ARLINGTON, Texas -- Nelson Cruz took a slow trot around the bases after hitting a towering three-run homer in his return to Texas. The Baltimore Orioles slugger wasnt really savoring the moment. He was cramping so bad that he almost didnt even take that final at-bat in the eighth inning. Cruz hit the first pitch thrown by Shawn Tolleson, the fourth Rangers reliever, an estimated 404 feet deep into the left field seats to cap a tiebreaking six-run outburst as the Orioles won 8-3 on Tuesday night. "We were debating, he and I were," manager Buck Showalter said. "He go about halfway down the first, and that was a cramp trot." Likening his first game against the Rangers to one of his first days in the big leagues, when everything went so fast, Cruz said he just tried to stay in the moment and stay focused. "Kind of weird. Heading into free agency last year, Cruz missed the final 50 regular-season games for the Rangers for violating baseballs drug agreement. He went through the entire off-season before signing an $8 million, one-year deal with the Orioles early in spring training. "I havent seen him in a while and I got to see him and talk to him, playing around a little bit. It was a great feeling. I didnt like anytime he popped one," Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus said. Through 55 games with the Orioles, Cruz is hitting .313 and leads the majors with 21 homers and 55 RBIs. WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- The All Blacks worst fears were realized when flyhalf Dan Carter was ruled out of the Rugby World Cup with a groin injury Sunday, a bitter setback for host New Zealand. All Blacks coach Graham Henry told a news conference that Carter would take no further part in the tournament because of a serious injury sustained during kicking practice on Saturday. The injury occurred only hours after Carter had been named to captain New Zealand for the first time in his 84-test career in the absence of Richie McCaw, who was ruled out of the Canada match with an injured foot. New Zealanders have always seen an injury to Carter as a worst-case scenario which would heavily damage the All Blacks chances of winning the World Cup for the first time in 24 years. "Its devastating for Daniel. Hes been a world-class player for a long time, probably one of the greatest players ever produced by this country," Henry said. "This was going to be his pinnacle, the Rugby World Cup. Weve had a lot of focus on this tournament for the last couple of years and its devastating he cant be involved in that. "Its a tragic situation for a highly talented young sportsman. This was his scene really; a World Cup in New Zealand and it was going to be his big occasion." Henry said Carter wouldnt be feeling sorry for himself, despite the setback. "He doesnt talk that way, its the coach talking, so I feel very sad for him," Henry said. "Hes the type of guy who will handle this as best he can and hes got a huge strength of character. Hes a key All Black, not only on the field as the navigator of this team for a long time, but a key person off it. "Hes got great character and I just feel huge sympathy for him and his situation." McCaw went to see Carter on Saturday, after the hed "realized the worst news you can get." "Hes pretty devastated it ended like that," McCaw said in a television interview Sunday. "But I guess thats sport. It could happen to any one of us any time. From a team point of view, weve just got to keep marching on. "Theres no doubt ... he leaves a big hole. But it doesnt stop the tournament, weve got to carry on." Carter has scored a world-record 1,250 points in tests and is regarded as the best flyhalf in world rugby. The lack of an adequate replacement, if he was to succumb to injury, has been seen as the Achilles heel of the All Blacks World Cup campaign. Carters only specialist backup in the current All Blacks squad is Colin Slade, a 23-year-old novice who has played in eight matches in a test career that is less than a year old. Slades performances for New Zealand, since his debut as a replacement against Australia last year, have generally been nerve-ridden and erratic. He was due to start New Zealands final pool match against Canada later Sunday but needs a strong performance to convince the All Blacks selectors that he has the maturity to guide the team in the World Cups knockout rounds. If Slade is thought too inexperienced for the job, the No. 10 jersey may pass to Piri Weepu, the 52-test veteran who covers both halfback positions. "We had a scan done last night and unfortunately it has confirmed he has a significant left groin injury," Robinson said. "At the moment the plan is that hell come to Auckland with us tomorrow and well seek a specialist opinion about his management options. Surgery may be an option, but we obviously havent had that opinion yet, and when we do, well come to some conclusions after that." Henry said the All Blacks needed to "show strength," both to support Carter and to move on in the tournament in his absence. INDIANAPOLIS -- Dallas Clark never took his eyes off the screen as a video tribute played highlights from his time in Indianapolis. The standout tight end retired from the NFL after 11 seasons Wednesday and when he stepped to the podium at the teams practice facility, he could hardly keep his composure. This latest incident and game between these two teams has only escalated the hostilities they feel for one another. The next home-and-home meeting between these two teams is on April 1 in Pittsburgh and then back in Philly four days later. These are some of the memorable sights in and around the Grey Cup host city this week, but perhaps the most unique and curious visage of them all is something that is considered blasphemous to many fans of the Hamilton Tiger Cats - one of their coaches is wearing an Argonaut Grey Cup ring. The coach is defensive coordinator Orlondo Steinauer, who was Torontos defensive backs coach a year ago. The reason for donning the bling of the Ticats sworn mortal enemies? "I wear it because Im super proud," Steinauer told TSN.ca "Its a festival here, other people want to see it, some people have never seen it, so you just bring it out." The Ticats signed Steinauer on January 3 this year, a little over a month after the Argos Grey Cup win over Calgary. The Steeltowners hired Kent Austin as their head coach a couple of weeks earlier, and he quickly interviewed several people about becoming his defensive coordinator. He said that Steinauers philosophical viewpoint was similar to his, and that was a big selling point. "Not just about the game," said Austin, when talking about what he liked about Steinauers approach. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Ryan Getzlaf hates missing hockey games, and the Anaheim Ducks just arent the same when their captain isnt there. After one agonizing playoff game away, Getzlaf came roaring back to put the Ducks in command of their series with Dallas. Getzlaf had a goal and two assists in his return from injury, and the Ducks scored four power-play goals in a 6-2 victory over the Stars on Friday night to take a 3-2 lead in their first-round series. Getzlaf became the Ducks career post-season scoring leader with a dynamic performance that betrayed no problems from his undisclosed upper-body injury -- except maybe, he acknowledged, on a horrendous first-period giveaway to Jamie Benn for Dallas first goal. "I thought I got better as the game went on," Getzlaf said. "I felt more and more comfortable. The crowd was unbelievable. Everything was fired right up. They give us so much energy." INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana took every shot Miami could muster Wednesday night. Then the Pacers threw a couple of their own punches — and put the two-time defending champs on the mat. Paul George scored 23 points, Roy Hibbert added 21 and Indiana rallied from a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Heat 84-83, taking a three-game lead over Miami in the chase of the Eastern Conferences top seed. "Theyre the champs, theyre going to bring out the best in us," said David West, who made a 3-pointer with 50.2 seconds to go. "They bring out the best in anybody. I thought we just had enough fight." It was one of those rare grudge matches that actually lived up to the billing. Before the game, the teams chided one another with dueling comments. Afterward, nobody was ready to make up. And in between, the action got downright nasty. LeBron James needed a cotton swab in his nose to keep playing in the fourth quarter after getting whacked in the face. Dwyane Wade spent the final minute of the game icing his right hamstring. Pacers centre Roy Hibbert finished the game despite taking an elbow to the face that left him so groggy he didnt even remember getting hit. While it might be easy enough to accept the notion that its difficult for a player to affect on-ice shooting or save percentages, because they are heavily-dependent on other players, its another matter entirely to accept the premise that an NHL player doesnt necessrily have a significant impact on his own shooting percentage in a given season. For one thing, as much as it might be convenient for viewrs, a single season isnt enough to capture a players true shooting ability, which means there is a high degree of variance possible. This variance is important, particularly in terms of perception, because its how players end up having career years. When Brett Hull scored 86 goals in 1990-1991, he finished a career-high 22.1% of all of his shots; 65 goals for Alex Ovechkin in 2007-2008? Scored on a career-high 14.6% of all of his shots. Teemu Selannes 76-goal rookie season came on 19.6% shooting, the best of his career. This is how seasons go from good to great but, just as save percentage is wildly unpredictable for goaltenders from one year to the next, so too is shooting percentage for individual players. This is relevant because perception is widely based on goal-scoring. Goals determine winners and losers and are easy to identify, but the reason we pay attention to these outlier percentages is to have have some idea whats real and what isnt. Take Blues LW Alexander Steen, for example. Hes enjoying the best season of his career, with 33 goals and 60 points in 64 games. Hes a tremendous two-way player who has probably been underrated, but hes received more accolades this year because hes become a more prolific goal-scorer. Even though his scoring has slowed since an outrageous start to the year, when he scored 17 goals in 18 games, Steen ranks fifth in the league in goals per game, behind Steven Stamkos, Alex Ovechkin, Gustav Nyquist and Corey Perry. If Steen was finishing at his typical (5-on-5) rate, 8.87% over the previous five seasons coming into the year, that would knock 11 even-strength goals off his total and while 22 goals and 49 points in 64 games is a fine season, its not held in the same esteem as Steens 33-goal, 60-point season. When youve evaluating Steen going forward, is it fair to conclude that hes now the player who scores on 18.4% of his 5-on-5 shots, or is that departure from his established performance level essentially a fluke? There is a lot of randomness at play for a player to have his shooting percentage skyrocket, Steen (and his linemates -- David Backes and T.J. Oshie) deserve some credit because Steen is getting better quality shots than he has in previous seasons. Using Some Kind of Ninjas shot tracker, we can see that Steens average shooting distance, at even-strength, is 28.4 feet, his best of all years tracked since 2008-2009. So, getting shots 3-4 feet closer on average may account for some improvement, though most likely not enough to more than double his even-strength shooting percentage. Lets look at Nyquist, who had four goals in 40 NHL games entering this season and now has 28 goals in 51 games this year, virtually saving the Red Wings playoff chances. Even the most optimistic fan isnt going to expect Nyquist to keep scoring on more than 20% of his shots, simply because no one does. This isnt to rain on Nyquists current goal parade, because its awesome, but if we reasonably think that Nyquist might be an above-average shooter (even, as high as 12%), then that would typically mean 12 goals at 5-on-5 instead of 21 -- that nine-goal difference would be massive for both Nyquist and the Red Wings. Its the kind of thing that no player needs to apologize for, but everyone must understand that these runs will end and regression will bring a player closer to his real skill level. That can still be very good, just not necessarily the out-of-this-world pace that Nyquist is keeping now. By the same token, how many times do you hear a player, mired in a slump, say that they feel okay as long as they are getting their chances? Its cliche, but utterly true. And after a rough patch on the mound in April, hes off to a splendid start himself in May. Arroyo kept the Milwaukee Brewers at bay with off-speed stuff, allowing an unearned run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings, to lead Arizona over the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 Wednesday.
