiefs handed the New York Jets their eighth straight defeat with a 24-10 victory. Smith completed 21-of-31 passes for 199 yards for the Chiefs (5-3), who have won three in a row. I think this team has a lot of confidence right now, we feel like weve been playing good football and taking the right steps in the right direction these last few weeks, said Smith. Every week, youre going out and doing whatever it takes to get a W. They all look different. None of them are the same, but thats the goal, to go out there and compete there. Jamaal Charles carried 20 times for 78 yards and a score for Kansas City. Travis Kelce and Anthony Fasano each caught a touchdown pass from Smith. Michael Vick connected on 21-of-28 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown in his first start as a member of the Jets (1-, who have lost eight in a row for the first time since opening 0-8 in 1996. He left the game briefly in the fourth quarter after taking a hard hit and slamming his head on the ground. Geno Smith had been New Yorks starting quarterback in all 24 games since he was drafted in the second round of last years draft. He was benched last week against the Bills after throwing three interceptions in the first quarter and inactive this week with a shoulder injury, with Jets head coach Rex Ryan making the switch to Vick on Monday. Ryan said after Sundays loss that Vick will start next week against Pittsburgh. Percy Harvin caught 11 passes for 129 yards in his second game as a Jet. Eric Decker hauled in nine passes for 63 yards and a score. Well this team, I think you miss judged the character if you think that losses is the only thing that identifies this team, said Ryan. This team is made up of characters and these are mighty men. I hope like hell that we dont have to endure many more, but we will if that is the case. The Chiefs got the ball to start the game and put together a 12-play, 81-yard drive. DeAnthony Thomas 26-yard scamper helped set up Charles 1-yard TD run. After New York went three-and-out, Kansas City added to its lead. Kelces 34-yard catch on the first play put the Chiefs in prime position. On 1st-and-goal from the 2-yard line later on, Alex Smith threw a pass that was deflected by linebacker Calvin Pace. The ball caromed into the hands of Fasano, who was sitting on the ground near the goal line. Fasano was able to twist his body into the end zone for a touchdown. Vick and the Jets finally got some offense going in the second quarter. New York converted a trio of third downs on a 15-play, 81-yard drive that Decker capped with a 3-yard TD catch. The score cut the gap to 14-7 with 2:09 left in the half. Thomas returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards to the New York 29-yard line. Just four plays later, Kelce caught a 12-yard TD pass. The Jets managed to get three points back before the break thanks to Harvins 65-yard return on the following kickoff, with Nick Folks 39-yard field goal making the score 21-10. Kansas Citys defense then held New York scoreless in the second half. The Chiefs first possession of the second half resulted in a 19-yard Cairo Santos field goal. Kansas City again converted a trio of third downs and moved to the 1-yard line, but failed to punch the ball into the end zone. Vick moved the Jets to the Kansas City 3-yard line early in the fourth quarter. On 4th-and-goal, he took a hard hit from Josh Mauga as his pass fell incomplete. Vicks head bounced off the ground and he was taken to the locker room. My head hit the ground but I was alright, said Vick. Initially, I was dinged for a minute but I respect the NFL rules and the concussion protocol. I went in and took all the appropriate steps and I was able to pass all the tests. Backup quarterback Matt Simms, promoted from the practice squad on Saturday, was forced to play one series before Vick returned. New York turned the ball over on downs on Simms lone drive. Game Notes Vick faced the same man -- Andy Reid -- who famously gave him a second chance in the NFL. Vick was the Eagles full-time starter from 2010-12 under Reid, who is now the head coach of the Chiefs ... Chris Johnson carried 11 times for 69 yards for the Jets ... Simms completed 3-of-8 passes for 39 yards. Curtis Samuel Jersey . Lineup news, Fantasy and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking. Most diminutive players are forced to take the long road to NHL arenas, if they get there at all. Ben Gedeon Jersey . The Habs Brendan Gallagher waited until the fifth round to hear his name called at the 2010 draft. Teammate David Desharnais never heard his name called and needed to ply his trade in the ECHL before the Habs took notice and signed him as a free agent. Mike Weaver was similarly undrafted. Brian Gionta and Tomas Plekanec went in the third round of their respective drafts. St. Louis was passed over by midget teams, ironically, ignored by the QMJHL, undrafted, signed by the Flames but later bought out after being exposed and unselected during the 2000 expansion draft, signed by Tampa Bay, and then became a surefire first ballot Hall of Famer, Stanley Cup winner, and Olympic gold medalist. But too small to play in this mans NHL, for sure.(h/tNational Post)If smaller skaters are in tough against the closed-mindedness of hockeys front offices, then life is near impossible for wee goalies. If the hockey community had its way, Dustin Tokarski would be working the take-out window at a Tim Hortons in Saskatchewan. At 511, he is everything the scouts are not looking for in a goalie. He is not the prototype. He is not Carey Price. Tampa Bay scout Charlie Hodge (himself a small, 56, NHL goaltender who accomplished nothing in the league with his limited stature other than six Stanley Cups and two Vezinas) had to beg the Lightning to draft Tokarski in the fifth round. And while, despite Montreal folklores contention, the legend of Tokarski is still being written, his play in the Eastern Conference Final is argument for a less structured approach to the game in both drafting and roster building. In a league that clings desperately to intangibles like "grit", "sandpaper", and "hockey sense", its laughable that they ignore these very qualities in players simply because they couldnt look Chris Pronger in the eye if standing on a barstool. And perhaps its the fact that they are ignored that makes them the players they are, products of adversity. More likely its a lack of ambition and creativity in front offices, which denies ambitious and creative players the opportunity to play in the league, and to better the game. The argument in favour of a broader notion of what makes an NHLer is on the ice this postseason, and in particular in the Rangers-Habs series and their respective runs to the Conference Final. Desharnais has been arguably Montreals best forward, if not their most consistent. Gallagher is proving that strength comes from within, and not gigantism. Tokarski has gone from relative obscurity to revelation. Weaver is more adept at blocking shots than Peter Budaj. Sixth-rounder Hagelin is proving to be perhaps the fastest skater in the league. Zucarello, affectionately nicknamed the Hobbit, is a force with his speed and creativity. And the grandfather of them all, St. Louis, is authoring a tale for the ages, the kind of postseason story that makes the playoffs so compelling.(h/t 5 Minutes For Fighting)Maurice Richard, Bobby Hull and son Brett were 510. Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr were measured at 6, but they were wearing their shoes. Guy Lafleur was also listed at 6, but at least two of those inches were hair. At some point during the 90s, when scouting staffs inflated and Eric Lindros arrived, the NHL experienced a sea change in philosophy. They became infatuated with size and believed they could manufacture skill and scoring through systems. The result was lower scoring, issues with concussions, and endless tinkering with rules in order to create the very scoring that they themselves had diluted. In witnessing one of the most entertaining and compelling postseasons in recent memory, one hopes that the NHL can again changes its ways, and value skill no matter what size the package it comes in. When Kiffins Trojans trudged home to that same airport early Sunday morning after another loss, athletic director Pat Haden couldnt wait another minute to end the divisive coachs tumultuous tenure. USC fired Kiffin hours after a 62-41 loss at Arizona State that dropped the Trojans to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-12. The loss was the seventh in 11 games for a powerhouse program still struggling under the cumulative effect of NCAA sanctions, but unwilling to accept such a dramatic decline. "Its never the perfect time to do these things, but I thought it was the right time," Haden said. Ed Orgeron will be USCs interim head coach for the final eight games of the season before Haden chooses a permanent successor for one of college footballs highest-profile jobs. Orgeron, Kiffins assistant head coach and top recruiter, is the former Mississippi head coach. Haden broke the news to Kiffin in a 3 a.m. meeting at the Trojans private airport terminal, but not before a 45-minute chat in which Kiffin tried to change Hadens mind. Haden didnt hire Kiffin, but had been firmly behind the coach in public until Saturday, when the Trojans matched the most points allowed in school history. "He did a lot of things well under some very difficult circumstances here," said Haden, who also fired mens basketball coach Kevin ONeill during the season last January. "No one could have worked harder. He did a lot of the things we asked. Graduated players, never had compliance issues ... and he really worked under some very difficult NCAA sanctions, theres no doubt about it." Kiffin ran a competent program despite the loss of 30 scholarships over a three-season stretch that ends in 2015. But even Kiffin acknowledged he wasnt winning enough in the last two seasons at a school with USCs pedigree, and he also created off-the-field troubles ranging from ethically questionable tactics to pointless squabbles with media. "Lane did negotiate some of these things remarkably well," Haden said. "I have supported Lane with my heart and soul for 3 1/2 years and gave him every opportunity. He wasnt given a fair hand in a lot of ways. I said all along, we graded on the curve, but we failed on the curve, too." The Trojans are off this week before returning Oct. 10 at the Coliseum against Arizona, giving Orgeron time to evaluate what can be done to salvage the season with the toughest matchups on USCs schedule still looming. Kiffin went 28-15 in parts of four seasons in his self-described dream job, but USC is 0-2 in conference play for the first time since 2001 after losses to Arizona State and Washington State -- and the record only partly captures the discontent of USCs fans and alumni. The Trojans were unimpressive on offence even in their three victories this season, stoking unease around a school with sky-high expectations even at the tail end of crippling NCAA penalties stemming from coach Pete Carrolls tenure. Kiffin received withering criticism for persisting in calling the Trojans offensive plays himself well into the schools second straight poor offensive season. The Trojans lost their home opener 10-7 to the Cougars earlier this month, and Coliseum fans serenaded USC repeatedly with chants of "Fire Kiffin!" USC has been in a slow tailspin since going 10-2 and beating Oregon in 2011, the last year of its bowl ban. After starting as the preseason No. 1 last year, the Trojans finished 7-6 and out of the rankings -- the first preseason No. 1 in nearly a half-century to fall so far -- followed by this seasons disappointments. "I think it could easily be asked, Why not last year after the 7-6 season?" Haden said. "What do you know now that you didnt know after a 7-6 season? The rationale was the prior year, Lane had won 10 games. We thought, and (were) hoping that last year was an aberration. We felt we could rebound, make some changes, and indeed, Lane did. ... But at the end of the day, we just werent making the progress I felt we needed to make." The firing comes less than five months after Haden said Kiffin had "been as good as he can be" in the face of USCs sanctions. Before this season began, Haden said he was "100 per cent" behind the embattled Kiffin. "We support our coaches 100 per cent until theyre no longer our coaches," Haden said. Dalvin Cook Jersey. "Why would you support a coach 85 per cent?" The 52-year-old Orgeron went 10-25 in three seasons at Ole Miss, but that failed tenure did little to diminish his stature as a bulldog recruiter and defensive line coach. He coached alongside Kiffin at Tennessee before following his friend back to USC. Orgeron, a Louisiana native with a thick Cajun accent, might sound a bit out of place in Los Angeles, but hes a popular assistant coach and a USC devotee after 11 years over two tenures at the school. "Its an unfortunate day today that a coach got let go, but we understand the circumstances," Orgeron said. "I want to tell you were here as a staff to answer the bell. Were all accountable for what happened as a staff and as players. Us Trojans know how to do it." Orgeron said Clay Helton will be his offensive co-ordinator and the Trojans play-caller. Helton, USCs quarterbacks coach and passing game co-ordinator, has been with the Trojans since Kiffin returned in 2010. Most players found out about Kiffins dismissal by text messages in the middle of the night. The players have the next two days off before returning to practice Wednesday. "Well try to move forward now and focus on these next eight games, really bonding as a Trojan family and getting these wins," offensive lineman Marcus Martin said. Like the precocious Kiffins other two head coaching jobs, his USC tenure had an abrupt, messy exit. The Trojans former co-offensive co-ordinator was an NFL head coach at age 31, a head coach in the Southeastern Conference at 33 and USCs head coach at 34. If there was a consistent trend to those stops with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee and the Trojans, it was turmoil. With Oakland, he lasted only 20 games as an overmatched head coach before his departure became a public feud with Al Davis, the late Raiders owner. He then infuriated Volunteers fans when he left after just 14 months to head back to the Trojans. Former USC athletic director Mike Garrett hired Kiffin away from Tennessee to replace Seattle Seahawks coach Carroll, the architect of USCs dynasty over the previous decade. Kiffin was an assistant under Carroll, eventually running the Trojans offence alongside Steve Sarkisian, now Washingtons coach. Kiffin had nothing to do with the misdeeds committed under Carroll and Garrett, who was swiftly dismissed and replaced by Haden. The coach still faced enormous expectations at USC -- especially last season, when the Trojans started out ranked No. 1 in the country with quarterback Matt Barkley and star receivers Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. USC lost five of its last six games, including the Sun Bowl, and Kiffin parted ways with his father, defensive guru Monte Kiffin. The scholarship restrictions gradually eroded the Trojans depth, and last seasons struggles clearly hurt the vaunted recruiting power of Kiffin and Orgeron. Between the sanctions and injuries, the Trojans played at Arizona State on Saturday night with 56 recruited scholarship players, well below its limit of 75 and the standard 85. Kiffin didnt help several strange decisions. Last year, USC was reprimanded by the Pac-12 for underinflating footballs before a loss to Oregon. Kiffin also was criticized for switching jersey numbers on players in an apparent attempt to deceive the Trojans opponents. Kiffin even closed USCs practices to the public after years of transparency under Carroll, who embraced USCs tradition of raucous open workouts. This season, Kiffin also closed his practices to the media. He then dithered on his choice of a starting quarterback, waiting until the third game to select Cody Kessler over Max Wittek. The offence has been largely terrible this season, but Kiffin was finally undone by another dreadful game by his defence, which had been solid under new co-ordinator Clancy Pendergast until Arizona State piled up 612 yards. USCs next game is in 11 days, giving the Trojans time to regroup and heal. Orgeron still plans to hit the recruiting trail for a school in transition. "I want our guys to believe and have a little fun," Orgeron said. "One of the things well do as a staff is get really close to our players, circle the wagons a little bit and have some fun for these next eight games, and let the chips fall where they may." SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain -- Robin van Persie missed a penalty as Manchester United was held to a 0-0 draw at Real Sociedad in Group A of the Champions League on Tuesday. Allen Craig Red Sox Jersey . Van Persie saw a powerful shot ricochet off the right post in the 65th minute before hitting the same piece of woodwork four minutes later from the penalty spot. A scrappy opening half by both teams gave way to a United-dominated second period, with Javier Hernandez firing high over the bar in the 50th with an empty net beckoning. United midfielder Marouane Fellaini was sent off in the 90th minute after his second yellow card of the match. United remained top of the group with eight points while Sociedad earned its first point of the campaign. Bayer Leverkusen is second with seven points after drawing 0-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk, which has five points. United can clinch its place in the knockout stage with a victory at Leverkusen in its next match, which would keep Sociedad alive only if it wins at Shakhtar. "That was a game we should have won. It was there for us to take the points, get ourselves in a really strong position, and near enough get clear," United manager David Moyes said. "At the moment were still top of the group and in a good position." While Wayne Rooney set up Shinji Kagawa for an early chance, both teams failed to establish any rhythm until the half hour mark, when Imanol Agirretxe sent a good chance wide. Sociedads Carlos Vela and Alberto de la Bella caused trouble for United before the break, but neither side really threatened until Shinji Kagawa slid a pass through the box to Hernandez, who somehow powered the ball over when a gentle touch would have sufficed. Van Persie, who replaced Rooney, and Ashley Youngs entrances in the 63rd minute turned the game Uniteds way and the pair nearly created a goal from their first touches as Young found the Netherlands striker at the far end of the box, only for Van Persie to rocket an angled shot off the post. Markel Bergara was harshly judged to have tugged Young down inside the area to set up Van Persies spot kick, but again the Dutchman found the right post. "I felt I got a touch on it," Real goalkeeper Claudio Bravo said, "Im just not sure if it was before or after it came off the post." Vela chested Xabi Prietos rising shot just wide as Sociedad finally threatened Uniteds goal in the second period. Haris Seferovic replaced Antoine Griezmann with 10 minutes remaining despite the Frenchman being Sociedads top scoring forward this season, with five goals in his last three games. Antonio Valencia saw a shot cleared off the line after Griezmanns exit as Sociedad held on to avoid a club record fourth straight European loss. "I thought we started the game better but as they found space they started to take over," Real coach Jagoba Arrasate said. "The math says were still alive. Now we have to go to Ukraine and win." Mookie Betts Red Sox Jersey . Price also posted the longest shutout sequence since 1960 at 164:19 minutes. He stopped a combined 55 shots in Canadas final two games and 70 of 71 shots in Canadas three elimination games, allowing only a breakaway goal to Lauris Darzins of Latvia. For his efforts, Price was named best goalkeeper by the tournament directorate. Prices outstanding play is marred only by the extremely strong defensive play of Canadas top six defencemen; Shea Weber, Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester. Roger Clemens Red Sox Jersey . Switzerland faces Belgium or Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals in April. Serbia dropped into the World Group playoffs in September. While plenty of statistics illustrate Torontos turnaround in the second year of manager Ryan Nelsens tenure, stopping goals is not one of them.SOUTHAMPTON, England - Second-half goals from Yaya Toure, Frank Lampard and Gael Clichy gave 10-man Manchester City a 3-0 victory against Southampton in the Premier League at St. Marys on Sunday.Despite the emphatic nature of the scoreline, City was made to work hard for victory without ever being truly threatened by Southampton, which started the game second in the table after securing eight wins from 12 matches to start the season. But its encounter with the Premier League champion starts a challenging run of fixtures for Ronald Koemans team.Next up for Southampton its Arsenal and Manchester United, with games against Everton and Chelsea following in December and the Southampton manager said his side was shown how good they need to be to maintain their impressive form for the entire season. If I look at my players, two or three reached the level of what they can show, Koeman said. It was not good enough today. They showed us the difference. Chelsea and Manchester City are the two strongest teams in the Premier League. You have to be good to get a result and we were not good enough.City started the game with greater attacking intent, and should have had a penalty in controversial circumstances after nine minutes. As Sergio Aguero weaved into the penalty area, Southampton captain Jose Fonte slid recklessly into the City attacker and sent him tumbling. However, referee Mike Jones booked Aguero for diving rather than pointing to the penalty spot.Television replays suggested that was the wrong decision, explaining why Aguero was incredulous at being booked. The referee made a mistake, City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. I was absolutely sure that Sergio never dived. He does not try to cheat the referee.City controlled the first 20 minutes but it was Southampton that should have taken the lead with its first notable attempt at Joe Harts goal. The England keeper parried Graziano Pelles flick from a deep cross before diving low to his right to palm away the rebound from Steven Davis and rising quickly again to smother any opportunity Dusan Tadic could have had from a narroww angle. Boston Red Sox Jersey. But the home side was fortunate not to fall behind on the half-hour mark when Stevan Jovetic struck at goal following a swift City counter attack. The ball somehow found its way through the legs of Fraser Forster, but defender Toby Alderweireld rushed behind his goalkeeper and cleared the shot off the line. The second half began in the same attacking manner that inexplicably yielded a goalless opening 45.Alderweireld and Tadic both went close from long range for Southampton, before Aguero drifted into Southamptons penalty area and laid the ball off to Toure to fire a low, deflected shot past Forster in the 51st.City looked to consolidate its position almost immediately by replacing Jovetic with James Milner and it appeared to be more comfortable for it, stifling Southamptons attacking energy and enjoying more possession in the oppositions half. But in the 74th the game turned.Jesus Navas blazed across goal from inside the area after seizing upon a loose pass from Victor Wanyama, and Southampton launched a quick attack, which was abruptly ended when Eliaquim Mangala barged over substitute Shane Long. The defender had earlier been booked for a foul on Tadic, and referee Jones duly showed him his second yellow, leaving City with ten men.But Southampton barely had time to make the extra man count.Koemans side poured forward searching for a leveller when in the 80th, City launched a counter attack through Milner, who picked out fellow substitute Frank Lampard to fire clinically beyond Forster from the edge of the area to make the three points safe.Southampton still searched for a goal to get back into the game, but that approach played into Citys plan to hit the opposition on the counter. As another Southampton attack faded into Citys stern defence, Aguero picked up possession and raced down the left before threading an enticing ball across the six yard area for Clichy to convert.Im very pleased because I think we beat a strong team, Pellegrini said. Southampton have the best defence in the Premier League and also they attack very well. Robert Griffin III, the No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft, set numerous rookie records and was picked AP Offensive Rookie of the Year for the Washington Redskins.SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers scored early and then played enough defence to hang on. Scottie Upshall scored a short-handed goal and had an assist to lead the Panthers over the New York Islanders 4-2 on Tuesday night. Nick Bjugstad, Drew Shore and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers. Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots, and Ed Jovanovski had two assists. "We had chances tonight early in the game and they went in," Florida coach Peter Horachek said. Thomas Vanek and Colin McDonald scored for the Islanders. Kevin Poulin made 22 saves. The win was the first for Florida over the Islanders in five games, dating to the 2011-2012 season. The Islanders lost for the first time in five games and had a seven-game road winning streak snapped. Florida took a 4-0 lead on the short-handed goal by Upshall in the second. He took control of the puck as it slid away from New Yorks Andrew MacDonald at the blue line and skated in on Poulin, beating him on the stick side at 15:54 for his second short-handed goal of the season and first goal since Nov. 30 against Pittsburgh. "Anytime you get a flip up to a D-man who has trouble with bouncing pucks, youve just got to get on him," Upshall said. "It was one of those plays that I was lucky to poke it past him and stick with it and make a move." New York had come from behind in five straight road games to pull out a win, but a 4-0 deficit proved too much to overcome. "We talked about it before tonights game, that we wanted a better start," McDonald said. "Obviously, we didnt do that and got ourselves in a deeper hole than in the last couple games. Going down four, its just too tough to come back." The Islanders scored with 31 seconds left in the second. Matt Martin passed from behind the net in front to McDonald, who poked the puck past Thomas to make it 4-1. New York closed to 4-2 on Vaneks goal in the third. Vanek took a pass from Frans Nielsen behind the net and beat Thomas at 2:38. Thomas faced 15 shots in the third period but was abble to keep the Islanders in check after Vaneks goal. Matt Adams Cardinals Jersey. "Its rare in the NHL to have that kind of cushion," Thomas said. "It was nice, but at the same time its a challenge, too, because you dont want to let the other team back into it. They were right on the brink of coming back there after they got the second goal." The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the first, the first time they had scored three goals in a period since a 4-2 win over Dallas in the season opener on Oct. 3. Florida scored just 32 seconds in for its fastest goal this season. The Islanders turned the puck over at the blue line and Brad Boyes passed to Barkov low in the right circle. His wrist shot beat Poulin. "Early on we made some tough mistakes that cost us goals right away," Vanek said. Shores goal made it 2-0. Shore was the last Panthers player to touch the puck before it went off the skate of defenceman Brian Strait and into the net at 15:34. The goal was Shores first of the season. Bjugstad stretched the lead to 3-0 when his shot from in front beat Poulin on the left side with 36 seconds left in the first. Even though he gave up four early goals, Poulin made some good saves to prevent the game from turning into a rout. "Thats my job, I guess. To give the team a chance to win and thats what I tried to do tonight and every night Im in," Poulin said. "It wasnt an easy game tonight." The Islanders killed off a 5-on-3 penalty for 1:14 in the first period. The Panthers power-play drought extended to 0 for 22 in the past seven games. NOTES: The Panthers will host the 2015 NHL draft in Sunrise from June 26-27. ... Jovanovskis two assists were the first points for the Panthers captain since returning to the lineup from hip surgery on Jan. 4. ... Thomas faced New York for the first time since he left the team as a free agent in July. He was traded to the Islanders from Boston in February but never played a game for them. ... DETROIT -- Max Scherzer could have probably pitched one more inning after breezing through the first eight. Andre-Pierre Gignac Jersey . Detroits powerful offence made that unnecessary. Scherzer allowed two hits and struck out seven, and the Tigers backed their star right-hander with three early homers in an 8-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night. With a big lead and Scherzers pitch count in triple digits, manager Brad Ausmus decided to go to the bullpen for the ninth inning, instead of sending his starter back to the mound for three more outs. "I had it in me to be able to do it, and I had an extra day (of rest) coming up this next time," Scherzer said. "But given the context of the game, it wasnt the right decision for me to go back out there. Its an 8-1 game. Ive got my work in." Scherzer retired 23 of the last 24 hitters he faced, and Ian Kinsler, Victor Martinez and Torii Hunter all homered as part of a five-run first inning for the AL Central-leading Tigers, who have won 12 of 14. Tampa Bays five-game winning streak came to an end. Detroit leads second-place Kansas City by five games. Scherzer (10-3) allowed a first-inning sacrifice fly by Evan Longoria, but that was the first of 10 straight hitters retired by the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner. After allowing a single in the fourth, Scherzer retired another 13 in a row before he was pulled with a pitch count of 106. There would be no talking the manager into another inning. Ausmus met Scherzer in the dugout and shook his hand. "He was done. I was just confirming to him that he was done," Ausmus said. "It didnt really matter what he said. That was going to be the end for him. There was no reason to send him back out at that point." Erik Bedard (4-6) allowed six runs and eight hits with two walks in two innings. Miguel Cabrera had two doubles, a single, a walk and four runs for Detroit. The Rays are still at the bottom of the AL East, and the improved starting pitching that fueled their recent run was nowhere to be seen Thursday. After a leadoff single by Austin Jackson in the first, Kinsler homered to put the Tigers ahead. Cabreras walk was followed by Martinezs 21st home run. Hunter added a solo shot with one out to make it 5-1. It was Martinezs first game back after he missed three with soreness in his side. Cabrera doubled in the second and scored on J.D. Martinezs single. He also scored on a single by Hunter in the fourth. Scherzer, coming off a 13-strikeout performance against Houston in his previous start, fanned seven with a walk, and the Detroit defence played well behind him. Nick Castellanos made a diving catch in the third when Desmond Jennings hit a line drive to the third basemans left. Then Detroit shortstop Eugenio Suarez jumped high in the air to snag a liner by Ben Zobrist. The first seven spots of Tampa Bays batting order, listed by position, went CF-SS-LF-3B-1B-DH-RF -- or 8-6-7-5-3-0-9. Rays manager Joe Maddon called it a "Tommy Tutone lineup" before the game, in reference to that bands early-80s hit "867-5309/Jenny." Maddon may have scored points with pop music fans of a certain age, but he couldnt have enjoyed watching his hitters scuffle against Scherzer. James Loneys single in the fourth was the only baserunner the Rays managed after the first inning. "We had some good at-bats," Maddon said. "I thought we played well today, but we just got ourselves in a hole, and that let him be more aggressive." Scherzer has only one complete game in his career -- a shutout of the Chicago White Sox less than a month ago. NOTES: The Tigers sent substitute Don Kelly to the on-deck circle in the fourth instead of Castellanos. Ausmus said Castellanos was in the bathroom, and Detroit wanted someone in the on-deck circle if there was a play at the plate -- to signal to the runner whether to slide. ... Scherzer has reached 10 wins every year since the Tigers traded for him before the 2010 season. ... Detroit LHP Drew Smyly (4-7) faces Tampa Bay RHP Alex Cobb (3-6) on Friday night. Lucas Digne Jersey . Although taking two of three from the Baltimore Orioles wasnt nearly as uplifting as winning the World Series, it still felt pretty darn good. Felix Doubront and four relievers combined kept Baltimores potent lineup in check, and David Ortiz had three of Bostons 12 hits off Wei-Yin Chen in a 4-3 victory Thursday night. MELBOURNE, Australia -- Montreals Eugenie Bouchard is out of the Australian Open. Cheap NFL Jerseys For Sale . Chinas Li Na defeated Bouchard 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday in the semifinal of the womens singles tournament. The 19-year-old Bouchard is the first Canadian woman to reach the final four of a Grand Slam tournament in 30 years. "Im proud of how Ive improved as a player throughout the tournament. But Im never satisfied with losing. Im always disappointed," said Bouchard, who received a fifth stuffed Aussie animal -- an Emu named Sheila -- from her Australian fans dubbed the Genie Army. "I always want to go further and do better. I wouldnt say I exceeded my expectations, but Im happy with how I did." Li, the No. 4-seed and the 2011 French Open champion, is the only major winner and the highest-ranked player still in contention after the fourth-round upsets of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Defending champion Victoria Azarenkas lost in the quarter-final to Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. No. 5 seed Radwanska was playing Dominika Cibulkova in the second semifinal later Thursday. Bouchard was determined to build off the success she experienced at the Australian Open. "Ive been working hard my whole life to do this, play at Grand Slams and do well," said Bouchard. "Its not an overnight thing. So Im just going to go back to the practice courts and keep working hard." Li, who lost last years final to Azarenka, was aggressive from the start against Bouchard, who started nervously and didnt win a point in her first three service games. Fittingly, Li finished off the match with a backhand crosscourt, one of 16 backhand winners in the match and her biggest weapon against Bouchard. "I think maybe she will be best player in the world. But today (Im) so lucky," said Li during a court-side interview after the match. Li jokingly apologized to the Genie Army after the match, undoubtedly increasing her own huge support base at Melbourne Park. "Sorry about that," she said. "If you guys be happy, I will go home." Bouchard said she changed her strategy to get out of her early slump. "I just wanted to get into the match a little bit more. I felt like she was really hitting her shots. I was just letting her do all these winners side to side, it wasnt really my game," said Bouchard. "I tried to get into the rallies more, try to step in a little bit more, and try to put more pressure on her because she was just putting a lot of pressure on me. "She didnt give me much breathing space, much room to do what I want to do on the court. I tried to put pressure, but she just played too good at moments." Cheap Womens NFL Jerseys . The 29-year-old German, the 2011 overall World Cup champion, says she has decided "to end my career now.DALLAS -- Monta Ellis is headed to his first Game 7, and DeJuan Blair gets a chance to play his old team in San Antonio one more time after all. Dallas star Dirk Nowitzki will return to the site of one of the best moments of his stellar career. Ellis scored 12 of his 29 points to lead a fourth-quarter comeback that also got an energetic boost from Blair in his return after getting suspended, and the Mavericks forced a deciding game in their first-round series with top-seeded San Antonio, beating the Spurs 113-111 on Friday night. "Put all of our chips on the table and see what happens," said Ellis, whose 3-pointer put eighth-seeded Dallas ahead for a good at 94-92 with 5 minutes to go. Tony Parker matched Nowitzki with 22 points to lead the heavily favoured Spurs, who are stuck in a tossup series after they won all four games against the Mavericks during the regular season and had a 10-game winning streak against them after taking the opener. The only other time these teams played a Game 7, Nowitzki had an improbable three-point play to force overtime in San Antonio in 2006. The Mavericks went on to win the second-round series and reached the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. "Well, its the ultimate thrill," said Nowitzki, who is 4-0 in Game 7s in his career. "Nothing matters anymore. Just this one game." And Blair will be there. He missed Game 5 in South Texas after the league suspended him for kicking Tiago Splitter in the head when he was called for a foul when the pair got tangled up and fell to the court in Game 4. He never said he was mad that the league suspended him, but he showed it, knocking Parker the court with a hard screen that led to a three-point play at the end of the first half for Devin Harris. Then, he had four rebounds and two steals in the fourth quarter -- and finished with 10 points and 14 boards for his second double-double of the series. "His energy was great," said his old coach, San Antonios Gregg Popovich. "He was a man possessed on both ends of the floor. Thought he was really super." Blair had plenty of time to think about Game 6 after watching the previous game alone in his hotel room in San Antonio. "Winning on their court would be the best revenge," said Blairr, who spent his first four seasons with the Spurs and was with them for a heartbreaking loss to Miami in the NBA Finals last year. Wholesale Womens NFL Jerseys. "We just have to bring it next game." The Mavericks handed the Spurs their first road defeat when leading after three quarters this season on the same floor where Vince Carter had given them a 2-1 series lead and sent the crowd into hysterics with an improbable winning 3-pointer. Fans were standing the entire fourth quarter this time, when the Mavericks trailed by five points to start the final 12 minutes before a 14-2 run for an eight-point lead. Parker got the Spurs close again and had a duel of driving layups with Ellis in the final 2 minutes. Parker, who had 13 of his points in the fourth and added six assists, spun through the lane before shovelling one up over Nowitzki with his left hand to get the Spurs within 106-105. The Mavericks pushed the lead back to six before the Spurs made it interesting again with 3-pointers from Danny Green and Patty Mills. It wasnt over until a shot by Mills on an inbound play with 0.4 seconds left was ruled to have been late. It was short anyway. "I thought we just made too many mistakes tonight," said Tim Duncan, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. "Giving up 37 points in the last quarter is just too much for us. Defensively, weve got to be a little more solid than that." Both teams had six players in double figures, with Splitter making 11 of 12 free throws for a playoff career-high 19 points. Danny Green had 17, matching his total for the first five games of the series combined, and Tim Duncan had 16 points and nine rebounds. Carter finished with 13, and Jose Calderon had 12 points and six assists. NOTES: The Spurs were 25-0 on the road when leading after three quarters before this game. Theyre now 55-2 overall for the season. ... The Mavericks had seven turnovers in the second quarter, and the sloppy stretch helped the Spurs cut an 11-point deficit to two at 41-39. Dallas had seven more turnovers in the third, when a six-point lead turned into a five-point deficit. ... Mavericks C Brandan Wright did not play for the first time in the series after playing a series-high 26 minutes in Game 5 when Dallas pick-and-roll defence was shredded. Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork. White USWNT Jerseys .com) - Joni Ortios first start of the season was a memorable one, as the 23-year-old netminder shut out the Vancouver Canucks and carried the Calgary Flames to a 1-0 victory -- the clubs first over its Pacific Division rival in nearly two years. Ortio was recalled from Adirondack of the AHL on Friday and gave Jonas Hiller the night off. He was peppered with 36 shots and, with the help of the post on several occasions, denied every one of them. The guys did a heck of a job in front of me, Ortio said. We kept them on the outside pretty much the whole game. They didnt get a lot of Grade-A chances. Mikael Backlund provided the game-winning goal on Calgarys first shot. The Flames, who came in 0-3-0 in the new year, had dropped nine straight against the Canucks, their previous win coming on Mar. 3, 2013. Eddie Lack saved all but one of the 23 shots he faced in the loss. Sometimes you play well and dont win, that was tonight, Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins said. It took 5:38 for the Flames to record their first shot, but they made it count. A turnover in the neutral zone resulted in a rush the other way, and David Jones fed Backlund in front for his fourth goal of the season. The Canucks had a goal disallowed with 4:29 remaining in the second when it was ruled Henrik Sedin knocked the puck in with a high stick. Vancouver, which did not have a power play the entire game, only recorded eight shots in the third period after keeping Ortio busy with 28 over the first two. The best chance came in the final minute with Lack pulled, but Ortio secured a loose puck in the crease just in time. Game Notes Ortio went 4-4-0 in nine games with Calgary late last season ... Vancouver went 2-3-0 on its five-game homestand ... Flames defenseman Mark Giordano and Canucks forward Radim Vrbata were both named to the All-Star Game on Saturday, while Flames rookie forward Johnny Gaudreau was chosen to participate in the skills competition. BOISE, Idaho -- With his fifth-ranked team trailing by two points in the final seconds, San Diego State coach Steve Fisher was all but certain senior point guard Xavier Thames was going to take the final shot for the Aztecs on Wednesday night. Eduardo Portugal Jersey . But Thames surprised his coach -- and most of the 9,602 in attendance -- when he whipped a pass to Dwayne Polee II, who drained a three-pointer with four seconds left to give the Aztecs an improbable come-from-behind 67-65 victory that extended their winning streak to 19 games. "It was like the Red Sea parted," Polee said. "I wasnt surprised. X is a real unselfish player, and if there was one person open, he was going to find them." Thames finished with 23 points for San Diego State (20-1, 9-0 Mountain West), but it was his steal at midcourt in the final minute and his second assist of the game that saved the Aztecs, who trailed by 14 points in the second half. "What can you say about Xavier Thames?" Fisher asked. "You cant tell me that hes not playing as well as anyone in America right now." Thames said he was very close to taking a shot that would have tied the score. But at the very last second, he changed his mind. "I had a pretty decent look, but I saw DP out of the corner of my eye," Thames said. "I was going to shoot a floater but (Ryan) Watkins was going to contest it. Then I saw (Anthony) Drmic sink down. It was on the tip of my fingers (to shoot). It was pretty close." Close is the typical result when the Aztecs and Broncos (15-8, 5-5) play. The past six meetings between the schools have been decided by six or fewer points. San Diego State eliminated Boise State from the past two conference tournaments and won 69-66 last month in San Diego. "Theyre a good matchup for us, and were a good matchup for them," Thames said. "We know were always going to get a great game for them." Mikey Thompson led the Broncos with 16 points and Thomas Bropleh and Derrick Marks both added 15. "I just feel awful for these guys right now," Boise State coach Leon Rice said. "They are giving everything they have. We just havent finished." Boise State led the final 18 minutes of the first half and the first 15 of the second before a scoring drought allowed the Aztecs to rally. After Bropleh banked in a three-pointer to give the Broncos a 57-43 lead with 13:37 to play, Boise State only made one field goal in the next 11 minutes and the lead disappeared when Thames scored his seventh consecutive point to give his team a 61-59 lead with four minutes to play. Boise State finally got on track, getting two free throws and a layup from Thompson and a basket from Marks to retake the lead at 65-62. Thames made a steal in the final minute and hit two free throws after being fouled, and after Marks missed a jumper, the Aztecs were in position for the biggest play of the game. "That was a tough, gutty character-type game for us," Fisher said. "We stayed with it and found a way to win." Thames said there was some motivation to keep the winning streak going. With its meteoric rise to No. 5 in the poll, the Aztecs expect to get every teams best shot the rest of the way. "We talked at halftime about that," he said. "We said, You know they are going to rush the court if they win. We didnt want that to happen." Josh Davis had 10 points for San Diego State, which won despite turning the ball over 15 times and allowing Boise State to shoot 51 per cent from the field and make eight three-pointers. "They just kept hitting shot after shot," said Polee, who finished with nine points and was 1 for 1 on three-point attempts. "Everything they threw up was going in. We just had to buckle up." The win was the 10th straight win away from home for San Diego State and its ninth Blank Portugal Jersey . MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Andres Iniesta Jersey . - With the Miami Dolphins at 7-7 and all but eliminated from the playoffs, defensive tackle Jared Odrick talked about playing out the season. Were on a team thats .500, he said. If you dont believe that youre a .500 team, you have to go out there and prove it. Weve got two more games to do that.So a winning record would be a significant achievement?Nah.Finishing 9-7? Odrick said. Finishing 9-7 and not going to the playoffs doesnt mean a thing. If more Dolphins could reverse direction so quickly, they might be Super Bowl-bound.Its tough to blame Odrick for having trouble convincing himself that Sundays game matters. Motivation can be difficult for teams out of the playoff chase, and thats the challenge both teams face when the Dolphins play the Minnesota Vikings (6-.Here are things to know about the matchup between also-rans:THE STAKES: The game means a lot to Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, whose job is in jeopardy after lopsided losses the past two weeks likely ensured a third consecutive season out of the playoffs.Players have been vocal in defending Philbin and his staff.I dont think its the coaches fault, receiver Mike Wallace said. I think its our fault. I dont think weve played up to our potential throughout our games. I dont think weve played a full 60 minutes, except maybe two or three times. Were selling ourselves short — the players, not the coaches.Another loss might seal Philbins fate, while a sweep of the final two games would give Miami its first winning season since 2008, a sign of progress that could influence owner Stephen Ross.In the absence of Adrian Peterson, the Vikings have been out of the race since Thanksgiving. But theyve won two of their past three games to give them a shot at a .500 finish under first-year coach Mike Zimmer. Were moving in the right direction, defensive end Brian Robison said. Thats what you want to see out of a club thats under a new regime.QB HOMECOMING: There likely will be lots of empty seats Sunday, but dont blame Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. The Miami native will have plenty of family and friends in attendance, although he couldnt provide an exact count because his mother handles ticket requests.Im pretty loved back home in Miami, and a lot of people tell me that Im a role model in my community, Bridgewater said. So itll be amazing to see how many turn out there and get to see me play in person for the first time.Bridgewater grew up a Dolphins fan and attended a couple of their games before heading off to Louisville. He said he envisioned himself playing in the stadium someday. As a child I had high dreams and aspirations, he said. Making it to the National Football League and to be able to play there my first year in the NFL, its pretty amazing.Bridgewater will make his 11th start, passing Fran Tarkenton and Christian Ponder for the most by Vikings rookie quarterback.GOING LONG: Miamis Ryan Tannehill is finally showing progress with his accuracy on long passes. In last weeks loss at New England, Tannehill threw deep to Wallace for 50 yards on the first play, and went long to Wallace for a 32-yard score at the end of the first half. Another deep throw into the end zone was dropped. He had a number of deep balls that were as good as any we have seen him throw in games, offensive co-ordinator Bill Lazor said. We have seen improvement in practice, and we kind of felt like that it should be showing up in the game. For the season, Tannehill is 8 for 36 (22 per cent) on throws of more than 20 yards.COACHING PALS: Zimmer said his friendship with Dolphins defensive co-ordinator Kevin Coyle could be a factor in the game. They worked together with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2008-11, when Zimmer was defensive co-ordinator and Coyle coached the secondary.Ive played against guys that have been with me before, and theyll run a play and you will say, Ah, I told them about that, Zimmer said. Its one play here or there.WINTER IN MIAMI: The Vikings practice in their field house with the doors open to simulate colder conditions for late-season games, but this week the doors were closed and the heat turned up to prep for Miami. It will be 80 degrees, Zimmer said before one workout. Not sunny, but it will be 80 degrees.___AP Sports Writers Dave Campbell and Jon Krawczynski in Minneapolis contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Steven Wine on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Steve_Wine Sergi Samper Barcelona Jersey .
