Sooner or later, you just know Graham DeLaet is going to get a few breaks, make one or two extra putts and have a week where he finally gets his win. Once again, DeLaet finished tied for second at a PGA Tour stop on the weekend, this time at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The pride of Weyburn, Sask., ended up a shot back of Kevin Stadler as the Smallrus managed to break through for his first victory. It should be noted that it took Stadler 239 starts to get his first victory, so theres never a sure thing in this game. As well as DeLaets playing, he may never win a tournament. Or he might win in his next start. Thats the way golf is - no matter how well you play, theres a chance someone else might be just one stroke better. DeLaets finish in Phoenix - where he and wife Ruby recently relocated - earned him $545,600, moving him to ninth on the PGA Tours money list with $1.3 million. Hes now ranked 26th on the Official World Golf Ranking. Hes also finished in the Top 10 in his last five starts. The bearded wonder climbed into contention on Saturday with a strong 65. On Sunday, he came out to the range and promptly tweaked his back on the first shot of his warm-up. Some special treatment from trainer Dr. Craig Davies of Toronto allowed him to tee it up at the appropriate time. "We did a little extra work this morning," DeLaet said. "My routine before the round was a little bit different, but I took some Advil that kicked in a little bit, and I was feeling pretty good for most of the day." That became obvious early on as he went out and made birdies on five of his first 13 holes. As others on the leaderboard began to struggle, DeLaet suddenly was in contention – until he hit the 15th, where he drove his tee shot into the water on the left side of the hole. "I knew Id just have to make a lot of birdies," he stated. "After my tee shot on 15 I thought my chances were probably gone." But birdies on 17 and 18 put him in the clubhouse with the lead. "I knew that I needed probably to birdie the last two," said DeLaet. "That back pin on 17 is really, really tough, and I hit what I thought was a pretty good shot there, but I still had 12, 15 feet. To birdie the last, I knew that I had - was trying to hole it, but, you know, birdie is second best." That late run, by the way, was buoyed by the energy from the crowd, which DeLaet made sure to thank. "Obviously there are tons of people there," he stated. "There are so many Canadians out here following me. Almost felt like a Canadian Open today. Thanks to all of them for being out there." DeLaet will take this week off before heading to Los Angeles for the Northern Trust Open where hell continue his torrid pace to the 2013-14 season. wholesale jerseys . The most polarizing player to enter the NFL in a while, Manziel, is being closely linked to the Browns, who own the No.MONTREAL -- It isnt pretty hockey, but its working for the Montreal Canadiens. For a second game in a row, the Canadiens used patient, defensive hockey and sharp goaltending to hold onto a slim lead as they downed the Dallas Stars 2-1 in the NHL on Tuesday night. Rene Bourque scored the winner in the second period after Michael Bournival opened the scoring in the first for Montreal (8-5-0). The Canadiens were coming off a 2-0 victory against the Rangers in New York on Monday night with Peter Budaj in goal that was just as successful and just as dull to watch for the spectators. "The last two games its been really good team defence, whether its getting pucks out or blocking shots or just being in position," said defenceman Douglas Murray. "It was a good effort by the whole team." The Canadiens are short on forwards with Max Pacioretty, Daniel Briere and Brandon Prust all nursing injuries, so coach Michel Therrien has the team playing basic, defence-first hockey. "With the fact that were missing some players, we have to concentrate on good defensive play and we did that tonight," said Therrien. "I like the effort everyone is giving us. "Carey (Price) made the saves. It was a big team win. Thats four big points in two nights." Dallas outshot Montreal 27-24, but managed only Cody Eakins goal on a long shot that fooled Price late in the second frame. The Stars, last in the Central Division at 5-6-1, were also playing a second game in as many nights, having topped the Sabres 4-3 in coach Lindy Ruffs return to Buffalo on Monday. It was their third set of back-to-back games this season. In one they lost both games and in the other two they won the first game but lost the second. "Weve got to start finding a way in back-to-backs, especially on the road," said Eakin. "Its hard, yeah, but to be a good team you have to do it. "Theese points are huge.dddddddddddd Theyre harder to get as the season progresses, so we have to start bearing down." Eakin used P.K. Subban as a screen on a rush and fooled Price with a medium speed wrist shot from outside the circles at 17:27 of the second to draw the Stars to within one goal. "It was one of those ones where I used him as a screen," said Eakin. "I had some speed and caught him off guard a bit." The Stars pushed hard for the equalizer in the third, when they outshot Montreal 9-3, but Price stood his ground. The Canadiens struck first as Raphael Diaz lifted a wrist shot from the point to the far post that Bournival tipped off defenceman Stephane Robidas and past Kari Lehtonen at 12:02 of the first. The rookie Bournival has three goals and four assists in his last seven games. "I wasnt sure if I deflected it," the 21-year-old said. "I felt it on my stick but I didnt want to say anything." Bourque put in a Diaz rebound 12:55 into the second. It was a much-needed goal for his line with struggling centre David Desharnais and, for the last two games, recent call-up Louis Leblanc. Desharnais started the play with a rush up the right side that was stopped. A Dallas clearing attempt was intercepted by Diaz, who picked up his second point of the night. Desharnais has no goals and one assist in 13 games, but the line did well and Therrien gave them more ice time than usual. "We were moving our feet," said Bourque. "We finally got a few chances offensively. "Davy and I have been snake-bitten, but were getting chances." Notes: Travis Moen, who took a puck in the face Saturday, sat out a second game, so Leblanc got to play again. . . Ryan Garbutt, Kevin Connauton and Travis Morin were scratched for Dallas. . . Montreals Ryan White and Michael Blunden each played his 100th NHL game. ' ' '

LANGLEY, B.C. -- Amber Holland cant go to the grocery store -- or many other places -- without getting recognized. "Literally, two or three people stop me as Im grocery shopping," she said. "It almost seems like every place I go, someone knows you." Such is the price of newly-found fame for the reigning Canadian womens curling champion. But after winning her first national crown in Charlottetown and following it up with a silver medal at the world championships in Denmark, she has had a much harder time finding suitable competition this year. By gaining an automatic return ticket to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts through the Team Canada berth, Hollands Kronau, Sask., rink does not have to compete in provincial playdowns. As a result, she will play fewer events before heading to Red Deer, Alta., next month to defend her Canadian crown. This weeks Continental Cup of Curling, an international competition pitting a North American squad a Team World comprising rinks from Europe and China, is helping to pick up some of the slack. "Its great playing conditions out there and you feel like you can make any shot," said Holland, 37. "The pressure to go out and perform well? Its good. Were in a good space out there for what we need to do to prepare." But Holland is still trying to get some of the kinks out of her game. She dropped a 6-4 decision Friday to Binyu Wang of China, the 2010 Olympic bronze medallist. With a strong mixed doubles showing, World took a 66-42 lead after two days of comeptition. World is looking to avenge last years one-sided loss to Team North America at St. Albert, Alta. "Its a big day for me and a big day for the World," said Wang after she followed her victory over Holland with a mixed doubles win. "We have to keep going." Holland battled back to tie the score three times after trailing 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3. "We just had so many opportunities,"said Holland. "We just missed. We played well, just missed some of those key shots. When they missed, we didnt make (shots) and thats the difference at this level of play." Wang claimed the win as she broke a 4-4 tie by scoring two with the hammer in the eighth and final end. (Continental Cup womens and mens matches are shortened to eight ends from the standard 10.) The turning point came in the seventh end as Hollands rink failed to lay two when third Kim Schneider was heavy with one of her shots. Holland and Wang then played a game of hit-and-stay with successful takeout attempts before the Canadian skip drew to the button and had to settle for just one point. "I thought we played pretty good," said Holland. "I was disappointed with two or three of my shots. They just went two or three feet heavy, like the last end -- which really hurt us." Holland finished womens team play with a 0-1-1 record. Wang finished womens play with a perfect 2-0 record. "It was a lucky one," Wang said. "We had to pick that one out of there. For this game, we are so happy for a win." Wang was also grateful for the opportunity to play against the Canadian skip as she prepares to qualify her Chinese rink for the world championships again. "I think this is the first time we beat Amber Holland," said Wang. "She defeated us twice last year at the worlds. So this is good for us." In other womens action Friday, Stefanie Lawtons Saskatoon rink gave North America a 3-3 draw with Scotlands Eve Muirhead, a four-time world junior gold medallist. It was Muirheads second draw with a Canadian rink here. She and Holland battled to a 5-5 tie Thursday. Meanwhile, Patti Lank, a Midale, Sask., native who lives in Lewiston, N.Y., guided her U.S. national-champion rink to an 8-5 victory over Swedens Annette Norberg, the defending world champion and two-time Olympic champ. "I dont remember ever losing to her," said Lank. The non-traditional event includes mens, womens, mixed doubles, singles and skins competitions. The first team to get 201 of a possible 400 points will be declared the winner. In mixed doubles action, World took all three of the days matches. Wang and Torger Nergard of Norway teamed up to beat Lank and Craig Savill of Ottawa 5-4; Scotlands Muirhead and Fredrik Lindberg downed Lawton and Ben Hebert of Calgary 8-7; and the Scottish duo of Greg Drummond and Anna Sloan defeated Holland and Joe Polo of Duluth Minn., 7-5. The two teams split the mens matches later Friday. Scotlands Tom Brewster scored one in the final end to beat Winnipegs Jeff Stoughton 7-6. Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., scored four in the sixth end of a 6-4 win over Swedens Niklas Edin. And Norways Thomas Ulsrud scored two in the final end in a 4-4 tie with American Pete Fenson. Notes--Lank, a dual Canadian-American citizen, is preparing for the U.S. championships by playing and practising at her longtime Niagara Falls, Ont., club. ... Wang qualified for the world championships by winning Chinas National Winter Games crown last weekend. Its been a successful Games for Canada, which will finish near the top of the medal standings again. From repeat gold medal winners to multiple medal winners to undefeated teams to acts that define the Olympic spirit, there are many solid candidates who could be considered to receive the honour. Who do you think should carry the flag for Canada on Sunday? Four years ago, Alexandre Bilodeau made history by winning Canadas first Olympic gold medal on home soil. He followed that up by defending his title in moguls this year. He is set to retire at seasons end so this would be a fitting way to honour his accomplishments. Bobsledders Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse also won gold in Vancouver, a first in the womens event, and earned their way back to the top of the podium again in Sochi. Jennifer Jones and her rink from Winnipeg didnt lose a game in womens curling, going 9-0 in the round robin before beating Great Britain and Sweden in the playoffs. Canada has shown well in curling since its inception into the Olympics as an official sport in 1998 but has yet to have a flag bearer from the sport. "Were going to have that little OR — Olympic record — next to our name forever," Jones said after the final game. "Its one of those records that can only be tied and never broken. Well always be remembered." Speed skater Denny Morrison has been the lone Canadian athlete to win multiple medals in individual disciplines, taking the silver in the 1,000m event and bronze in the 1,500m. However, if not for the unselfish act of teammate Gilmore Junio, Morrison may have come up empty in Sochi. Junio stepped aside to llet Morrison race the 1,000m event and the move paid off for Canada.dddddddddddd Morrison then went on to win his bronze medal but it all started with Junio putting the team before himself. "People talk about it as being a huge sacrifice, but I dont see it that way," Junio said. "It was such an easy decision. It was such a simple decision for me. It was about giving Canada a chance to win a medal." It was actually Morrison who started a campaign on Twitter to have Junio carry the flag. "@cdnhappygilmore for Closing Ceremonies flag bearer! This guy showing everything that is Canadian pride and Olympic Pride. #ThankYouGilmore," Morrison tweeted as the #GilForFlagBearer campaign gained popularity. Along the same lines, theres Justin Wadsworth, the cross-country skiing coach who ran onto the course to help a Russian skier who had broken a ski. "I wanted him to have dignity as he crossed the finish line," Wadsworth said. That is the essence of good sportsmanship. The Dufour-Lapointe sisters captured Canadians attention on the first day of competition with Justine winning the gold and Chloe the silver in moguls skiing. And then theres hockey. Forward Marie-Philip Poulin and goaltender Shannon Szabados were key players in Team Canadas march to gold, especially in Thursdays riveting come-from-behind overtime victory. And what if the mens team were to follow suit on Sunday? Should Sidney Crosby or Carey Price warrant some consideration? There are many great candidates who have stood out among the throng of superb athletes in Sochi these past two weeks. But only one individual can carry the flag. Who do you think should have the honour of carrying Canadas colours into the stadium on Sunday? As always, its Your! Call. ' ' '

BERLIN -- Bayer Leverkusen held Bayern Munich to 1-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday, ensuring neither side could take full advantage of Borussia Dortmunds earlier 2-0 loss at Borussia Moenchengladbach. Bayern was unable to turn almost complete domination into goals at Leverkusen, despite boasting more than two-thirds possession and outshooting the home side by 27 shots to five. Toni Kroos fired Bayern ahead in the 29th minute, when Franck Ribery pulled the ball back for the unmarked former Leverkusen player to rifle his shot under the crossbar. Leverkusen pulled one back out of nothing a minute later, when goalkeeper Manuel Neuer failed to deal with Lars Benders cross and then parried Sebastian Boenischs shot from the rebound to Sidney Sam, who scored from close range. Thomas Mueller should have restored Bayerns lead five minutes later when he headed over with the goal at his mercy, and Bayern missed a host more chances with Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno in inspired form. "Leverkusen played with 11 players and one of these players was Bernd Leno. When Leno is such an outstanding goalkeeper ..." Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said. Mueller might have had a penalty in the second half, when he appeared to be pulled back by Omer Toprak, yet Bayern had ample other opportunities. "I dont know. We did everything," Guardiola said. "Congratulations to my players. Were first in the table. Im proud of our performance. We played very, very well. And thats football." Bayern moved one point ahead of Dortmund, which is level with Leverkusen after eight games. Dortmund dominated its game in Moenchengladbach but was dealt a blow when Mats Hummels was sent off after conceding a penalty by fouling Havard Nordtveit with 10 minutes to go. Max Kruse scored from the spot a minute later, five minutes before Juan Arango set up Raffael to seal Dortmunds first defeat of the season. "The defeat is down to our own stupidity," Dortmund winger Kevin Grosskreutz said. "Gladbach have a very good team, which we dominated over 80 minutes. If only wed scored." Dortmund had 27 shots on goal compared to the home sides six, but failed to get past Gladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. "The 2-0 was clearly undeserved after 90 minutes," acknowledged Moenchengladbach coach Lucien Favre. Dortmund came one game short of equaling the club record of scoring in 32 consecutive Bundesliga games. "Football can be unjust. We had to learn that at first hand today," Dortmund attacking midfielder Jonas Hoffman said. Elsewhere, promoted Eintracht Braunschweig defeated Wolfsburg 2-0 for its first Bundesliga win in 28 years, Mainz came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Hoffenheim, Schalke defeated 10-man Augsburg 4-1, and Stuttgart drew 1-1 at home with Werder Bremen. Braunschweigs win at local rival Wolfsburg was its first top-flight victory since a 2-1 win at Bayer Uerdingen on June 1, 1985. This is its first season back in the Bundesliga. "Its a very special day for the whole club," said Karim Bellarabi, who fired the visitors into the lead for the first time this season in the 31st minute. Wolfsburg dominated possession but Domi Kumbela secured the result on a counterattack in the 86th. "The pondering paid off this week," said Braunschweig coach Torsten Lieberknecht, referring to comments last week when he hinted at resigning after the 4-0 defeat at home to Stuttgart. In Mainz, Hoffenheim striker Kevin Volland marched past five defenders before unleashing a shot beyond Heinz Mueller in the 14th, and Robert Firmino chipped the goalkeeper eight minutes later. Mainz substitute Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting pulled one back in the 82nd, before captain Nikolce Noveski secured an unlikely equalizer in injury time. Bremen had Nils Petersons 37th-minute goal to thank for cancelling out Stuttgart striker Martin Harniks sixth-minute opener. Augsburg striker Sascha Moelders stunned Schalke fans in Gelsenkirchen when he fired the visitors ahead in the 10th minute. But Kevin-Prince Boateng equalized with a penalty six minutes later, after Ragnar Klavan was sent off for hauling down Adam Szalai. "Everyone saw the key moment of the game. We were very much in the game up to the sending off," said Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl. Szalai made it 2-1 in the 28th, when Roman Neustaedter sprung the offside trap and Atsuto Uchida set him up for a simple finish, and the Hungarian striker grabbed his second in the 78th, before Max Meyer wrapped it up in the 87th. wholesale jerseys . The new faces at the Pro Bowl arent so sure, and are curious how intense they should play in tonights all-star game. "Ive never been in a Pro Bowl before, so I dont know what the tempo is going to be like," San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews said. "So its going to be fun to get out there and see how it goes." You can watch all the action on TSN beginning at 7pm et/4pm pt. Six rookies are among the 36 first-timers, including quarterbacks Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers and Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals, who are replacing Super Bowl quarterbacks Eli Manning and Tom Brady. Their selection makes this Pro Bowl the first that will feature two rookie quarterbacks. "This is like the height of being an NFL player -- being an all-star and having the opportunity to wear the red, white and blue -- just having that jersey," said Newton, the No. 1 overall pick in last years draft. "Only a few people can say, Ive made it to the NFL, but fewer number can say theyve made it here." In a game known to highlight offence, the NFC will feature two of the games most prolific quarterbacks. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers will start for the NFC and will be backed up by New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees. Rodgers passed for 4,463 yards with 45 touchdowns and just six interceptions. His quarterback rating of 122.5 set an NFL record. Brees, meanwhile, threw for 5,476 yards, breaking Dan Marinos single-season record. The NFC also features Philadelphia running back LeSean McCoy and receivers Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona), Steve Smith (Carolina) and Greg Jennings (Green Bay). Houston defensive end Antonio Smith acknowledges the NFC has a lot of great players on offence, but isnt too worried. "We got so many weapons. We got so many Super Bowls. We got Hall of Fame players on our team. So I think well be all right," Smith said. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will start for the AFC, with San Diegos Philip Rivers and Dalton backing him up. "I think any quarterback will tell you that we wish we were getting ready to play in a game a week from now, but its always an honour to come," said Rivers, who this season joined Brees and Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks to pass for 4,000 yards in four consecutive seasons. The players wrapped up a week of "workouts" on Saturday. "The practices have been great," Cardinals rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson said. "Its definitely the most laid-back practices Ive ever been involved in." The brief practices have been as grueling and intense as a poolside, Hawaaiian lomilomi massage.dddddddddddd The players, some wearing sunglasses, often sweat more after practice -- signing autographs for the fans. "If you break a sweat during practice in Hawaii, theres a rule youve got to be sent home by the NFL," said Packers cornerback Charles Woodson, who is making his eighth Pro Bowl in his 14th season. After practice, the players usually spend their days golfing, fishing, shopping or lounging on the beach with their families. In a season that began with a bitter labour dispute is ending in paradise for these players. "Its more than what I thought it would be. Its amazing. Its truly amazing," said Smith, making his first trip. The players are hoping this wont be the final game in Hawaii. NFL and state officials are negotiating a deal to keep the game in the islands. Many said they wouldnt play if it were elsewhere. Bengals rookie receiver A.J. Green said he spent time learning from the players he grew up admiring. He doesnt know what to expect Sunday. "A lot of guys arent trying to get hurt. I think its going to be up tempo, but not too crazy," he said. Packers coach Mike McCarthy, who is leading the NFC, said his game plan was simple with such a loaded team. "Our goal is to have 11 on the field," he said. McCarthy said the game is all about the players, who earned this trip with their work during the season. "I dont think anybodys too worried about how many touches they get or where the ball is going to go," he said. Maybe with the exception of Jennings, who believes he has the inside track on the throws with his coaches calling plays and Rodgers as the signal caller. "The other (receivers) already know, when Im in the game, 85 is going to get the ball," Jennings said. This years winners will receive a record US$50,000 each, up $5,000 from last year, with the losing players earning $25,000. "When that fourth quarter rolls around and theres a little bit of money on the line, I think youll see the tempo step up. Well all be ready for it," Packers linebacker Clay Matthews said. Chargers tight end Antonio Gates said he expects to play hard. "I only know one way to prepare for a game. I dont know how to go half-speed," he said. "This is still a game. Guys still got on pads and coming out to compete." Besides the money, conference bragging rights are on the line. "Its still a pride thing -- AFC vs. NFC," Gates said. "We feel like we are the tougher division and they feel the same." Rivers said the money is important, but isnt the main motivator for these competitors. "Even if we were playing for nothing, when it comes down to it, theyre still keeping score," he said. ' ' '

BOSTON -- David Ortiz headed to the plate, ready to hit for the final time in the World Series. St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina stood up, spoke softly to his pal and twice patted him on the side. By that point, even the Cardinals were members of the Big Papi fan club. Ortiz walked off as the MVP after Boston won 6-1 Wednesday night in Game 6, capping a week in which he spurred the Red Sox with a mix of power, patience and a most timely pep talk. "I know Im one of the forces for this ballgame and I like to take things personal," he said. "And thats been my whole career, a challenge." "I wasnt trying to be the guy, but I know I got to get something done to keep the line moving," he said. "I dont even have to do anything today, I guess, the rest of the team took over." Ortiz drew four walks and three of them were intentional, including the last one in the eighth inning after talking with Molina. Overall, Ortiz piled up totals that not even slow-pitch softball players dream about: He reached base a whopping 19 times in 25 plate appearances. "Hey, let me tell you," he said. "I was hitting well, but it wasnt like I was hitting pitches right down the middle of the plate. They were trying their best to get me out." When the game ended, Ortiz hoisted reliever Koji Uehara over his shoulder. He then raised the gleaming gold trophy with one hand, the crowning achievement of his career. Now a three-time champion, Ortiz is the last link to the Red Sox team that swept the Cardinals in 2004 and ended an 86-year title drought. The sellout crowd broke into thunderous chants of "MVP! MVP!" each time Ortiz batted. Quite a turnaround for the 37-year-old slugger who badly slumped in the AL championship series. Ortiz hit 11 for 16 (.68 with two home runs and six RBIs against the Cardinals, and just missed a grand slam when Carlos Beltran robbed him by reaching over the short bullpen wall. Asked to describe Ortiz, manager John Farrell paused. "Well, Id probably rather let his bat do the talking, because its pretty special," he said. Ortiz also drew eight walks and legged out a few infield hits, helped by St. Louis second baseman Matt Carpenter playing way out in shallow right field. At one point, Ortiz tied a Series record by reaching base in nine straight trips. "Hes as hot as anyone youre going to see this time of year," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "We tried to make tough pitches in tough situations, tried to pitch around him at times." Ortizs .760 on-base percentage and batting average were the second-highest in Series history, trailing only Billy Hatchers marks of .800 and .750 in 1990 for Cincinnati. "David has been unbelievable his whole career this time of the year. Its his time of the year. Ive been on the wrong side of it a few times," winning pitcher John Lackey said. As Ortiz came up in the first inning, Molina and plate umpire Jim Joyce talked about him. "This guys unbelievable," Molina said on Fox audio. "Hes fun to watch," Joyce said. Yet for all the impact he made swinging the bat in getting 11 of Bostons 41 hits -- or just standing there and watching the Cardinals pitch around him -- Ortiz made an equally important contribution with his words. With St. Louis leading the Series 2-1 and the Red Sox scuffling in Game 4, Ortiz called his bearded band together for an impromptu huddle in the dugout. Ortiz said he merely told the guys to relax, stay loose and appreciate the moment. His teammates told a different story after Boston rallied to win. "It was like 24 kindergartners looking up at their teacher. He got everyones attention and we looked him right in the eyes," said Jonny Gomes, who answered with a winning home run. "That message was pretty powerful." Thats also what the Red Sox expect from their Dominican-born thumper, known for his neatly tailored suits and dazzling diamond jewelry. Whatever the Red Sox need, and whenever they need it, hes ready. When the Series shifted to St. Louis and there was no designated hitter, he adeptly moved from the DH spot to first base. He did the same thing way back in the 2004 Series, and again in 2007 when the Red Sox swept Colorado. As the Red Sox celebrated on the field after the final out, Ortiz considered what it meant to win a third title. Easy, he answered. Then he watched with dread as it started drifting right. By the time it reached the uprights, it was dangerously close. The senior held his breath. So did the rest of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. It sailed through with about a foot to spare. The crowd exploded. It was the finishing touch on Mississippis 27-24 upset victory over No. 6 LSU on Saturday night. "Can you believe it?" Ritter asked. It was a happy ending for Ole Miss (4-3, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) after the Rebels let a 17-point lead slip away when LSUs Zach Mettenberger hit Jarvis Landry for a 4-yard touchdown to tie it at 24 with 3:19 remaining. But the Rebels responded with a methodical, 14-play drive that ended in Ritters field goal with 2 seconds remaining. "This is the biggest win of my life," Ole Miss defensive end Cameron Whigham said. "Im just so proud to be a part of the Ole Miss family and be able to compete with my brothers each Saturday." It capped a remarkable day of upsets across the league. LSU joined Georgia, Texas A&M, Florida and South Carolina as ranked SEC teams to lose Saturday. It was another thrilling game for the Rebels, who lost last week against Texas A&M on a last-second field goal. "What (the team) went through this week, with the outside world having their opinions, you can imagine how proud I am," Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said. Bo Wallace completed 30 of 39 passes for 346 yards and Jaylen Walton rushed for a career-high 105 yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Ole Miss finished with 525 total yards. LSU had 388. LSU (6-2, 3-2) nearly pulled off the comeback, but couldnt overcome a rough game by Mettenberger, who threw three crucial interceptions. "We didnt do some of the things that we needed to come in here and do," LSU coach Les Miles said. "I really thought we were going to throw those balls and complete them and I thought they were great calls." The winning field goal was redemption for Ritter, who had a 29-yard attempt blocked eaarlier in the fourth quarter.dddddddddddd. LSU moved the ball fairly well in the first half, especially on the ground, but Mettenbergers bad decisions and poor throws cost the Tigers dearly. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound senior came into the game leading the SEC with 1,890 yards, 15 touchdowns and just two interceptions. But he had a brutal first half, throwing three interceptions, including two in the end zone. All three were thrown into tight coverage. Mettenberger finished 19-of-33 passing for 274 yards and a touchdown. While Mettenberger was struggling, Wallace started hot, completing 16 of 23 passes for 200 yards in the first half. Ritter kicked a 28-yard field goal in the first quarter to put Ole Miss ahead 3-0 and Barry Brunettis 3-yard touchdown pass to Nick Parker gave the Rebels a 10-0 halftime lead. The Rebels defence was surprisingly stout. They were missing five starters, including linebacker Serderius Bryant, the teams leading tackler. But Ole Miss used a no-name bunch to stop LSU consistently. Chief Brown, Cody Prewitt and Charles Sawyer had the three interceptions. "Im really not surprised at all that we won this game," Prewitt said. "I feel like its the first time this season we played for 60 true minutes." Ole Miss announced a crowd of 61,160, which is the ninth-largest in school history. And the place was rocking by the time Walton broke through for a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 17-0 lead. But the LSU offence finally came alive in the third quarter, scoring touchdowns on short runs by Kenny Hilliard and Jeremy Hill to pull within 17-14. Ole Miss yanked the momentum right back with a seven-play, 76-yard drive, capped by Waltons spectacular 26-yard touchdown dash through the teeth of LSUs defence. The Rebels had a 24-14 lead and all the momentum early in the fourth quarter, but Korvic Neat dropped a punt and LSU recovered on Ole Miss 13. The defence managed to hold, but LSUs Colby Delahoussaye hit a 41-yard field goal to pull the Tigers within 24-17. Ole Miss squandered another opportunity a few minutes later when Ritters 29-yard field goal was blocked by Ego Ferguson. ' ' '

Drew Tate hasnt yet fully arrived as a CFL quarterback. But the 27-year-old Texan certainly appears to have all the tools and intangibles to become the answer to the never-ending quest for the CFLs next great arm. Theres a lesson in Tates emergence in taking the No.1 job away from Henry Burris, one thats well-established throughout recent CFL history about how the league gets its best quarterbacks. They arent NFL journeymen or guys who once were first-round picks looking for redemption, or college stars who are handed the keys when they cross the border. Study the list of the greatest 25 quarterback of the past 30 years and youll find a remarkable similarity in their stories. (Doug Flutie being the exception, but then Flutie is the exception to dozens of rules in professional football). They are players who are overlooked by the NFL, asked to bide their time in the CFL as backups, learn the three-down game by watching from the bench and then, after much patience, got their chance. "Five years isnt too quickly," said Tate, whose start Friday night against Saskatchewan was his first since leading the University of Iowa into the Alamo Bowl against Texas on Dec. 30th, 2006. "But to be honest, if I got thrown in the fire sooner, I probably wouldnt have performed the way I did." Drew Tate had a brief stint with the St. Louis Rams in the spring of 2007 before joining the Saskatchewan Roughriders practice roster that same season, taking up the fourth-string role behind Kerry Joseph, Marcus Crandell and Darian Durant. The Roughriders released him at the end of the 2008 season and a few months later he signed with the Stamps, beginning a stint of nearly three full seasons on the bench in red and white. So if fans are wondering why he was able to make his first CFL start looking like someone well-seasoned in three-down football, thats because he is. "I guess you could call it a blessing in disguise," said Tate. "Im a visual learner so its been fun to watch and collect so much information." Of course while much of playing quarterback in the CFL has to be learned, there are other qualities that are just ingrained. And thats where Tates background growing up in Texas as the step-son of an accomplished high school football coach comes into play. Tate was about six years old when his mother married Dick Olin, whom Tate latched onto "like a leech." (See Olin coaching quarterback drills here -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcfV0yfaJgM) Tate would spend hours with Olin learning from him at the fieldhouse and at home, throwing the football and watching film. When Friday nights rolled around, Tate was the ball boy who had a front row seat for his football education. "I was like a little sponge," he said. One of those intangibles Tate developed during those years was a raw confidence which has been abundantly apparent in his play the past two weeks. "You have to be arrogant and confident, I think thats the secret to being good," said Tate. "Its like in the movie Bull Durham where Kevin Costner says to Tim Robbins, thats the secret, you have to stay arrogant. I truly believe that because as soon as you lose confidence, you slow down and your teammates can see it. " So with all that confidence, why did Tate decide to re-sign with Calgary at the end of last season, instead of hitting the free agent market where he surely would have had suitors and perhaps a better shot at starting sooner? "First of all, Calgary were the ones to give me an opportunity to play and I felt it was a special situation between them and me and I felt the responsibility to respect and repay," Tate said. "Second, I love Calgary. I really like this city, a fun place, a beautiful place with pretty people. And with Dave Dickenson as a play-caller its tough to leave something like that." "And I hadnt done much. I wasnt like this guy who was ready to take over an organization, I wasnt quite ready. I still had a lot to learn about this game and myself." If youre wondering what happened to the arrogance of Drew Tate as it pertained to his future last fall, well that part of his personality he chooses to leave on the field. "The only time Im a prick is in between the sidelines," said Tate. "Thats the only time Im an arrogant guy and my teammates dont like me sometimes. Its Batman and Bruce Wayne, to be honest. Its totally different." "I was watching 60 Minutes about Steve Jobs and they said he was an asshole, kind of. But when youre in the business of trying to win, youre not going to make everyone happy. Its the same in football. Its not personal. Its the game and you cant take it off the field." Now some other thoughts on Week 17 in the CFL and the look ahead to Week 18: --- Assuming Drew Tate hangs onto the No. 1 job in Calgary, its impossible that Henry Burris will be back with the Stamps next season, just on the basis of pure economics. Burris, who earns between $350,000 and $400,000 per season, will be 37 next year but many believe hes in the kind of shape that would allow him to play until at least age 40. The question is where? And would any team in the league take on that contract or does Burris have to take a step back, not unlike the way players such as Kevin Glenn, Khari Jones or Kerry Joseph have done, playing without a guaranteed starters role and having to earn playing time on an incentive-laden contract. Here are the top 4 most likely destinations for Burris next season. 1 – Toronto – Through seven starts, Steven Jyles still has a lot to prove. While he demonstrated some success last week against Edmonton, he needs to show it during a time when a game isnt all but out of reach. Head coach Jim Barker has given Jyles a strong endorsement as the teams quarterback of the future. If he sticks to that, would Barker be willing to take on a 37-year-old Burris instead? Or does Burris make more sense as an insurance policy in Toronto, with a salary based on the number of starts he makes, and an opportunity to battle Jyles for the top job? 2 – Hamilton – Theyve got a two-quarterback system right now, which suggests the Cats arent totally sold on either Kevin Glenn or Quinton Porter. Another disappointing ending to another .500 season could lead to winds of change blowing through Hamilton in some dramatic ways. Would the Cats want to go with their current tandem for another season after another disappointment or would they dump one in favour of Burris as the starter? 3 – Montreal – This one only makes sense if Anthony Calvillo retires and everyone around the Als seems to believe he is coming back. Even if Calvillo does surprise everyone by calling it quits, the Als have Adrian McPherson in the wings. 4 – Winnipeg – They love Buck Pierce but the offence still sputters and his health remains a source of concern. Pierce is a free agent, but having made Winnipeg his year-round home, theres every sense hell be back next season. If hes not, Burris might make some sense but not at his current price. --- With 964 rushing yards and two games to play, Edmontons Jerome Messam is virtually assured of becoming the first Canadian to rush for 1,000 yards since Sean Millington in 2000 and just the second since Orville Lee hit that mark in 1988. The Esks have certainly benefited from having a Canadian running back with such size and speed, giving them a great backfield presence and some ratio flexibility as well. However, Esks fans may not want to get accustomed to seeing Messam in the backfield, as he will be high on the list of CFL players who will draw interest from the NFL this off-season. (Messam signed his deal before July 26th, 2010, making him among the few players who can still pursue the NFL while entering the option year of his CFL contract, which was eliminated in the current CBA.) Interesting that Messam, who is the odds-on favourite to become the leagues top Canadian this season, was not taken among any of the 36 selections of the 2008 CFL Draft. --- Its a delicate process but Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille seems to have made a successful late-season adaptation to a two-quarterback system for the Tiger-Cats. Kevin Glenn and Quinton Porter combined to go 17 of 28 for 232 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, in a 42-point outburst against B.C. on Saturday night. But maybe just as significant was the handshake and embrace between Glenn and Porter before the start of the second half when Porter was about to enter the game. Bellefeuille has made sure to be up front with both quarterbacks about where they stand and exactly how theyll be managed. And that includes two rules – that neither quarterback will be sent into the middle of a game for one series. And neither quarterback will face a quick hook, meaning they dont have to play with the fear that a single mistake will result in being yanked to the sidelines. Bellefeuille is committed to using both quarterbacks through the final two weeks of the regular season so that both are ready to contribute to the Tiger-Cats playoff chances. Neither has been promised the starting role and Bellefeuilles intent to use both players is qualified with the understanding that a hot-hand isnt going to be pulled from a game. --- The Tiger-Cats had a different presence in the middle of their defence against the Lions, thanks to the arrival of former Ohio State Buckeye Rob Rose at defensive tackle. The Cats have had Rose on their radar screen for two years, since they first saw him at a free agent camp in Buffalo during the spring of 2010. Rose spent last season on the Miami Dolphins practice roster. And with the Cats having had such issues creating interior pressure this season, they rushed him onto the field against the Lions just three days after he arrived in Steeltown last week. After making three hits on the quarterback, a knockdown and being tough on the run, look for Rose to become a mainstay on the Cats defensive line. As an interesting aside, Rose is one of the players who spoke on the record to Sports Illustrated about the merchandise scandal under former head coach Jim Tressel, without apologies. "I knew how much money that the school was making," Rose told SI. "I always heard about how Ohio State had the biggest Nike budget. I was struggling, my mom was struggling... It was just something that I had to do. I was in a hard spot... [Other] guys were doing it for the same reasons. The university doesnt really help. Technically, we knew it was wrong, but a lot of those guys are from the inner city and we didnt have much, and we had to go on the best we could. I couldnt call home to ask my mom to help me out." Have to like Roses honesty and his rationale. --- Aside from the 20,153 who watched Hamilton beat Calgary in Moncton on Sept. 24th, the eight smallest crowds in the CFL this season have all been in Toronto. --- Having sold out six consecutive games and with merchandise sales humming, the Bombers should join the ranks of CFL teams that can boast a healthy profit at seasons end this season. --- Fridays loss to Winnipeg was the first outing in which Torontos Cory Boyd rushed for 100 yards and the Argos did not win. --- Barring something unforeseen during the final two weeks of the regular season, Montreal will finish with the CFLs leading passer (Anthony Calvillo), receiver (Jamel Richardson), and running back (Brandon Whitaker). --- To put Winnipegs three interceptions against Montreal into perspective, consider that Calvillo had been picked off just five times all season before Saturdays loss to the Bombers, after throwing just 13 interceptions in 1,112 pass attempts in the two previous seasons. --- The randomness of injuries in football can be a significant factor in the fortunes of any team. And a lot of it is timing. Both the Blue Bombers and Eskimos have had points in the season where it seemed they were losing a player every quarter. (The Esks at one point had four import receivers injured while the Bombers once lost two quarterbacks and two running backs in the same game.) Now its B.C.s turn. The Lions played last week without linebacker Solomon Elimimian, defensive linemen Brent Johnson and Khalif Mitchell, kick returner Tim Brown, special teamer Jason Arakgi and receiver Shawn Gore. Then during their loss to the Tiger-Cats, running back Andrew Harris, receiver Akeem Foster and quarterback Travis Lulay, fullback Rolly Lumbala and long snapper Dan McCullough all went out. --- Football is not a game with a lot of options for recruiting international athletes. But some CFL teams are investigating a trend that has been unfolding the NFL where teams have auditioned punters from Australia. Two NFL teams currently have Australian punters (Washington and Dallas) and earlier this year, there were a total of four on NFL rosters. The bonus for CFL teams is that any player who has never played North American football qualifies as a "Canadian" or non-import in the CFL. Saskatchewan and Calgary are the first two CFL teams to have added Australian punters to their negotiation lists. Cleveland signed Bengals slot receiver Andrew Hawkins to a contract offer sheet on Thursday, a Browns spokesman said.(Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals needed some help to reach the playoffs and they got it from their National League Division Series opponent, the Philadelphia Phillies. St. Louis won 16 of its last 21 games and was battling the Atlanta Braves for the final playoff berth in the National League. The Braves monumental collapse concluded with Wednesdays extra-inning loss to the Phillies soon after the Cardinals took care of their own business in Houston. The Cardinals then watched the Phillies, owners of the best record in baseball at 102-60, eliminate the Braves from postseason contention and a celebration ensued. The festivities lasted for only a short while since the Cardinals now have bigger fish to fry with a postseason showdown against the Phillies. It wasnt easy for St. Louis to reach the playoffs for the eighth time since the turn of the century and aspirations werent looking so good towards the end of August. An 18-8 ledger in the month of September turned things around and erased a 10 1/2-game deficit in the NL Wild Card standings since the Milwaukee Brewers ran away with the National League Central title. Instead of dreaming of vacations and relaxing by the pool, the Cardinals remained focused. "Everybody thought you were crazy if you were the one who said we could do it, but we had to keep believing," said Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse, who gets the nod for Game 1 Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park. "Otherwise, it wasnt going to happen." St. Louis overcame many obstacles to get where its at today, dealing with injuries to starting pitcher Adam Wainwright, sluggers Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday, Skip Schumaker and David Freese to name a few. But the Cards kept battling and a lot of help from veteran slugger Lance Berkman, starters Chris Carpenter, Jaime Garcia and Jake Westbrook opened the doors to the playoffs. Even Pujols contract talks subsided on his request when the season commenced and left several wondering if this could be Pujols last hurrah in St. Louis. Whether this is Pujols final year in the Gateway City or not, the Cardinals have the three-time NL MVP ready to go for another postseason run. Philadelphia, meanwhile, probably knew it would be in this position when Cliff Lee decided to join aces Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt in the City of Brotherly Love for his second stint in red pinstripes. Lee and Halladay finished the regular season as NL Cy Young Award candidates and cemented the Phillies rotation as one of the best in baseball. It almost seemed as if the regular season were just an appetizer to the Phillies, who experienced their own ups and downs before capturing their fifth straight National League East title. The Phillies won a franchise-record 102 games this season, something they havent done since winning 101 games in 1976-77, and manager Charlie Manuel registered his team-record 646th regular- season victory. "Weve had a big season, but at the same time, we still have a lot of work to do," Manuel said. "Our ultimate goal is to go to the World Series and win, and I think were sitting in a pretty good position. Its up to us to go get it." The Phils went after it following a season-high eight-game losing streak a week ago and Wednesdays series finale in Atlanta had a playoff atmosphere to it. One would argue Philadelphia wanted the Braves out of the postseason no matter what and much like the Cardinals, it got the job done and will face the NL Central inhabitants for the first time in postseason play. Besides their vaunted rotation, the Phillies made a huge splash before the trade deadline by acquiring right-handed hitter Hunter Pence from the Astros for a few minor leaguers. Pence fit in with the ballclub right away and knows hes just one piece to the puzzle of Philadelphias success. Pence fought off an inside pitch to put the Phils ahead on Wednesday against the Braves. "My main goal was to stay inside the ball and if you do get jammed, hope it finds a hole or something," Pence said. "It was definitely one of those lucky hits, but sometimes miracles can happen." Although it wouldnt seem like a miracle to win the World Series for the heavily-favored Phillies, a little bit of luck can go a long way too. LINEUP The Phillies and Cardinals both possess productive lineups, and Philadelphias addition of Pence gives it the slight edge in this matchup. The Phillies needed a strong right-handed bat in front of slugging first baseman and lefty Ryan Howard, who cracked 33 homers and drove in 116 runs. Outfielder Ben Francisco was expected to fill that right-handed void when Jayson Werth signed a contract large enough to feed a small country in Washington. Francisco never panned out and even rookie Domonic Brown got a few looks. The Pence deal certainly put the Phillies over the top. Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Pence are expected to occupy the first three spots in the batting order, followed by Howard, Shane Victorino, Raul Ibanez, Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz. Utley was moved up from his usual No. 3 spot and said the switch doesnt alter his approach at the plate. Utley appears to be at full strength after dealing with knee and hip injuries. Victorino has been bothered by a sore back and doesnt expect to miss any time this postseason, while Polanco and Ibanez have been clutch at the plate lately. Polanco had his fair share of ailments this season and is ready to go against his former Cardinals club. St. Louis has plenty of pop in its lineup too thanks to a trio of veteran sluggers in Pujols, Holliday and Berkman. Pujols led the offense as usual with 37 homers, 99 RBI and 105 runs, and it will be difficult for the fans to watch their hero possibly suit up for the final few times in St. Louis. Pujols will bat third in the lineup in front of possibly Rafael Furcal or John Jay and Allen Craig. Holliday missed two weeks in the middle of the season with a quadriceps injury and was hampered near the end of the regular season because of a damaged tendon in his right middle finger. He will bat cleanup. Holliday had 22 homers and 75 runs batted in to go along with a .296 batting average, his lowest since hitting .286 through 93 games with Oakland back in 2009. The right-handed Holliday did not play in Wednesdays series finale against the Astros, but Berkman did and drove in a run. Berkman batted .301 with 31 homers, 94 RBI and a .412 on-basse percentage, earning himself a one- year contract extension with the club.dddddddddddd Berkman and Carpenter both re-upped with the organization and give the Cardinals some stability if Pujols signs elsewhere. The switch-hitting Berkman will make $12 million in 2012, a 50 percent raise over the one-year, $8 million deal that he inked in December. Freese, batting average leader Yadier Molina and Schumaker round out the rest of the St. Louis lineup. EDGE: PHILLIES STARTING PITCHING The Phillies shocked the world by winning the Lee sweepstakes in the offseason, but they already had a beast on the staff in Halladay. Halladay draws the start for Game 1 and will be looking to duplicate history from last years NLDS, when he threw a no-hitter in Game 1 against the Cincinnati Reds. Halladay registered only the second no-hitter in postseason play -- the first being Don Larsens perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Affectionately known as "Doc", Halladay went 19-6 with a 2.35 earned run average this season. He ranked first in the National League in complete games ( and strikeout-to- walk ratio (6.29), was second in ERA and innings (223 2/3), third in wins and strikeouts (220) and fourth in WHIP (1.04). Halladay is also the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner and was an obvious choice to open the postseason for the Phillies. Lee, meanwhile, will handle pitching duties in Game 2 in south Philly and compiled a 17-8 mark with a 2.40 ERA this season. The lefty won all five of his June starts and did the same in August, while winning seven straight starts from July 30 - Sept. 5. Next in line will be Cole Hamels, who takes the ball in St. Louis for Game 3. Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP, is another left-hander who brings a solid mix pitches to the bump. Mostly known for a nasty changeup, Hamels was 14-9 with a 2.79 ERA this season -- the most wins since going 14-10 in 2008. Game 4, if necessary, will probably see Oswalt take the hill unless the Phillies decide to go with Halladay again or Vance Worley. Worley will most likely end up in the bullpen but had a fascinating season nonetheless. Oswalt didnt have a standout 2011 campaign, however, going just 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA, in a Phillies rotation that led the majors in wins. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who overcame a bad case of shingles this summer, decided to go with Lohse for Game 1 and the right-hander led the club in wins and earned run average by going 14-8 with a 3.39 ERA. Lohse doesnt have overpowering stuff and won six of seven decisions to close out the regular season. Many thought Carpenter would have squared off with Halladay at Citizens Bank Park, but hes expected to open the series at home in Game 3 against Hamels -- a matchup in which the Cards have a slight edge. Garcia or Edwin Jackson could follow Lohse in the second installment of this best-of-five series. Garcia was second on the team with a 13-7 record to go along with a 3.56 ERA, while Jackson compiled a 5-2 mark and a 3.58 ERA. Carpenter could take the mound in Game 3 and shook off a rough start to the season by finishing 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA in 34 starts. He was 1-7 with a 4.47 ERA by mid-June and certainly turned things around. Westbrook could be the odd man out on the staff and tallied a 12-9 ledger with a 4.66 earned run average. Unfortunately for the Cardinals Wainwrights Spring Training setback put a damper on the rotation. EDGE: PHILLIES BULLPEN The Phillies unloaded their bullpen in Wednesdays regular-season finale against the Braves, but dont expect them to use that many in the postseason. Ryan Madson was Philadelphias closer and took over the role from the oft- injured Brad Lidge, who will most likely serve as a setup man and has that mind-boggling slider. Madson made 62 appearances this season and recorded a 4-2 mark to go along with 32 saves and a 2.37 ERA. Lefty Antonio Bastardo will join righties Worley, Michael Stutes, Kyle Kendrick and David Herndon in the bullpen. Right-hander Fernando Salas led the Cardinals with 24 saves and was second in appearances with 68 behind righty Jason Mottes 78 games. Motte then took back the closers role at seasons end. Arthur Rhodes and Mark Rzepczynski are the only southpaws in the St. Louis bullpen, which is expected to have Mitchell Boggs, Octavio Dotel and Kyle McClellan at its disposal. Rzepczynski and Dotel were acquired in the Colby Rasmus deal that landed Jackson and Corey Patterson. EDGE: EVEN BENCH La Russa will have Craig, Patterson, Punto, Ryan Theriot, Daniel Descalso and Gerald Laird to choose from off of the bench. Craig had 11 home runs and 40 RBI and Patterson contributed six homers and 36 runs batted in for St. Louis, which has depth and versatility coming off of the pine. Craig has the most upside since hes fresh from filling in for an injured Holliday. Punto stepped in for an injured Furcal as well. Furcal should be ready for Saturdays game. The Phillies match up well with St. Louis reserves and some may even get a starting nod depending on who is on the mound. John Mayberry could be one of those candidates and cracked 15 homers to go along with 49 RBI this season. Francisco lost his job to Brown and Pence during the season and earned a spot on the bench for Manuels club. Ross Gload, Wilson Valdez, Brian Schneider and Pete Orr are also at Philadelphias call. Brown will most likely be sent home for the winter and never panned out as a top prospect this season. EDGE: CARDINALS PROGNOSIS Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee had arguably his easiest 162-game season to date with that dominant rotation made up of aces Halladay, Lee and Hamels. Those three arms carried the Phillies to where they are right now and even more pressure will be put upon their shoulders this postseason. The Phillies lineup appears healthy and back in the groove after that eight-game slide, and must get hits at a rapid rate to avoid last years collapse in the NLCS. St. Louis got in by the skin of its teeth and hopes to keep the proverbial gas pedal on the floor. The Cardinals are the underdogs for sure in this matchup with the determined Phillies, but dont tell that to Pujols, Berkman, Holliday or Carpenter. The Cards arent satisfied with barely making the playoffs and would enjoy nothing more than to shock the world by upending the majors best team. They have a slight edge by going 6-3 in the regular season series. Prediction: PHILLIES IN FIVE ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Matt Harvey will try to rehab his injured right elbow without reconstructive surgery, a move the young ace hopes is going to keep him on the mound for the New York Mets next season. Tommy John surgery remains a possibility. Harvey will soon begin a strengthening and throwing program designed to last as long as six to eight weeks. If he feels pain or other symptoms that hinder his pitching, he likely will need the operation -- which probably would sideline him for 2014. "Theres always a risk to having surgery. Theres obviously going to be a risk not to have surgery. Its not a 100 per cent procedure, although its definitely getting a lot better," Harvey said. "I believe if I can rehab, Id rather bet on myself doing the work to stay out of getting surgery than having the surgery." The decision was announced Tuesday night at Citi Field, one day after Harvey was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Florida to get a second opinion on his right elbow. The 24-year-old was diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament by Mets doctors on Aug. 26. Harvey said Andrews tested his elbow and told him he believed it was "very stable." "Ive never had pain in my actual elbow area where the UCL is," Harvey said. "And just for me it felt like, why jump into surgery in a situation where I never had the tingling, the numbness, the shooting pain in my elbow that are usually the symptoms of needing that surgery? For me, if a rehab process of strengthening is the way to go, in my mind thats what I wanted to do." At a long-awaited news conference just minutes before the Mets played the San Francisco Giants, general manager Sandy Alderson indicated theres no harm in trying the throwing program. He said even if Harvey rehabs for two months only to require Tommy John surgery anyway, the right-hander should be back for the 2015 season. "We may know nothing at the end of this period of time, or we may know something early in the process," Alderson said. Stunned by the news last month, Harvey said he would do everything he could to avoid surgery. He spoke with other pitchers who had similar injuries and didnt need the operation, including Philadelphia right-hander Roy Halladay. Harvey was so encouraged that a day after his diagnosis, he tweeted that he would be back on the mound next April. Still, the Mets maintained that no decision would be made for a few weeks, until the swelling subsided and Harvey was re-examined. In the meantime, he was shut down for the rest of the season. "The last three weeks have been pretty tough," Harvey said. "Obviously, I want to be on the field and I want to be pitching, and (being) kind of in that area of not knowing whats going on is tough. Its a tough process. But everything feels completely normal." Tommy John surgery has become a common procedure for pitchers, with a great many making successful comebacks after their damaged ligaments were replaced. The recovery and rehabilitation, however, usually takes at least a year. "Im still very optimistic," Harvey said. "But I know if there is a red flag during that (throwing program) that something needs to be done." Harvey started the All-Star game for the National League on his home field in July. He is 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 178 1-3 innings. The seventh pick in the 2010 amateur draft, Harvey blossomed into one of baseballs most dominant pitchers this year -- his first full season in the majors. His 98 mph fastball and polished off-speed pitches gave hope to a foundering franchise that is finishing up its fifth straight losing season since moving into Citi Field. Harvey and Zack Wheeler were the first to arrive from a crop of touted young pitchers the Mets have pinned their future on. New York captain David Wright cited all the hard-throwing talent in the minors as one reason he signed a $138 million, eight-year contract last winter to stay with the team. With more than $40 million in player salaries coming off the payroll after this season, the Mets expect to be active in free agency. They have long fancied themselves a 2014 contender, but Harvey certainly is a lynchpin. "I think theres some ambiguity of course at this point, and maybe through the next couple of months. There may be ambiguity beyond that," Alderson said. "I dont think its going to affect our off-season planning as much as has been speculated. One thing we have is a great deal of starting pitching depth -- some of it untested at the minor league level. But we have a lot of confidence in the quality and quantity of our starting pitching. So hopefully Matt is part of that rotation next year, but if hes not, I dont foresee us working hard to fill his spot from outside the organization." Wheeler walked a career-high six Tuesday night in New Yorks 8-5 loss to the Giants. LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- New sports could be added to the Summer Olympics by cutting less competitive events within existing sports, IOC presidential candidate Denis Oswald said Monday. Oswald said a "more creative approach" is needed to establish the sports program in the wake of the IOCs handling of wrestlings Olympic status. "If you streamline some sports and keep only their events which are really universal, you could go further," Oswald said at a news conference to detail his campaign platform in the six-man race to succeed Jacques Rogge. "This space can go to different sports so that we can really create fresh blood within the program." Oswald said he is "pretty convinced" that wrestling will return to the Olympics after being eliminated in February from the core list for the 2020 Games in a process that was designed to bring in a new sport to fulfil the 28-sport limit. Wrestling, squash and a joint baseball-softball bid made the IOC shortlist last week for inclusion as an additional sport in 2020. A final decision will be made at the IOC session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, two days before the Sept. 10 presidential election. If wrestling wins the vote, no new sport will be brought in. "I was very surprised that was wrestling was eliminated," Oswald said. "I think there were other ways to warn them. At the end, the wish was to have a new sport." Oswald is competing against IOC vice-presidents Thomas Bach of Germany and Ng Ser Miang of Singapore, Richard Carrion of Puerto Rico, C.K. Wu of Taiwan and Sergei Bubka of Ukraine to replace Rogge, who steps down after completing a full 12-year mandate. Oswald picked up on widespread dissatisfaction with the sports program review, which left youth-oriented sports such as wakeboarding and roller sports shut out. The IOC has imposed a cap of 28 sports and 10,500 athletes to help host cities control costs and prepare for staging the 16-day event. "Its not necessary to stick to 28 sports," Oswald told reporters. "Every sport can make a certain effort, then you could have more than 28. There are some events which are pretty similar in which the athletes can win." Even in established sports, only "four or five nations" were likely to win medals in some events, the longtime rowing federation president said. Oswald also spoke against a proposed "United World Championship" to be held every four years for Olympic and non-Olympic sports. The project was put forward by judo federation president Marius Vizer after his election last Friday as head of the umbrella body SportAccord. "I dont think there is any city in the world which can accommodate such a games," said Oswald, who oversaw preparations for the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2012 London Games. "Everyone being a bit realistic realizes it is not possible." Oswald also proposes simplifying the process of cities bidding to host an Olympics, which currently involves bid officials travelling to make presentations to sports conferences and regional Olympic meetings. The 100-plus IOC members who will elect Rogges successor could also be given more work and responsibility under Oswalds leadership. "I think we should make better use of the members we have. I know many of them are willing to do more," he said. Oswald said it was "very difficult to know" how his election prospects shaped up. Still, his commitment to an IOC campaign has ruled him out of consideration for the presidency of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which becomes vacant in November. Oswald, with a background in sports law and as an arbitrator on the Court of Arbitration for Sport, has been mentioned as a possible WADA candidate, along with IOC vice-president Craig Reedie of Britain and former IOC medical director Patrick Schamasch. "The two things are not compatible. I had to make a choice," Oswald said. "WADA is no longer a consideration for me." Oswald calls his platform "My 5 Rings." He said he will present his detailed manifesto to IOC members in the next few weeks. All six candidates will speak to the members in Lausanne on July 4. wholesale jerseys . "Im going to send Webbie a six-pack (of beer) tonight," she said. Webb wasnt sure that would help. "Ill probably drink one and go to sleep," the Australian veteran said. The two players set up a Sunday showdown between former HSBC champions after finishing off their third rounds with identical birdies over three of the last five holes Saturday to separate themselves slightly from the rest of the crowded leaderboard. Webb, the 2011 winner, shot a 70 to move to 11-under 205, one stroke ahead of 2012 champion Stanford, who had a 69. They both have a chance to be the first repeat champion of the tournament, although on two different courses. Both players picked up their first HSBC crown at Singapores Tanah Merah Country Club and this years event is being played at the Sentosa Golf Club. Still, Stanford said, there are enough other quality players within striking range after a momentum-shifting day that anybody could claim the title. "Its really not worth looking at (the leaderboard)," she said. "You just know a lot of people are going to be at the top." Among those chasing Webb and Stanford are Spains Azahara Munoz, who fired an eagle and four birdies for a 5-under 67, the low round of the day; and Taiwans Teresa Lu, who gave up her LPGA membership in 2010 to concentrate on playing in Japan. Both are tied for third at 8-under 208. Americas Paula Creamer, who briefly held the lead with Webb and Munoz on Saturday, had six birdies to go with three bogeys to sit in fifth place at 7 under. Morgan Pressel of the United States was at 6 under, Norways Suzann Pettersen was another stroke back at 5 under, and Swedens Caroline Hedwall and South Koreas Na Yeon Choi were in joint eighth at 4 under.dddddddddddd Webb, a seven-time major winner, led the first two rounds in Singapore, but started out slowly on Saturday. She played her front nine at even par and then bogeyed the 10th hole to go to 1 over, allowing the rest of the field to close the gap. "Even when I was not giving myself a lot of good birdie opportunities early on, I had to tell myself its Saturday, theres plenty of golf left to be played and just to be patient," she said. "And fortunately I listened to myself for a change." Webb turned it around on the 153-yard, par-3 14th hole, where she struck her tee shot to within a couple feet of the hole for an easy birdie putt. Next came a chip shot from the fairway on the 16th which rolled in for birdie to give her a two-stroke lead again. Stanford stayed with Webb, though, as the other challengers fell back. Not to be outdone on the 14th, the American placed her tee shot even closer than Webbs -- a mere inches -- leading to birdie. She matched Webbs birdie again on the 16th, and both players closed the round with birdies on the 18th. If either veteran slips in the final round, however, Munoz and Lu are right behind them. Both players are looking for their second LPGA titles. Munoz captured her only tournament at the 2012 Sybase Match Play Championship, while Lu won hers at last years Mizuno Classic. Defending champion Stacy Lewis disappointing week, meanwhile, looks likely to end her streak of 13 consecutive top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour. Lewis shot a 73 on Saturday, leaving her far down the leaderboard in joint-42nd place. Lewis, the reigning Womens British Open champion, is only three away from matching Webbs LPGA record of 16 consecutive top-10 finishes, set in 1998-99. ' ' '

MIAMI -- A questionable substitution by the coach, more foul trouble for the superstar, and bad free throw shooting by just about everybody ruined Oklahoma Citys chances in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. All that didnt wreck the Thunders hopes of winning the series. The Thunder trail the Miami Heat 2-1 after a 91-85 loss on Sunday in which they blew a 10-point lead in the third quarter. Kevin Durant went to the bench in foul trouble and Scott Brooks compounded the problem by yanking Russell Westbrook shortly after, both All-Stars watching when the game got away from the Thunder. Oklahoma City was in worse trouble in the last round, dropping the first two games against the San Antonio Spurs. So they know they can climb out of the hole theyre in this time. "This is another great opportunity to show what becoming a champion is all about. You know, its not something that ever has come easy," said guard Derek Fisher, who has won five of them. "Every team that has won a championship has earned the right to be champions. And so were faced with another opportunity again tomorrow night to come together as a team and be confident in who we are and figure out a way to come out here and win a game. You know, things turn a great deal in these series with one game, and we have the opportunity to turn it tomorrow." Game 3 turned quickly, mostly because of the Thunders own mistakes. Durant picked up his fourth foul with 5:41 left and the Thunder leading by six. Westbrook was taken out 40 seconds later for Fisher, who converted a four-point play before it all fell apart for Oklahoma City. The Thunder twice fouled shooters behind the arc, made only 6 of 11 free throws in the quarter, and when the game was getting away from his team, Brooks kept Westbrook parked on the bench for the remainder of the period. Westbrook appeared angry when taken out, slamming his hand against a chair. He said he was upset with himself, and Brooks said there was no issue between them Monday. "Thats over with. Were moving on to Game 4," Brooks said. "When Kevin got the fourth foul, that kind of changes the dynamic of that game because Kevin, I think he had 23 points at that time, things were going very well. So there was a lot of times that we had other things that we had to figure out. But I thought that stretch where we fouled the two 3-point shooters really was a big part of their comeback, and then we missed five free throws in that stretch, and as you know, were the best free throw shooting team in the league." Hard to tell in this series, though. The Thunder, who shot 80.6 per cent during the regular season, were only 15 of 24 (62.5 per cent) on Sunday and 54 of 77 (70 per cent) during the series. With a young core age 23 and under, the Thunder acknowledged some jitters before Game 1, but Durant said that isnt the problem now. "Weve just got to make them next game," he said. "I wouldnt say its nerves because we miss a free throw, and then hit a big 3 after that or get a big stop and then hit a layup. I dont know, man. Weve just got to do a better job next game. Hopefully we make all of our free throws." Durant has picked up five fouls in each of the last two games, forced to spend precious time on the bench and hurting his second-half aggressiveness as he tries to defend LeBron James. He said he didnt think all five on Sunday should have been called, but the Thunder need him to be careful to avoid further trouble, particularly with Sixth Man of the Year James Harden averaging only 11.7 points on 41 per cent shooting. Game 3 was bad for the Thunder. The overall situation, they said, could be much worse. "Weve still got four games to play, and at the end of the day, we win a game tomorrow, and then its the best of three with two games on our home court," centre Kendrick Perkins said. "As we all see, the team that gets the win always gets the momentum. At the end of the day, were just down one game, and its not the end of the world. "We take away a couple turnovers in the fourth quarter, a couple silly fouls that we made, and we missed nine free throws. We do that, our chances are high of winning the game." cheap nfl jerseys . -- A report commissioned by Joe Paternos family says the late coach did nothing wrong in his handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal and portrays Paterno as the victim of a "rush to injustice" created by former FBI director Louis Freehs investigation of the case for Penn State. cheap jerseys from china .J. After some shaky performances coming out of the Olympic break, the Coyotes had a strong night in their own end, blocking shots and limiting scoring opportunities. Phoenix held Vancouver to 12 shots until midway through the third period. Smith made some tough saves down the stretch for his third shutout of the season and 27th in his career, helping Phoenix move ahead of Vancouver to tie Winnipeg for ninth in the Western Conference. Eddie Lack kept Vancouver in it with 31 saves, but the Canucks were unable get much going offensively to lose for the ninth time in 10 games. Both teams needed a jump-start after slipping down the Western Conference pecking order. Vancouver lost seven straight games before the Olympic break and followed a victory over St. Louis by losing to Minnesota, then Ottawa. Adding to the Canucks problems, Daniel Sedin, tied for the team lead in points, suffered a lower-body injury against the Senators and was out against the Coyotes. The team also dealt veteran goalie Robert Luongo to Florida earlier Tuesday. Phoenix has been inconsistent since starting the season strong, following wins against some of the NHLs best teams with losses against some of the worst. Despite saying they needed to play with urgency, the Coyotes have laboured since the Olympic break ended, earning one point in three games. Phoenix has had trouble holding leads, coughing it up five times in the past 11 games, including Sundays 4-2 loss to the Blues, when they gave up four goals in the third period..dddddddddddd Vancouver had a similar problem against the Senators, allowing four straight goals after going up 2-0. The Coyotes and Canucks played with a testiness expected between two teams scrapping for a playoff spot, with plenty of hitting, pushing and shoving throughout the first period. Phoenix had good pressure in the period and broke through late when Vermette fought off two Canucks and took a couple of swipes before knocking in a rebound for his 22nd of the season. The Coyotes kept up the pressure in the second period, but Lack was sharp, making some tough saves, particularly during an early Phoenix flurry. Vancouver couldnt find any holes in Phoenixs defence, though, going 13 minutes spanning the second and third periods without a shot on goal. The Coyotes thought they had a 2-0 lead when Mikkel Boedker scored midway through the third period. But it was waved off because Vermette, who was being held down by two Canucks players, was in the crease. It didnt matter the way they were playing defence and Smith was seeing pucks in his crease. They were just glad to finally beat the Thunder. Shawn Marion scored 19 points, Vince Carter added 18 and the Mavericks rolled past Oklahoma City 109-86 on Sunday night, ending a seven-game regular-season losing streak to the Thunder. Dallas beat Oklahoma City for the first time since Jan. 2, 2012. In addition to the seven straight regular-season losses to the Thunder, the Mavericks also were swept in a 2012 playoff series. "We played well," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "Look, theyre down a great player, so we caught a break there. But youve still got to go out and play and theyve had a great record with and without Westbrook. Its a game we needed. We need every one, the battle that were in. We did good things. We had to clean some things up at halftime with rebounding. We did. We had four good quarters." Oklahoma City played without three usual starters -- the injured Kendrick Perkins and Thabo Sefolosha in addition to Westbrook. With the team wanting to ease Westbrook back into gear after his most recent knee surgery -- which cost him 27 games -- he was given the game off to rest. The Dallas game was the opener of what will be three back-to-backs on the Thunder schedule by March 25. Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said Westbrook will return Monday when the Thunder visit the Chicago Bulls. Kevin Durant scored 30 points for Oklahoma City, his 26th straight game of 25 points or more, the longest such streak since Michael Jordan did so in 40 straight games during the 1986-87 season. But with most of the Thunders other players struggling offensively, that wasnt enough to make up for Westbrooks absence. Brooks said his team lacked energy and effort and Durant agreed with that assessment, saying the Thunder "just coasted" as they fell two games behind San Antonio in the race for the top spot in the Western Conference. Durant refused to blame the absence of the three starters for the teams lacklustre performance. "There is no excuse," he said. "Weve got to figure it out. Weve each got to do it. Were pros. ... Weve got to act like we care. It will be all right..ddddddddddddWeve got another one tomorrow." Dirk Nowitzki added 17 points and Jose Calderon had 16 points for Dallas, which entered the game tied for seventh in the Western Conference standings. The Mavericks, who begin an eight-game homestand on Monday against the Boston Celtics, became only the third Western Conference team to win this season in Oklahoma City, joining Portland and the Los Angeles Clippers. "This is a tough place to play," Nowitzki said. "Obviously, Westbrook getting the night off, that helped us, but its really only a good thing if you win the game. Ive lost plenty of games in my career before when people were resting or hurt, but we still lost. Its only an advantage if you take care of business and I thought we did a good job." Porous defence, which Brooks has said has been at the root of Oklahoma Citys recent slump, again was an issue against the Mavericks. Dallas shot 53.3 per cent from the field and was even better from 3-point range, finishing 13 of 24. Calderon and Carter each went 4 for 8 from behind the arc and two other Mavericks (Marion and Nowitzki) had at least two 3-pointers apiece. Outside of Durant and Serge Ibaka (19 points), Oklahoma City struggled offensively. The Thunder shot 36.7 per cent from the field and never made a serious run during the second half after trailing 59-48 at halftime. Dallas led 91-70 entering the fourth quarter and the Mavericks eventually led by 26 points. NOTES: The Thunder signed G Mustafa Shakur to a 10-day contract on Sunday. Shakur, who has spent time in the NBA Development League this season, hadnt played in the NBA since appearing in 22 games for the Washington Wizards during the 2010-11 season before entering Sundays game with 6:16 left. He spent time on Oklahoma Citys roster during the 2009-10 season but never played. ... Carter raised his career total to 23,010 points, becoming the 27th NBA player to pass the 23,000-point mark with a 3-pointer with 2:17 left in the third quarter. ... Nowitzki was called for a technical foul with 7:52 left in the third quarter by official Derrick Collins after Nowitzki complained about being called for travelling by Collins. ... Dallas Stars 6, Winnipeg Jets 4 - Saturdays loss drops the Jets to a game below five hundred, both on the season overall and at home. It also extends the teams home winless skid to six. Their last win at MTS Centre was November 15 over Philadelphia. The Jets will play seven of the next 10 on the road, starting with a two-game trip -- Monday in Columbus and Tuesday in Buffalo (both games on TSN Jets, TSN Radio 1290). The Stars opened the scoring with Tyler Seguin getting his 16th; the goal coming off a bad line change by the Jets. Matt Halischuk with his third tied the game, with Mark Scheifele and Michael Frolik drawing assists. Scheifele now has seven points in his last 10 games, while Frolik has eight points in his last 11 games. Halischuk left the game later in the first with an upper-body injury. Initial indication is the injury is more than day-to-day. But the game did not stay tied for long. As was the case all game, one goal was quickly followed by another and 4:12 later Valeri Nuchushkin, the Stars 18-year-old rookie, made a great move on Ondrej Pavelec to score his fifth. A neutral zone turnover by the Jets contributed to this goal. Stars outshot the Jets 11-8 in the first. After failing to score on a five-on-three early in the second (second time in as many games after going three for three on their first three two man advantages), the Jets power play clicked for the fourth time in three games with Blake Wheeler tying the game, Olli Jokinen and Dustin Byfuglien assisting on the goal. But 48 seconds later, Jamie Benn with his 8th regained the lead for the Stars. One minute and seven seconds later, the Jets tied the game again, and again it was Wheeler. It was his 11th of the year, his sixth in six games and back-to-back two-goal games. Bryan Little with the assist to give him 22 points in the last 22 games. Then the turning point. Anthony Peluso was given five for boarding and a game misconduct for a hit on Alex Goligoski. The hit was a little late and appeared to catch Goligoski in the numbers and will certainly be reviewed by the Department of Player Safety. The Jets played the remainder of the game with 10 forwards. The Stars scored twice on the major penalty with Benn and Seguin each getting their second goal of the game. The Jets dominated the early part of the period; at one point outshooting Dallas 14-4 but in the end the shots were 16-13 Jets. To start the third, the Jets killed the remaining seconds on the power play then went to the attack and had a number of scoring chances but could not beat Kari Lehtonen. Then another defensive breakdown and Colton Sceviour on a breakaway beat Al Montoya to make it 6-3. Montoya replaced Pavelec to start the third. For Sceviour, it was his first NHL goal. Ollie Jokinen closed out the scoring with his 8th of the year with 1:41 left but the game would end 6-4. Jokinen has now surpassed his goal total from last year. Devin Setoguchi and Chris Thorburn drew assists on the goal. Shots in the third favoured the Jets 14-8 and 38-32 overall. Dallas is now 8-2-1 in their last 11 on the road. The Jets were again minus Evander Kane, although it appears he should be ready for Mondays game. Adam Pardy played in place of Keaton Ellberby. Pardy had been out the last eight. Statistically, Byfuglien lead in ice time at 27:49 and also in shots on goal with seven. He directed 15 shots at the Stars goal, with five being blocked and another three wide. Jokinen won 11 of 19 face-offs, Little nine of 16. Sergie Gonchar had a four-point game for Dallas and now has 48 points in 52 games against the Jets. Wheeler has eight points in seven career games against Dallas. Needless to say, it was a dejected Jets dressing room with comments ranging from "not acceptable" to "embarrassing." For coach Claude Noel, it was a "disappointing game and not only the result. Not a very intelligent game. Their first two goals came off bad line changes, the five minute major was costly, we wanted to contain their top line and we couldnt. It was a game we chased and every time we tied it, they would go ahead soon after. We didnt accomplish what we set out to do on this three game home stand (0-2-1). It was a step back today. I have not seen us play this way as a group for a long time. But we will regroup and start again." The Jets are now 3-11-3 inside their Central Division with the next three games against Eastern Conference teams (Columbus, Buffalo, Florida), although until this year Columbus was a Western Conference team. cheap jerseys . Reyes hit a two-run triple to give New York the lead in the seventh inning and the Mets held on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Tuesday night. "Ive never had a player like that where he is so exciting to watch," Collins said. "Ill tell you what, when he hits a ball in the gap or down the line, he is right out of the batters box -- and he wants it, badly." Reyes now has a major league-high 11 triples but Tuesday nights was his first on the road. "I take them at any time," Reyes said. "It doesnt matter. A triple is a triple no matter where I play." With a pair of hits Tuesday, he extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Reyes is 22-for-48 during the streak. Reyes triple came off reliever Marco Estrada and wasted an impressive start from Milwaukees Shaun Marcum, who pitched six scoreless innings. Prince Fielder hit his 15th home run of the season, a solo shot to give the Brewers the lead in the sixth. But that was the only big mistake of the night for Mets starter Chris Capuano (4-6), a longtime Brewers player making his return to Milwaukee. Capuano downplayed his return to Milwaukee going into the game but acknowledged afterward that it was "a little strange" to be on the visiting side at Miller Park. "Once you get on the mound and you lock in on that target, after you let that first pitch go, all that other stuff disappears," Capuano said. "Its just a matter of getting yourself to that point with the minimum amount of distraction possible." Capuano was with the Brewers organization from 2004 to 2010 and made the all-star team in 2006 before his career got off track because of injuries. He received warm applause from the crowd when he took the mound at the beginning of Tuesdays game, as well as in his first plate appearance. And he nearly homered in the fifth, sending a deep fly ball to centre that was caught at the wall by Carlos Gomez. Collins said Capuano has pitched better than his record would iindicate.dddddddddddd "Hes really pitched good," Collins said. "He deserves three or four more wins than what hes got. He kept us in the game all night tonight. Really was very, very good. When you make only one bad pitch, thats a pretty good outing." Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 17th save. Estrada (1-3) took the loss. Tuesdays game came as a heat wave hit Milwaukee, with 94-degree temperatures at first pitch. The Brewers were nearly as hot as a team, having won 20 of their past 26 games coming into Tuesdays game -- most recently a four-game road sweep of the Florida Marlins. Marcum held the Mets scoreless, giving up two hits in six innings. But he threw 108 pitches and gave up four walks, and Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he struggled with his command. "He still finds a way to get people out and he still finds a way to keep the run total down to where youve got a real good chance to win," Roenicke said. "If he goes out there and battles like that and they only score one off him, almost every night, were going to win." Carlos Beltran was back in the lineup for the Mets after leaving Sundays game against Atlanta with a right leg bruise. X-rays were negative, and Beltran said before the game that he still had some soreness after receiving treatment during the Mets off day Monday. "It didnt seem to affect him at all," Collins said. Beltran got off to a rough start, struggling to field a first-inning line drive off the bat of Corey Hart, although the play was ruled a hit. But he recovered to make several good plays later in the game. And Collins was happy his team got through a game without any more injuries. "We didnt lose anybody tonight," Collins said. NOTES: The Brewers drafted 3B Trent Boras in the 30th round of the first-year player draft on Tuesday. He is the son of agent Scott Boras, who represents Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder. ... One round earlier, the Brewers selected right-hander David Lucroy, the younger brother of Lucroy. ... Reyes singled in the fifth, extending his hitting streak. ' ' '

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Gabriel Dumont scored twice to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 3-1 over the Abbotsford Heat in American Hockey League action Saturday night. Dumont scored in the opening minute of the third period to give his club a 2-1 lead after tying the game late in the second. Maxime Macenauer added an empty netter to clinch the win. Dustin Tokarski made 26 saves in the victory. Since losing in a shootout to Abbotsford on Dec. 22, Hamilton (17-14-4) has won five straight games, moving into seventh place in the Western Conference. Markus Granlund scored for Abbotsford (23-11-2), while Joey MacDonald stopped 24 shots in the loss. The Heat opened the scoring at 11:31 of the first thanks to a great effort and a little luck. Kane Lafranchise stretched to keep a puck onside during a power play, skated in and tried to pass it in front. The centring feed deflected off a Bulldog stick right to Granlund, who roofed it on Tokarski for his 14th of the season. Mike Blunden was the most dangerous Bulldog in the first period, hitting the post in the opening minutes and then getting two quality cracks with less than 20 seconds left. He one-timed a feed from Martin St. Pierre from the low slot, which MacDonald kicked out, and then MacDonald gobbled up the rebound attempt by Blunden to sustain the Heats lead heading into the intermission. But a smooth move by Blunden led to the equalizer in the second period. Nick Tarnasky rang the puck behind the net to Blunden, who pulled it out front and quickly put a shot on net. Dumont was in the crease to chip the puck home for his first of the game at 16:48. Dumont gave his club the lead just 49 seconds into the third. Sven Andrighetto walked off the boards and took a shot on net. The five-foot-10 Dumont battled for position with 6-6 defenceman Chris Breen and shovelled home his seventh of the year, beating MacDonald five-hole. MLB Jerseys China . Do you think its time for both men to be elected to the Hall? In their first years of eligibility, Bonds and Clemens fell well short of the 75 per cent of votes needed to be enshrined. Clemens got 37.6 per cent of the ballots cast, while Bonds trailed slightly behind with 36.2 per cent. Both dipped slightly this year - Clemens to 35.4 per cent and Bonds to 34.7 per cent. While their on-field credentials are never in doubt, how they allegedly arrived at them over the course of their careers has been subject to much debate and speculation. Bonds is the all-time home run king with 762 over the course of his storied 22-year career. He also holds the single season home run record of 73 which he set back in 2001. He has also been named National League MVP seven times - far and away the most of any player in the history of the game and was a runner-up for the honour twice. Bonds also led the National League in walks 12 times, including his final season in 2007 (at the age of 42) and is the all-time leader in that category with 2,558. Not to mention 14 All-Star teams and eight Golld Gloves.dddddddddddd Clemens, meanwhile, won American League MVP honours in 1986, is a seven-time Cy Young award winner and has earned more individual awards than any other pitcher in baseball history. He finished his 24-year career with an impressive 354-184 record, a 3.12 ERA and 4,672 strikeouts (the third most all-time). Clemens also led the league in wins four times, was a seven-time ERA leader and five-time strikeout champion. However, its impossible to ignore the shadow that the alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs has cast on both of their careers. Both men have denied using PEDs and have both been acquitted in federal court of lying to a grand jury and congressional committee, respectively. Bonds, however, was later convicted of an obstruction charge while rumours and speculation continue to run rampant around both former stars. While Bonds and Clemens are the two highest-profile names, other Hall-eligible players who have been painted with similar brushes are also having trouble garnering votes. Rafael Palmeiro, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Mike Piazza and Jeff Bagwell are also still on the outside. So the question remains - should Bonds, Clemens or any other player allegedly connected to PED use be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame? As always, Its Your! Call. ' ' '

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Steven Lenhart scored twice in the final 11 minutes to help the MLS-leading San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw against English Premier League side Swansea City in an international friendly Tuesday night. The Swans, who had goals from Danny Graham and Chico in the 41st and 60th minutes, went 1-1-1 on their preseason U.S. tour. Lenhart, a second-half substitute, cashed home a beautiful square pass from Shea Salinas to bring San Jose back within a goal in the 79th. Then he headed home a curling cross from Rafael Baca deep on the right wing to tie it in the 85th. Graham, the Swans leading scorer last season with 12 goals in EPL play, took advantage of a botched back pass to give Swansea the lead just before halftime. Graham scooped up a loose ball after an attempted back pass from San Jose defender Ramiro Corrales failed to connect with goalkeeper David Bingham. Graham rounded Bingham and easily slotted the ball home. Chico, a Spanish centre back signed by Swansea City earlier this month from Genoa, powered home a header in the 60th minute despite Binghams efforts at the back post. Leroy Lita had a couple of late chances for Swansea, but couldnt put either ball on goal. The Earthquakes, who rested almost all of their starters after playing Chicago in an MLS match Saturday, looked disjointed before bringing on several of their top players in the last 30 minutes. Tampa Bay hopes to avoid a fifth loss in six games this evening, but must contend against Toronto Blue Jays ace Ricky Romero in the second contest of a three-game series. The Rays posted an 11-4 mark from Sept. 3-18, notching six wins over the wild card-leading Red Sox in that span. However, they have lost four of their last five games, with last nights 5-1 defeat dropping them 2 1/2 games behind Boston, which had its game versus New York rained out. Those two clubs will play a doubleheader on Sunday. David Price took the loss for Tampa Bay as he committed a pair of errors in the third inning, getting charged with five runs -- two earned -- over his six frames. "David had great stuff tonight," said Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon. "Not just good stuff, he had great stuff tonight, and those two plays pretty much undid us." Brandon Morrow hurled seven scoreless innings for the Blue Jays, who got a solo homer and RBI single from Kelly Johnson to win for the sixth time in nine games. "Im trying to finish strong," Morrow told Torontos website. "Last time was a good way to start and I kept it going this time. Just being aggressive and even when I was falling bbehind in counts, first couple of innings, not taking anything off to try and make a pitch.dddddddddddd" Tampa Bay cant afford to give away runs tonight as it faces Romero, who has won eight of his past nine decisions. Romero is 15-10 with a 2.98 earned run average in 31 starts this year, but was unable to secure a third straight victory on Monday versus the Angels despite going nine innings. He gave up two runs, both on solo homers, and struck out five as Toronto won in the 10th inning. The 26-year-old left has pitched at least six innings in each of his last 12 starts and is 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four starts versus the Rays this season. The Rays start Jeff Niemann, who is aiming for a third straight victory. The right-hander is coming off a victory in Boston last Saturday as he gave up two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. That came one outing after he limited the Orioles to a pair of runs in 7 2/3 frames of a victory. Niemann, 28, is 11-7 with a 3.95 ERA on the year and holds a career mark of 4-3 with a 5.03 ERA in 10 career meetings with the Blue Jays. He has split a pair of starts against them this season. Tampa Bay is 10-6 against the Blue Jays this season, though the Jays ended a five-game slide in the series with a 7-3 win on Aug. 29 at Rogers Centre before winning last nights game. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Quiet clubhouse. Quick turnaround. The Detroit Tigers hope that just as they did five years ago, theyll rebound after losing their AL division series opener to the New York Yankees and ride the spurt to the World Series. "You cant put too much in one game. Obviously you want to jump out on top early, but its good to have short-term memory loss," Brandon Inge said after Saturday nights 9-3 defeat in the rain-interrupted opener. "If you harp on one loss, if you go into a losing streak like you do in the middle of the season, youre out, Youre done. So you have to put the losses, the bad games behind you really quickly." Doug Fister and Al Alburquerque were hit hard by the Yankees. Robinson Cano drove in six runs with a grand slam and two RBI doubles, leading the New York offence. With the score 1-all, Cano put the Yankees ahead in the fifth with a double off Fister, a ball that hit the top of the left-field fence and bounced back, maybe an inch shy of a homer. Brett Gardner pounced when Fister hung an 0-2 breaking ball in the sixth, driving a two-run single to right-centre for a 4-1 lead. "I really wanted to bounce the curveball. I left it up a little bit," Fister said. "He put it where he needed to put it." Three batters later, Alburquerque relieved and Cano made sure there was no doubt about this one, depositing his second pitch into the second deck in right field. When reporters approached Alburquerque in the clubhouse after the game, he waved them away. "To me that was a no brainer," Leyland said. "Albuquerque has had a tremendous ratio of swings and misses. He had only faced him one time. He had struck him out." Cano didnt miss this time. It was his fourth grand slam in less than two months. There was no coming back for the Tigers, who looked like they were still resting after clinching the AL Central on Sept. 16. Fister, the loser, gave up six runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings, failing to live up to his 8-1 record after Detroit acquired him from Seattle. "Actually I thought Fister pitched really well," Leyland said. "I thought Fister made one bad pitch all night. I thought that was the pitch to Gardner that he got the base hit on." Winner Ivan Nova did even better than CC Sabathia, whose heralded start against Justin Verlander was cut short when rain caused a 23-hour, 29-minute delay and suspension in the middle of second inning Friday night. Nova, a rookie, allowed four hits in 6 1-3 innings, pitching scoreless ball until he was charged with two runs in the ninth. Detroit got its only runs Saturday in the ninth on Alex Avilas bases-loaded forceout off Luis Ayala and Ryan Raburns RBI single. Game 2 is set for Sunday afternoon, with Detroits Max Scherzer (15-9) opposed by New Yorks Freddy Garcia (12-. The series then shifts to Detroit on Monday, skipping a travel day. All in all, not too dissimilar from 2006, when the Yankees spurted out to a five-run lead in the opener and coasted to an 8-4 win. The Tigers bounced back to sweep the next three games 4-3, 6-0 and 8-3, causing such tumult that the Yankees dropped Alex Rodriguez to eighth in the batting order for Game 4. While afternoon rain cut short batting practice, it was dry by the time the game resumed at 8:36 p.m., and a record crowd of 50,940 came out to new Yankee Stadium on the first cool and blustery autumn night. Strangely taking the mound first as the visiting pitcher because of the suspension, Fister worked out of a second-and-third, two-outs jam in the second. That started a streak of 11 straight batters he retired. Former-Tiger Curtis Granderson ended it with a two-out single in the fifth, and Cano followed with his near homer. Umpires spent 4 minutes to go under the stands and review video, then determined the ball bounced back onto the field without touching the fan sitting in the first row, Chris Vitali, a 37-year-old from New Brunswick, N.J. "Everyone in this row spoke about not reaching over and catching a ball," Vitali said. "We said, Dont do it. If its Detroit, fine. Catch it." That was the last good bounce for the Tigers, who twice ran into bad luck in the sixth. In the top of the inning, what would have been a single up the middle by Magglio Ordonez turned into a double-play grounder because Cano sprinted over to cover second with Austin Jackson running and was in place to glove the ball, step on the base and throw to first. Then, after Gardner singled in the bottom half, Derek Jeter hit what normally would have been an inning-ending grounder. But Gardner was running on the pitch and the ball went into right for a single, setting up a six-run inning capped by Canos grand slam. In the fifth, Avila had been thrown out the plate by Jeters relay from Granderson on Jhonny Peraltas single to centre. "Initially I hesitated to make sure that Granderson wasnt going to catch it," Avila said. "The throw was like perfect." It was that type of night. Now the Tigers hope to gain a split before they return home, where they were 50-31 during the regular season. "Win one tomorrow and get out of here 1-1," Verlander said, thinking optimistically, "and go home and got a chance to clinch there." NOTES: Detroit has lost four straight post-season games dating to the 2006 World Series. The Tigers have lost eight of their last 12 post-season games. ... Ah yes, Madison Square Garden, the famed arena in which the host Rangers are 4-0 in Game 7s.PITTSBURGH -- The wrong player was charged with the crime, and the true offender went free and tied the game. Jordan Staal and the Pittsburgh Penguins played as if they were intent on administering their own justice. Staals second of the game and 100th of his career was part of a three-goal outburst in a 6:07 span of the third period as the Penguins beat the New Jersey Devils 4-1 on Saturday night. New Jerseys Petr Sykora was given a double high-sticking penalty 37 seconds into the third, even though television replays clearly showed it was the stick of Patrik Elias that struck Steve Sullivan and drew blood. Elias scored a short-handed goal 1:10 later to tie the game 1-1. "It was unrespectful to the referee for me, but I was trying to help my team and I didnt want to have (Elias) go in for four minutes to the penalty box," Sykora said. "We need him on the (penalty kill). I just got the idea, and it worked out and (Elias) actually got a goal there. After that, (the referee) came up to me, he wasnt happy and I apologized to him." The incident appeared to make Pittsburgh play with anger. The Penguins dominated play the rest of the way, cruising to their third consecutive victory. "We werent too happy on the bench," Staal said. "Obviously, its tough for the refs to catch the right guy sometimes. It was tough to see the guy who should have been in the box score the goal, but the guys definitely rebounded nice off that one." James Neals NHL-leading eighth goal closed out the scoring after Chris Kunitz allowed the Penguins to retake the lead for good with a tally 1:10 after Elias goal. Staal scored his fifth of the season 70 seconds later. "I think Kuny had a great goal to kind of keep us going, put us back in the right direction," Staal said. "And from then on I felt like we pretty much dominated." Pittsburgh outshot New Jersey 15-4 after Elias goal. In the postgame locker room, none of the Penguins showed anger about the penalty-call gaffe. They let their play over the final 18 minutes do their talking. "You could see it pretty clearly it was the wrong guy in the box," said Marc-Andre Fleury, who had 23 saves. "But I guess it turned out all right in the end." Penguins defenceman Kris Letang returned after serving a two-game suspension for boarding, but Pittsburgh still was without star centres Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Crosby (concussion) continues to practise but said Saturday that he needs to see how he will respond to absorbing hits before he return to game action.dddddddddddd Thus far, his teammates have been loath to make much contact with him since he was cleared to handle it last week. Malkin missed his fifth game in a row because of soreness in his right knee. Without their two former scoring champions for the vast majority of the past nine months, usual third-line centre Staal played a game reminiscent of Crosby or Malkin. He scored for the fourth and fifth times this season to give him 100 goals less than six weeks after his 23rd birthday. "Staalsys a guy who flies under the radar with the superstars on this team," Kunitz said. "We know how good he is. Hes proven it year after year. Right now, were missing some guys, and hes going out and proving he can produce the numbers we believe he can always do." All four of the Penguins goals beat former Penguins goalie Johan Hedberg high to the glove side. Neal scored for the seventh time in his past seven games. Brought in at the trade deadline last season to provide needed scoring from the wing, Neal had one goal in 20 regular-season games with the Penguins last season. Elias goal, his second, extended his scoring streak to five games. But it was all downhill after that for the Devils. "We really didnt give ourselves a chance in the third period," Elias said. The flurry of goals -- four in 7:27 -- was out of character for these teams against each other. Last season, Pittsburgh and New Jersey combined for 17 regulation goals in the six-game season series. Only once did a team score more than twice in a game. Fleury, who has allowed four goals in four games against the Devils, made perhaps his best save late in the first period. Fleury got his pad out to stop Adam Henrique, who skated in alone and went to his backhand. NOTES: Elias is the Devils career leading scorer against Pittsburgh. ... Swiss skier Sandro Viletta put in a stellar slalom run to win the gold medal in the Sochi Olympic mens super-combined on Friday. Viletta finished in a combined time of two minutes, 45.20 seconds over the downhill and slalom runs that make up the competition. The winner is the competitor with the fastest total time. Ivica Kostelic of Croatia won his third consecutive Olympic silver medal in the event, posting a total time of 2:45.54. He is the first man to win three Olympic medals in the combined. Kostelic was seventh after the downhill, a strong performance for the technical specialist. The 34-year-old won silver in the combined at the Turin Games, and silver in both the combined and the slalom at the Vancouver Olympics. Christof Innerhofer of Italy demonstrated improved slalom skills to win the bronze medal. Innerhofer has been known as more of a downhill specialist, but he tied technical specialist Kostelic on the slalom portion of the event. Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud was leading the event after the downhill, but finished fourth overall after the slalom, missing a medal by 0.59 seconds. American skiers had won this event at the last two Olympic Games. Vancouver champion Bode Miller struggled through a series of gates high on the slalom course and never recovered enough speed to challenge for the podium. Teammate Ted Ligety, who won the combined in Turin, never looked comfortable on the slalom course and finished well back. Canadian Morgan Pridy had a tough go of it in his first Olympic experience. The Whistler, B.C., native was in 25th place following the downhill. During the slalom, Pridy struggled with his rhythm and finished in 2:50.03. Warm temperatures in the slalom run made course conditions slower. It seemed to be a factor in the downhill as well, with Jansruds time in the ninth starting slot not overly threatened by subsequent skiers. Through the duration of the slalom, skiers fought the soft and wet conditions, many losing the battle and scoring a DNF. wholesale jerseys . LONDON -- Mohamed Salah scored one goal and played a part in the other two as Chelsea strolled to a 3-0 victory over Stoke to recover from back-to-back losses and reclaim the provisional Premier League lead Saturday. Even though Jose Mourinho downplays Chelseas title prospects, his team remain in the mix with a relatively undemanding run-in, apart from a trip to Liverpool. And its Liverpool that can ensure Chelseas stay at the top this weekend is short-lived by winning Sunday at West Ham. This was a routine victory for Chelsea against a Stoke side that presented little attacking threat, and Salah profited on his first start since joining from Basel in January. Salah was left unmarked when he netted the opener in the 32nd minute, and after the break the Egypt winger won the penalty that Frank Lampard first saw saved before netting the rebound. Salah set up Willian to curl in Chelseas third in the 72nd to wrap up a fifth consecutive home win, with the team scoring 17 unanswered goals during a formidable period at Stamford Bridge. The problems are away, having lost the last two league games on the road to struggling sides Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, and at Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their quarterfinal on Wednesday. "Away we have some matches where we must change our profile ... and adapt to the situation," Mourinho said. "If I go to a wedding, I dont go in jeans," he added. "And if I leave my house to go for a walk in Hyde Park I dont go in a smoking (jacket)." Mourinho accepted that it took at least 15 minutes for his team to "recover self-esteem and confidence." Not that Fernando Torres seemed to have any. The misfiring striker started up front again after being dropped for the 3-1 loss in Paris, but did little to convince Mourinho that he should be part of the team for next season. After two early efforts there was little danger from the player whose career has been in a downward spiral since joining Chelsea in 2011 for 50 million pounds (then $80 million) from Liverpool. Torres first struck wide, then had a low close-range effort blocked by Asmir Begovic after Stoke defender Marc Wilson inadvertently chested the ball to him. While Torres has just one goal in 2014, Salah now has two since joining Chelsea in January. From a throw-in, Nemanja Matics cutback reached Salah, who was left completely unchallenged by the Stoke defence to power the ball into the net. "We bought a kid from a different habitat, an Egyptian player playing in Switzerland, we knew the kid was going to take time," Mourinho said of the 21-year-old Salah. "You feel it immediately the connection between him and the crowd." Although Branislav Ivanovic had the ball in the net again for Chelsea before halftime, the goal was ruled out for offside. Instead, the lead was extended after the break, with substitute Eden Hazard involved in the two goals. The penalty was won after the Belgium midfielder flicked the ball onto Salah, who was then brought down by Andy Wilkinson. Although Lampards penalty was saved, he reacted quickly to stab the rebound into the net in the 61st. It was his 250th goal in club football, encompassing his time at West Ham and Swansea before joining Chelsea in 2001. Stokes defence was cut through again with ease for the third goal. Hazard brought the ball forward from inside his own half and squared to Salah. Willian then collected the ball and had time to move forward unchallenged before bending the ball into the top corner. "He was so sharp on the ball," Lampard said of Willian. "The goal was the epitomy of what he does better than anyone I think Ive played with." Whether Chelsea players end up with Premier League winners medals this season remains unclear. Now its about hoping Liverpool slips up at West Ham and then overturning the deficit against PSG on Tuesday and advancing to the Champions League semifinals. wholesale jerseys . BEIJING, China - Top-ranked Novak Djokovic cruised while Serena Williams was made to fight for her win in the China Open on Tuesday. Djokovic put away Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, while Williams lost her serve twice to 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone before prevailing 6-4, 7-5 in the second round. Djokovics run of 100 weeks at the top of the ATP rankings is in danger this week from Rafael Nadal, who defeated Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-2, 6-4. Nadal will retake No. 1 if he reaches the final. Williams found herself having to grind against Schiavone in their second set, losing her serve twice and having to break back each time. Schiavone had three set points at 5-3 but Williams won 15 of the last 17 points to survive. Still, Schiavone, who won only one game off Williams at the U.S. Open, won her most against Williams in eight years. "It didnt surprise me," Williams said. "I was definitely more surprised that I played so well in the open, but it was a different circumstance — even though the scoreline looked much easier at the open, it wasnt an easy match. MATCHUPS: Its really fun to watch both head coaches move around the chess pieces and create situations where they get their better players in scenarios where they have the supposed upper hand. Its fascinating stuff to key in on and its the essence of NBA hoops. Been impressed with both coaching staffs preparation and attention to detail. Plays out of timeouts from both sides have been well scripted and the amount of details flying around in both huddles is evident. As a former coach, I really enjoy and respect this aspect of these games. 2. LANDRY FIELDS: Totally agree with this move and I said it the other day. Hes the most capable defender that they have in the Joe Johnson matchup due to his size, strength, athleticism, smarts and overall range. Hes a guy you can play for a possession or two at the four-spot as well to match Paul Pierce. He made a big impact on Tuesday night in spite of not scoring. Ive said it many times before - yes, he has limitations but hes a winning player that does the little things that teams must have to get over the hump. A true pro just like so many of the guys on both of these teams. 3. TURNOVERS: Toronto has 40 in just two games - at home! To be tied 1-1 in the series after that youve got to feel really fortunate. You do that on the road and this series will be over quick. Nets defence in the half court has been sensational. Multiple help and amazing communication and coverages. Raptors must realize that the Nets are incredibly help-conscious and play on that and look to create their help and then get rid of the balll quick to the next guy and keep them on the run and prevent them loading up on the guy with the ball.dddddddddddd Must be a whole lot tougher with the ball and play through contact. Not going to get the whistle-deal with it and be that much better. It can be done. Move the ball side-top-side and make the defence cover. Better spacing, screening, ball and player movement and inside-out play are imperative. 4. BENCH USAGE: Jason Kidd goes with 11 guys and Dwane Casey with eight. Different styles. Considering that both teams didnt play from Saturday afternoon until Tuesday night and you would think you would load up your starters minutes, yet Jason Kidd wants his team all in on every possession defensively so no plays off. No right or wrong answer here, just interesting to watch the points of emphasis on both sides play out. 5. CROWDS (both inside and outside ACC): Wow! My goodness, I have goose bumps just typing this. Im so proud of the fans and feel so happy for them that theyre getting to experience this. Blown away by the enthusiasm and atmosphere. Toronto is making a major statement that its a major league hoops town and that this country is embracing this sport more and more each day. The singing of the Canadian national anthem by the fans is awesome - it chokes me up. Been working as a Raptors broadcaster for the past 16 years and have seen all of the good and all of the not-so-good. Your loyalty to the Raptors and the growth of the sport are truly appreciated. Im so fortunate to be a part of it. This has been remarkable to watch develop over the years. Enjoy - you deserve it. ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Kerry, First off, I love the Q&As that you do (even though I often wasnt your biggest fan when I was watching games growing up... just kidding... kind of). In the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning game Saturday night, I saw the official, referee Gord Dwyer, help Steven Stamkos to the bench after his skate blade broke. I have never seen this before in the NHL. Shortly after, Alex Killorn, the player who came on for Stamkos, scored the game-tying goal. I can understand picking up a loose stick on the ice, but helping a player to the bench during play seems unfair and I have never seen another official do that. Is this commonplace and I just dont see it more often, or was an unfair advantage given to Stamkos and the Lightning in this situation? Best, Brock R.Cedar Falls, Iowa --- Hi Kerry,I am sure you have had numerous emails about this incident but go on and choose mine for the column and show the worldwide profile NHL l now enjoys, even in Ireland. I was watching the Penguins and Lightning game Saturday and was more than perplexed by an incident that occured late in the third period. The incident resulted in a goal for the Lightning as a result of referee, Gord Dwyer, helping Steven Stamkos off the ice when he had an issue with his skate. Indeed one could argue Stamkos interfered, albeit minimally, with Paul Martin as he left the ice. My understanding was either Stamkos could make his own way off the ice, be assisted by line mates or failing that the referee would blow the play dead as he would for an injury and the resulting faceoff would take place outside the Pittsburgh defensive zone? What is your view on this? Darragh McMahon, Ireland. --- Kerry, Im sure you got more than one email on this, but its a bizarre play. How is the ref allowed to help a player (Stamkos) off the ice instead of blowing the play dead, and have that player bump into a player (Paul Martin) on the opposing team who is in the middle of the play? People want to say the NHL doesnt give stars preferential treatment, but all you have to do is play that clip. Thanks for reading and keep up the great column. Nick --- Hi Kerry What is your opinion on an official pushing Stamkos over to the bench after one of his skates broke? Thanks for your input. John Dickie --- The other night Im watching Penguins/Lightning and Stamkos loses his skate blade and the referee gives him a push halfway across the ice...what do you think about this and do you think its okay? Thanks, Dylan Rogers --- Dear Fans (With special welcome to Darragh McMahon all the way from Ireland): This certainly is an unusual situation (check out the viz) and magnified by the fact that Tyler Johnson (Steven Stamkos replacement) set up the Lightning power play goal scored by Alex Killorn which tied the game with 3:10 remaining in regulation. Gord Dwyer is a good and conscientious Referee. Gord is also a really good person. The Refs human instinct here was to assist a player that was placed in harms way once he witnessed Steven Stamkos slip, slide and stumble toward a potential groin injury (or worse) some 100 feet from his bench. This wasnt Star treatment that was being extended by Dwyer, but legitimate concern for a players well-being. The courtesy of providing two strides and a shove by the Ref was creative and would have been done for all the right reasons. With hindsight being 20-20 the end result supports the claim by some that, "No good deed goes unpunished!" You must first understand that theres no official policy on assisting a player that has sustained an injury or broken a skate and is attempting to make his way to the bench under his own power while handing a player that has lost his stick is a definite no-no. A policy might be instituted as a result of this intervention by Referee Dwyer but that remains to be seen. I will tell you that I have instinctively helped more than one injured player to his bench as play continued and even one with a broken skate that had no adverse effect. I know that many other Officials have done the same with regard to injured players. We not only want to ensure the player gets medical attention quickly but also to keep the play moving for game flow. Rule 8 advises us that play can be stopped immediately when a serious injury has been sustained; otherwise the Referee must wait for a change in puck possession unless his team is in a scoring position. While this was not an injury situation in the moment, Referee Dwyer might have decided to be proactive to prevent an injury from occurring. How can we fault him if that were the case? Had Steven Stamkos laid on the ice play could have been stopped or once the puck cleared the Pens zone an offside might result in a whistle with Stamkos still down. The Pens dumped the puck all the way down into the Lightning corner at the moment Steven Stamkos broke his skate blade. With the dump time and space was created for Stamkos to attempt his slide to the bench and for the Referee to allow his instincts to take over and assist. It certainly would have seemed innocent enough at the time for any Ref. Rule 63 (delay of game) states that play shall not be stopped nor the game delayed by reasons of adjustments to clothing, equipment, skates or sticks. This typically applies to situations when play has already been halted to avoid delays but the broad wording might also stretch to when play is actually in progress. At some point, common sense would take over and play would be stopped if a player could not make his way to the bench. Due to the ultimate scoring of the goal it is easy to suggest that an unfair advantage was offered by the Referee to the Tampa Bay Lightning. I believe that in this situation the Referee acted creatively and instinctively to assist a player that was in a difficult position without disrupting the flow of play. Unless Stephen Walkom issues a firm "hands off" policy to the Officials in situations such as this (hindsight aside), what Referee Gord Dwyer did speaks to the humanness of the Referees and Linesmen that place the well being of players first. cheap nfl jerseys . Once again Jordan Cieciwa (@FitCityJordan) and I (@LynchOnSports) go head to head in our picks for this weekends event in Las Vegas. Let us know which side youre on! Either #TeamLynch or #TeamJC, tweet us on Twitter. Also feel free to leave your opinions in the comment section below. Chris Weidman (c) vs. Anderson Silva (UFC Middleweight Championship) James Lynch TSN.ca (@LynchOnSports) Current middleweight champion Weidman looks to prove that lightning can strike twice as he battles former champ Silva in one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history. Their first encounter at UFC 162 back in July was not your average championship match. The 38-year old Brazilian title holder was taunting the American up and comer by leaving his hands down and demanding the challenger engage with him in a slugfest. This over confident tactic would prove to be Silvas downfall as the 29-year old Long Island, New York native would catch the Brazilian and knock him out in the second round. For Silva, it was the first knockout loss in his 38-fight career. Two big questions surround this rematch: The first being was Silva his own Achilles heel with cockiness? Or is the undefeated American truly that talented in defeating a seemingly unbeatable middleweight kingpin? If you watch the fight closely, it appears Silva was winning the majority of the fight and by the second round, Weidman was slowing down quite a bit. Im of the belief Silva lost the fight for himself and while no doubt Weidman is talented, I dont believe the Blackhouse product will make the same mistake twice. One guarantee I can make is this fight will not go the distance, but expect the former champion to emerge victorious. Silva via third-round knockout. Jordan Cieciwa TSN Radio 1290 (@FitCityJordan) Not sure if you tuned into last weekends TSN 1290 " The Weigh-In", but Im excited to write down what I perceived to be the best quote on the Weidman vs. Silva situation. Chris Weidman beat Anderson Silvas ego, he still hasnt beat the legend. The first time they met Weidman won the fight with striking, if he thinks he has a chance at winning that way again, this fight will be done in the first three minutes of the first round. Anderson Silva got to the top of the pile with precision striking. The only chance Weidman has is the same shot every other guy in the division seems to have. Out wrestle Silva, control him, frustrate him, and avoid his miracle punches or last second submissions. I still dont think Weidman is good enough to control the entire fight. His first mistake will be the win for Silva. Silva via fourth round submission Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Miesha Tate (UFC Womens Bantamweight Championship) Lynch The two coaches for Season 18 of the Ultimate Fighter finally clash to close out the year, as the face of Womens MMA Rousey, battles 27-year old challenger Tate. These two women first met back in March of 2012 in Strikeforce, when then 135lb champion Tate was making the first defence of her title. Rousey, who was 4-0 at the time, engaged in verbal warfare leading up to the fight. The then 25-year old would backup all that talk with a first round submission of Tate to take home the title. Since then Rousey has remained undefeated, going a perfect 7-0 with wins over Canadian Sarah Kaufman and Liz Carmouche. No doubt her Olympic Judo pedigree and high level jiu-jitsu have served her well in taking the top spot in the bantamweight division. Since the loss, Tate has had a very lackluster showing in her last two fights. She had a very uninspiring win over newly retired fighter Julie Kenzie and was defeated by Cat Zingano in her UFC debut, losing by TKO at the TUF 17 finale. In fact if it werent for Zingano suffering an injury prior to the filming of The Ultimate Fighter Season 18, Tate wouldnt have received this title shot. Expect Rousey to emulate a similar game plan as their first fight, by getting this contest to the ground and going in for the submission. Rousey via second round submission. JC Well here we go, a rematch that I really want to see. Rousey did no favours for herself on "The Ultimate Fighter" from a PR stand point, but she did a great job of making this a fight I want to see. Tate is in this fight somewhat by accident. Her loss to Cat Zingano saw her controlling the first two rounds, and then the tides turned fast for a TKO and the lost opportunity to coach and have a rematch Rousey. Zingano eventually had to bow out of TUF 18 after an injury. This leaves Tate with something to prove and an evolving skill set to hopefully avoid the one-sided attack of Rousey. Unfortunately, Rousey is really good at MMA, her striking has never looked sharp, but she has also never had to put it into action. Tate is going to have to stay away from Rousey and hope that she has enough power in her punches to KO the champ. I dont think that will happen, instead this will be another typical outing for Rousey. Stalk, over power, submit from a clinch takedown. Rousey via first round arm bar. Josh Barnett vs. Travis Browne Lynch In a matchup that could easily produce the next challenger to the heavyweight title, former UFC heavyweight champion Barnett looks for his third-straight win, when he takes on the very durable Browne. The 36-year old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had an impressive UFC return in his last fight, defeating Frank Mir in the first round back at UFC 164. The win over Mir was Barnetts tenth in his last 11-fights, with his only blemish being a unanimous decision loss to former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier in 2012. For years Barnett was considered one of the best heavyweight fighters outside the UFC and was never offered a contract because of his steroid use back in 2002 during his first UFC stint. Now back with the promotion, a win over Browne could propel Barnett to a title shot once again.dddddddddddd Meanwhile in his last contest, the Jackson/Winklejohn product Browne had a comeback of the year performance in his win over Alistair Overeem at UFC Fight Night 26. After suffering a number of devastating blows to the head courtesy of the former K1 champion, the 31-year old would bounce back and head-kick knockout Overeem to win the fight and improve to 6-1-1 in the UFC. While Browne has a significant height advantage and a two-inch reach, Barnett has the experience edge over the Hawaiian, who has just 17-fights under his belt. Both fighters have knockout power, with the slight edge going to Browne, but Barnett is the better wrestling and possesses a better ground game. Like with many fights, experience usually triumphs youth and I think well see that in this fight. Expect Barnett to neutralize Brownes standup arsenal on route to a unanimous decision victory. Barnett via unanimous decision JC This will be the Fight of the Night. Josh Barnett will mix it up with anyone; he is an angry and aggressive man. He also has the skills to back it all up. Travis Browne is putting together an impressive career, and a legitimate reason to be called a title contender. Browne had a lot of difficulty early on in his match-up with Alistair Overeem, at the start of the year. Its got the hype of being the best comeback of the year. Fighting a MMA Superstar and person with the talent of Overeem has set Browne up to be ready for the strength, and skill of Josh Barnett. That being said, Josh Barnett is probably one of the most underrated threats for the UFC heavyweight title. He spent most of his career out of the UFC spotlight, to the average fan, that means hes not "good". The truth is, Barnetts style is unique, and his aggressive attack takes most guys by surprise. This will be a battle, but cage control and aggression will be Barnetts. Barnett via unanimous decision Fabricio Camones vs. Jim Miller Lynch Looking to propel himself back into title contention, the always durable Miller looks to make a statement Saturday night when he faces off with 33-year old Team Nogueira product Camones. While it may say Miller is coming off a "No Contest" to Pat Healy in his last bout, it really was a loss as he was dominated for three rounds by the 30-year old Healy and eventually submitted in the third round. Because the Athletic Commission believes Marijuana is a performance enhancing drug, Healy was suspended and the bout was turned into a "No Contest". Throughout his MMA career, Miller has always been known as that fighter who cant seem to get over the hump. While he does have impressive wins over Joe Lauzon, Melvin Guillard and Gleason Tibau, he has lost to Benson Henderson, Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard. Camones meanwhile has had a number of injuries and actually hasnt competed inside the octagon since July of 2012 where he lost a unanimous decision to Melvin Guillard at UFC 148. Both fighters are well versed on the mat, but its Miller who has the edge in his wrestling and striking. In addition, the fighter with the longer layoff generally loses to the fresher fighter. Expect Miller to get back in the win column by grinding out a unanimous decision victory. Miller via unanimous decision. JC Im a huge fan of Pat Healy, which is why in my eyes he won the Miller fight, and the THC they found in his system had no bearing on that fight. That was a three round clinic put on by Healy. I dont think Fabricio Camones has the ability to do that to Jim Miller. Miller has the unique ability of being extremely durable, he can take a beating and still wind up imposing his will on his opponent. This fight should never see Miller needing to prove he is tough, his danger will be in being submitted. I cant see Camones winning this in a decision. Miller has never been KOd, but Nate Diaz did catch him with a submission. Thats Camones chance, use that Team Nogueira background and slip in a submission. Problem is that I dont see that happening. Miller via nanimous decision Diego Brandao vs. Dustin Poirier Lynch Ultimate Fighter Season 14 winner Brandao battles American Top Team product Poirier in a featherweight affair. Brandao is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Pineda back in August at UFC Fight Night 26 where he improved his UFC record to 4-1. Poirier meanwhile is coming off a dominating performance over Erik Koch at UFC 164 where he dropped the 25-year old twice on route to a unanimous decision victory. For the 26-year old Brazilian, Poirier provides a big step up in competition and will no doubt look to keep this fight standing in hopes of catching the durable 24-year old. Thats easier said than done though as "The Diamond" has never been knocked out through his 17-fight career. In addition, the 2012 Fight of the Year winner has both the height and reach advantage going into this fight. No doubt this will be a competitive matchup, but Poirier should have more tools in his arsenal to edge out a close decision victory. Poirier via unanimous decision. JC If you have been watching Poiriers career, youll know that the kid is talented. He has headlined a UFC event, and contended with the best in his division. He looked fantastic in his last showing against Erik Koch. On the other side of the octagon is Diego Brandao, who set up a slick submission against Pablo Garza for a win. That victory doesnt compare with being in a fight with Cub Swanson, Chang Sung Jung, or Erik Koch. Poirier has been getting better and better over the past two years. I think he is a step ahead of Brandao and hell prove it in this fight with a knockout win. Poirier via 3rd round knockout Undercard Picks: Lynch: Hall, Tibau, Siver, Howard, Voelker, Peralta JC: Hall, Tibau, Siver, Bahadurzada, Voelker, Payan Agree or Disagree?
