(Sports Network) - The Stanley Cup Final will finally get underway this evening in Vancouver, as the Canucks host the Boston Bruins in Game 1 at Rogers Arena. Both clubs have had plenty of time to rest for this best-of-seven series since winning conference titles. The Western Conference champion Canucks have been off since ousting San Jose from the postseason on May 24. Boston has been out of action since beating Tampa Bay in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals on Friday. The Canucks, who have never won a title, were last in the Cup Finals in 1994 when they were bested in seven games during a classic series with the New York Rangers. The road back to the Stanley Cup Finals has been a long and tough one for the Vancouver franchise, as the club never made it past the second round between 94 and this spring. But the path the Canucks have taken in this years postseason has gotten progressively easier. Alain Vigneaults club blew a 3-0 lead to Chicago in the opening round before winning the series in Game 7. The Canucks then ousted Nashville in six games in Round 2 before beating San Jose in five tests to earn the franchises third conference title. The Canucks used an excellent series from the Sedin twins and goaltender Roberto Luongo to make quick work of the Sharks. Vancouver captain Henrik Sedin compiled an amazing 12 points in the conference finals, notching one goal and 11 assists over the five games. Thanks in large part to that monster series, last years Hart Trophy winner is leading all NHLers with 21 points (2 goals, 19 assists) in 18 games this postseason Identical twin Daniel, meanwhile, notched two goals and four assists against the Sharks and has eight goals and eight helpers in the postseason. Between the pipes, Luongo has gone a long way this spring towards dispelling the notion that he doesnt have what it takes to win big games. The 32-year- old netminder had a rough series in the opening round against Chicago, but it has been pretty much smooth sailing since. The Montreal native and 2011 Vezina Trophy finalist is 12-6 with a 2.29 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in 18 playoff games this year. Vancouvers Manny Malhotra has been out since March 16 with an eye injury and it appears the veteran centerman will not be ready to return for Game 1. Malhotra was hit in the left eye with a puck and although the injury was originally expected to keep him out for the remainder of the year, it is now believed he could return at some point in the Finals. On defense, Christian Ehrhoff (shoulder) and Aaron Rome (head) missed the last two games of the San Jose series, but both players are expected to skate for the Canucks this evening. While the Canucks last played for a title 17 years ago, its been an even longer road back to the Cup Finals for Boston, which made its last appearance in the NHLs championship round in 1990. The Bruins ousted Tampa Bay for this years Eastern Conference title by beating the Lightning, 1-0, in a decisive Game 7 in Boston. It was the second Game 7 victory of this postseason for Boston, which went seven games against Montreal in Round 1 before sweeping Philadelphia in the conference semifinals. Boston, which was ousted in five games by Mark Messier and the Edmonton Oilers in the 1990 Stanley Cup Finals, hasnt won a title since Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito led the franchise to the 1972 crown. All told, the Bs have claimed five Stanley Cup titles in their storied history. Boston is a team built on strong defense and solid goaltending, but the Bs showed some offensive punch in eliminating the high-powered Lightning in the conference finals, scoring 21 times over the seven games. The Bruins are averaging 3.22 goals per game for the entire playoffs and have yielded just 2.50 scores per contest. David Krejci and Nathan Horton have been Bostons best forwards in this postseason. The former is leading the playoffs with 10 goals and has also added seven assists, while Horton has also notched 17 points (8g, 9a) and scored the only goal in Bostons Game 7 victory over the Lightning. Bostons defense and goaltending usually makes scoring against the club a difficult task, but the Lightning gave the Bruins more than they could handle at times in the conference finals. Even with two shutouts by Boston goaltender Tim Thomas, Tampa still managed 21 goals over the seven-game series. Thomas won the Vezina Trophy as the leagues top goaltender in 2009 and is considered to be the favorite for the award this year. The 37-year-old is 12-6 this postseason with a 2.29 GAA and .929 save percentage. Thomas set an NHL record with a .938 save percentage over 57 games during the regular season. The Canucks won the Presidents Trophy as the club with the best record in the regular season. Presidents Trophy winners have gone on to win the Stanley Cup seven times since the award was introduced in the mid-1980s, but the last time was in 2008 when Detroit won it all. Vancouver also has a bit of interesting history going in its favor in this series and it has to do with the city hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. The only other two Canadian cities to host Olympics -- Montreal and Calgary -- went on to win Stanley Cup titles the following year. The Canadiens hosted the Summer Games in 1976 and won the second of four straight Cups in 1977, while Calgary claimed its only championship in 1989, a year after hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics. Of course, the Canucks are not only carrying the hopes of a city, but also a nation considering a Canadian team hasnt lifted the Cup since Montreal defeated Wayne Gretzkys Los Angeles Kings in 1993. Boston, meanwhile, has lost its last five trips to the Finals since defeating the Rangers for the Cup in 1972. The Bruins have a 5-20 record in the championship round since their last title. The Canucks and Bruins have never faced each other in the playoffs and the clubs only met once this season with Boston notching a 3-1 decision at Rogers Arena on Feb. 26. The Bs have taken three of four and four of the last six games these clubs have played against each other. Neither clubs goaltender has Stanley Cup Finals experience, but Luongo and Thomas have 52 and 36 games, respectively, of playoff action under their belts. The Canucks, who will also host Game 2 on Saturday, have home-ice advantage to start this series as a result of their superior regular season record and Vancouver boasts a solid 7-3 record at Rogers Arena this spring. Boston has a 5-3 record as the visiting team in the postseason. Wholesale NFL Jerseys . Brandon Pirri added a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks, who have won four of five. VAL DISERE, France -- On a day dominated by veterans, 34-year-old Mario Matt won his 14th World Cup slalom race to equal his Austrian countryman Benjamin Raichs mark while 35-year-old Patrick Thaler of Italy got on the podium for first time in nearly five years. Matt, a two-time former slalom world champion, safely protected his first-run lead while other contenders struggled on the notoriously tough Stade Olympique de Bellevarde course. "The last two years I was a few times on the podium, but always had some small mistakes on the runs and didnt win," Matt said. "I dont have the feeling Im old. Sometimes I have the problems with the back but I already had this eight years ago, and when I dont have the problems I feel fine." He beat Swedens Mattias Hargin by 0.53 seconds and Thaler -- second after the first run -- by 0.78 for his 15th overall World Cup win, with the other coming in supercombined. "You have to push your limits in order to win but I was still surprised how fast I was in the first run," Matt said. "I think no one felt too comfortable, but at least in the second run the first part felt really good so I cant complain." Matt was second in the slalom at Levi, Finland, last month and his most recent previous win was at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, in March 2011, while his first was nearly 14 years ago at Kitzbuehel, Austria. "We trained in great conditions this fall, so thats maybe why I am in good shape this early in the season," he said. It was another disappointing day for the United States when for the second straight day neither Ted Ligety, who finished the first run in 39th, nor Bode Miller, who went off course, qualified for the second run. They failed to finish the first run in Saturdays giant slalom. "It was tough conditions where it was very hard snow but very grippy," U.S. mens head coach Sasha Rearick said. "We have been trying on ice getting ready for Val dIsere, but we didnt make that transition very well today. So thats something were going to have to work on." They next head to Italy to prepare for Saturdays downhill at Val Gardena and Sundays giant slalom at Alta Badia. "It makes for a kind of interesting week, because youve got glidy, glidy, glidy at Val Garcena and youve got to be on your A game, clean skiing, for Alta Badia," Rearick said. Austrian Marcel Hirscher also failed to qualify. He won Saturdays GS but struggled on the tricky top section and finished way down in 41st. Matt, the slalom world champion in 2001 and 07, is coming into form at just the right time for Februarys Winter Olympics in Sochi. "Its still far away," Matt said. Hargin secured his first podium since finishing third at Schladming, Austria, in January 2011. "Ive been fighting a lot and it meant a lot to get the podium today," the 28-year-old said. "Weve worked really hard and we have a new coach this season." Thalers only other podium -- also third in a slalom at Kitzbuehel, Austria -- was even longer ago, in January 2009. "I think Im the oldest guy ever on the podium in the slalom," he said. "I was a bit emotional." Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Grange finished fourth, 0.04 behind Thaler, and Swedens Markus Larsson was fifth in a far-from-usual top five. Hirscher was aiming for a second consecutive podium double after winning last years GS and finishing third in the slalom, but he made a huge error on the top section and finished 4 seconds slower than Matt after an early-morning first run under clear, blue skies but with temperatures bitingly cold. After failing to make a GS second run for the first time in nearly five years, Ligety was 3.59 slower than Matt. Miller almost fell on the treacherous top section, recovered, but then lost control. Frenchman Alexis Pinturault --fourth in GS -- went off course near the bottom, while Austrias Manfred Pranger also veered off. On a brighter note for the Americans, David Chodounsky finished seventh for a career best slalom performance. "Val dIsere is really tough, steep," the 29-year-old said. "I was really happy with my first run, didnt quite have the confidence to go at it, but it was solid." wholesale jerseys . Henri Ikonen had a goal and an assist for Kingston (9-3-3), while Lucas Peressini made 30 saves for the win. One night after he was robbed by Pittsburghs third baseman on a rocket down the left-field line with the bases loaded in a game that would go 14 innings, Wigginton came through with a three-run double in the eighth, giving the first-place Rockies a 6-4 victory Saturday night. "The at-bat we needed to get, we got," said relieved Colorado manager Jim Tracy. "If he (Alvarez) had come up with that, it would have been heartbreaking." Wiggintons tie-breaking double and a strong outing from Greg Reynolds, making his first start for Colorado since 2008, gave the Rockies their second win of the series and kept them atop the NL West four straight days for the first time since 2006. With the bases loaded, Wigginton ripped his shot off reliever Jose Veras (0-1) and past Alvarez into the left-field corner. On Friday night, Alvarez made a backhanded stab on an eerily similar smash by Wigginton, bounced to his feet and threw out Colorados first baseman. "Im just glad I was able to get one by him today," said Wigginton, signed by the Rockies as a free agent in December. "At first, when I saw it going toward him and he was diving for it, my thought was uh-oh. But it got by him and Ill take it." At 5-2, the Rockies have tied the 1998 team for the second-best start in franchise history. Both of Colorados losses have been in extra innings, including a 4-3 setback in 14 on Friday, when Tracy was forced to use eight pitchers, including closer Huston Street for three innings. Matt Belisle (1-0), who has pitched in all three games of the series, got the win and Matt Lindstrom worked the ninth for his first save, getting Steve Pearce to hit into a game-ending double play. But the late-inning heroics may not have been possible if not for Reynolds, the former first-round pick who hasnt lived up to expectations because of a series of shoulder problems and an elbow injury sustained in spring training last year. Earlier this week, the 25-year-old said it was time for him "to put up or shut up." He put up, but was pulled after 88 pitches by Tracy. Reynolds allowed two runs and three hits, a more-than-respectable-clutch outing for the right-hander, who was called up because ace Ubaldo Jimenez is on the disabled list. "Greg really stepped up," Belisle said. Seth Smith homered for thee Rockies, lining a shot over the right-field wall that nearly rolled into a boat in the Allegheny River.dddddddddddd Ryan Doumit hit a two-run homer and Jose Tabata had a solo shot for Pittsburgh. The Pirates bullpen was also short-handed, forcing manager Clint Hurdle to use starter Kevin Correia in the ninth. Pittsburghs offence, which has yet to break out, generated few scoring chances. With the score tied 3-3, Veras walked Jonathan Herrera to open the eighth and Carlos Gonzalez followed with his third single. Veras struck out Troy Tulowitzki with a knee-buckling curveball and also fanned Smith, but hit Jose Lopez with a pitch to load the bases. Wigginton then jumped on Veras first pitch, pulling the ball past Alvarez, who missed it by inches. "This one I think was hit harder, and the only way he makes this play is if hes straddling the bag along the third base line," Hurdle said. "You pitch in traffic two straight nights, usually it doesnt end up well -- and weve done a lot of that the last two nights." Tracy was so low on options in his bullpen that he had Esmil Rogers, who started and won the series opener, warming up in the ninth. He was only going to use Belisle in an emergency, but the right-hander told his manager before the game that he could take the ball. "I told him from the get-go that Im ready to rock," Belisle said. Smith put the Rockies up 3-2 in the sixth with his homer. Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton grooved a 1-0 fastball that Smith crushed, driving it to right-centre. The ball hit a concrete walkway, hopped over a wall and rolled down an embankment and would have plopped into the murky river if it hadnt struck the boat docked outside the stadium. NOTES: Tabata has a nine-game hitting streak, the majors longest. ... Tracy reported that Jimenez was "really, really letting it go" while playing long toss on Friday, an encouraging sign for the right-hander, on the disabled list with a cut cuticle on his right thumb. Tracy said Jimenez, who hasnt pitched since the season opener, will throw a bullpen session Sunday. ... Rockies 1B Todd Helton didnt play because of a stiff lower back. Helton was scratched from the starting lineup Friday, but was used as a pinch-hitter in the 14th inning. Tracy said the club is being cautious with Helton and there has been no talk about putting him on the disabled list. "Thats not even been a point of discussion," Tracy said. ' ' '

SALT LAKE CITY -- Kyle Korver and Paul Millsap made themselves right at home in their return to Utah. Just when Atlanta seemed almost incapable of winning a road game, Korver and Millsap broke the hearts of the fans that cheered them for years to finally help the Hawks break through. Korver scored 26 points and Millsap added 23 against their former team as the Hawks outlasted the Utah Jazz 112-110 on Monday night to snap a six-game losing streak. Millsap said there were times were he almost felt like he wasnt playing on the road "I played in this gym for seven years. I felt real comfortable," he said after helping the Hawks end a 10-game road losing streak. Most of the Atlanta starting lineup spent significant time playing for the Jazz. DeMarre Carroll (2011-13), Korver (2007-10) and Millsap (2006-13) all received warm applause when they were introduced before the game. "It was like a reunion, a family reunion. I saw a lot of familiar faces," Millsap said. But familiarity didnt make it a cakewalk. Korver made all four of his 3-point attempts in his old stomping grounds but never felt totally safe. The Hawks blew a 17-point lead and it was like re-run Korver had seen dozens of times. "I was a part of so many games when the Jazz were down at halftime, just like tonight, and then came roaring back. The crowd gets behind them," Korver said. Jeff Teague had 14 points and the Hawks used a late 16-4 run to salvage a win at the end of a gloomy six-game road trip. The Jazz led 96-93 after Trey Burkes 3-pointer, but Korver started an 8-0 run with a 3-pointer and then a contested jumper to beat the shot clock. Trey Burke made a layup before Millsap countered with two free throws and Korver added two of his own to seemingly put the game out of reach. Trailing 109-100 with 26 seconds left, the Jazz made it interesting with 10 points in the last 16 seconds. "In the second half, we made a significant change but it was a little too late and they made some big shots down the stretch," said Burke, who scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half. Marvin Williams had 18 for the Jazz, who have lost six of their last seven. Carroll had 11 points as the trio of former Jazz-players-turned-Hawks combined for 15 of the Hawks 16 points in the game-clinching run. The Hawks led by 17 points in the first half before the Jazz rallied in the third quarter. Utah outscored Atlanta 36-19 in the period and capped an 18-7 run with Haywards rebound dunk just before the buzzer for an 80-78 edge. "We didnt respond to their pressure and it turned into a heck of a game," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. Millsap missed five games with a badly bruised knee and then struggled a bit in his first two games back in limited minutes. He regained his All-Star form against his former team, which decided to go with a youth movement and let him sign with the Hawks in the off-season. Millsap was 7 of 14 from the field and had eight rebounds to help the Hawks, who had a tough time matching up with the Jazz inside. Utah outrebounded Atlanta 45-34. The Hawks, desperately trying to hang on to the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot, finally started to see things click in Los Angeles on Saturday before losing 109-108 to the Clippers. "We felt like we needed this big-time. We felt like we fought hard in the previous game and just came up short. I hope this will a good momentum boost going forward. Teague, who missed a key free throw against the Clippers, missed two down the stretch again but made four to help Atlanta avoid its 15th loss in the last 16 games. The Hawks are 3 1/2 games in front of the Knicks in the race for the playoffs. The Jazz just finished their own nightmare of an extended road trip, losing five of their six games before outlasting Philadelphia 104-92 in the finale. The Hawks allowed an average of 113 points on better than 50-per cent shooting, including 44 per cent from 3-point range. But the Hawks made 13 of 29 from beyond the arc to get the win, which is their fourth straight at Utah after dropping their previous 15. "The Jazz have so much tradition and its like one big family here. Once youre part of the Jazz, you never leave all the way," Korver said. NOTES: Former Jazz Hall of Famer Karl Malone sat courtside and used a giant slingshot to hurl balls into the crowd during a timeout. ... Utahs 36 third-period points tied for the most against the Hawks this season. ... The 10 consecutive road losses were Atlantas worst away drought since losing the final 13 in 2006-07. . Bayern seemed distracted by its new Oktoberfest-inspired brown and white strip in the first half but stepped up its performance after Mario Mandzukic opened the scoring in the 51st minute. Franck Ribery pounced on a rebound to secure the win in the 64th. Former Bayern midfielder Luiz Gustavo was sent off for the second time in his third game for new club Wolfsburg, which lost 3-1 at Bayer Leverkusen. Kevin-Prince Boatengs first goal for Schalke was enough for a 1-0 win at Mainz. The former AC Milan midfielder ran at the home sides defence, feigned to shoot, and then unleashed a fine effort past Mainz goalkeeper Heinz Mueller in off the far post. Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-0 at 10-man Werder Bremen, and Augsburg came from behind to beat Freiburg 2-1. Borussia Dortmund aimed to maintain its winning start with victory over Hamburger SV at home later. Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger remained on the substitutes bench after failing to fully recover from the ankle injury that forced him out of Germanys recent World Cup qualifiers. Philipp Lahm lined up in midfield and Rafinha took Lahms normal position at right back. The home side might have scored in the seventh when Thomas Mueller hit the side netting from a difficult angle after hed rounded the goalkeeper. But Hannover grew into the game as Bayerns passing went astray, and Didier Ya Konan almost put the visitors ahead when his deflected shot struck the post before halftime. Arjen Robben was involved in both goals. The Dutch winger sent Toni Kroos through on the left to cross for Mandzukic to score with a simple finish. Ron-Robert Zieler savved Robbens effort from a tight angle after hed combined on the left with Ribery, only for the Frenchman to tuck away the rebound which fell kindly between two Hannover defenders.dddddddddddd. It was another day to forget for Luiz Gustavo, who was sent off in the 85th for a second yellow card, five minutes after earning the first for protesting a referees decision. Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes sprung the offside trap with a brilliant ball over the top for Sidney Sam to slot past Diego Benaglio in off the far post in the 24th. On his 34th birthday, Ivica Olic equalized with a volley in the 39th, before Luiz Gustavos long-range effort crashed back off the crossbar. Stefan Kiessling restored Leverkusens lead with a header from a free kick in the 65th, and then wrapped up the win with a wonderful strike in injury time. Vaclav Kadlec got Frankfurt off the mark in the 14th when he got ahead of his marker to convert Bastian Oczipkas cross from close range. Cedrick Makiadi struck the post as Bremen sought a response, before Franco di Santo was sent off in the 26th for catching Oczipka badly in the head with his boot. It got worse for Bremen in the 34th when Kadlec -- an off-season signing from Sparta Prague -- headed in his second. Aaron Hunt earned a dubious-looking penalty but the Bremen captain had his spot kick saved by Kevin Trapp, and an own goal from Sebastian Proedl in the 77th completed a miserable afternoon for the home side. Tobias Werners last-minute winner gave Augsburg three successive Bundesliga victories for the first time. Half-time substitute Admir Mehmedi scored seconds after going on for Freiburg, but Halil Altintop equalized in the 61st and Werner emerged to become the hero. ' ' '

SALT LAKE CITY -- Big Turk lived up to his nickname. After two games in which he was nearly invisible, Enes Kanter loomed large in the middle and scored 24 points to lift the Utah Jazz past the Washington Wizards 104-101 Saturday night. "The big man played big tonight," said Gordon Hayward, who hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to seal the win. Kanter made 11 of 13 shots and the Jazz overcame a 13-point deficit to take control in the fourth quarter and keep the Wizards from moving above the .500 mark for the first time in more than four years. Kanter also took the pressure off of Derrick Favours, who is dealing with a sore hip. "Enes was doing the scoring, so I just tried to go out there and play defence and get rebounds," said Favours, who had 11 points and 14 rebounds. Hayward finished with 16 points and Alec Burks added 15 as the Jazz swept the two games with the Wizards for the second straight season. Trevor Ariza led Washington with 23 points, including a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left that drew the Wizards within 101-98. John Wall banked in a 3-pointer to get within 102-101 with 3.6 seconds left, but Hayward made two free throws and Wall missed at the buzzer. Kanter scored a total of eight points in two blowout losses to Minnesota and drew his coachs ire for often being in the wrong spots. But in this one, Kanter consistently found himself in the right place at the right time -- picking up loose balls, making timely passes and changing the Wizards shots in the paint. "I personally was really bad two games against Minnesota, but tonight I wanted to come out with lots of energy," Kanter said. The muscular centre from Turkey displayed a deft shooting touch on jumpers and power moves to the basket. When Arizas 3-pointer cut the lead to 92-90, Kanter hit a jump shot. With 57 seconds left, he made two free throws to give Utah a 101-95 cushion after a nifty reverse-pivot down the lane that drew a foul. Utahs schedule has allowed for practices in the past few weeks and the young Jazz players have benefited from the extra work. "My coaches have given me a lot of confidence and weve been practicing really hard," Kanter said. "The things I have been trying to do and now showing in the games." Burks and Hayward drove through the Wizards defence for layups as the Jazz scored on four straight possessions to open the fourth quarter and take an 85-77 lead. "We did a good job of attacking them after playing inside-out. We attacked them in transition, attacked them in the half court," said Trey Burke, who had 12 points and eight assists. The Jazz seemed a step quicker to loose balls as the game wore on, but the Wizards made it interesting in the final minute before yet again failing to move above .500. "We were running in mud half the game, in my opinion," Washington coach Randy Wittman said. "We wouldnt commit ourselves to our pace." Ten times over the past five seasons, the Wizards have had a chance to surpass .500. Theyve lost every time. "I feel like we had this game won. We just didnt do a good job in stopping them and they just kept making good plays," Wall said. Wizards last won a game to go above .500 on Oct. 31, 2009, when they beat the New Jersey Nets to improve to 2-1. They lost to Cleveland on Nov. 3 and havent had a winning record since. The Wizards, who led most of the game, have lost this season at 0-0, 9-9, 14-14, 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21. No one on the current Wizards roster was on the team when it was last above .500. Though Utah is at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, the Jazz are competitive when healthy. The starting lineup of Burke, Hayward, Marvin Williams, Richard Jefferson and Favours is 12-8 this season. Favours was a game-time decision but felt his right hip strain had healed enough to give it a go and the Jazz needed his defence and rebounding prowess. When Favors needed a rest, Kanter made his presence known, especially with his 10 points in the fourth quarter. After stumbling through a subpar January, Ariza has found his groove. He scored 23 points in a win over Phoenix Friday and made 6 of 10 3-pointers against Utah. But his fellow perimeter players couldnt find their range. Beal was 5 of 16 and Wall made just 4 of 14 attempts from the field. "I thought Trey and the guys playing Wall made him work for everything he got," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. Nene had 19 points, including a handful of emphatic dunks, and Marcin Gortat had 14 points and 11 rebounds, but they couldnt stop Kanter when it mattered most. NOTES: The Jazz claimed third-year forward Malcolm Thomas off waivers on Saturday. He has appeared in 16 career NBA games over three seasons with San Antonio (this season), Golden State and Chicago, averaging 1.1 points and 1.8 rebounds in 5.4 minutes. . Sweezy was the one part of the Seattle Seahawks offensive line that had avoided injuries or having to change positions this season.CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Quarterback Andy Dalton and receiver A.J. Green hit it off right away, realizing their personalities and talents were a good fit at the NFL scouting combine. When the Cincinnati Bengals drafted Green in the first round and Dalton in the second last April, they had already hit it off. "Once training camp started, the way we were able to connect, and bond on the field started to increase," Dalton said. "It was early on." In only a few months, theyve become one of the NFLs most dangerous pass-and-catch pairings. Greens 51-yard catch-and-run off a trusting throw from Dalton set up Cincinnatis 23-20 win over Cleveland on Sunday that kept the Bengals (7-4) in the playoff hunt. It also threw another chill into opposing defensive backs, who arent going to relish facing this duo for years to come. "Theyre well beyond their years as far as athletically and their knowledge of football," offensive co-ordinator Jay Gruden said. "Theyre going to get better, but we totally expect them to be at the top of their game, the top of the NFL game right now, and they are now." Theyre just getting started. Dalton, the 35th overall pick out of TCU, and Green, the fourth pick from Georgia, already are one of the best rookie duos in recent decades. Theyve combined for five touchdown passes, the fourth-highest total for a rookie quarterback and receiver since 1950, according to STATS LLC. New Englands Jim Plunkett and Randy Vataha had nine in 1971; Clevelands Tim Couch and Kevin Johnson had eight in 1999; St. Louis Tony Banks and Eddie Kennison had seven in 1996. The Bengals duo has accounted for 43 completions, fourth-most since 1991, according to STATS. Couch and Johnson had 57 in 1999, when the Browns returned as an expansion team. Dalton and Green have accounted for 704 yards together, the third-highest total since 1991. Couch and Johnson had 859 yards. They have five games left to climb in those categories, using their big-play abilities to pull out games and keep the Bengals one of the NFLs biggest surprises. "You put somebody one-on-one with A.J., and you (just) throw the ball down the field," left tackle Andrew Whitworth said. "You can talk about Xs and Os all you want, but that X is pretty special." They started showing it early on. During the Bengals second practice of training camp, Dalton severely underthrew a long pass down the right sideline. Green was able to stop, come back toward the ball and jump over safety Chris&nbssp;Crockers shoulder to make a sensational catch that showed Dalton something.dddddddddddd "I remember we had a double move on, and I underthrew it a little bit and he jumped over a couple guys and made the catch," Dalton said. Dalton never again hesitated just to throw it Greens way. During a game against Pittsburgh on Nov. 13, Dalton eluded the rush and saw Green heading into the end zone with both Steelers safeties around him. He let it fly, and Green jumped above Troy Polamalu for a 36-yard touchdown. Green hyperextended his right knee when he landed on the play, forcing him to the sideline for most of the 24-17 loss and a 31-24 loss in Baltimore the following week. He was back to making the game-changing play against Cleveland. "Ive always thought hes special," Whitworth said. "Youve got a guy that anytime you get one more shot, hes got a shot to go up and get it. Any play can be the next best play. Thats just how he is." His play against the Browns set up the winning field goal and prompted coach Marvin Lewis to gush, something he rarely does. "Hes the best first-round draft pick Ive ever been around," said Lewis, who was the defensive co-ordinator in Baltimore when linebacker Ray Lewis was a first-round pick in 1996. "He continues to amaze me." Green expects the ball his way even when hes covered. "Its like a dream when Im 1-on-1," said Green, who leads NFL rookies in yards receiving and touchdowns. "Im thinking that anywhere he throws the ball gives me a chance to make the catch." Dalton has been nearly as impressive in his own way. The NFLs lockout prevented him from learning a new offence over the summer. He had only two weeks to get ready for the first pre-season game once training camp opened. Dalton already has set a Bengals rookie record with 16 touchdown passes overall. Peyton Manning holds the season record for a rookie with 26 in 1998. Dalton, too, is doing things rarely accomplished by a rookie. "He keeps doing it," Whitworth said. "Ive said since we showed up in July that I thought there was something special about him." Their biggest test comes Sunday in Pittsburgh (8-3), where the Bengals need a win to stay in the AFC North race. Its likely to come down to the two rookies. "Usually, its so rare to see rookies come in and do so well," Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "And then to see the two of them do it like that, thats an awesome chemistry." ' ' '

PHILADELPHIA -- Daniel Ciampini broke a third-period tie with the second of his three goals to help Union beat Boston College 5-4 in the NCAA hockey semifinals Thursday night. The Dutchmen (31-6-4) advanced to the final for the first time. They will face Minnesota -- a 2-1 winner over North Dakota in second semifinal-- in the championship game Saturday night. Mat Bodie and Mike Vecchione also scored and Colin Stevens made 34 saves for Union. Johnny Gaudreau, Steve Santini, Ryan Fitzgerald and Patrick Brown scored for Boston College (28-8-4). Ciampini broke a 2-2 tie on a power play at 6:31 of the third period, tipping in Shayne Gostisbeheres one-timer from the point. "I got very, very lucky," Ciampini said. "Shayne blasted my stick away there -- it broke on the tip. Its good that I can produce." Only 18 seconds later, Unions Matt Hatch was given a major penalty and game misconduct for checking Scott Savage from behind into the boards, giving Boston College a 5-minute power play. "We were pretty sure if we kill that, we get the momentum," Gostisbehere said. The Eagles failed to score and, only seconds after the power play ended, Vecchione gave Union a two-goal advantage off a rebound after goalie Thatcher Demko stopped Kevin Sullivan on a breakaway attempt. "Theyre a great shot-blocking team," Brown said. "I was in front and I couldnt even see the puck because they had two or three guys in the lane every time." "We just never quite got in sync on that major penalty," Boston College coach Jerry York said. With Demko off for an extra attacker, Fitzgerald cut it 4-3 with 1:45 to go. Ciampini restored the two-goal margin with an empty-net goal with 1:09 left, and Brown completed the scoring on a power play with 4.2 seconds to go. Heres what I have learned about Sarah Burke. She was a pioneer. She did things on skis that made the birds take notice. Sarah Burke was a crusader. For years she fought to get womens halfpipe recognized as a sport. She was a dreamer too. Her mom, Jan Phelan, told me that even as a little kid she wanted to ski in the Olympics. Jan still lives and makes art only a few blocks away from her daughters house in Squamish, B.C. A few weeks before the Sochi Olympics I went to meet her to talk about her daughters legacy. She told me about how when Sarah took up halfpipe as a teenager, as the only woman in the sport, she competed against men. “So she said , Okay, I will compete against the senior men. And so she came fourth, and landed the first 1080 in a competition. And so of all of these men, many of whom were on the world cup circuit, Sarah, this little kid came fourth. Isnt that something?" Thats how Sarah Burke first put womens halfpipe on the map. But she didnt stop there. Jan remembers proofreading the emails Sarah wrote when she was 14 to the X Games asking them why women couldnt compete. At events Sarah tracked down officials and demanded women be given a chance. For years she was turned down. “She would be crying in her goggles and venting her frustration and then she would say, Okay, I am going to go back and talk to them again. I could just imagine the tears filling up her goggles because she was so mad. And she had worked so hard at it.” Some super sad times I met Sarahs husband, Rory Bushfield, on his driveway. And in a matter of moments he had conviced me to put his bike in our little CBC rental car and shuttle him up a mountain so he could go for a ride. We obliged. “Its been two years since Sarah passed and I have gone through some super sad times but everything about Sarah is easy to smile about. She did it with grace, and she did it with class, pushed herself in the right places, skied half pipe like a champion, did so many first tricks for women that had never been done, you know, continued to push and continued to push.” Finally, in 2005, Sarah broke through. Her work paid off. Womens halfpipe got a spot in the world championships. Sarah won gold, and in her post-run interview she kept on pushing: “I am keeping my fingers crossed for the Olympics, we are only get better and I am hoping to get it in there.” But Sarah would never make it to the Olympics. On Jan. 19, 2012, Sarah Burke died after a crash while training in Utah. But in a way she won her fight. She got her sport into the Olympics. And so in Sochi, when the women drop into the halfpipe for the first time, Sarahs dream will have come true. Canadian slopestyle Spencer OBrien was a close friend of Burkes, and after her qualifying runs she showed me the little tape banner that still hangs on her board two years after Sarah died. Jan Phelan is making the long trip from Squamish to Sochi. She wants to stand near the halfpipe as the women compete and witness her daughters legacy. “If you had asked me, before this happened, what was the worst thing in my life would be, it would be to lose a child. To lose Sarah. I now know that there is one thing worse and that is to never have had her at all. Right. So what that tells me is to look at all these wonderful things she did accomplish and to enjoy them, let them bring you happiness.” http://www.nflvikingsus.com/Womens-Blair-Walsh-Authentic-Jersey/ . NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets are so good at home now that even the Houston Rockets cant beat them. The Nets clinched a playoff berth by beating the Rockets at home for the first time in 11 years, getting 32 points from Joe Johnson in a 105-96 victory on Tuesday night. Shaun Livingston added 17 points for the Nets, who extended their home winning streak to 14 games, longest in their NBA history and tops in the league this season. They finished 18-12 overall against the Western Conference. "Weve just been playing and trying to protect home court. They came in here and we try to send them on their way with a loss, and thats for everybody," Livingston said. "It just happens to be weve been playing good basketball against the West." The Nets ended a 14-game skid against Houston with their first victory in the series since March 13, 2006. The Nets hadnt defeated the Rockets at home since March 31, 2003, when they were still playing in East Rutherford, N.J. The Nets also pulled within 1 1/2 games of Toronto and Chicago for the No. 3 seed in the East and home-court advantage in the first round, quite a change for a team that was so bad during its 10-21 start that Johnson had trouble envisioning where it is right now. "Honestly, I couldnt even see it," he said. "I kept saying to myself eventually this is going to turn around, things are going to turn for us. Eventually it did starting the new year. We were a different team, our mindset was different and the way we played was different." James Harden scored 26 points for Houston, which lost its second straight following a five-game winning streak. Still without Dwight Howard because of a sore left ankle, the Rockets shot just 38 per cent from the field. "We just missed some shots, missed some opportunities," Harden said of the Rockets, also without starters Patrick Beverley and Terrence Jones. "We let them get too comfortable early in the game. They got it going and it was tough." Harden was 16 of 16 from the free-throw line. Omer Asik had 12 points and a career-high 23 rebounds while starting for Howard, while Jeremy Lin and Chandler Parsons each added 16 points. The Nets held the NBAs second-highest scoring team 11 points below its average and improved to 30-12 overall since Jan. 1. They havent lost at Barclays Center in more than two months and make just a short trip Wednesday to visit the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. "We know these games, even if you say they dont mean more, they mean a lot more, I think, just because of the rivalry thats been formed," Nets guard Deron Williams said. Brooklyn had six players score in double figures in its third win in a row overall. It was once again without starting centre Kevin Garnett because of back spasms, as it was all March while going 12-4, as well as key reserves Andrei Kirilenko (sprained left ankle) and Marcus Thornton (back). The Nets shot 59 per cent in the first quarter, getting 11 points from Johnson in taking a 29-24 lead. Houston moved ahead for the first time midway through the second, but Brooklyn put together an 11-0 spurt late in the half and took a 54-51 edge into the break. The Nets opened their largest lead when Johnsons 3-pointer made it 78-67 with 4:03 left in the third, but the Rockets were back within one before Johnson nailed another 3 with 45 seconds remaining to send Brooklyn to the fourth with an 83-79 advantage. Brooklyn put it away midway through the fourth, re-opening an 11-point lead on a questionable goaltending call that gave a basket to rookie Jorge Gutierrez and earned Rockets coach Kevin McHale a technical foul for arguing. McHale was more frustrated with Houstons lack of ball movement. "I dont know how (long) you have to play with somebody to throw the ball to the open man," he said. "What, youve got to know him personally?" NOTES: McHale said Howard had received another shot in the ankle, saying there was mostly soft tissue inflammation that hopefully would calm down. The All-Star centre has missed five of the last seven games. ... Delmas, 21, played in two games with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs in 2010-11, posting a 1-0-1 record, 1.OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant wasnt sure at first that he wanted to be a movie star and a basketball star. It took some peer pressure and some encouragement from his mother, but now Durant is bringing Hollywood to Oklahoma City for a few days. The two-time NBA scoring champion filmed scenes from the upcoming movie "Thunderstruck" Tuesday at the teams home arena, including the pivotal sequence when his basketball skills are magically switched with a clumsy teenager to throw the Thunders playoff hopes into question. "Thats not my style, man. Doing a movie? Im a low key guy, and thats something I didnt want to get into," Durant said. Durant plays himself in the movie. Nickelodeon star Taylor Gray misses a halfcourt shot so badly that it hits Oklahoma Citys mascot, Rumble, in the arena tunnel and he tracks down the ball at the same time as Durant. He says he wishes he could play as well as Durant, and the Thunder superstar says he wishes he could help. The wish magically gets granted, with the downside being that Durant suddenly has the skills of a kid who couldnt make his own high school basketball team. "It was pretty cool. Im going to be nervous about how people view the movie and how they think my performance was," Durant said. "I really dont care now. I did it, it was fun, I enjoyed myself, I made some friends along the way, so I think it was a success." Durant follows in the footsteps of Michael Jordans "Space Jam" and Shaquille ONeals "Kazaam," leaving his acting performance to be evaluated by movie critics or the general public, for better or worse. "I really didnt know what nailed it was. People told me I did a good job but they could just be blowing smoke," Durant said. "I didnt know what was going on. People said I did good, so I guess Ill take their word." Brandon T. Jackson, a veteran of "Tropic Thunder" and "Big Mommas House," gave Durants acting skills a thumbs up and joked that his biggest challenge was that his "neck hurts from saying my lines to him." "Some basketball players are not good actors. Hes really good. Lets just say it bluntly," said Jackson, who plays Durants agent in the movie "Hes really good, for it to be his first movie. I remember my first movie, I was shaky and scared and just saying lines that werent even on the page -- which turned out to be funny llater on.dddddddddddd" Durants real-life agent, Eric Goodwin, found the script and presented the idea to producer Mike Karz and director John Whitesell. Karz did some exploring and was impressed with Durants personality and how he handled himself in interviews in front of the camera. "Certainly, weve seen it work both ways in the history of movies. But with Kevin, we just had a feeling. ... Clearly, he seems like just a fantastic guy. And when we met him, we were correct. He is a great guy," Karz said. "And his persona, his true life persona, reflects itself in the movie because he does play himself -- hes very sweet, compassionate guy and in the movie he has this magical thing that happens to him which makes his life worse initially and ultimately it all works out in the end." Karz said producers even decided to include Durant in additional scenes after he handled it well in the early days of shooting. The Warner Bros. crews spent about three weeks in Louisiana in September, completing about 80 per cent of the movie, and plan to finish up the filming with Wednesday nights game against New Orleans. "He is a world-class athlete, one of the best in the world, and when he does something he does it with 100 per cent commitment and passion and thats the way he approached the movie," Karz said. "He rehearsed, he ran his lines, he worked with the other actors and he just approached it like it was a big game and did the best he could." The film is expected to come out later this year, possibly as early as April. It also stars Jim Belushi and William Ragsdale. "Ive done commercials before but that was just like a commercial on steroids, as you would say," Durant said. "It was so much time put into one scene. We would go over it three or four times. It was just a lot of work. I see what those guys go through over there acting. "It was different, it was cool, it was fun but it was one of those things that I would pass on doing the next time." Durant said the initial filming session included days when he was on set from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. and scenes were repeated 20 times or more. That the filming took place during the NBA lockout helped, but he said hes not sure if hes willing to devote that much time to doing another film. He may just stick to 30-second commercials instead. "Im done," he said. "Im just playing basketball." ' ' '

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Kevin Durant said the mutual admiration between the Thunder and the Trail Blazers only goes so far. "We respect this team and they respect us, but we dont like them and they dont like us," Durant said after Oklahoma Citys hard-fought 98-95 victory over Portland on Tuesday night. "Point blank." Durant had 36 points and 10 rebounds as the Thunder evened the series against the Blazers 2-2 in their final regular-season meeting this year. Jeremy Lamb had 19 points, including a key 3-pointer with 1:38 left for the Western Conference-leading Thunder, who have won 14 of their last 16 games. Nicolas Batum had 18 points for slumping Portland, which has lost five of seven but still ranks third in the conference behind San Antonio. Robin Lopez finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season. LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed a mid-range jumper in the final seconds that could have salvaged the win for Portland, was asked what he thought of Durants comment. "Were not trying to make friends out there," he said. "Were trying to win games." Portland led by as many as 13 points in the first half and held a 55-45 advantage at the break, but the Thunder kept chipping away and the teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 80. Derek Fisher hit a 3-pointer and Lamb made a layup to put the Thunder up 85-84. Portland reclaimed the lead on rookie CJ McCollums running shot, but Durant re-tied it at 91 with a long hook. The teams wrestled for the lead until Lambs 3-pointer gave the Thunder a 96-95 advantage. Damian Lillard missed a 3-pointer for Portland with 45.9 seconds left. Portland got the ball with 12.3 seconds left after officials reviewed an out-of-bounds call, but LaMarcus Aldridges mid-range jumper with 2 seconds left was off and Reggie Jackson hit free throws for the final margin. "We fought hard," Durant said. "Were a resilient team. Weve kept our heads up through adversity and tough times. Im proud of our team." Portland won two of the first three meetings between the two teams, but the Thunder won the last 105-97 in Oklahoma City last month. Durant paced the Thunder with 42 points in that one. Aldridge was a game-time decision because of soreness, but he started and finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Blazers are the only team that has started the same five players in all of their games this season.dddddddddddd Aldridge was disappointed with the loss -- and especially his final missed shot. "I couldnt throw a rock in a lake tonight," Aldridge said. Portland jumped out to a quick 18-6 lead, but the Blazers were hurt late in the opening quarter when reserve forward Joel Freelands right knee buckled underneath him and he had to be helped off the court. The extent of the injury was not immediately known, but the Blazers depend on the 6-foot-11 Brit to spell starting centre Lopez. The Thunder closed to 25-21 on Lambs 12-foot jumper early in the second quarter. Portland held them off, but Lambs dunk narrowed it to 34-32 and the Thunder finally pulled ahead 41-39 on Lambs 3-pointer. The Blazers answered with a 16-4 run to take a 55-45 lead into halftime. The Thunder again threatened when Kendrick Perkins jumper got them within 66-63. Serge Ibakas jumper with 2:18 left in the third finally gave Oklahoma City a 76-75 lead, their first of the second half. Jackson led the rally with 13 points after going 0-for-6 in the first half. The teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 80. "It was a physical game, but I like the fact that we kept competing and didnt let anything bother us," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "We just competed, possession by possession. And thats what good teams do." The Blazers were coming off a 2-2 road trip, including 117-110 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. Following the loss to the Thunder, they were headed to Los Angeles for a game against the Clippers on Wednesday night before the All-Star break. The Thunder were coming off a 112-100 victory over the New York Knicks, with Durants 41 points leading the way. HARTFORD, Conn. -- Connecticut went down to the wire with another opponent. This time there was no clutch shot by Shabazz Napier. UConns star guard, known for heroics such as a last-second shot that beat Florida earlier this month, missed three times in the final 40 seconds and the 10th-ranked Huskies lost for the first time this season, 53-51 to Stanford. "With Shabazz, you live with that, because hes put this team on his back a lot of times," UConn coach Kevin Ollie said. "But he could have taken it to the basket a couple of times, but he settled for the long 3-ball." Chasson Randle scored 22 points and the Cardinal (8-2) beat a Top 25 team away from Palo Alto for the first time since the 2008 NCAA tournament. The Cardinals previous seven wins this season came over teams that were a combined 32-41. "I think its an important win for our conference," Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said, referring to the Pac-12. "A number of teams have had some real signature wins, and Im just happy that we were able to have one as well." Josh Huestis added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Dwight Powell had 10 points and 15 rebounds for Stanford which overcame a 10-point halftime deficit. DeAndre Daniels had 15 points for UConn (9-1), which was 6 of 10 from behind the arc in the first half and 0 for 12 in the second. Connecticut this season already had beaten Maryland, Indiana and Florida by a point and won by two against Boston College. But the Huskies could not get a clutch basket down the stretch against Stanford. Randles jump shot with 3 1/2 minutes left gave the Cardinal a 52-49 lead. The Huskies pulled within a point when Daniels tipped in a missed 3-point attempt by Niels Giffey. Napier, who finished with 12 points and eight assists, missed two 3-pointers on a key possession with the Huskies trailing 52-51. Stanford got the ball back with 28 seconds left after a scrum underneath the basket. Napier fouled Huestis on the inbounds play and he hit one of two free throws. Napier missed another shot with 8 seconds left, forcing UConn to foul again. He got the ball back on a rebound after Huestis missed another free throw; dribbled down the court, but instead of trying a contested shot, he passed to Omar Calhoun. His long jumber from the right wing bounced off the rim. "I felt like Omar was the most open guy at the time," Napier said. "I felt like it was going to go in, and I bet he did too." UConn led by 10 points at halftime and pushed the lead to 43-30, before consecutive 3-pointers by Anthony Brown and Randle. That started a 14-0 run by the Cardinal, who used a stifling zone defence to hold the Huskies without a field goal for more than 6 minutes. The Huskies were just 5 of 31 from the field in the second half. "It was just a matter of us being aggressive on the defensive end," Randle said. "Just being active, getting our hands moving, getting our feet moving and getting our feet moving and just hustling." A driving basket and free throw by Randle gave Stanford its first lead of the second half at 44-43. The Huskies closed the first half on a 14-3 run that ended when Napier stole the ball from Randle and found Lasan Kromah ahead of the field for an easy layup just before buzzer. UConn came in shooting better than 46 per cent from beyond the arc, with five players having made 10 or more 3-pointers. The loss snapped a 54-game home winning streak against nonconference opponents that dated to 2007. Connecticut was coming off its annual hiatus for final exams. The Huskies had not played in 12 days, since a 95-68 win over Maine, a game in which UConn hit 14 3-pointers. Stanford ended a 13-day break last Saturday with a 27-point win over UC Davis. UConn plays at Washington, another Pac-12 team, on Saturday. The Huskies had dominated that conference, coming into Wednesday they were 17-2 and had won 13 straight since falling to UCLA in the 1995 NCAA West Regional championship. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Texas Rangers needed a reason to feel good about themselves on getaway day before starting a pivotal six-game homestand that includes a series against the team theyre fighting for the AL West title. They got it from a bullpen that ate up 5 2-3 innings and prevented a three-game sweep by the Los Angeles Angels, a team they will face in a four-game series that wraps up the regular season schedule. Alex Rios homered in the first and drove in the go-ahead run with a bloop double in the seventh, Elvis Andrus also had two RBIs, and the Rangers hung on for a 4-3 victory Sunday. They remained 1 1-2 games out of first place, as Oakland beat Houston 7-2 to complete a three-game sweep. "It was a very big win. We needed it bad," manager Ron Washington said. "They took the lead, but we didnt give in. We just kept fighting and were able to make some good things happen. Its only one win, but it was huge." Angels rookie Buddy Boshers walked Leonys Martin with one out in the seventh and Ian Kinsler greeted Michael Kohn (1-2) with a ground-rule double into the left field corner. Andrus followed with a looper into right-centre and was robbed of a hit on a diving catch by right fielder Kole Calhoun, but Martin scored the tying run on the sacrifice fly. "Youve got to find a way to win games, and sometimes its going to be with bloopers," Andrus said. "It was a tremendous play by Martin, to be able to read that flyball and the fielder at the same time and then tag up." Centre fielder Mike Trout then attempted a diving catch on another Texas leaguer by Rios in left-centre, but missed it as Kinsler scored. "You could call it a break," Washington said. "Sometimes in a game, you need breaks. But you make your breaks by making contact. And when you make contact, things can happen." Alexi Ogando (6-4) got the victory with 1 1-3 scoreless innings. Neal Cotts gave up a leadoff double in the eighth to Calhoun, who advanced on Mark Trumbos groundout and was stranded when Tanner Scheppers struck out Hank Conger with the infield in and retired Grant Green on a flyball to centre. "Trumbo hits the ball to the right side to get the runner to third, and Im sitting there and saying: We need a strikeout here," Washington said. "We got the strikeout, then he made Green put the ball in play and we got a line drive to Martin. There was the good inning right there, and we certainly needed that." Joe Nathan, the seventh Rangers pitcher, got three outs in the ninth for his 39th save in 41 attempts and helped themm avoid what would have been the Angels first three-game sweep against them since September 2009.dddddddddddd. "Fortunately weve got 12 or 13 guys out there in the pen, so weve got plenty of arms to stretch it out," Nathan said. "We feel confident in all of those guys -- not just to bring them out in the fourth and fifth inning, but to come in late in the game in tight situations. We love when our starters go deep -- but when this is what we need to do on a given day, were more than glad to do that. Weve got guys with experience who know how to throw the baseball." Rangers rookie Nick Tepesch was charged with two runs and four hits in 3 1-3 innings and struck out five in his first start off the disabled list, after pitching 3 1-3 innings out of the bullpen at Oakland last Monday in his first relief outing in the big leagues. The 24-year-old right-hander was winless in eight consecutive starts before beating Houston on July 5, then was sidelined with inflammation in his elbow. Tepesch was lifted after 63 pitches with a runner at first and the score tied 1-all. Trumbo was held at third on Congers double to left field, and subsequently erased in a rundown on Greens fielders choice grounder to third baseman Adrian Beltre. But No. 9 hitter Andrew Romine lined the next pitch down the left field line for a two-run double that put the Angels ahead 3-1. The Rangers got one of the runs back in the fifth on an Andrus RBI single against Jason Vargas, who allowed two runs and six hits over six innings and struck out eight. Rios, the third batter Vargas faced, homered to left-centre for his 16th this season and fourth against the Halos. Kole Calhoun tied it with his sixth of the season leading off the second. "You never know where numbers are going to end up for a young player, but theres absolutely no doubt that he has the ability to drive the ball," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Hes a strong little guy. What his numbers will end up being, thats just going to be a function of him just continuing to put good swings on the ball." NOTES: Rangers opening day starter Matt Harrison, whose season ended after his second outing on April 6 because of back problems that required surgery twice in a span of nine days to repair a herniated disc, is scheduled to undergo Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery on his right side in Dallas on Monday. Harrison missed the final three months of the 2009 campaign because of the same ailment, then won 18 games last season to tie Kenny Rogers 2004 club record for left-handers. ... Andrus stole his 36th and 37th bases, tying his career best from 2011. ' ' '

REGINA -- Even a new head coach couldnt help the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Saskatchewan Roughriders crushed the Blue Bombers 52-0 on Sunday, dealing Tim Burke a loss in his CFL debut as a head coach. Burke replaced the fired Paul LaPolice last weekend. "Im not used to getting my ass kicked," Burke said. "We got down early and the score snowballed." Saskatchewan took full advantage of the reeling Bombers, ending a five-game losing streak to stay competitive in the CFL West. The Roughriders are now 4-5, but within reach of the third-place Calgary Stampeders in the hotly-contested division. "Our guys are hungry," said Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin. "They needed this. This is the one we really needed to move on." Saskatchewan amassed a net offence of 422 yards compared to a meagre 102 for Winnipeg (2-7). "I cant think of any aspect of the game that we won," said Burke. Bombers quarterback Joey Elliot thinks his team needs to regroup and refocus. "We have to move on to the game next week," said Elliott, who completed nine of 19 passes for only 61 yards with one interception. His reliever Alex Brink was also ineffective, completing five of seven passes for 35 yards. "When the wheels fall off, the wheels fall off," said Elliott. "Its going to happen. The best thing about it is that weve got another game in seven days." Chamblin, on the other hand, was pleased with his teams performance in every aspect. "We would win in a couple of phases, each one would take its turn," said Chamblin. "But today we won in all phases." Darian Durant threw touchdown passes of 25 and 21 yards to Weston Dressler. He left the game early in the third quarter with what appeared to be a lower-body injury and was replaced by backup quarterback Drew Willy, who fired a 43-yard touchdown pass to Terence Jeffers-Harris. Willy also scored a touchdown himself on a one-yard plunge late in the game. Durant completed 13 of 19 passes for 168 yards, and also carried the ball four times for 38 yards. According to Chamblin, he was kept out of the game strictly as a precaution. Saskatchewans Kory Sheets rushed for 106 yards, including a lengthy 37-yard dash. He also caught two passes for a total of 16 yards. Tyron Brackenridge blocked a Mike Renaud punt and returned it 15 yards for a Saskatchewan touchdown. He also intercepted an Elliott pass and returned it 39 yards to set up a field goal. Sandro DeAngelis converted all four Rider majors and kicked field goals of 50, 29, 46, 30 and 26 yards. Chris Milo added punt singles of 39 and 68 yards. The Riders led 10-0 after the first quarter, 28-0 at the half and 42-0 after three quarters. Last year Saskatchewan defeated Winnipeg 21-7 in the Labour Day Classic. The Riders have now prevailed in eight straight. The last time the Bombers won it was in 2004. The two teams meet again in Winnipeg next Sunday in the Banjo Bowl. Burke, for one, is hoping for better results. "All I can do is try my best," he said. LOUIS -- T. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Eleven days after he was released by the Baltimore Orioles, Steve Pearce was a huge reason they beat Tampa Bay. Pearce hit a two-run homer and made a game-saving defensive play Thursday night in Baltimores 3-1 victory over the Rays. Pearce, who re-signed with the Orioles two days after his April 27 release, hit his second homer in three games. Ubaldo Jimenez (2-4) won his second straight start as Baltimore completed a three-game sweep. The home run by Pearce came off David Price after J.J. Hardys double in the second inning. Playing first base in place of injured slugger Chris Davis, Pearce also made an outstanding stretch to catch a throw from Hardy that completed an inning-ending double play in the fifth. "Stevie may have made the defensive play of the night," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. Rays manager Joe Maddon challenged the call, but the ruling that Pearce kept his foot on the bag was confirmed after a 2-minute review. "The bases were loaded at the time, so if that got past me it could have cleared the bases," said Pearce, who had to wait for the replay decision to be sure the call was right. "It happened so fast and when you look, youre not on the bag anymore, so it depends on what happens." Nick Markakis extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the Baltimore third. Evan Longoria hit a two-out RBI single in the first off Jimenez, who pitched 5 1-3 innings for his second win after going 0-4 in his first month with the Orioles. "Im really happy April is gone,," Jimenez said.dddddddddddd. "Now its May and everything is good." Singles by Adam Jones, Pearce and Jonathan Schoop produced Baltimores final run in the fourth. Darren ODay worked the ninth for his second save. The Rays have scored only eight runs in losing five straight games to Baltimore. They left 11 runners on base in this one. "Our goal right now is to figure out a way to get through it," Longoria said. "We all want to win. We all want to do our part. When it doesnt work out, its definitely frustrating." Price (3-3) gave up nine hits and three runs while striking out three in five-plus innings. It was the 16th time in their last 23 games that a Rays starting pitcher has failed to pitch into the sixth inning. Tampa Bay pitching coach Jim Hickey was ejected in the first inning for arguing a checked swing by Jones. ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals signed free-agent second baseman Mark Ellis to a one-year, $5.25 million contract, giving them insurance for rookie Kolten Wong. In a conference call after the deal was announced Monday, the 36-year-old Ellis said he had some multiyear offers but chose the Cardinals because he wants to win a World Series. Ellis played for the Dodgers in the NL championship series last fall against St. Louis, which won the Series in 2011 and lost in six games to the Red Sox in 2013. "I am fully fine with one-year deals at this point in my career," Ellis said. "There were some good opportunities, very good teams and very good organizations. I felt like this was the perfect place for myself and my family." The contract calls for an additional $125,000 at 250 plate appearances and for every 25 plate appearances after that up to 475 plate appearances. "Nothing was promised," Ellis said. "Ive pretty much been an everyday player my whole career. Im going to prepare this off-season like Im going to play 162 games." Ellis is a lifetime .265 hitter for three teams. He hit .270 with six home runs and 48 RBIs for the Dodgers last season, and is considered a strong defensive second baseman. Hes had only spot duty at other infield positions during his career, but was open to that option, noting he played third base two years in college and was a shortstop growing up. "Im not so stubborn I have a huge ego that I have to be the second baseman," Ellis said. "I dont care. I want to do whatever it takes to win a World Series." Wong, a first-round pick in 2011, made his major league debut last year and is expected to get the starting shot at second base in 2014. Matt Carpenter moves to third base following the trade of David Freese to the Angels and Ellis provides a right-handed hitting option, plus hes open to a mentor role. Before learning of Carpenters position switch, Ellis hadnt thought the Cardinals would be a good fit. "Mark is a player we identified early-on as being an ideal fit for our team," general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. "His experience and steadiness, both in the field and at the plate, certainly enhances our overall roster makeup." Ellis has appeared in 22 post-season games and batted .240 in the NLCS last fall with a double, triple and stolen base. Ellis has hit 20 or more doubles nine of the past 10 years and is a career .276 hitter with a .348 on-base percentage against left-handed pitching. THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Even with a two-shot lead going into the final round of a tournament he had won five times, Tiger Woods expected a fight to finish from Zach Johnson. He never could have imagined how Johnson would steal the show at Sherwood. Johnson was four shots behind with eight holes to play against the No. 1 player in the world. He was playing his fourth shot on the par-4 closing hole from 58 yards away in a drop area, figuring his only chance was to get up-and-down for a bogey and hope that Woods couldnt convert a par from a tough spot in the bunker. What unfolded was hard to believe for the largest crowd ever at Sherwood. Johnson holed out with a wedge to make par. Woods hit an exquisite bunker shot to match par and force a playoff. And the final edition of the World Challenge at Sherwood ended on the first extra hole when Woods missed a 5-foot par putt. "I feel very fortunate and somewhat lucky," Johnson said. He also was very good. Johnson made two birdies and an 8-foot par putt to get within one shot. He nearly holed out a wedge from 88 yards on the par-5 16th hole to match birdies with Woods, who got up-and-down from left of the green. Johnson covered the flag with a tee shot on the par-3 17th hole that landed 4 feet away for a birdie to tie Woods. And then came a big moment that for so many years seemed to be the kind of shot belonging to Woods. "Im trying to get somewhat around the hole and make a 5," Johnson said. "It wasnt exactly a full wedge shot, but it was one that I could be aggressive with -- 58 yards, trying to hit it about 52, 53, and we saw what it did." The ball took three bounces, the last one just beyond the hole, and it stopped and spun back a few inches into the cup. "A little too dramatic for me," said Johnson, who closed with a 4-under 68. In the playoff, Woods blinked first with a smooth 7-iron that tailed off to the right and into the same bunker, this lie even tougher. Johnson hit the green and two-putted for par, and while Woods hit another great shot out of the sand, his par putt to extend the playoff spun out of the left side of the cup. "Zach, I dont know how the last three iron shots didnt go in the hole," Woods said after his closing 70. "Pretty impressive what he did. He got me." Johnson and Woods finished at 13-under 275, four shots clear of Matt Kuchar (67) and Bubba Watson (70). It was only the fourth time in his career that Woods failed to win when he had at least a two-shot lead going into the final round, and the second time at Sherwood. Graeme McDowell made up a four-shot deficit in the 2010 World Challenge and beat Woods in a playoff. The World Challenge was held at Sherwood for the 14th and final time. It moves next year to Isleworth in Florida. The attendance Sunday was 24,922, a record for any round in 14 years at Sherwood. Traffic outside the tony club in the Santa Monica foothills looked like an LA freeway in what could be the last chance in the near future to see Woods in southern California. The stage was set for the proper sendoff. It turned out to be redemption for Johnson. Two years ago, he was poised to win the World Challenge until Woods made birdie on the last two holes for a one-shot victory, the first for Woods in more than two years dating to the crisis in his personal life. That sent him on his way to three wins in 2012, and five more this year that restored Woods to No. 1 in the world. That made the win for Johnson -- his second this year, 11th of his career -- that much sweeter, even if the ending was awkward. "I went head-to-head against the best," Johnson said. "Young guys ... hes their idol. Hes their Jack Nicklaus. Hes the guy that paved the way. Hes the one that keeps pushing the ceiling higher and higher and hes the one that keeps raising the bar. If he stays healthy -- hopefully, he does -- theres no telling what he can do. "So yeah, Ill take pride in the fact that I played against the best, and I got one," he said. "I mean, hes gotten a lot more than I have. So hopefully, Im in that position again and I think Ill learn from today." Woods hit two splendid bunker shots on the 18th hole -- in regulation and the playoff -- but was let down by his putter. He was blocking putts for most of Sunday, and made sure he didnt make that mistake on the 5-footer for par to extend the playoff, a putt that broke sharply to the right. This one caught the left lip and spun out. It was not the way he wanted to leave Sherwood, where Woods has five wins and now five runner-up finishes. The only consolation was $400,000 for finishing second, bringing to just over $14 million the earnings he has donated to his foundation from the three tournaments (AT&T National, Deutsche Bank, World Challenge) that support his education programs. wholesale jerseys . MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Noel Prefontaine cant see himself going out like this. The Toronto Argonauts veteran kicker/punter, a six-time CFL all-star and a Grey Cup champion, will undergo surgery shortly to repair a four-centimetre labrum tear in his left hip. He has an anticipated recovery time of four-to-six months, but Prefontaine said Tuesday there are no guarantees that at age 38 hell be able to resume his career. And if thats the case, Prefontaines last-ever play in the CFL will be watching Hamiltons Chris Williams return a missed Prefontaine field goal 119 yards for a TD in the first half of the Tiger-Cats 36-27 home win over Toronto on Saturday. "I could have very well played my last game in Hamilton," Prefontaine said. "As an Argonaut you dont want to end your career in Hamilton so I think that will give me an extra little push when rehab time comes around. "Obviously, I have one glimmer of hope and its getting it fixed and (well see) what happens after that. Anyone who has ever been through any surgery knows it is not a guarantee. I am not going to feel like a new person when I come out of this thing but the bottom line is the injury is going to be fixed and then I will just take it from there." The five-foot-11, 205-pound Prefontaine, an Argos team captain, said he has played through the ailment the last couple of years -- first suffering the injury while with Edmonton -- but now the condition is dramatically affecting his kicking mechanics. "Every kick I have feels different and as a kicker thats a bad place to be," he said. "Its not going to promote any kind of consistency and I think going through the first three games and evaluating what Ive done I think I can honestly say it has been very inconsistent. "This team cannot afford to have inconsistency at that position and I feel with my injury and how Im feeling right now I cant fulfil my responsibility to help this team win." The left-footed Prefontaine is currently the CFLs scoring leader through three weeks with 37 points. But he has connected on just 10-of-15 field goals and has watched opposing returners take back missed attempts for touchdowns in each of Torontos last two games. "Its not so much pain every time I hit it," he said. "I get burning a burning sensation in my lower back on my left side and my hip flexor region. "This is something that needs to be surgically repaired, its not something thats going to heal on its own." Toronto signed free-agent Swayze Waters to replace Prefontaine, who was placed on the nine-game injured list Monday. Waters will handle kicking and punting duties Wednesday night when the Argos (1-2) host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-3) at Rogers Centre. Prefontaine joined the Argos as an unheralded punter in 1998 out of San Diego State, deemed a non-import despite being born in California because he lived with his grandmother while growing up in Quebec. His thundering boots and penchant for racing downfield to make bone-crunching tackles quickly made him a fan favourite. Prefontaine began kicking field goals in 2002 and has made 332 of 457 career attempts, a 72.6 per cent success ratio. Prefontaine is also among the CFLs top punters with a solid 45.9-yard career average and helped Toronto win the 04 Grey Cup. Prefontaine spent his first 10 CFL seasons in Toronto before being dealt to Edmonton on May 31, 2008 for a 2009 first-round pick and conditional 2010 selection after former NFL star kicker Mike Vanderjagt, a native of Oakville, Ont., rejoined the Argos. The Double Blue re-acquired Prefontaine on Oct. 12, 2010 for defensive lineman Etienne Legare and the negotiation rights to defensive back Damaso Munoz. Prefontaine said an MRI in March revealed the full extent of the injury, and because the project recovery time would mean returning at mid-season, he opted to continue playing through it this year, then have the surgery at seasons end. "Hindsight is 50-50, if I knew I was going to struggle on the field then I think its something I probably wouldve contemplated," he said. "But the bottom line is I felt I had been dealing with it for a while and told the people involved I had been playing on this thing and felt I could continue to do so. "When you kick a field goal youre supposed to be over the ball and be able to drive it so your legswing would normally come down. I cant swing down on it right now so the clips Ive seen of me kicking field goals, my leg is coming up at impact which is the worst thing I could possibly do. But its coming up because Im compensating due to my hip. "I dont have enough strength in there, the tear is bothering me to the point where I cant mechanically be consistent therefore its affecting my overall results." Although he wont be kicking any time soon, Prefontaine says hell certainly remain visible with the Argos. "My role now is going to be the same other than playing," he said. "As a leader and a voted captain on this team and as much as I care for these guys, Im going to be here any way that I can to help them win a Grey Cup. The Hurricanes capped their first 10-win month since 2009 by beating the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Friday night. Jeff Skinner scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, Alexander Semin added an empty-netter with 1:04 left and Nathan Gerbe scored on an early power play. Opening a four-game homestand that precedes the Olympic break, Carolina earned its fifth win in six games while staying in the mix in the crowded Metropolitan Division. "We want to have a good feeling going into the break and we want to sort of build off this win," Skinner said. David Backes scored on the power play for St. Louis. The Blues, who average 3.36 goals per game, missed a chance to pull even with Chicago atop the Central Division by losing just their fourth game against an Eastern Conference team. "Hard to find a lot of good players in our game today," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said. "They deserve a lot of credit. They skated. They checked. They played hard. And we looked like we had the body language like we wanted an easier game. Didnt get it." Anton Khudobin stopped 26 shots for the Hurricanes. Jaroslav Halak made 28 saves in his fourth straight start, but had his four-game winning streak snapped. Khudobin stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period, including a nifty leg save on Alex Pietrangelo with about 1 1/2 minutes left. And, he got some help from the goal post after two Blues -- Jaden Schwartz and Jay Bouwmeester -- each rang it in the final 2 minutes. "You need the post to be a goalies best friend," Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. Semin then tacked on his highlight-reel empty-net goal that capped the Hurricanes best month in a while. They went 10-4 in January, and their previous 10-win month in March 2009 led into their only playoff apppearance since 2006, when they won their only Stanley Cup.dddddddddddd Skinner put Carolina up 2-1 off a draw 1:51 into the second. After Jordan Staal won a faceoff, the puck found Skinners stick and he beat Halak with a wrist shot from the slot that clipped the goalies glove for his seventh goal of the month. "Didnt really mean to bank it off his glove and in," Skinner said. "You just try and get it to the net sometimes." That turned out to be enough support for Khudobin, who earned the decision in every game this month for Carolina. He helped the Hurricanes leapfrog idle Columbus and Philadelphia in the division standings, with 59 points. When the night started, only 11 points separated second place from the cellar in the Metropolitan. The Hurricanes never trailed on Friday, taking advantage of some sloppy play early by the Blues -- who were whistled for three penalties in the opening 11:25. Carolina went up 1-0 when Gerbe one-timed a slick cross-ice pass from Andrej Sekera 3:46 in. "The puck had moved, and there was an opening there and he found a soft area," Sekera said. "He was wide open, so I just tried to get it to him, and he did a pretty good job." The Blues, who have the leagues second-best power-play unit, tied it at 9:23 when Backes beat Khudobin high for his 150th career goal with St. Louis but just his second since Dec. 14. "Its nice to be back on the scoreboard but were more interested in winning," Backes said. "Tonight was a game where they brought a hard-skating, tough-checking game, and we didnt have a ton of answers for it." NOTES: St. Louis finished the month 9-5-0. ... The Blues entered with 37 points on the road, the second-best total in the league, but have not won in Raleigh since 2009. ... TOKYO -- Fourth-seeded Mardy Fish of the United States defeated fellow American Ryan Harrison 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in their first-round match at the Japan Open on Monday. Fish relied on his serve and volley game to outlast his compatriot in a battle that took two hours 44 minutes at Ariake Colosseum. Harrison put up a valiant fight, displaying a blistering forehand throughout the match, but leading 5-4 in the final set he saw Fish win his service game to level, then was broken in the next game. Fish closed out the match on serve with a forehand winner after Harrison had staved off two match points. Fish prevailed despite committing a high number of unforced errors in the contest. "It was a close match," Fish said. "It could have gone either way. He played well." Fish was impressed by his 19-year-old opponent, who had to qualify for the main draw. A prayer that hes coming? A plea that he stays away? Groves intentions with his gesture werent clear. Like just about everything around Johnny Football, theres no definite answer. The most polarizing player to enter the NFL in a while, Manziel, is being closely linked to the Browns, who own the No. 4 overall pick in next weeks draft and have been seeking a franchise quarterback for more than a decade. Clevelands inability to land a QB either in the draft or via free agency or blind luck may be the single biggest reason the Browns have only made the playoffs once since 1999 and seem to change coaches every year. There are those who believe Manziel can save the Browns. Others feel the Texas A&M quarterbacks dazzling skills -- and size -- wont translate to the pro game. Hes dynamic. Hes too small. Hes a game-changer. Hes self-absorbed. Hes a hard worker. Hes a head case. Hes charismatic. Everyone has an opinion on Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner who has been projected as being picked anywhere from the top 5 to the bottom of the first round. "If Johnny Manziel came through, if he beats out the other quarterbacks that are here, its all good," Browns Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden said. "I like Johnny Manziel. I like him a whole lot." Hadens not alone. Sports radio talk shows here are crammed with callers screaming for the Browns to choose Manziel, one of several QBs in this years class expected to go in the early rounds. Cleveland hasnt used a pick higher than No. 22 on a quarterback since taking Tim Couch first overall 15 years ago. The Browns have done their homework on Manziel. The team recently worked him out privately in College Station, Texas, and brought him to Cleveland to visit their training facility and headquarters. As they consider taking him, Browns general manager Ray Farmer and owner Jimmy Haslam wanted to get to better know Manziel, who served a suspension last season for violating an NCAA rule involving signing autographs, as a person. Theyve seen him on film. Nothing beats the real thing. "I dont think I have any reservations with who Johnny is," Farmer said. "Hes a good young man. I think the interesting part about Johnny is that, much like a lot of us, you dont get a handbook for how to operate in certain instances.dddddddddddd "When you go from being a kid from Tyler, Texas, to being Johnny Football and winning the Heisman Trophy really quickly, they dont hand you a manual and tell you how to handle the media swarm, how to handle the paparazzi, how to handle people coming up to you at dinners. "He would tell you very candidly that its probably not how he would have written it up now that hes at the end of it or getting towards the end of his college career, but you live and you learn." Manziel would certainly put Cleveland back on the football map and revitalize a flagging franchise. Hed sell tickets and move merchandise. But is that enough? Groves called one of his college coaches now at Texas A&M for a scouting report. "I asked him, How is Johnny? Is he a football guy?" Groves said. "He said, Honestly, hes the most competitive guy youll ever meet. He is a guy that will come in, be the first in, last to leave. thats just him. I know you have the flashy lifestyle (Groves mimics Manziels signature finger rub), (rapper) Drake and all that stuff, and at the end of the day the guy wins ballgames. "He makes plays. He extends drives and wins ballgames." Browns offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan, who coached quarterback Robert Griffin III in Washington, thinks Manziels unorthodox style can win in the pros. "If you can make those plays in college, you can do it in the NFL," he said. "The one thing about the NFL, theres a lot of tape out there. Youve got to be able to do everything. "Whatever you do very good, theyre going to eventually be able to shut that down and youre going to have to do something else. Hes going to be able to make plays in this league. Eventually when they try to contain him, hes going to have to do everything he didnt always have to do in college." The Browns must also consider all that comes along with Manziel. Number 2 brings a three-ring circus. Groves, for one, believes the Browns are suited to add Manziel. "Were a mature enough team to handle it," he said. "Weve had some individual success here and people have handled it well. Josh Gordon and (Alex) Mack going to the Pro Bowl, Joe Thomas going to the Pro Bowl. Joe Haden and Jordan Cameron making their first Pro Bowls, things like that. I think we can handle it." ' ' '

The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly signed former Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker Henoc Muamba. Doug Kyed of the New England Sports Network (NESN) tweeted on Thursday night that the deal was complete. The news comes one day after Muamba was released by the Blue Bombers in order to pursue an NFL deal. He had been eligible for CFL free agency beginning next Tuesday. Muamba worked out for the Colts, Patriots, and Vikings back in December. He was drafted by Winnipeg first overall in the 2011 CFL Draft. While the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champions didnt lose in regulation at home during the regular season, things didnt go as well in the Presidents Cup final.LOS ANGELES -- Chris Pauls teammates figure he might need more time to fully recover from his role in one of the ugliest playoff collapses in NBA history. With the Los Angeles Clippers season riding on Game 6, Paul knows he doesnt have that luxury. The Oklahoma City Thunder are back at Staples Center on Thursday night, and the Clippers must shelve their memories of the mistakes late in Game 5 that cost them a chance to close out the series at home. Blake Griffin and Jamal Crawford went to work on Pauls mind on the bus ride to their flight home from Oklahoma City after the Clippers blew a 13-point lead in just over four minutes. The fiasco culminated in the All-Star point guards touch foul on Russell Westbrook to set up the winning free throws, sandwiched between two brutal turnovers by Paul -- all in the final 14 seconds. "He was visibly upset, and I told him that game is not on one guy," Griffin said Wednesday at the Clippers training complex. "Its not on him. We made plenty of mistakes down the stretch, plenty of mistakes throughout the game that could ultimately change the outcome. That idea that the game is on him, you understand what hes saying, but its not on him by any means. We still have two games left to play." The Clippers roller coaster of a post-season has careened into another valley after the Thunder stormed back from near-certain defeat with the help of Pauls mistakes and a much-debated out-of-bounds call with 11.3 seconds left. Clippers coach Doc Rivers hadnt changed his opinion one day after declaring the Clippers "were robbed" on that call, although he said he wont file any formal protest. The NBA issued a statement Wednesday night saying the call was made correctly in the absence of clear evidence to change it on replay review. Paul still appeared glum, giving short, clipped answers to questions about his turnovers and the Clippers ability to bounce back in Game 6. "I woke up this morning with a beautiful wife and two beautiful kids," Paul said. "At the end of the day, it is basketball, but theres a lot of guys livelihoods who depend on it, so Ive got to do my part." After three weeks of a circus atmosphere around the Clippers, Rivers stilll believes his young team has gathered enough resilience to force the series back to Oklahoma City for a deciding game.dddddddddddd The Clippers played 43 outstanding minutes in Game 5 to reach the brink of what could have been a benchmark victory in a shift of the Western Conference hierarchy, only to let it slip away. Rivers thinks its a lesson the Clippers needed. "You dont win it easy," Rivers said. "Were trying to do something special here and be something special. And if youre trying to stand out in any job, its going to be hard. Youre going to face adversity, and youve just got to accept that thats part of the process. Yeah, this is hard. Its supposed to be. And thats the only thing I told our guys. Whats going on right now is exactly what should happen to win. You have to go through stuff to win, and youve just got to deal with it." The Thunder travelled to the West Coast on Wednesday with a bit of house money after the comeback by Westbrook and Kevin Durant, who combined for 17 of Oklahoma Citys 19 points in the final 9 1/2 minutes while Los Angeles fumbled, stumbled and finally crashed. Oklahoma City could advance to its third Western Conference final in four years with a victory in Game 6. But the Thunder also recall their own collapse in Game 4 at Staples Center, where they blew a 16-point lead with nine minutes left last weekend. Game 5 told coach Scott Brooks plenty about his teams tenacity. "I like the fact that we did that after the game before," Brooks said. "We had a lot of opportunities to win that game." Neither team has been significantly better in this series: Los Angeles has cumulatively outscored the Thunder 540-539 through five games, with Oklahoma Citys two-man offensive game countering the Clippers more balanced attack. But even after the exhaustion of a seven-game first-round series with Golden State and the continuing drama surrounding owner Donald Sterlings lifetime ban, the Clippers leaders think theyve still got more fight. "I think weve done a pretty good job this season and in the post-season of putting things in the past and just moving forward," said Griffin, who leads the Clippers with 24.2 points per game in the series. CALGARY -- Its rare to see a penalty shot in the National Lacrosse League, let alone in a playoff game. So when the Calgary Roughnecks were awarded a penalty shot down by a goal with less than a minute remaining in Game 1 of the NLL West final against the Edmonton Rush, they took full advantage of the opportunity. Curtis Dickson tied the game for Calgary with 22 seconds left on the clock, and Jeff Shattlers goal 46 seconds into overtime gave the Roughnecks the thrilling 12-11 victory. "Thats probably only the second or third (penalty shot) that Ive seen since Ive been in the league," said Dickson, who added that although it was a "nerve-wracking" experience, he felt confident making the play. "Ive been in this situation before. We need a goal late to tie it up or get the win. I just did what I know how to do. I saw my spot, took a shot at the opening, and lucky enough it went in." Leading 11-10, Edmonton had the ball in the Calgary end, and the Roughnecks had an empty net after pulling their goalie earlier. But with the play along the boards by the benches, the Rush were assessed a rarely called illegal substitution penalty. "I guess we had too many and its the last two minutes so its a penalty shot, which is fine. I dont have a problem with that except for the fact they had about nine guys on the floor too," said Edmonton coach Derek Keenan. "If theyre going to call it on us, they should have called it on them too, or not call it. It was ridiculous." Shattler, who had two goals on the night, was equally amazed. "That call that they made was pretty gutsy," he said. "Too many men with 22 seconds left. I dont know many refs that would make that call." Shattler showed off his athleticism on the winning goal. After his original shot missed the net, the ball bounced high in the air off the end boards. Shattler, who saw it the whole way, raced after it, leaped high in the air and in one motion flung the ball into the top corner past Edmonton goaltender Aaron Bold. "When I looked at Boldie, he was still looking the other way so I thought if I get up there fast enough, Ive got a chance," said Shattler. "I shot it before I even looked at the net." He didnt have to look to know it went in as a deafening roar erupted from the Scotiabank Saddledome crowd of 13,618. "Tonight was an amazing experience, it was unreal," said Shattler. Greg Harnett, Shawn Evans, Karsen Leung, Daryl Veltman, Dane Dobbie and Scott Ranger also scored for Calgary. Edmontons offence was led by Mark Matthew, who scored three goals. Robert Church and Zack Greer each had a pair, while John Lintz, Curtis Knight, Riley Loewen and Nik Bilic added singles. The two teams will play Game 2 of the West final next Friday in Edmonton. Should the Rush win that game, a 10-minute mini game will immediately follow to decide who will advance, with sudden death overtime if still tied after that. "If we play as well as we did tonight with a couple little adjustments, well have a good opportunity next week for sure. We have to worry about that first one and then go from there with that quirky 10-minute deal," said Keenan. "When push comes to shove, you cant lose those one-goal games like that being up 5-1 and not putting the foot on the pedal," said Matthews. "We didnt do that and they came out with a lot of energy in the second half and beat us." After giving up the games first goal, Edmonton scored the next five and were cruising along nicely early in the second quarter when they were held to one goal on a five-minute power play. Calgary scored three straight right after that and the game was close the rest of the way. Edmonton led 7-5 at half-time and Calgary was up 9-8 after three quarters. "I thought we played well enough to win the game, to be honest," said Keenan. "I thought we played a real good game right from the start to finish. In all areas of our game I thought we were good and it came down to a couple of breaks that they got and they got the win. It was a tough one." Notes: Edmonton won three of the four meetings during the regular season ... Calgary was without veteran Geoff Snider (lower body), injured last weekend. Snider is also the Roughnecks main face-off specialist. Garrett McIntosh took most of the draws after only taking six face-offs all season ... Edmonton won the two previous playoff meetings between the provincial rivals, both wins (2010, 2012) were upsets in Calgary. wholesale nfl jerseys .45-million entry-level contract. TORONTO -- Veteran forward Jay Pandolfo, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the New Jersey Devils, announced his retirement Thursday. Pandolfo, a native of Burlington, Mass., spent 15 seasons in the NHL, registering 100 goals and 126 assists in 899 career games with New Jersey, Boston and the New York Islanders. The 39-year-old also accumulated 11 goals and 22 assists in 131 career playoff games. The team made the announcement Tuesday. The sides had an agreement last week pending a physical. The 38-year-old Colon, a former As nemesis during his four-year stint with the AL West rival Angels from 2004-07, went 8-10 with a 4.00 ERA in 29 appearances and 26 starts last year for the New York Yankees in his 14th big league season. He won the 2005 AL Cy Young Award. Last month, the As traded away starter Trevor Cahill to Arizona and All-Star lefty Gio Gonzalez to the Nationals. Oakland also sent All-Star closer Andrew Bailey to the Red Sox on Dec. 28. On Jan. 16, the As acquired outfielder Seth Smith from Colorado in a swap that sent right-hander Guillermo Moscoso and left-hander Josh Outman to the Rockies. They were two other potential starters. "We thought it was important to find another veteran starting pitcher who could give the group of younger arms a little breathing room as a number of them work toward making their first opening day rotation in the big leagues," assistant general manager David Forst said. When healthy, the hard-throwing Colon has been impressive at Oakland Coliseum where he will now pitch regularly.dddddddddddd He is 5-1 with a 2.14 ERA and an opposing batting average of .179 in seven appearances in the As aging ballpark. Oakland general manager Billy Beane is in a rebuilding mode with hopes that Commissioner Bud Selig will rule the franchise can relocate some 40 miles south to San Jose and build a new ballpark. But the San Francisco Giants hold the territorial rights to technology-rich Silicon Valley. Selig said at last weeks owners meetings a resolution "is very much on the front burner." He appointed a committee in March 2009 to study the situation. Colon will join a rotation featuring Brett Anderson and Brandon McCarthy. Left-hander Dallas Braden, who pitched a perfect game on May 9, 2010, against Tampa Bay, is recovering from surgery on his pitching shoulder and its unclear when he will be ready in 2012. Braden received a $3.35 million, one-year contract in mid-December. He made three starts last season before being sidelined by a shoulder injury. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA before going on the disabled list April 18. He had surgery to a repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder May 17. The As havent been to the playoffs or posted a winning record since being swept by the Tigers in the 2006 AL championship series. ' ' '

Yes, they have some big ticket free agents to deal with but ones they should be able to retain. After a bit of a slow start at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the United States is right up there in the overall medal standings. Seven days into the competition, the U.S. began the day with four gold, two silver and six bronze medals. They are ranked fifth and have the second largest total amount of medals (12) behind Norway. Team USA has produced medals in alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, figure skating, luge and snowboarding. The glaring omission: long track speed skating. Coming into these Games, the U.S. was third in the all-time long track speed skating standings with 67 total medals and they lead in overall gold with 29. Its been 30 years since the U.S. didnt win at least one speed skating medal at the Olympics. In Sochi, Americans Brittany Bowe and Heather Richardson were the undisputed gold medal favourites in the womens 1,000 meters. Between the two, they won every World Cup race this season but in Russia they finished seventh and eighth. Shani Davis was expected to complete his historic three-peat in the 1000m and yet he finished eighth. No American has finished better than seventh place so far. In a sport where races are decided by hundredths of a second, the talk in Sochi has been about the new Under Armour suits U.S. skaters are wearing. Developed in secrecy in corporation with Lockheed Martin, the Mach 39 as it is known even looks uncomfortable to the untrained eye.dddddddddddd A ventilation panel on the back is possibly to blame for taking in air, which hinders skaters from achieving the deep squatted stands required to deliver the ultimate stride. Then there is the U.S. training facility. American skaters have been preparing for Sochi in a building that hosts the fastest ice on the planet in Salt Lake City. The oval is on altitude which ensures fast conditions. However, the Adler Arena in Sochi is on sea level and its properties are completely different. The ice is considered slow where skaters need to rely less on technique and finesse and more on stamina and sheer determination. Team Canada trains on altitude in Calgary and perhaps it is not a coincidence that Denny Morrisons memorable silver moment is the only Canadian medal in Sochi so far. Time is running out for the U.S. long track team - and for Canadas - with only six medal events left at these Games. Both countries have slim medal hopes in the mens 10,000m and the womens 5,000m. The 1,500m - often considered the crown jewel of long track - is wide open but other than that, medaling at the team pursuit is needed to prevent historic lows. ' ' '
