DURHAM, N.C. -- Eastern Michigan isnt undefeated against Duke anymore. The Eagles simply couldnt keep the ninth-ranked Blue Devils off the boards in an 82-59 loss Saturday. This was just the second meeting between the schools -- the Earl Boykins-led Eagles upset Duke in the first round of the 1996 NCAA tournament -- and Eastern Michigans struggles on the glass led to a lopsided loss in the rematch 18 years later. Duke outrebounded the Eagles 47-32 and had 20 offensive rebounds. "Its important -- the shot goes up, we have to rebound the ball," Eastern Michigan coach Rob Murphy said. "I thought we did a great job of showing and forcing them into some contested shots. But we gave up 20 offensive rebounds. "To be successful, ultimately, the way we play, we have to rebound the basketball and we didnt do a great job of that tonight." Mike Talley scored 20 points to lead the Eagles (7-4), while Karrington Ward scored 11 points and Sims finished with 10. Eastern Michigan kept this a game into the second half, but went 6 minutes between field goals during the critical stretch when Duke pulled away. For Duke, Jabari Parker scored 23 points and Andre Dawkins had season highs of 20 points and six 3-pointers. With Rodney Hood fighting an illness that he said caused him to flee the court and throw up, Dawkins was summoned from the bench to make a surprise start moments before the opening tip. And the fifth-year senior who sat out last season sure made the most of it. He finished with his highest point total since scoring 22 and hitting six 3s in a win at Florida State in 2012. "Its a little bit different coming off, not playing for a year, and trying to play at this level," Dawkins said. "So, it took some time, but Im getting there. But its still a process." Rasheed Sulaimon added 13 for Duke (10-2) and came up with the key hustle play during the decisive second-half run that helped them polish off their fourth straight win. Duke shot 40 per cent against Eastern Michigans tough zone defence while hitting 10 3-pointers, and wrapped up the pre-ACC home schedule with its 101st straight nonconference win at Cameron Indoor Stadium. "We knew they played zone, so we were going to get open looks on the offensive end, but we really wanted to focus on stopping them," Dawkins said. "It was a big task to try and stop them but I think we did a pretty good job." The Blue Devils led just 43-35 with 15 minutes left before breaking the game open with a 15-1 run. Quinn Cook and Hood hit 3-pointers roughly 25 seconds apart before Sulaimons key hustle play. He had Eagles guard J.R. Sims trapped near midcourt when Sims tried to spike the ball off Sulaimon and out of bounds -- but the ball instead rolled down the sideline toward the Duke basket. Sulaimon scooped it up, was fouled hard by Sims -- who received a flagrant foul -- on his way to the basket and hit the ensuing two free throws to stretch the lead to 53-35 with 13:12 left. Dawkins 3-pointer roughly 3 minutes later gave the Blue Devils their first 20-point lead at 56-36. Amile Jefferson -- who started the run with a free throw with 14:28 left -- hit a foul shot to push it to 58-36 with 10:25 remaining, and they pulled away from there. Jefferson finished with a career-high 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who have had at least one 20-point scorer in every game this season. Its the first time thats happened at Duke since the eventual national champion 2000-01 team did it in its first 17 games. Ten of those 20-point games now belong to Parker, who led or shared the teams scoring lead for the eighth time. He scored 14 of Dukes 37 points in the first half after hitting six of his first 11 shots, including a pair of thunderous alley-oop dunks. That helped make up for an off day for Hood, who averages 18.5 points but finished with eight on 3-of-8 shooting. He also had eight rebounds while playing through his unspecified illness. Coach Mike Krzyzewski said he received an IV at halftime. "He wasnt the same guy," Krzyzewski said. nfl jerseys china . Tony Stewart, part-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing and Patricks boss, told Performance Racing Networks "Fast Talk" program on Wednesday that he has told Patrick she should challenge the seven-time championship winner to a one-on-one race. "I think that (a race) would settle it once and for all – maybe get him to shut up a little bit, too," Stewart said. "I will supply the cars. If he wants to race her, Ill make sure they have exactly the same setup in the car and give him the chance.dddddddddddd He can drive one of my 14 cars, I dont care." Petty, 76, said last week that the only way Patrick could win was if no one else was on the track - remarks that Patrick ignored. Petty reiterated Saturday that he stands by his comments. "What I said is what I said," he explained. "And thats what I believe, okay?" When it was suggested to Stewart that Patrick, if she ever wins a race, should take the checkered flag to Petty to autograph, Stewart responded: "If I were her, Id take it over there and cram it up his (butt)." BOSTON -- Meryl Davis and Charlie White didnt have to think about their footwork and spins. Those elements of their short dance were near-flawless, as is frequently the case with the world champions. They could plunge into telling the story of the selections from "My Fair Lady" at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Friday. Davis and White broke their own record with 80.69 points to open a big lead, well on their way to a sixth straight national title. "This is the first time we felt comfortable enough to let things happen naturally," Davis said. "This is the fifth time were competing the program. With this program, its all about being comfortable enough to let things happen naturally, and when you reach a point where it can be just fun, thats what we really enjoy about skating." Davis and White are more than seven points ahead of Madison Chock and Evan Bates, last years runners-up. On the final lift, they spun across the ice in a dizzying blur with the tails of Whites tuxedo flying behind, and she could look up to the crowd with eyes glowing. Coach Marina Zoueva had wanted them to skate to this music for several years. "As we have grown with the program, we fell in love with the program and what it means ... that exuberant joy," Davis said. For all of Davis and Whites accomplishments, they still needed to settle into their programs in this Olympic year, so that things will happen naturally when they get to Sochi. On Friday, they looked ready to try to take that one step up the podium from their silver medal showing at the Vancouver Games. "Because we put pressure on ourselves throughout our career, its kind of a healthy pressure," White said. "Its what gets us through the tough times, that we rely on each other." Chock and Bates posted a career-high 73.41, well above their 70.80 a year ago but still far behind Davis and White. Chock fell in practice Wednesday, crashing hard into the boards, but said she was fine other than a little soreness in her shoulders. Siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani were third with 68.00 in a repeat of the final standings in 2013. The top three teams make the Olympics. The free dance is Saturday. When the final notes of "Theres No Business Like Show Business" ended, Bates barked out, "Lets go!" Their coach told them before they took the ice, "Skate to win." "Thats good advice," Bates said. After reviewing footage of the incident, the FA said the standard suspension would be "clearly insufficient" and gave Hazard until Tuesday to respond to the charge. Hazard was sent off for kicking a ball boy in the 79th minute of the Wednesdays League Cup semifinal match against Swansea as the Belgium winger attempted to retrieve the ball after it had rolled out of play. The 17-year-old ball boy refused to return the ball promptly and dropped down on top of it, prompting Hazard to aim a kick underneath the teenager to release the ball. Both Hazard and the ball boy, Charlie Morgan, apologized to each other after the match and were spoken to by police. Morgan and his family said they would not be pressing ccharges and South Wales Police said Friday that they were no longer involved in the matter, having been obliged to follow up three complaints by members of the public.dddddddddddd In the FAs statement, the governing body said it will be reminding "all clubs of their responsibilities in ensuring ball boys and other personnel around the pitch act in an appropriate manner at all times." Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins said he was eager to move on from the incident. "On a personal note I find it remarkable that there is any thought of police action," Jenkins said Friday. "Things are done in the heat of the moment and probably everybody looks back and wishes things had been done differently. We accept how things are and all move forward." Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez said any disciplinary action taken against Hazard by the club was an "internal" matter. ' ' '

CHICAGO -- The string of bad weather continued at Wrigley Field. Several other trends show signs of reversing. Aramis Ramirez ended a long home run drought, Canadian Ryan Dempster threw six solid innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 in a rain-delayed game Sunday. "I have a long way to go," Ramirez said. "Hopefully, I keep driving the ball." Ramirezs line drive solo shot in the second broke a streak of 155 at-bats without a home run, the second longest stretch of his career. Ramirez went 170 at-bats between homers from Aug. 2, 1998, until April 21, 2000. "He put a great swing on that ball," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "Those home runs are going to come for him." Dempster (4-4) recovered from a poor first inning to post his fifth quality start in his last six outings. After allowing two runs, a walk and Lyle Overbays two-run double in the first, Dempster settled down to shut out the Pirates on four hits over the next five innings. "There is a lot of game left after (the first inning)," the native of Gibsons,B.C., said. "Just keep going out there and getting outs and making pitches." Dempster allowed four hits and two runs overall, striking out five and walking three. He beat the Pirates for first time in five starts dating to May 4, 2010. After a rough April, Dempster is now 3-1 with a 3.08 ERA in his last six outings. "A few pitches got away from him in that first inning," Quade said. "Weve talked a little about him regrouping and getting himself back in tune with command of his pitches. After that first inning, he was able to do that. Hes had a great May." The Cubs got three scoreless innings from their bullpen, one each from Kerry Wood, Sean Marshall and closer Carlos Marmol, who earned his 10th save. "Thats kind the way we left spring training drawing it up," Quade said. "Well (like) a three-run lead in the ninth, but those are the kind of things you hope youll be able to do." The Cubs beat the Pirates for the second time in six games at Wrigley Field this season. Even after Sundays loss, the Pirates have beaten the Cubs in 16 of the last 23 meetings. "It seems like they always give us a tough time," Ramirez said. "Theyve got good pitching, good young players. But we should play better against them." Pirates starter Jeff Karstens (3-4) allowed three runs -- two earned -- and struck out four over five innings. Karstens, who recently took the rotation spot of injured Ross Ohelendorff, departed after throwing just 71 pitches. "We take two out of three and I had to be the guy that ended up losing that game," said Karstens. "We had a lot of road woes, but this year were doing a little bit better." The Cubs manufactured the go-ahead run in the third. Kosuke Fukudome led off with a double, went to third on Darwin Barneys sacrifice bunt and scored on Starlin Castros sacrifice fly. Overbay walked and drove in both Pittsburgh runs with his two-run double in the first. The game was delayed by two hours 34 minutes at the start because of heavy rain. However, once the storm front cleared the Chicago area, it was a mild and pleasant afternoon. The Cubs scored their first run in the second on the long-overdue homer from Ramirez, who has averaged 28 each of his seven full seasons with the Cubs. Carlos Pena, who followed with a single, has reached base in 21 of his last 23 games. Speedy Cubs rookie Tony Campana then hit a grounder to shortstop Ronny Cedeno and beat the throw, which skipped away from Overbay. Pena advanced to third on the play and Cedeno was charged with an error, snapping his 35-game errorless streak. Pena scored on Koyie Hills sacrifice fly to right. Pena beat the throw of Pirates right fielder Garrett Jones, but he slid into catcher Ryan Doumit, who left the game with what the Pirates called an injured left ankle. He was replaced by backup Chris Snyder. Doumit will undergo an MRI exam in Pittsburgh on Monday. "(Pena) came in hard and I am sitting there bracing, waiting for the throw and obviously weve seen these things happen in the past," Doumit said. "Its the nature of the beast." Some familiar Cubs nemises got the Pirates out to an early 2-0 lead. Andrew McCutchen and Neal Walker drew back-to-back walks against Dempster. Both scored on Overbays double into the right-field corner. McCutchen has now reached base safely in his last 21 games against the Cubs. Walker, who singled in the sixth, has hit safely in all 15 games hes played against Chicago in his career. "Were not disappointed," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "We went out and played a ballgame and they played better than us. We won the series. That was the objective coming in. Well move on. We had a chance to sweep, but we didnt sweep. We have to do things to win a game. We scored two in the first and we werent able to add anything after that." NOTES: Catcher Geovany Soto returned to the Cubs clubhouse after being activated off the DL. He hasnt played since May 10 because of a left groin strain. To make room for Soto, the Cubs optioned backup catcher Welington Castillo to Triple-A Iowa. Soto is expected to start in Mondays series opener against Houston. ... The Cubs placed CF Reed Johnson on the DL because of lower back spasms and recalled OF Brad Snyder from Iowa. The Cubs also had to clear space for Snyder on the teams 40-man roster, so they moved injured starter Andrew Cashner (right rotator cuff strain) to the 60-day disabled list. cheap nfl jerseys . HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros were happy to get a series win for the first time since the opening three games of the season on Tuesday night. They werent quite ready to celebrate it though, with one more game left in the three-game set with the New York Mets. "I dont think we can look at it that way now," Houstons Jed Lowrie said of winning the series. "Tomorrow is the most important game we have to play. Its nice to get these two, but its going to be more important to get the one tomorrow." Chris Snyder hit a three-run home run and Lowrie had a two-run shot to give the Astros a 6-3 win over the Mets. Lowries homer, off Jonathon Niese, which hit the inside of the foul pole in left field in the first inning, got things going for the Astros, who got a 4-3 win to open the series on Monday. The Astros had lost six consecutive series entering this set with the Mets. Snyder pushed the lead to 5-0 in the next inning with his first home run of the season, which landed in the Crawford Boxes in left field. Brian Bogusevic and Justin Maxwell hit consecutive singles to start that inning and set up Snyders shot. The Astros still rank in the bottom third of the league in home runs this season with 16 despite the two on Tuesday. Still, Snyder said its too early to write off Houston as not having much power. "I wouldnt look too deep into it. Its kind of a great hitters park," he said. "Weve got some guys that can leave it. Its not one of those things where you should expect to not see power from this team. Well get into the groove and youll start seeing the ball leave." Niese (2-1) allowed a season-high five runs and six hits in three innings. It was his shortest start since lasting just 2 2-3 innings on Sept. 29, 2010. Niese entered the game 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA this season and was 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in three career starts against Houston. He was disappointed to be pulled from the game so early. "Obviously, the competitiveness in me wanted to stay in the game," he said. "I had put up a zero, and I felt my stuff was good enough to keep the team in the game." Houston starter J.A. Happ (2-1) allowed six hits and three runs with seven strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings, which was his longest outing of the year. Relievers Wilton Lopez and Wesley Wright combined to allow one hit in 1 2-3 innings before Brett Myers threw a perfect ninth for his sixth save. Reliever Miguel Bautista walked Maxwell in the sixth inning, but Snyder grounded into a double play. Happ singled before Bautista walked Jose Altuve. He was replaced by Ramon Ramirez, who walked Lowrie. His bases-loaded walk of J.D. Martinez gave Houston an insurance run and made it 6-3. The Mets finally got out of that inning on a fly out by Carlos Lee. The Mets issued eight walks on Tuesday, including three to Lowrie. "You just cant put people on and expect to win major league baseball games, especially when you are walking in runs," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Its going to come back to burn you." Justin Turner walked with two outs in the fifth inning and scored after consecutive singles by David Wright and Scott Hairston to cut Houstons lead to 5-3. Happ got out of that inning by striking out Ike Davis after a short coaching visit to the mound. Happ allowed just one hit -- a single by Davis in the second -- through the first three innings. Turner doubled to start the fourth inning and Hairston walked with one out. A two-out single by Andres Torres scored Turner to make it 5-1. Josh Thole followed with a RBI single to centre field to get New York within 5-2. Happ struck out pinch-hitter Lucas Duda to limit the damage. NOTES: The Astros placed reliever Rhiner Cruz on the 15-day disabled list with a right ankle sprain and recalled RHP Enerio Del Rosario from Triple-A Oklahoma City after the game. ... Ace left-hander Jon Lester paced the Red Sox to a 6-3 win over Toronto with seven innings of one run ball. He improved to 15-8. Koji Uehara, the first reliable closer in Boston since Jonathan Papelbon left for Philadelphia two years ago, notched his 20th save. BLUE JAYS WATCH RED SOX CELEBRATE Prior to the game, Mark DeRosa told TSN.ca if the Red Sox clinched against the Blue Jays this weekend, he hoped Toronto players would watch the celebration and be energized by the scene, wanting to experience a similar feeling next year. Here is some post-game reaction: "These guys know whats at stake," manager John Gibbons said of his ballclub. "They know where were trying to go. Theyve got a great team over there, they really do. They ran away with a good division. Its not even close right now so that speaks volumes of how good they are. Tonights a perfect example, good pitching, good defence and a lot of hitting. I mean, thats a good recipe." "Its really frustrating because weve got the talent to be like that," said starter Esmil Rogers, who didnt get out of the third inning and fell to 5-8 on the year. "Weve got so many opportunities to do that and we didnt make it so I think God made a decision to give the opportunity to this team to make it. I hope that God gives the opportunity to us for next year so we can be cellebrating like that, too.dddddddddddd." "I mean thats what you play for," said DeRosa, who played on the great Braves teams of the late 1990s and early 2000s and won a World Series with the Giants in 2010. "I know you go through different phases in your career, wanting to establish yourself and then provide for your family but at the same time thats what its about. Hopefully it triggers something and guys are ready to roll. I mean, theyre a perfect example of a team that loves playing together and finding a way to win. They dont kill you with a bunch of names. Big Papi is one of the best hitters in the game. I mean, they just have a really good team top to bottom and they play together." RASMUS INJURED As of the publishing of this piece, centre fielder Colby Rasmus was in a Boston hospital undergoing a CT scan on his face. Rasmus was injured while taking his position before the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Gose, playing right field, made a warm-up throw in Rasmus direction. Rasmus wasnt looking and the ball hit him near the left eye. Gose was shaken after the game. "I threw the ball and I hit him in the face," said Gose. "I thought he was looking at me and I just tried to throw it to him and I hit him right in the face." Rasmus injury forced a complete restructuring of the outfield. Anthony Gose, who was to play in right field, moved to centre field. Rajai Davis shifted from left field to right. Kevin Pillar entered the game in Rasmus lineup spot and played left field. ' ' '

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- With the prospect of a trade for Dwight Howard fading and the season opener less than a week away, New Jersey Nets coach Avery Johnson was getting a feel for his team. That all changed Thursday when centre Brook Lopez broke his right foot, an injury that left Johnson shaking his head and considering his options. Lopez, the Nets leading scorer, had surgery Friday for a nondisplaced fracture. He was hurt in a pre-season game against the Knicks on Wednesday and will be sidelined at least six weeks and probably more. In the meantime, general manager Billy King acquired former all-star centre Mehmet Okur from Utah for a second-round draft pick, signed free agent guard DeShawn Stevenson and waived forward Ime Udoka. With the additions of Okur and Stevenson, the Nets have hit the salary cap, so their revamped team is set. It has one star, point guard Deron Williams, and a lot of new faces -- Okur, Stevenson, free agent forwards Shawne Williams and Sheldon Williams, rookies Marshon Brooks and forward Jordan Williams and holdovers Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Damion James and Kris Humphries. "Every day is a new day I tell our players," Johnson said Friday. "When you get up in the morning you think about being a difference maker. You think about positive energy. Everybody is undefeated now." The Nets (24-5 probably arent going to stay that way long. They open on Monday at Washington and play 10 of their first 14 games on the road. The home opener is Tuesday against Atlanta. "There is no surrender in how we react as coaches, how we approach practice," Johnson said. "Its not necessarily the situation we diagrammed going in, so we adjust. So if plan A doesnt work, you have to go to plan B and C and thats what we are doing." The big question is Okur, who is to practice with the team Saturday. "We needed another guy to fill in, but hes just not filling in," Johnson said. "Hes a veteran player. Hes had a solid career so far. He knows how to play and how to pass. Hes still shooting the ball pretty good." Okur played in 13 games last season while recovering from Achilles and back injuries. The 32-year-old Turk has averaged 13.7 points and 7.1 rebounds in 617 career games with Detroit and Utah. Deron Williams played with Okur in Utah, and the two spoke Thursday. "He was shocked a little bit at first, probably my reaction, but hes warming up to it and excited coming over, excited to play with me again," Deron Williams said. "Ill try to make the transition as easy as possible." Deron Williams said the Nets would not have to revamp their offence because Lopez played more on the outside than in the paint. "Its our team," Deron Williams said. "Whether I am comfortable or not, its our team. Weve got good guys, guys who know how to play basketball and make plays. Thats all we need as long as our defence is locked in. Guys can hit shots, hit big shots, and I think we do. I like we added DeShawne. He can hit shots but he also brings that toughness and can guard people." Johnson also is comfortable with his team, for now. "I know they will play hard," Johnson said. "When you have a team with Deron Williams as the point guard he will do a good job of quarterbacking the team." King expects Lopez to play in a game in six-to-eight weeks. Dr. Martin OMalley, a foot specialist, and team orthopedist Dr. Riley Williams III inserted a screw into the fifth metatarsal of Lopezs foot at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. OMalley said rehabilitation will start in two weeks. Lopez averaged 20.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in 82 games last season. "We go to him a lot late in games and stuff," Humphries said. "We wont have that. Well probably have to play at a little different pace and be sharper with the shooting and be more up and down and precise in executing on the break. Depending on who plays his minutes, well be more of an up-tempo team." Stevenson averaged 5.3 points and 1.2 assists in helping the Mavericks win their first title last season. He was used mostly in a defensive role and can score more if needed. "It probably will be tough coming from the team where I came from, but at the same time its a challenge," Stevenson said after his first practice with the Nets. "We were challenged to win a championship and this is a different type of challenge." wholesale jerseys .S. market to cash in on its global appeal. Then, just as her testimony was about to finish, she broke down in tears at what she said was the memory of the screams she heard on the night that the double-amputee athlete fatally shot his girlfriend in his South African home. Michelle Burger, a neighbour of Pistorius who took the stand on the second day of a trial watched around the world, remained calm through intense questioning by the chief defence lawyer. In a final exchange with the lead prosecutor on Tuesday, however, emotion washed over her as she recalled what she described as the terrified screams of a woman early on Valentines Day last year. "When Im in the shower, I relive her shouts," Burger said in an apparent reference to her trauma just after the shooting, when a police captain took her statement. When Gerrie Nel, the prosecutor, asked her about her emotions at the time, she said the experience was "quite raw" and her voice broke. Nel asked her how she was coping now. "Im coping fine," Burger insisted. "Its been a year." Burger, a university lecturer, lives 177 metres (193 yards) from Pistorius house, where his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, died in what the runner said was an accident. Burger testified that she heard a man and a woman shouting, then the sound of four gunshots. She said the womans screams continued during the gunshots and quickly faded away after the final one. She was the first witness called by the prosecution, which contends that Pistorius intentionally killed Steenkamp after a loud argument. Her testimony contradicts Pistorius account. He says he fired four times through the toilet cubicle door, hitting Steenkamp three times in the head, arm and hip or side area after thinking she was a dangerous intruder. He has pleaded not guilty. The defence contends that Burger may have been asleep when the gunshots were fired, and then mistakenly thought she was hearing gunfire when in fact it was the sound of Pistorius breaking the toilet cubicle door with a cricket bat after realizing he had shot his girlfriend. During cross-examination of Burger, chief defence lawyer Barry Roux suggested that she was mistaken in saying that she heard a woman screaming and that it was actually Pistorius shouting for help in a high voice after accidentally shooting Steenkamp. Giving sometimes grisly details of the killing of the 29-year-old model, Roux said Steenkamp was shot in the head, which would have resulted in brain damage and "no cognitive function" and so she wouldnt have been able too scream just after the last bullet struck, as Burger testified.dddddddddddd Roux said that an expert would later testify in the trial that "with the head shot, she (Steenkamp) would have dropped down immediately." Burger disagreed. "I heard her voice just after the last shot," she said. "It faded away." Her husband, Charl Johnson, also testified that "the last scream faded moments after the last gunshot was fired." Burger also said that the man she heard -- before the sound of the gunfire -- was calling for help, a piece of testimony that muddied the prosecutions narrative that Pistorius was the aggressor. Challenged by Roux, Burger speculated that perhaps the voice was that of Pistorius ridiculing Steenkamps calls for help. "Was it a mockery? I dont know. Im not Mr. Pistorius," she said. Pistorius, who faces a minimum of 25 years in prison without parole if convicted of premeditated murder, took notes during testimony and huddled with lawyers during adjournments. His collected demeanour contrasted with his sometimes distraught behaviour during a bail hearing last year, when he sobbed in court. At one point on Tuesday he covered his ears, but it wasnt clear why. Pistorius, 27, was born without fibula bones because of a congenital defect and his legs were amputated when he was 11 months old. He has run on carbon-fiber blades and was originally banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage. He was later cleared to compete. He is a multiple Paralympic medallist but he failed to win a medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Steenkamps mother, June, said in a television interview that she did not want to live with bitterness. "Ive lost everything thats important to me, and still, I can forgive. I can forgive," she told NBCs "Today" show. "One must forgive." June Steenkamp was in court Monday, hoping to look Pistorius in the eye. But, she said, Pistorius "never looked my way, or he didnt have an opportunity to do that." Judge Thokozile Masipa will ultimately deliver the verdict and decide on any sentence. South Africa has no trial by jury. Tuesdays proceedings were interrupted when Masipa ordered an investigation into allegations that a South African television channel was broadcasting a photograph of Burger during her testimony -- against a court order guaranteeing privacy to witnesses who request it. "I am warning the media," the judge said, "if you do not behave, you are not going to be treated with soft gloves by this court." ' ' '

MADRID, Spain -- Athletic Bilbao secured its return to the Champions League next season by winning 3-0 at Rayo Vallecano on Friday to lock up a fourth-place finish in the Spanish league. With Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona destined to take the top three spots, Bilbao fended off Sevillas late surge to seal its return to Europes top-tier competition for the first time since the 1998-99 season. The Basque side qualified for the playoff round to reach the group phase. "When I think back on how difficult this year has been, on how much we have won and lost, and to see this now, we have to enjoy it," Bilbao defender Mikel San Jose said while his teammates celebrated with a large group of their travelling fans. Bilbaos quest of reaching the Champions League was led by coach Ernesto Valverde, a former player who returned to coach the club a second time this summer after the exit of Marcelo Bielsa. Bilbao kept Rayos attack in check while taking advantage of a number of well-executed set pieces. After Mikel Rico and Aritz Aduriz both went close with shots resulting from corner kicks, San Jose acrobatically tapped in a ball from Markel Susaeta in the 20th minute to open the scoring. Forward Oscar de Marcos added a second goal 10 minutes later when he fired in a loose ball from a fourth corner kick, and Ander Herrera curled his free kick around the defensive wall and in off the post in the 74th to cap the win. The match in Madrid was twice delayed due to incidents involving both groups of supporters. The kickoff was 15 minutes late to let the Vallecas Stadium grounds crew clean up a large amount of paper bits Rayos home fans threw onto the pitch while festively celebrating before the game. TORONTO, Ontario -- As the captain of the Hamilton Bulldogs, Martin St. Pierre relishes the opportunity to be the go-to guy. St. Pierre scored twice, including the game winner, as the Bulldogs edged the host Toronto Marlies 2-1 on Saturday in American Hockey League action. It was the Bulldogs second win in five meetings with the Marlies this season but its first against Toronto in regulation time. "Weve had some troubles winning games in this building," St. Pierre said about the Ricoh Coliseum. "Weve played well. Its good to get contributions from every body and get the two points in this building." The win puts Hamilton in a three-way tie with Toronto and Lake Erie atop the North Division standings. St. Pierre scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season to give Hamilton (11-10-3) a 2-0 lead. But Korbinian Holzer responded for the Marlies (12-9-1) at 17:44 of the second period to cut the Bulldogs lead in half. "Marty bounced back. I dont think he liked his game last night (in Lake Erie)," said Bulldogs head coach, Sylvain Lefebvre. "He bounced back with two big goals tonight." Toronto had an excellent chance to tie it with 3:22 remaining in the third with Nick Tarnasky off for high sticking. Kevin Marshall had the Marlies best chance with the man advantage, but his shot from the top of the face-off circle sailed over the crossbar. "It couldve (been costly) and thats what makes our team," said Lefebvre of the late penalty. "The other guys wanted to bail guys out and thats what makes a winning team. Youre there for one another and you care for one another." Drew MacIntyre made 21 saves for just his second loss on home ice this season. Robert Mayer made 22 saves in the win. St. Pierre one-timed a Mike Blunden feed past a sprawling MacIntyre for his first goal of the game at 11:52 of the first period. Then at 1:02 of the second, St. Pierre put home a no-look feed from Christian Thomas. The goal marked St. Pierres team-leading 22nd point of the season. "We knew we had to get a good dump-in and work their defence," St. Pierre said of the game-winner. "It was a great forecheck by Patrick Holland and a great pass by Thomas." Holzer beat Mayer from a sharp angle for his second goal of the season with Hamiltons Tarnasky off serving a double minor for butt-ending Jamie Devane at 15:59 of the second period. The Montreal Canadiens sent forward Louis Leblanc down to the American Hockey Leagues Hamilton Bulldogs on Monday night, a move that did not sit well with girlfriend Aleksandra Wozniak. The Montreal-born tennis player criticized the move through social media on Tuesday, calling out the Canadiens organization for giving up too quickly on the 2009 first-round pick in the preseason. "He did everything the CH organisation told him to do and what...got cut this early?!," she wrote in English on her Twitter account @alekswoz. "Oh and the reason...worst excuse ever!! This is wrong!" Wozniak also voiced her displeasure in French. "Une vrai joke avec la pire excuse pour "cuter" quelquun!!," she added. "Vraiment pas un fair shot! Trop de manipulations! Super nouvelle organisation!" ("A real joke with the worst excuse for cutting someone. Really not a fair shot! Too much manipulation!" The tweets were later removed. Leblanc, 22, was the 18th overall pick in 2009. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound forward played 42 games with the Canadiens in 2011-12, but struggled last season in Hamilton and was never called up to Montreal. Leblanc was among 14 players cut on Monday night. Forwards Martin Reway and Charles Hudon and goaltender Zachary Fucale were returned to their respective junior teams, while forwards Joonas Nattinen, Stephen MacAulay, Stefan Fournier, Sven Andrighetto and Erik Nystrom, goaltender Robert Mayer and defencemen Morgan Ellis, Darren Dietz, Dalton Thrower and Matt Lashoff were sent to the Bulldogs training camp. cheap jerseys from china .com) - After snapping their longest winless drought of the season, the Ottawa Senators look to breathe life into their playoff hopes on tonight as they visit the Florida Panthers. cheap nfl jerseys . No matter what happens to these two parties this much seems almost inevitable: Toronto will take Harrison Barnes in the NBA Draft. Last year, when some thought Barnes would declare after one year at North Carolina, it was because he ended the season on a serious hot streak, filled a need for Toronto on the wing and was a player the organization could get fans excited about. This year, with everyone expecting Barnes to declare, hed represent a consolation prize for a team that didnt lose enough to secure a top pick and will take damaged goods because its better than settling for a raw power forward or reaching for a point guard. Whatever the reason, it seems like these two are destined to be together. The fact is that it isnt a horrible match. Barnes is a pure scorer who can shoot, and the Raptors desperately need shooters on the wing. Hes got some size and plays defence, and he is a very sharp player, but he never dominated at the college level like people expected him to and he too often seems content to play the game at 70 per cent rather than maxing out his talents while on the court. There is also the fact that over the course of the season two other wing players, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Bradley Beal, simply made themselves better fits for Toronto than Barnes did. Kidd-Gilchrist is like Dwane Caseys dream player; a natural leader at the small forward spot that plays all-out all of the time, excels at playing defence, rebounding and driving the ball to the hoop. Beal is a shooting guard with NBA range, a relentless offensive motor and is a solid passer and playmaker. If the Raptors got one of those two guys they could make fans feel like the losing this season was worth it. With Barnes... well with Barnes theyd be thankful that they had Jonas Valanciunas coming over. They could continue to sell him as the key incoming asset and let Barnes slide into a more complimentary role behind him. Given the Raptors season, though, thats probably what they will have to settle for. One of the "problems" that the team has faced since hiring Casey as their head coach is that this team tries too darn hard for a club in search of a high draft pick. They lost major parts to their system for long stretches - from Jerryd Bayless to Andrea Bargnani to trading away Leandro Barbosa - but nothing broke this clubs will. They are on pace to finish with a better winning percentage than they had last year (.327 currently versus .268 a season ago), theyve shown a stubborn refusal to back down to good teams and have notched wins against several of their lottery-bound counterparts (Cleveland, New Jersey, Washington, Detroit, New Orleans and Golden State). If and when they finish outside of the bottom five at the end of the season theyll have no one to blame but themselves for actually caring enough to try and win almost every game that they played. Unless the lottery gods smile on Toronto in May, there is a good chance that the only player on their radar that theyll have a shot at is Barnes, because his stock seems to have fallen far enough to land in Torontos range. Sure theyll try to trade up to take one of the more attractive assets, but the price may prove too steep that high in the draft to move up even one or two spots for a shot at Kidd-Gilchrist or Beal. Its not like landing Barnes is a sickening fate, and if the Raptors do so outside of the top-five then they are actually probably getting him at about his proper value. Getting him this year, though, carries a much different perception than getting him last year would have, and perception is key as the club looks to win back the fans it sacrificed to go down the rebuilding rabbit hole after Chris Bosh bolted for Miami. Of course, things could be worse. The Raptors could wind up selecting seventh or eighth in the draft, losing out on Barnes and having to pick from guys like Perry Jones, Jared Sullinger, Jeremy Lamb or Terrence Jones. Heck, at that point the club may explore trading out of the draft altogether. That fate doesnt seem likely, though. No, Barnes and the Raptors have been on a collision course for over a year now, and were just counting down the final months until it happens. Its almost time to stop fighting it. Both parties have shifted in their respective spheres and yet both still seem aligned with one another. Its not a matter of good or bad or right or wrong, its just inevitability. Well have to wait until May 30 for the next sign of this impending union, but at this point it just seems like a formality. Barnes and the Raptors arent an ideal fit (especially from Torontos perspective), but its good enough and that will probably be all it takes to make Barnes a Raptor at the end of June. Theyre just a little too potent and Barnes is just a little too underwhelming for it to happen any other way. Cheap NFL Jerseys . JOHNS, N.L. -- The Worcester Sharks banged and crashed their way to victory on Saturday night. Worcester played a rough style of hockey for a 4-2 win over the IceCaps in American Hockey League play, rebounding from a loss in St. Johns the day before. The game featured six fights, 64 penalty minutes for the Sharks and 48 penalty minutes for the IceCaps. There were three misconducts including two ejections. "Thats their game plan, to come in and run us," said St. Johns centre Garth Murray. "I thought all of our guys stood up well. Theyve got an old school coach, with an old school mentality. Thats just how the league was ten years ago." James Livingston, Ryan Del Monte, Mike Connolly and Brandon Mashinter scored for the Sharks (21-14-9). Paul Postma and Carl Klingberg had goals for the IceCaps (28-12-6). IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge felt the officiating let the game get out of control. "Im not one to ever put fault away from our team if they dont execute the way they should, but both those games, especially tonight, was a game that was out of control because the ref let the game get played at an era of taking the game back to forty years ago," McCambridge said. "Thats not the way todays game is played." IceCaps captain Jason Jafffray was frustrated with the game, and the missed calls.dddddddddddd "It was one of the most frustrating games to be a part of. In ten years pro, Ive never been a part of something like that," Jaffray said. "How you get two-handed in the face and it goes unnoticed baffles me." The IceCaps began to take justice into their own hands. Murray ended up answering the bell three times in the game, which was a first according to the veteran. "I had three shifts and three fights. In ten years pro Ive never had three in a game, so its just one of those nights." Murray was thrown out of the game at 9:59 in the second period, following his third fight, but was still given the Mary Browns Hardest Working Player of the Game nod. McCambridge commended Murray for the way he stood up for the team. "Murray is a guy that battles hard for his teammates. Hes an ultimate leader, a guy that comes to work everyday and sticks up for his team." Jaffray felt the team could beat the Sharks by keeping their gloves on. "If you kept your gloves on all game you could probably run that team out of the building." Sharks Harri Sateri made 27 saves, while Aebischer made 19. The IceCaps were 0-for-6 on the power play, while Worcester was 1-for-3. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Paul George and the Pacers were down and just about out, seconds away from consecutive losses. Once a late foul call gave him a chance to tie it, he wasnt letting Indiana lose it in overtime. "I wanted to attack," he said. George made three throws to tie it with 5.2 seconds left in regulation, then scored nine of his season-high 35 points in the extra period as Indiana pulled out a 103-96 victory Wednesday night over the New York Knicks, who dropped their sixth straight at home. New York scored the first 13 points, but this settled into a playoff-type game between teams that met in the post-season last May. And it again went to the Pacers, who bounced back from their first loss after a franchise-record 9-0 start. "Heck of a win for our guys," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "A grind-it-out kind of game. Thats sometimes when were at our best. The offence wasnt really flowing but our defence really buckled down." George Hill added 23 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who beat the Knicks in six games in last seasons Eastern Conference semifinals. Just as in the clincher of that series, Roy Hibbert had a pivotal block on Carmelo Anthonys drive to the basket. Anthony had 30 points and a season-high 18 rebounds for the Knicks, who looked completely deflated after they couldnt score following the free throws George made when Iman Shumpert was called for fouling him. George then put away the Knicks in overtime, keeping them winless at home since beating Milwaukee on Oct. 30 in their season opener. "I thought we had the game won," Anthony said. "And in overtime, I dont know, they just walked away with it." J.R. Smith had 21 points, and Beno Udrih scored a season-high 19 for the Knicks, including a go-ahead shot with 1:21 left in regulation when he appeared to just throw it at the rim when Anthony couldnt get free. The Knicks protected the lead through a couple of missed 3-pointers by Hill, and Anthony made two free throws for an 89-86 lead with 9.2 seconds left. Shumpert was then called for the foul on George, with replays showing what appeared to be perhaps just a slight touch to Georges arm. The All-Star sank the free throws, and Anthony missed on the other end, and Smith was off on a tip attempt. "It dont really matter what I think or what happened," Shumpert said. "They called the foul." The stunned Knicks walked back to the bench as if they had just lost -- and pretty soon, they had. George followed Hibberts block with a 3-pointer, and answered Anthonys basket with four straight points to put the Pacers in control. Last seasons winner of the Most Improved Player award said he would have deferred in similar situations in the past. "I would have looked to have someone else to be in that position or that role," George said. "This year, this time around I want to be more aggressive." The Knicks were again without injured starters Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton. Amare Stoudemire also didnt play on the second night of the back-to-back. They now go on a four-game road trip, perhaps what they need with their inability to win on their home floor. George was two shy of his career high, bouncing back well from a season-low 12 points on 3-for-14 shooting in a 110-94 loss at Chicago that ended Indianas perfect start. The Knicks jumped to a 13-0 lead while Indiana missed its first seven shots. The Pacers were only 5 for 20 in the first quarter, but one of the makes was Hibberts ugly, banked 3-pointer that beat the buzzer and cut it to 19-14. New York was ahead 42-37 at the half and never trailed by more than four until overtime. The teams were evenly matched last season, only minutes from heading to a Game 7 until Hibberts sensational, momentum-shifting block on Anthonys dunk attempt late in Game 6. Indiana went on to force Miami to seven games in the East finals and is intent on doing better this season. As for the Knicks, they are 3-8, unable to match their strong start last season, certainly not able to keep pace with Indianas blistering start. This was a much better performance from the Knicks, who had been critical of their own effort and were coming off a loss in Detroit a night earlier, but not good enough. Write in to answer Daves weekly question and watch the NHL on TSN tonight to see if he reads your response. Earlier this month, Major League Baseball turned a few heads with the announcement that it was expanding its playoff format to 10 teams this season by adding a wild-card club to each league. A grand total of ten teams (out of 30) will make the postseason, relatively increasing the chances of a club winning the World Series. So should the National Hockey League add a couple of more teams to the playoff picture as well? Back in the 1990-91 season, only five of the NHLs 21 teams missed the playoffs. And with the addition of nine more teams over the next decade, just over 50 percent of the clubs end up playing hockey in the spring. So heres Daves question to you was: "Major League Baseball has added two playoff teams. Should the NHL increase its playoff membership?" And here are the answers that Dave liked best: Tony says: "Sure. More late-season interest in more cities, more money generated by more teams, more playoff opportunities for more players…everybody wins." Jonathan writes: "Ill make the same case for hockey that I made for baseball. Whatever helps Toronto get into the playoffs." (we heard the same sentiment from Winnipeg and Edmonton, and.....) We heard this from Harold, a fan in Calgary: &quoot; Now that the Flames are in eighth place, I can say we dont need it, but check with me next year.dddddddddddd." Steve offers this logic: "if and when they add expansion teams, they can add playoff teams, but not before." Murray states flatly: "No. The playoffs are long enough as it is.....any longer and Ill be divorced." (You mean, go back to the 90s when you made the playoffs unless you were Hartford?) Larry says: "If there were more playoff teams, there would be more buyers and fewer sellers at the trade deadline." (ah yes, its all about the trade deadline). And Daves Reply to All: For as long as the NHL has allowed 16 teams into the playoffs, it has heard the criticism that post-season participation is too easy. But all it takes for someone to suggest it should be made easier is a team that misses the playoffs by a point or two and a general manager who tries to sell the idea that 90-plus points should be rewarded somehow. Heres an idea, a new system that has 20 playoff teams. The bottom eight in a short first round, the winners joining the other 12 in the second round. That number is hard to stomach, as its only 10 less than the nutty idea of Islanders owner Charles Wong that all 30 teams should make the playoffs. Baseball can sell two more playoff teams because two more only makes 10. The best you can say for 16 is that hockey fans are accustomed to it--the number is not going down and it shouldnt go up. Winnipeg Jets 5 Calgary Flames 3 (Jets 37-35-10, Road 19-18-4) – It was a short-staffed Jets team that was playing on back to back nights that found a way to win the game and end the season with back to back wins. It was the first time the Jets have won back to back games since wins over Phoenix and Nashville coming out of the Olympic break. Starting the game without 10 regulars, the Jets lost Jacob Trouba in the first period and Jim Slater in the second period due to injury. Trouba was hit in the throat by a deflected puck, while Slater suffered a broken finger. Michael Hutchinson, in just his third NHL game, was again very good, especially in the third stopping all 18 shots he faced. The Jets took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Michael Frolik (15th) from Trouba and Mark Stuart at 7:23, and Evander Kane (19th) from Bryan Little and Adam Pardy. Kane finishes the season with goals in back to back games, the goal being his 200th NHL point. Shots in the first were 14-8 for the Jets. The Flames got on the board early in the second on a goal from Jiri Hudler, but Carl Klingberg, with his first NHL goal, restored the two goal lead for Winnipeg. Patrice Cormier and Zach Redmond drew assists on the Klingberg goal. The Jets then ran into penalty trouble and for the first time in 10 occasions this season gave up a goal while down two men as Sean Monahan scored his 22nd of the season, and 24 seconds later the game was tied on Chris Russells seventh of the year, also a power play goal. Shots in the second were 12-5 for Calgary as the tough skate Wednesday and playing the night before seemed to be catching up to the Jets. The Flames needed something out of this game to finish above .500 at home, and with aggressive fore-checking took advantage of a tired Jets team. But Hutchinson shut the door, his best save off Kenny Agostino, a glove save on a one on one situation. Paul Postma with his first of the season put the Jets back in front. Cormier, with his first career two-point game, and Anthony Peluso drew assists. The Flames pulled goaltender Karri Ramo while on a late power play, but Blake Wheeler, with his 28th, into an empty net ended it. Shots in the third were 18-8 Calgary and 38-27 for the Flames over the game. Stuart led the Jets in ice time at 24:25, Slater won 11 of 12 face-offs before leaving the game and Cormier won nine of 12. Hutchison stopped 83 of 88 shots in his three games for a save percentage of .943 and record of 2-1. Coach Paul Maurice was very proud of his squad. “With three minutes left in the second, we had nothing left. Then we found a way to win. Our goalie made some great saves. Losing Trouba and Slater did not help.” And on his team, “they played for each other. They care about each other. There is a lot of the right kind of people in the room. What excites me about this team is the room.” Exit meetings with players will be held this weekend and into next week, with all the call-ups on their way back to St. Johns, while others will be asked to compete for their country at the World Championship in Belarus in May. Markstrom made 30 saves and Colby Robak, Drew Shor, Dylan Olsen and Vincent Trocheck scored for the Rampage (22-21-. Patrick Holland had the lone goal for the Bulldogs (22-23-5), who have lost seven of their last nine games. Robert Mayer stopped 26 shots in the losing effort. San Antonio opened on a power play as Robak took a pass from Greg Rallo and released a high, heavy shot over Mayers shoulder at 9:16 of the first period. The Bulldogs used the forecheck to score the tying goal at 18:48 as Martin St. Pierre flicked a centring pass in front that clipped the skate of Holland as he skated through the slot and slid past Markstrom. But it took less tthan a minute for the Rampage to break the deadlock in the second period on an odd-man rush with Rallo shooting and Shore swatting in the rebound just 23 seconds into the period.dddddddddddd Less than two minutes later, San Antonio doubled its lead when Olsens wrist shot caught Mayer by surprise and beat him through the five hole at 2:01. Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre called a time out to settle his group. Hamilton had a chance to cut the deficit 10 minutes into the period when Christian Thomas stole the puck in the low slot and snapped a wrist shot over Markstroms crossbar. Trocheck put the game away when he scored into the empty net at 18:24. Hamiltons power play was shut out for the second straight game, as the Bulldogs went 0-4 with the man advantage. DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks cant seem to turn comfortable leads into easy wins, even with their playoff fate on the line against teams going nowhere. They avoided what would have been a damaging letdown against Sacramento on Saturday night. Nowitzki scored 19 points, including eight in the fourth quarter when the Mavericks wiped out a five-point deficit after leading by 17 in the first half and held on to beat the Kings 103-100. "Its unfortunate its been part of our DNA, and I just feel like were going to snap out of it," said coach Rick Carlisle, whose team has lost six games after leading by at least 16 points this season. "And I know we have to. So Im a very positive thinker on this." The Mavericks beat Sacramento at home for the 20th straight time in the regular season, the longest against any opponent in franchise history. Dallas (44-30) is in a virtual tie with Memphis (43-29) for eighth place in the Western Conference, a half-game behind Phoenix. The Mavericks have eight games left and finish the regular season at the Grizzlies. Rudy Gay scored 30 for the Kings. Monta Ellis had 17 points and six assists and Sam Dalembert added 15 as Dallas avoided a second loss to a West also-ran on a franchise-record eight-game homestand that ends Tuesday night against Golden State, the fourth likely playoff-bound opponent in five games. "Weve got to push it," Dalembert said. "We have to go out every night and fight, try to get anything we can get and see if we can get that second chance." The Kings were up 89-84 after a jumper from Jason Thompson when Jose Calderon started a 10-0 run with a 3-pointer and Nowitzki hit a pair of free throws for a tie. Shawn Marion made two more free throws to put Dallas back in front, then knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner for a 94-89 lead. Marion finished with 14 points. Sacramento had a chance to tie in the final seconds after Ellis missed two free throws, but Travis Outlaws 3-pointer was short just before the buzzer. "We played a lot harder, a lot more physical, in the second half," Sacramento coach Michael Malone said. "But we dont want to be having to get down by 17 to do it." Gay, who had 35 points in another close loss at the Mavericks in January, led Sacramentos push for its first regular-season win in Dallas since Feb. 27, 2003. The Kings won a playoff game in Dallas in 2004 when they eliminated the Mavericks in five games in the first round. Gay tipped in his own miss for the Kings first lead at 81-80 with 7:26 remaining in the game and muscled in a bucket after Ray McCallum missed a layup. Gay also had seven rebounds. With Kings point guard Isaiah Thomas missing his third straight game with a right thigh contusion, McCallum became the first NBA player this season to go the full 48 minutes. He has played six straight quarters over two nights after going the entire second half of a loss at Oklahoma City. McCallum, who had 16 points and eight assists, was briefly the only guard available when fellow rookie Ben McLemore left with what he said was a mild knee injury in the third quarter before returning in the fourth. "I felt fine the whole entire game," said McCallum, who has averaged 45 minutes per game in his three career starts with Thomas sidelined. "I knew with Isaiah being out, I would play more. I took a challenge to keep the team in the game and run the offence." McLemore had ice on both knees and his left shoulder after the game, but said he was fine. Nowitzki led the Mavericks with seven rebounds and tied Calderon for the team lead with seven assists. Reggie Evans had a season-high 18 rebounds for Sacramento, and DeMarcus Cousins finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists despite sitting most of the third quarter with four fouls. Nashville Predators 3 Winnipeg Jets 2 OT – After a game like this, the question is often about the extra point. Was it a point gained, or a point lost? For Jets head coach Claude Noel and a number of players the thought was it was a point lost because after a very good start to the game, they could not maintain it for a full 60 minutes. For other players, being down 2-1 and tying the game with three minutes left against a very good defensive team was a point gained. The Jets controlled the early going, out-shooting the Predators 7-1, but a Shea Weber power play goal at 15:53 opened the scoring. The Jets have only scored the games opening goal twice this season. Anthony Peluso scored the only goal of the second period to tie the game at one. The goal came on a wrap around and was his first NHL goal. In the third, Patric Hornqvist put home a rebound from the high slot to regain the lead for the Predators, until Blake Wheeler tied the game at 16:59. For Wheeler it was his third of the year and he has now scored in back to back games. The Jets got a late power play but did not register a shot on goal. The Jets have now gone six games without a power play goal. Last season they started with nine power play goals in the first nine games, before going through stretches of no PP goals in eight games and one in 16 games. Craig Smith with his second goal of the year ended the contest at 4:43 of overtime in favour of the Predators. It looked like the Jets were going to get one last rush until the puck bounced over the stick of defenceman Dustin Byfuglien setting the stage for David Legwands pass to Smith. Jets are now 1-1-1 on the road, with three more games on this Central Division trip that continues in Dallas, Saturday (TSN 1290). Jets are 4-5-2 overall on the season. Byfuglien played over 30 minutes in the game and had six shots on goal in a losing cause. The Predators are a very good face-off team, winning 66% of the draws. Matt Cullen led the way winning 15 of 16 from the faceoff circle. The Jets outshot the Predators 36-33, they also missed the net with another 12 attempts and had 24 blocked, six by Shea Weber. "We had a solid first ten minutes," commented Noel post-game. "Text book. But could not sustain it. Its good we came back and got a point but the test is still to be consistent for 60 minutes. We play in spurts. First five minutes of the third we struggled. Bad puck management, no support. We need to take the next step, were 11 games in. But we did some good things. Battled physically, got traffic to the net. We had a great north/south game going then wanted to play cute." Defenceman Mark Stuart was back in the lineup after missing two games due to injury and forward Eric Tangradi played after being a healthy scratch the last three games. Jets were still minus Jim Slater, Jacob Trouba and Chris Thorburn due to injury, while Adam Pardy and Patrice Cormier were healthy scratches. James Wright slipped in the middle on the fourth line and played well. Goaltender Carter Hutton has now stopped 72 of 75 shots in his two games against the Jets. Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone says his series and NASCAR wont be competing for the same motorsport fans in Texas when they hold races 190 miles apart in November. Ecclestone dismissed on Wednesday any clash between the series, after the top executive at Texas Motor Speedway called F1 "arrogant" for scheduling the United States Grand Prix in Austin on the same weekend that his track hosts NASCAR in Fort Worth. "I absolutely think its foolish," said Eddie Gossage, the track president and general manager. "Its a shot fired by Formula One at NASCAR. I cant say I was surprised because Bernie Ecclestone does a lot of foolish things. The thing he unfortunately doesnt recognize is there is an 800-pound gorilla when it comes to major American motorsports. The 800-pound gorilla is NASCAR." Texas Motor Speedway will host NASCARs Texas 500 on Nov. 2, the same day F1 will hold its only race in the U.S. this year. Fort Worth is about a 3-hour drive from Austin. While Gossage thought a stronger stance by the management at Circuit of the Americas would have prevented the scheduling issue, Ecclestone believed it was a non-issue. "Ive also spoken to the people that run the race at COTA and their position is that they believe the NASCAR crowd is a different crowd to Formula One, different people, different customers," Ecclestone said. "At the end of the day, they run a domestic series in America -- we run a world championship." F1 requires considerable logistical planning by the teams, he said. "Weve a small problem they (NASCAR) dont have -- we have six jumbo jets to move around all our equipment, and we have to find the most sensible way to use them to do that," Ecclestone said. "We have to be efficient and bear in mind we may also encounter problems at an airport. "There are issues that can occur, but (Gossage) and other people do not realize these things. The race prior to the one in the U.S. is in Russia, in Sochi. Weve never been before, and we have to get out of there and into Austin. That is probably a lot easier than trying to get into Brazil, and then we have to get out of there (Sao Paulo) to go to Abu Dhabi." Gossage said F1 could have found another weekend to race in the U.S. "Its just not smart," he said. "Theres 52 weeks in the year. But that was the only weekend that Formula One could make it work in Austin, Texas. Give me a break." Wholesale MLB Jerseys . 1. The teams all-time leading scorer, DeRo has won everything there is to win in MLS. But the former league MVP is 35 and made a whopping US$654,300 last season. Plus he left Toronto on bad terms in 2011. In the end, the conclusion was the attacking midfielder would be a welcome asset if he were to agree to a new role and reduced contract number. It seems everyone is on the same page, with Toronto choosing the former D.C. United star in Stage 2 of the MLS re-entry draft Wednesday. The move came after some careful discussion. "Tim B (general manager Tim Bezbatchenko) and I got on the phone with Dwayne a couple of weeks ago and had a good hour conversation about what it is he wants to do, what happened here (in his first stint) and where were trying to go," Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment boss Tim Leiweke told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. "And we aired it all out." The next step was for De Rosario to speak to manager Ryan Nelsen, to hear his vision for the future. While Toronto had yet to get his signature on a contract as of the re-entry draft announcement, Leiweke talked as if a deal was all but done. "I think (Bezbatchenko) and Dwayne and Dwaynes agent did a very good job of trying to find a fair deal," he said. "And to Dwaynes credit, he understands that if this is about winning, we had to have enough room left within our (salary) cap to add a couple more pieces here. "And I believe they have found a deal that will do that ... A lot of credit to Dwayne. He probably could get paid more elsewhere. But he chose to come to Toronto because he likes what were building here. And boy is that a change. "For a guy that left because he didnt like what we were doing, to come back because he likes what were doing, I think says an awful lot about Tim B and Nellie and the job theyve done this off-season." Teams have seven days to make a "bona fide offer" to players selected in Stage 2 of the re-entry draft. If an agreement cant be reached, the club holds the right of first refusal for that player in MLS. De Rosario became available when D.C. United opted not to pick up his option at the end of the season. Playing for the leagues worst team in 2013, the Canadian had three goals and two assists in 24 games. De Rosario currently ranks sixth on the all-time MLS scoring list with 103 goals. Contrast that with the current TFC roster, which has a combined 37 career MLS goals. Money has played a key role in De Rosarios history with Toronto. In his first go-round at Toronto, he made US$443,750 in 2010 while fellow Canadian Julian de Guzman made $1.7 million as a designated player. It seemed an inequity to everyone but Toronto FC, with player and club disagreeing whether there had been an agreement to rewrite his contract. De Rosario shone a spotlight on his money concerns when he celebrated a goal in a 3-2 home loss to the San Jose Earthquakes in September 2010 by pretending to sign a cheque. He later apologized for the move, which Tom Anselmi, then MLSE executive vice-president and COO, called disappointing and unacceptable. Two games into the 2011 season, he was traded to the New York Red Bulls. The De Rosario selection Wednesday was the latest in a flurry of TFC moves. Brazilian striker Gilberto is on board as a designated player with England and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe expected to announce his allegiance in the January transfer window. Toronto has also acquired MLS experience in the form of Brazilian midfielder Jackson and defender Justin Morrow while picking up draft picks in trading away the rights of goalkeeper Stefan Frei and midfielder Bobby Convey. Toronto is not looking for DeRo to be the face of the team. That job will fall to its final designated player signing -- read Defoe, if all goes well. De Rosarios role on the field will likely be that as a third striker, while playing a veterans role in the locker-room. Signing DeRo would be seen by many local fans as righting a past wrong. It also helps signal that Toronto is a worthy destination. As Nelsen said at the Gilberto signing, players look to the future rather than the post. Which is good considering Torontos MLS record since De Rosario was traded away is 16-50-34. Much has changed since then. Only two playerss (Ashtone Morgan and Doneil Henry) remain from the matchday 18 of De Rosarios last game in a Toronto shirt -- a 2-0 win over Portland on March 26, 2011.dddddddddddd De Rosario has also matured. For years, he looked to protect his own brand. A playmaker with a scoring touch, De Rosario is a game changer who can carve open a defence for a teammate, or score himself with his feet or head, from inside or outside the penalty box Because of his passport and other vagaries, he never made it in Europe. While he became a star in MLS, for a long time he believed he was not getting the compensation or recognition he deserved. These days, he seems more comfortable in his own skin. During a Canadian national team camp last January in Arizona, De Rosario went out of his way to help a roster of young teammates. When fullback Andres Fresenga was writhing in agony after being scythed down in a tackle, De Rosario was there to see if he was OK -- even though he was on the opposing team. After the session, he made a point of connecting with every single teammate. He can do the same in Toronto, which is home to young Canadian internationals in Kyle Bekker, Henry, Morgan and Jonathan Osorio. "Hes not going to necessarily be THE guy," Leiweke said of De Rosario. "But hes a team player and he wants to win and he made that clear to us. I was very impressed by that. "He doesnt talk about going out in style because I dont think he thinks like that. But I think he wants to win. And he knows were really committed to it here. "And were ferocious at chasing guys now that can help is get this team into the playoffs." The team does not expect De Rosario to become a wall flower "Look I dont mind the fact that were building a team with personality," said Leiweke. "I like that. I like teams with personality. I also understand that we take a bit of risk here as to what if it doesnt work out. "But I believe in the conversation we had with him, there will be enough understanding and communication with him where he understands his role and accepts it. And thrives to be the guy to teach young kids how to win." Leiweke also recognized De Rosario gives the team "more of a home-town Canadian feel thats important to us." The 13-year MLS veteran has played 324 regular-season and 24 playoff games in MLS. He started his career with San Jose and Houston, winning four league titles. Toronto first acquired De Rosario in 2009 from Houston in exchange for defender Julius James and allocation money. He went on to score 27 goals in 57 games for Toronto, a club record, before being traded early in the 2011 season by then head coach Aron Winter and director of player development Paul Mariner. "I am sorry to the wonderful and passionate fans at TFC about my departure to NY Red Bulls," De Rosario said at the time in a post on his Facebook fan page. "Just wanted to say it has truly been an honour coming back home & playing for my home crowd." De Rosario, who had scored 15 of Torontos 33 goals in 2010, was shipped out in exchange for midfielder Tony Tchani, defender-midfielder Danleigh Borman and a first-round pick. He finished 2011 with D.C. United, winning the Golden Boot as the leagues top scorer and MVP honours. De Rosario became the first player in MLS history to score for three different teams in one year. He also was the first MVP in North American pro sports history to play for three different teams in one season, according to MLS. A finalist for MVP in 2005 and 2006, he has been chosen to the leagues Best XI six times. De Rosario has captured MLS Goal of the Year honours twice, in 2004 and 2005. He won the MLS Cup in 2001 and 2003 with San Jose and 2006 and 2007 with Houston, earning MLS Cup MVP honours in 2001 and 2007. He is a member of the select club of 100-goal snipers in MLS. He even set a record for fastest league hat trick (goals in the 22nd, 27th and 31st minutes against Real Salt Lake in 2012). He turned pro at age 18 in 1997, signing with the Toronto Lynx of the A-League. D.C. United opened Wednesdays draft by taking Red Bulls forward Fabian Espindola before choosing Canadian international defender Nana Attakora. The Vancouver Whitecaps selected midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy (San Jose). Former Whitecaps forward Corey Hertzog went to Seattle. ' ' '

TORONTO -- And then there was one. Brazil and Paraguay have qualified for FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2014, leaving just one spot remaining in the 16-country womens soccer tournament. The South American squads booked their tickets this week at the CONMEBOL qualifying campaign in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, by taking an unassailable lead in the standings ahead of Fridays final. While Brazil has played in the six previous world U-20 tournaments, this summer will mark Paraguays debut. The last team remaining will come from Oceania, likely New Zealand. The Kiwis have won every OFC U-20 Womens Championship since Australia left for the Asian Football Confederation. The Oceania tournament, featuring New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Vanuatu, is set for Feb. 18-22 in Auckland. The U-20 World Cup tournament, seen as a test run for the FIFA Womens World Cup in Canada in 2015, is slated for Aug. 5-24 in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. Canada, as host, qualifies automatically. Nigeria won the African qualifying tournament, outscoring its opposition 31-0 en route to six straight wins. Ghana also advanced but had to rally to defeat Equatorial Guinea 4-3 in a penalty shootout after the two-legged tie ended at 1-1. The high-powered Americans booked their ticket after dominating the CONCACAF Womens Under-20 Championship in the Cayman Islands. Mexico and Costa Rica also advanced The U.S., which won the world under-20 title in 2002, 2008 and 2012, defeated Mexico 3-0 in the final as the Americans won all five of their matches, outscoring the opposition 29-0. Europe will be represented in Canada by England, Finland, France and two-time world under-20 champion Germany. Qualifying took place last August at the UEFA European Womens U-19 Championship in Wales where France defeated England 2-0 in the final. South Korea, North Korea and China will represent Asia by virtue of the AFC U-19 Womens Championship in October. The FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup is scheduled to open Aug. 5 at BMO Field in Toronto. Twenty-nine matches later, the third-place game and final will take place Aug. 24 at Montreals Olympic Stadium. In 2012, Canada failed to make it to the quarter-finals after going 1-2-0 in round-robin play in Japan. OTTAWA -- Given the tumultuous off season in Ottawa, forward Clarke MacArthur has flown under the radar since signing with the Senators as a free agent this past summer. MacArthur, who spent the last three seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, is expected to add some veteran experience and scoring to a second line that finds itself without the skill and leadership of Daniel Alfredsson. Alfredsson left the Senators to sign with the Detroit Red Wings, leaving a gaping hole to be filled. MacArthur, who signed a two-year deal worth US$6.5 million, says has no intention of attempting to replace Alfredsson. He is just hoping to find some chemistry with Kyle Turris and a yet to be determined right-winger and add some offence. The Senators said they believed MacArthur had the potential to score 15 to 20 goals for them when they made the signing. While hes not one to make bold predictions, MacArthur admitted he would love nothing more than to find the offensive touch that allowed him to post back-to-back 20 goal seasons. "The first two years in Toronto I had 20 goals and I want to get back to that kind of hockey," he said. "Getting an opportunity to play with (Turris) is great. He seems like a real solid two-way player and Im excited to have an opportunity there." A former third-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres, MacArthur has 93 goals and 213 points in 403 NHL games. Over the course of the past three NHL seasons MacArthur has actually posted better numbers than Alfredsson, but it would be unfair to make any comparisons to the beloved former Ottawa captain. MacArthur just wants to be the best he can be. Strangely enough, MacArthur now occupies Alfredssons stall in the locker-room. "Im not a guy that youre going to see dominate night in and night out," said MacArthur. "I like to get things done and be good defensively and I feel I can make offensive plays, but consistency is something everyone fights and this year I want to strive to be better with that." MacArthur got off to a strong start picking up a goal in the Senators 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames in his first pre-season game with Ottawa. Turris and MacArthur have been working hard at developing chemistry and so far feel like they compliment one another. "The majority of it is just logging time together on the ice and getting a feel for each other," said Turris. "Were definitely starting to build that chemistry. Hes a great player. Hes got good speed, got a good shot and the best part is he reads the ice, he sees everything develop and thats something I love working with." With most of the pressure expected to be on Ottawas top line, Turris says he and MacArthur have an opportunity to add some secondary scoring. "Theyre going to have lots of pressure on them and they obviously will be one of the best in the league," said Turris. "We want to ease a little bit off of them. We want to be scoring and be contributing as well." Senators coach Paul MacLean has been happy with what hes seen so far and MacArthur is likely to be given every opportunity to succeed. "Right now were going to take our time with any projections as to what hes going to be," said MacLean. "Hes as advertised, hes a 400-game player, and to me hes been very good, very professional." Choosing Ottawa was an interesting choice for MacArthur considering the rivalry between the Senators and the Leafs. Strangely enough MacArthur agreed to the deal while in Prince Edward Island to attend Leafs captain Dion Phaneufs wedding. It goes without saying that his former teammates had some fun at MacArthurs expense. The 28-year-old will get his first chance to play against some of his former teammates Tuesday night in an exhibition game in Toronto, but the real test will come Oct. 5 when they play the first of four regular season games against one another. "Its one of those things where I have a lot of friends on that side, but when it comes to playing the game both sides have to play hard against each other," said MacArthur. "Thats just the nature of the game. Its going to be a lot of fun to go up against those guys." Notes: G Robin Lehner will get the start in Toronto Tuesday. CHICAGO -- Down 0-2 in the count in the 11th inning, Leury Garcia did something surprising: He bunted for a base hit. What happened next was even more unexpected. Garcia scored on a balk and a pair of wild pitches by Samuel Deduno, giving Chicago White Sox a 7-6 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Before a crowd of just 10,625, Chicago came back from a 6-4 deficit in the ninth on Garcias run-scoring single off Glen Perkins and Adam Eatons RBI grounder. Garcia said he made the call on his own to try and bunt even though the count was against him. "You have to work on it," Garcia said. "Ive been working and that was the perfect time to do it, and I do it. It was perfect." The speedy Garcia bunted up the third-base line on an 0-2 pitch leading off the 11th and took second when, with Eaton at the plate, Deduno (0-1) never came to a set position and balked. Eaton struck out, Deduno bounced an outside pitch that hit off Suzukis glove as Garcia advanced, and Marcus Semien took a called third strike. After an intentional walk to Jose Abreu, Deduno threw way outside on a 3-2 to pitch to Adam Dunn, and the ball hit off Suzukis glove as Garcia came home. Ronald Belisario (1-0) pitched 1 1-3 hitless innings for the win. "You get momentum from that," manager Robin Ventura said. "There are ways to hit a home run and win a game, and theres another way to manufacture it and come back. By coming back and then you win later, I dont know how many times we did that last year, not many. You end up doing something that feels new and feels fresh for these guys." Dunns solo homer in the eighth off Jared Burton pulled the White Sox to 6-5, but Kurt Suzuki hit a run-scoring double in the ninth against Daniel Wenn for a two-run cushion. The game was delayed during the top of the seventh after Eaton appeared to catch Oswaldo Arcias fly ball to centre and then dropped it when he went to grrab the ball from his glove.dddddddddddd The play was ruled a catch, but the Twins challenged the call and it was overturned by a replay umpire in New York. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the long delay forced him to pull starting pitcher Kevin Correia earlier than he wanted. "We were definitely going to challenge," Gardenhire said. "The length of it couldnt be helped from what I heard but it took too long for everybody involved." White Sox left-hander Felipe Paulino, back from elbow and shoulder surgery, made his first start since June 6, 2012, against Minnesota as a member of the Kansas City Royals. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Paulino laboured at times and threw 109 pitches. Twins starter Kevin Correia gave up three runs -- two earned -- and five hits in six innings with five strikeouts and a walked. It wasnt really a situation where I couldnt go back out there," Correia said. "It was 35 degrees, and I dont know how long that inning was taking already. But it pretty much came down to that review. Without that review, I definitely think Im going back out there." Trevor Plouffe had three RBIs for the Twins, who took a 5-3 lead with a three-run seventh. Alexei Ramirez had a two-run double for the Whiter Sox. NOTES: Twins reliever Casey Fien was diagnosed with a bruised left ankle when hit on a ball up the middle off Eatons bat ending the seventh inning. ... TORONTO -- Kyle Lowry sat at his locker nursing a headache in the moments after the Toronto Raptors loss on Sunday, the product of a misplaced knee. The Raptors were thoroughly dismantled by a speedy Phoenix Suns team in a 121-113 loss, but Lowry and coach Dwane Casey insisted there would be no lingering pain after a rare defeat at home. "Its not a systemic problem, its one game, we knew we werent going to go undefeated the rest of the way," Casey said. "That team right there, theyre fighting for their playoff lives like we are, and theyre a quality team in the west. "Its not like its the end of the world." Lowry scored 19 of his 28 points in the third quarter against the run-and-gun Suns, but his standout effort wasnt enough as the Raptors (37-2 lost at the Air Canada Centre for just the fifth time in the last 16 games. There were some scary moments with about a minute-and-a-half to go when Lowry went down in a scramble for a loose ball, and was ploughed in the head by first one of PJ Tuckers knees and then the other. "Ive got a headache. . . These (TV camera) lights are killing me right now," Lowry said, shrugging off any suggestion of a concussion. "PJs not a dirty guy, Ive known him for a while. He even apologized after the game. . . . Hes a strong dude, so it hurt." Terrence Ross finished with 22 points while Amir Johnson had 20, DeMar DeRozan finished with 17, and Jonas Valanciunas chipped in with 15. Gerald Green scored 13 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter to top the Suns (38-27), while Goran Dragic added 19, and Markieff Morris had 16 point and grabbed 14 rebounds. The Raptors had been red-hot the past several weeks, positioning themselves for their first playoff appearance in six seasons. Theyd gone an Eastern Conference-best 11-3 since Feb. 10 heading into Sundays game and sat first place in the Atlantic Division. But the hungry Suns also have the playoffs in their sights. They went into Sunday trailing Memphis by a game-and-a-half for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. "Thats a helluva team right there," DeRozan said. "(We can) just learn from it. We battled, a lot of stuff didnt go our way. . . It was just a tough night overall. The Suns outran the Raptors all afternoon, and led by as much as 14 points before taking a 96-90 advantage into the fourth in front of a crowd of 18,717 energetic fans at the Air Canada Centre. The visitors pulled ahead by 15 a couple of times in the final 12 minutes before a basket and free throw by Lowry made it a seven-point deficit with 4:08 to play. But on the Suns next trip down the floor, Morris grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to put the game virtually out of reach. "Theyre up and down," Lowry said. "They got out. . . 121 (points), thats their type of game. We dont want to have a type of game like that, we want to hold teams under 100, under 90 preferably." Rebounding proved problematic for the Raptors all afternoon, with Suns owning a whopping 45-26 advantage on the boards. "Again, no time to panic," Casey said. "I dont think were going to see that type of speed and quickness -- at least I hope not -- the rest of the way." The Raptors frustration showed at times. Casey was slapped with a technical for arguing a call, then DeRozan collected a tech when he kicked the ball in anger. "It was just tough when youre going out there playing hard and sometimes you dont get a call that youre fighting or dying for and that we may need at a critical time," DeRozan said. Both teams shot well, the Suns going 50.7 per cent from the field to Torontos 49.4. There was plenty of energy from both teams in a first-quarter shootout. The Raptors and Suns combined for 10-for-14 from three-point range. The Raptors led by as much as nine, but Marcus Morris drained two consecutive threes to put the Suns up 37-35 going into the second. "The guys seemed really focused tonight," said Suns head coach Jeff Hornacek. "They came out right from the start, they had the energy. Maybe it was the one oclock game that were not used to playing; they thought it was a great opportunity. I thought were on ESPN or something." The Raptors went 0-for-8 to open the second quarter until a John Salmons pull-up jumper more than five minutes in. The Raptors ended the quarter with a 10-2 run and when Ross drained a three, and pumped one fist in the air, it pulled Toronto to within two points. The Suns led 61-59 at halftime. The Raptors fell behind by 14 points with just under six minutes to play in the third, when Lowry almost single-handedly got them back in the game. He scored 10 points in the final 3:38 of the quarter and the Raptors went into the fourth trailing 96-90. NOTES: Raptors forward Patrick Patterson missed his fifth game with an elbow injury. Casey said he will be evaluated again Monday. . . AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Samuel Dalembert had more offensive rebounds than Andre Drummond, Greg Monroe and Josh Smith combined. That was probably the most telling stat from Saturdays game, which Dalemberts Dallas Mavericks won 113-102 over a Detroit team hurt throughout the night by Drummonds foul trouble. Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points and Vince Carter added 18 for Dallas. "If youre able to get them in foul trouble early, they kind of slow things down a little bit and become less aggressive," Dalembert said. "We knew what we were getting into, and we were ready for the fight." Dallas had surprising success on the boards against Detroits imposing front line. The Mavericks finished with 16 offensive rebounds. The Pistons, who came in as the NBAs top team in that department, had only nine. Drummond finished with only eight points and three rebounds in just under 20 minutes of action. "When you get in foul trouble, it changes your aggression, but it also keeps you from ever getting in the flow of the game," Detroit interim coach John Loyer said. "Andre is a guy who is normally always into the flow, but he wasnt able to do that tonight, whether because of the fouls or something else. I know hell be in the gym tomorrow making sure it doesnt happen again." Smith kept the Pistons in the game for a while and finished with 32 points, his most since signing with Detroit last off-season. Monta Ellis had 12 points and 13 assists for the Mavericks. Dallas leads ninth-place Memphis by two games in the Western Conference playoff race. The Pistons, meanwhile, fell 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the East. Dallas led by 13 in the third quarter, and after the Pistons closed within four in the fourth, Nowitzki connected from beyond the arc to give the Mavericks a 96-89 lead. Dallas was able to keep Detroit at arms length after that. "We did a pretty good job of not letting thhem get too much momentum," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said.dddddddddddd "When you let them get momentum and get in transition they convert quick, they can hit 3s, they throw lobs, and then it turns into a circus." The Pistons did have 24 fast-break points, but they went 2 of 11 from 3-point range. Detroits Brandon Jennings had only two points and three assists on 1-of-7 shooting, and for a second straight night, the Pistons went mostly with Will Bynum at point guard with the game on the line. Bynum had 17 points and eight assists. "We played a tough team tonight, and they beat us," Bynum said. "We had the energy in spurts tonight, but weve got to have that for 48 minutes and we arent doing that." Ellis scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, and the Mavericks benefited from Drummonds absence throughout the game. Greg Monroe had 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Pistons, but he had little help on the boards. Smith, for all his scoring, finished with only three rebounds, and he didnt score a point in the final period. Dallas had six players in double figures. Dalembert had 12 points and 11 rebounds -- six at the offensive end. Jose Calderon added 11 points and Shawn Marion scored 10. The Mavericks had 31 assists, one night after reaching a season-high 39 in a win at Philadelphia. Ellis had 11 assists in the first half against the Pistons, and Dallas led 64-54 at halftime. Smith -- who had 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting in the half -- kept Detroit from a bigger deficit. The Pistons were only down 39-36 when Drummond picked up his third foul with 9:03 left in the second quarter. The Mavericks slowly extended the margin after that. NOTES: Dallas improved to 17-8 against the East this season. ... Carter appeared to be hit in the midsection in the first quarter and grimaced as he came up the court. Then he took a pass and immediately spotted up for a 3-pointer that gave Dallas a 29-25 lead. ' ' '

The IceCaps now lead 3-1 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. Game 5 is Tuesday in Wilkes-Barre. Maxwells winner came on a scramble in front of the Penguins net. Jason King pushed a rebound into a crowd near the crease and Maxwell put it in for the game-winner. "It hit a couple shin pads in there and managed to wind up on my stick and go in," Maxwell said. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a 2-0 lead in the first period by scoring on its first two shots, but the IceCaps answered back with two in the second. "I thought we held our composure when we could have lost focus and gotten frustrated," St. Johns coach Keith McCambridge said. A scoreless third period sent the teams into overtime for the second time in less than 24 hours and St. Johns again came out on top. "Wilkes-Barre is a very good team and is playing some strong hockey," McCambridge said. "All of the games have been really strongly contested and expect more of the same."
