WINNIPEG -- Blake Wheeler was feeling good about scoring his game-winner against the leagues hottest goalie. Wheelers goal during a breakaway in the third period against Sabres goalie Ryan Miller proved to be the winner as the Winnipeg Jets beat Buffalo 3-1 on Monday. "The scouting report has kind of been that Millers unbeatable, but if youre going to beat him, youve got to try to go over the shoulder," Wheeler said. "You always feel fortunate scoring on a goalie like him. Hes probably the best in the league right now. Youve got to take a little bit of luck out of that, but it felt good it went our way tonight." The win gives Winnipeg a little breathing room in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The eighth-place Jets now have 72 points, three more than ninth-place Washington, who have two games in hand. Andrew Ladd and Chris Thorburn also scored for the Jets, while Bryan Little tallied three assists and Ondrej Pavelec made 23 saves. Corey Tropp had the only goal for Buffalo, which had been unbeaten in eight games heading into the contest. Miller faced 31 shots in the loss and is 6-1-1 in his past eight games. It was the last of an eight-game homestand for the Jets, who went 5-1-2 during that span. Winnipeg retains eighth spot in the Eastern Conference with a 32-27-8 record. Buffalo is four points back at 30-28-8. Ladd opened the games scoring when he banged in a rebound at the front of the net at 13:45 of the first period. The Sabres swarmed the Jets zone during two power plays close to each other in the second period, but couldnt convert. But with just 35 seconds left in the middle frame, right-winger Tropp scored his second goal of the season during a goal-mouth scramble to tie things up. Wheeler made it 2-1 after he took a pass from Little near centre ice, skated in alone on Miller and fired a high shot over his out-stretched glove at 8:02 of the third. Little knew he was under a bit of pressure to get the puck to Wheeler as he was busting free. "I know if I dont get it to him Im going to hear about it for a while," Little said. "He did a great job of finding that hole. I had to make the pass pretty quick `cause it was going to close up. He made no mistake. It was a great goal." It was Littles first three-point game since Dec. 26, 2008. Wheeler has five goals and 15 points in his last eight games. Miller said he didnt see how the play developed. "Im just watching the guys to see if theres any chance of danger," he said. "Obviously, I saw (Wheeler) coming for a while there. Its just one of those ones where I thought I had him set up pretty good and I felt it just right at the edge of my glove. "Just not probably enough on him taking away some space and he made a nice play." Sabres coach Lindy Ruff wasnt impressed with Wheelers goal. "We made a big mistake in the third and it was a pretty tight game," Ruff said. "To give Wheeler a breakaway at that time of the game was bad judgment on our part by our defence. We had one guy joining and slipped in behind our other defenceman." Thorburn gave his team some breathing room at 10:54 when he skated around defenceman Robyn Regehr and slid a low shot under Miller off his own rebound. Notes: Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian didnt play because of a lower-body injury... The Jets are 22-10-3 when scoring the first goal of the game. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Lleyton Hewitt beat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships on Thursday. The No. 3 seed leads the career series with Baghdatis 3-2, winning their first match since 2010 when Baghdatis had to withdraw with an injured shoulder. Hewitt won his 29th career title in Brisbane this year. He needed 91 minutes to finally beat Baghdatis for the first time outside of Australia and continue his strong start this year. "Marcos, hes always a tough competitor, and this type of court suits his style as well," Hewitt said. "He hits the ball hard and flat out there, and if hes making a lot of first serves its not easy. I just sort of bided my time out there and took my chances. Had to fight hard early in the second set to hold serve and got a bit of momentum after that." Hewitt will play American Michael Russell on Friday. Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat second-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-6 (2), 6-4, serving up 19 aces and losing only six points off his serve. He will play American Jack Sock. Earlier, American qualifier Alex Kuznetsov upset eighth-seeded Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) to reach his first ATP quarterfinal. He will play fourth-seeded Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan, who beat American qualifier Denis Kudla 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Hewitt could join Roger Federer (932) and Rafael Nadal (669) as the third active player with 600 match victories if he wins the title in Memphis.dddddddddddd. Baghdatis had the benefit of an opening match here in Memphis, while Hewitt had a bye. Baghdatis also opened the match serving well with four aces, and he broke Hewitt in back-to-back games to go up 5-1 and serve out for the first set. Then Hewitt settled down and faced only one more break point in the final two sets. That came in the first game of the second set, and the former No. 1 took advantage of Baghdatis double-faulting four times and struggling with his serve. Baghdatis said he was very aggressive early. "After having a break point in the first game of the second set, I stopped playing, stopped playing aggressive and he started getting to points and rallies," Baghdatis said. "He was dictating the rallies and basically thats it. Thats all. Couldnt get back to where I started from." Hewitt said he needed a bit of time to adjust in his first match at The Racquet Club. He also started mixing up his serve as well. "He was taking a swipe at all of my serves early on so I just had to find a way to hang in there more than anything," Hewitt said. "Just the pace of the court, the ball, just try and find that rhythm out there." Kuznetsov, who turned pro in 2004 and just turned 27, finally won the seventh match of his career in his 38th match.
