KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Boston Red Sox placed third baseman Kevin Youkilis on the disabled list because of a back injury Thursday and called up catching prospect Ryan Lavarnway from triple-A Pawtucket. Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced the moves before the opener of a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. The 24-year-old Lavarnway was scheduled to make his major league debut as the designated hitter, batting seventh in the Red Sox lineup. Youkilis, who is hitting .266 with 17 homers and 78 RBIs, has missed several games recently because of what Francona called "a back strain or sprain." Youkilis remained in Boston after Wednesday nights game against Tampa Bay to be examined by doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also received an injection to alleviate some of the pain in his lower back. "His body was so beat up anyway, I think this was the last straw, kind of put him over the edge," Francona said. "But hopefully we can get him back to where he can be Youkilis. I think after the game yesterday, it was obvious we needed to get him checked out." The 32-year-old Youkilis was selected to his third all-star game this summer. He joins a rapidly growing Boston disabled list that includes designated hitter David Ortiz (bursitis in right foot), reliever Bobby Jenks (sore back), and outfielder J.D. Drew (left shoulder impingement)." "You lose one, its kind of a big deal, you lose two it doesnt help," Francona said. "But you know, our challenge is to not let it affect us winning games, so thats what well do." Jed Lowrie and Mike Aviles will split time at third base with Youkilis on the DL. Lavarnway could have the opportunity to catch, though his defence has not progressed nearly as rapidly as his bat. He was hitting a combined .293 with 30 homers and 85 RBIs at double-A and triple-A, and thats why Francona expects him to be primarily the designated hitter while hes with the team. "I tried to keep my head out of the roster up here," said Lavarnway, a sixth-round draft pick in 2008 who has shown considerable power at every level. "I didnt want to get too ahead of myself." Lavarnway said he didnt expect to make it to the majors so quickly, and he hardly worked with the starting pitchers in spring training, when young catchers who might have a chance of making the major league team are usually given a look. He flew into Kansas City on Thursday morning, but still wasnt entirely sure he was added to the roster until he landed in the afternoon. "It was bad on the plane. I had knots in my stomach," he said. "Now that Im here, its back to business. The routine of the day will help me get back into it." Robert Mathis Colts Jersey . Hi Kerry, So Shawn Thornton gets a slap on the wrist for the water squirting incident - a childish, unsportsmanlike and potentially dangerous act, but players can get two minutes for spraying the goalie with snow when sometimes inadvertently just trying to stop quickly? GENEVA -- Tour de France champion Chris Froome wants an investigation into cyclings doping history to finally close an era dominated by Lance Armstrong. Almost 18 months after Armstrongs seven Tour wins were wiped from the record, an independent panel created by the new International Cycling Union leadership has begun work to discover the extent of the sports past problems. "I hope that anyone who does have anything to contribute would get involved." Froome told The Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday. The three-man Cycling Independent Reform Commission aims to investigate how doping happened from 1998-2013 and possible UCI complicity in helping Armstrong and his teams avoid scrutiny. "I am hoping that at the end of the day people will be able to say of it, Right, that was that era, we can now put that to bed and stop asking questions about it," Froome said. Armstrong and former UCI presidents Hein Verbruggen and Pat McQuaid will be invited for confidential, closed-door interviews with the panel which is based at Lausanne, Switzerland. None of the trio has committed publicly to meeting with the panel, which is chaired by Swiss politician and prosecutor Dick Marty. Froome said the panel could engage "not just necessarily those three, but anyone really who is part of that era and can contribute to resolving it." "Its going to be more negative publicity for the sport. Thats never good," Froome acknowledged. The Team Sky leader, who made a winning return to racing last month at the Tour of Oman, said he had not heard much talk about the commission among current riders, who must help restore the sports credibility. "Theres a lot of really, really talented young riders coming through the system now that I believe in personally." Froome said. "These are going to be the guys carrying the torch going forward." Froome will be 29 when he is scheduled to start defending his Tour title on July 5 in northern England -- probably with 2012 winner Bradley Wiggins alongside him. "Im confident whoever is in there, we are going to have the strongest team possible," said Froome, whose frayed relationship with Wiggins was mended in the off-season. "He can do a lot of damage to the peloton. Hes one of the best climbers in the world and we know his time trialing ability." Froome expects to follow the path both he and Wiggins followed to Tour success, competing in -- and winning -- stage-race preparations at the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland and Criterium de Dauphine in France. "I think it would be crazy to really change things up too much," Froome said. "We found it has been a good system that has worked quite well for us." Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, on the sidelines of a Team Sky sponsors event, Froome said extra work being a Tour champion was "a bit of a juggling act" with his training program. Still, the Oman victory suggests he got the balance right. "It just backs up that I have had a really good winter preparation," Froome said. "Im where I need to be for the season coming up." And it doesnt help that theyre in a franchise worst slump. On Sunday, Montreal matched a team high five-game losing streak, falling 3-2 to the visiting Portland Timbers. As assistant coach Mauro Biello sees it, the struggles have started to take their toll on the players both mentally and physically. "Right now, were very fragile," said Biello. "As much as its on the field with the ball, its in our head. When things dont go well, its something thats always there. Its a mindset that has to change if were going to want to win some games. "You try to tell the players to focus on things they can control." Biello was on the sidelines managing the Impact on Sunday after Frank Klopas was suspended for arguing with a referee during Montreals game on Thursday. Biello is now 1-1-3 at the helm of the Impact. "Its normal that players are frustrated," he said. "We gave up three goals at home. Its unacceptable. If you want to win a game, you cant give up three goals at home." With the game tied 2-2 in the 82nd minute, Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri pounced on a giveaway by former teammate Mamadou Danso before curling the winner just out of the reach of goalkeeper Evan Bush. Danso, who was making his first appearance for the Impact, missed his clearance after losing his footing on the rain-drenched pitch. "I have to go back and watch that again," said Danso, who was traded from Portland to Montreal in June. "The cross came in and I stepped in to block it. I can not say at the top of my head what happened. I definitely have to go back and look at it and try to rectify it." The last-place Impact (3-12-5) have been at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings since Apr. 5. Recently, Montreal is making a habit of losing games late. Against Chivas USA on July 5, the Impact conceded a goal to Erick Torres four minutes into stoppage time for the first of five consecutive losses. The following week, a defensive howler in the 89th minute gifted Sporting Kansas City the 2-1 victory. In Columbus last Saturday, a strike from distance in the 75th minute sent Montreal home sulking. "Weve been missing something these last few games," said Marco Di Vaio, who came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute versus the Timbers. "Were conceding goals out of nothing. Its mental right now. We have to find the solution in the dressing room, between us. Its a very tough time for us right now. What we did today simply isnt enough. "Its definitely mental. Physically, were the same as other teams. Something important is missing. Maybe were trying to do too much, or maybe were thinking too much. We have to find the solution as a team. We cant finish this way. We dont want to finish last. We have to be more confident. We have to find a way.&quoot; After taking a surprising lead in the 13th minute on Andres Romeros first goal in seven games, Montreal conceded twice in quick succession after the half-hour mark.dddddddddddd Argentine midfielder Maximiliano Urruti scored his team-leading ninth goal, and second in two games, in the 34th minute. Timbers forward Darlington Nagbe, Portlands most dangerous player in the first half, found a hole in the Impact defence and fed Urruti, who was waiting patiently in front of Bushs net. Five minutes later, Canadian international Will Johnson gave Portland (6-6-9) the 2-1 lead from the penalty spot after he was taken down in the box by Impact defender Hassoun Camara. Bush, making his third consecutive start in place of regular starting goalkeeper Troy Perkins, was given no chance on Johnsons penalty. "Its hard to feel positive about our results right now," said Bush, who ended the night with six saves, including four in the first half. "Its not like anybody is giving up. Its not like were throwing away the season, by any means. Guys are working hard, and you can see that, emotionally, guys are distraught after games like these. "Weve put so much work during the week into preparation and training, so its difficult. Things are only going to stay this way until we have the right mentality." Down 2-1 with halftime approaching, Montreal looked to right the ship when Maxim Tissot, a product of the Impact Academy, finished off an impressive team effort that involved four of Montreals midfielders. Captain Patrice Bernier, making his 150th appearance for the club, got the play going after the Timbers turned over possession in their own half. Bernier crossed to Felipe, who fed Justin Mapp, who gave it right back to the Brazilian. Felipe one-touched the ball down the left wing to a streaking Bernier, who squared to Tissot in the 18-yard box. The 22-year-old Tissot, in his fifth start with the Impact this season, side-footed the equalizer past keeper Donavan Ricketts. "Ive had a few good chances this year that I havent put away," Tissot said. "In terms of confidence, it will definitely help me. Its just a shame we couldnt get the result, or at least one point. Before I played for the team, I was a supporter of the team. So I know what theyre living right now. "Its not easy for them, and its not easy for us." Montreal has yet to beat a Western Conference opponent this season (0-6-1). Notes: The loss was Montreals first this season when scoring the opener at home (3-1-2). à After starting the last game on the bench, striker Jack McInerney was back in the starting lineup on Sunday. McInerney has not scored in his last five games. à It took 53 minutes for the Timbers to record their first foul of the game. Montreal had 15 at that point. à Montreal plays host to Jermain Defoe and Toronto FC next Saturday. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

SAN FRANCISCO - Giants manager Bruce Bochy has announced the worst-kept secret in San Franciscos clubhouse: left-hander Madison Bumgarner will start Wednesdays wild-card game against Pittsburgh or St. Louis.Bochy said before Sundays regular-season finale against San Diego that he felt comfortable with Bumgarner or Jake Peavy on the mound. But given Bumgarners success the last few years, he said I dont think there was any question who you pitch that game.Bumgarner was 18-10 with a 2.98 ERA this season. He has a 3-2 record with a 3.79 ERA in six post-season starts, all during San Franciscos runs to the 2010 and 2012 World Series titles. The winner of the wild-card game will face the Washington Nationals in a best-of-five division series. There are a handful of women coaching players on the ATP Tour, but none with anywhere close to the profile of Murray, a two-time Grand Slam winner and Olympic gold medallist. "Amélie is someone I have always looked up to and admired," Murray said in a statement. "Shes faced adversity plenty of times in her career, but was an amazing player." It is rare for an elite mens player to be mentored by a woman, especially one who is not related to him. Jimmy Connors was once coached by his mother. Billie Jean King coached Tim Mayotte for a short time. Andrei Chesnokov was coached by Tatiana Naumko. Early in the French Open, Murray was asked about the possibility of hiring a female coach and how that may be received by his peers. "For me, I dont care," said Murray, who had been without a coach since parting ways with Ivan Lendl in March. "I dont really care whether some of the other male players like it or not. Thats not something that really bothers me. I was coached by my mum for a long time. I have had her around at tournaments for a long time. There has been ex-players and stuff that have said, Oh, your mom shouldnt be around, or, She shouldnt come and support you or come to watch. You know, its silly. "Everyone is entitled to have the team around them that they want. Everyone works very differently. You know, some men might not work well with a female. Some men might work well with a female coach. Its just whatever your preference is and whatever your needs are. Thats basically it." Judy Murray, Andys mum, weighed in on Twitter saying, "Love it," in response to the news. Mauresmo, a former world No. 1, who won Wimbledon and the Australian Open, held a news conference in Paris just moments before the start of the mens French Open championship match between Rafael Nadal, coach by his Uncle Toni, and Novak Djokovic, who is coached by Boris Becker. The following is a transcript of Mauresmos exchange with reporters: Q. What was the moment when you thought that you would take over as coach of Andy Murray? What is it about the job that is fascinating to you? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: Andy contacted me a few weeks ago and we started to talk about this possibility to work, to be working together. Its not really something that I was thinking doing when I stopped being a tennis player. Then we talked again a little bit more about how to do the things maybe about his game, about different things. We came up with the will from both sides to, yeah, to give it a shot. Q. Could you talk a bit about the fact obviously youre a woman, hes a man. Do you consider that of any relevance, or do you see it possibly as a positive advantage for you? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: I would say that, yeah, I mean, its probably something that have to you ask him at some point why he made this choice. We all know his mother was a big part of his tennis career. I think hes maybe looking for something different, about emotions and sensitive things. Its not really interesting for me, this part of the story, to be honest. All Im interested in is to be able to help him in his goals. Thats about it. The rest is the story for you to write, I guess. But, yeah, for me its a challenge. I want to take it. Q. Can you tell us what areas of Andys game you believe you can be the most help to him in? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: I dont think Im going to go into these details right now. I think we really get to know each other, really get to start, and actually start working together. Well maybe talk about iit at some point.dddddddddddd Q. He had obviously choices and people to consider. When he contacted you the first time, did he say, Amélie, the reason I decided that you would be the right person is because you could bring me this or this that? Did he give you a reason why he thought of you? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: Yeah, he did. Q. Can you tell us what it is? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: Not really (Laughter). Not really. I mean, maybe he will tell you at some point. Q. Have you watched his game much over the years? Did you have any sort of relationship with him? Were you surprised when he rang? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: We didnt really talk to each other more than just greeting each other and stuff. I have watched him play, yes, many times. Again, we have talked a little bit already about his game. We definitely going to get more into this very soon, I guess. Q. Were you surprised when he rang? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: It was a little bit of a surprise, yes. To be honest, yes. Q. This will obviously get a lot of attention because you are a woman going to be coaching a top man. Do you think it is an important step for mens sport for somebody to make this decision? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: Again, I mean, I guess it is a big story to write on and a step forward. But honestly, its not my big concern right now. Im happy about this new challenge. I want to help Andy. Its the only thing that I have in mind right now. Q. I think the reason why Andy stopped working with Ivan Lendl is Ivan said he didnt have enough time to spend with him. You will be available to travel with Andy throughout the year, will you? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: We have already, yes, talked about this. Yeah, not the whole year, not as fulltime, but, yes, significant amount of weeks that we have agreed on and should be good for everyone. Q. From your point of view, what do you expect to achieve with Andy and what would make the job a success for you? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: Well, its quite easy for me to answer this, and hes very open on this. He wants to win more Grand Slam or Grand Slams, so I guess thats what it is. Q. You were in a comfortable position as a TV consultant. AMÉLIE MAURESMO: Yeah, I was sitting. Now I will be... Q. You will have almost the same pressure as Andy. The expectations will be high. So what was the reason for you to accept such a tough challenge? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: First of all, I think he has the most pressure. Thats for sure when youre a player, and I know what it is. You have huge pressure on your shoulders. This will remain this way. Yes, it will change a little bit my life and my retirement, lets say. But Im passionate. Im passionate about this sport. I love challenges. I dont know, I guess I like to put myself on the line at some point and see what I can do. Q. We all know that since Billie Jean, a big part of the WTA, has been about the empowerment of women and opportunities. We all know also its extremely difficult for WTA players. What were your thoughts that Ernests Gulbis made the other day that he would not want his sisters to go into tennis and that its very tough and they should be focusing on families? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: I know him a little bit. I think you guys also know him quite a lot. Hes provocative at some point. Im not sure he was really thinking this way. He explained a little bit later why he said this. Im not really Im not shocked by this because I know him. I know how he is. Q. How long is your commitment with Andy? AMÉLIE MAURESMO: We are going to do the grass court season and we will talk after that. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Memphis Grizzlies will take their six-game winning streak on the road Monday night when they begin a three-game road trip against the Phoenix Suns. Memphis will also visit the Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves on this excursion. The Grizzlies havent lost since Jan. 19 at home against the Dallas Mavericks. Theyve won 10 of their last 11 and three straight on the road, where the Grizzlies are 14-7 this season. Memphis winning streak reached six on Saturday with an impressive 85-74 home triumph over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Grizzlies were led by their frontcourt duo of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. Randolph paced the game with 21 points and 18 rebounds, and Gasol added 15 points, 12 boards and five assists. In his return from a two-game absence, Mike Conley scored 10 points for Memphis. Its a standard thats being set, Conley said. Hopefully, we will continue to play with that effort and energy. The Grizzlies defense did the job against the Thunders stars, holding Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook to a combined 10-for-26 shooting from the field and 29 points. After a 6-2 homestand, the Suns were given a harsh dose of road reality on Saturday with a 106-87 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Markieff Morris posted his second straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Phoenix, which hadnt been away from home since an overtime loss to Memphis on Jan. 11. Eric Bledsoe finished with 16 points, followed by 13 from Isaiah Thomas and 10 from Goran Dragic. The Suns shot 36.3 percent from the field and committed 22 turnovers. The Warriors took a one-point lead into the half, then took over. They won the third quarter, 26-19, and the fourth, 28-17. We ran out of the gas toward the end, said Morris. We let them off the hook. The Suns have dropped three of five overall and lost three straight road games. The Grizzlies have owned this matchup in recent history. Stiverne stopped Chris Arreola in the sixth round Saturday night, claiming the WBC heavyweight title belt vacated by Vitali Klitschko.UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- It was as if Matt Moulson never left the New York Islanders. He was scoring goals, hearing cheers and chants of his name at Nassau Coliseum, and waving his stick to the crowd after being chosen as the games No. 1 star. And none of the fans decked out in orange and blue seemed to mind a bit that he was doing major damage against the home team while wearing a Minnesota Wild sweater. In his first game as an Islanders opponent since being dealt, Moulson scored two goals and had three points in the Wilds 6-0 rout of New York on Tuesday night. "I was pretty nervous. I dont think I slept a minute during pregame nap," Moulson said. "I was here for a long time. This team had a big place in my heart when I was here. The fans give great support. It was pretty emotional." Ilya Bryzgalov made 16 of his 36 saves in the first period when the Wild took a 2-0 lead. Minnesota made the most of 22 shots on a night coach Mike Yeo switched up his lines. "It some ways, you feel a little bit bad. You dont want to sit there and run up the score. Thats not the intention there," Yeo said. "(Moulson) is a guy that is obviously very, very well respected here. You see what the crowd is doing in a game like that. I thought that was very classy." Frustration was also noticeable in the crowd that is fed up with general manager Garth Snow, who not only traded Moulson, but this month also dealt Thomas Vanek -- the key player acquired when Moulson was sent to Buffalo. Moulson, like Vanek an impending free agent, was traded by Buffalo to Minnesota this month. He scored the first of the Wilds two goals in the opening period and their third in the final frame. "Anytime a trade happens or something when you switch teams, you have something to prove," Moulson said. "I had a lot of family and friends here so I made sure I didnt embarrass them." Wild forward Zach Parise will have a similar experience Thursday when the former Devils star plays in New Jersey for the first time since leaving as a free agent. "Its a little different situation. He got traded and I didnt," Parise said with a laugh. "I dont know how its going to be when I get there." Jared Spurgeon, a sixthh-round pick of the Islanders in the 2008 draft, made it 2-0.dddddddddddd. Mikael Granlund pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second, defenceman Clayton Stoner scored his first goal of the season on a breakaway in the third, and Justin Fontaine was credited with a goal after a video review to make it 5-0. Mikko Koivu had three assists to move past Marian Gaborik for the most points in Wild history with 438. Moulson closed the scoring with a power-play goal with 3:26 left. It was his 20th of the season and third in seven games with Minnesota. "I think the trade was pretty tough on him," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Ive seen him do what he did tonight many times." Bryzgalov earned his second shutout of the season and 32nd in the NHL. Anders Nilsson stopped 16 shots for New York, but couldnt match his fine performance of Saturday night when he beat Buffalo with a 33-save effort. Moulsons name was cheered when announced as part of the Wilds starting lineup, then he was feted with more applause when the Islanders thanked him on the video board. A louder roar went up when he scored his first goal 12:23 in. After his second, fans chanted "We want Moulson!" "I knew from playing against him here that he was a fan favourite," Parise said. "I dont think anyone expected the We Love Moulson cheers at the end, but it was nice to see him get a good reception." Spurgeon, a defenceman who never played for the Islanders, took a pass from Dany Heatley and one-timed a hard drive with 4:03 left in the first. Granlunds seventh of the season, gave the Wild a three-goal edge with 3:58 remaining in the second. Fontaines 13th goal zipped in and out of the net 7:06 into the third, but play continued for over a minute before a video review took place. Moulson and Koivu earned assists. CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jimmie Johnson was stunned by the proposed changes to the championship format he heard in a phone call from NASCAR chairman Brian France two weeks ago. Not because the six-time champion worried the radical overhaul was designed to stop his dominance on the Sprint Cup Series. Instead, France went over a proposal that Johnson had never heard before in multiple discussions with NASCAR executives. NASCAR will officially announce its Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format on Thursday. All signs point to a 16-driver field whittled down through eliminations to four drivers and a winner-take-all season finale. Johnson says he supports the format because NASCAR needed "something big" to re-ignite passion in its fan base. Chiefs Jersey . Tsonga, the No. 13 seed, picked up a break to go ahead 4-3 in the third set en route to his second straight upset win. The eighth-seeded Murray had won nine of 10 previous meetings against Tsonga, who reached the quarter-finals with a convincing victory over top-seeded Novak Djokovic. INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning could be back on the active roster in the next two weeks. If not, the Colts will have to play the first six games without the four-time MVP. League rules require players on the physically unable to perform list to be activated by the teams final cutdown, Sept. 3, or to sit out an additional six weeks. Conventional wisdom suggests Manning will be activated soon, something coach Jim Caldwell acknowledged Friday night after a 24-21 loss to Green Bay. "I would say that its certainly a realistic possibility here and it could happen shortly," Caldwell said. Thats the closest Caldwell has come to say when Manning might return. Indys franchise quarterback has been on PUP since practice began Aug. 1, and Caldwell has repeatedly said Manning will practice only after the doctors clear him. Last Saturday, Manning told reporters he would not play in the final two preseason games and that he needed the next two weeks to get healthy. While Colts officials continue to acknowledge that Mannings rehab is progressing well, there is only one preseason game left and time is running short. "Weve got a week and a half to make that decision," general manager Chris Polian told The Associated Press on Friday night. Manning is still recovering from May neck surgery, which was supposed to keep him off the field for six to eight weeks. But the recovery has gone slower than expected, in part Manning said, because he couldnt work out with the teams trainers during the 4 1/2-month lockout. Over the past week, concerns over Mannings health have grown. Last Saturday, team owner Jim Irsay wrote on Twitter that the Colts needed to be prepared to start the season without their franchise quarterback, an inconceivable thought until now, and asked fans for suggestions about who Indy should sign as a veteran backup. On Wednesday, after speculation Indy was talking Brett Favre, the Colts brought another quarterback out of retirement, former Tennessee quarterback Kerry Collins. Manning has already ruled himself out of next weeks preseason finale at Cincinnati, and he told CBS at halftime Friday that hes still hopeful he can play in the Sept. 11 opener at Houston. "I sure hope so. Ive never missed a game in my entire football career due to an injury since I was 13 years old, and I sure dont want to miss Week 1 of the season," Manning said. "Thats my goal is to be out there to play and, not just play, but to play competitively. I want to be out there to help my team win and if Im able to do so, Ill be out there." Manning has started 227 consecutive games, including the playoffs, the second-longest streak in NFL history for quarterbacks behind Favre. Colts officials have repeatedly said that there has been not been a setback in Mannings recovery, something Polian reiterated Friday. "Hes still progressing in rehab," he said. "Hell be ready when hes ready and thats when the doctors and he (Manning) say hes ready." In the meantime, the Colts have been refining backup plans. They signed Collins, presumably as Mannings top backup, though five-time Pro Bowl receiver Reggie Wayne believes Curtis Painter gives Indy the best chance at winning if Manning is not ready to start the season. Painter made his statement Friday by going 11 of 21 for 171 yards with two TD passes, and nearly led the Colts to their first preseason win in more than two years. Caldwell will make that call. "Its really more appropriate to ask coach Caldwell that question," Polian said when asked if Collins would be the No. 1 backup. Aside from Painter and Collins, the only other active quarterbacks on Indys roster are longtime NFL backup Dan Orlovsky and rookie Mike Hartline, an undrafted free agent. DETROIT -- Alex Gordons grounder up the middle looked like a routine out -- until it hit second base and took a wacky bounce, allowing the games first run to score. With breaks like that, its no wonder the Kansas City Royals have won 10 in a row. Omar Infante added a solo homer and Jeremy Guthrie pitched impressively into the seventh inning, helping the Royals extend their longest winning streak in 20 years with a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Kansas City has outpitched, outhit and outfielded the Tigers in taking the first three games of this series -- so the Royals have no reason to apologize for a little luck along the way. "Baseballs a funny game -- youve got to take full advantage of those," Kansas Citys Eric Hosmer said. "Were not complaining about it either." The AL Central-leading Royals have not won this many games in a row since a run of 14 in 1994. They extended their division lead over the Tigers to 1 1/2 games. Guthrie (4-6) allowed four hits and struck out nine in 6 2-3 innings. Drew Smyly (3-6) nearly matched him, but the Detroit left-hander was victimized by Gordons fluky RBI single in the first inning and Infantes homer in the fifth. J.D. Martinez homered off Guthrie in the seventh, but the Kansas City bullpen got the last seven outs, with Greg Holland pitching the ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances. Kansas City will try for a four-game sweep of the Tigers on Thursday. The Royals began the series by pounding star right-handers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, then Guthrie took the mound and breezed through the team that has won the last three division titles. "This could be the best game hes thrown all year," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "He was fabulous. ... We had to go back to our old way of doing things -- pitching and defence." It was Guthries second straight game with nine strikeouts -- he also reached the mark June 13 against the Chicago White Sox. He had some help Wednesday from his fielders, as Gordon saved a run in the fourth with a diving catch in left-centre. "Im not that fast, but I can turn it on when I want to," the Kansas City left fielder said. Fortune seemed to favour the Royals throughout the afternoon. With a runner on second in the first, Gordons two-out bouncer up the middle looked like a groundout to the shortstop, but it ricocheted off second base for a hit, allowing Hosmer to come home. In the second, Detroits Victor Martinez dropped a nice bunt against a shifted defence, only to have the ball roll foul inches before reaching third base. J.D. Martinez homered in the seventh, and Nick Castellanos nearly tied it later in the inning with a two-out drive to left that bounced off the fence for a double. Kelvin Herrera relieved Guthrie and retired Don Kelly on a lineout to centre. Wade Davis struck out the side in the eighth, and Holland made it through the ninth after allowing a leadoff single to Miguel Cabrera. Smyly allowed two runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings. He struck out six without a walk. The Tigers have lost 20 of 29 to fall out of first place. During his postgame news conference, Detroit manager Brad Ausmus replied sarcastically to a question about how his mood is when he heads home after these tough defeats. "I beat my wife," Ausmus said, clearly trying to joke. "Im just kidding around. No, luckily my wife and kids are fantastic. I do get a little mopey at home, but my wife and kids are good." About a minute later, without being prompted, Ausmus said he was sorry. "I didnt want to make light of battered women," the first-year manager said. "I didnt mean to make light of that, so I apologize for that if that offended anyone." NOTES: Kansas City OF Nori Aoki (groin) and Detroit OF Torii Hunter (hamstring) did not play. ... Nelson Cruz hit a grand slam and a solo homer as Baltimore pounded four home runs to outscore Toronto 10-8 on Wednesday night. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Angel Cabrera no longer has to fret about that streak of disappointments in non-major events on the PGA Tour. The 44-year-old Argentine won the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday for his first victory in a tournament other than a major, closing with his second straight 6-under 64 for a two-stroke victory over a heavy-hearted George McNeill. Cabrera, whose only other PGA Tour victories came in the 2007 U.S. Open and 2009 Masters, built a three-shot lead before making things interesting with a pair of late bogeys. He finished at 16-under 264 and now has another green jacket -- that as Greenbrier Classic champion. Cabrera had no top 10-finishes this season entering the tournament but had everything working Sunday, hammering drives and approach shots with precision and coming up with clutch putts, especially on the back nine. "This was a great opportunity," Cabrera said through an interpreter. "I wanted it. I needed to win a tournament. I felt under control today out there, and I didnt want to let it get away from me." McNeill shot a season-best 61 for his fourth top-10 of the season and first since mid-March. But hell put golf on hold for a few weeks. Golf Channel reported that his older sister, Michele McNeill, died of cancer Sunday morning and the player was informed after his round was over. "Golf doesnt really mean a whole lot," McNeill told reporters. So its hard." Webb Simpson had a 63 to finish third at 10 under. Third-round leader Billy Hurley III bogeyed four of the first six holes to fall out of contention. He shot 73 and finished in a seven-way tie for fourth at 9 under. No third-round leader has hung on to win the Greenbrier Classic in its five-year existence. McNeill was the clubhouse leader at 14 under well ahead of Cabrera, who still had the back nine to play. Cabrera overtook McNeill with birdie putts of 17 and 7 feet on the 11th and 12th holes, then gave a fist pump after moving to 17 under by holing a 176-yard 8-iron up the hill for eagle on the par-4 13th, the hardest hole at Old White TPC.dddddddddddd By then his lead was three strokes, but he bogeyed the 14th after his approach shot spun off the front of the green and bogeyed the par-3 15th after hitting into the rough on his tee shot. Cabrera smashed a 330-yard drive over the lake on the par-4 16th and made par, then drilled a 336-yard drive on the 616-yard 17th and two-putted for birdie. He closed out with par on the par-3 18th. "The big thing was the drive today," he said. "It was good all week long. It made the course play a little shorter for myself." Cabrera won $1.17 million and is projected to improve from 158th to 54th in the FedEx Cup standings. McNeill would move from 60th to 29th. Simpson had flown home on Friday and learned upon landing that he made the cut. So he rented a car and drove back to West Virginia. Simpson and Keagan Bradley both had strong finishes as they continue to try to impress U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson, who will make three at-large selections for the Sept. 26-28 event at Gleneagles in Scotland. The top nine in the Ryder Cup standings automatically qualify for the team. Simpson is 17th and Bradley is 18th. "I think Tom knows whats going on, and Im hoping my good play will take care of it and not have to be a captains pick," Simpson said. "But if I was a captains pick, it would be great to be on that team." Joining Hurley at 9 under were Bud Cauley (64), Bradley (66), Brendon Todd (66), Chris Stroud (69), Cameron Tringale (69) and Will Wilcox (69). The leading four players among the top 12 not already exempt for the British Open earned spots in the July 17-20 tournament at Royal Liverpool. Those spots went to McNeill, Stroud, Tringale and Hurley. Cauleys final shot of the day was a hole-in-one on the 18th, which triggered a $100 prize from the tournament to paying customers in the stands. But Cauley missed out this week on a British Open nod, whose qualifying tiebreaker uses the world ranking. Cauley entered the week at No. 295. Another spot will be handed out next weekend at the John Deere Classic. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

BOSTON – The Blue Jays scorching offence finished a three-game sweep of the Red Sox at Fenway Park and sits at or near the top of a number of the sports essential statistical categories. Toronto is first in home runs with 67; its second in slugging percentage (.445) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.773) and sixth in walks (16. Jose Bautista was the celebrated hero of April, smacking eight of his 11 home runs, working to a 1.065 OPS in the opening month. In May its been Edwin Encarnacion, the other half of the Blue Jays deadly three-four lineup combination, who has done most of the damage. With 11 of his 13 home runs this month, including four two-home run games and an OPS of 1.090, you could argue Encarnacions been carrying the lineup. Bautista doesnt want to hear it; not about himself and not about someone else. Theres plenty of credit to go around. "I think everybodys been contributing since day one," Bautista told TSN.ca. "Melky, for instance, is leading the league in hits. Adams (Lind) hitting .320. Brett (Lawrie), even though his average is down a little bit, hes got 20-something RBI. Everybodys helping out. Franciscos got seven, eight home runs and 20 RBI as well. Navarros hitting close to .300." While Bautista insists he hasnt been pitched to differently since Encarnacion has heated up, he expects opposing teams to change their approach once they peruse the pre-scout books and video. "Im sure its going to change," said Bautista. "I think people are definitely noticing and now its going to be more on their radar how hot he is so hopefully that means Im going to get a couple of more mistakes over the plate." Taking his word for it, teams may not be pitching differently to Bautista but at least they now are pitching to him. Consider that in April, while Encarnacion laboured through a relatively slow opening month, Bautista walked 30 times in 122 plate appearances (24.6 per cent). In May, through to the end of Thursdays game, Bautista has walked 11 times in 94 trips to the plate (11.7 per cent). Through Thursday, the Blue Jays had won six of seven and 12 of 17. They have a number of individuals at or near the top of a number of categories. They include: Melky Cabrera: 64 hits, the most in Major League BaseballEdwin Encarnacion: 13 home runs (Tied-3rd); 39 RBI (6th). Jose Bautista: 12 home runs (Tied 6th), 41 walks (1st); .435 on-base percentage (5th); .988 on-base plus slugging (5th). Mark Buehrle: Eight wins, the most in Major League Baseball; 2.16 ERA (8th). GIBBONS LIKES HIS OFFENCE The story of Torontos offensive production got lost earlier this season amid the worry over the starting pitching and the bullpen blowing leads. With the Jays winning, the bats move to the forefront. The skipper has seen it all year. "We can hit, top to bottom," said manager John Gibbons. "Its a strong American League lineup and thats kind of what you need in the American League. Were really a home run threat with most of those guys in that lineup we can burn you that way. I really like the approach we have at the plate. Were taking some hits the other way when its called for. The better pitchers, thats the way theyre attacking you. Were confident right now. You have good games when youre feeling good. Baseball is a game of ups and downs all year long but its a good strong lineup." HENDRIKS TO START FRIDAY The Blue Jays will recall right-hander Liam Hendriks from Buffalo on Friday and he will start the series opener against Oakland. R.A. Dickey will be pushed back to Saturday when he will throw on an extra days rest. "We just decided to split up Buehrle and Dickey," said Gibbons. "Theyre our old reliable guys, kind of our innings eaters." Hendriks is 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA and a 0.801 WHIP for the Triple-A Bisons. The 25-year-old is hoping for his first period of sustained major league success. In parts of three seasons with the Twins, Hendriks was 2-13 with an ERA of 6.06. A corresponding roster move will be made before Fridays game. HOME COOKING The Jays kick off a season-high 10-game homestand on Friday. After the Athletics come in for three, the Tampa Bay Rays will check in, followed by the Kansas City Royals for a four-game series. Toronto has a bus trip series to Detroit for three games June 2-4 and then will return home for six games, three each with the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins. For the Blue Jays, it isnt so much about capitalizing on home field advantage as it is trying to create a home field advantage. Toronto is 10-11 at Rogers Centre and 16-11 on the road. "We have to play good at home," said Gibbons. "Weve played actually better on the road this year than we have at home. Were there for awhile so hopefully we can take advantage of that." "I never want to have any outlook at any period of the season and start a sentence with We have to or We need to or Its imperative that we do anything," said Bautista. "Every time in baseball when you have that mentality things seem to go the other way. Weve just got to focus on the preparation, go out and give it our all every single day and take it one day at a time and hope for good results and if we get them, we get them." Oakland comes to town the leader of the American League West with a record of 30-17. Despite a 5-2, 11-inning loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday, the Athletics have won 11 of their last 13 games. The game will return to Hawaii in 2016, the NFL announced Wednesday. The 2015 game will be the third time the Pro Bowl is held in the same city as the Super Bowl. The NFLs all-star game took place in Los Angeles after the first Super Bowl in 1967, then the two games werent in the same city again until South Florida in 2010. Since 1980, all but one Pro Bowl has been held at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, the college football home of the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The Pro Bowl will remain a week before the Super Bowl, as it has the last five years. The new format introduced after last season, which scrapped the AFC vs. NFC matchup, will be retained. The new format splits the all-stars through a schoolyard-style draft, a setup loosely based on fantasy sports meant to play toward player egos and the changing ways fans are interacting with the game. The Pro Bowl after this coming seasoon will take place Jan.dddddddddddd25, 2015, at University of Phoenix Stadium. A year later, the game will be held Jan. 31, 2016, at Aloha Stadium. Tourism officials in Hawaii said they were pleased that the game was coming back in 2016 and the deal has an option for the game to be played in Hawaii in 2017. "While we would like to have had the Pro Bowl in Hawaii in 2015, the return of the Pro Bowl in 2016 provides the state with an opportunity to showcase our islands unique culture and beauty," Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said in a statement. The Hawaii Tourism Authority, the main agency that markets the state to tourists, said the 2014 Pro Bowl generated nearly $72 million in direct visitor spending, including spending by people who travelled with Pro Bowl attendees. The agency said Hawaii will pay $5 million to support hosting the Pro Bowl in 2016 and repurpose funds set aside for the 2015 game toward other initiatives, including drawing more conventions and tourists from Asia. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

After winning the Stanley Cup in June, the Chicago Blackhawks remain the top-ranked team in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings to open the 2013-2014 NHL season, ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings and Boston Bruins -- the usual suspects. What really works in the Blackhawks favour this time around, as opposed to following their 2010 Stanley Cup, is that, even with a decreasing salary cap, they didnt have to gut the roster. Sure, there are some tweaks, but its very much the same cast from last season, with a few prospects making the jump from the farm and veteran goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin returning to Chicago, giving Corey Crawford an accomplished backup. Its not as though maintaining close to the status quo automatically grants the Blackhawks the number one ranking, but even with their questions -- that number two centre spot still looks like it needs to be addressed -- they are in the best position entering the season. The second-ranked Penguins arent far off, especially with a healthy Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to start the year, but defenceman Kris Letang has a leg injury and goaltender Tomas Vokoun is sidelined after blood clots, so while the Penguins are still loaded, their back end isnt quite at full power and these rankings always take injuries into account. Which players are available to play matters. Last season, the Los Angeles Kings were the dominant possession team in the league, even though their results didnt indicate such proficiency. That was largely due to the play of goaltender Jonathan Quick, who struggled in his return from back surgery, but Quick was tremendous in the playoffs, so health shouldnt be an issue going forward. If the Kings are still a dominant possession team and get even average goaltending, they will hold their high ranking. Last years Stanley Cup finalists, the Boston Bruins didnt sit still in the offseason, shuffling out right wingers Tyler Seguin, Jaromir Jagr and Nathan Horton most notably, bringing in Loui Eriksson, Jarome Iginla and Reilly Smith the look up front. Otherwise, theres a lot of continuity in Boston -- the core is the core that has one Cup win and one Final appearance in the last three seasons. The top-ranked Canadian team, the Ottawa Senators, sits sixth, with a healthy Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza, along with newcomer Bobby Ryan, expected to upgrade the skill on last seasons surprise playoff team. Next in line, the Montreal Canadiens rank 10th, the Vancouver Canucks are 12th and the Toronto Maple Leafs sit 16th. Western Canada gets some tougher rankings to start the year. The Winnipeg Jets open at 23rd, the Edmonton Oilers -- minus centres Sam Gagner and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins -- 24th and the Calgary Flames 28th. There will undoubtedly be movers and shakers in the rankings throughout the season. Even in the lockout-shortened 2013 campaign, the Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders were all ranked in the 20s prior to the season starting, yet all three ended up making the playoffs, while the Philadelphia Flyers, ranked in the Top 10, missed the playoffs. Tyler Lockett had 119 yards on nine receptions with two touchdowns, while Curry Sexton also caught nine passes for 141 yards and a score for the Wildcats (9-2, 7-1 Big 12). Lockett entered the game four receptions (217) and two touchdowns (26) shy of tying his father, Kevin, for the school record in each category. Charles Jones caught a touchdown pass from Waters and ran for another in the win. Michael Cummings went 16-for-27 for 139 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Jayhawks (3-9, 1-, who have lost six straight meetings to their in-state rival. Kansas State, Baylor and TCU are tied atop the Big 12. The Wildcats wrap up their regular season next Saturday on the road in a pivotal matchup against Baylor. TCU, meanwhile, will host lowly Iowa State with both games deciding the Big 12 champion. Kansas State forced a quick punt of Kansas on the opening possession of the game, then DeMarcus Robinsons 35-yard run down to the Jayhawks 14 set up Waters 1-yard touchdown run three plays later. Dante Barnett got the ball right back for the hosts, intercepting Cummings at the KU 44. Waters wasted little time putting more points on the board as he converted a 44-yard strike to Lockett for a 14-0 lead. Randall Evans then picked off Cummings on Kansas ensuing touch, and Matthew McCrane capped the 12-play, 74-yard drive with a 41-yard field goal. Following a punt from each team, the JJayhawks finally got on the board with Cummings tossing a 27-yard TD to Nick Harwell at 8:42 in the second quarter.dddddddddddd The Wildcats blocked the extra point. Morgan Burns proceeded to return the kickoff 65 yards deep into Kansas territory. Four plays later, Jones rushed it in from 11 yards out for a 24-6 lead. Lockett hauled in passes of 17 and 11 yards on consecutive plays late in the half, then concluded the drive with a 6-yard touchdown reception with 47 seconds left. The Wildcats continued to pour it on in the third. Waters opened the quarter with a 20-yard pass to Sexton. Kansas States signal-caller capped the drive with a 13-yard TD pass to Jones. Kansas didnt give in, however, as it marched down the field for a score on Cummings 19-yard TD toss to Trent Smiley, who recorded the first touchdown of his career. Waters hit Sexton for a 37-yard touchdown strike later in the third for a 45-13 advantage. McCrane knocked down a 52-yard field goal early in the fourth, and Jack Cantele kicked a 39-yard field goal later to account for the final margin. Game Notes Kansas still leads the all-time series 64-43-5 ... Sexton now has 940 receiving yards for the season. If he records 60 more over the final two games, he and Lockett will become the first pair of Kansas State receivers to eclipse over 1,000 yards in the same season ... AUBURN, Ala. -- Former Auburn and LPGA player Danielle Downey has died in a single-car accident. She was 33. Downey lost control on Lee Road 57, the car overturned several times and she was ejected at about 10 p.m. Thursday, Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said Friday. Harris said she was apparently heading home after spending time with friends and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Downey was in her second season as Auburns director of golf operations. She filled in for coach Kim Evans during the 2012-13 season after Evans was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. "Im absolutely devastated," Evans said. "Danielle meant so much to me, the girls and this program. Not only did she give much of her life to Auburn as a student-athlete and as a mentor to these young women, but she was so instrumental to this team during some tough times over the past year. Danielle was like a daughter to me." A native of Rochester, N.Y., Downey was a three-time All-American who finished second in the 2002 NCAA tournament. Downey had seven top-10 finishes and one tournament victory on the Futures Tour. She finished in the money 15 times on the LPGA Tour from 2006 through 2010, including a career-best fourth at the 2008 Bell Micro LPGA Classic. Downey returned to school and graduated in May 2013 with a degree in health promotion. "This is a tragic and devastating loss for Danielles family, our student-athletes and staff and the entire Auburn family," Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said. "Danielle cared deeply about people and she was loved by all who knew her. She impacted a lot of lives here as a player and a member of our staff. A slew of upsets highlighted the first day of March Madness as Harvard, Dayton and North Dakota State all unseated higher seeds to reach the Round of 32. Dayton got the day started off on the right foot, beating Ohio State 60-59 thanks to Vee Sanfords layup with 3.8 seconds left. Harvard got the better of Cincinnatis vaunted defence, leading for a good portion of their 12 vs. 5 match-up and emerging with a 61-57 victory to bounce the Bearcats. North Dakota State became the second 12th-seeded team to advance after the Bison knocked out Oklahoma with an 80-75 overtime victory. But it was not all upsets and surprises, as some of the tournaments best and most visible teams advanced, keeping at least a few brackets intact. Florida - the only one-seed in action on Thursday was able to overcome an early surprise from Albany to earn a 67-55 victory. Wisconsin overcame some early-game jitters and powered past American 75-35 with a mammoth second-half, while Syracuse was able to comfortably top Western Michigan 77-53. Michigan State provided the days biggest solo performance, cruising past Delaware 93-78 on Adreian Paynes huge 41-point effort. The Michigan Wolverines were also amongst the days comfortable winners, downing Wofford 57-40. There were also plenty of nail-biters on Thursday as two additional games went to overtime. UConn rode a hot extra period from Shabazz Napier, who dumped in nine OT points to help the Huskies past Saint Josephs 89-81. Saint Louis took advantage of North Carolina States ineptitude from the line, erasing a double-digit second-half deficit to take out the Wolf Pack 83-80 in OT. Texas, too, made good at the last second, with Cameron Ridleys lay-up ending Arizona States tournament with just a tenth of a second left on the clock when the ball left his hand. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Last night I was focused on the Flyers come-from-behind win over the Red Wings on NBCSN but also kept ‘half an eye on the Montreal Canadiens frantic 4-3 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils via NHL Game Center Live on my computer screen. We have a number of questions involving two separate plays from the Canadiens-Devils game and both plays highlight the full concentration and split-second decisions required of a referee as he attempts to make the correct ruling. Obtaining the best sightline in advance is critical to correctly process information to make the right call. The first play in question was when Montreals Max Pacioretty was on a breakaway and had the shaft of his stick break as trailing defender Jon Merrill attempted a wild desperation stick swing at the attacker (Incident can be seen at 1:50 of attached highlights). I ran back in front of the television from my kitchen during an NBC intermission when I heard initial commentary that a stick slash had broken Paciorettys stick on a breakaway. I rounded the corner just in time to catch a glimpse of a replay showing the wild swing by Merrill coincide with the snap of Paciorettys stick shaft. No call resulted on the play and the initial commentary suggested a call was missed. I thought “oh no”, another missed stick slash on breakaway similar to one I viewed last week. Unaware of the time in the game this play had occurred I immediately sent out an S.O.S. via twitter; “Anybody see the broken-stick slash on a breakaway in NJ. Another non-penalty shot call. Guess they dont make sticks like they used to?” In the rush for social media assistance my misplaced question mark (?) logically appeared to some as though I was stating a call had been missed as opposed to seeking guidance. Once I was able to finally view the play it was obvious that Jon Merrills stick clearly missed making contact with both Max Pacioretty and his stick shaft. When Max pressured down on the shaft his stick simply broke. Both referree Rob Martell, who had set up in perfect position to judge the play on the ice, and Ray Ferraro on the TSN broadcast from between the benches made the right call.dddddddddddd Both men had the perfect sightline. The other play in question involved a pretty obvious trip/slew-foot by P.K. Subban that took down Patrik Elias just prior to David Desharnais tipping in Brian Giontas shot for the tying goal with just 36.6 seconds remaining (Incident can be seen at 1:33 of attached highlights). What wasnt so obvious on the play was that Elias set an illegal pick in an attempt to lockup up Subban and prevent his forecheck pinch with the Montreal net empty. With 44 seconds remaining Peter Budaj bolted to the bench for an extra attacker. In anticipation of this the trailing referee crossed the ice from his position near the Montreal players bench to appropriately observe the legal five-foot substitution required to replace Budaj. That was all well and good, save the fact that both referees were now on the same side of the ice; opposite to where Elias and Subban contacted one another resulting in two separate infractions. Had the trailing referee been afforded the opportunity to observe this play from his normal position (near blue line on players bench side) I am confident an arm would have been raised for a delayed penalty call once Patrik Elias leaned into Subban and then placed his stick across the midsection of the Habs star defenceman. Interference would have been the delayed call. Play would then quickly have been stopped once Subban, having been blocked by the illegal pick, extended his right skate behind the left leg of Elias and tripped the Devil player to the ice with a sneaky but obvious slew-foot. Coincidental minor penalties would have been assessed and Giontas shot would not have eventually found the back of the net on the Desharnais redirection. Gaining the best sightline is crucial in being able to accurately process information on every play. Sometimes that just isnt possible. As a result of the shootout win Subban and the Montreal Canadiens have to be very pleased this was just one of those times. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

Nick Diaz has signed a three-fight extension with the UFC, ending his retirement with the hopes of returning to action in 2015. Diaz has not fought in the octagon since March 2013, when he lost to then welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre at Bell Centre in Montreal. Its been a good experience having this much time off." Though there has been speculation that Diaz could possibly face former middleweight champion Anderson Silva, UFC president Dana White tweeted that the matchup is not yet in the works. LOS ANGELES -- The Clippers and Trail Blazers went back and forth for 48 minutes. When it was over, Los Angeles escaped with perhaps its most satisfying victory of the season -- and Portland was saddled with its second heartbreaking loss in 48 hours. Blake Griffin scored 36 points, Chris Paul had 20 points and 12 assists, and the Clippers beat the Trail Blazers 122-117 on Wednesday night in the final game for both teams before the All-Star break. The Clippers, who set a franchise record for largest victory Sunday in their 45-point thrashing of Philadelphia, converted 16 Portland turnovers into 20 points during a nip-and-tuck affair that included 40 lead changes. "We were up one, down one, up one," Paul said. "I told them in the timeout: Fellas, we need to get a score and a stop. I told B.G. if we get a score and a stop, it changes the whole game. It was frustrating because it was me making mistakes on defence, and they were getting shots. But all in all, it was a good win for us." The Clippers won for the 14th time in 19 games since Jan. 4, when the Spurs handed them their worst loss of the season, 116-92 in San Antonio. Paul made 10 of 15 shots in his second game back after missing 18 with a separated right shoulder. "Its definitely not (100 per cent)," he said. "But as long as Im not hindering my team and my teammates, I feel I can be effective out there." Jamal Crawford added 25 points for the defending Pacific Division champions, who go into All-Star weekend 37-18 -- their second-best winning percentage at the break in franchise history. They were 39-17 last season, when they finished 56-26 and won their first division title. Los Angeles and Portland are each 5 1/2 games behind Oklahoma City for the best record in the Western Conference. "Im in a great place, as far as our team going into the break," Paul said. "Its one of the best feelings Ive had about a team since Ive been in the league, just strictly because of defence. The biggest thing with us is that everyone has bought into the defensive end. We understand that we can score every night, but its going to be our defence that carries us." LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points and Damian Lillard had 21 for the Blazers, who are 5-8 since a five-game winning streak last month. The loss was their fifth straight to the Clippers at Staples Center. Clippers centre DeAndre Jordan had a miserable time trying to guard Aldridge in the first quarter, as the 6-foot-11 power forward made six of seven shots -- one night after going 5 for 22 from the field and scoring 12 points in Portlands 98-95 home loss to Oklahoma City. "Its tough, especially going into the break," Lillard said. "You want to go into it with some momentum and on a good note. We played two good games, but we just werent able to pull either game out." All of Aldridges first six baskets against the Clippers came from at least 17 feet away, including a 3-pointer that gave the Blazers a 30-25 lead with 1:42 left in the period. "Its the NBA. Youre not going to completely stop somebody from scoring," Jordan said. "I think they lead the league in scoring, but we did our best job tonight and we got stops when it counted." Los Angeles then went on a 12-0 run to go ahead 37-30 with 10:50 left in the second quarter, as backup point guard Darren Collison capped the rally with a layup and two free throws. Less than 7 1/2 minutes later, Griffin outleaped 7-1 centre Meyers Leonard on a lob above the basket by Paul and finished the alley-oop for a 53-52 edge with 3:28 left in the half. "Blakes dominance is something that we need. Hes been our MVP all season long," Paul said. "I keep telling him: I dont want to stop that. I dont want to hinder that. I just want to be a part of it." NOTES: Jordan had six rebounds in 37 minutes, ending his double-digit streak at 31 games. The franchise record is 42 by Swen Nater in 1977-78. ... Portland came in averaging an NBA-best 107.7 points, and the Clippers were second with 106.7 per game. ... The Blazers are the only team in the league to have the same starting lineup in every game -- Aldridge, Lillard, Wesley Matthews, Nicolas Batum and Robin Lopez. They all scored in double figures. ... Paul, who will be playing in his seventh All-Star game, scored his 11,000th career point on a short running jumper with 5:52 remaining. His 113 double-doubles since the start of the 2010-11 season are the most by any point guard during that stretch. ... Seven of Portlands next eight games are at home, where the Blazers are 19-6. Jason Pierre-Paul Giants Jersey . -- Tiger Woods is skipping the Match Play Championship in Arizona in two weeks. Owa Odighizuwa Giants Jersey MONTREAL -- Montreal Impact management are confident that new coach Frank Klopas will get the team back on track after a horrendous start to the Major League Soccer season. Sporting director Nick De Santis said Thursday that Klopas has done a good job preparing the club for games and that he still has the players support. The winless Impact (0-4-3), who were leading the league at this time last season, are last in MLS heading into a home game Saturday against the Philadelphia Union. "The coaches, I can guarantee you, from the first day have done good work," said De Santis. "You can see the intensity from the players in every practice. "Yes theres tension and pressure, less confidence, but thats pro sports. I think the team believes in the coach and will come out of this." There has been speculation about Klopas future among fans and media as the winless run to start the season -- the worst in the teams 21-year history including its pre-MLS days -- drags on. It hit a fever pitch after last weeks 4-0 loss at Kansas City. If Klopas is feeling the pressure, he didnt show it. "I know its about results," he said. "Im not here to make excuses. "Im very thankful to be part of this organization. I think Nick and all of us work hard. Thats all I can do. I dont think about the other stuff. The only thing I can do is prepare the team and make sure we do as well as we can to get the team back on track." The Impact will play their first game on the grass field at Saputo Stadium after three home games indoors at Olympic Stadium, where they had a loss and two draws. Another defeat -- in the first meeting between the clubs since Montreal sent Andrew Wenger to Philadelphia for Jack McInerney in a swap of strikers last month -- would put more heat on Klopas, the former Chicago Fire boss who replaced the fired Marco Schallibaum in December. There has also been criticism of De Santis, who made no major off-season moves despite a late-season tailspin and a one-sided loss to Houston in the first round of playoffs in 2013. "I understand the frustration," said De Santis. "Im from Montreal. "I live here every day and I know how people feel. They have a right to criticize and Im in a position where I have to accept that. But Im very confident in this team and that, with a few additions, we can improve this team." Since the start of training camp, the Impact have added former New York fullback Heath Pierce, little used forward Santiago Gonzalez, and made the McInerney trade. De Santis said he is looking at adding a third designated pllayer to go with striker Marco Di Vaio and midfielder Hernan Bernardello, and that he has his sights on Argentine midfielder Ignacio Piatti.dddddddddddd He wont be able to sign anyone until the July transfer period, however. In the meantime, the Impact have been pleading for patience. Team president Joey Saputo wrote this week on Twitter: "Very frustrating start to the season. We need and will turn this around. Lets stay focused and determined. More than ever, we need our fans." Despite their record, the Impact are only five points out of a playoff spot as the entire Eastern Conference has had trouble winning. Kansas City and Columbus share the conference lead with 11 points, including only three wins each in six games. De Santis said that missing Di Vaio for the opening three games to a suspension and injuries to Bernardello and midfielder Sanna Nyassi have hurt. He said the team has also been unlucky and could have won a game or two that slipped away. Missing injured central defenders Nelson Rivas and Adrian Lopez has also been a problem as veteran Matteo Ferrari has found himself working with youngsters most weeks. Lopez, who blew out a knee after only one game for Montreal last summer, had his first full-field practice Thursday, but is not yet ready to play. The oft-injured Rivas looked ready to return two weeks ago, but is back to running laps during practice. Ferrari said he hasnt given up hope. "I like the coach and the job hes doing because hes very professional," the former AS Roma and Everton defender said. "He likes the details and he prepares the game well. "Theres nothing I can say negative. If I look at the standings, its bad, but the first place team has three wins, not five or six. So lets win a couple of games and then well be talking about something else." Klopas also talked about Jeb Brovsky, a workhorse under Schallibaum last season who became a fan favourite for his toughness and his extensive work for charities and other causes. The third-year fullback has spent most of the season on the bench while Pearce played left fullback. Brovsky is likely to stay there for now. "He played on the left side and Im looking for more of a natural left-footed player," said Klopas. "On the right side, we have (Eric) Miller and (Hassoun) Camara, so theres competition. "Jeb has handled it well. But to be fair, when you put him on the left side, its not ideal, even if he played well last year. Im looking for a left-footed guy that can open up the field, that can get crosses in. But hell get opportunities." cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

MILWAUKEE -- Isaiah Thomas scored 25 points and had six assists to lead the Sacramento Kings to a 116-102 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. Rudy Gay added 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and DeMarcus Cousins had 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Kings, who won their ninth road game after finishing with an 8-33 record away from home last season. Sacramento opened its season-high seven-game, 12-day road trip by shooting 52 per cent (43-for-82) from the field. Brandon Knight finished with a team-high 25 points and six assists for Milwaukee, and Jeff Adrien added 15 points off the bench. Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Bruins announced Monday that the team has signed goaltender Niklas Svedberg to a one-year contract. The deal is a one-way pact with a cap hit of $600,000, making Svedberg the likely favorite to serve as the backup to Tuukka Rask next season. Chad Johnson, who served as the Bruins No. 2 netminder in 2013-14, is due to be an unrestricted free agent. Svedberg made his NHL debut on Jan. 2 and earned the win in Bostons 3-2 overtime decision against Nashville, stopping 33-of-35 shots. The 24-year-old Swede was named the American Hockey Leagues most outstanding goaltender for the 2012-13 campaign and compiled a 25-15-4 record with a 2.63 goals against average and two shutouts for Providence of the AHL last season. This week, they discuss the NFL and Ray Rice, questionable coaching decisions, FIFA and the Baseball Hall of Fame. Bruce Arthur, Toronto Star My thumb is down to the National Football League, which may sound familiar. The monster-truck league smashes anything in its path, from brain damage to PEDs to painkiller addiction, but this time its something else. Baltimore Ravens star running back Ray Rice knocked his fiancee unconscious in an elevator in the off-season. Still, the Ravens defended him. The NFLs typical suspension for drugs of any kind is four games; it just gave Minnesota special teams coach Mike Preifer three games for homophobic remarks. Knock a woman out? Two games. Pathetic. The only thing worse than the NFLs dismissal of domestic violence was the debate that followed, in which so many sad men made excuses for Rice. But then, after all, the NFL and the Ravens pretty much did it first. Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun My thumb is down to Chris Jones, the first year coach of the Edmonton Eskimos, for calling one of the most outrageous gambles Ive seen in more than 40 years of watching the Canadian Football League. Needless to say, the Eskimos didnt make the long first down, turned the ball over, annd one play later, bang, Calgary scored a touchdown, and guess what, the Stampeders wound up winning by less than the score of that TD.dddddddddddd. Now I like Chris Jones and I think hes going to be a terrific CFL head coach. But theres no place for high school logic in professional football. Cathal Kelly, Globe and Mail My thumb is up to FIFA - a rarity - for their refusal this week to pull the 2018 World Cup away from Russia. It would be satisfying to do so, and would please many of their critics. But, as footballs ruling body pointed out, no boycott has ever stopped a war and sports are an enormously positive force for change. The biggest tournament in the world will be a useful carrot in the coming years. Why apply the stick now? There will be time to reconsider this decision, but not until Russia has been forced to think hard about what it wants more in the international community - territorial gains or friends in the game. Dave Hodge, TSN My thumb is up to todays Baseball Hall of Fame class that numbers six inductees - former players Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas - and former managers Joe Torre, Tony LaRussa and Bobby Cox. In some of the coming years, we assume itll be tough to elect one Hall of Fame member, never mind six, because so many votes will be held back from candidates known to have used or thought to have used steroids. Ironic then, to see a class of six, requiring speeches shorter than usual. Baseball celebrates its best in a big way--while it can, before it cant. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

GUADALAJARA, Mexico -- Mexico is set to host its biggest sporting event since the 1986 World Cup, but it comes during some of the countrys most volatile times. Police officials are expected to outnumber athletes at the 2011 Pan American Games, which open Friday in Guadalajara as Games organizers have pledged to make security a top priority in a country ravaged by drug violence. Some 10,000 officers, from local, regional and federal forces, are expected to be deployed during the Games, which will bring 6,000 athletes to Guadalajara, including a Canadian contingent of almost 500. "Securitys a concern at all major Games. It was in Vancouver (for the 2010 Olympics), it was in Beijing (200, all over," said Canadas chef de mission Jacques Cardyn. "In Rio (for the 2007 Pan Ams) it was a huge concern. "We are confident the Games will be as (safe) as the other Games." Canada traditionally travels with RCMP officers to major Games, and the number of security officials has been increased for Mexico, Cardyn said. He would not specify how many. "Theyll be there," he said. "Theyve been working with the federal police in Mexico, theyve been working with the provincial and municipal police and theyve stayed in contact with (U.S. security officials), so were pretty confident they know where were going." Mexicos deadly drug war has killed more than 35,000 people since 2006. While the gruesome violence has been concentrated along the Mexico-U.S. border, the relative serenity of Guadalajara was shattered in February when grenades thrown at an entrance to a nightclub killed six people. Gunmen firing automatic weapons torched vehicles and blockaded roads. Athletes say they just have to trust in the security measures. "You do everything you can, you stay wise and hope for the best I guess," said Canadian squash player Stephanie Edmison. "I know that the security will be over the top for the Pan Ams. I know Mexico will make sure that the athletes are safe and I know that (Canadian officials) will ensure that Mexico is doing everything they can to secure the village and to secure us, which was done in India for the Commonwealth Games. "For such a high-profile event, I think that theyll be doing everything they can to make us safe, so its not my main concern." With Indias track record for terrorist attacks, there was a huge police presence at the Commonwealth Games last fall in New Delhi, India, where two tourists from Thailand were shot less than two weeks before the opening ceremonies. Signs were posted daily in the athletes village stating the terrorist threat level. New Delhi organizers also used 38 langur monkeys to guard the athletes village and venues, but the monkeys were there to guard against attacks by other animals. In a post on its website, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada warned "Canadians travelling to Mexico should exercise a high degree of caution due to a deteriorating security situation in many parts of the country." Athletes from 42 countries will compete in 39 sports at the Games, which run through Oct. 30. Nike Air Max 90 Svart . Not this season. And certainly not during most of Friday nights game against Louisville. But once again, late in the game with everything on the line, they figured things out just in time. Aaron Harrison hit a 3-pointer for the go-ahead score with 39 seconds left and Julius Randle made a pair of clutch free throws to lift the fantastic freshmen of Kentucky to a 74-69 victory over their in-state rivals. The eighth-seeded Wildcats (27-10) led for a grand total of 65 seconds in this Midwest Regional semifinal. Theyll play Michigan on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four. "I told them before the game, youll get punched in the mouth and youre going to taste blood," coach John Calipari said. "You can fight or you can brace yourself for the next shot. They fought." Fourth-seeded and defending champion Louisville ends its season at 31-7. Few expected a run this deep for the Wildcats as this season played out and their five freshmen starters struggled to play a team game. But theyve been learning slowly. They trailed by 13 midway through the first half, then by seven with 4 1/2 minutes left. Suddenly, things kicked in. Actually, it was a sophomore, Alex Poythress, who scored five points and blocked a Russ Smith layup attempt during a 7-0 run that tied the game at 66 with 2:11 left. "Alex Poythress won the game for us," Calipari said. "We were begging him the whole game to start playing, and he played at the right time." From there, it was the Kentucky freshmen -- the Kiddie Cats -- who showed all the poise against the defending national champs, who were led by seniors Smith (23 points) and Luke Hancock (19). Harrison took a pass from Julius Randle and spotted up in the corner for the go-ahead shot. Both finished with 15 points, as did yet another freshman starter, Dakari Johnson. On the next possession, Louisvilles Wayne Blackshear got fouled. The 71 per cent career free throw shooter missed the first. Randle came down and made two free throws to put Kentucky ahead by three. Harrison guarded Smith and forced him to miss a tough 3-pointer on the next possession -- "His first stop of the game," Calipari quipped. A few seconds later, the Wildcats were chest bumping and Calipari wass pumping his fists to a loud stadium that was about two-thirds Kentucky blue, one-third Cardinals red.dddddddddddd Kentucky has now knocked off previously undefeated Wichita State, defending national champion Louisville and has a meeting with last years runner-up, Michigan, coming next. Earlier, the Wolverines beat Tennessee 73-71. The latest win for Kentucky was the ultimate lesson in patience for a team that, for so long, had trouble showing any. They were touted on T-shirts as the team that would go 40-0 and win the national title, then all head off to the NBA. Two out of three is still possible. "They finally have surrendered and lost themselves in the team," Calipari said. "Its just taken a long time." Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who fell to 11-1 in Sweet 16 games, produced a matchup zone that the Wildcats had trouble working through. The Cards took the double-digit lead early, yet went to halftime only up three despite holding Kentucky to 33 per cent from the floor. The difference in Pitinos mind: Louisville went 13 for 23 from the free throw line while Kentucky went 22 for 27. And the Wildcats had a 37-29 rebounding edge, which also led to eight more second-chance points. "I told them we probably beat ourselves a little bit down the stretch," Pitino said. "But how can any of us complain with the run weve been on?" Louisvilles string of Final Fours will end at two and there will be a new national champion. Making this win even more impressive for the Wildcats: They played almost the entire game without Willie Cauley-Stein, an NBA-caliber forward who sprained his left ankle early. "Its not a good ankle injury, let me just put it that way," Calipari said. Another NBA prospect, James Young, fouled out with 5:32 left. That left it to Harrison, his twin brother, Andrew (14 points) and Randle, a lottery pick in waiting who was a monster inside. He had 12 rebounds to go with the 15 points. Hes had a double-double in all three tournament games. Calipari makes no apologies for recruiting the best talent and taking his chances theyll leave before they really set up shop at Kentucky. That strategy helped him bring the eighth national title back home two years ago. Now, Kentucky is a win away from the programs 16th trip to the Final Four. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The handshakes and backslaps exchanged in the Miami Dolphins locker room late Sunday afternoon were gestures of consolation, not celebration, before players quietly slipped out the back door at the end of another disappointing season. Miami was eliminated from the scramble for the AFCs final wild-card berth by the New York Jets, who thrived in the role of spoilers against their archrivals and won 20-7. The Dolphins blew an early lead to complete a December collapse that will keep them out of the playoffs for a fifth straight year. "Its definitely going to take a little while to get over this one," quarterback Ryan Tannehill said. New Yorks Geno Smith led three long scoring drives, ran for a touchdown and threw for 190 yards, while two interceptions by rookie Dee Milliner and one by 35-year-old Ed Reed prevented a Miami comeback. The Dolphins (8- squandered a shot at their first post-season berth since 2008 by losing the final two games to non-playoff teams, including a shutout defeat at last-place Buffalo. It was a dismal end to a roller-coaster season that included a four-game losing streak, a bullying scandal that drew national scrutiny, and a December surge that briefly left the Dolphins in control of their playoff destiny -- but turned out to be a tease. "Our record is 8-8, and thats the definition of average," cornerback Brent Grimes said. "We felt like we could be a much better than average team, so were disappointed. We messed up in the last two games. Weve just got to live with that." The Dolphins were outscored 39-7 in those final two games. Now owner Stephen Ross must decide whether to shake up a regime led by second-year coach Joe Philbin and sixth-year general manager Jeff Ireland. "You have to earn your way into the playoffs. Clearly we didnt do that," Philbin said. "The results start with me. The head coach is responsible for the results. The offence, the defence, the special teams, the record -- it starts with me. Lets not stand here and blame the players." The Jets (8- celebrated as though theyre playoff-bound but will sit out the post-season for the third year in a row. After the game, owner Woody Johnson announced that coach Rex Ryan would return for a sixth season in 2014. Ryan, whose future had been in question, said Johnson gave him the news before the game. When players were told afterward, they cheered in the locker room. "Ill say this -- I love being the head coach of the New York Jets, plain and simple," Ryan said. "You put everything youve got into it. I never wanted to go out this way. Weve missed the playoffs three straight years, and that bothers me, no question." The Jets made sure they were joined on the post-season sideline by Miami. The only points of the seasons final two weeks for the Dolphins put them ahead 7-0 in the second quarter, but the Jets rallied by mounting touchdown drives of 71 and 80 yards on their final possessions of the first half. When Smith scored on a 7-yard, third-down keeper up the middle with 3 seconds left for a 14-7 lead at halftime, an excited Ryan ran on the field to celebrate with his players. Fans were booing in the first half and streaming for the exits in the final minutes. Smith drove the Jets 63 yards to set up a field goal that gave them a 17-7 cushion with 4:18 left, and on the next play Reed grabbed a deflected pass for his 64th career interception to all but seal the victory. Milliner stopped a Miami threat in the third quarter with a diving interception of Tannehill one play after Mike Wallace dropped a potential touchdown pass that would have tied the game. The Jets played like a team with nothing to lose, which they were, and eager to spoil Miamis season. They kept the Dolphins off balance with swarming defence and imaginative play-calling, including 294-pound defensive lineman Sheldon Richardsons 1-yard plunge for his second rushing touchdown this season. Running back Bilal Powell threw a 30-yard completion to set up the Jets field goal. Dolphins receiver Brian Hartline left the game in the first quarter with a left knee injury, while Wallace and Tannehill found it difficult to click all day. Tannehill overthrew an open Wallace deep, and Wallace slipped and fell on Milliners first interception. They did combine for a 5-yard touchdown to cap an 89-yard drive. But the Dolphins running game sputtered, as usual, and Tannehill finished with a woeful passer rating of 42.1. "It cant get worse than this," Wallace said. "We let them win. We let them dominate the game. We knew what we had on the line, and we didnt come up with the plays we needed." Notes: Hartline limped out of the game after a 25-yard reception that put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the second year in a row. ... Jets reserve CB Kyle Wilson left in the first half with a knee injury and didnt return. ... Before the game, former LB-DE Kim Bokamper, WR O.J. The medal -- being auctioned online -- recalls both the Nazi propaganda myths that Owens busted with his world record-setting 100-yard dash, and the American segregation that he came home to when he returned to the U.S. after the Games, which Adolf Hitler had orchestrated to showcase his ideas of Aryan supremacism. "Almost singlehandedly, Owens obliterated Hitlers plans," SCP Auctions partner Dan Imler said. "Youve got an African American, son of a sharecropper, grandson of slaves who overcame these incredible circumstances and delivered a performance for the ages." Owens won gold in the 100- and 200-metres, the 400 relay and the long jump. But when he returned from the Berlin Games, he struggled to provide for his family. His job options were limited by segregation and because he decided to return home instead of going on tour with the U.S. Olympic Team, he was stripped of his amateur athletic status. "When they came back, the U.S. was just as it was when he left -- segregated. Even though he came back an Olympic hero, he wasnt offered opportunities that Olympic heroes of today are offered," said his daughter, Marlene Owens Rankin, 74, of Chicago. "We lived well, a middle class life. We didnt want for much. But llike many black men of that era, he struggled to provide for his family.dddddddddddd" Owens gave one of his four Olympic gold medals to dancer and movie star Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, another supremely talented African-American whose career was hemmed in by limited roles for black men, Imler said. Robinson befriended Owens after the athlete return from the Olympics. "They formed a friendship and also a professional relationship. Bojangles helped Owens get work in the entertainment field," Imler said. "Owens gave him this medal out of gratitude and as a token of their friendship." Owens worked for a short time as a band leader but eventually returned to his hometown of Cleveland where he worked for the parks department and eventually found his way into public speaking, his daughter said. "The black community revered him for what he had accomplished," she said. "Had it been an even playing field, my father and Bojangles would have been super-stars." The medal comes from the estate of Robinsons widow. The Robinson family declined to comment but Imler said they plan to use the proceeds to pay college tuition and contribute to charity. SCP Auctions confirmed that the medal is genuine. The whereabouts of the other three original gold medals is unknown. "We just hope that its purchased by an institution where the public could have access to it, a museum or something like that," his daughter said. The auction closes on Dec. 7. cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '

DURHAM, N.C. -- Jabari Parker had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 6 Duke beat UNC Asheville 91-55 on Monday night in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Rodney Hood had 15 of his 18 points in the first half for the Blue Devils (3-1), who never trailed and shot 57 per cent. Duke held a 42-28 rebounding advantage, built a 20-point first-half lead and coasted to its 104th straight nonconference win at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Sam Hughes scored 16 points for the Bulldogs (1-3). They shot 33 per cent and never got closer than 18 points in the second half. UNC Asheville was beaten soundly by its second top-10 opponent in 11 days after being routed 89-57 by then-No. 1 Kentucky. Andre Dawkins had 13 points and Quinn Cook and freshman Semi Ojeleye added 10 apiece to help Duke improve to 23-2 in the preseason NIT. The Blue Devils have won the tournament four times and two of those titles came during their most recent national championship seasons in 2000-01 and 2009-10. And once again, Hood and Parker did most of the heavy lifting for Dukes offence. In all four games, the Blue Devils have been led in scoring by either Hood or Parker. Hood was coming off a career-high 28-point performance last time out against Florida Atlantic. Also in that game, Parker became the first Duke freshman under coach Mike Krzyzewski with at least 20 points in each of the first three games of his career. Parker wasted little time making it four in a row, scoring 14 in the first half while finishing 8 of 13 from the field. And Hood turned in several highlight-reel plays during his 6-for-8 night: His personal 7-0 run gave Duke its first 20-point lead. Hoods jumper after a pretty behind-the-back dribble came two possessions before a posterizing dunk, and a 3-pointer from the corner made it 44-24 with just under 4 minutes before halftime. Perhaps lost in the shuffle, high-energy forward Amile Jefferson did the dirty work that led to the run by Hood that put this one out of reach. On three consecutive defensive series, Jefferson got a hand in the face of 7-footer Jaleel Roberts during a jumper, grabbed a key rebound and forced the steal from Hughes that set up Hoods 3. Just as in the Blue Devils previous two home games, they built such a big early lead that the drama-free second half afforded plenty of chances to show off. And no sequence was prettier than Parkers reverse dunk of Cooks open-court alley-oop feed with 12 1/2 minutes left. David Robertson added 12 points for UNC Asheville, which made just its second visit to Cameron and first since 2008. The Bulldogs once again were without forward Will Weeks, who averages 13 points but missed his second straight game with a knee injury. Tyler Lockett Youth Jersey . For the second game in a row, the Athletics won despite squandering a 4-0 lead. They also overcame a blown save by Sean Doolittle, whose streak of 26 2-3 innings ended when Miami scored the tying run in the ninth. Atletico, unbeaten in three games under Simeone, caught a lacklustre Sociedad flatfooted in the opening moments of both halves to go up 2-0 as rain fell steadily on Anoeta Stadium. Falcao stroked home a spot kick to give the visitors the lead just three minutes in following Vadim Demidovs booking for a handball inside the area, and strike partner Adrian Lopez volleyed in his own rebound after Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo blocked his header in the 47th. Jeff Gilbert (signed as a free agent) and Brodie Merrill (acquired via trade), both check-in at 64 and give the Rock an injection of size on the back end. Nick Diachenko, who was signed as a free agent last season, has re-signed with the Rock for 2015. Diachenko was originally selected in the 2nd round of the 2013 NLL Draft by the Buffalo Bandits. After battling through injuriies, Diachenko got his shot with the Rock when Rock forward Garrett Billings suffered a season ending knee injury.dddddddddddd Projected to be a defender, Diachenkos stick skills and finish in practice impressed the Rock coaching staff enough to put him into an offensive role when he was moved to the teams active roster. The 24-year old native of Courtice, ON didnt disappoint, scoring a goal in his first NLL game. In 3 regular season games, Diachenko scored two goals and added two assists for four points.
