BANFF, Alta. -- Canadian freestyle skier Roz Groenewoud isnt letting surgery to both of her knees deter her expectations for the Sochi Olympics. The womens halfpipe star injured her left knee in training at last weeks Dew Tour in Colorado. The 2011 world champion had the operations done Tuesday and is expected to fully recover in four-to-six weeks. The Feb. 7-23 Sochi Games begin in just over seven weeks. Groenewoud is expected to be a podium contender in womens halfpipe skiing, a discipline that will make its Olympic debut next year. "Im still feeling really good about the Olympics and my chances there," she said during a conference call Thursday. "I think this is definitely a step back . . . but it really gives me a chance to focus and come back with even more focus having a very outlaid plan of how Im going to have a comeback essentially. "I think through this whole buildup to the Games Ive been pretty good focusing on the process, not the overall celebration. The surgeries I had on both my knees are very minor compared to what a lot of other athletes have to go through." Given that Groenewoud has had nagging issues with her right knee as well, her team made the decision to scope both joints at the same time after consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. "The menisci problems of both knees put her at risk for more severe injuries," said Dr. Mark Heard. "Im very optimistic about a speedy recovery." Heard added the prognosis was excellent given Groenewouds "two very healthy knees in all other respects plus good leg strength and body mechanics." Groenewoud, from Calgary, secured her place on the Olympic team last week despite the injury. She was able to complete the qualifying run and finished 10th. "The surgery was to address some issues with the lateral meniscus in both knees," she said. "The left one was a bit more serious than the right, I had a larger, more problematic tear. "However, the right one ended up having a larger tear than what showed up on the MRI so Dr. Heard cleaned up both meniscus, drained some of the extra fluid that was under my patella (in right knee) and generally just made them prettier and more functional." Groenewoud is hoping to return to competition midway through next month at an event in California. "That is totally dependent on how the swelling goes and the advice from the team at the CFSA," she said. "California, nice weather . . . skiing in California is always so much fun." In the meantime, Groenewoud has returned to Calgary, where she said shes enjoying the benefits of some home cooking from her mother. "She made me one of my favourite pastas (Wednesday night), a clam pasta that was pretty delicious," Groenewoud said. "Generally I dont make myself pasta very often or eat very much pasta so it was very comforting." cheap jerseys . The left-hander, who hasnt thrown in a week because of stiffness in his neck and back, just hopes things are different from last year. He was the opening day starter then, but made only one more start. "Kind of trade-off from last year," Harrison said Sunday. "Only making two and miss 30, and miss two and make 30, that would be nice. Even though Harrison is feeling much better after switching beds, he was still returning to Texas to be examined by the specialist who did both operations last year for a herniated disk in his lower back. "I think at this stage, based upon the initial symptoms that he reported, we just wanted to make sure were all clear before we ramp up again," Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said. Harrison had also been scheduled to throw live batting practice last Tuesday and wanted to pitch, but the Rangers held him out of that as a precaution because of neck stiffness. Two days later, he was scratched again from a throwing session with stiffness in his back. An MRI showed no immediate cause for concern, but the Rangers scheduled an appointment with Dr. Drew Dossett, who wasnt available until Monday because he was at the NFL combine. "I think for sure the bed was an issue. Since Ive gotten out of that bed and switched bbeds I havent had any issues," Harrison said.dddddddddddd "Everybody usually feels sore the first couple of days just getting back acclimated to running around out there." Harrison won 18 games and was an All-Star in 2012, then got a $55 million, five-year contract. He had never had any back issues before last spring, and still made his first two scheduled starts. After going 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA, Harrison got two epidural injections and a second opinion before two operations in a matter of weeks. Harrison threw for a couple of months with no problems before camp this year, so he expect to have to completely start over when he is cleared by the Rangers to throw again. He hopes hes able to make his season debut no later than the middle of April. "This little setback set them on high alert and theyre probably going to slow it down a little bit," he said. "Which I hate because going through a healthy off-season and being ready to go its tough to get shut down. But its early." Levine said the Rangers put a lot more value on having Harrison healthy for the stretch drive late in the season than a start in April. "Were not panicking," manager Ron Washington said. "He is feeling better. Hes not feeling what caused us to shut him down anymore, so hopefully when the doctor sees him, it was just was some residual from everything he had done." ' ' '

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Aaron Rodgers led the Green Bay Packers offence to a record-setting day. Rodgers was 34 for 42 for a career-high 480 yards and four touchdowns, receiver James Jones had a career-best 178 yards and James Starks ran for 132 yards and a score in a 38-20 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday. According to the Packers, it was the first time in NFL history that any team had a 450-yard passer and 125-yard rusher in the same game. "We were able to catch the ball well, had yards after the catch and we were able to run the ball better than we have in a long time," Rodgers said. Rodgers 480 yards passing tied a franchise record set by former teammate Matt Flynn on Jan. 1, 2012, against the Lions. Sunday was also the first time that the Packers had a 400-yard passer and 100-yard rusher in the same game. Rodgers had his big game after waking up with a stiff neck. "I was hurting pretty bad. I wasnt feeling great pregame," Rodgers said. What he termed as an "adjustment" from a trainer once he got to the stadium made him feel better. "Once the adrenaline started going, I just kind got into a rhythm," he said. Especially in the first half. The Packers started sluggish, allowing three sacks of Rodgers in the first 9 minutes, then responded with touchdowns on three straight drives. The defence held Robert Griffin III in check in the first half, and Green Bay rolled to a 24-0 lead at halftime. Green Bay (1-1) bounced back after a season-opening loss at San Francisco. The Redskins (0-2) will need to regroup again after getting off to a slow start for a second straight week. Last week, the Redskins fell behind 26-7 at halftime before rallying in the second half in a 33-27 loss to the Eagles. "We cant really put our finger on what it is, and thats the real frustrating part," Griffin said. He finished 26 for 40 for 320 yards and three touchdowns, but most of that came in the second half with the Packers ahead by three scores. "I thought we almost had to play error-free football, play one of our better games," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said, "and probably did just the opposite in the first half." Randall Cobb added nine catches for 128 yards and a 35-yard touchdown on a crossing route for a 10-0 lead on a fourth-and-3 play in the first quarter. Rodgers added touchdown passes to Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley in the second quarter. The Packers led 24-0 at the half, and Rodgers already had 335 yards passing. Rodgers credited his receivers for gaining lots of ground after catches against the Redskins secondary. But coach Mike McCarthy knows what Rodgers means to the offence, too. "You know, he spoils me. He makes it look easy," McCarthy said. "No doubt, Aaron is a special football player. Hes at the point of his career where he is about making other people better, pulling everybody up." Such as the time when he scrambled to his right while being chased by Brian Orapko. Rodgers waited just long enough to find Finley for a 3-yard touchdown pass. Not that he watched it. Just at the moment Rodgers released, Orapko took him to the ground on a clean hit. Just as the fans in the stands erupted with delight, Rodgers, on his back, pumped his fist in the air. Griffin, in the second game of his much-anticipated return from right knee surgery, looked OK but didnt resemble the quarterback who confounded defences last year. The Packers defence threw a couple of different wrinkles, including a sack on a blitz by reserve cornerback Davon House. Mike Neal intercepted Griffin after receiver Josh Morgan lost his grip on the ball after being hit by Clay Matthews. Griffins most memorable play of the first half might have been when his helmet flew off while being tackled by linebackers Matthews and A.J. Hawk. "Well be better moving forward," Griffin said. "Well figure this out." Pierre Garcon finished with eight catches for 143 yards against a Packers defence playing again without injured safety Morgan Burnett. Alfred Morris had 13 carries for 107 yards for Washington. Notes: Packers RB Eddie Lacy left the game early in the first quarter with a concussion after getting hit by Redskins S Brandon Meriweather, who also departed in the second quarter after suffering a concussion. Both players were hurt on apparent helmet-to-helmet hits ... Redskins K Kai Forbath missed the game with a sore groin. He was replaced by John Potter, who was signed Saturday. Potter made two extra-point attempts and went wide right on a 50-yard attempt ... The Packers extended their franchise-record streak to 17 straight homes with at least 22 points scored. cheap nfl jerseys . To do it, theyll have to get past baseballs big roadblock. Tom Lehman, who leads the race for the Charles Schwab Cup and its $1 million payday, was among a group tied at 3-under. Lehman is trying to become the first golfer to ever win player of the year honours on the Nationwide, PGA and Champions tours. Victorias Jim Rutledge shot a 72 for even par. Price, who won the Toshiba Classic in March, has struggled in the past two months.dddddddddddd He said he finally noticed an unconscious change in his backswing that caused him to shorten his swing. "This is, after literally six really poor tournaments, the thing that I worked the hardest on the last two years, I just neglected," Price said. "Its been very frustrating. "But today was the best Ive played since May, June, ball-striking-wise. All in all, it was an A day for me, a really good day." Pavin said he also made a swing change this week after talking to (swing coach) Greg LaBelle, who made suggestions to Pavin after watching his swing via email. "I worked on it the last couple of days, and I made some changes," Pavin said. "I really felt a lot more comfortable on the golf course today than I have in a long time. "I did some work on my putter as well, and that was better." Play was delayed in the afternoon for 2 hours, 14 minutes when a thunderstorm moved through the area. ' ' '

Coach Mike Babcock wanted each player to know what it would take to make the team, but its up to general manager Steve Yzerman and his staff to start evaluating once the regular season gets underway. "The final scouting for the management group to put the final roster together begins immediately," Yzerman said. Thats a lot of pressure all around, when the expectation in Canada is nothing short of a gold medal. Team Canadas management group has a representative from every division -- the Boston Bruins Peter Chiarelli, the Detroit Red Wings Ken Holland, the St. Louis Blues Doug Armstrong and the Edmonton Oilers Kevin Lowe -- so the spotlight will be bright. "I think its going to be on your mind fairly often, whether youre being asked about it or youre playing against guys who were at the camp, its going to come up," Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. "Its always in the back of your mind, but I think if you just focus on playing well for your own team and making sure you have a good first half, then everything kind of takes care of itself." In the immediate future, players return to their preparations for training camp. Canadas coaches and front-office personnel have jobs to do as well, but theyll stay in touch regularly, mostly on conference calls. "Well arrange our schedule over the next week or so to get ready for the start of the regular season," Yzerman said Tuesday evening. "Well get together as a group early November to narrow things down a little bit and talk about what were seeing and make sure were all in constant communication and get organized from November to mid-December and make our final decisions at that point." The focus will be on monitoring the 47 players invited to camp, even though anyone can work his way into the Olymppic conversation with a strong enough start.dddddddddddd Yzerman doesnt consider anyone who was in Calgary a "long shot." "Well keep an eye on everybody but focus on particular teams, particular games, particular players that were deciding on," he said. "There was a few guys we dont feel the need to watch. But we know what they can do and theyre going to be on this team, assuming theyre healthy." Yzerman estimated that, conservatively, there were eight or nine locks to make it. Crosby, Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and defenceman Duncan Keith, Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber, Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty, Tampa Bay Lightning centre Steven Stamkos, Boston Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron, New York Islanders centre John Tavares and New York Rangers winger Rick Nash seem to fit that bill. Putting together the rest of the roster could be a painstaking process, considering Canadas depth. Weber wants no part of that. "Thats why Im the player, theres too many tough decisions," he said. "You go down the list and everybody deserves the chance. Thats why theyre here. Theres even guys that arent here that probably will get a good look during the season. Were very fortunate in Canada to have a big selection, but definitely some tough choices." Yzerman expects to have the roster figured out by mid-to-late December. The deadline for all countries to submit is Dec. 31. Between now and then, plenty could change Team Canadas potential makeup. "Theres a lot of could-bes, but I think the first half of the year just has such an impact on whos on the team," Crosby said. "Im sure theres some guys in mind, but therell be guys who have standout first halves, and will make it tough not to be selected. So I think were going to see here in the first half who really shows they want to be part of it." ' ' '

MELBOURNE, Australia - Appearing uncomfortable for much of the match, defending champion Novak Djokovic held on to beat David Ferrer 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-1 and complete a blockbuster semifinal lineup at the Australian Open. He leads the top four men in tennis into the semis at Melbourne Park — Djokovic against No. 4 Andy Murray, who won his quarter-final match earlier Wednesday 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 over Kei Nishikori of Japan. On Thursday, No. 2 Rafael Nadal plays No. 3 Roger Federer, the first time the two former top-ranked stars have met in a semifinal since the 2005 French Open. It marks only the third time that the top four seeds have advanced to the semis at the Australian Open — previously it was in 1988 and 2005. It was also the 14th time at all Grand Slams since the Open Era began in 1968, but it has happened in three of the last four — after the U.S. Open and French Open last year. Djokovic rubbed the back of his upper left leg on several occasions, looked on the verge of being physically sick in the second set and buried his head in towels several times during breaks. Late in the third set, a tired-looking Djokovic sat down on a linesmans chair during a line-call video challenge by Ferrer. "I was lucky to get out of the second set, it was a big mental advantage to get two sets up," Djokovic said. An hour after the match, Djokovic further played down the possibility of any injuries, saying: "I dont have any physical issues." "I feel very fit and I feel mentally, as well, very fresh," he told his post-match news conference. "Its just today I found it very difficult after a long time to breathe because I felt the whole day my nose was closed a little bit. I just wasnt able to get enough oxygen." Ferrer said he couldnt be sure if Djokovic was healthy — or not. "You have to ask to him," Ferrer said, "he ran perfect all the match. Nothing special." The Nadal-Federer semifinal matchup has been rarely possible because the pair held the top two spots for most of the time between 2005 and 2010, meaning they could only meet in the finals after being placed in opposite sides of the draw. Djokovic said hed be watching the Nadal and Federer match like any tennis fan. "I will enjoy it from my couch, theyre two out of four or five of the greatest players to play this game, theyve been so dominant," Djokovic said. "Every time they play its a treat. Im going to have a nice dinner at home and watch them." Murray, for his part, is also surprised to be not facing Nadal in the semifinals. "It has been amazing, I pretty much drew to be in Nadals half ... almost every Slam," Murray said. "I cant remember the last time I wasnt in his half of the draw. Its been a long time." In mens doubles action, Torontos Daniel Nestor and Belarusian partner Max Mirnyi reached the semifinals, defeating Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and German Christopher Kas 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2. Nestor, 39, has played in four Australian Open doubles finals and won the title with Mark Knowles of the Bahamas a decade ago. "We came her to win the event," Nestor said. "Weve gone this far but the matches are only going to get tougher. "Thats why we had the short off-season and came early to Brisbane. Hopefully we can win, its been a long time for me here." In junior play, Vancouvers Filip Peliwo defeated Czech Marek Routa 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round. But Peliwo and Serbian partner Pedja Krstin lost 6-4, 6-7 (6), 10-3 tiebreak to Australians Andrew Harris and Nick Kyrgios in the doubles quarter-finals. Second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Montreal beat American Christina Makarova 7-5, 7-5 in third-round girls play. SAN FRANCISCO -- A 20-year winless streak and a history of back pain behind him, Jay Don Blake finally feels comfortable on the Champions Tour. Hes playing like it, too. Blake emerged from a pack of contenders and shot a 5-under 66 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after the third round of the season-ending Charles Schwab Championship. "Its given me quite a bit of confidence, knowing that I feel like I belong and I can win out here," Blake said. "I just think a lot of us want it so bad ... that we probably get in our own way sometimes trying to make things happen instead of just being patient. Thats what Ive tried to do, just be patient with myself." Jay Haas shot a 67 to join Michael Allen (69) and David Frost (69) at 6 under. Loren Roberts was another stroke back after a 65, the best round of the tournament. Rod Spittle (72) of Niagara Falls, Ont., was tied at 16th at 1 over. A day after limping through the final seven holes because of nagging lower back pains, Haas looked fine while moving back into contention. "It doesnt seem to hurt when I swing," Haas said. "Its funny, when Im standing around it bothers me. With the adrenaline, Im able to hit." Charles Schwab Cup points leader Tom Lehman was tied for 16th at 1 over after a 72. Mark Calcavecchia, 382 points behind Lehman, had a 70 that left him tied for sixth at 4 under. He needs to finish at least second to win the season title Fred Couples, tied with Allen for the second-round lead, shot a 74 to drop into a tie for 12th at 1 under. Blake, who went 424 consecutive tournaments without a win until capturing the Songdo IBD Championship in South Korea earlier this season, had five birdies in his bogey-free round at TPC Harding Park. He pulled ahead with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 and finished at 8 under. Not bad for someone who hadnt played this course before and who began the season playing on partial-exemption status while needing to play Monday qualifiers in some of the events. The victory in South Korea in September -- Blakes first on any tour since the PGA Tours 1991 Shearson Lehman Brothers Open -- gave him full status through next year. Blake also is free from the back pain that hindered him earlier in his career and forced him to step away from the PGA tour earlier than he wanted. Though he still has to do stretching exercises before each round to keep his back loose, Blake is making up for lost time playing at Harding for the first time. While Frost and Allen both took sole possession of the lead and then lost it, Blake quietly worked his way up the leaderboard with birdies on Nos. 2, 8 and 9. He got to 7 under with another birdie on 16, then made a 30-foot putt from the fringe on 17. "When I hit it I thought it was going to come about three feet short," Blake said. "I think the spectators in the bleachers cheered it in. They were saying, Roll, roll, roll." Haas also closed strong to get back in contention. The U.S. Presidents Cup assistant captain had three birdies on the front, bogeyed No. 11 then birdied the final two holes. Frost and Allen stayed within range of the leaders despite both struggling down the stretch with two bogeys apiece over the final six holes. Allen was at 7 under until his bogey at par-4 18th dropped him back. "Definitely a cooler, difficult day," Allen said. "Im struggling to hit the ball. Im not quite on my game right now." Roberts, the points champion in 2007 and 09, had seven birdies and a bogey after going 1 over through the first two round. Couples dropped well off the pace after double bogeys on 12 and 18. He also had a bogey on No. 8, a par 3. Earlier, Couples and Calcavecchia were greeted on the first tee by Hall of Fame baseball great Willie Mays. Mays laughed with the two players and joked with their caddies while fans looked on. This isnt the first time Couples and Mays have talked, either. The two first met at the Presidents Cup here in 2009, and earlier this week Couples fondly recalled spending two hours then with Mays. cheap nfl jerseys . Louis. In the weeks leading up to the end of the season, speculation was rife that the Scotsman would be replaced so the news comes as no surprise. Its a move that may even have happened if the Whitecaps had managed to sneak into the playoffs. Rennie has trumpeted his teams achievements loudly in recent weeks. This year, they set the clubs highest ever MLS points total, scored the most goals, won the Cascadia Cup against their rivals Seattle and Portland, and beat the Sounders, LA and New York for the first time in MLS. Brazilian sensation Camilo secured the leagues Golden Boot and the club won the MLS Player of the Week award a league high seven times. There was plenty to shout about, and on a number of occasions at BC Place this season, they played some scintillating soccer to entertain and engage the fan-base. However, those achievements mean very little without reaching the two main goals of making the playoffs and winning the Canadian Championship. The Whitecaps came close to both, but close wasnt good enough for Rennie to keep his job. Its true that the club has made progress in each of the seasons Rennie was in charge, but this year, that progress just wasnt big enough to keep up with the teams around them. The fact is, in an extremely competitive Western Conference, the Whitecaps slipped back. Their progress was much smaller than other teams such as Portland and Colorado, who took big strides forward. Its not just about the seasons record. There were other issues at play. Rennies team selections often provoked much discussion, including his desire to play Japanese defensive midfielder Jun Marques Davidson, especially at home. There was the regression of 2012 number 2 draft pick Darren Mattocks, the lack of playing time down the stretch for youngster Gershon Koffie and teenager Kekuta Mannehs thunderous impact when finally handed starts late in the season. Also at times, the Whitecaps looked as though they were trying to fit square pegs in round holes, until they finally switched to a 4-4-2 diamond midfield system late in the year. The fact the Caps lost their captain and highest paid defender Jay DeMerit just seven minutes into the new season, and were without their DP striker Kenny Miller for long sttretches due to injury clearly didnt help.dddddddddddd The Whitecaps never really had a settled side because of injuries and also the coachs choice. Did Rennie know what his best 11 was and the best way to utilize them? It seemed he was still trying to figure that out late in the year. Of course, with any team and any coach anywhere in the world, there are bound to be questions about player selections and formations, but theres little doubt these questions played into the mind of those making the decision. Although Whitecaps ownership has decided to go in a different direction, Rennie still deserves much credit for what he has achieved during his time in Vancouver. He leaves the Whitecaps in a much better position than when he arrived at the club following a dismal expansion season. Over the last couple of years, they have established themselves as an MLS club, assembled a much stronger squad and made the playoffs for the first time in 2012 after turning around one of the worst teams in the league. The Whitecaps are still missing a couple of key pieces that will need to be found in the off-season, but they have a young, dynamic squad that can be a contender for the foreseeable future. Players like Camilo, Gershon Koffie, Kekuta Manneh and Russell Teibert have the potential to be big stars in Major League Soccer, and there are more coming through the Whitecaps pipeline with the likes of Sam Adekugbe ready to step into the first team squad next year. Rennies hiring of some strong assistant coaches, Paul Ritchie, Carl Robinson and Jake DeClute assisted the development of many of the clubs younger players. They were all very shrewd hires by a thoughtful, intelligent head coach. So what now? I think starting completely from scratch would be a massive mistake. There is some momentum. The Whitecaps arent too far off with the squad they have had assembled, so whoever takes charge should be willing to add to what is already in place rather that start again and try to do things a different way. All indications are that former Canadian National Team coach Frank Yallop has already been lined up to take charge. He is available and seems the obvious choice. Hes from Vancouver and has plenty of experience in MLS, is a two-time MLS Coach of the Year and won the Supporters Shield with San Jose Earthquakes a year ago. If Yallop retains current assistant coach Carl Robinson, it would allow the club to keep some consistency while adding experience to its ranks. ' ' '

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Marc Gasol had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Mike Miller added 19 points, and the Memphis Grizzlies made a strong push in the third quarter to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 117-95 on Friday night. Tony Allen scored 15 points to help the Grizzlies preserve their playoff hopes. Memphis entered the night trailing the Suns by a game for the Western Conferences final post-season spot. The Suns were playing San Antonio. Nick Calathes added 12 points for Memphis, while Zach Randolph finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Grizzlies won their 13th straight at home, matching the franchise record set last season. Tony Wroten and Thaddeus Young led the Sixers with 18 points apiece. Elliot Williams added 13 for Philadelphia, which lost its third straight and fifth in the last six. The Grizzlies held a 10-point lead at halftime and outscored the Sixers 30-17 in the third with Allen and Gasol scoring eight points each. Memphis continued to dominate on the interior, outscoring Philadelphia 60-48 in the paint and outrebounding the Sixers 49-36 for the game. The Grizzlies shot 54 per cent from the field, compared to 44 per cent for the 76ers. Memphis shot 55 per cent in the first half to carry a 57-47 lead at intermission. Miller was 5 of 7, including connecting on all three of his shots outside the arc, as he and Gasol scored 13 points each. Gasol converted all but one of his seven shots in the half. Young scored 10 points for Philadelphia. Memphis led by as many as 12 in the first half, and its biggest problem was getting back on defence, allowing a couple of breakaways by Philadelphia. One of those irritated coach Dave Joerger so much, he called a quick timeout despite the Grizzlies leading. Memphis was hampered by eight turnovers in the half, and committed 16 on the night. The Grizzlies continued to build the lead in the third, turning up the defence as the Sixers seemed to lose whatever spirit they had at this point in a tough season. Near the end of the quarter and with the shot clock running down, Gasol connected from outside the top of the key -- only his second 3-pointer of the season -- to help the Grizzlies carry an 87-64 lead into the fourth. That was enough for Memphis to coast to the finish and get starters some rest heading into the final stretch run of the season. NOTES: The Sixers had several Memphis connections. Wroten was drafted by the Grizzlies. Elliot Williams and 10-day signee Adonis Thomas played at the University of Memphis, while Thaddeus Young was a high school standout in the city. Arnett Moultrie, who also played high school ball in Memphis, was inactive serving five-game suspension for violating league anti-drug policy. ... BARCELONA, Spain -- A youthful Barcelona team without Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta had little trouble beating BATE Borisov 4-0 on Tuesday to extend its unbeaten run at home in the Champions League to 13 matches. Despite coach Pep Guardiola resting most of his first-team players for next weeks "clasico" at Real Madrid, Barcelona stayed true to its style and dominated throughout. Sergi Roberto, a 19-year-old midfielder, scored the hosts opener in the 35th minute before 20-year-old defender Martin Montoya doubled the lead in the 60th. Pedro Rodriguez scored in the 63rd and capped the win with a penalty in the 89th. Barcelona had already advanced to the last 16 as Group H winner, while the Belarusian champions finished fourth. AC Milan went through as runner-up and Viktoria Plzen finished third to earn a spot in the Europa league. Those teams drew 2-2 on Tuesday. "This shows that our youth teams are very strong," said Pedro, a former product of Barcelonas La Masia academy. "These young players want to get a spot in the first team and they run a lot to try and earn it." It was Barcelonas 10th straight home game in all competitions without conceding a goal. During that stretch, Guardiolas team has outscored its opponents 40-0 at Camp Nou stadium. Coach Pep Guardiola chose Pedro to lead a starting team mainly composed of Barcelonas next crop of young talent. "The club is very fortunate to have this generation of players to draw from," Guardiola said. Striker Rafinha Alcantara, playing alongside older brother Thiago, had Barcelonas first chance two minutes in when he fired at goalkeeper Aleksandr Gutor. Forward Isaac Cueenca, who capped a strong performance with a goal in Barcelonas 5-0 rout of Levante at the weekend, provided the biggest threat for the hosts early on with a pair of strikes that went wide.dddddddddddd. BATE came close to taking advantage of a Barcelona turnover in the 26th, but defender Marc Bartra scrambled to clear a dangerous cross from Artyom Kontsevoi. Barcelona took control when Roberto, playing in place of Cesc Fabregas as an attacking midfielder, coolly slotted a loose ball into the right corner of the net after a BATE defender had deflected Thiagos incisive pass into his path. "This is a great day for the youth team and the club," Roberto said. "Almost all of us play together on the B team and this showed as we combined well." The Catalan side pressed further up the pitch to quickly decide the match after halftime. Montoya, who earned his first call-up to Spains senior team earlier this season, made it 2-0 when he raced in from the right flank to blast in Cuencas pass. Three minutes later, the 20-yeard-old Cuenca was again at the heart of Barcelonas attack by sending in a low cross for Pedro to deftly redirect the ball into the net with the inside of his right heel. The last goal was also manufactured by Barcelonas latest young star, Cuenca drawing a foul from Aleksandr Volodko in the area. Pedro stroked the ball in from the spot kick. "It is good to score to help me regain my confidence after being out a few weeks with injury," said Pedro, who lost his starting spot this season with the arrival of Fabregas and Chile forward Alexis Sanchez. "Now we have to think about the clasico and prepare for it well." ' ' '

Burris asked his followers Wednesday how much responsibility Nittany Lions football coach Joe Paterno bears for the child sex abuse scandal involving his former defensive co-ordinator. "If Paterno had seen it happen with his own eyes he should report it but he didnt! He received info from someone who say(s) he did! What to do?" Burris tweeted. Fleury says he was sexually abused by hockey coach Graham James, who has been charged with sex offences in Manitoba. Fleury commented: "ok so they talked covered it up and allowed (Jerry) Sandusky to keep molesting boys. Come on Hank. (Youre) better than that." The legendary Paterno has faced outrage that he did not take more action after a graduate assistant came to him in 2002 and reported seeing Sandusky in the Penn State showers with a 10-year-old boy. Paterno notified the athletic director and a vice-president, both of whom have since been charged with failing to report the incident to the authorities. Paterno, who hasnt been accused of legal wrongdoing, said in a statement that, "With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." Sandusky, who retired from Penn State in 1999, has maintained his innocence through his lawyer. Burris says hes not an apologist for Paterno, but wanted to get people talking about the issue. "We can bring light to this situation and Im glad that Theo got involved," the quarterback said following Stampeder practice. "Im glad we had the discussion we did on Twitter. "For me to get people here today and talking about it, that was my main point because I want people to know thats not acceptable." Fleury did not immediately respond to a message left by The Canadian Press. James has been charged in Manitoba with sexual exploitation, sexual assault and gross indecency and Fleury is one of three complainants in the case.dddddddddddd "Recently Ive been going back and forth with Henry Burris on this disgusting Penn State debacle," Fleury wrote on his website. "I have one stand. If an adult has even the slightest suspicion that a child is being abused, it is your duty as an adult to stand up for that child and do something now." The scandal has rocked the sports community, particularly football, throughout North America. Burris and Fleury are prominent sports figures in Calgary. Fleury is a former Flame who helped Calgary win a Stanley Cup in 1989. Burris, who played college ball at Temple, was the Stampeders starting quarterback until recently. The 36-year-old was the CFLs Most Outstanding Player last season. When asked by reporters about their earlier Twitter exchange, Burris was in agreement with Fleury. "If people see something like that going on, you should report it right away," Burris said. "If I see something like that, I report it right away, if I dont beat the crap out of somebody. "Ive talked to Theo a number of times about the situation and weve weighed in on it together." Burris also had a message for sexual predators. "If there are people out there who have those thoughts, go get help right away," he said to reporters. "Dont damage somebodys life because yours is already." Burris is the father of two young sons and also works with the local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Hes a regular on Twitter and often posts messages about lifes lessons. But Burris got into hot water earlier this season when a crude tweet was posted under his account. The Calgary Stampeders were satisfied Burris wasnt the author and intended to find out if his account was hacked. Stampeder head coach and general manager John Hufnagel was quarterback at Penn State under Paterno from 1970 to 1972. Hufnagel said Wednesday he hadnt heard his former coach was stepping down and didnt have an opinion "at this time." ' ' '

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador -- El Salvador authorities raided the homes of 11 players on Thursday after the countrys football federation suspended 22 players in an investigation into alleged match-fixing in games by the national team, including against the United States and Mexico. Public prosecutors said the raids took place in six cities. Federal prosecutor Luis Martinez told Radio Nacional de El Salvador that computers, electronic tablet devices and cellphones were among the items seized during the raids. He said authorities will also try to gain access to the bank accounts of those involved, both locally and abroad. The prosecutor said there was already evidence of at least three offences, including money laundering, and warned that not only players could be charged in the scheme. "Possibly there are officials and some high-level people involved," Martinez said. "We are going to get to the bottom of it." He said the investigation is separate from the one started by the local federation, which on Wednesday said the players who participated in the suspect matches will be suspended for 30 days as the allegations are investigated. "This is not a punishment, these are provisional, precautionary measures," Federation President Carlos Mendez Cabezas said. The CONCACAF, the sports continental governing body, said it was fully behind the investigation in El Salvador. "CONCACAF is deeply saddened by these claims of match manipulation within the football community," it said in a statement. The International Olympic Committee stripped the American rider of the bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney Games in January after he admitted to doping. After months of delays, Armstrong handed back the medal two weeks ago to the U.S. Olympic Committee. The IOC said on Wednesday it has received the medal from the USOC and placed it in storage at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. "Yes, we have it," IOC spokesman Mark Adams told The Associated Press. "It is in the vaults." The return of the medal marks "the end of a sad chapter for the sport," Adams said. The IOC will not reallocate Armstrongs bronze medal, just as cyclings ruling body decided not to declare any winners for the seven Tour de France titles once held by the American. Armstrong finisshed third in the road time trial in Sydney behind winner and U.ddddddddddddS. Postal Service teammate Vyacheslav Ekimov of Russia and Jan Ullrich of Germany. Spanish rider Abraham Olano Manzano, who finished fourth in Sydney, will not be upgraded and the bronze medal will be left vacant in Olympic records. Last year, the IOC stripped Tyler Hamilton, a former Armstrong teammate, of his time-trial gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics after he acknowledged doping. In that case, Ekimov was upgraded to gold. Armstrong denied doping for years until his confession in January in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. The confession came after a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report detailed widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs by Armstrong and his USPS team. Armstrong was stripped of the seven Tour de France titles he won from 1999-2005. ' ' '

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Defensive end-linebacker Mike Neal apparently is returning to the Packers. A posting Wednesday evening on the Twitter account of the unrestricted free agent said "Hi Green Bay!!! Ill enjoy your winters for two more years!!" Messaged left by The Associated Press for Neals agent were not immediately answered. Neal on Twitter later received congratulations from Johnny Jolly, himself an unrestricted free agent who played last year in Green Bay. In his fourth year out of Purdue, Neal last season played more linebacker and rushed from the outside in the Packers 3-4 scheme. It turned out to be an important move with Clay Matthews and Nick Perry missing time due to injuries. Neal had five sacks in 16 games and 10 starts last season, all career highs. Green Bay on Wednesday did lose safety M.D. Jennings, who signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears. Jennings had one interception in 26 starts over the last two seasons. Coach Mike McCarthy has said he would like more impact players across the defence, and the team could turn to the draft to address the safety spot opposite Morgan Burnett. As for Jolly, a message on his Twitter account Tuesday said that he had "great news" from his doctor about the neck injury that knocked him out late last season. The neck fusion had "healed perfectly" and he had a "green light" to start some strength work, Jolly said. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL cheap jerseys . MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Strong play by the Memphis reserves early in the fourth period gave the Grizzlies a burst of energy down the stretch. The Memphis bench stayed even with the Indiana Pacers during the early stages of the final period, giving the Grizzlies starters the extra stamina for a 98-92 victory on Friday night. Rudy Gay scored 21 points, while Marreese Speights added a season-high 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Grizzlies. But the post-game accolades went to the Memphis reserves. Mike Conley, who along with Marc Gasol had 15 points apiece, said the bench play gave the Memphis starters better legs as they pulled away at the end. "They let me and Marc rest until basically the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter," Conley said. "They actually extended the lead when they were out there. Thats what we need out of them. When you have that kind of output from the bench, that makes it easier on the starters coming in to sustain that lead." O.J. Mayo added 13 points for Memphis, which won its second straight. David West led the Pacers with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 13 rebounds. Danny Granger had 19 points, and Dahntay Jones added 10 as a reserve, primarily on 7 of 8 from the free throw line. The teams were tied at 86 with 4:30 left, but Memphis outscored Indiana 12-6 the rest of the way, including converting 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch. Conley credited the extra rest the starters got before entering in the fourth quarter. "It gives you a little more energy and you are able to play harder for a longer period of time," Conley said. "The most important time is the fourth quarter. The last four or five minutes of the game is where its crunch time and you have to make the right decisions. Having your legs is a big part of that." Indiana controlled the boards 48-37, including 16 offensive rebounds, helping the Pacers to 17 second-chance points. But Indiana committed 15 turnovers and shot only 39 per cent, including Paul George missing 11 of his 13 shots, and Roy Hibbert going 1 for 7. "The biggest difference was the willingness to win," Pacers guard Darren Collison said. "They had a little bit more will than us. They wanted it more, and thats something we just cant have." The halftime score of 47-47 was representative of a first half that had 11 lead changes and 12 ties. Memphhis held an early seven-point lead, but once the Pacers pulled back into it, the game settled into a tight matchup.dddddddddddd The Pacers biggest lead of the half was five points. Granger had 11 points and West 10 to lead Indiana. Speights had 14 points, hitting six of his eight shots in the half, finishing the night 8 of 13. As he has in recent games, Speights, acquired from Philadelphia in a three-team trade Jan. 4, provided the early spark. "I know all the games are going to start off like that," Speights said. "I just go out there with a little more energy and try to get on the boards early and start the momentum." Neither team shot particularly well, and the Pacers might have extended their advantage a little more in the half, but they were an uncharacteristic 11 of 21 from the free-throw line, part of Indiana going 26 for 37. "I think that was a big reason we lost the game honestly," Granger said of the missed first-half free throws. "... We should have been up eight or seven or six or five going into halftime if we make half of those." Eight turnovers compared to three by Memphis didnt help Indiana either. West already had nine rebounds and George eight rebounds as the Pacers held a 28-19 advantage on the glass, including nine offensive rebounds leading to 12 second-chance points. The game remained close in the third was tied at 73 heading into the fourth. The teams were still even at 77 when Memphis scored nine unanswered points for its biggest lead of the game, 86-77 on Gays three-point play with 7:04 left. Indiana answered with a 9-0 run to make it 86-86, the 17th tie of the game. "It took defence. Its always about defence," Gasol said. "We had key stops and key rebounds and we were able to make shots and our free throws." Notes: The game featured of matchup of all-star centres Gasol and Hibbert, both of whom were selected as reserves. ... Memphis G Tony Allen returned after missing three games with a sore hip and knee. ... Pacers F/C Jeff Foster returned after missing 13 games with a sore lower back. ... Memphis F Dante Cunningham was ejected in the third quarter after getting a pair of technicals for arguing two different foul calls. ... Memphis has four straight wins in the series. ... The loss was the first time this season Indiana has lost consecutive games. The Pacers were coming off a 97-87 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday. ' ' '

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- A few drivers, like Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano, raced onto the track to get in their qualifying sessions. Others waited, some nearly 10 minutes, before heading out for the first time. There were long stretches with almost no activity followed by mad scrambles to get runs in before time ran out. Cars raced past each other at close to a 100 mph difference. No doubt, this first round of NASCARs new knockout qualifying was a little strange and will take some getting used to. Brad Keselowski earned the first Sprint Cup pole under NASCARs new format, edging Joey Logano with a track-record top speed of 139.384 mph at Phoenix International Raceway on Friday. "Its a lot more nerve-racking," Keselowski said. "Usually a pretty good rule of thumb is that If its more nerve-racking for the drivers, its a lot more fun for our fans and partners and all those things, and thats a good thing. Im more interested in feedback from our fans to see if they liked it." Keselowski was one of the first drivers to go out in the first session and finished behind Logano. He trumped his teammate in the shorter, second session to earn his fourth career pole and a spot on the front row for Sundays 312-mile race. Jamie McMurray qualified third, defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was fourth and Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start fifth, next to Greg Biffle. "The qualifying format was before because I felt like I was one of those guys it was exciting for me because I wasnt in, I made another run, I got in," McMurray said. "The excitement was there." NASCAR made numerous changes for this season, including a tweaked qualifying process in an effort to liven up what had become a monotonous part of race weekend. Instead of going out one at a time, the entire field gets a 30-minute session to post their fastest lap, with the top 12 moving on to a 10-minute second round. On bigger tracks, the qualifying will have three sessions, with the field cut to 24 then 12. NASCAR got a glimpse of the new system at Daytona last week, but it didnt last long; the Nationwide series was able to get in one round before rain washed out the rest of the qualifying and for the Truck Series. The Daytona 500 didnt use the new qualifying process, so Phoenix was the inaugural go-round. No one knew quite what to expect and there was a bit of concern about drivers intentionally blocking each other to prevent fast lap times, something NASCAR officials planned to keep an eye on. Instead, the action on the track was sparse for long stretches, with some drivers racing out to get qualifying laps in right away while several others waited several minutes to get their first lap in. One issue while there were multiple cars on the track were the speeds. NASCAR decided against allowing teams to have cool down units in their pit stalls, so most of the drivers in the field put in one fast lap and one that was much slower to cool their engines, creating differences of up to 100 mph between the cars. "Weve got a really good dialogue with all of our competitors," said Robin Pemberton, NASCARs vice-president for competition and racing development. "They dont want to force us to do something thats wrong. They weigh in because they think things can be better. Its our job to take and balance all that out and remove the agenda part of that a team may or may not have. Right now, its working pretty good." For the first session, Logano and Keselowski were at the front of the pack along pit road -- by random drawing -- and raced to get out in front on the track so theyd have a clear path. Logano put up the fastest time early and Keselowski was right behind him in second. Despite teams coming in for adjustments -- one crewmember was allowed to come over the wall to make minor changes -- those two stayed out front for the entire first session. For the final session, Keselowski put up his fast time relatively early in the 10-minute window and swapped places with Logano for the pole. "Unfortunately, we won the wrong one," Logano said. "We won the first one and our teammate got the second one, but either way we both had a chance to win something. He just got the trophy to take the pictures with." wholesale jerseys .J. -- A Super Bowl hero is returning to the New York Giants. nfl jerseys china . BOSTON -- With security tight along the 26.2-mile route, tens of thousands of runners set out from the starting line at the Boston Marathon on Monday in a "Boston Strong" show of resilience a year after the deadly bombing. "I showed up, Im back, and I am going to finish what I didnt finish last year," said Mary Cunningham, 50, of St. Petersburg, Fla., who was stopped a mile short of the finish line by the explosions last year. The two pressure-cooker bombs that went off near the finish line killed three people and wounded more than 260. Police were deployed in force along the course, with helicopters circling above and bomb-sniffing dogs checking through trash cans. Officers were posted on roofs. Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray said it had been a long and difficult year. "Were taking back our race," he said. "Were taking back the finish line." A total of 35,755 athletes were registered to run -- the second-largest field in its history, with many coming to show support for the event and the city that was traumatized by the attack on its signature sporting event. "I cant imagine the number of emotions that are going to be there," said Katie ODonnell, who was stopped less than a mile from the end last year. "I think Im going to start crying at the starting line, and Im not sure Ill stop until I cross the finish line." Buses bearing the message "Boston Strong" dropped off runners at the starting line in the town of Hopkinton. A banner on one building read: "You are Boston Strong. You Earned This." The most obvious change for the 118th running of the worlds oldest annual marathon was the heavy security. Nevertheless, many found the atmosphere to be calm and friendly. "I think everybody is being very pleasant," said Jean Bertschman, a Hopkinton resident who comes to watch the start of the marathon most years and had never seen anything close to this level of security. Spectators went through tight seccurity checkpoints before being allowed near Hopkinton Common.dddddddddddd Runners had to use clear plastic bags for their belongings, and fans hoping to watch near the finish line were encouraged to leave strollers and backpacks behind. More than 100 cameras were installed along the route in Boston, and race organizers said 50 or so observation points would be set up around the finish line to monitor the crowd. Runner Scott Weisberg, 44, from Birmingham, Ala., said he had trouble sleeping the night before. "With everything that happened last year, I cant stop worrying about it happening again. I know the chances are slim to none, but I cant help having a nervous pit in my stomach," Weisberg said. Race organizers expanded the field from its recent cap of 27,000 to make room for more than 5,000 runners who were still on the course last year at the time of the explosions, for friends and relatives of the victims, and for those who made the case that they were "profoundly impacted" by the attack. Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia and Kenyas Rita Jeptoo, who crossed the finish line on Boylston Street about three hours before the explosions, returned to defend their championships. Desisa came to Boston last fall to donate his first-place medal to the city as a gesture of support. Jeptoo, who also won the race in 2006, said she is hoping for a third victory -- and one she can enjoy. "It was very difficult to be happy. People were injured and children died," she said of last years marathon. "If Im going to win again, I hope I can be happier and to show people, like I was supposed to last year." ALBANY, N.Y. -- Any chance the St. Johns IceCaps had of stealing a second American Hockey League road playoff victory was ruined by penalties. The Albany Devils were awarded nine power-play opportunities Saturday night and cashed in three of them to defeat the IceCaps 4-2. After the IceCaps 2-1 victory Friday night, the best-of-five series is tied at one game apiece as the teams move to St. Johns, N.L., for the remaining games. "We have to stay more disciplined," said defenceman Brenden Kichton, who scored both St. Johns goals. "Youre not going to win hockey games when youre in the box, but we to have credit them. They did a good job on their power play. They got three goals out of it, and thats not how we play to win." The IceCaps, who allowed the Devils only two power-play chances in Game 1, still got out of Albany with a split. "Its a five-game series here, as everybody says, and we were able to get the one game in here," St. Johns coach Keith McCambridge said. "We would have really liked to get this game. Well have a chance to refocus here and get ourselves back in the right direction for Wednesday." The Devils, buoyed by the largest home crowd at 8,026 in Albanys 21-year AHL history, made their potential path to the next round a little more negotiable. A loss would have forced Albany to sweep three games at St. Johns in order to advance. "Going into that building and having to win all three would definitely be pretty tough," Devils coach Rick Kowalsky said. "We said before, you cant sit here and talk about a must win. We talked about individually and as a team trying to be better than we were last night and realizing that I felt we grew as a team just in that short 60 minutes." Stefan Matteau, Mattias Tedenby and Scott Timmins had Albanys power-play goals. Kelly Zajac assisted on two of them, winning face-offs both times on the St. Johns half of the ice. Tedenby snapped a 2-2 tie at 8:08 of the second. Zajac won a draw just outside the IceCaps blue-line and skated in a 2-on-1 with Tedenby, who took the pass and beat St. Johns goaltender Michael Hutchinson from in close. Timmins got an insurance goal with 9:59 remaining in the third. "We would have liked not to be on the short end of the penalties for a good majority of the night," McCambridge said. "Weve got to make sure we are in control. Weve got to make sure we realize where we are in the game and try to keep it 5-on-5." St. Johns had only four power-play opportunities. Kichton first goal bounced in off the skate of Devils defenceman Jon Merrill. He also converted on a power play early in the second period, capitalizing when Albany defenceman Seth Helgeson fell at the blue-line. Keith Kinkaid, who gave up a soft goal with 23.1 seconds remaining Friday night, got his first professional victory in goal. Both he and Hutchinson made 30 saves. He scored 25 points and the Suns made almost 57 per cent of their shots through three quarters Saturday night in a 105-95 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats. It has been an off-season of change for Wally Buono. The B.C. Lions GM and vice-president of football operations has been busy revamping his roster following the clubs heart-breaking West Division final loss to the Calgary Stampeders. Buono dealt such veterans as defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell (to Toronto) and backup quarterback Mike Reilly (to Edmonton), released others like receiver Arland Bruce III and cornerback Byron Parker while re-signing more than 20 players, including quarterback Travis Lulay, offensive linemen Jovan Oliafoye and Ben Archibald and linebacker Solomon Elimimian in an attempt to earn B.C. its second Grey Cup title in three seasons. But no move was more significant than the trading of 14-year veteran slotback Geroy Simon -- the CFLs all-time receiving yards leader -- to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Jan. 24 for receiver Justin Harper and a 2014 third-round pick. Simon, who spent 12 seasons with the Lions, needs just 29 catches to break Ben Cahoons CFL record of 1,017 career receptions. Simon, 37, missed five games last year with hamstring problems, limiting him to 54 catches for 700 yards and two touchdowns. It marked the first time in 10 seasons Simon hadnt cracked the 1,000-yard plateau. "For us, 2013 is a time of change," Buono said during a CFL conference call Wednesday. "The change, obviously when you consider the fact we traded Geroy Simon, is a significant thing. "Hes a class act and were going to miss him but at the end of the day my job is to make sure we field the most competitive team. The off-season has been very very very busy but I think it has been very very positive." Buono has never shied away from making tough personnel decisions. He released Hall of Fame slotback Alan Pitts following the 2000 season in Calgary and also cut receiver Jason Clermont, twice the CFLs top Canadian with B.C., after the 08 campaign. Its that eye for talent and knack for knowing when a veterans best days are behind him that have helped Buono register a CFL-record 254 career coaching victories and record-tying five Grey Cup titles. Buono has also been named the leagues coach of the year four times, second only to Don Matthews, who had five. Buono said even if B.C. had successfully defended its 2011 Grey Cup title, changes wouldve been made this off-season. "You cant allow everybody to age all at the same time," Buono said. "Its a tough business, we all know that. "But my job is to provide (Lions head coach Mike Benevides) with what he wants and his job is to win football games. At the end of the day I think we put ourselves in that position." Benevides, who replaced Buono as Lions coach after 11 campaign, agreed. "It was a tremendously disappointing result, theres no doubt about that," he said. "But those changes wouldve occurred anyways." One player still on Buonos radar is receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux, who played with B.C. in 2009-10 before joining the NFLs Minnesota Vikings. Arceneaux was waived Wednesday by the New York Jets but Buono said the move was expected and Arceneaux, 25, would re-sign with the NFL club Thursday. "Manny is a player I have high regard for and I know this organization does to," Buono said. "Weve stayed in constant touch . . . and he lets me know how things are going. "We wish him the best but if he was available wed have a definite interest." But its not as if B.C.s roster needs revamping. The Lions posted a league-best 13-5 record last year but their season came to an abrupt halt with a 34-29 home loss to Calgary in the West final. And that was a bitter pill to swallow for Benevides, a Toronto native and the CFLs lone Canadian-born head coach. "It (2012 season) was a dream come true for a Canadian kid born in this country who now gets to be a head coach in this great league," Benevides said. "The players did everything I asked of them. "Unfortunately on the last day . . . we werent able to win that last game and thats probably the hardest part.dddddddddddd But you have to look at the entire body of work and Im proud of the organization and players." Benevides coaching staff returns relatively intact as offensive co-ordinator Jacques Chapdelaine will also work directly with the teams receivers after receivers coach Travis Moore didnt return. Jarious Jackson, Lulays backup during B.C.s 2011 Grey Cup run who earned another ring last year with Toronto, is also back with the Lions but as their quarterbacks coach. Its a move Lulay, the 2011 CFL outstanding player, approves. "Hes a guy Ive run the gamut with in terms of playing the position and to get Jarious back is something Im excited about." Lulay said. "He started three of four games last year and threw a TD pass in the Grey Cup which was the last game played in our league, so it doesnt get fresher than that." Lulay said continuity in the Lions coaching staff is pivotal heading into the 2013 season. "Its important from a players perspective knowing youre going to battle with guys on the staff youve been there before with," he said. "Much of the staff is here that we won a championship with in 2011." One of Buonos biggest off-season moves was re-signing Lulay, 29, to a contract extension reportedly worth $450,000 annually, making him one of the CFLs highest-paid players. Lulay had a career-best 66.5 per cent completion average last year, passing for 4,231 yards with 27 TD tosses and just 10 interceptions. Even without either Simon or Bruce III, B.C.s receiving corps is rich in Canadian talent with the likes of Akeem Foster, Shawn Gore, Marco Iannuzzi and Paris Jackson. Winnipeg native Andrew Harris is also a dual at running back -- rushing for 1,112 yards last year while adding 75 catches for 718 yards and four TDs. The return of Oliafoye -- the CFLs top lineman last year -- Archibald and veteran centre Angus Reid will certainly help keep Lulay upright. Thats good, too, considering Lulay was hampered with back issues during B.C.s recent mini-camp after enduring a late-season shoulder ailment in 2012. And with the start of training camp less than a month away, Lulay says hes healthy. "I dont know where the back thing came from . . . it was a 48-hour thing and has been fine ever since," he said. "The shoulder feels great, obviously it did slow me down a little bit at the end of last season . . . but physically, I feel great." The return of linebackers Elimimian and Adam Bighill (re-signed to an extension in off-season) anchors a defence that last season was the CFLs best. Benevides said Elimimian and Bighill will combine with veteran Anton McKenzie to give defensive co-ordinator Rich Stubler plenty of options. "Theyre going to be extremely dynamic and used in multiple ways," Benevides said. "Its going to be really, really great for us to have that." The return of veteran defensive backs Dante Marsh, Lin-J Shell and Korey Banks gives a rugged secondary continuity. But safety Cauchy Muamba joined his brother, Henoc, in Winnipeg as a free agent. Benevides said veteran J.R. LaRose will get a shot at replacing Muamba. "He has the (first) right of refusal right now," Benevides said. "Hes going to have to make sure he makes strides to take that job in training camp." Last season, Benevides asked his players to perform hard in training camp but plans to take a different approach when veterans report next month. "Im really going to try to make it about teaching and making sure we empower our players to understand what it is thats expected of them," Benevides said. "Were going to try to employ more teaching to minimize some of the contact and protect the players, not only from injury but just try to keep them fresh so we start the season strong and fast. "I think ultimately what we are is teachers so if we use the time to teach and get these guys prepared to play fast well be better for it." ' ' '

Wheelers goal during a breakaway in the third period against Sabres goalie Ryan Miller proved to be the winner as the Winnipeg Jets beat Buffalo 3-1 on Monday. "The scouting report has kind of been that Millers unbeatable, but if youre going to beat him, youve got to try to go over the shoulder," Wheeler said. "You always feel fortunate scoring on a goalie like him. Hes probably the best in the league right now. Youve got to take a little bit of luck out of that, but it felt good it went our way tonight." The win gives Winnipeg a little breathing room in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The eighth-place Jets now have 72 points, three more than ninth-place Washington, who have two games in hand. Andrew Ladd and Chris Thorburn also scored for the Jets, while Bryan Little tallied three assists and Ondrej Pavelec made 23 saves. Corey Tropp had the only goal for Buffalo, which had been unbeaten in eight games heading into the contest. Miller faced 31 shots in the loss and is 6-1-1 in his past eight games. It was the last of an eight-game homestand for the Jets, who went 5-1-2 during that span. Winnipeg retains eighth spot in the Eastern Conference with a 32-27-8 record. Buffalo is four points back at 30-28-8. Ladd opened the games scoring when he banged in a rebound at the front of the net at 13:45 of the first period. The Sabres swarmed the Jets zone during two power plays close to each other in the second period, but couldnt convert. But with just 35 seconds left in the middle frame, right-winger Tropp scored his second goal of the season during a goal-mouth scramble to tie things up. Wheeler made it 2-1 after he took a pass from Little near centre ice, skated in alone on Miller and fired a high shot over his out-stretched glove at 8:02 of the third. Little knew he was under a bit of pressure to get the puck to Wheeler as he was busting free. "I know if I dont get it to him Im going to hear about it for a while," Little said. "He did a great job of finding that hole. I had to make the pass pretty quick `cause it was going to close up. He made no mistake. It was a great goal." It was Littles first three-point game since Dec. 26, 2008. Wheeler has five goals and 15 points in his last eight games. Miller said he didnt see how the play developed. "Im just watching the guys to see if theres any chance of danger," he said. "Obviously, I saw (Wheeler) coming for a while there. Its just one of those ones where I thought I had him set up pretty good and I felt it just right at the edge of my glove. "Just not probably enough on him taking away some space and he made a nice play." Sabres coach Lindy Ruff wasnt impressed with Wheelers goal. "We made a big mistake in the third and it was a pretty tight game," Ruff said. "To give Wheeler a breakaway at that time of the game was bad judgment on our part by our defence. We had one guy joining and slipped in behind our other defenceman." Thorburn gave his team some breathing room at 10:54 when he skated around defenceman Robyn Regehr and slid a low shot under Miller off his own rebound. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Lleyton Hewitt beat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships on Thursday. The No. 3 seed leads the career series with Baghdatis 3-2, winning their first match since 2010 when Baghdatis had to withdraw with an injured shoulder. Hewitt won his 29th career title in Brisbane this year. He needed 91 minutes to finally beat Baghdatis for the first time outside of Australia and continue his strong start this year. "Marcos, hes always a tough competitor, and this type of court suits his style as well," Hewitt said. "He hits the ball hard and flat out there, and if hes making a lot of first serves its not easy. I just sort of bided my time out there and took my chances. Had to fight hard early in the second set to hold serve and got a bit of momentum after that." Hewitt will play American Michael Russell on Friday. Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat second-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-6 (2), 6-4, serving up 19 aces and losing only six points off his serve. He will play American Jack Sock. Earlier, American qualifier Alex Kuznetsov upset eighth-seeded Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) to reach his first ATP quarterfinal. He will play fourth-seeded Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan, who beat American qualifier Denis Kudla 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Hewitt could join Roger Federer (932) and Rafael Nadal (669) as the third active player with 600 match victories if he wins the title in Memphis.dddddddddddd. Baghdatis had the benefit of an opening match here in Memphis, while Hewitt had a bye. Baghdatis also opened the match serving well with four aces, and he broke Hewitt in back-to-back games to go up 5-1 and serve out for the first set. Then Hewitt settled down and faced only one more break point in the final two sets. That came in the first game of the second set, and the former No. 1 took advantage of Baghdatis double-faulting four times and struggling with his serve. Baghdatis said he was very aggressive early. "After having a break point in the first game of the second set, I stopped playing, stopped playing aggressive and he started getting to points and rallies," Baghdatis said. "He was dictating the rallies and basically thats it. Thats all. Couldnt get back to where I started from." Hewitt said he needed a bit of time to adjust in his first match at The Racquet Club. He also started mixing up his serve as well. "He was taking a swipe at all of my serves early on so I just had to find a way to hang in there more than anything," Hewitt said. "Just the pace of the court, the ball, just try and find that rhythm out there." Kuznetsov, who turned pro in 2004 and just turned 27, finally won the seventh match of his career in his 38th match. JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Brendan Steele and Jason Dufner at least can make a name for themselves in the PGA Championship. Until that big trophy is handed out Sunday, however, this major remains very much a mystery. How will they handle the pressure of the final round? Can they safely navigate through the four-hole finish, considered among the most brutal of any course? And just who are these guys, anyway? Rarely has a major championship contained so much inexperience at the top going into the final round. Steele is believed to be the first rookie since John Daly in the 1991 PGA to play in the final group of a major. Steele, already a winner this year on the PGA Tour and No. 121 in the world, showed remarkable poise Saturday by overcoming a double bogey on the seventh hole. He ran off four birdies over his next seven holes, and not even a safe bogey on the 18th could take away from a 4-under 66 to give him a share of the lead. He is tied with Jason Dufner, who, at 34, is still looking for his first PGA Tour win. Dufner, stoic as ever with a chunk of tobacco jutting out from his bottom lip, atoned for a pair of three-putt bogeys on the back nine with back-to-back birdies. He only missed one green in the third round and shot 68. They were at 7-under 203, one shot clear of Keegan Bradley, a 25-year-old rookie who also won earlier this year. Bradley, playing in the final group, opened with a double bogey, which might have been expected given his inexperience. He also bounced back with remarkable resiliency, playing bogey-free on the back nine and rallying for a 69. Now comes the hard part. Never mind that only one of the top 10 players in the world is within four shots -- Steve Stricker, who shot 69 and was three behind. Or that Tiger Woods, defending champion Martin Kaymer and British Open champion Darren Clarke all missed the cut. Or that U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy blew up in a round of 74 and was out of contention. Atlanta Athletic Club is the kind of course that can take shots away without notice. Jim Furyk discovered that by putting three balls into the water on the last four holes for a pair of double bogeys. "Wishy-washy play is not going to get it done," Steele said. Right behind them is plenty of experience. Scott Verplank, who at 47 can become the second-oldest major champion, rattled in a 50-foot putt across the 17th green for a most unlikely birdie, then laid up on the par-4 18th and escaped with par by making an 18-foot putt for a 69. He was only two shots behind. Stricker, at No. 5 the highest-ranked American in the world ranking, took only 10 putts on the front nine when his round could have gone south quickly. He steadied himself with a solid up-and-down for par on the final hole. "Everybody is going to be dealing with their nerves and the pressure of trying to win," Stricker said. "I think its who can keep it together the best and be patient and play some good golf." That might be to the newcomers advantage. Plus, the golf course is proving to be difficult enough to get their attention. "It could be a good thing. Might maybe make me a little more relaxed knowing that everybody is kind of in the same boat struggling with those emotions and thoughts and the mentality of trying to win a major," Dufner said. "I just feel like if youre playing good, you should be confident. And obviously, Ive been playing really well for these three rounds." Dufner is playing his best at the end. Through three rounds, he has played the last four holes in 3 under -- with no bogeys. Compared with the field average, thats the equivalent of picking up seven shots on the field. Besides, theres not much major championship experience behind them. Only two players among the top 12 on the leaderboard have won majors -- Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and David Toms, who won the PGA Championship on this course 10 years ago. They were at 2-under 208, five shots behind. Also in that group was Adam Scott, coming off a win at Firestone last week. He struggled to a 70, but has not lost hope. "You can make up six shots in the last four holes," said Scott, who was six behind when he finished. "So yeah, I think you can make up six shots in the last round." The final round is so much up in the air that even Lee Westwood, desperate to finally add a major to an otherwise stellar career, remains in the mix despite one bad hole that spoiled his afternoon. A tee shot that just climbed into a bunker in the 14th fairway led to a three-putt double bogey on the 14th. He still managed a 70 and was six shots behind. Luke Donald, the No. 1 player in the world who also is without a major, got to within one shot of the lead only to find the water on the 18th hole and close with a double bogey, leaving him seven shots behind. "It does offer some birdie opportunities, and you can get it under par," Donald said. "But there are some tough holes out there that youve got to weather, and the champion at the end of the week is probably going to have played those tough ones the best." The last player to win a major in his first try was Ben Curtis in the 2003 British Open at Royal St. Georges. The last American to make a major his first PGA Tour win was Shaun Micheel at the PGA Championship in 2003 at Oak Hill. "Its a great week for me just to be in the field," said Steele, won the Texas Open a week after the Masters. "To have a chance to actually win in my first major is really something special." Bradley, the nephew of LPGA Tour great Pat Bradley, won the Byron Nelson Championship in May and contended last week in Firestone. When he started with a double bogey, he didnt panic. "It really did not faze me that much," Bradley said. "My goal was to under-react to everything that happened out there today, good or bad. And you know, I took it pretty well. I knew that it was a very important time for me to stay calm and stay patient, or else it could have got away from me. And I did, which was good." Saturday was the kind of day when it could have gotten away from a lot of players. Despite more muggy temperatures, the rookies managed to keep their composure. Anders Hansen of Denmark, who has never seriously contended in a major, also kept it together with a 70 and was at 3-under 207, along with Pebble Beach winner D.A. Points, who went nine holes without making a par but still shot 71. The toughest part about Sunday might be killing time until the late afternoon tee time. That shouldnt be a problem for Steele, who spent the first three months getting the last tee time on tour because of his rookie status. Then again, that was another reminder of how far he has come already. Bradley thought back to the Nationwide Tour last year when he and Steele were in contention at a tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. "There was nobody around. We were just out there playing," Bradley said. "If we would have said wed be in a couple of the final groups on Sunday at the PGA, I think we both would have kind of laughed at each other." DeAngelo Williams Jersey . NEW ORLEANS -- The Toronto Raptors followed their worst quarter of the season with their best. Linas Kleiza and DeMar DeRozan scored 21 points apiece and Toronto rallied to beat the New Orleans Hornets 95-84 on Wednesday night. The Raptors, who trailed 69-62 after tying a season low for points in a quarter with 11 in the third, broke loose for 33 in the fourth -- matching a season best for any period. They hit their first eight shots and took control by scoring 22 points in the first 4:22. "It was all on us," DeRozan said. "They werent doing anything to stop us or get us off. We knew we were going to put it together in the fourth quarter." Kleiza tied a career high with five three-pointers off the bench, including three in the fourth. Leandro Barbosa, another reserve, added 15 points. The Raptors, unable to finish in an 88-85 loss at Houston on Tuesday, made almost everything down the stretch against the Hornets. The win snapped a five-game road losing streak. "We moved the ball very well," Barbosa said. "That was the difference between last night and tonight. Were getting better and were growing." Marco Belinelli had 20 points for the Hornets, who missed 13 consecutive shots in the fourth quarter and lost for the 16th straight time after trailing at the half. Chris Kaman added 17 points and 10 rebounds. "Our defence just went downhill," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "We couldnt guard the ball." The game turned quickly at the start of the fourth after Toronto missed 17 of 21 shots in the third, getting outscored 23-11. DeRozan scored on a floater, Kleiza drilled a three-pointer and Barbosa converted a transition layup to tie the score right away, prompting a New Orleans timeout with 10:43 left. The Raptors did not cool down. Kleiza hit another three on their next possession for a 72-71 lead. Jerryd Bayless responded to a three by Belinelli with a three the next time down the court. After Belinelli sank another three, Barbosa hit a mid-range shot, Bayless made two free throws and Barbosa made a three from the corner to give Toronto an 82-77 lead with 7:38 left. Kleiza finished off the Hornets with his fifth three-pointer, a 25-footer, to put Toronto ahead 89-81 with 3:25 left. The final margin was Torontos largest lead of the night. "These are the games we are supposed to win," DeRozan said. "We are still in the hunt. Weve got four home games and have to take advantage of that. Once we start doing that, things will start looking better." The Hornets turned a 51-46 halftime deficit into a 69-62 lead by limiting the Raptors to one basket in the last seven minutes of the third quarter. New Orleans went ahead for the first time since the first quarter, 60-58, on Trevor Arizas layup. The Hornets extended the advantage to seven when reserve Solomon Jones scored back-to-back baskets in the final minute, getting the ball to fall in after rolling around the rim both times. Torontos shots hit nothing but net to start the fourth quarter. DeRozan, who sent out a two-word tweet with an expletive 43 minutes after he was benched for the fourth quarter against Houston, was in a much better frame of mind Wednesday. He played all 12 minutes of the fourth against New Orleans, scoring seven points. "When you are a competitor and youre losing, it definitely gets to you," he said. "I didnt mean any harm by it. Everybody has moments like that. You live and you learn." Jose Calderon sank all four of his shots, including a pair of threes to give Toronto a 29-25 lead by the end of the first quarter. New Orleans point guard Jarrett Jack, coming off the bench for the sixth consecutive game after missing seven in a row with sore knees, struggled for almost all of the first half. He hit the backboard on the fly with a three-point attempt and shot an airball from 17 feet that Kaman grabbed for a layup. Jack scored his only baskets of the half on back-to-back layups in the last 10.5 seconds and finished 3 of 12 from the field. "Im going to put this one on my shoulders squarely," he said. "This team looks to me for a lot, and I have to be the captain. I want to be that guy. I want the ball." MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The intensity of the Memphis Grizzlies returned and so did the character of a team that has struggled the past two weeks. The result was a 107-102 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night, keeping the Grizzlies in the hunt for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. Zach Randolph had 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Marc Gasol added 20 points and 14 rebounds as Memphis stayed within a game of the Phoenix Suns, who hold the eighth spot. The Suns defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 94-88 also on Wednesday night. "The headline of the day is the Grizzlies got the win, much needed win," said guard Tony Allen, whose defensive intensity in the second half helped Memphis force nine Miami turnovers leading to 20 Grizzlies points. "We want to continue to polish what weve got going, trying to race into the playoffs." LeBron James led the Heat with 37 points, connecting on 14 of 23 shots, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Rashard Lewis scored 17, and Chris Bosh finished with 13 points. Mario Chalmers scored 12 points for the Heat. The loss, coupled with the Indiana Pacers 104-102 win at Milwaukee, dropped the Heat into the second spot in the Eastern Conference. Mike Conley finished with a team-high 26 points and handed out six assists for Memphis. Courtney Lee added 18 points. The scoring of Randolph and Gasol contributed to a 60-30 advantage in the paint for Memphis. The Grizzles outrebounded the Heat 41-27, who were without reserve frontline players Greg Oden, Udonis Haslem and Chris Andersen, along with second-leading scorer Dwyane Wade. "Obviously, those are key guys out against a team you need big bodies against," James said of the absences, and noting the double-doubles by Randolph and Gasol. "I thought for the most part, we played a pretty good game to win. The fourth quarter got a little away from us." The fourth quarter was where the intensity of Allen that had been missing in recent weeks emerged. The defensive leader of the Grizzlies acknowledged being in a funk recently, but Allen, who guarded James much of the game, returned to his frenetic ways. "When Tonys being Tony, when hes making the big plays defensively, doing the little things offensively, he picks everybody upp," Conley said.dddddddddddd"He doesnt have to say a word. You can see the energy." The teams were tied at 91 after Lewis 3-pointer was topped with a foul when Gasol bumped him. The ensuing free throw tied the game with 5:43 left. Memphis turned up the defence at that point and scored in its transition game. Conleys 3-pointer with just over 4 minutes left gave Memphis a 100-93 lead, causing Miami coach Erik Spoelstra to call timeout. The Grizzlies got another turnover on the next possession and Conley converted another 3-pointer to give Memphis its first double-digit lead at 103-93, completing a 12-2 run with 3:34 left and sealing the game for Memphis. "We gave up a couple of leak outs," Bosh said. "All it takes is one or two times, you dont get guys back. They got it up to an eight-point lead. In a game like this, thats like 20 against a team like this." There werent many misses to start the game. The teams combined to hit 11 of their first 12 shots. Memphis would end up starting 10 of 11, while the Heat were 6 of 7 from beyond the arc, and Randolph hit all eight of his shots in the quarter. By the end of the first quarter, the teams were 27 of 37. "Just trying to be aggressive," Randolph said of the perfection. "You know, I hit shots and guys kept coming to me." Despite Randolphs accuracy, the Heat carried a 58-54 lead into halftime. Lees 3-pointer at the close of the third period originally was ruled too late. But after review the call was overturned and the teams entered the final quarter tied at 80. "First of all, the turnovers were pick-6s," Spoelstra said of the fourth quarter. "They had more than a handful of those. "It was a tale of two halves offensively. That probably as much as anything got us in trouble." NOTES: James connected on a 4-point play early in the third quarters when he was fouled at the top of the key by Grizzlies F James Johnson. ... The Heat entered the game 27-2 when James scores at least 37 points. ... Randolphs eight field goals in the first quarter tied a franchise mark held by Mike Bibby. ... CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Kemba Walker outdueled Kyrie Irving and the Charlotte Bobcats earned their first win of the season. Walker won the battle of small, but speedy point guards, scoring 23 points and handing out seven assists to help the Bobcats beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 90-84 on Friday night in their home opener. Walker hit a 3-pointer over Irving with 58 seconds left to break a tie. The Cavaliers had two chances to tie, but Josh McRoberts came up with a steal and Jarrett Jack had an air-ball on a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Gerald Henderson added two free throws in the final 11 seconds to make it a two-possession game and help seal the win. Bismack Biyombo, who filled in for injured centre Al Jefferson, came up big for Charlotte scoring 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. CJ Miles had 22 points, and Tristan Thompson added 21 for the Cavaliers. Irving had 16 points on 7-of-17 shooting, but was held to one point in the fourth quarter. He attempted only three shots in the fourth and missed them all. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist finished with 15 points and six rebounds for the Bobcats. Henderson had 10 points on 2-of-10 shooting. The Bobcats led throughout the first half and was up 54-49 behind 12 points from Walker and eight apiece from rookie Cody Zeller and reserve Ramon Sessions. Zeller, the No. 4 overall pick in the draft, outplayed No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett in his first game in front of the home crowd. The 7-footer showed terrific athleticism getting up and down the court and knocked down two mid-range jumpers while finishing with nine points and five rebounds. Bennett failed to score in 12 minutes and had four fouls. Zeller got a chance to guard his older brother Tyler -- and even deflected one of his shots. The Bobcats played without Jefferson, their top free agent acquisition this off-season. The 6-10 centre re-aggravated his ankle in Charlottes loss at Houston on Wednesday night. Coach Steve Clifford said Jefferson will be reevaluated over the weekend. "Its significant," Clifford said of having to play without Jefferson. "Hes our best offensive player. I dont want to go crazy, but hes of the two or three best low post scorers in the league." Jeffersons absence meant the Bobcats had to change their style of play using more pick and rolls instead of pounding the ball into the low post. SHANGHAI, China -- The graceful combination of power and balance. The bounce in his step after every birdie. His name at the top of the leaderboard. For at least one round, Rory McIlroy finally looked like the former No. 1 player in the world instead of a guy who hasnt won a tournament all year. With eight birdies and hardly any stress, McIlroy opened the HSBC Champions on Thursday with a 7-under 65 for a two-shot lead over Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Jamie Donaldson. It was the first time since he won in Dubai last November that McIlroy has been in the outright lead after any round. "It felt good to be out there and in control of my golf ball," McIlroy said. Maybe it was just a coincidence that McIlroys only win of any variety was earlier this week at Mission Hills when he rallied to beat Tiger Woods in an 18-hole exhibition. That didnt hurt his confidence, though the 24-year-old from Northern Ireland pointed to other factors that have been leading him in this direction. He took a four-week break, spending most of that time in Northern Ireland with swing coach Michael Bannon and "getting back to what we used to do." He has a new driver and a golf ball that is softer, giving him more spin around the greens. And perhaps most importantly, he hasnt lost his mind or his patience during the most difficult season of his young career. "Its obviously frustrating when youve had a couple of seasons previous where youve had success, and not being able to emulate that," he said. "The way I look at it, if I have a 25-year career, nine months isnt actually that long. I wouldnt say restless, but obviously theres a point in time where youre thinking to yourself, Right, come on, lets get this back on track. But Ive tried to stay as patient as possible." More patience is required against a strong field at Sheshan International for this World Golf Championship. Fernandez-Castano is coming off his first win of the year last week at the BMW Masters. The group at 4-under 68 included U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, former Masters champion Bubba Watson and 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, playing as though last season never ended. Another shot behind were Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey and Graeme McDowell, who remains second on the European Tour money list with hopes of catching Henrik Stenson. The timing was crucial for McIlroy. Not only has he failed to win a tournament, he is at No. 62 in the Race to Dubai with only two tournaments remaining to get into the top 60 and qualify for the season-ending World Tour Championship in Dubai. McIlroy won the money title a year ago. "Its only 18 holes. Its only one round of golf," McIlroy said. "But its definitely the way I wanted and needed to start, keeping in mind that I obviously want to play myself into Dubai and try to pick up my first win of the season, as well." British Open champion Phil Mickelson had a chance to join McIlroy in the lead until it all went wrong. One shot behind with two holes to play, Mickelson hit two wedges into the water fronting the par-5 eighth green and took a quadruple-bogey 9. His second wedge landed some 30 feet beyond the pin and had so much spin that it raced off the green and down the bank into the water. He hit another shot into the water on No. 9, and followed that with a brave shot to 2 feet to escape with only a bogey. He fell back to a 71. Spieth, who went from no status at the start of the year to a spot in the Presidents Cup and No. 20 in the world, didnt arrive until Monday and has been battling jet lag this week after his first trip to China. He was 2-over through eight holes, and then played 6-under the rest of the way, as if last season never ended. "I didnt really know what to expect out of the game this week, travelling over here and limited practice," he said. "But maybe it was good for me. My caddie helped me stay calm and stay positive, and once the putts started going in, we were just in our normal routine." But this day ultimately was about McIlroy. McIlroy hit a 3-wood just over the back of the par-4 16th hole and chipped to 3 feet for birdie. His 3-iron from light rough was about 20 yards short of the green on the par-5 18th, and he chipped to 5 feet for birdie. And on the par-5 second hole, another 3-iron from the rough left him 30 yards short, and he pitched that to 6 feet for birdie. The other birdie during that stretch was on No. 1, his only tee shot off line. From the rough, his 9-iron from 160 yards covered the flag and settled about 7 feet away. "Its just learning from each week and just trying to put the pieces together," McIlroy said. "A little bit of confidence from Monday, of course, but I think it was these two previous weeks just getting back into competitive play and learning what I needed to do to improve and sort of work on those things coming into this week." Hi Kerry: I was watching the Hawks-Blue Jackets game on Friday night - the game in which the Hawks scored with less than four seconds remaining to claim victory. My question concerns the face-off for that game-winning goal. Let me describe what I saw the previous play. With less than thirty seconds remaining, the puck was shot on the ice in front of the Jackets bench. Two Jacket players jumped on to the ice while two others went to the bench. The puck went just inside the Jackets zone where a Jacket defender got the puck with just over 20 seconds left. A linesman whistled down the play indicating that the Jackets had too many men on the ice and there would be a penalty with a faceoff deep in their end. As it turned out, the two referees counted the players on the ice and determined there were not too many players and NO penalty would be assigned. The face-off was still held deep in Jacket territory. The Hawks took control from the face-off and scored. My question to you is should not that face-off been held outside the Jackets blue line or at centre because the linesman blew down the play incorrectly? Since the Jackets had control of the puck when the "too many men" whistle blew, it seems to me unfair they should be penalized with the deep faceoff. Im sure the Leafs, Flyers and Devils agree with the call; however, I didnt and I am a Hawks fan. Could you please give me your take on this as I am sure it cost the Blue Jackets a very important point or two. Thanks, Doug MacLean --- Hi Doug: I have little doubt that the former Blue Jackets GM with the same name as yours would have been waiting near the officials dressing room looking for some clarification on this play as well if he still occupied thaat position.dddddddddddd The linesman clearly made an error in judgment when he determined the Blue Jackets were in violation of rule 74 - too many men on the ice - with 21.6 seconds remaining in regulation. Even though play was stopped through an officials error the face-off location in this case is determined by where the puck was last played under rule 76.2. “When the game is stopped for any reason not specifically covered in the official rules, the puck must be faced-off at a face-off spot in the zone nearest to where it was last played.” Defenceman Jack Johnson had the puck on his stick a couple of feet inside the Blue Jackets end zone when the linesman blew his whistle to stop play. As per rule 76.2 the face-off had to be conducted on the nearest end-zone face-off dot of the Blue Jackets. The only provision within the rules to relocate a face-off in the neutral zone following a linesmans error is contained in rule 81.2 - If the linesman shall have erred in calling an “icing the puck” infraction (regardless of whether either team is short-handed), the puck shall be faced-off on the center face-off dot. It is most unfortunate for the Blue Jackets that the whistle was not blown by the linesman when Jack Johnson first touched the puck when it rested on the blue line and prior to entering the defending zone. Had that been the case, the ensuing faceoff would have taken place on the neutral zone face-off dot. It might be unfair, Doug, that the Blue Jackets lost so much territorial advantage following the linesmans error but there was no option to locate the face-off in the neutral zone on this play. While the Blue Jackets did have some opportunities to get the puck out of their end zone following the face-off with 21.6 seconds remaining, I acknowledge it was a tough way for a team to lose such an important game. ST. LOUIS -- If this is Albert Pujols farewell tour with the St. Louis Cardinals, its coming on the grandest of stages. The three-time National League MVP has consistently avoided discussing free agency and was not making exceptions on the eve of the World Series. Swatting aside questions about his future not once but three times Tuesday, the big bat for the wild-card Cardinals was insistent on staying in the moment. "Lets talk about something else," Pujols said. "Lets talk about baseball. I dont concentrate about that." Contract talks can wait just a little longer for the front office, too. General manager John Mozeliak declined to estimate the odds Pujols will be batting third on opening day in 2012 for the Cardinals after building a Hall of Fame resume in his first 11 seasons in St. Louis. Mozeliak has gone all year without addressing that weighty topic after Pujols cut off negotiations on the first day of spring training, and found no reason to break the truce now. "I think at this point well table all free agents until our season ends," Mozeliak told The Associated Press. "The way Id like to look at things from tomorrow on is just enjoy the experience. "Its been a very unique ride and its time to step back and just enjoy it," he added. Pujols has been at the forefront of a team that disposed of the 102-win Phillies and Brewers, the club that finished ahead of them to win the NL Central, since completing an improbable comeback to take the wild card. Hes batting .419 with two home runs and 10 RBIs and an on-base percentage near .500 in the post-season, keeping his free agent value sky high. Hes very much on the minds of the Texas Rangers. Texas lefty C.J. Wilson, who opposes St. Louis Chris Carpenter in Game 1 Wednesday night, will be facing Pujols for the first time. Hes worried about the big bats surrounding Pujols, too. Lance Berkman provides power from the left side and Matt Holliday is regaining his stroke after missing time with a finger injury. Sixth-place hitter David Freese was the NL championship series MVP and is batting .425 with four homers and 14 RBIs overall in the post-season. "Hollidays the biggest human being Ive ever seen," the Rangers Ian Kinsler said. "Hes humongous. And youve got Pujols right in front of those guys." So theres a lot to consider. "Its an American League lineup, just like ours," Wilson said. "Its the same way I have to navigate a Yankees game or a Red Sox game or anything like that." Pujols, he knows, is the key. "I made a joke the other day, Yeah, Ill just throw it down the middle, because Im not going to tell you guys what my game plan is," Wilson said. "You cant just go there and try to be macho and throw the ball as hard as you can. "I think you guys have seen that hes hit like 500 home runs or something like, so its not really a good idea," Wilson said. Pujols is the first player in major league history to hit 30 homers, drive in 100 runs and hit .300 each of his first 10 seasons and missed by a hair of making it 11 in a row this year -- he batted .299 and had 99 RBIs. Manager Tony La Russa has always been sensitive to overpraise, but in this case cant help himself. "I said after his rookie year, hes the best player Ive ever seen, and that was 10 years ago," La Russa said. "I cant tell you what a privilege it is to watch the guy for 11 years, the way he plays the game and the way he is off the field." Maybe not the best Cardinal, though. At least not yet. Pujols rejects the notion he nearly stands as an equal with St. Louis Hall of Famer Stan Musial, who is graced with two statues outside Busch Stadium. "Stan Musials always going to be the top of this organization, the face of this organization," Pujols said. "Stan Musial is always going to be on top." Around Labour Day, Pujols thought the Cardinals were going nowhere and just wanted to finish strong. Fans showered Pujols with applause during the final regular-season home series against the Cubs, figuring that was his finale. Theyre about to get another bonus shot at attempting to sway No. 5s mind. Teammates have done their part, too. "Chucking the ball across the diamond to Albert Pujols every day, thats something I never thought would happen," said Freese, a hometown star. "Hes one of the greatest hitters ever. Its pretty incredible to put on the jersey next to him." NOTES: The Cardinals plan to place starter Jake Westbrook on the World Series roster in place of Kyle McClellan, who only pitched one-third of an inning in the NLCS. Westbrook could be a hedge in case Carpenter, who had a minor elbow issue after his last start, encounters trouble. ... 2B Skip Schumaker, who has recovered from a pulled side muscle after a cortisone injection, also is likely to be on the roster in place of rookie OF Adron Chambers. cheap jerseys .com) - Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino will start the 2014 season on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring. wholesale nfl jerseys . J.P. Arencibia hit his first home run and Michael Choice added a three-run shot for Texas. Darvish (2-1) shrugged off first-inning homers by Erick Aybar and Albert Pujols to get his first victory since April 6 at Tampa Bay. He allowed three runs, seven hits and no walks in 6 1-3 innings, with nine strikeouts. His teammates scored three more runs than they totalled in his five previous starts combined. Pujols shrugged off an 0-2 pitch by Darvish that glanced off the front of his helmet in the fifth inning as he closed his eyes and turned his head to the right. He remained in the game after a trainer checked on him at first base. The Rangers built a 5-2 lead after two innings with Fielders identical run-scoring doubles -- both line drives over the head of first baseman C.J. Cron and just inside the foul line. Arencibia, who put left fielder Raul Ibanez against the bullpen fence on his bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the first, made it 6-2 in the third with his homer to left-centre. Melbourne, Australia - Two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka rolled to an easy third-round win Saturday at the Australian Open, while Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska also advanced. Azarenka needed exactly one hour in a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Austrian Yvonne Meusburger to start the night session at Laver Arena. Sharapova had a much easier time earlier in the day with cooler conditions and took full advantage in 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) win over Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, while Radwanska had to rally for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The second-seeded Azarenka traded breaks with Meusburger to start their match, but the native of Belarus dominated from there by winning the final 11 games. Azarenka broke serve seven times, won 71 percent of her first-serve points and ripped off 20 winners compared to just five for Meusburger. "It was just a good performance I think from me," said Azarenka. "I felt like I started well and I kept that momentum throughout the match, and thats what I wanted to do today." Its been a pretty smooth first three rounds for Azarenka, who was pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set of her opening match against Johanna Larsson and has since dropped a mere eight games. Next up is American Sloane Stephens in a rematch of last years semifinal affair. Azarenka prevailed in that one, 6-1, 6-4, blowing five match points in the ninth game of the second set before taking a controversial medical timeout. She then finally secured the victory in the following game. "I have great memories of last year," Azarenka said without going into detail. "We left it all last year here, and thats what is important for me, you know, is to play another match. Im looking forward to that match. "Sloane is a great player, very tough competitor. She has a great record here. Its going to be tough. It only gets tougher from here. Every round, you know, is more challenging." Stephens, who stunned Serena Williams in the quarterfinals last year, advanced Saturday with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine. The 13th seed was down 3-5 in the first set, but won six straight games to take control and didnt want to stir up anything from last year. "It was a tough match. Obviously, semis of a Grand Slam it was pretty intense," said Stephens when asked about Azarenka. "Last year has nothing to do with this year. Its a totally different year. A lot of things have happened. So, you know, Im just looking forward to getting back on the court." Sharapova was back on the court two days after her 3 1/2-hour marathon win over Karin Knapp that was played in sweltering heat. It was much cooler on Saturday and the third-seeded Russian breezed through the opening set in just 32 minutes. Cornet, though, battled back in the second with a trio of breaks, including one to force a tiebreaker. She then grabbed a 6-5 lead in the tiebreak, but the 2008 Aussie Open champ came up with a drop shot to save set point and won the next two to finally close it out. "I just didnt have a great rhythm," said Sharapova, who also practiced after the match. "It was quite tough in the end. She had a set point and she had a chance to level the match out, which is something I probably wouldnt want to do, is go into a third set. I was happy I was able to finish it in two." Sharapova will next meet Slovakias Dominika Cibulkova, who pasted 16th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-1, 6-0. Radwanska rebounded Saturday after a difficult first set. She was also down 0-2 in the second set, but captured 12 of the last 14 games. Pavlyuchenkova had a 39-25 edge in winners, but committed 49 unforced errors compared to 19 for Radwanska, who wont have to face former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round. Spains Garbine Muguruza knocked off the 10th seed with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory. Muguruza has had a great start to 2014. She lost to Venus Williams in the quarterfinals of the season-opener in Auckland and won her first career title last week in Hobart. "I worked really hard this preseason, so I think this is the reward for working so hard," said Muguruza. Wozniacki, meanwhile, continued her downward spiral. A 21-time WTA winner but never a Grand Slam champion, the Dane has been ousted before the quarterfinals in each of the last eight major tournaments. Jelena Jankovic and Simona Halep won third-round matches Saturday and will meet in the fourth round. The eighth-seeded Jankovic notched a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Kurumi Nara of Japan, while the 11th-seeded Halep eased past Kazakhstan qualifier Zarina Diyas, 6-1, 6-4. Womens fourth-round play will open Sunday with Serena Williams headlining the action against 14th-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic. Also, fourth-seeded Li Na will take on Russias Ekaterina Makarova and ninth-seeded Angelique Kerber will meet Italys Flavia Pennetta. The American left-hander has finished in the top 10 at the British Open just once -- at Troon in 2004 -- and is using this weeks Scottish Open, on a links course at Castle Stuart, as preparation for the years third major. Mickelson acknowledged Wednesday that his failure to master British greens is the root of his problem, and will attempt to rectify that over the coming fortnight. "The biggest reason is the greens," the sixth-ranked Mickelson said, when asked what has been holding him back on these shores. "I have not putted well. The grass is a little bit more coarse, a little thicker, has a little bit more effect, and you need to putt with less break and more aggression is what Ive come to find. "Im going to try to do that this week and next week and see if that doesnt combat some of the issues that Ive had putting here." With the British Open starting at Royal St. Georges in southeast England next week, Mickelson will also use the warmup event in Scotland to try out new strategies in his famed short game. "Having a week now to be able to see the way the ball reacts, get my mind adjusted to the short-game shots, as well as the full shots, how the balll reacts, I think is going to play a big effect -- a big positive effect -- in my performances," he said.dddddddddddd Mickelson has won four major titles -- three at the Masters and one at the U.S. PGA Championship -- and is widely considered one of the greats of modern golf despite never having held the No. 1 spot. That is chiefly down to playing in the Tiger Woods era. His aim is still to seal the Grand Slam of the four majors -- "I look at those players in a different light, that would be a great goal for me" -- but he also said improving his record in Britain and in links conditions will help him to become a more "complete player." "Its something that I am really starting to enjoy the challenge of succeeding over here," the 41-year-old Mickelson said. "The Scottish Open and the British Open mean a lot to me because its a real challenge for me to overcome the obstacles. I always play high through the air; to be able to play along the ground, keep the ball under control, drive it well through crosswinds, those challenges Ive embraced these last few years. "Theres only one year that I played well, in 2004, where I was a shot out of the playoff. Ive not performed to the level that I have week in, week out in the States. I want to change that and Im planning on doing that." ' ' '
