ST. Willis McGahee Miami Jersey . LOUIS -- The New Orleans Saints looked like a team playing out the string. And, although the St. Louis Rams are out of contention yet again, theyre not going quietly. Drew Brees threw interceptions that led to touchdowns on the Saints first two possessions and the Rams got big days from Zac Stacy, Robert Quinn and on special teams in a 27-16 victory Sunday. Quinn had two sacks, giving him an NFC-leading 15, for a pass rush that took the heat off a young secondary. His quarterback hit on the Saints first snap of the game altered the flight of the ball on T.J. McDonalds interception. The Saints (10-4) missed their first chance to clinch a playoff berth, trailing 24-3 at the half, but made it look respectable with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Theyre unbeaten at home, but just 3-4 on the road and play at Carolina with the NFC South lead on the line next week. Kellen Clemens threw for two TDs in the first quarter, matching his best performance in seven games as the fill-in starter for Sam Bradford. The Rams (6-
recovered an onside kick to set up a field goal in the first quarter, and Michael Brockers blocked a field-goal attempt at the end of the half. Brees was 39 for 56 for 393 yards, but with just one touchdown. The Rams played one of their strongest games of the year a week after getting eliminated, and the franchise is assured of a 10th consecutive season without a winning record. St. Louis offence had a nice day against Saints defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryan, who had an extended interview with the Rams in January before joining New Orleans. The Rams have upset the Saints in the last two meetings in St. Louis. They were 2-14 in 2011, but one of the victories came against New Orleans, which totalled 13 wins that year. Stacy shook off an early injury scare and set a franchise rookie record with 106 yards by halftime, bettering the likes of Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, Steven Jackson and Jerome Bettis. Stacy finished with 132 yards on 27 carries. Brees scored on a 1-yard sneak early in the fourth quarter and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marques Colston with 3:07 to go. The Saints recovered an onside kick, but their comeback ended when Garrett Hartley was wide left on a 26-yard field-goal attempt. Last week, Brees became the fastest in NFL history to 50,000 yards passing while throwing for four TDs in a 31-13 victory over Carolina at home. Brees was intercepted twice in the first quarter for the first time in a decade, putting the Rams in prime scoring position on the first and killing a drive on the second. The Saints trailed 17-0 early in the second quarter, unable to overcome Brees misfires. Quinn had perhaps his best game of the year. On his second sack, he stripped Brees and then recovered the fumble in the third quarter to help keep the Saints down. Cory Harkey broke three tackles on a 31-yard touchdown catch the first play -- just his seventh reception of the year after Brees first interception. Brees floated a rollout aimed at Jimmy Graham, who was in triple-coverage, and Trumaine Johnson snared another underthrown pass at the goal line. The Rams drove 93 yards, helped by a pair of personal penalties, and made it 14-0 on Clemens 4-yard pass to a wide-open Lance Kendricks. The Rams followed up with perfect execution on an onside kick by kicker Greg Zuerlein recovered in the air by a leaping Stedman Bailey, setting up a field goal for a 17-0 cushion early in the second quarter. Roy Halladay and his former Philadelphia Phillies teammate Cole Hamels were both in the news this week; Halladay for signing a one-day contract with the Blue Jays, so he could officially retire where it all began for him and Hamels, along with fellow Phillies southpaw Cliff Lee, were both mentioned in possible trade talks, which were later refuted by the Phillies special advisor Pat Gillick on TSN Drive with Dave Naylor. After selecting the quarterback in the first round last year, the next step is adding talent to give Manuel the opportunity to progress after an inconsistent and injury-shortened rookie season. "Its a quarterback-driven league, so were going to give every avenue and every piece of the puzzle to surround EJ and make him as successful as possible," general manager Doug Whaley said. "What we did this off-season affords us the opportunity to go any way and every way in the draft. But our main focus is making sure EJ progresses." Manuels progression is a point of emphasis for a team that hasnt had stability at quarterback since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly retired following the 1996 season. And questions remain whether Manuel is capable of providing that stability. He went 4-6 and oversaw a sputtering offence that contributed to Buffalo (6-10) extending the NFLs longest active playoff drought to 14 seasons. The Bills can do little but cross their fingers in hoping Manuel can stay healthy after being sidelined by knee injuries on three separate occasions. What they can control is adding pieces to the offence. Buffalo began by creating two new offensive positions on coach Doug Marrones staff, including quarterbacks coach Todd Downing. Looking overmatched and overwhelmed while falling behind 3-1 to the Penguins four games into the Eastern Conference semifinals, its the Rangers who head to Game 7 on Tuesday night looking like the team ready to move on. Martin St. Louis, just days removed from the death of his mother, scored the first of New Yorks three goals in Game 6 to provide the jolt that carried the Rangers all the way back from the brink. Dominant and disruptive to start the series, the Penguins have spent the last six periods giving New York every reason to believe it can rally from a 3-1 deficit for the first time in franchise history. Centre Sidney Crosby has just one goal in 12 games. The power play — which tied with Washington for the leagues best in the regular season — has converted just one of its past 19 chances. And now coach Dan Bylsma finds himself 60 minutes away from either taking the Penguins back to the conference finals for the third time in six years or possibly looking for work. Not that Bylsma is ready to talk about the big picture yet. The task at hand is worrisome enough. "These are the ones you dream about playing," Bylsma said. "This is one were going to remember." The memories havent been kind to the Penguins in deciding games on home ice. Pittsburgh is just 2-6 at home in Game 7s in franchise history, including losses to Montreal in 2010 and Tampa Bay three years ago. LOS ANGELES -- With the potentially record-breaking $2 billion sale of the Los Angeles Clippers hanging in the balance, a trial beginning Monday will focus on whether Donald Sterlings estranged wife had the authority under terms of a family trust to unilaterally negotiate the deal. Shelly Sterling struck a deal to sell the Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer after Donald Sterlings racist remarks to a girlfriend were publicized and the NBA moved to oust him as team owner. The terms of the trust say incapacitation can be determined by two licensed doctors without ties to the family who are specialists in their field. A trustee must co-operate with such exams. The judge must find that Shelly Sterling acted in accordance with the trust and that the deal still applies -- even though the trust has since been revoked by Donald Sterling -- for the sale to proceed. Donald Sterlings attorneys say that his wife "blindsided" him and he submitted to examinations under false pretenses. They allege there was undue influence in the doctors findings, and that the exams and letters regarding his mental capacity were defective and incomplete. They say that if he had been properly informed, he would have participated at a more convenient time instead of being pulled out of legal meetings. "He would have also eaten properly and have been well rested for the examinations and focused on taking the exam with the full and complete understanding what it was for and the serious nature of the exam," they wrote in filings. But Shelly Sterlings attorney, Pierce ODonnell, said that Donald Sterling voluntarily went to take scans of his brain and there was no requirement to remind Donald Sterling, who is an attorney, or his legal team of the trusts conditions. Kevin Love Will Fail To Meet The Challenge Of The Moment. Watson: Love already has made comments about getting touches on the perimeter instead of getting them on the wing, and his comfort with starting the game from the outside in. His adjustment will be greater than Irvings but 75 per cent of Kevin Love is more than enough to make the Cavs a competitive team in this league. Strickland: Is he really a Top 10 player in the NBA or is he just a very good complimentary piece to the Cleveland Cavaliers new Big Three who put up huge numbers on a horrid team for years in Minnesota? Jason Kidds Head Coaching Job Will Be In Jeopardy Again For A Second Consecutive Year. Watson: At 15-67, the Bucks were the worst team in the league. They are young, raw and inexperienced, much like their second year coach. Under Kidd, the Brooklyn Nets were 10-21 for 2013, managed to turn it around in the latter part of the season, but Kidd had former All-Stars on his roster to right the ship. He doesnt have that luxury, and wont be able to keep running isolation plays. If he didnt sign such a good contract, he would be on the outs early. Strickland: Would love to say thats hard to imagine with a young team that needs guidance and then we look at their bench boss and the plausibility of Milwaukee scouting for a new coach doesnt seem so far-fetched. That said, however, Kidd will get at least three years to turn Jabari Parker, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brandon Knight and Larry Sanders into a competitive unit before hes sent to spill Diet Coke on someone elses sideline. The New York Knicks Will Master The Triangle. Watson: If the Knicks figure it out often enough, they will be a problem. There will have to be buy-in from all of their players but learning the triangle and adjusting to a new coach in an environment of me-first players is going to be a challenge. But if anyone can do it, it will be Phil Jackson. Strickland: You mean the Knicks of the I dont think I can win the scoring title in The Triangle superstar Carmelo Anthony? Strickland: Who? No Bueno. With the Bulls high on the upside of McBuckets Doug McDermott, Mirotic could end up being a better, more versatile player than McDermott. That said, Mirotic wont get the recognition as rookie of the year in a class that features Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker, who will get the shots and minutes to amass numbers on very bad teams. The 76ers Will Be Worse Than They Were Last Year. Watson: Philadelphia lost 63 games last year, including 26 in a row, and thats a tough number to beat, particularly with last years lottery pick Nerlens Noel, suiting up after sitting out his rookie season due to injury. But both of their lottery picks from the 2014 Draft wont be suiting up for them this season - Joel Embiid (#3) and Dario Saric (#12) - while their top player and NBAs reigning Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams is recovering from shoulder surgery. Philly is bound for the lottery again and not by accident. Strickland: Rhetorical. Sixers GM Sam Hinkies asset management plan of collecting high draft picks, whittling contracts, jettisoning players to free up as much cap room as possible to attract high-end free agents while the Philly faithful fan base suffers through yet another season in the basement doesnt sound like much of a plan for a place not really considered a destination city despite the franchises rich history. More will be expected of Dwyane Wade and Bosh will not benefit from sagging defences waiting to help LeBron and from there, the talent gets decidedly thinner. While good, Luol Deng is aging and with Wades health a perennial concern, expect him to miss games and the Heat to miss the playoffs. Boston Bruins trade Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks for Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau & Brad Stuart (2005)In a bit revisionist history, imagine where the Bruins would be if they had never dealt Jumbo Joe. Would they have won the Cup? More than one? Despite failing to get anything resembling a top six player in return for a Hart Trophy winner, the Bruins saved themselves the money that Joe was asking for, and put together one of the model franchises of the league. Depth is often overlooked, as the players stuffing the box scores receive the credit while the sandpaper playing a dozen minutes a night is considered interchangeable and insignificant. The three players that the Bruins got back in this deal were these type of players, who while valuable were often forgotten. However, Joe scored seventy plus points in in seven straight seasons for the Sharks, so no amount of depth can make up for the impact that he has had in San Jose. 7. New York Islanders trade Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen to the Florida Panthers for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha (2000)Mike Milbury strikes again. After taking Luongo 4th overall in 97, he decided to take Rick DiPietro 1st overall in 2000. So obviously he decided to ship Bobby Loo to the Sunshine State. Ironically Jokinen was taken one pick before Luongo in 97, and ended up playing for three different teams in his first three full seasons in the league. This quote from the 2000 draft will go down as one of the more misguided statements in recent history. "Were rolling the dice here a little bit," Milbury said, grinning as if to acknowledge his understatement. "Luongo is going to be an excellent goaltender in this league for a lot of years. But in our minds, we feel DiPietro possesses an element Roberto didnt have." You certainly cant knock Milbury for trying to be bold, and there was no way of knowing that DiPietro would suffer so many injuries that would derail his career, but this move will go down as the feather in Milburys cap. 6. Toronto Maple Leafs trade Tuukka Rask to the Boston Bruins for Andrew Raycroft (2006)The reign of John Ferguson Jr. at the helm of the Leafs was far from glorious, and his decision to trade Rask was especially ugly. The Leafs had both Justin Pogge and Rask coming up in the ranks, and an aging Eddie Belfour on the roster who was in need of some insulation. The decision to ship Rask out instead of Pogge is one that forever marred JFJs track record. Raycroft won the Calder with the Bruins in 03-04, and after playing in the Swedish Elite League during the lockout, made his way to Toronto where expectations were high for the Belleville, Ontario native. There was dreams of Raycroft and Pogge teaming up to form a formidable goaltending tandem for the Leafs, but neither player was able to find their way in the league. Raycroft had one solid season for the blue and white, but failed to find any consistency throughout his career. Rask was just a pup when he was dealt to the Bs, but after developing in Providence for a couple of seasons, the Fin has established himself as one of the best goalies in the game. One can only imagine where the Leafs would be if this deal had never materiialized 5. Asics Gel Saga Kill Bill. Montreal Canadiens trade Patrick Roy and Mike Keane to the Colorado Avalanche for Andrei Kovalenko, Martin Rucinsky and Jocelyn Thibault (1995)We all remember the scene of Roy storming off the ice and whispering into Habs president Ronald Coreys ear. Several days later, he was dealt to the Avs in a move that Canadiens fans still shake their head at. Was it a panic move by the Habs? It sure looks like it in retrospect. The Canadiens thought that they were getting a goalie that would be able to develop into a capable replacement in Thibault, but he was never able a consistent game. All the while Roy won another two Cups in Colorado, and will go down as one of the best goalies of all time. Kovalenko and Rucinsky were capable players, but were never able to find enough success with the Habs to come close to justifying the deal. 4. Edmonton Oilers trade Mark Messier and Jeff Beukeboom to New York Rangers for Bernie Nicholls, David Shaw, Steven Rice and Louie DeBrusk (1991)While many point to that fateful day in 88 as the one that defined The Boys on the Bus, it can be said that dealing the Moose was the one that officially ended the dynasty of the copper and blue. However, many forget that the circumstance surrounding the departure of Gretzky and Messier from Edmonton differ greatly. While The Great One was sold by owner Peter Pocklington, Messier and his agent (his father Doug) demanded a trade when contract demands werent met. It is often difficult to leverage adequate value when a player publicly demands a trade, but Oilers GM Glen Sather fell short of even getting players that could stay on the ice for the Oilers. Messier of course went on to lift Lord Stanley for the Rangers, while the Oilers havent won a ring since he left. 3. Florida Panthers trade Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a sixth-round pick (Sergei Shirokov) to the Vancouver Canucks for Alex Auld, Bryan Allen and Todd Bertuzzi (2006)One player appearing on the same list twice? And by the time the week is done he could make it a trifecta. Apparently GMs around the league are eager to try to formulate deals to ship Luongo around the league, but he who deals him continues to get hosed on the return. Bertuzzi certainly had his time as a high-end player for Vancouver skating alongside Marcus Naslund, but getting a franchise goalie for the better part of a decade was worth more than him and some spare parts. 2. Philadelphia Flyers trade Peter Forsberg, Steve Duchesne, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, two first-round selections (Jocelyn Thibault and Nolan Baumgartner) and cash ($15 million) to Quebec for Eric Lindros (1992) Lindros was a man among boys coming out of junior, but he came along with some heavy baggage. He made it known that he didnt want to play for the Nords, and ended up sitting out his rookie season waiting for a deal. A year later the Nords shipped him to Philly and in return got a bounty that armchair GMs would have a tough time wrapping their heads around. While Lindros burst onto the scene and established himself as one of the best players in the game, the price that was paid for the man-child is still hard to justify. Forsberg established himself as one of the leagues most dynamic forwards, Hextall eventually found his way back to Philly - but he was an established tender that played another seven seasons after the deal. Add in a half dozen role players plus a cool $15 million, and it is hard to justify this deal despite the level of dominance that Lindros displayed during his time in the league. 1. Edmonton Oilers trade Wayne Gretzky, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushenlnyski to the Los Angeles Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three 1st round picks and $15 million (198 On so many levels, incomprehensible. Not only because of his status as the greatest player of all time, and not only because it was the end of one of the greatest dynasties the game had ever seen. Deals like this are quite simply not possible in todays league and therefore that much more difficult to wrap your head around. The economic condition that the league is flush with now makes it easy to forget the days when southern expansion was fresh and you could quite simply cut checks for players akin to European footy. It doesnt even matter that the Oilers could have ended up in decent shape had Jimmy Carson kept up his torrid scoring pace or that Glen Sather had next to no part in the negotiations of the best player of all time. The trade was hardly that, but more of a transfer of assets. It shocked the sporting world in a way that cannot be replicated.
