"I thought we kept it simple and kind of slowly frustrated them as it went on and it was a win we needed," Staal said. Chris Kunitz scored his 35th goal to give Pittsburgh an early lead, but the Penguins crumbled over the final two periods. Sidney Crosby picked up an assist to push his NHL-leading point total to 100, but the Penguins appeared to lose interest after failing to bury the Hurricanes during a frenetic opening barrage in which they appeared ready to run Carolina out of the arena. "We all felt like the first 10 minutes we were carrying the play ... for whatever reason we got away from that," Crosby said. "Maybe we thought that came easy or we could get away with cheating. And it didnt work." No, it didnt. Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves, but received little help playing behind a sloppy defence. The Penguins turned it over 13 times, including a series of miscues the Hurricanes were only too happy to turn into goals. "I think we started mismanaging the puck and started having turnovers in the neutral zone," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said. The Penguins appeared to right the enigmatic final third of their season with a spirited 4-1 victory over Chicago on Sunday night. Two days later, the sense of urgency evaporated when the Hurricanes -- who are about to miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year -- failed to roll over. Pittsburgh recorded 12 of the first 14 shots, including Kunitzs wrist shot from the left circle that Khudobin never saw. Crosby picked up the secondary assist to lift his point total to the century mark for the fifth time in his career, drawing a roar from the usual sellout crowd at Consol Energy Center. It had all the makings of a blowout. One developed, just not the one the Penguins were expecting. Carolina steadied itself late in the first, evening the game on a knuckling slap shot by Faulk that gave the Hurricanes the confidence boost they needed to get back in it. "That goal from (Faulk) really evens it up and then we kind of just took a deep breath, got our legs going better and then I thought we just started moving better and playing a much smarter game," Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. The Montreal-born defenceman left the ice for a concussion test, but returned in time to bury a winning goal that left the Habs -- and their fans -- fuming. Letang dug the puck away from Prices glove and slid it in the net, drawing jeers from the crowd, who thought the referee should have blown the whistle. "It just came loose on my stick -- I pulled it and I shot it," said Letang, his nose still sporting a large blood drop after the game. Letang said he passed the tests under the leagues head-shot protocol. He also had something else to be do before heading back onto the ice. "Obviously, my nose (was) broken, so the doc put it in place and I was ready to go," said Letang, whose team forced overtime on forward Jordan Staals tying goal at 15:30 of the third period. "(The doctor) put a pin in it -- and pop. Its not perfect yet because I want to be a model after my career." Pacioretty didnt get a penalty on the play, but the NHL could take a closer look at the collision. Letang said he couldnt comment on whether it was a dirty hit because he didnt see it coming. Saturday marked Crosbys first road game since coming back last week after missing more than 10 months of NHL action with concussion-like symptoms. In the third period, Kunitz also put the puck -- and Price -- into the net on a breakaway, but the referee maintained it was not a goal because he collided with the goalie. But it was the overtime goal that had Montreal head coach Jacques Martin steaming at the end of the game. He thought Price had the puck. "Im really disappointed for my players," he said. "I thought we competed really hard and its really disappointing it ended that way." On the Pacioretty hit on Letang, Martin was pleased the refs did not give him a penalty. "It was a good hit," he said. Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma was happy to escape Montreal with the win and with a healthy Letang -- his top-scoring defenceman.
