WASHINGTON -- After a cautious start, the Washington Redskins made their first big move of free agency, luring former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Jason Hatcher with a four-year, $27.5 million contract, according to a person familiar with the deal. Hatcher agreed to terms Thursday, according to a person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been signed. He gives the Redskins a much-needed pass rush from the defensive line to supplement linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan. Hatcher was one of the days several moves aimed at upgrading the defence of a 3-13 team. The Redskins also agreed to a one-year contract with free agent linebacker Darryl Sharpton, according to another person familiar with the deal who also spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract had not yet been signed. The Redskins also signed former Oakland Raiders cornerback Tracy Porter, according to reports. The team announced that it signed defensive end Clifton Geathers and that receiver Santana Moss had signed his contract, a one-year deal reached on Tuesday. Hatcher, 31, has played eight seasons with the Cowboys, but he didnt become a regular starter until 2011. He had 11 sacks last year, including two against the Redskins in a 31-16 Cowboys win at Dallas in October, and was selected to his first Pro Bowl. Sharpton has started 19 games over four seasons with the Houston Texans, including eight starts last year after Brian Cushing went down with a knee injury. He could be a candidate to replace inside linebacker London Fletcher, who is expected to retire, and could also help improve the Redskins struggling special teams. Geathers has been a backup for four teams over four NFL seasons. He spent last year with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is the nephew of James "Jumpy" Geathers, a 13-year NFL veteran who played for the Redskins from 1990-92. The Redskins were still searching for solutions at safety. Ryan Clark, who played for the Redskins in 2004-05 before leaving for eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was among the free agents who visited Redskins Park on Thursday. The Redskins spent the first two days of free agency making modest signings while losing out in the bidding for bigger names. Theyve added a No. 2 receiver (Andre Roberts), a potential starting guard (Shawn Lauvao) and a special teams contributor (Adam Hayward). cheap jerseys from china . It was the Jets 42nd one-goal game of the year; they have won 19 of them. The goal was unassisted.? Wheeler then set up Dustin Byfuglien for his 20th of the year to give the Jets their first lead. It was Byfugliens eighth power play goal of the year. He has now tied his career high for goals, points and power play goals. Byfuglien has 24 points on the Jets 37 power play goals. It was his seventh goal in the last nine games. Frolik picked up his second point of the game with an assist on the goal. Shots in the second were 10-9 San Jose with the Jets up 3-2. For the second straight game the Jets surrendered two ppower play goals against, as Logan Couture pulled the Sharks even at 11:23.dddddddddddd The Sharks then got themselves in penalty trouble as while killing a penalty, Couture put a clearing attempt over the glass and for 10 seconds the Jets had a 5-on-3. The Sharks killed that off but with a one-man advantage Wheeler set up Toby Enstrom for the game winner at 16:24. Little also drew an assist, giving him 10 points in the last 10 games, and 25 points in his last 28 games. The three point night gives Wheeler 11 points in the last seven games and 31 points in the last 30 games. He has 62 points on the season, two shy of his career high. It was his third three point game of the season. Enstroms goal was his ninth of the year, one shy of his career high. Enstrom is now 2-7-9 in his last 7 games. It was his third power play goal of the year and only the Jets 12th power play road goal of the year with three so far on this road trip. Shots in the third were 12-9 Jets and 31-30 Jets on the game, as Al Montoya in his sixth straight start, picked up his 13th win of the season. Jacob Trouba again led the team in ice time, as he played 24:53. Andrew Ladd had seven shots on goal, one shy of his single-game career high. Trouba had six shots on goal. Jim Slater was 75% in the face off department, winning six-of-eight. Paul Maurice was very impressed with his top players, especially Wheeler. “He just keeps getting stronger and more powerful. He does so much for our team.” On Ladds goal that tied the game early in the first: “it was big, settled our bench down.” On the win: “Its the first time weve talked about the playoff race. Its a huge hill to climb, but we cant look at that as the reason we played hard. We have to play hard for faith and confidence in the room.” ' ' '

Carrolls strong defence and Kyle Korvers three 3-pointers in Atlantas dominant third quarter led the Hawks past Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers 114-100 Monday night. Bryant, playing in only his fifth game since returning from a torn left Achilles tendon, made only 4 of 14 shots for eight points. Bryant said his left ankle "felt a little stiff on me." "The next level of progression is playing these games when you sit back out, get back in, is keeping it loose," Bryant said. "Its just a matter of time. You increase the activity, the ankle gets used to it a little more. "Ive just got to keep my eye on the big picture and focus on getting better." Bryant and the Lakers faded badly in the second half after leading at 54-47 at halftime. "Thats why I wanted to pick him up full-court, to get his legs tired," Carroll said. "His shots were falling short because his legs were tired." Al Horford had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead six Atlanta players in double figures. Paul Millsap had 18 points and Jeff Teague had 17 with 10 assists as the Hawks set season highs for points in a game and second half (67). Carroll had 13 points but took the most pride in his defence on Bryant, who struggled two days after scoring 21 points in a win at Charlotte. "I love it," Carroll said, adding his goal is to make the NBA all-defensive team. "Thats what they brought me here to do, play defence. ... Each year Im trying to make the defensive team because I think I can be one of the lock-down defenders." Nick Young led the Lakers with 23 points while making five 3-pointers. Jordan Hill had 21, Xavier Henry had 18 and Pau Gasol had 16, but no other Los Angeles player scored in double figures. The Lakers were outscored 35-19 in the third period. "I thought they came out much more aggressive, much more physical, every loose ball, every long rebound," Lakers coach Mike DAAntoni said.dddddddddddd "We just wilted. ... We didnt gut it out tonight." Korver scored all of his 11 points in the third period. "In the third quarter, I thought our aggressiveness and our intensity on the defensive end set the tone for a good second half," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "Great intensity. Great aggressiveness and I think we played off of our defence. We moved the ball well. We found the open guy. Thats how we want to play." The intensity showed on the boards. The Lakers had a 28-17 advantage in rebounds in the first half. The Hawks flipped that advantage by winning the second-half battle 27-15. "In the second half, on both ends, we really attacked the boards," Budenholzer said. Bryant made his third straight start at point guard as the Lakers attempt to compensate for the loss of three injured point guards -- Steve Nash, Jordan Farmar and Steve Blake. The Lakers other starting guard, Jodie Meeks, made only 1 of 8 shots for 2 points. Bryant had six assists and five turnovers and appeared to lack his normal energy. "Thats going to happen," DAntoni said. "We have to do a better job of taking the burden off him." Korver and the Hawks struggled early. Korver missed two 3-pointers on one possession about 3 minutes into the game and was 0 for 4 on 3s in the half. Korver made a short-range jumper midway through the third quarter, and that seemed to end his cold shooting. He quickly followed with two 3-pointers, extending his NBA record to 94 consecutive games with at least one 3. He added his third 3 minutes later. Korvers string of eight straight points sparked a 17-2 run. NOTES: Hawks F Elton Brand blocked three shots. ... Teague was called for a technical foul for criticizing a call at the end of the first half. Bryant missed the free throw before the start of the second half. ... Farmar (left hamstring tear) ran light sprints before the game for the first time in two weeks. ... MILWAUKEE -- Nyjer Morgan said he felt absolutely no pressure when hitting with two outs in the ninth inning. Thats because he believed it was the eighth. Morgan was still laughing in the clubhouse after his game-winning double and Prince Fielder was all smiles, too, after hitting two homers in the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night. "Seriously, I honestly thought Prince put us up and I thought it was the bottom of the eighth," Morgan said. "I guess it worked out, and a good thing for us." Morgans reaction on the field seemed to confirm he had no idea what happened. Milwaukee trailed 6-2 before scoring four times in the eighth, capped by Fielders second two-run blast. Craig Counsell singled with one out in the ninth off Dale Thayer (0-1) and stole second when Rickie Weeks struck out. Morgan then hit a ball down the right-field line to end it, but rounded first before starting to look back. He reached second for a double and was mobbed by Fielder. Both of them were chuckling at the highlights on the clubhouse TVs. "When he looked back, thats why he got so excited, on top of already being excited," said Fielder, who has six homers in the last six games. "It was like double the excitement because he was going to call a timeout at second." Ronny Paulino hit a three-run homer for the Mets as part of a five-run eighth that made it 6-2, but New Yorks bullpen couldnt hold it. John Axford (2-1) pitched the ninth for the win. Milwaukee has the best home mark in the majors at 22-8 and havent lost consecutive games at home all season. The Mets saw their three-game winning streak snapped after winning the opener in this series on Tuesday night. Milwaukees bullpen had a 1.88 earned-run average over its previous 72 innings before Kameron Loes disaster in the eighth with the Brewers ahead 2-1. Jose Reyes singled and stole second and Justin Turner walked before New York snapped an 0-for-7 streak with runners in scoring position when Carlos Beltran doubled down the right-field line to tie it. Angel Pagan followed with an RBI single to give New York a 3-2 lead and a bigger celebration followed when Paulino hit his first homer in a Mets uniform three batters later. Reyes bounced through the dugout, giving Paulino a two-fisted bump along the way, but the good feelings wouldnt last. "Its nothing new," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Right now, theres an empty feeling because we thought we had that one pretty much wrapped up." Fielder and the rest of the Brewers felt it was close to over, too, but Milwaukee answered right back against the Mets bullpen, which came in as one of the worst in the National League with a 4.29 ERA. "That eighth inning was tough," Fielder said. "But weve been playing hard all year, even when were down. We knew if we went out there and at least tried to, not necessarily come back, but just try to do our job and have good at-bats and just do something." Ryan Braun hit a two-run double off Pedro Beato to cut it to 6-4 after Counsell walked and Morgan singled. Fielder added an opposite-field blast off Jason Isringhausen that tied it at 6-6. "We talk about the good teams and how this has to happen through the season," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "The more times you do it, the more confidence you have that youre going to do it. And then it becomes a thing where its no big deal to be down two, three, four runs. Then it becomes a great team." Fielder passed Gorman Thomas for third on Milwaukees all-time home run list with 209. "I made a mistake," Isringhausen said. "I knew I had first base open, and as hot as hes been, I shouldnt give him anything to hit right there." Reyes has been New Yorks biggest spark recently. He extended his hitting streak to 12 with a double to lead off the game. Reyes also reached in the third on a walk before doing the most damage in the eighth, when he singled to extend his majors-best mark of 30 multihit games that set the stage for the rally the bullpen couldnt protect. New York scored first when Brewers starter Randy Wolf was called for a balk in the fourth, but Braun singled in the bottom of the inning and Fielder laced a shot off Mets starter Mike Pelfrey to put Milwaukee up 2-1. It would be all the offence for either side until the wild eighth. "Its fun," Fielder said. "Not good on your heart, but its fun." NOTES: It was Fielders 21st multihomer game of his career. ... Next up for Fielder on the franchise home run list is Geoff Jenkins, who has 212. ... Brewers 3B Casey McGehee snapped a streak of 27 hitless at-bats with a single in the seventh. cheap jerseys from china . He got an answer for that question on Saturday night. Poreda pitched two scoreless innings to get the win when the Texas Rangers held off the Seattle Mariners for a 6-3 victory Saturday night. Mitch Moreland drove in Prince Fielder with a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth, and Texas added two more runs in the ninth. It was Poredas first victory since June 25, 2009, for the Chicago White Sox against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "Its amazing just to be back," Poreda said. "Its amazing to be put in the opportunity to get a win." Poreda (1-0) allowed one hit, struck out two and issued an intentional walk. With two runners on in the seventh inning, Poreda struck out Kyle Seager with a slider to keep the game tied at 3. "He threw strikes, had a good changeup working," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "It helped us tremendously that he gave us those two innings." Texas added two more runs in the ninth against Joe Beimel. Leonys Martin scored on a wild pitch and Fielder singled in Elvis Andrus to give Texas a 6-3 cushion. Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save in six chances. Poreda is getting more work due in part to Pedro Figueroa landing on the disabled list with left elbow inflammation. But Poreda thinks there is room in the bullpen for both left-handers when Figueroa returns. He also isnt planning to wait another five years to get his next victory. "I have a lot higher expectations and goals than just one win. This is just the start of a great season," Poreda said. In the leadoff spot for the first time this season, Michael Saunders homered off Colby Lewis to give the Mariners an early 1-0 lead.dddddddddddd Seager led off the second with another homer and then scored on Mike Zuninos sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Rangers appeared to be in trouble, down 3-0 with Felix Hernandez on the mound for Seattle. But Texas managed to run up Hernandezs pitch count and broke through for three runs in the fifth inning. Singles from Moreland, Donnie Murphy and Martin loaded the bases with no outs. Robinson Chirinos drew a walk on four pitches to push Moreland across for the Rangers first run. Michael Choice singled in another run and Andrus sacrifice fly tied it at 3. "They were swinging at the first pitch and I was making a mistake staying in the middle of the plate and they were able to put a good swing on it," Hernandez said. "Three straight hits and after that, I dont even remember the last time I walked somebody on four straight pitches with the bases loaded." Hernandez allowed five hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked three. Charlie Furbush (0-2) got the loss. NOTES: Texas is expected to activate LHP Matt Harrison from the 15-day disabled to start Sundays series finale. Harrison hasnt appeared in a game since April 6, 2013. TAMPA, Fla. -- Derek Jeter pulled into the parking lot of the New York Yankees minor league complex on Thursday, walked out of his grey Mercedes-Benz and waved a hand holding a bottle of mineral water as about 50 fans applauded his mere arrival. After taking batting practice in an indoor cage and throwing on a field, he drove out of the parking lot about 90 minutes later -- the car cleaned and polished, its silver hub caps shining. He stopped and rolled down the drivers side window to sign photographs, baseballs and other memorabilia for the first dozen people or so who had waited in line. Already the most adored player on the baseball team with the highest profile, the New York Yankees captain figures to be the recipient of an ever-heightened level of adulation during the next 7 1/2 months as he circumnavigates the major leagues in a farewell tour that could be called Pinstriped Parting 2 following Mariano Riveras emotional exit last year. Asked whether he felt good about the decision he announced Wednesday, Jeter responded: "I do." But he didnt want to get into an extended discussion. Jeter will hold a news conference at Steinbrenner Field next Wednesday, the reporting day for the teams position players. "Ill address it when we get over there the first day of spring. Its easier that way," he said. Jeter took the Yankees by surprise with his Wednesday morning telephone call to owner Hal Steinbrenner, and his Facebook announcement later in the day jolted fans accustomed for nearly two decades to the constants of his hot hitting and cool demeanour. Speculation began about a suitable replacement: Hanley Ramirez, Asdrubal Cabrera and J.J. Hardy are among the players eligible for free agency after the season. "I wish hed have quit in 05," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said, laughing, remembering Jeters many performances against his Boston Red Sox. "If youre a baseball fan, he is the walking example of whats good in baseball. You respect him so much, and yet you want him to have as little to do with the outcome of the game if youre his opponent -- and thats probably the biggest compliment you can give him. Hes going to find a way to beat you whether its on the bases, on defence or at the plate. "And again, because I was in that division, I saw it too much," Francona went on. "He ranks right up there with the most respected players. Im glad hes walking away on his own terms. Well probably get to see him seven, eight times. I hope he goes 0 for 28 and we give him a nice plaque or something, but I dont see that really happening." By Wednesday night the Yankees had sent out an email with links to Jeter gear and ticket information. They announced Thursday that general individual ticket sales will start Feb. 24 -- up from March 5 last year. Stubhubs lowest price for the Yankees regular-season home finale on Sept. 25 was $307.50 for a single upper-deck seat and its highest was a fanciful $66,432.90 for a pair in the bleachers. Asking amounts for game No. 162 at Boston three days later were similarly inflated. Mariano Riveras farewell season turned into a marketing opportunity, Already Steiner Sports is selling Jeter game-used equipment that includes jerseys ($15,000 and up), cleats ($1,049.99 and up), batting gloves ($599.99 and up) and even a sock ($525). "This was all sudden. Well sit with Derek and Casey and his people and come up with a plan," Yankees President Randy Levine said, referring to Jeters agent, Casey Close. Jeter had no desire to switch positions or change teams. He wanted to be a member of the Yankees and a shortstop, and nothing else. He was limited to 17 games last season after breaking an ankle in the 2012 playoffs, and he turns 40 in June. He could join Luis Aparicio and Ozzie Smith as the only one-position players with 2,500 or more major league games, according to STATS. If he is able to regain his place on a regular basis, he would be a superannuated shortstop. Only Honus Wagner (1914, 15), Luke Appling (47, 49) and Omar Vizquel (2007) have appeared in 100 or more games at the position in the year they turned 40 or later. "With the captain, its an experience Im going to tell all my kids and the people that I know," Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli said, "because I think hes the greatest player Ive ever seen in my life." NOTES: Masahiro Tanaka also was at the complex, wearing a Yankees T-shirt and shorts, and threw a bullpen session of about two dozen pitches. Jeter joked about having to learn more Japanese to communicate with Tanaka. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Tanaka threw two- and four-seam fastballs, splitters and sliders. "It was good. Hes still trying to catch up I think with the time change and everything. Just trying to ease him into things," he said. "Were going to go slow with it." ... BOSTON -- Felix Doubront gave the Boston Red Sox a quality start and the bullpen took care of the rest. Perfectly, in fact. Doubront worked six innings, allowing one run on three hits, before relievers Andrew Miller, Vicente Padilla and Alfredo Aceves took over and didnt allow even a baserunner to lead the Red Sox over the Cleveland Indians 4-1 on Saturday night. "I did what was expected. Everyone did a good job," said Doubront, who has won his last two starts. "I got the plan a couple of days ago. It was what I expected. It worked for me. I was keeping the ball down." It was an unusual night all around at Fenway Park, where games have repeatedly topped 3 or more hours this season with the last-place Red Sox on the losing end more often than not. This one lasted just 2 1/2 hours with the Red Sox celebrating their second straight victory -- the clubs first winning streak in May. "Its one of those things. We need to win and thats what we did tonight," catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. "Two games in a row." The Red Sox had allowed four or more runs in their last 12 games since a 1-0 shutout of the Chicago White Sox, which also happened to be the last time Boston was on a winning streak. "It was a really nice game," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "Everyone did their job. I can tell you that Cody Ross home run was a little breathing room that I think was really good." Ross hit a solo shot in the sixth, just after the Indians had pulled within 3-1 in the top half. Cleveland starter Zach McAllister was still looking strong, striking out Will Middlebrooks and Daniel Nava for two quick outs and had a 1-2 count on Ross, but he left the next pitch over the plate and Ross drove it all the way out of the park -- clearing the Green Monster and sign above it with several feet to spare for his sixth homer of the season. "I thought it was a decent pitch. Obviously it wasnt in far enough as I would have liked," said McAllister, recalled earlier Saturday from Triple-A Columbus. "I just didnt get it in enough." McAllister (1-1) finished with a career-high eight strikeouts in seven innings, allowing eight hits and not walking anybody. But he didnt get much offensive help as the Indians struggled against the left-handed Doubront. "We couldnt get any offence going against Doubront. He was pitching to both sides of the plate," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "He just neutralized all of our left-handed hitters and even our switch-hitters." The Indians didnt fare any better against Bostons relievers. Aceves got his seventh save with a perfect ninth, striking out Carlos Santana to end it. Doubront was pulled before the seventh after throwing 109 pitches through six innings. He walked two and struck out five. The Red Sox have won two straight, their first winning streak since a 5-0 stretch at the end of April. Dustin Pedroia put Boston up 1-0 in the third with a double high off the wall in left field, driving in Mike Aviles after he led off the inning with a single. David Ortiz followed with a line drive to deep left-centre and rumbled his way to second safely for an RBI double. Nava led off the fourth with a single, went to third on Saltalamacchias ground-rule double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aviles. The fly ball to left wasnt particularly deep and Shelley Duncan made a great throw to home, but Nava slid between catcher Lou Marsdons legs just ahead of the tag. Marsdon led off the sixth with a double to right, went to third on a fielders choice and scored Clevelands first run on Jason Kipnis infield single. That was all Cleveland would score in its second straight loss. Notes: McAllister was making just his second start of the season for the Indians. Marsdon ended an 0-for-13 slump with a leadoff double in the sixth. ... Clevelands Travis Hafner was thrown out in the second while trying to stretch a single into a double. ... DUBLIN, Ohio -- Almost two weeks before hell play it with a U.S. Open on the line, Tiger Woods tested his game at The Olympic Club on Tuesday. Then, he sat down on a comfy red couch and mingled with a group of hand-picked fans in an online chat that touched on everything from if he can regain his winning ways to whether hes still having fun playing golf. "Were excited about what were working on. I hadnt played well in a couple of weeks but we know what it is," Woods said of problems in his swing that have been addressed by him and swing coach Sean Foley. "Its a matter of getting reps in and getting the trust in it." Woods took questions from several fans including a sergeant with the Ohio National Guard, Olympic triple-jump hopeful Erica McLain and others. NBC golf analyst Roger Maltbie also participated in the 34-minute chat -- called a "hangout." Woods practiced at Olympic earlier in the day. He said he hit a 9-iron into one green on the Lake Course that bounced flag high. "Its going to be one heck of a test," Woods said. After playing in temperatures in the 40s, Woods -- wearing a black cap and black sweater with a blue shirt peeking through at the collar -- went on a webcam for his close-up. Woods has won 14 majors, but none since the 2008 U.S. Open. He was headed Tuesday evening for the Memorial, founded by Jack Nicklaus, who won a record 18 majors. That remains Woods ultimate goal. "I figure its going to take a career," Woods said. "It took Jack 24 years. This is my 17th year into it. I still feel like Ive got plenty of time. Its about giving myself the most amount of opportunities to win them on the back nine on Sunday. The more chances I give myself, I figure Im going to clip a few of them." There were few if any revelations in the chat. This is the second time this year that Woods has not met with reporters at a tournament but instead reached out to friends and fans online. Speaking after a practice round at the Memorial, Masters champion Bubba Watson was asked if he would consider going online to reach out to his biggest fans. "Tigers online chat? I actually think its neat. I can see that working out for me," he said. "Again, I dont come to the media centre as much as he does, so I still like this. I feel cool up here. Yeah, I could see doing something like that, but Id still come to the local media and talk here. He does it every week no matter how he plays, so its still new to me." Watson has been besieged by requests from sponsors, tournaments, media and others since his dramatic win in April at Augusta National. He said hes just learning now what its like to be in such demand. "Ive got a lot more friends than I used to have," he said with a wide grin. "I wasnt very popular before, but now Ive gotten a lot more popular." Questions on Woods website ranged from who he looked up to the most as a kid to why he didnt recapture some of his old championship magic by switching from Foley back to former swing coach Butch Harmon. Mixed in were some responses from awed fans. "No questions," wrote NateDogg8896. "Just wanted to say youre the most amazing person on the planet." Another poster wondered why Woods is now wearing white golf shoes so often. After winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational in late March, Woods came into the Masters as a favourite. He finished tied for 40th there, missed the cut at the Wells Fargo and then tied for 40th again at The Players two weeks ago. Woods said he still has fun playing golf, despite the meltdown he had during the Masters that included kicking a club and swearing. "I love competing, mixing it up with the guys, trying to beat all of them," Woods said. "Thats the rush, thats the fun. Obviously its a lot more fun when youre winning than when youre 40th. Thats something Im still working on." cheap jerseys china . According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun the deal is worth $2.3 million per season. The fourth-seeded Chinese star beat Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at Rod Laver Arena to capture her first Australian Open title on Saturday. Li played in her third final in four years at Melbourne Park. She lost to Kim Clijsters in 2011 and Victoria Azarenka last year before finally breaking through at the seasons first Grand Slam event against the 20th-seeded Cibulkova. "After I win the match, I really, really exciting," Li said. "I think I have drops still coming down, you know. I try to have hug with the team, but is too high. I cannot catch it (laughter)." Her win came at the end of a fortnight featuring an array of surprising results on the womens side. It was the first time since 1997 that none of the top three seeds made the semifinals. Li committed 25 of her 30 unforced errors in a competitive opening set before she unexpectedly breezed through the second. She had a 34-11 advantage in winners, many coming on her lethal backhand, and converted half of her 10 break-point chances. The second double fault by Cibulkova in the matchs opening game gave Li an early break. A double fault then hurt Li as Cibulkova gained a break to level the first set at 3-all. Li earned a break point with a strong backhand winner in the ninth game, but two of her forehands flew long and Cibulkova was able to hold for a 5-4 lead. After closing out a relative easy service game with an ace to extend the set, Li earned two break points when she followed up Cibulkovas sixth double fault with a blistering ccrosscourt backhand.dddddddddddd Cibulkova then netted a backhand to give Li a 6-5 lead before she broke back to force a tiebreak. Li raced out to a commanding 5-1 lead in the tiebreak and she later claimed the 70-minute first set when Cibulkova dumped a backhand into the net. The second set lasted only 27 minutes and ended with Cibulkova sending a ground stroke long. "You know, it was my first Grand Slam finals and Im just proud with the way I handle it," Cibulkova said. "You know, I just went on the court. I wanted to play my best tennis. It wasnt easy against her because she was playing extremely well. So Im quite happy." Li, who turns 32 next month, captured her second Grand Slam title, adding to her victory at the 2011 French Open, and improved to 9-11 in career finals. She also is just the fourth woman to win the Aussie Open crown after saving a match point. She fought off the match point in the third round against Lucie Safarova and joined Monica Seles (1991), Jennifer Capriati (2002) and Serena Williams (2003 and 2005) to accomplish the feat. "Yeah, start of tournament everybody talking about the age," Li said. "I would like to say age is nothing. Still can win the Grand Slam. So pretty happy about my age. I got more experience on the court." Cibulkova, who stands just 5-foot-3, knocked off No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals to become Slovakias first Grand Slam finalist. The 24-year-old fell to 3-6 in her career title tilts and 0-5 against Li. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Joe Torres group has dropped out of bidding for the bankrupt Los Angeles Dodgers because current owner Frank McCourt wont include the parking lots outside the stadium. Whether the lots are included in the sale has been an issue that always has had the potential to become contentious as the sale process moves toward a conclusion in April. Some if not most bidders are opposed to the prospect of buying the team and then having to deal with McCourt as their next-door-neighbour, in control of land needed for the vehicles of fans attending games. The decision, first reported by The Los Angeles Times, was conveyed to Major League Baseball executive vice-president Rob Manfred in a letter from group head Rick Caruso and Torre. The letter was obtained by the Times and The Associated Press. "Since the outset, we felt that operationally it would be impossible to effectively manage baseball operations having the parking lots that surround the stadium under separate ownership," said the letter, which was dated Feb. 17. "We believed that during the bid process that we would have the opportunity to buy the lots. It has not been made clear to us by Mr. McCourt that the lots are not and will not be for sale." The Caruso-Torre bid has been considered one of the favourites, pairing a real estate developer with a former Dodgers manager who quit his job with MLB to join the chase for the team.dddddddddddd They left open the possibility of getting back in. "If the circumstances of the sale change, we are prepared to re-engage in the process immediately," the letter said. The Dodgers declined comment, spokeswoman Lyndsey Estin said. Second, more refined bids were due Thursday, after the groups had submitted documentation to Major League Baseball. McCourts financial adviser, Blackstone Group, must decide whether to drop any additional bidders before interviews are scheduled with baseballs ownership committee. Under McCourts agreement with MLB, filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, he is to select a winning bid by April and close a sale by April 30 -- the day he is to make a US$131 million divorce payment to former wife Jamie. Also considered among the favourites are bids by Steve Cohen of the hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors and by a group that includes Mark Walter, chief executive officer of the Guggenheim Partners financial services firm. Cohen is represented by Steve Greenberg, the son of Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg, a former agent and deputy commissioner and frequent banker for baseball team sales. Walters group includes former Lakers star Magic Johnson and former Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals president Stan Kasten. ' ' '

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- The Abbotsford Heat have finally made their rink a difficult place to play -- and just in time for the playoffs. The Heat won their third-straight home game on Wednesday night, defeating the Rochester Americans 4-3 in overtime in American Hockey League action. Abbotsford has struggled much of the season in their own barn but are now over .500 at home after the win, concluding a homestand on which they went 4-1-1. "This needs to be a tough place for teams to play," said Heat forward Carter Bancks. "Were battling for home ice right now and its not going to be much help if this is an easy place for other teams to play. This is a place we want teams to be nervous coming into and I thought weve done a better job in the last four games." The geography of the Calgary Flames affiliate may have some relevance as to why it can be difficult for visiting teams to play in Abbotsford, B.C. "From my time here, (I noticed) that teams have to come here from a long ways and travel," said Rochester captain, and former Abbotsford forward Colin Stuart. "Theres no excuses for the visiting team but its definitely a hard rink to play. They seem to play a hard simple game, clog up the neutral zone and theyve got some guys that can move the puck." Ben Walter converted a pass from Krys Kolanos off the rush at 2:19 in overtime to clinch the victory. "It was a nice play by Kolanos to get it to Walter and put it in," said Kolanos regular linemate Dustin Sylvester. The goal gives Walter points in his last seven games (five goals and seven assists). That assist gave Kolanos three points on the evening. His second-period score gave him goals in five-straight games, to go with four assists in that stretch. "We got great leadership out of those guys at critical moments," said head coach Troy Ward. Also, with that goal Kolanos set a new single-season franchise record with 26 on the year, surpassing Jason Jaffrays mark from 2009-10. "To set a franchise record for goals in a year and...he hasnt played a full year with us, I think its an outstanding accomplishment," said Ward. "Im real happy for Krys and the franchise." Sylvester and Roman Horak also scored for home team. With the win Abbotsford (38-26- maintained a three-point lead for fourth in the Western Conference and has gone 4-0-1 in its past five games. "These are huge points for us in the standings," said Bancks. Rochester (32-26-13) moved up to one point out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference but remained winless in the past five games. "Every points important," said Stuart. "Were on a stretch now where we need two-point games. Obviously anything less than that is a disappointment. But well take the one point and focus on getting two in Hamilton." Danny Taylor got his second straight start, recording 29 saves in the win. Evan Rankin had a goal and an assist for Rochester, while Derek Whitmore and Stuart also scored. David Leggio stopped 31 shots in his 17th consecutive start. "(Leggio) was on his game tonight," said Stuart. "Obviously the shots we did give up were quality. He kept us in the game." After a scoreless first period, Kolanos was sent in on a breakaway by a Brian Connelly pass and wired a shot glove side on Leggio at 4:13 for his record-setting goal. The Americans tied the game at 7:58 of the second while killing a penalty on a two-on-two rush. Rankin redirected Phil Varones pass over the glove of Taylor for his 12th of the season. Rankin now has nine points in his past six games. Abbotsford has given up 12 short-handed goals this season, the fourth most in the AHL. "Weve been giving up short-handed goals lately, which we dont want to do," said Sylvester. "We changed it in the third, I dont know if well stick with that, but weve got to try and stop giving up short-handed goals." The Americans took their first lead of the game at 11:30 with Whitmores team-leading 27th of the year. Paul Szczechura beat Connelly to the puck behind the Heat goal and fed it to Rankin in the corner. He quickly set up Whitmore in the low slot for a one-timer. The Heat tied the game just 34 seconds into the third period. Kolanos point shot was stopped, but Paul Byron collected the rebound and fed it to Sylvester for a tap in. Abbotsford regained the lead at 9:46. Bancks blew by a defender and centred for Horak in the low slot before Horak fought off a check to convert the pass. However, the Americans tied the game at three with 5:39 remaining in regulation. Stuart one-timed a cross-ice feed from Varone to send the game to overtime. "Our effort was...night and day compared to last night," said Stuart, whose team lost 4-0 to the Heat on Tuesday. "There was some ebbs and flow in that game where it was in anybodys hands but down the stretch we just didnt take care of the puck enough." Wholesale NFL Jerseys . Sinisa Ubiparipovic and Andrew Wenger each scored as the expansion Impact registered their first MLS victory with a 2-1 win against Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon at Olympic Stadium. "Its always nice to get the monkey off your back and move forward, but more importantly it just feels good to win," said Wenger. Ubiparipovic, making his first appearance of the season for Montreal, scored in the 17th minute in front of 23,120 spectators at Olympic Stadium. Wenger, the Impacts first overall draft pick, doubled the Impacts lead with nine minutes remaining as Montreal (1-4-1) held off a late rally by 10-man TFC. It was the first ever MLS goal for Wenger, who has been splitting time between the team and Duke University in North Carolina, where he is finishing up a history degree. "Its good to break that losing streak, and now we just have to string some wins together," Wenger said. Danny Koevermans scored for winless Toronto (0-4-0), which was reduced to 10 men after defender Logan Emory was sent off in the 65th minute. Koevermans scored on a header in the 88th to cut Montreals lead to one. It was Torontos fifth game in 14 days, including CONCACAF Champions League matches. The crowd was less than half the 58,912 fans who attended Montreals home opener on March 17. But the home fans were loud and enthusiastic as their team got off to a strong start, dominating ball possession early on and coming close on several rushes by Sanna Nyassi. The two clubs showed a feistiness in their first ever MLS matchup in what promises to become a strong rivalry.dddddddddddd Montreal and Toronto have met six times before in Amway (formerly Nutrilite) Canadian Championship play. TFC won five of those matches. Emory, who was sent off for tripping Nyassi, was visibly disappointed after the game and said the team needs to start executing better if they hope to find their first win on the season. "Its definitely frustrating," he said. "Nobodys really breaking us down, its all mistakes were making." "Everybody has to look at the game tapes and see how to improve," added TFC keeper Milos Kocic. "If you want to earn your respect from the fans and the other players and your teammates, you need to perform." Impact head coach Jesse Marsch said his teams hard work finally paid off after a string of disappointing results. "I know that theyre all buying in to what were about," said Marsch. "More than anything I wanted them to feel validation for all the positive energy that theyve given to the club." Impact midfielder and hometown favourite Patrice Bernier didnt play for the second straight game, although Marsch said Bernier will be back in the lineup soon. "We know that hes a very good player, its going to be a long year," he said. The Impact now return to the road for games at Dallas and D.C. United before returning home for a game against Portland on April 28. Only three of their first 10 games are at home as they await completion of the expansion of their outdoor home, Saputo Stadium. TFC returns home to Toronto for a game against Chivas USA next Saturday. ' ' '

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jaguars have been awarded third-year fullback Bradie Ewing off waivers from Atlanta. A fifth-round draft pick in 2012, Ewing started two games in two years with the Falcons. He spent the entire 2012 season on injured reserve with a knee injury. He started the first two games last year before ending up on IR with a shoulder injury. He had two catches for 29 yards. The 5-foot-11, 243-pound fullback will compete for a roster spot with Will Taufoou, a third-year pro who beat out veteran Montell Owens last season. Ewing was a four-year letterman at Wisconsin. He started 11 games with the Badgers, carrying the ball seven times for 33 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 28 passes for 328 yards and two scores, and played on special teams. SEATTLE -- With Seattles veterans doing very little over the last three weeks, the rookies ended up carrying Mariners to their second win in the last 20 games. Three rookies to be exact. Michael Pineda gave up just one hit and struck out a career-high 10, Dustin Ackley homered, doubled and scored twice, and Mike Carp provided the go-ahead RBI single in the Mariners 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Pineda didnt allow a hit until the sixth inning when Ben Zobrists RBI single brought the Rays even at two-all. Ackley and Carp then answered in the bottom of the inning to give Pineda just his second win in his last seven starts. "With the young kids youre trying to build with, youre trying to answer questions about, they are the key as you move forward," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "Weve got quite a few up here and weve got more coming." A couple more will arrive on Sunday when newly acquired outfielder Casper Wells and left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush join the Mariners. The pair, along with third-base prospect Francisco Rodriguez and a player to be named, were traded from Detroit to Seattle in exchange for right-handed starter Doug Fister and right-handed reliever David Pauley on Saturday morning. Pineda carried most of the load, throwing 6 1-3 inning, before turning it over to reliever Jeff Gray. Rarely used earlier in the season, Gray continued a strong second half by pitching 1 2-3 scoreless innings. He escaped a jam in the seventh after Pineda walked a pair of batters and was pulled following his 110th pitch. Gray then worked a perfect eight before Brandon League pitched the ninth for his 24th save in 28 chances. It was Seattles first home win since July 3, although the Mariners have spent most of the month on the road. Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb (3-1) also struck out a career-high nine, but suffered his first major league loss. Cobb had most of Seattles lineup guessing with the lone exception being Ackley, currently the only batter in Seattles lineup hitting over .300. Following Ichiro Suzukis infield single to start the game, Ackley laced his fifth homer of the season on a line into the seats in right-centre field. "I worked myself every at-bat today into a 3-2 count. You know the guy is going to throw something over the plate and not walk you," Ackley said. "He gave me a couple of pitches to hit and found some holes." Then Ackley helped give Seattle the lead for good in the sixth and make sure Pineda came away with the victory. On the 10th pitch of his at-bat against Cobb, Ackley lined a one-hop double off the wall in right-centre, near where he homered earlier in the game. Before Ackley could even get comfortable at second, he was headed home after Carps go-ahead single into the right field corner. While the rest of the Mariners have struggled, Carp is hitting .359 since being recalled from triple-A Tacoma on July 18. "Ackley has battled me well for two years now, going back to double-A and in the fall league," Cobb said. "He must just see me well or something but Ive always had a little trouble with him." Pineda was dominant in the early innings, but his pitch count was at the point where he needed to be removed after giving up consecutive walks to Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce with one out in the seventh. Of the first nine outs recorded by Pineda, seven were by strikeout. He stunned Rays catcher Robinson Chirinos in the fifth by accidentally throwing an 0-2 pitch over his head and to the backstop, only to freeze Chirinos with a fastball down the middle on the next pitch for his ninth strikeout. Pineda saw his no-hit bid end in the sixth on Zobrists single just over the head of second baseman Jack Wilson that scored Sean Rodriguez. Pineda jumped in the air and slammed his hand into his glove as the ball sailed over Wilsons leaping attempt. "I think, he got it, he got it, he got it, oh!" Pineda said. "Its OK." Tampa Bay got its first run off Pineda -- unearned -- in the fourth inning after Johnny Damon stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Josh Bard. He scored on Zobrists groundout. Still, it was the second-time this season the Rays have been held to one hit. "He is the kind of guy that on any given night you could say he has no-hit stuff," Rays manager Joe Maddon said of Pineda. Notes: It was the 12th one-hitter in Mariners history. ... Zobrist extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his line drive single in the sixth. ... Seattle expects Wells and Furbush to be in uniform in time for Sundays series finale. ... We are told the table never lies. It is a cliché dragged out by fans and pundits regularly when discussions take place around which teams are better than others. However, the only lies being told are coming from the ones who deliver the cliché. We have have been told Manchester City are a poor away side. A quick glance of their record heading into Wednesdays match at West Brom (1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses) would suggest this but once again the league table was lying. To judge teams, at this stage of the season, solely on their results misses so many factors that go into ensuring teams sustain success in the long-term. During 90 minutes of football things happen that can have a direct effect on the result at the end of the game. It is too simplistic to say the team that won played well and the team that lost didnt and there is no better example of that this season than with Manchester City away from home. Before Wednesday at West Brom headlines, splashed across England previewing the match, called City away from home everything from rubbish to poor. It is, of course, not ideal to lose four games this season early in the season. In fact, the last team to lose four of their first eleven games (which City did) and win the title in the top flight of England was City themselves back in 1968. However, for the majority of their away matches this season City have been far from poor. On the contrary, City, in large parts of away matches, have looked like the attacking, entertaining team many dreamed they could sustain under Roberto Mancini. Two years ago under the Italian, City sprinted out of the blocks, scoring an incredible 23 goals in their first six away matches in the Premier League. Six goals at Manchester United and five at Tottenham sent messages that this team was the clear favourite to win the Premier League. Then the league started to work them out. Teams sat deeper and City couldnt adjust. They went on to win the league title, in the most dramatic ways through a late Sergio Aguero goal on the final day, but it was their atrocious away form that almost cost them. A look at their championship winning final league table shows City scored 38 goals and won 10 games away from home that season. What it fails to tell you is that half of their wins, and 23 of their 38 goals, came in those first six away matches. Ten goals, including 8 against Norwich and Wolves, and three wins also came in their last three matches, in late April and May. In the 10 away games in between, from the end of November to the middle of April, City scored just five goals (2 from open play), won 2, drew 3 and lost 5. It was a run that was far worse than the way they started this season but it didnt get the attention it deserved because the league table told a story that included Citys breathtaking start. When rivals United collapsed and handed City the title, Mancinis constant tactical changes, and failures to get his team to create as a unit away from home, was forgotten. It would play a massive part in their failure the following season, however. When City failed to win for the 7th time in their first 10 away games last season last year, on Boxing Day at Sunderland, their attempts at regaining the championship were already over. Wins later in 2013, at Arsenal and Manchester United, teams who didnt sit deep and took the game to City, werent surprising, but neither were there abysmal performances in losses at Southampton and Everton. When Mancini was replaced by Manuel Pellegrini many felt the Chilean had been hired to help turn around Citys woeful Champions League efforts under Mancini. That is certainly true, but also Pellegrini is expected to get more out of his team as an attacking unit, particularly away from home. There is no denying Citys brilliance at home and many teams will be on the wrong end of some serious hammerings this season, just as Norwich and Tottenham already have encountered. In those victories, City have shown they can score goals from quick transitions and counter-attacks, something that is sure to translate to successful away performances also. In fact, for large parts of their four away losses, City have been very impressive in attack, getting their full-backs forward and showing some useful combination play between their forwards. Their loss at Cardiff came from poor defending and goalkeeping on two corners. City were not at their best that day but did enough to win the match. Their loss at Aston Villa came from a fantastic individual free kick by Leandro Bacuna and some terrible defending and goalkeeping on a long clearance by Brad Guzan. City were absolutely magnificent that day and played far better than their past two visits to Villa Park, under Mancini, when they won 1-0 each time thanks to a goal from a set-piece (header by Joleon Lescott) and a mistimed poor back pass by Ciaran Clark (finished off by Carlos Tevez). Their loss at Chelsea came from poor defending, and, in particular, goalkeeping (there is a theme here) when Joe Hart rushed out and allowed Fernando Torres to put the ball in the back of the net in the final minute. Having gone a goal down, City were the best side in the second half, after Sergio Agueros equalizer, showing they can be equally dangerous when the Argentine plays as a lone striker with a strong midfield 3 behind him. City caused Chelsea much more of a threat than they did in their past two visits to Stamford Bridge when they were lifeless in each of those second halves. Like at Villa, it was yet more evidence, that City had improved away from home, blinded by the games result. Their loss at Sunderland was their worst of the season, highlighting the key area Pellegrini has to get right. Once again they were a real threat going forward but a second-string back four featuring Micah Richards, Martin Demichilis, Joleon Lescott, Aleksandar Kolarov let themselves down on the Phil Bardsley goal and this time their attackers could not bail them out. Citys defending, at times, away from home has clearly not been good enough but Pellegrini will know this is much less of a concern than if his attacking unit was not playing well. Scoring goals is the hardest thing to do in the game and if that is not working (as we saw under Mancini) it can lead to much bigger problems. Making a team organized and better defensively, particularly with the players at his disposal (this is no Newcastle of the mid 90s), is a much less difficult job for the Chilean. "I worry about the away form," Pellegrini conceded after the Sunderland loss, but he knew the way the team is playing in an open 4-4-2 style has to stay despite the results, saying: "Weve had a lot of chances and played really well in (away) matches, I am absolutely sure we are playing the right way and know the wins will come." That attitude took the manager and his City side to the Hawthorns for a date with West Brom on Wednesday evening. City welcomed back captain Vincent Kompany at the heart of their defence and kept their 4-4-2 shape with Edin Dzeko replacing Alvaro Negredo alongside Aguero. Pellegrini had predicted the wins and performance would come and his players didnt let him down, Citys first half display will rank as one of the finest halves a team will play all season. After 24 minutes, they led 2-0 and were so dominant it should have been up by more. The first involved 14 passes, over 46 seconds, that saw the ball move to the right and to the overlapping right back Pablo Zabaleta whose cross was smashed home by Aguero. It was a sensational team goal but fifteen minutes their second one was even better, coming from 15 passes, in which the home side didnt touch the ball for 53 seconds, finishing with the left back, Kolarov, this time getting forward to cross for Yaya Toure to power home. It was a dream half of football for Pellegrini. Jesus Navas and Samir Nasri were outstanding in their movement and combination play while Aguero was just as lethal with Dzeko as it has been with Negredo this season. At the back, Kompany was a rock with key blocks denying West Brom of any real scoring threats. City were that dominant they made more successful passes in the first half than they attempted in the recent win over Swansea at home. This, as regular viewers to their away games would attest to, this was not a team who have played poorly away from home. In the second half City stepped down a few gears but still sent West Brom fans home early when they converted a third, from the spot, again created by a run by full back Kolarov down the left. "You should have gone Christmas shopping," chanted City fans to the home supporters as they dragged themselves out of their seats. Not only had they watched a superb away performance, they had also failed to see their team put a shot on goal or attempt a shot inside the penalty box for the first 81 mins. It was the perfect all-around performance for City until West Brom scored two late goals with Toure, Nasri and Aguero all resting on the bench. In many ways it was fitting that those who will judge the game solely on the scoreline will once again miss the point. City look very much like the formidable away team they need to be to contend for the title. Just dont let the scoreline or the league table tell you otherwise. cheap jerseys free shipping .J. - The weather forecast for the first Super Bowl in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather city is nothing out of the ordinary. cheap jerseys . 5 Trade Deadline isnt that far away and teams will be making decisions on whether to buy, sell and decide which players can make the biggest difference and hold the greatest value. http://www.forsalecheapjerseys.com/. "Thank you for the warm welcome," Beckham said on an 80-degree February morning. In this case, it was soccer weather. The sport moved a step closer to returning to South Florida on Wednesday, when Beckham confirmed he has exercised his option to purchase a Major League Soccer expansion franchise in Miami. The deal will be finalized when the former English national team captain can secure a financing plan and location for a new stadium. Beckham attended a news conference with MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez to discuss their progress. "This is an exciting time, and something were really looking forward to bringing to Miami," Beckham told a crowd of more than 300 people on a downtown museum plaza. The event was frequently interrupted by cheers for Beckham, whos popular around the world and especially in celebrity-smitten Miami. The retired soccer icon has scouted possible stadium sites and is seeking investors to assist with startup costs such as construction and player acquisitions. Among those who might become involved is Miami Heat star LeBron James, who has had recent conversations with Beckham about bringing a team to Miami. "LeBron has become a friend over the last few years," Beckham said. "We spoke about this on the business side and also as friends. Hes very interested in this." Beckham, looking the part of a businessman in a suit and tie, said city officials have promised the teams stadium will be downtown, which is his preference. "We dont want public funding," Beckham said to applause. "We will fund the stadium ourselves. We have worked very hard to get to this stage where we can fund the stadium ourselves. We want to create a football club that is the peoples football club." Gimenez -- who at one point referred to Beckham as "Beckman" -- said theres political support for a plan. "We started our negotiations last week," Gimenez said. "We have to get rolling. Theres a time crunch. We are willing partners. We are very grateful that Mr. Beckham and MLS have chosen Miami as the site for their next franchise. Were going to do all in our power to make sure we get the stadium built in the right place as quickly as possible." New teams have been announced for 2015 iin New York City and Orlando, Fla.dddddddddddd, increasing the leagues total to 21. Beckham declined to offer a timetable regarding when Miami might play its first game, but a likely target is 2017. The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain star has the right to an expansion team at a discount fee of $25 million. MLSs Miami Fusion played in Fort Lauderdale from 1998-01 before folding because of poor attendance, but this time, Beckhams star power could make a difference. "Miami is a vibrant city with a lot of passion," he said. "I know this city is ready for football -- soccer -- this time around. I know this is going to be successful." The crowd at the news conference included a throng of chanting, singing fans. "People here love this sport," Garber said. "We together have no doubt it will be a very successful MLS team." Beckham said he also wants to start a childrens soccer academy in Miami. Shareholders in the team will include Beckhams business partner Simon Fuller, the "American Idol" creator who is the driving force in franchise negotiations, and Marcelo Claure, president and CEO of Brightstar Corp. Beckham said hell finalize his group of investors over the next couple of months. He declined to say what players he would like to bring to the team. "We have a list," he said. "We want to bring some of the best players in football to Miami to play on this team. Ive seen what happens to teams when you bring great players in. Im talking about the Heat." That brought cheers from the crowd. James and the Heat have won the past two NBA titles. Beckham laughingly ruled out hiring his former manager, Alex Ferguson, to coach the team, but said he has ideas regarding that search, as well. "I kind of know what makes a great coach and what doesnt," he said. "Well have a good coach here." Beckham praised the growth in recent of years of MLS and said hes optimistic about the leagues direction. Regular-season attendance increased from an average of 15,504 in 2006 to a record 18,807 in 2012 before dropping slightly this season to 18,594. "Ive seen the change in this league," Beckham said. "Ive seen the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona come over to America. They want to play against the MLS teams. Theyre interested in this league, and thats whats changing." ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry Fraser wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! The New York Rangers find themselves in a do or die situation tonight in Game 6 back in "The Rock." Some of us cant help but throw around comparisons to 1994, 18 years ago to the day to be exact, when the Rangers found themselves in the identical situation. That Ranger team had played to taunting chants of 1940 (the length of the Rangers Cup drought) throughout that series. The taunting would continue until it the naysayers were hushed forever when the Stanley Cup was paraded around Madison Square Garden ice by Captain Mark Messier and his teammates following a 3-2 Game 7 win over the Vancouver Canucks. It was a thrilling Cup Final to say the least, but the NY Rangers encountered a huge mountain to climb in the form of Martin Brodeur and the NJ Devils before they could hope to compete for Lord Stanleys hardware. With their backs against the wall, the Rangers travelled through the Lincoln Tunnel to the Swamp of the Meadowlands where the New Jersey Devils flourished. Captain Mark Messier called his shot by guaranteeing a victory that would send the series back to Madison Square Garden for Game 7. It was a bold move by the man that became known as Captain Courageous and arguably the greatest leader in the history of the game. While the situation that the Rangers (and Devils) find themselves in tonight is exactly the same as it was 18 years ago to the day, almost everything else is different. I say "almost" because Martin Brodeur has been down this road before. He was terrific in the 1994 series but beaten by a superior Ranger team at the time. His level of play has been equally outstanding throughout this series and is just one win away from returning to the Stanley Cup Final for the fifth time. While Mark Messier is sure to be in the Prudential Center tonight, it will not be the Moose that Martin Brodeur and the Devils will have to contend with but a much different NY Ranger team. There will be no guarantees tonight from anyone even though those are the things that folklore is made of. I remember it well because I was the referee assigned to Game 6 in the Meadowlands this day in 1994 when Messier took the game on his back and made good on his guarantee. This is my account from on the ice and in the officials dressing room of Game 6 in 94 as I wrote it in The Final Call. "To their credit the Ranger fans suffered from the same frustration as the players and deserved full marks for loyalty. The Islander dynasty years added salt to the wounds caused by the Ranger Cup drought since 1940. The Rangers dust bowl draught finally ended in the form of a rainmaker by the name of Mark Messier, one the greatest leaders the game has ever known. On the verge of elimination at the hands of the NJ Devils on the day of Game 6 of the 94 Eastern Conference Finals the Ranger captain boldly promised a victory. The headline, "Well Win Tonight" in the New York papers that day documented Messiers claim. At the end of the second period I also made a bold prediction, not issued to the world through the media but to my linesmen, Pat Dapuzzo and Gerard Gauthier in the privacy of the officials dressing room. I said stick a fork in them - this Ranger team is done. The first and second periods were all New Jersey. Martin Brodeur looked unbeatable until Alex Kovalev found a minor chink in the Devils goalie armor with just 1:41 left in the second period. I didnt think the Rangers would solve him beyond that nor did I believe they had enough gas left in the tank to pull this one out on the road. They would start the third period on the penalty kill with Esa Tikkanen in the box for kneeing Stephane Richer with 1:09 remaining in the second period. It would be the last time I would ever doubt the words of Mark Messier. Mark Messier took the game on his back and tied it up as he slid a backhander past Brodeur just 2:48 into the third. Just five minutes into the period the Rangers had outshot the Devils 6-2. We had a new game going! Mess scored the go ahead goal by pouncing on a rebound at 12:12 and the Rangers wouldnt look back from that point. With 2:49 left in the third, Glenn Anderson of the Rangers two handed Bernie Nichols and took a slashing penalty. With 1:53 left in the period and 1:04 remaining on the power play, Jacques Lemaire called a timeout with a faceoff in the Ranger zone to the right of Mike Richter. Messier drew the puck back to his defenseman at the bottom of the faceoff circle who moved the puck behind the goal to the other corner. John McLean of the Devils got to the puck first and tried to center a pass to the front of the net but it went through the intended target and right onto Messiers stick in the slot. Mess turned with the puck and fired a shot right into the heart of the Devils unguarded cage. Mark Messier made good on his "called shot" by scoring his first hat trick as a NY Ranger (a natural one at that) to force game seven two nights later back in Madison Square Garden. Mark Messiers feat in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final has been described as one of the greatest individual efforts in the history of the game. Witnessing the herculean effort put forth by Captain Courageous that night certainly made a believer out of me when only 20 minutes before I had all but written them off. Back in Madison Square Garden two nights later, the NY Rangers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final on the strength of Stephane Matteaus goal scored in double overtime. The Ranger would have an opportunity to silence the chants of "1940" once and for all." There will be no guarantees coming from Mark Messier or any of the current Ranger players tonight in the Prudential Center. The Rock that the NY Rangers have to climb will be in the form of 40 year old future Hockey Hall of Fame goalkeeper Martin Brodeur and a very committed team of Devils in front of him. I will be watching with interest to see if one of the Ranger players provides the leadership or takes the game on his back the way the Captain did in 94. Tonight, the outcome is too unpredictable for anyone to guarantee. Davis is hitting .302 with seven home runs and a team-leading 25 RBIs.ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Minnesota Twins had their the best game of the season from a power standpoint, and it wasnt easy against a pitching staff that had given up fewer home runs than any team in the American League going in. Delmon Young drove in three runs with a pair of homers off sinkerballer Joel Pineiro, Michael Cuddyer hit a tiebreaking grand slam and a solo shot, and Jason Kubel also went deep to lead the Minnesota Twins to an 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. "You know hes a sinkerballer, and what sinkerballers do is try to throw the ball down in the zone and get you to roll over the ball," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "And if you chase and fall into the trap, thats his goal. But I thought we laid off some pitches early. He used his breaking ball, but we had some good at-bats overall and put the ball in play. And when he made some mistakes, we put them in the seats." Anthony Swarzak (3-3) was credited with the victory, allowing one hit in five scoreless innings after taking over for ineffective starter Scott Baker. The right-hander recorded his sixth career victory and first in relief. Peter Bourjos homered for the Angels, who squandered a chance to tie Texas for the AL West lead for the first time since July 5 after the Rangers lost at Detroit. Manager Mike Scioscia returned to the dugout after serving a one-game suspension. Baker threw 77 pitches through three innings in his shortest outing of the season, allowing four runs — three earned — and five hits. He left with the score tied four-all — as did Joel Pineiro, who was lifted with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. But Cuddyer drove Hisanori Takahashis first pitch to left-centre for his fifth grand slam and the first by the Twins. "He threw me a change-up and I was waiting for it," Cuddyer said. "It that situation, man on third and less than two outs, Im just basically trying to hit a sac fly. Fortunately, I was able to get a good part of the bat on it and was able to hit it out of the park. Delmon came up big with two homers and Kubel got one, so all around, it was a good night," Cuddyer said. "We had a good approach at the plate. We were able to see the ball up and hit it." Pineiro (5-6) was charged with seven runs and seven hits in 4-1 innings. He is 0-3 with a whopping 14.85 earned-run average over his last four starts, and has failed to make it through the fifth in three of them. "I wish I had an explanation for what is going on. I have no idea," Pineiro said. "I feel healthy and good. I have tried everything that I can. Honestly the next thing I could do is sacrifice a live chicken. I just dont know." Kubel hit his seventh homer in the seventh against Takahashi, and Cuddyer added his 18th in the ninth against Horacio Ramirez. The five home runs were season high for the Twins, as well as the Angels staff. "Those guys swung the bats well tonight," Scioscia said. "We just had too many hitting counts for our guys to really get past anything. I think that has really been haunting Joel in his last handful of starts and that is a rough combination. "It is easy to see that the ball isnt coming out of his hand the way that it needs to and his command isnt there. Joel is strong when he is commanding the count and getting contact on his teerms and making pitches.dddddddddddd He hasnt been doing that lately. It has been a rough go. We are going to keep searching and going." The Angels spotted Minnesota a 3-0 lead before pulling ahead with a four-run third. Bourjos led off with a drive into the lower seats in the left field corner, ending a streak of seven starts and 52 2-3 innings for Baker in which he did not allow a home run. Torii Hunter got the Halos even with a two-out, two-run single, and Alberto Callaspo capped the rally with an RBI single before he was erased in a rundown. "I knew what I needed to do to be successful tonight, but it just wasnt happening," said Baker, who threw 45 pitches in the third inning. "Theres very few times you have an inning with 40-something pitches, and thats kind of hard to recover from. I just felt like I was surviving tonight and not thriving. I was just getting by. I wasnt able to put guys away tonight, and they battled. There were a couple of occasions where I really could have used a good two-strike pitch." Young, who hadnt hit a home run since June 9, tied it in the fourth with his fourth of the season and second in as many at-bats. In the second inning, he followed a leadoff single by Danny Valencia with a drive over the fence in left-centre. It was Youngs third career two-homer game and first since Oct. 4, 2009 against Kansas City. "With a sinkerball pitcher, youve got to just stay with it," Young said. "You cant try to pull the ball because youre going to beat it right into the ground. I just happened to get a couple of balls up and put good swing on them." After going 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position in their 5-1 loss to Ervin Santana on Friday night, the Twins cashed in on their first attempt against Pineiro. Joe Mauer, who came in 14 for 20 against the right-hander with no strikeouts, singled home a run in the first after Ben Revere singled and stole second. Including his no-decision, Baker is 1 for 5 lifetime against the Angels with a 4.77 ERA in 11 career starts, and 0-5 with a 6.53 ERA at Anaheim. In his other start against them this season on May 27 in Minnesota, he scattered six hits over seven innings and left with a 5-0 lead before the Halos rallied with five in the eighth and one in the ninth for a 6-5 victory. Notes: Cuddyer is the only player still with the Twins from their 2002 AL Championship Series loss to the Angels. ... Young started as the designated hitter in place of Jim Thome, who didnt play because of stiffness in his neck. ... When Young homered, he became the 60th consecutive batter Piniero had faced without a strikeout. That drought ended when the next hitter, Tsuyoshi Nishioka, looked at a called third strike. ... Bourjos homer was the first allowed by Baker since June 6 at Cleveland, when Michael Brantley hit a solo shot against him. ... Baker came in with a .568 winning percentage (64-4 is the fourth-best in Twins history behind Johan Santana (.679), Camilo Pascual (.607) and Mudcat Grant (.58. ... After Thursday nights series finale, the Twins return to Target Field on Friday night to begin a series against the White Sox — which will begin a three-day celebration of the 20th anniversary of Minnesotas 1991 World Series title. More than 15 players from that team are scheduled to take part, along with former manager Tom Kelly. ' ' '

LONDON -- Gareth Barry was ruled out of the European Championship on Monday because of a stomach injury, robbing England of one of its two holding midfielders less than two weeks before the start of the tournament. Barry underwent a scan on the problem he picked up in the 1-0 friendly win over Norway on Saturday and results showed he has torn a muscle in his lower abdomen, the Football Association said. The Manchester City player was replaced in the 23-man squad by Everton centre back Phil Jagielka, meaning versatile defender Phil Jones is likely to act as cover for England in central midfield. England manager Roy Hodgson also had Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson on the standby list but preferred Jagielka, who started the Norway match alongside Joleon Lescott at centre back. "Im very disappointed to lose Gareth ... he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years," Hodgson said. "I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but Im sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros." Barry was one of Citys best players at the end of the Premier League season as the club clinched its first title in 44 years. Without him, Hodgson is likely to start Scott Parker alongside captain Steven Gerrard in central midfield. Frank Lampard and James Milner are the other players in the squad who can play central midfield, while Jones has played there on a number of occasions for Manchester United and also for England against Sweden in a friendly this year. Englands first match at the Euros is against France on June 11. "Yeah, [I heard them]," he said. "They made me miss the free throw." A year ago, Lowrys post-game antics may not have been so well received but what was snide and snarky is now endearing quick wit. The sound he heard as he missed that free throw was less about his candidacy for an award nobody actually expects him to win - though he has been the Raptors MVP - than it was a sentiment of appreciation. Often misunderstood, Lowry has finally found something in Toronto that had eluded him for seven seasons prior. Lowry has found a team that fits him like a glove, a locker room filled with players who hang on his every word and a city that is ready to embrace him as their own. Lowry has found a home. "Im just playing," said the Raptors point guard, after eclipsing 30 points for the second straight game - the first time hes accomplished that feat as a pro - carrying his team to 98-83 wire-to-wire win over the Magic on Wednesday. "My team, they expect me to do a certain thing every night and when you go out there and play for these guys that give you everything they got in this locker room, you dont want to disappoint them." Lowry had scored 31 in Mondays thrilling victory over the Nets. Two days later, it was a near triple-double, a season-best 33 points to go along with 11 assists and seven rebounds. All of this without Torontos leading scorer. DeMar DeRozan continues to sit out, nursing a sprained left ankle that is steadily improving, according to the Raptors guard. On Wednesday, he watched from the locker room because, as he insisted, he couldnt bare to be a well-dressed spectator on the Raptors bench. What he saw was a team that has come together in his absence and a player, in Lowry, who has taken his game to a whole new level. By the end of the first quarter, Lowry had 17 points, perfect on all five of his three-point attempts. The Raptors, as a team, connected on their first nine treys, making 11 of 14 in the opening half. When his team made their way to the locker room at intermission, Lowry had scored or assisted on 12 of the Raptors 17 field goals in his 18 first-half minutes. The lead was 15. "Hes stepped it up," coach Dwane Casey said of his point guard. "He set the tone in the first half with his threes, just his aggressive play means a lot." He seemed to brring out the best in everybody.dddddddddddd. Amir Johnson had his best game in well over a month, scoring 22 points and adding 11 boards. Jonas Valanciunas, who was named to the Rising Stars game at All-Star Weekend earlier in the evening, recorded his 16th double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Lowrys fingerprints were all over the teams effort. "You cant say enough," Casey continued. "I just hope, I keep my fingers crossed that the coaches voted him in [to the All-Star game] because he deserves it. Hes one of the best point guards in the league right now." Lowry has made his case loud and clear - though both 30-point performances have come after the coaches ballots for All-Star reserves were collected on Sunday - and his fate will be revealed on Thursday. The 27-year-old leads the East in assists in January, averaging 8.3, hitting more threes (49) than any player in the league, shooting them at a 46 per cent clip and leading his team to their second consecutive winning month. On Monday, he became the first player this season to record at least 30 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals in a game, a feat that was only accomplished by LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant last year. You have to go deep into the franchises not-so-rich history to find a point guard that even comes close to the level that Lowry is playing at right now. Damon Stoudamire, perhaps? Its been a while. Casey has been pumping Lowrys tires around the league and hopes that will tip the scale in his favour when the All-Star subs are revealed. As it turns out, maybe they should have sent his backup on the campaign trail. "Kyle is an unbelievable player," said Greivis Vasquez, who started Wednesday in place of the injured DeRozan on Wednesday. "Hes doing great things, not just for the team but for the city and thats huge." "Ill tell you this, he should make it," he continued. "Its not because Im his teammate, the numbers dont lie. I mean, Im seeing it, watching it and Im enjoying it." As it happens, Lowrys not holding his breath. Although he would welcome the honour with open arms, hes acknowledged that, of the two, DeRozan will likely be the one to get the call. One way or another, Lowry has 14 teammates, a coach, and the bulk of a city that believes hes an All-Star. Regardless of the result Thursday evening - as the Raptors land in Denver to begin a five-game road swing - that is not likely to change. ' ' '

The Toronto Raptors close out a four-game homestand Sunday afternoon as they welcome the recently streaking Denver Nuggets to the Air Canada Centre. Toronto is 1-2 on their current homestand following Fridays 90-83 loss to the two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat. You can listen to the game on TSN Radio 1050 at 1pm et. The Nuggets are on a five-game winning streak. LeBron James led the Heat with 27 points in the game against the Raptors on Friday. DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points to lead the hosts and Rudy Gay ended with 21 and 11 rebounds. Kyle Lowry posted 15 points for a squad that committed 21 turnovers, leading to 26 Miami points. Toronto shot 38.4 percent and made only eight of its 30 3-point attempts. The Raptors struggled at the foul line, too, making 19-of-32. "Free throws, that was the story," said Raptors forward Tyler Hansbrough. "We have to do a better job, myself included." After Toronto, which is 3-5 up north, hosts the Nuggets, it will head west for three games against Golden State, Phoenix and the Los Angeles Lakers. DeRozan leads the NBA in scoring with 28.0 points since November 15 and is averaging 23.4 ppg at home. Gay is posting an average of 19.0 ppg in his previous five and has at least one block in eight games in a row. Sundays game between Toronto and Denver is the first of two this season. The Nuggets will host the Raptors on Jan. 31 and both teams split two meetings in 2012-13. The Nuggets have won 10 of 12 and 15 of the past 18 matchups with Toronto. The Nuggets made it five wins in a row with Fridays 97-95 edging of the lowly New York Knicks, as Randy Foye finished with 17 points and defended Carmelo Anthonys 14-foot turnaround jumper with 2.1 seconds left. "Much respect to Carmelo, but at the end of the game, I realize were fighting for our lives," Foye told NBA.com. "Im just saying to myself, Im going to make him take a tough shot, no matter what. If he makes it over me with a hand up, I can live with it. But I cant live with giving him an easy shot, just because hes Carmelo." Ty Lawson led Denver with 22 points, Nate Robinson netted 16 off the bench and both Wilson Chandler and J.J. Hickson scored 13 points. Hickson also grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who shot 43.7 percent, but struggled from 3-point range (9-of-24). Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried left the game in the third quarter with a contusion of his quadriceps and had four points and six rebounds. The Nuggets hope Faried will be able to make the trip and he is questionable Sunday. Lawson has scored 10 or more points in all 15 of his games for the Nuggets, who are 9-3 since an 0-3 start. A six-game winning streak at home has helped. Denver has won back-to-back road games and will also visit Brooklyn, Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington on the trek. Denver is 3-4 outside the Rockies this season. nfl jerseys wholesale . Success is pretty much all Henry has known during an illustrious career. Neureuther beat Fritz Dopfer for a German 1-2 finish, and overtook Marcel Hirscher on top of the slalom standings by five points with one race remaining. On his way to Munich airport for his flight to Sochi on Feb. 14, Neureuther suffered whiplash as he lost control of his car on an icy road and hit the barrier. "I was in the best shape of my life when the car accident happened," Neureuther said. "The whole body was hurting. I couldnt ski at my top level at the Olympics. I was very disappointed. That was the most difficult time of my life." Starting as a medal contender, Neureuther came eighth in the GS and failed to finish his second run of the slalom at the Olympics. "The last couple of weeks have been brutal," the German said. "But I kept on fighting and today is the reward for that. I came back and I am very proud of that." Neureuther finished in a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 45.50 seconds to lead Dopfer by 0.59. Norwegian teenager Henrik Kristoffersen took third, 0.79 back. Olympic champion Mario Matt of Austria, who led after the first run, straddled a gate near the end of his final run and failed to finish. Hirscher came 0.95 behind Neureuther in fifth. The Austrian has 465 slalom points, just five behind Neureuther on 470. Kristoffersen is third on 430. "It looks pretty good," Neureuther said. "Henrik and Marcel are very close. Its going to be exciting. We will all ski absolutely to our limits." Neureuther said that winning the slalom globe would not make up for missing out on an Olympic medal. "Olympics are every four years," he said. "An Olympic medal is something different, winning a globe means youre the best skier during the whole year." It was Neureuthers seventh career slalom win and he now shares the German record for most World Cup wins in the discipline with Armin Bittneer.dddddddddddd Two-time defending champion Hirscher went top of the overall standings with 1,050 points, edging Norways Aksel Lund Svindal by just four points and setting up a tense conclusion to the season at next weeks World Cup finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. "Something has to change over the next few days," said Hirscher, who was hoping for a larger buffer. "I have to be able to compete at the same level as Aksel again, otherwise I am lost. (Fifth) is better than skiing out but this result is not satisfying." Hirscher admitted he was feeling the pressure. He can become only the fourth skier, and the first Austrian, to win the overall title three years in a row. "I am just not racing as easily as I usually do," Hirscher said. "This was all I could do, more was impossible. I have to admit that. What the other three showed on the hill was different class. How Felix took the steep part, that was the best slalom skiing weve seen all season." Dopfer reached his fourth career World Cup podium but was still waiting for his first win. Like teammate Neureuther, Dopfer bounced back from a disappointing Olympics, where he came fourth in the slalom. "This is my medal," said Dopfer. "My last few slaloms have been really good and this is my reward." Kristoffersen continued his great run that started in January and saw him win his first World Cup race, an Olympic bronze medal, and two junior world titles. And Saturday, he earned his first career podium in GS. "My main goal is for sure to get a better skier," said the 19-year-old Norwegian, who was giving himself an outside chance to grab the slalom title next week. "For sure, now its that close you want more." Ted Ligety, who won a record sixth giant slalom on the same course Saturday, was 2.04 back in 16th. Former overall champion Ivica Kostelic of Croatia, who won here last year, finished 2.98 off the lead in 27th. Sundays race was the last event before the World Cup finals start in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, on Wednesday. ' ' '

NEW YORK - Miguel Batista stood in front of his locker a couple of hours after he was done pitching, still wearing his game pants and in no hurry to let go of this moment. Batista pitched six serviceable innings to earn his 100th win, David Wright hit a two-run single in a four-run third against the bumbling Marlins and the New York Mets hung on to beat Florida 7-5 Thursday night. "Im very proud of my career," the 40-year-old Batista said. Making his first start since April 22 for St. Louis, Batista scattered six hits while becoming the third active pitcher to play for at least 10 teams. Filling in for injured Jonathon Niese, Batista induced two double-play grounders and helped New York take four of five in a series against its NL East rival. He got off to a shaky start, giving up a leadoff single and two walks and a run in the first. "I think I was a little too eager to get this game out of the way," he said. "Dont believe it was nervousness -- too old for that." Manager Terry Collins was impressed with his composure and pitches, but its probably not enough to earn Batista another start. "I dont know if hes going to go in five days," Collins said. With rosters expanding Sept. 1, Collins might have to find a start for a youngster. Emilio Bonifacio had three hits and three RBIs for Florida, including a two-run single during a three-run ninth. But the Marlins committed three errors and lost for the 20th time in 25 games. "It was sloppy tonight, no question," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. Lucas Duda drove in two runs and Ruben Tejada was hit twice by pitches and scored both times for New York, which was outhit 10-6. The Mets added what became three important runs in the eighth, helped in part by a throwing error. D.J. Carrasco gave up a two-out, two-run single to Bonifacio in the ninth and left with a runner on first. Bobby Parnell relieved and pinch-hitter John Buck hit an RBI double before Parnell got Greg Dobbs to pop out to second base for his fourth save. Batista (4-2) improved his career record to 100-112. In his 17th season, Batista did something the Mets have rarely been able to do this season: shut down Gaby Sanchez. The Marlins first baseman came in hitting .353 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 51 at-bats against New York, but he grounded out in each of his first three at-bats, leaving five runners on base. Batista and catcher Josh Thole got crossed up on a pitch in the second inning. Thole thought a slider was coming and Batista threw a fastball that hit Thole in the wrist. Thole left the game and was wearing a brace on his hand afterward. The Mets said he had a bruise and Thole said X-rays didnt show a break and that he will be examined Friday. The Mets took advantage of some poor play by the Marlins in the four-run fourth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Batista reached leading off when Bonifacio, playing shortstop for injured Hanley Ramirez, botched his grounder for an error. Tejada was hit by a pitch. Jose Reyes then hit a sharp grounder that Bonifacio knocked down while sliding on his knee to his left but couldnt make a play, loading the bases. Reyes was given a single. Duda walked to score a run. Clay Hensley (2-6) then went to a 2-1 count to Wright before he was pulled for a reliever. "I dont really know what to say about it," Hensley said. "Id better keep it to a minimum tonight so I dont get myself in trouble." Said McKeon: "I just couldnt afford to have a walk, and I knew he was going to pitch very carefully to Wright. He got 2-1 and looked like he didnt have the strike zone, so I made the move." Hensley gave up four runs -- two earned -- in two-plus innings. Facing Burke Badenhop, Wright lined a single up the middle to score two runs. Center fielder Bryan Petersen made an offline throw that missed the cutoff man and went past the catcher, allowing Duda to move up to third and Wright to second. After an out, Badenhop threw a pitch that bounced in the dirt and went through catcher Brett Hayes legs for a passed ball. Duda raced home for a 4-2 lead. Batista began the season with St. Louis and was 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA in 26 games, including one start, but was released in June. He joined the Mets in July and went 3-0 with a 4.24 ERA at Triple-A Buffalo. He gave up a single to Bonifacio, a hard shot that went through second baseman Tejadas legs, to start the game and walked two in the first. Mike Stanton hit a sacrifice fly for the early lead. Bonifacio hit an RBI double in the second, but Batista got double plays in the third and sixth with runners on first and second to shut down the Marlins. The Mets added three runs in the eighth aided by a throwing error by reliever Steve Cishek on Angel Pagans sacrifice bunt. Duda had an RBI single and Mike Nickeas a run-scoring single. CALGARY -- Dylan Armstrong saved his best for last in the mens shot put competition at the Canadian track and field championship on Saturday. The Kamloops, B.C., native improved on his own Canadian record after heaving the shot 22.21 metres on his sixth and final throw. He let out a triumphant scream when the distance was announced. "I was happy," said Armstrong, 30, who won his sixth Canadian title. "Ive been cranking a few out over that mark in training. It was overdue. Im actually happy that I broke the Canadian record at the Canadian senior championships. "I had a lot of people come up to me and say that it would probably be pretty memorable for them. Its kind of cool to hear that." Armstrong also had throws of 21.75, 21.89 and 21.78, while his closest competitor Timothy Nedow of Brockville, Ont., won the silver medal with a toss of 18.69 metres. Andrew Smith of Carrot River, Sask., finished third at 18.24. "A lot of the younger guys have really stepped up as well so theyre looking good," said Armstrong, who still has a ways to go to break the world record of 23.12 metres set by American Randy Barnes back in 1990. "The futures looking good for everyone." Armstrongs future will include a trip to the world championships Aug. 27 to Sept. 4 in Daegu, South Korea. "Im just going to keep my head down and keep pushing towards Daegu," said Armstrong. "I got a really good finger flick on that last one. You get in that real patient position and just strike it and everything feels good but at the same time effortless too." While she didnt set a Canadian record, Julie Labonte of Ste-Justine, Que., did set a meet record in the womens shot put competition with a throw of 18.12 metres. "I wanted to do more, but its still good for me," said Labonte, who also won gold in womens discus on Friday. "Ive been working really hard. To win two gold medals this weekend is really amazing." Toronto sprinter Crystal Emmanuel also snagged her second gold medal of the meet on Saturday when she won the womens 200-metre final in a time of 22.99 seconds. After the race, Emmanuel fell to the track in pain favouring her right foot. "I was running in the middle of the race, I felt a pop at the side of my foot," said Emmanuel, who also prevailed in the womens 100-metre final on Friday to become the first woman to accomplish that feat since Hamiltons Erica Witter won both the 100 and 200 in 2003. "It hurt, but I pushed through it. Im glad I pushed through it and didnt stop." Bryan Barnett of Edmonton, won the mens 200-metre final in a time of 20.71 seconds to edge out Jared Connaughton of New Haven, P.E.I., by four hundredths of a second. In the womens 100-metre hurdles final, Perdita Felicien won her 10th Canadian title with a time of 12.80 seconds. "Youll probably get me trying it for another two or three more and then after that Ive got to shut it down," said Felicien, a native of Pickering, Ont., who recently relocated to Calgary to concentrate on training with coach Les Gramantik. "To race and win here is very, very exciting. Its my new home. "Pickering will always be my hometown, but everyone here has really been warm and embraced me, so its kind of nice to show up and for them today and win 10 here." After initially being charged with a false start, Pickerings Nikkita Holder ran the race under protest and finished in third behind Phylicia George of Markham, Ont. Later Holders disqualification was overturned and she was awarded the bronze. In the mens 110-metre hurdles final, Pickerings Ingvar Moseley won in a time of 14.26 seconds despite knocking down several barriers. "I clipped a lot but theres one that I really hammered," said Moseley, 19, whose next goal is to break the 14 second barrier. "I feel like I would have been there if I didnt stumble a bit. Its all good coming out with the W." Adam Kunkel of Whitby, Ont., won the mens 400-metre hurdles in a time of 50.80 to edge out Gabriel El Hanbli of Repentigny, Que., by two hundredths of a second. The womens 400-metre hurdles wasnt as close as Sage Watson of Medicine Hat, Alta., won in a time of 59.72, which was more than a second ahead of Traci Boss (1:00.96) of Coquitlam, B.C. Meanwhile, Mark Dillon of Bowmanville, Ont., won gold in mens high jump by clearing the bar at 2.19 metres in less attempts than three other competitors who accomplished the same feat. Torontos Jacob Zorzella won the mens triple jump with a leap of 16.11 metres, while Caroline Ehrhardt of Espanola, Ont., prevailed in womens triple jump (12.64). Jenna Martin of Caledonia, N.S., won the womens 400-metre final in a time of 51.95 seconds, while Tremaine Harris of Markham, Ont., prevailed in the mens 400-metre final in 46.24 seconds. Sheila Reid of Newmarket, Ont., captured gold in the womens 1,500-metre race in 4:16.97, while Nathan Brannan of Cambridge, Ont., won the mens 1,500-metre final in 3:50.33. Evan Dunfee of Richmond, B.C., won the mens 20-km race walk in a time of 1:25:15.0, while Rachel Seaman of Peterborough, Ont., won the womens 20 km race walk in 1:37:46.0. In the junior mens 10 km race walk, Benjamin Thorne of Kitimat, B.C., set a new Canadian junior record with a time of 41:34. Megan Wylie of Langley, B.C., won the junior womens race walk final in 53:53. In the womens 400-metre para-ambulatory race, Noella Klawitter of Carelton Place, Ont., Meghan OBrien of Kitchener, Ont., and Leah Robinson of Petersburg, Ont., each won their classification. In the mens 400-metre para-ambulatory race, Dustin Walsh of New Westminster, B.C., Brandon King of Brampton, Ont., Ottawas Stuart McGregor and Rick Ball of Orillia, Ont., prevailed in their classifications. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A person familiar with the negotiations says the Denver Broncos have signed former Chicago Bears backup quarterback Caleb Hanie to a two-year deal to back up Peyton Manning. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hadnt been announced by the team. ESPNChicago.com first reported the deal earlier Saturday. Hanie, 26, who played at Colorado State, spent the last three seasons in Chicago. He replaced an injured Jay Cutler in the NFC championship two years ago and nearly rallied the Bears past the Packers. But he went 0-4 in place of Cutler last season, including at loss at Denver. The Broncos signed Manning on Monday and then dealt Tim Tebow to the New York Jets. They also considered signing free agent Billy Volek. nfl jerseys china . DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings popped off the bench and skated slowly toward goaltender Ty Conklin to congratulate him as if it was just another victory on Monday night. Tomas Holmstrom scored two goals to help Detroit beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-2 and clinch a team-record 21st straight playoff appearance. The Red Wings said it was easy to explain their reaction to extending their playoff streak that is the best active run in professional sports and three times longer than any current one in the league. "I think the bar is higher," Henrik Zetterberg said. "Thats another thing we dont think about. We just go out, we expect to be in the playoffs, but it is a nice record and hopefully we will keep it going for many years." The NBAs San Antonio Spurs are expected to extend their playoff streak to 15 years; the Philadelphia Phillies have been in five straight postseasons in baseball; and the Baltimore Ravens have been in the NFL playoffs four consecutive years. San Jose, the only team other than Detroit to be in the playoffs every year since the NHL lockout, has the second-longest post-season streak at seven and that run is in jeopardy this season. Detroit broke its franchise record of 20 straight years of reaching the playoffs set from 1939-58. "For sure, its something special," Holmstrom said. Holmstrom scored twice to help the Red Wings take a 4-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. They had a 6-0 cushion midway through the second period and a seven-goal lead early in the third. "You know, were playing just for pride and nobody likes that," Columbus centre Derick Brassard said. "No one likes to get embarrassed." The Blue Jackets are -- by 16 points -- in last place in the NHL with 55 points, but interim coach Todd Richards doesnt think his team has given up on the season. "Quits a strong word," Richards said. The Red Wings have won two straight after dropping six in a row. Detroit is a point ahead of Nashville and five points in front of Chicago to be the fourth-seeded team -- with home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs -- with six games left in the regular season. The Red Wings will host the Predators on Friday night and the Blackhawks on April 7 to close the regular season. "We have to get better and feel good about our game," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. The Red Wings have won an NHL-high 30 games at home, including a league-record 23 in a row earlier this season. Holmstrom, who hadnt scored in his previous 28 games, helped Detroit get off to a strong start against the Blue Jackets, who had players fall and turn the puck over without a Red Wing near them in the opening minutes. Just 1:06 into the game, Holmstrom scored easily from the right side of the net on a tic-tac-toe play set up by perfect passes from Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall. Gustav Nyquist scored his first NHL goal in his 12th game at the 5:35 mark of the first period. Holmstrom scored his second goal, also on a power play, and Jiri Hudler had a goal less than a minute apart midway through the first period to make it 4-0. The Red Wings looked as if they were toying with the Blue Jackets at times. Pavel Datsyuk made a no-look pass on Nyquists goal as if he had a rear-view mirror on the side of his helmet. "Its just that sense he has of finding players all the time with passes," Lidstrom said. Later, Zetterberg dropped a pass between his legs to set up Holmstroms second goal. Nicklas Lidstrom and Brad Stuart scored in the first half of the second period and Datsyuk added another goal early in the third to put the Red Wings ahead 7-0. Columbus Mark Letestu scored 19 seconds later in the third to avoid the shutout and Rick Nash had a goal midway through the period to make it 7-2. Conklin, playing for the injured Jimmy Howard, had 24 saves. Steve Mason gave up six goals on 28 shots and was pulled in favour of Allen York by Richards for the second straight game. Allen allowed a goal on 11 shots. "We couldve had Patrick Roy in there, Ken Dryden, wouldnt have mattered," Richards said. "You cant fault the goaltender on the first four. It was too easy for them." NOTES: Howard said he hopes to play Friday against Nashville while Johan Franzen (back) and Jonathan Ericsson (left wrist) may play Wednesday at Columbus. ... Columbus scratched James Wisniewski, who hasnt played since he was hit in the face by a puck last week, Derek MacKenzie (concussion), Fedor Tyutin (broken right hand) and Curtis Sanford (leg muscle tear). ... Monday was the 15th anniversary of the Avalanche-Red Wings brawl in which Detroits Darren McCarty fought Colorados Claude Lemieux, leading to Roy of the Avs and Mike Vernon of the Red Wings dropping their gloves. ... Letestu has points in eight of the past 11 games. ... Zetterberg and Todd Bertuzzi each finished with four assists. cheap jerseys from china . The Lightning have won four straight games, leaving them one victory shy of the season-high, five-game tear from Jan. 17-31. With the Labour Day Classics now in the books, the CFL schedule makes its midseason turn to the fall. The games get all the more important now leading up to the postseason, but theres just time enough to look back at the first half and award the midseason Most Outstanding Player. It comes down to a three-horse race with two of those horses wearing the green of the first place Saskatchewan Roughriders, but ultimately Toronto Argonauts QB Ricky Ray deserves the most MOP consideration for his outstanding first half. Ray and Roughriders QB Darian Durant have had similarly spectacular starts to the season but what gives Ray the edge is he isnt working with a potential record breaking running back in Kory Sheets (the other candidate for the midseason MOP), taking pressure off the pass game. Ray has missed some time so far this season (and is expected to miss a lot more in the second half) but when hes on the field hes nearly automatic. His 78 percent completion rate is 10 points higher than any other QB in the league and his 15 touchdowns to zero interceptions is almost unheard of. The 33-year-old continues to deliver even with teams keying on the Double Blues passing game. Ray has been without his top RB Chad Kackert for most of the season and Torontos ground game has produced just 718 yards combined on the season, just more than 60 percent of Sheets total alone. Durants stat line (21 touchdowns to one interception) is just as breathtaking as Rays; what Sheets has done in the first half is historic (and we all know how much the league loves record breakers); and the Riders league leading 8-1 record all made the decision anything but easy, but Ray and the Argos passing game has led the team to an East leading 5-4 record with little to no help on the ground. You could argue Durant and Sheets are splitting votes at the time. Durant and Sheets will have plenty of time to catch up by seasons end, and with Ray out for up to the next five weeks now the award is all but guaranteed to go to someone else when the votes count, but for now Rays incredible renaissance in the Big Smoke continues. Fringe candidates to keep an eye on in the second half of the season include last years winner Chad Owens and last years runner-up Jon Cornish, and the leagues passing leader Henry Burris. And if the award could be shared among teammates, the Calgary Stampeders trio at quarterback would deserve consideration as well. The Rouge asks: Who is your midseason Most Outstanding Player? The idea of suffering from a sophomore slump is not something that crossed Gallaghers mind.MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Its NCAA chances all but gone, West Virginia showed it still has some fight left in a lacklustre season. West Virginia built a 25-point lead and had to withstand 41 points by freshman Andrew Wiggins and a furious comeback by No. 8 Kansas to upset the Jayhawks 92-86 in their Big 12 regular-season finale Saturday. "We just had to stay composed, not get too down, dont say, dang, theyre going to come back," said Eron Harris, who led West Virginia with 28 points. "Youve got to always have confidence in your team that youre going to win." The Mountaineers (17-14, 9-9 Big 12) could have finished with a thud like they had in losing four of their five previous games that reduced them to playing for a spot in the NIT. The young Mountaineers, who have no seniors, watched Kansas tear into the deficit behind Wiggins, who set a season high for scoring and a freshman record for the Jayhawks before fouling out in the final seconds. He also eight rebounds, four blocks and five steals, to go along with 12-of-18 shooting from the field. Ben McLemore has the Kansas single-game freshman scoring record with 36 last season. West Virginia made some clutch free throws in the final minute to thwart the comeback and keep coach Bob Huggins sanity intact. "When we get a little more experience, well handle those things a little better," said Huggins, who earned $25,000 for beating Kansas in the regular season, one of the bonus clauses in a 2012 contract extension. Juwan Staten added 24 points and Devin Williams, WVUs star freshman, had a season-high 22 points along with 13 rebounds. It marked the first time this season that Kansas had allowed three opposing players to score 20 points. "I thought Staten controlled the game," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Harris was terrific and Williams was by far the best big in the game. "They were terrific and then we didnt guard at all. Weve gone through stretches this year where we havent guarded well, but thats probably as poor as weve been. But give them credit, they were a lot better than us offensively than we were defensively." West Virginia shot 53 per cent from the floor and outrebounded Kansas 37-31. Perry Ellis added 14 points for Kansas (23-8, 14-4), whicch clinched its 10th straight regular-season title a week ago and had little riding on this game.ddddddddddddThe Jayhawks will have a first-round bye in the conference tournament that begins Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo. Kansas was without 7-foot freshman Joel Embiid, who sat out his second straight game to rest a lower back strain. Tarik Black, starting in Embiids place, went to the bench with his second foul four minutes into the game. The Mountaineers led nearly the entire game but fell apart down the stretch. Still, West Virginia managed to beat a ranked team for the third time in seven tries over the past month. Kansas went more than seven minutes without a field goal spanning the halves and found itself with its biggest deficit of the season, 64-39, with 16:43 left in the game after a Harris 3-pointer. But the Mountaineers have had trouble holding double-digit leads this season, and Kansas -- especially Wiggins -- was hardly done. West Virginia struggled against Kansas full-court press, and Wiggins followed Landen Lucas three-point play with four free throws and a 3-pointer over a 47-second span to pull Kansas within 78-68 with 6:13 remaining. Wiggins scored 14 straight points at one point for the Jayhawks. Frank Masons 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 85-80 with 1:24 left. But West Virginia made 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute to hang on. Backups Lucas and Jamari Traylor couldnt keep up with Williams, who scored 10 straight points for the Mountaineers at one point. He had 18 in the first half to give the Mountaineers a 50-38 halftime lead -- the most points given up by the Jayhawks in the first half this season. "I thought Devin played really well," Huggins said. "(He) scored it through contact and made open shots, which he does in practice. And then he rebounds the ball for us. Hes the one guy who can really go rebound it in a crowd." West Virginia had its second sellout of the season, thanks to hundreds of Kansas fans who made the 900-mile trek east and those especially coming to see Wiggins, who played his high school ball on the other side of the state at Huntington Prep. "Ive never seen him play like that," Huggins said. "When he makes shots hes really difficult to defend." ' ' '

VANCOUVER -- After using scoring and speed to become the best team in the NHL this season the Vancouver Canucks turned to crash and bash to win the opening game of their playoff series against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Canucks plan to keeping laying on the muscle when they face the Blackhawks Friday in the second game of the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final. Chicago workhorses like Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith can expect to find themselves in the Vancouver cross-hairs. "Were going to try to hit those guys any chance we get," rugged forward Tanner Glass said Thursday after the Canucks practised at Rogers Arena. "Those guys are playing a ton of minutes. Any time you get to bump them, its going to wear them down. That goes a long ways in a long series." Vancouver outhit the defending Stanley Cup champions 47-21 in winning Wednesdays first game 2-0. Bruising centre Maxim Lapierre, acquired at the trade deadline, led the assault with eight solid checks. Defenceman Alex Edler, playing just his second game since returning to the lineup following back surgery, dealt out seven. "In the playoffs you want to be physical," said Lapierre, who had three goals and an assist in the Montreal Canadiens playoff run last year. "It is a long series and you want to be physical on every guy out there." The Canucks, who won the Presidents Trophy for the best record in the NHL, cruised into the playoffs playing a string of meaningless games. The Hawks had to battle down the stretch and needed a loss by Dallas on the final day of the season to back into the final playoff spot in the West. Coach Alain Vigneault plans to keep exploiting the travel-weary, battle-fatigued Hawks. "Its just part of the process, part of the things we have to do," said Vigneault. "Chicago came in here. They had played five games in eight nights. Five stressful and intense games. We felt it was important for us to come out with a good start." Defenceman Brian Campbell said the Canucks strategy isnt a surprise and Chicago just needs to react better in Game 2. "I dont think we did a great job with our physical play," said Campbell. "We know they are going to keep it up. We just have to be better ourselves in taking the man." History isnt on the Canucks side as they try to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Vancouver has never beaten Chicago in Game 2 of the four playoff series they have played against the Blackhawks. The Canucks have lost those games by a combined score of 16-6. Vancouver has won the opening game of a Chicago series three times, including the last two seasons when the Blackhawks went on to eliminate the Canucks from the second round of the playoffs. Forward Alex Burrows bristled when reminded of past series lost. He said the Canucks are a more mature team this year with better defence, while the Blackhawks have lost many of the muckers and grinders that gave Vancouver fits last year. "I dont know why people dont understand that," said Burrows. "Its different players, a different year, a different lot of things. "For us, we just approach it like we are a much different team. We didnt finish first overall for no reason. We play our game like we can, to our strengths." Defenceman Brent Seabrook said the Blackhawks have to control their own fate. "We have to refocus and get ready," he said. "We have to come out with a good effort. "We have to play our game and come out and take it too them." The Canucks won the opening game, but they didnt overpower the Hawks. Goaltender Roberto Luongo made 32 saves for the shutout, including a game-changing, first-period toe save off a shot by Campbell. Daniel Sedin, the NHLs scoring leader, and twin brother Henrik were both kept off the scoresheet. Ryan Kesler, a 41-goal scorer during the regular season, had one assist but blocked a shot that set up another Canuck goal. "I dont think we played our best game," said Henrik Sedin, the Canucks captain. "We are going to put our best game on the ice tomorrow." Getting a split in Vancouver would give the Blackhawks a huge lift as they return home for Sundays Game 3. Being down 2-0 could be the beginning of the end. "We know whats at stake," said Chicago defenceman Chris Campoli. "Its a huge game. "We have to come out and match that intensity, if not take it too them." For the Canucks, winning Game 2 would put them in the drivers seat. A loss could open the door to doubts and second guessing. "We are going to try and play with the intensity and the same focus we had," said Vigneault. "We know they are going to be better. We are going to have to have our execution and our work boots on. And we are going to have to be better. Theres a lot of hard work right now and we are going to have to be ready for it." nfl jerseys wholesale . The contract was reached over the weekend, pending a physical, the person told The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to finalize the deal. "Its almost a week since we last played and this is part of our preparation for the next round," Therrien told the media. The players participated in a simulated morning skate at 10:30am, their usual practice time on game day, and then headed to the Bell Centre at 5pm with their families to take part in some activities the team has planned forr them, followed by a scrimmage with members of the Hamilton Bulldogs.dddddddddddd "Its good for us to feel the speed of the game again and to get our timing back,” PK Subban said following practice. “Its tough when youve been off for a few days to keep your timing, so it will be good to get in a scrimmage.” It will be a closed door event with the public and the media not allowed to attend.
