MONTREAL -- It wasnt pretty or convincing, but it was a win and the Montreal Impact will take it. Noel Acciari Jersey . Felipe Martins scored in the 15th minute and the Impact held on for a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union on a rainy Saturday afternoon for their first win of the Major League Soccer season. It was the Impacts (1-4-3) first victory in 10 league games since a 2-1 triumph over Philadelphia on Oct. 19 last season and their first clean sheet since a 5-0 thumping of Houston last Aug. 24. "We did a great job of fighting for every ball," said Felipe, who got his team-leading second goal of the season. "But the most important thing was the three points. "We waited for this a long time and its very nice to be back with a win." The Union (1-3-5) are winless in their last seven games and havent scored in their last two. It was Montreals first home game on the grass field at Saputo Stadium -- after playing three times indoors at Olympic Stadium -- but the stands were only half full in chilly, wet weather, although attendance was listed at 19,075. Felipe scored when Patrice Bernier stole the ball from Sheanon Williams and took a long shot that Zac MacMath blocked, only to fall to the Brazilian who banged in the rebound. The Impact and goalkeeper Troy Perkins spent the next 75 minutes holding off the Union, who outshot them 17-7 and wasted some glittering chances. "We have to grow and improve because we didnt play a good game for 90 minutes," said centreback Matteo Ferrari. "Some parts were good. "But it was very important to get the three points. For us, it wasnt a moment to play well but it was a moment to get points." It was the first meeting between the teams since the Impact sent Andrew Wenger to the Union for Jack McInerney in a swap of strikers three weeks ago. Wenger was dangerous all afternoon, taking four shots, including two on goal. He missed the net by a long margin in the 22nd minute, but five minutes later forced Perkins to stretch out a hand to save a shot from the edge of the penalty area. "The whole teams been dangerous lately but we havent been able to put the ball in the back of the net," said Wenger, who has one goal in four games since the trade. "Thats whats frustrating. "We knew they were dangerous on counterattack, like they were today, but we had the better of the play going forward. We couldnt translate that into goals and thats something me and some other guys have to figure out." McInerney had a glittering chance in the 54th, but MacMath dove to get a hand on the shot. The striker known as Jack Mac said it was fun to play his former teammates. "Whenever Id walk by someone there would always be a little comment made, but at the end, it was business," he said. "Every tackle had a little something extra in it." It was also a first Impact win for former Chicago Fire coach Frank Klopas, who replaced the fired Marco Schallibaum in December. There had been grumbling among fans and the media that Klopas and sporting director Nick De Santis should be let go if the teams record winless run to start a season continued, although De Santis met with the media during the week to give his third coach in as many MLS seasons a vote of confidence. The discontent showed when their staunchest supporters who cluster behind the west goal held up banners that read: "3 years, 3 coaches, 1 De Santis." "It felt really good," Klopas said of the win. "Some games are not going to be pretty soccer and you have to find ways to compete. "It gives us confidence. You can do things in training, but its important to get results. You have more enthusiasm." The Impact would probably wish to play again as soon as possible, but they are entering a bye week and dont play again until May 7 when they face either Ottawa or Edmonton in a Voyageurs Cup semifinal. Their next league game is at home May 10 against Kansas City. The Impact are 4-1-2 against Philadelphia in two-plus seasons in MLS, including 4-0-0 in Montreal. Fullback Hassoun Camara was shown the yellow card for clotheslining Fabinho in the 37th minute. It was his fifth caution of the season and he will be suspended for Montreals next MLS game. The Union play next week at Seattle. Notes: Fullbacks Camara and Jeb Brovsky were back in the starting 11 for Montreal as Eric Miller and Maxim Tissot saw action as substitutes. Calum Mallace, who started last week, was back on the bench as McInerney started. . . Conor Casey and Crisitian Maidana were on the bench for Philadelphia while Fabinho started. Kevan Miller Jersey . The South Africa international, who rejoined the club last month on loan from Tottenham, opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a powerful shot into the roof of the net. Jimmy Hayes Jersey . Power had a two-lap average of 218.896 mph in qualifying Friday at the high-banked, high-speed 1 1/2-mile track for his 34th career pole. http://www.thebostonbruinshockey.com/torey-krug-hockey-jersey/ . LOUIS -- Joe Thornton and the San Jose Sharks won the matchup of unbeaten teams.Maybe it’s because he’s not a very likeable guy, but Nick Saban hasn’t gotten the credit he deserves. He’s the best college football coach ever. There aren’t a ton of fans and experts out there making the case for him, what with the stories of his abrasive attitude (especially towards the media) and rumours of his shady dealings. And he had that failed stint in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins. Even Crimson Tide supporters won’t fight for him like they should, instead opting for the more warmly remembered Bear Bryant as best ever. But Saban has developed the best college football program in the world and is on his way to likely surpassing Bryant’s record six national championships. Since returning to college football with Alabama in 2007, the Crimson Tide have won three national championships and finished the year ranked in the Top 10 six times. That 2007 season, a year Saban was still implementing his system and recruiting his own players, is the only losing campaign the 63-year-old has ever overseen in his nearly 20 years as a college football head coach. Saban also led Toledo, Michigan State, and LSU to extreme success before his time in Tuscaloosa. He has all but guaranteed Alabama is a title contender every year. Which brings us to this year’s title contending team. Gone are the team’s stars of past years like AJ McCarron, Trent Richardson, CJ Mosley, and Dee Milliner, now scattered around the NFL; replaced by current stars that will find their way into the NFL via the early rounds of upcoming drafts. Perhaps the biggest star on this year’s edition is receiver Amari Cooper, the player with perhaps the most to gain from a strong Sugar Bowl and, hopefully, CFP National Championship Game. Cooper finished third in Heisman voting after leading the nation in receiving yards with 1,656. His 115 receptions were also first in the NCAA while his 14 touchdowns ranked him second among receivers. Cooper was spectacular all season, but his breakout performance came on rivalry weekend in the Iron Bowl, when the junior amassed 13 receptions for 224 yards and three touchdowns. While draftniks knew Cooper was for real long ago, the Miami native’s draft watch officially launched with an Adam Schefter tweet that suggested Cooper would be an ideal fit for the Oakland Raiders, who were in position to pick first overall at the time. Cooper’s draft stock is currently wavering in the Top 10. He has a strong head start to be the first receiver off the board come late April, but a strong Playoff showing could push the junior into the Top 5. With McCarron now a Cincinnati Bengal and inheritor Blake SSims having an inconsistent year at quarterback, the Crimson Tide have had to look elsewhere for offensive leaders. Ryan Spooner Jersey. . And along with Cooper, running back TJ Yeldon stepped up for ‘Bama this year. While he finished far from the finalists like his WR teammate, Yeldon spent some time on many a pundit’s Heisman Watch this season on route to finishing with more than 1,000 combined yards and 11 touchdowns despite missing a stat padder against Western Carolina late in the season. Yeldon is one of the top draft eligible backs this season and projects to be selected late in the second round or early in the third. And, like always, Alabama once again possesses a (future) star-studded defence. Safety Landon Collins doesn’t get the publicity of a Cooper or even a Yeldon, but it’s possible the junior could hear his name called before both his teammates in April’s NFL draft. Collins finished with 87 tackles and three interceptions and is widely considered to be the top draft eligible safety and a possible Top 10 pick. The Crimson Tide entered the season at the top of the rankings alongside Florida State and Oregon but after opening their conference schedule with a win over Florida, fell to Ole Miss during the State of Mississippi Run in early October. It took the rest of the season to climb their way back to No. 1 in the rankings, defeating ranked teams Texas A&M, LSU, and Auburn while also ultimately ending the State of Mississippi Run by beating the then No. 1 Mississippi State Bulldogs in mid-November. Alabama cemented their spot in the first ever College Football Playoff with an anti-climactic win over Missouri to claim their second SEC title in three years. Alabama will bring both a Top 20 offence and defence into the Sugar Bowl. The Tide were ranked eighth in yards gained on offence and averaged the 18th most points in the nation. They’re strong both on the ground and through the air, averaging more than 200 rushing yards and nearly 300 passing yards per game. The Tide’s defence is especially stingy against the run, ranking behind only Penn State and rushing yards against at 88.7 per game. Their pass defence is middle of the pack but Alabama finished the year ranked 11th in the NCAA, giving up only 312 yards per game. And if you believe in “bend don’t break” defences, you’ll like that Alabama is ranked fourth in the nation giving up only 16.4 points per game. The Tide enter the game as nine-point favourites and if they play a clean game – kind of a Saban staple – college football’s best coach ever will be playing for his fifth national championship 11 days later.
