Winnipeg Goldeyes shortstop Tyler Kuhn led off Friday nights game at Shaw Park with a solo home run and then finished it in the ninth with another solo homer. http://www.mexiconationalshop.com/ . But that was the beginning and the end of it. The Winnipeg Goldeyes didnt score another run. Friday night, Gary Southshore RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock held the Goldeyes to one run on seven hits through the first six innings and then the bullpen gave up only one more the rest of the way as Gary invaded Shaw Park and beat the Fish 3-2. It was Winnipegs fourth straight loss and during those four games, the Goldeyes have managed only five runs. Total. Winnipeg is now 34-18 on the season and remain in first place in the American Associations North Division, 5 1/2 games ahead of second-place St. Paul. “We just need to focus a little harder in those situations with runners in scoring position,” said Kuhn, who went three-for-five with two runs scored and two driven in. “And Im at fault, too. I had the bases loaded with one out in the second inning and just didnt get the job done. I didnt drive in a run when I should have. “But we have a good offense. Our defense and pitching is still strong. And this is baseball. You can lose four in a row and turn around and win five in a row. Its all about hard work. Thats baseball. Come back to the park tomorrow, get our work done and turn this thing around.” After Kuhn opened the scoring with that solo shot in the first, Craig Maddox answered for Gary with a solo bomb of his own off Goldeyes starter Chandler Barnard in the second. Later in the inning, Drew Muren knocked in his first of two runs on the evening with a sacrifice fly and Gary had a 2-1 lead that they did not relinquish. In the fourth, Muren singled home a run to make it 3-1 and then Kuhn hit his second solo shot of the game and his third home run of the year in the bottom of the ninth to make it 3-2. Gary finished with three runs on nine hits, while the Goldeyes -- who had runners in scoring position in the first, second, fifth, seventh and eighth, but couldnt bring them home -- finished with two runs on 10 hits. Winnipeg left 10 men on base. Hiscock (6-4, 3.92 ERA) got the win for the Explorers, while Bernard (3-1, 3.65 ERA) suffered the loss. Former Goldeyes right-hander Barry Fowler got the save for Gary. The Goldeyes and RailCats will play Game 2 of this three-game series on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Shaw Park. Ethan Hollingsworth (3-0, 2.84 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Stephen Bougher (4-3, 4.08 ERA) will take to the hill for Gary. http://www.mexiconationalshop.com/Javier-Hernandez-Copa-America-Jersey/ . Nylander scored in his NHL pre-season debut as the Leafs beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 Tuesday night at Air Canada Centre and showed flashes of offensive brilliance. http://www.mexiconationalshop.com/Candido-Ramirez-Copa-America-Jersey/ . Captain Brian Gionta, who was handed the Jacques Beauchamp trophy as the teams unsung hero before the game, scored on a penalty shot 2:04 into overtime to give the Canadiens a 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday night. http://www.mexiconationalshop.com/Eduardo-Herrera-Copa-America-Jersey/ .J. -- The New Jersey Devils struggled to slow down David Desharnais on Wednesday.Steve Yzerman and Hockey Canada are getting a little bit of everything with the eight defenceman named to represent Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The eight defencemen named – Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Dan Hamhuis, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, P.K. Subban, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Shea Weber – bring a blend of offence, defence, mobility, responsibility and physicality. For Canada, that responsibility may well start at the top with returnees Keith, Weber and Doughty. "To me they have everything you want in a defence pairing," TSN director of scouting Craig Button said of the potential top pairing of Keith and Weber. "They can skate, they can move the puck up the ice or they can join in the attack. They can play against the other teams best players and theyre going to play a lot of minutes." "Mike Babcock will have no hesitance to put those two out there against anybody at any time," Button added. While some of the players selected were academic, especially returnees Doughty, Keith and Weber, others such as P.K. Subban and Dan Hamhuis were believed to be bubble players until the day the roster was unveiled. Representing the oldest membeer of the defence corps and one of the youngest are both new additions to Canadas Olympic squad as 24-year-old Subban and 31-year-old Hamhuis will both be expected to fill Canadas niche needs. http://www.mexiconationalshop.com/Jorge-Torres-Nilo-Copa-America-Jersey/. "The bottom pair is exactly what we thought it would be," said NHL on TSN analyst Mike Johnson. "Subban is there for an infusion of offence, a change of pace on special teams and Dan Hamhuis is there for the other end: defence, shot-blocking and penalty-killing depending on the situation." The defence is a perfect balance of right-handed and left-handed shots, which was a conscious effort by Canadas management. That balance may have played in Vlasics favour as he edged teammate and 2010 Canadian Olympian Dan Boyle out of one of the coveted blue line spots. Button praised Vlasics inclusion on the team, complimenting the 26-year-olds composure. "Hes steady, hes consistent and he plays at a high level," Button said. "Its not just skating and competing, his mind is very, very strong. Mistakes are going to be at a minimum in this type of tournament so you want a guy thats comfortable playing in those big minutes and those important times and hes not going to make mistakes."
