"Its fun to play against a guy like Marty Brodeur, arguably the best goaltender of all-time," said Sharp, who only had six goals in last years lockout-shortened season that ended with Chicago winning the Stanley Cup. "You see guys like that on the ice, Jaromir Jagr as well, its crazy to line up against those guys." Duncan Keith had three assists and fellow defenceman Brent Seabrook two in the four-goal third period against Brodeur, who faced 24 shots. "They have three lines that can get you and their fourth line doesnt hurt them ever, either," Brodeur said. "We played them well, we were right there, and then they kind of took over. CLEVELAND - Mike Hegan, the former major league player who was a longtime broadcaster with the Cleveland Indians, has died. Maglia Italia Euro 2016 . He was 71. The Indians say Hegan had his family by his side when he died Wednesday morning in Hilton Head, S.C. No other details were provided by the team. Hegan was a radio and TV broadcaster for the Indians for 23 years. He retired after the 2011 season. He also spent 12 seasons as a broadcaster with the Milwaukee Brewers. The son of former Indians catcher Jim Hegan made the AL All-Star team with the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and helped the Oakland Athletics win the 1972 World Series. He also played in the 1964 World Series with the New York Yankees. Hegan hit .242 with 53 homers and 229 RBIs in 965 career games with three organizations, getting most of his time at first base and in the outfield. "I just want to jump well and do a good shuttle. The bench isnt really a concern for me." But Duvernay-Tardif admits to having a little fear of the unknown regarding what drills scouts will ask him to perform. "Its been a while since Ive done anything football-related," he said. "I want to work out for them but at the same time I dont know what theyre going to ask and you never really know what theyre going to look for." How Duvernay-Tardif performs and handles himself Thursday will be crucial. For many pro football personnel, it will be their first chance to see and speak with him and formulate that all-important first impression. But Duvernay-Tardif is approaching the workout like any other. "Im going to eat what I normally eat, maybe some cottage cheese, toast and fruit," he said. "Then Ill head to the gym and do a good warmup because I feel thats key when you run, you want to sweat a little bit before you do. They have an outstanding farm system that keeps grinding out prospects year after year and the fan base is one of the most rabid and loyal in all of baseball. It wasnt always so, though. In the late 40s and early 50s, the team went through a financial crisis that almost resulted in the team moving out of town. Though successful on the field in the 40s (four World Series appearances and three victories), Cards owner Sam Breadon was determined to build his own ballpark. Since 1920, the Redbirds had been renting Sportsmans Park from St. Louiss other team, the Browns. Breadon had set aside $5 million to construct his own facility. However, there was a five year limit for him to get this done before he would be facing some severe tax ramifications. Unable to find the land for a new ballpark, he wound up selling the Cardinals to Fred Saigh and his partner Robert Hannegan. Things continued to deteriorate under this duo, though, and by 1949 and in poor health; Hannegan was forced to sell his share of the team back to Saigh. The Cardinals slide on field went on unabated and by 1953, Saigh had to put the club up for sale. There were no local buyers stepping forward to purchase the club, so Saigh listened to offers from Houston and Milwaukee interests. He ultimately struck a deal with a Milwaukee group for $4 million to buy the team. That wasnt the end of it, though. A group of owners got together and vetoed the Milwaukee deal, instead pressuring Saigh to sell the club to beer baron "Gussie" Busch of Anheuser-Busch fame who vowed to keep the team in St. Louis. Saighs take was $3.75 million - less than he would have made had the team gone to Milwaukee. The Busch owned Cardinals ended up buying Sportsmans Park from the cash strapped Browns and they ended up moving themselves to Baltimore in 1954. After winning the World Series in 1946, the Cards did not win again until 1964, when they defeated the Yankees. As for Fred Saigh, he wound up going to prison for five months of a15 months sentence for Federal income tax evasion. After he was released from prison, Saigh went back into private business and amassed a large block of Anheuser-Busch stock. In fact, he became the second-largest stock holder in the company next to the Busch family itself. By the time he passed away at age 94, Fred Saigh was worth $500 million. He left $70 million of that to charity, establishing the Fred Saigh Foundation. Though Fred Saigh may have been the Cardinals worst owner, in a way he helped ensure the Cardinals would win the battle for the fans affections with the Browns and helped make St. Louis a one team town by selling the team even if somewhat reluctantly to Gussie Busch. A few weeks ago, I wrote about next year being the 100th anniversary of Wrigley Field. I wondered if anyone was still alive from the last time the Cubs appeared in the World Series. It turns out there is one player left. That mans name is Lenny Merullo. He is 96 years old and played in three of the games of 45 Series. Lenny Merullo went on to become head scout with the Cubs from 1950 to 1972 and one of his grandsons Matt played for six years in the Majors, mainly with the White Sox. Turning over a roster from year to year or being unwilling to pay for top-level offensive talent means relying heavily on the draft or free agents who fly under the radar of other teams. New England has used a high percentage of its recent draft picks on defence, apparently believing that Brady is good enough on his own to make mediocre talent superior. Similarly, most of their highest paid players, besides Brady, play on defence. New Englands dominance and ability to get away with weaknesses on its roster is in part a function of playing in the AFC East where Buffalo, Miami and the Jets have made simply being competent enough to get to the top of the division. And then there is Brady who is still a very, very good NFL quarterback but is at the age where many of the all-time greats have begun a steep decline. Sure the talent around him isnt what it once was but its been a few years since he had Randy Moss to throw to and somehow the Patriots never looked this bad. Brady looks uncomfortable and yet the coaches he has surrounding him in Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels are the same ones who helped his offence become the highest of all time back in 2007. Brady right now has the lowest completion percentage for pass attempts of over 10 yards of anyone in the NFL right now and the highest off-target percentage in the entire league. His completion percentage last season was his lowest since 2003 and is worse this season. On a good team, surrounded by elite talent, Tom Brady could still be a winner. There have been many seasons of late when people were ready to write-off New England, only to see them show up in the AFC Championship Game once again. But if Belichick can get this group that far this season, it may indeed be time to crown him the greatest NFL coach of all time.
